Sights & Landmarks
Ancient Ruins
The Fortifications of Xi'an, also known as Xian City Wall, is a well-preserved ancient defensive system in China. Built in 1370 during the Ming dynasty, it spans 13.7 kilometers and is surrounded by a dry moat. The imposing walls feature imposing gates and offer a cycling path atop for visitors to explore. This historical site holds great significance for the Chinese nation and has been designated as a national cultural site.
It a magnificent city wall, I think best to visit during evening time where the place it lit up with light. Feel it is more romantic at night, compared the day time. If want to cover the whole city wall best to rent a bike. We only manage to cover quarter of it and we are all drop dead tired.
Achel T — Google review
Nice place to walk along, you can also rent a bike. A few shops and places to eat along the way . We also stopped to do the vr experience which was amazing, we had to defend the wall and it was lots of fun. See pictures of what it looks like here.
Hankinsonholidays — Google review
Interesting ancient Walls of Xi'an City built under the Emperor Hongwu. There are several doors through which you can enter. On top, there is a large path that you can follow and even ride a bike for the trip of 14 km around. The Xi'an City walls are very well preserved and have been renovated/rebuilt 3 times over the centuries. The part that I have seen is not particularly wonderful. However, it can be fun for a short visit and walk.
Oliver K — Google review
It was cool. They have bike rentals on top of the wall, make sure you get a decent one. You'll see the ladies dressed in old style clothing having a photo shoot. Trip.com offers the service for $140. My wife and her family were able to do the same thing near the Bell Tower for a fraction of the price. Check with the local places first before ordering online.
Saipan S — Google review
Lovely way to see Xi’an city from the top of the wall! We got up to the wall from Jian-Guo Gate (建國門, walk past East Gate (長樂門), and got off from Zhong-Shan gate (中山門). Nice easy walk on top of the wall and you can see both inside and outside of the Xi’an city. There were bike for hire to ride on top of the wall too. When you get off the Little East Gate (小東門), stopped over Yong Xin Fong (永興坊), lots of stalls selling local snacks. Not a bad day to spend the morning when you are in Xian.
David C — Google review
Absolutely loved it here. If your in Xian, give this place a wonder. There's a few places to see as you come off the wall to attractions, like temples and museums. You can hire a bike to get around, and with 14 kilometres of a rectangle to cover I suggest you think about it, haha. There were loads of surviver stalls, but no-one approached us for sales.
Adrian L — Google review
Impressive walls surrounding the city. Especially the gates are architectural highlights. Best to see everything by bike. Start your bike tour at the south gate. There are bike rentals at every gate, but the loop is interrupted for bikes at a section near the south gate. Plan an hour to do the 13km loop.
S S — Google review
Beautiful overnight. If it's not raining, renting a bicycle would be a great alternative to do the round route. Wherever you go to China, take your passport with you, no identity, no entry.

Famen Temple

Specialty Museums
Famen Temple, a revered ancient site, boasts a tall pagoda and sacred relics of the Buddha. It is considered one of the most beautiful and historical temples in the world as it houses significant artifacts of Buddhism. The temple features a blend of modern and traditional Buddhist elements, creating a unique atmosphere for visitors to experience.
I saw one of Buddha’s fingers (allegedly). Some cool history here, but no English tour guides, so study your Chinese or bring an interpreter. Overall, a unique temple worth visiting if you are in the area. Make sure to go during one of the days where you can see the finger bone.
Emoney F — Google review
The old temple is beautiful and three museums nearby are definitely worth the visit. Not too sure about the new developed temple. It looks too modern and not Buddhist temple like?!
David C — Google review
From 5–12 May 1987, after the opening of an underground palace, four relics claimed to be directly related to Buddha were found. Two of these were made of white jade. The third relic was from a famous monk. These three are called "duplicate relics" (影骨). They were placed together with a "true relic" (靈骨) in order to protect them. The true relic is yellow-colored, with bone-like secretory granules. It is believed to be a finger bone of the Gautama Buddha (Sakyamuni). Thereafter, Famen Temple became a Buddhist place of pilgrimage due to the discovery of what is claimed as a true relic of Buddha. The finger bone was preserved in the innermost box in a set of eight boxes, each of which encloses the next-smallest box wrapped in a layer of thin silk. The outermost box was in sandalwood and had rotted away, but the smaller boxes were in gold, some in silver, and one in jade, and are in a good state of preservation. Each box has a silver lock and was exquisitely carved. The true relic is exactly the same as the description by the Tang dynasty Buddhist DaoXuan and other Tang dynasty records.
Honor — Google review
one of the most beautiful and historical temple in the world contains the artifacts of buddhism.
Leslie B — Google review
Interesting site, it looks like a lot of modern statues and buildings were built on top of the original site. We also paid for the Buddhist monk style meal which had an amazing fried aubergine/eggplant do sh. Look to book a translator or device as well.
Crimsonpig101 — Google review
A huge temple mixture of modern and traditional Buddhist elements
Guolei W — Google review
I rated this temple a five because of the sheer size. It is pretty new and it is built to attract visitors. The site is huge and you should get the ticket with the tram ride to save some walking and get away from the sun. There are several buildings to visit and a museum where the relic is kept. This place is a must if you are a staunch Buddhist.
Julian W — Google review
Nothing special and quiet place, but I think it is special for Buddhism because they claim this place has the remain of Buddha.

Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Mentioned on

Non-profit organization
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a renowned conservation facility that offers visitors the chance to observe giant pandas and other endangered animals. Situated about 10 kilometers from downtown Chengdu, this base covers approximately 247 acres and serves as a scientific research and breeding center, public education site, and educational tourism destination. It is dedicated to the protection and breeding of endangered Chinese wildlife such as giant pandas and red pandas. Visitors can also opt for a panda volunteering experience at the center.
amazing experience. We got to see the pandas and their babies. Unfortunately only for a small amount of time since it got hot pretty soon and pandas don't like hot temperatures. So I recommend you going there when the weather is a bit cooler. Prepare to go early in the morning. Pandas will be out for some time before they go to sleep. We arrived around 10:30 am and most of the pandas were already sleepy. It was also interesting to see the red pandas.

