Mesa Verde Visitor & Research Center

Mentioned on

Visitor center
The Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center, located near the park entrance, is a must-visit for anyone planning to explore Mesa Verde. Here, visitors can purchase tickets for guided cliff dwelling tours and take some time to explore the exhibits on display. The center offers insights into Pueblo history, art, and the sustainable features of the building itself. It's an ideal starting point for learning about the park's culture and natural history through various collections.
Mesa Verde is an awesome National Park. We saw several Native American cliff dwellings. We took a ranger tour of the Cliff Palace. It was outstanding but a fairly streneous hike up and down ladders, uneven ground and some big stairs. The Museum was good as well. We saw a deer when we were driving in the Park. We had a great time!
Taryn B — Google review
We didn’t go specifically to this center but rather took the route around the area and pretty much stopped at every turnout. We are older so hiking is out of the realm but the vistas at these stops are wonderful and well worth it. We do not feel as though we missed out on anything knowing that the main area of settlement was inaccessible for us. There is so much to see and the roads are terrific. Bravo to our Park Service.
Kathy C — Google review
Highly recommend a quick stop at the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center before heading into the park. It's a great opportunity to talk with the rangers and get valuable information before you start the 20-mile drive up to the main sites. A key thing to remember is that this visitor center is located outside the national park entrance. Once inside the park, you can also find a museum and a café where you can talk to a ranger and get more information.

Unique National Park! A must visit if you are close enough. We visited on a Tuesday morning and it wasn’t crowded. Drove the northern loop and stopped and explored the overlooks and scenic areas. I would like to come back and do some serious hiking. Highly recommended!!
Brian B — Google review
I was in shock by how well preserved their dwellings were! So many cool places to visit within the caverns! It’s amazing to think people just left and here sits all this rich history. It was so beautiful to see close up! This had been on my husband’s bucket list for a while! Drink plenty of water!
Shernee B — Google review
The Cliff Palace tour was interesting and not as difficult as I thought it would be. The four ladders you climb are about 7 ft. The guide goes over the difficulty level before you start out. You have to leave plenty of time to drive to the start of the tour which is about 20 miles of twisting climbs up the mountain with some overlooks that are spectacular.
Kathy B — Google review
A good place to start your journey: rangers, information, gift shop, and bathroom. Oddly, our tour manager bought us there at end of our trip (after lunch). The snowy peaks in the background is San Juan Mountain. The 2012 cast bronze sculpture is 20' / 6m tall, by Edward James Fraughton (1939-2024), an American artist and inventor.
Irene E — Google review
Great visitor center. We love being able to drive through the park and visit sites. We did the hike to the petroglyphs. It took 2+ hours. Some was way some was pretty intense. It was a great hike. Awesome views!!

Aztec Ruins National Monument

Ancient Ruins
Aztec Ruins National Monument is an ancestral Puebloan site with a museum and trail connecting ceremonial structures and a Great Kiva. Built around AD 1100, it was connected to the larger settlement at Chaco by a road running due south. The reconstructed great kiva offers insight into ancient gatherings, while intact original roofs in several rooms provide a unique glimpse into the past. The attached museum is informative for those unable to visit Chaco.
This is an incredible National Monument that is free to visit. The staff here is incredibly friendly and informative. There are some great exhibits to see and some great souvenirs you can purchase. You can buy a guide to explain all the sites or you can listen to the free audio tour. The trail is very short, but you get to learn all about these ruins and explore inside them. This is such a treat, and everyone should visit at least once. We've been three times now, and I am still always amazed with this incredible place.
Diana O — Google review
Tall people beware. These ruins are great to see but will require you to duck down. There is plenty of room when you are walking through the general area and viewing the pits. What gets fun is when you stroll through the living quarters, this is where your kids will laugh at you as you squeeze through an area that they blaze through. It was fun and everyone had a good time!
Ricardo S — Google review
I found the ruins to be fascinating. How could they be built centuries ago? It wasn't crowded so I had some areas all to myself. The museum has some interesting artifacts and a gift shop. A bonus was finding out that it didn't cost anything to enter.
K R — Google review
Very informative visitor center with friendly staff. They also show a 15 min movie that is quite interesting. Nice static display as well. You can have a self guided walk with audio for the ruins. Bathrooms and water bottles refill station available in the center. The visitor is free.
Thierry S — Google review
Really cool! It’s amazing to stand in a place that was built a 1000 years ago. It’s free and was a good stop for a road trip break. About a 45 minute self guided tour. Highly recommend
WhatWilBWilB — Google review
We're glad we went to see these ruins, they are worth the trip. There is a lot to see and you can go in and walk through the buildings. There is one big kiva that has been reconstructed and many smaller dwellings. They have a very nice museum here too. This is a smaller archeological site that doesn't require lots of time or walking. Even the building that houses the museum/gift shop/ranger station is an historic house. There are lots of shade trees around the grounds, very pretty.
Sarah W — Google review
A definite must see. Beautiful welcome center with extremely helpful staff. The ruins themselves have been preserved with love. I love it.
Colleen N — Google review
We arrived early in the morning, downloaded the NPS app for the site and enjoyed every minute of the self guided tour. No admission charge. Friend knowledgeable ranger staff.

The San Juan National Forest Supervisor's Office is a vast and stunning natural playground located just north of Durango, offering a wide range of outdoor activities year-round. This expansive forest spans over 1.8 million acres and features diverse landscapes including ponderosa pines, snowcapped mountains, and fast-flowing rivers like the Animas River.
Talked to the nicest woman who gave us maps and tons of information about dispersed sites. Also had cute stuff for our kids. When my sister came into town I sent her here for all her questions.
Snailsandoxs M — Google review
12/2021 They have a big sign by the highway that says "national forest information". Don't believe it. In my experience most forest service employees are friendly, helpful folks. Not here. The person I spoke with was without a doubt the rudest and most unhelpful person I have spoken with in recent memory. Must have been in a hurry for lunchtime to roll around or maybe she had gas pains, but she clearly didn't have any time or any inclination to help me. This place is not meant for interaction with the public - it seems to be an office for their own business and they obviously don't want to be bothered by pesky citizens and their questions. Don't waste your time, keep your happy disposition, and just drive right on by.
Kim G — Google review
We had better success than some of the other reviewers. Though we had to wait and wait and then wait some more. We we able to get the maps we needed and advice on USFS road conditions. To the lady staff person who helped us: you were so right about the back roads in the Silverton area. We made it through but they were very rough even for our AWD and we managed to cause a brake line to fail! We visited September 20th 2021.
Den U — Google review
I didn't blame the forest service when firewood permits couldn't be issued thanks to Trump and company, but now that they're sending chainsaws into wilderness areas, you wonder what the people in charge here are even for. It's a wilderness area for a reason. We have plenty of trees they can go in and cut down in non-wilderness areas and team up with their BLM buddies east of town to drill for oil, leave the wilderness areas alone. Whoever made this decision should be ashamed and move back to Ohio where they can trash nature all they want.
Nathan S — Google review
Everybody here was incredibly helpful and a joy to interact with! Thanks again guys!

Really knowledgeable and friendly staff who will help if you have any questions. Also a good place to go if you're a tourist to get some maps or buy some fun souvenirs.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Tours
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a tourist attraction that offers scenic rides and a museum of railroad machinery. The railroad was built in the late 1990s to honor and share personal memories of how railroads shaped the nation. The tracks run through the San Juan National Forest, offering spectacular views to passengers on board. The locomotive used in this route is from the 1880s and has not been changed.
Great trip. First 1/2 of trip has the most dramatic views of the right side with 400' drops over the river. September tree colors were great. Seeing it ìn March there was snow and that was our favorite trip. Only got to go 1/2 waybecause of snow but it was the best and less expensive. Silverton is a fun little town.
BeverLi J — Google review
Great way to visit Silverton and see gorgeous mountain scenery along the way. I took the "gondola car" (both directions) and it suited me nicely. The outward-facing bench seat means _every_ seat is a window seat (vs. in the enclosed cars, where not everyone gets to be by a window). Downsides of being out of the enclosed cars: weather (hot, cold, or otherwise) and exhaust fumes. If you can handle those things then you might as well get the full experience. But you still have access to concessions and to the restroom like everyone else. It is a long ride, with a few hours in Silverton, so if you ride the train both ways be prepared for a full day. For a family with smaller children, the train up and bus back might be a better option just to shorten the duration. Photographers: you don't have much time to compose and shoot, so you kind of have to anticipate things coming up. Ask a conductor, they're really helpful and knowledgable at where your best shots might happen. Your wide angle lens maybe has a better chance; you can miss by a little and fix it later with a crop.
Brian B — Google review
This was a great experience, the views were incredible. I highly recommend the Night Sky car it has a glass roof that allows you to see the grandeur of the mountains as you go through the narrow passes. It also has complementary beverages and a snack, adult beverages are available. There's also a First Class attendant to serve you and provide information about the ride. Sean was our attendant and was great.
VBTom — Google review
Hi, everyone! Whenever you come to Durango please Do visit this historical museum. The entrance is free and there is also a souvenir shop in the entrance. I highly recommend this place. You will have a memorable time, I assure that. Until then take care and God bless.
Sigmund R — Google review
Durango is a beautiful town with lots of shops and eatery. The area around the train station is really nice. The hotels are a little pricey but you're on vacation so enjoy. The train ride to Silverton is breath taking. Worth every penny. I would do it again. The quaint town of Silverton embedded in the valley of the surrounding mountains is a must see. Yes I would definitely visit again.
Darlene M — Google review
As a senior citizen, this train ride was the greatest experience of my bucket list. A wonderful train ride which takes in Beautiful scenery and a great staff. It is a hidden treasure waiting to be explored. And ask for Nicholas, the head conductor as he is an encyclopedia of the train world. Very kind and thoughtful associates. Trust them to give you a pleasant experience.
T B — Google review
If you're visitimg here to see thebtrains rolling around I suggest checking out their schedule as the trains only leave and return a couple of times per day. This is an actual operating rail road so don't think you'll wander around the yard. The old station is cool and seeing the steam engine actually pulling a live train is neat but take note, they are converting the steam locos over to diesel so call and find out when the last remaining steam engine is running. There is a nice museum on-site and a gift shop as well.
Shawn M — Google review
This was absolutely worth every penny. The scenery is so beautiful that pictures just don't do it justice. You have got to take this train ride just once! You will not be disappointed. Make sure you take some snacks and drinks if you don't wanna pay for high prices on the ride. It also has a bathroom on board in the coach areas. The sites and silverton will take your breath away if you appreciate life. The deer at the end just made it a wonderful day.

