(Translated by Google) I stayed in a simple room and I think it is not a good service for the price they charge, since the room is very small and does not include breakfast, nor is there a good telephone signal inside. The façade of the hotel is very pretty and the location is very good although the parking lot is small. (Translated by Google) A hotel that has the three B's!! Good, nice and cheap! Excellent location around the corner from the central park, the facilities are from the colonial era that give a touch of romance and a lot of tranquility and the staff's attention is excellent. Compared to the price of other hotels, this one has very good prices, it is not a luxury hotel, but it is very nice. I would gladly stay again!! (Original) Un hotel que tiene las tres B!! DO NOT FOLLOW GOOGLE MAPS TO THIS LOCATION! It will take you on side roads though what could be private property with vicious dogs. I was attacked by a dog en route ending my trip to Guatemala. It looks like a great view, however we never made it because we had to take a detour to the hospital. I hope this review can help others avoid the situation I encountered.
Bros G — Google review
Location is incorrect on maps. The view point is right at the top, you have to follow the road all the way around. It's hard to get lost if you just follow the road. It's near the slides area and sort of ring road which is correct in google maps. Walking from Parque Central took us 3 hours return, with 2x 30 year olds going at a leisurely pace and stopping along the way for photos. There was a couple of vendors set up up top selling fresh fruit and other small snacks, which was super nice. I've heard this path can be quite unsafe so it's best to go on the weekend when there's a more people around. But leave your valuables at home just in case. There were quite a few people walking, running, biking and driving along the road when we were there around noon on a Sunday.
Emma P — Google review
Fun hike. DO NOT FOLLOW THE GOOGLE MAPS WALKING ROUTE. IT IS DANGEROUS WITH DOGS. Look at the map of where the start of the trail is and walk there. Google has you take the “fastest” route which is walking to the end of a neighborhood’s road, cutting through someone’s backyard, and then joining the trail buy hiking up the side of the hill. There is a clear and easy trail, do not follow Google.

Volcán San Pedro

Mentioned on
6 lists
Volcano
Nature & Parks
Volcán San Pedro is a conical volcano in Guatemala, offering forest-carpeted hiking slopes and stunning lake panoramas from its 9,908-ft. crater. The hike is moderately challenging but rewards hikers with great views. The trail starts at 1800m and reaches 3020m, making it more challenging than Acatenango according to some hikers. There's an entrance fee of 100 GTQ and police presence along the trail for security.
Did this climb yesterday (23 Jan 2025). Fortunately, at the time of writing, the guides assured me that no armed robberies or thieves had been sighted in the previous 8 months. Some individuals also did the hike alone. No problems either. If the situation stays the same, it’s a recommended hike. If the situation gets bad again (locals will know), then it’s just not worth it. It’s a very nice hike and an splendid view. But nothing to risk your life (or even your phone!) for.
Marcos L — Google review
Long, steep hike but well worth the effort. I did this solo on a Sunday starting at 7am and hit the summit at 9:30. The view is amazing! I perched on some boulders and took in the sights while eating some snacks. I did see 2 policía at the 2300m mark (at the tire swing) and the gentleman at the entrance said the trail is very safe. I ran into many people coming down that had camped overnight to catch the sunrise and then coming down I ran into a few groups heading up. The trail is shaded most of the way but the bottom half starts getting hot in the late morning so an early start is a good idea. It's a tough hike! Steep the whole way.
Mike D — Google review
Simply amazing! Stunning view if u lucky to get no clouds like us! It’s worth price and effort surely! We, average 40yo, not so well trained, smokers…it took us 4 hours up and 3 down with breaks! So be prepared…at least 1,5l water p/p! Pro tip: from wed to sun, last launch is at 5 pm, 1 hour more! Conclusions: after 2 days resting, I still can't walk well…but feel blessed that I didn’t quit!
Christian L — Google review
Beautiful experience. My partner and I climbed volcan san pedro this morning. It took us just over 3 hours to climb up and 2 hours to climb down (including rest breaks). I recommend going early as the clouds started to come in around 10am. We paid 100q each at the entry point and the lady said there were no bandits. There were lots of people along the route, including police and we felt very safe. Some parts were slippery - especially near the top. Take snacks and plenty of water.
Sarah P — Google review
Beautifully maintained track. Very friendly and honest staff at the entry gate. Police sitting at 2200 were really nice as well. No sign of Banditos. Cloudy when I reached the top. Caught a tuk tuk from the dock in San Pedro - the driver tried charging me Q200 but ended up agreeing to Q30 (still triple the price of an uber moto). I started at 6:50am, arrived at the peak at 8:30, and got back to the trailhead by 10:15.
Lorne G — Google review
It cost 100Q per person to enter. I started at 6am. It took about 3 hours to climb to the summit and a little less than 2 hours to go down. I didn't see any Ladrones at the time, but I hear they're very common. (Aug 2017)
Asher R — Google review
Hike done on 01/02/2020. Started at 5AM, we spoke with a local guide who was waiting for the sunrise at half of the ascent (at the columpio) who told us that 10 tourists were robbed on 12/30/2019 at the summit. Nothing happened to us (at 7AM at the top with a good pace) but the story has been confirmed later and it is still considered dangerous to climb solo or even with guide. The view is good from the swing (1H+ hikking) but better at the top. Hopefully it will be safer soon to enjoy this amazing point of view.
Bastien G — Google review
Very easy to do. If you get to the volcano before 6am the ticket office is closed and you get in for free. The volcano is safe. Policemen are on 2300, as well as on 3000 meters. There is no need for a Guid.

