Former Den'emon Ito Residence is a historical landmark showcasing both Japanese and European architectural features. It once belonged to the industrialist Ito Denemon and is located on the island of Kyushu. The estate holds a prominent place among merchant residences in the area, with an entry fee of 310 yen providing access to English information about its history.
Probably the most impressive merchant residence on the island of Kyushu. Costs 310 yen to enter and has good English information as well.

Felt like some of the displays are not related to the house. However the garden was so beautiful and the house looked amazing from there.
Hideki Y — Google review
I came for the Hina doll festival which is from February-March. Beautiful displays of Hina dolls. There wasn't too much English so i couldn't follow the history of the house that much but it is a beautiful estate. There is a parking lot right in front for 300 yen

The place is huge and beautiful. It holds a deep history and the collection inside is just beyond words. Difficult to get there but worth the time.

Such an unusual property to visit, a very large villa from the Meiji era with some western style rooms and superb tatami areas. Second floor room with super view of an elaborate stroll garden. Exciting displays of dolls, possibly purchased on extensive world tour. Temporary exhibition of prints about coal mining locally ( well, what else do you think paid for all this luxury)

Nestled in the serene mountains of Saga Prefecture, Japan, Kiyomizu Waterfall stands at an impressive height of 75 meters and spans 13 meters wide. This enchanting waterfall is a haven for nature enthusiasts seeking tranquility amidst lush greenery.
A picturesque walk to the waterfall with lots of greenery and the sound of trickling waters. Nice to be able to walk right up to the waterfall basin and have a photo shoot. If the waterfall basin is larger it would have been perfect. We also visited a mystical Buddhist temple next door - Hochiin 宝地院.
Shirley N — Google review
Magnificent waterfall with little visitors on a Spring weekday. One can relax at the pavilion with one's face brushed by occasional breeze while listening to the noise of falling water and rhythm of the wind chimes installed around the pavilion.
Brown C — Google review
There are two parking spots close by one is a little bit closer but smaller and only has space for a handful of cars. We parked in the bigger parking lot and walked uphill for maybe 200m before we got to the gate that leads into a forest area with a beautiful bridge and the stairs to the temple. This is route 1 and leads to the temple first before continuing to the waterdall. The stairs are somewhat uneven so you have to pay attention when climbing up to the temple. Same goes for the stairs that lead down from the temple to the waterfall. The second route is not as steep and in way better shape. It seems to be a little easier and more people used it. The waterfall itself was very beautiful and children were playing in the refreshing water. It was perfect for a hot day!
Dot S — Google review
Greeny and cool environment.there have two ways to reach to the waterfall.one is through the temple by climbing the stairs which is very hard but surrounding by the nature.other way is very easy to find, lookup the sign boards on your way to the parking.

Lovely place to visit for a walk in nature and a temple visit after with many sculptures. Parking available nearby.
Desmond C — Google review
Gorgeous waterfall, with a peaceful environment. I came in December and got to see all the red and yellow leaves falling on a beautiful clear day.
Kris H — Google review
It's a beautiful waterfall roughly 150m or 300m from the road depending on the route taken. There are free parking lots and restaurants on site.
Shenike W — Google review
There are 2 ways to go to the waterfalls, 1 is through the temple, which I don’t suggest older people do, we had to climb so many stairs! My asthmatic self was wheezing throughout! But the temple above had a calming serenity because of how untouched and run down it was, and looking at all the Gods placed everywhere even made it breathtaking! 2nd way of accessing it is the one that leads you right where the waterfall lands, easy access! The area around the waterfall looks completely hidden, like it’s a town’s secret! So no tourist info or signs in English.

Kichijôji

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Kichijôji is a serene Buddhist temple and praying space that welcomes visitors to admire its natural beauty throughout the seasons. From the breathtaking Sakura, Wisteria, and Hydrangea flowers to the vibrant hues of maple leaves, there's always something stunning to behold. The temple hosts an enchanting wisteria festival during Golden Week, showcasing this beautiful flower in all its glory. Nearby, a park beckons with a sightseeing tower and open spaces for leisurely strolls.
Breathtaking temple with beautiful wisteria flowers. It gets very crowded on the weekends when the wisterias are in bloom so I HIGHLY SUGGEST you go early in the morning during a weekday. The Buddha statues they have on the temple grounds had very beautiful faces that I couldn't take my eyes off of. The senbei(Japanese crakers)they sell are also very tasty and would recommend as a omiyage (they tasted like giant fortune cookies 🤤). The wisteria flavored soft serve ice cream was very popular as well. The family who runs the temple were also very nice. It has been a while since I have felt such kindness in Kyushu. You can tell they take good care of their temple.

This is a temple and praying space for Buddhist. People are free to enter but please respect the holy area. Nice area for enjoying nature according to the seasons: from Sakura, Wisteria, and Hydrangea flowers to the changing color of maple leaves. They usually have wisteria festival since wisteria during the Golden Week. Wisteria is probably the most known flowers here. There is a park nearby, offers a sightseeing tower and an open space. The park is worth to visit. Public toilet is available in the temple area. Plenty of parking area, however note that during the peak season it won't be available. Public transports are available, within around 5 minutes walk using bus from Kurosaki or Orio station cost around 400 jpy, or by taxi which cost higher around 3000 jpy.

