The Terry Fox National Historic Person Plaque commemorates the courageous journey of Terry Fox, an amputee and cancer activist who ran across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Located on a bluff with stunning views of Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant, this memorial marks the place where Fox was forced to end his Marathon of Hope in 1980. The site features a nine-foot-tall bronze statue of Terry, set on a granite base laid on local amethyst foundation.
A beautiful memorial in a wonderful location. Lots of information about Terry's journey and very touching for everyone who reads it. The park is fairly clean and well maintained. Lots of parking available for no charge. It wasn't crowded so it was a great chance to take some time and appreciate all his affords and think about his journey.

An absolute gem in Thunderbay to visit.. The monument and the historic center is a great place for students to visit.the place is beautiful and well maintained, informative. The location great and there is spectacular view of the lake superior from here. Depending on the time of the day and the weather, the view from here is different. However it is guaranteed that it is always breathtaking.

So glad I was able to stop and visit this memorial to Terry Fox. Had wanted to do that for a long time. Lovely spot, easy parking, and beautiful views. There is no fee.
Its M — Google review
It was simply breathtaking to witness the summation of such a compelling part of Canadain history immortalized and preserved for generations to come. The view from the lookout/memorial will take your breath away. The sculpture of Mr. Fox beautifully captures the anguish and raw emotion that Terry was feeling during his trek. It serves to remind visitors that there is no limit to how resilient the human spirit is, and that our drive and ambition can inspire others to advocate for the good left in the world. We wandered inside the visitors center looking for souvenirs, and we were pleased to learn that the Fox family did not want to monetize Terry's efforts and prefers to not make any kind of profit from the memorial. I considered myself lucky to be able to witness the spot with Terry stopped and then stand in the shadow of his memorial.
Carlin S — Google review
What an emotional place. It is very well done. Terry is the greatest athlete to have ever lived. Forget Gretzky and Brady and Jordan. This guy ran a marathon every day on 1 leg and has raised billions for cancer research. My lord. What a legend.

I think this is the best place in Thunder Bay. Magnificent lake superior view with the sleeping giant. Best place to spent an evening with family here. Even though the lake was little frozen in May but the soothing cold breeze from the lake feels really good. I really enjoyed the evening walk with my family. Lots of parking and portable washrooms.

Hillcrest Park is a beautiful and well-maintained park that honors the Lake Superior Regiment, established before Canada's confederation in 1867. The park boasts vibrant Sunken Gardens, stunning views of Thunder Bay's waterfront and the Sleeping Giant, a WWII memorial, and a playground for children. It is known for having the best view in town where visitors can climb stairs or relax on benches.
Beautiful scenic view. In my case, I saw several large ships, and a docked cruise ship. I knew lake superior cruises were a thing, but I didn't realize the size of the ships used. It was a wonderful and illuminating experience. I posted a few photos so people can have a small taste of what they can expect. It's so much better in person!

Hillcrest Park is an absolute gem in Thunder Bay. The view of the Sleeping Giant from the park is breathtaking—pictures simply don’t do it justice. You have to see it in person to truly appreciate its beauty. The park itself is well-maintained and offers a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely stroll or just sitting and soaking in the scenery. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone in the area, whether you’re a local or a tourist. Highly recommended!

Great views in a historic park. Stairs. Parking. A bell A couple of cannons. Do not try to fire the cannons. Nice garden adjoining the park with lovely flowers. When viewed from space, the park shares certain features with Marilyn. Enjoy the park.

A spectacular view from Hillcrest Park of Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant Park. We visited the night of the Harvest Super Moon October 2024.
Patrick O — Google review
Beautiful and peaceful park. Offers stunning views of the city, the harbour, and the Sleeping Giant. The park is located in the north end of Thunder Bay, on a hill overlooking the lake. The park has a lot of green space, flowers, trees, and benches where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. The park also has a World War II memorial for the Lake Superior Regiment, which is a tribute to the soldiers who fought and died for Canada12. The park is well-maintained and clean, and has a playground for children and a gazebo for events. The park is open year-round, and is especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves change colour. The park is a great place to visit if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and appreciate the natural beauty of Thunder Bay. I highly recommend Hillcrest Park to anyone who loves parks and views. It is one of the best attractions in Thunder Bay and a must-see for visitors.

Hillcrest park is dedicated to the Lake Superior Regiment whose history predates Canada’s confederation in 1867. It has beautiful and very well kept gardens, a play area for children, a memorial the the Lake Superior Regiment (Motor) it has a commanding view of the Sleeping Giant and Thunder Bays Waterfront. We enjoyed our time walking in this beautiful park.

It's my favorite park in town! I love how it is set up, with a variety of things all the way along the park. It's long and narrow. It's great for kids you start at the playground, move on to the cannons and tank. Take a walk and play on the hill, move to the flag. Walk some more and discover the bell, then cap it off with the big long slide. It's like an adventure. They love it. It's always well maintained. It's busy but never crowded and there's lots of parking. Also the best spot in town to watch the fireworks.

Fort William Historical Park

Historical place museum
Sights & Landmarks
Fort William Historical Park, established in 1973, is a faithful reconstruction of a 19th-century fur trading post and transportation hub. The living-history museum features 42 period buildings where costumed guides demonstrate tasks like blacksmithing, fur processing, canoe building, and carpentry. Additionally, visitors can explore a reconstructed Ojibwa village and farmstead to experience life as it was in the past.
We went for the private guided tour as we were 2 days earlier before the Park is fully open to the public. We were a little bumped but the amazing tour guide George was super passionate and informative, he explained the history to us part by part and patiently answered all our questions enthusiastically. Super recommended! It's definitely the best guided tour and a tremendous experience I ever had and thanks for giving us such great memories full of historical information.
Sinyee L — Google review
Our experience at Fort William was truly exceptional. From the moment I reached out to ask if our family could enjoy a private tour—similar to those offered to school groups, complete with musket and cannon demonstrations and canoeing—they went above and beyond to accommodate us. From the warm welcome at check-in to the moment we drove out of the parking lot, every part of our visit was unforgettable. We not only had a fantastic time, but we also learned so much along the way. The entire staff was knowledgeable, engaging, and incredibly helpful. It was, without a doubt, one of the most memorable experiences of our trip to Canada. A heartfelt thank you to the Fort William team for making our visit so special!
Caryn S — Google review
Noah was our amazing tour guide & was beyond excellent. He did great in character as Jean Baptiste (?) and did a really great job on the questions and answers. We visited several of the buildings and then did self-guide through any of the other buildings that were open including the garden and animal area. Both children and adults would love this tour. There were two French tours and several English (see photo). They also have a campground that is a pretty open area with cell service & no mosquitoes.
Susan T — Google review
What a wonderful experience and learning opportunity. We took the walking tour and everybody kept in character. The characters were all very well spoken. And it is a wonderful way to learn about canada's past. This is a family event with fun for all from petting the farm animals to seeing how people lived back then.
Kareen T — Google review
A very unique experience. We got to see cannon fire and old gun fire. There were also people acting the part as if old hunters and gatherers just came from collecting animal hides. It is very historically informative and a very cool spot to spend a few hours in. Honestly a must visit.
Soban — Google review
Fort William is a great experience. September is cooler with easier access. We had excellent service with a shuttle ride to the park entrance. It's my favorite tour when going up to Thunder Bay.

Awesome historical site. Complete with reenactment and very engaging staff. Highly recommend! A different kind of fort, not really military primarily trading post. A must see on your trip to northern Ontario.

Well built attraction with immersion learning enabled with actors in character wearing period clothing to explain how things were. Actually pretty impressed by the extensive build of this rebuilt fort to explain Canada's roots.

