Winston General Store, located in Winston, New Mexico, is a well-stocked general store that offers a variety of products and services. It is open 7 days a week and provides fuel, basic groceries, hot coffee, to-go barbecue sandwiches, and showers. The store also features a gift shop with local craftsman's wares and has a generous selection of rifles, ammunition, hunting gear, and camping supplies.
This was an unexpected gem. We were tired and cold after a long mountain bike ride. Here we found hot food and drink and a place to sit by the warm stove. Not many of the general stores left. This was the real deal with a surprising large selection of everything from guns to ice-cream

Used to go in there when I would load at the mine outside of town… always super friendly, great selection of everything from hunting to household!
Daisy D — Google review
Old School General Store with an outstanding inventory for its modest size. Seems like they have at least one of everything for the camping hunter! Staff was extremely helpful and good natured. Excellent grocery choices, too. I'll definitely be back when I visit the area.
Barry C — Google review
This is an awesome store located way out in Winston, New Mexico. You can get everything from here including gas, groceries, gifts, you can borrow their phone if you cant get your cell to work, even a hot shower and so much more. You can even get a great homemade pulled pork sandwich any day of the week all day every day! I stop in this store at least once every other month just for a hot pulled pork sandwich and to look in their gift shop in the back!
Tiffiny A — Google review
Well stocked general store in the boonies. Generous selection of rifles as well as ammunition and other hunting gear. Gas and diesel prices are very reasonable for the remote location. They stock plenty of local craftsman's wares and they also have showers available. The customer service is worth the drive up the mountain!
Kermit D — Google review
Small store with very friendly service and a great variety of goods and supplies for small town. Big bonus being the only store I've visited with big game storage, showers, and hunting supplies. Friends and and I visit every time we hunt anywhere near Winston or pass through.
Eric M — Google review
This place is a must-visit. From food to camping and mountain gear. Made me think how things were a 150 years ago, this would have been a trading post out here. Perfect location for a supply store. And honest respectable people. No outrageous prices here (like some middle of nowhere stores do in NM, and... for their own reasons of extra expenses I do understand). Be sure to ask directions to the local hot food vendor around the corner. More Great People, making burgers, tacos, fries, and shakes. (Doughnuts n coffee too)

Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort

Mentioned on
2 lists
Golf course
Sierra Del Rio Golf Course at Turtleback Mountain Resort is a visually stunning facility and golf course located in Elephant Butte, New Mexico. It offers a challenging course with breathtaking views of its beautiful surroundings. Recognized as one of the top 10 golf courses in the state by Golf Digest, it's an ideal place to host large events or enjoy a round of golf with friends.
Grayson was the most welcoming. Daniel was incredibly attentive. The food was incredible, very much like being at a private country club. We really enjoyed our experience!
Consuela O — Google review
Outstanding golf course in the middle of nowhere. Every staff person that I spoke with including the grounds maintenance guys out on the course we're all super friendly. Of course was in great shape. Nice size driving range and putting green to warm up on. Price is very affordable for such a nice course. Hard to believe that you're basically surrounded by the New Mexico desert and then you've got this beautiful green lush Golf course. Definitely recommend playing this course
Milton H — Google review
Fun course with some big elevation changes and a high slope. Great condition in July 2025. I would come back to play again. Interesting layout, never boring. Hole number three is a tough one. Favorite holes were 14 and 16. Course felt like a mix of Red Hawk and Cochiti. Good carts and service. The city of truth or consequences down the road is a cool stop with hot springs
John L — Google review
Played here on October 19, 2025. The course was in phenomenal shape. The greens were immaculate, and probably rolling at a 11.5 or 12. Staff is extremely friendly, and they maintain a very low key vibe. Even though it's a a bit of a trek from El Paso we have another round booked this weekend. Highly recommend.
Jonathan S — Google review
Blair was incredible! We sat at the bar and he went above and beyond taking care of us. Gave us all the insights for our time in Truth or Consequences--like a virtual tour guide. We split a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with Hatch Chili's on it--Excellent!
Kirby S — Google review
Food was great as per usual since the place opened under new ownership. Had an amazing seared tuna and a yummy pecan salad (+ chicken). Our favorite part of the entire experience was Krystal, our bartender. She is a bartenders bartender. The only thing better than her cocktails is her contagious smile and can do attitude! A++
Dennis G — Google review
HIDDEN GEM! This course was immaculate and very scenic. Played in a scramble and got paired with some locals. Besides the -19 under card turned in from some team 🤦🏻, I’d recommend making the trip out to see it for yourself. Shoutout to Timothy, Eli, the PGA Pro’s, and the group for the warm welcome.
Tony T — Google review
It has been a number of years since I played at Sierra del Rio Golf Course. Nine of us went down this week to play the course and see the renovations of the club house and country club. The changes and devotion to the course and facilities are visibly evident everywhere. Starting with your arrival at the clubhouse. We were greeted by professional golf staff, friendly and dedicated to making our outings wonderful. The price is the best value in the state, maybe the country. Our golfing was challenging given the scenery of the course. Every direction had scenic views, and the course is well maintained. Not even a broken tee on the tee boxes. The management and owners will make this facility one of the best in the country. Pretty close right now. A little rain and a few more cuttings and it will top the charts. After golf, we had dinner in the lounge. Staff and the environment were great. The food was outstanding. The next day, we played and had a late lunch on the patio. The patio is all new with more scenery highlights. Lunch was super. The food was so good we returned for dinner that evening at the country club. Every meal was spectacular. The staff was attentive and friendly. Our entire group found the facility as one of the best. In fact, we ran into a number of other friends from Albuquerque at the course and they had the same evaluations as we do. They have added Sierra de Rio to their golf play, and restaurant list.

