Really enjoy going here. They always put you on the fish.

I mean the quality of the rooms isn’t the reason for a 1 star review instead it was the fact that the owner keeps his dogs locked/Kenneled up behind/next to the rooms. And last night those dogs wouldn’t stop barking from ~1130 pm to 2:30 am. We had to repeatedly go out and yell at them to shut up just to get 30 min of silence before they started up again. And it wasn’t like 1 bark a minute it was like 10 barks in 45 seconds. For . Hours… Outside the dog barking for hours, the rooms are okay for the price. There’s a microwave fridge and stove with burners to cook on. Bathroom was what you’d expect from ~70 buck a night stay. Although you only get soap no shampoo. I’d stay there again if the owner moved his dogs or locked them up with a bark collar
Matt B — Google review
If you enjoy fishing and hunting this is a place for you. The rooms are not fancy but do the job for sleeping and getting out of the weather. Mini fridge included TV, microwave and more.
Nate C — Google review
We used just the guide service for walleye. We did not stay in the motel. The owner Allen was a real nice guy, we called only a few days in advance and at that moment they were able to accommodate us. The guide we had was great, all the boats were nice, caught our limit by 1pm, they cleaned the fish for us and bagged them. At the end there was a nice snack table with refreshments! Great price and nice people- would book a guide service here again without hesitation.
Peat M — Google review
We've used guides here and bought bait and supplies here. It's one of those places that could use updates, but it just wouldn't be the same if it got them. If that makes sense. Gary will always give you just enough info that you should catch fish. We'll likely stop here every time we fish the area.
Derek K — Google review
Stayed here 09/06 and 07 2023 , it's not perfect but the owner and family were so nice and have free beer and drinks , it's the best I have ever slept in a motel !!!! , I'm from Ohio and it was a once in a lifetime to visit South Dakota and glad we came across this motel , happy fishing everyone and hope your stay was as nice as mine was.
Susan F — Google review
The room was very outdated. Stains on the blankets, bed and bathroom walls. Toilet seat had some fecal matter smeared on it from the last guest. I thought that was a stain too until we wiped the seat. The whole toilet was unclean in general. A screw sticking out of the headboard.
Rebecca W — Google review
Would hit zero stars if I could. First off the website does not match the price on hotel and the fishing guide. The beds were terrible. The pillows were terrible, you could smell the last person who had slept there's breath. The beds had dirt and mud under them cearly never been cleaned. We found trash and pop bottles under our beds. Our room was directly behind a dog kennel nothing like hounds at 3 am. All of us woke up with bug bites. The door is not sealed properly, you could sticks fingers out of gaps. Would never let my wife stay here, you could easily record under the door. If you are using a card you will be charged 4 dollars per swipe. Parking is a nightmare can't imagine what it would be if all the rooms were full. The only thing I can say that is good about this place is the guide. Even that was a let down with the limit being 4. Honestly not worth the price would recommend going somewhere, anywhere, else. Maybe more variety of fish where the guide took us got nothing but walleye and lasted 2 hours. Don't go here. Picture I took didn't give true nature of how bad it was under the beds inch thick of dirt and random trash.

Great food I loved the whiskey steak. Local friendly vibe. Tip them good they're awesome
Adam — Google review
Perhaps this is more of a "locals" hangout (we were first timers here and felt a bit out of the loop). But the food was great! The whiskey marinated steak was flavorful and cooked absolutely perfectly. All the food was so good!
Traveling R — Google review
Visiting SD from UK we were looking for authentic USA. Charlys is just that. From the George Strait Bud Lite sign to MNF on the TV. Chatting to one couple they told us they drove 20 miles for their meal (on a Monday). A good selection of fried food, entrees and burgers. Local delicacies such as gizzards and Rocky Mountain Oysters Friendly service. Local beer, including tall glasses, plus cocktails and spirits.
Ian M — Google review
Surprise, rode find. My wife had stuffed shrimp and I had the steak special. Very rarely to I order steak at a restaurant. For some reason I did and it was absolutely perfect. I have paid a great deal more at fancy places to have way less quality. The price for this piece of meat was more than reasonable and cooked perfectly. Fantastic out of the beaten path place.
John B — Google review
I asked for my steak Medium Rare, came out more med well well done. I suffered through some of it. My husband had liver and onions, was done like shoe leather. I think the cook needs to go on you tube to figure temperatures out. Everything else was good.
Karlene U — Google review
Mediocre, overpriced steak. Waitress that had to be reminded multiple times to bring items that were included in the meal cost (salad, veg, bread that never arrived). Basic local bar with dining area.
Seely G — Google review
Great Hamburger Steak, my friend had the ribeye and he loved it. Great old school laid back atmosphere. Waitresses was super nice.
Josh Z — Google review
The grilled wall eye needed seasoning. It was supposed to have lemon pepper, but it was bland, and the carrots in the mixed vegetables had been frozen and the texture was chewy. The menu had most of the Mexican food options crossed out.

