Ancient Ruins
Templo IV in Tikal, Guatemala is a must-visit for travelers interested in Mayan history and breathtaking views. This ancient pyramid, built around 741 CE, stands at 65 meters tall, making it the tallest of its kind in the region. Climbing Templo IV offers visitors stunning sunrise views and a unique perspective of the surrounding jungle. Guided tours bring the ruins to life with insights into Maya history and the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area.
Our guide referred to this as Temple IV, and did not give or know its actual name. It was the first temple we visited and we were super pleased to climb to the top and look at at the rest of the temples on the horizon, poking above the jungle below, imagining the Millennium Falcon to come screaming over the tree tops (yes, this is the Rebel Base scene on Yavin). A bit of a climb to a partially overgrown temple, the age is apparent by the rocks and where some have crumbed away leaving rounded edges. The stairs on the temple itself are very steep (all temples were) and we gained access through climbing a wooden staircase erected along the perimeter

It was an amazing experience; we took the 4 am tour with a guide, it was amazing be prepared to walk the terrain was rough and muddy since it rained the Night before; we saw the temples, ruins under the stars and saw the sunrise ! For the morning tour bring a small flashlight if you can, we used our phones but it's better to conserve the battery; apply lots of mosquito repellent! Lots of walking and climbing upstairs
Sonia D — Google review
This is also known as temple IV and is the farthest that most people go. There’s a little bit of stuff to see beyond it, but not that much. This temple is famous because it is the one that the park allows visitors to climb up on before dawn and watch the sunrise over the forest with the other temples in the foreground. If you plan to do this, bring a good flashlight because it could take 45 minutes to an hour or more, depending on how fast you walk, and it will all be in the dark. Once you get there, people sit on the steps of the temple facing east And watches the sunrises. Coatis come through looking for food, so that is kind of cool, and the dawn chorus of birds here is fantastic. On the way out, you may get lucky and hear the howler monkeys beginning to wake up and take their claim to their territories before they go out forging. This is one of the unique experiences at Tikal.
Steve T — Google review
Truly a great set of impressive Mayan ruins. Best done with a guide for the historical details. If you have time and a vehicle, also go on to Uaxactan ruins.
Keith J — Google review
Very beautiful and interesting temple complex, which is surrounded by a forrest. Here you can easily spend the whole day and immerse yourself in the life of the Maya. Chitzen Itza could be considered as the boring brother. Scenes from Star Wars: Episode IV were filmed here.
Robert M — Google review
The place to see the sunrise in Tikal is somewhat remote Templo IV. And even when it's cloudy and foggy, this is a magnificent, almost mystical experience. If you then see a group of breakfast howler monkeys passing by, your day cannot go wrong.
Koen — Google review
In the beginning of this year I visited Tikal, an impressive archaeological Maya site, located in the dense and mysterious jungle of Guatemala. 🇬🇹 It is one of Guatemala’s most famous destinations but still less visited than the Maya sites in Mexico. 📸 I loved going out with a guide of Tikal Go, as the ruins come to life and you learn about the Maya history. Besides that, you will discover the jungle environment around you so much better, with countless monkeys, coatis, butterflies and species of birds. 🐒🦋🦅 Enjoy the pictures and check out the article if you want to learn more about a trip to Tikal. Can’t wait to go on new adventures with Tikal Go to discover more Maya sites in this area. 😍
Noureddine H — Google review
If you are interested in these keywords such as Maya civilization, historical sites, jungles, nature, history, and walking, I recommend you visit here. I chose an English guide because I can't speak Spanish. If you don't have enough historical knowledge, I hope you'll be with the guide. There is a way for people to walk, but walking alone is likely to risk getting lost. I went with four people, including a guide. If there is an employee you really want to see, it is recommended to tell him in advance before the guide starts explaining. + The view of climbing the highest temple gave me a new feeling. At that time, I can't believe and imagine that the Mayans built these buildings and climbed up to these heights using the stone steps. We, human in these days can climb up to the top through just wooden stairs…!

