Canyon de Chelly National Monument, located on the Navajo Nation, is a vast park preserving archaeological resources spanning over 5,000 years of human occupation. Visitors can take tours and enjoy overlooks of ruins and the famous Spider Rock spire. The area is home to Navajo families who engage in livestock raising and farming within the canyons. While exploring the monument, visitors can drive through two scenic routes with multiple pullouts, some of which are wheelchair accessible.
This place is beautiful! We took the bear trail hike, and our guide was awesome! Very knowledgeable and kept us at a good pace. I recommend "Richard!" He was awesome!! Thank You!!

Until this week I didn't even know this National Treasure existed. Needed a place to stay, wanted something new and different so here I am. The first thing that struck me is the absolute friendliness and wonderful Navajo people I've met. Each and every person has been a wonderful host and perfect example of what Americans should be. The Canyon is breathtaking and worth visiting. Yesterday evening we stopped at all the south overlooks, today we went to the north side overlooks. Each and every stop was a treat for this traveling beardedrvtech. I hope my photos do shine justice to the Canyon. This morning I booked a jeep tour with Beauty Way Jeep tours. Our guide Arianna was knowledgeable, sincere and willing to answer our questions. He family owns the property in front of Antelope ruins. We actually had fry bread right where he ancestors act 100s of years ago. I highly recommend you give Canyon de Chelly a visit.

Visited this park as part of a northern Arizona tour my husband and I decided to take. We absolutely loved it! The White House Trail was open, and while challenging, it was completely worth it. Each of the overlooks had a unique view. I saw a few reviews complaining about "panhandlers" at the overlooks, but honestly, everyone was extremely polite, willing to share the local history and their personal stories, and definitely NOT pushy in any way. I felt it added to the experience where I was definitely a visitor in their land. We visited at the end of September, the weather was perfect and the park was not crowded. I differently recommend!
Emily G — Google review
Friendly staff at the visitor center. I recommend driving the saw rim all the way to the end to the vista point then stopping at all view points on the way back. Beautiful views, especially in late afternoon with the sun to the west. It’s also free.
Thierry S — Google review
A cultural treasure. The local guides add to the richness of this incredible place. An overnight stay is well worth the time.
Charles G — Google review
Wow. Super quiet all along the canyon rim. Not crowded in early May, but still a bit of a chilly wind. Spectacular views at pull offs with decent parking situation.
Garret M — Google review
Unbelievably beautiful! Definitely worth exploring but keep a close eye on small children and pets- extremely high cliffs and no barricades in most areas. High winds possible- we froze to death while visiting here in March- dress accordingly.
T J — Google review
One of the most beautiful places I visited while working in the Navajo Nation and touring the southwest USA. Highly recommend doing a Native-led tour IN the canyon, which I ran out of time to do.

Sandstone spire rising from a canyon floor, named for a Navajo legend & with a nearby overlook.
I was able to zoom in on some of the ancient ruins on the canyon walls. Awesome! Also, yell into the canyon and listen to it talk back to you. Magical!

Located within the Canyon De Chelly, you find this iconic landmark. A beautiful formation that would certainly impress you and which is worth visiting. Located about 20 minutes driving from the welcome center, this is the preferred overlook that visitors usually choose to visit. There is a pathway that allows you to have different perspectives of the Rock. Entrance is free, no restrooms available.

Amazing!! Extremely beautiful sight. Well worth the drive! Must see. Trail easy to walk and navigate.

We found this place almost by accident (we saw a photo in Chinle while on our way to Monument Valley) and decided to take a detour to go and look at it). A big WOW! when we reached the viewpoint. Definitely worth it.
Nico P — Google review
Spider Rock located in Arizona, USA, is peculiar since it differs from the surrounding rock formations. There is a place called Spider Rock overlook where hundreds of pictures of the Spider Rock were taken. Local Navajo have tours to visit the Spider Rock base. A beautiful experience.
Abd H — Google review
The last stop on the south rim drive! Unless you wanna take the dirt road to the fortress. Amazing views . And a somewhat accesable Vista point with the option to walk further past the paved area
Megan ( — Google review
The view from the photo was very cloudy and post fall front with ice pellets in October. Tremendous view that I recommend highly on your bucket list. We came back for an awesome sunrise. Also Chinle was a very warm and friendly town.

I've been in the Navajo Nation not quite 5 years. This was the only overview I had not visited. It finally opened near the first of September. The views were amazing. The trail down to the floor of the canyon was amazing. It's fairly safe, but care needs to be taken with younger children. Rest areas are frequent, but no water is available. Being your camera, photo opportunities abound truly great overview that I am glad I finally got to see
PHIL S — Google review
I had a beautiful hike down to White House Ruins. Stunning views and scenery. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. It is a rugged trail. You descend 600 feet and climb back out.
Stewart C — Google review
I can’t find out why this overlook is closed. The visitors center staff told me that the site needs repair but the site is in excellent condition (strange). In the past, it was the only trail that allowed visitors to enter the canyon without a guide. Currently (March ‘22 ) no one can enter canyon without a guide. Maybe closing this “Overlook” was a plan to employ more guides? DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING VALUABLE IN YOUR CAR AT ANY OVERLOOK, lots of theft from vehicles.
Freeman B — Google review
This overlook has a great view of the major prehistoric ruins in the National Monument. Be sure to visit this overlook (although all the overlooks are great). An evening visit is cooler and the angling shadows are intriguing. There is a public access trail (the only one) down to the canyon floor from this overlook. It's 1 and 1/2 miles, a short hike down but a long hike back up. I suspect it's a challenge on a hot day - we didn't try it). In talking with an older Navajo lady selling souvenirs down in the canyon, I learned that she hiked this trail every day. Something to consider when deciding whether or not to purchase one of her small pots.
George W — Google review
The only trail allowed down into the canyon and its worth the hike. Very beautiful. We did it in the morning around 9 am and it got hot on the way up so Id recommend to go early. Took about 2 hours for hike and seeing the ruins. 500-600 foot descent with nice gradual switchbacks. Also has benches along the way if you need a rest. Bring water. There is none there but there are portapotties at the ruin. One confusing point is at the bottom you follow the canyon road west. If you start going east you will see a sign saying you can go no further without a guide. Just go the other way.
Jason P — Google review
If possible, do the trail down to the ruins. It is a nice grade and a marvel of small scale human engineering. You pass through two tunnels to descend to the bottom. The valley floor is amazing. The ruins are spectacular up close.
Matheson H — Google review
Such an awesome hike down the canyon. The sign is pretty accurate for how long it takes to do. The views are immaculate. If you decide to go in the summer like we did, make sure you pack at least half a gallon of water per person.
Samuel O — Google review
Great views from the overlook. There's clearly marked trail here to get down to the ruins. I believe this is the only trail you can take on your own, without a guide, you're on Navajo land here. Always take plenty of water with you.