Nestled just a short stroll from Historic Downtown Durango, the 3-star Durango Downtown Inn offers a laid-back stay with an indoor pool, gym, and business center. The property also features an on-site Applebee's for convenient dining options. Additionally, guests can enjoy nearby attractions such as the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum. For those seeking holistic wellness experiences, Spa hotels in Durango offer rejuvenating treatments and mindfulness practices to nourish the body and soul.
Our entire stay was great. Prices were reasonable, and every interaction with staff was exceptional. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the location is perfect. We're local and have stayed here a few times over the years, usually because we just want a night in town, but this time was due to a broken water pump from the last freeze. After explaining the situation (when we called to make a reservation), the manager made every effort to make sure we were taken care of for a couple of days. This was probably our best experience with this hotel, and we'll definitely stay here again-
Deanna G — Google review
Very disappointed considering the money you pay for these rooms. They need updating and maintenance badly. Rooms smell very old and musty. Hair dryer sparked and smoked when I tried to use. Plugs were are all old and loose wouldn't hold chargers in the socket. Gross stains on the carpet, no exhaust fan in the bathroom, the light switch for the bathroom had to be held and wiggled to stay on. The AC made a awful mildew smell in the room. We stayed 5 days and had cleaners come in mid week, they didn't changed out sheets and upon getting into bed didn't even make it just threw comforter up. Didn't replenish TP, Coffee, ice bucket liner or soap. When I found one to ask, she was eating her lunch in one of the rooms she was cleaning. This hotel has a great location and nice amenities, it's a shame it could be so nice. The pool could be really nice too, but they have all of the sliders in the room blocked so you can't open them, and the knob for the jets on the spa was broken off. Also, don't be fooled into paying river front view for 70 dollars more, you'll have cars and trees blocking your view. It's not really a river view. Front desk receptionist was very nice.
Karen D — Google review
It is NOT the Durango Downtown Inn anymore. It is now the Roost. The hotel rooms have been redone into studio apartments which are small and rent for an outrageous amount of money. I was merely visiting someone who lives there.
Kathy M — Google review
As others have noted here, this place closed as a hotel years ago, now from what I hear overpriced apartments. I read last hotel guests staying there with reservations were kicked out early after it sold. I stayed here several times over 5 year period when it was a hotel when shuttling my son back and forth to summer camp. Great family memories, but hotel often disappointed for reasons you can read in other reviews, wi-fi was out all the time, kinda grungy, but it did have a great location. Last time we stayed several things were not working right and we stopped staying here during our last camp trips. It is clear to me in hindsight the owner decided years ago to harvest the hotel, he overcharged, underdelivered, little care for the place, I watched it deteriorate over my stays, until he could sell the place for the real estate. Still because of a family connection I will never forget this place, it will always have a place in my heart, poor services and all. Durango is a fun place, stay in downtown area, great town to walk in.
David V — Google review
The place was just fine. I had no complaints at all.
Abulo J — Google review
Location - easy two block walk to middle of historic downtown. Staff - very accommodating and pleasant. Room - clean nice beds, prefer the courtyard view, river view is across motel parking lot. Other - laundry on site, pool good for little kids, nice courtyard with tables and benches. Would stay again.
Dennis S — Google review
Place was decent. Hot tub was great. Pool was way too cold!!! For an indoor pool I felt it should have been heated. Andrew, I believe his name was, was the best at the front counter! Very personable, knew his way around town and gave us great advice. Also got us more coffee for our room. 😘
Krystal R — Google review
We were pulling a teardrop trailer and in the back they have a great place to park long vehicles. We had some trouble getting a room assigned but it was fixed up quickly. The location was great. Just a short walk to the downtown restaurants, breweries, and shops. It's not fancy, but it was clean and they are pet friendly and we travel with our 5 lb little dog. We would definitely stay there again.

Pinkerton Hot Springs

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Hot Springs & Geysers
Pinkerton Hot Springs is a historical and geological site with stunning colors. Visitors can walk right up to the formation and dip their toes in the warm water. However, it's located close to a noisy highway and not suitable for soaking. The hot springs have been moved, allowing RV parking along the highway. It's an interesting roadside attraction with a rich history, despite not being a place for wading or soaking due to its setup as natural runoff springs rather than pools.
Pinkerton Hot Springs is a beautiful roadside stop just outside of Durango, Colorado. If you're expecting a hot spring for swimming or soaking, this isn't the place—but it’s still a unique and scenic spot worth visiting! You’ll find colorful mineral formations and a small flow of warm water where you can dip your feet and take a relaxing break. The contrast of the orange, red, and white minerals against the natural landscape is stunning and makes for great photos. There’s no admission fee, and it’s conveniently located right off Highway 550, so it's a perfect short stop to stretch your legs, snap a few pictures, and enjoy nature. Just remember there are no restrooms or facilities—it's a quick scenic pull-off, not a developed hot spring resort. Definitely worth a 5-10 minute visit if you're driving through! 🌿🚗📸
Renata B — Google review
Very beautiful and unique hot spring spouting from a soda shaped-fountain! It must’ve rained not too long ago from my visit because the small pool was overflowing with spring water. If you sat in it I’m sure it would cover an average height person (5’8) from the shoulders down. I only dipped my feet and would give it a 72° rating. Pretty lukewarm, not hot at all.
Virginia P — Google review
Beautiful views. It's not really a hot spring. It's more like a cold spring with some kind of moldy mushy water all around it. It's definitely worth stopping for the view. It's very sad about the fires. I'm praying for those affected by this horrible forest fire that started in a house on the hill. Its been burning for days.
Faith L — Google review
Cool place and it’s on the road and you can take a quick stop and visit. Water is flowing always and little slippery while go near to the water.
Madheswaran P — Google review
Free road side stop. I suggested a cloth or some wipes, you will get slimy. Rocks are very very slippery with growth. Warm rather than hot. Fun colors to look at. Don't expect to swim.
Alice B — Google review
Really pretty side of the road attraction to stop at for a few pictures. Gorgeous views all around. The colors that the minerals have created are beautiful.

It’s a cute spot but not really what you might expect if you come with the expectation to swim haha. You can dip your toes in if you wanted but not really much else.

Interesting thermal spring, though water is only lukewarm, located right next to Hwy 550 just north of Hermosa area. Lots of water spilling out & down hillside which covers the ground in multiple colors, red, orange, etc. Worth a quick stop.

Purgatory Resort

In the mountains, there is a resort that offers both summer and winter activities. It boasts a large area for skiing and snowboarding with quick lifts that minimize waiting times. The backside of the mountain is particularly fast with no long lines. There are many groomed areas to explore and multiple routes to take, making it an ideal destination for those who enjoy spending time on the slopes. Additionally, live bands perform at the base, adding to the overall experience.
We went right before the summer season started and it was wonderful. The shops were closed, but there were also less people which was refreshing. We met the GM Hana at the pool area and she made the experience more pleasant by helping us find some things and giving us ideas of things to do around the area.

Past experiences were better. This time around the condo we rented was not in good condition. The bathroom sinks barely had water pressure, the toilet wouldn’t flush, the shower doors were broken, it wasn’t as clean as it used to be and when we first walked in it smelled so strong like pinesol we had to open all the windows and doors to air it out. Called the front office to get things fixed and at first they said it will need to air over night, I explained the toilet had over flowed and we had to clean up the floors, what if it gets worse and over flows to the carpet? Then they sent someone to fix it, however the other bathroom started having issues. For the price we paid it wasn’t worth the hassle.
Natalie R — Google review
The place does offer cool views and some fun activities like the lift and alpine coaster. But, this was such a disappointment. We rented a two bedroom condo and as soon as we walked in, the place stunk. We immediately opened all windows and patio doors and started rubbing the fans. I found a can of sanitizing aerosol spray, but it didn’t mask the stink of the space. The carpet was disgusting, stains all throughout the floor from years of neglect. We were so excited initially, but the reality was gross. Our clothes stunk after we left. It’s also a hike from downtown Durango (we knew this), but there is an awesome Hot Springs facility nearby I’d highly recommend. As someone mentioned, many things at the resort are closed in the summer (naturally). For those reviewing before booking, I’d skip this place if I had high standards for where I stay. It needs some love (and renovation). Avoid the “I wish we’d have stayed somewhere else” feeling.