Rangers very helpful and friendly. Convenient store reasonably supplied. Even live music on the deck! Clean washrooms. Excellent docking space. Wildlife everywhere!
Bob B — Google review
Nice visitor center! They have everything you need here: merchandise, stamps, maps, and info from awesome park rangers. They don't accept cash, though, which is pretty annoying. They gave us a "promise to pay" for when we got back to Port and had cell service to pay online. There is a great restroom building up the road from the visitor center that has showers. There is a cafe and gift store up from the restrooms that has some additional gifts, pre made sandwiches, drinks, and snacks. All priced well, surprisingly. Super helpful staff as well.
Brandon D — Google review
Definitely remote! If you're coming for a day trip on the ferry you will want to have a game plan in place as there is a lot to see and not a lot of time! The rangers do a few talks/walks as free activities to learn about the park and there are a few trails nearby that can get you into the back country quickly. Just be sure to watch the time, if you get too far you might be doing some cross country style running to get back to the boat in time.
Greg K — Google review
This is a great information center for Isle Royale. It's a very pretty building inside and the walls are lined with information on Isle Royale history, animals (like a moose skeleton) and plants. The rangers are really helpful and informative. They sell some souvenirs like post cards, magnets, and maps.
Zachariah R — Google review
The rangers are well organized upon arrival of a boat. The process of checking in and getting a permit moved efficiently and quickly. The visitor center has some neat interpretive exhibits as well. The setting in Windigo is stunning and it is one of the most pleasant places on the island.
Ken L — Google review
Best rangers ive ever came across in a NP. The VC doesn't have food thays the store but lots of great educational info and gear. Carve some time out to look around
Stephen S — Google review
Our experience in Windego was awesome! Arriving on the island via the seaplane, we had our orientation here. Our guide (Chad I believe) was great! Hilarious yet extremely informative! And paying honor to the Chippewa Indians who used to call Isle Royale home by flying their flag next to the American Flag is awesome!
Jeff L — Google review
It was essentially closed, just open long enough to check in the new arrivals. Closed for season when we left the next day. The ranger was friendly and helpful.

Farms
Thunder Oak Cheese Farm is a family-owned farm in Thunder Bay that specializes in producing a wide variety of locally made Gouda cheeses. Visitors can sample different flavors before making a purchase, and the prices are reasonable. In addition to Gouda, the farm offers fresh cheese curds and homemade bakery items. The store also features imported Dutch food items, including gluten-free options for stroopwaffles.
Cheese shop is no longer on the actual farm, but is nearby on the same road. Awesome views across the fields. The shop is large and spacious and full of... yes, cheese. No Monty Python cheese shop gags here. Beautiful Dutch style gouda of every type. And cheese curds so fresh they squeek. If you are a cheese afficionado then Thunder Oak Cheese farm is the place to be. If you time your trip appropriately, then you may arrive in time to see the days harvest being picked right off the vine.
William A — Google review
I got some real Gouda cheese. I absolutely love the product. Customer service was homey, and well done, answered all my questions on this. Being lactose free, it is a cheese I grew up with and tolerate well. I am pleased that any over quota milk production is going into a lost art. Well worth the drive and the visit.
Charlene R — Google review
We were recommended to visit Thunder Oak Cheese Farm by some friends when planning our trip to Thunder Bay, and we're blown away!! The family owned farm specializes in Gouda. A particular standout is their Gouda cheese curds, which can be tried at several restaurants around the region, or bought in a bag at the store. We got a bag of Garlic curds and snacked on them over a few days. I'm presently trying to find out if I can ship more home to Toronto! There are a variety of flavors and ages of Gouda for you to choose from in the shop! We were also pleasantly surprised that there was a sampler box to pick up with pre-cut cubes of a variety of their cheeses! They carry products inside from several other local business including coffee beans, candy, dried meat and more! Well worth going out of your way for, and a MUST GO for any cheese enthusiast!
Filip H — Google review
We stopped here on vacation because... cheese! You must get the cheese curds! Bonus if they are still warm from packing. Squeaky and flavorful. It's a great snack. They have excellent Gouda. We purchased the extra old age gouda and the Swiss. The people are super friendly! Its neat to watch the cheese making process from multiple windows in the shop. They have other Dutch items there along with local Canada syrup and other things from the area. It's a great place to stop and check out. Not far from Thunder Bay!
Vanessa M — Google review
It's amazing this kind of farm, you can find all types of cheese there and Mon, Wed and Friday you can take a tour inside and see how they make the cheese. We always try to support local farms and this one is unbelievable, truly recommend is you are coming to thunder bay or if you are living here you have to come and see this wonderful place ps: service is fantastic
Mauro M — Google review
A wonderful little shop of Dutch treats. We usually stop by on our way out to camp or on our way back into town to grab some delicious Gouda and treats.
Andrea L — Google review
Simple shop connected to the cheese storage facility. Gouda in a wide variety of flavors and sizes. Store also has a variety of Dutch treats and local foods like honey, sausages and fudge. While brochure promised tasting availability it is cancelled during COVID-19…

I haven't been to Niagara Falls, but Kakabeka Falls will satisfy my wow factor if I never make it to Niagara. The grounds are kept up extremely well, and various views of the Falls are accessible via boardwalks and a bridge. Highly recommended!

Beautiful falls. Good spot to take pictures and enjoy nature.
Shajahan C — Google review
Nice park, accessible trails. Good views of falls, but falls can only be seen from top level- meaning you can't walk down to the bottom of the falls to see that view. Makes for easier walking, not many stairs.

Beautiful falls! Stayed camping here one night, but should have stayed longer! Bathrooms were very clean all over the park and walking trails were really beautiful. The first site we went to (the one we originally reserved) was slanted and not suitable for a tent. The main office was very helpful and allowed us to switch no problem to one that was not already reserved. The sites were very clean and beautiful!

Kakabeka Falls was one of the highlights of my trip from Winnipeg to Toronto. It’s just a short drive from Thunder Bay, and I was honestly surprised to find such a beautiful waterfall so close to the city. Totally worth a stop! There’s a small entrance fee, but it’s worth it. Make sure to check out both sides of the falls—the view from the other side is even better. The volume of water is incredible, and it’s just a really nice spot to visit. Definitely recommend it!

Park
Grand Portage State Park, situated in the northeastern part of Minnesota, is a stunning 278-acre park that offers breathtaking views of nature. The park boasts a diverse flora including quaking aspen, paper birch, eastern white pine, and more. Visitors may encounter various wildlife species such as moose, white-tailed deer, black bear, and river otter. One of the main attractions is High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Minnesota.
Underrated little State Park tucked away up in the beautiful northeast of Minnesota. Also, home to Minnesotas highest waterfall! “High Falls”. Very easy walk from the welcome center/ park office to go see the falls. Just a little over a mile round trip. And you don’t need any permits for this park!
Jon R — Google review
Home to the tallest waterfall in MN it's a long drive but I think it's worth it. The drive alone is beautiful. For those interested there is a small museum here but no camp ground. The walk to the falls is only about a .25 mile and it's all paved. For fun you can take a trail that goes behind the falls but it's not for the faint of heart it's a steep climb and not as well cleared compared to the other trails but you get to see the summit marker. Happy trails!
Greenthor3 — Google review
In August 2025, we visited the Grand Portage State Park in Grand Portage, Minnesota. This is a beautiful state park and it contains the highest waterfall in all of Minnesota. The hike to the waterfall is on a paved trail, and there are a couple of sidetrails to see the Pigeon River rapids. Canada is on the other side of the Pigeon River. There is an elevated boardwalk going up to the Falls, and this boardwalk accommodates wheelchairs. This was an amazing and memorable place to experience.
John C — Google review
Beautiful, well maintained park. Free parking and entry, and no permit required. The hiking trail follows the pigeon river, so you are constantly right against the U.S.-Canada border, which is very cool. The river is beautiful and the High falls is amazing (it’s a lot higher than the picture makes it look).
Logan F — Google review
Take a trip up north. Visit MN tallest waterfall, see across into Canada, envision the logging that went on and the beautiful sights. This is a paved walked to the falls, benches to sit on and a visitor center. Other hiking is also available. Pack a lunch and enjoy.

