Nice dam lake with the beautiful views surrounding the lake with the bridges.
Jeck L — Google review
I visited this place on 29 Nov 2024. There were very few tourists. Traveling here is quite limited if you don’t drive, as the area is quite vast. However, there are buses available. I love this place; it’s more beautiful than I could have imagined. But it takes quite a long time to get here and requires several transfers. If you have time, finding accommodation nearby would make the trip less tiring.

Oct. 14, 2024 2nd monday of October. Sports day. From the parking with the toilet head to the dam Cross to the other side, and in the middle of the bridge, there's observatory. Don't miss it! It's worth going to see the dam structure and miniature.
Miyuu — Google review
It is a beautiful lake accessible by train and bus from central Tokyo in about 2.5h. The lake has a serene atmosphere which is very soothing after experiencing busy Tokyo.
Warre Y — Google review
I came here by bus from Okutama JR station. I stopped at Lake Okutama “奥多摩湖”. Firstly, I surprised about the big lake and it’s beautiful deep blue color. Then I climbed the observatory to see the whole scene of the Lake, the Ogouchi dam, the mountains. It was a bit scary to look down from the window but it was a great view. There is a good atmosphere and a beautiful nature here. I was healed so much from my busy days.
Flymt2moon — Google review
Definitely an must visit place if you are Japan. One of the beautiful places I visited. Prefered time to visit is autumn. You can get busses from Okutama station to Lake Okutama. The journey with mountains valleys and autumn colours will be amazing to see. Get down at the dam and spend sometime there. But the real view comes later take the bus from the dam again and get down at Ideno bus stop. This place seems like no where but if you walk a little 100m from the bus stop you can find a opening that will lead you down hill and directly to the bank of the lake. You can get the best view of Lake and the surrounding mountains from here. It was stony and dangerous but also exciting and thrilling.

Keitokuin

Keitokuin, a Buddhist temple located in Yamanashi, holds historical significance as the resting place for prominent figures such as Katsuyori Takeda and his vassals. This tranquil mountain retreat offers diverse scenery throughout the seasons, making it an appealing destination for visitors seeking solace. Belonging to the Soto sect and established by Tokugawa Ieyasu, Keitokuin serves as a memorial for those who perished, including Katsuyori.
This place is beautiful place. Aside the 3 stones mark of the suicide of Katsuyori Takeda, his son and wife. I recommand visiting in the beginning of April at the time of Sakura.

(Translated by Google) Located where the Takeda clan of Kai died, this temple is a must-see on any historical tour. Although it is old, the information boards are well-maintained and, at least when I visited, it was empty, so I was able to take my time looking around. There is a park parking lot opposite the temple, so you can park there and view the temple and the battlefield monument. (Translated by Google) August 2025 On March 11, 1582 (Tensho 10), a battle with the Oda-Tokugawa allied forces in the Tano area marked the end of the Takeda clan. This temple was built by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu to mourn the deaths of Katsuyori and others. Within the temple grounds are a graveyard and a memorial stone, said to be the spot where Takeda Katsuyori and his son committed suicide. The temple gate, which is said to have survived a fire, is impressive. [Denomination] Soto Zen [Principal Image] Shaka Nyorai [History] In 1582 (Tensho 10), some of the Takeda vassals submitted to Ieyasu and donated the entire Tano district as temple land to establish Keitoku-in Temple, in order to pray for the souls of Katsuyori and his vassals who had died with their swords. During the Edo period, the temple fell into decline due to the absence of a chief priest, but was revived during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644) when a chief priest was invited from Kogen-in. However, at the request of vassals of the shogunate who were former vassals of the Takeda clan, the temple was made a branch temple of Sonei-ji Temple in Shimousa Province. During the Tenpo era (1830-1844), a fire destroyed the main temple buildings, and fires also occurred during the Koka era (1844-1848) and the Meiji period. Mitsumine Shrine

Mentioned on
36 lists
Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled at an elevation above 1,000m, Mitsumine Shrine is a historical and powerful site that has gained popularity as one of the leading "power spots" in Kanto. The shrine boasts must-see attractions including large trees along the entrance path, a majestic shrine, and an ancient sacred tree. Visitors can also witness breathtaking views of sea of clouds during spring and autumn.
Accessed from the Chichibu side of Tama Kai National Park, this shrine requires navigating extremely winding, narrow mountain roads where you’ll find yourself naturally forming convoys with other vehicles for safety. Upon arrival, you’ll pay entrance and parking fees at the parking area before entering this uniquely mystical shrine. Unlike typical Inari shrines, Mitsumine is dedicated to wolves, creating a distinctive atmosphere and offering many wolf-themed items and souvenirs. The shrine is particularly famous for its powerful amulets - you can write your name and purchase specific charms, after which the shrine priests will pray for your wishes using your written name. The scenic mountain setting adds to the spiritual experience, making this a worthwhile stop if you’re exploring the Chichibu area of Tama Kai National Park.