🚨FUTURE BRIDES BEWARE🚨 One of my friends had the MOST beautiful wedding at Dante’s at Purgatory Resort, a place where MANY are waitlisted to get married here. The venue, gorgeous, the ceremony outside gorgeous. Let’s talk about the reception and why Purgatory is getting 1 star from me. There is absolutely no reason that the kitchen should’ve been asked not once, but TWICE to please wait until the end of speeches to resume cleaning because THE ONLY thing you could hear after dinner during speeches WAS THE KITCHEN. There is no way being that close in proximity and the fact that they work there, that they definitely know how loud the kitchen can get. I asked for them to give us 20 minutes until we’re on the dance floor, another guest actually went and yelled at them 5 minutes later. I did not agree with this approach, yet the employees still did not stop banging plates and pans in the sink as well as the loud conversations. Employees were rude, did not stop interrupting and being loud. It was extremely disappointing as my friends GUEST, so you can only imagine how embarrassed she felt on HER day because of YOUR staff. Additionally, we double checked what our selections for the dinner, they served MULTIPLE people the wrong item. More than 5 of us have it documented that we ordered the steak, and they provided 4 of us with chicken. They wouldn’t bring out more steak, and argued with wedding guests about it as well. Highly unprofessional, I know how much my friends paid to have their wedding at Purgatory and the ONLY part that made it worth it was the view.
Lauren B — Google review
Went here for the summer activities. It was ok. Views were great, the mountain coaster was fun. Very fast! Wanted to do the alpine slide but they closed it because it was supposed to start sprinkling. Gem mining was ok. Given that we didn’t use the whole passes and the refund policy on the website is completely different than what is practiced, it was beyond disappointing as my son and I drove 4.5hrs to come up here. Don’t think I’ll be back for the summer activities, given they will close things at random and not uphold the refund policy stated online. Just enjoy the city of Durango and bypass this place in the summer.

Website was very misleading when booking lessons. It does not show availability but makes it seem the reservation takes, only making it further difficult in attempting to request a refund. Would not have chosen here if I had known.

Came here for the summer fun activities. Naturally it starts raining. No big deal, not the parks fault. But you'd think while waiting you could go explore the shops And places to eat, ya know kill some time waiting on the weather. Except every place here is closed other than the pizza place. Which is crazy during summer season.
Jake W — Google review
We went for the day to enjoy the ski lift, alpine slide, and mountain coaster. Our boys, 10 and 13, had the time of their lives. There was some lightening nearby that shut down those activities for a bit but we hung around, played disc golf, sat and just enjoyed the scenery.

Chimney Rock National Monument

Monument
Sights & Landmarks
Sprawling site with ruins of 200 structures from a native Pueblo settlement dating back 1,000 years.
I joined one of the tours there where the volunteer gave great information about it. The views of the Ancestral Pueblo buildings as well as Chimney Rock were amazing. There's a somewhat steep section to get up there so that is slowly especially going down as there are loose pebbles and sand that can make it slippery. The visitor center also has lots of information and a short movie about the site that I would recommend before going on the tour.
Alvin W — Google review
Nice monument offering excellent up close views of pit houses and other large structures. 2 trails - 1 is very accessible , paved path, the other requires some mobility and good shoes to ascend a short but steady climb with a dirt and stone path. The largest structure is up top of the hill offering great views all around. Small visitor center and gift shop as well.
Paul P — Google review
First thing first... what a Great Staff! They were very helpful, welcoming, and super nice! This is an amazing place to be able to walk around to explore and learn. Amazing views. The road up to the top from the visitor/information center is gravel and a little rough but very manageable in a sedan.
Wayne J — Google review
What a perfect stop! I had no clue, there were Pueblo Ruins at the top. They will shuttle you up if you don’t want to or can’t, drive up. Plan for an hour and a half here. The hike up top is NOT for the faint of heart. Major steep drop offs. Use your National Parks pass here. Con, you may want to fact check your volunteers, I had a gal tell me the ancient people were overweight! Ugh! Not!
Teresa G — Google review
There are two hikes on this. To get to the hikes you stop at the visitor center where they have water and some ice cream and snacks (small selection). Once you pay you drive to the top which is about a 15 minute drive. One hike is completely paved and wheelchair accessible. The other hike up to the top is rocky and has you close to the sides of the cliff. Amazing views as the top.
Benjamin B — Google review
Loved this place! One of my favorite historic pueblo locations to visit now.. Very friendl staff and volunteers, great little visitor center, fun dirt road to the top lot, adventurous little hike to the clifftop ruins, phenomenal views, and plenty of mysterious guesstimations about these people were doing here!
Brian B — Google review
It was really awesome, the staff were nice and knowledgeable. I didn't realize the history of the area or know about the Lunar standstill. The visitor center has a lot of information packed in a small space. Wear good hiking shoes and bring water if you plan to go to the top. Which I recommend. make sure to get the laminated maps with the guide. They have four or five enclosures/kennels in the shade with water for dogs so you don't leave fido in the car. No dogs on trails.

Beautiful low intensity hike with minimal elevations. Only one small section where one has to pay particular attention to footing. The balls are beautiful!

We should have worn our swimsuit! Great forest hike after a long slow drive. The hike is beautiful and, once at the falls, it's easier to explore by being in the water.
Chris G — Google review
Beautiful drive to the trailhead and beautiful falls. Make sure you download your map before you go-- cell service is scarce--dirt road all the way. The hike is short, but there are other trails on the way to this one that you can stop at. Watch out for cows 🐄

Amazing little gem. Short hike on a very nice, well maintained trail. Gorgeous views! The drive there was awesome, with places to pull off and enjoy the nature around you!

Super neat waterfall. Quick and easy trail & beautiful all around
Bridgette H — Google review
Once you reach the dirt on Piedra Rd it is about an hour long, rough drive through the mountains but well worth it! Watch out for the cows and flocks of wild turkeys. It had rained the night before so the trail was a little slick in places. Walking stick recommended. After a beautiful 20-30 minute hike you can reach the bottom of the falls. Due to the rain the falls were really flowing! It was to cold to jump in the water but we should have. We loved it. Highly recommend this visit. Don't forget your camera!
David T — Google review
Really pretty but signage to find the trails is minimal. Print out map directions if you are unfamiliar with the area, you will loose signal not even half way there. Otherwise, great, well-kept trail and gorgeous waterfall views.
Simone N — Google review
Short walk to an absolutely incredible view. 0.5 mile each way, some of the trail is tough due to large boulders and there is one section that is very narrow. When you get to the falls you can get some amazing views and cool off by doing your feet in the water!

Treasure Falls

Mentioned on

Waterfall
Nature & Parks
Treasure Falls is a picturesque 105-foot waterfall located in the National Forest accessible via two hiking trails from a parking lot. Visitors can opt for a quick view of the falls from the ample parking area or hike up to them, which entails navigating steep and often muddy terrain. Nonetheless, it is just a one-mile round trip hike that typically takes an hour depending on trail conditions and hiker ability. Appropriate footwear is recommended. The waterfall lies along Hwy.
Wonderful falls! This 105’ waterfall is impressive. You have about a 1/4 mile trek to the falls that was rocky and an elevation gain of over 300’. They had 3 different views. A handicap parking lot level and a half way view and then the top view at the base of the falls.
DElightful P — Google review
The hike is well worth it. It’s a must see. My husband’s granny made the hike with us so it’s doable for most people.
Grace W — Google review
Beautiful waterfall. You can see this from the lot, for those unable to make the way up. A short uphill, relative easy hike for gorgeous view!
Becki S — Google review
We'll worth the trip. Short hike to get really up close to the falls as well as to an overlook
CCA L — Google review
The waterfall is located near the road. Parking right next to the road and then walk about half a mile uphill. On the way, the first one will be a bridge with a view of the waterfall, but if you continue going uphill, you can reach the end from where there is an even better view. It's worth it to walk to the waterfall and admire God's creation.
Aleksandr B — Google review
Breathtaking. After a short, up-hill hike you’ll be rewarded! We were here in the winter so if you’re feeling unsure about hiking over snow and/or mud, take a walking stick. An amazing experience that shouldn’t be missed if you’re in the area.
Neil L — Google review
Wow! Absolutely stunning! Parking is small and it gets really busy but worth the wait. Two trails one for beginners and another much more difficult trail. It's about 1 mile round trip but highly recommend still taking water. An absolute gem and it's free. Take the hike and enjoy nature.

