With an array of attractions including thrilling water slides, a wave pool, and various water games, it's the perfect spot to cool off and have fun. Wave pool and falls are available twice before 2 PM so enjoy that on time. Water slides are good and all are working perfectly. Dry games are good but roller coaster not working when we visit. Boating Rs.100 for 4 members is worth. Response is good from all staffs. Locker facility available for Rs. 50 deposit Rs. 200 refund Rs. 150 Food is okay not too good.

-2 /5 Stars: Extremely Disappointing Experience at Athisayam Theme Park I recently visited Athisayam Theme Park and was appalled by the subpar quality of the facilities and services. The water quality in the park's pools was atrocious - salty, unchlorinated, and filled with suspended particles. The staff's attitude was unprofessional and unfriendly, lacking even basic courtesy. The rides were poorly maintained, with no emphasis on safety. To make matters worse, the rides were timed and overcrowded, leading to frustrating wait times. The restaurant was woefully unprepared for Sunday crowds, with insufficient food options and a skeletal staff that struggled to keep up with orders. Chaos reigned supreme, with long lines and frustrated patrons. Many of the rides were closed for maintenance, further reducing the park's already limited appeal. The bathrooms were filthy and poorly maintained, with inadequate facilities. But the most disturbing aspect of my visit was the blatant disregard for privacy and security. CCTV cameras were installed in the men's changing room, and I witnessed three women enter the men's changing room within a span of 15 minutes. Overall, my experience at Athisayam Theme Park was a disaster. Unless the management addresses these serious issues, I would strongly advise against visiting this park.

It was amazing, full of adventure. It was Great experience. This park is located on very large area, full day required if you have to enjoy and have fun. From tommorow i.e 14-4-2025 the price of Adult-₹800 and Child-₹500. If you are planning to come bring your clothes with you otherwise they will provide you with some extra charges like T-shirt-₹200, Burmudas-₹100 Pant-₹200 something and Lockers are also there with ₹200 deposit in which ₹150 is refundable.Dry Part of the Park consists of different Swings.Horror House is lill bit scary, 7D Theatre was amazing like actually going through that ride.

Visited Athisayam recently with family, and it was a fun outing overall. The water rides and wave pool were the main highlights, especially for kids. It’s a good place to spend half a day and cool off. That said, the park does feel a bit outdated and some rides need better maintenance. The atmosphere could be improved, and the food options inside were average. If they work on cleanliness and upgrade a few areas, it would make the experience much better. Still, for families looking for a budget-friendly day of water fun around Madurai, Athisayam is a nice choice.

Very nice. It's worth for one whole day enjoyment. It was very amazing trip. We enjoyed lot.
Wesley D — Google review
We went there on weekday (13/10/2025)by the opening time ans we were the first family to enter the theme park. Only 4 families came on that day totally (15members) in the whole park. Very surprised by the numbers. It’s good to go by starting time 10.30am. They are allowing first to wet park (11pm-2pm) after that dry park 2pm till 5pm. TBH average park with minimal maintenance. Water had lots of small insects like ants, bugs. Chlorinated very salty water. We will get hurt in some rides too because of the water force. They gave nice float balloons . Many rides in dry park were under maintenance. They are strictly not allowing outside food. But for you can take food for small babies. They have canteen inside where they offered only bread omlette and chilli parotta since there was no crowd. Very poor food quality. They had water bottles, soft drinks and lays chips. Workers were so kind and friendly and they guided nicely. Locker facilities are available. Bathroom and changing rooms were there. Kids will enjoy a lot. A good place for one day time pass but go without any expectations.

Only a few games and sports are available. Place is crowded on holidays. Food is average and cleanliness at the food court is bad. Outside food is not allowed inside. No guide or helping person is available. The depth of water is 2 to 3 feet only.

Beautiful and Peaceful Place in Madurai 🌄🐟 Visited Samanar Malai with my family and had a wonderful time. The pond at the base has many big fishes—kids will really enjoy it! We climbed the hill in the evening, and the view of Madurai city from the top was stunning. The cool breeze, natural beauty, and peaceful atmosphere made it a very relaxing experience. Just a note: be careful while climbing—the path can be tricky, especially with kids. A perfect spot to enjoy nature—highly recommended! 🌿✨

Nestled in the heart of Madurai, the Arulmigu Koodal Azhagar Temple is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Tucked away in narrow lanes, this ancient temple may be overshadowed by the grandeur of the nearby Meenakshi Temple, but it captivates visitors with its vibrant and intricate architecture.
Arulmigu Koodal Azhagar Temple in Madurai is a truly divine and peaceful place to visit. The temple architecture is stunning, especially the colorful gopuram with its detailed carvings, which looks even more beautiful when lit up at night. The atmosphere inside is very calm, and darshan was smooth with almost no waiting time. It’s one of the prominent temples in Madurai and definitely worth visiting for both its spiritual value and architectural beauty. A must-visit if you are exploring Madurai — perfect for experiencing the city’s rich heritage and devotion.

A vaishnava temple that had history of More than 2300 years in record , Tamil literature talks about only kal azhaghar koil, to differentiate that the name kept as koodal azhaghar koil (koodal -madurai). Temple have a wide pragaram with pillared hall showing beautiful paintings of 108 divyadesham . The top view of gopuram are top notch of the temple architecture (similar to seerkali sattainathar temple). Very beautiful paintings representing 10 avathars of Vishnu and Stories (must visit the temple who and all visiting madurai meenakshi) this temple is very near(400m)from meenakshi but sadly unnoticed by many devotees

I recently visited this magnificent temple and was truly left in awe. The moment you step inside, you’re embraced by a sense of calm and serenity that's hard to find elsewhere. The environment is peaceful, clean, and well-maintained, perfect for spiritual reflection or simply a quiet escape from the noise of daily life. What really stood out to me were the ancient sculptures and intricate carvings throughout the temple. Every corner tells a story, of devotion, history, and unparalleled craftsmanship. The details on the pillars, walls, and idols are simply breathtaking. It’s like walking through a living museum, yet you feel the spiritual energy all around. The temple complex is vast, with shaded walkways, well-kept gardens, and plenty of space to sit and soak in the atmosphere. Whether you're a history lover, a spiritual seeker, or just someone who appreciates culture and architecture, this place has something special to offer. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area. It’s not just a temple, it’s an experience.

