We visited the place on November 16, 2023. It is open to the public for a week only. We checked the website to make sure the opening hours. This garden is inside Niiyama Shrine. Even if this garden is not open, the shrine is worth a visit with its equally pretty autumn colors. There are small stalls on the way to the garden and the shrine, giving a very pleasant atmosphere. People said it was warm this year and thus the leaves had not turned red enough yet, but I loved the different colors of yellow, orange, red, and even green.

It's a beautiful spot to see the autumn colours. It's only open to the public 9 days per year though wo make sure to check in advance!

(Translated by Google) On the first day it opened, I initially thought there were limited transportation options when checking online, but upon arrival, I found there were actually quite a few. I'm not sure if the website wasn't fully integrated or if they were simply overlooked. The entrance fee was a bit pricey, but still acceptable. The autumn leaves weren't in full bloom yet, but overall they were quite nice, and some spots looked even better in photos than they do in person. A higher platform up the steps offered complimentary tea, and there were also desserts available for purchase. I chose a few, sat down, and enjoyed tea while admiring the view – it was quite a pleasant experience. Very nice open air museum / park. The signs were translated in english and a nice volunteer guide came to explain some of the history of the place. I saw many families and I agree it's a nice activity for kids, they will love being able to enter the houses.

Phenomenal. So many staff around to guide people. The park is unbelievably clean and well kept. The structures are really authentically recreated and you can enter most of them. They have some museums and other things to do inside the park as well. One of the coolest things I’ve come across in Kyushu.

The park is way bigger than one would expect (maybe) and if you love history, certainly make your way out here. They even have workshops and I loved the one I joined because I love stones. Seeing the Yayoi life in the past was a good experience. You can walk around the park to check out the old houses and the ancient burial. There is a roving bus. There’s a big part of the park that’s good for kids (or so the guide at the community center told me because I didn’t explore that part). Worth visiting!
Bernadette G — Google review
Relaxing day out from Fukuoka. There’s not a lot of detailed information in English, but the site is very interesting, don’t miss the burial mound. Beautiful views as well.
Chloe A — Google review
It's an extremely large area. The train is about the same distance from Yoshinogari Koen Station or Kanzaki Station. I want to be prepared to walk steadily. It feels good when the weather is nice. You can learn about jar coffins. The experience center is also fun.
Youji N — Google review
Plentiful of open spaces and historical artifacts built to scale. A fun place for the family amidst nature. The park is huge. For a start, take the free shuttle bus to go round the park. Then select places of specific interest to you. Bring along food for a small picnic (there are also provisions for BBQ on site) as the restaurant maybe fully booked up. Enjoy!
Shirley N — Google review
Very cool experience for a visit to the museum or to just have a picnic in the park. The grounds are beautiful and they have daily activities that you can do for an additional fee. Also, they have multiple paid parking lots around the place. It’s huge so plan to do a lot of walking.

(Translated by Google) It was a magnificent temple deep in the mountains. There were many trees, which gave it a slightly refreshing feel, and some people walked up from the foot of the mountain, but since we were with our 88-year-old parent, we drove up to the very edge of the temple. It's a little hard to find, but it's best to drive up to the Takeya sign and park your car there. The road is narrow, so you need to be careful, but I definitely recommend going. I highly recommend it.

(Translated by Google) Thank you!!! The scent of incense is calming. There are also statues of Buddhas to stroke. There are carp ranging from mini to giant in the pond. So cute! You can also ring a large bell inside the temple. There are many stone Buddhas on the cliffs. And there's a gigantic, mega-dead-big pheasant cart! So cute! It's because a pheasant once guided Saicho. The gigantic, mega-dead-big pheasant cart has appeared in pre-war photographs, so it's quite a veteran. Even on holidays, there aren't that many people here. It's quiet. I wonder if the reason there are so many amulets with Sanskrit characters on them in Kiriku is because they are of the Thousand-Armed Kannon? There's also a statue of Amida Buddha. On my way up the mountain, I found a yellow flower. Another hiker told me, "This is a rare flower! It's probably going to be stolen soon." On the way back, I saw about ten hikers gathered around the flower, so I thought it must be quite rare, and when I looked it up, I found out it's called "Kinran." It seems to be endangered. As the person said, pilfering is also one of the reasons for the decline in numbers. I hope there are still some left. FUKUOKA PayPay Dome is a versatile venue that serves as the home of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks baseball team and also hosts concerts. Situated in the Seaside Momochi district, it is surrounded by public art and landmarks such as Fukuoka Tower. The area boasts a futuristic streetscape with high-rise buildings and various artworks, creating a museum-like atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
It’s my childhood memory of this place and finally I got to visit there again after over 20 years later! It’s a huge openable dome and nice to walk around it and they happened to have the baseball game so tons of people were walking around! Cool stuff! It’s one of the attractions in Fukuoka so come visit and feel the big dome! Cheers 🥂

Seeing a baseball game is a must if you're in Japan at the right time. The stadium was well organised, queues for food moved quickly and you could get drinks easily from your seat. The atmosphere is amazing!
Patrick G — Google review
First time attending a concert, decided it would be TWICE in Japan, only to be a bit disappointed you can't record it. Nevertheless the Mizuho PayPay Dome is spacey with options getting from either Bus or Train (with 15 minutes walk). The place did not disappoint. Food shops nearby are reasonably price as well.
Adryel F — Google review
I've never watched a baseball game before but finally my 11yo is showing some interest so my family including 9yo booked to go! We went straight after school and while still light headed in to grab some food and find out seats. Its basically everything we've seen on YouTube- a beautiful stadium - clean, great viewing angles, fun cheering and beer and ice cream girls floating around. My kids loved it and the game was hugely exciting between SH and Hokkaido Fighters. We loved how easy it was to access toilets and food areas and everyone nearby was very well behaved and into the excitement. We'll definitely come back again.
Alex Y — Google review
I have been a fan of the Hawks for several years and have seen them several times in the Dome. It's an experience every time. The Dome is very well organised and tp structured. The rows are shorter than in other stadiums, which is good if you have a seat in the centre, then not so many people have to stand up to let you through. Go Hawks!
Veronika R — Google review
Got tickets via Klook! Was seated with many Koreans, mixed in with Japanese. The atmosphere is amazing, the baseball culture here is great, and the game was very fun. Overall would love to come again after finishing all NPB stadiums (been to 3/12 NPB stadiums)

