Nature & Parks
Ferry Beach State Park is a must-visit destination, spanning nearly 120 acres between Saco and Old Orchard Beach. The park offers a pristine sandy beach, perfect for sunbathing and enjoying the ocean breeze. Visitors can also explore walking trails and participate in nature programs. One unique feature of the park is the presence of Tupelo trees not commonly found in this area. Despite slightly pricey parking, the serene and clean environment makes it worth a visit.
Love Love Love this so super clean state park. It's prett small as far as sitting but to walk its absolutely gorgeous. Get there early they open at 10 am. $5 for residents. Bathrooms are always stocked and super clean, Well as clean as out house toilets go lol.

Beach area very nice on a rainy day but the water birds were just enjoying their lunch. The park has nesting g piping lovers around the dunes so be mindful of fenced areas. No dogs on beach during nesting season per beach rules
Stacie D — Google review
Nice trails to stroll, lovely beach, free admission for seniors from Maine, pet friendly trails, dogs not allowed on the beach. Very nice nature center!
Mary G — Google review
In my opinion, one of the best beaches in Maine!!!!!!!! Totally worth it the 20 dollars 7 day pass. It feels like you are in Norway or Finland
Julian M — Google review
A great destination whether you want to go to the beach or do a walk on the trail or just sit and have a picnic
Robert B — Google review
Average beach but the drive through the woods was actually kinda neat. You have to pay to get in (I think only if you’re not from the area? Might be wrong), but there’s free sunscreen and shower to wash the sand off your feet. Lots of space on the beach when I went (admittedly it was kinda cold out). Some seaweed but not a ridiculous amount. I liked the notices about preserving the wildlife, but it was still fun to dig around and see what we could find before burying it back in the hole.
Jason I — Google review
Chill beach from a mesh path going under the road for a short walk through the state park. Use your debit card at the park gate $5 resident, $7 out of state. accessible from bay view road. Outhouse style bathrooms on the back side with a nature walk. Surf is mild, no good for surfers due to the rocky shelf and islands a short distance from shore. Lots of rocks and shells to collect at low tide. There were also a bunch of small neck clams washing up when we were there. Cool plovers running around the surf as well.

Decent walk to beach from parking. Overall a great place. Some walking trails. State Park.

Our family group of 25 had a great time aboard the Songo Queen. The staff from Ryan when we booked the tickets, the captain, and the bartender, all were very personable and helpful. It was a cool day but everyone enjoyed the cruise.

A nice way to spend a couple of hours relaxing on the water. I took the 12pm-2pm trip on a Friday in late August. What I wish I knew in advance: There is food available on the boat but it’s limited: slices of pizza, steamed hot dogs, and I heard there were burgers but I didn’t see anyone ordering or eating them. There were small bags of chips, etc. There was soda, water, and alcoholic drinks. Only one person staffed the bar where all food and drink was sold so there was a wait to get your order. If I go again I would bring my own drinks and sandwiches. I did bring a light jacket and I needed it at times. There are bathrooms on board the boat (none on the dock). The price was reasonable: $35 each for adults. Boarding started a half hour before departure. Also: the FRONT of the boat is butt up to the dock so this is good to know if you want to sit in the front of the boat. We went up to the top deck and were surprised to see that a small number of people took ALL of the seating at the front. The red benches which should have easily accommodated 2 people were all taken up by only 1 person. This was disappointing. Overall, though, it was fun and I would recommend it.

This boat ride is the best! It has such interesting facts. It's so calming and fun. Seeing nature like this is so beautiful. The bar is great and the food is good. Definitely a fun trip. Would come back a million times. Me and my husband are on our honeymoon and had a blast!

A huge thank you to Ryan and Songo River Queen II in Naples, Maine for the incredible VIP treatment! It was a perfect day on beautiful Long Lake, made even more special by the crew's hospitality and top-notch service. The two hour narrated , scenic cruise was the perfect way to enjoy the day. Our grandchildren really enjoyed getting to pilot the boat! Highly recommend this cruise for an awesome experience!
D H — Google review
I honestly feel duped. The website and Google Photos make a big show of the “Songo River Queen II,” but what we actually boarded was its sad little cousin: the “River Princess.” Picture a single-deck boat with a fake paddlewheel, plastic folding chairs, and battered old flea-market tables. It’s more backyard graduation party than river cruise. And funny enough, you’ll find almost no pictures of the “Princess” online. That’s no accident. The onboard commentary? Dull enough to make an audiobook of the phone book sound thrilling. And the “scenery” was basically a slow crawl past the front and back yards of wealthy lakefront homes — punctuated by shirtless, leather-skinned boomers pounding drinks on their party boats. Congratulations, you too can gawk at someone else’s landscaping (and questionable tan lines) for an hour. I booked this as a birthday surprise for my wife, brought our kids, and instead spent the trip silently apologizing. Maybe the “Queen II” delivers something closer to what’s advertised, but the “Princess” was a royal letdown. If your idea of fun is drinking cheap beer in plastic folding chairs while riding what can only be described as the Temu version of a riverboat, you might actually enjoy it. Oh, and snacks? Don’t worry — they’ve got you covered: Swedish Fish. Or… Swedish Fish. For us, it was less “river cruise” and more “River Disaster.” A total waste of time and money.
BJ B — Google review
I have been going to the Motor Booty Affair event on the Songo River Queen II for the past 3 years and it’s always a blast! The crew have always been wonderful, the view is beautiful & that band, well I’d go see them anywhere.

We hosted our Friday night wedding event on the Songo River Queen and it couldn't have been more perfect. The weather was incredible, and Ryan and his team were an absolute dream to work with - flexible, responsive, and so accommodating with every detail. Our guests raved about the experience, from the stunning views to the fun relaxed atmosphere. The drinks were a hit and added to the festive vibe. It set the tone for the whole weekend and gave us memories we’ll cherish forever. Couldn’t recommend more highly!

Prouts Neck Cliff Walk

Scenic Walking Areas
Prouts Neck Cliff Walk is a picturesque hiking location known for its stunning views and ample natural beauty. Situated in a charming area, this trail offers an array of scenic vistas and breathtaking landscapes. With its impressive cliffs and panoramic overlooks, Prouts Neck Cliff Walk provides visitors with the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature's splendor. This popular hiking spot boasts magnificent scenery, including rugged coastlines, lush vegetation, and captivating ocean vistas.
Rode our bikes here, down the trail a bit, and walked the rest of the way. Like others have noted, you cannot park a car here so biking is likely the best option for now. It's a beautiful vista. No amenities.
Darius M — Google review
The Cliff walk is closed indefinitely. Even to locals who live there because the storm in January made several places impassable. A woman died falling there two years ago. It’s a sad loss for all. The black point road is also closed at the inn because the road is literally falling into the sea after the storm. That should be repaired by next year. The town is working on it.
Page R — Google review
We paid to park at the beach, walked the beach to get there, and then were blocked from walking it by an older gentleman. There was an unofficial sign that was laminated that said "path closed today". The man had on a yellow flagging vest on and a clipboard, he told us that it was closed due to erosion. But when we went back to the beach and told the person taking money at the beach, they said they hadn't heard about the erosion, and weren't notified of anything from the police. And from talking to someone else, supposedly the gated community that lives near the cliff walk, doesn't want hikers near their houses. So, we think we were scammed into thinking there were dangerous conditions and this man was just paid to stand there looking official to keep tourists away. There was no official state or police sign, and this person stood in our way and basically threatened us from walking on the path. We tried to walk it on a Saturday.
Danielle B — Google review
This on the cliff walk website: “No bikes or wheeled vehicles are allowed on the Cliff Walk. No unattended bikes are to be left by the entrance area.” So you must walk to this spot from the public beaches or somehow carry your bike with you along the rocky trail.
Sandra S — Google review
There is no public parking, so there is no way to access this trail unless you live in the area, or park at the beach ($9 a person for out of state residents) a mile or two down the road and then hike to the trail.

Beautiful, but you do need to bike to it. No parking!

The Portland Museum of Art, designed by I.M. Pei, is a renowned institution featuring an extensive collection of over 18,000 artworks dating from the 18th century to the present day. The museum boasts specific collections dedicated to American and European art, including paintings by iconic artists such as Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, and Edward Hopper. Visitors can also explore contemporary art exhibitions showcasing works by celebrated artists like Alex Katz and Maine-based artist Aaron T Stephan.
Love this museum. Absolutely gorgeous collection of art pieces spread throughout several indoor galleries. Easy to navigate. Staff are friendly and very knowledgeable. There’s a nearby parking garage about 10 minutes walking distance from this museum. We arrived when museum opened at 10:00 and went through entire museum in about 1.5 to 2 hours. Highly recommend this gem! This museum is very clean and well-maintained. There are public restrooms here as well as a store and cafe. Prices are reasonable; we paid $20 per adult.

A nice place to spend a morning or afternoon in the city. Super cool exhibits along with a historic home. The building itself is quite stunning as well! Could easily spend 1-2 hours here. They have discounts for students, youth, and seniors!