Meenakshi Amman Temple is an ancient Hindu place of worship located in Madurai. The temple features a walled complex with colorful, sculpted gate towers and a sacred water tank. It is a significant religious site with historical and cultural importance, attracting visitors from all over the world.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Divine and Peaceful Experience at Madurai Meenakshi Temple The Madurai Meenakshi Temple is truly a masterpiece — both spiritually and architecturally. The temple is maintained exceptionally well, with clean surroundings and a beautifully organized atmosphere. The queue system is very decent and perfectly managed, ensuring everyone gets a comfortable and peaceful darshan. What impressed me most was how calm and orderly everything felt — no pushing or rush in the lines, allowing devotees to fully experience the divine presence of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. It was a deeply satisfying and serene visit. Highly recommend visiting this temple for anyone seeking a truly divine and peaceful darshan experience! 🙏

An absolute masterpiece of devotion and architecture. The moment you enter, you’re surrounded by color, life, and divine energy. Every sculpture, every carving tells a story from centuries of faith. The towering gopurams painted in vibrant hues are breathtaking up close. This temple isn’t just a monument; it’s the living heart of Madurai. The rituals, the chants, the fragrance of incense, and the calm faces of devotees create an atmosphere you can feel in your bones. Goddess Meenakshi’s sanctum radiates an indescribable sense of peace and power.Whether you visit for faith, history, or art, you’ll walk out lighter, grateful, and deeply moved. Truly one of India’s most magnificent spiritual experiences.🤩🕉️🔱♥️🛕
Nandita S — Google review
A peaceful and memorable visit to Madurai Meenakshi Temple I recently visited the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and it was a beautiful experience. The temple is grand and full of history, with amazing carvings and colorful towers. At the moment, the towers are under renovation and painting work is going on, so most of them are covered. Still, the temple’s beauty and energy can be felt everywhere. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and spiritual. The darshan of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar felt very peaceful. Even though it was crowded, everything was fairly well organized. One thing to be careful about — there are a lot of people outside trying to mislead visitors, especially auto drivers and some shopkeepers. They might say there’s no cloakroom inside, but don’t believe that. There are official cloakrooms near all four temple towers where you can safely keep your slippers and mobile phones. Overall, it was a meaningful visit and a reminder of how rich and alive our traditions still are. #MaduraiTemple #MeenakshiAmmanTemple #Madurai #TempleVisit #TamilNaduTemples #TravelTips #SpiritualExperience #IncredibleIndia

One of the most famous Temple of India , situation in Madurai. It's temple of Meenakshi Amman otherwise known as Devi Parvathi. Don't miss this temple ,it's also one of the oldest temple in India . Best time to visit will be during 5 or 6 AM in the morning,so that you can finish darshan in less than 30mins ,it gets crowded later in the day . I wish they keep the surrounding of temple a little bit more clean . Mobile isn't allowed inside .

Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the most magnificent temples in India. The intricate sculptures, colorful gopurams, and rich cultural heritage make the visit unforgettable. The temple premises are clean, the queue system is well organized, and security is helpful. Morning and evening poojas are truly divine. The entire atmosphere feels sacred and peaceful. This temple is not just a spiritual place but also an architectural wonder. Definitely a must-visit for anyone coming to Madurai.

I visited the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, and the experience was truly exceptional. I loved the temple with all my heart. The architecture is breathtaking, and they are still working on certain areas to make it even better. Every intricate detail on the walls is impressive and reflects the temple’s rich heritage. The people there are incredibly pure and kind-hearted. Their warmth and the way they treat visitors stood out to me—they genuinely make you feel respected and welcomed. Before entering the temple, there are a few important rules to follow. You must remove your shoes, and bags have to be deposited at the designated counters. Shoe storage is available for free at specific counters, which is very convenient. Mobile phones and electronic gadgets are not allowed inside the temple premises, and you cannot leave your phone inside your bag. There is a special counter meant only for mobile phones, where they charge ₹5 per phone. So if you are planning to visit, it’s best to come hands-free or carry only what’s necessary so you can enter peacefully and enjoy the temple without any hassle. Overall, it was a soulful and memorable experience, and I would highly recommend a visit to anyone traveling to Madurai.

🌟 A Breathtaking Marvel of Dravidian Architecture and Divine Energy! (5/5 Stars) 🌟 The Meenakshi Amman Temple is not just a place of worship; it is an architectural and spiritual masterpiece that left me completely in awe. It is the heart and soul of Madurai and an absolute must-visit for anyone traveling through South India. What truly stands out: 1. The Gopurams (Gateway Towers): The sheer scale and detail of the 14 multi-tiered, colorful gopurams are unbelievable. They are adorned with thousands of intricate, vibrant carvings depicting various gods and mythological scenes, telling ancient stories in stone. Walking past them feels like stepping into a living, breathing history book. 2. The Spiritual Ambiance: Inside, the atmosphere is incredibly serene despite the crowds. The scent of incense, the sound of temple bells, and the sight of devotees performing rituals create a powerful and deeply moving spiritual experience. The inner sanctum of Goddess Meenakshi is truly divine. 3. Architectural Highlights: Be sure to spend time in the Hall of Thousand Pillars (Aayiram Kaal Mandapam)—the carving and symmetry are mind-blowing (even though there are 985, not a literal thousand!). Also, don't miss the Golden Lotus Tank (Potramarai Kulam); it provides a beautiful, reflective view of the Southern gopuram. A quick tip for your visit: Mobile phones and cameras are generally not allowed inside, so please use the dedicated deposit counter. It's worth getting a special darshan ticket if you are pressed for time, but otherwise, simply soaking in the history and devotion is enough. An unforgettable journey into art, faith, and history. Highly, highly recommended!

Thousand Pillars

Mentioned on
2 lists
Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks
The Hindu Temple of the Thousand Pillars is a popular tourist destination in Egypt. It was built by the Islamic Caliph Umar in 642 AD as a memorial to his military victory over the Byzantine Empire. The temple is made up of more than 100 massive columns, some as tall as 30 feet, and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
This building is separate from the main temple, although within the perimeter, so you still do not have your phones or cameras, which is a shame as it is a beautiful building where the imperfect pillars are stored, along with some beautiful brass statues. We had a guide which was very helpful as there was not much in terms of written explanation.
Jacqui L — Google review
Sadly they are not letting mobiles inside .. I only carry memory in my mind .. such a waste of opportunity for them to show case 1000 pillars to all the people I know in my life … lots of things need to be changed in India… if we take pictures and share to our friends there is more awareness spread around… it feels why are they even allowing people to visit .. are they not aware of that we are stealing the images in our mind and memory and taking them along… oh lord curse some of these people so they wake up….

