Veterans Memorial Park

Mentioned on
5 lists
Memorial park
Nature & Parks
Veterans Memorial Park is a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women of the United States Military, honoring their service since 1776. Inspired by the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C., this park features a unique Walk of Education that guides visitors through significant military conflicts, providing insights into each era's sacrifices. A highlight is the half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which stands as a poignant reminder of those who served.
A beautiful and sad place. I had to touch “The Wall” to experience the place in a personal way. As a Vet I feel connected there. The monuments to each war can leave one amazed with the body counts. Each time I visit there it’s like being there for the first time. I deeply respect this place.
Paul L — Google review
very nice memorial. easy access & connected to the healing waters trails along the rio grande.
Danadee B — Google review
Wonderful memorial right in town. A must stop and a museum to tour as well. Reminder to us of sacrifice.
C B — Google review
This is technically a park, but it's more of a place of somber contemplation than raucous good times. There's not much shade here, and it tends to be windy. There's no playground and only a few picnic tables. There's a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and an old ambulance on site. There's also a much smaller-than-real-life replica of the Statue of Liberty. There's a museum in the park too, dedicated to the military. I've never been in the museum. This is where you come to think about wars and the people who fought them.
Cee G — Google review
Learned something... history class was not as thorough as I thought.
Jolene F — Google review
What a great Memorial Park. Very well kept. Loved finding my cousin's name on the wall. We enjoyed the museum but we were running out of time so will definitely go back when we have more time to spend there.
Sue P — Google review
This is a wonderful memorial for all our past and present veterans. The stories all the collections tell of the service members and their families are unforgettable and most can't be replicated. The time, effort, and donations given are amazing. Thank you for all you do.
David S — Google review
This is one of the best Veterans Memorial's in the country. From the air, it looks like its layed out like the Medal of Honor. Beautiful miniature Vietnam memorial wall. Inside has a large, well preserved and documented collection of memorabilia from various era's.

The park next to the pool is a gem. Picnic tables in the shade is a rare find in NM.
Hey M — Google review
Love the pool in TorC! The aerobics class is invigorating & lots of fun. My only criticism is that I find it very odd that the pools open season is the same as outdoor pools in the northern states. It's warm in New Mexico all year! Keeping the pool open would great.
Rita H — Google review
The pool is an outdoor pool, so in the summer the pool is baking under the desert sun. It's often closed when it's supposed to be open due to lack of staff. The little park next to the pool is great. Does it have a name? There's no sign saying its name, no informational plaque. The park has green grass...such a treat in the desert. There's a swing set there, including a swing for kids with disabilities. There's a dispenser with free doggie waste bags. There are a couple of picnic tables and a couple of trees. Shade!!!! Sweet! It's a really nice little park and a fun place to hang out and maybe even get out of the sun.
Cee G — Google review
Did not experience, rating based on how it looks from outside the fence. POOL OPENS ON MEMORIAL DAY FOR THE SEASON (until Labor Day?) !! Closed until then. Too bad, April weather here is great for outdoor swimming.
Denise R — Google review
Pretty good but there never open because of short staff and they are always packed😕
Charlette G — Google review
Great place. Encountered some very wierd people. Drifters. People who just stare. Empty streets. Eerie looking folks. Quiet streets and all over sudden someone runs across an alley screaming and looking back. No one's chasing them.. The smile from a very high hill at night with drum beats and stories of a black voodoo and hexes by a tribe of black people that resides there. Dogs running asross town in packs chasing no one. Motels who's lights come on by themselves. Motel doors open by themselves. Things fall of tables by themselves.
The M — Google review
Small town centered over natural hot springs which attracks visitors year round. Most businesses are catered to visitors with large number focused on health and new age ideals.

Riverbend Hot Springs

Mentioned on
2 lists
Hotel
Nature & Parks
Nestled on the banks of the Rio Grande, Riverbend Hot Springs is an adult-only retreat offering free Wi-Fi, parking, and access to eight pools filled with hot spring water. The temperature of the water ranges from 95-108 degrees, providing a relaxing soak for guests. After unwinding in the pools, visitors can cool off under the shaded river deck or covered patio area. The property boasts scenic views and is within walking distance of Ralph Edwards Park.
What a View! Perfect Stop on Our Girlz Trip We stopped at Riverbend Hot Springs during a Girlz Trip and—WOW—what a view! The water was absolutely amazing, and soaking while looking out over the river and mountains was such a peaceful, unforgettable experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the entire area was clean and well-maintained. We especially appreciated the opportunity to see wildlife while we soaked—it added such a special touch to an already perfect visit. Highly recommend this stop if you're in the area. We'll definitely be back!
Tru P — Google review
We selected this hotel for a trip to the Trinity site in October. The room was extra spacious with an oversized jacuzzi soaking tub by the east-facing window for sunrise. The ADA shower meant extra roomy bathroom, and the kitchenette was a perfect size. The service and walk-thru welcome were top notch, and staff did walk throughs of the soaking pools every 15m. Coffee and tea were always available and the amenities were unbeatable. The property and grounds are well landscaped and maintained, and the overlook onto the river is unsurpassed - why we chose this one over other hot springs hotels. The town of T or C is quite small with limited dining options, and fairly remote from ABQ or Las Cruces if you want to sight-see. That is the only downside of the location at all. Otherwise, the grounds and hotel are very nice and exceeded my expectations.
Elizabeth A — Google review
I've been to hot springs resorts all over the country and this is still in the top 3. Beautiful facility right on the Rio grande. This is a quiet, zen, relaxing atmosphere. 7 pools i think all different temps and dry sauna, cold showers. Private tubs available which I didnt try. Note that unique to most you purchase by the hour instead of day pass, and reservations are required
Michael C — Google review
This overnight stay in our RV was just perfect. The hot springs are so clean and well maintained, as is the property! Quiet, peaceful feeling and hushed tones enhance the experience. You can rent robes and towels. The RV spot was pleasant with hookups. There is a communal kitchen with coffee and facilities to share. All in all - a really fun overnight!
Valerie N — Google review
Everything was great from the staff to the stay. Well managed well designed well kept. Wow. This must take a lot of work to keep this nice. Least favorite thing the coffee. Allot of cute places around including a coffee /book store. We really enjoyed ourselves and will be back soon and often.
Teresa L — Google review
The private soaks are so dreamy. Water is perfect, views are gorgeous. Went on a cold-ish November day, it was glorious. Booked a couple hours in advance. They have towels and all you need for rent, and clean private shower cubicles for anyone to use.
Ashie — Google review
Riverbend is a must visit in T or C! The best hot spring in town! It’s absolutely beautiful, clean, and relaxing. Everything you want when going to a hot spring. My husband and I booked private pool Rio, and had a wonderful experience! Would recommend Riverbend to anyone!
Kayla T — Google review
We recently did a private soak and really enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the private room. It was great looking out over the mountains and the river. Facility was clean and the water nice and hot. Love the cold water bucket right above the pool so you can cool off.