We came as the church was being decorated for advent. The church itself feels much like you are home in the faith, even as we had never been there. pls visit, then have a nice hike around the property. Do not forget the meeting hall and meditation area which is behind the church.
Mickey I — Google review
Had a wonderful time visiting this Catholic Mission On the Havajo Nation Reservation. Church and ancillary building including a chapel and school and Rectory were all made from hand by Native Navajos who had the rock hauled to the building site from a long distance. Staff were wonderfully accommodating and friendly, giving us an impromptu tour! Have been invited to return to tour the school once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
Kerry C — Google review
This is an evil cult that will send people to hell! I talked to a lady and a young man who were living in fear of going to hell because of this "church" telling them they were going to hell and couldn't change that, thank God one of them believed only in Jesus Christ. Don't go here if you actually care about what the Bible says. Faith in Jesus is the only way to heaven.
Alex L — Google review
Went there this summer during the Navajo Nation Fair. I took lots of photos i will post here. The Franciscans founded the mission in 1898 at the invitation of Reverend Mother (now saint, canonized in 2000) Katharine Mary Drexel, who donated the site and had plans to establish a convent and a school for Indian children there. The original adobe mission and its historic interior have been preserved as a museum, interpreting missionary life and reservation life at the turn of the century. The museum is an introduction to early missionary life Franciscan Friars bringing Roman Catholic teachings to the Navajo people beginning in the 1890s.

There is a nice hiking trail that starts off across from the church. Also a small "museum" or oldest building that you can check out for free that is across the road too.

This was such a nice place to stop by on our cross country trip. The people inside were very accommodating and pleasant. I eneded up purchasing a really amazing knife with mammoth bone on it that was enhanced by local craftsmen.
Will F — Google review
Hot inside but lots of fun and interesting, unique hand crafted items to look at, keeping your mind off how hot it is inside. Prices are comparable to nearby competitors and they sell a good variety of Minnetonka moccasins. The view of the mountains from the parking lot is mesmerizing.
Ellery H — Google review
Cool and nice resting spot if you passing by and check some gift shop with Native American artifacts!
Nemanja Z — Google review
I lived next next door to the Teepee Trading post for a couple of years! (and also know the family) I just went revisited 7-11-2025 and was very lucky to go inside and find it just like it was when I was in 7th grade in 1983 and found my great friend Daryl... whom took me to the top of the Lupton mountain.
Timothy T — Google review
A great place to buy souvenirs for family and friends. Large selection, normal prices, very interesting exhibits. I went there for the second time. The first time I asked for a discount, they didn't give it to me, but the second time they gave me a 10% discount. I recommend visiting. There is a very beautiful cliff nearby).

AUsome Iconic stop! Cute items for sale at decent prices... Same things for sale at almost all gift shops in AZ, this place is the cheapest overall.

It's just another roadside tourist trap. Authentic Indian goods made in China. You have to purchase an item for your 3 year old to use the restroom.

Rustic, still-active post dating from 1878 & featuring Navajo crafts, snacks & guided tours.
I had the most rewarding visit with the park ranger. He was happy to share his knowledge of the tradiing post and the Navajo culture and history. He even gave me a personal tour of the residence, which I really appreciated. This is a special historic place.

Hidden gem. My kids and I loved this place. Junior ranger activities to earn a badge. Fun hands on activities in the center. Lots of history to learn in the post. Art to see in the tour of the house. Fun general store to buy souvenirs with authentic Navajo art and rugs.
Curious S — Google review
What an amazing and historic location. I was amazed to find out it’s still a fully operational trading post as it was 100+ years ago. The Navajo artifacts were just breathtaking! I was able to find the perfect opal ring! Well worth the drive!
Leticia R — Google review
We stopped at the Trading Post for a rest stop and to look through the Visitor Center and gift shop. The restroom ms were very clean. The Visitor Center was interesting and informative. The gift shop/store was also interesting with a variety of souvenirs and gifts. I bought some magnets and handmade soaps.

A must see especially if you are a history buff. Very original structures. Ranger will give you a tour of the house and you can guide yourself thru the store, barn, and grounds. Beautiful Navajo items like baskets, jewelry and blankets for purchase.

Very nice place. The display cases were very well arranged and attractive! The prices were half off when we were there and my wife said the prices were lower than she would expect! And I walked around looking at their products and the staff let me look without harassing like some places! I included some pictures of the store and the view from the front door. Highly recommended!