One of the tourist attraction depicting our ancient culture and all round developments of Pandya kings whose capital was Madurai. As the name suggested this Mandapam has approximately 1000 pillars. Exactly 985 Big pillars and 22 small pillars which produce musical notes are seen here. Very rare sculptures of Gods and Goddesses with ancient yalis, sculptures and warring animals, rare to see Manmadan and Rathi, Veerabadrar, Chockanathar, Natrajar etc are significant ones. It is a must visit museum with a very nominal fees.
Uma M — Google review
Located inside the Meenkashi Amman Temple in the two and a half millenium old city of Madurai. The beauty of this construction is that standing at any point in this Mantapam, all the pillars appear to go away in a straight line from the point of viewing Each of the pillars is tall with life-like sculptures of mythical people The hall is large and very cool even in the blistering heat outside Nowadays photography isn't allowed inside this monument, but once upon a time, one could take pictures with a mobile camera... The entrance fee is a nominal ₹ 10 and the place deserves a visit...
Suresh M — Google review
What power the sculptures were having then to craft such a beautiful monumental structure. The presiding deity inside this hall is Natarajar. Very finely carved columns on both sides of the hall, fills the heart with joy. This place is striving as museum also. A rich heritage is passed on to us to feel proud. Photography not allowed. So no photos.

St. Mary's Cathedral, also known as the Church of Lady of Dolours, is a prominent religious site in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Built in 1841 by the New Madurai Mission and later expanded to accommodate large gatherings, this 150-year-old cathedral showcases Catholic architecture with Indian influences. Its vibrant colors and decorative style resemble churches built by the Portuguese in Kerala and Goa. The cathedral's neo-Gothic architecture features a striking vaulted orange ceiling offset by simple stained glass windows.
Peaceful place of worship.. located at a walkable distance from Tirumalai Nayakar Mahal, Madurai. The entire area is mind soothing. There is a school adjoining the church.

Visited this massive cathedral this noon and I was stunned since I’ve not got into any church before. It was amazingly built neat and well maintained. Statues of Jesus’s life, the way he crucified, the struggles he gone through everything have been carved amazingly and I was surprised to see them. Visiting this beautiful silent place would be your worth time 👍🏼.

Arulmigu Solaimalai Murugan Temple, Pazhamudircholai

Mentioned on

Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled atop a picturesque hill and enveloped by lush forests, the Arulmigu Solaimalai Murugan Temple in Pazhamudircholai stands as one of the six revered abodes dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Hindu deity of war. This sacred site is accessible via a winding road that may not always be fully paved, offering visitors options to either trek 3 kilometers or take government buses or private vehicles.
Nestled in the lush green folds of the Alagar Hills in Tamil Nadu, the Arulmigu Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple stands as one of the revered Arupadai Veedu – the six sacred abodes of Lord Muruga. Surrounded by thick forests, chirping birds, and serene hill paths, this temple offers an atmosphere of divine calm and natural splendor. The journey to this temple itself feels like a spiritual retreat, as devotees climb through the dense, refreshing landscape to seek blessings. At Pazhamudircholai, Lord Muruga is enshrined with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, bestowing grace upon the devotees with a benevolent smile. The temple architecture may be simple compared to other abodes, but the spiritual power here is deeply felt. The divine energy of the hill, combined with the chants of devotees and traditional rituals, leaves every visitor with a sense of peace and fulfillment. One of the temple’s special highlights is the “Panjamirtham Prasadam” – a sacred offering made from a blend of five ingredients including honey, ghee, banana, dates, and sugar. Unique in its taste and texture, it carries the essence of devotion and tradition. Tasting this prasadam in the tranquil breeze of the Alagar Hills is a truly blissful experience, one that lingers in the heart long after the visit. K.vinoth

Recently visited the Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple. Wonderful experience. Mesmerizing idol of Lord Murugan. Surprisingly people weren't understanding when we asked the direction to Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple. It's popularly known as Solaimalai Murugan Temple. The temple is located about 25 kilometres north of Madurai, atop a hill covered with dense forests. One of the six important abodes of the deity Murugan located in Tamil Nadu, it is close to the Alagar Perumal Temple. Around 3 kms from Alagar Kovil, there's a small ghat road to the top of hill. The road is excellent. Govt free bus service is available but one needs to wait in long queues. Many people come by walking. Roadside parking available on top of the hill. Temple will be open from morning 6am to evening 6 pm. No break in between. Darshan usually takes 1-2 hrs during weekends. There's Rs. 100 quick darshan service available which takes around 30 mins.

Pazhamudhircholai, one of Lord Murugan’s Arupadai Veedu, is where Avvai Patti received wisdom from Murugan himself — about hot and cold fruits! I visited on a Sunday around 5:30 pm, there was quite a crowd, so I took the ₹100 darshan ticket. If you wait for about 30 minutes, the rush settles down and you can have a peaceful darshan. The picture gallery is lovely they even give a Murugan Valli Devasenai photo with a coin, a nice keepsake for pooja, travel, or gifting to others. The temple layout is beautiful: Vinayagar shrine comes first, Murugan with Valli and Devasenai in the center, and the Vel shrine at the end. Set on a hill, the place is cool and serene though the monkeys are plenty and a bit aggressive thanks to frequent feeding. So, guard your food and belongings! A visit here is a true delight, especially to see the ancient Kadugal and soak in the divine calm of the hills.

A Divine Experience at Arulmigu Solaimalai Murugan Temple! Visiting this temple nestled in the lush hills of Pazhamudircholai was truly a spiritual and serene experience. As one of the Arupadai Veedu (six abodes of Lord Murugan), this temple holds deep religious significance and offers a peaceful escape from the busy world below. The drive up the hill was scenic, with dense greenery and fresh air. The road is well-maintained, though a bit narrow in parts, so caution is advised. There's also a government bus service for those who prefer public transport. The temple itself is modest in structure but rich in energy. The natural surroundings amplify the spiritual vibe. It was heartwarming to see the main deity—Lord Murugan—worshipped alongside Valli and Deivanai. The temple priests were friendly and maintained a good rhythm of poojas and aarti. Don't miss the nearby Noopura Ganga, a sacred stream said to have divine origins. The entire area feels untouched and blessed. Tips: Footwear must be removed at the base before heading up the steps. Morning and evening visits are best to avoid the heat. Carry water and be respectful of the natural surroundings. Highly recommend this temple not just for devotees, but also for nature lovers and peace seekers.

