Buena Vista Ski Area

Temporarily Closed
Ski resort
Nature & Parks
Buena Vista Ski Area is an incredibly impressive, family-oriented destination with a nice range of options for skiing and snowboarding, particularly when the backside is accessible. The interior of the facility offers a pleasant and comfortable environment, often accompanied by live piano music. The dining experience is satisfactory, with a personal recommendation being the chicken strip basket. The functional bathrooms are especially notable on the upper level. One cannot overlook the breathtaking views from the top of continental, which are simply unparalleled in this region.
Great little welcoming ski spot. The lodge is cozy. The food is tasty. The lines are as short as the runs. It's a great place to learn to snowboard or ski.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FAMILY FRIENDLY MEMORY MAKING PLACE! I have so much to say about how amazing this place is.. Brought my Family of 8 there today.. 1st of all.. SUPER AFFORDABLE.. 2nd.. Everyone here is Extraordinarily Friendly…. One of the employees (Scott) I believe, was an off duty lift operator, literally he was there with us wife & kids, not even working, found out one of the kids I brought just moved here from Georgia & had never skied a day in his life. He took him to the bunny hill and gave him a Private Lesson until he had the basic skills down.. To pass on his love of the Sport. Thank you for making today one of those SPECIAL DAYS!
Samuel S — Google review
Absolutely awesome, family-friendly location. There is a decent enough variety for skiing and snowboarding, especially when the backside is open. Inside the building is nice and cozy, and there is often live piano playing. The food is alright, I personally recommend the chicken strip basket. The bathrooms are functional (the upstairs one is better). The views on top of continental are simply the best around. Overall, it's great coming here for skiing/snowboarding and tubing. Especially with how close to Bemidji it is.

Staff closed the ski hill for “safety concerns” due to weather. They didn’t announce the closure on their website. We drove 2 hrs for a little fun in some fresh snow. One staff member informed us it was “bad” at the top of the hill and that he had to “run around town” with his girlfriend. Weather is currently 23 degrees with light snow and a 16mph wind, pretty normal stuff for the region. I’ve been to this same hill in sub zero temps and stronger winds with snow before. I get the feeling that the staff is lazy and wants to watch the state hockey tournament instead of service customers at their small overpriced ski hill. I would have happily paid the price they charge for the meagre 200’ vertical they offer but will now reconsider in the future. Situations like this make it less likely that I will go out of my way to support a local business. The trade off is typically better service than the big places but I guess that’s a thing of the past. They also told us that Spirit Mountain in Duluth was also closed. I called. They aren’t. So you can add lying on top of laziness. Nice combo. I’ll be taking my money elsewhere.
Tanner N — Google review
In the middle of Prairie, it is good to have an ski resort, but compared to other places like up in Alberta or Colorado, it’s tiny! But the reason for not giving 5atar is that the facility is so old and poorly maintained. The first place I check on everywhere I go is their WC. You should squeeze yourself to fit in with your outfit in there. Also upstair they had a rest area I suppose for skiers who stay overnight. It wasn’t clean at all! Again when you want a quick ski in the area, it’s fine. Adults lift tickets are $45 which is fine.

Buena Vista is a local gem! We are so blessed to have this ski hill in our area. Great service, good food and good clean fun!
Mandy E — Google review
We love BV! They made the most of the poor snow conditions. Thanks for all the fun! We were able to ski a couple times earlier in the season and enjoyed tubing & horse drawn wagon rides today.
Chelsey M — Google review
I wish they had a midnight ski night once in a while. For what we have around here it’s a fun little hill. Family Friday night was a blast for the kids!

Watermark Art Center & SHOP 505

Mentioned on
4 lists
Art gallery
Sights & Landmarks
Watermark Art Center, also known as WMAC, is a non-profit organization supported by its members and dedicated to fostering the growth of art within the community. The center offers free public access to various galleries featuring national, regional, and local artists through group exhibits, solo shows, and installations that are regularly rotated. In addition to providing exhibition space, Watermark Art Center hosts author readings and workshops. It is the sole art center in Bemidji apart from those within BSU.
The former Executive Director of the Concordia Language Village recommended I check out this Art Museum downtown. I was very drawn to the Sam Zimmerman art pieces, which remind me of Chuck Close’s work. I also purchased some beautiful cards at the gift shop, where I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with the retired professor volunteer working there!
Esther K — Google review
Impressive exhibits that are changed on a regular basis so there are new things to see every time I go. Wildflower/ pollinator/ rain garden with plants native to the area. Local artists represented in the shop. Wide range of classes available. I have taught classes there and was impressed with the entire organization.
T N — Google review
A bright spot in our otherwise cold, dreary time in Bemidji: beautiful facility; fine Native-American-leaning art; fabulous gift shop; and nice people who let us in even though they're "closed" for mounting new work today.
Jeffrey W — Google review
Watermark Art Center is a stunning art center in Bemidji. The exhibits are always provoking with a focus on Ojibwa /Annishinaabe artists also. I always take guests here if they come to Bemidji, it is a showcase place. You will not be disappointed. I love it!
Donna H — Google review
Beautiful artwork throughout. I recommend a visit if you're in the area.
Liddy J — Google review
Big city art center unexpectedly placed in a small town. I wasn't expecting it to be as nice as it was. Impressed by the level of artwork there
Eric T — Google review
While visiting Bemidji from out of town, we were looking for a way to take in local art. We were so glad when we drove by and discovered the Watermark Art Center, especially on a cold and blustery day. It is a bright, beautifully and thoughtfully curated gallery space. When we visited there was a very sweet exhibit featuring works from local middle- and high school students. There was a beautiful space dedicated to artists sponsored by Bemidji State, and another space with works done by a local indigenous artist. It was lovely to see such a wide variety of artwork. We really enjoyed our time there. The person who greeted us gave us a warm welcome, explained the different spaces, and informed us that the gallery changes every couple of months. So, the next time we visit Bemidji, this will be at the top of our list of stops!
Missy I — Google review
This was the first art museum I've ever stepped foot into, and I was apprehensive at first, but I was greeted with very friendly staff, beautifully made art, and a bright atmosphere. The talent in the Bemidji area is outstanding! The gift shop features all local artists and the pieces for sale are amazing.

Paul Bunyan & Babe the Blue Ox Statues

Mentioned on
9 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Tourist information center
Located in Bemidji, Minnesota, the Paul Bunyan & Babe the Blue Ox Statues are a well-known roadside attraction listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 18-foot tall statue of Paul Bunyan and his 10-foot tall blue ox, Babe, make for a perfect photo opportunity. Visitors can also explore the Visitors Center to learn about the history of Paul Bunyan and view various artifacts. Additionally, there is a playground for children to enjoy.
Visited on 7.8.2025.... Awesome roadside attraction regarding the legend on Paul Bunyan. Definitely worth the stop and photo opportunity!!