Tosu Premium Outlets

Factory Outlets
Tosu Premium Outlets, located in Tosu City, Saga Prefecture, is a modern shopping center that opened in 2004. It's known for its easy accessibility from various parts of Kyushu and offers over 170 international and Japanese high-end brands. The outlet features a spacious parking lot and is particularly lively on holidays.
We spent a day exploring Tosu Premium Outlets, and it turned out to be a surprisingly fun part of our Kyushu road trip. Right off the expressway, the parking was huge and free, so unloading bags and diving into stores was a breeze. The open-air layout really impressed us. Everything is set out like a Southern California town—bright white walls, terracotta roofs, and palm-lined walkways. It just feels fresh and airy, a nice change from the usual indoor malls. The weather was lovely too, which made walking from shop to shop feel like a mini vacation. With around 170 brands spread across several categories, we found everything we needed—Western luxury labels like Coach and Michael Kors, sports brands like Nike, and even local Japanese names. I scored some really good deals during seasonal sales, and the outlet also offers tax-free shopping for travelers. While the mall was crowded on the weekend, it never felt overwhelming thanks to its spacious design. If you want to take a breather, there are plenty of seating areas, playgrounds for kids, and even nursing rooms. When hunger hit around lunch, we chose from ramen, fried chicken, pasta, and more in the central food court, which was perfect for a refuel. They also offer free Wi-Fi, coin lockers, and even pet-friendly zones—so everything felt convenient, whether I wanted to work, shop, or walk the dog. If you’re visiting Fukuoka, Nagasaki, or Saga, this outlet is a solid stop—not just for shopping, but for the laid-back, resort-like experience.
Gator — Google review
Parking: Great parking area if you're driving. There were plenty of parking and the outdoor mall is connected by a bridge. Food: Not bad. Way better than the ones in the USA. Shopping: If you've been to the outlets in the USA, there's no comparison. There weren't many options and the prices are not cheap. Not cheap at all. This is supposed to be an outlet, not a regular shopping mall. I think if you're living in Asia, you'll probably like this place. However, if you're living in the USA, skip this place. It's going to be a waste of time for you.
Duncan C — Google review
If you’re looking for a big outlet with lots of branded shops, this is the one for you! It’s quite a bit of a travel, but definitely worth it. For me, it’s even better than Ships and Lalaport. The only downside (besides the distance) is the long line for food, so it’s best to bring something to eat or have a snack beforehand. Overall, a great place to shop and spend the day! 🛍️
Rafael M — Google review
The usual stores you will find at other Premium Outlets. It’s not as big as the one at Gotemba but still worth a visit. Show your passport and you will get a tax exception on your bill. I was told that next year (2026) you can only get your tax refund at the airport like in most countries. We spend a few hours here and found some nice bargains. I had some of the best burgers ever at the food court.
Marcel B — Google review
The place is nice as a venue, but the outlet prices often didn't differ much (if at all) from regular retail. Didn't buy anything except some Nike shoes – both Nike and Adidas likely will have the more compelling sale prices for shoes. Spent less than an hour here and ended up leaving since there wasn't much for us – definitely can't compare to outlet shopping in Europe. The free parking is a plus though.
Jonathan C — Google review
Good place to shop. Not too crowded and good selwction of brands. Tosu also offered very nice countryside scenery.
Jonathan M — Google review
An absolute shopping paradise. So many great brands at massive discounts—especially during the Golden Week promo! Most shops had 20% off for 3 items or more, and I could also claim a 10% tourist tax rebate. On top of that, many items were already marked down 40–60% off original prices, so the discounts stacked up really well. Scored quality stuff from Onitsuka Tiger, EDWIN, Calvin Klein, GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, and more. Great mix of style and value—definitely worth a trip!

Mamedamachi Shopping Street is a charming and traditional area, often likened to 'little Kyoto' for its antique and traditional atmosphere. The street is known for its heritage, with shops selling wooden clog shoes and delicious treats like the Sui cheesecake roll. While it may not be widely recognized, it offers a nice shopping experience with various shops and restaurants to explore. Visitors can enjoy a casual stroll through this quaint area, making it a recommended stop for both travelers and tourists alike.

It's a small market but has enough shops to look around and shop. It was interesting to watch traditional drum performance which was unexpected. It's quite a long performance but end of that, you can join the session that allows you to participate to play the drum under the performance team's instruction which I missed out.

We went here for the festival with lanterns on November 11, 2023. The evening is not typical on most days and I believe shops are closed at 5-6 pm. However, the street is a heritage area though the town is not well known.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Onta Pottery Village, located about 15 km north of Hita, is a charming vintage village that offers a glimpse into traditional pottery making. The village is deeply connected to its natural surroundings, using river water to grind clay and wood from local shops for kiln fuel. Visitors can witness skilled potters at work in their workshops and explore the handmade pottery studios and shops.
In a walking distance from the village. Small in size but informative. Not to be missed.