Unique feeling when I reached Murugan Temple to pray 🙏. I really recommend walking your way up to the temple — it makes the experience even more special. The most wholesome part of my journey was meeting new friends along the way; it truly made the trip unforgettable. I’ll cherish this experience forever and would love to visit again with my friends and family in the future. If you plan to visit, I recommend going during Sashti Pooja time — you might even get to witness some amazing Bharatanatyam and cultural performances 💃✨

Small temple from the Aarupadai lot and open at all times. Vehicle parking is available on the road sides. Slightly ghat section and people will be walking all along to climb up/down. You will see much crowd in boarding the bus rather than at the Temple itself. Highly recommended to go on own transport.

*Must-Visit Destination near Madurai!* If you're visiting Madurai, you absolutely can't miss this place! The view is breathtaking, and the experience is unforgettable. Here's a little insider tip: *Insider Tips:* 1. *Extra Clothes*: If you're planning to visit the Noopura Gangai Rakkayi Amman Temple, make sure to carry an extra pair of clothes. You'll need to take a bath, and while there's a ₹15 ticket option to skip the long queue, the free line can take over an hour, even if there are only a few people ahead of you. 2. *Route Suggestion*: Take the Madurai - Natham Rd. It might be a bit longer, but the scenic views and smooth ride make it worth it. The road is close to the mountains, and you'll enjoy the picturesque views without any traffic hassles. 3. *Evening Visit*: Plan your trip in the evening and aim to reach the temples before 4:00 PM. This way, you can explore all three temples and take in the stunning views. Keep an eye out for the mischievous monkeys on the way – they're generally harmless, but drive safely! *Pro Tip:* Don't miss the two additional temples located uphill. They're definitely worth a visit! Recommendation:A must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Madurai. Enjoy the scenic views, explore the temples, and take in the spiritual atmosphere.

Azhagar Kovil temple is a popular destination in Madurai. This temple is located 22 kilometers from Madurai city. This massive structure is surrounded by a fort. Alagarkovil and its surrounding villages have a historical past with traces of two thousand year old evidence. It is one of the 108 abodes of Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped in the name of Kallazhagar. The mandapam and the exquisite pillars leave one in awe. The Chithirai festival during which the god Alagar visits Madurai and enters into the river Vaigai is the most famous one attracting devotees from all over Tamil Nadu. This is actually a great occasion not seen elsewhere in Tamil Nadu. It is the common forum where the folk and the elitist population mingle with each other. This festival brings social, religious and cultural harmony among the people.

Must visit place if you are visiting madurai One of the best view you will have * Little Suggestion: there are 2 more temple upward so must go there and 1) if you are visiting these 2 temple have a extra pair of clothes because in noopura gangai rakkayi amman temple take bath i would suggest a 15rs tickets otherwise in free line it would take more then hour even if you see there are only 10 person in line so it's recommended. 2) take Madurai - Natham Rd , yes it more distance but you will found best view this route. It is closed to mountain and no traffic and nice road quility. 3) travel in evening try to reach before 4:00 PM so you can enjoy all 3 temple and on the way to mountain lots of monkeys (not so harmful) but drive safely

Before visiting to this temple that I was not aware about the story of how lord Vishnu played the role of brother for durga mata in her marriage...and thus temple is dedicated to brother of Durga maa that is kallazghar akka vishnu ji.. This temple is really mesmerizing...in love with this temple because of location, the carvings, the positivity of the temple that you will feel instant divine connection. The famous kal alagar temple located in the hills of alagarmalai is quite a beautiful place to visit in Madurai. There’s a huge parking area outside the temple complex. The gopuram is tall and sculptures are well preserved. The main shrine is located 100 meters approx from the main entrance. Average waiting time is 15 to 20 minutes on weekdays
Sandeep K — Google review
The temple is truly beautiful, and the prasadham is excellent. If devotees visit, the free line moves faster than the paid one, which is convenient. The Ramanujar shrine is a peaceful spot where you can rest, and the Perumal looks stunning. A visit to Shakarathalvar is a must, but before that, make sure to stop by the Karupu Swami Kovil at the entrance—the aroma of his sandhanam is heavenly. After that, you can see Azhagar and explore the other shrines at a slow and relaxed pace, making the visit truly enjoyable. The temples maintainance was so good and kept clean.

Do not visit this place until they finish their renovation. It’s total waste of money and time. On each side of main building which is under renovation, there are two galleries. One is paid and another is either free or included in the price. Staffs at both centre were taking their mid noon nap and was not bothered to greet or say hello. All what’s on display was in a very bad state. There were lots of spelling mistakes on all the writings. Someone accountable, please have a look. This is not what a Gandhi Museum in India should look like even when it’s on renovation. Very very very disappointed and has never seen anything pathetic like this.

Main museum is under renovation (it was supposed to have reopened by now), government museum is often closed depending on the day, and the only thing to see is a small exhibit on the Indian independence movement, a replica of Gandhi’s house, and a shrine that (supposedly) contains some of his ashes. Worth 30-45 minutes if you’re already in the area otherwise skip it - you can get the same information about Gandhi online quite easily. Also why is there a giant T-Rex at a Gandhi memorial? I visited this place on 17th July 2025. There was only a small gallery where you could learn about india's journey from when the britishers started colonising to the independence period.. it would take 30- 40 mins to see this gallery. A lot of history that we learned in school and more can be understood from here. In addition to this there is a small museum that was open. There is also a small memorial where Gandhijis ashes are kept. However, the main museum was closed for renovation. Based on my interaction with one staff member, it seems the closed part of the museum would re-open on 2nd October 2025. Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a significant site in Madurai, featuring a historic pond and an ancient temple dedicated to Vishnu and Mariamman. The teppam floating festival held in January or February is a major attraction, where pilgrims take boats out to the goddess shrine at the center of the tank. You must see it to believe in it's beauty . When ,I ,visited AVKC Kalyana Mahal to attend my Sister's house wedding on 10/11/25 , I was astonished to see it's beauty . The people who reside nearby are blessed, so much so they can witness the beauty of the Crimson Sun rising in the morning , take a walk in the evening 🚶‍♂️, enjoy the crisply fried Mullu Murangakeerai Vadai or cool Madurai famous Jigarthanda & while away their time soaking in the beauty of Sun 🌞 ☀️ 🌤 🌅 set & rest on it's bunds during moon light . I learnt that the tank is full to it's capacity because of the recent incessant rain & it helps to recharge the ground water 💧 table & thereby helping the people who reside nearby & the business establishments , there . I learnt that Float Festivities are held annually & it will be a treat to watch it in the backdrop of well illuminated night 🌙 skies . Boat services 🚢 🚣‍♂️ 🛥 🛶 ⛵️ 🚢 🚣‍♀️ are there to enjoy for a nominal ticket amount . MADURAINS YOU ARE GIFTED TO HAVE SUCH A EYE 👁 ✨️ CATCHING TEPPAKULAM IN YOUR TOWN . ENJOY IT .