(Translated by Google) To access from JR Kurosaki Station, take the Nishitetsu bus number 40 or 75 on the 1st floor of the Kurosaki Bus Center next door, get off at "Meijicho Danchi" and walk for 5-6 minutes. There is a toilet. However, there is no toilet paper, so either bring flushable type or purchase it at the store for 20 yen. The grounds are large and located on a hilly area, including the adjacent Kichijoji Park (with an observation deck), so there are mainly stepped promenades and stone steps. If you want to take your time and admire the wisteria trellis in front of the main hall, be sure to prepare your feet properly. Birthplace Mountain Kichijoji (Tanjosan Kichijoji, commonly known as Kichijoji). The birthplace of Chinzei Shonin, the second founder of the Jodo sect. The principal image is a wooden seated statue of Amida Nyorai. It is famous as ``Mida of the Belly Belt,'' and the votive tablets used to pray for safe childbirth are prominent. The only time you can directly worship the Gohonzon is during the Gokaicho memorial service, and it is usually kept hidden. On the grounds, there are statues of Nio, Kissho Kannon, Raigo Mida Sanzonbutsu (Kannon Bodhisattva, Amida Nyorai, Seishi Bodhisattva), and statues of Enma. Nagging, a must-see. The bluish rocks from Shikoku are also amazing. In front of the main hall and in front of the Enma-do hall, a pulley device called ``Dainenju'' is hung. When I slowly pull the prayer beads down while reciting Namu Amida Butsu, the wooden beads collide and snap! Crackling! Quite a sound. Ah, this is what I heard earlier. I want to get rid of my earthly desires and try to get along in a bright and honest manner. It's a temple where you can enjoy the beauty of flowers and trees throughout the four seasons, but when you think of Kichijoji, it's definitely the wisteria flowers! The best time to see Noda Fuji, which is said to be over 160 to 170 years old, is from mid-April to late April. Several types of wisteria have been planted, and their blooming times are slightly different. I hear many people say that they thought they missed the best time to see the flowers this year, but they were relieved that the late-blooming varieties were blooming. The Wisteria Festival is held from April 27th to 29th every year, which is the peak season. Stalls are lined up and Kichijo Taiko is performed. Admission is free, but wisteria requires time and money to prune and maintain. I would like to pay more than 100 yen out of gratitude. It's also a good idea to buy Buddha lottery tickets, lucky charms, and sweets. This is the season when the famous 400 yen soft serve ice cream flavored with wisteria flowers becomes delicious. Take a slightly sweet wisteria rice cracker (sold separately for 110 yen per bag of 2 pieces, also available in boxes) as a souvenir. Please note that the parking lot is not available during the Kichijoji Wisteria Festival. There will be no temporary parking lots near the venue, so please use public transportation. Mitsuse Le Vert Farm Dongurimura Village, also known as "Acorn Village," is a great spot for family activities. The admission fee is very affordable, and there are plenty of animals to interact with, including the opportunity to pet them, feed them, and even take pony rides.
It is a good place to spend time with kids. The train is not found nowadays, but there are some animals to enjoy. Kids can feed ponies and goats with their own hands. There are vending machines for buying feed with 100 yen. You can ride big horses. There is also a small room for tiny animals like panda mice, guinea pigs, and hares. You can feed them, too. At the last, don't forget to wash the hands!

It's a nice place for family activities. There are plenty of animals you can pet, feed, sometimes get a ride. An admission fee is super inexpensive. Facilities are runnung down but there's no problem. We made chicken sausage, fed and petted animals, eat lunch at a restaurant, got a pony ride for my son, had a great time.

It seems the animals are well treated. They are all very friendly (except the horses but that's due to their natural character). Really cheap too! Also the 200 yen to enter the petting zoo area is worth it!

Garden
Nature & Parks
Mifuneyama Rakuen is a stunning Japanese garden located at the foot of Mt. Mifune in Saga prefecture, covering an expansive area of 500,000 square meters. Originally built as a villa for the feudal lord of Takeo area in 1845, it has since become open to the public and is renowned for its picturesque beauty. The garden features a teahouse and statues depicting the 500 disciples of Buddha, creating a serene and culturally rich atmosphere.
Awesome ticketed park to visit during Autumn Leaves Festival. Fall scenery is picturesque and Instagram picture perfect. Like taking a page out of a beautifully painted painting with rich and vibrant colours that entices your eyes & brain. Basically two routes to take one within half hour and another about 40 minutes. The later is much more beautiful with upward slope climb, while it would be quite challenging for elderly and young kids. There are tea house and restaurant location within the park if you fancy it. This is definitely a park to come to to spend 1-2hrs, with history of emperor’s favourite place he visit, wonderful vibrant red, yellow & green mixture that blow your mind away.

There are almost no reviews about the team labs part of this hotel. I’m here to change that. This destination was on my want to go ever since I went to TeamLabs PLANETS in Tokyo. We walked into the hotel and were blown away by the stunning art pieces. We enjoyed delicious complimentary welcome drinks under the lanterns. Then, we began to explore the art pieces in the ruined parts of the hotel. Many don’t understand that the ruined parts of the hotel are not under construction, they are remnants of an old onsen that was operational in the 60s and the 70s. It’s not under construction, it was internationally left to ruin. That’s why the teamlabs art pieces play with that, leaving an interesting vibe, new art pieces interacting with the old ruins. This made for an otherworldly, albeit beautiful vibe, reminiscent of a post apocalyptic kind of feeling. The onsen itself was spectacular. It was absolutely stunning, with fireplace rooms with snacks, multiple hot pools and cold plunge pools, and various steam rooms and saunas. You are missing out if you go. The architecture is Scandinavian inspired, with beautiful, big windows in an open garden. And finally, the teamlabs park itself: we went at night, and the details were stunning. I was transported to another world, where azalea bushes glowed like ocean waves, and where digital koi swam in a giant pond.
Stacy B — Google review
Mifuneyama Rakuen, a renowned 500,000-square-meter Japanese garden at the base of Mount Mifune in Takeo, Saga Prefecture, offers stunning seasonal vistas, including vibrant spring blooms and autumn foliage. However, the site’s appeal is tempered by evident maintenance shortcomings, such as unchecked overgrowth of creeping vines on mature trees and other unmanaged vegetation, which detract from its pristine aesthetic. Visitors are advised to plan accordingly, prioritizing peak seasons for optimal enjoyment.
J P — Google review
Pleasant garden grounds, featuring a quaint bit murky pond, plus a grand mountain face overseeing proceedings within the garden below. Team Lab collaboration currently on, but only seems to be at night, and even the day time exhibition in the bathhouse ruins was closed. There’s a significant walk to a sacred tree on the east side, with the forest path being pretty narrow and somewhat insecure in places, all to end in not very much.
Jason C — Google review
I had a great stay! Beware that if you book a room with a private hot spring, there is a chance you'll have to deal with bugs. Staff were really nice. Food was really good. The hot spring is amazing. Also, you can visit both the hot springs and teamlab for free if you're a hotel guest.
Ellen — Google review
We have been there by night. Very beatiful walk through the iluminated garden.
Arye S — Google review
This could be a 5 star attraction but, instead it is in dire need of maintenance and grounds keeping. Nature has a way of being amazing despite people's lack of attention. Plenty closed off areas, very little signage, electrical wires everywhere and a general appearance of untidiness. Considering they charge 600¥ per person and there were bus loads of people coming and going. They could at least do basic maintenance and clean up. It probably was a beautifully kept up park but sadly it has been let go to long. I hope they can clean it up before it is too late.
Xstreemfishing — Google review
A beautiful garden full of seasonal flowers. We visited during cherry blossom season, but before full bloom. I felt it really came alive at night with the illuminations. There is also a teamLab exhibition tucked in the hillside that connects with a hotel there. The art is beautiful and worth seeing if you enjoy other similar exhibitions. At first I was shocked that the building seemed so dirty, but it's supposed to be a Ruins exhibition. Also, it's on the smaller side, but I felt the price reflected that. Probably easiest access by car, but there was free parking. I would love to come back and see the azaleas in full bloom, the photos look beautiful.