It’s a unique experience, a small village in the middle of the mountains, all houses basically dedicated to the craft, you see then drying the products outside and the shops are inside their homes. Such a local feel, the price range is reasonable with some going cheaper and some more pricey. They got a small free local museum, all the stuff inside is in Japanese though but nice enough to look at. The parking lot by the museum isn’t the biggest, it was quite empty when I got there around 9:30 am but completely full when I left around 11 am. Guess it depends on season and weather but it doesn’t seem like there are any other parking spots around so I suggest arriving earlier if you’re driving :))
Helena W — Google review
We went on a rainy day so we only went to two shops, but the potteries are so nice, we bought some beautiful tea cups. The shops are unattended and you need to ring the bell if you want to buy. They are professional craftsmen busy working in the workshops, not professional customer service employees, so don't be a jerk going in.
M C — Google review
Am a potter hence wanted to visit this place to possibly make some ceramics or buy some unique pieces. However, there were probably only 4-5 shops that were opened, with many store owners being quite nonchalant and products were limited. Not as wide of a range as one would’ve expected. Interesting to still see how they pound the yellow clay using the force of the water. Love the cute (and only food store) soba and udon shop!

When art, tradition, and nature seamlessly fuse, the resulting uniqueness establishes an identity of its own. Originality can't be replicated nor transferred; it exclusively resides within the soul of the creator. This is what it is.

A village dedicated to pottery. Serene and tranquil, located in the middle of mountain and forest. Really nice walking in the village and admiring all the pottery items.

Caught bus from bus station worth doing for scenery and the really interesting story of the pottery village and how it’s made. Needless to say we purchased some pottery which is very reasonably priced.

Beautiful, quiet and a great range of high quality traditional pottery. Items are mostly 1000yen and up (each). If you know what you are interested in and need a beautiful addition to your tableware, you will find it here. Spend just under 10000yen on 5 items.

Karato Fish Market

Seafood market
Market
Karato Fish Market is a bustling hub with numerous vendors offering sashimi, sushi, and other prepared foods. What sets it apart from other fish markets in Japan is its abundance of fugu, also known as pufferfish. The market is heavily regulated for the preparation of fugu, requiring chefs to undergo extensive training before serving it. Located along Route 9, visitors can explore a wide variety of seafood at the market, including whale meat in nearby restaurants.
An unexpected lunch date to this fish market. If you love sushi, this is a place to go. So many stalls offering fresh sushi of different types. Some offer treys to let you pick and choose, while other do it for you and some specialize in a specific fish. We waited in one queue for about 10 minutes or so for the tuna specials. Mmmmm sooooo good! So hard to decide and it’s all in your face…LOVE IT! And if you’re worried that this market has the “fishy smell” don’t even. I was fine being in there and didn’t have that stink that many other markets in other Asian countries have. This is a more local touristy spot, which is great because you don’t have those big city crowds. I’d go back if I can! YUM!🍣🍱🐟🐠🍤🐡🎏

If you’re visiting Shimonoseki, Karato Market is definitely a must-see spot.
Fresh and delicious sushi is waiting for you inside. For those arriving by ferry, you can easily hop on a bus or taxi (or even walk, since it’s not too far). But if you’re driving, be prepared—parking can be a bit of a hassle, especially on sunny days when the wait time tends to get long. Most people enjoy their food in the open area right next to the market, but recently they’ve opened a dining space on the second floor. There’s a small fee (I believe it was about 300 yen per person), but on a hot day with nowhere to sit, it’s a very welcome option. Grab some tasty sushi, relax, and take in the view of the peaceful blue sea—you’ll really feel the charm of Shimonoseki!
기민주 — Google review
Karato Fish Market in Shimonoseki is a lively waterfront market famous for super-fresh seafood, especially blowfish (fugu). On weekends and holidays, stalls sell sushi, sashimi, and seafood bowls at affordable prices, making it popular with both locals and visitors. You can buy your food, then enjoy it outside while overlooking the Kanmon Strait. It’s a great spot to taste fresh Japanese seafood in a casual atmosphere.

🐟 Karato Fish Market (Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi) Review Karato Fish Market is one of the liveliest and most enjoyable seafood markets in western Japan. Located right by the sea in Shimonoseki, it offers visitors a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sights, sounds, and smells of fresh seafood. Every morning, local fishermen and vendors display an incredible variety of freshly caught fish and shellfish. The highlight for most visitors is the weekend sushi market, where dozens of stalls sell beautifully prepared sushi, sashimi, and seafood rice bowls at very reasonable prices. You can walk along the pier with a tray of fresh sushi while enjoying the sea breeze and view of the Kanmon Strait — a truly local experience. The market staff are friendly and energetic, happy to explain the different types of fish and preparation styles. There are also souvenir shops and small restaurants nearby where you can try blowfish (fugu), the specialty of Shimonoseki. The area around the market is clean, lively, and easy to explore. It’s best to visit in the morning (around 8–10 a.m.) when the selection is at its peak. Overall, Karato Fish Market is a must-visit for seafood lovers — a place where you can enjoy delicious, affordable sushi, learn about Japan’s fishing culture, and feel the authentic spirit of a coastal city.

If you’re visiting Mojiko, take the ferry across to Shimonoseki on Honshu, where you’ll find the famous Karato Fish Market—a popular spot among tourists. The market is especially known for selling sushi and is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You can buy sushi inside and then enjoy it outside at the many seating areas while taking in the ocean view. The market’s signature specialty is fugu (pufferfish), served as both sushi and sashimi. In fact, the pufferfish is even the symbol of the market. The sushi here is quite affordable, with plenty of vendors to choose from. The taste is pretty good too—not bad at all. The fugu, in particular, has a unique texture: it leaves a slight numbness on your tongue, but it’s delicious.
Busher P — Google review
We went crazy in this market. Great fresh sushi and sashimi with great value. This market is famous for puffer fish and whale. My first experience with whale sushi, it was wild. 22 pieces of sushi with toro, hamachi, eel, sardine, whale with a place of toro and a puffer fish sashimi for below ¥10,000. You can sit and eat by the sea.