A temple pond complex with a man-made island in the middle. A great venue for spending the evening in Madurai and enjoying with snacks. One has to bargain a lot with Autos to reach here or while going back to your stay. This place is a hot spot for all the local ppl with walking area around the pond and which lighted up in the evening. Many ladies were seen enjoying their evening with mirchi bhajji or fruit chat or other snacks which are available from the different carts. Children were playing nearby in narrow pathway. Boating facility is available but during my trip it was not operating. Otherwise one can reach to the temple and explore that also. But luckily I witnessed beautiful sunset.

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a beautiful and historic temple tank in Madurai, famous for its massive size and serene atmosphere. The water tank is so huge that it looks like a small lake, with steps all around and a mandapam in the center. It is especially popular during the annual Float Festival (Teppotsavam) when the idols of the deities are taken around on decorated floats — a truly mesmerizing sight. The place is calm and peaceful in the evenings, perfect for a quiet walk or to sit and relax. Surrounded by greenery and temple structures, it feels both spiritual and refreshing. When filled with water, the reflections and ambience make it a lovely spot for photography as well. A must-visit landmark in Madurai, not just for devotees but also for those who appreciate culture, history, and scenic beauty.

Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam is a beautiful and historic temple tank in Madurai, just a few kilometers from the Meenakshi Temple. Known for its serene ambiance and stunning size (spanning over 16 acres), it’s surrounded by steps on all sides, with a central island dedicated to Lord Vinayaka. The tank, created in the 17th century during King Thirumalai Nayak's reign, is linked to the Vaigai River and holds cultural and religious significance. One of the most captivating times to visit is during the Theppotsavam (Float Festival), held annually in January or February. The brightly lit, flower-decked floats carrying deities Meenakshi and Sundareswarar glide across the water, attracting devotees and tourists alike.

Nestled in the serene village of Idaikattur, the Sacred Heart Shrine stands as a testament to Gothic architecture and spiritual heritage. Constructed in 1894 by French missionary Fr. Ferdinand Celle SJ, this stunning church is modeled after France's Rheims Cathedral and boasts an impressive statue of Jesus with his heart uniquely positioned on the left side of his chest—one of only three such statues worldwide.
The external and interior Architecture of the Church is simply marvelous and astonishing. One can feel the calm and inner peace inside the church. The Sacred Heart Church is an ancient church built in Gothic architectural style situated at Idaikattur, in Sivagangai District of Tamilnadu. It is about 36 km from Madurai and in close proximity to the National Highway leading to Rameshwaram from Madurai. This unique church of the sacred heart of Jesus was built in 1894 AD by a French missionary Fr. Ferdinand Celle SJ. This is a replica of the Rheims Cathedral in FranceIdaikattur Church is an architectural marvel. It is distinctive with its French style of Gothic architecture and its high vaulted roof supported by columns with cantilevers. The windows are adorned with small brick pillars with hollow flower bricks and stained glass which illustrate the events of the way of the cross vividly and skillfully. And since the church is located in an area where the climate is tropical, the hollow bricks have been artfully used reduce the heat. The gothic arches are festooned with rows of beads, flowers, garlands which are fabricated from terracotta. The main altar of the church is its most alluring feature. Its gothic façade which is of around 45 feet is consisted of God holding his son Jesus by his hand and Holy Spirit along with angels surrounding him. The altar here depicts the Christian doctrine – Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. The church also showcase exquisite stucco work, figures of saints, angels, St. Joseph, mother of sorrows and many others. Amazing examples of French art work can also be seen here. There are around 153 depictions of angels in this church.

Kollangudi Vettudaikaliamman Temple is a must-visit holy place in South Tamil Nadu. My mom and I had a wonderful experience here. The temple is located just 13 km from Sivagangai, and there are frequent buses from both Sivagangai and Kalayarkovil, making it easily accessible. One of the best things is the availability of free parking for both bikes and cars, which is very convenient. We visited on a non-full moon day and could easily have darshan without any need for special tickets. However, on full moon days, the temple sees a large crowd as it's considered an auspicious day, and people even stay overnight to attend early morning darshan. There are plenty of shops nearby to grab a bite or do some shopping, and the restrooms are well-maintained. Although the temple is currently under construction, it still retains its charm and spiritual essence. Overall, it's a peaceful and divine place that I highly recommend visiting!

Very ancient and powerful temple that fulfils devotees’ wishes. For people facing problems due to unfair enmity, you can pray here. Prayers will be answered if justice is on your side and enemy will be punished but in case your prayer is unjustifiable and you are not the victim, the prayer’s effect will be reversed and you will be unjustified instead. Visited the 3000 year old historic shiva temple. It offers a peaceful and calm environment for devotees. You can feel peace and spiritual uplift when you step inside the temple. The crowds on festival days can be large and there's not much lodging options as it is located in a small town. One of the best thing about this temple is 6 foot tall natarajar idol. The arudra dharishanam festival is a major festival because of the reveal of emerald natarajar idol. no waiting in queue if you go there on normal days. One of the must visit shiva temple in the world.