Takeo city Library

Library
Museum
Takeo City Library is a popular tourist spot in Takeo City, known for its modern building and unique features. The library underwent a major renovation in 2013 and now houses a Tsutaya bookstore and even a Starbucks, making it stand out from traditional libraries. Visitors have described the space as more akin to a large bookstore rather than a typical public library. It has been recognized as one of the most beautiful libraries globally, featuring an iconic elongated curved bookshelf on the second floor.
The building is magnificent and the interior is comforting. You can order a Starbucks coffee plus cake, and then enjoy yourself in reading. The atmosphere here is warm and quiet, very Japanese style. If you stay in the city for a day or two, you can take a morning walk to here and the nearby shrine, and enjoy a great me-time here.
Chih-ming H — Google review
Strong recommend for those who love to read! This library combines with cafe, the design is new and it is open for public. I really love the children reading area which is located beside this library. The photo spot is good to have an overview of this library.

A key landmark at Takeo. Nice architecture with a main library and a kids library by the side. Night time is even better with lights on. 2nd floor and part of ground floor are library area. They do have cafe (Starbucks) and some books/magazines/souvenirs (Tsutaya) on the ground floor. There are only two spots in the library where you can take photos in order not to disturb others, so pls keep in mind.
Esther C — Google review
Very beautiful library. I visited during spring but the building a bit warm and heated. Worth to stop a few hours on the route to Nagasaki from Fukuoka. There is another cute kid library next door. Can visit nearby shrine.
Ai — Google review
I’ve never had a library on my to do list on any free weekend but the Takeo library found it’s way on there last month. First off, what really allured me into going there was air conditioning. Yep, if you haven’t spent a summer in Kyushu then you haven’t felt real heat and humidity…seriously worse than the swamps of Florida or the stickiness of Singapore. The kind of heat you just know is disrespecting you on purpose. Anywho, I wanted to do an indoor activity and this was the perfect place to lounge around for hours and look at books I can’t read because they’re in Nihongo, but the pictures were dope. But the library also speaks the universal language of coffee so enjoy some Starbucks, skim through the magazines while your sweaty shirt dries.
Alanglen49 — Google review
In 2013, Takeo City entrusted the operation to Culture Convenience Club (CCC), which operates Japan's largest franchise bookstore, Tsutaya. CCC's operational know-how, introduced in Korea through a book titled "Tsutaya, the Place Where Tastes Are Designed," has permeated Takeo Library. CCC President and CEO Muneaki Masuda is famous for transforming a bookstore that sells books into a comprehensive lifestyle shop that offers books and music and suggests lifestyles. He achieved great success by instilling "sensibility," which is often mentioned among the younger generation, into a bookstore. Like Tsutaya Bookstore, CCC increased the number of open bookshelves in Takeo Library and introduced a bookstore, cafe, etc. The operating hours have been extended from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the library is open 365 days a year so that people can use it at any time.
Platinum G — Google review
Shouldn’t say it is a library or book shop, it should be treat as an art space of books. Photo are only allowed in designated area to preserve quite environment for library user. Book shops and Starbucks are mix with the library itself. Fun experience.
Martin C — Google review
Saw this library in the list of most beautiful libraries in the world. I haven’t really been to any and this is the first one. Indeed it was beautiful. I don’t know though if it’s worth it to travel all the way just to see the library and eat/drink Starbucks. Ahaha. But what I did was also go to Takeo Onsen. That way, travelling to Takeo itself becomes a proper trip.

The station offers a variety of dining options, including quick in-and-out style restaurants for busy travelers and upscale sit-down restaurants on its 9th and 10th floors.
An amazing modernly designed station with has a good selection of shops, restaurants and department stores all in one convenient location. You could get lost for hours exploring and discovering new things to see, enjoy and buy. The Christmas market at night was amazing with incredible illumination, performances, fun food and amazing atmosphere with people having a great time. Overall I recommend exploring Hakata Station beyond using the trains as it offers so much in terms of shopping, food and fun activities like the Christmas market.

Based on a last visit in July 2025 Fukuoka's version of Shinjuku, Kyoto, or Nanba stations and by far the alpha station the entire metro area. In fact, at a glance the exterior is very similar to that of Kyoto station, particularly the tall facade of the west entrance. Super well integrated with retails, you can find anything in it. One of the metro lines runs to the airport, which is unusually close to the downtown, making it a convenient hub and starting point to explore the area.

I took the Shinkansen straight from Kyoto and arrived at Hakata Station which is the main gateway to Fukuoka and Kyushu. The layout here is surprisingly easy to read for such a major hub, with clear signs in multiple languages and a smooth connection process. What makes it even more convenient is that the station is directly linked to several metro lines, so within minutes I was already on my way to the Ritz-Carlton Fukuoka. It’s one of those stations that feels big but never overwhelming, striking the right balance between functionality and comfort.