I really enjoyed the Portland Museum of Art. It’s a manageable size, which makes it perfect for a casual visit without getting museum fatigue. The first floor has some real gems, including an impressive Whistler and a few stunning works by Sargent. There are also a few Monets that kind of sneak up on you with how peaceful and luminous they are. The whole space feels welcoming, thoughtfully arranged, and not too crowded. It’s a great little cultural break if you’re spending time in Portland.
Varto B — Google review
This museum is in the heart of beautiful downtown Portland Maine. Great adventures short walk through the city to get there. The staff is just wonderful and very informative. Fabulous works of art. 1 of My favorite was the marble statue of our 18th president Ulysses S Grant. It's a must see for all art lovers. I'm looking forward to going back.
Melissa C — Google review
A classic modern build US art museum, architecturally pleasant and well thought out. Cafe and shop. Not cheap to enter. Art is mainly contemporary or modern. None of it great but little is poor. Some I would call folk art. Much of it is interesting. All labelling is achingly woke, and certainly not objective, as befits Portland's status. Beware of large quantities of street sleepers in the area throughout the day. The locals just pretend they are not there since it conflicts with their perception of the place as a liberal heaven.
Mike S — Google review
The real deal- I had a rainy afternoon before a flight, and finally decided to check this museum out, I had passed by several times before. It's surprisingly well-curated, small enough if you wanted to linger over every display in the place you could, but also something you could enjoy in an hour without feeling like you skipped too much. The surprise for me was that museums in smaller cities can be hit or miss, but this one is easily on par with big city collections (just on a small scale). There's public spaces to linger, a variety of art including some loaned masterworks, fun gallery designs that separate the people moving through so it doesn't feel crowded. Regional artists and themes are also well represented. The museum was founded in the late 1800s, so it's not a newcomer- adding to the pedigree is an affiliated art school, and for us visitors, that also means a cool cafe culture in the immediate area- be sure to get your caffeine fix in the area.
Omar S — Google review
We visited on a late Saturday afternoon in mid-June 2025. We arrived with only about 2 hrs before the museum closed. Parking was a bit tricky but we found street parking about a block away. We were prepared to use our NARM (North American Reciprocal Museum) Membership discount which included 2 free adults and kids under 21 are free. BUT It was the Pride Portland Open House. Free Admission All Day 10-6PM. There had a bunch of decorations inside and outside. They had free candies and other merch too. It was cool and very rainbow. When you walk in there was a security guard and a info table to the left. The museum gift shop was just further back on the left. The gift shop was a fairly large size and had some really cool items for sale. The layout was a little confusing but I've been to way more complicated art museums. This one was actually a little bigger than I thought. We started on the main floor we entered in and went all the way to the back of the museum. There were a number of themed rooms back here. I did get scolded by a staff member about taking photos in a section that didn't allow photos. To be fair the no photography signs were TINY and a little symbol on the info plaques for those pieces. I did complain that no one would see that. They told me it was because those pieces were on loan to the museum and with specific instructions that they are not to be photographed as it would decrease their value. Sounds dumb to me but I'm not the owner. There is a large outdoor sculpture area but you have to enter it from the outside of the museum. The front desk lady said we could walk outside afterwards to visit it but that came to bite us in the butt because with 15 mins before closing we decided to head outside to see it and the gate was locked. We went back inside and the lady said oh, the staff must've locked it up early. Sorry... big eye roll... Anyways we went upstairs and there were 3 floors up and a basement I well I think. The other floors were great with art of all type. There were a ton of very colorful pieces which I thought was very fitting for pride month. There are some awesome sculptures on the top floor included what the kids dubbed "seal torpedo". Also the diamond stag like Harry Potter's Patronus. We did take the elevator up and then the stairs back down which were hilarious as there were tons of birds and seagulls hanging from the ceiling and there was a giant window covered in bird poop. I don't know if that was on purpose or not. All the way in the basement there is a small cafe shop. There was no one there and we were not sure if they were open or not. The bathrooms and water fountains are also in the basement. There weren't very many people in the museum honestly. We only saw 5 or 6 groups the ENTIRE time. Overall it was a great visit and we'd definitely visit again. Especially if the price is FREE. It was nice to have the museum mostly to ourselves. Most the other ones we visited on our road trip was SUPER packed. We sort of saw everything in those 2 hrs we were there (minus the outside sculptures) and had time to shop the gift shop. We did run through pretty quickly. I think 3 hrs would've been perfect and we have 3 kids. One of which is ADHD and we survived.
David L — Google review
If you have 2 hrs to spare, why not stroll through the halls of this museum of art. My favorite painting is one of tattered boats overcoming the elements in the aftermath of the storm. I don't understand the contemporary arts but I guess I don't have the eyes for them.

Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House or Morse-Libby Mansion, is a stunning 19th-century Italian villa-style home located in downtown Portland. Built in 1860 as a summer retreat for a wealthy hotelier, it was designed by architect Henry Austin and boasts an asymmetrical structure with a four-story tower, overhanging eaves, inviting verandas, and ornate windows.
Absolutely go see this gem! Lovingly restored and kept, the workmanship is incredible. The decor is lavish. The docents were all so knowledgeable and friendly; and shared so much interesting information that really brought our visit over the top. We spent about an hour here. Be sure to ask about the restoration of the smoking room; specifically the fabrics. It’s an amazing story.

Nice little historical home in Portland. House was been renovated when we arrived so the front was largely in construction. The inside was well maintained and the docents were very knowledgeable and friendly. It is walkable from most of the hotels downtown and by the harbor which was good as there was only street parking. There is a nice little gift shop as well. 2 friendly mainecoons prowl the ground.
Michael S — Google review
Must do a tour! An eye opening view into the rich history of a home built by true craftsmanship and finished by artists. Each wall is hand painted with exquisitely detail. House is completely furnished with all furnishings original to the house - not the era - original to the home when built. With the price of admission to see the home as well as the furnishings. A very knowledgeable volunteer staff provides in depth information on each room and explains the history of the families which owned it and artistry of the build. Home was built in two years!
Curtis S — Google review
This was a lovely mansion located close to the Old Port. It's standouts were the ceilings and glass inserts on the doors and windows. Its an hour guided tour. The docent was very informative and friendly. We toured the first two floors. The mansion was well kept. It was fun and interesting.

Victoria Mansion blew me away with its incredible Italianate design and rich details. The soaring tower, intricate woodwork, and stained-glass skylight are just breathtaking. Inside, nearly everything is original—furnishings, artwork, and even the heating system! Our guide, Tom, was fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about the mansion’s history. He really brought each room to life. If you're into historic architecture or interior design, this place is a must-see. Truly inspiring.
Sai B — Google review
When searching for things to do in Portland, we came across this. It is definitely worth a visit, as it is a Victorian mansion that you can view almost all of. All of the workers were very knowledgeable and friendly, and it was really neat to be able to see the main floor and the upstairs. The third floor was closed due to fire codes, but we saw a lot more than what you usually get to when you see an old house.
Jeff — Google review
Fantastic experience with a guided tour. Victorian Maine is encapsulated in this mansion where you can learn about the families who lived here and see some beautiful woodwork, plaster work and Victorian housewares and furnishings. The gift shop is well-curated with whimsical gifts. A show stopper is seeing Roofie, one of the loveable mascots 🐈 They are renovating the exterior but it does not affect the tour inside. Small wait in the gift shop for the guided tour to begin, but not a big deal.

There’s something magical about Portland’s Commercial Street and Wharf Street at night. The cobblestone paths, bathed in the warm glow of string lights, make you feel like you’ve stepped into another era. Music drifts softly from tucked-away cafes, mingling with the scent of fresh espresso and the occasional note of cannabis from quirky little spots like Higher Grounds. It’s the kind of place where you wander without a plan—pausing for creamy gelato, lingering over a glass of wine, or settling into a corner to watch the world pass by. The brick buildings hold the city’s maritime history, the flowers spill color over wrought-iron railings, and every bend reveals a cozy nook. Commercial Street and Wharf Street aren’t just places—they’re a vibe. A little romantic, a little bohemian, and absolutely perfect for a night of slow strolling, easy conversation, and making memories you’ll want to relive again and again.

Plenty of options for eating and souvenir shopping. We were expecting a more scenic experience of an actual port .. our bad on that. Basically it's walking up the street and down the street. So we were a little disappointed.

Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse that has been in operation since 1791 and now serves as a navigation museum. It is located on the rocky and picturesque coastline within Ft. Williams Park. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the surrounding area and explore the lighthouse's rich history. Additionally, nearby attractions such as Two Lights State Park offer further opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.
We really enjoyed visiting Portland Head Light, even though it was quite busy when we went. The lighthouse is absolutely stunning — one of the most photographed in the U.S. — and it’s easy to see why. The view over the rocky coastline is just breathtaking. The walking paths around Fort Williams Park are great for exploring and give you plenty of chances to enjoy the landscape and ocean views. There are picnic areas, a small museum in the keeper’s house, and even a couple of food trucks nearby for a quick bite. It’s a place you can easily spend a few hours just walking, taking photos, and soaking in the scenery. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in the Portland area!