This bustling fish market is located a few bus stops away from Shimonoseki station. It's a great place to try out the fresh seafood, which are available at affordable prices. Don't miss out the local specialties such as the fugu sashimi and fugu soup. 🐡

I spent last Sunday morning at this bustling fish market. There were huge crowds, but I spotted a stall with a massive queue, which is always a good sign! After waiting, I got an amazing haul—a ton of fresh, delicious sushi—all for under 3,000 yen. Seriously, what a bargain! When I come back to Kyushu, I'm going to make sure I stay close to the market on a weekend so I can enjoy that incredible seafood on back-to-back days.

Museums
The Kyushu Railway History Museum in Moji, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan is a must-visit for train enthusiasts and history buffs alike. It showcases a fascinating collection of steam engines, sleeping carriages, and an early electric train designed in 1942. Visitors can explore retired vehicles and even take a tour inside some of the old carriages. The museum also features a functioning miniature train track, driving simulation, and informative displays that cater to Japan's avid train following.
A must visit place when you're in mojiko, here you'll learn the history of kyushu trains then and now. As a JR pass user I always wonder why there are old trains and newer trains and all these are explained here. Some interesting exhibits are old tickets, old trains that re removed, tracks types

Good for children. Paid for ticket. The outdoor train simulator requires ¥300 for 2 people. The indoor train simulator is free but takes a long time for waiting, STRONGLY suggests reserving the indoor train simulator first.

Kyushu railway history museum is a nice museum to understand more about trains, although not a very big one. You can try the train simulator and play with the model train for ¥100. You can even take the mini train ride to become a train captain for ¥300 but could be close due to bad weather.

What amazed me is how much they can fit inside of the tiny park area. With the ¥300 yen ticket per adult you can check out historic trains from the last century parked in a row, a mini outdoor railway park, a diorama room showcasing all the N-gauge Shinkansen and other iconic express trains in Kyushu, a train simulator room, a library of real, ancient relics on train history in Kyushu and so on.

Great museum. Tons of artifacts. Great layout. Just wish things were translated into other languages for non-Japanese speakers. If they were, I would give this five stars.

my sons love trains so when they know there is a train museum in kyushu, they keep nagging to go here. quite nice, not too big like the one we went on another city but they still like it. there are several old trains on the train garage with each of their history. we can also go inside the museum which shows many old things related to trains. kids also can play train simulator by paying 100 yen only, but you need to get ticket reservation because most children would like to play this.
Lenny L — Google review
Boring, nothing to see here but a few trains that you cannot enter. Bunch of Japanese kids running around and shouting. Perhaps this is what hell looks like. Everything that seems fun is paywar. Save the 300 yen for a menchi katsu instead
Ting H — Google review
As a train fan this is the place I’ve been owing to go while in Kitakyushu. Adjacent to Mojiko Station there are old train carriages outdoors on display with three of them you can enter inside, as the interior is well preserved. The main building hosts a small 1900 carriage and an exhibition room upstairs with railway artifacts, station and destination signs and old photos. Though not as big as the one near Omiya it is great that there is one.

Mojiko Station, located in the city of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka prefecture, is a historic Neo-Renaissance train station that was originally built in 1891 and later updated in 1914. It stands on a square with a fountain and is one of the few remaining wooden stations in Japan. The station reflects Western influence with its Neo-Renaissance style appearance and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property.
Mojiko Station is a station on the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line in Moji Ward, Kitakyushu. The current station building is a wooden station building that was completed in 1914. It is a Neo-Renaissance style, symmetrical design, and is the first railway station building in Japan to be designated as an important cultural property, and is a representative tourist attraction in Mojiko.

Mojiko Station is beautiful—it really feels like stepping back in time. I actually visited twice in a row. The first time was during the Kanmon Festival, so it was extremely crowded. The second visit was the next day, and it was much quieter, which allowed me to enjoy the station more. I stopped by the information center (the staff there were very welcoming), and also visited the lost and found office next to the tracks—though that older building wasn’t as charming. Overall, I’m glad I came. It was a wonderful experience.
Kevin W — Google review
Mojiko is our first destination using the JR North Kyushu Pass this trip. Located in Kitakyushu, one can overlook Honshu from the port area. It's not a big place and it's not as crowded compared to Yufuin and the urban areas. We come here for the banana cuisines (beverages, snacks and incredibly banana baked curry) and the sea breeze. Many restaurants serving baked curry line up the streets along Mojiko Station. Head to the nearby observation tower for an unobstructed view. Before you reach, you will pass by a souvenir store for more banana goodies. The banana auction site, located a few metres out of the station was where bananas from Taiwan was auctioned off in the early 90s. There is another shopping arcade that encircled the port area, that's where most of the action is. Most of the attractions are located south of the station, making this an easy itinerary for a day trip.

Mojiko station is a small train station that has a lot of history. The fountains for example are relects from 1914 and are still working. The buildings around it also look like they were built a long time ago. There is a fountain in front of the station. Across the street is the Moji Port. We took a ferry to go to the Karato Fish Market and visit tbe attractions nearby. We used the same route going back to Hakata.

This station faces the Kyushu Railway Museum and is a historical station. (The station building was completed in 1914.) The history of the station dates back to 1891. There were no bridges or tunnels in the Kanmon Strait when it first opened, and this station served as the gateway to the railways of Kyushu. The station building is an important cultural property and is popular among Japanese railway enthusiasts.