Love this Shrine. Very quiet and peaceful place. All the very narrow roads drove up here.
Juju Z — Google review
Phenomenal shrine up high on the mountain. Can easily drive or take a bus up to the temple with large parking lot, toilets and a few options for food and drinks. Very often foggy at the top, but I preferred the moody atmosphere. I went on a Sunday in summer and it was a cool temperature with few other people. I bet in Fall though it is a leaf peeping madhouse as others have said
Nathan J — Google review
Wonderful huge shrine nestled in the mountains with ample parking space. It does look like a highly respected shrine with lots of patrons listed on stone tablets as you stroll towards the main shrine. The main shrine is flanked by two huge majestic old cedar trees.
Rtexal T — Google review
I have been planning a visit to this Shrine for some years and I was not disappointed. I took the first bus from Seibu Chichibu station. I arrived about 30 minutes early and I was glad because the bus was packed, but I was able to get a seat. The bus ride takes more than one hour as it winds its way up and narrow mountain road. Even on a Tuesday after a rain, many people were making the pilgrimage. The complex is extensive and impressive. Some of the carvings and paintings remind me of Nikko. So much energy and effort go into maintaining this holy place which is quite remote from everything. I had considered driving my car, but I was very glad I did not do so. Now that I have been there perhaps I would drive next time, but only if I were visiting with family or friends. I was able to explore some of the trails, but there are many more options. Words cannot describe the effect of being that high up in the mountains in such a sacred place. People refer to this as a power spot and I know exactly what they mean the one great mystery to me how to stay in lodging. The website is broken so you can’t reserve a room there. The website instructs you to call a phone number but that phone number just rings and rings. There is no recording. I thought to pop into the lodge during my visit, but I let it go because I don’t have any particular plans to stay there at this time. I guess it was just not meant to be, but perhaps in the future. The lodge itself is extensive, and appeared to be open. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit Mitsumine Shrine and encourage you to do so as well. I befriended an international traveler who was a bit confused on how to pay the bus fare in cash, but he was able to sort that out. The bus drivers are true heroes navigating that narrow Mountain Road in those large vehicles full of pilgrims. The whole operation is truly outstanding and I can see why it is one of the great features of this area. Thank you 🙏🎉😄

This is a very important and impressive shrine in the Chichibu area, west of Tokyo. It requires careful planning if using public transport. I visited in July 2024 on a weekday, traveling by car from Kōfu in Yamanashi prefecture. Even so the road is long, twisting and only one road through the mountains near several dams! The shrine is spectacular though not too crowded. It was a lovely summer’s day but not too humid thanks to its elevation at 1,100m. You will be rewarded for your efforts to get there - it is worth it.

The best hiking course with amazing waterfalls that you've never heard of. Turquoise water, wild scenery and very few people. Kōfu Castle Ruins

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Kōfu Castle Ruins, located in Maizuru Castle Park, is the remains of a 16th-century hilltop castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later fortified by Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is one of the most important castles in the Kanto area and offers a unique view of Mt. Fuji in the background. While the castle itself has been restored, its surrounding stone walls are over 400 years old and designated as a historic site.
It's a really nice place, the history is super interesting and the views are great! There was a local free guide who taught us about the caste, it's architecture and it's history and it was suuuuper interesting! If you see one of these guides definitely take their explanation, as they speak english and their knowledge it's so valuable.

A nice park surrounds this historical castle grounds in downtown Kofu. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.
BearusAurelius — Google review
I wandered up to Kōfu Castle in July and was pleasantly surprised by its perfect blend of history, greenery, and summer tranquility. The stone walls and reconstructed gate are beautifully shaded by towering trees, making the walk up to the Honmaru hill refreshingly cool. At the top, the summer breeze and unmatched views of Kōfu city stretched out under a clear blue sky—no Mount Fuji this month, but still a stunning panorama that felt so peaceful. Midday sunshine made the stone pathways glow, and the open grounds were dotted with locals enjoying a shaded stop under the trees. This time of year, you’ll likely see families and couples enjoying a relaxing stroll instead of the springtime crowds. Plus, the signage around the site gives great historical insights about Takeda Shingen’s legacy—perfect for history buffs. Exploring the castle took me about 45 minutes, including a few stops to sit and soak in the summer ambiance. A quick, enriching detour if you’re in Kōfu during July—don’t forget your sunhat and water bottle! 🏯☀️

Walking towards the castle grounds, I glanced backwards and caught a glimpse of a mountain peak through the clouds in the distance. Could it really be? My pace increased as I entered the well-kept grounds and climbed the stone steps making my way to the viewing platform. The last step had arrived and the clouds began to clear. And just like that, the elusive Fujisan appeared. Whilst I’ve seen Fuji from afar, seeing it that bit closer is a bit more special. Pleasant place to visit all around, beautiful gardens and peaceful atmosphere. If only someone would knock down that inconveniently placed metal tower…

The Statue of Takeda Shingen is a significant tourist attraction in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. It was built in 1919 to honor Takeda Shingen, a renowned samurai who played a crucial role during the Clan Wars era. The shrine stands on the remains of the fortified residence of the Takeda clan, adding to its historical importance.
During my early college years, I had to do a report on Takeda Shingen. I always love reading and watching both fictional and non-fictional accounts of his battles. The statue is right in the middle of Kofu city next to the train station. Plenty of near by parking and places to eat.

The statue of Takeda Shingen right in front of Kofu Station is impressively large and has a commanding presence, even more than I expected.

Sacred & Religious Sites
Takeda Shrine is a significant place of worship located on the ruins of the Tsutsujigasaki fortified residence, once ruled by the powerful Takeda clan during Japan's Warring States period. The shrine, built in 1919 to honor Kofu's revered leader, Takeda Shingen, features original moats and stone walls from the historic stronghold. Visitors can explore the Homotsuden treasure house showcasing authentic weapons and armor from the Takeda clan.
I recently visited Takeda Shrine, and it exceeded all my expectations! If you're a Japan history buff like me, this place is a must-visit. Nestled in a serene setting, Takeda Shrine offers a fascinating journey into the rich history of the Takeda clan, particularly during the reign of Takeda Shingen. The highlight for history enthusiasts is undoubtedly the museum dedicated to the Takeda clan. It provides an in-depth look into the life and times of Takeda Shingen, showcasing artifacts, relics, and informative displays that transport you back to that era. The attention to detail is commendable, making it a truly immersive experience. The serene surroundings also make it a peaceful escape for families looking to enjoy some quality time together.