Tikal National Park

National park
Sights & Landmarks
Tikal National Park is a vast jungle area housing ancient Mayan temples and ceremonial ruins dating back to 900 BCE. The city of Tikal was once a small settlement that grew into one of the most powerful Mayan kingdoms, dominating politics, economy, and military for over 700 years. By the 9th century, however, the peak of Mayan civilization had passed, leading to a crisis and collapse in the region.
One of the most unforgettable places I have ever visited on planet Earth is Tikal, nestled deep within the heart of a lush, vibrant jungle in Guatemala. We arrived there just after a refreshing rainstorm, which had left the entire area smelling fresh and the greenery even more alive and vivid. The air was filled with the sounds of dripping leaves and distant calls of exotic birds, creating an atmosphere that felt almost magical. What made the experience truly special was that we had almost the entire site to ourselves, allowing us to explore the ancient ruins in a peaceful, almost reverent silence. Walking among the towering pyramids, temples, and plazas that once stood as a thriving city of the ancient Maya was awe-inspiring. The intricate carvings and massive stone structures told stories of a rich history and advanced civilization that thrived over a thousand years ago. Every step felt like stepping back in time, and I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the ancient builders. During our exploration, we also enjoyed the lively sounds of the jungle, and to our delight, we saw howler monkeys and spider monkeys swinging effortlessly through the treetops. Watching these playful creatures in their natural habitat added an extra layer of wonder to the experience, reminding us of the jungle’s vibrant biodiversity. Their calls echoed through the canopy, blending seamlessly with the sounds of the rain and the wind. Visiting Tikal was more than just an archaeological tour; it was a journey into history, nature, and adventure all rolled into one incredible experience. The sense of mystery and ancient grandeur combined with the lively jungle environment made it a truly unforgettable destination. I left with a deep appreciation for the ancient Maya civilization and a renewed love for the natural world surrounding it. It’s a place I will always cherish and look forward to visiting again someday.
Justin V — Google review
Wonderful experience. We were there for 4-5 hours and saw about 70% of the monuments/temples. All of the temples are amazing as well as the other structures.
Ben B — Google review
Tikal National Park is truly one of a kind! 🌿✨ Walking through this ancient wonder feels like stepping back in time. The towering Mayan temples rise above the jungle canopy, offering breathtaking views that are perfect for quiet reflection and meditation. It’s not just the history that makes Tikal special — it’s the atmosphere. The peaceful surroundings allow you to disconnect from the world and connect with nature in a profound way. Every corner offers something magical, from the incredible architecture to the melodies of exotic birds and the rustle of wildlife moving through the jungle. 🦜🐒 Whether you climb to the top of Temple IV to watch the sunrise or simply sit and enjoy the serenity of the jungle, Tikal leaves you with a sense of awe and peace. It’s a place to enjoy the view, feel the history, and embrace the abundant wildlife all around you. A must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Guatemala — a land of wonder, meditation, and unforgettable beauty. 🌎💚