Wolf Creek Ski Area

Ski resort
Nature & Parks
The Wolf Creek Ski Area is a popular mountain destination for locals due to its powder days, short lift lines, and snowboard-friendly terrain. To make the most of your visit, it's recommended to arrive before 8:30 am for closer parking and consider bringing a picnic to save money. Base Camp is also suggested as an area to store belongings and eat food. The ski resort offers some of the best runs for both experienced skiers and beginners alike.
First time skier, & this was an awesome experience! Every employee there was so welcoming, friendly, & helpful! Amazing customer service! Tyler was so knowledgeable & warm. She got us all set up for our 1st ski lesson. Rick was the friendliest personality, & even gave my kids an orange from his own lunch box when they were having a meltdown. Shannon was our instructor, & she was SO positive, friendly, kind, & a wonderful teacher. We went in with low expectations & positive attitudes, & had the best experience! All the employees really seemed like they loved what they were doing, enjoyed sharing their passion for winter sports, & really wanted pass that on to others. Thank you!!!
Natalie G — Google review
First skied at Wolf Creek 10+ years ago with my wife, and recently returned over Spring Break with the spawn. Really loved the independence and vitality of skiing for skiing's sake here, not the commercialization of everything you find at Vail-associated hills. Had melt-freeze spring conditions but that meant groomers in the morning and exploration in the afternoon! If you like skiing trees, this is your place - there are defined runs, but ample room to ski most any line you please as you venture into the glades.
Joseph K — Google review
We’ve always loved skiing Wolfe Creek. It’s beautiful, runs for all levels of ski/snow boarders & all of the employees we have encountered are friendly and helpful. These 2 medics that helped my son were amazing & very concerned/caring. WARNING…DO NOT purchase more than 1 lift ticket per day just in case you have someone in your family that gets injured. They DO NOT refund lift ticket purchases even if it required being medi-flighted! We were out about $300 due to our 14yr old son falling on a run on Day 1 and having to be medi-flighted to CO springs after purchasing 2 day lift tickets for our family of 4. They also don’t honor discounts for military veteran family members. They give a discount to the veteran only. We will probably go back to Monarch in the future. I called Monarch’s sales office and inquired about refunds of lift tickets if severe accidents occurred & they said they would absolutely refund the lift tickets purchased for the entire family if we were displaced. My son lacerated his right kidney (almost in half) on “caution corner”. Be careful in that area! Thankfully, he’s healing up & will be fine. We had a blast while we were there, but really disappointed in the unwillingness to refund our lift ticket money. We could’ve definitely used the xtra $$ after medi-flighting, xtra expenses & a 4day hospital stay in CO Springs 🥴

A hidden gem in colorado, no lines, you don't have to pay for parking, reasonable lift tickets. I recommend you take alberta chair, up to the knife ridge staircase. You gotta do a little bit of hiking to get to the staircase, take stairs, and you cross a bridge at the top You ski down the ridge and then you can get a snow Caterpillar to pick you up and tow you up to horseshoe bowl. Epic experience If you're going out on the knife, bring an avalanche beacon.

Went a couple of weeks ago. Foot of powder, excellent terrain, friendly locals, no lift lines, loved this mountain. Nice lodge at the base with food and small bar as well. If you want some local skiing with great snow, this is the spot you've been looking for.
David S — Google review
Mmmmight be my favorite ski area. Didn’t get much fresh snow this time but it was still perfect conditions. 5 minute wait for tickets at the base area. On New Year’s Eve. $100. Which is a great deal compared to everywhere else. Parking shuttle system was efficient. Definitely a family mountain. Terrain is terrific. And it’s huge. Can’t wait to go back.

This is one of my favorite ski hills in Colorado, and it's definitely the best ski school for kids! After just three days, my little one is skiing like a pro! This is my third time here, and I can’t wait to come back again. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. A special thanks to Coach Michael for the amazing snowboard lessons—after just two days, I can snowboard down any hill! It’s incredible!
Iryna — Google review
Wolf Creek Ski Resort offers an amazing mountain experience, but there are a few things to keep in mind. I would not recommend renting equipment from here. The employees were rude, and it took forever to get a pair of boots. For rentals, check out Ski and Bow Rack—they were much better. Also, don’t bother purchasing lift tickets or lessons ahead of time. Even with tickets already bought, you’ll still have to wait in long lines, which is a bit frustrating. On the plus side, the mountain is fantastic! It’s perfect for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, with excellent coverage and most runs usually open, no matter the conditions. A big shoutout to Paige L., who did an amazing job teaching my nephew how to snowboard. He had an awesome time, and she made it a great experience! The resort is also just a quick drive from either South Fork or Pagosa Springs, so getting there is easy. Overall, while there were a few service issues, the skiing and snowboarding experience on the mountain made up for it.

Creede Repertory Theatre is a must-visit destination during the summer season, offering a diverse range of plays, musicals, and concerts in a charming 1930s venue. The theater showcases both classical and contemporary productions, providing an enriching cultural experience for visitors. Additionally, the annual Taste of Creede event features artist demonstrations, live music, and a silver-chef cooking competition.
We saw the August 26th performance of the amazing Xanadu! I wish I could give it 10 stars! We were on vacation and it was our first time viewing a play at this theater. We've watched the movie many times so wondered how in the world this could be done on a smallish stage......with roller skating! From the very first song, I'm Alive!, we were dazzled for the rest of the night! It was hilarious at times and poignant as well. Such professional performers with amazing talented vocals! Tears flowed from the beauty and perfection of the songs. It all worked perfectly and our admiration for this theater is huge. We will definitely come back again!

This was a wonderful experience aboard an operating steam engine. We took our toddler(total party size:5) and went with the Deluxe Car. This was nice because the table we had gave them room to do little activities in between points of interest. Kiddo also took a nap right on the floor. Our attendant was Darlene, she was amazing and delivered top notch service. Lunch was ok, I would compare it to college cafeteria style buffet with plenty of options. Staff there was kind and helpful. We would absolutely do this trip again.

Absolutely loved the train ride! From a landscape photographers point of view it was a dream come true for me as I enjoyed the new scenery for new ideas. When we stopped in osier, the lunch was fabulous and thank you for all the hard work of the people working there to provide us lunch! Embark on a journey through the pristine landscapes of Colorado with a ride on the Colorado Pacific Rio Grande Railroad. This scenic railroad offers an opportunity to explore untouched wilderness that has remained unchanged for centuries, providing a glimpse into the golden era of rail travel. Traverse breathtaking terrain, including majestic mountains, expansive valleys, and picturesque meadows. While freight trains operate at night, visitors can enjoy the captivating tourist railroad during the day.
A very wealthy guy bought this railroad out of bankruptcy, he owns a bunch of farms and farm companies nearby, and renovated this line to serve the local agricultural community. Dude has mad money. The new locomotives are cool, but there is a ton of heritage equipment all over the property. Old vista domes, streamlined passenger cars, classic diesels. Most of it can be seen from nearby public parks and parking lots. This line extends all the way to Creede. How cool would a passenger train to Creede be?

I am not kidding when I say that these inconsiderate people leave their trains running in one place all night long. We have had sleepless night because they have trains making so much noise it is ridiculous. I wish I could find everyone here who thought this was a good idea so I play a collection of annoying sounds while they try to sleep. Have some consideration. It’s insane.

Wildlife park on a fish farm with albino alligators, crocs & snakes, plus gator-wrestling lessons.
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the gator farm. It was well worth the trip. All of the gator experts and volunteers we met were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was a very unique experience and I’m glad we took the detour to do it. It was actually amazing to see how many reptiles these guys have rescued! My kids were so excited they got to hold a baby gator and pet a tortoise.
Christine W — Google review
We LOVED our visit to the reptile park. This was one of our unplanned stops to our trip to Colorado and it was such a fun time! It’s very interactive we got to hold different reptiles, go in a tortoise area/feed them, hold a bird, feed the gators! You get super close to the gators as well and get to hold a smaller one. Really a great experience . Beware there are a lot of flies and it can smell, but literally you’re in a working farm and it’s kinda expected. Would definitely recommend!

