Carlsbad Caverns National Park Visitor Center

Visitor center
Hiking area
The Carlsbad Caverns National Park Visitor Center serves as the main entry point into the cave area and offers a wealth of information on cavern history, wildlife, and local flora and fauna. Visitors can explore exhibits on how the caves were formed, view a 3D model of the cave, and learn about the unique ecosystem. Additionally, there is a gift shop, cafeteria, and bookstore available for visitors to enjoy.
Awesome park! Geology at its wildest! Crazy rock formation, reflections in underground lakes, and crazy critters! The hike down is no piece of cake, 750' of elevation decline in a steep 1.25 miles...may not seem that bad, but it takes a toll. Luckily plenty of places to sit on the way down. I'd you're not in good shape or have joint/back issues, you can take the elevator straight down to the Big Room which is another 1.25 miles. We hiked down but used the elevator to get back up, it was exhausting. Also it can get a bit chilly down there so take a light jacket. Great park, I've never had a bad experience!

One of the most amazing places to experience the wonders of nature. I enjoyed sharing the experience with my daughter-in-law and granddaughter. After exploring the caves, we ended the evening watching the bats as they departed the cave for the night. The sounds of nature and star lit sky is worth the trip to Carlsbad Caverns. The Rangers are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
Lisa M — Google review
Even though I use a cane for long walks, the self guided "Great Room" trek was AMAZING! There are sturdy, stainless steel handrails the entire way, so I probably would have been okay even without the cane. The areas where wheelchairs are prohibited are clearly marked. There are quite a few pull through parking spots for RVs, although it's a bit of a longer walk to the information center. This was also about the cleanest national park I have ever visited. There is an area next to the information desk that has a lot of exhibits and a movie theater that runs a very good 17 min video. I wish I would have done that first, as I found it answered many questions on my "self guided" tour.
Penny S — Google review
I had been here 30 years ago, but this was my husband's first time. He is a disabled Vet that uses a Rollator walker. We rode the elevator down and up. There is only part of the cave accessible with a wheelchair or walker. What we were able to see this time was amazing. He took quite few pics and kept exclaiming......Wow, Oh My, Look at THAT!! I recommend to take your time and look around, rent the audio tour devices from the Bookstore. A lot of people on the paths were almost speed walking thru. They missed a lot. I have a pretty good imagination and "I saw" formations that looked like gnomes, like a rock man (almost like Fantastic Four character), the back of a woman with a fringed jacket and skirt climbing in a hole high up a wall. Again take your time....we entered at 9:30 and didn't come out til 2ish. We ate in the cafe part of the gift shop. Browsed the gift shop and bookstore (bookstore is a run by the Park and all profits go back into park) and made purchases in both.
Kelly Q — Google review
The visitor center is very well organized and helpful. There are two rangers at the information desk who guide you through everything you need to know before entering the caverns. The ticket counter is easy to find and the entry fee is fifteen dollars per person for the self-guided tour. The exhibits inside are interesting, especially the large cave model and displays about the formations. There is also a good selection of souvenirs. A great place to start your visit and get all the details before heading into the caverns
Ratnam R — Google review
My second time here. You must watch the evening Bat Flight! It’s a MUST! The cavern is amazing. If you’ve never been, but perhaps you’ve been in some big cathedrals, I want you to imagine the biggest cathedral you’ve ever been in, and multiply by 20 to 30 times that size. That’s the great room in Carlsbad! But even that doesn’t really begin to describe it. Is something you simply have to see in person. It’s jaw dropping!
Richard Z — Google review
Such a nice place, the Rangers were very nice and the gift store was plentiful. The cave it self is just beyond description. They have made it very safe and 75% is accessable by wheel chair. The Bat fight was fun and interesting.
Robert M — Google review
Put this in your bucket list! Amazing park and caverns. The biggest cavern room in North America. If you’re fit and like to walk take the natural entrance and then you can use the elevator to get out. Gift shop is a must see! Buy a reservation online to speed up check in

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
The Carlsbad Caverns Underground Lunch Room is a unique cafeteria-style eatery located below ground in a naturally formed cavern, making it a popular destination for tourists. The lunchroom underwent renovations in the 1950s to accommodate the increasing number of visitors, taking advantage of efficient food production and distribution systems. While some visitors found the food overpriced and not exceptional, many appreciated the experience of dining at the bottom of the cavern after exploring its wonders.
The absolute coolest lunch experience ever! I am a National Park Service supporter to the highest extent and eating at this underground lunchroom was just incredible. We went on 3/27/25 and 3/28/25 and both days we bought a couple of the best peanut butter jelly sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies (not an exaggeration) before continuing to explore the caverns and it was just such a unique experience. Support the NPS!!!! Worth every penny!
Ashlynn — Google review
Cool spot to relax and eat either after you've come down the natural entrance or right before you leave. Sadly food selection is really lacking. They have ham or turkey sandwiches or salads for main meals. For snacks candy bars, some baked goods, small bags of chips, bottled soda and a few other small things. (At this time of posting 2023 sandwich costed $8.75, chips $1, brownie $4, soda $2.87, candy bar $2.19)
Cory G — Google review
The caverns were amazing! Once in a lifetime experience. Food wasn't great and over priced and the bottom of the cavern, but we were famished and shared a sandwich. There are places to pull over on the road up to the caverns, we packed a cooler and pulled off for lunch with a view. Such an incredible experience! Highly recommend walking in!
Antoinette W — Google review
Great place to visit, very large cavern. Highly recommend.
William M — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. The area we stopped had bathrooms(not in the best condition). Kids got to run around and dogs are allowed!
Addyson M — Google review
The restaurant closes at 2 and they don’t sirve food at all, the cavern tickets stop selling at 2:30 and Google maps says at 5 so we made a long trip for nothing. Also, the bar fly. Bars not coming out, park ranger suggest to stay all night because u may see them go in and out during the nigh. No sell pol home allowed like if there was something u could take pictures of. Not worth it to make the trip so disappointed 😔
El Ñ — Google review
2 stars on the inconsideration alone. One thing that you hear about Carlsbad Caverns is that there is a lunchroom at the bottom leading you to believe that you can make the hour and a half trek and get something to eat before spending an hour touring the big room. If you take medicine, have blood sugar issues, or some other reason you can't wait to eat, you better eat before hand. It would be nice if they or the National Parks Service would let you know ahead of time.
George C — Google review
Back in 1996 the lunch room at the bottom of the cavern had some really good food. But they have since shut it down. The fried chicken and other food being cooked at the bottom attracted wildlife into the cave so now they only serve refrigerated sandwiches, fruit cups and a few other items. I understand why but its just not the same anymore. We skiped the lunch down below and opted for a picnic at the tables near the parking lot. It has the best views.

Sitting Bull Falls

Mentioned on
1 list
Waterfall
Nature & Parks
Sitting Bull Falls is a serene location that boasts a series of waterfalls and natural pools, making it popular for hikes, swims and picnics. This cascading waterfall stands an impressive 150 feet tall, flowing into stunning crystal-clear waters. A well-worth 0.7-mile hike leads visitors to the top of the falls where they can witness at least five pools before reaching the final bottom pool.
Only the drive there makes it worth it,not to mention how beautiful it is and peaceful, we went of the 1st week of April so it was pretty empty, entry to the park was only 10 dollars,it was windy that day but we enjoyed every minute of it. Park Ranger was nice and helpful!

An oasis in the middle of nowhere! Gorgeous area, bathrooms. Picnic area
Marcia S — Google review
This place is beautiful. Only an hour and 15 minutes from Carlsbad and it feels like a different world. Beautiful drive and scenery. I swam at the base of the waterfall and although brisk, very refreshing, worth it, and rewarding. Highly recommend a visit! Bring your bathing suit, towel, and a change of clothes. The rocks are slippery so enter in the middle section. It closes at 4pm daily. The walk to the falls is only about 10 min max from the parking area. Bring $10 with you in cash for the entrance fee. There is no gate or attendant, you put your money in an envelope and drop it in a box.
Kristina L — Google review
Absolutely stunning view of a waterfall surrounded by foliage into an ice cold spring. You can swim. It’s about 6.5 feet in the absolute deepest part, and less than a foot in the shallowest. There’s large rocks and small pebbles on the bottom of the spring bed. The water is so cold it’s shocking to get into, but it feels so nice to dry off in the sun when you’re done swimming. Truly a stunning oasis in the midst of the desert. Absolutely worth the long and windy drive to the spot. It closes at 4 pm, so be sure to get there before 4. As long as you’re there before 4 you can stay later.
Raimi B — Google review
With myself and my family being part native American Indian it was very important to show them this beautiful and very peaceful peace of our heritage.
Jeremy J — Google review
Easy .25 mile from the parking lot. For the less traveled pools of water that are deep enough to dive into, take T68 trail up from the parking lot for .4 miles up above the falls. This was my kids favorite part.
Ronald C — Google review
Truly an amazing place. The peace and serenity of the place can be felt making the hike around the area. It clear to see why ancient people groups would have chose this as an oasis get away. Super dog friendly and since it a smaller park there is normally plenty of room for the pawers to run and play.