Absolutely beautiful!!! A must see in my opinion. Very well maintained paths to get to the sites. Stairs to climb buildings are very safe and sturdy even if your afraid of heights. I would highly recommend hiring a guide to take you around. Bring a camel backpack or plenty of water. You can purchase drinks and snacks at several spots once inside. Bring bug spray and sunscreen. Be prepared to walk about 5 miles to see the highlights with some decent uphill grades. Wear good closed toe shoes. My photos will give you a good idea of what you will see, SPECTACULAR VIEWS! Oh, and lots of wildlife, I saw spider monkeys, hiwler monkeys, a Tuscan, owl a tarantula and more!!!
Brian T — Google review
This place is magical. You can do a private tour, visit on your own, sunset tour or sunrise tour. You can climb many of the temples/ pyramids via wooden staircases. The tour guides provide great information. The views are beautiful. It’s clean and well preserved. The is security all over the grounds ensuring people respect the park. Loved it here. Happy I visited.
Jason D — Google review
Epic in just about every way, from the early morning growls of howler monkeys and the chorus of waking birds, to the centuries old structures that have been unearthed in the jungle. Go early for sunrise, buy your tickets online and explore these massive grounds of the national park. Only an hour away from the small town island of Flores, there are lots of tour companies that you can visit with. A bucket list experience, worth visiting at least once. Bring water and snacks as there aren’t many options once you are on your way.
Jacob G — Google review
Guatemala was wonderful in many ways I personally love our trip to Peten. It was safe, beautiful, but it was very hot and humid. You need to be very hydrate for this trip. You need to buy a plane ticket from Guatemala City to peten and your tour guide will pick you up at the airport to your destination. There’s many ways to go so do your research before heading there.
Marian A — Google review
Beautiful Mayan site in the heart of the jungle. Unfortunately it rained the entire day which isn’t great for climbing the structures (can be slippy) or walking around as there’s not too much shelter on/near the pyramids. Still worth a visit and great to hear about the history from a local guide. It’s quite expensive to go to but worth it. You need your passport or ID to buy entry ticket from the ticket booth.

TIKAL National Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Ancient Ruins
575 sq km of jungle terrain with thousands of ancient Maya structures, including the city of Tikal.
By far the most amazing and impressive place I've ever been to. One day was certainly not enough time to explore Tikal, so I'm already planning to go back for a longer visit. I highly recommend doing the sunrise tour - it will stimulate all your senses.
Pablo J — Google review
Less touristy than chichen itza and cooler. You can actually climb these! 5/5! Even cheaper with more to see. Do it!

Very nice place you can feel its energy, get a guide they are very knowlegable

Underrated beautiful place, for true archeology lovers, maya ancient city, you won’t know it’s huge and bigger than others, I suggest to read some facts about Tikal before going, it will blow your mind
William T — Google review
Better then Disney Epcot. No Donald and no margaritas but this place still comes out ahead
Guillermo V — Google review
This is by far one of the best and most historic Mayan site. The Pyramid is huge and the park is very well maintained. It’s a very large site and the main sites can take the best part of one day. You should hire a local guide to make the most of this spectacular site. If you love history and UNESCO sites then this is a great choice.
Devansh — Google review
Impressive place to visit. I recommend to take the morning tour, because sometimes in the middle of the day it can be very hot.
Ștefan R — Google review
Breathtakingly beautiful place. I easily explored for five hours. If budgeting is a priority for you, I would not bother with the sunrise tour. It's mostly in the dark and 95% of the time the sun will be obscured by fog. You won't see much sitting atop the big temple as the sun comes up because of the fog, if you elect to do it.. I hope you get clear skies 🙏🏻. I didn't do the sunset tour due to time constraints but I feel there would be far more to see if there are no rain clouds 😊. Get there for the regular park entry 6am it is still very quiet and the fog is beginning to lift. Head for the grand plaza immediately as this will be the busiest spot later in the day. After that I recommend either straight to the lost world pyramid or the big temple (I believe it is temple 6). I had the big temple to myself at around 9am. If you are taking the local collectivo taxis to and from Flores please don't let them charge you more than 50 Quetzals. Even that is too much. 30-40 is better. If you want to see spider monkeys they seem to hang out at the trees next to the stairs at the lost world pyramid. This truly is a beautiful place, take your time and soak in the incredible scope of Tikal 🥹😍