Very nice park located on the shore of lake Bemidji. Great photo op. Visitor center staff very informative. Downtown Bemidji across street. Plenty of local eateries(not chain restaurants) and shops.
Diana H — Google review
Lovely well keep landmark of historical importance. Make sure to stop. Maybe even charge your vehicle while you visit. Gift shop closes by 4pm, but the restrooms are still accessible after business hours. Not quite as large as some roadside attractions, but still a fabulous sight to visit. Nice place to relax and stretch the legs after a distance of driving, right here at the Lakeshore. Even the JW Witnessing cart was spending some relaxing moments while we were here.
Leo L — Google review
Lots to do here if you are family oriented or outdoors type of person, there is a playground as well as trails to run/walk. Good night seeing rest stop! Bathroom available in doors and lots of amenities within walking distance

We found this tourist attraction on our Google Maps app. We were looking for something to see while driving through Minnesota on Highway 2. This is just about 5 miles from the highway & simple to get to. There was parking for several cars & spaces for RV’s which we utilized with our motorhome & tow vehicle. Great playground for the kids and a beautiful visitor center and grounds leading back to Lake Bemidji which is where the Mississippi River begins. A fun stop to break up the driving monotony!
Paula L — Google review
Great site seeing spot by beautiful Lake Bemidji. Great park next to it for the kids to play, plus a cut shop with Paul Bunyan merch

Beat little rest stop and visitor center. Little knick knacks and stuff for sale and cute displays. Get you picture on Paul's cell phone in there

Lake Bemidji State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Lake Bemidji State Park, located in Beltrami County, Minnesota, spans over 1,600 acres of stunning pine forest and offers a range of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy camping, hiking on picturesque trails, fishing, picnicking and cross-country skiing during the winter months. The park's prime location along the north end of Lake Bemidji provides easy access to water-based activities such as kayaking, boating, swimming and fishing.
Looked like great amenities! The lady at front gate was friendly and helpful. Only went for a drive and one trail but loved this park! Whoever is managing it is doing a fantastic job! Very peaceful, great options for trails, boats, camping, picnic sites. Gorgeous views!
Cat — Google review
I visited Lake Bemidji State Park for an evening hike on the Hiking Club Trail. Finding parking was a bit confusing at first—I usually rely on AllTrails for directions, and while they’re usually spot on, this time, it didn’t lead me to the exact location. While figuring out where to park, I had an unexpected encounter—a coyote locked eyes with me before casually going its own way once I stepped out of the car. That definitely made me pause for a second, debating whether I should go ahead with the hike. It was the off-season, not many people were around, and the evening was setting in. But after driving all that way, there was no way I was turning back without finishing my hike, haha! At the entrance, I noticed plenty of cabins, and it seemed like quite a few people were staying there for the season. The hiking club trail started off as a decent woodland path, but midway through, it transitioned into a bog walk, with informative signs along the way. I even saw some rabbits darting through the bog, which was a nice surprise. The trail ended with a scenic lake view, making for a peaceful finish. The bog walk was visually interesting, but if you’re looking for a more dynamic hiking experience, it might not be the most exciting. That said, it’s an easygoing trail with great scenery, perfect for a quiet, peaceful hike—hopefully without any more coyote standoffs, haha!

Had a fun 4 days despite the June 21 2025 storm. The staff was great helping out folks after the storm had passed. While some things were unavailable there was still plenty to do and we enjoyed our campsite. It is definitely a place worth visiting and the camping area is very nice. The shower and restroom area is centered in the campground. Well lit at night so easy to find. There are also vault toilets available and are closer for some sites. Lots of water points so filling up is very easy from your site in most cases. Will definitely return and highly recommend a visit when in the area or as a vacation destination.
Jerome L — Google review
Enjoyed a day there with the family! We walked with my sister and her baby with a stroller and it was very accessible to do so. So that was a plus! The ranger station is very informative. And the bog walk was very nice, lots of plants to check out!
Shayla W — Google review
Site 90 was lovely and private. Large picnic table and fire pit. The campground roads were really bumpy and needed grading but that was probably due to the recent storm. Beach and water were very nice, comfortable temperature. Bathrooms were clean with separate changing rooms outside were a nice touch. Bike rentals and adjacent trails make this campground extra special!
Shannan P — Google review
We loved our stay here. From hiking trails to the beach, everything was maintained well. There were several events for young children, encouraging outdoor activities.
Liddy J — Google review
Beautiful sunsets over the lake. Camp sites are hit and miss and quite close to one another. Was here on a full moon in October which was gorgeous.
Travis H — Google review
Great place to camp at especially in October when the leaves are changing colors. Lake is clear and beautiful. Don't forget to get to get your state park stamp at the park entrance. Beware Bogsquatch is around the area too.

World's Largest Tiger Muskie

Points of Interest & Landmarks
I enjoyed eating my ice cream and taking pictures right next to it! Great sight to see and if you around totally recommend stopping and grabbing a quick photo!
Aliyah A — Google review
If you’re in town late at night on a full moon, there’s a chance you see the Big Muskie quietly lurking in the alleys and side-streets of Nevis. Don’t be frightened though. He’s only looking for small tourists and stray cats. Throw him a handful of Werther’s candy and run. Man, he loves those Werther’s.
Shawn A — Google review
Giant Muskie you can take pictures by. Behind it is a place for get-togethers with restrooms and seating. Behind the building is also a great little park for kids. These run along the Heartland Trail. Nice place to stop for a rest if you're traveling along the trail. Close by are stores and a restaurant, and a place to get ice cream.
Shelly R — Google review
Huge and historic Tiger Muskie statue in downtown Nevis. You will love this quaint lake town with charming shops and restaurants. This tourist trap is worth a detour!
Alex G — Google review
A fun detour. We stop to see every "Biggest.." park. Some cool restaurants in town, too.
Frank L — Google review
Kids saw this and had to stop...my favorite was when they saw a bees nest in the mouth and I managed to get their reactions on camera.
Karysa H — Google review
Fun, quirky stop along the Heartland Bike Trail. Great pitstop for a restroom, beverage, and photo op with the world's largest muskie. Great fun! Worth the ptistop to this small town.

Forestedge Winery

Wineries & Vineyards
We are from Michigan and were on a bus cycling trip, thought we’d check it out. Is it a winery if all the “wines “ are made from fruit, not grapes? 🍇 Well worth m not sure 🤔! The wine was delicious and it had great service! Beautiful setting, lots of seating outside. Do wish they had an indoor restroom, only porta potties were available for guests. But otherwise worth the stop!
Cheryl B — Google review
We gave 5 stars because we think it's definitely worth visiting. Having said that, it lacks a couple of features some 5-star wineries have. While the patio seating is super quaint and well-maintained, there is not a scenic vineyard view. The outdoor seating is lovely, but we did not see any indoor seating. So, I'm not sure what happens in inclement weather. The staff were pleasant, attentive and informative. The flights were very reasonably priced. They came with crackers, water and a chocolate. There was a very large selection of wines. None of the wines are made with grapes, which made for interesting flavors. We enjoyed all of our tastes and purchased 2 bottles to bring home.
Pamela C — Google review
Great place to visit. There is a wide range of wines and it was a real pleasure going through the tastings. Only 5 dollars for tasting of 7 wines. We found a few we really loved!!! The store is really neat and the people there were great. A must-stop if you are in the area.
Eric K — Google review
Visited on 10-18-2019 a very fall like day. Windy and about 55 degrees. No indoor seating so we found a neat little table on the patio. We finished one bottle that was really good. We tasted first inside. Seven little wines. Some I liked some not so much. This is a very unique place. Can you believe none of their wines are made from grapes. Try this place we were pleasantly surprised. I added some pictures. If you like zinnias, can you imagine what those beauties would have looked like before the frost got them. I’ve never seen zinnias that tall. Someone has very green thumb.
Joe R — Google review
They're wines are sooo good! Grow and harvest some of their own fruits! The store wasn't open, but the owner came out and allowed us to purchase what we wanted. That's service!
C M — Google review
Great little winery, no grapes! All the wines are fruit based, but none from grapes. Pro tip: if you want something that tastes like a more transitional wine, the Black Currant is the best option. The rest taste like the fruit they list, and all are a unique spin on wines. Def worth the visit!
Andy H — Google review
Beautiful setting, did the tasting even though we have never seen a winery with that high of a price for 5 1 oz tastings. When they came to ask how we liked I indicated there was one wine I couldn’t even drink but instead of offering me something else they very snottily indicated many others love that wine. We decided since it cost so much for the tasting and no credit toward purchase we would just pay and leave. When we didn’t add a tip to the tasting price the person working said out loud verbally what you didn’t like your service. You aren’t leaving a tip! We were very insulted as the two tastings were $26 already and we felt the customer service was lacking. We will never return!
Holly S — Google review
Delicious samplers. Owner's are exciting to talk to about the wines and making process.