Dignity of Earth and Sky

Sculpture
Sights & Landmarks
The "Dignity of Earth and Sky" is a striking statue located at Lake Oahe, the fourth largest man-made lake in the United States. The area also features an earthen embankment, outlet structure with six tunnels, powerhouse, and spillway gates. Visitors can explore a clean rest area with ample parking for various vehicles and take time to appreciate the Lewis and Clark exhibit showcasing their travels in the region. Additionally, short trails offer stunning views of the river and railroad bridge.
Amazing, make the time to stop. We stopped on the way out west and on the way back. We really enjoyed the free Lewis and Clark exhibit and the history. Beautiful river overlook Clean bathrooms, water bottle filling station, picnic tables and lots of parking.
Thekla B — Google review
It was a beautiful place you can sit and relax and use the restroom if you need to. They have picnic tables with overhead so you are not in the sun and seating around the statue. I sat and took pictures. You can only stay for 3 hours. It's free also a rest stop. With a cool view of the bridge crissing over the MO River.
Salome M — Google review
Really nice scenic area. Super place. A lot of parking lots for car and semi trucks. Historical place. Inside of the building you can find interesting historical stuff. Nice and clean restrooms. The sculpture is really huge and fantastic. Who created this sculpture and built this place can be proud of themselves. They did a great job. Recommend it to visit
Dobrynin E — Google review
Very nice rest stop, spacious and clean. The artwork is beautiful. Many tributes to history. Unfortunately, the historical section inside was closed for the season.
Mark B — Google review
Dignity of Earth and Sky is a great stop right off I-90—perfect for taking a break and stretching your legs. The statue is absolutely stunning, and the surrounding area has plenty to see and explore. There are shaded areas and shelters that make it easy to enjoy a packed lunch. It’s also dog friendly! While the dog area isn’t anything fancy, there’s a large open patch of grass between the parking lot and the entrance/exit ramp that worked well enough for our pup to get a little exercise. A peaceful and meaningful stop that’s well worth the visit!
Patryk P — Google review
The statue as well as the educational piece of it with the walk through museum is amazing. The view on the top of the hill is a site to be seen. Great picnic table areas for a great meal spot to rest and stretch out. There is a sign to beware of poisonous snakes so be careful walking the paths. If you choose to hike around it.
Chelsea C — Google review
Beautiful, powerful space. Neat and clean. Only regret was that the Lewis and Clark exhibit area was closed for the season at this rest stop.
Jason K — Google review
We drove specifically to see this stunning statue from Kansas, it did not disappoint! While it's a rest stop it's definitely worth the trip! Side note, the rest stop itself is clean and is accessible from both directions.

Chamberlain Lewis & Clark Welcome Center & Rest Area

Mentioned on

Exhibit
The Chamberlain Lewis & Clark Welcome Center & Rest Area is a must-visit gem along the interstate highway system, especially if you're traveling through South Dakota. This rest stop offers a delightful blend of comfort and education, featuring clean facilities and fascinating exhibits dedicated to the historic Lewis and Clark expedition. One of its standout attractions is the impressive Dignity statue, which beautifully honors Native American heritage.
This was probably one of the best rest stops I’ve been to on the interstate highway system in the US. Stopped here in September as part of a cross country road trip. From the clean rest rooms, educational materials and exhibits on the Louis and Clark expedition, Dignity statue, and the scenic views of the Missouri River and surrounding area, well worth the time we spent at this rest stop. If on I-90 in the area, make sure you stop here and take it all in.
Rich T — Google review
Must STOP 🙏🏼 Beautiful place to park and enjoy a piece of American history. The statue was breathtaking. For sure an instagramable spot. Nice short walking trails that lead to a beautiful panoramic view of the Missouri River. Currently the welcome center and bathrooms are closed due to some renovations. They are providing portable toilets. Lots of parking for big trucks and RVs.
Liz D — Google review
One of the best welcome centers I’ve ever been at! The staff is extremely helpful and friendly! The bathrooms are clean and operational! A lot of history you can learn about here and even a little trail to see the Mississippi River!
Zackary C — Google review
This is a great spot to stop on a road trip. There is lots of benches around outside. Inside the visitors center there is a little exploration area - great for kids. Lots of good information to read about. There is a small gift shop. The bathrooms are spacious and clean. Outside you can follow a path to a scenic overlook.
Abigail B — Google review
Great place to stop as you drive across the state. Great views of the river, nice information center and it was wonderful to stretch my legs
Chris J — Google review
One of the better rest stops we've been to. It's a ritzy town that don't too much like "outsiders" but over a good area to stop and check out. The river is awesome and a great way to cool off, swim and relax too.
Kevin W — Google review
This is a must stop going West on 90 before you cross the River. It’s the entrance to the ole West of the USA. The views are dynamic & the history portrayed there is intriguing. Great place to stretch your legs & do some exploring.