The Panda Breeding Center in Chengdu, China is one of the most heartwarming and unique places I’ve ever visited. It’s not just a zoo — it’s a research and conservation center where you can see giant pandas being cared for, bred, and protected in a natural, peaceful environment. The moment you enter, the atmosphere feels calm and green, surrounded by bamboo forests and clean walking paths. The pandas are the real stars here — you can see them eating bamboo, climbing trees, and even rolling around lazily. Watching baby pandas playing together is the most adorable sight imaginable!
Madan A — Google review
Absolutely incredible l. It was everything I dreamed of and more. World class zoo type place. Heaps of enclosures for different weather, full of natural elements for the animals. Stunning grounds full of beautiful forests and gardens. Amenities everywhere to meet a wide range of needs. Excellent food options, interpreter options, shuttle buses and exhibits. Had perfect cool weather, animals were very active.
Elliot P — Google review
The universe doesn’t need more proof of perfection, but here it is. Pandas eating, sleeping, and occasionally rolling downhill like fuzzy boulders. Red pandas sneaking around trees, also eating because clearly that’s a species-wide policy. And the humans? We join the cult willingly, buying panda-shaped ice cream, panda hats, panda buns. It’s not a zoo, it’s a black-and-white lifestyle brand. Even the trash bins have ears. Everywhere you look, someone’s smiling, someone’s taking 200 identical photos, and a panda’s chewing like a philosopher who’s found peace in carbohydrates. The air smells of bamboo and faint existential joy. 5/5. You don’t visit Chengdu Panda Base. You surrender to it.
Wade W — Google review
Easily accessible from Chengdu either by bus or taxi. Close up with pandas in their enclosures. You will be entertained by the playful characteristics of the pandas. You can also see red pandas. Do go in the morning as pandas are more actives. There's a rest area where you can enjoy drinks or food
May Y — Google review
Very very large park with multiple pandas residing here. The park is huge hence be prepared to walk. Not all pandas are viewable given the weather condition. Some will be indoors within air conditioned enclosures and not available for viewing during hot days. Managed to see 1 who was chilling in running water. There is also a red panda which is a smaller species. Retails sales is brisks. We got some within the park and bought more outside at the stall. The latter price is a lot cheaper hence withstand the urge until you have exited the park.
WorstDad — Google review
I think it’s a good place to explore and it’s nicely made and informative but don’t bother to go during the summer months if it’s hot! All giant pandas will be indoors which makes the whole experience like a zoo visit with hundreds of people trying to get a nice photo/video through the glas wall. Only red pandas would be outdoors. If you in Chengdu and temperatures are above 26 degrees Celsius, skip the trip.
Anna C — Google review
We only saw a small part of the big 25Hectare site as our hosts (the city of Chengdu as part of the UNESCO Festival of Intangible Cultural Heritage) treated us to this wonderful morning visit there. However, we did see several panda, mostly juvenile and the museum and loved both. We did not go through the main entrance so I cant comment on that but we did have a English speaking guide. If I ever go back to Chengdu (maybe) I'd love to spend a whole day there as they also have Red Panda which I love:-) This was in June so not sure if that is considered shoulder season. We were told that the wait at the most famous panda He Hua was 3 hours on the day we were there, so I guess it can get very busy there.

Luodai Ancient Town

Mentioned on
10 lists
National park
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Luodai Ancient Town, situated just 20 kilometers from downtown Chengdu, is a captivating glimpse into the architectural and cultural legacy of the Hakka people who settled in Sichuan centuries ago. The town's well-preserved Guild Halls are a dominant feature, showcasing elaborate designs and woodwork that narrate tales of a bygone era. Its streets boast traditional teahouses, antique shops, and local eateries along stone pavements.
The main attraction is the Hakka communal home, the 4-storey round shape building that is similar to Mulan's childhood home in the famous Disney cartoon about a Chinese heroine. There is a museum of Hakka culture and a trace of Hakka people migration to various parts of China. To get there from Chengdu by public transport, there is a BRT line K7, with a 2 RMB fare. It is a nice little ancient town on the outskirts of Chengdu that is worth a half day visit. The exact location on Google Map is "Boke Town".
Sukid P — Google review
Worth a visit this hidden gem near Chengdu, learned more the history of Hakka. Proud to be a Hakka 😎
Robby L — Google review
Interesting place to have a walk about with plenty of street food. Very crowded when we were there on Sunday. Just be careful with the open drains as I saw a few people stepping into them. The local authorities should close them up.
Cher K — Google review
Everything was closed unfortunately, the main road had some shops open. Looks like it is under renovation, good for a little walk but need to check if works are done to avoid disappointment.
Luca P — Google review
The architecture is quite different than what it can be seen around, as it's specific to the Hakka tribu living at Luodai. It worths to be seen for its particular buildings.
Fabrice G — Google review
They call it the number one Hakka town in West China. I find it fun. A lot of food. A nice getaway destination if u live in Chengdu. If u a tourist. No need tho.
Arvi W — Google review
If you have a lot of time in Chengdu, it's worth a day trip. You can get a taxi for about 18 dollars including the toll or the bus for about 50 cents. The town has recently been rebuilt so it's not original, but it remains a fun day out. There are lots of shops selling local Hakka snacks and crafts. There are also activities such as shooting games and trick art houses. However, it can be difficult to get back to Chengdu, it's best to get a bus as taxis are usually full when you find them. Good for families and kids.
Shayda M — Google review
A walk to remember This is not the typical built ancient town, it still has the old vibes although part of it is rebuilt and has plenty of stores. The walk along the street is pleasant and if one gets out of the street there's a nice park with a lake where people can walk, rent a boat or have a pick nick. It's easy to get there from Chengdu. My friends and I took two buses in total (4 rmb to get there). The bus stops at Luodai bus station and then the ancient street starts quite close from that (with hon is easy to see because it's marked as green on the map). We took buses 81 and 219 (1h30m). Luodai Golden Wall This is a must day your around Chengdu. It's super easy to get there and the views are beautiful. This wall is not as impressive as the Great Wall in Beijing but it gets close. We took three buses from Chengdu to get there (1h50m). The bus arrived to Luodai town bus station (I recommend to visit the ancient town before or after the wall), from there you can take a small bus to the beginning of the wall (it's the last stop and the ticket office is nearby). The ticket entrance is 10 rmb (no discounts for students or elders). It takes around two hours to go up and down. At the top of the wall there's a temple and the hiking isn't very strong, just rest when you feel tired. We took buses 81, 219 and 853. To go back just take the same buses but mind that the last one is at 6h30pm and the wall closes around 6pm.

The Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing, China is a cultural treasure trove showcasing regional artwork, stone carvings, and relics from ancient to modern times. As the largest museum in Chongqing, it's a must-visit for culture enthusiasts. The museum offers insights into the Yangtze River and the Mountain City through its extensive collection of cultural relics including ancient human specimens, bronze wares of the Ba and Shu States, Han Dynasty artifacts, and more.
The museum has many floors and a huge number of exhibits. It is a great place to learn about Bayu culture. There are drinking water, toilets and other services.
FS C — Google review
The dome shaped China Three Gorges Museum is free to public, and it displays four main themes for educational, research and preservation purposes. You can learn the ancient Ba-Yu culture and history, early Chongqing and the epic Three Gorges Dam. The museum also has a large collection of relics and artifacts, and all are the original versions. Entrance is free, however you need to pre-register online and generate a QR code for the security guard to scan upon entering. The museum is very popular among domestic tourists too, so be prepared to wait in line for the checking of tickets and also security screening. Suggested time is 1-2 hours depending on how detailed you wanna read the descriptions of the artifacts. Most of it is in Chinese though.
Donovan L — Google review
The Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing is definitely one of the must-do itineraries when visiting the city. Located right across from the Great Hall of the People, the museum itself is modern and impressive, both in scale and design. Inside, you’ll find well-curated exhibits that cover a wide range of topics—from the history and culture of Chongqing to the monumental Three Gorges Dam project, ancient artifacts, and even wartime history. The exhibitions are detailed and engaging, offering a good mix of cultural relics, multimedia, and reconstructed scenes that bring history to life. You can easily spend half a day here walking through the different galleries, and there’s a lot to absorb, so pacing yourself is key. It’s not just about the Three Gorges; it’s also a window into the heritage of the entire region. The museum is free to enter, which makes it even more worthwhile. With its thoughtful displays, spacious layout, and comprehensive storytelling, it’s a great place for both history lovers and casual visitors who want to understand Chongqing beyond its food and scenery.
Crumpled N — Google review
There are several exhibitions showing the history of Chongqing in different time periods. Most of the text descriptions are in Chinese only, so you can use a translator application on your phone. The entrance is free of charge. There are also many different souvenir shops inside

Museum about the geography, culture and history of the three gorges area of China (Yangtze River Civilisation). Wonderful museum, but there is too much to see! There are too many rooms, by the end we were tired and rushing through the rooms in order to finish our visit sooner. Other than that, it's a great visit with a lot of interesting stuff.