Guadalupe Peak

Mountains
Guadalupe Peak is an iconic destination within a national park, offering hiking trails and backpacking opportunities. The peak is known for its stunning views and unique geological features, including a fossil reef. Hikers can expect a challenging but rewarding 8.4-mile round trip to the summit, with varying weather conditions and temperature changes along the way. Visitors recommend bringing plenty of water and snacks for the journey, as well as taking time to rest and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
I will be one of the few posts that didn't make it to the peak. I have Neuropthy in my legs, so I knew they would get weak before making it 3,000 feet of elevation. However, I enjoyed my hike, making it a little over 2 miles up before running into packed ice/snow. So, since I didn't have poles to help with balance, I decided to turn back. It was a challenging but beautiful hike. I had lunch in the shade of trees and soaked in the views. It took me a little over 4 hours to go 2 miles and return. Polls would definitely be recommended for hiking down, as it wears your knees out. I definitely wish I had come a few years earlier to experience the peak. I'm glad to have the opportunity today to hike as far as I did.
Alan B — Google review
The hike up is pretty much uphill the entire way up. The last mile is absolutely the hardest, not the first two. Hiked this peak in the snow and ice and highly recommend micro-spikes and trekking poles. Come prepared with water and the proper clothing. It took us a little less than 6 hours total to hike up and back with around 20 minutes at the top and frequent picture stops.
G M — Google review
This hike was a very difficult yet very rewarding hike! This will definitely be one of the biggest physical accomplishments in my recent memory. I highly recommend this hike!!!
Tommy B — Google review
Great hike and views. I'm over 60 and round tripped the hike in under 6 hours including time at the summit. Completed on a warm, sunny February day without much wind.
Brian W — Google review
Awesome! Really cool trail. Czech republic guys did it 2:15 up to the hill. 1:50 back down to the car. Yeah - we are used to walk 😉 But - a lot of water! And respect the weatherforecast. When we finished a huge thunderstorm came.
Martin V — Google review
Pretty well kept I would say, great views and some challenging spots for a little test. Two spots that are like blocked off can go unnoticed and it takes you off the trail and can get you in a tough spot but if you use your phone to check and make sure you are on the trail, you should be fine. Some loose rocks can get tricky coming down so take your time and enjoy the views.
Willie R — Google review
Very awesome hike for the moderate and advanced hiker. Met a lot of cool people from far and near. Went there when there was the arctic freeze so trauma bonded with a few people on how cold it was. Overall had a blast! Would recommend this place to any hiker.
Dr. D — Google review
The Guadalupe Peak Trail is an unforgettable experience, especially in winter. We hiked it when the trees and bushes were covered in ice and snow, turning the trail into a magical wonderland. It took us 7.5 hours round trip, including 30 minutes at the peak to take in the breathtaking views and pure awe of standing on the highest point in Texas. The icy conditions did make parts of the trail slippery on the way down, so be prepared with good footwear and take it slow. Despite the challenges, it was worth every single step. The beauty of the trail and the sense of accomplishment at the summit made this an adventure we’ll never forget. Highly recommend for those up for the challenge!

Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site

Mentioned on
2 lists
State park
Sights & Landmarks
Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site is a captivating destination located in the mountainous region of El Paso County. Spanning 860 acres, this park is renowned for its stunning natural hollows filled with water, which inspired its name—derived from the Spanish word "hueco," meaning hollow. Visitors can explore ancient rock art that reflects the rich Native American history of the area while enjoying guided and self-led tours.
It's a neat place for climbing, hiking, and sight seeing. There is a lot to discover in this place and the people working there are nice. It's even better when you have a guide like Julian, who is clearly very knowledgeable of the park and will guide you to some of the best places that Hueco Tanks has to offer. I can't emphasize how brilliant Julian was as a guide. He's full of cool facts about the place and knows how to get people all over the place safely. Anyone visiting this place needs to understand that they need to be at least a little bit fit physically because some places are challenging to get to, but they are worth it.
Warren L — Google review
This is a unique park that has a limit to the number of people who can enter daily. It’s known for its petroglyphs and Hueco tanks, which translate to hollows that hold water, some of which can be seen easily and others that are only accessible by Ranger guided tours. We stopped by on the way to New Mexico and there was no one available for tours at the time. It’s really hot during the summer and therefore not very crowded. You’ll need to plan ahead in cooler weather. They don’t take online reservations - you have to call in.
Jan P — Google review
Hueco Tanks has been on my elderly father-in-law's bucket list since reading about the tanks in his Western novels. We had permits for Sunday, but it was supposed to rain, so we decided to try Saturday morning. The two young ladies at the check in were absolutely precious and made sure he got his wish. The gentleman in the video area was very patient and explained the trails carefully so we would know what we should attempt and what we shouldn't. He also arranged for Carlos to show us around. Carlos was extremely knowledgeable and incredibly patient. The area is beautiful and definitely fulfilled a wish for my father-in -law. The people who work there are just as beautiful and special as is the state park.
Michelle S — Google review
Great way to spend a day! Wear good hiking shoes and enjoy some beautiful scenery! My only complaint is that our peaceful adventure was constantly interrupted by gun fire from a nearby shooting range.
C H — Google review
Great park. Limited for 3 night only. Only 20 spots.but don't go if you are not planning to visit the historical site.which need permit. And book a tour.if to, there no reason to come her.
Avi B — Google review
This was one of the best state park experiences we’ve ever had! We did the Pictograph guided hike #1 and it was fabulous. Park Ranger Nicole did an outstanding job and her knowledge of the flora and fauna, park and pictograph history made it a meaningful experience. Highly recommend! This park has limited access so reserve early.
Cynthia F — Google review
Went on a guided tour with a friend! The ranger was great! She didn’t pressure anyone to do any activity that they were not comfortable doing. We even saw a group of javelinas in the park before our tour started. Be sure to stop at the headquarters office to pay when entering the park, and stop in to let them know when you leave the park. I don’t recommend hiking here when it is too hot outside.
Demetria W — Google review
I recently visited for some day hiking, and tried exploration of a true oasis in the rough deserts of West Texas... this was nothing less than spectacular. This was my first trip to Hueco Tanks, this is part of the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo ancestral lands, and as a descendant of the Ysleta/Tigua I truly appreciate the care taken of this land, and the respect shown to the archeological significance of this site. A wonderful place to visit, I look forward to returning and taking a guided tour. Thank you to the caretakers of this land.

The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a 35-acre park that houses over 220 African, American, and Asian species in natural habitat replicas. Families can enjoy exploring exhibits such as Animals of Africa, Animals of Asia, and Animals of the Americas. The zoo offers Zoo Adventure Programs for both children and adults, along with daily animal encounters featuring sea lions, eagles, monkeys, and more. Additionally, visitors can enjoy family-friendly attractions like a treehouse playground and a water play area.
The Zoo is always a fun place to visit and enjoy the company of wonderful animals, cool down in the splash pad, take a ride on the carousel 🎠 ride, run around the playground and indulge in a tasty treat. Love making memories with my family! 🦒 🦓 🐅 🐦

It's a zoo, surprise, honestly it's a decent zoo I've been to better also to worse. You can never predict if the animals are going to be active or not. I was sad to hear about the loss of a giraffe I was told there were still 3 there but we never saw them. When we went to the zoo had a few sections down for maintenance and repair but it didn't dampen the experience much. I liked how people in the park were passing along info to fellow guests about closures and better spots to see an animal very friendly. Bonus info You can purchase a ticket to get a face-to-face with a few of the animals for $40.00. We opted for the penguins encounter and it was great! They gave us instructions on how and where we could pet the penguins amazing experience I would highly recommend it if you want to do something a little more memorable. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Jerry W — Google review
I really want to support our local zoo, but every time I visit, I leave disappointed. Too many of the animal enclosures are consistently closed, which takes away from the overall experience — especially when you’ve paid full admission. I find myself trying to justify bringing the family, only to remember why it ends up feeling like a waste of time and money. A zoo should be more than just a walk through pathways. If most of the animal exhibits are inaccessible or hidden, it makes more sense to just visit a local park. For the price, guests deserve to see what the zoo promotes — not empty habitats. At this point, I’d rather make the 2-hour trip to the Albuquerque Zoo, where the experience is consistently more complete and worth the drive. El Paso Zoo has potential, but it really needs to step up — either improve accessibility to exhibits or adjust pricing to reflect what’s actually available.

The wife and I took our now six year old autistic son and his friend with us here last month to do a little something to do with different wildlife for his birthday week . We were really impressed with our trip and how the boys enjoyed their time here. The people are absolutely awesome and the atmosphere was great.

Visited the zoo for Halloween with my daughter, bought the tickets previously online. I was scared it would be too packed but found parking quick and got in the zoo in no time, every year the zoo gets better, ive been attending boo at the zoo for several years now and it never disappoints my daughter loves it every time. Thank you!