Convenient in and out. I've definitely had better Navajo tacos but not bad and a fun option to McDonald's. Soft serve is small but good. They wouldn't allow photos inside for this review but there seemed to be a nice variety. Really clean restrooms. 40W on route to Flagstaff.
K M — Google review
We were just passersby and we checked this place out for souvenir. They have an array of hand crafted jewelries and potteries. You can buy merchandise for a love one here as a gift from your trip.
Salted C — Google review
Stopped in on our travels back to AZ. You see these American (native) Indian stores all along I40 as you travel through the Navajo nation. We finally decided to stop. This store (Indian City) looks like a new building. Upscale look and features a ton of Indian products and AZ memorabilia. Some great prices on Indian blankets etc. They actually do have $0.99 tacos and a $0.99 ice cream cone. Tacos are a bit of meat, beans and cheese. Tasty and decent size for 99 cents! Check out this shop. It’s clean, new, and nice inside.
Mike R — Google review
This place is absolutely beautiful inside. This place would be a great place to take kids. They offer a little bit of everything from souvenirs to food. All authentic and most handmade. I will come back here for sure next time we are driving by.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Painted Desert Inn is a storied Pueblo Revival–style adobe inn that has been transformed into a museum, featuring Hopi murals and a seasonal ice cream parlor. Originally dating back to the 1920s, the inn has undergone various updates by notable architects and artists over the years. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, it now offers exhibits on Petrified Forest history and serves as a National Treasure according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Painted Desert Inn was a highlight of our visit—not just for the views, but for the incredibly kind service we received. We arrived just after the 3 PM ice cream cutoff, but the gentleman working there was so generous and still served our whole family. It made our day, especially in the heat! The views from the inn are absolutely stunning, with sweeping panoramas of the Painted Desert that you can enjoy right from the shaded patio. While we didn’t end up doing the nearby trail due to the high temperatures, the stop was still well worth it for the scenery, hospitality, and chance to cool down with a treat.
BradandJen M — Google review
Great stopping point in the planted desert / petrified forest. The in has art, history, maps, small Cafe, gift shop, and paths to beautiful vista's. It is very clean, well staffed and beautifully kept. Good as a cool place to stop to get out of the sun for a break. Plenty of parking, and photogenic views all the way around. Don't miss looking up in the gift shop. The ceiling is glass panels of native designs. Stunning.
Steve — Google review
Very unique inn built of petrified wood with a layer removed near the doors that shows the exposed petrified wood frame. Fascinating piece of history. Really enjoyed this stop and the view
Toby P — Google review
Gorgeous views from overlook areas. Nice gift shop with viewing windows from inside. Ice cream counter for snacks. Ranger talks available. Nice park!
Tracy C — Google review
Loved how the inn is put together - from the wood beams to the decorative lamps and ceiling tiles. The views from the overlook are grand as well.
Jeff H — Google review
This is a nice historical stop from the 1930s. The national park passport station is inside along with a snack bar down stairs. Clean bathrooms and a few tables around back. There's a short trail outback that goes to a scenic overlook you don't want to miss.
Cordell W — Google review
Serve as visitor center right now, it's construction style and rock red color will deeply impress you, especially at sunset.

The Painted Desert Visitor Center is the gateway to the stunning 146-square-mile expanse of colorful badlands and mesas, showcasing a dreamscape of pastel hues spread across eroded hills. The area features eight overlooks offering breathtaking views of the southern edge, where vivid colors are created by mineral-rich soils deposited over different geologic periods.
Visited in May 2024. A truly Amazing experience from beginning to end. Entered from the North off Interstate 40 and exited from the South near Holbrook. The next time I visit, I'd go from south to north to capture the brilliant deeper shades of red in the Painted Desert during the late afternoon.
Rick W — Google review
This is the coolest place. I came with my parents when I was a kid and have finally made it back. I brought my own kids back and my mom. The park is a driving tour. You start at the visitor entrance with a map. The road passes by all the different areas. You can choose which or all to stop at. I really enjoyed the giant petrified logs. I was able to walk up and touch them. The colors are gorgeous. Some of the spots are great Lookout points over the valley. It takes about an hour to drive through. Maybe longer depending on how long you stay at each spot. When you reach the end you will have to turn and go back to the entrance or you can leave the southern exit. We were traveling to the south anyway and it worked out perfectly. Take lots of water with you and pack a lunch. It was very hot when we visited. Be prepared. There are no stores. Don't take any rocks. There's a sign warning of being searched and there are plenty of rocks outside the park.
Bonnie F — Google review
Seems like Painted Desert VC needs a remodel. Plenty of building sq ft available. Very small considering all the buildings within the complex. The Rainbow VC at the south end of the park is nicer and more updated facility.
Mike E — Google review
Small, but free. There was another building with a movie that was kind of boring. It was all about made up Science stuff saying how old everything is...blah, blah, blah.
Smelling R — Google review
Not as nice as the other national parks. We bought 2 stickers, didn’t meed receipt, went outside and decided we didn’t want the stickers, walked back in and cashier said we needed receipt. Dumb customer service move.
Dave B — Google review
I purchased some beautiful survivors, Great advice, maps, and brochures Rangers were more than helpful, they were courteous, friendly and jovial. I even got a military discount. Sweet. A very good all in one place to stop and shop and refresh before your desert trek.
Steve — Google review
Plan on several hours if you hike. Drive though took about an hour but we mainly drove though as was getting late. Very impressive and for the price I would recommend.
Les U — Google review
I liked the petrified forest because it lead to the painted desert and the crystallized forest. Cool drive along the desert as well. The painted desert was an awesome view. We went in January. Kinda was hoping to see crazy bright colors in that spot. So not sure if there would be a better season to visit it in to see it a bit more vibrant?? But either way, the views cool and more views down the way with different colors are ther for you to enjoy as well

Hiking Trails
Blue Mesa in Petrified Forest National Park offers circular hikes that lead to flat-topped hills with rock layers in various shades of blue, gray, and purple. The area is home to a diverse range of plants and animals, including amphibians, birds, insects, spiders, mammals, and reptiles. The mesa's dominant hues include white, gray, red, and brown with hints of blue mixed in. The landscape features melting-like formations creating canyons and piles of stony soil.
Words can't describe what we experienced. This area is just breathtaking ...... We enjoyed the hike. Carry plenty of water as it is very hot during the summer months.

If you are going to do one hike in park do this one. Especially if you have never had chance to visit badlands national park. Mini version of badlands. Also cool to see if you can’t make the hike worth driving down this loop road just to get out and see at overlook.

Blue Mesa is well worth the short drive/detour off the main road through Painted Desert, and the short hike around the well paved trail an absolutely fabulous way to spend 30-45 minutes. The colours of the mesas are subtle but beautiful, and the area strewn with lovely petrified wood. Overall, one of the highlights of the Painted Desert.
Gary C — Google review
It's a short but occasionally strenuous trek through the gouged-out beauty of the Blue Mesa. Which actually isn't all that blue. The dominant hues are white, gray, red and brown, with a little blue mixed in here and there. The sides of the mesa seem to be melting away, creating canyons and enormous piles of stoney soil. The tableau you see looks like a snapshot of scoops of ice cream melting.