I visited by bicycle. Since there wasn't a designated bike parking area, a security guard kindly directed me to a place where I could park. The road to Takeda Shrine has a steady uphill slope. The shrine grounds are very well-maintained, making for a pleasant walk.
World H — Google review
Interesting historic site a lovely 3km walk from the Kofu JR station. Small and well-kept but nothing spectacular. There is a museum just 100m away from the shrine which can be visited for free for the regular exhibits. Do visit if you have the time but may not worth coming here especially for the shrine.

Takeda Shrine is a compelling mix of spiritual serenity, historical intrigue, and cultural heritage, offering a unique glimpse into the life of one of Japan's greatest samurai.

During my early college years, I had to do a report on Takeda Shingen. Years later on this day, I had the honor of visiting a shrine dedicated to him. The shrine has an array of Shingen theme charms and you can even purchase a small scale size of his banner. Unfortunately the Shingen museum was closed due some renovations, but artifacts site was open and there were plenty of historic displays including katanas, kabutos, scrolls, and banner used in battle.

Must visit here if you come to kofu. A city full of takeda seal (The red diagonal diamond). From the station you need to either walk 2.1km up a slop or take a bus @190yen per person just outside the station. Not to worry the bus can exchange big note to small change. When enter the bus (every half hour) take the ticket from the back gate. Before reaching the shine press the bell. The bus driver will stop and see you pay the bus fee . Very convenient.

The whole area is full of historical spots to see, and this one is a rich and well-maintained jewel. Any time of the day, it’s beautiful and lush to see. There is a noh stage in addition to the usual hostels. If you’re into samurai, it’s a must-visit.

Shosenkyo Gorge, located in Yamanashi, Japan, is a must-visit destination in autumn. This 1,250-square-kilometer area is part of the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park and offers stunning valleys, forested mountains, and charming rural towns. The gorge is famous for its breathtaking autumn foliage that explodes in vibrant shades of yellow, brown, orange, and red from early to mid-November.
We started our hike from Tenjinmori bus stop. Along the way, we were surrounded by trees that starting to turn red and yellow, with the sound of a river stream throughout the trail. Every part of the trail was scenic and it felt like you’d want to take a picture of everything. The trek itself was fairly easy since the path was paved. We took a ropeway to the summit for 1,400 yen (round trip). Unfortunately, it was cloudy that day, so we couldn’t see Mt. Fuji. However, the view from the top was still stunning. Do note that the trail at the summit is more challenging than the previous one, so make sure to wear appropriate shoes. We took a bus to go back to Tenjinmori.

Beautiful falls and rock formations, only a short hike to the shops and restaurants on top.

This is one of the most beautiful places to enjoy the autumn leaves in Yamanashi. If you visit Yamanashi for momiji season, I highly recommend stopping by this spot in Kofu.

Really beautiful place to visit if you're into hiking or sightseeing. Unfortunate that autumn was not in full yet but beautiful nonetheless.
C.H L — Google review
Lovely waterfall tucked here! We took a small bus to the top of the mountain and walked down, and i really reccommend that route as it is less tiring. But you can also decide to hike! Theres a lot of tiny waterfalls along the way and the nature surrounding this area is just gorgeous!
Ann T — Google review
Fantastic autumn foliage and nice scenic walk from "taki-ue" stop
Jenny L — Google review
Really nice hiking area with multiple lots of free parking. All of the main paths are paved so it is more like a walk rather than a hike. Their are also vending machines, restrooms and food stalls along the path. Best to arrive in the morning to beat most of the crowds. Also, there is a lot of construction on the way up and down the mountain, just be prepared.
Kristin P — Google review
I went on a rainy day in mid November, which is the perfect time to go because the autumn maple leaves look amazing! The hike could have been marked better with more English assistance, but otherwise it was pretty easy. The green line bus is reasonably priced, but comes about once an hour, so be careful about your return. I would highly recommend this hike!

Shosenkyo Ropeway offers gondola rides to the summit of a forested mountain, providing stunning views of Mount Fuji and the surrounding mountains. The five-minute journey showcases Mt. Yasaburo, Mt. Fuji, Southern Japan Alps, and the Chichibu Mountains. At the top, visitors can explore shops and restaurants along the path to Sengataki waterfall before taking a short aerial walk from the ropeway gate to Panorama-dai station for more breathtaking views.
Taking the ropeway wasn't much but it offered great views from the top. Just be prepared for lots of people unless you go early. Would have been more stunning if the autumn colors was not delayed. Nevertheless, a nice place to visit if you here
C.H L — Google review
Nice outing during autumn season. Lots of local tourists. Each ropeway carriage can take about 40 passengers. Nice view of the southern alps and Mount Fuji from afar.
Karl W — Google review
The cable car ride that goes up to the mountain. Its 1500円 for an adult and well worth the journey. The views are amazing up there and there is a lot to see. Before going up the mountain in the cable, remember to wear good hiking and trail shoes because it isn't a normal walk on a man-made surface, it literally is a serious dirt and rock trail that can be dangerous if your ignorant. Its not advanced, just be prepared is all I say, if you want the best pictures and videos of the mountians and Mt. Fuji. Highly recommended visit for sure!
Kay P — Google review
I loved the additional paths to explore after using the Gondola! The hike up to the Gondola was beautiful. I definitely recommend. Although the ticket price has gone up since when I first researched it. The round trip ticket price is now ¥1,500. Still worth it in my opinion.
Ms. N — Google review
Totally rip off. No views at top. No views along the journey. They pack the ropeway like sardines until you can’t even breathe properly. There wasn’t even alot of people they just waited for more people to arrive so they could maximize the number of people they can squeeze into 1 small train. Wouldn’t even sit this if free.
Katherine H — Google review
Ropeway up is short, just 5mins. The view is quite nice but will be best in autumn to see the colours of change. The street at the base are full of gems stone shops, if you are a collector, can choice some. A nice museum to visit there also. The Mitake Shosenkyo gorge is the key attraction, I will compare to Taiwan Takoro, if you have time, should hike along the path to the other end. Waterfall is nice. There a very interesting noodle shop just beside the big carpark, mimic the water flow noodles but in a special water feature on the table with the water constantly in move and change thru pipes below, it fresh from the river.