Visited Mojiko Retro District on September 12, 2025. Even in mid-September it was still hot and humid, but the retro-style buildings, old port atmosphere, and relaxed vibe made it a very enjoyable stroll. That day there were several pop-up shops selling dog goods and many visitors with their pets—possibly a special “Dog Day”—which gave the town a cheerful and lively feel. We also enjoyed the shopping area, where visitors can eat local dishes, relax in cafés, and shop for souvenirs. The retro setting makes it a pleasant place to wander and take breaks. In the early evening, we went up to the 31st-floor Observation Room near the waterfront. For just ¥300, we got a stunning 270° panoramic view of the port, the Kanmon Strait, and Shimonoseki across the water. Seeing the scenery shift from daylight to dusk, as the town lights began to glow, was unforgettable. I recommend visiting in the afternoon through the evening so you can enjoy both the daytime stroll and the magical night view from above. Mojiko Retro is compact, walkable, and offers the perfect mix of history, culture, food, and scenery.

Assuming this is the geotag of the wharf area, this is the most lively location where tourists and local partake in souvenir buying and eating, if not for the yaki curry to the east of the station. Made in Japan products and handicrafts line the bay area and many take shelter from the rain indoors. Since you are here, just get the banana products like cakes and tarts. I managed to buy a stack of Tirolian for my students back home. Feedback was that it was delicious, as is all snacks.

There were disinfectant wet sheets on the table, and the table was properly sprayed and wiped clean, so hygiene was perfect. The Yakisomen was delicious. I also had soft serve ice cream. Nice Atmosphere, Good Food, Fast Service, Poor Location The road station has the usual local produce store, souvenir store, restaurant, and (popular with the Japanese) a stamp to collect and prove that one has visited. The restaurant has Japanese decor, tatami mat seating, large windows, fast polite service, a wide selection of foods with a full plastic food menu display case at the entrance for easy ordering (you can take a photo of the dish you want to eat, or even take the waitress out there). We had the mish-mash chanpon noodles with vegetables and seafood in pork bone broth, the children had deep friend tofu (inari) udon. Both tasted good and were not expensive. Soba (buckwheat noodles) seem to be a local speciality. There are also a few flavours of soft ice cream, including the purple sweet potato flavour sold from the kiosk at the entrance to the restaurant. My shtick or axe-to-grind is that the Japanese do not pay much attention to location, and panoramic views, being more interested in symbolic tourism, and visiting places where the symbols are. So while the windows of the restaurant were big and clear, which is in itself fairly rare, the location was chosen for centrality, and ease of access (particularly for the staff!), one presumes when, I would have preferred the road station to have been located on one of the hill side roadways such as near Shirayama Shrine or "Rest House Ama-bire" on the approach to Kikugawa from Ozuki Intersection on Route 491, where it would have provided a panoramic view of the Spa Town. Abu's Road Station is the only road station that I know that has a good view, but then it is of the Sea of Japan. Views are only provided when they are particularly beautiful. The Japanese want to see the particularly beautiful, the special and not the quotidian. I would have liked to have been able to look down on the home-centre and supermarket.

It is beautiful, but seems like it’s a long way to go for a snapshot. Plus, although pleasant, the beach entrance of ¥400pp plus ¥600 parking was steep(although showers were free). Few people seem to have been on to the island itself.

Motonosumi Shrine

Mentioned on
14 lists
Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Motonosumi Inari Shrine is a remote and picturesque shrine in Japan, featuring 123 vibrant red torii gates along a winding clifftop path. It stands out from other Inari shrines as it uses unique characters for its name. Established in 1955, the shrine is believed to grant various blessings such as prosperity in business, maritime safety, luck in love and marriage, and protection from misfortune.
Highly recommend to rent a car as this is in a very remote location. Our drive through google map took us through very skinny roads but that’s part of the adventure. This shrine has been around since 1987 with 123 Tori gates. If you are a photographer, it’s definitely a fun to photograph these gates. You want to double check on the weather to get the best view. It’s a very beautiful shrine! I believe this shrine is in the ‘Top 30 Shrines & Temples I’m glad to have visited’ list from the TripAdvisor. It definitely is worth the hype. Don’t forget to walk through all of the gates as it is supposed to bring luck. At the top, there is an offertory box where you throw in a coin for a good luck.
J ( — Google review
Motonosumi Inari Shrine was the final stop on our Klook tour, and to be honest, I was starting to get a bit impatient on the way there—the ride from Karato Market took about 1.5 hours. Since we were on a smaller coaster bus navigating narrow roads, it felt more prone to motion sickness. But once we arrived—especially when we reached the actual shrine—it was absolutely worth it. The walk through the rows of torii gates, with the sound of waves crashing nearby and the view of the sea, was nothing short of mesmerizing. There’s something really calming and powerful about the place that photos just can’t fully capture. The area itself is quite simple: a small souvenir shop, a little ice cream stand, and a public restroom with limited cubicles—so don’t expect a lot of amenities. There’s a shortcut going back up: once you reach the shrine at the bottom, look for a small path with a few steps leading to a viewing deck. From there, it's mostly flat terrain back to the area near the shops—no need to climb back up the original stairs. The return trip to the city took around 3.5 hours, as Japan requires rest stops on long drives (there's a mandatory break every 2 hours or so), so factor that into your schedule. If you have the time, I highly recommend visiting via a Klook tour or similar option like hiring a private vehicle - the area is remote, and there’s no direct public transportation
Tita P — Google review
Beautiful place. There are many other things to do other than the Torii shrine. When you get to the end of the walk through the gates there is a lot of beautiful spots to take photos with the Sea of Japan in the background. You do have to pay for parking with yen, there are also lots of places to make wishes so bring your coins!
Nevaeh T — Google review
When the weather is nice, the color of sea surface is a vibrant blue, and paired with brightly colored red birdhouses, it's beautiful! But since there are many stairs, older visitors should pay attention to the safety of their feet when visiting here.