Indian Nose Viewpoint

Mentioned on

Mayan Face Mirador is a popular spot for hikers and nature enthusiasts, offering stunning views of Lake Atitlan. The hike from Santa Clara is relatively easy, taking about 45 minutes, with the option for more challenging routes from San Juan or San Pedro. It's recommended to go with a guide for a safe and enjoyable experience. Many visitors suggest catching the sunrise for an unforgettable view, but going in the afternoon also offers a unique and peaceful experience.
The hike is hard if you're not used to altitude like me. But it really worth. They give coffee and breads on the top so you can relax. The way is good, no dangerous animals and always have a group. The sunrise is spectacular. I paid 150Q include everything, even the entrance and transportation.
Bruna I — Google review
Beautiful views from the top! The hike was not too bad, about 20 minutes of flat walking from Santa Clara then 20 minutes of stairs up to the top. Highly recommend visiting!
Charles V — Google review
The hike while short (30-40min) is way harder than it seems. The first 10 minutes are easy as the trail is almost flat, but then you have to climb your way through the top of the mountain. At the top you’ll have a very nice view of the lake.. but I do recommend to check the weather before, cause if it’s cloudy you’ll get to see nothing, and it’s not worth the effort to be honest.
Adriana — Google review
Nice guided hike cost 150Q includes shuttle from San Juan, guided hike up the Indian Nose, coffee or artisanal chocolate plus pan dulce, and shuttle back. Left at 4, returned at 8am.
Melissa P — Google review
Amazing view, the hike is relatively short - just over 30 minutes on the way up, gaining about 250m elevation. The first third of the walk is fairly flat, the remainder is all uphill. We did this hike at sunrise, which meant a very early start (2.45am wakeup) and starting the trail at 4.30am. It was definitely worth hiking uphill in the dark. We were one of the first to arrive at the top just after 5am. Some people had camped at the summit overnight. By 5.30am it got a bit busier. Despite it being a cloudy day, the sunrise was great. Watching Lake Atitlan turn from dark to light is something special. We got given some hot chocolate and bread for free. Beautiful way to start your day.
Rishi B — Google review
Super easy trail up from Santa Clara about 45 mins... then a bit of a trickier walk down to San Juan about 1.5 hour... but definitely do-able. A must do when you visit Atitlan.
Janine T — Google review
A must hike if you are around lake Atitlan! The sunrise over the lake - worth all the effort. There are a ton of local agencies you can book your tour - usually around 100Q per person. Highly recommend!
Shachar G — Google review
Medium difficultly hike to the top but worth it! If you're doing the sunrise hike it's pitch black obviously so remember a flashlight. It was very steep at points, with narrow pathways, and with the rain it was also incredibly slippy on the way down. But the view at the top is great, they provided coffee/hot chocolate at the top too. You need to book a guide/tour, which is well worth it (although our tour guide didn't take any breaks on the way up so be prepared just in case)

Anita’s Mayan Kitchen Cooking class / Lake Atitlan Cooking Class San Pedro la Laguna /guatemalan food

Cooking class
Food & Drink
Anita’s Mayan Kitchen Cooking Lesson in Guatemala offers an unforgettable culinary adventure that immerses you in the rich tapestry of Mayan culture. The experience kicks off with Anita, a truly remarkable host, guiding participants through a selection of traditional dishes for the day’s menu. Each class is unique, as guests vote on what they’d like to cook! The journey begins with a vibrant stroll through the bustling open market in San Pedro, where you'll gather fresh ingredients and perhaps discover new produce to try.
Our cooking class with Anita was easily one of the highlights of our trip. Anita is incredibly warm, kind-hearted and passionate about what she does. We felt instantly at ease and taken care of with her and her cooking team. We visited markets we would otherwise not have visited, learned endlessly about Mayan cuisine, ingredients, daily life and history. Anita was generous with her time and always welcomed questions with detailed explanations and context. Every aspect of the class was hands-on we got to participate is so many different tasks while also trying lots of new foods (countless varieties of mango!!). Anita even went out of her way to let us store our bags during the tour because we had an shuttle to catch right after. By going on this tour you are not only supporting a wonderful woman but also her community. I cannot recommend this enough :) Thank you so much for making us feel at home with you Anita <3
Kayleigh H — Google review
The best experience we had in Guatemala. Anita is so nice and welcoming. She took us to the local market to buy the ingredients, introduced her community to us with her lovely and interesting stories. This is not even the reason why I would recommend but the food was delicious. I would recommend it to anyone who seeks an authentic experience from Guatemala! That’s the best you can get!

Run, do not walk, to Anita’s Mayan Kitchen Cooking Class. This class is hands down one of my favorite activities I have ever done while on vacation. Anita offers a full immersion in to the Mayan culture at Lake Atitlan from start to finish. You show up for class, choose your preferred menu for the day, go to the local markets to pick all the ingredients you need, prepare the ingredients as a group, and cook everything fresh! This entire process was so incredibly informative and the food is amazing… please try her abuela’s Guacamole :-) On top of everything, Anita is one of those special people you meet in life that you’ll never forget. She was an open book, willing to share all details about her life and she has the kindest heart. I can’t recommend this class enough!
Jordan C — Google review
This cooking class was a highlight of our trip and worth every penny! Anita is so warm, kind, and keen to share details of Mayan culture, history, and cuisine. Anita allowed the group to choose our menu, and we visited a local market to pick up fresh ingredients. Anita’s care and dedication towards creating opportunity amongst her community is admirable, and this experience truly felt like sustainable tourism. We made a delicious meal while overlooking the beautiful lake Atitlan. We tried local fruits and recipes. I highly recommend this cooking class for anyone looking to learn more about both local and Guatemalan culture. Thank you to Anita and team!
Melissa J — Google review
Best cooking class I've ever had - 1000% recommend! Felt like a true local experience as Anita took us to the market to buy fresh ingredients and ultimately into her kitchen to prepare a delicious meal. We learned about Mayan and Guatemalan cultures, participated in every step of the cooking process, made friends from all over the world, enjoyed beautiful views of volcanos, and were inspired by Anita's journey and relentless commitment to supporting her community in San Pedro. Anita is a rock star and you will love your time with her!
Eric P — Google review
Absolutely the highlight of my trip to Guatemala! This was the best cooking class I’ve ever taken. Anita and her team are warm, professional, and incredibly patient - they guided us from shopping for fresh ingredients at the local market all the way to preparing a full Guatemalan feast: snacks, an appetizer, main dish, and two desserts! The experience goes far beyond cooking. You’ll learn about traditional Guatemalan flavors, meet great people, and enjoy your meal with breathtaking views. Anita also gives back to her community, which made the experience feel even more meaningful. If you do one thing while you’re in Guatemala, make it Anita’s Cooking Class - you won’t regret it!
Shayal P — Google review
We had a wonderful experience with Anita. Our group of 9 picked a menu of appetizers, main dish and desserts and then Anita took us along to the market to buy our groceries. Together we cooked a magnificent meal under her guidance in her beautiful kitchen overlooking the lake. Anita has so much knowledge to share about Mayan cuisine and culture in general. Afterwards we visited the women’s weaving collective for a short introduction to Mayan weaving. Overall one of the best experiences we had on our visit of lake Atitlan
Marleen N — Google review
Anita is one of the most inspirational people I've ever met! We signed up to maybe take home a cool new recipe and ended up with so much knowledge about the Mayan culture, the local community, and how Anita is using her skills to help that community! Her passion and care made this the most memorable experience I've had in a long time. The personalized touch of being able to select the menu we wanted to learn and then go meet and support and learn about local vendors and the work they put in made it so cool. The cooking class itself was run like a well oiled machine, everyone getting to participate in different parts of bringing together the meal while Anita shared cooking techniques and the lovely women that help her somehow magically keeping on top of the dishes. The end result was a delicious meal with other travelers who felt like friends due to Anita's ability to create a fun welcoming space. Absolutely do this if you can!!