A nice divine temple with a serene atmosphere.. The temple's history goes back 3000 years. Other than the main shrines of the Temple, there are other shrines like Maragatha natarajar, manikavasagar shrine etc which are also main attractions Since recently the Kumbabhishekam ceremony was performed, the temple looks pretty awesome with new paint work..
Harish C — Google review
The history believed to span over 3,000 years, this ancient shrine is one of the oldest Saivite temples in South India and holds immense religious, architectural, and cultural significance. Steeped in mythology, the temple is said to be where Lord Shiva shared the secrets of the Vedas with Goddess Parvati—hence the name “Uthirakosamangai,” meaning "the place of the whispered secret." Another significant legend ties the temple to Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, who is believed to have married Mandodari here, implying the temple's sacredness dates back to pre-Ramayana times. Revered saints such as Manickavasagar and Arunagirinathar have sung its praises, securing the temple’s place in Tamil devotional literature. The temple's crowning jewel is its 6-foot tall emerald idol of Lord Nataraja, believed to be carved from a single piece of maragatham (emerald). This rare idol is covered in sandalwood paste year-round and is revealed only once during the grand Arudra Darshan festival in December–January, drawing thousands of devotees from across the region. The presence of a Sahasralingam—one large lingam embedded with a thousand miniature ones—adds to the spiritual mystique and uniqueness of the temple. Architecturally, the temple is a marvel. The structure features intricately carved pillars, towering gopurams, and majestic yali sculptures at the entrance, with stone balls that rotate in the mouths of the mythical creatures an impressive testament to the ingenuity of ancient Tamil artisans. Each element reflects a perfect blend of devotion and craftsmanship. Festivals are celebrated with grandeur and fervor. Arudra Darshan is the most anticipated, followed by Tirukalyana Vaibhavam in April–May, which marks the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati. Other important festivals include Maha Shivaratri, Annabishekam, and Vasanthotsavam. Daily rituals and six poojas are performed with devotion, maintaining the temple's traditional rhythm and spiritual energy. However, despite its sanctity and magnificence, a concerning issue shadows the temple experience preferential treatment given to select individuals who offer bribes or donations in exchange for faster access or special privileges. In a place where every pilgrim should be treated equally before the divine, some temple staff reportedly solicit or accept money in return for prioritizing “VIP” visitors. This leaves ordinary devotees many of whom travel from far, wait patiently in lines, and come with sincere devotion feeling marginalized and rushed through their darshan. Such practices raise serious concerns about fairness and the spiritual atmosphere of the temple. In a sacred space that represents divine equality, any form of discrimination or monetary favoritism is not only inappropriate but also undermines the entire purpose of pilgrimage. Temples should be places where all are welcomed with the same reverence, regardless of status or wealth. To preserve the sanctity of Uthirakosamangai, stronger efforts must be made to ensure that all devotees receive equal treatment. Measures like queue systems, clear signage, structured complaint channels, and dedicated volunteers could help improve the experience. Above all, addressing unethical behavior among temple staff is vital to restoring trust and respect in the temple environment. Despite these modern flaws, the Uthirakosamangai Temple continues to captivate the hearts of those who seek divine connection, artistic beauty, and cultural depth. Its legacy is profound, and its potential to inspire devotion remains untarnished if only the values of fairness and humility are upheld alongside tradition.

That positive energy when you're entering into temple... Wow... This is the first shivan temple which is constructed. And one of the oldest trees is here that is 3000 years old
Mukilan K — Google review
It is one of the most important Shiv temples of Bharat. It is believed that it is the first Shiv temple of the world. Another important aspect is the huge Nataraj vigrah which is housed in a separate sanctum. It is wonderful. It is difficult to imagine how an intricate one piece idol from Emerald would have sculpted. This idol is covered with sandal throughout the year. Only once in a year during arudra darshan festival in Nov Dec the old chandan is removed and new chandan is coated. At that time only one can see the uncoated form of Nataraj. The temple has beautiful colourful gopuram. There is quite a hustle outside temple with shops and parking space. Interiors of the temple are painted well.

A Spiritually Enriching Visit to One of the Oldest Shiva Temples – Uthirakosamangai This was our first visit to Uthirakosamangai Temple, and it was truly a spiritually fulfilling experience. We had been planning to visit this ancient temple for several months, and fortunately, a couple of days’ break gave us the perfect opportunity to finally make the trip. Also known as Mangalanatha Swamy Temple, this historic site is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. It is believed to be one of the earliest Shiva temples in existence, rich in history, legends, and deep spiritual energy. One of the temple's main attractions is the 6-foot-tall Maragatha Nataraja idol, carved entirely out of emerald (maragatham)—a truly rare and priceless representation of Lord Shiva in his cosmic dance form. Most of the year, this sacred idol is kept covered in sandalwood paste, and it is revealed to the public only once a year during the Arudra Darshan festival. The temple is also associated with a unique and powerful lingam called the Sahasralingam—a representation of 1000 lingams in one single structure, created as a tribute to 999 sages who, according to legend, offered their lives in devotion to Lord Shiva. A Glimpse into the Temple’s Mythology According to temple lore, Lord Shiva once appeared in Ravana’s palace as a child with a small wound. When Ravana tried to pick up the child, a fireball emerged from the temple pond (Agni Theertham). Fearing it was Shiva's wrath, 999 sages sacrificed themselves by jumping into the fire. One sage stayed back to protect the sacred scriptures, and Shiva, pleased with his devotion, appeared as the Sahasralingam. That lone sage is believed to have been reborn as the revered saint Manikkavacakar, who also has a special lingam dedicated to him within the temple. The temple’s name, Uthirakosamangai, signifies the place where Lord Shiva shared sacred knowledge with Goddess Parvati, making it an important center for both devotion and divine wisdom. Our Experience We visited the temple in the evening, and since the temple had recently undergone Kumbhabhishekam (consecration ceremony), it was quite crowded with devotees from nearby towns and villages. Despite the crowd, the experience was serene and well-organized. We could still see the Yaga Kundams (ritual fire altars) used during the ceremony, which added to the divine atmosphere. A highlight of our visit was seeing the ancient 3000-year-old Jujube (Elanthai) tree, which is believed to hold spiritual significance. This temple is also said to grant moksha (spiritual liberation) to 1000 Shiva devotees, further reinforcing its importance in Hindu belief and worship. Final Thoughts This temple is not just a place of worship—it’s a treasure trove of history, mythology, and divine presence. The architecture, the legends, and the spiritual ambiance make it a must-visit for Shiva devotees and anyone interested in ancient temples of India. If you're in or around Ramanathapuram, or planning a trip to southern Tamil Nadu, I highly recommend visiting Uthirakosamangai. Do try to go early or during non-peak hours if possible, especially after major temple festivals, to enjoy a more peaceful darshan. Om Namah Shivaya 🙏🏼

Devipattinam Navagraha Temple

It is an interesting temple and one of its kind. It has no building. There are 9 idols of 9 Navgrah which installed in the waist deep sea water by Bhagwan Ram himself. These Navgrah are made of navpashanam. However due to erosion there are no visible features left. The vigrahs just look like stump of stones. At time of high tide only 5 Grahs are visible and remaining are submerged. However at high tide also the water is waist deep only. This place is known for parihar of various astrological dosha such as Navgrah shanti, Brahmhatya dosh etc. Rate chart for every parihar is place at entrance. The Navgrah are surrounded by an open gallery type structure all around from where one can view Navgrah on inside and sea view on outside. The parking is available.

Visited the Devipattinam Navagraha (Navapashanam) Temple, which is located in the sea.. a truly unique and peaceful place. The temple doesn’t have a building…instead, the nine Navagraha stones are set right in the water and are believed to have been installed by Lord Rama himself before he went to Lanka, after performing a pooja here. You usually walk through the shallow water to see them, but during our visit, due to high tide, no one was allowed to go inside as the water level was high. Those who experience it say it feels very special and spiritual. It’s calm, quiet, and gives a unique, relaxed feeling by the seashore. Parking is available (₹40), and you can complete the darshan in about 15–20 minutes. Definitely a must-visit spot near Rameswaram for its unique setting and spiritual energy.