Just the size good for a day trip! We went to enjoy autumn leaves. The original schedule says every 20min running but it runs every 5min for high season. You will enjoy a nice view on the way and there are some easy walking place on the summit.

The gondola/mountain lift/ cable car is having limited capacity of ~30 folks and every twenty minutes - it’s a nice place to visit and glimpse view Fuji-San and do small treks on the top…. The golden koi fish pond in the starting station and the restaurant with soft serve on the top are nice

We can see fossils from the Sanchu Cretaceous. Professor Masaki Matsukawa resarched the Sanchu Cretaceous especially in Gunma and Saitama and brought great progress in Cretaceous researches. You can also experience his great Achievement - the discovery of the footprints of dinosaurs. Never forget visiting this museum when you have a chance!

A small museum with gift shop and cafe. It's a modern building that you won't miss on the road (plus the dinosaur statue helps). Everything was clean, well lit, A/C, and easy to see. There was sufficient English for me to understand what I was seeing without knowing Japanese, although most of the interpretation was Japanese. The fossils were fantastic and very well displayed. They included plants, small creature, and large dinosaurs. I liked the way that they would use obvious cribwork for the missing bones of their full dinosaur skeletons. On the second floor. we could see people working behind glass wall, they were hand carving small dinosaur models out of wood. They waved and showed us their work through the window. These were for sale at very reasonable prices at the gift shop. The gift shop had a large array of Kanna and Gumna souveniers, and strange food items. We had their curry noodles for lunch, YUM. I want the recipe! Everyone was friendly. We also drove down the crazy twisty Kanna roads to view the fossil dinosaur prints in the nearby roadcut. Gorgeous drive! Be sure to pick up their map of Kanna attractions and seek them out too.

Nestled in the picturesque Gunma Prefecture, Ueno Sky Bridge serves as a stunning connection between Mahoba Forest and Kawawa Nature Park, where you can explore the intriguing Fujido Cave. This serene hiking experience offers breathtaking mountain vistas and a glimpse into Japan's charming rural landscapes. One of the unique features of this bridge is its whimsical soap bubbles that float through the air year-round, delighting children and adding to its charm.
Just in front of the Fujida cave entrance so enjoy both the cave and the walk on the sky across this bridge. Theres a restaurant and camping area on the other side but was closed during my visit in February, maybe due to corona. Not much shops in the area so be prepared before hand. The drive will be beautiful surrounded by nature and road runs parallel to the river most of the way. Stunning area, beautiful.

Nice to see, takes just an hour or so unless you intend to have lunch or camp. There is on-site parking (free as of Oct 2023) and plenty of restrooms with a nice snack bar. The bridge has several bubble machines, so if you wear contact lens protect your eyes. Worth a side trip but not a destination. Recommend.

Awesome bridge with an outstanding view. Worst soft serve though.
Brownman L — Google review
Stunning views from this skybridge 2700 feet above sea level. The valley below is about 2000~2100 feet above sea level. If you are afraid of heights its best to walk across when there is no-one else on it as it does shake when there is a group on it or if kids are running across it. There is a coin box at the entrance and they request 100 yen per person over 6 years old for passage. The bridge is accessible from Mahobanomori campsite, but you don't have to be a guest of the site to use the bridge - its open to the public. There is a playground across the otherside.

Guests can indulge in soothing massages or relax in the inviting spa tub. The hotel's astronomical observatory is a highlight, providing opportunities to gaze at the stars on clear nights.
Booked at the last minute as a weekend escape and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Some parts of the hotel are a little old, but it’s clean and well-maintained. Some rooms have been renovated, and the main dining area and lobby are nice. All staff were friendly and polite. The hotel has an observatory and you can see stars when the weather is good. There was also a piano concert in the lobby when we stayed. There’s a pond and garden where you can take a stroll, and the hot spring and sauna are very relaxing. The hotel is located in a quiet and natural setting. It was excellent value for money. Dinner and breakfast were included in our plan. Hotel geared towards mature couples rather than families. The hotel is a great place if you need to recharge your batteries. I am keen to visit again in a different season.

It’s autumn season and I love the halloween themed park! Pumpkins are decorated, there is a spot in the center of the park where you can get a really good pumpkin photo in aerial view lookout, and it was a bit cold so we had some S'mores outside! Coffee and cocoa were also available. Great place to get photo taken and if you love to go on a nature walk.