Spaceport America Visitor Center

Mentioned on
3 lists
Tourist information center
Museums
Science Museums
The Spaceport America Visitor Center is a must-visit for space enthusiasts. As America's first commercial spaceport, it was designed to accommodate both vertical and horizontal aerospace vehicles. While the facility itself is closed, guided tours are available, offering insights into the science and future of aerospace travel. Additionally, visitors can explore unique attractions in the surrounding town, such as a painted water tank and a polka-dotted bench.
The future is here!!! Final Frontier Tours gives an unbelievable tour of Spaceport America in New Mexico. There are many companies located in this facility setting the pace to horizontal/vertical take off. If you are looking for a unique tour and if space, airplanes, drones and/or technology are of interest, this is a must. Fly into Las Cruces, NM, and connect with Curtis at Final Frontiers Tours. Curtis and Chris were our guides and their knowledge and passion surpassed our expectations and set the stage for an incredible experience! Can’t say enough about the tour we were blessed to experience🤩
Don H — Google review
Nice place to visit , this is my second visit , first time when they first opened, don’t expect staff inside like they had before , the visitor center is running the whole building, staff at visitor center was very nice though, got nice stickers for my visit and purchased a spaceport sticker , worth seeing for free , although I donated a little to visitor center, thank you!
Z — Google review
Some parts are under construction, but still an interesting place for adults and children.
TAWAN P — Google review
A little hard to find but worth going out there. They have tours on weekend but you have get info on line and sign up.
Sheryl B — Google review
We booked the tour for the space center that leaves every Saturday from Truth or Consequences. The visitor's center: Friendly and knowledgeable service with great tips about Truth or Consequences. The Tour: Curtis and Chris gave us an upbeat tour full of many interesting facts; not just about the space center, but about New Mexico as well. These two guys were personable, knowledgeable, intelligent, and went out of their way to make sure we had a good time.
Chris J — Google review
The staff in this center is very helpful, friendly, and will even stay a bit after publicized hours if the tour bus is running late on return so that people may use the restroom. But the 5* is mainly about the Spaceport tour, which is amazing! Highly recommend doing the weekend tour.
Jeff H — Google review
I might give a good review once I can actually find the place. There are absolutely no signs in the city of T or C that will guide you to the visitors center. When we stopped and asked for directions, the "helpful" person at the gas station gave us directions to the spaceport itself, which ended up to be a trip of about 25 miles, eleven cattle guards, a right turn in someone's ranch yard, then a few more miles until we got to the gate, where we were turned around by a bemused guard who informed us that the visitors center was actually back in the city. Trying to get back to the highway, we hit another thirteen cattle guards and ten low water crossings, all but about five miles of it on washboarded dirt road. After another trip through T or C, we still haven't found it, and we're out of time and patience. Let us know when you guys put up some signs.
Bill K — Google review
Haha, I was just reading the post of Bill Knight, from two years ago. Kind of strange that you would post a one star because you clearly were not meant to find it. Seriously, it is within walking distance of everything in this tiny town and I accidentally found it while trying to find a restaurant, “A Little Piece of Heaven”, because it looked like a good parking spot, whilst visiting the Riverbend Hot Springs. Why do you need 100 signs? No “signs” deter the people who are not meant to find it. Signs quickly make an amazing place superficial and used up, like the Green Beach on The Big Island, it is eroding at an exponential rate because of the many disrespectful visitors. I barely recognized Green Sands from 8 years ago, when I was last there. I was unable to go inside because of CoVID 19 but the vibe is amazing so I highly recommend when it does reopen. Do not worry; if you are vibrating at a high enough frequency (not emanating anger, fear, or entitled expectation), it will find you. T or C is on Latitude 33 and is a magical place. I imagine all will open up again in a couple of months but I we shall see. Do be forewarned; a lot of the places in T or C are not updated since CoVID 19 arrived. You kinda just have to go there and see what’s up. Like life not so long ago, think “National Lampoons Trip to Wally World” from back in the day. Have fun!!!

Truth or Consequences Contemporary

Art gallery
Museums
Desert Archaic is a vibrant and unique art gallery located in the lively downtown area of Truth or Consequences. The gallery showcases rotating artists as well as resident anchor artists, offering a diverse range of creative works such as jewelry, mixed media, textiles, and paper mache. Additionally, it serves as a gift shop and occasionally transforms into a cozy listening room for acoustic concerts. The staff is friendly and all the artwork displayed is from local TorC artists.
THIS ART CONTEMPORARY IS A MUST SEE! Kyle and Jeannie are not only fascinating people and outstanding artists, but are always looking for new ways to add to their craft. And their craft IS ON POINT! Kyle's canon of paintings are very unique, captivating the imagination from surreal to hyper real. Jeannie is an actual real life Genie. From live performances to her textile work, the only way to describe her work is beautiful and truly original. Guys, these are REAL artists here. The gallery itself has recently been remodeled giving it a modern yet almost ancient or primordial vibe. Each and every detail of the place has been finished to perfection. Honestly, the floor alone is enough to come and check this place out! I implore everyone to check out their work!
Charley W — Google review
Incredible space, incredible artwork, extremely high-end, and very unique. I was amazed at how beautiful some of the pieces were. I could spend an hour in here appreciating the space like a museum and probably go home with some thing that I will cherish for a lifetime and pass on for generations to come.
M D — Google review
Love this gallery in funky downtown Truth or Consequences. Rotating artists have shows there as well as several anchor artists in residence. Always a fun variety of jewelry, mixed media, textiles, paper mache and what ever else the creative minds there have made up. Just wish they were open more days but...makes it extra special when I am there.
Alice H — Google review
This is a definite must-stop when traveling through Truth or Consequences, NM! By the time you leave this gallery, you will feel like you put your finger on the pulse of the creative life-force that is bubbling in this hot springs-filled town. A friendly atmosphere, filled with one-of-a-kind pieces of curated local TorC art.
Shawn F — Google review
Art Gallery, Gift Shop, sometimes a listening room for acoustic concerts, friendly staff, all local TorC art.. hip gathering place every second Saturday for Art Hop, and just a skip and a jump from the local brewery ! Carole Wheeler Dog Park

