Kartchner Caverns State Park is a remarkable limestone cave system that offers guided tours to explore its living rock formations. Discovered in 1974, it remained a secret for 25 years before opening to the public. The caverns feature spires, shields, columns, and other unique formations that have been developing for over five million years. It's home to the world's longest stalactite formation and the tallest natural column in Arizona.
Majestic & otherworldly! We were extra fortunate to get spots on the monthly photography tour. Even the visitors center is beautifully designed, starting with the fascinating discovery and development story in a lovely amphitheater. Each staff member was genuinely proud of their part in the visitor experience - warm, friendly and knowledgeable. Can’t wait to return and share this special place with our visiting family and friends!

Site 44 (ours) was very unlevel/ 6” leveling ramps still was not enough! Website should apply this info on each space; take the time to do so! We left early because of this and no refunds! Website gives no idea if level or need super high lifters; awful! I have vertigo so it was not fun. Unless you personally go to rv park and chk each one, you may get one like ours that is more than 6” off! Be prepared. Campsite is clean, shower water is hot but hubby says in mens bathroom toilet paper rolls are in a “ weird place so legs are catiwompass while sitting”…. Odd they would do that. $50 a night tho makes it hard to wanna go back. Nice views of mountains and they have a loop for hiking so that is nice. The unleveled lots make this hard to come back to not knowing if you choose online a decent spot… in pics they all look level. Beware! No one expects more than 6 inches!!!!! Also do not drink the water or use for cooking. Had brown , gray water with sediment come out. Use bottled water for cooking or drinking or coffee!

One of, if not the best State Park in the system. The cave tours are excellent. The campground is top notch with well spaced sights. The surrounding area is rich in historical sites, and the Sonoita opportunities for food (The Copper Brothelbrew pub), wine, and distilleries is a great adult day trip. And, the incredible Empire Ranch is also near Sonoita. Wildlife opportunities are abundant both summer and winter. We really enjoy White Water Draw in the winter to see 10's of thousands of Sandhill Cranes. So, its just not the cave and campgrounds - there is a vast area to explore.
Mark L — Google review
Great experience on our cave tour today! Our guide Rich was knowledgeable and funny! It was great to learn about the history and geology of the cave system. We’re planning a trip back when we can visit the Great Room (closed this time of year for the bats). Also enjoyed a short walk on one of the trails. Beautiful area!
Marion B — Google review
This is a nice park, plenty of hiking trails, not far from tombstone and Sierra vista. Cave is cool but not much else to do except hang out . Spots are big and lots of privacy so you can let it all hang out if you like, after dark gets interesting careful where you look you might get an eye full, just because Rv windows are tinted real dark doesn’t mean you can’t see through them at night especially if your inside lights are on. So bring your cards or Yahtzee or board games. Leave your inhibitions at home. No judgement here.
Rick — Google review
Great tour, good location. Cafe not so good. The tour was excellent and very informative. No photos allowed unfortunately. Some outside shots.
Ron A — Google review
One of the best state parks to enjoy a few days camping, have stayed in #16, #1 and last weekend #4. Always a five star experience and with hosts like Paul and Melinda all was perfect, but here is my very unfortunate con. Having enjoyed the cave tours, either one is great, this time our 230pm tour included a very unruly child that was much to young and much to spoiled. Could barely hear the information given by Brody our guide and constantly ran back and forth on the stops we were supposed to be enjoying. I do believe this child has never heard the word no. No negative reflections towards staff at all and we will continue to return to this campground and complete more tours
Wes A — Google review
The caverns are stunning and a must see! Amazing creation by God! I'm from OR and have been through the Oregon caves many times and the explored the lava beds in CA, so I'm used to the caves being very cold, so I came all bundled up and with my heavy coat and the ranger told us when we bought our tickets that it would be hot and humid inside! I was shocked 😳. After we were done with the cavern tour, we went on one of the trail loop hikes. It made it a great day!

The Bureau of Land Management San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area Administrative Office spans over 57,000 acres and is home to a diverse range of wildlife and historical sites. The area offers opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and wildlife observation along the picturesque San Pedro River. Visitors can explore the trails at their own pace or join guided river walks led by knowledgeable staff. With its lush riparian habitat contrasting the surrounding desert landscape, this conservation area provides a unique ecosystem for nature enthusiasts to discover.
This is an exceptionally beautiful place. There are many birds and there is a gift shop and there are picnic areas and historical sites really a wonderful place to go. But the best thing about / the San Pedro house / that is what we call it here in Cochise County the San Pedro house. The best thing is the hiking here is incredible. It is best to come here in the winter and the spring however I went for a hike in the summer here and if it's not too hot I can be very pleasant. Wonderful place to take photographs wonderful Natural riparian Area. This is a natural River and if you are from a different part of the country it is just a trickle of a stream. But here in Arizona we call this a river. Just a really beautiful place and it is kind of not like Arizona it looks like a little string back east or up North with cottonwood trees and lots of hiking trails just awesome

Good people doing great conservation land stewardship work. Highly professional dedicated staff doing the best they can with what they've got to work with, while protecting huge swaths of public land. Protecting public lands and it's abundant natural resources. Dispelling the myth that BLM stands for The Bureau of Logging and Mining.
MK — Google review
The reason I only gave it one star was because it was shut down due to the government shutdown. I thought other people should know not to even bother going by until the shutdowns over.
Kristofer K — Google review
Beautiful area, just a little more annual upkeep is required in carr canyon, ideally the picnic area. The potential for this place is huge. I dont know if the resources are lacking but if they got the canyon cleaned the potential of fires would go down substantially. In recent years they have been clearing large debris and graveling the road which is nice to see. Keep up the great work guys.

The shopping is sparse and there are no restaurants. I was hoping for a water slide, or perhaps some kind of massage therapy place. The kids were bored. Would not recommend unless you like looking at things and walking.

Boothill Graveyard, located in Tombstone, Arizona, is a must-visit attraction for those interested in the town's history. Situated on the outskirts of town and home to around 276 graves, it serves as the final resting place for individuals involved in shootouts, lynchings, and hangings. Notable figures such as Billy Clanton and the McLaurys from the infamous OK Corral fight are buried here.
Very cool to experience and history in person! This place offers a in-depth descriptions of the these people lived hundreds of years ago. Many of them tell of how they died. Most ended in tragedy with either being hung, shot, stabbed, and even poisoned! Take your time reading and learning of these individuals who made history. February 2025, $6 for adults. 12 and under free. Gift shop offers many unique items with fair prices. Staff were very friendly and helpful in answering any questions.
Alex — Google review
We found our visit to Boothill Graveyard to be very interesting. Fortunately the graves were covered with rocks to prevent animals from digging. This also made locating them easy. Many of the tombstones have been restored and a few have pretty humorous messages.
Louis E — Google review
Boothill Graveyard – Tombstone, AZ Just outside of Tombstone, Boothill Graveyard brings you face-to-face with the real people who shaped the Wild West. Standing only feet from their resting places makes the history feel tangible, yet it’s less macabre than you might expect—especially if you’ve studied the history or enjoyed the classic Western films. I recommend saving this stop for the end of your Tombstone visit. It provides a sense of closure, showing not only how the legends lived but also how their stories ended. As a bonus, the grounds are dotted with beautiful examples of Sonoran Desert cacti, making it a rewarding visit for history lovers and plant enthusiasts alike.
Bryan R — Google review
This was my husband's and my favorite stop in Tombstone. We were greeted by a friendly man who was running the gift shop. He kindly showed us a map of the town and alerted us to areas not to be missed. The woman selling the tickets into the cemetary was very informative. She spoke animatedly about those who are laid to rest there. We enjoyed our walk through the graveyard. I was particularly moved by the Jewish memorial. This graveyard illuminates the lives of people who were brave or crazy enough to settle the west.
Kathryn B — Google review
A Fascinating Step Back in Time We visited Tombstone and had such a great time learning about the history of the town. After hearing the stories and seeing the sights, we were inspired to visit the Boothill Graveyard to see where many of the town’s famous figures are buried. It really brings the Old West to life. It was a unique and memorable visit—definitely worth it if you’re into history or just want to experience something different and authentic. Tombstone has a charm all its own!
Mint M — Google review
$6 to enter and dogs are allowed. They give you a pamphlet to tour the graves that tells you what happened to most and there were so many violent deaths. Very peaceful resting place. There is a gift shop with clean restrooms.
Tony J — Google review
The cemetery itself is 100% a place to stop and see. The pamphlet with information on those laid to rest here is very interesting and really shows how brutal life in the 1880s could be. However before coming, probably call and check their hours are correct. We were all but locked into the graveyard at what we thought was an hour early of closing (it was 5pm). When we rushed back to the building upon realizing it the lady closing the store was a bit harsh. The store was shut down lights off doors locked. She said they were at their winter hours. Which were not posted anywhere, and no one said anything to us when we got our tickets to enter. The lady’s response was to “go online to wherever it’s wrong tell them” so I guess here I am posting to beware of hours and let you know they will lock you in. Posting a photo with the hours for today, still showing they are open til 6, they are not! Worth the stop but super bummed we didn’t get our souvenir as we collect one everywhere we go.
Zoe L — Google review
As a longtime fan of Western films and history, visiting Boothill Graveyard was such a unique and interesting experience. Walking among the old tombstones, reading the epitaphs, and soaking in the rich history of Tombstone felt like stepping back in time. It’s a must-visit for anyone who loves the Old West and wants to see a piece of real frontier history!