Beautifully maintained trails. Very friendly and accommodating to all sorts of visitors, handicapped, young, old, ebicycles, bicycles, friends. Because they are very close to the Canadian border they do exchange rates. Local businesses and restaurants serve, or sell, some area items like pure maple syrup, French fry poutine, locally harvested wild rice, honey, jerky,etc.. it was well worth our 6+ hour drive north, including a stop at Betty's Pies on the way back.

Nice paved 1 mi hike to/from High Falls with great views of the falls. Nice clean restrooms and visitor center.

Historical landmark
Grand Portage National Monument, located in Grand Portage, Minnesota, is a National Park Service site that showcases the history of the North West Company fur trade. The monument features a reconstructed depot and an 8.5-mile portage trail to Fort Charlotte, bypassing waterfalls and rapids on the Pigeon River. It preserves Anishinaabeg Ojibwe heritage and offers insights into the area's fur trade activity.
We visited Grand Portage With 6 adults and 5 kiddos. Our 3 youngest kiddos were so wonderfully greeted by volunteer Karen who introduced them to the Junior Ranger program. Her enthusiasm and warm welcome were exemplary and are what national parks are all about. Our girls were excited to complete all of the items in the workbook and upon returning to the main building, they were inducted as Junior Rangers by Karen and it was the sweetest “ceremony”. She truly represents the good in humanity and someone we were so happy to have involved with our children on the trip. She even told us they made her day, when she truly made ours. 🩵🏔️🛶 Thanks for all of the park rangers and volunteers that keep our national parks, their history and their excitement alive. - With the kindest of regards, the Acevedo & extended families

🏞️ Hidden Gem Alert: Grand Portage National Monument 💫 We stumbled upon this spot and were completely blown away — why aren’t more people talking about this place?! 🤯 ✅ Incredible history & artifacts ✅ Beautiful lakeside setting ✅ Passionate guides full of fascinating stories ✅ And best of all… it’s FREE (donations welcome)! It felt like a private tour through time — no crowds, just rich history and peaceful views. If you’re heading up the North Shore, don’t miss this underrated gem. You’ll be glad you stopped. 🌲📜✨

Unfortunately, again, the Visitor Center was closed. Due to no fault of their own but, due to the government shutdown. We were still able to walk the Village. Gorgeous location!

We had a lovely time visiting the GP National Monument in early June. Karen was amazing in the heritage center. She engaged our kids and later swore them in as junior rangers. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the fur trade and North West Company Depot. We also had fun walking and exploring outside the wall on the shore. It's a must see when visiting the North Shore!

We really enjoyed this stop on our trip. Great view into how the native Americans lived. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Kids completed the Jr Ranger booklet and learned a lot and collected another badge. Great views. Super informative.

We did not know what to expect. We ended up staying 5 hours. Better than other historical sites where we have paid for tours! We can not wait to bring our young grandchildren back. We were not expecting so many artifacts from the late 1700's. And lots of hands on artifacts. What impressed us the most is the positive/balanced interpretation in the video. It was not all about the evil Europeans taking over Native American lands.

Very nice small museum and fur trader post replica/reenactment. Very informational and interactive. They have several interpreters/reencators onsite and are passionate about teaching about the local history. We'll taken care of property.

Unique experience in MN with Linda and her amazing huskies! January 2025 Absolutely amazing experience being out in nature in this beautiful part of the world, dog sledding with the best behaved and best temperament (and gorgeous!) huskies. The trail was spectacular, going through boreal forests and even the most northerly stand of maple trees in USA! Linda and Natalie (our mushers) were fantastic, highly experienced and knowledgeable about the huskies and the forest environment. We got to interact with the huskies after the trip, which was a lot of fun! Thoroughly recommend Points Unknown for a very unique experience.
Jacinta B — Google review
We just had a wonderful dog sledding experience! There were 4 of us and they took us individually in sleds. The dogs are amazing and Linda the owner very informative. This was a first for me and I loved it I appreciate all the work that goes into this endeavor and the love she shows for her dogs! You don’t want to miss this opportunity! Thank you Linda and crew!
Shelley P — Google review
My family of 4 stayed in the guest suite and did the half day dogsledding experience. The suite was beautiful and clean. (More detailed review on Air BnB.) Linda was kind and responsive, but gave us our privacy as well. The dogsled adventure was a unique and educational experience. Our 13 and 16 year old really enjoyed learning about, interacting with, and caring for the dogs in addition to our sled ride. Natalie was also wonderful and full of info about the trail.
Vicki K — Google review
My husband and I had an incredible time dog sledding! From start to finish, the service was exceptional—our guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure we felt comfortable throughout the entire adventure. The dogs were not only adorable but also so well-trained and eager to run, making the experience all the more special. The beautiful outdoor scenery added to the excitement, and it truly felt like we were part of a unique, unforgettable adventure. Highly recommend this experience for anyone looking to connect with nature and meet some lovable dogs!

Excellent Air BnB! Very clean, very comfortable beds. The flannel sheets were a nice touch. The house rules are straight forward, sensible, and easy to follow. The grounds are beautiful. Interacting with the dogs was an awesome way to start our day of adventuring. I will be visiting again next time I'm in MN.

Points Unknown is one of the most professional, educational and well-run kennels you will find anywhere in the country. Linda's deep care for the animals' health and happiness are apparent in every step she takes to make the kennel as welcoming and comfortable as possible for people and dogs alike. The sled adventures are spectacularly beautiful and the wilderness around Points Unknown is perfect for summer activities and canoeing as well. Cannot recommend enough!

Linda is a great hostess! We stayed in one of her cabins, (no electric, no running water) it was clean, inviting, and a wonderful experience. Points Unknown is known for sled dogs, hiking, and much more. We met and helped feed the dogs...it was a great time. We look forward to returning that in the future.

We had a wonderful experience. Linda & her crew did an amazing job! Kenna & Annabelle excellent mushers. The dogs are beautiful & well cared for - very friendly & sweet too. We enjoyed our playtime time with the pups & dogs. So fun to learn how to harness the dogs to the sled. Would highly recommend this for a couple or family outing!

Beautiful park. Campgrounds were clean and easy to navigate with camper. Shower house was very clean as well. Close to great hiking trails, Devil’s Kettle is an absolute must see!

This is an underrated park! There's quite a few stairs (maybe around 200?) to get to the falls, but the trails are well maintained. This is also a great place to camp! The sites are spacious and spread out, and the bathroom facilities are well kept. There's dumpsters and recycling not too far away from any of the sites. Here are pictures from sites 20 and 21!

I only did the Devils Kettle Waterfall hike. I found it to be lovely and peaceful. I went later in the day around dinner time. But the waterfall was beautiful and flowing!

A well maintained park with beautiful hiking trails, gorgeous waterfalls, and trout fishing. The park itself is about 15 minutes north of Grand Marais, which make it fantastic for a little outting. Trails were well maintained, straightforward, and pretty accessible.

One of my favorite parks and worth every step to see Devil's Kettle. I make sure to make time if I'm this far north, to stop in and enjoy the uniqueness of this park.

Arrived early in the morning but was running out of parking spaces quickly, a short hike from the parking lot takes you to Devil's Kettle. Sign and wifi to buy (daily) parking pass if you haven't before.

A beautiful 2 mile hike along a powerful river with many rapids and 2 waterfalls. The paths are predominantly very well maintained and wider than most. Great signage and maps along the way. There are some steps, but do not let them be a deterent. The pay off is worth it. The hike took us about 90 minutes total. And we stopped a couple of times. We started at 9:30 am and 2 cars in the parking lot, and ended at 11 am there were 20+. Glad we went earlier! Great clean rest room too! You may want to pay the $7 daily parking fee b4 you get there online.

Turning off the gunflint trail towards Clearwater outfitters, the trailhead is two miles in. The hike itself is very short, not much more than a half mile. Lots of steps to get to some great views. I wouldn’t make a trip just for this hike, but if you’re in the area it’s quick and worth the stop.