The staff is AMAZING! This location is incredibly engaging and informative. A wonderful variety of flora and fauna are on display, you can tell how passionate the staff is and they are super helpful. We have visited many times over the years ans it just keeps getting better and better.
Rigel C — Google review
Really interesting to see all the gators and other reptiles in an environment like CO but definitely overpriced. It's $30 for adults and $15 for kids. My son really had a good time and held snakes, lizards, and a baby alligator. He fed tortoises and watched alligators being fed. But there wasn't a ton to do for $30, other than see many, many alligators and crocodiles. We would have liked to purchase t-shirts but they were also overpriced, with some being priced at $50. I would still go back and recommend people go. It's an interesting side attraction to the sand dunes and at least the money goes to housing animals that might be abandoned otherwise (as they do tend to home animals that people purchased as pets and could not longer care for).
Preston B — Google review
I've driven past this for years, not understanding how important the work they undertake is. Colorado Gators Reptile is an amazing rescue organization, taking in all kinds of wonderful animals. Of course, the highlight are the reptiles; but it's truly so much more!! ❣️ Thank you, I had a wonderful time.
Deb D — Google review
Lots of fun reptiles to see. They even have some cats that hang out! Took our 3 year old and he absolutely loved it. I hadn't been there in almost 30 years but it was just as I remember. The people there are super friendly and helpful also. Kinda pricy but worth it!
Jillian H — Google review
This was so much fun! There's a ton of reptiles. Staff are incredibly nice and helpful. We were told that 90% of the animals there are rescues and brought in by individuals who can no longer care for their pets. There's even a very large iguana that was left out and found in a park who's so friendly and loves head scratches 💕 it would be nice to see the ponds expanded as the Crocs seems to be in very close quarters with one another. The path around gets a bit confusing towards the end as there's several ways to cut through and it didn't seem the last bit was as clearly marked. But, backtracking a little didn't hurt at all and we saw a few reptiles that we missed the first time😊 And, you can hold a baby crocodile to show bravery 😉 Plenty of souvenirs to choose from and bottled water and pop as well. Overall, a great learning experience

We stayed here in our travel trailer for 4 days. We arrived on Thursday with no reservations having no idea how busy this place can get. Justin, the general manager, was very welcoming and nice. Due to my lack of reservations, the full hookup sites were booked, but he showed us a couple of other spots that he thought would work for us. We ended up staying in their overflow / group spot. Worked great for us. The soaking pools are great in the Greenhouse with four different temperatures to choose from. The food was amazing and actually quite fairly priced! Coco and Teddy are nothing but great vibes and energy, very easy going. Overall, a great place to stop at for a soak and bite to eat!

WOW! You have to visit! This place is absolutely amazing! The staff (special shout-out to Justin, CoCo, and Teddy) truly make the experience wonderful. Even though we arrived while it was closed for cleaning, they were so welcoming. We stayed in the overflow lot and it was perfect. The adults-only side of the hot springs is incredible—not just the variety of pools, but also the beautiful plants that make the space feel so unique. And the food… the cooks will blow your mind with the delicious dishes they create. Highly recommend this place!

We've had so many wonderful experiences here! Great place for family, personal relaxation, and a quick getaway trip. Also works well for a Basecamp for day trips around the Valley. Nothing is really more than 2 hours from here tops including Chama, NM or Trinidad, CO. Anne at the front desk is awesome! So helpful! We've been in RV spots in the front and back areas. Both are equally nice for different reasons. The food here is exceptional! You really wouldn't predict to find gourmet filet mignon and baby potatoes poolside, but Scott is fantastic at the Metal Box grill in the Greenhouse. Our bartender Teddy was funny and friendly. These are just a few of the many wonderful employees here. They are all so guest and experience oriented, it really matters and makes a difference. They remember your name and face. They joke with you like you've been a regular for years. Definitely our favorite Hot Springs experience in Colorado, and the one we will be coming back to for years to come.

My boyfriend & I stayed here for 2 days and it was great! We spent our time in the hot springs inside of the greenhouse (21+) & had the most PHENOMENAL bartender. Dionne was absolutely wonderful to us!! I’m not sure what their cabins are like, we stayed at a tent site. They do have a shower & laundry self-service station which is convenient, the showers do take quarters. There are also showers by the pool & in the greenhouse that don’t cost anything. I recommend this place to anyone in the area or passing through, I will be back here in the near future!

A wonderful adult site in the Greenhouse with several hot spring pools at different temps and a great bar with food. Don't miss the sauna either! Lots of cozy hideaways to read, relax chat. Wonderful plants. Also a seperate great area for families too!

Soaked in the Greenhouse during a long roadtrip to Santa Fe and it was lovely! Especially appreciated all the lovely plants, the varying degrees of hot water (ideal for me was the 108 degree pool*), no kids running around, and adult beverages 😝 One thing that needs improvement: the front entrance was so slow to get people in the door .. and then you had to pay and second fee to get into the greenhouse. That all took 20 minutes of what could have been soaking time! Maybe a separate entrance and fee would work better? * I didn’t try “the coffin” but apparently it’s even hotter 🥵

My friends who are members are hosting me for 1 week out of state. We went to water class from 9-10am on Monday 10/27/25. The fee for myself as a guest I was told at check in was $6.00 with accompanying a member. A very fair price and paid it. After water class we also patronized the restaurant spending money to have lunch. Today 10/29/25 we were looking forward to water class from 9-10am. When we arrived I handed my $6.00 to the woman at check in. I was informed that they do not honor that fee anymore with a member. Then the woman checked to make sure and the 2nd person who had checked me in on Monday and had me pay $6.00 came to the check in counter and said that they do not honor the reduced fee. I reminded them that I had been there on Monday 10/27 as a guest with my friend who is a member and had paid $6.00. The daily rate is $18.00. Not only did my friend say not to pay, but she went to inform the entire water class that we would not be attending the class due to me having to pay $ 18.00 for the class instead of honoring the $6.00 rate that I had paid on Monday 10/27 for the 1 hour water class. We left and did not participate in the class. As a business not only did they lose out on a guest, but also my friends and myself patronizing the restaurant afterwards to eat lunch. I find the daily rate of $18.00 to be exorbitant for a 1 hour water class, and as a guest with a member should have a water class fee. As far as customer service is concerned, it was poor and the women quite rude. Businesses lose customers when changing policies on a whim. Good customer service would have been to honor the $6.00 fee since I was there 2 days prior and had paid that fee. As a business set a water class fee only for guests and post it along with the other rates. I visit often and always looked forward to water class when in town. I will not patronize the pool again after this. I do not recommend this establishment if you are a guest from out of town. I will be going to other hotsprings pools in the area and spend my money elsewhere.

The campsites are absolutely amazing! You can see the stars unlike any place I've been to. It feels like home here! The food in the springs area, was phenomenal. They are very clean and thorough. Even though they took their time to ensure quality it was the best Gyro I have ever had! Exceptional staff! The only issue that I see was the rude customers. Very snarky and judgemental! Never an issue with anyone who worked here! 10 out of 10 would recommend to anyone

Shrine of the Stations of the Cross

Mentioned on

Shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Shrine of the Stations of the Cross, located near the Blood of Christ Mountains, features 15 life-sized statues depicting scenes from Jesus's crucifixion. The sculptures are spread along a 1-mile pathway that offers visitors a chance to take a leisurely walk and reflect on each station. The trail is relatively easy, with some elevation gain, but it provides beautiful views and resting spots along the way.
Amazing short walk uphill about 175 feet. Beautiful sculptures at every station. Chapel dominates the mesa and a grotto is a bonus. Definitely worth the side excursion. Free. No lines. Just wander and appreciate.
J W — Google review
Beautiful view. The church wasn't open, and no hours were posted. There is a bronze statue path that starts at the base of the mountain and goes up a path to the top. If you drive to the top, the statues start at number 12. Very peaceful.
Taylor F — Google review
Both hiked and drove to the top. Beautiful trail and vistas! Another second higher trail and public restrooms at the top just off the parking lot.
Barbara R — Google review
Easy hike up to the church but the stars of the show are the fabulous 15 stages of the cross Passion) bronze statues. All so expressive and stunning. The views from the top are stunning. Shame there’s no information about the church itself and its origins
Lisa D — Google review
This place is great for a little pilgrimage. Moving sculptures and scripture explaining each scene of Jesus's passion. Must start at the bottom accessible from the highway to begin at the 1st Station. You can drive up a dirt road to the chapel where the 15th Station is (Resurrection added) but if you want to do the Stations in order you will have to walk down. The path is gravel, very easy trail and the whole journey is probably less than a half mile.
P G — Google review
Stopped while driving through and glad we did. Nice easy hike to the top of the hill and back. Gorgeous views and touching statues along the way make this a must.
Scott G — Google review
I wish I'd had more time to walk all the stations. The crucifixion/resurrection sculptures were beautiful and the chapel had an old-west mission, reverential vibe to it. Great views from the chapel and trail. Will return to catch the whole station trail.
Brian C — Google review
This place is beautiful. Not a terribly difficult walk, but bring water! Definitely bring a camera. Plan on taking some time to enjoy not only the bronze sculptures, the station plaques, the path, but turn around every now and then and take in the breathtaking scenery of the valley. The church at the top is a sanctuary to cool down before your descent. Not to be missed. This is a treasure.