Nestled just 9 kilometers from Quetzaltenango, the Ermita Conquistadora de La Inmaculada Concepcion stands as a testament to history, being the first cathedral built in Central America back in 1524. This charming church is not only significant for its age but also for its stunning original architecture and priceless artwork that captivates visitors. (Translated by Google) This is the first Church built in all of Central America, it dates back to the 1525th century, it is close to half a millennium (500 years old). Its Altarpiece dates back to the same time it was built; a few years ago restoration and maintenance were necessary, which cost approximately half a million quetzales. It is a small, mystical place with capacity for, perhaps, 140 people. It has good lighting and its artwork is priceless. It can be visited from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. There is no cost to enter and it is semi surrounded by beautiful gardens. Lake Atitlán is a stunning crater lake in Guatemala, offering eco-tours and lodging options. Wellkind Guatemala has contributed to environmental conservation efforts in the Lake Atitlan Basin by planting thousands of trees. There are various accommodation choices available, including budget-friendly hotels with en-suite bathrooms and views of the lake. Casa Monterey provides a peaceful retreat near Lake Atitlan and Calle Santander, featuring a lush garden and spacious accommodations ideal for families or groups.
What a gorgeous lake! And the villages dotted along it are super diverse and fun, from a digital nomad central to yoga to party, anything you want! The public boats are very reliable though be prepared to bounce about a lot in rough weather, but overall super easy to travel along the lake.

Approaching Atitlan's shores, you feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret oasis, a hidden gem that few have been lucky enough to discover. It's a place of rare beauty, once nominated for being among the world's new seven wonders. I definitely haven't seen a lake more spectacular. Surrounded by Mayan villages, Atitlan also neighbours with three cone-shaped volcanoes and hides ancient ruins underneath its waters.
Nataliia K — Google review
WOW!!!🤩 what a absolutely stunning place. I felt like I had traveled to another world while boating around the lake surrounded by sleeping giants. The water was such a beautiful shade of blue. Still in total awe of the area. I highly recommend getting on a boat and traveling to the smaller towns around the lake. Each one has its own Myan vibe and rich heritage. I would go back to Guatemala just to visit this lake.
Vanessa C — Google review
First thing to say is that it will take you about 2 hours from Antigua. Second thing to say is that you'll go through their Sierras (Mountains) and will fall in love with the scenery. Third and most important, when in Atitlan, get yourself a private boat (Lancha) so that you can more easily go between the various towns and don't have to wait or worry about time. We went with this route and in 1 day had the chance to see 4 little pueblos at a very leisurely pace (trust me this is what you'll want to spend your money on). The lake itself is amazing with a feeling of calm and peace. The pueblos dot the shores of the lake and each is known for something different, with different colors, cuisine, and sites. The miradores are the best way to gain the necessary elevation to take in the magnitude of the lake but be ready for a steep climb.
Ezequiel B — Google review
Lake Atitlán is undeniably one of the most beautiful places in Guatemala. The scenery alone is worth the trip; a massive, shimmering lake completely surrounded by towering volcanoes. Waking up to those views is something I’ll never forget. I spent two days there, which felt like the perfect amount of time for me. I visited three of the small towns around the lake, and while they were charming, they all had a very similar, shopping-oriented vibe. Many people spend a full week hopping from town to town, but since I’m not big on shopping, it started to feel a bit repetitive. For me, the true highlight wasn’t the markets; it was the nature. The calm water, the dramatic volcano backdrop, and the overall peaceful atmosphere make Lake Atitlán a must-see destination. If you love stunning landscapes and quiet moments in nature, this place delivers. Two days was just right, and the views alone make the trip completely worth it.
Diego M — Google review
I recommend to visit this place on weekdays and try to arrive as early as possible to get better photos. Beautiful place!
Alexandra P — Google review
A magical place with breathtaking views. You can rent a boat and go to different places nearby, visit the oldest fire rituals on the first day of the meadow, hike in the mountains, buy the most delicious cocoa, coffee or honey. It has everything: the beauty of nature around, tranquility and a fascinating lake that inspires and makes you want to come back to this place. I recommend going during the day or in the morning. It can be chilly in the morning, so wear something warm when you're on the boat.

For Q70 per hour we were able to rent a paddle board and kayak. The trail to find it was alongside the lake just turn right after getting off the lancha if getting off at the main dock. Although we had our own children’s life jacket, I noticed they had some as well. The life jackets are also proper life jackets unlike some rental places that give you the cheap orange ones. If you go early in the morning, the lake is less choppy!

Highly recommend this experience to connect with a traditional and sacred ceremony. The cave itself was a powerful place and our guide Alex was really amazing. He shared lots of wisdom, knowledge and encouraged questions. We had such a great experience, we invited him to join us for dinner afterwards and he took us to a great local restaurant and continued to share his amazing knowledge. Super grateful and glad i booked this experience and hope to bring others to do this in the future when back around the Lake.