O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona is a legendary historic site known for its daily reenactments of the famous gunfight involving Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. The town has preserved its National Historic District designation with the help of the National Park Service, offering visitors a glimpse into the Old West. Tourists can explore snack shops, restaurants, small hotels, B&Bs, and enjoy horseback, stagecoach and wagon tours.
Beautiful town with wonderful people. Full of history and unique shops. Also, who doesn't want to see an old West gunfight? I wish I had had more time to explore. I will definitely be back!
Ashley S — Google review
We had a really good time at the OK Corral. The gunfight reenactment was so much better than I had expected. The museum collection was impressive. I wish we had spent a little more time there. So much to see.
Joey Z — Google review
So much fun! The gun fight was Awesome. Perfect for a family day. There are three shows a day retelling the gun fight at O.K. Corral. There is also a mini museum of the history of Tombstone's hayday 😉
Jessica W — Google review
The show was worth the price of entry ($10 pp over 5). Very comical but the history lesson behind it was very interesting as well. My children 10, 8, & 5 all stayed entertained the whole 30 min. Gun shots are loud in the "arena"
John L — Google review
We had such a great time at the show. It was funny, the acting was amazing, and it kept us entertained from beginning to end. After the show we went on a tour and learned so much about the history of Tombstone. The guide made everything easy to understand and very interesting. It is a fun and educational experience for all ages. We truly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tombstone.
Jessica T — Google review
Very entertaining with comic relief. Guns shoot blanks and can be scary to small children (like 2 and under for sure). Lots of fun places before you enter for kids to climb and play. Lots of photo opportunities.
Laura P — Google review
Very fun place, with a great history lesson, and the gunfight reenactment was entertaining to watch. The walk through museum outside was informative and interesting. Definitely worth the price of the ticket!

There us more history than just the gun fight at the OK coral on Oct 26, 1881. It's all great and you feel like you can almost touch it.

The Bird Cage Theatre

Sights & Landmarks
The Bird Cage Theatre, a renowned landmark in Tombstone, is steeped in history and legend. Dating back to 1881, it was a bustling hub of activity, operating around the clock with various amenities such as a cantina, bar, theater, and massage parlor. Notorious for its association with gambling and brothels, the venue attracted both famous and infamous figures of the time.
A very unique museum with an easy self-guided tour experience. I'm glad this place is here and I'm happy that I went though it. Is it worth $16.50 per person? I'd give it a "soft yes." The museum's artifacts are not perfectly curated and it was a bit dusty, but it's a good place to spend 30 minutes while in Tombstone if you're interested in the history.
David M — Google review
This theatre offers a truly unique and thrilling ghost-hunting experience, and I absolutely loved it! The biggest highlight by far was the woman who led the tour she was incredible. Her energy, storytelling, and deep knowledge of the local history made the entire experience feel authentic and captivating. She brought just the right mix of spookiness, humor, and historical insight, keeping everyone engaged the whole time. The atmosphere of the theatre added to the eerie charm, and the ghost-hunting equipment made it feel interactive and fun. Even if you're a skeptic, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement. Overall, it was a memorable and entertaining night, and I’d highly recommend it especially thanks to the amazing guide who truly made the experience come alive.
Nicholie G — Google review
The Birdcage Theatre – Tombstone, Arizona If Tombstone is the heart of the Wild West, then the Birdcage Theatre is its cathedral. Think of it as the Lambeau Field of football or the Carnegie Hall of music—the place where history, legend, and atmosphere all come together. Many museums claim “nothing has been touched” over the years, but few deliver. The Birdcage does—and in spades. Walking inside feels like stepping directly into the 1880s. Hundreds of authentic items remain in place from nearly 150 years ago. The rooms, the furniture, even the air carries the weight of the stories that shaped the American West. It’s not just a museum—it’s living history. On a personal note, I experienced something here I’ve never felt elsewhere. While exploring the basement on a daytime self-guided tour, I had a haunting encounter I can’t easily explain. I’m not someone who buys into things quickly, but this one gave me chills. If you’re interested in the paranormal, this place more than delivers. Overall, this is the experience of Tombstone. Worth every bit of the entrance fee, even in the 2020s. Take your time, let the history sink in, and if you only see one thing in Tombstone, make it the Birdcage. I’ll be returning—again and again.
Bryan R — Google review
My husband and I are avid travelers and obsessed with paranormal investigations. This did not disappoint! I know I sound crazy to some but for those that have experienced it themselves completely understand me- I walked to one side (away from the group) and immediately felt like a 50 lb weight was on my stomach. I walked towards my husband and told him what just happened, immediately took a picture of the area where I felt the unusual feeling. I captured a ghost on camera! I captured several orbs, one entire human figure and one mist over the Black Moriah. Well worth every penny and every minute spent- it was the highlight of my trip!
Katie S — Google review
This is the original building of The Bird Cage Theatre. It was built in 1881 and is now a museum, but retains a lot of the original theater details. We found the exhibits fascinating and really enjoyed the museum. There is also a nice gift shop loaded with Tombstone souvenirs.
Louis E — Google review
Historic, Haunting, and Totally Worth the Visit. During our trip to Tombstone, we stopped by the Bird Cage Theatre—and it did not disappoint! Hearing the history of the building, seeing the original bar still marked with bullet holes, and viewing the old paintings and artifacts really brought the Wild West to life. The stories behind the place are fascinating, and it’s incredible how much has been preserved. If you’re in Tombstone, this is definitely a must-see spot for a deeper, more vivid look at its past.
Mint M — Google review
I spent a solid three hours here taking in every detail—and if they weren’t closing for the day, I would’ve stayed longer. If you’re in Tombstone and skip the Bird Cage Theatre, you’re missing out. Period. Ignore the cheapskates whining about the $18 admission—it’s worth every cent if you have even a remote appreciation for history. This place is a time capsule, and absolutely essential if you want to understand the real Tombstone.

Was a really neat place to visit n experience. Lots of history to be learned here...

East Allen Street runs dead through the center of historic Tombstone Arizona. Walking down this street really feels like being transported to the old Wild West days of Wyatt Earp and his brothers. Many of the structures are original. What’s really great is that this is a living neighborhood preserved in time.
Louis E — Google review
We visited here during the week so a lot of the shops were closed which was disappointing. But what was open was the okay corral and that was fantastic. We also did the horse and carriage ride which was relaxing, fun The driver was our tour guide and was very informative as we rode down some of the downtown streets.
ShonnaLee R — Google review
It's a very fun place.
Dr. P — Google review
There's no parking on the street itself as its roped off. However, this street is one of the highlights in Historic Tombstone and it's where most of the hubbub and fun is. Each side of the street is jam-packed with stores, mini museums, and yummy restaurants, etc. There's a lot to see and walk through, and the sidewalk is accessible. For parking, you can park on the nearby streets, or park at the lot that a little ways behind the courthouse. Note though, it's very crowded here even on an early afternoon on the weekend. It's nice for people watching though and you can see some of the horse-drawn carriages here and some Western-dressed people.

The Bisbee Mining & Historical Museum is a must-visit attraction offering underground mine tours, history exhibits, and a crystal cave. Located in the former headquarters of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company, this museum provides an interactive journey into the role of western copper mining towns in America's industrialization. Visitors can explore impressive minerals, artifacts, photographs, and tools from Bisbee's mining era.
Wonderful place. Don't miss it! Main floor has history of the town with great displays and info. Upstairs is all about the mining in town. Very interesting and you could get a sense of how life was for miners. This town was THE SPOT in the 1800s. One of the best museums I've been to!
Barbara H — Google review
This is such a fascinating place. If you are visiting Bisbee for the first time I highly recommend this museum. As I post this it's only $10 and well worth it. It's a Smithsonian affiliate if that tells you anything about how great it is. They have a room that is still original and a gift shop that is tax free!
Bee K — Google review
Excellent mining and history of Bisbee museum. If you are in town exploring, make sure to stop by and see the history of this place. Pretty crazy the amount of copper that came from their and how it formed the town of Bisbee. The exhibits are very nice and interesting. You can really get a feel of what it was back in the day, minus the hard work and suffering a lot of these early settlers of this area faced. There's even a whole section that I believe the smithsonian helped with (could be wrong) that includes a ton of different minerals / rocks from the area that are absolutely beautiful. Cool town, awesome museum!
Tre H — Google review
The Bisbee Queen Mine Tour was amazing. My partner and I visited during our weekend getaway trip. I'd never been in a mine before and it was something to experience. Parking wasn't difficult as they had their own lot. I would imagine during high visitor times you wouldn't be able to find a space.b Before we went into the doors, we saw many things to do outside and learned a lot of history about the mine. Entering the doors it's a museum and store to purchase items from. We did buy our tickets inside and was lucky enough they had a few seats left. We got hard hats and vests lights and boarded the mine train. It was an experience the entire family would enjoy. To see the entire experience visit my YouTube Channel called Eat and Travel with Toni.