Dog park
Nature & Parks
Parks
The Carole Wheeler Dog Park, formerly known as the Carole Wheeler Dog Park, is a popular and centrally located dog park in the city. It offers a serene atmosphere with a refreshing breeze and minimal noise, allowing dogs to enjoy their time off-leash. Some visitors have suggested that more shade shelters should be added to improve the park's amenities. This park is highly regarded by locals and visitors alike as an ideal spot for dog owners to let their pets roam freely.
TorC is dog-friendly, and we enjoy coming here, as do our dogs. This park is small(ish), but lovely and clean. It has separate areas for large and small dogs, as well as single use area where you can bring a young pup. Outside the dog park is a walking trail and a pretty pond. Parking hydrants are a fun touch.
Maja H — Google review
Pretty nice dog park with three fenced areas, some trees and shaded seating. Very glad to find a water spigot there. Only complaint is the prickly goat head burs get in the dogs paws. Nice location near town and the river park.
Cassidy — Google review
Well Google, you have the name of the dog park very wrong. It is the Carole Wheeler dog park. You need to add an "e" to Carol and add an "e" and drop an "l" to Wheller. It is the " Carole Wheeler Dog Park". I was cleaning the dog park. Beautiful breeze, peace and quiet except for the happy dogs. I only rated at 4 stars because it needs some more shade shelters.
Carole W — Google review
Very nice space in the large dog park. Bowls for water. People leave toys. Nice benches covered for shade. Near a big park area. Good use of an odd space. Nicely kept.
NLD T — Google review
Very nice dog park. It's rather small, even for the bigger dogs, but it has a water faucet at the entrance, some shade and it's grassy.
Ingo N — Google review
I spent some time in this park and liked that there are three separate pens. Most of the owners were friendly and attentive to clean-up here.
Azoraa T — Google review
Several different runs available for groups or a solitary run. Pond available for kids and seniors fishing on the weekends.
Nathan S — Google review
Unfortunately The upkeep of this park has declined over the past year. Additionally we've taken our dogs there and had someone yell at our dog when it was barking telling it to shut up. This caused us to avoid going to the dog park when this individual was there and to make matters worse he wasn't even from our state.

Geronimo Springs Museum

Mentioned on
10 lists
Museum
History Museums
Geronimo Springs Museum, located in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, is a must-visit venue for those interested in the area's rich history. The museum showcases a diverse collection of artifacts including fossils, arrowheads, and items from the Apache culture. Visitors can explore a recreated miner's cabin and learn about New Mexico's early mining industry. The museum also features an impressive display of Southwestern pottery dating back to 200 A.D.
This museum is completely amazing. At first glance it seems very small and humble but inside there is a great expanse of information ranging from fossils, local history, and native history. I've been to a lot of museums around the world and this humble place is easily one of my favorites. Harold, the docent was great to chat with and very informative. We are so happy we made this stop and explored what it had to offer. The fee to get in is nothing compared to what you get to experience. Definitely a highlight of our trip in New Mexico.
Damian V — Google review
Don't miss this great museum. Although focused on local Sierra County history, various collections tap into the story of the entire state. Don't miss the bunkhouse in the back, the Mimbres pottery, or the Ralph Edwards' television show memorabilia. Huge thanks to the Buhler family for founding this iconic institution.
Jaima C — Google review
This is a very large collection of local American history. It’s also much larger on the inside than the outside leads you to believe. It’s definitely geared to adults and not children, just FYI for families. The collection includes an excellent collection of Indigenous American pottery from thousands of years ago to more recent history. There are cowboy artifacts, American Indian artifacts, lots of pictures and articles from local towns over the years. Then, of course, there is an entire room dedicated to The Name Change history and Ralph Edwards - the host of Truth or Consequences. It can take an hour or more depending on how in-depth you want to get with everything available. $6 to get in as of 05/25, and worth it.
Bradford C — Google review
This museum houses proof of a rich history of this area. From the city's beginnings, the age of Geronimo, the major commercial efforts of the area, and the Hollywood influence of this town, the exhibits are sure to hold everyone's interest. It's a pretty nice-sized museum with meandering rooms and even an added log cabin. My favorites are the Geronimo exhibits, the dresses from pageant winners, and the log cabin!
Cindy R — Google review
A hidden gem of a museum with many impressive collections, including pottery and projectile points, rocks and gems, frontier artifacts and clothing, and detailed exhibits about local history. A wonderful stop if you have some time in T or C. General admission is $6.
Eric W — Google review
A great museum packed with history. Everything you could possibly want to know about the area and history from the ancients to the present. The man at the front desk was very personable and had many of his own stories.
Laura B — Google review
Hearing “Well get to them later” with a wave away as first-time visitors to this museum. I can’t say there are any customer service skills. The worker was more interested in talking with what seemed like locals than giving 2 guests walking in a greeting. We went to have a nice, educational experience and ended up taking a quick look around and leaving SUPER RUDE experience.

Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort

Mentioned on

Golf course
Sierra Del Rio Golf Course at Turtleback Mountain Resort is a visually stunning facility and golf course located in Elephant Butte, New Mexico. It offers a challenging course with breathtaking views of its beautiful surroundings. Recognized as one of the top 10 golf courses in the state by Golf Digest, it's an ideal place to host large events or enjoy a round of golf with friends.
Grayson was the most welcoming. Daniel was incredibly attentive. The food was incredible, very much like being at a private country club. We really enjoyed our experience!
Consuela O — Google review
Outstanding golf course in the middle of nowhere. Every staff person that I spoke with including the grounds maintenance guys out on the course we're all super friendly. Of course was in great shape. Nice size driving range and putting green to warm up on. Price is very affordable for such a nice course. Hard to believe that you're basically surrounded by the New Mexico desert and then you've got this beautiful green lush Golf course. Definitely recommend playing this course
Milton H — Google review
Fun course with some big elevation changes and a high slope. Great condition in July 2025. I would come back to play again. Interesting layout, never boring. Hole number three is a tough one. Favorite holes were 14 and 16. Course felt like a mix of Red Hawk and Cochiti. Good carts and service. The city of truth or consequences down the road is a cool stop with hot springs
John L — Google review
Played here on October 19, 2025. The course was in phenomenal shape. The greens were immaculate, and probably rolling at a 11.5 or 12. Staff is extremely friendly, and they maintain a very low key vibe. Even though it's a a bit of a trek from El Paso we have another round booked this weekend. Highly recommend.
Jonathan S — Google review
Blair was incredible! We sat at the bar and he went above and beyond taking care of us. Gave us all the insights for our time in Truth or Consequences--like a virtual tour guide. We split a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with Hatch Chili's on it--Excellent!
Kirby S — Google review
Food was great as per usual since the place opened under new ownership. Had an amazing seared tuna and a yummy pecan salad (+ chicken). Our favorite part of the entire experience was Krystal, our bartender. She is a bartenders bartender. The only thing better than her cocktails is her contagious smile and can do attitude! A++
Dennis G — Google review
HIDDEN GEM! This course was immaculate and very scenic. Played in a scramble and got paired with some locals. Besides the -19 under card turned in from some team 🤦🏻, I’d recommend making the trip out to see it for yourself. Shoutout to Timothy, Eli, the PGA Pro’s, and the group for the warm welcome.
Tony T — Google review
It has been a number of years since I played at Sierra del Rio Golf Course. Nine of us went down this week to play the course and see the renovations of the club house and country club. The changes and devotion to the course and facilities are visibly evident everywhere. Starting with your arrival at the clubhouse. We were greeted by professional golf staff, friendly and dedicated to making our outings wonderful. The price is the best value in the state, maybe the country. Our golfing was challenging given the scenery of the course. Every direction had scenic views, and the course is well maintained. Not even a broken tee on the tee boxes. The management and owners will make this facility one of the best in the country. Pretty close right now. A little rain and a few more cuttings and it will top the charts. After golf, we had dinner in the lounge. Staff and the environment were great. The food was outstanding. The next day, we played and had a late lunch on the patio. The patio is all new with more scenery highlights. Lunch was super. The food was so good we returned for dinner that evening at the country club. Every meal was spectacular. The staff was attentive and friendly. Our entire group found the facility as one of the best. In fact, we ran into a number of other friends from Albuquerque at the course and they had the same evaluations as we do. They have added Sierra de Rio to their golf play, and restaurant list.