Ciqikou, located on the bank of the Jia Ling River near its confluence with the Yangtze, is a charming ancient village that offers a glimpse into the past of Chongqing. With narrow streets and traditional buildings, this 1.2 square kilometer area retains an old-world charm amidst modern developments in Chongqing. The village is home to souvenir shops and restaurants where visitors can experience local flavors.
Best old town at Chongqing, not hidden by a bridge or fulled of tourist shops, even if there are some.

Navigating: Chengdu Metro Line 1—get off at Wenshu Monastery Station, just a short walk away. Temple grounds are slippery after rain—watch your step! Photos inside the prayer halls are not allowed; respect the signs and monks’ privacy. Entrance to temple is free. Joss stick and water provided after main entrance. Good to spend about 2-4 hours if you have time.

I liked this monestary. I have visited twice, just because I was twice in the area. Fort time it was over Chinese hollidays and it was full of people, many of them practicing prayers. It was very nice to see them in the holy visit. Next time was 3 weeks later, during the week and no holliday. It was much less crowded, but also lowe feeling of holy place that is in use. Probably this monestary was the only place I liked more over hollidays than later:)

Such a quiet and beautiful monastery. Went there in the morning to enjoy the peaceful place. It opens at 8. You’ll be amazed with the beauty of the different type of Buddha statues. About 200. And the most iconic is the Jade one.

A peaceful and spiritual spot in the heart of Chengdu. Wenshu Monastery is beautifully maintained, with serene gardens, intricate architecture, and a calming atmosphere. It's a great place to slow down, reflect, and experience traditional Buddhist culture. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Chengdu!

Kuan Alley and Zhai Alley, also known as Wide and Narrow Alley, are vibrant cultural hubs located in Chengdu. These ancient streets offer a wide array of activities for visitors of all ages. Families can explore characteristic shops featuring craft workshops and handmade souvenirs, including panda-themed products at Panda House and Panda Post. The area is also renowned for its local dining specialties, such as rice cookies and Sichuan skewers.
A great historic place to visit in Chengdu! 🌸 Kuan Alley and Zhai Alley are full of charm, with traditional architecture and a lively atmosphere. There are many bustling shops selling snacks, souvenirs, and local crafts — perfect for strolling and discovering something new. I highly recommend visiting one of the teahouses to enjoy a relaxing cup of tea, but do be cautious of tourist scams (check prices before ordering!). Also, renting a traditional dress is a fun experience — dress up and explore! 📸 There are so many beautiful photo spots throughout the area. Overall, a must-visit spot for both culture and fun.

A very popular tourist spot in central Chengdu, that sports a good amount of souvenir shops, cafes and eateries with their traditional shows (like face changing). We did manage to experience both the day and night crowd, and was actually not too tough to still manoeuvre within the streets despite the heavy crowd since everyone is just pacing slowly - though they do get pushy once they are split from their families. It’s pretty easy to navigate the entire area since it’s mostly a one way street up and down, with just 2 lanes where most of the shops are located. While it’s nothing too unique, it’s worth a visit if you are travelling to Chengdu since it’s very near the city centre.

Had a great time here! I got my portrait cut out of paper and framed by a very talented artist—such a unique souvenir. Tried the local specialty dandanmian (so tasty!) and finished with some delicious ice cream. The alleys are beautiful and full of life, though it does get very crowded, so go early if you can.

Kuanzhai Alley is a beautiful historic street. You can find everything here — from drinks and food to souvenirs — all of them are tasty and charming. I really want to come back to this famous alley and hang out.

loved our evening visit here (at the suggestion of friends who knew it). We took the subway and the subway station is right at the entrance to the alleys. Its essentially an area of old houses filled with shops and restaurants (for tourists). There are public (squat) toilets as well if anybody is wondering:-) Loved it!

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Dazu Rock Carvings is a vast site featuring numerous religious sculptures and engravings, some of which date back over 1,000 years. The well-preserved historical carvings depict both hell and good merit, while the site also boasts many Buddha figures including the famous Thousand-Hand Buddha of gold and a lying Buddha. Located outside the city, the attraction offers excellent hiking opportunities as well as several food stalls and touts.
It's a wonderful place to visit and see the unique rock carvings in the large mountain. The carvings are exquisite and tell a story. The walking trail is easy to follow.
Tony C — Google review
This is the second stone carving area in Dazu area, accounting for about 80% of the stone carvings. The first area called Baoshan is about 15km from this second area, so you should buy a package ticket there for a cheaper price. Baodingshan area is very large, with little shade, so it is very hot, so you should buy a bus ticket. It takes about 2-3 hours here on average. It is very overwhelming to see the stone carving system here, built over many generations. The stone statues are carved very skillfully, using a lot of knowledge of physics and optics, so the statues are very vivid. Each statue conveys a story or a message, even a secret, a guide to the treasure behind. Before coming here, you should read in advance to learn the meaning of the statues, it will make your visit much better. Although this land has suffered many earthquakes, the statue system has never been affected. The three largest Buddha statues here are carved standing sideways, but the craftsmen skillfully created support columns through the flaps of the robe so the statues still stand firmly. You will be very excited to find iPhones and iPads in the hands of the Buddha nearly 1000 years ago. This is a must-see place when coming to Chongqing.

Dazhu Rock Carvings Chongqing area is about a 90 minute drive from Chongqing City. The drive is definitely worth it. The rock carvings are fantastic, diverse and so numerous. How did they carve these amazing figures into the rocks. Incredible. A must visit.
Sifu B — Google review
The rock carvings are impressive and worth seeing. However, it is strongly advised not to take the museum’s guide. The guides tend to rush through the museum without providing explanations or meaningful information. Afterward, they lead visitors into a large area where they attempt to sell museum art. This approach can detract from the experience of appreciating the carvings and the museum’s exhibits. It might be better to explore the museum independently or use an audio guide if available to fully enjoy the visit at your own pace. This advice aligns with visitor experiences reported at various rock carving museums which emphasize the value of self-paced exploration over guided tours that focus on sales.

Huanglongxi Ancient Town Tourism Area (Northeast Gate)

Huanglongxi Ancient Town Tourism Area, located in Chengdu, China, is a charming destination for a day trip. This historical town boasts cobblestone streets lined with stilted buildings from the Ming and Qing eras, as well as ancient temples and a water mill. To reach Huanglongxi Ancient Town from Chengdu, travelers can purchase bus tickets at Chadianzi Bus Station for approximately 15 to 16 RMB and head to platforms 32 or 36.
Ancient village that has been modernized into tourist attractions. There's a small river that run through town. Along both side of the river there's little shop with the ancient exterior, but modernized interior. Majority of the shop keeper do not speak English. They accepted both cash and QR payments. A very nice place to view and spend the morning

I loved this ancient town. The charming, man-made stream that winds through the area adds to its peaceful and quaint atmosphere. A short, 15-minute fire show by the river is a highlight—you can watch it from the riverbank or enjoy it while sitting in a boat. While clearly a tourist destination with plenty of food and souvenir shops, it still retains a unique charm that’s both relaxing and memorable.