This place is amazing. Really well done and I especially like the minerals. The docents are super friendly and informative. We learned all about the mining heritage of Bisbee. They also have a wonderful gift shop.

Explore the fascinating history of mining at the Queen Mine Tour in Bisbee, Arizona. Dating back to the late 1870s, this century-old underground complex offers hard-hat tours that take visitors on a journey through time. Led by knowledgeable tour guides, including retired Phelps Dodge employees, visitors descend 1,500 feet into the mine to learn about mining techniques, dangers, and dramatic stories from the past.
Tickets were sold out, very glad we purchased them ahead of time. The kids absolutely loved it. We’ll definitely go again. The gift shop was really nice and there was also the cool rocks that we got.

This mine tour was so much fun! They give you a hard hat, vest, and a light. The train ride is really cool too! Our guide definitely knew what he was talking about and answered our groups questions. The cave we toured through is wide open. As someone with claustrophobia, I felt safe and comfortable. I would definitely recommend!

What a unique experience! The Queen Mine Tour was the highlight of our trip to Bisbee. Our guide, Neil shared real-life stories from his time working in the mine, and you could feel his passion for the history and the company (Phelps Dodge Corporation). The tour was well organized, informative, and fun. A must-do if you’re visiting Bisbee!
Niranda W — Google review
The queen Mine Tour was really enjoyable! It was pretty accessible to most parties, and the employees were very accommodating if anyone had any difficulties with the space of the mines. The tour itself was very informative if you're interested in the mining process and the history of the town. The visitor center has lots of gift/ souvenir options. It is within walking distance of the town. I drove an electric vehicle and was able to charge it at one of the Chargepoints in town while I enjoyed sightseeing and this tour.

Absolute must do in Bisbee!!! When you arrive you’ll get outfitted with a hard hat, light, and safety vest. Then you’ll board the cart deal that takes you into the mine. You straddle the seat like a motorcycle. Joey, our tour guide was fantastic. He was funny, knowledgeable, and made the tour fun and semi interactive, while making sure everyone felt safe. We had a smaller group so it was like a private tour. We went 1500 feet underground and learned the entire history of the mine. We even got to see the illusive light show (not typically offered). Awesome experience for all ages.
Emm B — Google review
Loved the tour and the gift shop! All staff that we encountered were friendly. The tour was so informative! The mine is in great shape. Will live to take others through in the future.

We had an amazing time on the mine tour. Our tour guide was excellent—funny, friendly, and very knowledgeable. It’s an experience where you not only learn about the history of the mines but also feel truly connected to the past. We enjoyed every moment and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes so you can enjoy the tour even more. A wonderful experience!

The Silver City Museum is housed in a charming circa-1881 Italianate home and former fire station, offering a glimpse into the town's rich history. Located in the historic Gospel Hill area, it features exhibits and artifacts that showcase the town's evolution over time. Visitors can explore historical properties dating back to the 1880s nearby. The museum also offers interactive activities for children, including a scavenger hunt and opportunities to try on Flamenco costumes for some lighthearted fun.
A must see to gain a better appreciation of the area. There's so many items packed into a beautifully restored firehouse. The gift shop always has a terrific selection of jewelry, clothing, books & other New Mexico souvenirs. Friendly docents completed a pleasant visit - Olé!

Great small museum that has interesting photos and items from the history of the area, with lots of interesting info. It's not a huge museum so it's a nice stop while walking around town without tiring you out. There is a scavenger hunt activity for kids. A cute gift shop. Be sure to go to the top floor if you can, the view is great. There's also a nice little area to sit and enjoy the weather, and even more pictures with captions, and a great mural, on the left side of the building. Definitely worth the visit!

Lovely little museum in the historic area of Silver Springs. Lots of information about ecology, history, politics, and everything else having to do with the settlement and history of the town. The people who work there were absolutely lovely. I got a lot of questions answered. The gift shop is also very nice. To the right of the entrance slightly behind the house there’s a lovely little garden where you can sit and enjoy the day.

Beautiful restored historic home built in 1800s. Interesting displays and cute gift shop. Stairs to 2nd and 3rd stories are steep. Garden is terrific.

The ladies here are sweethearts!! They will chat with you about the town & are happy to make suggestions about where else to visit. The gift shop is well stocked with lots of local treasures. The museum itself is small but still really interesting & the house itself is charming. No bells n whistles just an authentic look into this towns past. Beautiful exterior mosaic mural was still under construction but WOW!! The ladies said the local magnet school kids were helping with it! What a wonderful lil museum ♥️

Absolutely loved this museum! Small but so much rich history within. Children loved the activity that was set up for them and we all learned a lot about Silver City. City of Rocks State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Serene, vista-filled state park featuring unusual volcanic rock formations plus camping & hiking.
I had no idea this place existed. Huge rocks in all shapes and sizes. It reminded me of Stonehenge and where the Flintstones might live. Rocks teetering on top of each other, rocks that looked like different things, rocks with holes in them, rocks split. I think it would be awesome to camp by the rocks and couldn’t figure out why most campers were huddled together close to the ranger station. At first I thought they were afraid the rocks might shift and roll on their campers. Then I realized they had electric, running water and sewage where they were. Those things aren’t available at the rock campsites. Yeah, that’s where I would be, too. I don’t recall the fee for camping but it wasn’t much. Day pass for vehicles was $10 non residence, $5 for New Mexicans. Enter fee is on a “trust but verify” basis. You put your money in the honor box but first you must fill out a paper, keeping a copy for your windshield, the rest goes in the box. There’s a little more to it than that but that’s the long and short of it. Rangers may stop you for a spot check of your integrity. We drove around the park taking pictures then we reversed course and went around again. This place was super cool, especially if you like rocks as much as we do. I would highly suggest spending some time here if you’re in the area or passing through. A real hidden gem.

We had so much fun at City of Rocks. My kids loved climbing on and exploring in the rocks. It is a natural playground and maze all in one. We could have spent all day just exploring in the rocks but we also enjoyed the hieroglyph scavenger hunt and visiting the visitor center where the staff were very friendly. One of the most unique places we have ever camped.
Michael T — Google review
Amazing place to visit. There are non-electric campsites among the rocks or electric campsites in a row outside of the rocks. The electric sites are typical campground with not much space between. The non-electric are spread out and most are quite private. This is is a hide and go seek paradise. Its fun exploring all the formations, nooks and crannies. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We stayed one night but could have easily stayed two. Check in at 4pm with checkout at 2pm gives plenty of time to explore the rocks. There is a separate set of rocks up on a lookout hill that you can hike to or drive to. There is a picnic table at the top with a parking lot. There are also several trails in the area for those staying longer than overnight. Sunset was amazing. Those camped along the Westside got an amazing view. We camped in site six which was interior to some rocks. A small trailer will fit but take care in backing in. Note that the bathrooms are not close to most sites. The visitors center has showers which were extremely busy in the morning even though the night we stayed there were not that many campers. Probably about 1/4 full on non-electric sites. The electric sites were completely full. Apparently they like the public bathroom better than their own.
Greg H — Google review
This was our first experience camping at City of Rocks. We had sites 20-25. 21-24 are rather close to each other. 20 is elevated and fairly separated from the other sites, but you have to hike a good 500 feet in from the parking spot. The rocks and bouldering are the main draw here, as well as the dark skies for stargazing. Other than the wind, November is a great time to visit. Be aware that the gate is locked at 9 PM each night. Drinking water was available during our visit, and the visitor's center has ice, and many other items you may have forgotten. Deming and Silver City are the closest towns nearby, about 30 minutes away for each.

The photos posted can’t express the “Ahhh experience” to this natural wonder. It is worth stopping off the beaten path and exploring. The RV and campsites were nice, offering electric and non electric sites. If you are not a fan of camping or are just traveling through it’s worth the hour or two stop and enjoying this natural beauty. The park also has a site rental for educational activities such as star gazing and other outdoor events. This information can all be found online or at the guest center/gift shop.

Enjoyed a cool, rainy day at City of Rocks. Visitor center staff is friendly. clean restrooms and a shower available, plenty of covered shelters with picnic tables. My group rented the big pavilion to hold an SCA event. Kids enjoyed climbing the huge rocks. Be careful with wildlife. A tarantula walked across our camp minding his business.
Elena F — Google review
Very cool. Huge boulders in the middle of the desert. The visitor's center has a map of where petroglyphs are. There are a lot of wonderful campsites amongst the rocks.