The setup is great the only thing was that the lion seals windows for out of water viewing were incredibly dirty, but all else the Zoo is a nice setup.

I liked this experience because the concert was one hour, and the pieces were short, a few minutes long. Often when I go to the symphony, it's a two or three hour event with the music pieces lasting a long time. It was good for my hyperactive self. Parking was easy at the zoo. It was casual experience, but elegant. This is my first time at such a event. #candlelight

White Sands National Park

Sights & Landmarks
White Sands National Park in New Mexico is a breathtaking destination featuring rare gypsum sand dunes, making it the largest such field in the world. The park offers a unique experience for visitors of all ages, with opportunities for activities like sliding down the dunes and hiking along various trails. It's recommended to visit during sunrise or sunset for an even more magical experience. However, visitors should be aware that the park may occasionally close due to nearby air force base activities.
One of the best sunsets I’ve seen. The sun makes the clouds colorful and the color changes millions times in an hour. Unlike other huge national parks, it does not need a week to explore everything, you can either enjoy the thrill of sand dune sliding or watch the sunset quietly.
Pu S — Google review
Visitors center was very educational and nice to visit. The gift shops had a huge variety of souvenirs and personable employees who knew a lot about the park. There’s plenty of space at each stop for the volume of visitors and bathrooms available throughout the park. It was a great experience I would highly recommend.
Melanie D — Google review
It’s worth stopping here for two or three hours if you happen to be in the neighborhood, but it’s a mystery to me why this place was upgraded from national monument to national park, because it definitely does not deserve that distinction. There are a couple of interesting short walks, though the main boardwalk path has been closed for six months because an Air Force plane crashed near there.
Lisa W — Google review
We were able to visit the Park today, even though there is a government shutdown. I was surprised at the visitor center, kinda run down and the restrooms were really poor. But the stark beauty of the park was stunning! They only had it open to the Dune Trail, couldn’t go past that point. We walked part of the trail. It is beautiful!

White Sands National Park is a super cool & different place to see. It is an easy 45 minute drive from Las Cruces. We visited on a Monday midmorning. It was not busy. They do have limited trailer/bus parking. There is a park store with National Park souvenirs and a small exhibit as well as a gift shop where you can rent sleds. The Dunes Drive I believe is approximately 8 miles to the loop at the end. Along the drive there are a few parking areas that have picnic tables and restrooms. Many of the areas toward the end of the loop allow you to walk and sled on the sand. There are a couple trails to hike as well as remote camping when allowed. Make sure to bring water before entering the park as they don’t have services in the park. We spent about an hour exploring the park(we did not hike the trails). White Sands is massive but the park felt smaller than expected. If you’re in the area or can make a quick detour it’s worth seeing in person!

The sand cools as the sun sets and it's not so windy like at many beaches, so there's quite a sense of serenity especially if you venture out to some of the more isolated dunes. Definitely the most ethereal national park I've been to The National Park center also lets you rent sleds to ride down the dunes and wax to apply to their bottoms, and although it's not quite as slick as snow sledding, there are some steep dunes that are about 30 ft high for you to gather enough speed to get a decent run. There's also hardly any internet connection once you're there, so make sure you have the physical map or have downloaded it in Google maps
Emc2 — Google review
This is a must visit national park! The views were absolutely beautiful and the sand was ice cold! I would definitely recommend bringing sun screen and renting the sand sleds at the park with the wax. We brought our own plastic snow sleds and waxed them but they didn’t work as well as the ones they offered for rent. Since the government shut down is still going on the park admission was free. I will note that there is construction going on in the park right now so it did take about 15 mins to get to the back of the park to see the dunes. Overall it was an amazing experience with life changing views.

So happy we came in November. Cant believe people come here in the summer lol. We walked the cold fresh sand barefoot and it was lovely. Mike the park ranger was super nice and informative.

Sights & Landmarks
Scenic Drive Park East Rest Stop is a must-visit spot in El Paso, Texas. It offers a breathtaking view of the city and Juarez, Mexico across the Rio Grande. The drive itself is an experience with its winding roads that provide dramatic views of the surroundings. The small park and scenic overlook at the rest stop are perfect for capturing panoramic views of El Paso and Juarez. Despite limited parking space, it's definitely worth a short drive to reach this historical and picturesque location.
Haven't been to a sonic in many years. I wonder where all the ordering stalls went? Great place for mobile orders. Really quick with my slush Thanks y'all!

Great views if you look out across the city. Disgusting view if you look down the hill at all the trash and empty beer bottles thrown from this pull off. Sad that the people who live here don’t care enough to take care of this place.

Senic View Overlook in El Paso, TX Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Senic View Overlook in El Paso, TX, is a stunning spot that offers breathtaking views of both the city of El Paso and Juarez, Mexico. The overlook is steeped in history, having been built back in 1920, and remains a popular destination for both locals and visitors. Top 3 Lesser-Known Facts: 1. Historical Significance: Sonic View Overlook was originally constructed as part of a larger project to create scenic routes and public spaces in El Paso. It was intended to be a place where people could enjoy the natural beauty of the area while also appreciating the engineering feats of the time. 2. Architectural Style: The overlook features early 20th-century design elements, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. Its construction used locally sourced materials, making it a unique example of regional architecture from that era. 3. Cultural Landmark: During the 1920s and 1930s, Sonic View Overlook was a popular spot for community gatherings and events. It has witnessed countless sunsets and has been a silent observer of the growth and changes in the cities it overlooks. Interesting Story: One intriguing story about Sonic View Overlook involves a local legend from the 1930s. It is said that a young couple, deeply in love, would meet at the overlook every week to watch the sunset together. Despite the hardships of the Great Depression, their love blossomed, and they eventually got married right at the spot where they had shared so many sunsets. Their story became well-known in the community, symbolising hope and enduring love during difficult times. One of the Plaques also mentioned that in the 1920 there was a belief that Explosions or dynamite would cause rain. During a drought the city of El Paso requested for this testing to be tested here but no luck in bringing needed rain. Appeal for Preservation: While Sonic View Overlook is undeniably beautiful, it is disheartening to see that not everyone respects this historic site. Littering is a significant problem, with trash often being thrown over the edge despite the availability of trash cans. It is crucial for visitors to take responsibility for preserving this area by properly disposing of their waste and respecting the environment. Keeping Sonic View Overlook clean will ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty and historical significance. In summary, Sonic View Overlook is a remarkable place with stunning views and rich history. It deserves to be treated with care and respect to maintain its charm and significance for years to come.

This is on an active military base. You will need to check in at the guard house so they can check your ID and run a background check, then you can walk to the museum. There is tons of cool stuff set up to view outdoors. You can see the bleachers they use for viewing the testing sites. Lots of cool stuff of aircraft & history enthusiasts!

We visited after closing and so missed the inside of the White Sands Missile Range Museum. However, the outside is open to the public after hours. We spent about an hour walking the path and looking at the missiles, rockets, and equipment on display. The museum has a great collection on view. My husband will definitely come back during operating hours to visit the museum building. A fair number of the signs were so degraded by the weather that we couldn't read them (April 2025). The museum staff responded to another reviewer that replacement signs had been ordered. Once the new signs are installed, the quality and value of the exhibit will be greatly improved.

An amazing history lesson. Great museum to visit. I first visit the museum in 2005. The museum in 2005 no longer exists. Originally, the 2005 museum displayed a lot of unique and interesting rocketry items. All of those items are now in storage and not open for display. The outside Rockets are very unique and fun to visit. Also, they have another display that’s just as cool, but it is a single room with a rocket.

Active missile base. You will need your id and they will issue you a pass to be able to go to the museum. Most of it is outside but there's history of the area in the building. It is free

The White Sands Missile Museum was a fascinating and educational stop for our family! It’s free, easy to explore, and packed with history. The outdoor missile park is super impressive—our kids loved walking among the rockets and asking a million questions. Inside, the exhibits are well-done and tell the story of space exploration, military testing, and the science behind it all in a way that’s accessible for all ages. It’s a great blend of history, science, and wow-factor. Definitely worth a stop if you’re anywhere near White Sands!

Visitors can explore interactive exhibits showcasing farming and ranching practices, including demonstrations of dairy farming and cooking techniques. The museum also features a variety of animals used in local farming, allowing guests to visit them in their corrals.
This is not so little gem of a museum in Las Cruces. We've been to Las Cruces sooo many times and wished we had visited this place sooner. It's extremely child friendly and has immersive exhibits. My son loved the kids area, the farming equipment and the animals. The staff is sooo sweet and very informative.