Navagraha temple, situated inside sea. Walkway is provided. In high tide times Vigrahas are not visible. Many 'parihara' poojas are done here. It is 15 km from Ramanathapuram town. Bus transportation is also available. Worth visiting. It is different.

Visited the Devipattinam Navagraha (Navapashanam) Temple was a truly unique experience 🌊🙏 — unlike any other temple I’ve seen. The nine planetary stones are set right in the sea, and walking through the shallow waters to reach them gives a magical feeling ✨ if you're spiritual. Locals believe Lord Rama himself installed these stones before going to Lanka, and you can really feel that spiritual energy here. It’s especially beautiful in the morning when the tide is low 🌅. Just be ready to get your feet wet, and soak in the mix of mythology, nature, and devotion — a must-visit if you’re exploring around Ramanathapuram or Rameswaram 🛕💙. I had a relaxed feel being on the sea shore at a quiet place.

Navagraha parikaram temple. Navagraha were placed under water in the sea. Parking available. You can visit the god within 15 minutes.

This was the first temple I saw only with the Navagraham. I shocked. At present it has only 5 out of 9 navagraha statues. It was a blissful place with sea breeze. Great view. I liked it.

It's connected to Ramayana period, where it's a belief that the Navagraha was made and workshipped by Lord Rama. It's beautiful located in the sea shore

Lord Hanuman temple on the sea shore. This temple is 4 km away from Adi Jagannath Perumal temple. 15 kms from Ramanathapuram bus stand.

Sri Sethu Bandana Jayaveera Anjineyar Temple, Sethukkarai is on the sea shore near Ramanathapuram about 4 kms from Thirupullani Divya Desam. Connected to Ramayana events , it is believed Lord Rama accepted Vibhishan (brother of Ravana) to his side in this place. Rama Sethu, the bridge to Lanka was believed to be built from here with help of Hanuman and vanara sena. Devotees take holy dip in the sea just opposite to this temple. Sri Hanuman deity in the sanctum of this small temple.

This famous but small temple is located about 5 kms from the famous divya desham Thirupullani Adi Jagannadhar temple, on sea shore. According to devotees, this is where Lord Rama'e vanara sena start building the Rama sethu (bridge) with stones. Generally the waves/ tide is high here. The sethu stones could not be seen. The cleanliness is quite bad as devotees don't bother about it (they throw lots of litter atound). The changing room and toilets are in pathetic condition. The temple is not maintained that well. The sea appears quite majestic and mysterious from the shore.

This Hanuman temple is located 5 kms away from thriupullani and you can take a auto from thriupullani which costs around Rs.250.A very small temple near the sea.

From Thirupullani Temple, you can reach Sethukarai Hanuman Temple by auto for 200 rupees up and down; there are no frequent buses.

In Hinduism, the immersion of ashes (Asthi Visarjanam) after cremation is a sacred ritual tied to the belief in the soul's liberation (moksha) and its journey beyond the physical body. The most significant sites for this practice are holy rivers and sacred water bodies, believed to purify the soul and help it transition to the afterlife. Sethukarai Connection While Sethukarai (the "shore of Rama’s bridge") near Thirupullanni is primarily associated with Lord Rama’s quest to Lanka and the sacred Sethu Snanam ritual, it is not traditionally a primary site for ash immersion. However, its proximity to Rameswaram and the belief in the sanctity of its coastal waters mean some devotees *may* perform rituals here, especially if tied to vows or local customs. Significance: The act of immersing ashes symbolizes returning the physical body to the elements and releasing the soul to merge with the divine. Sacred waters are believed to carry the blessings of deities like Vishnu, Shiva, or Ganga Devi, aiding the soul’s journey to pitr loka (ancestral realm) or ultimate liberation.

One of best Hanuman temple near Rameshwaram. It is a dedicated temple for Lord Hanuman he will face the sea. There is no any big shops nearby, it is better to bring water, food and other eatable items. You can take bath in the beach and beware of strong waves and very slope, there is dress change room available but not so clean. You can visit this place along with Tiruppullani Aadhi Jegganatha Perumal temple and Utthirakosa Mangai. Just 15 mins drive from Uthirakosa mangai temple.

Kushi Beach Resort is a large, tranquil white-sand beach destination offering a calm swimming environment. The resort provides spacious air-conditioned rooms with dining areas, bathrooms, hot water, and TVs. Guests can enjoy complimentary breakfast during their stay. Although the resort does not have its own beach, it is located near Ariyaman Beach where visitors can take leisurely strolls or swim in the less deep waters suitable even for young children.
It is an excellent beach resort. Just 50 metres from the beach. The resort has entertainment too Rooms are elegant and covered entirely by wood. Actually this cottage has four beds too. Innovatively, the TV is located in a separate annexe without disturbing the persons occupied the bed. The restaurant is too good in a thatched shed under the shadow of trees. Excellent ambience. In Ramnad, no other entertainment except this resort. Swimming pool is very big and we can go for a deep swim. The water falls is also there and children would love it. The room is designed round and covered by wood. Very nice . For a functions, it is a good place for conduct in a open lawn and umbrella type dinings are aso there. Room rent is affordable. Good place to spend with the family.
Mohanakrishnan V — Google review
The location of the resort is excellent, close to the Ariyaman Beach. However, the overall maintenance of the property is quite poor. The swimming pool was dirty, and the mini waterfalls were surrounded by an unclean environment. The garden area also lacked proper upkeep. While the food served was decent, the dining and common areas were not well-maintained. The kids' play area had broken rides, making it unsafe and unappealing for children. On a positive note, Mr. Iyappa was very courteous and took good care of us. He even offered small gifts to our kids, which we appreciated. The pricing was reasonable, but the resort desperately needs better maintenance to match its potential and location.

Rooms are very Poor Maintenance, Towel only given. located Bank of Ariyaman Beach, great Ambience. Free usage of Swimming pool. Hotel service is available within resort. Car Parking available, children’s park and landscape was good. Busy tourism spot.