⛩️ Motonosumi Shrine (Nagato, Yamaguchi) Review Motonosumi Shrine is one of the most breathtaking and photogenic spots in Japan. Located in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, it’s famous for its 123 bright red torii gates that stretch dramatically along the hillside toward the blue sea. The contrast between the vivid vermilion gates, the lush greenery, and the deep ocean creates an unforgettable view — it’s no surprise this site has been featured in many travel magazines as one of Japan’s most scenic shrines. The path of torii gates leads you down toward the cliffs, where you can feel the ocean wind and hear the sound of waves crashing below. It’s a peaceful yet powerful place that perfectly captures Japan’s harmony between nature and spirituality. One of the fun traditions here is the offering box located high above the main torii gate — visitors try to toss coins into it for good luck. It adds a playful, unique touch to the visit. The surrounding area is also worth exploring: there are small cafés, souvenir stands, and observation points with panoramic views of the coastline. The shrine staff and locals are welcoming, and the whole area is clean and well maintained. Whether you’re interested in photography, Japanese culture, or simply beautiful seaside landscapes, Motonosumi Shrine is an absolute must-visit. It’s a place that leaves you with both serenity and awe — a perfect blend of natural beauty and sacred tradition.

Was here in 2006. The scenery is still as beautiful as my memory. The sea, mountains, padi fields, the windmill and the garden maze are just so picturesque. Picnic tables plenty if not the inviting grassy grounds will also do. Heard from the the keepers that when the fog could be so thick that it is only 2m visibility.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Beppu Benten Pond is a stunning natural gem that captivates visitors with its serene beauty. This shallow pool boasts crystal-clear, blue-green waters enriched with calcium, creating an enchanting emerald hue. Surrounded by lush trees and charming stone bridges, it offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
" Emerald Green + Clean Clean Water " Beppu Benten Pond — a sacred blue gem near Akiyoshidai. When visiting Akiyoshidai, this spot is always recommended alongside it—and for good reason. The water is unbelievably clear, with a emerald green that looks surreal even without any filter. It’s no surprise that it’s been selected as one of Japan’s “Top 100 Famous Waters,” with a spring so pure, you can actually drink straight from it. Personally, whenever I visit Akiyoshidai, I make it a point to stop by Beppu Benten Pond as well. It’s a moment of quiet, sacred serenity—where I can sit with the stillness, take in the green/blue tranquility, and enjoy a cup of unbelievably clean, delicious spring water before heading home.

A cobalt blue pond, fresh trout, and limestone caves nearby to explore. Super pristine and clear water. You can see clearly to the pond's bottom, as though it were made of perfectly clear glass. Its waters are used for irrigation and drinking, and also for the nearby trout farm. There is a trout farm just next to the pond. I guest the house is the trout farm’s owner.

Went on a weekday afternoon, and we had the place all to ourselves. Very nice and serene place. Sat by the pond for a few minutes and took pictures. Worth the extra 15min drive from Akiyoshido Cave if you have the time to spare. Bring bug spray!

This was a fun and unique experience. From the constant cool breeze that reminds you that you're not in Tokyo any more, to the crystal clear fresh spring water, which was very cold, to the beautifully taken care of fish farm. For a small fee you can rent a fishing pole, bait and catch the fish in the main pond. The best part, you can take it to the small restaurant and they will clean, prep and cook your catch. Now...the sunrise at the kids playground on the other hand...
Sharaz H — Google review
Bring bottles of your own or buy their souvenir bottles at the gift shop for about $300 yen/bottle. The water is pure enough to drink straight out of it.

Akiyoshido Cave

Mentioned on

Akiyoshido Cave, nestled in Mine City, is a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors with its illuminated chambers adorned with stunning limestone stalactites and stalagmites. As the largest karst cave in Japan, it boasts impressive 80-meter-high ceilings and stretches an astonishing 10 kilometers underground.
Akiyoshido Cave is located in the country of Japan and its very peaceful. There wasn’t too many tourists, which made the trip relaxing and enjoyable. The cave is the largest limestone cove in Japan. As I explored the cave, I saw stalactites everywhere and if the water drops on your head, supposedly it’s a sign of a good luck. You should probably wear a jacket since the cave does get a little chilly. If you have young kids, this might not be a place to go unless you intend on carrying them by hand. It’s not really stroller friendly but they do have elevators. After walking through the cave, I went to the observation deck to see the 300 million years old limestone plateau. This was my favorite part!! Go in the spring-fall time frame to see the luscious scenery of greens. This was probably one of the neatest thing I’ve seen in my life.
J ( — Google review
An unforgettable experience! Akiyoshidō Cave is huge, beautifully lit, and easy to walk through — perfect for all ages. The atmosphere is peaceful and cool (about 17°C year-round), making it a great place to visit even in the summer. The cave is full of amazing natural features like underground waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and unique rock formations. The “100 Plates” (Hyakumai-zara) were especially stunning. It’s not too dark or claustrophobic, and the walking path is very well maintained with handrails and lights. You can walk the whole main route in about an hour, and there’s even an elevator that takes you up to the Akiyoshidai Plateau above if you want to explore more. The entrance fee is reasonable (around ¥1,200), and definitely worth it. It’s not super touristy, which makes it feel even more special. Just wear comfortable shoes — some spots are a little slippery. Highly recommended if you’re in Yamaguchi Prefecture!
Nevaeh T — Google review
I first visited the Akiyoshidai Observatory and then parked at the nearby elevator parking lot to explore Akiyoshi Cave. The day was a bit humid, but inside the cave it was cool and refreshing, and I had a great time. I had seen many photos of the impressive cave entrance before, but the inside was just as mysterious and stunning. It may go without saying, but since there are no restrooms inside the cave, it’s probably better not to drink too much water before entering. From the observatory to the cave, the whole experience was wonderful — truly something Yamaguchi can be proud of.
기민주 — Google review