Sights & Landmarks
Mesilla Plaza is a historic district and national landmark in New Mexico, offering a delightful blend of history, culture, and entertainment. The plaza features fabulous restaurants serving traditional Mexican dishes and live music performances by local artists. Nearby, the Fountain Theater, the oldest movie house in the state, showcases an array of films for visitors to enjoy. Additionally, visitors can explore the area's rich history at the old County Courthouse and browse through various specialty shops for souvenirs.
If visiting the El Paso are the quaint town of Mesilla is worth stopping at. Absolutely adorable. Hard to spend a whole day there however. A good morning or afternoon (e.g., 2-3 hrs, probably 4 max). Visit the artisan shops, enjoy a relaxing meal, and there was a artisan market on the Plaza when we were there. We stayed in El Paso and spent time there on our way to the White Sands Natilnal Park. The two were a great way to spend a day.

This area is worth stopping at if you are in the area. It's a place of American history. There is lots to see and lots to do. There are many small shops and restaurants to eat at. Billy the Kid was arrested in the area and held at the jail here. Los Postas and Andres are a must to eat at. If you don't eat at Los Postas at least go inside and check it out.

Where are the amenities in this area? This entire mesilla area has no shaded parking for travelers with dogs, no public restrooms (while many of the businesses dont have restrooms either), the handicapped parking (full) is located on the only curb without a ramp, and the only drinking fountain in the entire embarrassment is turned off. This is the middle of the desert, 100+ degrees, and Mesilla can't provide any tap water for the tourists to drink? The staff at the big church are also incredible ungodly. As a full-time traveler since 2014, i can confidently say, its not worth going out of your way to visit this area.

The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum is a must-visit gem in Deming, New Mexico. Located just three blocks south of the main drag, this museum housed in the old Armory building offers an impressive collection of old pottery, sparkling rocks, pioneer artifacts, toys, dolls, quilts, and dental equipment. Visitors are often surprised by the diverse range of exhibits covering various subjects. The impeccably kept facility and friendly staff make it a delightful stop on any road trip.

The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum is a true treasure for anyone who appreciates the history and culture of the American Southwest 🏜️. Located in the heart of Deming, this museum offers a deep dive into the region’s past — from the ancient cultures of Native peoples, including the Mimbres, to life on the frontier during colonial times and up through the 1970s 🏛️. A special highlight is the exhibit dedicated to Fort Cody — a key stronghold and protection for settlers during the harsh times of taming these lands ⚔️. Inside, you’ll find unique artifacts ranging from tools and clothing to photographs that tell stories of everyday life from those years 📸. Each exhibit seems to come alive, sharing tales of the resilience and endurance of the people who built their lives on the frontier, overcoming hardships and creating a lasting legacy 🛖. The collection covers a wide array of topics: archaeology, ethnography, early settlement history, and daily life, making the museum a truly vibrant and educational place for anyone wanting to grasp the spirit and character of this corner of America 🇺🇸. The attention to detail in preserving and presenting history is impressive, allowing visitors to literally touch the past ✨. For history lovers wanting to feel the atmosphere of the true Old West, this museum is a real gem 🌵. I highly recommend it to anyone interested not only in major historical events but also in the everyday lives of those who left their mark on this land 🕰️.

A ol timing museum with much to see! As an old armory, it has so much space for all kinds of exhibits! Even a second floor. It's a really great wall though not only Deming's history but American history. I only wish there was more info boards on the history of the Mimbres and their pottery. As a Pueblo Native, I was enjoying seeing these types of exhibits. There's a gift shop and other historical places to see nearby. This is definitely a must stop visit if you're in Deming!

I preface this with my wife is Indigenous. After going through the entire exhibit of the "founders" of the city we came to a room and my wife said, "Ah, look at that. Entire museum dedicated to the rich white people and only a small room dedicated to the original settlers. It was a nice museum. But I agreed with my wife.
Chad B — Google review
This is a big history museum in a small town with a history richer than many large cities. The exhibits are stunningly detailed in their attention to small things. Almost as if presented as a counterpoint to the little things, there are large full-sized vehicles in two or three areas that give us a sense of having been transported back into time. As a history lover, I was blown away. If museums reflect the community where they are based, Deming must be one amazing place.

City of Rocks State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Serene, vista-filled state park featuring unusual volcanic rock formations plus camping & hiking.
I had no idea this place existed. Huge rocks in all shapes and sizes. It reminded me of Stonehenge and where the Flintstones might live. Rocks teetering on top of each other, rocks that looked like different things, rocks with holes in them, rocks split. I think it would be awesome to camp by the rocks and couldn’t figure out why most campers were huddled together close to the ranger station. At first I thought they were afraid the rocks might shift and roll on their campers. Then I realized they had electric, running water and sewage where they were. Those things aren’t available at the rock campsites. Yeah, that’s where I would be, too. I don’t recall the fee for camping but it wasn’t much. Day pass for vehicles was $10 non residence, $5 for New Mexicans. Enter fee is on a “trust but verify” basis. You put your money in the honor box but first you must fill out a paper, keeping a copy for your windshield, the rest goes in the box. There’s a little more to it than that but that’s the long and short of it. Rangers may stop you for a spot check of your integrity. We drove around the park taking pictures then we reversed course and went around again. This place was super cool, especially if you like rocks as much as we do. I would highly suggest spending some time here if you’re in the area or passing through. A real hidden gem.

We had so much fun at City of Rocks. My kids loved climbing on and exploring in the rocks. It is a natural playground and maze all in one. We could have spent all day just exploring in the rocks but we also enjoyed the hieroglyph scavenger hunt and visiting the visitor center where the staff were very friendly. One of the most unique places we have ever camped.
Michael T — Google review
Amazing place to visit. There are non-electric campsites among the rocks or electric campsites in a row outside of the rocks. The electric sites are typical campground with not much space between. The non-electric are spread out and most are quite private. This is is a hide and go seek paradise. Its fun exploring all the formations, nooks and crannies. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We stayed one night but could have easily stayed two. Check in at 4pm with checkout at 2pm gives plenty of time to explore the rocks. There is a separate set of rocks up on a lookout hill that you can hike to or drive to. There is a picnic table at the top with a parking lot. There are also several trails in the area for those staying longer than overnight. Sunset was amazing. Those camped along the Westside got an amazing view. We camped in site six which was interior to some rocks. A small trailer will fit but take care in backing in. Note that the bathrooms are not close to most sites. The visitors center has showers which were extremely busy in the morning even though the night we stayed there were not that many campers. Probably about 1/4 full on non-electric sites. The electric sites were completely full. Apparently they like the public bathroom better than their own.
Greg H — Google review
This was our first experience camping at City of Rocks. We had sites 20-25. 21-24 are rather close to each other. 20 is elevated and fairly separated from the other sites, but you have to hike a good 500 feet in from the parking spot. The rocks and bouldering are the main draw here, as well as the dark skies for stargazing. Other than the wind, November is a great time to visit. Be aware that the gate is locked at 9 PM each night. Drinking water was available during our visit, and the visitor's center has ice, and many other items you may have forgotten. Deming and Silver City are the closest towns nearby, about 30 minutes away for each.

The photos posted can’t express the “Ahhh experience” to this natural wonder. It is worth stopping off the beaten path and exploring. The RV and campsites were nice, offering electric and non electric sites. If you are not a fan of camping or are just traveling through it’s worth the hour or two stop and enjoying this natural beauty. The park also has a site rental for educational activities such as star gazing and other outdoor events. This information can all be found online or at the guest center/gift shop.

Chiricahua National Monument, named after the Chiricahua Apaches, is a breathtaking 12,000-acre park in Arizona. The landscape features unique rock formations formed from eroded volcanic ash. It's a popular spot for hikers, campers, and birdwatchers with diverse wildlife including coatis, javelinas, mountain lions and black bears. The park offers two campgrounds and is located about 37 miles from Willcox.
Great experience regarding the walk for the monuments! We took The Big Loop even though we were not quite prepared physically. Reading a lot on the internet about and being determined to squeeze the max out of it, we started the trail at 8 o'clock in the morning. We finished at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Many thanks to the administration for keeping such great shape trails. Clean pathways thanks also to the educated tourists! We would gladly return!

Amazing park i never knew existed! Very beautiful and peaceful. There is an amazing almost 10mile hike with campgrounds that definitely warrent a camp trip. Also, shorter trails up on top where the views are most excellent! We plan to come back for sure, but we were just driving through. Even if you only have an hour or so to spare, there is a very scenic drive you can take to the top that's well worth the visit. Also, the NP agent inside was super nice and informative. Great park!

Went here on a beautiful December weekday 2024. The gravel road to get there was not that bad. Did it easily with a small SUV. Pretty sure not 4x4 or anything. Hike from parking lot to the visitor center and fort ruins was 45 mins tops, and not like I am a super hiker, and that also included some stops for pics and sightseeing. Not the best of the 410 national parks I have been to, but still really great. Quite peaceful and relaxing. Only saw a handful of people during my whole visit. Visitor center small but had some good displays. Enjoyed the views from the rocking chair on the visitor center porch. Water and restrooms and a small gift shop at the VC. Was going to take the back/scenic route back but totally forgot. Overall, a rewarding 2-hour visit.