Hakata Station (博多駅) is the largest and busiest railway terminal in Kyushu, located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. Serving as a major transportation hub, it connects travelers to various destinations across Japan via the San’yō and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, as well as local and regional train services .
Arif A — Google review
The Shinkansen emerges from the west like breath from the sea. Hakata Station hums with laughter, food stalls, and the perfume of ramen broth drifting through the air. Businessmen, families, and travelers share benches, their suitcases reflecting lantern light. Here begins the soft warmth of Kyūshū — a journey not of speed but of rediscovery. Tourist Tip: Final stop for San’yō Line. Transfer to Kyūshū Shinkansen and Fukuoka Metro. Visit Canal City, Tenjin, Kushida Shrine, and Nakasu Yatai for night food stalls. Try Hakata ramen with thin noodles and rich broth. Major gateway between Honshu and Kyūshū. Transfer to Fukuoka Metro, local JR lines, or airport buses.

Nice station, easy to find locker to save your luggage
Aniendhita A — Google review
The station serves as the main transportation hub in FUK. The 2 major metro lines run past this station, hence it’s easy to get around the city. It’s also the base for trains and shinkansens to move around Kyushu and beyond. Despite its size-large, it’s easy to navigate around as its good layout with proper signages makes life easy. I must say most 🇯🇵 major transit hubs are superbly planned, 👍🏻 if you tire of the station, just move out to linked shopping hubs around it. There are plenty of choices. You can practically spend a whole day in the station and its nearby vicinity. Plenty of places to eat and drink.

Stayed Hakata from Dec. 27-Jan.6 & pretty much in & out here plus dined few times in the basement food court. The lighting in front of the station is amazing & glorious. There are many department stores surrounding it. It’s indeed, a modern multifunctional station. Love it very much.

Kushida Shrine, located in Fukuoka city, is a significant urban site that holds the annual Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. The shrine is deeply cherished by locals and is known for blessing longevity and business prosperity. It features a distinctive architectural style and houses a crane bronze sculpture as well as a spiritual spring believed to prolong life when consumed.
Old and popular shrine around this area. Even for me, this was the first visit. The land is not big, but traditional gate, main shrine, etc, all buildings are well maintained and felt my spirit was cleared during the stay and pray here.. *For lucky charm area, photo shoot is not allowed, so please be careful the warnings. I'm pretty sure this visit won't disappoint you :) #tourist spot #shrine #tradition culture

This place feels like an isle of calm inside a bustling city, it amazes me how quiet it was in here! It feels like being taken back 300 years in time, the buildings were incredible and everyone I saw bowed to the shrines and was very respectful, contributing to the atmosphere. There were many small temples and even a pond with koi fish in it. So far my favourite place in all of Fukuoka!
Tobias — Google review
Let’s go visit some temples while in Fukuoka. This is just one of many and all that I visited were beautiful. I’m absolutely positive that I missed a bunch but at some point it gets overwhelming or just starts looking the same. Not being disrespectful but it’s a lot.

A must-visit spot in Fukuoka! Kushida Shrine is rich in history and culture, with a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful architecture. The decorative Yamakasa floats are stunning—even outside of festival season. Easy to access from Hakata Station, and perfect for a quick spiritual stop or a deeper cultural experience. Highly recommended for anyone exploring Hakata!
Yummy L — Google review
Nestled conveniently in the heart of Hakata, the Kushida Shrine is an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone exploring Fukuoka. As one of the city's oldest shrines, it offers a peaceful escape and a tangible connection to centuries of Japanese culture, all without costing a single yen. Stepping through the imposing wooden gate, you're immediately struck by the shrine's immaculate condition. The grounds are well-maintained and spotlessly clean, radiating an aura of respect and tranquility. Despite its central location near Gion Station (just a minute's walk from the metro), the atmosphere inside is remarkably peaceful and unhurried. Visiting on a weekend, I was pleasantly surprised to find it uncrowded, allowing for quiet contemplation and easy exploration. While the shrine complex isn't sprawling, its compact size feels intimate rather than limiting. The main hall and auxiliary buildings are beautiful examples of traditional Shinto architecture, featuring intricate woodwork, gleaming brass, and the distinctive thatched roof of the main hall. Every corner feels highly photogenic, from the majestic ancient gingko tree to the ornate lanterns and the vibrant sub-shrines dotting the grounds. Informative plaques provide fascinating insights, making it a great place to learn about the region's rich history and spiritual traditions.
Sorlo S — Google review
Kushida Shrine another free shrine and is one of Fukuoka’s larger and busiest shrines, bustling with visitors throughout the day. There’s plenty to see, from impressive architecture to traditional decorations, but be prepared for crowds that can make photography challenging. You can also buy fortune slips here—if your luck isn’t great, you can tie the slip to a designated tree to leave the bad fortune behind. A vibrant and lively spot that’s well worth a visit.

When visiting Fukuoka, make sure to experience the iconic Yatai food stalls. These wheeled stalls offer a unique opportunity to sample Fukuoka's street food and immerse yourself in the local culture. With only around seven or eight seats, you'll find yourself dining shoulder to shoulder with locals, creating an unforgettable cultural experience. The stalls are scattered throughout Fukuoka, but the ones in Nakasu are highly recommended.
Very traditional Japanese food stall. Good food and chill atmosphere
Ngoc T — Google review
There are a number of stalls lined up along the canal. They all serve similar foods, ranging from onden to yakitori and ramen. It’s fast paced eating in a crammed space. A unique experience but not necessarily the most enjoyable. Food is just alright for the price.
Daniel O — Google review
The Yatai experience was a bit overwhelming with so many stalls to choose from. We ended up picking one with a shorter line and quickly got seats. We ordered oden, grilled beef, and grilled mentaiko. We especially liked the grilled items—they were soft and tasty. We also had a glass of highball each. The atmosphere was fast-paced and quite cramped. Also it was quite expensive, total for this order was in It was $41sgd; more about the experience than enjoyment for us
Josephine C — Google review
The ambiance and food is good, but some stuffs like the drinks is kind of overpriced. Worth trying it for first time.
JMGAB — Google review
I think it is okay to try one of these food stalls if you are a tourist. Just once though. But the very good ones have super long lines and the so-so ones are tourist traps. Why tourist traps? While you wait (in the rain when we went) they take your order and after about 20 to 30 mins waiting (this one was one of the so-so ones) you get to sit down and the food arrives when we sit and they were all cold already. And you can only order once while you were standing on line. So you eat these cold items while you look for condiments that were all empty… bill comes when you about to leave and it is close to Yen 3000 for some yakitori sticks and a side dish of grilled asparagus and mushrooms. Skip these stalls unless you enjoy standing on a line and get cold food at the end. There are plenty of izakaya in Nakasu just a few feet away from these very expensive and inconvenient yatais.
Jung L — Google review
The place is always packed with people. It makes sense that the stalls want to accommodate as many people as possible. Hopefully, more space could be given to the stalls so that more people can enjoy the wonderful food.