Awesome place to rent kayaks on the lake. 70Q for an hour or 100Q for 2 hours. Highly recommend 2 hours cause the kayaks are nice and it gives you lots of time to explore the lake. Staff was nice and kayaks were quality ones. After returning the kayaks, you can also chill or swill by the dock

My family and I LOVED Los elementos!!! We kayaked with a guide to a cliff jumping spot, we climbed, we lunched with Lee and his family and friends, we hiked in the jungle and rock climbed. This was not only a highlight of our trip but really a highlight of my life. I also love that this company is also a non profit and helps the community at Lake Atitlan including training guides and education for the local kids. It was worth every penny and I will be back one day.

Imagine waves lapping on the shore, distant thunder brewing, sun going down over a shimmering lake, and a volcano back drop, while you relax in your own private lake shore space. Well that’s what you get at Lee and Elaine’s casita at Santa Cruz La Laguna. I had such a relaxing time at this beautiful little property Clean, private room and bathroom, with a little, outdoor, covered kitchen that had everything you would need to cook yourself a meal (except the food), filtered water system, nice fridge, stove… or go right next door for amazing food, drink and a view. Lee and Elaine were very helpful in giving me information about excursions and hikes. There’s even trails to a waterfall behind the property. Or you can rent a kayak or paddle board from them at very affordable rates and use their private dock. I highly recommend staying at Las Bonitas. I will definitely return!

We booked this experience at Lake Atitlán and it was everything we needed after a long few days of travelling. Lovely, private bungalow on a beautiful property with stunning views of Lake Atitlán. Lee and everyone on the property were all very pleasant, helpful, responsive, and made sure we had everything we needed for a relaxing stay, and we were able to rent kayaks to explore the lake. They have refreshments for sale on the property, and there are a few restaurants just a short walk away. Highly recommend booking this experience for your Lake Atitlán adventure!

I recently spent a few days of recreation around Lake Atitlan prior to managing a work event in Antigua, Guatemala. It was a last-minute decision to come early to sight-see and I reached out to Kayak Adventure Center to help me coordinate everything with one point of contact. Lee, the owner, helped me put together an itinerary of adventure activities around the lake and the private transfers I needed coming from Guatemala City beforehand and moving to Antigua afterwards. Lissette, my driver, was very professional in her communication for my pickups and then was wonderful to ride with. We talked the whole way and had great conversations. She was very friendly and a great driver. One day I did a sunrise hike at Indian Nose with guide Mario, followed by the two of us kayaking the lake and doing some cliff-jumping and swimming which was super fun, and then he took me to the zip-line spot in the jungle and made sure I was all set there before departing. I enjoyed my time with him and it was a very fun day. Zip-lining was also great as the circuit has you flying over a river in a canyon in the jungle with views of the lake, as well. The next day I did a one-on-one guided summit of Volcan San Pedro. It was only after I booked that I read the reviews warning of armed robbery at the summit in past years. I contacted Lee to ask him about this and he was very quick to reply and reach out to chat about it. My guide Pancho (Omar) also was very transparent about the concerns and made sure to check in at the trailhead about current conditions. We were told there was a police presence that day at the summit itself and many other tourists on the trail so we proceeded. We experienced zero issues, and we met many tourists on the trail who were all jubilant about the hike (it was not overcrowded at all but we didn't feel alone). The hike was difficult but not impossible and Pancho was always ready to support my pace or any breaks I needed, but also keeping things moving forward so we could reach the summit in good time. He was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the history and geology of the region and the culture and history of its people. We had great conversations the whole way and I really enjoyed the dense forest on the hike up. When we got to the top there were some clouds but they opened up here and there for amazing views of the entire lake and all of the many volcanoes along the horizon. I felt in good hands the whole trip with Lee and his team.

This place is heaven on earth! Lee and his wife(owners) were so gracious to me and 2 friends I was traveling with. The villa was very clean and surroundings/ landscapes were meticulous. The service and amenities were 5 star! Not to mention the views which were pristine! Definitely going back and highly recommend you stay there too.🙂

Sitio Arqueológico Iximche

Park
Sights & Landmarks
Pre-Columbian city ruins dating from the 15th to 16th century with palaces, temples & ball courts.
This is a great, smaller site to see, especially if you can't get to Tikal. Many of the mounds are still covered with dirt and only a few are exposed. Several ball courts to see, but no real pyramids compared to Tikal. We also got to see some rituals being performed. There is a small museum. It was not crowded at all when we were there. Having a guide was very helpful because there aren't a lot of signs or explanations within the park itself.

Nice site and not to busy in the morning. With a guide you get more detailed info on how it was.

It was awesome to tour this myan settlement and see the history of the area. Wonderful museum and information spread throughout for you to read.

A dream come true visiting Iximche. I studied this site way back in my university days, and its history and relevance stayed firmly planted in my mind. What i was its importance to the current day Mayans, and it's continued use as a ceremonial site. This day, the visit, the ruins, conservation, and interpretation will stay with me forever.

First time visiting this ruins and was quite impressed with how well the ruins that remain are preserved. There wasn't a lot to see but it is an interesting place due to its historical significance. It was very pleasant to wander around the grounds imagining what this place looked like when it was bustling place 500 years ago. Would recommend spending and hour or two if you're in the area.

We loved the Museum. It opens at 1pm (during the week). I'm not sure about the weekends. Then we walked the Ruins. You can get a tour if you'd like too. It's no Tikal but we still enjoyed it. 😍.

Very cool mayan ruins with a cute museum! If you ride from Antigua to Panajachel, this is one of the few ways to incorporate mayan ruins into your trip if you don't want to fly to another area in Northern Guatemala.

Cemetery
Sights & Landmarks
Cementerio De Chichicastenango is a vibrant and culturally rich destination that stands out from typical cemeteries with its lively, colorful graves. This unique site offers a serene escape amidst the bustling atmosphere of one of Central America's largest street markets. Visitors can immerse themselves in the local Mayan culture, especially around significant dates like Day of the Dead when families gather to honor their loved ones with kites and music.
The cemetery is definitely a highlight of Chichicastenango, alongside the market the city is known for. It’s really beautiful. For a great view of the cemetery, I recommend visiting the garden at Hotel Maya Inn.