Fort Bowie is where the wars with the Apache started when a 2nd Lieutenant accused Chief Cochise if kidnapping a young boy. Full of history and ruins with a Ranger to share the history. Has a small museum inside the visitor center. Worth the trip if you like history. You can hike the 1.5 mile trail in or drive close to the visitor center.

It’s always good to learn some history about what happened in your own country. I’ve never visited so many forts and monuments in my life until I bought the national Park pass book and started collecting stamps. Many places I had already gone in the past but now we are revisiting some of the old and welcoming the new. Visitor center was not open, but you could still do your own walking tour.. I WOULD RECOMMEND

Great place for a short hike. This is the location of the battle of Apache Pass, between the Apaches and the California Column. Old and New Fort Bowie are located here, just across from the Ranger Station.

Its better than you think it would be. The surrounding scenery is spectacular and there is so much historical information. The best way to experience Bowie is to hike from the trail head. There is a road leading up to a parking area near the visitors center but the hike allows you to enjoy everything in the area and the scenery. At this time the visitor center is only open Sunday and Monday. You can go anytime and see the everything but the visitor center has a must see museum inside and souvenirs if you want.
Adrian P — Google review
Visited during government shutdown. Although the visitor center was closed, the trails and bathrooms were open. Visited on a Monday afternoon and I was the only person there. Hiked around the old fort buildings and along the three mile trail out to the cemetery and along overlook ridge. Good views and signage along the way to provide historical insight. Would strongly recommend hiking the trail. I had cell service at the VC but lost signal on the trail. Great place to visit to get a sense of history in the late 1800s.

Simply amazing place, stunning scenery, history of the Butterfield mail coach in the 1850s and the relevance of the site in terms of the thirst quenching Apache Spring.

Explore the fascinating history of mining at the Queen Mine Tour in Bisbee, Arizona. Dating back to the late 1870s, this century-old underground complex offers hard-hat tours that take visitors on a journey through time. Led by knowledgeable tour guides, including retired Phelps Dodge employees, visitors descend 1,500 feet into the mine to learn about mining techniques, dangers, and dramatic stories from the past.
Tickets were sold out, very glad we purchased them ahead of time. The kids absolutely loved it. We’ll definitely go again. The gift shop was really nice and there was also the cool rocks that we got.

This mine tour was so much fun! They give you a hard hat, vest, and a light. The train ride is really cool too! Our guide definitely knew what he was talking about and answered our groups questions. The cave we toured through is wide open. As someone with claustrophobia, I felt safe and comfortable. I would definitely recommend!

What a unique experience! The Queen Mine Tour was the highlight of our trip to Bisbee. Our guide, Neil shared real-life stories from his time working in the mine, and you could feel his passion for the history and the company (Phelps Dodge Corporation). The tour was well organized, informative, and fun. A must-do if you’re visiting Bisbee!
Niranda W — Google review
The queen Mine Tour was really enjoyable! It was pretty accessible to most parties, and the employees were very accommodating if anyone had any difficulties with the space of the mines. The tour itself was very informative if you're interested in the mining process and the history of the town. The visitor center has lots of gift/ souvenir options. It is within walking distance of the town. I drove an electric vehicle and was able to charge it at one of the Chargepoints in town while I enjoyed sightseeing and this tour.

Absolute must do in Bisbee!!! When you arrive you’ll get outfitted with a hard hat, light, and safety vest. Then you’ll board the cart deal that takes you into the mine. You straddle the seat like a motorcycle. Joey, our tour guide was fantastic. He was funny, knowledgeable, and made the tour fun and semi interactive, while making sure everyone felt safe. We had a smaller group so it was like a private tour. We went 1500 feet underground and learned the entire history of the mine. We even got to see the illusive light show (not typically offered). Awesome experience for all ages.

Loved the tour and the gift shop! All staff that we encountered were friendly. The tour was so informative! The mine is in great shape. Will live to take others through in the future.

We had an amazing time on the mine tour. Our tour guide was excellent—funny, friendly, and very knowledgeable. It’s an experience where you not only learn about the history of the mines but also feel truly connected to the past. We enjoyed every moment and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes so you can enjoy the tour even more. A wonderful experience!

The Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum is a must-visit attraction offering underground mine tours, history exhibits, and a crystal cave. Located in the former headquarters of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company, this museum provides an interactive journey into the role of western copper mining towns in America's industrialization. Visitors can explore impressive minerals, artifacts, photographs, and tools from Bisbee's mining era.
Wonderful place. Don't miss it! Main floor has history of the town with great displays and info. Upstairs is all about the mining in town. Very interesting and you could get a sense of how life was for miners. This town was THE SPOT in the 1800s. One of the best museums I've been to!

This is such a fascinating place. If you are visiting Bisbee for the first time I highly recommend this museum. As I post this it's only $10 and well worth it. It's a Smithsonian affiliate if that tells you anything about how great it is. They have a room that is still original and a gift shop that is tax free!

Excellent mining and history of Bisbee museum. If you are in town exploring, make sure to stop by and see the history of this place. Pretty crazy the amount of copper that came from their and how it formed the town of Bisbee. The exhibits are very nice and interesting. You can really get a feel of what it was back in the day, minus the hard work and suffering a lot of these early settlers of this area faced. There's even a whole section that I believe the smithsonian helped with (could be wrong) that includes a ton of different minerals / rocks from the area that are absolutely beautiful. Cool town, awesome museum!

The Bisbee Queen Mine Tour was amazing. My partner and I visited during our weekend getaway trip. I'd never been in a mine before and it was something to experience. Parking wasn't difficult as they had their own lot. I would imagine during high visitor times you wouldn't be able to find a space.b Before we went into the doors, we saw many things to do outside and learned a lot of history about the mine. Entering the doors it's a museum and store to purchase items from. We did buy our tickets inside and was lucky enough they had a few seats left. We got hard hats and vests lights and boarded the mine train. It was an experience the entire family would enjoy. To see the entire experience visit my YouTube Channel called Eat and Travel with Toni.

The Bird Cage Theatre, a renowned landmark in Tombstone, is steeped in history and legend. Dating back to 1881, it was a bustling hub of activity, operating around the clock with various amenities such as a cantina, bar, theater, and massage parlor. Notorious for its association with gambling and brothels, the venue attracted both famous and infamous figures of the time.
A very unique museum with an easy self-guided tour experience. I'm glad this place is here and I'm happy that I went though it. Is it worth $16.50 per person? I'd give it a "soft yes." The museum's artifacts are not perfectly curated and it was a bit dusty, but it's a good place to spend 30 minutes while in Tombstone if you're interested in the history.
David M — Google review
This theatre offers a truly unique and thrilling ghost-hunting experience, and I absolutely loved it! The biggest highlight by far was the woman who led the tour she was incredible. Her energy, storytelling, and deep knowledge of the local history made the entire experience feel authentic and captivating. She brought just the right mix of spookiness, humor, and historical insight, keeping everyone engaged the whole time. The atmosphere of the theatre added to the eerie charm, and the ghost-hunting equipment made it feel interactive and fun. Even if you're a skeptic, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement. Overall, it was a memorable and entertaining night, and I’d highly recommend it especially thanks to the amazing guide who truly made the experience come alive.

The Birdcage Theatre – Tombstone, Arizona If Tombstone is the heart of the Wild West, then the Birdcage Theatre is its cathedral. Think of it as the Lambeau Field of football or the Carnegie Hall of music—the place where history, legend, and atmosphere all come together. Many museums claim “nothing has been touched” over the years, but few deliver. The Birdcage does—and in spades. Walking inside feels like stepping directly into the 1880s. Hundreds of authentic items remain in place from nearly 150 years ago. The rooms, the furniture, even the air carries the weight of the stories that shaped the American West. It’s not just a museum—it’s living history. On a personal note, I experienced something here I’ve never felt elsewhere. While exploring the basement on a daytime self-guided tour, I had a haunting encounter I can’t easily explain. I’m not someone who buys into things quickly, but this one gave me chills. If you’re interested in the paranormal, this place more than delivers. Overall, this is the experience of Tombstone. Worth every bit of the entrance fee, even in the 2020s. Take your time, let the history sink in, and if you only see one thing in Tombstone, make it the Birdcage. I’ll be returning—again and again.
Bryan R — Google review
My husband and I are avid travelers and obsessed with paranormal investigations. This did not disappoint! I know I sound crazy to some but for those that have experienced it themselves completely understand me- I walked to one side (away from the group) and immediately felt like a 50 lb weight was on my stomach. I walked towards my husband and told him what just happened, immediately took a picture of the area where I felt the unusual feeling. I captured a ghost on camera! I captured several orbs, one entire human figure and one mist over the Black Moriah. Well worth every penny and every minute spent- it was the highlight of my trip!
Katie S — Google review
This is the original building of The Bird Cage Theatre. It was built in 1881 and is now a museum, but retains a lot of the original theater details. We found the exhibits fascinating and really enjoyed the museum. There is also a nice gift shop loaded with Tombstone souvenirs.