A ancient Street known for its beautiful wooden buildings and quiet canals. The streets are packed with visitors, and you’ll find many stalls offering tasty Sichuan-style skewers, full of bold, spicy flavors. Despite the crowds, it’s a great place to experience local culture and food in a traditional setting.
Bee S — Google review
Walking along the Main Street, you can see the whole place was really commercialised with many shops selling souvenirs. A bit like Main Street Disneyland (Chinese Ancient town version). I didn’t really like the place until I turned left into “Food Street”with a shallow stream running in the middle and many families wading and playing water. It gave life and a celebratory mood to the whole town. We sat down at a noodle shop to have lunch but the food wasn’t really fantastic. The bowl of noodle has a lot of noodles and only a finger’s length of fat intestine. What a disappointment. The Siew Mai (dumpling) was filled with glutinous rice instead of minced pork which we were more used to ( Cantonese dim sum version).

Leshan Giant Buddha

Monuments & Statues
The Leshan Giant Buddha, an awe-inspiring statue carved from a stone cliff between 713 and 803 AD, stands as the largest and tallest cliff stone carving in the world. Nestled at the confluence of three rivers—Min, Qingyi, and Dadu—this monumental figure was originally created to protect against floods and bless the local populace. Known historically as 'Lingyun Buddha,' it is a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts visitors from all over.
The site itself is impressive and definitely worth seeing, but our experience in August during the holiday season was far from pleasant. The place was absolutely packed, like most attractions we visited during our 16-day trip around China. We booked VIP passes for the boat, which gave us priority access and a cooler waiting area. However, once the gates opened for all passengers, it still turned into a fight to get a spot upstairs for photos. We also had VIP passes for the park to see the Buddha’s head. This involved following a local guide, who tried to make it feel more worthwhile, but we were exhausted, overheated, and only managed a quick glance before leaving. If you plan to visit in August, either buy VIP passes or be prepared to face the crowds with a lot of patience.

The giant Buddha is impressive. Don't just go for the photos. You'll have to appreciate the history and how long it took to achieve this massive project back in those days. I'd recommend both a boat trip and a walk around its head. We booked the boat ride through one of the popular travel websites, and the tour guide charged only ¥10 pp for an additional guided walking tour. If you're over 60 entrance is free. So it was a no brainer. The only catch is you'll have to understand Mandarin.
Debbie L — Google review
When visiting Leshan, the Leshan Giant Buddha is an absolute must-see. As the largest stone-carved seated Buddha in the world, the statue is towering and magnificent, standing 71 meters tall. From a distance, its scale is awe-inspiring. Standing at the foot of the Buddha and looking up, you can truly appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship and dedication of the ancient artisans, which evokes a deep sense of reverence. The surrounding scenic area is beautiful, with well-maintained walkways and lush greenery. Walking along the viewing platforms, you can admire the Buddha from different angles and even get a panoramic view of the confluence of the Minjiang River. While the site can get crowded, the layout is reasonable, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Ticket prices are reasonable, and visiting hours are flexible. It’s best to go in the early morning or late afternoon when there are fewer people and the lighting is ideal for photography. Overall, the Leshan Giant Buddha is not only a symbol of religious culture but also a breathtaking historical wonder that leaves a lasting impression.

Sacred area, even tibetian Monks come here to visit and pray. We "spoke" with one nice tibetian Monks, which was quite interesting and charming. It is a very beautiful area and has more to offer than the great sitting stone Buddha. Of course IT IS the Main Attraction, but you can find many other Buddhist Things which are also very beautiful to endeavour. However, It can get very, very crowded. We visited on an empty weekday...and there we're too many people so we skipped the walk down to the Buddha feet because the Queue already lined Up to the top. I can recommend the Spot, but be aware that there will BE too many people and guided Tours. It is a Business.

Overrated yes but a must visit when you are in Leshan. Short taxi ride from city. Walk from ticket office to entrance for some views but be prepared to climb up steps to get to the buddha. Piece of advise-get there when it opens to avoid the crowd and good photo opportunities. We were there 2 days and yhe 1st was a total chaos where we skipped the 3-hour queue to get to the feet of rhe buddha statue but returned next day 8am and walked straight to the bottom with no queue. There are also other places of visit within the park. Do not.miss them but again some places require some uphill climb. Once done get a taxi across the river to a food street and enjoy the food and view.

The largest Buddha in the world, it has an amazing story behind. Easy to reach from Chengdu by rail and bus. It is a big complex and there are several entrances. Be ready to walk a lot and to go up and down stairs. You will arrive to the top part and then you can go also to the base of the Buddha. There are also boats to see the Buddha from the river but you need to buy a separate ticket and when I went the pier was actually quite far

Take boat to view Giant Budha 70 yuan. About 30 minutes ride. Can take long walk if you're fit, stll have to pay. Before this, before visiting Dujiangyan Irrigation System Project there is a restaurant that has 2 great specialty, 1. The tiny fish that fried till you can eat the bones at 198 yuan, a hustle so bargain anfd also a large live chicken where they cook for you in 2 ways, again hustle. Cheap and good, Panda Vege and Fried Egg. Below is a picture of the place. The tour guide will take you there.
Cecil C — Google review
The easy way is to take the boat ride which will stop just in front of the Buddha for everyone to take photos, otherwise the hard way is to trek along the side of the mountain for a close up view from the side of the head and in front of the feet.

Emei Mountain

Sights & Landmarks
Emei Mountain, located in Sichuan Province, China, is a breathtaking destination that beautifully blends nature and culture. As one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, it stands tall at 3,099 meters and offers stunning views from its Golden Summit. The journey typically begins at Baoguo Temple, the entrance to this scenic area and an essential stop for climbers.
Takes 1.5 hours from Emei Mountain Station (bullet train) to reach the cable car stop. Then some climbing and walking for 15 minutes from the cable car stop to the cable car queue. There is plentiful of food and drinks along the way to the cable car queue. Depending on the season you are here, the queue can take from 15 mins to a hour. After the cable car ride, expect to walk and climb more stairs to reach the golden peak. Please factor in the travelling time (at least 4 hours round trip. I did it as a day trip from Chengdu. Took the 835am train and reached the bullet train station at 10am. Reached the peak at about 12pm. Departed the peak at 230 and returned to Chengdu at about 7pm. The view is awesome but so the entry ticket price. Note that the initial ticket purchased at the bullet train station does not include the cable car right to the peak. Remember to top up at the ticketing counter before joining the queue!