Located just three blocks south of the main drag, this museum housed in the old Armory building offers an impressive collection of old pottery, sparkling rocks, pioneer artifacts, toys, dolls, quilts, and dental equipment. Visitors are often surprised by the diverse range of exhibits covering various subjects. The impeccably kept facility and friendly staff make it a delightful stop on any road trip.
A small town museum with a very large collection covering all aspects of local history dating back to before Europeans arrived. This includes a substantial rock collection from all over the country. Restrooms were spotless, and the staff was super friendly. Admission is free, but donations are always appreciated.

This is one great museum and has a little bit of everything. Absolutely spotless and it's laid out wonderful. So many history items to look at, you can easily spend a couple hours here. A must see in Deming New Mexico.
Tim T — Google review
The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum is a true treasure for anyone who appreciates the history and culture of the American Southwest 🏜️. Located in the heart of Deming, this museum offers a deep dive into the region’s past — from the ancient cultures of Native peoples, including the Mimbres, to life on the frontier during colonial times and up through the 1970s 🏛️. A special highlight is the exhibit dedicated to Fort Cody — a key stronghold and protection for settlers during the harsh times of taming these lands ⚔️. Inside, you’ll find unique artifacts ranging from tools and clothing to photographs that tell stories of everyday life from those years 📸. Each exhibit seems to come alive, sharing tales of the resilience and endurance of the people who built their lives on the frontier, overcoming hardships and creating a lasting legacy 🛖. The collection covers a wide array of topics: archaeology, ethnography, early settlement history, and daily life, making the museum a truly vibrant and educational place for anyone wanting to grasp the spirit and character of this corner of America 🇺🇸. The attention to detail in preserving and presenting history is impressive, allowing visitors to literally touch the past ✨. For history lovers wanting to feel the atmosphere of the true Old West, this museum is a real gem 🌵. I highly recommend it to anyone interested not only in major historical events but also in the everyday lives of those who left their mark on this land 🕰️.

A ol timing museum with much to see! As an old armory, it has so much space for all kinds of exhibits! Even a second floor. It's a really great wall though not only Deming's history but American history. I only wish there was more info boards on the history of the Mimbres and their pottery. As a Pueblo Native, I was enjoying seeing these types of exhibits. There's a gift shop and other historical places to see nearby. This is definitely a must stop visit if you're in Deming!

I preface this with my wife is Indigenous. After going through the entire exhibit of the "founders" of the city we came to a room and my wife said, "Ah, look at that. Entire museum dedicated to the rich white people and only a small room dedicated to the original settlers. It was a nice museum. But I agreed with my wife.
Chad B — Google review
This is a big history museum in a small town with a history richer than many large cities. The exhibits are stunningly detailed in their attention to small things. Almost as if presented as a counterpoint to the little things, there are large full-sized vehicles in two or three areas that give us a sense of having been transported back into time. As a history lover, I was blown away. If museums reflect the community where they are based, Deming must be one amazing place.

Geronimo Springs Museum, located in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, is a must-visit venue for those interested in the area's rich history. The museum showcases a diverse collection of artifacts including fossils, arrowheads, and items from the Apache culture. Visitors can explore a recreated miner's cabin and learn about New Mexico's early mining industry. The museum also features an impressive display of Southwestern pottery dating back to 200 A.D.
This museum is completely amazing. At first glance it seems very small and humble but inside there is a great expanse of information ranging from fossils, local history, and native history. I've been to a lot of museums around the world and this humble place is easily one of my favorites. Harold, the docent was great to chat with and very informative. We are so happy we made this stop and explored what it had to offer. The fee to get in is nothing compared to what you get to experience. Definitely a highlight of our trip in New Mexico.

Don't miss this great museum. Although focused on local Sierra County history, various collections tap into the story of the entire state. Don't miss the bunkhouse in the back, the Mimbres pottery, or the Ralph Edwards' television show memorabilia. Huge thanks to the Buhler family for founding this iconic institution.
Jaima C — Google review
This is a very large collection of local American history. It’s also much larger on the inside than the outside leads you to believe. It’s definitely geared to adults and not children, just FYI for families. The collection includes an excellent collection of Indigenous American pottery from thousands of years ago to more recent history. There are cowboy artifacts, American Indian artifacts, lots of pictures and articles from local towns over the years. Then, of course, there is an entire room dedicated to The Name Change history and Ralph Edwards - the host of Truth or Consequences. It can take an hour or more depending on how in-depth you want to get with everything available. $6 to get in as of 05/25, and worth it.

This museum houses proof of a rich history of this area. From the city's beginnings, the age of Geronimo, the major commercial efforts of the area, and the Hollywood influence of this town, the exhibits are sure to hold everyone's interest. It's a pretty nice-sized museum with meandering rooms and even an added log cabin. My favorites are the Geronimo exhibits, the dresses from pageant winners, and the log cabin!

Hearing “Well get to them later” with a wave away as first-time visitors to this museum. I can’t say there are any customer service skills. The worker was more interested in talking with what seemed like locals than giving 2 guests walking in a greeting. We went to have a nice, educational experience and ended up taking a quick look around and leaving SUPER RUDE experience.

The property boasts scenic views and is within walking distance of Ralph Edwards Park.
What a View! Perfect Stop on Our Girlz Trip We stopped at Riverbend Hot Springs during a Girlz Trip and—WOW—what a view! The water was absolutely amazing, and soaking while looking out over the river and mountains was such a peaceful, unforgettable experience. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the entire area was clean and well-maintained. We especially appreciated the opportunity to see wildlife while we soaked—it added such a special touch to an already perfect visit. Highly recommend this stop if you're in the area. We'll definitely be back!

We selected this hotel for a trip to the Trinity site in October. The room was extra spacious with an oversized jacuzzi soaking tub by the east-facing window for sunrise. The ADA shower meant extra roomy bathroom, and the kitchenette was a perfect size. The service and walk-thru welcome were top notch, and staff did walk throughs of the soaking pools every 15m. Coffee and tea were always available and the amenities were unbeatable. The property and grounds are well landscaped and maintained, and the overlook onto the river is unsurpassed - why we chose this one over other hot springs hotels. The town of T or C is quite small with limited dining options, and fairly remote from ABQ or Las Cruces if you want to sight-see. That is the only downside of the location at all. Otherwise, the grounds and hotel are very nice and exceeded my expectations.

I've been to hot springs resorts all over the country and this is still in the top 3. Beautiful facility right on the Rio grande. This is a quiet, zen, relaxing atmosphere. 7 pools i think all different temps and dry sauna, cold showers. Private tubs available which I didnt try. Note that unique to most you purchase by the hour instead of day pass, and reservations are required

This overnight stay in our RV was just perfect. The hot springs are so clean and well maintained, as is the property! Quiet, peaceful feeling and hushed tones enhance the experience. Mesilla Plaza is a historic district and national landmark in New Mexico, offering a delightful blend of history, culture, and entertainment. The plaza features fabulous restaurants serving traditional Mexican dishes and live music performances by local artists. Nearby, the Fountain Theater, the oldest movie house in the state, showcases an array of films for visitors to enjoy. Additionally, visitors can explore the area's rich history at the old County Courthouse and browse through various specialty shops for souvenirs.
If visiting the El Paso are the quaint town of Mesilla is worth stopping at. Absolutely adorable. Hard to spend a whole day there however. A good morning or afternoon (e.g., 2-3 hrs, probably 4 max). Visit the artisan shops, enjoy a relaxing meal, and there was a artisan market on the Plaza when we were there. We stayed in El Paso and spent time there on our way to the White Sands Natilnal Park. The two were a great way to spend a day.

This area is worth stopping at if you are in the area. It's a place of American history. There is lots to see and lots to do. There are many small shops and restaurants to eat at. Billy the Kid was arrested in the area and held at the jail here. Los Postas and Andres are a must to eat at. If you don't eat at Los Postas at least go inside and check it out.

Where are the amenities in this area? This entire mesilla area has no shaded parking for travelers with dogs, no public restrooms (while many of the businesses dont have restrooms either), the handicapped parking (full) is located on the only curb without a ramp, and the only drinking fountain in the entire embarrassment is turned off. This is the middle of the desert, 100+ degrees, and Mesilla can't provide any tap water for the tourists to drink? The staff at the big church are also incredible ungodly. As a full-time traveler since 2014, i can confidently say, its not worth going out of your way to visit this area.

Visitors can explore interactive exhibits showcasing farming and ranching practices, including demonstrations of dairy farming and cooking techniques. The museum also features a variety of animals used in local farming, allowing guests to visit them in their corrals.
This is not so little gem of a museum in Las Cruces. We've been to Las Cruces sooo many times and wished we had visited this place sooner. It's extremely child friendly and has immersive exhibits. My son loved the kids area, the farming equipment and the animals. The staff is sooo sweet and very informative.