Newspaper Rock is a remarkable site featuring petroglyphs that can be observed from an overlook using free binoculars and telescopes. The petroglyphs, created by unknown artists thousands of years ago, offer a fascinating glimpse into ancient history. These detailed historical artworks are definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in the mysteries of the past.
Couldn't find it first. Make sure you look straight down (below the binocolars) at the rock (its head/front).

First to find this I believe. 😃

Really cool rock(s) with hieroglyphics
Kevin W — Google review
It's an overlook, you have to use the binocular stand (forgot what it's called) to look at them, but it's pretty cool and the views overall are wonderful
Brandy — Google review
There are a handful of places where I have been that magically transports you through time, and Newspaper Rock is one of them. It is almost the ones who created the petroglyphs just stepped away. I also learned that a petroglyph is an image carved, incised or scratched into stone. A pictograph is a painting on stone, using natural pigments. Utah has both of these. Definitely worth a visit to see these detailed historical artwork left so many years ago. Please do not add your own artwork, graffiti is a constant threat to this monument!
BRIAN L — Google review
I went to this place when I was 11 years old. I remember being in awe of what I was looking at...and learning that they're thousands of years old, and their creators are unknown. You wonder what all those petroglyphs meant to who created them..if you're in the Petrified forest area..it's worth the stop.

Jasper Forest is a must-see stop in Petrified Forest National Park. Here, you'll find an impressive concentration of petrified wood, with logs that include petrified roots and even a natural agate bridge formed by a petrified log at the Agate Bridge stop. The Blue Mesa area nearby showcases pieces of petrified wood forming capstones over easily eroded clay soils.
Wonderful little viewpoint. Right where and when you park there’s a little platform to walk out and views these multi colored hills. Lovely for the eyes. Worth viewing if you’re driving through.

Easy parking even with a bigger rig. Highway in is well maintained but uneven and can’t safely be driven at higher speed, so allow for the time in and out of the park. Great sidewalks and railings. Views are unique, and expansive. While there the larger, better visible specimens are just off of the back side of the parking lot and you can walk down to those, get great photos and close enough to touch. Some of the bigger specimens are as you approach on the road in as well, they are easy to spot once you know what to look for. This is a worthwhile stop, off of old Route 66. Allow at least 2-3 hours to drive the majority of the park, as the Jasper Forest is only one of the many points of interest in the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest National Park
Travis S — Google review
Mid-March 2025 - This was one of our favorite stops in the park. The amount of petrified wood in the Jasper Forest is staggering as are all of the "chips" that lay scattered about. While the view from the overlook is grand, we were especially delighted to follow the trail (off the right hand side of the overlook) down into the valley floor. This is a relatively easy walk/hike. Just be sure to have plenty of water, especially if your dog is walking with you. They wander around and take it all in. We were fortunate to do this stop on two different days and at different times of the day, which made different features stand out.

TL;DR: Jasper Forest Vista in Petrified Forest National Park offers otherworldly views, ample parking, and plenty of space to soak it all in. Jasper Forest Vista is an incredible stop in Petrified Forest National Park. The views are absolutely breathtaking, with a surreal landscape that feels like stepping into another world. There’s ample parking and plenty of room to explore or simply stand and take in the scenery. It’s a must-see stop if you’re visiting the park!
Kellina P — Google review
A great park to visit and you could catch a clear glimpse of the color and crystal structure. You can have a small hike around the site. If you are lucky, might catch a sight of American pronghorn at the forest too.

A great area for self-exploring. We spent a couple of hours in this amazing area. It was not crowded at all as this section of the park is lesser known.

Such an underrated national park. My jaw dropped when we first turned off of I-40 because you had no idea what kind of views were right there! Definitely well worth the stop and incredible to see overall! Lots of trails to hike and so much to see! You will be amazed at what all is sitting out in the desert, and will be surprised at its history. Such an amazing experience I will not forget!

Crystal Forest is a captivating stop in the Petrified Forest National Park, known for its stunning amethyst and quartz crystals that were once nestled within petrified logs. The .75-mile loop trail offers an enchanting stroll past these ancient logs, which are now protected due to concerns about crystal removal. Visitors are left spellbound by the sheer beauty of this radiant gem, with its mesmerizing colors and close-up encounters with the petrified trees.
This walk was amazing! I found that it was probably my 2 favorite place in petrified national forest park. It had some of the coolest logs that turned into the rocks. Some were just so perfect you’ll see in the pictures. There was some that just left in perfect condition, little stumps, a full tree that was broken down but laid across the ground so perfectly, different colors, and all sorts of shapes and sizes. There were also some cool colored hills here too for viewing. Around the trail you’ll find many much information about the land a long time ago and how it came and the rocks and such, very interesting! Love the rock/logs so much. Quite a bit of parking but I could imagine this place fills up quickly in the busy season. I went in January and not to many people or crowds. The walk itself for the full loop is about a 1.5/2 miles. Very short and easy. Take your time and look at all the neat rock/logs there are so many unique ones to see of all different shapes and sizes! Makes for beautiful pictures!

Crystal Forest: More than just a gift shop! At the gate to Petrified Forrest National Park lays 2 nearly identical gift shops at either side of the road. Owned by locals, it was a unique experience. We stayed here in August on a family cross country RV trip. I was in a 25ft RV, and this was the third major stop on my 17 day adventure. I booked a site here through Harvest Hosts (check it out, well worth the subscription fee). Unique to this host was 30 amp electric hookups, and with my generator working when it wanted to, this was a must for my stay. There is a charge for the power which they request paid in cash (or credit) at the gift shop. We did plan on a late check in (as our previous stop was at Carlsbad Caverns- but connected with staff to keep them updated and they were very helpful. The sites were nicely sized, all back ins. They are about 20 miles off from the closest major town. There are no food options nearby ( other than that fore mentioned town). We did a one night stay, and were able to access directly to the park gate when they opened. The shop has a variety of local items including carvings, blankets, hats, worked stone that is unique to the area. There are no water or sewage dumps on site, but, there's no place to stay closer to the park then this location. Staff were friendly, and at night, the skies were so clear you could see the outline of the Milky Way. Worth a stay or a visit if you're in the area. Note: the state highway that leads to this location... In parts is very rough, and if you are traveling in a larger vehicle- be advised to go under the speed limit. The roads are very dark at night with limited nearby assistance. It was rare we even saw another car on the road. Additionally, there are scorpions, tarantulas, and various snakes local to the area. Be aware of warm places and where you are stepping.