Zapata Falls

Waterfall
Nature & Parks
30-ft. waterfall reachable by a brief crevasse hike wading through water & over slippery rocks.
Loved Zapata Falls! Not too far from the Sand Dunes which is why we stopped. It’s a mild hike. There were A LOT of people. Much more than I had anticipated to see but overall we had our brief moment with the falls. Beautiful landscape as you walk up as you can see the dunes. There was still run off from the mountains which made for a wet walk through to the falls. We wore our Chaco sandals and it worked perfect. Your feet will get wet. Water was very cold again, I believe due to the run off. Not sharing the actual falls because you should experience it in real time. Have fun!
Anna Z — Google review
The path is rocky, but short. I was back there in the morning and it was just a perfect time to enjoy the falls. The rocks can be slick. Just pay attention.
Jana W — Google review
The trail up to the river isn’t great, but the waterfall is impressive. You have to walk up the river to reach it, and it’s absolutely worth freezing your feet! We visited in August and the road up to the trail was recently paved.
Brooke W — Google review
Incredibly beautiful and surprisingly quick hike! To get to the actual falls, you have to walk through ankle deep rocky water. Keep in mind that even in the summer, the water is VERY cold. Since it was pretty accessible to at least the river's edge, the trail can get pretty crowded, but there are tons of lovely areas to sit and relax by the river if you decide to wait to wade to the falls.
Carlee C — Google review
Awesome short hike. Waterfalls are cool and water is cold. Don’t be afraid to get your feet wet and head to the back of the little canyon to see the bigger falls.
Tyler H — Google review
This place is absolutely beautiful!! There is about a mile hike back into the waterfall. I hiked it in sandals, so you could really do it and almost any kind of footwear.. I definitely recommend bringing some water! I highly suggest you do not drink the waterfall water.. definitely a cool little spot to pack a lunch and eat it back by the waterfall! The place is busy as it’s definitely a tourist place! They should have a visitor center where I can buy a magnet. I’ll definitely be returning.
Sweetie — Google review
Super easy hike! Go EARLY to avoid crowds, otherwise, you’ll be waiting in line to cross the river to get to the waterfall. Bring waterproof hiking boots, or water shoes to get to the waterfall a little easier. Great views of the Sand Dunes too!
Reinelle A — Google review
Loved the falls. It has some interesting aprt to it where you have to go through the water to see the falls. Water was really cold in August and hike was nkt difficult to reach here. Have the water shoes ready to view the falls. It is before the Great Sandunes entrance and you don't have to pay to get here.

Restored old fort. For the price it is very informative with great displays. Well worth an hours stop when passing through. So much of history is lost especially the marginalized people like indigenous people and african americans. The exhibits on the contributions of The Buffalo Soldiers and lives of the Ute people tell stories that are not taught in schools. Stop if you have time.
Wendy B — Google review
Stopped in not really expecting much as it's a small town but we were really surprised. The staff was super friendly and informative. There's multiple buildings to walk through that show and preserve the history. Loves the little dioramas and videos that played throughout. Didn't think the kiddos would be interested but they ran from building to building in excitement to see what's next. The "admission" was definitely reasonable (cheap if you ask me lol). Highly recommend a stop if you're in the area.
Hotel G — Google review
The local history here is phenomenal. An immersive experience is given whether just visit or being led by a tour guide. The gift shop has neat (and local) options. The "small stories" of this region in light of major events in history (war, pioneer days) cultivates an appreciation for the area. An area like the San Luis Valley may not be significant to the U.S. or world at large, though for locals and tourists alike, a place like here can ensue an apple for what's happened.
Isaiah A — Google review
The cost of admission for this little museum is absolutely worth it! They've done a lot to include a myriad of voices related to the history of Fort Garland and the American West. In general. The artistic arrangement of many of the displays is top notch. I particularly appreciate that while they've added missing and marginalized voices to the exhibits, they have not completely erased the history of Kit Carson and the cavalry from this site.
Warman H — Google review
I stopped at this museum last year in March and just now making a review of it. Nice western history museum of the area. I mostly took pics of the insides of the buildings. They have a nice gift shop in the front.

Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center

Visitor center
Nature & Parks
Facility offering exhibits & a short film about the park, plus a bookstore, snacks & souvenirs.
I always love stopping in at a visitors center. This one offers great info, a beautiful overview of the mountains and dunes, a short easy self guided path around the center and a 15 min well made movie showcasing the dunes, river, mountains and seasons of this very unusual National Park. Free parking with pass. We had no wait on our September weekday visit with plenty of parking. No reservations or timed entry required.
Tyler D — Google review
This national Park was better than I expected. Dunes look very cool with mountains as backdrop. If you're going to hike the dunes you should wear a mask and eye glasses as the blowing sand is worse than you can imagine. There are also some nice mountain trails.
John M — Google review
Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of few parks that doesn't require a timed entry pass this summer. My family went during the week around 10am when it was 60° and only had 1 car in front of us. It had rained the day before and early morning, so the sand was cool and some areas hard packed that made walking easy. Dogs are allowed on the dunes. My pups loved it, rolling and digging in the sand. Just be aware the sand can get extremely hot in hotter temps. Bring water for you and pups or stop at the Oasis before you get into the park. Definitely must do if you want to cross it off your national park list. 🥰
Cynthia M — Google review
Nice visitor center with a great view of the dunes and an informative video of how it was created and other interesting facts. you can rent a board to slide down the dunes just before the visitor center at the oasis. “… midnight at the oasis send your camel to bed…” it’s a song - look it up 🤣
David Z — Google review
This park is great. Be ready for a hard workout if you opt to go to the top of the dunes. I think it's the hardest 1.15 miles I've ever done and I've done 10 half marathons and 2 full marathons!
Jeremy M — Google review
It's $25 for a car or SUV per day. It's definitely worth the cost. If you're truly want to experience the area, a 4x4 vehicle is a requirement to get close to the sand dunes . Amazing place.
Sally R — Google review
Nice and well mantained visitor center. They have a room for amphitheatre where you can watch a move to learn more about the park and the area. They have a gift shop which has some good stuff. You can see the sunes behind the visitor center and it looks beautiful. They have plenty of parking.
Mohit G — Google review
Worth the visit. Make sure to rent sand boards from oasis near the park entry sign. It is absolute fun to play in the sand. There are showers to clean up after playing in sand. The only thing is that it is quite a walk from the parking to the dunes

Bishop Castle

Mentioned on

Castle
Bishop Castle is a unique and fascinating stone structure built by local resident Jim Bishop over the course of his lifetime. The castle, which features bridges, turrets, and even a fire-breathing dragon all handmade by Bishop himself, offers self-guided tours and includes a gift shop. Despite legal battles and complaints, the castle continues to stand as a testament to Bishop's dedication and creativity. Visitors can explore the castle for free but should be cautious as they navigate its various levels.
Really cool and fun place. Just be careful some areas are potentially dangerous, and disclaimers are clearly in place. Many climbing places do not have handrails and some parts of the floor in the staircases are missing so just be careful while exploring the place, read the sign at the entrance and enter at your own risk. Also don't miss the gift shop which is small but cool.
Xavier K — Google review
This castle was definitely worth the visit! We were driving back to Albuquerque from Colorado and wanted to visit the castle on our way home. The drive was there was so beautiful, truly scenic! When we arrived at the castle, I was in complete awe over the place. There was plenty of parking and clean restrooms. The animals from the squirrels to the goats were so charming. Exploring the castle was fun and exciting and a little scary in places. But you get to choose where you go and what you do, explore completely on your own which I loved! There was a violinist playing amazing music in the great main room which definitely added to the experience. There's a snack area and a gift shop as well. I highly recommend the visit and the drive! I would also recommend donated a few dollars when you do visit. I think the owners are very generous to open this space to the public and not charge. Even the snack area which offered snacks and cold drinks, charged on an honor system. Very cool!!!!
Dianna M — Google review
Such a beautiful hand made castle! As you would expect with a project of this magnitude being done by just one person for the bulk of it, there are still a lot of places where the floor and wall don't meet, or holes in stairs that are yet to be fixed. The design of it is super cool though, and there are lots of places to climb to breathtaking views. This place has City Museum vibes, but a little sketchier. Willard, Jim, and now Robert have made something really cool. They have magnets and keychains in the gift shop. There is also a little snack stand with hot food and sweets. Entry is completely free, but donations accepted. When we went there was a chainsaw art guy and axe throwing. We went in mid- October, the weather was perfect and the crowd was minimal.
Jessica R — Google review
Such a unique roadside attraction! Definitely worth seeing if you're anywhere nearby. There's a bit of a Mad Max vibe going on. Do be warned though that there are signs very clearly stating you are entering at your own risk and your safety is not guaranteed.
Angie — Google review
This is a quirky offbeat free adventure. I read the founder of Colorado Springs built this Castle and used to live in it (not sure though). It is definitely a unique place and worth the trip if you're in the area. It's about 20 miles off of the highway. Be careful and watch where you step, there are a few broken steps or loose flooring - there is a sign stating they are not responsible for accidents. Go enjoy the cool views, winding staircases and balconies.
Tracey S — Google review
This is a very interesting place to visit. I didn't go up into the towers. Unfortunately the gift shop was closed when we were there today. The castle is free to enter. I spoke with person who told me that Mr. Bishop had died sometime in the last year. They accept donations.
Dawne K — Google review
Great place to visit. I just hope people won't vandalize it. Additional safety for spots that people would likely go to and take pictures. It's free.
Chester F — Google review
Such a cool place! Definitely worth the visit. The drive is beautiful. I recommend visiting during the weekdays. Less people and you can enjoy more space to yourself. They also have an area behind the castle to feed goats and chickens. Bring quarters.

Museum of Friends

Must see art museum in the charming town of Walsenburg! Founders Maria and Brendt are so passionate about art - their enthusiasm is contagious! The 1st floor features regularly rotating art exhibits. Be sure to take a tour of the 2nd floor - a breathtaking, enormous collection of varied art pieces. Make a weekend of it and enjoy drinks at the Crafty Canary Brewery around the corner or pizza/ice cream at Gub Gub’s in the town center. The town is bright and welcoming with murals spread about between shops. Once you visit the Museum of Friends you will want others to visit too!