Fishing Charters & Tours
Outright Angling offers an exceptional fishing experience with Phil, who is known for his expertise in the Midwest. Despite challenging conditions, Phil ensures a successful and enjoyable day of fishing. He not only provides guidance on casting and fishing techniques but also shares insights into birdwatching. Whether it's learning about muskie fishing or understanding the habitat and structure of fish, Phil's wealth of knowledge makes for a memorable outing.
Highly highly recommend Phil! My husband and I did a 2 day guided trip aiming for muskie and multi species. We learned so much. Despite the first day being a little brutal with the wind and rain, Phil still did his best in getting us out and teaching us the ropes. Landed my first ever muskie, and on my birthday too! Best 30th birthday gift! Thanks so much Phil! Definitely will be contacting him again for future guides!
Cindy H — Google review
Highly recommend. Phil took 3 of us out muskie fishing for our first time. Taught us the ropes from casting the giant rods and baits to figure 8's at the end. Learned what structure and habitat muskies are relating to this time of year, but also the why. Phil is a wealth of information and a great teacher. Caught a beautiful 40" muskie and saw a few others. Very memorable outing.

Awesome guide service....always a great time with Captain Phil! He works hard to get u on fish and is a wealth of information! Thanks for a great experience again! 5 times using your services and we will see you again!
Deb R — Google review
We had the best time fishing with Phil on May 26th during a crazy 40 degree temperature swing. Despite tough conditions, Phil put us on fish and gave us the experience we wanted. We casted lures, experienced many types of casting and fishing that we asked for and thoroughly enjoyed our day. He is also a bird expert, added bonus! The most knowledgeable fisherman I have met in the Midwest. Spend a day with him and you won't regret it.
Meghan S — Google review
Phil took three of us out fishing for the day. We caught two great Muskies and had a wonderful time. He knows the lake really well and studies the fish patterns to put you in the best situations to catch fish.
Sam C — Google review
Wonderful morning fishing with Phil! He has a lot of knowledge about the area and fishing! He got us on walleye and we caught our limit, I even caught more than my hubby ;) Great way to spend our anniversary morning, Thanks again Phil!!

Phil is great. Knows the lake. Can find the fish. And most importantly is a really nice guy that helps out in every way the whole time you're with him.

Northern Lights Casino

Casino
Casinos & Gambling
Gaming hall for poker, blackjack & more, with a hotel, live entertainment & multiple dining options.
Went for Midland concert last night.venue is OK for casino...concert was super. Great band
John L — Google review
Casino is visibly in disrepair from the outside as you drive in. Trees and bushes and plants are overgrown, not maintained. Parking lot is in poor shape. Gaming area has poor ventilation in most areas, and smoke is very prolific. I had to wash the walls and headboard covered in black dirty handprints in the room. Pool was out of service, but we had a king with jacuzzi room. Sunday morning, when I decided to relax in jacuzzi, I discovered the jacuzzi button was not working. We checked out early, and I asked for a discount on room because of amenities advertised and paid for not working. The "lead" person at check out came out, took info, and told me that I would not get a discount because I did not use the jacuzzi the night previous and call to have fixed! She doubled down on that and inferred that it probably was not broken. I was truly appalled at the level of customer service as I was willing to have maintenance check it since it was 35 minutes before check out.
Lisa L — Google review
We went in to eat at the restaurant. 2 servers for 4 to 5 tables. Waited 20 minutes for service. Then waited a hour for our food. We shared the dinner special of full rack of ribs with 2 - 1 trip salad bars. The ribs were drenched in sauce, the baked potato was luke warm at best. The roll had mold on it. When I brought the rolls mold to the attention of the server she took it with no word or apology. She then came back with two rolls still no apology. They only checked on us once. Then when we went to pay she did not remember what we ordered and asked us what we ordered. Also my wife mentioned that we didn't have a great experience, again no apology or offer of a discount. An excuse of "oh were busy". And we will not return.
Robert C — Google review
Spent money didn't win anything & we were bored, but not really casino people.
Donna M — Google review
I generally enjoy myself when visiting here. Most of the casino and hotel staff are both personable and helpful when approached. Other guests are usually fun to play with and talk to. It's great to have the buffet back. The chef prepares excellent food here, as well as at the Dancing Star! Make sure to go on BBQ rib night as these are the best ribs I've ever eaten at a restaurant since Smokey Bill's in Brainerd closed many years ago. Waitresses are also great and quick to help. The staff is always on the quick, and ready to make sure your dining experience is a pleasurable one. Kudos to the buffet staff! I don't usually spend the night here, as it's just as easy to drive home, but I have averaged about 7 nights each year for the past 9 years. In the past you were asked if you wanted toiletries, and if needed, you were given some. You could also get an extra coffee from the front desk. This was changed when they added in-shower dispensers to their rooms. On several occasions since this implementation, dispensers were either empty or not functioning. Last month when a friend of mine ended up staying as it got late, I was told that two of these dispensers were not functioning, the water in the shower never got warm, and one of the beds had bedding that had not been changed. Even at their discounted rate of $65, this should not be acceptable. Therefore, I would recommend checking your room as soon as you check in and not waiting until you're naked in the shower! All in all I enjoy Northern Lights, their food, staff and the camaraderie with other patrons. I will keep returning on a regular basis.
Karmie D — Google review
Had been there many times over the years. We are from Iowa. Had not been back for five to six years till now. How things have changed. Bad decision. My wife and I love to go to casinos. We are retired. First time I have had zero fun at a casino. Win or lose made no difference. Just the hospitality of the employees was bad. No employee seamed to care if you were even there. Was ready to go to my room at 8:00 and call it a night. No fun. No one was rude but the entire staff was unpleasant. Didn’t seem to really care if you were there or not. Got up the next morning and was glad to leave and not come back. Sorry this nice large casino has gone this direction. Been in business all my life and learned that you never take customers for granted. Northern Lights Casino and Resort needs to explain this to their employees. Sorry for a bad review but just had to say how I feel after many earlier trips to Northern Lights that were enjoyable.

Definitely won't be spending my money here ever again. I've stayed here before, no charge, in my camper van, but they now wanted $45! To park overnight. HA. That's ok, Too bad, I would've played at least $50-$100, plus had a nice dinner. Instead, took myself down the road to free parking and better food anyways. The below pics are from my FIRST visit back in 2022 when they DID let us park for FREE! Will NEVer be back!

Went there Wednesday night for the BBQ buffet. Let me tell you what a let down. We got there had to wait to be seated for over 10 mins keep in mind they were not busy in the least and the ribs were dry and crusty and everything else looked like it had been sitting since they opened the buffet that night. And our biggest let down was the ice cream machine wasn't working. we paid 23.99 to be disappointed with flavorless, dry crusty old food. Maybe the casino is down on their luck. We go out to eat 2-3 times a week and never have I been this disappointed and irritated about an ear experience.

A great day to hike in the sunshine. So beautiful. Easy paths to more challenging. Except for a couple ice fisher-people we had it to ourselves. My first time here and I will be back for sure.

Ideal space for learning and retreat, set in the gorgeous Northwoods. The clean energy and other sustainable features are a great opportunity for learning not only for youth but the adults in our group as well. The building needs some updates (especially to the carpeting) but it is comfortable and functional. I'll definitely return.

Excellent opportunity for learning about Minnesota and the north woods. Many displays of local wildlife, the environment, geology and more. Beautiful walking trails around the learning center. If you stay for a retreat, it is being like taken back in time to your middle school days and the retreat you went on as a kid. The hard bunk beds and cold mildew showers will ensure a unique time travel to your preteen or teenage years- hence the 4 ⭐️s.

Went skiing and did the Winter Rendezvous here. The cross country skiing was nice, the trails were well maintained and were groomed. Trail diversity was good. The staff are all knowledgeable and friendly. The Winter Rendezvous was really fun, basically an event with a bunch of reindeer games like curling, Atl Atl, sled pull, archery, axe throwing, etc. There's also a visitor center with a variety of nature information and a gift shop

It was such a fun experience for kids to see, learn, and explore. There was a lot of walking and climbing, but the kids really seemed to enjoy it. My son loved building a fire with his group and a shelter!