Free entry, no need to pay Place is huge and there’s plenty of parking. The shops and cafés are pretty decent too. Inside, there’s a super famous restaurant and another one called Rock. I went during lunchtime and had to wait almost an hour! Weirdly, there were still lots of empty seats inside, but they still kept us waiting in line. I guess only they know how the system works. 😅 Anyway, I ordered their most popular dish and it was honestly so good! Big portions and seriously delicious. You order using a QR code on your phone, which is pretty convenient. Oh, and there are so many photo spots with gorgeous flowers around! Perfect for taking cute pictures and capturing the whole vibe. 🌸✨

Nestled in the heart of Yamanashi, Sun Meadows Kiyosato Ski Area is a year-round destination that promises stunning views and a variety of activities. Perched at an impressive altitude of 1,900 meters, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramas of Mt. Fuji, the Yatsugatake Mountains, and the Southern Alps. This hidden gem offers numerous seating options perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy moments.
This is a really friendly and efficient resort with well maintained slopes. Incredible views and great food right up the top. The bottom station has rental, ski school, equipment shop, food options. Short walk from the car park. It is ideal for beginners making the transition up to intermediate - this mountain allows you/your kids to do more white and sense of security. If you are already intermediate there is part of one slope that allows you to become comfortable with the idea of skiing black runs with confidence. If you are an advanced skier, the views of the mountains rising above you could be frustrating; if only I could reach up there; or there; or there! You may need to re-orient your expectations to working on improving your style or enjoying the forest on the chair or gazing at Mt Fuji. BEST FOOD AND VIEWS ARE UP THE WOODEN STAIRS TO THROW DECK UP ABOVE THE TOP LIFT. Soup is my pick; pizza was my bf’s. This is a lovely spot in the world.

This place was recommended by our hotel. We rented the whole gear and took lessons from 10-12 and 1:30-3:30. The staff was so friendly and patient. They spoke enough English. Our kids did snowboarding and we tried skiing. Limited vegetarian options for food but we had a nice fried pizza and fries with truffle and hot chocolate and chamomile tea. Getting a taxi from there to your hotel could be a challenge. Arrange a pickup beforehand or rent a car. It’s good to have a SIM card with calling options. The snow was artificial but alright for a novice. Afternoon hours are less busy as the kids ski school is done by then.

The main attractions (outside the ski season) are the kiyosato terrace at the top of the mountain and the go kart track. There is a souvenir store as well as a lounge and a restaurant. They do have tables set up outside to hang out. There's a huge free parking lot. Plenty of lockers available in the main lobby.

Great little hidden gem in the middle of yamanashi. The main reason people come here is for the breathtaking view from the top and the numerous seating options that make it more instagrammable. Pricing is not bad, I cant remember the exact price but it's pretty standard pricing for using a gondola. There are couple of food options. There's a cafeteria with two shops at the bottom. One sells sandwiches and the other sells more restaurant style food like grilled chicken and pasta. Price are a little expensive but not too bad. At the top, there are 2 cafes. I didnt check one of them put but the one I did had only drinks and sweets. View is amazing you'll never get bored of it. There a couple of seating options. There the main beds which anyone can use, there's an hourglass next to each bed once the time is up then you should honor it and let the next people jump on. Some beds have 30mins and some have an hour I think. There are also reservation beds which you do through the site I believe. And there also bench and table options as well. The place was surprisingly relatively crowded especially on a Monday and no buses that reach the place as they have been suspended due to COVID19. Which brings us to accessibility. It's almost impossible to get to without a car. Usually there's a bus that takes you there, but that are suspended so the only way to reach it is by taxi or bicycle. Problem is there aren't many taxis in the area and the bicycle rental place also have very few bicycles available if you didn't make prior reservations. We almost didn't make it back to the station on time to catch our train, we had to get staff to call a taxi and had to wait about 40mins for one to arrive. All in all, great place that I highly recommend if you have the means to get there. Also it's doable for a day trip from Tokyo, it takes roughly 3 hours by train to Kiyosato Station.

A nice ski resort where there are rich courses for every skill level. You can rent ski equipment for every age. The ski school is great, there are even English speaking teacher to teach foreigner. The staffs are helpful, although not all of them speak English, they will try their best with body language to let you understand. There choice of food is very limited but the quality is good. There are not many skiers or snowboarders, so there is no waiting for the lift. The mid-cafe is a nice get away from the waiting parents down at the main building. There are some ticket combo to save you some money. I find it amazing that there are only little asian tourists in the resort.

I think any ski resort it nice when you love to ski. I could only say that if you own some gears and suit less rent😊 no entrance fee just the ticket for the cable you desire. I went this place too early last dec. the snow is not yet thick but still i got the best experience i love it
MK M — Google review
Nice, but small place, but if you are beginner or just like a nice glide down a hill without any hard places, this one is great. Went there for only an afternoon and had a very good time.. Ski rental was 4000 yen (boots, skis), lift card was 4200 yen, so normal price..
Carsten H — Google review
It's a panoramic place especially at the top when you get off the cable car. It's the Kyosato Terrace. You get unobstructed wide views of the plateau and the mountain ranges including Mount Fuji.

Shopping Malls
Nestled in the natural beauty of Yamanashi, the Yatsugatake Resort Outlet Mall offers a unique shopping experience with a backdrop of outdoor adventures. The mall features a variety of stores, including popular brands like Avirex, which often offer generous sales. While some shops have closed down, there are still three recommended outdoor stores to explore: Hardware, Colombia, and an Italian brand. The setting amidst the forest is picturesque and provides ample parking.
Avirex is one of our favorite brand. The sales lady was very kind and it was a lucky day yesterday because of the huge sale not only on Avirex but on most of the stores. We went here during weekdays so it was a slack day and there were only few shoppers but I like it that way, we had a lot of time to choose without minding the cost and the limited items.