My three little pups and I are on vacation in Walsenburg, staying at a cute little Airbnb outside of town. I called first to make sure my little dogs would be welcome inside this Art Museum and they certainly were! The staff was so friendly with me and with them and Candice gave us a private tour explaining each little room upstairs and different art works and their artists. They all made us feel right at home and what a collection they have! They have more than I saw in the art venues in Santa Fe!
April — Google review
This is a hidden gem! It is a must see place for anyone interested in contemporary American counterculture art. You could spend days exploring the permanent exhibition on the 2nd floor. And the curators are great storytellers. They personally knew and/or are friends with each artist represented here. If you wanna know what was happening in the American counterculture art in 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond, you should see this place.
Archil G — Google review
Wandered in here, not knowing what to expect, but now wish I had more time to sink my teeth into it. Art lovers will find a lot to explore. It's a giant collection of art and a staff eager to tell you all about it. I left learning more about the importance of the collection, the town itself, and also - why this town specifically has such a collection. Maybe add two hours to your trip to stop by here. If you're the type of person who wants to explore a library of specific art history, you'll find a lot to love here.
Shelby B — Google review
Such a lovely collection and community! Everyone I met was incredibly welcoming and kind, Brad gave me a private tour and explained his cataloguing work. Maria even gave me the name of an artist from my hometown to reach out to and we did an art swap!! As a young artist, this really meant a lot to me!!

The Museum of Friends is an extraordinary gem that beautifully celebrates the power of art. From the moment we stepped through its doors, we were captivated by the vibrant energy and the inspiring collection that awaited us. The first thing that struck us was the incredibly warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff at the Museum of Friends are friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about the exhibits. Their enthusiasm is contagious and enhances the entire experience. Their dedication to preserving and sharing the stories behind each artwork truly shines through. The museum showcases an impressive range of pieces from local artists and beyond, spanning various mediums and styles. No mater what your personal taste in art is, there's something for everyone to admire and appreciate. Each piece tells a unique story and offers a glimpse into the artist's creative journey. In conclusion, the Museum of Friends in Walsenburg, Colorado, is a well worth the stop. With its impressive collection, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to fostering connections, it is an absolute must-visit for anyone seeking an inspiring and uplifting cultural experience.

This place is amazing!! Tons of art covering all of the walls and a very unique museum layout. Diverse selection of art, you will definitely see a lot that you like. Staff is so friendly, can't miss in the CO Springs Area!
KaRo J — Google review
This place is AMAZING. The first floor features traveling exhibits which are switched out every few months. The upper floor features a permanent collection and it is mind-blowingly amazing. It felt like I was swimming in art. Artists that I have heard of before, and many artists that I have never heard of before. A little local art, and a lot of New York art. You get a little taste of the Colorado communes from the '60s. Loads of fabulous printwork. Sculpture, pencil drawings, ink drawings, mixed media, collage, oils on canvas and other substrates, acrylics, photography, watercolor, even broken glass. There's also one whole room devoted to Hawaii and Pacific island art and craft, and stepping foot into this room felt like I was catapulted into another world. I can't believe that this quality, variety, and sheer volume of art is right here in downtown Walsenburg! Absolutely worth your while. You can book a tour through their website. Please be sure to make a monetary donation.

Trinidad Lake State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park
Scenic state park with 800-acre lake offering fishing, hiking, camping & summertime family programs.
I took my dog to Carpios Cove so she could get a refreshing swim before we hit the other trails in the park. The water level was high and shoreline was mostly sandstone so the doggo didn't turn into a muddy mess after the swim. Other trails were nice but very dry with no water access.
Shay S — Google review
Came ere to camp for a few nights and loved the campsite. Lake was great and the hike was fun! Wish they had more full hookup RV spots but the dump site is very close.
David Y — Google review
This location will take you to the office so you can pay 10$ for day use, camping is a little more but worth it or you can probably pay online...scenery is awesome there's also a little park for kids so definitely recommended for small to medium sized groups. You will have to drive like 5 minutes to the actual swimming area of the lake, I wouldn't recommend trying to get down to the lake from up top because it's steep and could get dangerous for the average folk. Good luck and Stay Safe!
Israel S — Google review
We have stayed in this park three times in the last year: July 2024, August 2024, and September 2025. It is one of our favorite places to stay in our RV for a number of reasons. Big camping spaces, great fire pits, excellent weather, trails and bike paths, and lovely location. There are only a few spots with full hook ups, which we prefer, but we stayed one night on the South Shore with no hook ups and loved the remoteness of dry camping. We generally use our own shower when we camp, but we used the nearby showers which were clean with plenty of hot water. Be patient with the laundry as you can only use credit cards and the machines are finicky. We paid $41 a night plus parking passes for our RV and our tow vehicle. Seemed redundant to me and I couldn’t help wonder why we had to pay twice. Probably cheaper if you get a state park pass. If you come to Trinidad on a First Friday, make sure you go to the Art Walk. The Hilton has a good happy hour Monday - Friday. In the early summer, catch a Trinidad Triggers baseball game. If you are pickleball players, the city has just installed excellent courts at Los Ninos Park and people play most days at 8:00am.
Linne C — Google review
If you're looking for a lakeside escape with a touch of wild charm, Trinidad Lake State Park definitely delivers. Just don’t forget your bug spray and sense of humor. The lake itself is gorgeous. Serene waters set against rolling hills and open skies serve up some of the most breathtaking sunsets we've seen in a long time. Think pastel clouds, golden reflections, and that perfect evening hush that makes you pause and just be. Bring a camera or at least the urge to stop and stare. Fishing? Oh, yes. The lake is loaded. Whether you're an expert angler or just tossing a line in for fun, chances are good you'll catch something… or at least get a great story trying. Now, let’s talk about the real stars of the park: the bugs. If you're a fan of grasshoppers, this is your Disneyland. They're everywhere! Hopping across trails, surprising you mid-step, and generally making sure you know you’re not alone. Add in a variety of other winged, crawling, and chirping critters, and you’ve got a very active little ecosystem keeping you company. It's all part of the charm. Unless you're squeamish. In which case: bug spray. Lots. The only thing we really wished for? A few more trees or shaded spots near the water. On hot days, the sun can feel relentless, and finding a cool place to rest takes some effort. A little extra greenery would go a long way for comfort and aesthetics. But the wide open views have their own appeal. Overall, Trinidad Lake State Park is a scenic, peaceful, and slightly buggy adventure worth having. Pack a hat, bring your sense of adventure, and enjoy the quirky beauty of southern Colorado.
HFL ( — Google review
Beautiful place, man made lake but with charm and cool vistas. Park has lots of amenities like: Boat Ramp , camping grounds, trails, kids play sets and lots of Grill bungalows all round.
Jose M — Google review
Beautiful lake just outside of Trinidad. The camp grounds are broken into a cluster up on the north ridge or along the south shore. Unfortunately, the shore is a long distance, so not close enough to walk to. The north ridge has a few amazing trails and some camp sites with good views. The south side is more remote, but views are all fantastic. The north ridges has amenities, but south shore only has a few bathrooms, but no water or electricity. The lake itself is great because they limit sports, so it was pretty easy to kayak and SUP. It’s also 10 minutes to Walmart, so no worries about forgetting anything.
Kenny H — Google review
The park has a variety of trails, suitable for a range of abilities, and some beautiful scenery. Dominated by the lake, I visited the park for one specific reason: to get up close to the thin band of rock that is evidence of the impact of a huge extraterrestrial object, 66 million years ago. Known as the K-Pg (aka K-T) boundary layer, Trinidad Lake State Park is one of a handful of places where this layer, rich in extraterrestrial iridium, can be seen up close and personal. A short drive on an unpaved road followed by a 20 minute stroll along a track, took me to the layer. A single interpretation board, and a bench, mark the spot. After a short scramble up the bank to touch the layer, and some photos, I sat on the bench and considered how different life on Earth would look if the asteroid had missed our planet, all those years ago. As I pondered, a lizard emerged from undergrowth, to bask alongside me on a nearby rock. Perhaps it also wondered...

Helen Hunt Falls, located in North Cheyenne Canon Park, is a small waterfall on Cheyenne Creek that offers a relatively easy hike for families. Named after author Helen Hunt Jackson, the falls are accessible from the parking lot and mark the endpoint of the Columbine trail. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the falls from the moment they step out of their cars and then embark on a .6-mile round trip hike to Silver Cascade Falls for more stunning views of North Cheyenne Canyon.
Beautiful area with stunning views. Super clean, family friendly. Waterfall is so pretty! Great place to walk around and enjoy nature.

This is a beautiful place to stop on the way to some great trails up the road, or make it you starting point. The drama varies greatly depending on the recent rain or spring melt. The best thing is that you literally have a great view from the parking lot. It’s great if you have anyone that has mobility issues since it’s a 30 foot walk from the handicap spaces. The immediate trail to the top is steep, but it’s short and plenty more to explore beyond the falls.

Fun to hike up with beautiful views at the top. My four year old was able to hike up no problem, and my one year old made it almost to the top with little assistance. There is one spot to stop and rest near the top. Some steps were slippery. Bathrooms are available at the falls. The trail is dog-friendly.