I visited Emei Mountain a few years ago, and the experience still lingers in my memory like the mountain's ever-present mist. Starting our journey from Chengdu, we hopped on a bullet train, which was fast and comfortable. Once we arrived, we switched to a bus > Cable car that took us up the mountain—a ride that felt like an adventure in itself. I remember we had to pay at several checkpoints along the way, but the excitement of heading toward the summit made it all feel worth it. As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed into a dreamy, surreal world. The mountain was blanketed in thick clouds and mist, giving everything an ethereal, almost otherworldly vibe. While we couldn’t see much of the panoramic views that Emei is famous for, the atmosphere was so peaceful and mystical that it didn’t matter. In fact, the mist made it even more beautiful in its own quiet, magical way. We spent the night at a small inn on the mountain, which added a rustic charm to the whole experience. In the morning, we made our way back to Chengdu, hearts full and cameras foggy. Even without the clear skies, Emei Mountain left a lasting impression—one of serenity, beauty, and a touch of the divine.

Beautiful on a good day, but horrendous visibility on a rainy and wet day. Look up the forecast before you come as it's a two to four hour journey at the very least to get up to the top (including the crowded gondola and ~2,000 step walk uphill).

To reach the top , first there was the shuttle bus ride then had to hike up the mountain to the cableway station. There was monkeys along the way with some very aggressively looking for food. At the cableway, 100 people were packed into a single ride so you have to be either the first or last on to be able to get a view on the way. After getting off, had to hike again to reach the summit with the giant Buddha and gold, silver and bronze halls. Apart from the summit there is another cableway which is for the Wangnian Temple. From there, it was a leisure trek downhill with alot of hostels overlooking a very peaceful lake.

If you are seeking a mountain/nature experience, seek elsewhere! This is more of a Buddhist cultural experience, to see a massive gold tribute to Buddha made up of elephants, bodisattvas and statues. Thousands of visitors come to pay homage, circling three times in prayer. 90 minutes by shuttle bus from Emei transport station; 20 - 30 minutes up stairs; and 20 minutes (if you are lucky) up to 45 minutes wait in queues for a 100 person crowded 10 minute cable car ride. Or you could walk the 6km 600 m vertical ascent, if the altitude doesn't bother you. Often cloudy and cold at the 3077m top so don't expect views.

Spent 2 days and 1 night in the park. Took a bus from Yibin Nan bus station in the middle of the city (Xijie st on google maps) to Changning. They depart every 50 minutes. On the way back to Yibin we used Changning Road Transportation Company (10 yuan/person), a semi private road transportation company which was on the road where the bus drops you off in Changning. We took a Didi taxi from Changning to the West Gate (90 yuan though estimated price was 50?), though there are public buses to the park - we took the number 3 back to Changning. There are frequent buses which run inside the park (5 yuan/trip) and start from the public bus station a few miles down the road, to the ticket office and then through the park on various routes. We opted to walk the whole route but the first bit to the museum is busy, narrow, and without pavement so bus is a good option. First day we walked from the West Gate ticket office-museum-sightseeing ropeway (and the short walking route to the waterfall near there) - guanhai tower - emerald gallery - ropeway over Grand Canyon - walking route to the stockaded village and lake in the sea - stayed overnight near Wanli service area (13 miles). Next day we walked around the top section which has many glass walkways and views out over the valley and back to the West Gate (9 miles). There are shuttle buses operating on 3 routes (lines), 5 yuan/journey approx every 30 minutes. Also plenty of touts driving around who will offer lifts, hotels etc. Overall worth the effort of getting to the park but probably needs an overnight due to the time and distance to get there and to see the whole park. There are quite a few (identical) restaurants in the park for meals, mainly at the service areas. We took water and snacks. There is a high speed train Yibin to Changning (17 mins!) but the times weren’t useful for this visit. Next to the bus station in Yibin was a good hotel where could leave luggage (trip.com) and a couple of good sushi places!

Yiliang Jiuxiang Scenic Area, located about an hour's drive from the Stone Forest, is often referred to as the "museum of karst caves." This natural wonder features China's largest and most impressive cave system. The area is well-maintained and offers tours through a complex underground cave network with colorful lighting that highlights the stunning geological formations.
Beautiful geological park. Everything is very well maintained, clean, and well signposted. Remember to bring your passport to buy tickets. It is quite a long walk, but some parts you have the option to take the glass slide down to the waterfall area for 30RMB. And you can also hire people to carry you in a sedan. There are lots of stalls for you to buy snacks and drinks, even a small Starbucks inside the cave! Toilets are also available, and are mostly clean. The final part of the cave is a bit steep and can be challenging. But it is a wonderful experience, very beautiful and amazing in parts. Slightly spoiled by the very noisy and very rude local tour guides who push past people and scream at the top of their voices with their microphones. Hope you can be more professional and behave.

If you are coming from Kunming , you would need to take a bus (25 RMB , 1 hr) from Kunming eastern bus station (located at Kunming east coach subway station) to Yiliang county bus station first , followed by taking bus 21 (10 RMB, 1 hr 10 min) to Jiu Xiang cave ticketing office. The ticketing office is 5 km away from the actual cave itself. At the ticketing office , you are expected to buy a trip package that include some activities such as watching a 10 min video and a boat ride to bring you to the cave and back. As such , if you only wish to visit the cave directly, there is no transportation to bring you over. It is almost impossible to find a car by ride-hailing as well. Hence, it is important to plan your time so that you enough time to do the whole trip package if you do not have your own transportation. There is a ticketing office here as well but they only sell the entrance ticket (60 RMB) and a chair-lift ride (30 RMB) to return back here. The cave itself is large and there are coloured lights to beautify the rocks. There are also some sections showing the prehistoric time on earth and another about the mythical aspect of the cave but you would need to pay (30 RMB each) if you wish to visit them. There is also a sedan chair service offered if your legs are getting tired for a fee. There are also some souvenir shops and eateries in the cave complex. There is also a fun slide (30 RMB) to go to the lower levels of the cave when you reach the upper levels. The floor is wet as the water drips from the rocks above so do be careful. The duration to tour the cave would be about 2 to 3 hours. You would need to climb up some steps at the end of the walk in the cave followed by taking a chair-lift ride back to the ticketing office.

It was an amazing experience visiting this treasure from mother nature. First of all, we began with a short boat ride at the bottom of the canyon. Then we walked through naturally carved caves and admired at the stalactites. It's enormous inside and you find river through the caves and water dribbling through the rocks and even giant waterfalls inside. The final cable ride that took us a out of the caves was an unforgettable experience as the view was stunning. Beware, it's gonna be long day with a lot of stairs. The walk took us 2-3 hours in total.

It's worth climbing hundreds of step to see all this amazing scenery.

We had Starbucks coffee inside the lion cave. The information sign posted wasn't helpful and we had difficulty locating our next stop after our coffee break. At the beautiful twin waterfalls, a photographer was there to take your photograph. Like most places in China, you then have to pay for the photo if you like it. The last stretch was more than 300 steps of uphill climb, which can be tiring for some. They have sedan chairs for hire at 30 yuan if you need help. Then you take a cable car to exit the park.

Thousands steps to finish this cave, quite good. On the exit,u'll find fruit sellers, and it's a 'must try'. They sells many kinds of fruit,so fresh and not expensive. On the exit,u may also take cable car.

This is the smaller stone forest ("Naigu"), not the famous big one. Which means we were almost alone there. There are several cool trails. We actually got a bit lost, so it is not that small at all! There is a lot to discover and it was beautiful. A hidden gem 😍 Tickets can be bought at the entrance. We went there and back with a Didi, no problem at all.