A little store packed with household antiques of the mining era plus a most knowledgeable docent to share all that she had learned! Easy to reach and well worth the visit! Airbnb cabins available for rent as well as a few RV spots. We will return for a weekend soon!

Visiting Chloride is like time travelling to the 1800s. The tiny town is amazingly well preserved, complete with a bank/cafe, a museum, an art gallery, several pioneer cabins and silver mining equipment on display. We had a fun guided tour with the town's gracious host, Kristin. You can have a full experience by renting one of the three cabins to stay in overnight, or use one of 5 RV spots. Well behaved pets are welcome. The town borders Gila National Forest and the nearby town of Winston has a well stocked general store and a gas station. The town is looking for a couple folks to reopen the cafe, accommodations are provided so if you are looking for a great adventure this is it!
Maja H — Google review
We were delighted to be provided with a free guided tour on arrival. The general store was an amazing time capsule of the period when the last proprietors literally closed the doors and left. For those interested in an escape to a quiet, rustic place near a National Park, would recommend a detour off the beaten path to visit or stay in Chloride.

The town store was fantastic - like walking into the 1918 mid silver-rush. The towns national forest is also known as The Hanging Tree. So glad we went and enjoyed a few hours hearing the towns historic stories & feeling like it's 1900. The host (wish I got her name) was amazing and taught us alot about this cute town. They even had a small RV park. Thank you for being amazing. The Baileys @CoveredRVwagon

Wonderful piece of history, basically a life sized time capsule. Amazing how an "armed neighborhood watch" protected the site from looters and robbers for 70 years in this remote location. The curators are exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly. FYI My photos are false-color infrared.

The drive to check out the museum was stunning. The topography was fascinating. The museum itself is delightful. Make sure you donate to this worthy project.

What a treat! Totally worth the effort to visit the town. The store was fascinating and our tour guide was knowledgeable of everything on display and more. My family is descended from a US Army captain that served the area in the 1870s. They displayed some items pertaining to him which made this a personal experience for my family. Go visit this unique place if you are traveling through the area.

Frank was very pleasant and professional handingly 5 excited children. They all caught their own fish and reeled it up themselves. It was way more exciting than they imagined and easy too! The boat ride was fun. They would love to do it again. It was interesting see him cut it for us! Great fishing only 1hr and 45 minutes away!

A full service outfitter, all the way! Frank made sure that my husband’s birthday was unforgettable! Caught more fish than we could have imagined and we felt like we’d made a lifetime friend! He is so knowledgeable and his boat is totally equipped! We’ll be back and bring more of the family! Don’t forget to ask Frank for his recipes, he’s got some great ones! Here’s one for you , Frank Heavenly Bass 2 lbs fish fillet, drizzle lemon juice over them on a broiler pan. Broil about 5 minutes, cover with blended 1/4 c butter, 1/4 c Mayo, 1/4 Parmesan cheese and broil another 2 minutes.

My husband and I went on a fishing trip with Frank. From the time we booked it until we were finished it was an amazing experience. Very polite and educational. We got to relax the whole trip. He even cleaned and filleted our fish. We will definitely book another fishing trip!

We are local and like to take advantage of all the great local resources when we can -- what a pleasure it was to experience Elephant Butte fishing with Frank! He is a total professional and very down to earth, was very patient with my 5 yr old who talked his ear off and practically sat on his shoulder while he cleaned our catch. My son and I learned a lot about fishing from him, plus some recipe ideas for the 20-30 white bass we caught. He also brought his very sweet, mellow dog, Catch. All in all, just so great - thank you Frank!

The fishing highlight of my very long life! A+++ and higher experience. Our guide Frank made everything perfect! We caught our limits, he filleted them for us, and entertained us all day long with his humor and professional story telling skills. Not a single vulgar or in appropriate word ever left this gentleman’s lips. I can go on all day. Thank you so much Frank for me birthday extra special and for taking such good care of my Becky and me! Hope to see you real soon, my brother!!! 🎣❤️❤️🎣

Frank is awesome. Very knowledgeable. Took us out and taught us how to get them big white bass and wallyes. He then cleaned and filleted our fish. Awesome experience. If I could give this guy 10 stars I would.

Winston General Store, located in Winston, New Mexico, is a well-stocked general store that offers a variety of products and services. It is open 7 days a week and provides fuel, basic groceries, hot coffee, to-go barbecue sandwiches, and showers. The store also features a gift shop with local craftsman's wares and has a generous selection of rifles, ammunition, hunting gear, and camping supplies.
This was an unexpected gem. We were tired and cold after a long mountain bike ride. Here we found hot food and drink and a place to sit by the warm stove. Not many of the general stores left. This was the real deal with a surprising large selection of everything from guns to ice-cream

Old School General Store with an outstanding inventory for its modest size. Seems like they have at least one of everything for the camping hunter! Staff was extremely helpful and good natured. Excellent grocery choices, too. I'll definitely be back when I visit the area.