Busted Nut Bar & Grill

Permanently Closed
$$$$affordable
Bar & grill
The food at Busted Nut Bar & Grill was incredible, and the breathtaking view of geese flocking to the marina added to the mesmerizing atmosphere. The hardworking waitress went above and beyond, ensuring that drinks were never left empty even during busy times. It is definitely a recommended spot for a lunch date! For a late dinner stop while driving through South Dakota, Busted Nut Bar & Grill proved to be enjoyable with its above average bar food and good selection of beers.
The service and food were both excellent. Glad we stopped. Highly recommend!
Sue C — Google review
Stopped here for a late dinner while driving through South Dakota. Really enjoyed it. The food was above average bar food. The beer list was small but good. The atmosphere was great. Seemed like a real friendly local hangout.
Wesley W — Google review
Amazing food. The view was mesmerizing with the geese all coming in to rest on the open marina water! Out waitress was phenomenal ran her little booty off and was even concerned on refilling our drinks once she got busy, and we never did ask!!! Would recommend for a lunch date!!
Bryttani D — Google review
Service was terribly slow. Food wasn't great. 2 in party ordered grilled fish, one was good one was very fishy and almost inedible. The child in group had a typical burger. And the birthday dad had bbq ribs that were tough and cold. There was also a large 'cattle' fan blowing air and it was loud and cold. The price was steep for the experience.
Anna K — Google review
Got there at opening, the lady at the door didn't know their winter hours. It was cold all throughout dinner, the music was loud. It's definitely a bar setting or place for large groups the best part was the food.
Sam T — Google review
We had 3 in our group 1 fish 1 burger 1 Ruben. The server was awesome. The food was great. The beer was craft and a reasonable price. Great experience.
Jeff C — Google review
Stopped for lunch on the way to Sturgis. We all got burgers and salad bar. Great, friendly service, amazing burgers and crisp fresh salad on the bar. And a good view of the water. Definitely would recommend this place!
Jason K — Google review
Atmosphere was like a typical dive bar. Salad bar was unimpressive with just some iceberg lettuce, 2 or 3 other toppings and dressing (I didn't waste my money on it, but it was only $5) and no soup. Other food was mediocre and french fries overcooked. Taco bar smelled good, but some of the ingredients looked sketchy. Will not go there again.

Silver Dollar Bar

Bar
Silver Dollar Bar is a roadhouse-style bar located near Chamberlain in Oacoma, South Dakota. It offers a casual dining experience with a variety of pub grub, including burgers and breakfast options. The bar features pool tables, darts, and video lottery for entertainment. Additionally, it welcomes private parties by appointment after 4 pm all year round. The restaurant boasts a quiet yet casual dining room with original paintings and large windows that provide an intimate setting to enjoy Western cuisine.
I'm really not a "bar guy" but my wife and I went to Silver Dollar Bar because we were told the food was good and it was. The first time we went was after lunch hours but before dinner so there wasn't many customers. The staff was super nice and the service was fast. The burgers are awesome and so we're the fried mushrooms we had as an appetizer. Today we went back around 6 PM and there was a pretty good crowd inside. Just like our first time the staff was all smiles and our food came out quickly. If you're ever in Chamberlain South Dakota you really should drop by Silver Dollar. Who knows, you might just win a jackpot on the slots while you're there.
CW M — Google review
My boyfriend and I live in Dubuque Iowa and we were in town for work and this was the first place we stopped at and we went back again the next day for lunch. Amazing staff and atmosphere! If we ever get around this area again, we will definitely be back.
Tiffany W — Google review
Tried a mushroom Swiss burger the first night we came here, the second night the establishment treated us all to a rib dinner, all the food was top notch, the staff was very friendly and the drinks were icy cold. The atmosphere is great too, love the barrel bottoms mounted to the ceiling.
Nate H — Google review
Ordered cheeseburger. Was not impressed with it. Had a funny smell and did not taste like a beef. All other food was good. We ordered two cheeseburgers and took a bite from each and was very disappointed. Told waitress that they were not edible and she said they are fresh and been serving them all day. Thirty dollars down the drain as she really didn’t care about the customer. Usually the food is good. So disappointed.
Lisa B — Google review
An excellent place to take a load off and relax. The porch is so nice! I had a burger and fries and let me tell you, they are excellent. You can tell it's real fresh ground beef that they hand patty here. It tastes great. Nothing fancy. I just had onions on mine (you can also get pickles) but it was Deepak. They warmed and drained the bonds so well and were super generous with really juicy onions. The French fries were also fantastic. Real potato, fried top just the right crispiness. Not over salted. You can add more if you want, of course. The server was also outstanding. It seems like puts up with a lot from the "regulars" big she's still super professional and really efficient. I think she was the only one there and my food came out so fast! I would definitely recommend this place for a good old fashioned burger and beer.
Jenn A — Google review
We hadn't been there for a few years, it's all been remodeled and is very nice.
Randy M — Google review
Tasty burgers and good drink specials. Quiet while we were there, possibly loud when pool or dart leagues/ tournament may be playing.

Incredibly sweet shop run by someone who is passionate about the space and intentional offerings. Cold brew was delicious!
Avery Q — Google review
A great selection of essential oils. I was able to quickly and affordably purchase what I was looking for. But my experience goes so far beyond that. The worker there went out of her way to give us guidance on the best places in the town to see, places that we could go, and things that we could do. She told us about this great view we could find at a nearby park, and it did not disappoint. She told us how to find dignity, both literally and metaphorically. Do not listen to Apple Maps. Listen to this lady. They carry coffee, tea, and various CBD products. Along with unique art and figurines. We were there only briefly, but it touched our heart… In a way that is almost indescribable. I feel like it a part of this experience will always live with me. May your desires always be tranquil!

**⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️** Old West Trading Post is a true gem! This place has something for everyone – whether you're looking for unique antiques, Western memorabilia, or one-of-a-kind gifts. The atmosphere is charming, with friendly staff who make you feel welcome the moment you walk in. I was impressed by the variety of items, from vintage finds to handcrafted pieces. It's not just a store; it feels like a little adventure through history. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit. I’ll be coming back for sure!
Taryn R — Google review
The store has a large variety of different stuff and they are very fairly priced. Owner greeted us and was very nice. Great place to shop.
Hayden S — Google review
Fantastic store with a very interesting selection of antiques. The owner was very helpful and interesting to talk to, and also was willing to make a deal (although prices were pretty reasonable for the most part). The store also had one of the best selections of vintage (not stuff from the last 20 years) children's books/series I have seen in a store recently. I know there have been some medical issues with one of the owners that have caused some closures recently, so I would suggest calling before you go. In reference to a review that called the store dirty, I do not agree. It was full, but not completely cluttered and didn't seem 'dirty' to us. I highly recommend a stop when you are near Chamberlain.
Nancy F — Google review
Absolutely fantastic store! You can easily find some great gifts, either for yourself or others and there's a tremendous book section. Greg and Melanie are happy to help, and very knowledgeable about antiques! I highly recommend the Old West Trading Post! 👍
Bob B — Google review
Lots to look at! Many many books, old postcards, advertisements and atlases. Loots of antique tools, crocks and wooden crates/boxes. Glass cases up front had lots of jewelry, Native American art and collectable currency. The owners are operating on an appointment type schedule, but they welcome a phone call to open up. The Google page for the business has a link to their website that gives info for the latest hours and appointment information.
Aaron B — Google review
The older man and woman were very friendly, but the place NEEDS to be CLEANED. The prices are too high and too crowded to actually find anything. It was interesting to look.

Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center

Mentioned on
4 lists
Museum
History museum
Non-profit organization
The Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center offers a captivating journey into early Lakota life and contemporary art. The museum features multisensory displays showcasing the rich history of the Lakota people, as well as modern artworks from various tribes. Visitors can also explore the riverfront Medicine Wheel Garden for moments of reflection on Lakota directional prayers or visit the Lady of the Sioux Chapel to admire stained-glass windows depicting the Seven Sacred Rites of the Lakota.
The Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center is a hidden gem that’s absolutely worth a visit. It’s free to enter, and while it’s not a huge museum, it’s the perfect size to really immerse yourself in the experience. The displays are beautiful and authentic, with powerful photographs, artifacts, and personal accounts that tell the history of the Lakota people in a raw and honest way. It’s a moving experience that leaves you with a deeper understanding and a somber reflection on history.
David M — Google review
This is a small but mighty museum. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve been in as extensive and beautiful a museum for native Americans and I live in New Mexico, land of many such places. The only downside is that we had only allotted a short time for our visit so and there was just too much to see. Take, for example, this reservation era police man. Wow.
Michael M — Google review
Not many Lakota Cultural centers in South Dakota. This is also an on campus and off campus boarding school that seems to address the cruel history of Catholic (and Protestant) boarding schools in the United and showcases the many positive changes over the years while also leaving one with questions. There are no Lakota elders on the board for the school or museum as I understand it but there is a Lakota parental advisory board. There's the beautiful and thought - provoking works of art in the museum and artifacts from the history of the Lakota people, another section devoted to the history of the school, two gift shops and a meditation garden in the back. To my mind there also ought to be more contemporary art and photography of the children in the current day and age. Lakota people, and all indigenous people of the United States, are still around, adapting and thriving and hanging on to their culture and way of life often against incredible challenges due to the United States government's forced removal of the tribes, breaking of treaties and " loosening the native bonds" of the indigenous population and the American government acting as if the relationship between the American and Native American tribes is like father and son. I spent probably 4 hours there. Plan to spend at least one to two hours. Free parking on site and no admission fee. Handicapped accessible.
Daffodil M — Google review
Museum is well done and worth a visit if you are in the area. The museum is not very big and takes about 60 to 90 minutes to complete. Admission is free. Most of the museum relates to more recent history on the native people in that area. What was lacking was history older than 1850 and interactions with other indigenous groups. There were few, if any, artifacts older than 1850 and focus seemed to be on the people being persecuted by settlers and the government. I would have liked to learn more about precolonial history. They do have free wifi.
R G — Google review
What a neat place to explore! The staff here were friendly and knowledgeable. A wonderful opportunity to learn about the history of the Lakota and support a worthy ministry!
Amanda S — Google review
It's a little gem tucked away. Highly recommend it's small but we were there several hours reading the history and looking at displays.
Ana R — Google review
The walk through the museum was extremely educational. If I'm remembering correctly, we toured the museum clockwise, which takes you through early Lakota history ending in the present day. Learned a lot, very interesting and amazing. Also, areas explaining the schools history in the same complex. The grounds offer great views of the Missouri River. Great place, free to visit. Don't forget to leave a donation. Cool place is definitely worth a visit!

I love this project . People of USA showing their respect to all the soldiers from different area . Also their respect to Native Indian .