Frank was very pleasant and professional handingly 5 excited children. They all caught their own fish and reeled it up themselves. It was way more exciting than they imagined and easy too! The boat ride was fun. They would love to do it again. It was interesting see him cut it for us! Great fishing only 1hr and 45 minutes away!
Naomi P — Google review
A full service outfitter, all the way! Frank made sure that my husband’s birthday was unforgettable! Caught more fish than we could have imagined and we felt like we’d made a lifetime friend! He is so knowledgeable and his boat is totally equipped! We’ll be back and bring more of the family! Don’t forget to ask Frank for his recipes, he’s got some great ones! Here’s one for you , Frank Heavenly Bass 2 lbs fish fillet, drizzle lemon juice over them on a broiler pan. Broil about 5 minutes, cover with blended 1/4 c butter, 1/4 c Mayo, 1/4 Parmesan cheese and broil another 2 minutes.
Becky P — Google review
My husband and I went on a fishing trip with Frank. From the time we booked it until we were finished it was an amazing experience. Very polite and educational. We got to relax the whole trip. He even cleaned and filleted our fish. We will definitely book another fishing trip!
Ashlee W — Google review
We are local and like to take advantage of all the great local resources when we can -- what a pleasure it was to experience Elephant Butte fishing with Frank! He is a total professional and very down to earth, was very patient with my 5 yr old who talked his ear off and practically sat on his shoulder while he cleaned our catch. My son and I learned a lot about fishing from him, plus some recipe ideas for the 20-30 white bass we caught. He also brought his very sweet, mellow dog, Catch. All in all, just so great - thank you Frank!
Marianne B — Google review
The fishing highlight of my very long life! A+++ and higher experience. Our guide Frank made everything perfect! We caught our limits, he filleted them for us, and entertained us all day long with his humor and professional story telling skills. Not a single vulgar or in appropriate word ever left this gentleman’s lips. I can go on all day. Thank you so much Frank for me birthday extra special and for taking such good care of my Becky and me! Hope to see you real soon, my brother!!! 🎣❤️❤️🎣
Joey P — Google review
Frank is a great captain with good understanding of the lake and fish!! We have been with him 2 times now and have caught tons of fish and had a blast each time!! Highly recommend him if you wanna catch fish!!!
Edward C — Google review
Frank is awesome. Very knowledgeable. Took us out and taught us how to get them big white bass and wallyes. He then cleaned and filleted our fish. Awesome experience. If I could give this guy 10 stars I would.

Great day fishing!!! The fathers in my life all deserved a great day fishing and Frank made it all come together!! We went home with a boat load of fish! Frank is not only an expert guide and fishing guru but also super chill and so easy to hang with!🤩

Bodies of Water
Elephant Butte Lake State Park is a stunning destination that boasts New Mexico's largest lake, offering an array of recreational activities for outdoor enthusiasts. With over 200 miles of picturesque shoreline, visitors can indulge in boating, jet skiing, and paddleboarding while enjoying the serene beauty of the landscape. Fishing aficionados will find plenty to catch here, including bass, catfish, and walleye.
Was not expecting just how huge this lake was, the sand caught me off guard and really added to the feel of a beach more so a lake. Great to paddle board , star glaze , or just enjoy the sound of the water. 10/10 would recommend. Just be careful if you don’t have a 4x4 , you must follow the hard paths , otherwise risk getting stuck in more deeper or softer sand!
Elias L — Google review
Very unique state park on a reservoir. Nice park, clean bathrooms, just not the type of environment we enjoy. Very little trees, lots of wind in the afternoon, hot in May. Cute small towns near by. Sites are pretty big. If you like very dry weather and environments, you will like this campground. Very peaceful.
Denise W — Google review
Visited on August, we are new to New Mexico, the sun is no joke, we planned a picnic and kids to swim we were there early in the morning which wasn’t bad but would be muh better if we came with a tent or canopy
Kerime S — Google review
2nd time staying here. LOVE IT 'night said. Beautiful even though the levels are low. Quiet Beautiful views day and night. Great place to camp with or without hookups. Will be back for sure.
Monique S — Google review
Water level is low but we were able to paddle board and enjoy the afternoon. You are able to borrow a life jacket for the day at the entrance. 10.00 fee if you are not a N.M resident
L C — Google review
Elephant Butte is surrounded by picturesque views of mountains. Multiple inlets offer exploration on and off land. Unfortunately, the water continues to recede but still allows for boating activities.
Joy S — Google review
This is a great place for camping and recreation. Pull your camper right down to the waters edge and enjoy some time with your friends!
Gary K — Google review
We had such a great weekend here! I would say the only negative was some of the people. They take up A LOT of space and don't really let you sit by the water. It was just me and 2 of my boys. One small umbrella and a cooler. On the bright side....some other people saw what was happening and not only did they not mind us sitting next to them but they offered us food and more shade. I was incredibly humbled! The water was warm, and my boys truly truly enjoyed themselves.

Kelly Mine

Ghost town
Sights & Landmarks
Mostly great but There's open mineshafts. I was worried the faceless lady would push me in or somwthing when I wasn't looking. Also there's real ghosts. Maybe one of the only places you can still see them. Not reccomended for kids.
Bingus B — Google review
Obviously, the mine is CLOSED and is on private property. That being said, if there's a way to visit and experience the mine, take it!
Scott A — Google review
Start at the converted train depot library/museum in Magdalena. It'll fill you in on the history and eventual abandonment of Kelly. Look through the clippings displayed as a book. There's map in there and lot of fascinating history. As a place to explore, Kelly was fascinating. While most of the town is gone, key pieces of equipment remain., especially if you follow the trail to the top. Incredible views of the green valley and the lush greenery pepper the old heavily rutted trail to the highest mine. The cemetary next to the old church is not in good shape but fascinating reminder of these people's lives. A brief comment note on another reviews mention of the ghost town in Brody, Ca. Brody is literally one in a million with entire households still intact. On a scale of "razed rubble with random cans" as a 1 and Brody as a 10, Kelly would sit very comfortably at solid 7. 8 If you're able to do the full hike. Kelly is frequently overlooked in the tourist droves that flood New Mexico. This was fascinating, beautiful place.
Jason P — Google review
Extremely fun place to hike and explore around! A lot of abandoned mines that’s for sure! If you love history give this place a go! Beautiful surrounding mountains and views with a lot of hiking opportunities and a smell town just to the west! Do your research before you and learn about the Kelly’s before you actually go there makes the experience even better!
Troy F — Google review
Very cool place to check out! There's lots of forest roads around the town but most just turn into dead ends because of private property. If you like to hike though I'd say it's definitely worth coming out here and camping out.
WINSLEEZ — Google review
I love this place. My friends and I did a paranormal investigation here at night. It sure is very creepy at night, which was when we started the investigation. Well during the investigation, we saw eyes staring back at us from the tree line. Well it turned out to be mountain lion cubs and the mama lion was creeping back and forth ready to attack. So be careful if you go out here at night. BE AWARE OF MOUNTAIN LIONS
Michael F — Google review
Cool place. Sure can be spooky at night