Nice place for a quick hike, lots of petrified wood and different colors and layers of rocks. Paved loop walkway. Has some height so you get some good views of the surrounding area.

This place was amazing! A girlfriend and I took a holiday to visit an old friend from H.S. @ her new place in Phoenix and say this place on the map at random. Thinking… why not check it out. It turns out the park closes around 7? And we arrived w about an hour & 1/2… man… we could have explored for at least 4-6hrs for sure. If you’re in the area it’s a must see!

DoBell Mineral & Excavations @ The DoBell Ranch is the only legal place in Arizona to excavate/purchase genuine Arizona fossilized wood. Visitors are greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff who provide guidance on the best places to dig. The ranch offers beautiful petrified wood at reasonable prices, and visitors can either dig their own or find a unique piece on the land.
If you are anywhere near here (or far… we drove 9 hours to do this) I highly recommend it! You get to dig for as long as you want for your own petrified wood, and whatever you find, you will be the first human being to ever see that rock!!! Noah is super cool and knowledgeable. Just message that you are coming in Facebook and prepare to find so many cool pieces!

We had such a good time! It was tiring but also fun to dig for our own petrified rocks. Do expect to get dusty, bring water to hydrate. Rhonda guided us to an area that was recently excavated and showed us some techniques and what to look for. We called in advance to coordinate what time we were going there, her number is on her Facebook page.

Noah, the owner of the ranch was super chill. He is extremely skilled and knows so much about his field. His ability to create what he does with the petrified wood is everything you could hope for. Never a disappointment ! He knows his stuff. Great job! Rainbow wood , agate wood , there is all kinds of every color so bright so beautiful

I visited Noah a couple of times over the last few days. He makes it easy to do hands on digging for petrified wood. He had some nice holes started, and showed me some good places to begin. I ended up with a bunch. He even cut and polished one for me. Worked on it until almost midnight, just so I could head home with it. And, to top it off, his prices are great.

We were with Rhonda Dobell on the ranch in September this year. She and her granddaughter showed us around and we chose to hunt amongst their plentiful supply of already dug petrified wood. To say we enjoyed ourselves would be an understatement. There were four in our group and three had bucketfuls of pet wood. I, on the other hand, wanted a BIG piece that was delivered to our home today. This wasn't our first hunt at Dobell's. We had previously dealt with Noah three or four times. Much to our disappointment, it ended after he failed to complete our final transaction, kept our deposit and didn't deliver the goods. We weren't giving up on Dobell's though. I had read numerous positive reviews on hunts with Rhonda and we scheduled with her this time. Rhonda knows her business, was very informative, gracious and even helping to find certain colors or types of the pet wood we each looked for. I believe it was Hailey that took me on a tour of the bigger logs or partial petrified trees. There were numerous ones to choose from and finally my eyes came upon one they referred to as The Burl. It pulled me in and I could picture it in our yard. Today was delivery day and I couldn't be more pleased. Rhonda, Frank and their son went out of their way helping us to find transportation and heavy equipment to move the rock once here, two states away. Delivery and setup went wonderfully. I have no complaints, only praise, and will continue to only hunt with Rhonda from now on. She's a woman of her word and a pleasure to hunt with. Thank you Rhonda!

We went to Holbrook to see the Petrified Forest but it was closed due to the government shutdown. We were looking for a place to see petrified wood and found DoBell. We had SO much fun digging for our own petrified wood and we even mailed some home because we couldn't narrow it down our picks. If you're looking for a unique souvenir, don't hesitate to go here. Noah was fantastic and our girls (ages 6 and 9) said it was one of the highlights of our trip! Don't be deterred about driving back on the approx. 3 mile lane after you leave the main road, it's worth the drive!

A lot of fun getting to dig for your own rocks and petrified wood. Rhonda was very nice and accommodating for us on our trip. You can dig or you can look through pieces that have already been dug. You pay per bucket so you can fill it as much as you want. Highly recommend

I’m ADD so I was pretty overwhelmed with the selection and variety. Took me a bit to find what I was looking for and such but was fun looking. Prices are a tad higher than online but fair. Plus obviously you get to look at what you are buying. This place has an amazing selection! Only one guy was working but he was super nice and helpful. It was fairly busy so some more help would have been nice. Can’t wait to stop back by now that I know about this place. Kind of surprised I never noticed it before. Your billboards work wonders BTW!

My friend told me about this place a few years ago and I was driving to the Petrified National Park and stopped by. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. The matriarch of the family helped me and let me tell you, she knows about knives and is very skilled at using it when she demonstrated on a knife I was looking at. The store had large display cabinets with a variety of knives to choose from, even the kinds that certain states ban, CA. The staff know which ones you are allowed in those states so ask before you buy and possibly get into trouble hahaha 🤣. I really like my new Benchmade.

Best knife shop in the on this side of the country - no exaggeration whatsoever. I live 8 hours away, in southern California, where we have everything - and there is nothing like this anywhere west of here. They are the authorized dealer for pretty much EVERY knife brand. They have just about everything. Every knife that you've only seen on the Internet - they probably still have it, plus a lot of new in the box knives that the manufacturer doesn't make anymore. This is a family ran business who lives knives, it's fun just talking knives with them, they get it.
David C — Google review
Biggest selection of knives I've ever seen. For the ladies, a small case of silver jewelry. Also, some cookware (staube) and kirltchen knives and accessories. No public restroom.