Schoolcraft State Park

State park

Campground
Hidden Gem, quiet and secluded campground right on the Mississippi. Sites are wooded with fire ring and picnic tables. Great place for tenting or smaller travel trailer/class C rigs. The are a few sites that would handle larger units. Drinking water spickets and vault toilets located throughout campground. Lots of hiking trails, boat launch/dock right on the Mississippi with truck/trailer parking, a very nice picnic area with tables, drinking water and bathrooms A very peaceful place located about 10 miles from Deer River and 15 miles to Grand Rapids.

I visited Schoolcraft State Park to complete the Hiking Club Trail. Since it’s the off-season, the place was completely quiet—almost deserted. Unlike many other state parks, this one doesn’t have a visitor center, and given its small, secluded nature, I’d recommend visiting with a hiking buddy rather than going solo, especially in quieter months. The park is heavily wooded with pine trees, and I even came across a fenced-off area protecting white pines, which was interesting to see. On my way there, I spotted a couple of deer, and a posted sign reinforced that they’re frequent visitors in the area. The trail offers a decent view of the Mississippi River along a portion of the route, adding to the park’s peaceful atmosphere. The campground is right at the trailhead, with additional camping spots along the trail itself. If you’re looking for a quiet camping or hiking spot, I’d recommend visiting in summer or fall when it’s likely to be livelier. Otherwise, if you prefer solitude, this could be a great off-the-beaten-path escape.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this state park. “Rustic” can mean many things when it comes to MN State Parks. At this one, it means quiet (when not a holiday weekend or weekends during peak season), clean, grassy and shaded sites, brand new vault toilets, and small (24 small sites total, no elec). Please note, this is NOT a campground that can accommodate big rigs, it says so on the park website. Turns are tight and sites are small. I witnessed someone pull in with a 35-40 footer and cram it into the smallest site. First, it didn’t fit, second it looked ridiculous. Come on. The hiking options are limited, but nice. The only other activity here is boating/kayaking. If those are not your activities, bring books, games etc or look to other parks.
Todd M — Google review
Very serene and rustic park. Trails were really nice and adventurous. Reminded me of my childhood running through the woods filled with pines. No running water bathrooms - main outhouse sits in an open area and bakes under the summer sun (gets really smelly by 10 am). There's no park ranger or hostess on site. It wasn't clear who to call for assistance (either for issues at site or a concern about another camper). The entrance had wood available to buy which is great because there's no gas stations nearby. Our site was tucked up against the tree line and had many large trees branches fall down on us. Nothing concerning just something for other campers to be aware of when setting up tents.
Sarah C — Google review
A small park but with spectacular scenery along the Mississippi River. The only person I encountered was a retired ranger who volunteers once a week for special projects. We got chatting and watched a mink swim from one bank of the Mississippi to the other. This park is clearly less visited. Every single raspberry bush was dripping with ripe raspberries so I had quite a feast as I walked around. Campground was completely empty which I have never encountered before in midsummer. Definitely worth a visit.
Carrie W — Google review
Peacefull, quiet, and small. You could be the only person here. Feels more like a large county park. It would be far better with a little TLC from the state. This place is basic as it comes, rustic no amenities but is well maintained. Does have nice river views and very large white and red pines. Very nice campground but its rustic. The river and trees are the main attraction. It needs a playground or swim beach being there is no shower building.

Nice and quiet park. Small, with only 2 miles to hike, terrain is easy and flat. Main campground spots seem to be well spaced out, more than your average park, and the group camp spot is in a nice location, shady, grassy and with river views.

If you love Minnesota History this is an amazing place to come visit. They have a recreated logging camp with time period people working. There is a cook house, blacksmith shop, Saw Sharpening shop, they have working Clydesdale horses, showing how logs are handled between men and horses. A great place to spend a couple hours. A great place for kids to feel and see history. Plus a real fire tower that you can climb to the top and a great museum.
Terry J — Google review
What a neat little logging camp! We felt like we’d stepped through a time portal everything was so authentic. Very knowledgeable staff to guide us through and share some of Minnesota’s interesting logging history. We really enjoyed getting to meet the horses as well. Highly recommend you swing through if you’re in the area!

Hidden gem especially if you have kids. The video / display of the fire was extremely well made. The actors in the logging camp is a must see.

It’s 10 bucks for vets and active military to go on the tower, 12 for adults, definitely recommend the tower, but do wear closed toe shoes if you do wish to go on the tower, and definitely hike to the camp as you get to see where and how the people used to do stuff, employees know what they are talking about and do great job of explaining the history behind everything, they have great service, they have many things to do as in horse carriage tour, canoe tours and much more it’s very beautiful. Definitely recommend adding it to your stop. If you have dogs they do ask that u keep them on leash.

Excellent place to visit. Don't pass up the opportunity to see this place. I highly recommend the kayak guided tour on the Mississippi River. Our guide, Chloe, gave us an excellent two hour tour. We stopped and looked at a bald eagle's nest. The parents weren't around, but we saw the young one peeking out at us. Later, it hopped out of the nest and onto a nearby limb. We got up close to a beaver dam and learned all about their life. Chloe had several show and tell items to present during her talks. She had a replica of a bald eagle's skull, their talons, a beaver pelt, beaver tail, beaver skull, etc. She explained the various parts of these animals' anatomy and how it favored their survival. We also paddled up to a nearby dam where we learn the history of this and the sister dam. It was a fun experience. Don't pass this opportunity up. Also, there is a 100-foot fire tower on site that you are allowed to climb to the top. Do it! You won't regret it. High above the trees you can see forever. Typical of the Minnesota Historical Society, the museum is excellent. We didn't get a chance to see the logging camp. It was late in the day, and we were worn out from the kayak tour. So, we have a reason to go back again soon. All in all, a great stop.

Took my preschool grandaugters here. Had a great time. We were there for 2 hours and never got bored. I was very impressed at the variety of interactive experience stations. Also impressed at how clean and orderly it was. Nice touch to request the kids wash their hands before they enter. Lastly, I was impressed that each station was sponsored by one or more local businesses. That speaks volumes about the community.

Me and a friend drove an hour and a half to experience the museum. We are both teenagers. And we love the play area in the aquarium so wanted to go and do this. We get to the front desk and the front desk lady LAUGHS AT US then says adults can’t go in. When we are very much not adults. Then continues to charges us for both the Judy garland and the museum after she said we can’t go to the children’s museum. The sign outside says FOR ALL AGES. Sure maybe small children come more often but that doesn’t mean you can’t just deny older kids then still charge us for it. Specially when there is no age limit posted anywhere. Ruined our entire day.

It's an interesting place. Educational learning and play for young kids. Some things are so cool to challenge and educate, others are just of play and fun. Worth the stop if your in the area. I will say it's not for older kids, I believe children over the age of 10 might be a tad bored after awhile, but it's definitely worth the experience.

Judy Garland Museum

Sights & Landmarks
Collection of Judy Garland & Wizard of Oz artifacts, with an interactive kids' museum & gardens.
I am SO happy I got the chance to visit this museum and Judy Garland's childhood home. It was such a beautiful experience. Firstly, the cashier was extremely warm and welcoming. She answered all of my questions and just overall really seemed to enjoy her job (my receipt says Sheena R). Second, the museum section was incredible; it had so many things I wasn't expecting. Everything seemed so well preserved and organized neatly. The floors and displays were very clean and well-kept. When I saw the carriage, I nearly cried because it was just so beautiful, and I have so many childhood memories attached to The Wizard of Oz. It's a bit of a bummer when it comes to the slippers, but it's totally understandable. There is one ruby in a glass case near the carriage which I thought was great. The home portion of this place was magnificent. It was so well-managed and clean. There seems to have been a ton of work that's gone into it. The shop seemed to be very fairly priced, and they have so many different things (t-shirts, pin, magnets, books, mugs, matchbooks, and so much more). Some of the negative reviews here are so frustrating to me because this museum is truly great. Some negative reviews state that there should be more Oz items than the other "stuff," but of course there will be other things here other than Wizard of Oz because Judy Garland was much more than just Dorothy. Other reviews say it's more pricey than they would like based on a large group size. In my opinion, the price of admission was more than fair. If I ever make it back to this part of Minnesota, I would definitely stop back here (hopefully for a guided tour next time). Thanks so much for this great memory.