🎈One of our faves places while visiting Colorado!! Bring your family here - a handful of parking spaces, serene view, beautiful waterfalls - we also took several photos down the brook, where the parking spaces begin … 🥰 We even saw hummingbirds (I think they were hummingbirds! 🧐) There was another waterfall - a little more ways up the trail but we didn’t get there - the precious ones wanted to go home 🤪 Check out this place when visiting Colorado Springs area .. 🥰 What a gift from Jesus!

Definitely not the big Zoo you see in Larger cities, but still earned a 5 star from me because I absolutely enjoyed myself. Eazy to walk through and plenty of room to play for kids. Would definitely add this to my list of awesome places to explore while getting some much needed exercise.

Pueblo Zoo is an awesome zoo, despite being smaller than Denver Zoo or Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. I went for the "Meet The African Penguins, Behind The Scenes" tour and it was absolutely outstanding. The staff handling the tour were very knowledgeable and friendly. I got to meet Quinn, who is the cuddliest penguin in Colorado, maybe even the whole world. Getting to pet and learn more about such an amazing animal has been the highlight of my year so far. I also got to see how the exhibit is maintained and managed which is also a cool peak inside the amazing effort the zoo takes to keep these animals healthy. I appreciate how the zoo directly supports conservation of endangered species and puts emphasis on ways to help in your every day life. Besides the penguins, the rest of the zoo had a bunch of cool enclosures and exhibits, a lot of great activities for children, and many historical sites from when the zoo was first built in the 1930's. Overall a great experience and I would highly recommend spending some time here. It only takes about 2-3 hours to see everything the zoo has to offer, so its easy to plan an afternoon on a weekend around. Thanks to everyone working here for providing a wonderful experience.

I read that some other reviews said it was small, and I’d have to disagree. It took us about 2 hours to see everything which is quicker than big cities zoos like St. Louis MO, however, it was (in my opinion) the perfect size! Lots of unique animals to see up close, very well taken care of animals, super friendly staff, and plenty of fun experiences. I 100% recommend! Don’t forget to donate to help their conservation efforts as well!

The zoo is a sweet little place to go and spend an afternoon or an late morning adventure. It's not very big and all the paths are sidewalked and ready for strollers or wagons or wheelchairs. The variety of animals is not very big but they have lions and kangaroos and a red panda which are very fun to see. At 3:00 they do a education, talk and feeding of the penguins which was a lot of fun to see. It's a perfect zoo for young kids and families to go. And walk around. Have a picnic lunch and finish the zoo all within a couple of hours. You'll enjoy your time there.

Always have a fun experience here! Usually can see the whole zoo in a couple hours so it's a lot smaller than others. But my kids always love it. Since it's located in a park there are plenty of other fun activities to do if you happen to go through the whole zoo faster than expected. The earlier you get there the less crowded it is.

This is a beautiful zoo. It is a small zoo built in 1935. It is undergoing major renovations and preservations. I think everyone there is doing a great job preserving this amazing operation and protecting & caring for the animals. The gardens are beautiful. The zoo is clean. The animals seem happy. I enjoyed walking around looking at everything. It was a great afternoon.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Colorado Springs, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo stands out as a premier conservation park that is home to over 700 animals. This unique mountain zoo offers visitors an array of interactive experiences, including the chance to feed giraffes and engage with various other species like goats and elephants. With its stunning exhibits such as the Asian Highlands and Rocky Mountain Wild, guests can explore diverse habitats while learning about endangered species conservation efforts.
Every year my sister and I take a trip together, we stop at one zoo per trip and we have visited some very cool zoos (KC zoo is our home zoo). This zoo was so much fun! And has some of the nicest enclosures, we were very excited about this. We LOVE seeing the animals have amazing space to live out their lives. While here the giraffe enclosure was being renovated. There was a baby gorilla. So many elephants and giraffes it was impressive. The hippos were vocal and the penguins come right up to the fence within reach.....but DO NOT touch them! The wallabys are free to roam so close the gates in their area! Loved this zoo

This place is AMAZING!! It's huge! Prepare for lots of walking and hills. Do not come here without pocket money. There are cafes and ice cream and popcorn and you can feed the giraffes so bring enough money for everyone in your group. But you can bring outside food and drinks so be smart. The animals are beautiful and look well cared for. The entire zoo was a clean environment. They even have 2 designated SMOKING AREAS!! like that was great to have a place to smoke. And there's staff everywhere so if you have questions about the animals or something else they're around to help. We had a fantastic day!!

This is a cool zoo. Easy to traverse and handicap accessible however some inclines as to be expected. Under construction during our visit but it didn’t stop us from seeing everything. Spent about 2 hours from start to finish. Love that they do dog days! So fun.

Although under renovation as of November 2025, you can still navigate this zoo without too much disruption. The upgrades will be completed sometime in 2026. The animals look very healthy and have room to move and the natural mountain setting is breathtaking. Anyone not accustomed to the elevation (and even locals) should come prepared with plenty of water for everyone in their party so as to not spoil the fun. The pizza restaurant is great with an enormous oven built in Italy and there are only two in the Western part of the US. If you want to bring your own cooler with lunch, it's allowed and there are multiple areas to set up your picnic. The sky ride up the mountain has an extra cost but it's worth it. There is a nice carousel for the kids for an extra $2. If navigating the mountain is difficult, you can purchase a $3. ticket that is good all day and get picked up and drop off by cart throughout the park. The entrance fee is reasonable so these extra costs are not outrageous. Unless you arrive by a car sharing service, you are required to purchase tickets online in advance because of the limited parking during construction. The Roger's shrine can be accessed by car, but you must get through the gate by 3pm. To see the majority of the park plan on 2-4 hours. Completely worth it! A beautiful retreat.

Super unique and fun zoo, friendly staff, lots to see. They are not kidding when they call this a "mountain zoo" because it's legit all uphill (bring a stroller if you have any kids under 3, because it's a ton of uphill walking and our 2.5 year old couldn't do it all). The layout is a little confusing, likely because of the zoo being on a mountain, you have to backtrack some to get to the next section, but once you figure it out, it's easy enough (use the maps to help). Despite these learning curves, we still had a great time, and our kids did too. Giving 5 stars because we didn't have any issues, just new experiences. Enjoy!!

Listen I know we've all been to the zoo. What could make this one so special right? I'm telling you it's magic. What makes it so enjoyable? - The zoo feels like it's made for the animals. Not for us. No overcrowding of as many different animals as possible into one place with lots of outdoor space and things to do make the animals less stressed. But honestly, it makes for a more enjoyable experience for the visitor as well. - Unique exhibit layout. Ways to experience animals I have frankly never encountered. - Lots of animal interaction opportunities. - Good food. This is a strange one to mention at a zoo but the food was shockingly tasty. - Incredible view. It's not very often that just walking around a zoo is half the beauty. I would come back here again and again. Cannot say enough good things.

The BEST zoo we have been too to date! We LOVED all the animal up close & being able to touch & feed animals. A lot of uphill but totally worth it! They have plenty of benches all over for resting if you get tired easily! Take a rain poncho, backpack, water, snacks. So cool that it is on the mountain. Loved the views. Excited for the new giraffe habitat to get finished to go back & see that! We got to see the new baby gorilla. Baby was definitely the star of the zoo, EVERYONE loved the baby. Too cute. Definitely recommend going to this zoo!

Stuck an amazing environment to bring our girls to! They have had stuck a blast every time we go. Last time the baby wallaby were out and they got to pet them. The staff also let our girls assist them in feeding the reptiles because we were practically the only people in the zoo, so a membership saved us the hassle of waiting in line and scored our 5 girls a once in a lifetime moment contributing to the zoos morning breakfast routine! Such an amazing and unforgettable day!

Historic Arkansas Riverwalk

The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk in Pueblo, Colorado offers a family-friendly experience with various activities and events such as boat rides and concerts. Once a bustling area for Native Americans and frontiersmen, the district surrounding the Arkansas River was revitalized after being devastated by a historic flood in 1921. Today, it is a vibrant mixed-use district featuring dining, shopping, lodging, parks, and green spaces. The Riverwalk hosts community events, festivals, concerts, and more.
Lots of trees, grass and plenty of space to walk. If you are into local history it is a good spot to visit. They offer short boat tours or paddle boats for rent. There is also lots of places to eat that are along the river. If you are visiting Pueblo and want something quick but also nice to do, I recommend doing the river walk.

Wanted a small break on our way to Carlsbad from Denver. Stopped at Angelino's for a pizza and enjoy the fall weather. Not too many shops but the walk was very relaxing. Very dog friendly we were able to take our pup into the patio area for lunch.

Beautifully redesigned by Pueblo. Easy to get to, lots of free parking, a great place to take a stroll, restaurants along the walk, boat rides, public art, and movie in the park.

Water was dingy and gross green. We were there on a.l Saturday evening and expected lots of people and there was hardly anyone even around. Picked a place to go eat and have a drink. Walked in was seated. Waited for about 10 minutes without anyone coming to serve us- so we left and went back to hotel to order in with Door Dash. Would not recommend spending time or money to visit this place to others.