Very big and clean store, all products are presented nicely under glass display. So many choice of knives and brands. You can easily spend 1hr there just looking. Also, plenty of local gifts to choose from. Mother road 66 sign, cup, cap, shirt. Petrified polished rocks. Don't miss on the parking lot in the back an old 60's car and 2 giants advertising knives.
Philippe P — Google review
Insanely overpriced $200 for a 30 piece generic lock pick set $150 for a 15 piece generic lock pick set.. locally made knives price that will never sell. Will negotiate absolutely not. If you’re traveling, just keep traveling you can find the same knives and Lock picks for a quarter of the price.. ridiculous. Never return here ever.

The Petrified Forest Gift Shop offers visitors the chance to take home a piece of petrified wood legally acquired from private lands. Run by members of the Navajo tribe, the shop has friendly staff and a nice selection of items. While prices for general petrified wood are reasonable, polished pieces are quite inflated. The shop also offers RV parking with electrical hookups and boasts incredibly dark skies for stargazing and astrophotography enthusiasts.
Camped here with hookups for $20 bucks, they have free camping if you don’t need electricity. The store owner was very nice and the shop had lots of souvenirs.

This is a quaint shop as you enter the park! I appreciated the diverse deals around the store. I was able to purchase a geode bookend set at 50% off for my younger sister, which I'm sure she'll love! My only complaint was that there was a series of nails sticking out of a shelf around thigh-level, resulting in a small tear of my favorite pants 😩.

This was a fun shop to poke around in after leaving the Petrified Forest. There are tons of things in there ranging from different types of petrified wood (claiming to be collected from legal sites not within the PF) to fossils to minerals and to even some Native American souvenirs. We felt that lots of stuff in here was overpriced, especially the petrified wood and fossils, but the minerals and Native American souvenirs were decently priced for the most part. We did buy a few small things for future Christmas gifts, and the shop owner was nice. We especially liked the goofy setup outside with the cars trying to haul off giant chunks of petrified wood.

A very interesting little museum (free of entrance, too!). The old courtroom and county jail are a jump back in time, and the lady at the desk was very nice and helped us plan our next stops. It is a nice history of the town and surrounding area, and there is a LOT to read there for people into it, which could easily take up an entire afternoon!

There are so many different options and at the very least, it has a very cool museum with lots of collectibles, artifacts, fossils, etc that aren’t even for sale. I was so impressed with this place that I came back a second time with a friend who uses rocks and minerals for healing. We overheard people talking about how much they overpaid at the previous place they stopped by. They couldn’t get over how good these prices were. I happen to agree. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and it was such a pleasure buying from this store. Definitely worth a stop by if you are in the area. Not too far from Petrified Forest National Park.

Free adventure!! Look no further, Little Painted Dessert is as beautiful as its name. Unreal!! Serene and mesmerizing hidden gem. Driving distance is approximately 25 minutes North of Winslow, off of route 66!! Best time to visit this beautiful place is during daylight. We were there mid February mid day and temperature was very comfortable. No coats required. Definitely use google map for directions. Not a whole lot of signs to guide you to the location and when you turn onto the hidden side road. The short distance to the little painted desert is rough with Lots and BIG pot holes.. Drive slow. Not too many rails and you can park the car right up to the cliff. The depth perception in the pictures does not do its justice. Do not let the hills fool you into thinking is a small area.. if you dare to walk on the historic ground, you are a little ant on the smallest bump of the hill!! Be careful climbing up and down the steep path. But you will not be disappointed if you do explore. There are no shades and not a lot of visitors and no vendors to sell food or drinks.. Be sure to pack some liquid, food and snacks. We explored the diffent sizes of the hills and found interesting objects.. apart from the different colours of gravel, we also found petrified wood!! They were heavy!! We took our time to explore the area and zero worries of other people being in the background of our picture as we were the only couple there!! Time spent there various depending how much you want to learn and explore. The 2 hours spent there flew by for us. Overall, amazing and interesting place!! Love it.

Don't miss this outstanding area. Words can't describe what is expecting you. I've seen so many bandlands during the last couple of years but this is by far the most spectacular scenery I've ever seen.

Absolutely beautiful. We stopped on our drive from Roswell going to Las Vegas and it was definitely worth it. Cloudy when we got there but the colors are still amazing and vibrant. My photos I didn't use any filters but I did adjust the shutter speed and ISO setting

No signage, so you need to know where you're going beforehand! A hidden gem. Gorgeous views of the Painted Desert (better than at the NP, imo). The roads are rough and not kept up, but it's highly worth the visit. Far fewer people than at the national park. Free to enter.
Jenny B — Google review
It’s really too bad this has been abandoned, because it has absolutely incredible views. Unfortunately, it is only a matter of time before the road falls into such disrepair that it becomes impassable and the natural beauty is destroyed by locals using it as a dump site. Very sad, since it’s one of the most breathtaking sights in the area.
Be C — Google review
This is a colorful, beautiful area of Arizona rich with history that is a must see. The area has been left to the elements to decay. The "road" is sketchy but my family sedan made it fine. We went around 530PM and were rewarded with beautiful colors, we also went the next morning but the colors didn't show up.
Paul T — Google review
Beautiful scenery! Standing on the edge and looking out may make you want to climb down inside the area and look around in more detail; there were railroad ties made into stairs at one time but they are eroded and not usable currently.
Kevin B — Google review
The Little Painted Desert is a hidden treasure on Arizona 87 near mile marker 360 west of the highway. The road is unmarked, so slow down approaching mile marker 360. Be cautious, as this jem is no longer preserved by any Parks Department and the Rim Road is rough so DRIVE SLOW. This is on private land on Navjo Nation, so please show respect. There are no restrooms here. Picnic areas are no longer kept up. 20 minutes north of Winslow is well worth the trip for an amazing view.

A favorite stop during trips along the I-40. Brings back great memories of family vacations on Route 66. Not fancy, not high tech. Actually a wonderful glimpse of how auto travel used to be and just how nice it can be to stop and see something different. Customer service on my recent stop was (again) friendly and personable. I admit the place is colored by my past memories and some might not see it in the same way. But for families or individuals who still have a little "kid" in their heart, it's a nice respite along the roadway.