The Judy Garland house is very well restored and gorgeous. This is also where you’ll find most of the information about Judy Garland’s life. I highly recommend this part of the museum. Unfortunately, the entrance to the museum is an uninviting bland building. When you enter, it’s not at all clear that you will get to see the house because you can only see into an unappealing room of shabbily displayed memorabilia from her movies. The desk to buy tickets is also the checkout for the gift shop, which bizarrely doesn’t used bar codes, so if you happen to be behind someone buying a bunch of things you need to wait for the clerk to search for each item, type in the quantity, etc. We waited about 20 minutes, maybe more, to buy two tickets. In fact, we walked out once thinking it couldn’t be worth it. But then we saw that the house was beautiful from the outside and that it was connected to the entrance on the back side. I would still recommend going but don’t be discouraged by the poor presentation at the beginning and be sure to see the house.

Spur of the moment trip while passing thru Grand Rapids. Not a huge fan of Judy Garland just because of my age. I knew her role from Wizard of Oz and brought my 13 yr old daughter with to check out the museum. My opinion I thought it was expensive to get in...$24.00 for 2 of us. It was neat to see props from the Wizard of Oz, learn what happened to the Ruby Slippers, walk thru her childhood home and see other memorabilia from her. My daughter enjoyed the F1 tornado simulator the most which is outside before you go in, it cost $3.00. I would recommend to visit especially if your a fan. I would recommend that they lower the admission price at least by a few dollars.

It was an enjoyable experience! It's set up very nicely. I loved reading about her life, seeing all kinds of memorabilia, and walking through her first home. They even had a scavenger hunt sheet to use, hunting for clues to the answers....get a discount at the store if it's completed!

Hill Annex Mine State Park

Park
It is an awesome place to visit. The park is open on Friday and Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This park is going to close next year if someone doesn't come in and take over it. Although they aren't running the tour bus because it was sold due to lack of funding, it was still an enjoyable visit. The tour guide that normally went on the bus was available to tell history and interesting stories about the park. This mine produced the majority of iron that was used in World War ll. A visitor from Japan came to this park specifically because he wanted to see the park he had learned about in school in Japan. He said his teacher talked about the Hill Annex Mine and it's historical significance in World War II and then asked a question. How would history have been impacted if this mine had been located in Japan? Or Germany? I would think that the Minnesota Historical Society or the State of Minnesota would want to preserve this historic site. The Hill Annex Mine is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. The park needs updates, but it is an investment into our state and national history. I hope by sharing this story we can raise awareness about this park and not only preserve it for future generations but preserve the unique history it holds within it's boundaries.

We took the fossil 'tour' which involved a short bus ride to an exposed hill face where volunteers with a paleontology project gave a very brief explanation then let the group look for fossils on the ground among the stones for an hour or so. Be prepared for muddy knees and bottoms. Our family with 3 and 5 year olds lacked the patience and understanding to know what they were looking at... they just wanted to go for a hike. Others in the group had better luck and found some ancient shark teeth and shells. We were disappointed this tour didn't allow us to see any part of the mine. The small visitor center and museum were interesting. We will visit again for the historic mine tour. There are no hiking trails or other activities to do in the park. There is a nice playground and picnic are right outside the park gate. Tours are only Friday and Saturday, ending Labor Day weekend.

We passed by this location over the Christmas holiday, but unfortunately it was closed for the winter and there was no access to the park. However, there is a well-maintained trail nearby, the MESABI TRAIL, so you can purchase a pass and explore the vicinity by bicycle or other means. I would like to visit again in the summer time.According to the park website 2022, the hours of operation are as follows: May 25 - Sept. 1: Friday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The park is closing down, sadly enough. It's gonna be open for the rest of 2022, but the guy I talked to said the place was closing next year. Anyone who is interested in geology and history should go to this park however. The guy who I talked to seemed to be very enthusiastic about the place. The city of Calumet will keep the part of the park that's still open however. It's hardly ever open and gets very little traffic.
Luke G — Google review
While the tours of this park may be long gone, and likely not to return, there was much to learn at this park. Both members of staff where incredibly friendly and helpful, and made my travels from the cities well worth the adventure and conversation.
Jacob G — Google review
My husband and I decided to go on this tour based on another review. The tour guide, Lauren, was very knowledgeable and friendly. It was obvious he was passionate about his job! They stated the tour takes 90 minutes, but allow for some extra time. Well worth the $10 tickets. This tour was a jump back in time to an old, successful mine that has now filled up to become a 300 foot deep lake. With old antique equipment, an air conditioned bus, and a museum, this should be a for sure sightseeing stop if you're in this area.
Hallie S — Google review
Drove 3.5 hours to get here and it's closed. Website down for some reason. No phone number listed. Google said it was open. I guess it is only open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Also found out they will not be running the bus tour this year because the bus is broken down.
Dave C — Google review
When I came here, all I knew was I should do the bus tour. So, okay, I paid the $10, looked around the small museum, and went onto the bus with a guy who was chatting about how iron forms. The bus trundled down an iron-rich red road, we got a brief glimpse of the lake now filling the mine, and went past some old equipment rusting in place. Great, this is all I get for my money? Then he let slip that he worked at the mine itself, and started sharing stories about that. Then we rounded a corner and found entire buildings, miles of conveyor belts, gigantic mechanical systems, bigger and bigger equipment rusting in place, ore everywhere for the taking, and more and better views. At one point, we went up to a crest where loaded trucks went up to the top, dumped what they had for sorting, and left. The entire sorting facility was visible, and that was amazing. Then we went down into the valley and drove right through the sorting facility. ... All I'll say is, this is still a woefully incomplete story. It's a 90 minute tour, I'll say allow 2 full hours, because we actually took a bit more than that. And I didn't mind - best extra time I ever spent. Take the tour. Spend the money. Be awed.

Savanna Portage State Park is a gem! Site 45 offers a fantastic view of the lake, making it a perfect spot for a peaceful getaway. The park boasts numerous well-maintained trails that are great for hiking and exploring nature. Loon Lake is a highlight with its beautiful beach, ideal for swimming. A nice fishing pier can be found on Lake Shumway as well, just steps from Site 45. They also have some great backpacking sites, that include a shelter and sometimes come with a cache of wood. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors!

Had a fun weekend camping here to visit Duluth during the day. Turns out the state park has plenty to explore on its own, including its namesake, a historic portage trail used by the voyageurs. The family checked out Loon Lake and we did the interpretive bog walk on Lake Shumway as well. The park was quiet and great for family camping. Fantastic fall colors on display. Will definitely camp here again to explore some more!

Although beautiful this is not a family friendly state park. Camp spot are way to close, trees need trimming in camp site some just balancing on branches could fall on campers or tents or people. Restrooms and showers need a good cleaning. Trails need work Although some of this is due to rain. Swim beach no restrooms or water no handicap access to anything. Could be a great park. Seemed like to much pot use in camp ground with small children present. We bailed early friends got trapped in campground by fallen tree. Not good forestry practice there.

Greyhound Bus Museum

The Greyhound Bus Museum is something that you should add to your list of things to do if you are in Hibbing, MN. Plan to spend about an hour to two hours looking around. The older you are, the more likely you will enjoy this visit. Us older folks will recall the days of the Greyhound buses coming to our small towns and taking people to far away places. It was a heady period, and it provided many people a way to see the country that they would otherwise not have been able to do. It was interesting to see how Greyhound Bus got its name and the evolution of this company. While we were there, someone pulled into the parking lot in a converted 1958 Greyhound Bus. The bus had been converted into a motorhome. It was beautifully restored, and this was an extra fun thing to see. Out in the back of the museum, it looks like they have several Greyhound buses waiting to be restored. Plan on driving on a short distance from this museum and see the Hull-Rust Open mining pit. It is less than five minutes up the road, and it is free.