What a nice excursion! At one of the exit trails in Tayasal I found a friendly dog who followed me all the way to the Viewpoint and Chechenal Beach and back. The views are not spectacular but I enjoyed the wall through the rainforest. There is a guy who asks signing in a book before taking the stairs to the mirador, but in my case he didn't ask for money.
Karles S — Google review
The best view-to-effort ratio you can get, haha. Absolutely a must when visiting Flores! It only takes about 20 minutes of walking to get all the way up, and the view from the top is totally worth it. You get snove trees and can see the whole island and the surrounding lake. Great place for sunset.
Petr Č — Google review
The best to look out in all of Flores! This amazing viewpoint is located in a remote and serene part of San Miguel, and it only takes a short 15 minute walk from the lake shore to get here. This is a wonderful spot to watch the sunrise or sunset, or just to get an amazing view of Flores Island. Make sure to bring your camera to take lots of photos, and if you are lucky, you will get to hear the sounds of the incredible howler monkeys. This Mirador is a must visit if you are coming to Flores. There are several steps, but get in here should be easy for people of all ages.
Brent T — Google review
Great views! Take the boat from Flores to San Miguel (Q10 per person). Then walk about 15 minutes to reach the Mirador (there are some signs but not many, so follow the trail which at times can be uphill or muddy). Then you sign in at the Mirador, it's free, quite a few wooden steps to the top but the view is great!
M D — Google review
This was a cute short excursion from Flores! Take a lancha to San Marcos for Q10 each way, takes maybe 5 minutes. Then walk up for about 20 minutes, boat driver and locals helped me with directions. Super simple to get to! The mirador is some steps, takes a few minutes to climb. And then at the top there's a colorful platform painted with Guatemalan jungle animals and temples. You leave your shoes at the bottom, so wear socks to protect your feet if you want. Loved the views! Got to see many birds, boats, and an airplane landing. Took me maybe 2 hours total from Flores and back.
Maddi P — Google review
10Q each to take a public lancha to San Miguel from Isla de Flores. Then a short hike here. The mirador is actually the site of a temple and there are excavations and investigations taking place nearby.
Justin D — Google review
Beautiful viewing platform. Little bit of a walk from San Miguel. Head to the edge of the town and the path carries on a dirt road out of the town.
Zac E — Google review
This lookout named after one of the Mayan Kings has definitely a great landscape. You can get there in boat from Flores and the price is very cheap, especially if you book a tour to all the different places the lake has. It was built in a Mayan pyramid that wasn't restored after it was discovered. It is a great experience to see such a beautiful landscape from a Mayan ruin that has so many stories.

Great place to have a chilled afternoon. 25Q entry and we paid 150Q for a boat return for 2 of us.
Harry C — Google review
Great little family run deck and rope swing. You can get a good bit of distance, also there is a diving board. We ended up spending most of the day there relaxing and swimming.
Joel ( — Google review
Great spot to chill on Lake Petén. There is a couple of rope swings, as the name would imply, as well as a diving platform. There are numerous sitting areas including hammocks and tables with lots of shade available. Entry fee is 25qtz per person. They sell alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks at decent prices. Getting here is by way of boat, hire a water taxi or by a leisurely kayak paddle. There are numerous kayak rentals in Flores. Water quality seems good here, saw lots of fish and no floating trash. Did see two huge iguanas in the trees.
Warren H — Google review
a fantastic visit to Jorge’s rope swing. Super easy to get to just a boat ride from Flores main island. Lots of jumping spots and places to chill out too. A great place to make friends and have fun!
Chelsea G — Google review
Beautiful place with good view. Nice to swim and jump in the water. There are drinks and snacks avaliable, basic but okay! No hammocks were there. All seats without pillows. So not very comfy. Very simple toilet. Reception was not very friendly but also not English speaking.
Vedran B — Google review
Such a fun activity!! The water was so warm. It’s $25 whether you swing or not. Plenty of seating, tables & hammock. Also diving platforms. They have food and drinks. We took a one way boat and the host ended up boating us back with an employee, but many people pay for round trip and get picked back up at a set time. I recommend 2 hours at least, but longer to chill.
Nicole G — Google review
Totally worth a visit. Apparently the standard boat price is 150 or 200 quetzales so you can’t get much lower than that. Good for about two hours. If you take a boat to just one of the towns on the other side of the lake it’s only a few quetzales.
Jonathan L — Google review
We got there by taking a boat from Flores. Don’t pay more than a 100 Q The entrance fee is 25 Q Very nice place with lots of hammocks and chairs. You can buy there beer and food. I really recommend bringing a snack with you. The jump rope to the water was really cool! Very quite place to enjoy the nature peacefully