Fort Craig Historic Site

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
It's a drive to get to Fort Craig. The road is gravel. Your vehicle must have good treads. Also, have cold water, walking shoes, sunglasses, an umbrella, sunscreen, and snacks. Finally, to see the Fort ,you gotta be here 8am at least. It gets hot quick here. That was my experience at the Fort when I went there with my family.
Josephina' N — Google review
Amazing history, 4 mile dirt road keeps the site more pristine, well worth the trip. Signage around the fort is very informative and visitor center staff was an excellent resource
Sarah A — Google review
Jeff, in the Visitor Center, shared an amazing amount of knowledge concerning the history of Fort Craig in a comfortable, air conditioned, well-stocked gift shop. Previous caretakers created a layout of the original Fort; self-guided tour on level gravel path. Restroom facilities available.
Sharon C — Google review
The volunteer at visitor's center was very knowledgeable about the area and the history. This place was larger than we expected. Numerous ruins. There is nice clean bathroom and there are a few picnic areas.
Heather M — Google review
Great place to visit especially if you visited the wildlife refuge nearby as well. We did both in a day. The man who manages this site was very informative. There isn't as much to see as there is at Fort Union, but it's still an experience in itself. They have stamps here for your NPS passport! A great chance to get a rare one! The final 5 miles to the site are on a dirt road so be prepared for that!
Amanda R — Google review
Don't miss this trip down history lane. Great as a stand- alone visit, but stopped here on the way to Bosque del Apache. Lots of info provided by placards throughout and by over the top helpful visitor center and park host Mark, whose Mother, it turns out, was instrumental in getting the Fort established as a landmark. Her accomplishments honored on a sign at the start of the fort tour trail. FYI visitor center is closed monday and tuesday.
Larry M — Google review
Takes a bit of a drive to get to it on a gravel road but definitely worth a stop. The ruins are pretty cool and they have signs posted along the trail explaining the different spots. There's a good chance you'll have the place to yourself.
David M — Google review
Newly updated visitor center with BLM docent; self-guided walking tour is quite extensive (paved walking paths) and informative signage. Allow at least an hour; more if you like quiet stillness with views for miles in all directions.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Preserve with plateau, woodlands, prairie & desert, with the Rio Grande flowing through the center.
The visitor center was closed when we came 2 days after Christmas, but the trails were open. Went on the mesa trail, which was a 3.8 mile loop. It was a great trail of moderate difficulty. The view from the top of the mesa is really nice. A really fun 3 hour hike, wish I would have had some more time to see the other trails.
Kavi — Google review
The wildlife gave it 2 stars. Saw 3 doves and 1 lizard. Wide open desert. Lots of pretty rocks. Good place to go to get away from crowds. Decent 360 view from the high points. Gravel and sand trails.
Cyrus B — Google review
There are some nice trails beginning at the visitor centre, and a shaded picnic area off to the side. The volunteers inside were very friendly and knowledgeable. Altogether a great place to spend a little time.
Jazz D — Google review
Amazing hikes, great views. The stay is also very comfortable. Good for a big group or solo
Sachika G — Google review
Went there in the middle of Covid so just walked the two main trails which are very nice and well marked. The park itself is fascinating with the different climates and areas within a short distance. Not sure if we will stop by again but a very nice park and very easy to get to from the highway.
Steve H — Google review
So beautiful and breathing especially at sunset. They offer lots of great scenic trails and little museums as well. And don't forget the wildlife! We saw lots of deer, coyotes, jackrabbits, and cranes.
Hannah M — Google review
It's a great hiking place with some cool views from the top. There are couple of trails with difficulties varying from easy to moderate/difficult, depending on skill. Some trails are not well marked and sandy. So just keep it in mind. Also there is not much shade. Bring water and wear a good hiking boot if planning to go for moderate/difficult trail.

Its the office of NRAO. VLA is an hour away from the office towards west.

Those who want to visit the actual radio telescope rather than this office building, please take care to search/map "Very Large Array". It is an hour west of Socorro on Highway 60.
Amy K — Google review
Well, we drove to the address given, and it was a shipping building. We even drove through the golf course to see if we could see it from behind, nope, nice golf course. Never did find the Radio Observatory. Disappointed we just continued on our journey.
Janet S — Google review
This is the administrative and scientific center building. The actual antennas are 45 miles west near the intersection of US 60 and New Mexico Highway 52. I don't know why there's pictures of the dishes here. You can't locate sensitive radio receivers in a city.

Sacred & Religious Sites
The Old San Miguel Catholic Church, an ancient place of worship, holds significant historical and cultural importance. This sacred establishment has a rich heritage deeply rooted in the traditions and teachings of the Catholic faith. Standing as a testament to centuries of religious devotion, this revered church is a symbol of spiritual unity and community gathering. Its antiquity imbues it with an aura of reverence and splendor that captivates all who enter its hallowed halls.

The serene beauty, fascinating history, and warm community make this mission an unforgettable experience. If you’re traveling through Socorro, I highly recommend stopping by to see it for yourself.

I did not stop by to attend this church. However, I did interrupt my trip briefly to check it out because of its iconic southwestern architecture. You can tell that the building has been lovingly maintained over many years. I would have liked to see the interior but that will have to wait for another trip.

Just went here for the first time with my coworkers. We were traveling from New York and decided to try this out. Totally worth the money and the scenery is like no other. The horses were also very friendly and stayed the course the entire time. I definitely will be visiting again when I’m in town.
Christopher H — Google review
We so enjoyed our ride with Thomas as our guide! This was definitely a highlight of our road trip through New Mexico. We were the only group on our ride, so we got a very personalized experience. We were able to get up close to a group of wild horses and got to cantering a bit along the way! The scenery is beautiful and the trail has a lot of variety to offer. Thomas is a fun and knowledgeable guide, he was a very interesting person to get to know along the ride. 10/10 would recommend!
Holly Z — Google review
By far the best horseback riding adventure my wife and I experienced! The views were amazing and the horses were unbelievable. Our guides, Dakodah and Jill, husband and wife went above and beyond! My poor horse, Storm, was an amazing 25 and took me, a larger man along for two hours like I wasn’t there! We galloped almost right out of the gate, up and down hills and through the Rio Grande! They will take you as fast or slow as you want to go! By far the best we have ever been on and hope to make it back!
Rik P — Google review
This was the best riding experience that my wife and I have been on, so far. This is not your typical trail ride. It definitely deserves to be called an adventure. We were very fortunate to ride with the owners, Dacodah and Jill. Wonderful people and we learned so much. Thank you and see you again.

Jill and her husband gave us the ride of a lifetime! Riding in big open spaces, during sunset, with the most gorgeous views, and going fast! Their horses were so wonderful and well trained, very responsive and eager. Thank you for the experience, and we hope to be back very soon!
Segolene R — Google review
My husband and I had the best ride of our lives here! I cannot say enough good things about this ranch. The owners are awesome and are able to accommodate any riding experience—an experienced rider like my husband, a newbie like me, and even children with special needs. The picturesque scenery along the ride was breathtaking. Riding through the Rio Grande on a hot day was nice and refreshing. The horses are extremely well-trained. If you’re new to the area, ask the owner for recommendations- he has great taste in restaurants & hot springs! Overall, this was a wonderful experience that we will never forget.