All of the buses are beautiful and so fun to look at! It’s amazing how far the bus designs have come over the years! My favorite part of the museum, though, was all of the old Greyhound ads hanging on the walls... it’s something many may overlook, so be sure to check them out!
Brittany S — Google review
I have to give this place 5 Stars! The cost is $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family! It's SO worth it if you love Greyhound Buses, old vehicles, their history & chrome! If you were a kid again these buses would be your school jungle gym in this museum! Everything is at your fingertips when you climbed aboard these huge retired gas motored camels of the Northern Midwest that eventually became a Nationwide Icon!! "Go Greyhound!" As a teen I remember my siblings & I traveling out of the Minneapolis or St Paul, MN hub many times to visit our Grandparents that lived in other states (North Dakota & Missouri). It was much cheaper then flying and I must admit, the bus stops along the way were quite interesting as well as the people we met! Take the time to stop in, I admit the museum and it's grounds are showing some wear & tear so please DONATE! Remember, you have free range to explore the buses outside and then come on in to see the restored buses through the decades inside, all the uniforms the drivers wore over the years, the photos & statues of the actual dog, the greyhound "Princess" that started the brand logo and the story as to how the Greyhound Bus Company started along with so much other info! I honestly wasn't sure how I'd feel about the place since the museum never truly made my list of "places to see" and doesn't have a multitude of reviews going for it even though they are mostly positive. Obviously my opinion has completely changed. If you ever rode the Greyhound Bus, once, twice, many times or was born and raised here in Minnesota take the time, spend the $5.00 (or the Family price) to check out this wonderful little museum in Hibbing, MN!

My grandchildren enjoyed all the buses. The history of Greyhound exceeded my expectations.

This museum takes you back to the origin of a legend: the Greyhound Bus Museum in Hibbing is small but fascinating. Historic buses, artifacts, and a story of innovation and adventure make it perfect for a nostalgic and educational visit.

We had so little time to visit here, it was very worth the stop. So much history here, and we were able to board the busses running before our time. Great museum.

There's much to see and do with the museum, trolley, mini golf, the homestead and the rest of the grounds. The trolley ride was fun and informative with an additional little tour exhibiting the life of a miner and his family. It was very interesting to learn about the history of the area. The scenery is beautiful. Mini golf was a nice end to the day. This is a great family attraction.

Really well done displaying history of the area. Has clean bathrooms. A great play area for children tucked away in a corner that has only one entrance to ensure kids are secure. Many of the exhibits are on the first floor with a conference room on the second floor. Handicap capable

We did the Trolley Ride Pumpkin Festival with our grandbabies and it was great. A perfect amount of time for the Trolley ride, and then 1/2 hr to explore the historic site and pick some pumpkins. We had a great lunch at the Food Court right before our scheduled Trolley time. There was also a little petting farm! Fun memories made!

We loved the trolly ride unfortunately didn't have time to go through the museum. If you habe a family of 4 or more the pass is likely more worth the money for you!

Decent place to visit with kids. We couldn’t take the train ride due to time

This is a very neat place which is much bigger than it appears. Very informative and interesting. By far, the highlight of our visit was the trolley ride. Roger (our guide) was very knowledgeable and presented a great deal of history and facts like a pro. We learned so much. They also have a fun and challenging mini golf course. We are so glad we stopped.

Moose Lake Depot & Fires-1918

Convention information bureau
Museums
History Museums
A small but interesting museum and antique shop in the old train depot buildings, plus an additional house display where orphaned children lived after losing parents in the most horrible Minnesota fires in the history of the state. Museum includes old footage of survivors stories on a documentary for PBS.
Jolane S — Google review
We enjoyed our visit to the Depot. It was well curated and shows many artifacts from the days of the fire in Moose Lake.

If you love small towns and there history you will enjoy this museum. It is small and informative the volunteers are very nice. Great price for the size of the museum. I would go back again.
Brenda M — Google review
You can't park your trailer here anymore if you are riding the Soo Line trail. Based on an experience I had last year at this depot, I will not be spending any money in the Moose Lake area when I ride my ATV on the trail.
Shawn G — Google review
Great local history - 1918 fire, railroad, and they have. Research library with: area yearbooks, newspapers, obituaries, cemetery info, family research files.. Staff will even do the research for you. They also have an event center people can rent out.
Cara K — Google review
AMAZING. Wow. So many artifacts and personal effects. The donated Red Cross Home that you can walk through is like stepping back in time. Beautiful place and tribute to the poor souls that were lost and a testimony to the strength of those who lived and rebuilt
Marcia A — Google review
I was expecting a nice bit of.detail about the terrible fires of 1918. I was also expecting a $5 family admission as advertised on Explore Minnesota Web page ( May through October 2015). Reality was that 90% was like a county museum with a slight focus on railway related artifacts. There was one small corner of another room where all of the fire information resided. The Hinckley fire museum is much better and is worth seeing. Also, apparently rates increased as there was no family rate- only a $3 per person rate so my family of four cost $12 rather than the advertised $5. I showed the Web page to the attendant but he didn't know what to do. For me personally, it was not worth the trip to the museum, if learning about the 1918 fire was a priority.

Moose Lake State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Secluded destination for hiking, camping, lake fishing & swimming, plus a geological center.
Not a bad little state park. Great campground. Plenty of picnic spots and ample room for bigger crowds. Lake perfect for fishing bass and crappie. Great Lake to kayak or even canoe. There is a sandy beach you can swim at .
Marcelle A — Google review
Our stay last week was fantastic! The camping sites are large with plenty of foliage between them for added privacy. It is a great park for families with lots to do including swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and hiking. There is also a geological center at the ranger station to learn about agates and other rocks found in the area. The campground host, Joy, was AMAZING when we had a reservation issue. What a tremendous asset she is to the park! The little town of Moose Lake is less than a 10 minute drive away with everything you could need (except for a big box store). We will definitely be returning!
Kelly H — Google review
We have been in Minnesota for over five weeks, and we have visited 13 of the 64 state parks so far. All of them have been jewells, and Moose Lake State Park is no exception. The visitor center has the best geology exhibit that I've ever visited (and I've been to a lot). The timeline exhibit and the specimens of rocks and minerals on display are dazzling. This truly is worth the stop to see this. The park is beautiful. We did a 2 mile hike around Wildlife Pond. Don't pass up seeing this park. Even if you only have time to visit the visitor center. The staff on hand was friendly and helpful with our questions.
Kenneth D — Google review
Hiking, biking, camping, learning about agates, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming are all great activities you can do at Moose Lake State Park. This is a great place for families or anyone who wants to enjoy natural surroundings, peace and beauty in a safe and serene state park. Staff and Park hosts were very helpful and friendly. Every space was clean and well-maintained. There were very few people camping when we arrive on a Wednesday. This is a great campground to avoid crowds. We would definitely stay here again. It is not far to get to Jay Cooke and Banning State Parks as well. We especially enjoyed access to the Willard Munger Trail. It is so convenient to have quick access to Moose Lake for supplies or food.
K H — Google review
Moose Lake State Park is a solid state park with well maintained trails, a great beach and picnic area, great campsites, excellent fishing and boating on a fairly large lake, and great nature all around you. As far as Minnesota state parks go, it's not one of the more exciting or unique parks that the state has to offer. The trails are easy hiking with nicely maintained and wide open paths, but I prefer the trails in parks that are a little bit less accessible and have some difficulty and terrain changes. This is a great park if you have little kids and a stroller. The fish is pretty top notch here too.
B A — Google review
Cool little state park. The Agate and Geological Center was fun to check out.
Jenny C — Google review
Small state park that is very easy to access off interstate 35. There's only a few miles of hiking trails and a small drive-in campground (three loops). Our site, number 5, was on an incline which was extremely annoying for pitching a tent but ended up saving us from floating away during the downpour of rain. The toilets aren't very easy to access, kind of a walk, but were very clean (no hand sanitizer in the primitive toilets). The campsite host was extremely friendly and kind. We rented a canoe/paddles/life preservers and enjoyed paddling around Echo Lake all weekend. It's a very popular lake for fishing and tubing. Some of the folks in motorized boats weren't respectful and sped through creating massive wakes for the kayaks and canoes. We spent a lot of time at the beach and experienced several large family groups that were fishing and swimming with highly inappropriate behaviors. I tend to always rate state parks very high, but the negatives overshadowed the positive at this park. The park rangers were awesome - huge shout-out to the lady rangers that helped with firewood and the canoe!!
Sarah C — Google review
This is a fantastic little park right of 61. The trails are easy and wind around the little lakes in the park. Make sure to stop by the agate center when it opens up again for an excellent lesson on the geology of Minnesota. The beach on Echo lake is very nice too! The Hiking Club trail is on the other side of the road from the Ranger Station - make sure to check out that half of the park!