An incredible park. It's amazing to see such a thriving ecosystem in the middle of a modern city like Kunming. The amount of flowers and trees blooming in spring is incredible. There is over 100 species of birds living in this park, including some exotic ones. I didn't see many types but I suspect in the morning it would be easier. One of my favourite places in Kunming, really enjoyed it.

Very Nice spot on Ile in the Green lake. surrounded by very nice ponds. The park had been established in the early 1900 alongside the Military Academy.

A park that feels alive — not with rollercoasters, but with retirees, lovers, and ducks who clearly run the place. Everywhere you look, someone’s stretching, strolling, or feeding the local feathered mafia. Food stalls tempt you from every corner, game stalls try to rob you politely, and the ducks waddle around judging everyone’s life choices. It’s noisy, charming, and somehow relaxing. 5/5. For the ducks. Always for the ducks.

Yunnan Ethnic Village is a charming destination that showcases the diverse ethnic groups of China. Situated on a narrow peninsula on the northern shore of Dianchi Lake, this village features traditional houses in a quaint setting. Visitors can also take the Dian Lake Dragon Gate cable car from Haigeng Park to enjoy beautiful scenery and reach the entrance of Dragon Gate.
If you plan to visit Yunnan Nationalities Village, be ready to spend a whole day exploring. The park is full of colorful exhibitions and performances by local ethnic groups from different regions of Yunnan. There’s plenty of singing, dancing, and joy throughout the day. The park is divided into sections, each representing a different community from surrounding areas. Traditional village houses showcase local architecture and the lifestyle of the people, offering a strong connection to cultural traditions. You can see traditional weaving and buy local tea. A highlight is the 30-minute performance, which is definitely worth watching. The ticket costs 168 RMB. The park is clean, with well-maintained toilets and plenty of spots to get warm meals or cold drinks at reasonable prices. A wonderful place for a family trip – colorful, educational, and full of local culture. Highly recommended!

Discovering Laos offers a variety of eco-tourism experiences in the Nam Ha Biodiversity Conservation Area. The company provides trekking, kayaking, and cycling tours that allow visitors to explore the natural beauty and cultural diversity of the region. With knowledgeable guides who speak English fluently, travelers can visit ethnic minority villages, learn about local traditions, and immerse themselves in the stunning landscapes.
Just returned from an incredible 3 day/2 night trekking/kayaking and rafting trip with Discovering Laos. We did quite a bit of research before choosing them and I am so glad that we went with them. Such an open and professional company. Everything was really well organised and the guides led by Xai (Sai) were incredible. Resourceful, knowledgeable and incredibly hardworking. Xai speaks excellent English and you can ask him many different questions - anything from different plants to the Lao education system. He’s incredibly knowledgeable. We loved the walking (2 days) and kayaking/rafting (1day) on the river and I would thoroughly recommend this combination as you see different aspects of the terrain. What was really interesting was how much we learned about life in Lao and the ethnic villages and the bounties of the jungle. As visitors, we were given the privilege of seeing aspects of village life and learning about the culture and economics of the villages through Xai. I can’t think of anything I would have liked to do differently. Food was amazing, accommodation was comfortable and scenery was incredible! Thank you to the Discovering Laos team.

Best adventure tour I've done in Southeast Asia! I did a 2 day 1 night trek, The jungle trek was challenging but rewarding - 6 hours through bamboo forests and mountain streams with excellent wildlife spotting. The guides were extremely knowledgeable, spoke excellent English, and shared lots of insights about local flora and fauna. They went out of their way to ensure we had a wonderful time! The village homestay was the highlight. Authentic Laos hospitality from our host family. What impressed me most was how genuine and sustainable this felt. Real cultural exchange, not performative tourism. Kayaking was pure adrenaline - navigating the winding river and enjoying the rapids! Perfect balance of adventure and cultural immersion. Book immediately!

Highly recommend. We took 2 day 1 night walking, jungle camp trip (including a quick visit at a village). It was AMAZING. I won't spoil it for you but the views are great, the guides very nice, good english speakers and great cooks! (really the meals were better than in restaurants in town). Because of the wetether the trekk isn't the easiest but it's not hardcore either. Take swimsuits and bio shampoo to bath in a river ;) You may consider leech socks but it's not a must have. Organisation is very good including transfer through river with kayaak. Enjoy your jungle experience!

Amazing 2-day jungle/kayack/homestay adventure! The trekking through the jungle was incredible - spotted cicadas, mongoose and loads of butterflies. Our guide also stopped to forage mushrooms for our dinner. The village homestay was pure magic. Our host family welcomed us warmly despite the language barrier. We learnt how to shoot a bamboo crossbow and even rice pounding. Kayaking down the muddy river surrounded by dense jungle was spectacular. It was the perfect mix of peaceful with some rapids for a bit of an adrenaline rush. Such a cool experience!

We went for the 3 days trek and kayaking and just had the best time. We were lucky to meet Thong and the whole guides crew who made this experience unforgettable. We were a groupe of six people, we trekked the first day, kayaked the second one and had a third day of walking in the jungle. The guides were very easy going and kind, they taught us a lot about the jungle and the people living in the area, they cooked three times a day delicious meals for us; we had a very good time. We paid 99 USD for the whole thing which was very reasonable and not that expensive if we look at the prices of other agencies in the city. Glad we made the choice to trust Discovering Laos !

We did the one-day jungle trek with our guide, Thong. It was an amazing jungle experience! The guide spoke English at a good enough level so we could understand everything. He let us try many different jungle foods, which was really special. The trek included a visit to a local tribal village, then around a 6 km walk through jungle, and afterwards another stop at another small village. The whole experience took about 8–9 hours. It’s a perfect option for those who don’t have the time for a two-day trek, like in our case. The lunch provided was something truly special – a real local experience. The food was prepared by our guide’s wife, and he carried it in his backpack the whole way. It was more than enough to fill us up, but it’s definitely for those who are open to trying local food the way the locals eat it. For us, it was absolutely perfect.

We had an amazing 2D1N trek and kayak with this company. Our guides Tong and Seong were the best. They cooked amazing fresh food with supplies from the market and jungle, they work wonders with bamboo building us cups, pots, spoons, chopsticks and shot glasses, as well as our shelter. Their English was amazing also. The gentleman in the shop was very helpful with information, not too pushy and very accommodating with requests and dietary requirements. I’d definitely recommend the jungle camp option as we had great fun building the shelter and cooking in the evening. Overall amazing experience and would highly recommend to anyone in the area.

We had a very good experience with discovering Laos. Since they don't have a physical office yet, the manager came to our hotel to discuss all the options. We immediately felt very comfortable and had a lot of options to arrange a trip to our wishes. We chose a two day trekking followed by one day of kayak. The first night we slept in a homestay and the second night in a campsite where we slept under banana leafs. Our guide, Toua, was very fluent in English and had a lot of knowledge about the local villages and life in the jungle in general. We had a great experience and would DEFINITELY recommend this company to anyone who wants a similar experience in the jungle.

Forest Retreat Laos offers unique experiences that go beyond typical tourist visits. They support multiple villages and provide job opportunities for local youth in their cafe. While their trek prices may be higher, the quality of gear for activities like kayaking is excellent, and their English-speaking guides are knowledgeable and friendly. Visitors have praised the value they received compared to other companies in the area.
We went on a 2 day trek + 1 day kayak trip with 1 night camping and 1 night homestay. Our guide Lot was amazing. We had really incredible food, often foraged from the jungle. The viewpoint from the camping was beautiful. We were a group of 3 and found the price very reasonable. Book without hesitation!