This place used to be really enjoyable shopping mall, but now it’s dying out. Most tenants have left and there are a lot of vacant place. It doesn’t deserve to be visited at all, now. On top of that, free parking became toll parking. It was another disappointing point.
Y Y — Google review
Compact in size and major brand shops are missing but it’s like shopping in the middle of a forest and it feels good. The whole place closes at 7pm and dinner has to be pretty early if you want to eat there. Coupon discount with highway toll is available, and will save you almost the one way toll for shopping coupon!

It is a comfortable mall in the mountains and full of nature. There are not many famous stores, but it is fun to search for outdoor and ethnic related bargains. It is a wonderful place to relax slowly with a family on a sunny day.

This is like a ghost town outlet. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because the burger restaurant which I thought was very good. Most stores here are closed. I wouldn't suggest coming here.

The outlet is in a very nice setting, among the forest of 八ヶ岳. Plenty of parking area too. However, the range of shops are slightly limited, and mostly focus on outdoor clothing.

Most of the stores have closed since I last went there. I do recommend the three outdoor stores there though. Hardware, Colombia and another Italian brand that I don't remember the name of. Food choices are avarage.

Lovely peaceful park. Statue is Kannon, Konzeon Bosatsu. Nice halo. Beautiful coloring. Avalokitesvara of Lotus Sutra, Renge Kyo, who takes form of Quan Shi Yin, who is Konzeon Bosatsu. Avalokitesvara is a central figure in Buddhism who is the compassion of all Buddhas and the Bodhisattva of compassion. A Bosatsu has abandoned the self-interest of their own rest in Nirvana / Nibbana to continue in service to all sentient beings. Buddhist teachings from Nichiren in the 1200's have emphasized Lotus Sutra and have led to proliferation of statuary showing the wide variety of forms of the Bodhisattva of Compassion.

When I first came here, I didn't know anything about it, so when I saw the Kannon statue, I thought it might be a religious park...🥲 But it's well-maintained and very clean. The parking lot is very spacious. There are toilets. The park is also large and has a variety of play equipment. There's also a rest area where you can relax. There's also the Onishiyama Landslide Rubble Preservation Garden, which has been preserved in its original state. I recommend visiting during cherry blossom season.🌸 It's off the road and there are no houses nearby, so it's a very quiet park. Outdoor Activities
Nestled in Nagano Prefecture, Fujimi Panorama Resort is a charming ski destination that caters to both beginners and intermediate skiers. The resort offers picturesque views of Mt. Fuji and features a mountain bike park, making it an ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Located just an hour and a half from Tokyo's Hachioji area, it provides easy access for visitors seeking a day of adventure.
I come for the MTB trails. One of the biggest if not the biggest MTB park in Japan. Trails ranging from true beginner up to national champ level. Mid mountain and lower trails are great for getting the hang of park riding with full beginner trails in the Skills Park up to the Blue Hornet jump line or Trail 10 with its melon sized rocks for the more skilled rider. Access is by chairlift. The crew will load your bike but you have to unload it at the top. Take the gondola (self loading but the staff might help if you struggle) to the top for more challenging trails. I’m getting back into the sport and have only ridden C from the top but despite the green label, it requires good break control and stamina. Maybe I’ll try B next season.

A good ski resort. We went here at 28th December. Unfortunately the beginner slope was closed. the view is very good. But because it's not very cold here, they are using snowmaker so it's not very good for the environment.

it’s a little bit expensive compared to other ski/snowboarding places but the course is really good! if your gonna rent everything it will cost no more than 20,000¥

Great spot for mountain biking in summer! The gondola takes about 10 minutes to get to the top and you put your mountain bikes inside with you. We averaged about 30-35 minutes on the green mountain bike trail from top to bottom. There's mountain bike hire at the base station too! Food options at the top are limited to a few items, so better to eat at the bottom or byo.

Bike park review. It was fairly quiet on a Friday without any queues. There aren't too many trails to ride but the trails are good. As an intermediate rider, I just rode the same line four times. The trails are well maintained with a good blend of technical and flow. Lots a fun jumps, no gap jumps. A full rental downhill bike packages is 19000yen, similar to what I would pay in Canada.

A popular ski and snowboarding resort set in the mountains of Nagano. Rentals for equipment is available and there are slopes for different proficiency levels. There are also classes available. A large restaurant for food and drinks. A gift shop as well. The weather was cold and snowy but it was an amazing experience.

Well maintained mountain biking trails. Went on a Saturday not too crowded no long queue. Shimano biker festival is there with great vibes. Foreigner friendly. Bike rental shop has good well maintained bikes. Difficult to access without car. Driving back to Tokyo via Chuo toll highway is heavy traffic on weekend.

Their MTB Trails are professionally done!!! They have different trail levels: Beginner, Easy, Intermediate, Hard. We had so much fun and we will definitely go back here. The maps they are handing everywhere was very helpful for us to navigate.

Komoro-jō Castle Ruins - Kaikoen Park is a historic site in Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture, featuring the remains of an Edo-era castle. Despite the absence of the original structure, visitors can learn about its strategic construction and history. Situated at the lowest point in the city, it's known as Japan's only 'castle in a hole.' The park also houses various attractions such as a zoo, amusement park, museum, and children's play area.