Trinity Site

Well worth the effort. Combined our NM trip with re watching Oppenheimer movie, a trip to Los Alamos NHP and National Nuclear Museum in Albuquerque. Arrive early. Suggest going to Souvenir Stand, then McDonald House , as bus lines get long ended with a visit to the Trinity Site. They only do the open house 1x a year now, in October fyi

I went while on a group trip, we had a great time touring the site and the McDonald ranch house. Our guide, Jen was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Serena — Google review
Trinity Site in New Mexico is a historically significant location, marking the site of the first atomic bomb detonation on July 16, 1945. Located within the White Sands Missile Range, it offers a rare glimpse into a pivotal moment in history and the dawn of the nuclear age. Visitors can explore the remains of the test site, including the concrete slab where the explosion occurred and the Trinity monument, which commemorates this groundbreaking event. The site is open to the public twice a year, in April and October, and provides an educational experience through informative displays and guided tours. The vast, stark desert landscape surrounding Trinity Site adds to its somber and contemplative atmosphere, making it a powerful place for reflection on the profound impact of scientific advancements on humanity. Facilities are minimal, so visitors should come prepared with water, sun protection, and appropriate clothing. Overall, Trinity Site is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, science buffs, and those interested in understanding the complex legacy of nuclear technology. Its unique combination of scientific achievement and historical gravity makes it a compelling destination that leaves a lasting impression.

Me and my family came for a visit and it was SO FUN! we bathed in the sun so much but I found the a really good tan until about July 16th we saw a big flash of light and we got instantly tanned as if god answered are weird prayers! Only downside was that we look like gouls and don't have noses but I'm sure it's just a side effect, plus I got this cool pic of a cloud I saw :) there's also a pic on there of me but it's old
Jenson B — Google review
Went last October for the public day. We flew into Albuquerque, drove down to the site, and slept in the car outside of the gate for the night so we could be in line early. Got in line, drove the road to the site with all others there for the 2 days out of the year it is open to public. The military has it down to the parking, bussing people to the ranch and the food and vendor location. I am personally not into history like my husband, but it was nice to see once in my life.
Jodi J — Google review
Site is only open 1 day a year on the 3rd Saturday in October. Free and no tickets to purchase, just make sure you arrive early...we arrived an hour before the gates opened and had over 50 cars ahead of us. By the time 8am arrived the cars were backed up to the road...about 5 miles. The site itself is a bit of a drive from the gates but the roads are good. They also have a shuttle that takes you to the McDonald house where the bomb was completed. Lots of historic pictures and information surround both the site and the house. We went with a Geiger counter which showed the radiation as pretty low, with the highest readings away from the obelisk a few feet.
Rebecca B — Google review
I have had the chance to visit this site a few times. Visiting the Trinity Site was a sobering experience. As the location of the world’s first atomic bomb test, it holds immense historical significance. The entire world changed on that July morning. You can feel the weight of the events that took place here. The site is only open to the public twice a year. We showed up to the Stallion Gate at 5 am and were 4th in line. We had a short wait for the gates to be opened. We were greeted by friendly and efficient security staff. The site itself is marked by an obelisk at ground zero, surrounded by historical photos and information. The shuttle bus to the McDonald ranch house, where Oppenheimer and other scientists observed the test, was a highlight. Many people are searching for Trinitite, the green glass mineral formed from the heat of the explosion on the desert sand. There is none left and it is illegal to remove it from the site. We sparked a lot of interest with a Geiger counter we brought with us. Be prepared for long lines and crowds, especially with the increased interest following the release of the movie Oppenheimer.

We needed a break and this place just happened to be there when we needed it. A truly artsy, one-of-a-kind place. I loved the benches at the entry, but inside there are many more local crafts and artwork. Clean bathrooms made the stop even nicer. We left with snacks, drinks and a few souvenirs.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Three Rivers Trading Post Gallery. Cameron Blagg is the artist proprietor. His western theme artwork is displayed throughout several rooms. Interesting Native American antiques are available for viewing and sale. Cameron’s personal collection includes intricate beadwork, rugs, pottery, and saddles. He is a wealth of historical knowledge, and shares interesting personal experiences. Cameron was a genuine mountain-man from Montana who discovered his artistic soul and now shares it at the gallery.

Super friendly folks and a beautiful offering of fine art, sculptures, books, clothing, jewelry, and quick snacks make this a great place to stop just north of Tularosa. It is on the main road, too,so it is very convenient to find, and there is plenty of parking. All family members will find something for themselves here!

Great little RV stop. Friendly service and nice little shop. Trains come by frequently if that bothers you. I find the sound relaxing.
J M — Google review
I dont know how nice the business is because I could not get past how brash and rude the lady behind the counter was. Stopping thru was excited to come in and shop around when we asked if there was any trash cans around that we could throw some food away in from our ling car ride. The response was NO! And if its a poopie diaper definitely not and if you have a dog out walking around you better make sure that you pick up everything and take it to the next exit some miles up the road. I completely understand not wanting to become a road side trash can. But you dont have to be rude when asked a simple question. I would have spent all kinds of money on souvenirs for my family that was with me and for family members at home but there has to be a line drawn at some point when it comes to customer service. And when your initial response is to be short and rude I can definitely spend my money elsewhere!

We stayed for the night to go see the white sands, and it was amazing! We did the wine tasting, which was super cool! Our site was very well kept! The host was super super nice and inviting! The sites are wide and spacious that even us as first time RVers could easily get into it, and we have a 33ft trailer. I would definitely stay here again! ( I included views from our campsite)!

Tularosa Vineyard is fun to visit, preparing for a new owner with lots of plans. The wines and ciders are very tasty. Looking forward to returning to enjoy more wine and cider and see what the new owner adds to the selections. They also have pistachios growing on site.

Cute place with a relaxed atmosphere. We did a tasting with Lexi, who was wonderful. We met and talked with the owner, who is hard working and down to earth. My craft beer loving husband bought 3 bottles of wine. So glad we stumbled on this place!

On the way returning to Albuquerque after visiting family in Tularosa my daughter encouraged me to stop after having passed it dozens of times before either because of being in a rush home or some other thing. What a surprising delight. The wine (all of it) was absolutely the best. I have a few favorites to say the least. The new owner as well as the previous owner were great company! We will be back. Wished we had found this gem before but it’s better late than never!

Amazing experience! We stayed the night in our RV through harvest host, drank wine with the owner on the porch for a few hours and had some great conversation. Their sangiovese is one of the better dry reds I have had at that price point.

I have been an online customer of Del Sol Tularosa for a few years now. I absolutely LOVE the Pinon Salve! When I place an order, I can guarantee it will be shipped/delivered on time, packaged with care and a handwritten note enclosed EVERY SINGLE time. Now, that's outstanding customer service! I will continue to be a loyal customer and wanted to personally say- Thank you, Del Sol Tularosa! #satisfiedcustomer

This shop had the most beautiful jewelry that was more reasonably priced than any other shop in Alamogordo and Cloud Croft. Aside from the beautiful jewelry, the shop had other Native American-made items. The shop owner was very nice and helpful. Visit the shop; you’ll be glad you did!