Iglesia de Santo Tomás, located in Chichicastenango, Guatemala, is a cultural gem dating back to the 16th century. Built by the Spanish on top of a Maya temple, it features 18 original steps representing the months of the Mayan calendar. The church offers a unique blend of Roman Catholic mass and ancient Maya tradition, with copal incense burning around its steps creating a sensory experience.
Amazing market you can spend 4 hours in this area, make sure you know how to bargain 😀😀😀, must try some local foods. We bought lots of gifts

Always a beautiful place to visit where catholic and ancient traditions collide. Last visited in 2010 and 13 years later does not fail to impress us with its location at the heart of the town. During the week, you can enjoy the scenery of many ladies selling flowers and during market days, it is vibrant with so many locals, tourists and shops. On some days you can enjoy fresh made tamales and atole at the shops that set up at the bottom of the stairs.

The Iglesias de Santo Tomas is simply magnificent. Said to have been built on the remains of a Cakchiquel Maya temple. A visit here on a Sunday brings the technicolour spectacle of the market directly in front of the church, whilst inside is a blend of Roman Catholic mass and ancient Maya tradition. Copal incense is burned inside and around the church steps. Making the air thick with the sweet scent - not unlike that of Frankincense. A true sensory experience.

Surrounding the market are two churches dating back to the 14th century, blending Catholic and Mayan traditions.
Great cultural experience. Lots of good handmade crafts and textiles along with food stalls, fruit and vegetable stalls. The market is open only during Thursdays and Sundays so plan your trip accordingly! Also do avoid going on crowded holidays or long weekends to have a wholesome experience

It's more touristy than people think. We have travelled entire Guatemala and haven't seem anyone wearing those colourful stuff than tourists. The prices are ridiculously high. We found similar stuff 10X cheaper in other markets. Cóban market is highly recommended if you plan to purchase something. This market is recommended to just visit or maybe try some local food.

Quite the place! I recommend getting here the night before or early in the morning to see the vendors setting up before it gets too busy. We were interested in getting a mask, but were kind of disappointed in the quality (of the painting, the carving seemed good) so we didn’t end up getting one. Once it gets busy (around 11am) I’d recommend heading to the next place. Ideal if you have your own vehicle.

Very nice experience with the family. A lot of activities such as horse riding, feeding animals and fishing. Nice people. However, please be aware that the road in the last 10-15 minutes of getting there isn’t paved at all with lots of potholes. Try getting there during the day as there roads and highways aren’t that illuminated as well. Other than that, all good.

Is an amazing place! Wow! Just be aware about the road, isn't entire pavement. Better to ride an RV or 4x4. Buses are going from Sumpango at gas station, to Yalú. Prices for activities are high but honestly totally worth. Coffee is good, expensive, better to buy a pound of coffee at their office and make it yourself, is the same price! If you want a little of adventure you can ask for hitch a ride at the entrance near to the panamerican highway...

Biotopo del Quetzal, located in the Verapaces region, is a green mountain preserve famous for its diverse bird population, including the magnificent quetzal. The area also features the airy caves of Candelaria and Laguna Lachua National Park with its stunning blue-green lagoon. Visitors can enjoy hiking through jungle and rainforest environments on both long and short trails.
Amazing place, a beautiful rainforest that you must visit, I took the longest way and took me around 3hrs total, you can be in a natural place where the only noise you can hear is the birds. It's nice for be there alone, with family and friends, recommend
E. P — Google review
The biotopo is one of the best places in this area to experience the cloud forest. The preserve covers a large part of an extremely steep mountain covered in verdant old-growth forest. The biodiversity of the trees, moss, ferns, bromeliads, and air plants here is incredible. The preserve has two trails: the shorter one (“Los Helechos”) is 2 km or about 1 hour round-trip, and the longer (“Los Musgos”) is 4 km or 2 hours round-trip. Both trails start with a steep climb of numerous switchbacks before leveling off and then descending back down to the visitor center. The trails are well-designed and covered in gravel to keep them from getting too muddy, but proper shoes with some grip are still recommended. At the very end of both trails there are two large pools fed by a waterfall where you can swim, so pack a swimsuit (there are changing rooms and restrooms by the pools). The longer trail also features a short turnoff to a viewpoint with stunning views of the valley below, as well as a massive old tree called the “Grandfather Tree”. Staff informed us that the best place to see quetzales in the springtime is around this tree, at the highest part of the trail, since the quetzales spend more time high up on the mountain before breeding, raising their young, and then migrating down the mountain in the summer. You don’t have to go far to see birds, however - we saw dozens of warblers and other songbirds on the shorter trail closer to the visitor center. The reserve also features a display of local orchids, as well as secure parking on-site.

The air felt very thin to me. I would go up the path a few steps and felt my heart beating over 120bpm and would have to take a break. It was extremely difficult for the first part of the path and got easier at the halfway point. I’m old, fat and menopausal so I sure did sweat a lot on the path too! But the views were phenomenal! The foliage was amazing and unlike anything I’ve ever seen before! The humidity makes the plants pretty and the humans miserable LOL

Extraordinary and beautiful natural jungle. Excellent maintained and manicured paths get you lost in the wilderness of foliage and waterfalls. A peaceful look into the Guatemala many don’t see. Oh yes, we think we saw a Quetzal, but aren’t sure. They’re fast and elusive.

45 minute walk through a fresh forest of little waterfalls and trees is a great routine-breaker. The air is pure, climate is fresh, and the uphill walk is exhilarating, not strenuous. Bathrooms at entrance are very clean and have toilet paper. Bathrooms located at the middle of the hike are rustic and not recommended. The little museum is very educational. We did not get to see any quetzals, but we understand because the quetzal is a timid bird.

(Translated by Google) The place is beautiful, but it's become a business for some guides to seek additional fees and pressure people to rent horses; animal exploitation is not right. We were unlucky that during our tour, the guide was called away for another job and constantly pressured us to speed up the ride. He never gave us any privacy to share alone time because he was always commenting on our conversations and sometimes even making backhanded jokes. The trail is difficult to access, especially during rainy weather and for people with health problems or who are overweight. I wouldn't return to the place; although the waterfall is beautiful, I think there are other tourist spots in Guatemala that are more worthwhile to visit.

If you enjoy flowers and are yearning for some time in nature, a visit to Orquigonia is for you! We visited in October, and even though July and November are probably the best months to visit, we had a blast and got to see a lot of beautiful and interesting orchids, including the Monja Blanca. There is an opportunity to buy local artisanal products at the end of the tour, as well, and we really enjoyed our coffee that we bought.