Ken L — Google review
It is a very short hike to a beautiful view. From the North Shore, it is questionable if this is worth the drive, but if you’re relatively close it is a must visit. There is also a dirt road for the last stretch of the drive to get there, so be prepared for that.

Mid may & still frozen. Natural beauty at the top of this cliff! Along the back side of the loop we found nesting or a path Moose had taken. We had to play hopscotch to dodge their piles of land mines but it was neat to see the path they took. Wish we could’ve gotten to see them, at a great distance of course😊

When in Grand Marais, don't miss out on Sivertson Gallery, a must-visit shopping destination that has been showcasing art for over 40 years. Originally founded to exhibit the work of Howard Sivertson, it has since expanded to feature a diverse range of local and regional artists as well as Inuit creators. The friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere make browsing through the gallery's collection of paintings, prints, jewelry, blown glass, and home decor a delightful experience.
Cute gallery! Lots of incredible work from very talented artists and staff were friendly! Fun place to peruse while visiting up North!

We visited Grand Marais on numerous occasions when we had family in the area. As we moved furniture around here in our home in South Carolina, we had a bare space begging for another Rick Allen Trapper's Daughter print. Thank you, Ashley Sivertson, for helping us out with the order, framing, and shipping. The beautifully framed print arrived safe and sound.

This amazing store never fails. I find the most beautiful items. The staff is friendly, upbeat and have great senses of humor. The store is a browsers paradise with so many eye catching delights to look at. I have purchased several prints and items from this establishment and years later still enjoy looking at them. Whether jewelry, art works, or home decor items if you love unique things this is the place to go. If I were asked what is one place not to miss in Grand Marais MN this would be the place. It allows me to take a piece of northern MN home with me.

Grand Marais Lighthouse

Lighthouses
The Grand Marais Lighthouse, a majestic tower with a rear range light, stands as a prominent attraction in Minnesota's North Shore. Initially established in 1879 for harbor improvements at Grand Marais, the lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the picturesque sea. Visitors can take an easy one-mile stroll from town to reach the lighthouse and Artists Point, known for inspiring artists with its scenic beauty. While the path may seem straightforward at first, it can be longer and uneven, requiring caution.
Scenic, Peaceful, and a Little Adventure! Gorgeous views of the lake all the way out to the lighthouse. You can walk the main cement path or, if the water's low and waves aren’t crashing, take the rocky edge for a little adventure. Either way, it’s fun and relaxing walking.
Peter V — Google review
So we came here while we were walking around Grand Marais. They have really clean porta Johns right by the coast guard house here and parking right before that. There is a large rock wall you can follow to the light house. There is a bunch of cool photo opportunities on this walk as you can see. There is a beach at the end with really great skipping rocks. There is another little area with trees and rocks to explore you will like. Ultimately this is a great area and you will enjoy this walk and the breeze off of the lake!
Keith W — Google review
This is a very picturesque lighthouse. To get to the lighthouse there are uneven areas so watch your footing and narrow pathways where you'll want to walk single file and be careful when walking past others coming in the opposite direction. Not handicap accessible. There is a big parking lot with free parking or park on the street by the shops and walk down.
Roberta P — Google review
Carefully make your way across the narrow path leading to the lighthouse for a great view of both the harbor and the lake
D C — Google review
So glad we made the visit!! It was such a cool adventurous walk for us and the pups! There's lots of rocks and uneven ground, along with a narrow pathway to get to the lighthouse. But we had a great time hopping around and letting the pup explore. Just FYI, if older, or young be mindful of.... couldn't bring a stroller or anything like that.

Cascade River State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Waterfalls abound at this green, volcanic-rock setting with hiking, cross-country skiing & camping.
This park is excellent, almost a secret quiet gem. It's probably my second favorite park on the North Shore. Great views really throughout of the lake and river. Great trails that connect with Superior National Forest. Awesome day use area and campground. One of the best hikes on both sides of the river to see the falls, rapids, and cliffs. It is on the smaller side and gets overlooked being farther north. So you get the all the North Shore experiences with none of the crowds of Gooseberry or Tettegouche.
Wyatt P — Google review
One of the most beautiful parks in MN. Come for the river and stay for the view of Lake Superior. Some of the best trails I've seen in a state park. You can follow the river for miles or you can make a climb up one of the peaks.
Greenthor3 — Google review
A beautiful park with sights, fresh pine scent and very well kept. We have enjoyed the many spots along the river to see the cascades, and the trails are all great. Not a difficult hike and could come back time and time again. Lots of great loops and spur trails with access to incredible sights! And a big shout out to the gift shop—lots of great souvenirs and guide books there.
Kelsey K — Google review
Oh my! What a beautiful Minnesota State Park! Beautiful hikes to the falls at Cascade river, a short hike across the highway to Lake Superior, and excellent facilities if staying at the campground with warm showers and clean restrooms! Besides the noisy crow that woke us up in the early morning it was a perfect few days hiking and nights camping! We enjoyed a tough hike up to Lookout point with great views of the Superior National Forest! Bring your bug spray up there at the summit. Otherwise the bugs were not bad at all at the campsite in early June 2025. Firewood can be purchased at the main building or at the Campground host site for 8 dollars/bundle. Cash or on the app. Just a short 15 minute drive up to the town of Grand Marais for forgotten essentials, World's Best Donuts, lunch, and seeing the lighthouse.
Jackie C — Google review
Great short trail from either the parking lot from Hwy 61 or if you go into the park. The trails connect. Multiple overlooks. Cascade Falls is appropriately named with several connected falls. Trail is beginner level and has stairs. If you go into the park by car, you will pay $7 for a permit that is good all day at all state parks. The trail from inside the park is longer and has more stairs, but a better hiking experience.
Brooke F — Google review
This trail is amazing. We stopped on a whim between leaving Grand marais and headed to two harbors. We just stopped to explore something new as we had time before our check in. Wow, is all I can say. We have done gooseberry and baptism fall annually and this trail was way above for active water. It was July of 2025, there was a lot of water this year so it made for very active falls. The river was flowing through deep carved out rocks with no way to get near the river itself like you can at the other 2 trails. However the beauty and peace of this hike was amazing. I am not sure if this one has a s much traffic as others as it was Monday afternoon. We did a loop that was I think about 2 miles total. Kids stopped into the ranger station and got scavenger hunt sheets and at 9 and 12 were engaged the entire trail. We were there for over 2 hours walking and hiking and looking for scavenger hunt items. They even offer small prizes, posters and postcard of mn animal. The hike as we got away from the river was beautiful. The trail was fairly easy as ypu got away from the river it was a pretty steady incline and declines. The sad part for me was no lady slipper. I was told by park attendant that they were in bloom and had 4 off the trail. I have always wanted to see one in real life in its natural habitat as a orchid lover and living in MN all my life. The worker said someone dug them up in the last 24 hrs... this being super disappointing. To have the boldness and selfishness to dig up a beautiful flower that is protected by law in MN state grounds for yourself. People need to stop destroying the state parks and start repeating the environment around you. We do not want to see your initials on a tree or look at bark you peeled off that kills these beautiful trees. Sorry soap box moment. This is a great trail well worth the journey we will definitely make the trip to it next time we are up.
Brandon K — Google review
Fabulous waterfalls!! My goodness, the beauty! And it looks like they have trails, too. Lots of stairs depending on how many waterfalls you want to view...
Scott F — Google review
It’s a nice park but the campsites are small, my tt is 24’ and that’s about as long as most sites would fit based on observation. Mn state campgrounds are a little spendy, there seems to be a fee for everything, reservation fee, talk to a person for reservation higher fee, taxes, site fee, $29 a night no hookups. Still a nice campground.