Made a quick stop while in the area. You can see some of the famous and honored people of South Dakota. Mary Hart from Entertainment Tonight and Lawrence Welk, to name a couple. Also an installation regarding the Dignity statue which was neat to see. Just a neat stop. Also outside there is a really nice Vietnam Memorial. If you're in the area it's a good stop to see it.

A lovely place with all kinds of interesting information, featuring people of all races, some Native American history (just remember that Native Americans are still around) and exhibits and displays of SD things. Near the highway so worth the time to stop by. Free will donation for admission. Plenty of free parking. Handicapped accessible.
Daffodil M — Google review
I just went in to get some Dignity statue magnets and ended up staying over an hour. The native collection of clothing and such was stunning, the history of folks who have contributed to South Dakota life was interesting.

We came across this place while we were searching for gas station. Nice views out side the building and cool plane model to look at. Didn’t go inside as it was closed.

Wow! Dignity was amazing. The view was stunning. We loved it so much we went back the next day (to get a map) and spent an hour more. The displays were great, but the people at the visitor center were beyond helpful. Definitely a winning stop in our vacation book!

The staff member there, Shawn, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about all the members of the hall of fame. We could tell he paid attention to small details and made our time there a blast. The place looked very clean and well maintained as well.

Well, where to start.... I would give it a 1 star, but the crew did their best considering the person in charge did not seem like she was at all happy to be there, or happy to help out. I came in for 2 coffees and ended up standing there waiting for 20 minutes. There was a cook, a cashier, and a lady behind the counter on her computer. Cashier politely said. "You know there's an order waiting?" And the lady said "yeah"... and walked away!!!! The poor cashier took my order, started one of my coffees, and had 3 people walk in to order. I then had to wait until all other orders had been taken and paid for (understandably). The cook finally stopped making his orders to run upstairs to what I'm assuming is the office, to grab the older lady to come help. All in all, I feel sorry for the employees and I was not at all impressed with the person in charge.

Wow!! This place is a wonderful way to learn a lot about the history of South Dakota!! So much packed into this museum, well worth a visit by anyone, kids and adults alike! They have lots of information for the adults and many fun little interactive stuff for the kids. Admission is free for kids under 17 and adults are $4. So glad we checked it out!! The view from this unique building is also very pretty!

The earthen architecture alone is awesome, a nice little shop inside, and the museum - primarily Native American items - is $8 for out of state and free for SD residents. Very cool. Even though there were almost no Native American people in this area, there are now nine (9!!) reservations in South Dakota. Some may say our history “sucks” but it is right and good that today we honor the past and hopefully are making better history today. Awehe ~ Take Courage

South Dakota State Capitol

State government office
Sights & Landmarks
The South Dakota State Capitol, a neoclassical marvel built in the early 1900s, stands as the seat of government for the state. Constructed with native stone and adorned with marble, it boasts a grand marble staircase and rotunda. Visitors can explore its stately chambers, intricate murals, and even view miniature gowns worn by each First Lady at inaugural balls. Guided tours offer insights into the building's history and significance while self-guided tours are also available.
We had the opportunity/honor to visit the South Dakota State Capitol in JUN_FY2024 and it was an amazing experience, a great opportunity to learn more about South Dakota's history and legacy. We did a plant tour and for sure it's a remarkable building. Definitely, it's a place that deserves my respect. It was a privilege.
Robertson S — Google review
This is a stunning state capitol. It is very well designed, and I loved the central stairs with the stained glass.

Attended Christmas at the Capital 2023 and it was an amazing experience! Beautiful collection of Christmas trees, all donated by various businesses/families within South Dakota. The event is free and took about an hour to see all the trees. The amount of decorations on each tree was so impressive. They even have a sign-in book and it's nice to see where others drove from to view this event. Thank you to the SD Capital for hosting this event!
Daniel R — Google review
Beautiful Capitol building, the marble and murals were amazing. The people were friendly and would answer any questions. We were there on a Friday afternoon so it wasn't busy. The drive was amazing with the sun flowers blooming, just miles and miles of sunflowers.
Steve M — Google review
Very beautiful! There's a nice guidebook to walk you through with some cool trivia in it, like the heart shaped tiles! Also a fun children's activity book. We had a lot of fun exploring this gorgeous building. We have visited a lot of state capitols and this was one of our favorites!
Sarah T — Google review
My experience here was quite good. My mate and I rolled up in our car and parked just a block away with no issues, and unlike many of the other state capitol buildings I have visited, this had no security checks, at least coming through the door we did. All of the rooms were pretty accessible, including the State Affairs room where I testified. The setting was very nice on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River, and the ponds around it looked very cool. I might not visit again to testify, but I am glad I did the one time. It’s close in resemblance to the Montana State capitol because the same design was used, interestingly enough. If you’re passing through, it’s worth even a quick visit.
Kyle H — Google review
This is an amazingly beautiful example is an old capital building. I was fascinated by the casual, relaxed atmosphere and the accessibility of the political representatives. There are wonderful murals in various areas, and a quaint gift shop in the lower level that's worth a visit. Well done South Dakota!
Jon M — Google review
So happy to vist the capitol building inside and out on the grounds. Walked all the levels from the basement to the top floor house and senate chambers, enjoying the marble stairs and pillars. Looking at photo's on the wall of court Justice ⚖ along with the dresses worn by the first Lady of the governor at the time and current husband to Governor Christy Noem. Worth the time to see and visit South Dakota big Home.