A beautiful spot to get out of the concrete jungle and into the real jungle. They preserve orchids from all over Guatemala and have an incredible collection that you explore while walking around their beautifully crafted grounds. They are literally doing gods work and protecting the beautiful floral diversity of Guatemala. Totally worth a stop for a tour of the park (Q75/person) and a tea in the jungle after. The girls working the store were super helpful about other things to do in Coban. Get here by taking a bus from near the mall for Q3 and then stop at Casa Cacao on the way back to Coban to eat chocolate infused dishes.

It was the off-season when we visited so there was less to see but there's always something and this is a good place to support. About: The Orquigonia in Cobán Guatemala holds a special place as a botanical sanctuary dedicated to preserving the region's rich orchid diversity. It began with a vision to conserve these delicate flowers and educate visitors about their importance in local ecosystems. Orquigonia stands out for its extensive collection of orchid species, carefully curated to showcase the beauty and variety of these plants. The project originated from a passion for orchids and a desire to protect them from habitat destruction. Through education, conservation efforts, and stunning displays, Orquigonia has become a haven for orchid enthusiasts and a beacon of biodiversity preservation in Guatemala.

The history of the farm which started with Germans who then left during the war was an interesting story as well. Highly recommend coming to visit to support the coffee farmer co-op community directly and to learn about one of the world’s favourite drinks!

Interesting to check out if you’re in the region. I’ve been to better coffee tours but it was fun to do the tasting nonetheless and it was clear that they put a lot of love and effort into what they do.

Really enjoyable tour, it was pretty quiet due to fewer tourists coming through. Had a walk around the plantation then a tasting session afterwards explaining all the different forms of preparation

Nature & Parks
Semuc Champey is a stunning natural attraction located in the Lank municipal district along the Cahabon river. It features a 500-meter-long natural limestone bridge, with the Cahabon river flowing underneath for about 300 meters. The site is renowned for its picturesque stepped pools formed by the bridge, offering cool, turquoise waters perfect for swimming.
One of the most beautiful places that I’ve ever been to. Even getting to the place is an adventure. The pools themselves are crystal clear and beautiful and provide a nice and relaxing getaway from the hike. The locals fair and along the route have wonderful food to buy. The trek to the actual pools is moderately steep and rocky and the ride to even get to the area is bumpy. And then of course the hike up the mountain after the pools would be more strenuous. Definitely would not recommend for anyone who has severe back issues or is unstable. But for anyone that loves adventure this place is great!

We took Semu Champey tour and it was absolutely amazing. I think our experience was even better because our tour guide. Jungle boy is very funny, enthusiastic and outgoing. He was born there and therefore he knows everything you need during this tour. The tour took 8 hours around and thankfully it didn’t rain until the end of it. We did things we’ve never done before and they were beyond our fears. We went through a cave with full of water, dark and small, he made sure everything was fine the whole time, and you really can do the jumps and sliding if you want. Aside of jumping from a swing and tubing for a few minutes, we hiked had a big included lunch and finally we swam in the nine pools available for swimming and jumping. We def think that without a guide this is not imposible and even less enjoyable.

Absolutely amazing! Observe that there is no need for a tour guide. I recommend using the parking (if you are in your own vehicle) next to the entrance (Q10) rather than right after bridge (Q50). The hike up to the viewpoint is strenuous, but IMHO worth it. Dogs only allowed if emotional support documentation available.

We went to Semuc with our hostel and we thought it was amazing. A natural beauty. The pools were very clear and clean despite raining a few days before. The view point is great and worth the climb. Would recommend.

Gorgeous place. Our trip was organised by Mayan Gateway with local guide Eli. We climbed the stairs to the Mirador first - took about 20 minutes- which was hot and sweaty and hard on the lungs and legs but worth it for the view and made the swimming afterwards especially nice. There are toilets and changing rooms near the pools as well as lockers (bring your own lock) but most people seem to leave bags on the bank within line of sight. Don't worry about swim shoes - the rocks are smooth and the water is deep. There were a few lifeguards too.

One of the most beautiful places to see in Guatemala. Great for a day trip for swimming and a little hiking to the view point. Hike to view point is a bit steep but so worth the view!

Freaking awesome! But food availability is VERY limited. Take swimming gear, snacks and plenty of water. Then just enjoy the absolutely amazing atmosphere 😍

Genuinely the most beautiful place I’ve ever visited. Sensational pools, beautiful views and magical mountain scenery. The cost for entrance is 50GTQ (£5), which can be paid on arrival without booking. When you arrive, you can pick up reasonably priced drinks and food from street vendors before entering the park. The walk to the viewing point is c. 30-40 minutes up stairs / rocks. It’s relatively slippery, so go carefully. We drove the whole way to Lanquin from Flores. It’s possible in an average rental (4x4 not needed), but is a challenging drive. Always stick to the main roads no matter what your navigation says, as the side roads are very sketchy (steep, slippery, big rocks, etc). Avoid driving at night, as lots of people / animals / cars use the roads, which are not lit. The entrance to the park is accessed via a 10 minute shuttle from Lanquin, which costs around 50-100 GTQ for a return trip. You could drive it in a 4x4 (or possibly in a normal car, with a high risk tolerance), but I’d recommend going via a shuttle, which can be easily found in Lanquin or via your hostel. We didn’t do the cave tours and were perfectly happy at the main section - you can access everywhere aside from the caves in the normal fee.

What an amazing place! From my understanding it’s the first hotel ever in the area. It has expanded plenty since it’s inception and there are photos in the lobby of what it used to look like. The place is full of history, but their rooms are spacious and family friendly with very accommodating prices. If you’re looking for a peaceful stay with great views of the river and access to their waterfall and a visit to Juancho Alvarado (their rescue crocodile, who is set to be released back to the wild), then look no further. There’s a wonderful pool close to the waterfall that is set as part of the river that you can swim in. The staff was super helpful and friendly. This is a family friendly establishment where you can feel as one with nature. If you’re looking for loud partying, this is not the place for you, but if you’re looking to enjoy the natural wonders of Semuc Champey, this place can be home during your stay.