The view is just breathtaking. Such a picture perfect place. We got some amazing pictures. Lots of place around for the kids to play. Paid parking We visited first week of October. Make sure to go around sunset and you get amazing photos when the light hits the water.
Nayana M — Google review
I visited the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth on a beautiful Friday evening, and it truly lived up to its reputation as one of Maine’s most breathtaking landmarks. The panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean with waves crashing against the rugged cliffs was absolutely stunning, a perfect spot for photos, quiet reflection, or simply taking in the coastal beauty. Parking was very reasonable at $6 for 2 hours, and there was plenty of space when I arrived. The park closes sharply at 5 PM, so it’s best to plan your visit earlier in the afternoon if you want enough time to explore and enjoy the scenery. Despite being a popular attraction, it wasn’t crowded during my visit, which made it even more peaceful. The historical significance of this lighthouse adds so much character. Built in 1791, it’s the oldest lighthouse in Maine, and you can feel that sense of heritage as you walk around the surrounding Fort Williams Park. The nearby museum gives a quick but insightful peek into its past, from guiding early ships to serving as a symbol of maritime resilience. Overall, Portland Head Light is a must-visit serene, scenic, and rich with history. I walked away feeling both relaxed and inspired, watching the sunset cast a golden glow across the lighthouse and the sea.

Such a wonderful lighthouse with BEAUTIFUL views. There is a small museum with admission only being a couple dollars per person and it is very worth it. So much history there, it’s fascinating. The trails were maintained and plenty of parking. Several food and coffee trucks scattered throughout the grounds as well.

Beautiful views! Parking is plenty, but the light house area is quite a walk from parking - BUT this little spot in the world is so beautiful!! There are food trucks in several areas in this park - we tried the blueberry pie ice cream and the black raspberry ice cream truck near the light house and it was AMAZING! There is a small fee for parking, but the parking meters are easily accessible. There are porta-potties near the parking area.

Iconic, Essential, and Breathtaking Portland Head Light is not just a lighthouse; it is the definitive, iconic experience you must have when visiting Portland. As the "first lighthouse" in the area, its historical significance is palpable, but the real magic is in the sheer, breathtaking beauty of the location. We spent a wonderful afternoon here exploring the grounds, taking photographs, and simply soaking in the atmosphere. The park offers plenty of space to walk around and find the perfect vantage point. If you want to capture the true spirit of coastal Maine and tick off an essential Portland activity, this is the place. It's truly a must-do landmark that lives up to all the hype.

This is a lovely light House outside of Portland in Cape Elizabeth. If you have a car you can drive there and pay for parking. There is a public bus that will take you half way but you will have to walk 45 minutes the rest of the way. Your best bet would be Uber or Lyft. Its not much going ($15) but double the price ($41) returning. It takes about 15 minutes. Reception is very bad there also so it'll take a while for a signal. You may want to reserve an Uber back. It's worth it for the views. There is also a cliff walk and Fort Williams. The Lighthouse museum is $2 located in the Lighthouse keeper's house. They also have a short tour conducted by a park ranger at 11:00am. They have three food trucks located in the park. It should take about 4-5 hours.

We really enjoyed the Portland Head Light. We did go after it was closed but it was still really nice. Even after hours there were a lot of visitors. Honestly, The only constructive criticism I could give would be to extend the hours even another hour to accommodate more people because as I said, there were still a great many coming and going. I had to take pictures looking up, or to avoid the crowds because there were so many people enjoying it. Other than the people, it was very well kept up. Very enjoyable!

Wildlife park
Nature & Parks
Maine Wildlife Park is a serene reserve set in the woods, offering a glimpse of native Maine wildlife. It's not your typical zoo but rather a tranquil place with picnic spots, short trails, and animal enclosures. The park houses around 30 species including bears, moose, lynx, eagles, cougars and beavers that cannot survive in the wild due to injuries or being orphaned. Visitors are impressed by the cleanliness of the park and its well-maintained enclosures.
We really enjoyed seeing all the different animals around the park. The park was clean, the animals were clearly cared for, and you could tell they made it a point to make it a fun but learning experience as well!! All my girls kept talking about on the way home was the albino deer and albino fish(trout?) Super cool! Highly recommend for all ages! Just want to point out that..This park is strictly cash only, but they do have an ATM at the front!

Awesome place! We love all the animals, but the fact that they are rescue animals is even cooler! We had a great visit. First time I have been face to face with a Moose, They are huge! We saw so many animals and birds, bears, you name it. The staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Very well maintained Park, nice, clean and well laid out. Tickets were very reasonable too. If you enjoy wildlife and a nice walk through nature. This place is a must visit!

This place is such a fun and educational experience—we absolutely love it! There's plenty of parking, a convenient snack shack, bathrooms, and tons of picnic tables where you can enjoy your lunch. The animals were either rescued due to injuries or being orphaned, and now they have a safe, loving home. You can really tell they're well cared for and content. It’s a wonderful spot for all ages to learn, explore, and connect with nature!

This Park is AMAZING! We always have a great time when we go. Our recent visit was right around noon and all of the critters just got their lunches. so we were able to see every animal! The small critters eating veggies was the cutest thing ever.
Captain — Google review
Thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Maine Wildlife Park! The animals are here because of being unable to be released into the wild for a variety of reasons. It is not a zoo! It is a place for these animals to live well, in a simulation of their natural life, in a manner that we can visit and learn more about them, engage in a manner not possible in the wild. This said, be prepared to see them sleeping thru the heat of the day! Or not necessarily out and about visible! Here are my tips to get the best views of these wild animals...acting like wild animals should. Be quiet! If you want to see them, and they aren't visible, sit quietly for awhile, often they will show themselves, start poking their heads out if its quiet and you are relaxed/ seated/ non threatening vibe about you. The park is set up well for children with places to sit, snack, rest, inside displays/ educational displays etc. There is a lot of tree shade and structures with shade to get kids and babies out of sun/ heat/ rest etc. There are good, clean, bathrooms as well. The grounds are very nice to walk! Walkways have nice walking surface, shaded by trees, places to sit down. I visited while recovering from serious knee injury/ in a brace. The walking surface and seats were perfect therapy for my knee AND delightful day out! It's suitable for those with mobility challenges and you would be able to get around in a wheel chair or scooter in my opinion. There are snacks and drinks available to buy. Lovely gift shop with lots of tempting items!!!. Ample parking that has tree shade and grassy areas if you want to bring picnic with you and just sit of the grass in the shade. There are also picnic tables under shade inside the park. My impression is week days, even in summer, are not very crowded. I can't speak to weekends, as I've never been on a weekend. Regarding tickets, I just showed up on a weekday and had no problem buying a ticket, no lines etc. However, I think its wise, if you are planning to drive there, have kids and family coordinating for a visit> buy your tickets ahead of time to play it safe. I've never gone on the weekend, guessing best to buy tickets ahead to avoid hassles and disappointments!

This our second year coming here. This year was better than last year. More animals were awake walking around wasn’t very crowded kids under a certain age are free adults I believe are $10. They have a picnic area where they have grills tables etc. they also have a section where the fish are and you can feed them. Just make sure u bring quarters for the fish food.
Linda G — Google review
I joined my son’s school for a field trip, and we had a great time! I love that it’s just a nice walk through the woods and it takes just a couple hours to get through everything if you take your time. The park was so clean! There’s even a little gift shop and a place to grab some snacks. Don’t forget quarters to feed the fish!

I’m from Ca and really wanted to see a moose so we found this awesome wildlife park and got to see one he came really close and was actually laughing. The other animals were fun as well. Saw a porcupine climb the fence of his enclosure and watched the raccoons playing.

Casinos & Gambling
Small casino featuring 24/7 gambling via table games & slot machines, plus a bar & restaurant.
My husband and I absolutely LOVE this casino! Every visit is such a great time from start to finish. The people here are truly amazing—friendly, welcoming, and always make us feel like royalty the moment we walk through the doors. The OxPub is outstanding, offering a wide variety of delicious dishes and a full bar with any drink you could want. The bathrooms are spotless and plentiful, which is always appreciated. We also love the complimentary soda and coffee bar, the snack bar, and the convenient walk-up bar—there’s something for everyone! The casino floor is impressive with a huge selection of slot machines and poker tables, so there’s never a dull moment. If you’re planning to stay a while, the on-site hotel is a must. Be sure to book a suite—it’s absolutely worth it! We can’t recommend this place enough. It’s easily one of our favorite getaways! *They also have several ATM's on site as well as a cage. *

Fun place and very well kept. Small food court has grab and go food that was surprisingly very good and reasonably priced. Got a sausage smothered in peppers and onions for $7. I would give this place 5 stars if I won money....but I didn't so they get 4 stars.