The rooms are quite different, designed with a nature-based theme. There's a bit of sand and a mild smell, but overall they’re good for staying. The swimming pool and water park are enjoyable, while the food is of average taste

Krusadai Island

Island
It's a paradise for nature lovers, offering pristine waters, coral reefs, and diverse marine life. Ideal for bird watching, the island is peaceful and less commercialized, perfect for a serene getaway. Tickets typically range from ₹150-₹300, with safety measures in place to protect for visitors. A must-visit for those seeking natural beauty and a unique marine experience.
Yogesh L — Google review
Krusadai Island near Rameshwaram is truly a sight to behold, even if you don’t actually step onto it. During our visit, we couldn’t manage to reach the island due to lack of time, but the view itself was absolutely breathtaking. The vast stretch of the blue sea glistening under the sunlight was picture-perfect, and the calmness of the surroundings added to its charm. One of the highlights for us was capturing beautiful photos of the serene waters and the rustic wooden bridge, which gave the entire scene a postcard-like feel. The contrast of the deep blue sea with the earthy tones of the bridge was simply mesmerizing and made the experience unforgettable. Krusadai Island is known for its rich marine biodiversity, coral reefs, and unique ecosystem, often described as a paradise for researchers and nature enthusiasts. While we could only admire it from a distance this time, it was easy to imagine the abundance of natural beauty that awaits on the island itself. Just the view was enough to make us feel refreshed and more connected to nature. Although we missed setting foot on the island, the experience of soaking in its surroundings, photographing the sea and the bridge, and feeling the peaceful aura made it a highlight of our trip. We are already looking forward to returning and exploring it more closely next time.

Worth visiting. Boating @ 300per head. Team will take you to the island in a boat and a small walk around throughout the island.Later they will drop you back to the pick up location. Round trip takes around 1.5 hrs( depends on boat availability)The shining blue ocean all around makes it a must visit spot during your Rameswaram Dhanushkodi trip. Boating starts @8am and closes around 2PM. But this timing depends on wether conditions and boat availability as well.We couldn't make it on the first day of our trip as the boat was under repair. So we visited again the very next day around 8.30 am for boating. Only one boat was available on that day(02Nov 2024)and hence there was a waiting oeriod to reach back as the single boat has to shuttle around.

Best place for study trip nd field visit.can able to see lots of corals and several marine species.they won't allow you to collect any species or corals from there. Proper care and maintenance was undertaken.people who work there are really helpful and they take care of the corals with their life.Everyone should visit this place once in life time.

It's one of the Coral Island of India and it's now a restricted place. Reason being the behaviour of humans towards nature. However, it's one of the most beautiful and amazing places in India. One can see live coral reef here, flourish in its own environment, with minimal to no human interference. Nowerdays, These island are mostly visited for study purpose only. Along with corals there are many marine species present here which have been well preserved. Visiting these island is an honor in itself. Ideal field visit location for Geology, Marine, Fisheries and Environmental Students.

Villoondi Theertham

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Villoondi Theertham is a serene and spiritual beachfront in Rameswaram, known for its wide sandy expanse, clear waters, and a revered freshwater spring. This hidden gem is one of the 64 sacred water bodies in the area and offers a peaceful escape from the usual tourist spots. While accessibility can be a challenge, the breathtaking views and unique history make it worth the visit.
Villondi Theertham, located around 6 kilometers from the Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, is one of the most revered theerthams (sacred water bodies) associated with the Ramayana. The name “Villondi” translates to “buried bow,” and according to legend, this is the very spot where Lord Rama plunged his bow into the ground to draw fresh water for his consort, Goddess Sita, who was thirsty during their return from Lanka. Remarkably, even today, amidst the salty waters of the sea, the theertham yields fresh water, a phenomenon that continues to amaze devotees and visitors. This site holds deep spiritual significance. Pilgrims believe that taking a dip in Villondi Theertham absolves sins and brings blessings of good health and prosperity. It is also considered sacred for performing ancestral rites and rituals. The calmness of the location, combined with its mythological importance, makes it a peaceful stop during a Rameswaram tour. Apart from its religious value, Villondi Theertham is also known for its natural beauty. The serene stretch of beach, clear waters, and tranquil surroundings create a soothing atmosphere, ideal for quiet reflection. Visitors often find the spot less crowded compared to other theerthams, making it a hidden gem for those seeking both spirituality and solitude. Easily accessible by road, Villondi Theertham is best visited in the morning or evening to enjoy the cool breeze and peaceful ambiance. For pilgrims and travelers alike, it is a place that beautifully blends mythology, faith, and nature’s charm.

Villoondi Theertham - A Sacred Spot with a Divine Legend. Legend says Lord Ram shot an arrow into the sea to provide fresh water for Sita, and that spot became Villoondi Theertham. This unique mid-sea well still holds sweet water, a natural marvel symbolizing the island’s divinity. With a nearby Shiva temple and Hanuman shrine, it’s a peaceful and must-visit place in Rameswaram.
Banty S — Google review
Villoondi Teertham is a peaceful and spiritually significant spot located a short drive from the Ramanathaswamy Temple. According to legend, this is the place where Lord Rama shot an arrow into the sea to bring fresh water for Sita — and even today, there’s a freshwater spring just a few steps from the salty ocean, which makes the spot feel truly miraculous. The location is calm and scenic, perfect for those seeking quiet moments away from the temple crowds. The sea view is beautiful, especially during sunset, and the gentle breeze adds to the serene atmosphere. However, facilities around the area are limited — there aren’t many shops or restrooms nearby, and the road leading there can be a bit rough in parts. Still, it’s a must-visit for its mythological importance and tranquil natural beauty. If you’re in Rameswaram, Villoondi Teertham is a wonderful place to pause, reflect, and enjoy the divine calmness that surrounds it.

Villoondi Theertham in Rameshwaram is a truly divine and serene spot that left us with beautiful memories. Located a short distance from the main temple, this sacred site is not only historically significant but also incredibly scenic. We had the chance to visit, spend some quiet time, and capture lovely photos of the calm blue sea blending seamlessly with the horizon. The long stretch of water, the soothing breeze, and the spiritual aura of the place made it a peaceful escape away from the crowd. The surroundings are simple yet carry a deep sense of sanctity that can be felt instantly. One of the most unique experiences here was tasting the well water right by the shore. It is said to hold religious significance and is surprisingly fresh despite being so close to the sea. The story behind it, linked to Lord Rama, makes the experience even more special, as it connects visitors to the legends of the Ramayana. Drinking the sweet well water while standing beside the vast salty ocean truly felt like a miracle of nature. We took plenty of photos to capture the essence of Villoondi Theertham—the calm waves, the quiet coastline, and the little moments of peace it offered. Overall, the visit was not only spiritually uplifting but also visually enchanting. It’s definitely a must-visit spot in Rameshwaram for both devotees and travelers alike.