This is an awesome store located way out in Winston, New Mexico. You can get everything from here including gas, groceries, gifts, you can borrow their phone if you cant get your cell to work, even a hot shower and so much more. You can even get a great homemade pulled pork sandwich any day of the week all day every day! I stop in this store at least once every other month just for a hot pulled pork sandwich and to look in their gift shop in the back!
Tiffiny A — Google review
Well stocked general store in the boonies. Generous selection of rifles as well as ammunition and other hunting gear. Gas and diesel prices are very reasonable for the remote location. They stock plenty of local craftsman's wares and they also have showers available. The customer service is worth the drive up the mountain!
Kermit D — Google review
Small store with very friendly service and a great variety of goods and supplies for small town. Big bonus being the only store I've visited with big game storage, showers, and hunting supplies. Friends and and I visit every time we hunt anywhere near Winston or pass through.

This place is a must-visit. From food to camping and mountain gear. Made me think how things were a 150 years ago, this would have been a trading post out here. Perfect location for a supply store. And honest respectable people. No outrageous prices here (like some middle of nowhere stores do in NM, and... for their own reasons of extra expenses I do understand). Be sure to ask directions to the local hot food vendor around the corner. More Great People, making burgers, tacos, fries, and shakes. (Doughnuts n coffee too)

Sports Adventure/Paparoni's Pizzeria offers an outstanding boat rental service that provides a fantastic experience for customers and their families. The employees, ranging from the cashiers to the dock workers, were friendly and welcoming. The entire establishment, including the store, dock, and surrounding areas, was well-maintained and spotless. Their pizza had a distinct flavor that was delicious. The pricing was reasonable and the services provided were equally satisfying.
Rented a pontoon boat. Quality service from friendly staff. Had me in the water quickly at the cheapest price around. Really enjoyed our trip. No issues. Also had a vintage slush puppy machine that smashed me with some nostalgic emotions. Give it a try!
Paul J — Google review
Went in not knowing what to except! We knew we wanted to rent a jet ski but had no reservation so its first come serve. FYI you can't reserve anything if you plan to rent for 1 or 2 hours. They were very busy but handled it well and the shop seemed like it just had a kick back feel to it. I thought we'd have no room for anything and couldn't take things we didn't want to get wet but I was wrong. Jet ski can hold some items and even important things such as keys and phones. The guys who go over the equipment with you before hand were young but very patient and showed a lot of knowledge about the rentals. They did not miss one step at going over general instructions and safety rules. Gas was a little pricey for riding for 2 hours but it's all worth it. Also. After renting you get 20% your next rental in the same summer as long as its not a Saturday or major holiday. SWEEET

My family and I had an absolutely amazing experience. The staff was very friendly and welcoming from the cashiers to the dock workers and everyone in between. The store, dock, and surrounding areas were very clean. The pizza was excellent and definitely had its own unique taste. The pricing was fair and the services equally pleasing. We rented a Jet Ski for a few hours which ran very well and the staff seemed to take pride in their equipment and trade. The staff was also extremely knowledgeable but willing to share that knowledge. All around it was an awesome experience and I would highly recommend all services at this Marina.

Rented a Bentley Pontoon with my family yesterday (like I always do every year from these guys). They have always been very professional and offer exceptional value. Monty helped us yesterday and provided us with excellent and professional service. He thoroughly explained the safety briefing and was extremely helpful. The store was stocked full of great equipment and the boat was in excellent shape. My only regret is not buying a slice of pizza from their store, because we brought food. Definitely gonna try the pizza next time I go, because it smelled yummy. Anyway, these are great people offering a wonderful service. Highly recommend them.

We rented the nicer pontoon boat for 6 hours and although it could've used a bigger engine we were satisfied with its quality and their service. We also had lunch here and have to admit their pizza is pretty good. Overall, we'd repeat this experience but with a more powerful boat to tube behind.

My family and I loved our experience. We were educated on the boat we had and all the staff was friendly. We're just sorry that we didn't go earlier because the boating season is going to be cut short due to not enough water in the lake.

Elephant Butte Lake State Park is a stunning destination that boasts New Mexico's largest lake, offering an array of recreational activities for outdoor enthusiasts. With over 200 miles of picturesque shoreline, visitors can indulge in boating, jet skiing, and paddleboarding while enjoying the serene beauty of the landscape. Fishing aficionados will find plenty to catch here, including bass, catfish, and walleye.
Was not expecting just how huge this lake was, the sand caught me off guard and really added to the feel of a beach more so a lake. Great to paddle board , star glaze , or just enjoy the sound of the water. 10/10 would recommend. Just be careful if you don’t have a 4x4 , you must follow the hard paths , otherwise risk getting stuck in more deeper or softer sand!

Very unique state park on a reservoir. Nice park, clean bathrooms, just not the type of environment we enjoy. Very little trees, lots of wind in the afternoon, hot in May. Cute small towns near by. Sites are pretty big. If you like very dry weather and environments, you will like this campground. Very peaceful.

Water level is low but we were able to paddle board and enjoy the afternoon. You are able to borrow a life jacket for the day at the entrance. 10.00 fee if you are not a N.M resident

Elephant Butte is surrounded by picturesque views of mountains. Multiple inlets offer exploration on and off land. Unfortunately, the water continues to recede but still allows for boating activities.

This is a great place for camping and recreation. Pull your camper right down to the waters edge and enjoy some time with your friends!
Gary K — Google review
We had such a great weekend here! I would say the only negative was some of the people. They take up A LOT of space and don't really let you sit by the water. It was just me and 2 of my boys. One small umbrella and a cooler. On the bright side....some other people saw what was happening and not only did they not mind us sitting next to them but they offered us food and more shade. I was incredibly humbled! The water was warm, and my boys truly truly enjoyed themselves.

Fort Craig Historic Site

It's a drive to get to Fort Craig. The road is gravel. Your vehicle must have good treads. Also, have cold water, walking shoes, sunglasses, an umbrella, sunscreen, and snacks. Finally, to see the Fort ,you gotta be here 8am at least. It gets hot quick here. That was my experience at the Fort when I went there with my family.
Josephina' N — Google review
Amazing history, 4 mile dirt road keeps the site more pristine, well worth the trip. Signage around the fort is very informative and visitor center staff was an excellent resource
Sarah A — Google review
Jeff, in the Visitor Center, shared an amazing amount of knowledge concerning the history of Fort Craig in a comfortable, air conditioned, well-stocked gift shop. Previous caretakers created a layout of the original Fort; self-guided tour on level gravel path. Restroom facilities available.
Sharon C — Google review
The volunteer at visitor's center was very knowledgeable about the area and the history. This place was larger than we expected. Numerous ruins. There is nice clean bathroom and there are a few picnic areas.
Heather M — Google review
Great place to visit especially if you visited the wildlife refuge nearby as well. We did both in a day. The man who manages this site was very informative. There isn't as much to see as there is at Fort Union, but it's still an experience in itself. They have stamps here for your NPS passport! A great chance to get a rare one! The final 5 miles to the site are on a dirt road so be prepared for that!
Amanda R — Google review
Don't miss this trip down history lane. Great as a stand- alone visit, but stopped here on the way to Bosque del Apache. Lots of info provided by placards throughout and by over the top helpful visitor center and park host Mark, whose Mother, it turns out, was instrumental in getting the Fort established as a landmark. Her accomplishments honored on a sign at the start of the fort tour trail. FYI visitor center is closed monday and tuesday.
Larry M — Google review
Takes a bit of a drive to get to it on a gravel road but definitely worth a stop. The ruins are pretty cool and they have signs posted along the trail explaining the different spots. There's a good chance you'll have the place to yourself.