My husband and I stayed at the Hampton inn across the street and wanted to grab a couple of drinks and an appetizer after a long day to relax. We go to the restaurant and get seated in a booth. Both my husband and I ask for an espresso martini with a tiny splash of Baileys. When we received the cocktails we both noticed they were extremely creamy and it practically tasted like a White Russian. We decided to send the cocktails back, which is something we NEVER do and felt terrible for doing. I believe that is what set off the whole experience. We receive our espresso martinis, which tasted great as well as the food. we mentioned we might get another round of drinks. A little bit later the manager comes to our table asking if “anyone told us the alcohol policy” and we politely said no. She said that we can only have one drink every 30 minutes, especially if we’re playing games in the casino. My husband and i weren’t planning on playing any games In the casino. the manager ends up coming back to our table. My husband asked if the alcohol policy was true because we couldn’t find it anywhere on the website or online. The manager immediately started getting defensive/aggressive with us and and said “I know what I’m talking about, I’m the food and beverage manager” etc. etc.. my husband asked in the most polite way because he also works in food and beverage and understands how the work place can go. We decided to just get our check and leave. This was the most discouraging and terrible experience we’ve ever had. I feel like we were treated poorly for asking for a new drink. We also felt like the manager was lying to us About the 1 drink policy every 30 minutes being maine state law. If that is the policy it needs to be posted somewhere and not just told to us by an aggressively upset manager.

After some research I found out this casino has their RTP set somewhere between 89.5-94.5. If you look around for the right slots you have a good chance winning more than you think. Play was fun, none smoking which is very nice. Staff was friendly and helpful. Thanks for the fun time.
Big P — Google review
I absolutely love this casino. The rules on the low limit and high limit blackjack tables are wonderful for the player. The staff was there is wonderful. Some of the dealers were new and slower but not too bad. The slots are fun but table games are where its at. I traveled from out of state and really enjoyed myself. I am looking forward to returning soon. Next time I will have to stay in a room. The only thing that I wasn't a fan of was ID at the door. Good thing I planned to play rated anyways.

We make it up to the casino in Oxford, Me 3-4 times a year. We have a timeshare in Ogunquit which allows us close proximity at only about 1 hour away. The hotel rooms are very nice and clean and the hotel staff are always pleasant and cordial in making reservations. My wife and I are "casino go-ers" so our 2-nite stay rooms are generally "comped" due to play but rates are reasonable. There is a wide variety of the latest slot games and many table game options. There is only one restraunt on the with premises but the food is good in the $25-$40 price range however there are many local restraunts nearby and breakfast at Daddy O's is a must.! We always make fall one of our destination times as the foliage in Sept/Oct is breathtaking.

Maine Beer Company is a popular spot in Freeport, Maine, offering American-style ales in their tasting room with views into the production facility. The brewery also features craft pizza options, including the favorite Ebb Tide pizza with lamb, tomatoes, feta, and more. With a variety of beers on tap and a limited selection of food items like pizza and salads available, it's an excellent place to enjoy drinks and delicious bites.
Nice big place and pet friendly. Was on a ride home from a road trip with my boyfriend and stopped to break up the trip home. The pizzas were really yummy especially the Margarita. They came out reasonably fast and tasted fresh- plus, they cook them in a nice big stove (brick or oven I couldn't really tell). Clean spot overall with indoor 2 level / outdoor one level seating and nice service as well.

A lovely space, great for families, excellent snacks and the pizzas were top tier with a delicious base and well cooked. The highest is clearly the beer. Lunch/Dinner are well known in the beer community, super clean and delicious. If you are travelling past Portland this is a place you really need to visit for a quick refresher. Good merchandise too!

Came to Freeport just for the Maine Beer Company! Greeted warmly and sat at a table with a menu. We ordered up at the bar - boyfriend got a beer tasting and I got a Strawberry Moon cocktail and a pretzel to share! They have a food menu with a good amount & some pizza - we didn’t get but looked good! Indoor (upstairs & downstairs) & outdoor seating, great gift shop (where we picked up a lot of gifts!), spot to grab some beer to bring home in 6 & 12 packs. Really awesome place, can’t wait to come back!

We knew we liked the beer - Lunch is a family favorite - but until today we didn't know how good the food was! Our party of 4 ordered one cheese pizza, one with sausage and Calabrian chiles, plus the veggie "sandwich" and we took leftovers home from everything. The sandwich is a whole Neapolitan style pizza crust cooked and wrapped around an incredible mix of cheese, roasted veggies, and dressed lettuce shreds that is one of the best vegetarian meals I've had in a long time. A Wolfe's Neck IPA complemented everything nicely. The atmosphere is great, staff is friendly, food and drink are unimpeachable, and to top it off they were donating 20% of food sales to a mental health organization. We'll be back soon, and often.

A staple go to while in Freeport. Friendly staff, great atmosphere, and of course, amazing beer. They have their staple Lunch IPA as well as rotating options. Post ride snack is a session IPA which I really enjoyed. Their pizza is delicious as well! They have crumble sausage toppings which I personally love!

Great spot in Freeport!! One of our favorite breweries through our trip to Portland and Bar Harbor! Space was exceptionally clean, beer was the best we had, and pizza was amazing! They also don’t accept tips - only donations which I think is super cool and rare. They have it down pat here, gonna miss it!

A hostess stand greets you when you walk through the doors, with a host or hostess that is required to seat you...in a brewery. Picnic tables are your seating options and a small food menu. Orders must be placed at the bar so get in line. If you want bottles to go, there's another bar set up with a large refrigerator behind it that has the available brews. You stand there and wait for someone to come over. In my case I waited 5 minutes or so and no one came. They delivered our pizza to the table so I went back to the table. Pizza was good, and you can't go wrong with Lunch on tap. When we finished our meal, I went back to the bottled beer spot, two people working it at this time so I placed my order. Lady behind the bar couldn't locate our tab, stated we must have closed it, which we didn't. She eventually found it in their system. Closed our tab and left. On the way out they have a little merch room, just past that is an outdoor patio with seating, and where dogs are allowed. Big parking lot which I am sure fills very fast. 3 stars because this place was cold, physically and from just about each staff we interacted with were indifferent or a tad haughty. Very uncomfortable. I won't go back again. Miss the days before they expanded, when it felt more local, more friendly and you hoped the pretzel lady had made a delivery and there was still a pretzel left to go with your beer. Sometimes bigger is not better. The beer is great though. I'll buy it in the store and skip the brewery.

Nestled in Freeport, Maine, the Freeport Outlets offer a laid-back shopping experience with a variety of outlet stores, craft boutiques, and dining options. The flagship store for LL Bean is a highlight of this outdoor shopping destination. Bargain hunters will delight in the clearance deals offered by various brands like North Face, Patagonia, and Levi's.
Great antique shop has many different types of items. From currency and coins, a basement full of books and lots of lamps, furniture and fixtures of all kinds. Plan on at least two hours if you want to see everything. The staff is wonderful, and if you can’t find it, just ask for help. We had a great time going back in time.

Some great deals... Sometimes. A number not so good. The addition of the Freeport market is great - full of an excellent assortment of craft and art options. Interesting and beautiful from numerous vendors in a single space. Definitely check it out the next time you are in the area.
Jerry H — Google review
Just be aware that the Freeport outlets are a massive tourist trap. If you happen to go to them the week between the major fashion seasons, you can get really decent deals on clothing, but most of the time it's an absolute mess of people walking around the town just buying junk. If you like buying things, you will like it here. I might go maybe two or three times a year. Living here when we are passing through to hopefully get something decent. A lot of the time I come up empty-handed, but when you do have a good day there it is quite nice. Don't sleep on the consignment/ thrift shop nearer the end of the strip. I can't remember the name of it, but both my wife and I have had very good luck finding interesting clothing there. The giant LL Bean campus is also just sort of like one of those things that you can experience. I don't know how else to describe it other than something that would only exist in America. Like if you're the the person who likes to go on pilgrimages to strange landmarks of consumerism like that giant Bass pro shop pyramid, you will probably also like it here.

LL Bean store! Scored some boots. Could have had slippers but trying to stay in budget. Nice walking area but hilly for anyone with health challenges. Clean streets with police presence. Excellent family spot.
Robert R — Google review
The Freeport Outlets have a nice selection of shops and some great deals, especially during seasonal sales. It’s easy to get around, and the downtown Freeport area adds charm to the shopping experience. That said, a few stores had limited stock and some prices weren’t much lower than retail. Still worth a visit if you’re in the area, especially for LL Bean and the walkable atmosphere.
Roy C — Google review
Nice outlet area mixed in with LL Bean’s flagship stores. With the hills it makes it a bit more challenging. It’s not setup like a traditional outlet. It’s in the middle of town so you have to cross back and forth the busy roads.
Gretchen P — Google review
Freeport is an easy place to get around. Things are a little chaotic as LL Bean is going through a major rehab / expansion. There are fewer stores these days, something that is probably more of a reflection of the economy than Freeport itself
David B — Google review
Many"outlets" to tempt the shopper; but dont have high expectations for good deals. Since the flagstaff LLBean was very busy and we were under time constraints, we chose to go to the Bean outlet. I was expecting markdowns of at least 40%. The racks were loaded with so so clothes and the common sale price was 20%. Other company outlets were better priced. The best part of the day was the family sandwich shops located up and down the street. We chose the longest line and it was well worth it. Delicious sandwiches and pizza and ice cream! Unfortunately I lost the name but has been in business over a hundred years! Would I visit again? Probably not.

Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park is a 200-acre natural haven located in Freeport, Maine. Donated to the town 50 years ago, it boasts woodland, estuary, and rocky coast landscapes. The park offers guided nature walks and is renowned for osprey-watching on Googins Island during the summer nesting season. Visitors can explore miles of trails, with the Casco Bay trail being a favorite due to its stunning ocean and island views.
Great park for a hike close to the water. The trails were mostly easy with beautiful scenery along each one. The rocky descent to the water on some of the trails can be tricky but worth it. The park rangers were friendly and excited about their job. One was videoing an osprey nest and enjoyed sharing the video and stories about the young osprey with us. The park was a quick drive from Freeport. There is some construction in the parking areas but it didn’t hinder the enjoyment of the park.

Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park is a fantastic escape into nature just outside of Freeport, Maine. The park offers peaceful, scenic trails through dense woods and along the shore, making it perfect for a leisurely hike or birdwatching. The well-maintained paths are easy to navigate and suitable for all skill levels. There’s plenty of open space to picnic and enjoy stunning views of Casco Bay. I appreciated the cleanliness of the park and the thoughtful signage that enhanced the experience. Free parking is available, which makes access convenient. It’s a perfect spot for anyone looking to unwind in a natural coastal setting.

Absolutely love this place! Free and very limited parking around the bay. There are benches to sit and have quiet moments on the edge of the cliffs. Going down further where the educational working farm is great for group tours and field trips. Going further along our campsites, a place to rent kayaks, bathrooms, a little shop for those forgotten items as well as an ice cream place... All on dirt roads that give the feel of seclusion.

It was a nice stopping place on our way to Acadia. Sort of like a preview of Acadia. It had lots of picnic tables and spots to hang out. The trails were well kept and had lots of information plaques about the birds around the areas. There’s an osprey nest here, and we saw it flew by.

Will definitely be going back!

I experience around Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary has been Great. Thorncrag is one of my favorite places to visit. I visit once a year know matter what Because I had a friend that had died here more then 20 years ago, he was hung, by him self or others, the case was closed and called suicide. Anyway know that the bad news is out the way. Nothing bad has happened since the passing of (Carol Jean Neme), the trails are very safe and they are used everyday. You are going to find so many cool things on the trail system. Take and Hour or take a day. Everything you need, food , water, road access is less then a mile away from Thorncrag. Perfect place for a bird watch, Great place to paint a picture, Go for a Walk, Bike ,Hike, Backpack. How ever you enjoy the trail. Please don't Destroy are Sanctuary, please do carry and trash out and don't hurt or feed the animals. Have a great Time. I'll send photos sometime. Oh yeah and this place is free. There is not tickets....

Fabulous walking trails for the mild-moderate walker. Always a magical, therapeutic forest adventure. There are some cool structures along the yellow trail for the kids to happen upon, or the walking children's story along the white trail. If you just want to enjoy the heart of the forest go red-orange-yellow! Watch out for ticks in the big field-- there is a sign to warn you & it's no joke.

Nice little walking trail with hills. Seen 4 deer and 4 turkey's on my quick visit here. There are benches at different intervals throughout. This trail is also the highest point in Lewiston.

A truly beautiful area, this centennial being the highest point in Lewiston makes it a good hiking playground of easy to moderate difficulty depending on your pace. You will see a range of trails, fields, rock formations, babbling brooks and hilltops with views.
Christopher P — Google review
A lovely place for hiking that's moderately inclined and has wide pathways that easily accommodate for multiple hikers, it's easy to pass hikers coming from the opposite direction without having to stand off to the side. There are numerous interconnected trails that are well marked, easy to navigate, and well kept. There were only a few areas that got a little squishy from the rain, but nothing that wasn't easily avoidable. It's a nice and quiet area with benches throughout for resting and plenty of beautiful sights to capture on camera. I also appreciate that dogs aren't allowed into the sanctuary as oftentimes it makes it harder to pass other people and can make it less tranquil. It also prevents the birds from getting disturbed. Overall, it's a great place to hike that's a step up from easy, flat trails and offers plenty for sightseeing and exploring.

Popham Beach State Park is a rare geological wonder in Maine, featuring a long stretch of sandy beach bordered by the Kennebec and Morse rivers. Visitors can enjoy sunbathing with views of Fox and Wood islands, and even walk to Fox Island during low tide. The park's 529 acres offer ample space for activities like swimming and surfing in the rolling Atlantic waves.
Lovely beach, I have been coming here with my family in the summer since before I could walk and although the beach has changed due to the river and the many storms, it's still a family favorite. I went recently with my family this summer on August 16th. The water was so warm and delightful. I would say it's a very family friendly beach and an overall friendly beach, although you need to watch out for seagulls, they are extremely ruthless at this beach. I had a great time and found lots of cool marine creatures as pictured, a crab and even part of a jellyfish.

Great beach and great Ranger service members. Low cost to enter/park. Actually parking lot that is not all broken like much of maine. Clean beach with soft sand. Good wash/restroom facilities. Good times

Nice beach. Soft sand and lots of space. The cost was a bit much since they charged us per person, instead of per car. So for 3 adults and 4 kids it was 29 bucks. I guess you get charged more if you have guests from out of town. However, after paying the fee we found out the bath houses weren't working. Not fun coming home with sand everywhere. 😕
D L — Google review
The beach is beautiful and huge during low tide. You can walk across the sandbar to Fox Island. If you go right at the entrance to the beach, you can cross the Morse River and access Seawall Beach and skip the 2mi hike (just make sure to get back in time before the tide changes).

Very large expansive beach. Kind of a bit out-of-the-way for any town so you better have all beach gear and water you may need. There are bathroom, facilities, showers and clean water. Don’t be lazy go down the beach a bit to spread out and get a bit more privacy. Very interesting beach and very cold water.

This is a beautiful spot to spend the day with your family! During low tide you can let your kids safely swim and find seashells and sand dollars. As a local if you plan to come in the summer months go early in the day as it gets packed.

Fantastic sandy beach. If you go at low tide, you can walk out into the ocean. Lovely views. There has been quite a bit of erosion- climate change in action.

Had a great visit to the park. Beach and facilities were very clean. We got there around 10:30am and easily found parking. Beach was very family friendly...it had tide pools at low tode which were great for our little one to splash around it. Would definitely recommend and plan to return. They did accept credit card payment for entrance fees. Note: Since this is a state park, it is not dog friendly in summer months.

Museums
The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath offers a captivating experience for visitors of all ages, with 10 acres of galleries and 25 acres of waterfront. The museum preserves the area's rich shipbuilding tradition through hands-on exhibits, paintings, and models that span 400 years of seafaring history. Visitors can explore a working wooden-boat shipyard and learn about maritime artifacts dating back over four centuries. The museum also offers educational programs, lighthouse tours, and nature tours.
Took a cruise to view the Kennebec River lights, Fort Popham, Sequin Light, and all the water in-between. Lovely trip; friendly, knowledgeable crew. Toured the museum grounds before the cruise, which are well worth visiting of themselves. Will be returning.

This place was very neat! We stopped here on out way up the coast of Maine. They offer many different boat tours of the river too. We did the lighthouse sites one and were able to see 6 lighthouses on a 2 hour tour. It was beautiful. While out on the water we got to see some bald eagles, a bald eagle nest, some seals and or course many other forms or wild life. It was well worth the cost, and it really wasn't even exspensive! It also got us free entrance into the museum too. When we return to ME, we plan to stop here again!

Very nice with knowledgeable guides. We bought the full package; museum tour, trolley ride and boat ride. Facilities are nice, staff friendly and seeing the warships was great. The tour of Bath and the town's ship building history was okay. The river tour was not special but the guide had entertaining stories. I went to see the ships which are an impressive feat of manufacturing. These are war machines. Five ships in process in Oct 2025. Cool. So why not five stars? Can't get into the facility, can't get close to the ships. Yes, I understand it's a real factory. Safety, efficiency and secrecy are the priorities. Got it. The view from the river was good, and the narration was strong. I recommend it. But it won't get five stars until you get inside.

We are museum lovers and had a great time visiting this museum. It was very kid friendly, surprisingly so for a museum not explicitly created for kids. It was also super interesting and felt worth the entry price. If we are ever back in Maine we will have to check it out again!

Such a cool museum. The campus is expansive and covers info on ship building. I really liked the buildings to the west with the blacksmith and boat builders working. The Wyoming monument is also incredible!

Excellent. I recommend anyone who has any sense of history visit this exhibition. Also the boat tour is really worth the money. Well run organization! Highly recommend

Great museum. Continuous and term displays are well done, interesting, easy to consume. Loved the "Up T' Camp" display. The Bath Iron Works video is OK. Just makes 5 stars.

This was a cool place to see. Unfortunately tbey close the outdoor displays at 4 and we got there too late to see them. The main building still had some good exhibits but make sure you get there well before 4 to see the whole thing. Going in the off season was nice as the tickets were very affordable.