Nice park to visit while in Komoro. The zoo is getting a renovation and the new penguin enclosure looks pretty nice and decent. The entrance fee to the park is affordable at 500 yen for a combined ticket to visit some of the museums which houses art and various artifacts from Komoro's history. Worth a visit for those who want a quiet place without much tourist and an insight into some of the town's history and sights.

Lovely place, famous for its cherry blossoms. We visited during the summer, and there were only a few people around. But the entrance fee includes (and obviously goes to support) a tiny zoo which is part of the park. I hate these tiny zoos. The cages are old, WAY too small, and dirty. Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Suwa Taisha Kamisha Honmiya is a collection of wooden Shinto shrines and worship halls located in a serene forest at the foothills of the mountains in the Suwa Area of Nagano Prefecture. It is renowned for its historical significance, being related to Takashima Castle and originating from a god mentioned in the oldest remaining history book, Kojiki.
Visited this famous shrine in Nagano every new year these years. Love the atmosphere and you can eat and shop along the way to the shrine. Parking area is too busy during new year holiday but lucky enough to fine some vacancy a bit far from the spot.
Cecilia C — Google review
We enjoyed this shrine very much, tranquilly located on the edge of a forest and seemingly in harmony with the grand, towering trees that surround it. It is hard to appreciate Shinto shrines if you are not Japanese, or don't have a cultural and aesthetic understanding of their meaning, architecture and significance. But this one is just naturally attractive even if, like us, you have little understanding of what you are looking at. So much beautiful wood in the construction, and a pleasing absence of the signage that seems ubiquitous at many such places and that so badly mars the aesthetics. Easy to get to by car, with free parking available nearby. Not sure how to go about getting here by public transport.
Howard B — Google review
It was a very nice shrine with very good vibes.
Jumi — Google review
This was a huge complex. I liked how everyone was dressed in traditional clothes and taking care of the site. It was cool to see a blessing being performed for safe travels for a truck driver and his companion. I was able to get the shrine stamps here. Everything was so well kept. I liked the sumo shrines that where as well which was cool. After visiting here I ate some nice jelly like noodles at a nearby shop which was perfect for the very hot day.
Scott C — Google review
This is the biggest of the four Suwa Taisha shrines. Lmts of interesting buildings and stuff. I enjoyed much here. The main god is famous for Sumo wrestling.
星野浩 — Google review
I visited in late January. One one hand it appears run-down—some structures were off-limits due to renovation, but on the other, it just feels really ancient. I did a little bit of research on this place prior to visiting (as we should, to appreciate the place more), and I knew this shrine is very culturally significant and one of the main ones in the country. It’s considered a power spot by many, but the only power I felt was the cold fingers of winter tucking themselves down behind my neck. It was cold. This shrine is one of the Suwa shrines that house the sacred logs that some brave, brave people ride down a mountainside during a festival that’s held every 6 years or so. I forget the name. I’m writing this on my phone half-dizzy after a strenuous hike.

This area has many beautiful shrines. The Shrines are all next to the mountains, so you feel connected to nature. It is a really peaceful here.

Suwa Grand Shrine (Japanese: 諏訪大社 Hepburn: Suwa taisha), historically also known as Suwa Shrine (諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja) or Suwa Daimyōjin (諏訪大明神), is a Shinto shrine in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is considered to be one of the oldest shrines in existence, being implied by the Nihon Shoki to already stand in the late 7th century. It certainly carries a pride of place and there are thousand year old trees around the shrine. Set in a peaceful tranquil forest. A Shinto ceremony was held as we passed by for a large Japanese company and its staff.

Ueda Castle Ninomaru Ruins

Mentioned on
20 lists
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Ueda Castle Ninomaru Ruins, located in the eastern part of Nagano Prefecture, is a reconstructed hilltop castle dating back to 1583. Originally built by Masayuki Sanada, a prominent military commander during the Sengoku Era, this historic site fended off attacks by the Tokugawa army twice. The castle had seven watchtowers, and three of them still stand today as Nagano Prefectural Treasures.
Had a lot of fun here during the spring festival! There were so many people, but the atmosphere was wonderful. There were a lot of cherry blossom trees and other flowers too. There was a street performer doing magic tricks. There were food trucks, and plenty of parking. I want to come every spring. It is free to enter but you need to pay for parking. Tip: Bring your own water because the water is ¥400 here. The fries I bought from a stall were soggy too but still edible. The parking is also a bit more expensive during peak season.

Ueda Castle, located in Nagano Prefecture, is a historic site known for its impressive stone walls and reconstructed turrets. Though much of the original structure was lost, the remaining gates and fortifications offer a glimpse into its past. The castle is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season, attracting visitors with its scenic views and tranquil atmosphere. While not as grand as some other Japanese castles, its history and picturesque setting make it a charming place to visit.
WS — Google review
Although a lot smaller than expected, I highly enjoyed the castle, and definitely recommend it. The more recent history of the castle, it being bought by someone who didn't want it being split between multiple owners and too many changes made to it and instead making it into a public park, was cool to learn, and the shrine there is lovely too. Unfortunately there is currently ongoing construction work, but it's still a good place to visit. The shrine has goshuin with awesome designs, and they give out free sweeties with them! There are good photo spots too, and sometimes there are performers by the main gate. There are also museums, and you can look around the turrets, but that has an admission fee.
Hercules W — Google review
One of my favorite clans! I had to check out Ueda Castle. The parking is pretty far and at this time, there weren't many people. The shrine is on the grounds and if you want to get the gojoin and stamp, they are across the street at the Info office.
Roger A — Google review
Really lovely castle with a very rich history of one of the coolest samurai clan in all of Japan, the Sanada clan, famous for their samurai uniform with antlers and red color (you've probably seen in movies). Ueda castle also had legendary defense battles against many sieges, the subject of a popular Japanese tv show "sanadamaru". The castle is also featured in other works such as "Summer Wars". While the castle gates aren't as big as Matsumoto castle, I think they are definitely worth visiting if you are in the area..they have amazing armor on display and a rich cultural center and museum nearby.
Baruch T — Google review
The place overall is nice, even though rather small. We did not check out the castle but the park around it was full of flowers and there was a nice traditional event taking place
José A — Google review
Well the old castle is basically destroyed, but the river around the castle, the Earth and the historic atomosphere is still there, telling people the stories in old days