Nestled in the heart of Pierre, South Dakota, the South Dakota National Guard Museum is a treasure trove for history enthusiasts and military buffs alike. This charming museum showcases an impressive array of historical memorabilia dedicated to the state's Army and Air National Guard. Visitors can explore fascinating artifacts such as uniforms, firearms, tanks, and various military equipment that tell the story of those who served. The exhibits also delve into state history and significant events like the Civil War.
The docent was helpful in letting me know the flow of the self guided tour. She was knowledgeable and very friendly. Being the only patron in the place it was really quiet but also reverent. I would recommend the tour.

We drove past this on our way around town and the kids kept talking about going to see all the neat stuff outside. We got back to the museum after it was closed, but outside doesn't disappoint. There are many pieces of machinery and equipment to check out. I am sure the inside is just as cool.

If you are in Pierre SD, this is a small niche museum you must see. It's simple but done with heart that comes from pride in service to the Nation. We've come to really appreciate in our travels how much pride the "locals" put into places like this...so, stop by and support this tribute to Americans who served their nation in combat.

St Charles Lounge

Bar
Visited St. Charles Lounge, an incredible establishment with a fantastic ambiance. The bartender, Sophie, showcased her expertise by meticulously crafting exceptional drinks in record time. With over four decades of experience in the Bar/Restaurant industry, I was thoroughly impressed by Sophie's skills. The bar itself exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere that made me feel at ease. Specializing in top-shelf whiskey served alongside perfectly clear ice balls and offering an array of signature cocktails, St.
We’ve rented the back room at the St. Charles for several events— bridal shower, family get-togethers, etc. We have always have great service. Just tell them how many people and what type of event, and they set up all the tables and chairs, including table cloths. Sound system, projector. The owner has awesome hospitality and is professional in how he operates, yet laid back. And who doesn’t like a full bar connected to your event? Or you can close off the space and be completely separate from the bar if wanted. You can bring your own catering or non-alcoholic drinks. Highly recommend, will rent again

This old hotel includes a bar with a couple of pool tables and arcade games and comfortable seating. The hotel is now used for business offices and also residences. It has a great atmosphere with friendly staff. The hotel is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in Pierre. The beer was cold, and the free popcorn was delicious.

We stopped into St. Charles Lounge, it was awesome. Want to give a special shout out to Sophie, our bartender. She did not just make drinks, she crafted them...and crafted them well! She took the time to make them properly yet was very fast at doing it. I have been working in the Bar/Restaurant business for over 40 years and Sophie impressed me. The atmosphere and vibe of the bar was very relaxing, warm, and welcoming. I give kudos to Sophie, and the bar.....had a wonderful experience....!!!

A great place to sit and have a coffee martini on the occasion my girls get together for drinks. Beautiful job. Modern, yet rustic atmosphere. Good music options. Drinks are fun and relevant. I see their specials posted a lot and reminds me of the bar I ran back home in Oregon. This place was FINALLY a fun little bar for the 20-30 somethings in Pierre to go without a bunch of yucky drunks and drama. Dig it.

This is your classic small town bookstore. A little bit of everything, a helpful and accommodating staff, a great atmosphere, and on a quaint downtown street. They can order in anything and have a large selection. They just transitioned from the owners that had it for the past decade or so to new ones, and I'm thrilled that they have taken great care to maintain the great parts from before while adding their own personal touches. If you find yourself in Pierre, you have to stop in.

Bob's Lounge is a long-standing favorite in the capital city, known for its familiar faces and laid-back atmosphere. Visitors from out of town appreciate the welcoming vibe and affordable drinks at this fun local bar.

Absolutely terrible service. The bartenders would not take our drink order - refused to serve us. We’ve been coming to Pierre, pheasant hunting, for 5 years now, and we have never had this experience before. The bartenders, the way they acted towards us, wanted us to leave for some reason. We will be back in Pierre next year, but we will never step foot into this place again. Worst bar experience I’ve ever had.

The daytime bartender was great; however the female that replaced him was terrible. I walked out after she served several people came in after me. She looked right at my empty glass and ignored me. I would avoid this dive bar if you like good service, especially if you tip well for good service.

As someone who worked here part time 36 or 37 years ago, the place hasn't changed a bit. In all my travels, one of my favorite bars in the planet is Darwin's Theory in Anchorage, AK. This is a gem! My spouse seen the outside of the building and was kinda questioning my decision to bring our family here, but this is one of those instances where you shouldn't judge a book by the cover! This place is amazing and the price is perfect for any family of any size to afford to enjoy! We had so much fun! Fun for any age!

This place is great! My daughter and I spent 3 hours here and neither of us got bored. Most of the exhibits change over time, so it was different from what it was 2 years ago. The flower shop/restaurant/veterinary clinic was a big hit with all the kids.

I didn't get her name, but she was so sweet! She told us alot! It's very cool. It closes labor day, so get there before then. Really cool!

Came here from Virginia with my family. Jerry was super welcoming and helpful, he had so many interesting things to say. The museum is small but plentiful in its history. Great short stop if you’re looking for some Wild West railroad history.