This is an old survivor of Route 66 and still being run by the same family. Tony and Cindy are friendly and ready to answer questions. Great place to pick up all sorts of souvenirs of your trip. Also have some great photo ops with the Here It Is sign and the big Jack Rabbit you can climb on for a pic. And don’t forget to get your personalized mini mileage sign to take home.
Charles C — Google review
Major shout out to jackrabbit trading post. This is definitely a fun little spot to stop at if you’re on the road there were definitely a lot of cool souvenirs memorabilia shirts, hoodie, shock glasses, rocks, just about everything you could think of and it is a very cool little mom and Pop run business. The current owners bought it from their in-laws, which is pretty cool to see it survive through the generations, my only critique and reason why I gave four stars instead of five is when everything was rang up I asked for a military discount and I was told because everything was rang up. You couldn’t get a military discount you had to ask before it was rang up. I didn’t know that and this is typically not the norm typically you get rang up and then you asked for the military discount and then you pay other than that it was a very good experience and I highly recommend checking it out

A must-stop spot for your Route 66 roadtrip. Lots of great souvenirs inside, including petrified wood, jewelry, and t-shirts, but the best part is the historic room inside the gift shop, absolutely filled to the brim with antiques and historic memorabilia. Be sure to sign in to the visitors log/guest book. And of course don’t forget to take a picture riding the big Jack Rabbit out front.

Cute museum that was the perfect size for a 20min visit with our 3 and 5yr old. The worker was very informative and friendly!
Kayla R — Google review
It had a lot of interesting things and the tour guide was nice. I just wish more of the houses had been open and that our tour guide knew a bit more. But for a free small town museum it was interesting.
Adaynasmile — Google review
This museum is run by volunteers so it may be advantageous to call and set an appointment before you visit. The museum is extremely personal and hands-on. Sharla Flake was our museum guide and she knew the history of the people who settled Snow Flake and the stories of many of their descendants. Our tour started in a house made from two original adobe houses where we loved the schoolroom upstairs. It continued with a log cabin that was dismantled in Beaver, Utah, carried about 500 miles by wagons, then rebuilt in Snow Flake. The final part of the tour is a three storey mansion (although they did not consider it as such) built in 1895 for the James Flake family who had over a dozen children. All three buildings are filled with original period furniture, belongings, photos and paintings. Our entire group loved this tour! Highest recommendation.

We just got back from our tour of Rock Art Ranch and all I can say is that it was fabulous! Grandpa and his granddaughter are just wonderfully fun, knowledgeable and professional people. The scenery is gorgeous and the history spellbinding. We highly recommend this tour for everyone. Can’t wait to come back with some more friends 💕👍
Catherine C — Google review
Brantley, the 87 year old owner, and his daughter, a former teacher, gave the tour personally. We were first shown artifacts hat had been found around the ranch. Then we were taken on a very in depth tour of the ranch's archeological sites. Then we were shown the canyon and given as much time as we wanted to explore with a "call us when the last one of you leaves so we can lock up". Brantley and his family have so much passion for the land, preserving the artifacts, and history of the indigenous people who once lived or passed through there. Be advised that while there is an overlook with seats and picnic tables, getting into the canyon is not the most accessible. The stairs are rock stairs and are steep in places. Also, you must call to book a reservation for the tour. They do one a day and they do not take walk-ins, as the canyon is a decent drive from the parking area. The road leading to the ranch is dirt and gravel. The roads to the various sites are mostly dirt. We had a fwd Pacifica and wished we had taken our suv. A car may struggle. However the canyon is beautiful and we would go back on our next trip out here.

A family operation, Rock Art Ranch is well worth the time and entrance fee. Great photos, stories, displays and, of course, petroglyphs and pictograms.
Steve E — Google review
If you want to see petroglyphs up close, this is the place. Must reserve in advance. Total time is around 4 hours for visit to barn, museum, ancient Pueblo sites and petroglyphs. Take lunch, liquids and snacks. Wear sturdy shoes for walk on sandy boulders.

What a hidden gem. Wonderful family run ranch and museum with a long personal history and a love of the ancient history and people of the land they live on. A friend and I just went last week and were fortunate to get a very personal tour. A huge thank you to the Baird family who care for the land and its history and are willing to share it. It is very remote but also accessible even in my prius. Plan to spend most of the day for this trip even if you are already in the area!
Hugh I — Google review
If you are interested in the old west and historical ancient ruins and petroglyphs this is your place. This is in a private ranch. The current owner has been here since he was a child. (70ish years) One if the universities have done several archeological digs for ruins. The owner placed a cover building to protect the open dig site. There is a small museum with old ranching items and small bunk house. Some amazing pottery discovered from the land. A small area where a Navajo family lived for many years. This family still maintains the Hogan house. The main event is the petroglyphs in the canyon. A set of steep stairs of rock and metal get you down into the canyon. A couple of bridges help cross the creek. There are so many to see. Some that may be so old that the desert varnish has cover them again after they were pecked into the rock by the desert dwellers. I had read that there may be 3000 pics. I don't know but there were a lot!! So if you can handle the hopping around boulders and sand you can find many with a up close in personal look. This would not be a good place to visit during the heat of Arizona summer.
Lisha — Google review
Absolutely a great place to go. You need to call for reservations as part of your tour of the sites is guided. The canyon is steep but worth it as there are hundreds of petroglyphs. The main ranch building is full of pioneer artifacts and a room with the best preserved pottery I have ever seen. I visited the ranch and was there 4 hours. It includes the main building, an old university archeology dig, a group of hogans and sweat lodges, and the canyon. Well worth the $35 admission.

Absolutely fantastic! Unfortunately, it is now closed for tours, possibly for good. Incredible pottery found on the ranch. Also, amazing petroglyphs down by their canyon. If they open up again, don't miss this.