Gardens
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is a stunning 250-acre waterside destination featuring meticulously maintained gardens, including rose and meditation gardens, as well as natural landscapes and trails. What started as a small conservatory has blossomed into a sprawling 100+ acre garden showcasing the rich diversity of New England's flora. Founded by passionate grandparents, the gardens boast awe-inspiring landscapes crafted by top landscape architects.
This place is huge so bring a good pair of hiking or walking shoes and water. We went almost 4.5 miles and didn't walk all the trails, just heads up. The breeze on The Landing is divine after hiking. Nice clean place. Trails were well maintained and there were places to stop and rest frequently. If you needed to head back and were too tired to walk there are places to sit and wait for a trolley (upwards of 20 min wait). Employees were polite and engaged with visitors often, very patient. It is a long hike and very steep and rough terrain in places. Some areas were fairly easy to get to in a walker or wheelchair and there were scooters for rent. Some areas were not accessible to walkers, wheelchairs, or scooters. Interesting and beautiful place, would go frequently if lived closer. Would have bought more gift shop items if they had sizes larger than XXL in the prints I was interested in. Prefer baggy clothing so not really their issue.
Aurumi — Google review
We had the most amazing day exploring these gardens in July. It was a very warm day and I was definitely sticky by the end of all of the hiking. The grounds were much more expansive than I expected they would be and we easily walked a few miles that day. The flowers were gorgeous and plentiful. We loved searching for the trolls and posing for pictures with them, too. The terrain is rough, rocky for sure in places, and I highly recommend sturdy shoes. There is a trolley that comes by periodically if you need a lift back (as we did), but it's probably 15 minutes between pick ups. The quality of the food at the cafeteria was better than I had dared to hope for. Usually zoos and other similar attractions offer frozen food product. This was fresh and delicious. Their menu rotates regularly, but I greatly enjoyed my curry chicken salad and salad. And the brownie was delicious and huge! The admission fee isn't cheap, but I feel it is well worth it for the experience and great care taken of the grounds. The entrance also has a gift shop with a lot of options for souvenirs to visit on your way out. I highly, highly recommend spending a few hours here. We were here about 3/ 3.5 hours including lunch and that was perfect.

I spent a wonderful afternoon at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and it was easily one of the most beautiful and well-maintained places I’ve visited in Maine. The gardens are vast and thoughtfully designed, with a perfect balance of natural beauty, art installations, and peaceful walking trails surrounded by flowers, trees, and water views. It took me about 2–3 hours to explore comfortably, and I felt like I could have stayed even longer just soaking in the scenery. I booked my tickets online, which came at a discounted rate — definitely worth doing ahead of time since the tours and accessible rides fill up pretty quickly. The entire space is impressively accessible, and I appreciated that wheelchairs are available free of charge for guests who need them. Parking is also free, and the staff were friendly and attentive from the moment I arrived. This place feels magical, especially with the mix of themed gardens, sculptures, and peaceful outlooks over the water. Whether you’re a plant lover, a photographer, or just looking for a serene escape, this destination delivers it all. I left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already planning a return visit.
Vijay T — Google review
If ever there was a truly magical place, it's here! Stunning gardens with something for everyone. So many vibrant flower beds, (one of them shaped like a butterfly if you can find it), a children's garden, a fairy village, many walking trails, a plethora of relaxing areas to sit and chill, a learning center, a cafe, and the trolls! The children's garden was full of whimsy. I FELT like a kid again wandering through it, marveling at the growing things, the quaint workshop, the pond, the book themed areas, and so much more! I walked 23,000 steps in these gardens, but if you have mobility issues or tend toward lazy, there is a free shuttle that is always on the go. I had a marvelous time hunting down the trolls, they are quite a sight to see. I had a preconceived notion of what the fairy village would be, which was nothing like what it actually was, but the interactive nature (pun intended) of it was satisfying. The cafe was nice, although I wish they had more variety of hot meals to choose from. The heirloom tomato sandwich I tried was quite good. The gift shop is fantastic! Beautiful items, many from local artists, along with a great selection of shirts and books. You can see it all in a couple hours, although I would dedicate at least 4 to really immerse yourself in it and not have to rush. It was more than worth the price of admission. A wonderfully soul nurturing experience.
Lisa W — Google review
Go for a visit- you will be glad you did! Loved seeing the trolls but there was so much more to see and enjoy. Staff were all very friendly, lunch in cafe was simple but good. Loved hiking the full loop to see all the sections. You could stay all day! Loved it!
Charlotte P — Google review
This botanical garden is routinely listed as one of the ten best in the USA. I understand why, but it could be even better. I loved all of the trails I went on and the excellent variety of plants and trees from the Northeast. There are great options for children including the interactive fairy village. The giant trolls and a huge hit and I particularly enjoyed the woodland garden and the hillside walk. If you get tired, there is a shuttle that will take you to most places in the gardens. What I found lacking was consistent clear signage for the trees and plants. This was notable in the garden of the senses. I needed more guidance above t what to touch, taste, smell, etc. There were at least 20 times we needed to look up a plant or tree on an app because we saw no sign. This was particularly challenging because the cell.coverage was limited and spotty. The cafe seems much nicer online than in person. It was a serve yourself cafeteria style and felt hectic and loud like the sort of cafe I expect in a zoo. I wanted a calmer, fancier dinning experience because I'm a tired old queen and I want my creature comforts served on glass plates. It you are charging $29 for adults admission per person, why not add a swanky restaurant too. In for a penny in for a pound.
Peterson T — Google review
We were only visiting the NE for a short road trip and I heard about the Trolls recycled art and that they were the Guardians of the seeds. The story lore and the awesome venture by the artist peaked our curiosity. This is a DO NOT MISS. It may seem weird to go to a botanical garden on vacay, but this is beautiful, amazing for kids, although this trip was just my husband and I and it was outstanding. Nice walks and hikes. Just outstanding place to visit.
Candice W — Google review
Visited a few times. Busy place in good weather. Rainy day visit was quiet and great to explore without crowds. Definitely check out the trolls built into the landscape. Take advantage of the free shuttles that drive around, sometimes you get lucky and get one to yourself and get a semi-private tour. We also did the guided tour on the electric cart and the docent was great with the kids and gave us great information. The kids really enjoyed riding on the cart too!

The Maine State Museum offers a captivating journey through the state's cultural and natural history. Established in 1836, it has faced several closures before reopening for good in 1971 with state funding to ensure its continued operation. The museum features exhibits on Maine's history and wildlife, with regularly changing displays on the third floor. Visitors can also explore the nearby State House for more animal dioramas.
This museum is centered all around Maine people and history there. Several rooms filled with items that highlight Maine in the past. We loved it there. Undergoing renovations now, I can't wait to see it again when the time comes to reopen. Hopefully, it will be soon!

It is definitely the best value for the money of any museum I've ever been to. So many great exhibits to browse through. Fun for all age groups and interests. Multiple floors but easy to maneuver and get around. Nice little gift shop attached to it and very friendly staff throughout making it a wonderful overall experience.

Love this museum. I hope it reopens soon. Came here as a child with my grandmother and have returned many times as an adult. It's one of my favorite rainy day outings for a change of pace. I particularly enjoy the First Nations artifacts and stone tools. This is a great place for adults and kids. Large free parking lot. You can skip down the road to Hallowell for a selection of great restaurants and shops to complete the trip.

Went here on a goof because we had several hours to kill before an event and it was only $3 - all I can say is WOW!!!!!! This museum is fabulous!!!!! 4 floors of amazing displays, exhibits, hands on fun, history! Lots of great photo ops too. You MUST go, bring the kids, and allow yourself lots of time to see everything.

I have lots of memories of coming here as a kid and enjoy bringing my own kids a few times a year. The museum has lots of great exhibits about the history and animals of Maine. The third floor houses exhibits that change regularly. From the museum you can also walk over to the State House which is beautiful inside and has a few more dioramas that feature animals from Maine.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, a historic 1827 landmark in Maine, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can explore the lighthouse tower and learn about the area's history from knowledgeable guides provided by Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. The surrounding grounds are well-maintained and feature a small museum, gift shop, and amenities such as restrooms, food, and ice cream.
What a beautiful place to drive and visit. Its a beat down the beaten path, but once there, the views are gorgeous. The line to check out the lighthouse was long, so I didnt get in to see it, but its really the same view just up higher. Bring some lunch, find a spot on the rocks and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It really is worth a trip to see!

If you like lighthouses this is a neat place to go. It is open to walk up for a small donation during the season. There is also a lot of area to walk around outside, a fisherman museum, picnic tables, and an art gallery. Requires a small fee to enter the park.
Erich F — Google review
Breathtaking! Nice easy drive from Portland going up Route 1. Good destination with a stop in between at Red's for lunch. Bring extra cash to go up the lighthouse. They charge $1/person to go up because the $4/person entrance fee does not go to the operation of the lighthouse.
Khek D — Google review
If the staff that was there would have been nicer i would have given them a 5 star. We were there 10/23/25 I know itbwas closed to go into but they allowed some others inside and up in the lighthouse but not anyone else. When I walked up to the door one of the men told my wife, he said its way past Columbus day and we are closed. Rude just plan rude . But besides his rudeness it still was beautiful.