Lutsen Mountains is a winter sports area with over 90 trails spread across four mountains, featuring modern chair lifts, lodging, and dining options. Nestled in Cook County, it offers dramatic mountainous terrain and stunning views of Lake Superior. Visitors can partake in activities such as hiking, biking, sightseeing, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, and snowboarding.
Can’t beat Lutsen for an easy ski vacation that actually feels like a mountain getaway. They have a lot of terrain, and the best views of Lake Superior. The kids really love the Gondola ride, and I enjoy fast laps on the high speed 6 packs to get my ski vertical fix! We have had season passes for 4 years now and regularly come up from the Minneapolis area in the winter. I’d much rather drive with all the family’s ski equipment on a regular basis to Lutsen because of how easy it is and the price when you have a season passes. Not saying ski trips out West aren’t great, they’re just not nearly as convenient and happen much less often.
Andrew S — Google review
This is worth checking out!! The alpine slide was soooo fun! All ages can do it :) the gondola had amazing views!! If you buy tickets in advance online you can sign waivers ahead of time!
Bailey P — Google review
We had a great time here for a few hours. Seems pretty pricey but also a pretty unique experience. We can go to an entire theme park at home for the price of the alpine slides here. But like I said pretty fun nonetheless. Be nice if they sold more snacks and such. We all just ate like a candy bar from the store.
Brandon P — Google review
We booked the Signature Gondola Experience at Lutsen Mountains to take in the fall colors, and it was such a fun way to spend a crisp autumn day! The experience included priority boarding, delicious cookies and bottled water, plus a free drink ticket to use once you reach the top. Such a nice touch that made the ride feel extra special. Even though the fall colors were just past peak, the views were still absolutely beautiful. The view of Lake Superior and the rolling hills made for an unforgettable ride. I’ll definitely be back next year; hopefully right at peak color to catch the vibrant red colors in all their glory. A must-do North Shore experience!
Kelsey B — Google review
This is a review of the summit express gondola ride during peak fall. Saturday we drove a total about 15 hours from Minneapolis to Lutsen just to ride the gondola and see the fall colors. We bought our tickets online a week in advance and yet we still had to wait in one line like everyone else. There is no separate line for those who buy their tickets online and the line can get pretty long. After waiting in line about a little over an hour the fun really began. Once on the gondola the views are amazing, it’s a smooth and scenic ride then you get off at the top of the mountain. You get to see beautiful views of Lake Superior and see the beautiful fall colors of the trees from the trails. The food wasn’t anything special, just a bunch of fried foods and quick bites which we decided to go without. I feel like overall I did have a good experience because I wanted to ride the gondola and I got some great pics. However, be patient, the lines can get pretty long, you may have to ride the gondola with a stranger unless you have a party of 4-5. If you have kids come prepared, the wait times can vary from 1.5 to 2 hours in the lines going up and down the mountain. Dogs are welcomed, there is overflow parking and they do not accept cash.
Markeda D — Google review
We did the gondola ride up to mount lutsen! The ride was great! Such pretty views and especially awesome at the top! It cost $35 per person to ride, which i thought was very expensive!
Susan C — Google review
Waited in line 30 minutes to buy 4 gondola tickets (2 adults, 2 kids), then have to wait in another line about an hour for our gondola. Gondola holds 8, so have to sit with strangers, which isn't horrible, but for $110 for tickets, we should have a choice. Gondolas were muggy and smelly. The ride does bring you way up to another "mountain" top with an amazing view of lake Superior and the fall colors, and an overpriced food and drink shack, but then again wait in line, to get back down. Total travel time in gondola (up and down) was about 10 minutes. 4 hours to drive up there, 2 hours of waiting in line, and a 10 minute ride, just doesn't seem worth it when you can just park up by the resort and hike for free and see the same trees and views.
Shawn B — Google review
This was our first time here and I was excited. Our room was nice and clean and the staff were great! In my opinion, the gondola ride was expensive and I thought we should have had a discount for the gondola and alpine slide since we were staying two nights. The restaurant at the top of the mountain was good but also on the expensive side. A lot of hiking options in the area. The pool and hot tub were great! The internet was cut off both nights at 10 pm. I thought it was odd. Not a lot of restaurants or food options in the area. We headed to Grand Marais for dinner.

Ok folks. Here it is. Sawbill is by far the easiest to work with, most cost efficient, and friendliest staff I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a customer of. I stayed in the campground the night before my trip and again 17 days later after my trip. The shower and shave after the trip brought me back to life. I snagged a pack of chips ahoy cookies and a half gallon of milk, then walked back to camp. Lit a fire, and devoured it. Everyone was so chill. I’ll be back in June then again in September. Do research if you want, but you won’t beat Sawbill. Great access point.
Long W — Google review
Excellent experience, well run oiled machine of workers putting in 14 hour days, living on premise, you can't go wrong with using Sawbill Outfitters. The owners, Claire and Dan Shirley, were super helpful and fast when we needed help with an air compressor and recommendation for fixing a flat tire, Cooter's Auto was outstanding. Showers are super clean and for $5 and $1 for a towel, a real bargain. They have top notch equipment -well thought out, lots of supplies including food and beverages. The launch site is an easy walk. Connected to a large National Forest campground also named after Sawbill lake, with walk in first come sites that each night we were there were available. I've read some reviews from the Campground and there was a group that complained about the Host there, no relation to Sawbill Outfitters, but having stayed in the Campground there is plenty of parking - a large parking lot so those people shouldn't have had an issue, plus with dogs off the leash - they had pitbulls, so it sounds to me they had the problem not the Host keeping order. Anyway, our group couldn't rave enough about our experience. Best,

Incredible staff, facilities, and adventure! We loved our first canoe backpacking trip from here (minus the portaging). I look forward to coming back in the future in better shape. We were very grateful to return to the outfitter to greet friendly faces as well as a nice shower. I’m no expert, but I think Sawbill is a great starting point for those looking to get into canoe backpacking. The lake is long and provides access to other beautiful spots. Lake Cherokee is worth the trek.

They were so helpful helping us get our permit switched around from another outfitter that closed earlier than we thought. They had a ton of things in the store for those last minute items you may have forgotten before heading out onto the water! Very friendly staff, and they seemed knowledgeable too! I hope to return to them one day!

Such an amazing staff here— each one a delight to talk to (special shout-out to Sawyer). There is a clear sense of collaboration among team members and a strong culture of kindness and customer service. They have exceptionally fair prices and so many services available— from outfitting to grocery items, showers to laundry facilities. This family must be exceptionally proud of their crew & their ongoing legacy of providing hospitality & guidance to fellow lovers of the wilderness.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. They were very helpful and genuinely nice people. We had to pull out early due to ill member in our party. Dan checked us out. He was very understanding and gave us tips for the next time. I highly recommend them for any camping or outfitters needs. Oh and their shower rooms are the best I have every had anywhere. A family can clean up in their own space. I was blown away.
Sheila M — Google review
Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Our group traveled a slightly less than recommended route the day after ice out last year and they were sure to ask us the right questions to make sure we were up for the task before sending us on our way. Pricing was very reasonable and they have most or all of the accommodations you’ll would need for a trip. 10/10 will choose Sawbill again.. and again and again.
Nick S — Google review
Came here with a group for a BCWA trip. The showers were clean and warm, with the camp group meeting our needs. Only thing that irked me was the store clerk asking if I needed anything when I was looking around, as if I were going to steal something. Otherwise, it wasn’t a bad experience.