It was so amazing. We did a 2day trek +1 day kajak. What an experience. Don't think about fancy stuff, but raw and real 👍🏼. Lot is just Wow-what a guide always happy and just so amazing. Also Pon super good guide. I would recommend bring some fruits or snacks with you. It's not too easy but it's totally worth it. Amazing experience and super company. We had a group of 7 people from different nationalities-brilliant.

Incredible experience with Forest Retreat Laos. We went on the 3 days (2 day hike and 1 day kayak) and we had a blast, mostly thanks to our great guide Lot. He was patient, funny and explained to us tons of things about the jungle in good english. Where he shone most was the food. He and his assistant cooked incredible dishes for all meals in the middle of the jungle. Some of the best food we had in Laos. It was also great to eat food directly foraged during our walk. Anyways, if going for a jungle hike, I wholeheartedly recommend this company - ask for Lot as your guide.

Great experience with Khong, met some awesome people and had a great time. Point of improvement would be maybe slightly more food per person but it was enough. Getting more in touch with the local village we visited would have been nice, we had what felt like a very “western” experience there.

We did a 4 day trek and it was great! Before booking we’ve checked out few other companies next door but they charged much more than Forest Retreat and offered similar treks. Very good value (we paid under 300 USD for 2 people, the whole group was 4, other companies charged this and more per person!). Guides were also great - we had Kong (really funny guy, very knowledgeable, friendly) and Jai (he is amazing! Really good English, caring, helpful and a great chef - best tomato soup we’ve ever had!!! If you do the trek ask for Jai, he the best guide we’ve had when travelling in Laos, you won’t regret it!). We had a homestay and then 2 other camp stays, everything was comfortable, we had good vegetarian food cooked for us, camp was built too, water provided, enjoyed cosy evenings by the fire and night jungle noises. Treks were beautiful, quite tough to be honest (carrying your bag up the steep hill for many hours) but we enjoyed this challenge. Walked 5-6 hours a day, mostly up the steep hills. I’m sure they can tailor the trek for you but we wanted a good challenge and we got it :) Last day we joined a local Lao village for a ‘new built house’ ceremony - that was a super fun party, experience we could never replicate again. We highly recommend the company and guides.

I did the 3 day trekking (2 days walking, 1 kayaking) in the dry season (February) and I couldn't be happier. This trek will take you through different sceneries like tree forests, riverbanks, jungle, bamboo forests... You'll visit several villages and stay overnight in one of them getting to know their lives and sharing some lao lao. At some points the hike can be pretty hard, but it's all worth it when you get to the cabin next to the river, where the sky opens, there is nobody around and you finally feel in the middle of the jungle. The last day of kayaking it was easy and fun. Special mentions to our guide, which was very helpful explaining all kind of curiosities about the surrounding nature. To Lod, our official cook who prepared delicious meals every single time and even went fishing at night to let us taste some fresh fish, and to the villagers that accompanied us on every stage doing the heavy lifting. These guys really know how to survive in the jungle with little more than a knife and a bottle of lao lao!

Mekong Smile Cruise Office offers an enchanting way to explore the stunning Mekong River in Laos through its slow boat tours connecting various towns. This experience is a favorite among travelers seeking both transportation and adventure, allowing them to soak in the breathtaking landscapes along the river. Passengers can expect exceptional service from friendly staff, including knowledgeable guides who share insights into local culture and history.
Stunningly beautiful two-day Cruise, the highlight of our holiday by a country mile! However the pickup/border is confusing and disorganised - will explain. Heads up: Get a description of what to do when entering Lao border. After many emails, it was explaining to us and confirmed by Smile Cruise that we would be met on the other side of the border with no problems. The border crossing is slow and tedious when you get there it's also very confusing about how to participate in Visa applications. We were not met for at least half hour / hour on arrival until someone from the cruise found us but only by luck. Pheww- That's a relief I think we muttered!! With no directions whatsoever and not many people who speak English except other tourists in the same situation, it can make it quite a stressfully anxious entrance, so needs to be addressed with signs and guidance! Winge over - now for the cruise itself! We were transferred to the long boat with 6 other people. You are greeted by your tour guide guide and other members of staff and away you go on your two day cruise from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang via Pakbeng. To expect nice scenery is a massive understatement, the Mekong and it's surrounding verdant hilltops is absolutely spectacular 🤩 that combined with a cool breeze whilst the boat cruises down the river at around 10 knots. The boat is comfy where you can sit on some makeshift seats remove from I believe a car or minibus, they also have a couple of area's where you can lay down and just relax to your hearts content. With the money you pay for the cruise, you can expect: Water, brilliant eastern food (including vegetarian), complimentary coffee + tea, local fruit and snacks along the way. For a fee you can purchase bottles of beer / soft drinks and they have a toilet so it all goes together nicely! The cruise contains some drop-off points where you get a chance to stretch your legs. There's a variety of different places you go to and won't go into to much depth, however be mindful that you don't get drawn in by the poverty-stricken local people after money, once you are kind enough to donate to one.. the rest will beg. Half way down you get dropped off at a place called Pakbeng which isn't up to much and will struggle to get luxurious accommodation, but is a cool backpackers hotspot and gives you a chance to eat and rest. (Hint: accommodation ISN'T provided on the Smile cruise package, need to organise separately). Overall very beautiful cruise and well worth the money, considering the cost of an internal flight will be around the same it's much more of a relaxing way to travel Lao. Plus: - Beautiful scenery - Amazing food - Time to relax and reflect - Cheap (relatively) - Adventurous - Free water and fruit Improvements: - Boarder crossing complicated - Poverty-stricken villages begging for money - Pakbeng one-horse town - Bed a great idea but invest in new mattress for extra comfort 😉 Thank you smile Cruise!

People were quite unfriendly. Locals near the pier were more helpful and friendly then the staff. Mekong Smile Cruise raised the price from 700 to 1000 baht the past year without adding any additional value (or 210000 Kip to Luang Prabang if you pay in local currency). Due to low season the boat is quite uncomfortable (not with tables like shown on the pictures) and only one boat a day is driving. The prices for food or drinks are overpriced, hence buy your snacks before your trip. Don't have too high expectations after you see the pictures.

The Mekong Smile 2 days cruise down the Mekong was absolutely worth the extra money. Seeing the public slow boats crammed full of people rushing straight past all the exceptional sights, sounds and smells made us know that we made the right decision. The booking teams was very flexible and helped us organise exactly what we wanted and the onboard team and service was nothing but smiles (and tasty food). I think a lot of the reviews here are for the public slow boat not offered by Mekong Smiles.

Very pleasant journey with Smile Mekong Cruise! Good service at their Huay Xai office to reserve with Mr. Ken. The trip was lovely! Our Lao guide named Touy was happy to share his knowledge and culture while being helpful, dedicated and friendly. The captain did a great job making the trip smooth. His wife, the cook made nice dishes with great care. Very positive experience! So grateful for the stops in the villages and cave, which felt authentic. Very special experience. Gorgeous landscape! I feel it was really worth taking this cruise package. Korp Jai! (Thank you in Lao) Note: Having read other comments, it seems like some writers might be confusing with the public slow boat...