Del Sol went above expectations to make my order right. I ordered a blanket online and it arrived promptly via UPS but unfortunately it was the wrong color scheme. When I contacted them they quickly acknowledged the problem, refunded me shipping costs, so that I can return the blanket and sent me the correct color by priority. I’m super pleased with my experience and the product. I originally chose them Due to their competitive prices but if I need another one I’ll be sure to stick to Del sol.

Three Rivers Petroglyph Site

Mentioned on
1 list
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Three Rivers Petroglyph Site is located 28 miles south of Carrizozo, New Mexico. It's a hidden gem worth the drive, featuring an amazing grouping of petroglyphs in a breathtaking setting with stunning vistas. Visitors can purchase a day pass for $5 and explore the area, but should note that the hiking area is not wheelchair friendly. The site also offers campsites, although they were closed during one visitor's Labor Day weekend visit in 2023.
A very unique stop if you have any interest in Native American history. The trail is easy to walk with a little elevation gain but it is in the sun the entire time. There is a small onsite museum and bathrooms along with plenty of parking. There is a kiosk to pay the park fee but if you have a NPS pass that covers the entry.
Michael Y — Google review
There are lots of amazing Patrick lifts spread out quite a distance. I wore flip-flops because I wasn’t expecting it to be such a hike. Make sure you wear hiking shoes as the terrain is very rocky. There are also some steep climbs if you’re not used to hiking.
Denney L — Google review
Wow! What an amazing experience, I cannot wait to come back. Such an honor to be able to view the landscape and petroglyphs. I wish people would respect the area and not disturb the ancient images.
Corie S — Google review
Not pet friendly I bet this place is really cool. We drove a little ways to see the petroglyphs, but then when we got here, realized I couldn't take my dog on the trail; so we left. She is not completely registered as a service dog, but that's what she is and was not permitted. The gentleman in the visitor's center was very kind. I really hope they can update their policies to include our fur babies.
Traveling W — Google review
Just a few minutes off the highway. All pavement, very well groomed facility. Walk perfect safe paths, always scanning for snakes & discovering fabulous Petroglyphs created by Your realitives. Yep, ol Grandpa/Auntie M or cousin Clem scraped - scratched hundreds of head spinning glyphs.
Bill B — Google review
I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, and I must say, it left an impression on me I won't soon forget. The sheer number of petroglyphs is astounding – over 20,000 of them etched into the volcanic rock. Walking among them, I was struck by the stunning beauty and intricate detail of some of the glyphs, a testament to the artistic skill of the Jornada Mogollon people who created them centuries ago. It truly feels like stepping back in time and imagine the stories behind each glyph. The trail is well laid out and relatively easy to follow. There is a shaded area that one can take a rest and admire the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The visitor's area offers clean, modern restrooms and facilities for picnicking and camping. This incredible site is well worth the moderate entrance fee.
Terry R — Google review
I think this site is on the national level. The trails lead you directly to petroglyphs and you are free to explore every angle to find all the hidden petroglyphs. Its amazing how many there really are. I came her after visiting the national site in Albuquerque and this was much better in my opinion. There's a day fee of 7$ and a little area for picnicking and camping. The hike is rocky but not steep. November is a good time to visit for cooler weather. I'd imagine it gets really hot in the summer. They have a shaded area half way along the hike. The proximity to Lincon National forest and white sands NP makes this an amazing place worth spending multiple days in the area to explore. Stargazing was excellent with zero light pollution. Wildlife was rare but the coyotes were howling after sunset so keep your eyes open and you might see some activity.
Cyrus B — Google review
This is a huge Pistachio! You can buy various flavors inside along with lots of tourist items like T shirts, magnets and more. I really did like looking at the trees in the orchards and seeing the actual fruit growing there. It is very busy and people were really lined up for the ice cream. A great stop for snacks and photos

Valley of Fires Recreation

Park
Nature & Parks
Valleys
Nice little park right off 380 as you travel east/west across New Mexico. Easy in/out for big rigs but parking for big rigs is limited. The bookstore/visitor center has good info, helpful friendly staff, maps and souvenirs. There was a single, clean bathroom inside. The campsites have a covered Ramada, picnic table and grill. There are sites with pull throughs, electric and water. There’s a dump station available. The sites and road are paved but not all sites are level. The camping area is on a raised island overlooking the lava flow so it is windy. There’s no natural shade. But the views of the mountains, malpais and plains are gorgeous. I bet sunset and sunsets are amazing. This park is certainly close enough to visit the ski areas in the Lincoln NF, White Sands NP, and more. The interpretive trail is paved and 3/4 mile long and showcases many interesting features of the flows. The trail is ADA accessible but there are a couple cracks in the pavement. Dogs are welcome.
Nikki ( — Google review
Beautiful scenery and stunning lava formations. There is a nice paved trail which about 3/4 mile long and takes you through the lava flows with points of interest and descriptions of the wildlife, plants and the lava flow. Campgrounds were clean. The gazebos were about 50 feet from the RV site which is not ideal. There is water and electric on most sites. I gave it 4 stars due to the dump being closed and I didn’t see that anywhere on their reservation website. I recommend visiting in the colder months since there are flies in the hotter months. Thousands of tiny little flies flying into your ears, mouth and eyes which were are relentless. We had reservations for two nights but cut it short. That is how bad the little fruit flies were.
Jpass12 — Google review
Just stayed one night as we passed through but a REALLY cool spot in the remains of a lava flow. Highly recommend the nature walk. Long spots with 50amp/water for our RV and tow. A bit tight to turn in the campground but navigable. It is on the desert so there is no shade.
Wendy T — Google review
The Valley of Fires Recreation Area is BLM land that includes a nature center, small camping area, picnic pavilions, and more importantly, a paved and accessible walking trail that takes the visitor out into a small portion of the Carrizozo Malpais lava field. The paved path includes about a dozen interpretive signs that speak to the lava field and the ecosystem of the area. This is a must-see for anyone driving this section of Highway 380. No need to go to Iceland when you can see lava fields here! The shapes and textures are amazing, as are the plants that have managed to grow in this landscape. We completed the Malpais Trail in about 1/2 hour. The lava fields were created from lava flowing from vents in the valley floor almost 3,000 years ago. Looking at satellite images, the over 40 mile lava flow is visible as a dark gray/ charcoal field next to the rest of the desert landscape.
Dawn J — Google review
I really enjoyed my stay at this campground in October 2024. It was site 5, with great views all around! We had plenty of room for the RV, tow vehicle, dog cage, and chairs! It was great having a sealed trash bin at the site so trash didn’t collect in the RV or around the area. The washrooms were close and clean, just a quick walk. This is a fairly quiet area, a small amount of road noise, but nothing major. The campground host was accessible and very friendly. He really makes one feel relaxed and welcomed into the park. I’d recommend this campground as it’s great value.
Elizabeth T — Google review
Didn't really know what to expect from this place, but we wish we had planned on more than one night. The lava fields were BEAUTIFUL, and the nature trail was very informative and amazing to think of what that must have looked like when the lava was flowing. The campsite was clean & quiet. The gnats were incessant, but at night the bats come out and the gnats disappear! The winds got up to 50+mph overnight which was fun to sleep through in the RV.
Deanna F — Google review
Valley of Fires is an excellent place to camp. The main trail is well maintained and there are opportunities to go off trail. All the campgrounds are well labeled and have a camping area, covered picnic table, and water spigot. The bathrooms/showers were very clean. We also got a chance to check out the little bookstore/visitor center - the guide was very nice and welcoming. I would absolutely camp here again!
Angela T — Google review
Valley of Fires Recreation area was a great experience. First, I would like to give my absolute appreciation for the staff / camp host. They do a tremendous job keeping the site very clean and quiet. The restrooms were spotless, and that was just shocking for an elevated restroom. It is close to a small town with lights, but you could still see the galactic center with your naked eye just after sunset for a couple of hours. I'm sure the summer months have an even greater view. There is a nice walking trail that takes you close to the lava rocks.