I had a fun time eating outside watching the sun go down but it definitely felt touristy. I think everyone should try it once when they go to Fukuoka but it's a little over priced for the food that you get.

A stunningly beautiful and convenient underground walkthrough mall that connects to many shops and buildings in the area, especially when it's too hot, too cold, too windy or too sunny, this underground walkthrough mall helps in all weather conditions and situations with many fine details in the interior to be found. A great way to spend time looking around and a convenient way to get wherever you're going 😊👍

This underground mall is long stretching from Tenjin station (orange line) to Tenjin Minami station (green line). There are 2 major thoroughfare with shops lining both sides. So make sure you walk through both as there’s lots to see. Retail and fnb plentiful. There are many entry and exit points to surface in case you get phobia of being underground for so long 😉 there are also exits to various large shopping complexes like Daimaru etc. look out for a ladies restroom which is amazing and definitely not what u often see. It’s more like a powder room than a restroom with nice interior and decor. No such luck for men 😡 🤪

Very convenient underground mall with access to all the department stores nearby. You can quite literally spend an entire day here shopping, because it has all the shops you need. You can also get food here and some really delicious matcha. The bathrooms are clean and accessible. Highly recommend coming here to shop, but it does get crowded.

A wonderful spot to unwind and enjoy nature right in the heart of the city! 🌿☕🦆

Free to enter, the paths are clean, with nice views across the lake and a pleasant walkway through the middle. You’ll see dog walkers and locals relaxing throughout the day. Toilets are clean, Western style, and adequate. Easy to reach from Hakata Station by bus #9 — about 260 JPY per person.

We were visiting Hakata-Fukuoka on a cruise liner and decided to visit Ohori Park. We took a train to the park... a large man-made lake (pond) with bridges to a small central island. At one end is a Japanese Garden (200 yen entry per adult) which is well worth a visit. Toilets are available inside the gardens. Car parking also available.

Sights & Landmarks
Fukuoka Tower is a modern skyscraper in Fukuoka, Japan, offering an observation deck with panoramic views of the city and bay. It stands at a height of 234 meters, providing visitors with stunning vistas of the glittering city below. The tower also features dining options and a lounge for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenery.
It was a gloomy evening when we visited Fukuoka Tower around 6 p.m. There was no line at the ticket counter, and the entrance fee was ¥1,000 per person. We stayed for about 30 minutes because that’s all it really takes to enjoy the panoramic view of the city. Perhaps because it’s a major tourist spot, the admission feels a bit pricey for what it offers. It’s best to visit the tower later in the evening to see the city lights. Visited in late September 2025.
LA F — Google review
Comparing the place, the ticket price is high. Overhyped. I think the space is not enough for too many people. They should limit the number of people so that everyone can enjoy the place. There is no seating option, so it is difficult to stand for long periods of time and enjoy the view. If I had known this beforehand, I would not have gone because I have severe back pain. You can't even sit on the floor. There are some places to take pictures, but if you ask the staff there, they won't take pictures, you have to ask the person behind the line to take pictures. So it's better if you can go with your own group. Overall I don't like it.
Dil A — Google review
I know it’s a touristy spot but it’s something that you should go to see especially if it’s an nice cloud free day. I’d probably recommend going at night or during sunset because you’ll get the best views. If you go on a weekend I’d probably recommend you buy your tickets early to skip the line. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop and walk across the street to check out the other places.
Nathan O — Google review
Not the Tower's fault, we took a gamble on if the weather would hold out. The rain and clouds came about 10 minutes after we got to the top. Once the clouds hit, we couldn't see anything. It had a 6 stamp rally. Photos to take awesome foggy photos in 2 spots. There is a love locket and a pin ball machine to get your fortune! We still had a good time with what we had!
Yuuki A — Google review
Great spot for panoramic views of Fukuoka and Hakata Bay. Best time is around sunset — city lights look amazing. The tower area is clean, modern, and easy to reach. Not a long visit but worth it for the scenery and photos.

Video and photo taken with an iPhone 12, so it doesn’t do the view justice. Breathtaking sunset views of Fukuoka. Little to no waiting time. Glass windowed Elevator allows for views on the way up as well. The observation deck was spacious enough for everyone, not as crowded as Kyoto tower. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Fukuoka!
Justin Y — Google review
I went there at the end of july and it was a great experience, even though there was a lot of people there, it didn’t hinder me from getting good photos of the sunset of the sea. The surrounding beach environment is really picturesque at sunset.

The night view of Fukuoka is exceptionally impressive, with a relatively low number of visitors. I visited the location around 8pm on a weekday. There are staff members present who provide guidance and information about the building in Japanese. While purchasing tickets on-site is acceptable, it is recommended to reserve tickets online in advance to avoid queues.

This path offers a breathtaking view of the sunset extending from the shrine's approach, especially during winter and spring. Visitors can also enjoy beautiful scenery along the approach during daytime, weather permitting.
I really enjoyed this shrine. The complex was huge and even with tons of people it felt spacious. There is a hiking trail that's about 2km but along the trail there is another deity at the top of the mountain about 600m in. It was about 25 to 30 mins from the main trail in the shrine but lots of incline. Would go only if it hasn't rained for a few days but definitely worth the mental refresh once you've reach the top. Also straight shot to the ocean from the shrine. Around 20 min walk.

Worth the ride to see this beautiful place! Easy commute only 30+ mins to get to Fukuma from Hakata, and a quick mini bus (no.2 the blue line) ride. I walked back to the train station along the main road it only took 30-35 mins.

It is a spectacular shrine, and it is well decorated during this special summer event time. There are many nice shrines also around the main shrine for exploration, we can take photos freely and there is no entrance free. This is definitely a top shrine to be visited!