Black Bear Casino Resort

Casino
Casinos & Gambling
Black Bear Casino Resort is a modern resort with comfortable rooms, dining options, and indoor pool with sauna. Guests enjoyed their stay for a Rick Springfield show, praising the room, buffet, and entertainment. The casino offers a variety of games and machines. While some areas may need updating due to wear and tear, the overall cleanliness and non-smoking environment were appreciated. Staff were friendly and helpful despite limited dining options on certain days.
Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet. One of the things we appreciate most when staying in a hotel is when they do not have the room doors that slam shot. The buffet on Saturday nights is excellent. I don’t think I have ever had a better buffet selection. The food was all good. The staff and service was excellent from the time we checked in until the time we checked out. Last but certainly not least we accidentally left two jackets in our room when we checked out. We live down in Minneapolis And it would have been a very long drive to drive back up there and then back home just to pick up our coats. Thankfully, the staff was able to mail our jackets back to us, which was really appreciated. Thank you Black Bear Casino for everything. We will definitely be staying there again..

Always have a good time going to the Black Bear casino. The buffet is very good, with rotating days. The deli is also very good, with great Waffles. The machines are fun, and kept clean. Never had a problem with staff. Attended my first real concert here on 6/13/25. Saw ZZTop. Had an amazing time!

I completely enjoy Black Bear Casino. The people that work there provide excellent, hometown customer care that you just don't get in large cities, yet you get that big casino feel with all the bangs and whistles! The food is great, and I believe my fun waiting staff has something to do with it, every time! I have fun playing, and it's a great night out for my fiance and I every time. Thanks Black Bear Casino, you do it right! (P. S. I've never stayed in a room due to being local, but I gave it all props anyway).

Wonder buffet. Prime rib was excellent, asked for rare, and that's exactly what I got. Staff was extremely kind and helpful when I stopped for the night to avoid driving in fog. I will stop here on my next trip up north.
J.R. G — Google review
We stayed there for 2 nights. Tues & Wed nights. We've never been there and will not return. It wasn't a big deal that there is no valet or bell hop, or restaurants open, or pull tabs were closed, and so was the bar. It was more about how unfriendly the entire staff was we encountered. Check- in staff didn't say a word to us, just literally handed us our room keys. When we finally were able to eat at the buffet, they asked us how we intended to tip our waitress!!! If we were going to put it on our card as we were paying to eat, or if we were leaving cash on our table!!! Not only were we not allowed to seat ourselves at the buffet but we waited at least 10 min before we were brought to a table, even tho there was no line!! We counted 4 different staff members step over a huge pile of piss at one of the buffet tables. We know it was piss since we seen an elderly man do it!! We found children's toys left under a chair in our room. How the house keeping missed such a big toy while "cleaning" I guess we'll never know. The staff is lazy and unfriendly. This was our 1st and very last stay. Very disappointing, we love getting away and staying at casinos. This is one we just won't be adding to our list.
Shell K — Google review
This was our first stop on our vacation, one night. Great staff, check in was quick and easy. The casino is large, great selection of all the new slots, card tables. The gift shop has a great selection of snacks, necessity items and of course nice gift items as well with a friendly staff.

I visited the Black Bear with family to eat at their buffet. WOW! It was amazing. The prime rib was great. A lot of great food. Good service for as many people as we had. Played blackjack and I have never played with free splits and doubles. It made for a great game. Winning always helps as well. Everyone in my family won. The casino was clean and is very fun. We will return when in the area.

Checked into kiosk for Thurs all you can eat buffet. Waited too long and when we finally got into eat, the crab legs were a disappointment ( we have had crab legs all over the US.) They were over steamed too much. There was also no buns or bread. Over all driving 3 hours we would 2 out of 10...

This experience was amazing!!!!!!!! We did the ropes course before rafting. The ropes course was a lot of fun! It was not busy and there were challenges for all skill levels. We had Justin Brown as a guide for rafting and he was the best. We did get stuck at one point but it’s because we were just messing around a lot (this was the best part of the trip). The waves are super high at the end of May/early in the summer!
Sarah W — Google review
I was really looking forward to going white water rafting, especially after speaking with the gentleman on the phone. He was patient, informative, and took the time to answer all my questions, which gave me a lot of confidence before we even got there. When we arrived, the three ladies at the sign-in shack were just as friendly and helpful. What stood out most to me was how focused they were on making sure everyone understood the process—not just for fun, but also from a safety standpoint. I really appreciated the way the staff in kayaks guided us, giving us clear heads-ups and reminders throughout the trip. That kind of attention helped a ton. The experience itself was absolutely exhilarating—riding through the rapids with friends was so wonderful. Our guides, Margo and Thea, were incredible. They were both friendly and supportive the whole time. At one point, during the last rapid, my friend lost his balance and fell into me, and almost knocking me out of the raft. Thankfully, Margo and my wife reacted quickly and grabbed me before I went overboard. Special thanks to Margo for that! Honestly, the whole trip was so much fun I was ready to go again immediately, but we had to check in our hotel and grab dinner. I just wanted to say thank you to the entire team, especially Margo and Thea, for making our first rafting adventure such a great one. We’ll definitely be back soon.

We had a blast rafting on Mother's Day! The water was cold, but the sun was out and we all had a great time. Some of us even swam for fun! The guides were very informative which helped ease the concerns that some of our group had. We had good, clear instructions which allowed our group to have en enjoyable time on the raft. We did the upper St. Louis river and flows were reasonably high!

I have yet to go to Swift Waters, but I can confirm the customer service is good. I did schedule for tomorrow and the weather was looking cold. My friend is sensitive to the cold but we were past the refund / cancel window. I called yesterday and left a voicemail. Today, a day before our reservation, Cliff with Swift Waters emailed me letting me know he cancelled the reservation and issued a refund. That’s great customer service, and we are excited to check it out later in the summer. Thanks Swift crew.
Lucas R — Google review
We had a wonderful Father's Day trip at Swiftwater Adventures! Our guide Fletcher was super knowledgeable about the St Louis River and our tour and the scenery was amazing! Highly recommend and we plan to ride the waves again. Thank you Swiftwater!

Could not have asked for a better intro to whitewater rafting then Swiftwater provided. It was fun, well organized, safe, and a perfect day trip. Cheers to the staff, especially Bruce, for ensuring we had a memorable experience.
Eric K — Google review
What an amazing experience! We had an 8 year old with us and he did great, our guide Siri was very professional, respectful, and knowledgeable!! Recommend 10/10! We will be back!
Ryan S — Google review
Really fun! The only thing I am complaining about is the description on the website. Most of the guides are around 16 years old when on the website it said the guides had 30+ years of experience. Also there are different sized tubes, so if you get the bigger sized tube you aren’t going to feel as much rapids as the smaller sizes, which unfortunately was what happened with my trip. Also just to mention, there are like 5 rapids total. Still, I think it’s a decent price for what it was. Everyone’s super nice here.