You just don't expect a gallery with a collection of this size and breadth in such an out-of-the-way spot. I've visited twice in 3 years when I happened to be in the area, and I had a great experience both times. Knowledgeable and interesting staff, a funky/good display space, and tons of photographic talent represented. And it's all NM photographers and NM subjects, which is a nice and appropriate focus, but is in no way a limitation of the artistic scope of the collection.

St Joseph Apache Mission

Sights & Landmarks

Received sacrament, knelt down to pray, and the wind blew the sweet smell of rain into the church just as thunder gently rumbled above. What a beautiful Mass. As a child I would come to Mescalero every summer and would visit this church. Now as an adult and receiving communion, it's going to be a core memory, for sure!!!

To see such pretty stone architecture in this area is an awesome thing, reminiscent of a small cathedral. Just a tip: be mindful to to keep your mouth shut when you stare up into the rafters, as everyone naturally does; there have always been at least a few bats that roost in the ceiling beams. The mission is truly a beautiful & spiritual place.

Absolutely beautiful church but filled with bat poop!!! You could hear the bats all around. M It was on everything. It really seems like a health hazard. There was a funeral the day before we came to visit, so I know it was recently used. If you come here bring a change of shoes or some Lysol!

The Dam House at Grindstone Lake

Mentioned on
1 list
Recreation center
Nature & Parks
The Dam House at Grindstone Lake is a beautiful destination nestled in a forested area, offering a picturesque combination of lake and natural surroundings. Visitors can enjoy activities such as swimming, kayaking, and fishing. While alcohol is not permitted, some guests have been seen bringing it along. The presence of bathrooms with running water adds to the convenience.
What a great place to swim, paddle, fish, bike, or just hang out! Very family friendly and great for picnicking. There's a path all the way around the lake, so there's plenty of lake shore to find a secluded spot for hanging out. The dam is off limits, so you will need to hike or bike around on the trails to get to the far side. There are port-o-lets and trailer-based restrooms on the parking lot side and a ways down the path on the same side of the lake if you follow the wide path, but it is very primitive on the far side with only a single-track hiking/biking trail. We visited in July and the water was cool and refreshing (I would guess about 70°F). Entry fee is $5 per car, but free if you bike in. There's plenty of parking, but if you visit on the weekends, be aware that you may need a reservation. There's a boat launch and boathouse where they rent all sorts of watercraft, from paddle boats (leg-powered), to canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards. When we were there, there was also a food truck serving pizzas and other such food. The lake does not allow motor-powered craft, but I believe that electric fishing boat motors are allowed. Best to check, though. COVID-19: Masks are required, but in my experience, once in, not many people follow the rule.
Dan S — Google review
Beautiful lake and forest combination. This place is good for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. There is no alcohol permitted but I saw many guests that had brought alcohol anyways. It has bathrooms with running water which is great! It is very busy in the summer. 4 stars because you have to haul all of your belongings from parking to the lake. So, if you go far around the lake to find a spot you have to haul your ice chest, canopy, and other belongings. Otherwise, great experience and beautiful views. Our family had a great time!

The lake is beautiful. Nice waters and super awesome hiking/biking trails all around. You can do it til your heart is content. The only downside is there is A LOT of people there and unfortunately they leave their trash behind. Take the trails to avoid the crowds. During two bike rides I didn’t encounter anyone on them. Such a shame because they offer amazing views.

Great location! The lake is nice, but it’s slightly dirty, we assume because it was extremely busy. The trails around the lake are perfect for trail running or biking which is why we would definitely return. Recommend going in the off season to truly enjoy this location.

Nice Lake at Ruidoso, NM. In Jan 2021, when we were there, some renovation works on road, base ongoing. Hopefully, after the work, whole place will be more charming. Boating was restricted due to COVID. Overall awesome lake nearby, especially who lives in El Paso TX.

If you're in the area, be sure to wet your whistle at No Scum Allowed Saloon. Fun atmosphere, locals, and travels. We camped at Valley of Fires. It is just a short 20-minute drive from there. We enjoyed our visit with Karen and several locals while we were there.

What a treasure on a road trip! This gem is everything you expect a saloon to be...friendly patrons, talkative and knowledgeable staff/owner, and character oozing out of every plank and nail hole. Plenty of memories and paraphernalia all around to keep your eyes busy while you munch on a bowl of delicious roasted peanuts and listen to Karen proudly tell the history of the No Scum Allowed Saloon and White Oaks to each newcomer. Great way to spend an afternoon, evening, day, or even a whole weekend!

Noisy Water Winery, located in Riudoso, takes its name from the town's river. The winery offers a variety of unique wines such as Besito Caliente and Rojo Caliente infused with New Mexico chile peppers, along with Jo Mammas Red, a sweet red wine. In addition to wines, the winery also produces flavorful cheeses like Green Chile Jack and Ghost Chile Jack.
This place was awesome. I came here for wine tasting. Very pleasant seating arrangements with merchandise stands set up out of the way. There was a very nice bar style serving area for wine tasting. There are also nicely separated table/booth seating, as well as outdoor patio area. Every single thing I tried was delicious. Red wine, white wine, rosé, bubbly, and cider - all delicious. Additionally, the staff were really polite and provided exceptional service. Cheese board, prosciutto panini, drinks, staff, and the shop - all 10/10. Will definitely be back.

We had a great experience here. We did the tasting along with an amazing charcuterie board. Our server, David, was amazing. We will definitely return and visit the Albuquerque location!

one of my favorite places and favorite wines to get! only 4 stars because the white lights are hideous. a warmer, yellow light ambiance would make this place even more AMAZING. staff, DAVID, was PHENOMENAL!