The company was 30 minutes late to pick us up and we eventually had our hotel call them, upon which we discovered they had completely forgotten us. We boarded the tuk tuk and then he waited around for another 10 minutes before actually bringing us. When we arrived and got our tickets, to our dismay we were placed in the worst seats on the boat, in the back next to the bar and toilets. This is precisely the reason we bought the tickets the day before, so we could have a better seat near the front. When we asked the ticket office, we couldn't change our seats and they told us the company hadn't called in our reservation so effectively it was as if we had showed up at 10am to buy our ticket, meaning we got the worst seats on the boat. If I were you I wouldn't go with this irresponsible company and just arrive early to buy your ticket directly from the pier. Complete waste of money.

I travelled on the overnight sleeper bus from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, it was one of the worst travel experiences I've had. The service is billed as 'VIP' with drinks and snacks. We received the world's smallest bottle of water upon boarding and a bag to place our shoes. Nothing else. The beds were very small, anyone that would be considered above average height in Asia will struggle. Those travelling on their own be warned that you will be sharing a very narrow bed, with nothing to separate you, with possibly anyone. I'd say this is a bigger issue for women, but if you're lucky to be beside anyone broad you're going to be getting to know each other very well. The journey is very windy so while lying on the bed expect to toss and turn, with no barrier to keep you from falling out if you're on the top. All of the above would have been enough to make this a fairly miserable journey. Now we add in the driver. I don't even know where to begin with this. The driver decided to put on his music after the only rest room/food stop. This was at about 8-8.30pm. I thought maybe he just likes a bit of music for a half hour and we're only back on the bus so everyone's awake anyway. 'It'll probably stop soon'. It didn't stop. The entire bus was fortunate enough to be audience to a 7-8 hour non-stop Laotian musical performance. Not one single person asked for this. Actually, a number of people after a couple of hours of this went up and asked the driver to lower the music/turn it off given we all purchased the same SLEEPER bus. The reply from him? "No. I like the music." He even obnoxiously turned it up. At one point it seemed to me the music was only coming from the back of the bus, I. E. Where those who had asked for it to be lowered/turned off were sitting. Why did he turn it off at the front? Well to watch Lao/Muay Thai on his phone of course! How do I know this? I was in the first sleeper bed on the right so I could see and hear it all. It's rough to give the company such a poor rating due to one individual but it was without a doubt the most horrendous bus experience I've ever had. If I could go back and do it over again, I would 100% not be doing the overnight bus. Instead of meaning I got to my destination somewhat rested, I spent the next day or so recovering, effectively wasted a day catching up on sleep.

If you are willing to take the slow boat to Luang Prabang, don't buy the ticket here. They will charge you 240000 kips. Try to buy it at the Pier, which is about 1 km away from town and it costs 210000.

Mekong River

River
Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
Air travelling is no longer a luxury in the modern era but travelling by boat in the remotely third world countries is the only affordable means of transportation yet this economical freightage turns out to be an adventure close to nature and plenty of scenic views. The journey could be long and tiring but its worth every penny of the ride. On board this wooden ferry were tourists and locals sharing a trip that could only happen once in their life time. Experiencing how local live their life travelling around is one experience you comes across daily for folks living in big cities. Along the mighty Mekong river one will witness the extravagant of beauty of an acquaint uncircularizsed landscape. The untouched surrounding still frozen in time and modern days development gives you an opportunity to understand the intimacy of older generation's encounter in life. The life along the muddy water of Mekong cannot be by choice and having perceived this sight really makes me want to enjoy more of life, live to the fullest and to complain less this very minute onwards. Words cannot disclose the clarity of what I m feeling now, only my inward fullfilment feelings have been complete. Take a ride, see the sights and enjoy the fresh breeze of Mekong.

Enjoyed a leisurely cruise along the Luang Prabang portion of the Mekong River in conjunction with the visit to the Pak Ouv Caves. The view of the mountains and riverside was scenic and beautiful. The Mekong River was brown during the cruise, likely due to the frequent rain during the time of the cruise. Not sure if the colour of the river would be different during the non-rainy season

Before I made my visit to Vietnam, I had a wish list of things that I should see and enjoy. One in the top of the list was Mekong River & Basa Fish. Traveling through 6 countries and providing everything to the people Mekong has influenced the life of the people. Though it’s considered as one of the most polluted rivers in the world, it’s worth seeing the river. I was in Vietnam and I could see the last part of the Mekong River. The delta is fertile and rich in crops. The floating houses of Mekong are very famous. The delta is rich in fruits and the restaurants in the delta provide excellent food.

Sunsets are a good time to take photos of Mekong River. There is sometimes plenty of varied and many kinds of vegetation and swamps in front of the river itself.

Phu Chi Fa Forest Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Protected park with dramatic valley & peak vistas from clifftop trails, plus camping & guest houses.
I don't like hiking. However, Phu Chi Pa is easy to climb because you can use the parking lot near the summit. It is not very high at 1628m above sea level, but it offers a good enough view. If a friend asks, I will advise them to visit.

Stunning view! But would 100% recommend going there quite early for sunrise! I left my accommodation at 5.20 had a 15 minute drive and I was a bit tight to catch the sunrise. From the parking lot it’s still a good 20-30 minutes hike up in a steep road so plan accordingly. It’s worth waking up (coming from someone who normally can’t wake up before 11)

Drove from Mae Sai early in the morning to catch the sun rise. Clocked 2 hours of sleep but witnessed one of the most beautiful views, making it totally worth it! Weather up there in December was super cold for a tropical place like Thailand, maybe about 3 degrees (wind chill)? Short hike up to the peak from the carpark. You can take a pickup up the steeper parts but ultimately still have to climb a bit. In the end, it’s all worth it — just stand there and take in god’s creation!

Surreal and majestic. I would recommend staying for a night close to the park and doing the hike the next morning to see the sunrise. Amazing views of Laos from the cliff.

Took 2 hours to get to from Chiang Rai. Car park was a little lower down than where it’s shown on the maps so you’d have to walk 30 mins up to get to the view point. Even in the dark, the path was fairly straightforward—you do need a flashlight. Went around the end of March and it was foggy and overcast and cold, still a lovely experience and view. If you’re here for the pictures, you can’t see much on camera this time of year.

Great view for sunrise here. It’s a short steep drive up to the carpark and from there, it’s a 760m walk to the viewpoint. The walk up is no too difficult, but the road could be slippery on a wet day. I took about 12 mins to reach the viewpoint. It was a bit hazy on the morning we were there, but the view is still beautiful as the sun appear on the horizon. Worth the trip here

We arrived about 6am. It was still dark. The sunrise was about 6.50am. It was an amazing experience to watch the sun rise above the clouds. Well worth doing once. It was really cold. Wear many layers of warm clothes.

Such a nice place! Very peaceful, we were alone when we visited! So nice to escape the crowd for a little while. We came here as a day trip from Chiang Rai, the ride is pretty smooth, just be careful during the slopes. There is public toilet before you reach the parking lot. From the parking it’s 750m to the top, but it’s kinda steep. The view is very nice, and it’s funny to know that the highest point is actually in Laos!