We wanted to visit this museum and the website said the museum is open. When we arrived we discovered it is closed for the season.

Small museum, but nice. Super knowledgeable staff.

The 1906 depot was recently found on a ranch and moved back to Fort Pierre, restored, and turned into a railroad museum. A very nice restoration job and many interesting things inside.

An excellent example of how travel by train was in the late 1800's. And the young lady on duty seemed to enjoy what she does.

The Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center Museum, located in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, celebrates the rich heritage of rodeos and their significance to the local community. Named after nine-time World Champion rodeo rider Casey Tibbs, the museum features colorful displays of cowboy clothing, rodeo costumes, and various saddles. Visitors can explore two levels of exhibits showcasing the history and evolution of rodeo as a sport. The museum also houses a gift shop offering South Dakota-made items and Montana silver jewelry.
Many wonderful tributes to many talented cowboys and cowgirls. The photographs are great. The displays such as cowboy clothing and rodeo costumes are still colorful and in great shape. The many different saddles are an interesting display. The two levels of museum displays are easy to get to. Love their gift shop. All South Dakota made except for the Montana silver jewelry. I purchased a necklace with carved feathers made from buffalo bones. The artist is from Eagle Butte. Great place to buy a gift for a special occasion to honor SD made! The parking lot is nice. I like the individual family brands that are burned into the wooden posts as you enter the front entrance. Nice way to pay tribute to the ranchers who developed South Dakota for over 100 years! It is worth $6.00 entry fee.

A wonderful walk through rodeo history!

This is NOT a place that holds rodeos. It's more of a business center. They hold auctions and other things of that sort inside. There are 2 floor levels. Stairs and elevators. Honestly, it seems bigger on the inside than from how it looks on the outside.

You don't have to be a rodeo fan to enjoy this Museum. Lots of interesting exhibits and excellent photographs Plus Great videos of rodeo Riders. Fully accessible to wheel chairs.

Very kind staff, and if you like anything equestrian or rodeo, this place is a must see in Fort Pierre.

The Verendrye Monument, located along Verendrye Drive in Fort Pierre, is a significant historical and archaeological site. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1991, it commemorates the French explorers and traders who claimed land for France in 1743. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of Fort Pierre, the Missouri River, and Pierre from this vantage point.
History is important. From the biggest monuments to the small. Worth the stop if you are on the area!

Great short-stop with wonderful view of Fort Pierre, Missouri River And Pierre. Amazing piece of history showing French fur trappers had claimed land for France in 1743. Before the US had even declared independence.

Nice outlook. Just would of been better had there not been cattle stuff and factories in the way.

Wonderful graphics and details on interpretative signs. Great river valley view.

Beautiful vista of Fort Pierrre SD and Lake Sharpe ( Missouri River). Well documented tribute to early French (1700's) explorers.

I was born and raised in Aberdeen, SD. As a child we made several trips to and through Pierre and Ft. Pierre, and I had the opportunity to see the Verendrye Plate several times. It was exciting to see this historical relic of French explorers and traders in the Dakotas. My memories of the area at that time also include watching the construction of the Oahe Dam, at that time, the largest rolled earth dam in the world, across the Missouri River.

Interesting history and I am sure it was a great place for an archeological dig.

Was a good experience to stand on the very ground of the beginning of the trade era in South Dakota history. Bring your imagination, because nothing is physically left, but I was grateful for the history lesson.
Rick S — Google review
Good basic history about the fort. Small walking path with signs, small corner stand of what would’ve been the edge of the fort. Wish there were some other landmarks or something on the property.

The oldest settlement in the Dakota Territory. The Fort Pierre area has been continuously occupied since 1817.
Leroy F — Google review
Indeed, not a trace visible on the surface but it was there, along with all of its history. To see the fort as it was, one must only imagine! I loved being there.
Mark E — Google review
Very cool my ancestors worked there so it was nice to put a place to my genealogy research

It is an acreage dedicated to preserving the history of one of largest trading posts on the upper Missouri. Of note, it is the starting point of George Catlin's paintings of the North American Indian. He resolved that “nothing short of the loss of my life, shall prevent me from visiting their country, and of becoming their historian.” As of fall 2017 an over look was built to give the visitor a higher vantage point to look over the historic sight.

Oahe Downstream Recreation Area

State park
Nature & Parks
Waterfront campground & hiking area with fishing, disc golf & wildlife, including bald eagles.
Great place for families, was pleasantly surprised by the updates to the shower houses, grass is looking great. Attentive staff . Even when this campground is busy you don't feel crowded. Seems to be like minded folks camping there . The salmon fishing could have been a bit better but hey can't have everything! 😉

After 3 or 4 visits we've noticed that every evening right before sundown unmonitored teens trash the bathrooms and walk around destroying anything that's not bolted down throughout the park. Very nice bathrooms trashed every evening because parents allow their kids to run amuck.. What was a very nice park is being run down by inconsiderate people not cleaning up after themselves, their pets or monitoring their kids to curb vandalism... Very sad! Enjoy don't destroy! Also a lot of people reserve spots & never show, just ruining other people's opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors... This part was written after our first visit - Not to bad a place. Helpful, friendly staff. It's clean and well kept with nice modern restrooms & pit toilets. Tent spots, camper spots & cabins both modern and primitive available. Three campgrounds, #1 is nicely shaded but furthest from water but has cabins that are waterfront, #2 is also mostly shaded & has some spots that are close to the swim beach and #3 is mostly shaded & has some primitive cabins & some waterfront spots. We stayed in cabin #1. Quiet, ok fishing, close to restrooms, spaced out pretty good so your not 10' away from the neighbors.