A Delightful Coastal Gem with History, Hospitality, and Scenic Beauty What a memorable visit! From the moment we arrived, the friendly lady at the entrance made all the difference—she was incredibly knowledgeable, warmly greeted us with fascinating tidbits about the lighthouse, and even gave my pup a treat, which made her tail wag non-stop. The admission fee is very reasonable—around $4 per person (ages 12+) to access the park, including the Fishermen’s Museum, Art Gallery, Learning Center, restrooms, and picnic spots. If you’d like to climb the tower, there’s a suggested $1 donation per person, which helps maintain this historic beacon. Speaking of history, the tower standing today dates back to 1835, replacing the original 1827 structure that deteriorated due to poor mortar quality. It still houses its original fourth-order Fresnel lens, one of just six still active in Main. The keeper’s house, now the Fishermen’s Museum, offers charming exhibits on maritime life and lighthouse lore. Facilities are well-maintained and visitor-friendly. There are restrooms available on the grounds, the lawn is clean, and the entire park feels cozy yet spacious. If you’re traveling in an RV, you’re in luck—there’s plenty of parking, including ample room for larger vehicles. Craving a bite? Next door is a charming restaurant—Sea Gull Restaurant & Gift and other nearby cafés and seafood places. One friendly warning: people use the road to walk and exercise on so be mindful—safety first. All in all, a perfect blend of awe-inspiring coastal scenery, rich history, friendly faces (and dog treats!), and thoughtful amenities. A must-stop on any Maine road trip
Marcelle A — Google review
For our 25th wedding anniversary, we spent 9 days touring Maine and then Boston, visiting nearly a dozen lighthouses along the way. This is the only one we took the time (and were able) to climb, and explored the visitor center for quite awhile, too. Well worth the time spent! It's a scenic area, and the docent was extremely knowledgeable - unsurprised she competed on and placed second on Jeopardy! In the museum, Joe was extra-friendly and enthusiastic. It's clear the community has a great love of the lighthouse and associated buildings, given how quickly they had restorations done after a damaging storm in 2024. The nearby gallery featuring local artists was also a treat. If you are a lover of lighthouses and in the area, make some time to enjoy all Pemaquid Point has to offer - and even if you aren't consider stopping by.

Beautiful place, great views. I was there too early to climb the lighthouse, but it is open certain times during the day. There's beautiful grounds to walk around, and a cool museum inside. I want to see all of the lighthouses of Maine, was glad to mark this one off my list. $4.00 parking fee.

This is our favorite Lighthouse. My first visit was in 1965. My whole family has visited this area on vacation many times over the years. Beautiful views of ocean. They've added some seating at the top. They are also adding plantings on the upper rock areas; I assume for erosion.

Cutest bookstore!!! Ahhh I could get lost in here for hours. There are so many great book sections and they are all organized. Plus, there’s a café attached to the bookstore so it is very convenient. This strip of stores are so fun to visit, like Reny’s. The staff are also super sweet.

When I found this Sherman’s bookstore a few years ago on a tourist trip, I loved it! It’s connected to a coffee shop, it’s well organized, and it was easy to find Maine-specific books. I’ve since moved to (northern) Maine, and my husband spent a weekend in Damariscotta because of the nice memories. In second impression, not as a “tourist”, I was disappointed with the ratio of tchotchkes and non-book items to books. I did appreciate their “staff picks” section with “shelf-talkers” describing why they liked a particular book. Sherman’s has locations throughout Maine, and I’ve noticed that over time they seem to carry more and more tchotchkes and fewer books in more crowded spaces. That is particularly true in Bar Harbor. That said, they are still open while many other bookstores have closed, so more power to them.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I saw in this art museum! Especially on a college campus. I went on a weekday during the summer semester, so it was very empty. There is so much to see, and I took longer exploring, than I initially thought. Great artwork on display. Some rooms were under construction, so I couldn't enter. But overall, I recommend anyone to stop by if they're in the area.

Not child friendly for families with a variety of ages. I wanted to let elementary and middle school age kids enjoy the art. But I was kicked out for a toddler making a few short noises. I was looking for a place that encouraged kids and families - this is not the place. After I left, the security guard continued to follow the other children in our group. Community art museums should not be so restrictive that kids feel unwelcome - this is often their first memorable exposure.

It rained that day! Still when it stopped it was nice! Plenty of parking and bathroom and nice shop/ museum inside. Road is narrow so closer in one car at a time. I didn't run into anyone opposite of me. Resident nearby.

I was so excited to visit this lighthouse famous from the Forrest Gump movie. The experience was even better than I had hoped for. We were there on a July afternoon and there were a decent number of people visiting at the same time. There is a path on the grounds with historical information that we started with followed by a museum and gift shop where we stopped at next. The museum had lots of interesting information on both the lighthouse and the area. Bob let us in to the lighthouse itself and was a very kind and interesting volunteer to chat with. The views are spectacular and the lighthouse itself is gorgeous. If you are in the area, stopping here should be a priority. Highly recommend. This is an experience not to be missed

Andy and crew at Monhegan Boat Line to Monhegan Island are awesome. Very smooth boat ride both ways, easy pick up and drop off, and bathrooms on board. Very possible to see sharks or whales, but ask Andy and his crew questions about the islands and stuff and they are happy to answer them.

Located in Waldoboro, Morse's Sauerkraut is a renowned MidCoast establishment that offers a unique blend of deli and luncheonette experiences. The shop has upheld the tradition of Virgil Morse, who began crafting sauerkraut from scratch in 1918. In addition to their signature kraut, Morse's boasts an impressive selection of fresh sausages, tinned fish, craft beers, and cheeses.
This place shouldn’t exist but it does and it’s a gem that is worth a side trip. Amazing selection of wines, cheeses, meats, and lacto-fermented goodness. Foodies should run, not walk to this place. You will be rewarded … it’s like the field of dreams of the deli/grocery world!

I drove to this specifically to see it. lt is out in a rural countryside very beautiful drive. Got tgere went inside and low and behold they everything you would want ( when buying) specialty food and wine.

Such a cute unique place!!! Hidden in the country side, it is an absolute gem if you want international goods that make great gifts or for your own cooking. I was blown away by all that they had and will definitely be going back. Oh and the sauerkraut was good too ha! The ready made sandwich was AMAZING. Fresh product and unique too. Well worth the trip in the country side.

Morse’s Sauerkraut is located in the middle of farm country in Waldoboro, in an unassuming roadside building, but the moment you walk in, you have entered a gourmet import store and restaurant. Morse’s has been making their own sauerkraut and pickles for more than 100 years, and I’m not sure how long the shop has been open. They have a large and interesting variety of cheese, and they are enthusiastic about answering questions and providing samples. I always learn something when I stop in. In the sausage/deli cooler, they have German, Hungarian and Pork sausages, as well as imported hams, smoked pork, and other charcuterie. The rest of the shop is devoted to imported products and ingredients, mostly German, and a huge selection of chocolates. We always stop by for our holiday candy for stockings and gifts.

This place exceeded my expectations!!! So much more inside this shop. We all know about their amazing Kraut and pickles, but their homemade pastrami is like heaven in my mouth. The fact that I was able to sample not only the pastrami but also some of the most amazing cheeses I ever tasted made my day! I will be traveling back for cheese and pastrami frequently!

Went here on a beautiful fall day. The drive into this remote restaurant was stunning. The German restaurant and store is kinda awesome. Lots of product that you don't normally see. Various pickle samples. We ended up choosing the half sours. So good. The restaurant was fun too. Small room only five tables so we had to wait but it was worth it. Had the bratwurst with Sauerkraut and a reuben both were great. Fun outing.

You have got to stop here. It is amazing. All the pickles and kraut are just the start. It is wonderful. Wish the restaurant was open. It sounds awesome. Can’t wait to come back. The deli has a tremendous variety of meats and cheese. Don’t forget about the great selection of candy.

Museums
The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. It houses an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures by renowned American artists with connections to Maine, including the famous Wyeth family. The museum is also home to the Wyeth Center and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, which features rotating contemporary art exhibitions. Visitors can explore several charming galleries on Main Street within walking distance of each other.
What a jewel of a museum! If you are an art lover or just art curious, or perhaps want to impress someone with a cultural excursion, I encourage you to visit! You won’t be disappointed! It’s beautifully curated and the grounds are lovely. If funds are tight, plan it for their free first Fridays of every month. If you are visiting in the winter, be sure to check out their holiday events. The gift shop has some fun finds, especially if you’re looking for a unique gift.

This museum features multiple floors with a diverse range of artwork and sculptures, including contemporary pieces, some that are a bit eerie, and others with intricate details. There are several gift shops on-site. As part of our American Cruise package, the visit was included, so I'm unsure of the entrance fee. I particularly liked the dress made from seashells. Rockland is a small town, so this museum is a great way to pass the time.

Children are unwelcome here. Other than the wonderfully kind woman who sold us tickets at the door, this was the least child-friendly museum I have ever visited. There was no effort made to engage children either in the signage or in hand-outs. The security guards hovered around my family and I believe they were communicating to "warn" each other because we were stared down every time we entered a new gallery. We are not inexperienced museum visitors and I have never felt so unwelcome. Honestly, I wish the staff would have just asked us to leave and given us a refund; it would have been less stressful for all involved. The collection itself is fine (all the most famous Wyeth pieces are elsewhere, of course). There was an attempt to include indigenous perspectives and modern artists, but ultimately it relies entirely on its Wyeth collection, which relies entirely the viewer already being fan (which some would say I am) because it is displayed without clear thematic or narrative principle. As an alternative, allow me to suggest visitors enjoy the galleries on Main Street for free and read "A Piece of the World" by Cristina Baker Kline for a pleasant day of art in Maine connections. Upon leaving my 8 yo, who happens to keep a collection of brochures from the MET, Scottish National Galleries, etc for her own inspiration, literally commented, "huh, you would think if they want more artists in Maine they would try to encourage kids to find art." Agreed, kiddo. Agreed.