Historic, Haunting, and Totally Worth the Visit. During our trip to Tombstone, we stopped by the Bird Cage Theatre—and it did not disappoint! Hearing the history of the building, seeing the original bar still marked with bullet holes, and viewing the old paintings and artifacts really brought the Wild West to life. The stories behind the place are fascinating, and it’s incredible how much has been preserved. If you’re in Tombstone, this is definitely a must-see spot for a deeper, more vivid look at its past.
Mint M — Google review
I spent a solid three hours here taking in every detail—and if they weren’t closing for the day, I would’ve stayed longer. If you’re in Tombstone and skip the Bird Cage Theatre, you’re missing out. Period. Ignore the cheapskates whining about the $18 admission—it’s worth every cent if you have even a remote appreciation for history. This place is a time capsule, and absolutely essential if you want to understand the real Tombstone.

The show was worth the price of entry ($10 pp over 5). Very comical but the history lesson behind it was very interesting as well. My children 10, 8, & 5 all stayed entertained the whole 30 min. Gun shots are loud in the "arena"

We had such a great time at the show. It was funny, the acting was amazing, and it kept us entertained from beginning to end. Boothill Graveyard, located in Tombstone, Arizona, is a must-visit attraction for those interested in the town's history. Situated on the outskirts of town and home to around 276 graves, it serves as the final resting place for individuals involved in shootouts, lynchings, and hangings. Notable figures such as Billy Clanton and the McLaurys from the infamous OK Corral fight are buried here.
Very cool to experience and history in person! This place offers a in-depth descriptions of the these people lived hundreds of years ago. Many of them tell of how they died. Most ended in tragedy with either being hung, shot, stabbed, and even poisoned! Take your time reading and learning of these individuals who made history. February 2025, $6 for adults. 12 and under free. Gift shop offers many unique items with fair prices. Staff were very friendly and helpful in answering any questions.

We found our visit to Boothill Graveyard to be very interesting. Fortunately the graves were covered with rocks to prevent animals from digging. This also made locating them easy. Many of the tombstones have been restored and a few have pretty humorous messages.

Boothill Graveyard – Tombstone, AZ Just outside of Tombstone, Boothill Graveyard brings you face-to-face with the real people who shaped the Wild West. Standing only feet from their resting places makes the history feel tangible, yet it’s less macabre than you might expect—especially if you’ve studied the history or enjoyed the classic Western films. I recommend saving this stop for the end of your Tombstone visit. It provides a sense of closure, showing not only how the legends lived but also how their stories ended. As a bonus, the grounds are dotted with beautiful examples of Sonoran Desert cacti, making it a rewarding visit for history lovers and plant enthusiasts alike.

This was my husband's and my favorite stop in Tombstone. We were greeted by a friendly man who was running the gift shop. He kindly showed us a map of the town and alerted us to areas not to be missed. The woman selling the tickets into the cemetary was very informative. She spoke animatedly about those who are laid to rest there. We enjoyed our walk through the graveyard. I was particularly moved by the Jewish memorial. This graveyard illuminates the lives of people who were brave or crazy enough to settle the west.

A Fascinating Step Back in Time We visited Tombstone and had such a great time learning about the history of the town. After hearing the stories and seeing the sights, we were inspired to visit the Boothill Graveyard to see where many of the town’s famous figures are buried. It really brings the Old West to life. It was a unique and memorable visit—definitely worth it if you’re into history or just want to experience something different and authentic. Tombstone has a charm all its own!

$6 to enter and dogs are allowed. They give you a pamphlet to tour the graves that tells you what happened to most and there were so many violent deaths. Very peaceful resting place. There is a gift shop with clean restrooms.
Tony J — Google review
The cemetery itself is 100% a place to stop and see. The pamphlet with information on those laid to rest here is very interesting and really shows how brutal life in the 1880s could be. However before coming, probably call and check their hours are correct. We were all but locked into the graveyard at what we thought was an hour early of closing (it was 5pm). When we rushed back to the building upon realizing it the lady closing the store was a bit harsh. The store was shut down lights off doors locked. She said they were at their winter hours. Which were not posted anywhere, and no one said anything to us when we got our tickets to enter. The lady’s response was to “go online to wherever it’s wrong tell them” so I guess here I am posting to beware of hours and let you know they will lock you in. Posting a photo with the hours for today, still showing they are open til 6, they are not! Worth the stop but super bummed we didn’t get our souvenir as we collect one everywhere we go.
Zoe L — Google review
As a longtime fan of Western films and history, visiting Boothill Graveyard was such a unique and interesting experience. At the time of this review, Bowlin's Travel Center's hours of operation are from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The staff is very friendly. It's conveniently located right off Interstate 10. The restrooms are clean and tidy. The large driveway and parking lot is a little rough, something you should know if you're riding a motorcycle. There's plenty of parking for both cars and trucks. There are eight gasoline pumps for cars. At the time of this review, only regular unleaded fuel ( 87) was available. The price of gas seems slightly higher than other locations in the area. The location is a combination of things. It's a museum, souvenir shop, and mini mart. If you're looking for Southwest, dinosaur related, alien related, and/or knick knack souvenirs, this is your place. There's a Dairy Queen joining the location. The hours of the restaurant may be different than the travel center.

Plus if you're into oddities, the exhibit of "The Thing" is probably right up your alley. Encompassing almost 300 acres, this sanctuary is particularly beloved by bird enthusiasts and is renowned nationwide as a prime habitat for hummingbirds. The diverse array of wildlife thriving in this seemingly harsh environment captivates visitors from the moment they set foot on its trails.

Stunning preserve! Birders paradise. Get here early to spot incredible birds and wildlife. Parking is also limited. The staff is very knowledgeable and will tell you the latest sightings and maybe where they were spotted. I recommend this for everyone who truly wants to enjoy and connect with nature. If you have someone with a disability or walking issues they can enjoy the area beyond the entrance or walk a little ways. Once inside the preserve there are benches surrounding hummingbird feeders and one can sit for hours! There is a good bit of shade and benches. I would consider allowing 90 minutes minimum for the lower loop. Closed Tuesdays.

This was our first visit, and we will definitely be back! Absolutely beautiful, and the scent of pine everywhere was wonderful. We had several wildlife encounters (see photos). We made it to the first viewing area of the Overlook. We would have loved to make it all the way to the top, but I was feeling it. Lots of steps on a fairly steep trail, thankfully there's lots of shade on the way. Will have to get to the top another time, when I'm in better shape. There are lots of benches along the way, and the map the volunteers gave us was helpful in seeing how much further we had to go! The map details about the numbered stops were very informative. There is so much to see here! Bring lots of water and wear your sunscreen, even with the intermittent shade. We're considering the annual membership pass since we will certainly be back. Thanks to the volunteers for helpful tips before starting our hike. *We had a Coues deer calmly graze very close to us, then cross the trail right in front of us. Unfortunately I tried uploading an .mov clip of this, and also after converting to Mp4. No go.

Site 44 (ours) was very unlevel/ 6” leveling ramps still was not enough! Website should apply this info on each space; take the time to do so! We left early because of this and no refunds! Website gives no idea if level or need super high lifters; awful! I have vertigo so it was not fun. Unless you personally go to rv park and chk each one, you may get one like ours that is more than 6” off! Be prepared. Campsite is clean, shower water is hot but hubby says in mens bathroom toilet paper rolls are in a “ weird place so legs are catiwompass while sitting”…. Odd they would do that. $50 a night tho makes it hard to wanna go back. Nice views of mountains and they have a loop for hiking so that is nice. The unleveled lots make this hard to come back to not knowing if you choose online a decent spot… in pics they all look level. Beware! No one expects more than 6 inches!!!!! Also do not drink the water or use for cooking. Had brown , gray water with sediment come out. Use bottled water for cooking or drinking or coffee!

One of, if not the best State Park in the system. The cave tours are excellent. The campground is top notch with well spaced sights. The surrounding area is rich in historical sites, and the Sonoita opportunities for food (The Copper Brothelbrew pub), wine, and distilleries is a great adult day trip. And, the incredible Empire Ranch is also near Sonoita. Wildlife opportunities are abundant both summer and winter. We really enjoy White Water Draw in the winter to see 10's of thousands of Sandhill Cranes. So, its just not the cave and campgrounds - there is a vast area to explore.

Great experience on our cave tour today! Our guide Rich was knowledgeable and funny! It was great to learn about the history and geology of the cave system. We’re planning a trip back when we can visit the Great Room (closed this time of year for the bats). Also enjoyed a short walk on one of the trails. Beautiful area!

This is a nice park, plenty of hiking trails, not far from tombstone and Sierra vista. Cave is cool but not much else to do except hang out . Spots are big and lots of privacy so you can let it all hang out if you like, after dark gets interesting careful where you look you might get an eye full, just because Rv windows are tinted real dark doesn’t mean you can’t see through them at night especially if your inside lights are on. So bring your cards or Yahtzee or board games. Leave your inhibitions at home. No judgement here.