Wyler Aerial Tramway is an aerial cable car located on the eastern side of the Franklin Mountains in El Paso, Texas. Visitors can take gondolas to and from Ranger Peak and explore the nearly 200,000 acres of rock formations. The experience includes a gift shop, restrooms, and viewing platforms at the mountain peak. Once at the top, visitors have the option to enjoy sightseeing or embark on a hike along a trail above the desert sky.
Great place in El Paso Texas... You will love this experience! Once you are taken up the mountain, you have the option of staying and doing some sightseeing...or if you are up to it!... an awesome hike! They have access to a trail way above the desert sky... It's beautiful up here. We went early since it takes about 10-15 mins to load everyone in and take them up in groups of 6-8 depending. You could have a small picnic since the wind up there does not really allow for a full picnic. The trip up is pretty awesome! My daughter was a little scared but once we got up there, she absolutely loved it! Oh and take some money, they have a gift shop at the top. I can't believe that I grew up in El Paso and I never visited this park before. Parking is free but limited. Restrooms are clean. You do have the option to just hike for the day and I believe that it's free. You can see all of El Paso, parts of New Mexico and Juarez!

First time doing anything aerial and my husband and I loved it. The park rangers were very informative and knowledge. Great view of the mountain ranges and cities. On the website it suggested that you call before arriving due to weather conditions, please call ahead. A must do if you're in the area.

This is such a fun activity for a weekend adventure. I've been on it twice and both times I was just as impressed with the mechanics of the tramway and enthralled with the views at the top. The ascent is around 900ft with the gondola moving at a speed of, I believe, 9mph so it's nothing extreme. This is definitely a must if you have visitors from out of town. Just, overall, a lot of fun.

Great and cheap way to get to see all of El Paso and beyond. 360° view at the top with maps that point out all the different landmarks. We went on a Saturday evening and no one was there, but we were told it does get insanely crowded when deployments are about to head out from Fort Bliss and families are visiting.

Beautiful! I live in KC and every time I go to El Paso, this place was always closed! It was either due to rain or snow. However, this was a wonderful experience going up the mountain on the tram. The Park Ranger was very informative and made it a pleasant ride. We went on a sunny winter day and it was way colder up on the mountain. There’s hiking trails, awesome scenic views overlooking all of El Paso and Juarez, Mx. Must see if you’re in El Paso!

The line can be a little but it's worth the wait. Smooth ride on the tram. Beautiful mountain scenery. Very nice view of El Paso, Ciudad Juarez (Mexico), and New Mexico. Will visit again next time I'm in El Paso.

A must for native El Pasoans or those new to the area. Gives great views of nearly the entire city, Mexico, and New Mexico without the need for hiking (unless you want to). There's plenty of space on the viewing platform; I never had to fight for viewing space. Unfortunately, the gondolas lack any kind of air conditioning, so expect the four-minute ride to be stuffy. There's no running water at the top either (but there is a bathroom) so bring plenty of bottled water unless you want to purchase some at the gift shop.

Hands down an El Paso must. Very special views from this place. It's only open on weekends and I recommend sunrise or sunset to beat the crowds. It's much colder at the top so bring a jacket!

Sights & Landmarks
Scenic Drive Park East Rest Stop is a must-visit spot in El Paso, Texas. It offers a breathtaking view of the city and Juarez, Mexico across the Rio Grande. The drive itself is an experience with its winding roads that provide dramatic views of the surroundings. The small park and scenic overlook at the rest stop are perfect for capturing panoramic views of El Paso and Juarez. Despite limited parking space, it's definitely worth a short drive to reach this historical and picturesque location.
Haven't been to a sonic in many years. I wonder where all the ordering stalls went? Great place for mobile orders. Really quick with my slush Thanks y'all!

Great views if you look out across the city. Disgusting view if you look down the hill at all the trash and empty beer bottles thrown from this pull off. Sad that the people who live here don’t care enough to take care of this place.

Senic View Overlook in El Paso, TX Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Senic View Overlook in El Paso, TX, is a stunning spot that offers breathtaking views of both the city of El Paso and Juarez, Mexico. The overlook is steeped in history, having been built back in 1920, and remains a popular destination for both locals and visitors. Top 3 Lesser-Known Facts: 1. Historical Significance: Sonic View Overlook was originally constructed as part of a larger project to create scenic routes and public spaces in El Paso. It was intended to be a place where people could enjoy the natural beauty of the area while also appreciating the engineering feats of the time. 2. Architectural Style: The overlook features early 20th-century design elements, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. Its construction used locally sourced materials, making it a unique example of regional architecture from that era. 3. Cultural Landmark: During the 1920s and 1930s, Sonic View Overlook was a popular spot for community gatherings and events. It has witnessed countless sunsets and has been a silent observer of the growth and changes in the cities it overlooks. Interesting Story: One intriguing story about Sonic View Overlook involves a local legend from the 1930s. It is said that a young couple, deeply in love, would meet at the overlook every week to watch the sunset together. Despite the hardships of the Great Depression, their love blossomed, and they eventually got married right at the spot where they had shared so many sunsets. Their story became well-known in the community, symbolising hope and enduring love during difficult times. One of the Plaques also mentioned that in the 1920 there was a belief that Explosions or dynamite would cause rain. During a drought the city of El Paso requested for this testing to be tested here but no luck in bringing needed rain. Appeal for Preservation: While Sonic View Overlook is undeniably beautiful, it is disheartening to see that not everyone respects this historic site. Littering is a significant problem, with trash often being thrown over the edge despite the availability of trash cans. It is crucial for visitors to take responsibility for preserving this area by properly disposing of their waste and respecting the environment. Keeping Sonic View Overlook clean will ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty and historical significance. In summary, Sonic View Overlook is a remarkable place with stunning views and rich history. It deserves to be treated with care and respect to maintain its charm and significance for years to come.

The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a 35-acre park that houses over 220 African, American, and Asian species in natural habitat replicas. Families can enjoy exploring exhibits such as Animals of Africa, Animals of Asia, and Animals of the Americas. The zoo offers Zoo Adventure Programs for both children and adults, along with daily animal encounters featuring sea lions, eagles, monkeys, and more. Additionally, visitors can enjoy family-friendly attractions like a treehouse playground and a water play area.
The Zoo is always a fun place to visit and enjoy the company of wonderful animals, cool down in the splash pad, take a ride on the carousel 🎠 ride, run around the playground and indulge in a tasty treat. Love making memories with my family! 🦒 🦓 🐅 🐦

It's a zoo, surprise, honestly it's a decent zoo I've been to better also to worse. You can never predict if the animals are going to be active or not. I was sad to hear about the loss of a giraffe I was told there were still 3 there but we never saw them. When we went to the zoo had a few sections down for maintenance and repair but it didn't dampen the experience much. I liked how people in the park were passing along info to fellow guests about closures and better spots to see an animal very friendly. Bonus info You can purchase a ticket to get a face-to-face with a few of the animals for $40.00. We opted for the penguins encounter and it was great! They gave us instructions on how and where we could pet the penguins amazing experience I would highly recommend it if you want to do something a little more memorable. The staff was friendly and helpful.

I really want to support our local zoo, but every time I visit, I leave disappointed. Too many of the animal enclosures are consistently closed, which takes away from the overall experience — especially when you’ve paid full admission. I find myself trying to justify bringing the family, only to remember why it ends up feeling like a waste of time and money. A zoo should be more than just a walk through pathways. If most of the animal exhibits are inaccessible or hidden, it makes more sense to just visit a local park. For the price, guests deserve to see what the zoo promotes — not empty habitats. At this point, I’d rather make the 2-hour trip to the Albuquerque Zoo, where the experience is consistently more complete and worth the drive. El Paso Zoo has potential, but it really needs to step up — either improve accessibility to exhibits or adjust pricing to reflect what’s actually available.

We were really impressed with our trip and how the boys enjoyed their time here. The people are absolutely awesome and the atmosphere was great.

Thank you!

I liked this experience because the concert was one hour, and the pieces were short, a few minutes long. Often when I go to the symphony, it's a two or three hour event with the music pieces lasting a long time. It was good for my hyperactive self. Parking was easy at the zoo. It was casual experience, but elegant. This is my first time at such a event. #candlelight

This is on an active military base. You will need to check in at the guard house so they can check your ID and run a background check, then you can walk to the museum. There is tons of cool stuff set up to view outdoors. You can see the bleachers they use for viewing the testing sites. Lots of cool stuff of aircraft & history enthusiasts!

We visited after closing and so missed the inside of the White Sands Missile Range Museum. However, the outside is open to the public after hours. We spent about an hour walking the path and looking at the missiles, rockets, and equipment on display. The museum has a great collection on view. My husband will definitely come back during operating hours to visit the museum building. A fair number of the signs were so degraded by the weather that we couldn't read them (April 2025). The museum staff responded to another reviewer that replacement signs had been ordered. Once the new signs are installed, the quality and value of the exhibit will be greatly improved.