Good location, easy to get to in any type of car with the new road. Just a little noise from in the morning from said road. Staff was nice and you don't pay entrance for the waterfalls and discount price for the cave. No wifi though. They told me at check in that there was electricity only from 6-10pm and the some hours fater midday but failed to mention that there isn't a single plug in the rooms. Phones etc. can only be charged in the restaurant or reception. Not ideal.

filthy. no wifi. sheets had holes and didn’t fit the bed. light bulbs burnt out. power only a few hours a day. no outlets in our room. staff indifferent. but it is super cheap and across the street from the river. don’t stay here…..go to greengos instead!

Absolutely excellent location for visiting Samuc Champey. You do not want to make the journey from Lanquin everyday to visit the pools or the caves, so I highly recommend staying here for days you plan to be visiting Samuc Champey. They also offered us a free ride from Lanquin when we arrived. Stayed in the dorm rooms but no one else was there so it was basically a really cheap private room. It was understandably a bit damp feeling but I just aired it out as much as possible. There is no power or lights for most of the day. I was there in August and they turned the lights on when it got dark at around 6ish pm and then turned everything off again at 9:30. So you have to be strategic in charging any devices. There is no wifi so it's not like you need to charge a lot, but you will want to have something for photos at Samuc Champey. Also there is no kitchen. The meals are around 30 quetzales. Nothing fancy but it's all decent. There is great swimming in the river right in front of the property and a fun rope swing. The manager is super friendly and helpful in general. He did a lot of work to arrange for us to catch our super early shuttle out of Lanquin. He also offered a fun cave tour package with tubing back to the property is well worth it.

We ended up staying here by accident since our first choice turned us down because of my son, but I'm so glad things turned out the way they did. This place was great, everyone was so nice and our room was literally steps away from the river! And about a 10 minute walk to the caves and the national park Semuc Champey.

Simple but ok, they were very friendly and helpful. The guy from the hotel did also the candle tour through the cave and was very nice! Food is also ok but don't expect 5 star meal.

Only a cover sheet on the bed with a thin rough blanket. Only have electric for 3 hours. Drain is clogged in the shower only cold water the water comes out of the sink like an 80 year old man with a prostate problem flow. And at 200 Q a night . Not Worth it

Grutas de Lanquín is a network of limestone caves filled with stunning stalactites and rock formations resembling animals. The caves are home to thousands of bats, making it an off-the-beaten-path adventure for those seeking a unique experience. Visitors can choose to explore the large and fascinating caves with or without a guide. While somewhat daunting, the tour is incredibly thrilling as you venture into the cave by candlelight, guided by knowledgeable staff who ensure your safety.
Amazing place to visit. We stopped here on our way back from Semuc. 30q for foreigners and 10 for parking. The caves are amazing, there are lights inside and you can enter without a guide. We were alone exploring the amazing huge cave system. Very worth it!
Martin V — Google review
Unexplored caves where a river borns, nature reigns here, there is around 400 meters with ilumination and from there is full darkness and it depends on you to explore, there is also a underground cenote. Amazing place.
Victor Z — Google review
What an adventure. This cavetour is crazy. We were very early so we kinda had a private tour just the guide and me and my girlfriend. it was insane for me to see that we entered the cave just with some candles - no helmet, no swimvest, no flashlights nothing. While it is somewhat frightening it is also super exciting. The Guide always tells you what to do and what to look out for. you can bring a waterproof phone or camera if you like. you will have to swimm, climb and probably hurt yourself a little while doing so. I recommend wearing water shoes. If you don't have any you can rent them there or you can buy them from a local for about 5$ a pair. There are also families selling food and little children selling chocolate close to the entrance. Buy it! the food is great and the chocolate is amazing and totally handmade (we saw that first hand) and the people living there are very poor. all in all an amazing place and a great adventure.
Faw — Google review
A HUGE cave, amazing!!! You walk inside unsupervised and you can easily get lost there. Even though they have lights installed, a torch is a must. Extremely slippery, wear proper shoes. The parking is 10Q and entrance is 30Q per person. You don't need a guide, just go straight to the cave and enjoy exploring.

Went to the tubing on the river in a hot afternoon , solo with a guide . Real good experience, nice little river rapids at some point and in the complet jungle . 45min long, you come back in tuktuk after . I recommend trying it !!

If wanting to see the bats at sunset, be sure to get there before 6pm as they stop letting people in the gates then
Alessia M — Google review
We went to see the bats coming out which supposedly happens at 615 or 630. At 710 after waiting around for an hour someone told us that they don't turn the lights off to trigger the bats leaving until everyone is out of the cave. There were two guys doing who knows what in the cave so about 40 people were just there waiting for them to leave. No one does or says anything. It's insanity.

Aguateca is a city located at 190 meters above sea level in the Usumacinta River basin, neighboring Dos Pilas. The city is surrounded by cliffs, offering visitors breathtaking views. Accessible only by private boat from Sayaxche, it's free to visit but not well-maintained. Despite unimpressive sculptures, the giant and unique rift is a must-see for those in good physical condition.
Impressive classical period archeological site. Bring good hiking shoes as there is a lot of uphill hiking. To get here you need to take a boat trip through the Petexbatún lagoon, which will give you the chance to see a lot of wildlife (birds, iguanas, turtles, etc). Sadly, the site is very abandoned by the govt and lacks proper infrastructure.

Our guide was Jose Moreno and he was absolutely amazing! He was very knowledgeable, friendly and had a great sense of humor. We did the sunset tour for Tikal by accident. We meant to get the day tour, but our group was so glad that we got the sunset tour. We could all tell this was something Jose cared about. He did such an awesome job explaining the history and making it interesting and engaging. He pointed out a lot of wildlife (we saw a toucan, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, a red breasted hawk, and many others). Other guides (from other companies) were not as helpful for their groups, but Jose was very attentive and aware of our group. This tour was well worth the money we spent and we would gladly do it again!!!