An amazing experience for everyone that love exploring the beauty of what lies beneath. The cave lightening and ambiance are done perfectly to enhance your experience while exploring this marvel of nature. The newly finished mural is a wonderful in itself. A must visit.
Sharaz H — Google review
I highly recommend against visiting this cave, the entire area is just a tourist trap and when you get into the cave, not only the ticket price is expensive, you need to pay more if you want to go into a special "adventure" path, the cave is bland at best and I wouldn't even put it in the top 10 caves I visited. My verdict: really not worth it
Richard S — Google review
It’s a must visit limestone cave when you are in Mini City in Yamaguchi, especially during summer. The beautiful and clean cave temperature is about 17 degree. The walkway is all nicely and carefully paved with safety and comfort in consideration. Entrance fee is JPY1300 per person for 1 hour walk. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes. There are 2 types of walks, the up course and down course walk. We took the down course walk and completed in about 45 mins. Up course requires a fee of JPY300. We love the walk. The cave is dimly lit to give a feel of darkness in the cave but not too dim so you can see the steps and surroundings. We enjoyed the walk very much and wouldn’t mind coming again if we happen to be Yamaguchi.
SY — Google review
I went there on a rainy day. Took the bus from shin-yamaguchi to the cave, it was really easy to get there! The Cave was really really beautiful the guide in english really interesting and you can re-enter the cave if you take the elevator to the observation deck and want to go back in. Just show the ticket again. I think it war okay didnt need a jacket had t-shirt and a long sleeve shirt on (took the long sleeve off later) the cave had a temperature of 17 °C. For me it was worth it!

been here today. the view is another level of gorgeousness yet the facilities are insufficient. neither food store nor staffs are available along the karst road so no one we can ask in case we meet trouble during our trip, especially if we are cycling. and the cave staff said that bringing food are not allowed. even at the camping ground you will not meet any foodstore or restaurant or cafe whatsoever. even if you stay at the camping ground food are not sold except you have reserved the previous day. i think this place has huge potential but unfortunately they have poor management.

The Ruriko-ji Five Story Pagoda is a serene and picturesque Buddhist temple located in a landscaped park. This popular spot offers breathtaking views of cherry blossoms and fall foliage. Visitors can explore the pagoda and temple, both of which are free to enter. There is also a peaceful koi fish and turtle pond on the premises. However, visitors must take care to be respectful as there is also a cemetery onsite.
No matter how many times I visit, this pagoda takes my breath away! It’s so pretty throughout the year. There are plum blossom trees, cherry blossom trees, and hydrangea on the grounds for people to enjoy. It’s also nice place to enjoy fall foliage. There are usually some volunteer guides on the grounds also. They are so nice and helpful. Lots of parking available, but they do get very busy during certain times of the year if you go on the weekend. If you’re hungry while you are here, there is a cafe that serves the roof tile noodles nearby. It’s next to the large gift shop that is located next to the parking lot. The grounds are wheelchair and stroller friendly. There is no fee to enter and view the pagoda.

Go up around the Back! This is a beautiful pagoda that creates in its viewers a little bit of a Zen (or if you prefer, God's glory) experience. Why is this? Why do visitors say that it takes their breath away. My interpretation is that it looks like a lot of houses or temples stacked one on top of another. We are used to seeing the temple roof shape of each story of the pagoda. In the grounds of the temple there are similar roofs, of other similar temple structures but these are arranged horizontally with at most a slight vertical misalignment due to the temple structures and their roofs being built on a slope, which with the admixture of perspective, allows us to see when we view a temple complex or townscape a cascade of roofs stretching off into the distance. And so it is when we view this pagoda our brains attempt to interpret its form in the same familiar way, as smaller and smaller, more distant roofs, on the side of the mountain, but then, whammy, it is not perspective, it is not a slope, these roofs are stacked. And in that whattheblazes moment of reappraisal, our analytical mind is stumped, stopped and dumbfounded, and we are given a glimpse of that which a Zen scholar calls "the purity of experience" or perhaps, in Christian parlance, we see the light. In any event it is a very beautiful pagoda. It contains a library of books that no one reads. And those in the know can go up around the back to stand at eye level with the middle of the pagoda and look down upon the temple sharing the same grounds. Please see the photo. 案内すると感心してもらえますよ。

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is a historic site, established in 904 and dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of academics. It is renowned for its seasonal plum blossoms and traditional festivals. Many visitors come to pray for success in academics and passing entrance exams. The shrine offers a beautiful view of Hofu City and has parking lots nearby.
Those who love historical momentum and look for peace in mind; should try this auspicious place. I recommend the late afternoon to dusk is the best time for visiting. We can enjoy sunset from top and can have a birds eye view of the city at valley. Last but not the least, the ray of the setting sun creates a dramatic climax, which offers an ample opportunity for cinematic photography...

A place with lots of Scenic Beauty. We visited during Autumn season and enjoyed the color of Nature. There is a Museum named Mori Museum but having shortage of time we just visited the garden only. Entry Fee: Mori Garden: 400 yen Mori Museum: 1000 Yen But if you bye both it will cost for 1200 Yen. A very beautiful place to visit at Hofu City.

We had one hour to go around the huge house so our visit was brief. But it was interesting to see the lord's residence. A lot of history but puzzled there was no English guidebook or information. If printing on paper is not eco, perhaps they can resort to e-book information attached to the house.

One of the best gardens in Yamaguchi. I’ll take this over Shukkeien in Hiroshima any day. Large sprawling grounds with massive tōrō (stone lanterns) and scenic paths that are great for exploring. Every scene is impressive. Parking is a short distance from the entrance and well marked with vending machines and a bathroom. Don’t park in the gravel next to the first gate as that’s a buss turn-around easement. The entrance to the garden is through the first gate and a short uphill walk on the path to the right.