An amazing history lesson. Great museum to visit. I first visit the museum in 2005. The museum in 2005 no longer exists. Originally, the 2005 museum displayed a lot of unique and interesting rocketry items. All of those items are now in storage and not open for display. The outside Rockets are very unique and fun to visit. Also, they have another display that’s just as cool, but it is a single room with a rocket.

Active missile base. You will need your id and they will issue you a pass to be able to go to the museum. Most of it is outside but there's history of the area in the building. It is free

The White Sands Missile Museum was a fascinating and educational stop for our family! It’s free, easy to explore, and packed with history. The outdoor missile park is super impressive—our kids loved walking among the rockets and asking a million questions. Inside, the exhibits are well-done and tell the story of space exploration, military testing, and the science behind it all in a way that’s accessible for all ages. It’s a great blend of history, science, and wow-factor. Definitely worth a stop if you’re anywhere near White Sands!

Sights & Landmarks
White Sands National Park in New Mexico is a breathtaking destination featuring rare gypsum sand dunes, making it the largest such field in the world. The park offers a unique experience for visitors of all ages, with opportunities for activities like sliding down the dunes and hiking along various trails. It's recommended to visit during sunrise or sunset for an even more magical experience. However, visitors should be aware that the park may occasionally close due to nearby air force base activities.
One of the best sunsets I’ve seen. The sun makes the clouds colorful and the color changes millions times in an hour. Unlike other huge national parks, it does not need a week to explore everything, you can either enjoy the thrill of sand dune sliding or watch the sunset quietly.

Visitors center was very educational and nice to visit. The gift shops had a huge variety of souvenirs and personable employees who knew a lot about the park. There’s plenty of space at each stop for the volume of visitors and bathrooms available throughout the park. It was a great experience I would highly recommend.
Melanie D — Google review
It’s worth stopping here for two or three hours if you happen to be in the neighborhood, but it’s a mystery to me why this place was upgraded from national monument to national park, because it definitely does not deserve that distinction. There are a couple of interesting short walks, though the main boardwalk path has been closed for six months because an Air Force plane crashed near there.
Lisa W — Google review
We were able to visit the Park today, even though there is a government shutdown. I was surprised at the visitor center, kinda run down and the restrooms were really poor. But the stark beauty of the park was stunning! They only had it open to the Dune Trail, couldn’t go past that point. We walked part of the trail. It is beautiful!
Irene E — Google review
White Sands National Park is a super cool & different place to see. It is an easy 45 minute drive from Las Cruces. We visited on a Monday midmorning. It was not busy. They do have limited trailer/bus parking. There is a park store with National Park souvenirs and a small exhibit as well as a gift shop where you can rent sleds. The Dunes Drive I believe is approximately 8 miles to the loop at the end. Along the drive there are a few parking areas that have picnic tables and restrooms. Many of the areas toward the end of the loop allow you to walk and sled on the sand. There are a couple trails to hike as well as remote camping when allowed. Make sure to bring water before entering the park as they don’t have services in the park. We spent about an hour exploring the park(we did not hike the trails). White Sands is massive but the park felt smaller than expected. If you’re in the area or can make a quick detour it’s worth seeing in person!
Emily S — Google review
The sand cools as the sun sets and it's not so windy like at many beaches, so there's quite a sense of serenity especially if you venture out to some of the more isolated dunes. Definitely the most ethereal national park I've been to The National Park center also lets you rent sleds to ride down the dunes and wax to apply to their bottoms, and although it's not quite as slick as snow sledding, there are some steep dunes that are about 30 ft high for you to gather enough speed to get a decent run. There's also hardly any internet connection once you're there, so make sure you have the physical map or have downloaded it in Google maps
Emc2 — Google review
This is a must visit national park! The views were absolutely beautiful and the sand was ice cold! I would definitely recommend bringing sun screen and renting the sand sleds at the park with the wax. We brought our own plastic snow sleds and waxed them but they didn’t work as well as the ones they offered for rent. Since the government shut down is still going on the park admission was free. I will note that there is construction going on in the park right now so it did take about 15 mins to get to the back of the park to see the dunes. Overall it was an amazing experience with life changing views.

Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site

State park
Sights & Landmarks
Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site is a captivating destination located in the mountainous region of El Paso County. Spanning 860 acres, this park is renowned for its stunning natural hollows filled with water, which inspired its name—derived from the Spanish word "hueco," meaning hollow. Visitors can explore ancient rock art that reflects the rich Native American history of the area while enjoying guided and self-led tours.
It's a neat place for climbing, hiking, and sight seeing. There is a lot to discover in this place and the people working there are nice. It's even better when you have a guide like Julian, who is clearly very knowledgeable of the park and will guide you to some of the best places that Hueco Tanks has to offer. I can't emphasize how brilliant Julian was as a guide. He's full of cool facts about the place and knows how to get people all over the place safely. Anyone visiting this place needs to understand that they need to be at least a little bit fit physically because some places are challenging to get to, but they are worth it.

This is a unique park that has a limit to the number of people who can enter daily. It’s known for its petroglyphs and Hueco tanks, which translate to hollows that hold water, some of which can be seen easily and others that are only accessible by Ranger guided tours. We stopped by on the way to New Mexico and there was no one available for tours at the time. It’s really hot during the summer and therefore not very crowded. You’ll need to plan ahead in cooler weather. They don’t take online reservations - you have to call in.
Jan P — Google review
Hueco Tanks has been on my elderly father-in-law's bucket list since reading about the tanks in his Western novels. We had permits for Sunday, but it was supposed to rain, so we decided to try Saturday morning. The two young ladies at the check in were absolutely precious and made sure he got his wish. The gentleman in the video area was very patient and explained the trails carefully so we would know what we should attempt and what we shouldn't. He also arranged for Carlos to show us around. Carlos was extremely knowledgeable and incredibly patient. The area is beautiful and definitely fulfilled a wish for my father-in -law. The people who work there are just as beautiful and special as is the state park.

This was one of the best state park experiences we’ve ever had! We did the Pictograph guided hike #1 and it was fabulous. Park Ranger Nicole did an outstanding job and her knowledge of the flora and fauna, park and pictograph history made it a meaningful experience. Highly recommend! This park has limited access so reserve early.

Went on a guided tour with a friend! The ranger was great! She didn’t pressure anyone to do any activity that they were not comfortable doing. We even saw a group of javelinas in the park before our tour started. Be sure to stop at the headquarters office to pay when entering the park, and stop in to let them know when you leave the park. I don’t recommend hiking here when it is too hot outside.

I recently visited for some day hiking, and tried exploration of a true oasis in the rough deserts of West Texas... this was nothing less than spectacular. This was my first trip to Hueco Tanks, this is part of the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo ancestral lands, and as a descendant of the Ysleta/Tigua I truly appreciate the care taken of this land, and the respect shown to the archeological significance of this site. A wonderful place to visit, I look forward to returning and taking a guided tour. Thank you to the caretakers of this land.

Mountains
Guadalupe Peak is an iconic destination within a national park, offering hiking trails and backpacking opportunities. The peak is known for its stunning views and unique geological features, including a fossil reef. Hikers can expect a challenging but rewarding 8.4-mile round trip to the summit, with varying weather conditions and temperature changes along the way. Visitors recommend bringing plenty of water and snacks for the journey, as well as taking time to rest and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.
I will be one of the few posts that didn't make it to the peak. I have Neuropthy in my legs, so I knew they would get weak before making it 3,000 feet of elevation. However, I enjoyed my hike, making it a little over 2 miles up before running into packed ice/snow. So, since I didn't have poles to help with balance, I decided to turn back. It was a challenging but beautiful hike. I had lunch in the shade of trees and soaked in the views. It took me a little over 4 hours to go 2 miles and return. Polls would definitely be recommended for hiking down, as it wears your knees out. I definitely wish I had come a few years earlier to experience the peak. I'm glad to have the opportunity today to hike as far as I did.
Alan B — Google review
The hike up is pretty much uphill the entire way up. The last mile is absolutely the hardest, not the first two. Hiked this peak in the snow and ice and highly recommend micro-spikes and trekking poles. Come prepared with water and the proper clothing. It took us a little less than 6 hours total to hike up and back with around 20 minutes at the top and frequent picture stops.
G M — Google review
This hike was a very difficult yet very rewarding hike! This will definitely be one of the biggest physical accomplishments in my recent memory. I highly recommend this hike!!!

Great hike and views. I'm over 60 and round tripped the hike in under 6 hours including time at the summit. Completed on a warm, sunny February day without much wind.