Temperance River State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Vast lakefront park offers scenic river gorge trails & waterfalls, year-round camping & recreation.
Overall, I would say this is the best park on the North Shore and a contender for the best in the state. The waterfalls are awesome, with great trails and access around them. Numerous other excellent trails that connect with Superior National Forest. It has excellent overlooks, campgrounds, and day use area that are on the shores of Lake Superior. All packed into a smaller park. Plus, none of the crowds of Gooseberry and Tettegouche.
Wyatt P — Google review
Absolutely beautiful stop! The waterfalls are stunning and make for amazing photo ops, and the beach walkway along Lake Superior is perfect for a peaceful stroll. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs and burn some time with the family while traveling. Easy trails, fresh air, and scenic views—what more could you ask for?
Andrew — Google review
gorgeous state park- many options for access to Lake Superior, sandy beach outstretched across the lower campground sites (wasn’t able to reserve a campsite here- but if they are available, definitely worth booking!), various trails & waterfalls to hike near, bathrooms were clean & well maintained. friendly park rangers as well!
Ella G — Google review
I would say Temperance River State Park is one of the best MN waterfall parks. Camping was great, the ranger was so helpful, the trails were amazing as well as the views!
Linda — Google review
Nice little hidden area that wasn't too crowded. We had fun going in the water to hunt for gates. Plenty of rocks to climb on or sit on. There are two porta potties at the top of the trail.
Christina L — Google review
Amazing gorge! We went after rain so the falls were rapid! People said the route doesn't matter but we recommend taking the trail on the right of the gorge. The left trail is very bushy and hard to hike up.
Esther M — Google review
Campsites with great view of lake Superior. The showers were very clean and well maintained. We did the upper falls trails which was great.
Roopashree V — Google review
We went towards the end of march and luckily stumbled upon the park on a snow day. Was so magical, felt like we were in Narnia. We didn’t make it all the way to upper falls sadly because one of our group members didn’t like the ice so we turned around after 45 minutes. I thought it was a perfect day. Definitely need to come back to see the other falls. Lots of parking availability and very peaceful.

George H. Crosby Manitou State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Scenic setting for viewing wildlife & waterfalls, plus challenging hike trails & secluded campsites.
Hike to the hiking club trail and they were not kidding when they said it was steep and challenging terrain. As well as the waterfall there are some incredible lookouts for Fall colors (although I was past the peak unfortunately). After a particularly challenging rock hopping I came to a bog and lay down in the sun and read for a while. No doubt this walk would be full of mosquitoes at other times of year.
Carrie W — Google review
Crosby Manitou is one of the most underrated state parks in Minnesota. Unlike some of the more crowded North Shore parks, this one offers a truly remote and wild experience. The trails are rugged and challenging, but that’s part of the appeal. Be ready for steep climbs, rocky terrain, and a serious workout. The Manitou River gorge is absolutely stunning, with waterfalls, rapids, and mossy cliffs all around. There are several backcountry campsites that are spaced out enough to give you a sense of real solitude. Benson Lake is also a great spot for a quiet break or overnight stay.
Benjin V — Google review
Hands down one of my top 3 favorite MN state parks. Extremely rustic & the trails are moderate-hard. There is limited cell service & all the camping spots available are hike-in only. This park is extremely underrated and deserves more love!
Jenaya P — Google review
We camped at site 4. Its a gross hike when humid and wet, but definitely worth it. When we got to our campsite the river view was amazing and very peaceful. Make sure to follow the map when getting to the site. Go left and not right or you will go down a rough path at first until you realize you need to turn around.
K D — Google review
Very nice backpacking and hiking to be had in this state park, all sites here are backpacking campsites. I was at site 14 and it was very nice and had a fire ring and you could fit 3 tents here and access down to the river was very easy there was also a toilet near camp. I believe just about every campsite has their own toilet for use. The manitou river trail is a nice trail lots of up and down hill, it is quite over grown and lots of fallen trees so be prepared to climb over some logs. Other than that its got some nice scenery.
Vincent — Google review
Good state park but the least favorite of our trip. 7 miles down a dirt road. The humpback trail was not very well maintained, would not recommend alone or with young children. Falls were nice but a challenge to get there the way we took.
Will K — Google review
We enjoyed walking around the lake on Benson Lake Trail along the wooden boardwalk. Stopped at Campsite #21. Campsite 21 was very spacious and private. Would like to try fishing for trout and splake. Many hiking trails to explore. Middle Trail to Cascade Waterfall along the Manitou River will be on our list for next time.
K H — Google review
Rustic park off the beaten path but we'll worth the stop. Great for a day trip this place is quiet and secluded. Excellent hiking trails kept in good shape. It is a rustic park so not much more than trails and hike in campsites. The scenery is awesome but this park get overlooked by everything else outdoors up the north shore.

Volcanic formed cliffs & birds of prey nesting site overlooking the lake in state park.
What a dramatic view. The cliff runs all along, so make sure you just don't walk straight out and miss the views going both ways. There were people rock climbing to the left if walk a little bit. This is a beautiful spot. We had no problem with parking in our class b van. We did ask someone who was driving down if there was room before we went up. Definitely recommend stopping and maybe taking a lunch.

Very nice views! The lake looks so bright and blue.
Olive T — Google review
Driving up to the top isn’t hard unless it’s busy. If you’re scared of narrow roads/steep hills definitely park at the bottom and walk. Very pretty at the top, i would not bring kids here due to no rails/just straight cliffs!
Kimmie S — Google review
A gorgeous place to go and visit. If you're going up north. You get to see the true breath of lake Superior, really fascinating. It is quite a steep drive to get up there. They have a lot of signs as you pull into the bottom parking lot for that reason. Was able to get up there with a crew cab truck that has a lock box. Probably about maximum size for the vehicles. Go touch some rocks and look at the beautiful views!
Glen M — Google review
A word of advice, park down by the road and walk up. There is a small parking lot at the top, but it is small and so many people drove up there it was a real traffic jam. Walk out onto the rocks to enjoy the view and maybe see some rock climbers.
Sharon M — Google review
If the gate is closed. Walk in. If the gate is open drive it. One lane road steep incline up. Use caution. Roughly 10 spots to park at the top. Shear drop off. Use caution again. Gorgeous view from the top.
Joel E — Google review
The view is incredible and definitely worth getting some pictures. I would say there isn’t a lot of parking at the top. I would also say if you have kids be very careful there is nothing stopping you from going over the edge.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Mainland Sea Caves

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Mainland Sea Caves in Algoma, Ontario offer a breathtaking winter wonderland experience. The towering waves of Lake Superior create stunning ice ridges and caves that are ideal for photography enthusiasts. However, visitors must bundle up in warm clothes and snowshoes to explore the caves. Due to climate change, these incredible natural formations could disappear within a few decades.
The hiking was up and down through the woods but nothing was too challenging. We went just past the bowl and turned around for a nice 6 mile hike. The views of some of the sea caves were astounding. There were also several nice benches to stop and catch your breath if needed. Parking was $5 and digital only, but took PayPal, Card, or venmo.
Dylan V — Google review
Nice there and back hike. None of the signs seem to agree on how long the trail is. It took me 13k steps to do it out to the end of the rock formations.
Daniel B — Google review
We went on a 2 1/2 hour boat tour of the islands. Able to see the caves, lighthouses, and the captain told us about each island. The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed it
Marilyn K — Google review
This was a very cool hike. We did a little over 4 miles for the view we got. Could have gone further if we wanted. I would come back again, most likely in the winter for a different perspective. There was plenty of spaces to park.
Zach E — Google review
It was a really fun hike. Bring water on your hike! The 1.8 miles took us about 3.5 hrs to hike, hang out, and hike back. If we would have packed food and water, we would have hiked further. We were carrying a toddler with us as well. $5 to park a regular vehicle. You have to scan the QR code and fill out the info. Pay by cc.

Breath taking views seeing them. We took a boat tour of all the Apostle Islands and the Sea Caves which do not disappoint the majestic views made by nature are truly magnificent. We were lucky to see a family of Eagles nest and soar off from the Island.

Meyer’s beach is absolutely gorgeous! Big stretch of beach and stairs to get down to it. Clean beach and clean water. You can hike out to the sea caves via trails. The trails are well maintained and a lot of them are a two plank boardwalk system! Definitely could spend a day here.

Beautiful hike. Nicest walking planks for the first mile I've ever seen!

We discovered this little beach area on Lake Superior last year, and decided to come back for a picnic this year and hike the trail down to the area above the sea caves. This is also the beach where the kayak companies launch from for their sea cave group exploration. So depending on where you setup, the area could be busy. After 5 pm on a summer night, this beach is peaceful and you can see beautiful sunsets!
Jennifer H — Google review
Camped at the new Mainland Campsite 2. The directions are not clear at all for getting to site 2 and 3 but we eventually found it. You can either walk down the first service raid that you come across on the main trail where you'll eventually see some signage or you can just walk north along the beach maybe 10-15 minutes until you see some signage. Beautiful spot!