I was able to visit the shrine during its festival and received a commemorative goshuin. I also got to see the procession, and there were several snack booths as well. Great shrine that has one of the oldest shrine history in Japan. Three female deities are enshrined separately and two of them are in isolated islands but you can visit them virtually all in one location as they have two little shrine branches here in the back of the main building. Spiritual feeling there as walking there. It's free. Only the optional treasure museum requires the fee.

However, there are so many beautiful small shline and atmosphere is so clean! sometimes, pack tourist from south KOREA and CHINA are noisy. but after some ten minuits, they will go away with big busses. and when you have a good luck, you can find nice taxy driver and he/she takes you a miyadhidake shrine through special place! and it costs only 2,800 JPY inc tax and chips. (Translated by Google) A building that looks like Ryugu Castle suddenly appeared in the middle of Takeo Onsen. At that time, it was only open from 9am to 10am, so we went up to the second floor of the building and the guide showed us the four zodiac signs carved into the four corners of the ceiling, which you can't usually see. After listening to the guide's detailed explanation and thinking back to that era, we entered the ``Motoyu'', one of the historic baths on the grounds. By the way, for the bathing fee of 450 yen, you can see the zodiac signs mentioned earlier. As for the hot water, I was surprised! It's like soaking in extremely thick lotion, and I'm very satisfied! Your skin will become smooth. The bath has a retro design with a high ceiling, and the two large bathtubs are separated into lukewarm and hot water, but even the lukewarm water is usually hot. So the hot water was hot (lol), but it felt good. I was so impressed! I would like to come back and take a different bath next time (*^^*) (Original)

Niji No Matsubara Pine Grove

Mentioned on

Scenic spot
Outdoor Activities
Niji No Matsubara Pine Grove is a vast forest of Japanese black pine trees, spanning approximately 4 kilometers in length and 500 meters in width. Originally planted by the first Karatsu feudal lord, the trees form an arc along the sandy beach and blue sea, bending under the influence of cool sea breezes. The area provides a serene ambiance with thousands of pine trees scattered throughout, releasing a gentle aroma as you walk on fallen leaves.
Drove up. Relaxing and windy. Great views of the city. Definitely recommended. Plus even the parking is free too.
Charles T — Google review
I've ridden (bicycle and motorcycle), driven and walked through here and it's always nice. The road is narrow. If you're on a bicycle it can be a bit sketchy, lots of traffic, trucks and buses, but you can push on the sandy trail on the beach side of the road if it gets too hairy. 2023

Really cool place to take a walk. The trees are all slanted and it is amazing how they are all standing. The area is very large and you will multiple areas to park a car to enjoy this amazing pine grove. Plus, it is right next to the a very nice beach that is also worth a visit.

Beautiful, cool (temperature) and serene. Was a very memorable walk. There are also children's play areas scattered along the path, so great for kids to play and parents to relax. Due to the ground being covered by pine needles a lot of noise is absorbed. The road is less than 100m away from the path but the sound of cars driving by is very faint. If you're in the area, consider giving Karatsu Burger Matsubara Honten a try
Vernard Q — Google review
Lovely, quiet, beautiful place. Thousands of pine trees are all over the place. Not too many people and the area is huge. You are steping on fallen pine leaves, it is soft and it release a faint of pine fragrance. It is a very nice place for a short walk. I walked 3km from Karatsu Castle to Niji no Matsubara, then another 2km to JR 虹ノ松原駅.

Sakurai Futamigaura's Couple Stones, also known as 'couple rocks,' are a scenic spot featuring two large rocks connected by a Shinto rope. Located about 150m offshore from the Sakurai Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, these rocks are enshrined as a sacred place and represent the god of marriage. The male rock stands at 11.8 meters while the female rock is 11.
a good place to visit if you rent a hotel or resort near here. not highly recommended for those who stay in fukuoka center then making a trip here cause it quiet an effort to do so. check the weather on your phone with Itoshima location before you go to make sure you are on the sunset time. mine were 19:31 so i missed it
Hà D — Google review
The view here is beautiful, though there are long lines if you want to take photos. We visited as part of a day tour, which I think was the best choice since the location is quite far. Coming here on your own might be a bit challenging.
Exy — Google review
This spot is usually packed with visitors, making it tough to get a clear photo—whether of the scenery or yourself. I got “lucky” when a sudden downpour cleared the area. Everyone left, and I managed to capture a few shots amidst the heavy rain and strong wind.
YippeeKewl — Google review
A very quiet and scenic spot to be. The sea was beautiful, though it has just stopped raining when e arrived. There are 2 parking spots across the road, and the one with the gantry does have a toilet in case anyone is looking for one after a long drive. It was empty when we arrived at around 10am, but there were tourists started coming in by the time we left. So, I reckon it will be good to visit early.
Hun T — Google review
Beautiful when the weather plays along. Not terribly busy on a Sunday afternoon, but still quite a lineup to take that special photo. Nit worth the wait. Just take it from any other angle. IMHO, only worth a visit if you have a car or if you stay in the area. A day trip with public transportation would be a nightmare, if at all possible.
Cecil M — Google review
Beautiful place to visit. Just an hour away by bus and can also continue visiting other tourist spots in the city. I went to see the gate and Sakurai Shrine on my trip. Amazing! I have attached a timetable from Hakata Bus Terminal to Futamigaura, the first bus leaves at 8.48am (weekday). You can use IC card to pay, no need to reserve the ticket in advance. (It could get busy on the weekend.
Arak T — Google review
The torii located at the beach such a sight to behold. You can just stare at it while listening to waves as they crash on the rocky coast line of Itoshima. Very relaxing and a very good photo spot. Just a couple of minutes away from Hakata Station. Easily accessible by bus or a combination of train and bus. Got here at around 9am, and is not yet packed with tourists. There are two restaurants nearby where you can eat eel and fresh seafood bowls. Toilets and vending machines are available.

Really cool spot and it wasn't too busy in middle of October. Plenty of paid parking. See the time for the sunset and go 1 hour before to guarantee good shots.