Well worth the effort. Combined our NM trip with re watching Oppenheimer movie, a trip to Los Alamos NHP and National Nuclear Museum in Albuquerque. Arrive early. Suggest going to Souvenir Stand, then McDonald House , as bus lines get long ended with a visit to the Trinity Site. They only do the open house 1x a year now, in October fyi
Pamela Z — Google review
I went while on a group trip, we had a great time touring the site and the McDonald ranch house. Our guide, Jen was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Serena — Google review
Trinity Site in New Mexico is a historically significant location, marking the site of the first atomic bomb detonation on July 16, 1945. Located within the White Sands Missile Range, it offers a rare glimpse into a pivotal moment in history and the dawn of the nuclear age. Visitors can explore the remains of the test site, including the concrete slab where the explosion occurred and the Trinity monument, which commemorates this groundbreaking event. The site is open to the public twice a year, in April and October, and provides an educational experience through informative displays and guided tours. The vast, stark desert landscape surrounding Trinity Site adds to its somber and contemplative atmosphere, making it a powerful place for reflection on the profound impact of scientific advancements on humanity. Facilities are minimal, so visitors should come prepared with water, sun protection, and appropriate clothing. Overall, Trinity Site is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, science buffs, and those interested in understanding the complex legacy of nuclear technology. Its unique combination of scientific achievement and historical gravity makes it a compelling destination that leaves a lasting impression.

Me and my family came for a visit and it was SO FUN! we bathed in the sun so much but I found the a really good tan until about July 16th we saw a big flash of light and we got instantly tanned as if god answered are weird prayers! Only downside was that we look like gouls and don't have noses but I'm sure it's just a side effect, plus I got this cool pic of a cloud I saw :) there's also a pic on there of me but it's old
Jenson B — Google review
Went last October for the public day. We flew into Albuquerque, drove down to the site, and slept in the car outside of the gate for the night so we could be in line early. Got in line, drove the road to the site with all others there for the 2 days out of the year it is open to public. The military has it down to the parking, bussing people to the ranch and the food and vendor location. I am personally not into history like my husband, but it was nice to see once in my life.
Jodi J — Google review
Site is only open 1 day a year on the 3rd Saturday in October. Free and no tickets to purchase, just make sure you arrive early...we arrived an hour before the gates opened and had over 50 cars ahead of us. By the time 8am arrived the cars were backed up to the road...about 5 miles. The site itself is a bit of a drive from the gates but the roads are good. They also have a shuttle that takes you to the McDonald house where the bomb was completed. Lots of historic pictures and information surround both the site and the house. We went with a Geiger counter which showed the radiation as pretty low, with the highest readings away from the obelisk a few feet.
Rebecca B — Google review
I have had the chance to visit this site a few times. Visiting the Trinity Site was a sobering experience. As the location of the world’s first atomic bomb test, it holds immense historical significance. The entire world changed on that July morning. You can feel the weight of the events that took place here. The site is only open to the public twice a year. We showed up to the Stallion Gate at 5 am and were 4th in line. We had a short wait for the gates to be opened. We were greeted by friendly and efficient security staff. The site itself is marked by an obelisk at ground zero, surrounded by historical photos and information. The shuttle bus to the McDonald ranch house, where Oppenheimer and other scientists observed the test, was a highlight. Many people are searching for Trinitite, the green glass mineral formed from the heat of the explosion on the desert sand. There is none left and it is illegal to remove it from the site. We sparked a lot of interest with a Geiger counter we brought with us. Be prepared for long lines and crowds, especially with the increased interest following the release of the movie Oppenheimer.

Sights & Landmarks
Mostly great but There's open mineshafts. I was worried the faceless lady would push me in or somwthing when I wasn't looking. Also there's real ghosts. Maybe one of the only places you can still see them. Not reccomended for kids.
Bingus B — Google review
Obviously, the mine is CLOSED and is on private property. That being said, if there's a way to visit and experience the mine, take it!
Scott A — Google review
Start at the converted train depot library/museum in Magdalena. It'll fill you in on the history and eventual abandonment of Kelly. Look through the clippings displayed as a book. There's map in there and lot of fascinating history. As a place to explore, Kelly was fascinating. While most of the town is gone, key pieces of equipment remain., especially if you follow the trail to the top. Incredible views of the green valley and the lush greenery pepper the old heavily rutted trail to the highest mine. The cemetary next to the old church is not in good shape but fascinating reminder of these people's lives. A brief comment note on another reviews mention of the ghost town in Brody, Ca. Brody is literally one in a million with entire households still intact. On a scale of "razed rubble with random cans" as a 1 and Brody as a 10, Kelly would sit very comfortably at solid 7. 8 If you're able to do the full hike. Kelly is frequently overlooked in the tourist droves that flood New Mexico. This was fascinating, beautiful place.
Jason P — Google review
Extremely fun place to hike and explore around! A lot of abandoned mines that’s for sure! If you love history give this place a go! Beautiful surrounding mountains and views with a lot of hiking opportunities and a smell town just to the west! Do your research before you and learn about the Kelly’s before you actually go there makes the experience even better!
Troy F — Google review
Very cool place to check out! There's lots of forest roads around the town but most just turn into dead ends because of private property. If you like to hike though I'd say it's definitely worth coming out here and camping out.
WINSLEEZ — Google review
I love this place. My friends and I did a paranormal investigation here at night. It sure is very creepy at night, which was when we started the investigation. Well during the investigation, we saw eyes staring back at us from the tree line. Well it turned out to be mountain lion cubs and the mama lion was creeping back and forth ready to attack. So be careful if you go out here at night. BE AWARE OF MOUNTAIN LIONS

This guy was awesome! We showed up looking for info on what we could do in the area and he had suggestions, numbers, and real details about where we were going. And an interesting curio shop as well. Also, the whole family was impressed by his cat little-feather (her tail swooshes out like feathers). Super interesting and quirky.