Mayra A — Google review
Quaint church with a quiet little plaza with a bandstand. Feels very Spanish colonial still. Really nice cultural centre point of the island with a couple of the original stelae from the late mayan era when it was Nojpeten, the last town to fall to the Spanish.
Benjamin C — Google review
As the capital of the Petén district Flores houses a Cathedral church that administers the Petén diocese. The Cathedral is a rather small and underwhelming structure located in the central plaza which sits on the highest point of the island, as was usual in colonial times. Even though it is small, it's perhaps the only building of note in Flores, and for that alone it deserves a visit, albeit, it may be a short one.

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Petencito Zoo, located in Peten Guatemala, offers a diverse range of animals and a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls. Visitors can enjoy interacting with adorable spider monkeys that are known to shake hands. Accessible by boat from Flores or by driving onto the Tayazal peninsula, the zoo provides a tranquil escape with its breathtaking boat ride and serene ambiance. The presence of wild animals roaming freely creates an immersive experience that sets it apart from traditional zoos.
A nice way to spend an hour or so in Flores. Easily accessible on one of the boats, ARCAS is an animal refuge centre. As rehabilitation is their main goal, you won't see the majority of the animals they work with, but they have a few that sadly can't be rehabilitated and those are the ones you see as you walk around. There is a small museum before you start the trail that explains how they work and gives some information on the natural history and animals of Guatemala too. Each animal has its own story and is well looked after. Very informative place, lovely to see the animals, and great to support their excellent work. It's not very expensive, there's a small shop on site, and it takes a little less than an hour to explore (the boat usually waits for you).
Rachel H — Google review
Not to be confused with ARCAS. Penecito is a very very sad place Shld be illegal to have this type of animal prison This is def not a shelter The animals live on cement,in small spaces Sometimes jst the one by itself, lonely. They do not look happy at all. The tigrillo is clearly not well.

If you need a little get away just to breathe or reconnect with yourself I'd say you've found the place. Our guide was Jose Moreno and he was absolutely amazing! He was very knowledgeable, friendly and had a great sense of humor. We did the sunset tour for Tikal by accident. We meant to get the day tour, but our group was so glad that we got the sunset tour. We could all tell this was something Jose cared about. He did such an awesome job explaining the history and making it interesting and engaging. He pointed out a lot of wildlife (we saw a toucan, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, a red breasted hawk, and many others). Other guides (from other companies) were not as helpful for their groups, but Jose was very attentive and aware of our group. This tour was well worth the money we spent and we would gladly do it again!!!

What an amazing adventure visiting the Mayan Ruins in Tikal. Marlon was excellent. Our lunch was great. The experience, unforgettable! Marlon’s knowledge is vast! He shared some many details and history with us. He made sure to point out the various birds, monkeys, trees, in addition to all of the details about the ruins. The sunset was beautiful and the culmination of a wonderful day! Please use GEM Trips. You won’t be disappointed!

so glad I booked this trip with GEM travels for the sunrise experience. The trip ran smoothly from start to finish. Marlon is like the David Attenborough of Guatemala, so knowledgeable of the surroundings and history. Marlon shows he really cares for the rainforest & environment & wildlife which is Very heartwarming to see. The experience was truly one of a kind and Marlon took his time to show and tell everything. When other tour groups rushed off, we were able to take our time to take in the sounds/sights/smells. It was truely a sensory experience. I would highly HIGHLY recommend this trip to anyone! Thank you so much Marlon for being our guide and being so hospitable. This has been unforgettable experience! :)

This tour was amazing!! You could tell this tour company really cares about the wildlife and preserving the jungle. Marlon, our tour guide, was so knowledgeable and passionate about teaching us the history of the Mayan culture. He was very kind and attentive to all of our questions. I highly recommend booking with them. I don’t believe our experience would have been as great if we didn’t have him as our tour guide! Great food too! Book now, you won’t regret!