Karatsu Castle

Mentioned on
43 lists
Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Karatsu Castle, a stunning historical landmark originally completed in 1607, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the rich heritage of Karatsu City. This magnificent structure was built using materials from the nearby Nagoya Castle and stands proudly on a hilltop overlooking the beautiful bay and open sea. Often referred to as Maizuru Castle, which translates to 'the castle of the dancing crane,' it gets its name from the nearby beach that resembles a crane with outstretched wings.
It's majestic! There are two ways to access the mountain top, elevator and stairs! The elevator costs 100 yen per adult! Stairs up to the top are more charming, and offer visitors a great view of the Karatsu bay! The gardens on different slabs of the mountain have plenty of spaces where children and youths can have rampaging! The basement on the mountain top is extremely beautiful! It costs 500 yen per adult to visit the castle! The top floor which was originally used as a watch post will certainly give the visitors a thrilling swing of wind! Watch your steps while on the top! It slightly slides downwards! Be extra careful while capturing pictures because a simple indifference may cause your precious phone or camera to go down! The parking space before the castle is not so expensive! Enjoy!!
Hasib — Google review
Small castle on top of a hill. There is an elevator to get to the castle ground (¥100/one way) but only stairs inside the castle. Interesting artefacts on display. Great view of Karatsu Bay and town from the top of the castle.
Angelo ( — Google review
Beautiful small castle. The elevator (200y pp) allows wheelchair access to castle's grounds but not indoors. The staff were super friendly and kind. The view to the ocean was picturesque. Cute cats are always a plus. 🐈 ♡
Hwon — Google review
Nicely renovated castle with an incredible view over Karatsu and the open sea from the top floor! Well worth the climb noting there is also an elevator. I sometime wonder why some Kyushu historical jewels are so much underrated by some famous green guides… Not only Kyushu offers a lot but people are so friendly and food simply too good 👍 Fresh , local and people are proud of their products.

Probably one of the coolest castles I have visited while circumnavigating japan, high on a hill surrounded by water, overlooking the beaches and the city. Soo cool
Only I — Google review
Must go place, very informative in the museum, nice scene on top floor (5th floor), but beware its windy when staying outdoor.
Raymond L — Google review
Beautiful grounds around the castle where you can have a leisurely walk and view the city. For an unrestricted 360-degree view of Karatsu, pay the entrance fee to access the observation deck. Note you can't use the new 500 yen coin, but staff are friendly and helped us to change to an older coin to pay the ticket from the machine.
A L — Google review
Pro: it's a beautiful castle that dominates the local landscape. It has amazing views. The 2 hr bus from Fukuoka was worth it just to see the view from the top deck of the castle. There's an incredible view of the sea and nearby islands on one side, and rivers and mountains on the other. The castle is beautiful from the outside, and the entrance was relatively cheap at ¥500. Also, the place is climate controlled. The exhibits have a decent range of pottery, swords, armour, and graphics depicting the region's history. Con: this is a rebuilt castle with a bad interior design, with the tiling looking like it's from a bathroom from the 1990s. There aren't many views until you get to the top deck , because they've remodelled the interior to be more of a museum. For the museum: There is almost no english, and the QR code you scan to read more about the castle asks you to download an app that currently isn't working ( at least on my phone which is a Google Pixel 8). They should just make the place bilingual with Japanese and English so it is easier for the majority of foreign tourists. If you don't care about history, this point won't bother you too much.

The Hikiyama Exhibition Hall in Karatsu showcases an impressive collection of enormous 19th-century floats featuring fish and dragons, which are used during the annual Kunchi festival. Located just a brief walk away from JR Karatsu Station beside the Karatsu Shrine, visitors can enjoy admiring the incredible design, colors and history of these magnificent floats. The admission fee is a reasonable 310 yen and includes viewing of a short documentary on the festival.
Interesting exhibit and information provided. There are 13 of the 14 "Hikiyama" , 3-wheel carts still existing from the 600 A.D period, one of which is on display at the Exhibition Hall, with a mechanical doll of the peach, "momo-taro" boy. Festival is on Sunday after the first Monday of October.

I was very disappointed that we couldn't get closer. They were hard to see from far away. Also they were behind glass, so taking pictures was also hard. Costs 310¥ to get in.
Beatrice T — Google review
I think it's neat and the admission fee isn't too high but why is it behind glass at a distance? Is it too hard to place stanchions? I've seen national treasures on display with less protection. Hopefully they can complete the maintenance of the main venue soon.

The floats were beautiful, and for those who'd like to learn more there are detailed descriptions on the upper floor, as well as a video showing the annual festival. Well worth the entey fare.

Nestled by the picturesque fishing port of Yobuko, the Yobuko Morning Market is a vibrant hub that showcases the region's rich marine bounty and agricultural delights. Spanning a lively 200-meter stretch, this bustling market operates daily from 7 am to noon and is celebrated as one of Japan's top three morning markets alongside Takayama and Wajima.
We got lucky since a lot of small shops were open and we could try very tasty skewers with tako and otate. Easy 30’ bus ride from Karatsu bus terminal using Showa line.

We visited on a Thursday around 10 am. It was drizzling on and off. The parking lot was more than half empty. There weren't too many shops serving hot food, but what we tried was delicious. The grilled scallops and abalone (topped with uni) were my favourites. Other seafood we tried were squid, octopus, and turban snails (sazae). While waiting for the grilled seafood, the shop owner gave us samples of their other goods - the dried sardines had a good chew and were not too sweet. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and not having to wade through a crowd, unlike fish markets in the big cities.

Yobuko Morning Market We visited here in the late morning. Many stores not opened or it already closed due to the time. Recommend menus are fried squid and grilled abalones. In the market has cafe and craft beer as well. The atmosphere the day we visited was nice and not too hot, so we enjoy the street food very much.
Panisara — Google review
Arrived just 15 minutes before closing, so the visit was a bit rushed. Still managed to sample a variety of seafood: bbq oysters, turban snails, hotate, cold marinated squid, and dried squid. So much squid—I love it! Prices were slightly higher than expected but still reasonable.