This is an excellent place to spend a weekend. Kayaking, picnic, hiking, sea caves, and one of the most well groomed trails I've ever got to partake in. Parking is very very limited so get there early or prepare to park far away. Kayak and boat launch here. Safety first. We not only kayaked but got to hike these trails. Dog friendlyand very people. When you come to this place it's strictly for the nature. Enjoy it and leave nothing but ripples, and footprints.

We were very lucky to kayak on Saturday with fog. This made the Sea Caves adventure incredible. Jurassic Park vibes!!! We did tandem kayaking and went through the Caves. The next day we hiked the trail above the Sea Caves in a beautiful sunny day. The water was so blue and we stopped at the view points to take pictures and make really good memories! What a fantastic weekend. Really worth the drive to Bayfield for an extended long weekend.

Fantastic trip. I am not an experienced kayaker so I was a bit intimidated to do the overnight options. I am glad I went for it. It was an incredible experience. Our guides Mason and Tony were incredible. They made the trip fun, easy, and memorable. Great sights, food, conversations, campfires...I could go on and on. Thanks guys!

My husband and I did the full day kayak cave tour. The guides AJ & Megan were amazing and extremely knowledgeable. There were some crazy waves but they kept things calm and cool, which helped us feel safe. The lunch provided was delicious and exactly what we needed to refuel and continue on. We are excited to come back and do another tour.
Maddie S — Google review
I had a really fun time on the half day kayaking trip! The only suggestion i have is that I've only kayaked once and it was pretty tough as the waves were pretty high due to wind. Maybe add something on the website that sea kayaking is different than small lake or river kayaking as it seems a little more intense with the big waves which i would have liked to be warned about. Our guides were wonderful and very educational! I do wish we could have seen some more deep caves, but I'm assuming due to the waves/wind we couldn't. The length of the tour was good, we were just very tired on the way back!
Courtney B — Google review
We called ahead of our tour and spoke with Ellie, who was really helpful in providing us with detailed and accurate information. We saw it was supposed to rain the day we had scheduled to go kayaking, and Ellie was able to help us get the reservation changed to another day. Hunter helped us get set up with a tandem sit on top kayak to go out to Roman's Point, and showed us some tips and tricks on paddling and safety. Our second trip with them was the half day Meyers sea cave guided tour. Abby and Sam were fantastic and made the entire group feel comfortable and safe, gave plenty of time at each cave we could get inside, and showed the group a great time! Checking in with Azure was easy and she made sure we knew what to wear each day and what to expect. Highly recommend using this company if you want an adventure.

Great trip. Great guide Nancy Ann and gosh can't remember his name. But in my defense I was in tandem with Nancy. Very knowledgeable team. Calm day on the water. Canada smoke ruined the island views but the caves are amazing. Fun day. Definitely a great day drip.

Awesome paddling experience with our guides Charlie and Ian. Both were very personable and the trip was well organized. We got lucky with really nice weather so the paddle was easy and enjoyable. Highly recommend hiking the lakeshore trail before / after to experience both sides of these iconic caves.

We LOVED our three hour kayak adventure! Izzy and Mason were our guides and they did such a fantastic job. The building in Cornucopia had nice bathrooms and changing areas. The tour was doable even for older folks in our group, although by the end I think we were all a bit tired. 10/10 recommend.

Split Rock Lighthouse

Mentioned on

History museum
Sights & Landmarks
Guides dressed in period clothing offer tours of the Split Rock Lighthouse and keeper's home, showcasing aspects of 1920s life. The lighthouse was constructed after a devastating gale in 1905 caused numerous shipwrecks, and it has become one of Minnesota's most iconic landmarks since its opening in 1910. Today, the lighthouse has been restored to reflect its original appearance from the 1920s and features a historical museum.
We loved our time here. Absolutely beautiful lighthouse. There was a line after we bought tickets, we waited about 15 min or so to take our turn to climb. Very crowded at the top, slightly claustrophobic. The lady at the top did a nice, short, informative presentation. Nice gift shop and grounds. Unfortunately it is under construction so not as great pictures as we’d of liked but nice they’re keeping it up.
Angel S — Google review
Stunning, beautiful...and under construction. What can I say that others haven't? 1. Visit on a weekday when the weather ain't all that great. We had the top of the lighthouse all to ourselves. No wait! 2. Under construction doesn't mean there's nothing to see. Lighthouse was open as was one of the keeper's houses (All the others were closed). They had a mouth-watering vegetable soup boiling on the wood stove. 3. Hit up the Visitor Center and gift shop. Buy the souvenirs. 4. Take your time and enjoy. Well done Minnesota.
Castercamber — Google review
Beautiful lighthouse with much construction around it. Don't wait to hear the fog horn, extremely quiet and not really sure what the point of it is. Nice museum. Friendly and helpful staff. You can go in the tower for $15 on a self guided tour, you can go into the wick room but not into the lamp room. Completely worth the visit just for the unique mechanics and watching it actually run. Don't miss the walk down the steps to the lake to see an absolute stunning view of the light.
Anna S — Google review
This lighthouse was amazing. It was the 115th birthday of the lighthouse! I was coming from Duluth, so it was a bit of a trek, but so worth it for the views alone. It was cool not only to walk through the lighthouse, but also see the keepers house next to it. The house included photos of the families and how they lived. The museum was great too. Gave some more history including some of the shipwrecks nearby. Cool video on the one that is still lying on the floor bed of the lake a stones throw away. I could have spent hours just enjoying the views from the lighthouse. They had some trails nearby to explore as well.
TMK — Google review
I can't say enough amazing things about Split Rock Lighthouse. For our family of three, we paid $35, with my husbands military discount. We were able to tour the lighthouse, fog horn house, and the keepers home. I was in awe of it all. The view from the lighthouse was absolutely breathtaking. All the staff was amazing and so helpful. I highly recommend!!
Jeanine H — Google review
Split Rock Lighthouse is a beautifully preserved and thoughtfully curated destination that offers a glimpse into Minnesota’s maritime history. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the care and attention that went into maintaining this iconic site. The visitor experience begins with a well-produced 20-minute introduction video that provides context about the lighthouse’s history and the treacherous waters of Lake Superior. What’s remarkable is that even young kids—like my 4-year-old and nephews—were captivated by the film, which is no small feat. The small museum exhibit is equally impressive, showcasing artifacts, stories, and interactive elements that bring the history of the lighthouse keepers and shipwrecks to life. The walk up to the lighthouse rewards you with breathtaking views of Lake Superior, but in my opinion, the most stunning view is from the beach below. From that vantage point, you can take in the full beauty of the lighthouse perched high on the cliff, framed by the endless blue of the lake. It’s a scene that feels almost unreal. Split Rock Lighthouse is a must-visit spot if you’re exploring Minnesota’s North Shore. The mix of history, natural beauty, and thoughtful presentation makes it a memorable stop for visitors of all ages.
Hoshun L — Google review
Fascinating to read about the history of this place, but more interesting to read about engineering of lighthouse technology and seeing the impressive lens that focuses the beam of light You can visit the lighthouse or take a tour to actually go inside. You can also hike to the nearby state park which has some nice attractions in its own right Lots of spots to view the lighthouse, and they are building some new platforms also so look for some new additions in the future
Hank Z — Google review
Visiting Split Rock Lighthouse is one of those Minnesota bucket-list experiences that completely lives up to the hype. Perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the North Shore of Lake Superior, it’s both breathtaking and full of history. We started our visit with the short film in the visitor center. I highly recommend not skipping it, it really sets the stage for what life was like here in the early 1900s, and how important the lighthouse was for ships navigating the often-treacherous waters of Lake Superior. It made me appreciate everything we saw afterward. From there, we explored the lightkeeper’s house, which has been restored beautifully. Walking through it feels like stepping back in time, with period furnishings and details that give you a glimpse of daily life for the families who lived and worked here. A worker was baking bread in the old wood oven on a cold September day. We also checked out the fog signal building — and wow, standing inside where those giant horns used to blast across the lake makes you imagine just how powerful (and loud!) it must have been during storms.Plus for the poor lighthouse workers! Of course, the star of the show is the lighthouse itself. Climbing up and stepping inside gave us amazing views of the lake and shoreline. The vantage point is stunning, and it’s easy to see why this spot is so iconic in Minnesota. After exploring the historic site, we hiked around Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. The trails wind through the rocky shoreline, giving you different perspectives of the lighthouse perched high on the cliff. It’s the kind of place where you can’t resist stopping for photo after photo. Overall, Split Rock Lighthouse offers the perfect blend of history, and scenery.. Whether you’re a history buff, a hiker, or just someone who loves incredible views, this place is a must-visit on the North Shore.