Awesome! Worth the trip! Super nice owner with one of the biggest smiles and kindest vibes in NM. Great Native American jewelry, with reasonable prices and easy to work with. If you stop by and the sign says "open" yet the door is locked with a sign on the door that says "ring the door bell", just be sure to hold the button down for a while until you hear it sound.

I happened to pass thru Magdalena early April this year (2021) and decided to stop at this interesting little Trading Post that caught my eye. It wasn’t until I went inside, when I found out it was the Visitor Center too. They sell a variety of interesting things and some real nice jewelry. The gentleman inside was super nice and super interesting. We got to talking and I asked a lot of questions. He was a wealth of knowledge about Route 60 and the town. I could have stayed for hours, his cat was amusing too. He was very proud of the town and Route 60 history. I learned than Route 60 was established Long before Route 66. I also learned that in 1909 Joe Hilton, cousin to Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotel fame built his first house right there in town. Definitely stop and talk with him and take in the Old West History Of The Town. I certainly will stop in again next time I’m out that way ! ! !

I'm heading back here. It's a very special shop, run by a very special man, and if you get a chance, stop by. You can tell 'em "PapaJoe sent yah!" Ask for the story of that unique blue stone you'll find there. He'll also share the tale of Route 60. If there were 6 stars, I would have given them here.

While traveling in Socorro, New Mexico, a woman needed ammunition and discovered Harold's Southwestern Gifts online. She called and inquired about the availability of 40mm bullets. The person who answered confirmed that they indeed had them, displaying enthusiasm for their well-stocked store. The woman appreciated the friendly nature of the conversation and encouraged others to support this local business before it disappears, as she believes it contributes positively to the local economy.
They have ALOooT of stuff! Very friendly too. Pottery, clothes, jewelry, books, native merchandise, fishing and hunting supplies, souvenirs...and the list goes on. Good prices. Enjoyed talking to one of the owners. She was very nice and helpful. Will definitely be visiting again soon!

My favorite store in Soccoro, they have so many wonderful gifts for every occasion and for home decor, we definitely will be back

I was so excited to get Pinon coffee and a toast shirt.

Harold is a local legend. The variety of necessities, knick knacks, and local Southwestern gifts is impressive. This is a proper general store with everything you could imagine. Recent reviewers need to get over themselves and be willing to use a little hand sanitizer, the owners have the right to refuse service to selfish snowflakes.

Mask Karen wouldn't let us in the store as most other stores around town realize the pandemic is over. Everyone who wants to be vaxed is. Those who aren't don't care. Nice that they want to try to protect everyone who doesn't care if they are protected, but the virtue signaling is not appealing. Go a mile up the road and on the other side is San Miguel Pottery. Nice retired man without a single mask sign who doesn't care and will let you in to buy things. Never stopping by this place again. Sending everyone I know to San Miguel. BTW...I am allowed to leave a review as I did try to go there. Yelling at people at the door to obey your commands is never a good policy for any store. Only medical facilities really have this right. If your health is really that fragile, perhaps not being in a business where you interact with others is a better choice.

Extremely rude and demeaning owners. I’ve never been treated so poorly in a gift shop before and it has happened multiple times. I’m not sure how they stay open. I highly recommend going into other gift shops around town where you are greeted kindly and allowed to enjoy your shopping experience.

so ..my wife was traveling through Socorro NM and needed some bullets. i got on the computer and found this place. then I called and asked the guy that answered if he had some 40mm ? . He said " of course i do" like saying : what kind of store do you think i am running here. LOOOVE this guy , my type of people. !!! . Please stop by and sustain the local economy, is worth it before it disappears.

...lots of 'souvenir' type 'stuff'. The real joy for us was the area syrups and spices. We created gift baskets for the holidays for our northeastern family. Lots of concrete and pebble garden art...need to check that out come spring.

Brewery
Capitol Bar & Brewery is a beloved gem nestled in the heart of Socorro, New Mexico. This vibrant establishment not only brews its own beer but also serves as a lively gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. With an inviting atmosphere that’s both bright and clean, it offers a fantastic selection of craft beers, including their popular Jailbreak IPA, known for its refreshing citrus notes.
My go-to place at night in Socorro. An always cool crowd and friendly staff set in an old, beautiful bar. The outside patio is a charmer in warm weather. UPDATE: Oct.26.2024: Stopped in again for a World Series watch. Foodwise, I had a delicious Socorro Dog. A bit spicy-hot, however so tasty and huge that it filled me up and went perfectly with some brew. Great soundtrack, cool wait staff, wonderful ambiance.

Functions as a café in the morning! Solid coffee (would recommend trying the butterscotch), plentiful and atmospheric seating both inside and outside, relaxed environment, and a selection of pastries (includes croissants, danishes, and/or pies) make it a great place to slow down and enjoy a free morning. They keep flyers up for events at the bar and around Socorro, which I've found helpful for getting more involved in the community. All the coffee places in town have something to their credit, but this is my favorite overall!

We are back in town and once again visiting The Cap! Always a fun time with good beer and great service, thanks to Hazel! Even though things got very busy she managed things professionally and efficiently. She was so smooth she almost made things look easy. This place was a big part of our past and we are glad it is now part of our present. We hope the Cap continues to be a big part of Socorro as it has always been.

This place was amazing. The people were so kind and welcoming, the drinks were very reasonably priced, and the atmosphere was inviting. We wanted to stay there all night. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone visiting Socorro NM

Great bar ! Second time at EMRTC, bartenders were the best, can't remember their names. Got there on a Sunday, went right there after checking in, really good beers. Went back for more mid-week, same bartender, talked some more, drank some too ! Another course at NMT in January, back to the Cap... I Love this Place !

New Mexico Tech Golf Course in Central New Mexico is a hidden gem for golfers seeking a refreshing change. The course boasts well-maintained greens and lush fairways, all at an affordable price. It offers a tranquil escape from the city, with attentive and enthusiastic staff members. Located just an hour's drive from Albuquerque, this exceptional course provides an enjoyable experience for both avid golfers and those looking to relax.
Love this course so much. This is target golf! Lots of course management required to play well. Lots of interesting holes. The course is in great condition. They have a driving range and 2 practice greens including one you can hit pretty long pitch shots into. Pro shop is well stocked. Folks are nice!! Restaurant is great! And they have a full bar. Plus event venues. This is one of New Mexicos’s best courses!!
Appljaxx — Google review
What a hidden gem of a golf course. I played a lot of golf courses up in Albuquerque but I never knew this was here. Very friendly staff at check in and around the course. Course was in great shape. The fairways had nice grass to hit off of. Greens rolled through and smooth. Couple of risk reward holes. There was one or two holes that had this first timer confused. I didn't know which way the fairway was going so it caught me off guard. Good snack bar with a wide variety of food to choose from. I highly encourage you to play this golf course on the campus of New Mexico tech in the small town of Socorro you will not be disappointed

I first came to Socorro in 2003 for a bomb class at EMRTC, we drove by the course on our way to the range. I always wanted to golf the course and I finally did today! Golfed with a great kid, a student at NMT named Elliott. He was a stick! Helped me navigate the course. This is a great course, in great shape! Definitely recommend playing a round here!!