What an amazing adventure visiting the Mayan Ruins in Tikal. Marlon was excellent. Our lunch was great. The experience, unforgettable! Marlon’s knowledge is vast! He shared some many details and history with us. He made sure to point out the various birds, monkeys, trees, in addition to all of the details about the ruins. The sunset was beautiful and the culmination of a wonderful day! Please use GEM Trips. You won’t be disappointed!

so glad I booked this trip with GEM travels for the sunrise experience. The trip ran smoothly from start to finish. Marlon is like the David Attenborough of Guatemala, so knowledgeable of the surroundings and history. Marlon shows he really cares for the rainforest & environment & wildlife which is Very heartwarming to see. The experience was truly one of a kind and Marlon took his time to show and tell everything. When other tour groups rushed off, we were able to take our time to take in the sounds/sights/smells. It was truely a sensory experience. I would highly HIGHLY recommend this trip to anyone! Thank you so much Marlon for being our guide and being so hospitable. This has been unforgettable experience! :)

Quaint church with a quiet little plaza with a bandstand. Feels very Spanish colonial still. Really nice cultural centre point of the island with a couple of the original stelae from the late mayan era when it was Nojpeten, the last town to fall to the Spanish.

As the capital of the Petén district Flores houses a Cathedral church that administers the Petén diocese. The Cathedral is a rather small and underwhelming structure located in the central plaza which sits on the highest point of the island, as was usual in colonial times. Even though it is small, it's perhaps the only building of note in Flores, and for that alone it deserves a visit, albeit, it may be a short one.

National park
Nature & Parks
Ixpanpajul is a laid-back jungle resort with a restaurant and various outdoor activities, including safaris. Visitors can enjoy the skywalk, which takes about 1.5 hours, and the canopy tour, which lasts around 30-40 minutes. It's suggested to start early in the morning to avoid the heat later in the day. While the canopy experience is enjoyable, it may be shorter than expected for those who have tried similar tours before.
We had the place to ourselves. The sky walk was Q750 for four persons including hotel pickup in Flores. This could be Q400 pp. and I would still do it. We saw both howler monkeys and thousands of butterflies, exotic grasshoppers and other interesting fauna. It is a breathtaking experience walking through and then above the trees, while the animals are so close. The trail was well-kempt overall. The hammocks at the view point are a nice touch. Even family members with vertigo felt safe.
Anders M — Google review
It's a beautiful place and has major potential, but we've had some issues. The company advertises a 2-hour canopy tour while it's only 6 cables and I can't imagine how it would take 2 hours, even for a bigger group. It should have been stated clearly as well as the approx. time for smaller groups. That being said, it was still fun.

A way overpriced access to a private rope bridge walkway. For one hour self-guided trek, we paid $25 per person. Wow! A rip-off. You can do a lot better things in Guatemala for $25- like a drive all the way to Tikal and back with a Guide.

Terrible place! IXPANPAJUL in Guatemala was a complete disappointment. The service is awful, everything is old and run-down, and the management does nothing. Oil from the zipline got on my clothes, and they were completely ruined. When I showed this to the management, they just laughed. A total waste of time and money. I do not recommend it to anyone!

Such an amazing experience! We did the 7 suspensions bridges or sky walk a little over 10 years ago and it was even more amazing than I remember this time around. The climb is definitely not for everyone and especially if you would have a hard time climbing stairs or fear of heights. The trails are what you would expect for being in the jungle…sometimes muddy trails, rock steps that can be slippery, hanging branches or fallen tree limbs - for us, this made the climb all the more authentic and exciting. We did see kids and people of all ages so it is absolutely doable, but I feel a fair warning should be given in advance to everyone about the difficulty level. As you climb higher the views from the suspension bridges gets even better. There are over 280 bird species there, monkeys, butterflies, and much more throughout. They do have some snacks and water bottles for sale at the visitor center, but I would bring your own if you plan on eating or having water.

Great spot to chill on Lake Petén. There is a couple of rope swings, as the name would imply, as well as a diving platform. There are numerous sitting areas including hammocks and tables with lots of shade available. Entry fee is 25qtz per person. They sell alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks at decent prices. Getting here is by way of boat, hire a water taxi or by a leisurely kayak paddle. There are numerous kayak rentals in Flores. Water quality seems good here, saw lots of fish and no floating trash. Did see two huge iguanas in the trees.

Such a fun activity!! The water was so warm. It’s $25 whether you swing or not. Plenty of seating, tables & hammock. Also diving platforms. They have food and drinks. We took a one way boat and the host ended up boating us back with an employee, but many people pay for round trip and get picked back up at a set time. I recommend 2 hours at least, but longer to chill.

Totally worth a visit. Apparently the standard boat price is 150 or 200 quetzales so you can’t get much lower than that. Good for about two hours. If you take a boat to just one of the towns on the other side of the lake it’s only a few quetzales.

Petencito Zoo, located in Peten Guatemala, offers a diverse range of animals and a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls. Visitors can enjoy interacting with adorable spider monkeys that are known to shake hands. Accessible by boat from Flores or by driving onto the Tayazal peninsula, the zoo provides a tranquil escape with its breathtaking boat ride and serene ambiance. The presence of wild animals roaming freely creates an immersive experience that sets it apart from traditional zoos.
A nice way to spend an hour or so in Flores. Easily accessible on one of the boats, ARCAS is an animal refuge centre. As rehabilitation is their main goal, you won't see the majority of the animals they work with, but they have a few that sadly can't be rehabilitated and those are the ones you see as you walk around. There is a small museum before you start the trail that explains how they work and gives some information on the natural history and animals of Guatemala too. Each animal has its own story and is well looked after. Very informative place, lovely to see the animals, and great to support their excellent work. It's not very expensive, there's a small shop on site, and it takes a little less than an hour to explore (the boat usually waits for you).

Not to be confused with ARCAS. Penecito is a very very sad place Shld be illegal to have this type of animal prison This is def not a shelter The animals live on cement,in small spaces Sometimes jst the one by itself, lonely. They do not look happy at all. The tigrillo is clearly not well.

If you need a little get away just to breathe or reconnect with yourself I'd say you've found the place. For me it wasn't just a zoo, the ambiance made it different, the boat ride to the zoo was breath taking and then just walking about the zoo was just relaxing!!! You've got to experience it yourself!

Interesting and let you experience the wild life of the area. Several types of beautiful birds, few cats including impressive puma and Jaguar. We arrived by boat as part of a 2 hour trip around the lake Peten.

Beautiful place. Although small it has great variety of animals and the space is taken care of. The island is great. And it's not so expensive.