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Nature & Parks
Known for its historic lighthouse, this park boasts trails, lakefront campsites & a rocky beach.
Great mix of history and wonderful views. This park may not have the waterfalls but it makes up for it in its great trails and beach/lake access, and wonderful campground.

This was a bucket list stop for me and the main motivation for our trip to the area, it did not disappoint! We purchased tickets ahead of time for the Keeper’s tour because I thought I read that it was a max of 10 per tour and I wanted to make sure we got in, however it seemed that if there was a bigger group they split the tours between guides for a max of 10 per group. Paid entry into the park is not required if you’re there for the tour. We arrived at 8:30 for the 9:00 tour - the building does not open until 10:00, so don’t expect to walk up and go in. However, our tour guide came out to greet us when she noticed people arriving and unlocked the door for us to use the bathroom before the tour, so that was appreciated. Amy was our tour guide and she was a delight to spend time with, obviously very knowledgeable and passionate about what she does and encouraged everyone to take their time for photos and gawking. The area is currently under construction so you will see some fencing and obvious construction work right now but I was still able to get great photos. Unfortunately it was smoggy from the wildfires so I didn’t get great shots from the iconic lighthouse viewing areas, but nothing anyone can do about that. I recommend wearing walking shoes as the paths are rocky and there are some stairs throughout the tour, obviously to go up to the lighthouse. The path to the iconic viewing spots out on the trails (separate from the tour but still required paid entry) is all dirt and gravel and there are SEVERAL stairs (long stair case) - we went down the stairs and took the dirt path back around to avoid going back up. The gift shop was the type I was comfortable spending money at, it is set up well and not full of junk. I also recommend walking through the building and watching the video about the lighthouse. Pay for the tour, you won’t be disappointed!

An amazing state park with amazing camping options. Pebble beach is a must. You can kayak or paddle to the island. At low tide, hiking to the island is also an option. Not too many tourists even in the peak season. I drove all the way from Chicago and worth the time. The water of the sea was crystal clear.

The state park is separate from the lighthouse but has the best views so you have to do both Hiking, picnic areas, Day Hill, Pebble Beach. Lots of lakefront access and photo opportunities Also some impressive night views. Viewed the Milky Way from Pebble Beach

Beautiful campground! If you enjoy biking the trail access is fabulous. There is no cell signal here so plan ahead. We would have given this a five star but no dump station or water hook up for RV’s. There’s water, showers and such but not convent for longer stays.

Shipwreck campground was really nice - many large sites. Only downside is no dump station insight! Pebble beach is awesome, staff at the campground was top notch, informative and extremely pleasant to work with!

Anyone who knows me knows how many lighthouses I’ve painted throughout my years… but to see real lighthouses in person was the icing-on-the-cake during my Minnesota trip. Did not have time to see them all, but I hope to come back again. Super gloomy and cloudy during early mornings. The sun eventually came out mid-day. Beautiful still!!

Gooseberry Falls State Park

Nature & Parks
Gooseberry Falls State Park is a vast 1,682-acre park boasting stunning waterfalls and various wildlife. Visitors can explore campgrounds, trails, and picnic areas while learning about the area's history at the interpretive center/museum/gift shop. The paved walkway provides an excellent view of the magnificent waterfalls. Nearby restaurants with unique names like Crooked Spoon and Devil Track Resort cater to group dining needs.
Gooseberry Falls is a must-visit gem along Minnesota’s North Shore, offering natural beauty and easy access that makes it perfect for families. The main attraction, of course, is the stunning waterfall—its powerful flow and cool waters are mesmerizing and provide the perfect backdrop for a fun and memorable outing. The short hike from the parking lot is easy, taking about 10 minutes along a well-maintained path. It’s just enough to stretch your legs without tiring out the kids, and the scenery along the way is beautiful, with views of the river, forest, and rocky terrain. Once at the falls, there’s plenty of space for everyone to explore. Kids (and adults!) will love climbing over the smooth rocks, splashing in the water, and getting up close to the rushing cascades. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours just enjoying nature. The visitor center is also very well done, with informative displays, helpful staff, and clean, modern bathrooms—always a big plus when traveling with family. Whether you’re stopping for a quick visit or making a day of it, Gooseberry Falls is a wonderful spot to soak in the outdoors, take photos, and enjoy a peaceful slice of Minnesota’s natural beauty.

Been coming here my entire life, and it’s always consistently amazing. The scenes are beautiful, the facilities are clean, the staff are great when you interact, etc. The only downside we’ve had recently is you have to have reservations about a year in advance (no exaggeration). But otherwise the trails are great, and I’m sad I didn’t take more pictures on the falls trail. Came here at the time of this posting in the beginning of the fall where the temps were perfect and there were little to no bugs. The sites are also clean and roomy, with what seems to be a complementary big rock in all the sites I’ve been to 🤣. For me this is by far the best state park I’ve ever been to.

Beautiful as ever. The river was high enough that the falls were fantastic. The trails appear wild and untouched and beautifully manicured at the same time. Plenty of dirt hiking and boardwalk and stairs so most anyone can have a good hike and great access to views. Not a spec of trash anywhere.

This is a beautiful natural wonder! It’s unique in that it’s very accessible. You can actually walk out onto the rocks and put your feet in the water, and really explore. It would be nice if there was a little more signage along the pathways - the map we were given is not very functional, and they’re such a network of paths that it can be become confusing. We were there on a weekend in early fall, and the place was overrun with leaf peepers! I don’t know if it’s always that busy, to me that was the only drawback. You could hardly get a photo of the falls without people in it. During peak season, mid week might be less busy. They have a lovely visitor center and gift shop, and nice restrooms.

One of our favorite places we stopped on our trip, felt like we could've spent forever there exploring new areas! Would absolutely recommend it for families, couples, or on your own. Our friends also has a wedding ceremony there that was beautiful and peaceful and would absolutely recommend that for anyone wanting to elope or a very small intimate wedding!

The Upper, middle, and lower falls are usually very busy in the summer, even on a weekday. But the falls are worth it to see. We went in late July and after a week with a lot of rain, so there was water flowing over the falls, which makes it that much better. It does lead to some muddy or wet spots on the trails, but nothing that can't be navigated. Highly recommend making the short hike to the Fifth falls. If you do, I recommend the trail on the East/North side of the river. It is less steps and seemed easier. It also has the best views of the falls. This area is a LOT less crowded and was actually my favorite part of the park. A quick picnic by the Lakeview picnic shelter is nice, with a very short walk to the lake and river. I will make this a place I must visit every summer, one of my favorites.

Great park. Easy to navigate, beautiful sights, and worth the hike. There are easy trails for those with disabilities, but they are longer paths in general with less sight seeing. However, there are several nice overlook bridges and benches. Dog friendly too!

Easy to access via paved trails. Pretty busy, the water is accessible, people letting their kids swim, even though the signs strongly discourage it. Doesn't take much walking to get away from the crowds, tho. Very pretty.