Awesome! Really cool trail. Czech republic guys did it 2:15 up to the hill. 1:50 back down to the car. Yeah - we are used to walk 😉 But - a lot of water! And respect the weatherforecast. When we finished a huge thunderstorm came.
Martin V — Google review
Pretty well kept I would say, great views and some challenging spots for a little test. Two spots that are like blocked off can go unnoticed and it takes you off the trail and can get you in a tough spot but if you use your phone to check and make sure you are on the trail, you should be fine. Some loose rocks can get tricky coming down so take your time and enjoy the views.
Willie R — Google review
Very awesome hike for the moderate and advanced hiker. Met a lot of cool people from far and near. Went there when there was the arctic freeze so trauma bonded with a few people on how cold it was. Overall had a blast! Would recommend this place to any hiker.

The Guadalupe Peak Trail is an unforgettable experience, especially in winter. We hiked it when the trees and bushes were covered in ice and snow, turning the trail into a magical wonderland. It took us 7.5 hours round trip, including 30 minutes at the peak to take in the breathtaking views and pure awe of standing on the highest point in Texas. The icy conditions did make parts of the trail slippery on the way down, so be prepared with good footwear and take it slow. Despite the challenges, it was worth every single step. The beauty of the trail and the sense of accomplishment at the summit made this an adventure we’ll never forget. Highly recommend for those up for the challenge!

Prada Marfa is a unique art installation located in Valentine, Texas, about 30 minutes from Marfa. Created by artists Elmgreen and Dragset in 2005, it resembles a high-end designer boutique with seasonal fashion displays visible through its glass windows. Despite its appearance, there is no access inside the structure. The unexpected sight of a Prada store in the middle of nowhere adds to its allure and makes for an amusing experience for visitors.
What a cute side attraction. Just out in the middle of nowhere. Make sure you're gassed up and got food and drinks for the drive and have gone to the bathroom beforehand. People seem to just park on the side off the road, which there is room for. To the right of the Prada building, there is a fence covered in locks that people have left during visits. Pretty cool. If you continue the drive after, there is a mini Walmart the size of a small shed, and if you pay close eye out, there will be a mini Buckeyees shed on the opposite side of the road out there too. Cute side road attractions. Prada build was cool. Did have purses and shoes in it.

This location is a treasure to discover while on your journey. Bring a lock to leave on the gate, symbolizing your connection to this spot. It’s a unique opportunity to leave a piece of yourself behind for others to cherish. The store is crafted with perfection, offering amazing items that inspire awe. It's an ideal destination for capturing stunning photos, especially for fashion lovers. The atmosphere is vibrant, and the desert scenery is truly captivating. While driving, take a moment to pause and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

This is a neat art installation in the middle of nowhere so it stands out. Apparently Beyoncé had a photo op here is what I was told by another visitor. You can’t go in but there were many visitor taking pictures and there’s a large pull off across the road to park. Also bring a lock to write your message and lock on the surrounding fence.
BJ C — Google review
This was a fun little stop for a photo-op. We didn't know about the fence behind the art display, where people can place locks on the fence. We spent more time looking at that and seeing all the different locks (some engraved) than we did anything else. We may return again with a lock next year.

University of Texas McDonald Observatory

Museums
Observatory at UT Austin with an exhibit gallery, theater for solar viewings & tours of telescopes.
This is a great visit if you have an afternoon and evening to be in the area. I made reservations a week prior for a guided tour, a solar viewing, and the evening Star Party. I showed up at 12:30 pm and the Solar Viewing started at 1pm and lasted about 45min. It included a great presentation about the sun and included live feeds from their solar telescope with lots of great information. Very cool! At 2:00 pm the guided tour starts with a brief overview of what to expect and then a trip up to the two biggest telescopes they have with a detailed discussion of how they work and how they are used. They do not have any daytime viewing but the tour was excellent. The entire tour lasted about 2 hours. There is a 4 hour break before the Star Party starts. Sign in between 8:30-9 and the program starts at dark around 9:30 this time of year. We had some clouds come in but we did get a little time on the telescopes and then went inside for a “make up” presentation that show slides of what we were supposed to see. Even missing out on a full 2 hours of telescopes the program was fantastic. The staff is great and their passion shows for what they do.
Bradford C — Google review
It was okay. Discouraging though for our younger kids and especially our 9 year old who is very interested in astronomy to not have really any engagment or observation of equipment. The day tour is just a lecture so not really worth it with pictures and info readily available on YouTube. No real value in making the trip to see just the outside of buildings and view from the mountains especially for kids 6, 9, 11, 16 with me.
Nathan W — Google review
Don't ask if they have a veteran's discount, apparently the lady at the front doesn't like it. Definitely make reservations or all you can do is get a general admission self guided tour. And you'll see nothing but the Observatory lobby, and the telescope lobby. The views outside are nice tho.
Chris P — Google review
This is our second time at McDonald Observatory and we stayed for the afternoon telescope tour. Recommended Reservations. 1. Solar viewing at 1pm. 2. Telescope tour at 2pm. 3. If a weekend night there are usually Star Parties after sunset. The visitor center has a nice amount of astronomy and Telescope info. Allow about an hour just for this, before or after your tours.

Choice place to learn about astronomy. The drive to and from is very scenic. Tours are available, star parties, the visitors center has a wealth of information, displays, and videos explaining all aspects of the observatory. I have been here several times and it never disappoints. My recent visit was for a star party and it was excellent.

Don’t bother unless you’re able to book the “Star Party”. The general admission ($3) only gets you to 2 small lobbies of the telescopes, a view of the outside of the HET, and the gift shop. The views up/down the mountain to get there were sadly the best part.

Fort Davis National Historic Site is a well-preserved former frontier military post that operated from 1854 to 1891. The site features meticulously preserved adobe and brick buildings showcasing artifacts of daily life in a Western fort. Visitors can explore the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute, located nearby, which offers an array of desert-related attractions including an arboretum, greenhouse, mining exhibit, and hiking trail.
This was a special weekend. We watched some employees dressed in 1880 baseball attire play some visitors. It was fun, and icicles were handed out afterward. Then we watched a demo of the cannon and big gun. Which was awesome. The best part for me was taking part in folding the gigantic US flag. It was a great visit. The rangers were all awesome. Great place to visit.

This place beautifully combines history and scenery in one visit. The museum exhibit was especially memorable—seeing toys like spinning tops from my own childhood brought back a wave of nostalgia. It’s a fantastic spot for both learning about the past and enjoying a walk down memory lane. Highly recommend for anyone who loves history, culture, and a touch of personal nostalgia!

Found fascinating and learned some history. Opens at 8 and I recommend coming early if you plan to hike up the trail during summer. Hike is beautiful and views are amazing. If you decide to do hike I recommend wearing pants for thorny bushes along trail.

2 camels were here today as a tribute to the Camel Corps of the late 1850s. Also saw a rattlesnake. The Fort has lots of info, knowledgeable rangers. Enjoyed our visit

I love how well preserved the place is. Very educated. Cool to see how things were back then with the rooms set up and display

Go when it is cool. The history of the post is well depicted, with restorations of the hospital at the top of my list. Excellent exhibits of Buffalo Soldiers and Apaches. Catch them before Trump has them removed.

We live in Florida. We bought a membership. Does that tell you how awesome this place is? Had a wonderful time. Staff is fabulous. The trails are great. The gift shop is terrific. The cactus museum is fabulous and we hope to return again this trip to check out the bird blind. YOU need to join and post great things here on Google and everywhere else you can think of. :) 10 STARS!

A must see when near Fort Davis! The cactus museum was really special. Didn’t get to do hiking this time, but wish we had.

Absolutely magnificent! Give yourself plenty of time because there is so much to learn and see! The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable.

If you like cactus, this is the place! Very nice trails with plants identified and spots to sit and reflect. Nice visitor center with space to sit down, relax and enjoy the view. Somewhat handicap accessible. The trails are pea gravel and on a gentle grade. If you are on wheels, you should have fat tires or it will be tiresome to traverse. Mining heritage exhibit is nice too. Would be good for the kids. I’m told the actual hiking trails are spectacular, with views to match.

Lovely botanic gardens with lots of cactus. If you like desert plants this is a paradise.

$6.50/adult was the cost when I went SEP 2022 Great place to get outta the city at. There's four different hiking trails that vary in difficulty. There's a botanical gardens of native species. In the gardens, they have a cactus greenhouse as well. Right before the gardens, there's a bird blind. Trails are well marked. Thank you all at the visitors center for the info. Extremely insightful as to what I should be keeping my eyes peeled for. They mentioned that there were aoudas (?) and mainly birds out. Though when I was leaving, I was told there was a bobcat sighting. I asked about snake 'n' other little critters that can cause harm if I'm not paying attention. They informed me that they're not common at all-- especially during mid-day. The visitors center has a gift shop. A ton of books that are geared towards outdoors, the Chihuahuan desert, and plants. They have stickers, cups, shirts, field guides, 'n' more. There's a bathroom, a water fountain, and a station to refill water bottles. Drinking tap water is safe-- per what I was told. My water bottle was too big to fill at the station so they let me use the tap in their kitchen. I did not see the mining exhibit this time around. Nor did I walk through the gardens to see what's changed. The trails were where I went What I found really cool is how they're trying hard to be as renewable as possible. Their lights are powered by a solar panel on grounds. They also redirect rain water to help increase biodiversity.