By far my favorite course to play in New Mexico. Beautiful greens and excellent bar with plenty of food. Service is great and weather is immaculate. Best bang for your buck. $50 a round.

This is an old school university golf course in the middle of Socorro, New Mexico. A little oasis in the desert. When we played last weekend it was in great shape! Short, challenging course with small greens. Mostly parkland style, with a few desert holes. Will definitely go back in the future. Loved it!

I would give it a 4.7 if possible. It's a nice place on the golf course with a great view. Good atmosphere and good service. The hamburger was delicious. Top-notch.

The golf course at New Mexico Tech is a gem. It is the only green patch for miles around. It is a fun course to play that offers a good challenge. The views are great of the school and of M mountain. The course is beautifully manicured and tended to. This is a great asset and Socorro is lucky to enjoy such a high quality course.

My golf league played here 8/24/23 and the course was in great condition. Best I've seen in years of playing it on occasion. Use East Road exit to save yourself 10 minutes. Otherwise you have to drive through the campus at 25mph.

I did not stop by to attend this church. However, I did interrupt my trip briefly to check it out because of its iconic southwestern architecture. You can tell that the building has been lovingly maintained over many years. I would have liked to see the interior but that will have to wait for another trip.

Natural History Museums
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology Mineral Museum is a hidden gem worth visiting, even if you're just passing by. Located near the highway, it boasts an extensive collection of minerals, gems, and crystals. This museum offers reasonable prices starting from $5 for purchasing rocks and minerals. Don't miss the adjacent gift shop which has a wide range of geology-related items carefully curated by the manager.
Absolutely brilliant displays of a wide variety of gems and minerals. For anyone who enjoys looking at multitudes of new and beautiful rocks, this museum is an absolute must-see destination. There were rocks on display from all around the world, with so much information available about their chemical composition, where and when they were mined, and how they are used in different societies. I even splurged and purchased several new crystals to add to my collection. There was a very wide range of prices for different items, which I appreciated.

Incredible number of mineral specimens from all over the world on display...exceptional eye candy. It was so difficult to leave! Entry is free, and the gift shop offers interesting geology books and beautiful jewelry.

This place is a gem, literally! Free admission what ?!?! They have a great assortment of crystals. It's great to see all the crystals you can get from New Mexico and the surrounding regions. They even have 2 gift shops for you to buy crystals for reasonable prices. Def recommend this place !!
Susanna L — Google review
This place holds an impressive collection of various minerals in all shapes and sizes. The specimens are nicely labeled. They are carefully displayed so that you can appreciate the colors and crystals closely enough without the risk of disturbing the specimens.
Penny S — Google review
The most amazing selection of gems and minerals you’ll ever see. Pictures just don’t bring justice to the brilliance or majesty of each piece.
Clay P — Google review
I visited this museum last year while on vacation in New Mexico. I really loved it! All the mineral displays were amazing. I geek out over geology so this was a very enjoyable visit for me. They also have a store and some minerals for sale as well. I bought myself a couple of small minerals to display at home.
Carina J — Google review
What a wonderful place ! Free admission though it would be worth paying for. Excellent, very well displayed, labeled, organized, beautiful collection of rocks, fossils, minerals and gemstones. Hands down the best geology museum I've ever seen ! Thank you so much for providing the public with such an amazing place to visit ! Don't forget to check out the dark room to see the rocks glow ! Was super surprised that we were allowed to take photos too ! Many places will not let you. So very much appreciated the kindness of the staff and the amazing place they have provided.

Its the office of NRAO. VLA is an hour away from the office towards west.

Those who want to visit the actual radio telescope rather than this office building, please take care to search/map "Very Large Array". It is an hour west of Socorro on Highway 60.

Well, we drove to the address given, and it was a shipping building. We even drove through the golf course to see if we could see it from behind, nope, nice golf course. Never did find the Radio Observatory. Disappointed we just continued on our journey.
Janet S — Google review
This is the administrative and scientific center building. The actual antennas are 45 miles west near the intersection of US 60 and New Mexico Highway 52. I don't know why there's pictures of the dishes here. You can't locate sensitive radio receivers in a city.

Quebradas Backcountry Byway

Sights & Landmarks
Scenic Drives
Before I say anything else, let me me tell you: This is not a route you want to travel in your Ford Probe. I read numerous reviews prior to going that said the main trail was passable with any vehicle as long as there were no recent rains. The trail was dry but soft sand and low clearance due to large ruts even challenged my 4WD Pathfinder. If the rental car company hadn’t provided me a free upgrade I may still be stuck on Quebradas, so thank you Budget for the Pathfinder, but I digress. If you’re still reading let me tell you this is worth the trip. The views are unmatched and the serenity is wonderful. My daughter was disappointed by the lack of flowers, but it is a desert and she’s four, so that probably isn’t going to be a disappointment you encounter on your adventure. The entire drive is approx. 25 miles long and there is no way off once you begin, but you can drive at least 20mph comfortably most of the way so it doesn’t have to be a 2-3 hour commitment if you don’t want it to be. There are plenty of places to pull off and hike, so pack accordingly if that’s something you’d like to have the option to do. I personally would have liked to see more animals but the terrain and views are definitely the draw for this location so the free roaming cows will have to suffice. You’ll have a great view of the sunset behind the mountains to the west from almost anywhere on the trail, if you go in the evening. Do your best to be back on the paved road by dark. Dirt roads and UFO’s go hand in hand in this part of New Mexico and that’s the second type of Probe you don’t want on this trail.
Bradley S — Google review
Updated 2021. New Photos and Videos Granted, I only explored the first section. I have plans to survey the entire route, but so far so good. The road is well improved even though it traverses a landscape with many windings and diverse scenes. The first stop features some amazing views and a deep canyon. There's a poorly maintained road into the canyon, but I preferred hiking down. I visited in the Summer and still found plenty of water at the bottom of the canyon. I've posted some pictures below.
D. W — Google review
This is an incredible drive on it's own, but it is really enhanced by a well written guide book called "A Geologic Guide to the Quebradas Back Country Byway" by Peter A Scholle. I found a copy at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology Mineral Museum in Socorro. The guide explains the geology visible from each of the numbered guide posts along the route. Some stops are hard to spot, but the guide provides very accurate distances to each stop. Be sure to set your trip odometer at the beginning and try not to backtrack.