Very nice building and patio. The pours were small (3-4 oz). The semi sweet Reisling was nice. The staff wasn't very friendly and the service was not good at all. We ordered food and wine and no one ever came back to check on us. There was maybe 10 customers. As we left, we thanked the staff and said goodbye. No one responded. Not likely to return.

Stopped by this winery after shopping. This place did not disappoint. Janet was very knowledgeable on the wines and suggested the ones we would like based on our tastes. We would definitely come back for more wine and cheese. This place has a very good chill vibe. Try out the Demigod room when there. We ordered the baguette platter, which was really good. If you are unsure of which cider to get, try the cider flight. The pomegranate one I liked the best!!!

Pillow's Funtrackers in Ruidoso, New Mexico is a lively amusement park located at the heart of the city. It's a popular spot for thrill-seekers and families, offering go-kart racing, mini-golf, bumper boats, an arcade, and a Mountain Maze with hidden checkpoints to find. During summer, kids can enjoy gem panning.
This place is awesome. It has something for everyone, honestly. Three different kinds of go kart tracks, mini golf, a maze, bumper cars and boats, and VR. You think it's pricey? We did go karts and a round of mini golf for three people for 35.00. Try doing that anywhere else. So much fun.
Kelly A — Google review
Just had my 22nd birthday here yesterday. I brought my friends (all them are also adults with no children) and we had a great time! We did mini golf, bumper boats, the maze, panning for gemstones, and the pro go kart track and no children necessary it was so fun for us. We drove all the way up to ruidoso from Artesia, and it was worth the drive. The weather has been really bad this month, with the whole town of ruidoso flooding a few days ago so I called the day before to make sure they’d be open, and we would be safe to drive up there. The man on the phone was super nice and let me know we would be good to drive up there but there would be a few bridges in town that are closed, and he was spot on we had no trouble on our drive up there despite the rain. It was raining still a little when we got there, but all the attractions were still open! The rain broke after a while and the sun revealed to us the beautiful location this park is set in. Idk if kids would appreciate it like we did but the park was the cleanest amusement park I’ve ever been to, and every activity we did came with a breathtaking view of the trees and the mountains. 💞💞

Very fun place for kids and adults to play! We used the $100 discount ticket bundle and it was enough for 6 adults and 4 kids to play for a couple of hours. The bumper boats were the crowd favorite- perfect to cool off in the summer. Adults loved the pro track and fast go-carts. Great family run institution!

We are here on vacation so despite it raining we chose to take our kiddos here. I’m so glad we did! We were the only group there. The workers pretty much just followed us from attraction to attraction. They were so friendly and helpful despite having to run the go karts and boats while it drizzled on us. Great service and great staff!

This place was super fun we enjoyed it, lots of fun activities to do and enjoy with family , one thing I commend was that staff were helpful, when my husband lost his wallet they found it and were kind enough to return it, considering we are not from Ruidoso. Big thanks for the help we appreciate your kindness. ❤️
Ameurfina T — Google review
Only played mini golf. The course has too many holes where the challenge is the slope. When all players take the six-stroke maximum and give up, that's not a good hole. Some holes had damaged "turf." We still had fun, and the setting is pretty, but the course itself is not so great. Nice staff or else I'd rate it the three stars it more deserves.

The best thing about our visit was the weather. This was our first and last visit. We chose to buy tickets in the back row of the open air seating section to avoid the sun. A couple was sitting in our seats when we arrived and when we told them they were in our seats, they asked if we had tickets. We showed them our tickets and only then did they move a few seats down. We asked where their tickets were and they said they didn't have any! As the next few hours unfolded, several other parties arrived that obviously didn't have tickets, as they were trying to decide where to sit. We heard a few say that tickets aren't required in the open air section. Well, evidently, they're only required for honest people. Everyone else is entitled to ride on the backs of those who pay the hefty ticket prices. We saw plenty of security staff walking around, but none checking tickets. If facility management isn't going to prioritize this, then why shouldn't everyone know about it? Everyone should get in for free!
Lisa C — Google review
This track charges ridiculous amounts for every seat, including those in the sun, probably why it's not very well attended. Also, no one maintains the chairs, so even after paying $45, you still have to get napkins and wipe the dirt from your chair and table. The sound system is terrible so you cannot hear the announcer call the race unless you're under a speaker or TV. Been to better tracks with a more enjoyable atmosphere. This one is solemn. I gave it a 4th star just because of its view of the Lincoln forest and mountain air, but that's really more of a comment on its location than the track.

It was my first time at a horse race! It was so much fun! We sat, we stood by the rails, we bet. We did it all. Everyone was nice and one of the horses came up to us and we were able to pet it. They are definitely people oriented. They want you to have a great time. The bar area is clean and the atmosphere amazing! Will he going back!

First time visiting this place and I was impressed. The General Admission parking and the Casino parking are free. I visited to see a free concert. Little Joe y la Familia was SO good. The concert was held in a big white tent that is closer to the casino parking lot. All the employees were helpful and kind. There are port-a-potties outside the tent. They offer food, drinks, and alcoholic beverages there. They had chairs and tables (first come first serve) and a dance floor. The parking is very hectic, but there are sufficient amount of spaces, you just have to walk a bit. There are bathrooms inside the casino, too, that is directly across the tent. I definitely recommend the concert events.

My family has been going to Ruidoso Downs for years. We are New Mexico horse breeders and racers. Ruidoso Downs is a favorite track of ours. The facilities are aging but it is still a thrill to head to the races. The horse facilities are very nice, the barns are well maintained and the barn staff is good. At the track the management and staff are top notch. The valets go above and beyond to get you parked and take very good care of your vehicle. In the stands there are many seating options to enjoy the days races. Be sure to get a program to be informed about the races and the horses. Up in the turf club and the Jockey's club meal options are wide and good. There is no shortage of food here. The wait staff again are top notch and go above and beyond to take care of you. I really love Ruidoso Downs and highly recommend a visit. The open Memorial Day and the meet ends Labor Day with the $3million All American Futurity. See you in the winners circle!

Three Stars because it was a nice family event. We enjoyed watching the races from the table in the smokehouse area. We paid $120 for a table not covered. If we were to do it again I would definitely get covered, as it was very hot. Service in this area was non existent. We had to walk to the bar to order everything we wanted. I asked about food and she said she would send someone over to take our order. About the 15 minutes later someone arrived to take our food order. The only time I saw the server was to take order, drop food, and bring the check (which I had to go find her to ask for) I was overcharged for two double mixed drinks. I showed her on the menu where it had the prices listed for a double. She called the manager. I waited probably another 15 plus minutes and no manager showed. She ended up giving me the difference in cash and said the manager would reimburse her. I did assure that she was for certain going to get reimbursed, as I didn’t want her to personally give me money out of her pocket. She said she would. Overall we enjoyed the day and experience.