We absolutely loved the Sunrise Tour in Tikal! It was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Our guide Marlon was incredible – he shared his deep knowledge with so much passion and gave us fascinating insights into the history, geology, and wildlife of Tikal. Everything was perfectly organized: the transport was smooth, the food was excellent, and every detail was handled with great care. We truly had an unforgettable time and felt very well taken care of. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience!

Excellent tour! Marlon was very knowledgeable, not only about the ruins but the jungle, environment and biology. He and his wife provided 2 breakfasts which were needed to keep our energy up. It was a lot of walking and climbing, but well worth it.

The small group allowed for a more complete understanding of the nature and history. I highly recommend booking with them.

Ixpanpajul is a laid-back jungle resort with a restaurant and various outdoor activities, including safaris. Visitors can enjoy the skywalk, which takes about 1.5 hours, and the canopy tour, which lasts around 30-40 minutes. It's suggested to start early in the morning to avoid the heat later in the day. While the canopy experience is enjoyable, it may be shorter than expected for those who have tried similar tours before.
We had the place to ourselves. The sky walk was Q750 for four persons including hotel pickup in Flores. This could be Q400 pp. and I would still do it. We saw both howler monkeys and thousands of butterflies, exotic grasshoppers and other interesting fauna. It is a breathtaking experience walking through and then above the trees, while the animals are so close. The trail was well-kempt overall. The hammocks at the view point are a nice touch. Even family members with vertigo felt safe.

It's a beautiful place and has major potential, but we've had some issues. The company advertises a 2-hour canopy tour while it's only 6 cables and I can't imagine how it would take 2 hours, even for a bigger group. It should have been stated clearly as well as the approx. time for smaller groups. That being said, it was still fun.

A way overpriced access to a private rope bridge walkway. For one hour self-guided trek, we paid $25 per person. Wow! A rip-off. You can do a lot better things in Guatemala for $25- like a drive all the way to Tikal and back with a Guide.

Terrible place! IXPANPAJUL in Guatemala was a complete disappointment. The service is awful, everything is old and run-down, and the management does nothing. Oil from the zipline got on my clothes, and they were completely ruined. When I showed this to the management, they just laughed. A total waste of time and money. I do not recommend it to anyone!

It's a beautiful park where you can fully enter in the forest and see animals like monkey, spiders, ... Absolutely suggested.

Such an amazing experience! We did the 7 suspensions bridges or sky walk a little over 10 years ago and it was even more amazing than I remember this time around. The climb is definitely not for everyone and especially if you would have a hard time climbing stairs or fear of heights. The trails are what you would expect for being in the jungle…sometimes muddy trails, rock steps that can be slippery, hanging branches or fallen tree limbs - for us, this made the climb all the more authentic and exciting. We did see kids and people of all ages so it is absolutely doable, but I feel a fair warning should be given in advance to everyone about the difficulty level. As you climb higher the views from the suspension bridges gets even better. There are over 280 bird species there, monkeys, butterflies, and much more throughout. They do have some snacks and water bottles for sale at the visitor center, but I would bring your own if you plan on eating or having water.

Great canopy, strenuous walk. You should be in reasonable shape take sneakers or hiking shoes and enough water
Uri K — Google review
The guides were extremely friendly and welcoming even though I was a bit apprehensive jumping off the first zipline. They helped us do the "Superman" and upside down which was a very different way of viewing the biosphere but we super fun. They even allowed me to zip with my GoPro to document the great time!