The maple trees are almost at full color now. The place is not so big but there are quite some good areas to relax and take some photos.

Great place to visit although a bit far to go on foot. Visit the teahouse in the area & order a matcha set.

Hagi Castle Town

Sights & Landmarks
Hagi Castle Town is a beautifully preserved heritage district in Japan, known for its Meiji-era houses that were once home to merchants. The area offers a glimpse into the past with former samurai residences and merchant houses lining the quiet streets. Established as a castle town in 1604, Hagi flourished under Mori Terumoto's rule and remains one of Japan's most historic cities.
Historical houses are giving this little town an idyllic ambience which invites you to stroll around and explore this place. Lots of pottery in nice historic buildings add even more charm.

A very tranquil ancient town perfect for leisurely walks and admiring the marks left by old times. We happened to encounter a beautiful sunset on the day we went there, with orange clouds filling the entire sky, making these alleyways even more tranquil and elegant... I hope to visit here again next time and stay a bit longer to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

A town that is absolutely worth a visit if you are interested in the Japanese culture and history. It is actually a museum in real life.
Jeff H — Google review
Great it shows the culture and ethics of Japan
DIAMOND — Google review
It has a unique atmosphere but it's a wide area with mostly residential houses so there is very little to do. Easier to explore by bicycle than on foot probably.
P — Google review
Very beautiful and a lot of interesting history to learn.
Spectral C — Google review
Not worth a visit. Compare with other "Old town" with tea houses and snack shops. Absolutely waste of my time.

A sleepy quiet castle town. Not much to see but the atmosphere is great.

Shokasonjuku Academy

Sights & Landmarks
Shokasonjuku Academy in the quiet town of Hagi is a historical school that played a significant role in the modernization of Japan. It was founded by Yoshida Shoin, a teacher and traveler whose students included influential figures of Meiji-era Japan. Visiting this site allows you to explore the homes and classrooms of key individuals like Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first Prime Minister.
Yoshida Shoin led a wonderfully romantic life as a.teacher and traveler, and his students included some of modern Japan's Meiji creators, men who weren't afraid to take action during life and death times. In this sleepy little town of Hagi you can visit the homes and classrooms of all involved, including the house of Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first Prime Minister.

It was a part visiting Hagi city organised by JICA... The holy place is the part of world heritage... A place of building National Leaders... A factory of Human Resources in Japan... If you interested to learn about modernization of Japan, I would recommend you to visit this place...

A wonderful small museum where you get to understand who Shoin was, and enjoy his wisdom which ultimately led to his execution.
Coco S — Google review
Need a background historical story to understand its value, if not, it is just a Japanese traditional old house.

Shoin Shrine

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled east of the vibrant Abu River, Shoin Shrine stands as a tribute to Yoshida Shoin, a pivotal figure in Japan's history and a catalyst for the Meiji Restoration. This Shinto shrine not only honors his legacy as a samurai, scholar, and activist but also features several buildings that reflect his influence on Hagi’s cultural landscape.
Modern shrine but interesting old buildings and displays about a significant historical figure.

Nice tempo. I went there in the morning and there was no one there.

Like any kind of shrine.

Not reflect enough Shoin Yoshida value. Just use it for tourism. Better to rebuild it to make it worth more.

Nestled in the heart of Tokuyama, Tokuyama Zoo is a charming destination that offers visitors a delightful glimpse into the animal kingdom. While it has seen better days, this zoo is on a journey of revitalization, showcasing an array of fascinating creatures such as elephants, hippos, and the adorable red pandas. Families will find joy in its intimate setting where kids can get up close to tigers and lions—an experience that leaves lasting memories.
Loved this little zoo! It was only ¥600 to get in and only took about an hour walking around. We went in Jan 2025 and they were doing construction so we didn’t get to see the giraffes but all the other animals were cool! It reminded me of the movie Madagascar. Set up in a large circle. LOTS of monkeys! I should have taken more photos but the tortoise was cool.

This is a great little zoo in north Shunan City. They have a fair variety of animals to see. Some of the exhibits are quite old, but they are in the midst of renovations, and I am excited to see what the zoo will look like when it is all ready. The red pandas building and bird area is beautiful. We even saw some nesting birds and their eggs! There is a food court available as well as restrooms. The building with the red pandas also has a small reading nook with kids books. For an extra fee kids can have the opportunity to feed the penguins.

One of the best hanami place. However, the animals were rather ordinary. We were expecting more hands-on experience and a bit disappointed not getting to see the polar bear. The hippo's house was so small and hope that the renovation will make great ease to the lonely hippo.

Love this place, the last time I was here was three years ago. The monkeys are my favorite, specifically Shudarou and the other monkeys on monkey mountain. You should visit this place if you have the time, great place for families also.

Small zoo with a few very old animal habitats. It looks like they are in the process of modernizing. The plus side is you get very close to the animals. The downside is the tiny habitats are pretty sad. The price is right though: ¥600 for adults and ¥300 for kids.
Stephen B — Google review
It's a nice zoo for kids I would say. The small size of the zoo makes it hard for me as an adult to look at the animals because some of them look like they're going to go mad all cramped up. Fortunately, it appears the zoo is expanding a bit and renovating. There's a place to eat, a place for some interactive fun with animals and a photo machine that's zoo themed. Staff were friendly and helpful. Zoo is walkable from the station but there's also a cheap bus service.
Mary H — Google review
Animals in smaller cages then the main enclosure and a lot of construction work but not for the animals. That’s the point of the zoo I believe is to see the happy animals.
Christian F — Google review
Most depressing zoo I’ve ever been to. Almost all the animals need to see a vet. Birds feathers aren’t growing, bears are missing teeth, there’s a cage where you throw food at monkeys, all the cages are to small and the water is dirty