Great tour, good location. Cafe not so good. The tour was excellent and very informative. No photos allowed unfortunately. Some outside shots.

One of the best state parks to enjoy a few days camping, have stayed in #16, #1 and last weekend #4. Always a five star experience and with hosts like Paul and Melinda all was perfect, but here is my very unfortunate con. Having enjoyed the cave tours, either one is great, this time our 230pm tour included a very unruly child that was much to young and much to spoiled. Could barely hear the information given by Brody our guide and constantly ran back and forth on the stops we were supposed to be enjoying. I do believe this child has never heard the word no. No negative reflections towards staff at all and we will continue to return to this campground and complete more tours

The caverns are stunning and a must see! Amazing creation by God! I'm from OR and have been through the Oregon caves many times and the explored the lava beds in CA, so I'm used to the caves being very cold, so I came all bundled up and with my heavy coat and the ranger told us when we bought our tickets that it would be hot and humid inside! I was shocked 😳. After we were done with the cavern tour, we went on one of the trail loop hikes. It made it a great day!

Colossal Cave Mountain Park

Colossal Cave Mountain Park is a captivating destination that offers visitors an unforgettable experience with its stunning cave tours and beautiful butterfly garden. Nestled along the Arizona Trail, this park invites adventurers to explore its rich history, dating back to 900 A.D. when the Hohokam people thrived in the area. Families can enjoy guided tours led by engaging guides who bring the cave's fascinating stories to life, making it especially enjoyable for children.
My boyfriend and I visited Colossal Cave on our one year anniversary. It was a beautiful rainy day, and we were both filled with excitement. We entered the cave with a group and with Arik as our guide (who smelled amazing btw). The tour was amazing and Arik was informative yet funny and engaging. As we went deeper into the cave Arik showed us an area called the “Alter” in which he revealed his true form. Out of nowhere, Arik rose up and bats began swarming him. Arik was in fact the Bat Overlord and we were all here to be sacrificed. Panic ensued, one member of our group was so terrified he ran directly through solid rock, creating a key hole formation. Everyone else in the group scattered like cockroaches while Arik flew at us, engulfing those he captured in his giant wings. As my boyfriend and I ran from Arik and towards the exit, Arik flew face first into the “bone breaker” rock formation, knocking him out and disintegrating him back to his human form. My boyfriend and I along with the remaining group members surrounded him scared, confused and a bit concerned. When he finally came to, he congratulated us on our survival, and informed us this was a test to ensure we could conquer the ladder tour on our next visit. He then showed the group where those who fail go to perish, a 50 ft hole with nothing at the bottom but a dropped IPhone and a silverback gorilla. I would highly recommend the tour, this was an unforgettable experience.

The tour guide was great. Corny jokes but he warned you ahead of time. They're invested in educating people of the damage that we can do to nature in caves as well as the rich history of the cave. The cave itself is impressive although you only get to see ~ half mile, the caves network is a known 37 miles. Awesome place to visit if you're in the area as the surrounding park is also great.

I booked the ladder tour at CCMP, and had an extraordinary experience! Our guide, Arik, was not only knowledgeable about the cave system, its histories, and its navigation, but was charming and hilarious as well. It takes a special set of skills to combine an educational activity with jokes and banter, and our time with our group in the cave system absolutely flew by. The tour itself was not overly physically demanding but still felt as if you accomplished something unique by the end. If you were debating between the ladder tour and the standard tour, I would wholeheartedly tell you to book the ladder tour. You get to do some minor climbing, you spend some time in true darkness, and you get a lot more value for the extra time spent in the caves. The entire staff were professional but passionate- you can tell everyone who works there care about the land they’re showing to the public. At no point did I feel unsafe or worried about their standards, and from start to finish felt like they truly wanted our entire group to have a wonderful time. After the tour I had a soft serve prickly pear ice cream at their cafe which was adjacent to their impressive gift shop and it might be the best ice cream I’ve ever had in my life. 10/10. If you’re visiting the Tucson area I cannot recommend this park and tour enough.

What a great experience! The staff at Colossal Cave Mountain Park were all incredibly friendly and helpful. I especially want to thank our tour guide, David. He did an amazing job sharing the history of the cave in a way that was both fun and educational. His passion and humor really made the tour memorable. We'll definitely be back!

Hands down, BEST experience at Colossal Cave Mountain Park today on the Ladder Tour. Our tour guide was Arik and he did an amazing job! He was super informative and told us so many fun facts about the cave and surrounding area. While the tour can be tight in some spots, I would HIGHLY recommend it! You get to explore parts of the cave not on the standard tour as well as experience complete darkness. It’s a great experience!
Jessica F — Google review
Adam was our tour guide and our family had a great time! We only wish we had visited sooner! Easy 50 minute tour with lots of neat tidbits, and the cave is cool (literally). We didn’t do anything else as we live right next door, but I’d recommend it to anyone stopping by.

Ladder tour is worth it! We did ladder tour with Arik, he was brilliant and the tour was brilliant, some tight squeezes but I’m a big guy and fitted through without getting stuck. I would definitely recommend the ladder tour over the normal tour any day was so different and fun.

Rincon Mountain Visitor Center is a fantastic place to start your exploration of the impressive national park near Tucson, Arizona. The center offers excellent displays covering various topics such as flora, fauna, and human activity in the area. It also provides essential amenities like restrooms and a water filling station. Visitors can explore the well-maintained desert landscape and may encounter wildlife like roadrunners, quails, and rock squirrels while hiking on the trails.
What an amazing park! We took some hikes off the LV trailhead - highly recommend it. Pink Hill was very easy and had some great cacti viewing. Over 2 million cacti populate the entire Saguaro National Park!

Very friendly staff. Mike was very helpful in explaining the available activities, scenic lookouts, and trails to us. The visitor center has a small gift shop and a nature display. The restrooms outside the building are nice and clean. The loop drive took us through landscapes and scenery we had never seen before.

Large 8 mile circle a one way most of it. Not near as busy as the West saguaro national Park in the Tucson mountains. The road is paved on the 8 Mile loop with more hiking options along the way. Lots of places to pull out. RVs not recommended there are not large parking spots. You have to obtain a national Park day pass or greater to enter. There is a guard shack with a ranger in it. Enjoy!

Park with a 265-acre, manmade lake as its main attraction also features camping & fishing.
Great place for a perfectly getaway! I'm not necessarily a birder and I don't fish, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy my stay here. It is definitely geared more for those hobbies. I was in the area to do some cycling out of Patagonia and this was a great base camp. I definitely recommend the East side for a quieter setting. Spots are nice and spread out with electric and water hookups. Showers were clean with hot water.

Our first time. It was awesome. We had the place to ourselves. Showers were out of order. Clean restrooms. Port a potty’s available. We found a plug to get some power. Multiple grills and picnic benches available. We swam around and also brought an inflatable boat with oats. There were lid jackets available for use there for free, they were hanging on a rack.
Kimiko W — Google review
This is a great park, lots of trees, large Rv spots, lots of privacy. Water is great, they have a sandy beach. Lots to view, even saw a naked person roaming their Rv, just cause the windows are tinted doesn’t mean you can’t see through them, especially when your lights are on, I’ve enclosed pictures, blurred of course. Cool bridge to walk over at night as well. Price has gone up way too much for what you get here and nothing else near by. 50 a night is a bit pricey.
Michelle — Google review
For the money spent on camping the camp grounds should be level and weed free. The picnic area lake view is non existent do to overgrown bushes tree's and weeds other than that it's a nice place to hang out with friends.
Michael S — Google review
We camped at Patagonia for a week. There’s 2 different sides to the campground. Each has its advantages. Most spots on the side we stayed on had a water access trail. There were lots of bare trees around. The power to the campground went out 2 days in a row. A note notifying us in advance would have been nice. But that was not the case. The state park is pretty far from any stores so bring everything you may need. There’s a Walmart 17 miles away in Nogales
Nelida S — Google review
Looks great, like a well worth destination for some downtime. We'll be back!
Carmen K — Google review
Great park, spaces are large, lake is nice, close to Nogales , and Sonoita . Lots of shade trees. They now have floating toilets around the lake. There is also a cool bridge that crosses over the marina area which is lit up at night. Boats and floaty toys welcome, water is usually perfect for swimming. Sites are big and have plenty of privacy if you want to cut loose a little, plenty of trail and bird watching. There is a small store that has just about everything you might have forgotten. Fun place no judgement, let loose and have fun. Sad they had to raise the price to 50 it was a good deal at 35, not so much at 50.