Race track was great the casino was not so good most of the help was good I was on a gameking Keno machine the erase button would make a max bet and play. The technician on Friday at 6:00 PM attempted to test the game with my money and advised me the games were too old and nobody that knows you shouldn't play Keno anyway. As a retired casino executive with 35 years in the slot field I found him unprofessional and poorly trained.

Really nice tribute park. Don't confuse it with the place to the right of it that isn't always open. Great outdoor space too. The movie gives a great overview of the time line. We learned a lot. Quite a bit of memorabilia inside. No souvenir sales there but there are some across the street.

Wonderful exhibit that teaches about the history of Smokey the Bear, has a wide variety of memorabilia, and educational content on both the causes of wild fires and the purpose that natural wild fires serve. The outdoor area is well kept with most of the plants marked so you can learn to identify the vast diversity of plant life.

We stopped here even though we knew they were closed that day, hoping we could maybe see something from the outside. One of the workers happened to be there for a private event, and she was nice enough to let us go take a quick tour of the outside and smokey memorial. Then she even gave us a couple stickers, postcard and pamphlet. She made our day!

Perfect little roadside attraction while you're going down the roads less travelled in New Mexico. Amazing history about 'Smokey the Bear' and the inspiration for Smokey himself. I really enjoyed stopping here. It was a surprise pitstop I really enjoyed. Right along the highway too.

Very cool historical park. Easy parking on a Sunday afternoon. Lots of facts about how Smokey the Bear came to be. The museum is $6 for adults and you’ll watch a movie on the history of Smokey the Bear and how Ray Bell took care of him and his history as he ages. Outside you’ll find his grave and a tribute statue to firemen who lost their lives trying to fight wildfires. Worth it to see. Lastly, There’s a very small gift shop beside the museum.

A MUST VISIT! I didn't realize how much I could learn about Smokey the Bear and wildfires. They have tons of information on both within the museum, plus a video you can watch. The park portion of it is beautiful and it was really neat being able to see where he is buried. I learned that 9/10 wildfires are started by humans, ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT WILD FIRES!

This was an interesting side trip for us when we were in Ruidoso. So much info stuffed into such a small package! I highly recommend if you are in the area!

What a museum and gift shop! Smokey the Bear has been memorialized in such a special way. The history here and his story is amazing and will luckily live on in our hearts forever. The museum is a must. Then you exit out into the gardens. Beautiful and also contain his burial site. After strolling through the gardens you exit out to the nearby gift shop. Amazing memorabilia and special gifts are available to purchase. Nat was waiting patiently. Her knowledge and love for both Smokey and the town was impressive. This is a must stop for all ages.

Such a wonderful gem! Has the history of Smokey the bear with indoor and outdoor exhibits. A hispanic woman working today was super friendly and knowledgeable. She gave me good information on the park and surrounding areas. A must see.
Dom R — Google review
This was a wonderful and very sweet stop on my trip. It's right on the 2-lane highway in a cute little town. The OG real life Smokey was born in the Capitan Mountains. After the rangers rescued him and fixed up his little burned bear paws, he lived in the zoo in Washington DC so people from all over could visit him. After his death, Smokey's body was flown home and this is his final resting place. The museum and gift shop is filled with incredible memorabilia. There is a ton of information and a short film about the Forestry's prior campaigns and how the idea of Smokey the Bear started, then how the real bear cub became the very effective mascot for prevention of forest fire. A neat bit about the gift shop is that it's made from reclaimed wood from the forest where Smokey was rescued. For $2 to enter the museum, it's definitely worth it to honor and learn more about the little bear that saved our forests.

Fort Stanton Historic Site, located in New Mexico, is a well-preserved military fort with a rich history dating back to 1855. It has witnessed significant events such as the Indian Wars, Civil War, and the Billy the Kid era. The site also served as a tuberculosis hospital and an internment camp for WWII German sailors. Visitors can explore various buildings and exhibits that offer insights into its historical significance. The on-site museum provides a 10-minute video presentation and features a gift shop.
Excellent Museum and historic site. Several of the buildings you can walk through and see how the soldiers and occupants lived from the time period that this fort was occupied. You go through the hospital their barracks, the dining hall. There was a lot of incredible history here that I was not aware of please do yourself a favor and spend some time walking around the grounds reading the different signs on the grounds. It was a $7 fee to go through everything, if you are a veteran it is free. What a great place hidden away in the mountains, very very cool

Interesting array of different archtecture thru the ages it was actively being used from 1855. It's been a tuberculosis hospital, POW camp, and of course, a US Calvary fort. Many buildings are open to walk through.
Diane F — Google review
So much history at this one place! The varied uses through the years make a visit very enjoyable. Many of the buildings have fallen into disrepair, but restoration is ongoing and the completed areas are great!
David S — Google review
Fort Stanton offers an impressive experience. The visitor center provides ample parking, and the staff are exceptionally helpful, offering a wealth of information and a comprehensive guide map. The resources and accommodations surpass those of many other New Mexico forts. A recommended highlight is the 11-minute film detailing the fort's history. This informative movie reveals that Fort Stanton served as New Mexico's first German internment camp during WWII. (It's worth noting, from personal family history, that another German internment camp existed near Carlsbad, NM.) The fort itself is remarkably well-preserved, featuring brick and rock structures that remained in continuous use until the early 2000s. Three buildings particularly stand out for me: the new hospital, which houses equipment from the 1940s, and the Barracks/Dining hall, so authentically arranged that it transports visitors to the mid-to-late 1800s when the fort functioned as a military post. Finally, The Catholic Chapel is remarkably well-preserved, appearing as if a mass has just concluded. Overall, Fort Stanton Historic Park is an exceptionally worthwhile destination.
Terry R — Google review
We stumbled across this site while looking for a hike. Its a fantastic place that is working hard to save history. We ended up spending almost 3 hours walking around, going into the open buildings, and the visitors center. The museum and visitors center is really well done and the volunteers a wealth of information. Ended up doing the cemetery hike which was lovely. About 2.5 miles long
Kyra P — Google review
Very cool place to go check out. A ton of history at this fort. We really enjoyed being able to walk into some of the buildings and see exhibits that took you back in time. The fort does a great job at telling the history, along with pictures and pieces to help with the visual including trying on old uniforms and ringing the church bell. Inside the museum there is a little gift shop and you can watch a 10 minute video telling the history of the fort and the area. $7/person with kids under 16 free. This is definitely worth going to see if you are in the area. Restrooms on site as well with benches scattered throughout the fort.

Great piece of American history. There is a fantastic small museum and then several original buildings to walk through. They are in various stages of reconstruction, with some returned to almost original states, some representing the tuberculosis hospital stage and some still ravaged by time and various construction phases.
Steven H — Google review
An immensely well kept and preserved historic site with original buildings from years past, some that still show the passage of time. Although I arrived late and was unable to do a full tour of the place, it was interesting to see the buildings, the barracks, officers quarters, medical area, etc and felt like you took a leap back in time.