Really cool place! Highly recommend. We spent about 5 hours there hiking and checking out the gardens and green house. Nice visitor center. Very helpful staff. You must do Clayton's overlook trail. Cool 360° display of mountains and volcanic history. Easy trail. We hiked the outer loop trail which starts with Modesta canyon, then winds around Lions head and past the old quarry. Then it brings you to Claytons overlook. Overall around 2.5 miles moderate to strenuous. The hardest part was going down and up through the canyon. The greenhouse was awesome, over 200 species of cacti. The mine museum was very interesting as well nice displays of different types of ores and old mine equipment. I can't think of any negatives at all.

The Botanical Gardens are stunning. Plan for at least 2 hours to see all of the exhibits. This is a photographer’s dream. Check out my pics please. The hiking trails are rugged, take the hikes seriously and wear sturdy boots if you have them. Pack lots of water and enjoy the wilderness.

Balmorhea State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park
1.75-acre spring-fed swimming pool is the star of this 45-acre desert park that also offers lodging.
What a delightful state park! We were finally able to make reservations as the RV campsites have been under construction for the last couple of years. We made a reservation for one night, on our way west. We arrived after dark, yet the after-hours instructions and gate code were easy to navigate. The site was perfect. It was a nice level pull-through site, with excellent connections for electricity and water. There is a dump site for grey and black water. We also had a lovely covered picnic area, and the sites are not too close together. The view in every direction is magical in all the ways that West Texas promises. Balmorhea pool is spectacular with crisp, clear water and lovely trees and landscaping. I can't believe this amazing park is so inexpensive. We will be back!

Wonderful campground with a huge swimming area fed by the springs. Water was crystal clear and had lots of fish and turtles. It's refreshing at 72 degrees and perfect for a hot summer day. The pool area is over an acre so it's huge! Perfect place to relax and recharge. Staff were friendly and helpful. Already looking forward to my next visit!

This is a great place to spend some time. We only stopped for one night on a road trip, but definitely would like to spend more time there! The campsite was level and nicely maintained. Bathrooms were clean and the showers worked well with plenty of hot water. The setting was rural enough to allow a beautiful sky view, which the coyotes in the distance also enjoyed.

Theyve just absolutely nailed it with this state park! I checked in with the lovely Sarah. So Patient, courteous and helpful, exactly what you'd expect from a Texas state park. She was just helpful from the beginning and once I checked in OMG! This part is amazing. The place itself is small but friendly and the springs you swim in are absolutely amazing. Well done, especially you Sarah. You made my day!

It was a beautiful dessert oasis. I stayed 3 nights here, but honestly, I probably should have only stayed 2 or 1. If this is on your route, definitely stop and stay the night or the afternoon. It's a great place to cool off and the water is beautiful. Make sure you bring snorkeling equipment. The water is clear and there are plenty of fish to watch. If you do stay a night or two (I stayed in the campground), Make sure you have everything you need with you. There are no close grocery stores (50 minutes away) and there are not a lot of choices to eat out if you plan to (I planned two nights of camping and one night out to eat). About 35 minutes away is Jon's Caboose Ice cream, which we really enjoyed, it's also right near Fort Davis. Make sure you have tons of stuff to keep flies away while camping, the amount of flies were insane. I had about 20 in my car, about 60 surrounding my campsite and other people were having the same problems. Ended up driving the 50 miles just to get fly traps, bug zapper and fly spray and even that didn't fix the problem. It was almost impossible to eat dinner. The campsites were beautiful, clean, the scenery was beautiful and I enjoyed a fire every night. The mountains kept me cool enough to sleep at night, but I also had a fan set up on my cooler inside leading from an extension cord outside.

Truly beautiful park, the spring pool is crystal clear and you can see turtles if they aren't hiding, the fish aren't shy at all though. You can snorkel or dive, which i highly suggest, it's just so beautiful Def a waste to just swim lol. Headquarters also has souvenirs (I love collecting enamel pins so I was really happy to see they had them) hope this park will be here for generations will def be revisiting :)

Very nice state park with w/e and paved sites. Also has covered picnic tables at each site. Nice sink and dishwashing area at the bathhouse. Bathrooms are very nice as well. No shade, but it is the desert. AT&T cell service was decent. Would definitely stay here again.

This was easily one of the highlights of our entire cross country roadtrip. We spent all day here snorkeling with the fish and turtles. It’s super clean, the staff and clientele are very friendly, and the private hot showers in the bathroom are an added luxury. There’s a certain magic to this place that I haven’t experienced anywhere else. It’s truly a unique experience that I can’t recommend enough.

Cool statue! Good for some photos with the family or by its self. Next time you're passing through, just stop by and check it out. It's free! While you're at it, check out the out town.
Jason M — Google review
This is a nice statue. The town decorates for special occasions. Today Paisano Pete had a Large Homecoming Mum hung on him. There are 4 shallow steps to climb (not sure if there is a ramp I didn't check the other side) and generous space around the statue so you don't feel like you are going to fall down the steps. It is on a pie wedge shaped corner right before Historic Fort Stockton arch. Parking is across the street.

Odessa Meteor Crater

Visitor center
Sights & Landmarks
An aptly named landmark featuring the 2nd-largest U.S. meteor crater, a trail & visitor's center.
I can't evaluate the museum, because we were there on Memorial Day, & the museum is always closed on Mondays. I enjoyed seeing the plants and lizards, so different than what I see in Pennsylvania. There were a number of wildflowers blooming, possibly due to thunderstorms the previous day or so. The Crater itself isn't overwhelming, because it has filled in considerably from the elements. And yet I still found it intriguing.
A. A — Google review
Nice displays in the visitor center. It would have been neat to see it before it's been mostly filled in due to nature. Still worth a stop. Donations appreciated.
Lisa B — Google review
If you come, don't expect to walk into a deep crater because it has been mostly filled in over the many years since this was created. However, there is a trail that allows you to walk over the filled in areas with historical information from the research that was done many years ago. The trail leads you into and around the outer edge of the crater and into a museum. I was surprised that the museum was opened on July 4th. Inside you can read more about the crater, see artifacts, and learn more about the site.

Other than my daughter and future son in law finding a puppy (pic of puppy at vet next day)that was dumped....it was a very interesting place!
Vic K — Google review
Two craters formed as a result of meteor impacts. Note that the craters, while large, are mostly filled in.
Bruce P — Google review
Located just outside of Odessa, TX, 3 miles South of I-20. It was very easy to locate, and is well worth the visit if you are in the area. Unlike the Barringer Crater in AZ, this is not a family owned cash grab. It's free admission, has a small, but interesting museum, and they rely heavily on donations and sales to maintain the place. The site actually has two impact craters, one which is completely filled in and one that is mostly filled. They have a footpath around the crater rim area with plenty of informational signs. As you leave the site, there are signs designating the bodies of our solar system. It's crazy to think about the scale of it. The inner rocky planets and sun were all located within about 200 feet of another, and three miles later there's Pluto.
James R — Google review
Interesting details on the impact site. Short trail through the depressions. Lots of rocks to look at 👍🏻. Covered picnic tables. Museum is closed on Mondays.
Jess L — Google review
Neat stop if you have the time....they think the meteor hit 50,000 years ago and initially created a 100 foot deep crater....which has sine filled in to only 6 feet deep...interesting to see and it's free. Pay attention to the small planet signs on the right side of the road when you leave for a real life example of how far apart the planets are.

The Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in Midland, TX offers a captivating journey through the region's historical ties to oil and gas. Spanning over 60,000 square feet, the museum boasts interactive exhibits that delve into the area's petroleum industry roots and geological history dating back over 230 million years. Visitors can explore indoor and outdoor displays, including a sports car exhibit, artwork, and a hall of fame.
We weren't sure what to expect from a petroleum museum (sounds dull), but we had a great time! My ten year old rated it 5/5 one of her best museum experiences. They had lots of interactive displays and experiences. My husband really liked the fancy car displays.

We absolutely loved this museum! My family and I visited from El Paso and we were very surprised as to how nice and how interactive this museum is. It is definitely a must see when visiting Midland. It is extremely informative in a very fun way for an all family experience. Their customer service is also amazing. My son unfortunately forgot his phone at the museum and the staff were so very kind to mail us the phone and so very nice to include a post card.

Very neat museum to go through. This is probably the best Harvest Host we have stayed at yet. Other then a little road construction that made the GPS a little loopy getting off the HWY, it was very easy to get to and the large open parking lot made it easy as well. though we arrive later in the afternoon and didn’t get to spend as much fine as we would have liked in the museum, we did get to walk the grounds for a while and look at all the older machinery. We will definitely make another stay when we are back in the region.