The Pima Air & Space Museum is a sprawling 80-acre complex that houses over 400 historical aircraft, making it one of the largest non-government-funded aerospace museums globally. Visitors can explore indoor and outdoor exhibits showcasing a wide range of aircraft, including the iconic Wright Flyer from 1903, the legendary Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, and even a modern marvel like the 787 Dreamliner.
Brought my son from Florida here for his first visit. He was totally impressed. I hadn't been in a couple of years and there were many improvements. So many aircraft. Maybe the third best air museum after Wright Patterson and Smithsonian. Outside exhibits as well as indoor. The restrooms have been remodeled and are air conditioned as is the Cafe. So there is much to see inside on a hot day.
Roger C — Google review
First rate air museum, been to a few this is by far the best I have been too. Going back again for a thorough visit. They really have too many planes to see. Mainly from WWII and forward. Went on tour ride worth the extra price well explained.
Laurence G — Google review
This had been on my bucket list for a while, but when they acquired the Philippine Mars, it made it that much more a "need to go"! It is an all day, or two day visit if you are a real plane buff. We were fortunate that the day we visited, (1st day) the 390th Memorial Museum on site, had a special guest. Colonel Richard B. Bushing Ret. It was amazing the get to talk to someone that was such a part of shaping the world in our lifetime. He is 102 and very much still a firecracker. It is amazing to see the variety and volume of aircraft on display. Go early and wear good walking shoes.
Greg W — Google review
This place is amazing. Make sure you give yourself enough time to see everything. Lots of it is outside too, so plan on going in the morning maybe to see the outside stuff. We gave ourselves 3 hours and it was not even close to enough time. Really amazing. We were really impressed and in some cases in awe of what we were seeing. I would recommend this place for anyone even remotely interested in planes or historic aircraft.
Angry G — Google review
Interesting aviation museum covering mostly military aircraft spread over a large area. Summer opening hours are 0900-1500h, but by 1430h the outdoor exhibits are not open to visit. It's not easy to cover every exhibit in one day, and there's a lot of walking to do. A cap and plenty of water are recommended, as it can be brutally hot and there are few places to sit. One hangar contains a beautifully restored B-17G that is well worth the visit, as are several hangars containing well-restored aircraft, mainly from WW2. There is some equipment and other artifacts also on display that make for interesting reading. It's easy to get app-based cabs to and from the museum, and there is a covered waiting area at the entrance.
Arjun S — Google review
On a road trip from El Paso up to Page, AZ my son and I wanted to check this place out as we have never been. HOLY COW, what a place!!!! I had no idea that we would spend over 4 hours there, the amount of aircraft and exhibits is truly amazing. AND on top of it, we were lucky enough that a retired Colonel Richard Bushong that flew missions during WW2 through Vietnam was speaking with visitors, telling stories and signing his book. The people too that work at the museum were so informative, just adding to the overall experience.
Brian M — Google review
It has really grown since the last time I was there. Huge variety of aircraft and most buildings are climate controlled. Most of the museum is out doors so bring your sun screen. The new B17 standalone museum with in a museum is open. Tons of staffing with good air conditioning. They will ask you for donations on top of the normal entrance fee but it is optional.
D G — Google review
Beautiful displays with informative placards. Well layed out, spacious and clean. A classroom of aviation history with more information than you can take in in a day, but worth any amount of time that you have available. Outdoor static displays are numerous so wear your walking shoes or take the tram. As an aviation buff I can't recommend this more! Well done Pima Air & Space, you knocked it out of the park!

Nestled just south of Tucson in Sahuarita, the Titan Missile Museum stands as a remarkable testament to Cold War history. This unique site is the last remaining missile silo of its kind, offering visitors an immersive experience into a pivotal era. Guests can embark on guided tours that take them underground to explore the Titan II Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Site 571-7, where they can witness firsthand what life was like during those tense years.
Amazing! Went here on a Thursday in December 2024. Wow, just wow! Felt like a combo of Minuteman Missle NHS, Star Trek First Contact, and X-Files. Great tour. Great insight from the tour guide. Limitless access to pretty much everything in the complex. And the cherry on top was touring outside above ground. I would have paid triple and still thought it was a great value. Super easy to get to with plenty of parking, gift shop, and restrooms. You will not regret your visit.

Very cool place to visit! At the Titan Missile Museum you go underground into a real Cold War missile silo and see the massive missile up close. The scale of everything is incredible and really makes you feel the history. The guides are excellent — they explain everything in a very interesting and easy-to-follow way. Definitely worth it if you’re in Tucson!

This place is awesome!!!! My son and I really liked it and we BOTH want to recommend it. The tour was very informational and going down into the complex was very cool. The price was very reasonable, able to take pictures (obviously) and if you go......when asked for volunteers in the control room, do it.

This museum is absolutely worth a visit! Our guide, Steve, brought the experience to life with a great mix of humor and deep knowledge. After the tour, I even had the chance to connect my ham radio to the original 80-foot-tall, 60-year-old Collins Discage antenna — and made contacts all the way to Hawaii and my uncle in Tennessee. A truly unforgettable experience!

I attended the guided tour, I recommend the tour over topside viewing. It’s a fun adventure into the military tech of the 1960s. Just thinking about being stationed here waiting for a fight that never happened in a secret location had me imagining the lives of these young men. What an interesting time the Cold War was. Having grownup in the 80/ and 90s we had more of a sense of purpose in those days. Great tour and guides.

San Xavier del Bac Mission

Sights & Landmarks
San Xavier del Bac is a Spanish Colonial Catholic mission built in 1783 that is now a National Historic Landmark. This beautiful church features baroque architecture and painted artwork and it is still used for religious purposes, making it a great place to visit if you are interested in history or religion.
Just an exquisite safe haven for the heart and mind. The long rich history of the Mission is full of breathtaking artistry, attention to detail, and skilled craftsmanship. We visited on a Sunday, and the sanctuary was full, and the Sunday Mass was about to begin, so we didn't get to see the entire sanctuary (note: I am not Catholic, and don't know if there is a different word for that area of a church. I apologize!) There is also a shrine up in the hill to the right. I was up there some 30 years ago. A very peaceful, secluded place to pray or think. One of my favorite places on this planet. 🥰🥰🥰
Deborah W — Google review
I visited San Xavier del Bac Mission today, just south of Tucson, and it hit me all over again why they call it the White Dove of the Desert. The mission rises out of the land with this quiet power, even now with scaffolding wrapped around the front while they work on the old façade. You can see where time, weather, and a few bad repair choices from the past have worn it down, and now there’s a careful crew out there trying to bring it back the right way. Even with the construction, or maybe because of it, the place feels alive and in motion instead of frozen in a postcard. Inside, the air is cool and still. Candles, color, carved figures, and old paintings all carry that mix of Catholic history and Tohono O’odham spirit. It feels like a living church, not just a museum, and you can sense how many prayers have soaked into those walls. Outside, the desert light hits the towers and scaffolding together, and it feels like you’re watching an elder being cared for. If you are anywhere near Tucson, it is worth stepping into that space, even while the work is going on. Maybe especially now, while you can see the effort it takes to keep something this old, this sacred, standing strong. Grateful Traveler’s Note 🌿

San Xavier del Bac Mission truly lives up to its nickname, “The White Dove of the Desert.” This magnificent and spiritual Spanish Catholic mission, completed in 1797, is a stunning example of Baroque architecture and features breathtaking painted artwork throughout. The atmosphere inside the church is deeply moving. It was incredibly touching to see all the candles purchased for the sick, the dead, and for miracles. The fact that a candle, which costs just $8, will burn for an entire week is a beautiful gesture. The mission grounds are equally charming. We loved strolling through the courtyard with its beautiful fountain and browsing the quaint gift shop for unique Arizona trinkets. The food vendors outside were a great addition, offering delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine. This is a must-see for anyone in the Tucson area, whether you appreciate history, architecture, or are simply looking for a peaceful and spiritual place to visit.

Amazing and beautiful! The architecture was amazing, the museum and the church still continues to serve the Tohono O’odham community! Definitely check it out when in Tucson. Also, if they do have mass, please do not enter. And bring water as well!

San Xavier del Bac Mission, built in 1797, is a stunning example of Mexican Baroque architecture. The intricate carvings, vibrant frescoes, and preserved religious relics make it a deeply spiritual and historical site. Inside, the ornate altars and centuries-old artifacts reflect the rich Catholic heritage of the region. It's both a place of worship and a must-see tourist destination near Tucson. The peaceful desert setting adds to its beauty, and guided tours offer valuable insights into its cultural and architectural significance. A true gem of Arizona history and a remarkable experience.

TLDR: I am not Catholic, but have visited various cathedrals, churches and missions and this is one of the most interesting I’ve ever been to. “Founded by Padre Kino in 1692 and completed in 1797, San Xavier del Bac Mission is Arizona’s oldest European structure and a masterpiece of Spanish Colonial architecture.” - stolen from the website 😎. I’m always blown away by the artistry and commitment to detail ensconced in the decoration of religious places of worship, and the beauty of the San Xavier del Bac Mission is no exception. You really have to visit to take it all in. The staff is welcoming, and there is a gift shop where I picked up a handmade (I think) souvenir ornament and some DELICIOUS prickly pear gummy bears. Seriously, they were really good and I haven’t seen them anywhere since that visit.