Very quiet peaceful campground #3. Bathrooms were clean and showers were warm. Wish i would have stayed longer

We loved this park. It is right outside Pierre, SD, so is an easy drive if needing supplies. This is a huge park with 3 campground areas. We stayed in area 2 which was right next to the Missouri River. Campgrounds 1 & 2 are next to each other and an easy walk around them both. Campground 3 is across the bridge and about 2 miles away, but is an easy flat walk. We were able to walk the entire park including about a mile down the trail toward Pierre in a couple of hours. The interesting thing in this park is the time zone. The park sits directly on the time line and officially is on central time, however my phone would periodically pick up mountain time and give me an extra hour! Lol. The bathrooms in our campground were very clean and had great showers. There is a very nice 18 hole disc golf course and 3 horseshoe pits. The staff we met were very friendly and the cleaning staff was phenomenal. We saw them cleaning all the bathrooms throughout this huge park every day. They do a wonderful job keeping the bathrooms and showers nice. The Cottonwood Trail is great and paved. The Eagles Nesting Trail is not paved, but is very well groomed. This is a great park and when we get back to South Dakota we will definitely come back here.

We recently stayed at the Oahe Downstream cabins for Mother’s Day weekend. We encountered a small setback with our cabin arrangement but nonetheless everything was set right by the friendly and fantastic staff there. Sally, Paul and Erik made our stay more than amazing! If you’re looking for a getaway this is the place. We look forward to going back again soon.

First time here and we absolutely love it! Will definitely be coming back. We've tried many spots to fish but haven't had luck. But will not lose hope! Definitely recommend!

Lots of great outdoor activities at Oahe Downstream Recreation Area. There also is a butterfly garden there. Recently manned a booth with a fellow South Dakota Master Gardener at the 8th annual butterfly festival event this past Saturday morning here in July

Awesome park! It's pretty big. There is some small trails. There is a cool spot you can turn down and drive your car practically onto the river which is awesome. It's mostly set up for boating, fishing, and whatever that disc game is but there's definitely a lot of room for walking around and enjoying the weather as well.there is a small playground and there's also a small projection screen that I'm assuming you could use if you brought a projector.

The Pioneer Auto Museum in Murdo is a treasure trove for anyone passionate about classic vehicles and history. With over 275 vintage cars, motorcycles, and farm tractors on display, this museum offers an extensive collection that includes iconic pieces like Elvis Presley's motorcycle and the famous General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard. Visitors can explore multiple buildings filled with fascinating memorabilia, antique petrol pumps, and replica structures that transport you back in time.
Fun stop along I-90. Lots of separate buildings filled with beautiful cars from the past. Worth an easy hour of your time. Or several days, depending how much time you have!

The museum I liked. Lots of interesting exhibits. Walking around and admiring is fine – but I deducted a point due to the inconvenience for photography. Those fences and nets that are about a meter and a half tall – a photographer’s pain. Also, the equipment is packed very tightly. But overall – recommend!

Cool place to stop... Lots of different vehicles to look at. Some were cool, some where okay. People were very nice and i loved petting their little dog they had there. Tons of souvenirs to buy!

Looking for a stop for the day and found this not so little museum collection of cars, tractors, signs and lots more. Walked around looking at things for almost an hour and a half. Big parking lot for big rigs ( we are 73 feet). Nice cafe here to with ice cream. Worth the 14 for adults to get in.

Just so you know the town is very small and everything is walking distance. I am a truck driver, and even though the Pilot/Flying J truck stop is across the street I stayed at the Super 8 hotel. Joined up with the Museum is a Restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and early dinner. The Museum was fantastic. Had cars, trucks, motorcycles, farm equipment and a bunch of other things that had me reminisce of when I was a sprout. $14 will get ya in the door and it takes a couple of hours to check everything out. If this is your type of thing, then it's worth your time. The people that operate the museum were very friendly. Open 7 days a week from 730a to 7p

Very interesting place to visit. A whole lot more than just cars. Nice people there too. Sadly it is starting to feel a little on the old, dusty side but would hate to see it go away. Wish some of the non auto collections were labeled with years and some information.

We have been coming to Murdo for 8 years from Northwest Al.. My son who was 8 at time befriend Cowboy Kevin 4 years ago (12 now), we always ate in the café and he would go talk to Cowboy and pet his dog. This year he wanted to tour the museum. Cowboy has always made the place friendly too all. Can't say enough good about him he treats kids and adults as friends. The museum is great a hidden gem especially if you like cars, trucks and old things of yesteryear. You will see alot of old vehicles you will never see at the biggest car showes. Take time to get there eat breakfast early and meet the great people of Murdo SD. Pheasants Forever 2025 PS take some quarters for some of the old sting puppet showes and self playing pianos.