Aguateca is a city located at 190 meters above sea level in the Usumacinta River basin, neighboring Dos Pilas. The city is surrounded by cliffs, offering visitors breathtaking views. Accessible only by private boat from Sayaxche, it's free to visit but not well-maintained. Despite unimpressive sculptures, the giant and unique rift is a must-see for those in good physical condition.
Impressive classical period archeological site. Bring good hiking shoes as there is a lot of uphill hiking. To get here you need to take a boat trip through the Petexbatún lagoon, which will give you the chance to see a lot of wildlife (birds, iguanas, turtles, etc). Sadly, the site is very abandoned by the govt and lacks proper infrastructure.

Cuevas de B'omb'il Pek offers an exhilarating and attractive experience, with beautiful caves and friendly, knowledgeable guides providing clear instructions. Visitors are advised to bring water, comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and repellent. While the entrance area may need cleaning, the tour itself is very affordable. The caves are not always open to the public but contacting the managers can provide access. A 30-minute walk leads to the first cave where helmets and flashlights are provided for exploration.

Grutas de Lanquín is a network of limestone caves filled with stunning stalactites and rock formations resembling animals. The caves are home to thousands of bats, making it an off-the-beaten-path adventure for those seeking a unique experience. Visitors can choose to explore the large and fascinating caves with or without a guide. While somewhat daunting, the tour is incredibly thrilling as you venture into the cave by candlelight, guided by knowledgeable staff who ensure your safety.
Amazing place to visit. We stopped here on our way back from Semuc. 30q for foreigners and 10 for parking. The caves are amazing, there are lights inside and you can enter without a guide. We were alone exploring the amazing huge cave system. Very worth it!

Unexplored caves where a river borns, nature reigns here, there is around 400 meters with ilumination and from there is full darkness and it depends on you to explore, there is also a underground cenote. Amazing place.

What an adventure. This cavetour is crazy. We were very early so we kinda had a private tour just the guide and me and my girlfriend. it was insane for me to see that we entered the cave just with some candles - no helmet, no swimvest, no flashlights nothing. While it is somewhat frightening it is also super exciting. The Guide always tells you what to do and what to look out for. you can bring a waterproof phone or camera if you like. you will have to swimm, climb and probably hurt yourself a little while doing so. I recommend wearing water shoes. If you don't have any you can rent them there or you can buy them from a local for about 5$ a pair. There are also families selling food and little children selling chocolate close to the entrance. Buy it! the food is great and the chocolate is amazing and totally handmade (we saw that first hand) and the people living there are very poor. all in all an amazing place and a great adventure.

A HUGE cave, amazing!!! You walk inside unsupervised and you can easily get lost there. Even though they have lights installed, a torch is a must. Extremely slippery, wear proper shoes. The parking is 10Q and entrance is 30Q per person. You don't need a guide, just go straight to the cave and enjoy exploring.

We went to see the bats coming out which supposedly happens at 615 or 630. At 710 after waiting around for an hour someone told us that they don't turn the lights off to trigger the bats leaving until everyone is out of the cave. There were two guys doing who knows what in the cave so about 40 people were just there waiting for them to leave. No one does or says anything. It's insanity.

What an amazing place! From my understanding it’s the first hotel ever in the area. It has expanded plenty since it’s inception and there are photos in the lobby of what it used to look like. The place is full of history, but their rooms are spacious and family friendly with very accommodating prices. If you’re looking for a peaceful stay with great views of the river and access to their waterfall and a visit to Juancho Alvarado (their rescue crocodile, who is set to be released back to the wild), then look no further. There’s a wonderful pool close to the waterfall that is set as part of the river that you can swim in. The staff was super helpful and friendly. This is a family friendly establishment where you can feel as one with nature. If you’re looking for loud partying, this is not the place for you, but if you’re looking to enjoy the natural wonders of Semuc Champey, this place can be home during your stay.