Kitamuki Kannon temple

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Kitamuki Kannon Temple is a reconstructed 9th-century Buddhist temple and pilgrimage site located in Bessho Onsen. It is dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, and features forested grounds with a sacred tree. Unlike most temples that face south, Kitamuki Kannon faces north towards Zenko-ji Temple in Nagano City. The temple is known as a "power spot" for love and relationship luck.
A beautiful local spot of a 9th century Buddhist temple. Its name is literally translated as “Kannon Buddha facing the north”. Upon entering via the gate from the main road, you will walk through a short street lined up with stores and soba restaurants before climbing up a bit to the temple. The grounds are not big but the main hall is quite stunning. My visit time was 40 minutes. This spot seems quite popular among domestic Japanese visitors, and I saw some come in tours.
Ha L — Google review
I've visited many temples all over Japan, but this one holds a special place in my heart, and this was my second time visiting to pay my respects. While my first visit was wonderful, this time I was able to learn about its history more deeply. I came to understand the importance of "ryōmairi"-the practice of visiting both Kitamuki Kannon for blessings in this life and Zenko-ji Temple for peace in the next. This new understanding made the visit so much more profound. I'm now looking forward to visiting Zenko-ji to complete the pilgrimage. The air on the temple grounds was so refreshing in the summer, and the lush greenery created an atmosphere truly befitting its nickname, the "Kamakura of Shinshu." We were also permitted to enter the main hall, and I was genuinely moved by its solemn beauty. This is a truly wonderful temple, one that makes me feel from the bottom of my heart that I must visit again whenever I am in Bessho Onsen.
Matthew C — Google review
No tickets were required to enter. Free temple to look around at. I enjoyed scoping out the place.
Ms. N — Google review
This is one of the must-visit sights in Bessho Onsen. The temple has a deep and interesting history, modest but well-maintained buildings, ancient trees, and a great view. There's no entrance fee but also no English information. It's not touristy but often full of tourists, so I personally find some other places in the surrounding countryside more impressive.
Aaron M — Google review
Serene, pristine, away from hustle bustle of Ueda city. Lush green environment with small ponds having colourful fishes. Good experience away from the city. There are lot of onsens (hot water springs) nearby in walkable distance.

Anrakuji Temple

Anrakuji Temple, the oldest Zen temple in Nagano, is a serene and historic site nestled in lush woodlands. The main attraction is its remarkable three-story octagonal wooden pagoda, a rare gem and the only one of its kind remaining in Japan. The temple exudes tranquility and offers a peaceful nature vibe as visitors stroll through the black gate surrounded by greenery. The intricate carvings on the tower are truly mesmerizing and blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings.
A nominal fee to visit a significant heritage property! It was just interesting that while nestled on a hill behind the gated entry of the temple, it is beside lots of grave stones too. An experience to visit and glad we drove specially to visit this amazing and highly intricatw piece of ancient pagoda architecture that is standing the test of time!
Rtexal T — Google review
The one and only Octagonal shape pagoda can be found here, and it's the Anrakuji treasure . You will need to walk up some flight of stairs to the temple and to the pagoda, but it is worth the entrance fees of 300 yen per adult ( to see the pagoda) . Parking is free . Please park here so that you can visit the other two temples nearby .
Choo H — Google review
Loved this temple from the entrance, featuring the black gate and plenty of greenery alongside the road leading to the temple. It was breezy and cool in the shade, which made the stroll very pleasant. National treasure with the highlight as a three-story octagonal wooden tower. Intricate and original carvings of the tower were amazing to look at. The tower blended very well with the lush green and the blue skies of early summer typical of Nagano. I suppose this place must also look splendid in the fall with yellow and red leaves as the backdrop. My visit time was about 45 mins. Free to enter temple grounds, 300 yen to climb up to the wooden tower.
Ha L — Google review
The beautiful octagonal pagoda is worth a visit alone. It’s incredibly complex and an original, too. It’s free to visit the temple and bell tower, 300 yen to walk up through the woods to the pagoda. Quite a few stairs. The staff are super friendly, too!
Kate M — Google review
There is an entrance fee but worth paying to see the rare example of Song Chinese-style Zen architecture of the eight-sided pagoda nestled in the forest. There are many stairs to it, though, which also somewhat cuts down on crowds even though this is another of the must-see places in Bessho Onsen.
Aaron M — Google review
Small entrance fee to see national treasure. Lots of stair to climb. Peaceful nature vibe.
Yang — Google review
Spend the few hundred yen to visit the national treasures. Went by rental car. Beautiful traditional Japanese buildings and shrines. Nice tea houses and restaurants so can spend a day here and can get lost so take your time. Lots of hills and stairs. Worth the visit.