Squid mecca of Kyushu! My husband lurrrrrves squid to the max, so we went at 730AM only to find out that the restaurant he wanted to eat at opened at 1045. We tried to enjoy what we could while there. The highlight was probably the squid helicopter at one of the entrances close to the car park. Non-food merchandise from Karatsu were also being sold at the market. I loved the ceramics the most. If you are into them as well, I would suggest buying the hamaguri-shaped bowl. It is traditional Karatsu kitchenware. We fortunately found a restaurant that had similar service features to what he wanted to dine at- 透明 (clear) squid sashimi, tentacles were cut off and turned into crisp tempura and also grilled. The amounts surprisingly increased when we got them back. Add this to your lists if you enjoy invertebrate breakfasts.

Morning market visited on weekday. Probably not as busy as it would be on weekend and not all vendors were there. The shops opened offered some of the freshest grilled seafood. Displaying Iki's history, including the diorama of nearby Harunotsuji ruins, which was the capital of "Iki state", described in the Chinese historical text of "Records of the Three Kingdoms." Saruiwa (Monkey Rock)

Mentioned on

Scenic spot

Saruiwa, also known as Monkey Rock, is a famous landmark on Iki Island. This 45-meter high basalt rock is located in the western part of the island and is renowned for its unique shape that resembles a monkey. Situated at the tip of the Kurosaki Peninsula, Saruiwa offers breathtaking scenery with its massive monkey-like rock and beautiful vertical joints.
Our family trip to Monkey Rock on Iki Island was an unforgettable adventure. The journey began with a scenic drive through the lush, green landscapes of the island, setting the tone for a day filled with wonder and excitement. As we approached Monkey Rock, we were greeted by the striking rock formation resembling a monkey’s face, which instantly fascinated both the kids and adults. The area around Monkey Rock is rich in natural beauty, with stunning coastal views and vibrant, unspoiled nature. We spent the morning exploring the rocky shoreline, where the kids delighted in discovering tiny crabs and colorful sea creatures in the tide pools. The air was filled with the sound of waves crashing against the rocks and the distant calls of seabirds, creating a serene and captivating atmosphere. We enjoyed a picnic lunch in a nearby park, surrounded by the island’s unique flora. Sharing stories and laughter, we felt a deep sense of connection with each other and the natural world around us. In the afternoon, we hiked along one of the scenic trails, taking in the panoramic views of the ocean and the island’s rugged coastline. Our visit to Monkey Rock on Iki Island was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and family bonding, leaving us with cherished memories and a newfound appreciation for this beautiful corner of the world.

The most iconic spot in Iki Island. The rock indeed looks like a monkey with his back and his head looking to the left side. There are also a parking lot, a souvenir shop and a toilet here. Free entrance, no tickets, so it is worth for pictures. But other than that, there’s nothing much to do. I visited this place on May 17 at around 5:30 PM, but there was no one here. I guess the reason was that it was still not peak season and was quite late. The sky was gloomy on thay day. Only the rock surprised me cuz it really does resemble a monkey, though the sea view was like “meh…” to me. I think the sea view would have been beautiful if it had been sunny.

(Translated by Google) I visited during the Obon period to pay my respects. I noticed a police car waiting on a nearby road and wondered what was going on, but I'll explain that later... By chance, there were few other tourists, so I was able to visit without any problems. It's a simple shrine, with explanatory signs scattered throughout. As I was strolling around the grounds, I heard angry shouts coming from in front of the shrine office. A group of Korean people were being yelled at by the priest (?). It seemed they'd mistakenly entered the entrance to Toyotamahime no Mikoto's tomb, and he was telling them, "If you've taken even one step, put your money in! Put your money in quickly!" Judging from the behavior of the group of tourists, it seemed they really didn't understand, as the instructions were only in Japanese. "Only those who understand the instructions come here! If you don't understand, don't come," they were repeatedly told. I don't think even Japanese people would recognize it at a glance. There's only a box resembling a fortune-telling slip placed next to the shrine office. Afterwards, they continued to wander around the grounds, constantly keeping an eye out for anything of interest. Seeing this, I understood why police are stationed nearby. I'd like to express my sincere thanks to the police for taking turns patrolling the area... But I'm sure the priests have also been troubled by the bad manners of tourists, which is probably why they're so annoyed. However, I'm worried that this may leave a bad impression on Japanese people. It would be great if we could all come to some kind of solution, such as not treating first-time visitors rudely, clearly indicating the way forward, hiring guide staff to be on-site, or posting large notices in foreign languages. It's difficult, isn't it?

On a clear day you can see South Korea from this site, I actually filmed it with my drone but couldn’t upload videos of it. Please enjoy the perspective photos and if you ever on Tsushima pay this place a visit.

Nice location with a building with interesting architecture with parking for cars and busses. Comparing to the photos previously posted on here, they have restructured the entrance. There are some picnic tables and an ice cream vending machine. There is also a bathroom and free wi-fi.

You can see Busan of Korean peninsula under nice weather. It may be nice to see from here but to understand why and how Chosen Tsushinshi, Korean Emissary, passed Korea strait is more interesting.

A place where you can see a Tsushima leopard cat if you are lucky. We had the opportunity to see one, but it was sleeping. The exhibition is through glass and you should not use flash on your camera as it will disturb the cats. There is a lot of information about the leopard card, mainly in Japanese but you can use google translate. This center has a very important cause and saves leopard cats. There is also other information about local wildlife. Staff very kindly, as we arrived at 10 minutes before closing and they still let us go. Please pay attention to the closing time- 16:00. Entrance was free.

I love the work that these amazing people do here. They put in their heart and soul to protect the Tsushima Leopard cat. It's a small but very informative centre and there's a leopard cat you can see. They have lots of information on display about the local wildlife and protection. It's very child friendly too. They way they show the cats just shows you how much love goes into their work and I truly think that is beautiful.

(Translated by Google) You can learn about Tsushima wildcats and other creatures that live on Tsushima. It's also great that it's free to enter. You can also hear the birds sing one by one, which is a nice touch. The brown-eared bulbuls are always annoying, though lol. Tsushima wildcats are kept here, but today they were in a shed. It protects Tsushima wildcats and allows visitors to see them in their natural habitat. Inside, there are exhibits providing detailed information about the species. The facility also conducts research and surveys. It's adjacent to Saozaki Park, so it's a good idea to visit both parks. *Photo taken with Nikon's flagship mirrorless camera, the Z9.