Great little spot for some quality art inspired by the area. We checked out YT grounds and the guest museum and the Andre Wyeth church. Person in the lobby was happy to share some personal history that makes the artist come alive. Take a leisurely stroll as we did not have the time as had to make a ferry. Fun anyways.
Kevin M — Google review
We had high hopes for an afternoon of art appreciation. That was not going to happen.. the staff was snooty and they closed the sixth floor due to heat. They did not tell you only part of the museum was open. I read such great reviews and the first floor looked like it was a high school senior show case day. The paintings were Bob Ross type, but he was teaching the love of art to the masses, not trying to pass his work as museum quality. A good 20 percent of the art was worth your time. Do not waste your $20 on this place.

Impressive curation of art representing regional and internationally-renowned artists. There are two buildings and 6 floors, so we did not get to see everything, but our group looks at art thoughtfully (and rather slowly), so it is possible to see it all in a day (if you’re efficient). Guests wear an entrance sticker and can exit to have lunch (many Rockland downtown area eateries in close walking distance) before returning to the museum. I was surprised by the extensive collection of quality art.

Well worth the admission price. Loved the Hopper/Wyeth show and also Katz w/friends. The satellite church across the street has amazing architecture and the Wyeth watercolors were fabulous. Was hoping to see the Porters that another reviewer mentioned but they weren't up. Still had a great visit!

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse

The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, built in 1902 at the end of a breakwater, is a must-see destination for adventurous travelers. The rugged stone breakwater stretches almost 1 mile into Rockland Harbor from Jameson Point and offers seasonal tours. This man-made walkway made of granite blocks took 18 years to build and leads to the picturesque lighthouse sitting atop a brick house with sweeping views of the town.
Wow, what an experience! I am so grateful it did the walk down to the lighthouse, but I was so nervous I wouldn't be able to. Definitely make sure you are wearing sturdy shoes; this is not the place for flip flops or heels! If you go slow and steady and pay attention to where you are walking you will be fine. The view is beautiful and well worth the walk. You can also go around the side of the building and up the top for more pictures. No animal sightings when we were there, but we did see a lot of cool boats.

First thing’s first- THIS IS SO FUN. That being said, it is fun if you enjoy a moderate, just under a mile walk upon uneven slabs to get to the lighthouse itself. Saw many families out with their kids, even a couple jogged past with their dachshund (so cute in his vest). I would advise caution and being weather aware before and during your trip. We went as a little storm was blowing up the coast and definitely took our time against the wind to ensure steady footing. It was exhilarating and made me want to run and jump and laugh, I love these kinds of things. There is a nice little parking area, and historic information out at the lighthouse. Definitely would return!
Achlee B — Google review
The walk was the excitement to get to this lighthouse! 1.3miles one way from the parking lot to the end of the pier. (Use port-a-potty beforehand!). Just take your time and step carefully on the rock wall path. The view is tremendous. Once at the lighthouse, sit and enjoy the breeze, fresh air and beautiful views.
Maura K — Google review
Great place for a sunset view of the bay! Warnings: Very uneven terrain walking out to the lighthouse and no restroom once you make out there...so plan your trip (movements) accordingly! Otherwise, this was a fun, adrenaline filled walk across well placed rocks to get a good photo shoot by the water.

Omgosh. Next to driving on that old rickety wooden bridge over a canyon in Colorado, this is the scariest walk I've ever had. All I thought about is everything bad that could happen. If I dropped my only set of car keys or my phone in the crevice of the stones, or tripped and sprained my ankle okay I know this isnt encouraging, but im not a risk taker. Its a long walk on the jetty. On one side is the deep cold rough waters and on the other side was the deeper, cold, rough waters. I focused on where I was walking. It was sunset when I started. Not smart. If it were to get dark & I had a 30 minute walk back on the jetty... but we made it back. Not sure I'd do it again. By boat, yes.
Cash — Google review
Great spot for a walk.. but well worth it. The long stroll offers up great views on both sides. Excellent place to watch there sunset. The lighthouse itself is aging but still a pretty site..
Justin N — Google review
Quite the walk to get there but it was worth it. About 9/10 of the way in the water started coming over the walkway for a little! I found it fun to try to navigate but some people got their toes wet. It was a very unique path getting there and it was a nice viewpoint

Really cool place and about a 8/10's if a mile walk one way across large granite pcs fun walk the day we went was a bit breezy but still well worth the trip.

Mount Battie Trail

Embark on a picturesque 1-mile out-and-back hiking adventure along Mount Battie Trail in Camden Hills State Park. This moderate-level trail offers seasonal wildflowers and a rock scramble at the top, providing an up-close look at diverse wildlife. The trail leads to the summit of Mt. Battie, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Camden's harbor, Penobscot Bay, and nearby islands.
This short trail was made more challenging by Mother Nature the day we did it. We had a light rain while hiking (& scrambling) up as a family. Short enough the kids didn’t whine, but just slick enough we had to help our 6 year old in a few places.

Hiked up from the wharf for the fireworks and it was an awesome hike with an excellent view. There is an auto road you can pay to drive up, and it is not very expensive. It brings you right to the outlook.
Beau R — Google review
Spectacular view. Tower was being worked on and unable to photograph it. Used auto road. The path changed not like years ago, park and space for a picnic on a blanket.
Lindamarie J — Google review
This is a solid tourist attraction. There are lots of options here for pretty much everyone. You can drive all the way to the top and there is easy access to the views from parking lot. Also there are bathrooms at the top which aren’t terrible. There are also options to hike all the way from the bottom, or various points a long the trail. It isn’t a hard trail, but there are a lot of rock scrambles, if rainy it could be pretty slick.

Steep from town...better to take trail from Camden Hills Staye Park. Great views of the PenobscotBay & Camden & beautiful trail!

I will start this by saying this area is a state park. So there is a fee but it's not an arm and a leg. Also for those who like camping there is a campground at the base. That said, let's continue... Now two ways to get to the top of Mt. Battie. You can walk up, or you can be like me and drive up. I've done enough walking for the last 65 years:) Parking though will accommodate around 30 cars. And I'll be honest that's just a guess. So once you're up there you get one of the best views of Camden harbor and Rockland that you could ever ask for. Also there is a small observation tower you can go up to get an extended view. If you're lucky you can watch eagles sailing on the up draft and they float around for a bit. I would suggest bringing up a lawn chair. A lot of people don't and just walk around for a few minutes then leave. The best part is to sit and take it all in. So if you're up in the area stop by. You won't be disappointed.

Camden Hills State Park is a sprawling 5,700-acre mountainous park in Camden, Maine. It features a campground and an extensive network of 30 miles of well-mapped hiking trails that cater to various skill levels. The highlight is the moderately difficult climb up Mt. Megunticook, offering stunning vistas of Downtown Camden and Penobscot Bay.
Drive up the mountain to enjoy panoramic view of the midcoast region. Short walking distance to the tower that overlooks Camden harbor. In July, the woods around the tower are filled with Maine wild blueberries 🫐

We camped here for a few nights and enjoyed the campground. When checking in the woman at check in was helpful and very nice. Site was great, park was quiet at night, and the other campers were friendly. Would camp here again. Oh- and Mt Battie view is AMAZING.

The view from the top of Mount Battie is absolutely gorgeous. In the fall it must be amazing!! We’ve been there several times through the years. They’ve made some improvements including a lead up sidewalk from the parking area which is wheelchair accessible. It cost $12 and change to enter the parking area which for 2 out of state residents in a vehicle.
John K — Google review
Cool state park in a great location. We camped one night in the off season. Park staff were friendly and helpful. We drove up to enjoy the view which is pretty spectacular, had dinner in Camden, then returned to the site for a warm campfire on a cool night. There are trails for hiking, decent cycling options, we saw a ton of wild turkeys. Only downside is that the bathroom/showers aren't quite at the level we're used to with the PA State Parks that we frequent. The campsites are spaced nicely so some are not right on top of each other, some are, but we had a lot of options this late in the season.

Camden Hills State Park is an absolute gem! The park offers stunning viewpoints overlooking Camden Harbor, Penobscot Bay, and the surrounding forests — the kind of scenery that makes every step worth it. Whether you hike up or drive to the top, the views are gorgeous throughout. Highly recommend visiting, especially on a clear day when you can see the islands spread out across the bay. 🌲⛰️✨

This was our basecamp for visiting Camden. We love the town and the park. Clean, safe, friendly. If you're camping, there's no additional fee to drive up Mt. Battie. We discovered that Edna St. Vincent Milay wrote a poem about the view!

Beautiful scenery and nice woodsy hikes. The viewpoints are stunning and parking was easy throughout the park.