Beautiful state park. Hiking is awesome and the river rapids area is stunning. Our dogs loved swimming in the shallow pools that form. Campground areas were great. Bathrooms are updated and super clean. Staff was very friendly. Will visit again for sure!

Simply beautiful area, really amazing rock formations and river views. Thomas graveyard is a blast from the past, I really enjoy visiting the century old Graves and walking the less crowded trail. I also drove up to a few outlooks and enjoyed the drive from south to north.

The perfect location for a state park that isn’t on the North shore. Nestles right before you head into Duluth, with the Saint Louis ripping right through it. I’ve been here many times on my way to/ from Duluth but this visit was special. On a weekday, low visitors and peak fall colors. It was stunning. Plenty of places to pull over and park to view the views

Love this park. Great unique rock structures, plenty of rapids to see. Short gentle hike to get upriver. Less able hikers can take the well manicured path. More able hikers can take the roots and rocks path. Cool bridge over the river does bounce a bit.
Rob P — Google review
We only had a short time to spend in the park. Took the road into the park and stopped at the Old River Inn. Walked over the suspension bridge and took some pics. For those with little ones, some of the rocks are slippery and sharp. Would love to go back and explore more.

Great place to visit or camp. Early August the bugs were not bad. 🦟🪰The campsite🏕 we were at was perfect. Flat, lots of space and close to both the water and the latrine. Each site was full so it was a bit loud at night. Tons of hikioptions for both short and longer distances. The swinging bridge was crowded even on a Monday late morning/ mid-day. There was a place you could plug in your phone charger🤳 by the bathrooms. Showers were nice, hot water. The naturalist did some fun info activities. 🦔 Best part was if you happen to forget your tent poles like I did you only have to travel 15 minutes to the nearest Walmart for a new tent. ⛺️

We loved our visit but were surprised when we showed up it said the park was full and to come back another time. We ended up taking the Munger trail in and we often were the only ones on trail so I'm not sure how it was "full"? Maybe it was just the parking lot?

The area boasts an impressive 700-foot vertical drop and features eight lifts, including a high-speed quad, as well as 22 runs and two terrain parks spread across nearly 200 acres.
Incredible bike trails, wow! I'm so impressed with the place. Thanks for having some pedal up options, and the new blue climb trail (name TBD) and beam me up Scotty blue flow trail down (rides more like a light blue/dark green especially in comparison to everything in the actual bike park rating scale) are amazing! Kuddos to the trail builders and the business, keep it up 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Our kids were 5 and 3 when we visited last fall. We didn't know for sure what to expect so only bought the minimum to try out the coaster. Our kids LOVED it so much I wish I had planned some extra time here. When we go back in the future the all day pass will be so worth it!
Briana L — Google review
The Coaster ride was super fun and a little scary during the quick turns. The line was crazy long with about 40 people in front of us. It took about a minute per person for the line to move...guessing. the scenery was amazing during the ride. It was fairly easy to get on and off the ride. Im a bigger person. My husband is very tall and he fit fine. It was easy to control the carts.
A E — Google review
Not worth the money. Paid for the unlimited ride package (4x $50) and didn’t get to ride more than once on each ride. Lines are ridiculous! Over 1 hour per ride. Waited less time for a Disney ride. If they can’t handle the business they should limit the amount of people can visit each day! Money and time wasted!
Ramze R — Google review
Spirit Mountain is irresponsible for overselling adventure passes and single tickets for Friday October 17th. Wait time for the Alpine Coaster 2.5 hrs and the zip line 1.5 hour plus. Terrible customer experience and will not visit again during this time of year. Spent $200 for nothing. Save your money and time. Ridiculous.
Matthew D — Google review
went just to wait in line for an hour, then the ride closes for an emergency, then told to wait in the 2 hour alpine coaster ride before close, then wait another 45 minutes in line to get a refund. I feel for the employees, but going just to wait in line for 2 hours and get nothing out of it sucks. wouldn’t recommend going on a saturday, or getting tickets in advance.
Kelsey M — Google review
If you buy tickets online it's cheaper. 10 for $100. We also got free mini golf. We did the alpine coasters over and over. I am plus size and I fit in just fine with no safety issues. I was also able to do the zip line
Amanda K — Google review
Waited in line for the coaster for 3 hours and then when we got to the front they closed the ride due to a malfunction that lead to a medical emergency. Then they wanted us to wait in the refund line. I would not recommend coming unless you want to waste your time.

Zoos & Aquariums
The Lake Superior Zoo, located in Duluth, MN, is a medium-sized indoor/outdoor attraction that offers entertainment for visitors of all ages. The 19-acre zoo also features a small playground and picnic space for families to enjoy.
We booked a tour for the brown bears and it was an amazing experience. Feeding a carrot to a 1,000 pound (super adorable) predator is something I'll never forget. Tundra's breath was remarkably fresh! They were really hamming it up and being silly, I'm glad we got to see them before they tuck away for the winter. Even out in their habitat, they were fighting the snoozers trying to keep awake. Sweet dreams, guys! I've visited many accredited zoos. LSZ felt like a more private experience and a celebration of the north. There's a lot of native animals that are normally overlooked in zoos with bigger exotics, though there were still some beautiful non-native creatures like the snow leopard. The climbing areas are seriously impressive, I've been in bigger zoos that didn't offer that much vertical space. Every keeper was genuinely excited to talk about their animals. It was pleasant for us adults, but there were also children that looked like they were having fun at some sort of educational experience. This is a really special place that deserves more funding.

Genuinely speaking, if I could give negative stars, I would. These animals are not getting quality care. Nearly all of the exhibits are horrifically overgrown and unmaintained. Most of the exhibits don’t have clean or fresh… or literally any water. The cougar’s water area was bone dry, the bears had green water, the birds had mud puddles. The lion’s exhibit is absurdly small. None of these animals seemed happy at all. Most of them had zero enrichment in their exhibits. Oh! And most exhibits had no shade. It has been hot and to have no clean water or shade is neglectful and honestly abusive. If you can’t care for these animals properly, give them to a zoo or refuge that will. They all seemed so depressed. I have never been so disgusted by a zoo in my entire life.

My family and I got to see alot of animals that we have not seen at the Como or the Minnesota Zoo. This was nice because we actually got to see the animals. It looked like they were upgrading some of the exibits, and I think they could use some funds to upgrade a few more. One thing I think they could work on would be the signage. It was not real clear on which way to go for certain exibits. Overall we had a nice time.

I cannot describe to you how horrific the conditions are here. There appears to be little to no maintenance and smell was so foul. There is a reason you have to pay outside of the building. Almost every single exhibit is incredibly overgrown or it has hardly any vegetation at all. The pathways look like the weedwacker broke 5+ years ago and they didn't bother to buy a new one. There are dead trees and branches all over. Every exhibit that had water in it was gross. Most of the plexiglass was so scratched up or damaged/dirty that you couldn't see the animals. Several exhibits were closed. It appears the kangaroo just escaped? There was caution tape and missing fencing. No signage about repairs though. The signage to get around the zoo was incredibly unhelpful. I felt like the tribute statues to the polar bears, rhinos, etc. were there to tell you that it used to be a 'nice' zoo. Overall, very dissatisfied with this trip.

A fun place to visit, but definitely grab a map, the paths can be a little confusing. We enjoyed exploring for a couple hours on a beautiful fall day.

A very nice zoo with lots of animals to visit! I especially loved watching the adorable and playful river otters and the red panda! So cute! We got to see a tiger, lemurs, goats, prairie dogs, otters, a kangaroo, and many other animals. A great place to visit!

Great experience and a wide selection of animals. We came during the day in October, it was 65° and we're able to see nearly every animal that was out.

Great place to see the zoo animals and have a good family experience. Some animals did not look very active due to the size of their closure but still, you see the animals.