Homolovi State Park, located in Winslow, AZ, offers a rich historical experience on former Hopi lands. The park features ancient areas with stone tools, petroglyphs, and traditional pit houses dating back to the fourteenth century. Visitors can explore historic ruins of pueblos and see petroglyphs while hiking through wild prairie among archaeological sites. The park also includes a museum with Hopi artifacts and a campsite for overnight stays.
What a beautiful campground. It is so convenient to I-40. We did see the ruins which are very interesting. The spots are nice and big and we even had two trees! We saw the wild burrows on and off the entire time. Would definitely return in the future.

Amazing campground within the state park. Most sites have electric and water. There is a dump station and new bathrooms and showers. Views and sunsets are fantastic. Wild burros throughout the park and sometimes in the campground. Ancient Pueblo ruins within the park.
Kristie B — Google review
Such a beautiful park! I wish I could have stayed longer! The spots were great not to close. Most sites had a covered picnic table and grill. I was on site 5 and mine didn't have a cover but a nice tree that my picnic table was under. There was a restroom and look like showers but I didn't go in. The building itself looked new. It was pretty busy.

This was a great place to camp while az was getting rain for days. It's up on a bit of a hill so we are fine. I really enjoyed watching the wild donkeys. We walked to homolovi in and loved seeing all of the pottery shards. Homolovi ii had more intact buildings and really nice walkway.
Teresa M — Google review
Surprising nice campground! This was a last minute unplanned stay and turned out to be so nice! The sites were large and next close together. Each site had a covered area with a picnic table and fire ring. Showers were clean. Wild burros free roam the park which is really neat! We could hear them braying in evening when we were around the campfire. The ruins were really neat and there’s broken pottery everywhere! Overall a great park/campground, would stay here again!

Extraordinary park to learn about the Hopi culture and archeology. Ranger Ken and Gwen are incredibly knowledgeable having spent 35 years at the park. We had the best tour and pottery demonstration rivaling any park I have ever been too. The campground is great and has 50 and 30-amp service and a sewer dump. The bathrooms are very clean and the views and space between campsites is great. Lots to see in the Winslow area, Crater. petrified forest, LaPosada,,,,, A must on your Arizona experience list!
Thom W — Google review
Loved our two night stopover here. There are showers and flush toilets that are all very well maintained and clean. The park is beautiful and very quiet ... no train noise but you see them off on the horizon and I know there are reviews of other parks that mention the noise so that was a bonus for us! The sites are large with a cabana and picnic table at each one. Just a 13 minute drive to the infamous "Standin' on the corner" location. Another review mentioned a very bumpy ride into the site, that has been fixed and it's not bad at all... would NOT stop me from going at all! Highly recommend this spot!

9-11 Memorial

Memorial park
Sights & Landmarks
The 9-11 Memorial in Northern Arizona is a solemn tribute to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The memorial features two mangled steel girders from the Twin Towers, serving as a poignant reminder of the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Located at the Remembrance Garden on East 3rd Street and Transcon Lane, this serene site honors the lives lost on that fateful day.
I parked up next to this on a morning with a beautiful blue sky, to pay my respects, being ex military! It's wonderfully laid out in its simplicity and the poignancy is tangible. I decided to touch the beams and it was quite a feeling, taking me back to the horrors, that I watched on the television in utter disbelief, from over in the UK! Well done Winslow for such a beautiful and peaceful place to visit and contemplate the past, present and future of what we do!

+JMJ...Saturday, 19 September 2020. What an awesome surprise to learn about this 9-11 Memorial. Emotionally touching to see part of the Trade Center placed on a lovely, grassy parcel of land. Deep feeling of sadness but still there was a sense of peace. Many lives were lost that day but the spirit of care and concern was enlivened in those who gave much of their time to rescue those they could and then to give consolations to families who lost loved ones. 😢 I am sure those who stopped to visit the Memorial offered a prayer for all affected. There were many pieces of memorabilia left on and inside the two beams. But, one of the most touching items left was a set of Rosary beads. A prayer tool used to prayerfully meditate on the life of Jesus Christ, God, the Word made flesh. He Who is the Resurrection and the Life. May all who perished on that terrible day be granted eternal peace, love, joy! And, a multitude of "Thank yous! and "God bless yous" be offered for all responsible for allowing that Memorial to be built in Winslow Arizona.

Historical place
Standin' on The Corner Foundation in Winslow, Arizona is a historic area that attracts many visitors. It features a two-story mural, a life-size statue, built-in seats, and native landscaping. This spot holds significance as it was immortalized in the 1972 Eagles hit song 'Take It Easy'. The lyrics from the song have made this corner famous and it has become a pilgrimage site for music lovers.
This is a wonderful opportunity for a rest stop and to get some silly selfies. Be sure to play the Eagles song "Take It Easy" as you drive through this little town. You have to admire all the details that went into creating this marvelous visual experience. Be careful as you enjoy there are lots of people enjoying it too. I drove around the block to get the shot of our car on the Route 66 shield paint in the middle of the intersection.

So other than the corner and a couple of bars and gift shops there's not a lot to do here. It's really easy to get too just off the interstate, but if you're driving an RV parking could be challenging. If you're looking for a short stop and a bit of food at an old fashioned tourist place then this is the perfect place to go

A fun afternoon standing on the corner! Nice shops for souvenirs. I was here in '22, but didn't stick around long r/t homeless on each corner. Happy to day none this time. The town has added outdoor eating/pubs since then. You have to see the world smallest chapel n garden area. Overall definately worth seeing, esp if you like Eagles music!

If you're an Eagles fan then you will want to stop at this "famous" corner. It's nice that a small town can create a tourist attraction from song lyrics! As I was driving around Winslow on my way to the corner, I figured that my wife and I would be the only visitors. I was surprised at how many other people took time to stop by this iconic corner. It's a terrific tribute to Glenn Frey and the Eagles and worth the time to stop by!

This is tough to write. The actual homage that has been created is really well done and very engaging - but Winslow is the 4th most dangerous city in Arizona and you can really feel it as you are driving in. I was by myself and felt as though I had to keep my head on a swivel the entire time, rather than enjoy the spot. Just beware and be safe.