Good location, easy to get to in any type of car with the new road. Just a little noise from in the morning from said road. Staff was nice and you don't pay entrance for the waterfalls and discount price for the cave. No wifi though. They told me at check in that there was electricity only from 6-10pm and the some hours fater midday but failed to mention that there isn't a single plug in the rooms. Phones etc. can only be charged in the restaurant or reception. Not ideal.

filthy. no wifi. sheets had holes and didn’t fit the bed. light bulbs burnt out. power only a few hours a day. no outlets in our room. staff indifferent. but it is super cheap and across the street from the river. don’t stay here…..go to greengos instead!
Sam M — Google review
Absolutely excellent location for visiting Samuc Champey. You do not want to make the journey from Lanquin everyday to visit the pools or the caves, so I highly recommend staying here for days you plan to be visiting Samuc Champey. They also offered us a free ride from Lanquin when we arrived. Stayed in the dorm rooms but no one else was there so it was basically a really cheap private room. It was understandably a bit damp feeling but I just aired it out as much as possible. There is no power or lights for most of the day. I was there in August and they turned the lights on when it got dark at around 6ish pm and then turned everything off again at 9:30. So you have to be strategic in charging any devices. There is no wifi so it's not like you need to charge a lot, but you will want to have something for photos at Samuc Champey. Also there is no kitchen. The meals are around 30 quetzales. Nothing fancy but it's all decent. There is great swimming in the river right in front of the property and a fun rope swing. The manager is super friendly and helpful in general. He did a lot of work to arrange for us to catch our super early shuttle out of Lanquin. He also offered a fun cave tour package with tubing back to the property is well worth it.

We ended up staying here by accident since our first choice turned us down because of my son, but I'm so glad things turned out the way they did. This place was great, everyone was so nice and our room was literally steps away from the river! And about a 10 minute walk to the caves and the national park Semuc Champey.

Semuc Champey is a stunning natural attraction located in the Lank municipal district along the Cahabon river. It features a 500-meter-long natural limestone bridge, with the Cahabon river flowing underneath for about 300 meters. The site is renowned for its picturesque stepped pools formed by the bridge, offering cool, turquoise waters perfect for swimming.
One of the most beautiful places that I’ve ever been to. Even getting to the place is an adventure. The pools themselves are crystal clear and beautiful and provide a nice and relaxing getaway from the hike. The locals fair and along the route have wonderful food to buy. The trek to the actual pools is moderately steep and rocky and the ride to even get to the area is bumpy. And then of course the hike up the mountain after the pools would be more strenuous. Definitely would not recommend for anyone who has severe back issues or is unstable. But for anyone that loves adventure this place is great!

We took Semu Champey tour and it was absolutely amazing. I think our experience was even better because our tour guide. Jungle boy is very funny, enthusiastic and outgoing. He was born there and therefore he knows everything you need during this tour. The tour took 8 hours around and thankfully it didn’t rain until the end of it. We did things we’ve never done before and they were beyond our fears. We went through a cave with full of water, dark and small, he made sure everything was fine the whole time, and you really can do the jumps and sliding if you want. Aside of jumping from a swing and tubing for a few minutes, we hiked had a big included lunch and finally we swam in the nine pools available for swimming and jumping. We def think that without a guide this is not imposible and even less enjoyable.
Carlos P — Google review
Absolutely amazing! Observe that there is no need for a tour guide. I recommend using the parking (if you are in your own vehicle) next to the entrance (Q10) rather than right after bridge (Q50). The hike up to the viewpoint is strenuous, but IMHO worth it. Dogs only allowed if emotional support documentation available.

We went to Semuc with our hostel and we thought it was amazing. A natural beauty. The pools were very clear and clean despite raining a few days before. The view point is great and worth the climb. Would recommend.

Gorgeous place. Our trip was organised by Mayan Gateway with local guide Eli. We climbed the stairs to the Mirador first - took about 20 minutes- which was hot and sweaty and hard on the lungs and legs but worth it for the view and made the swimming afterwards especially nice. There are toilets and changing rooms near the pools as well as lockers (bring your own lock) but most people seem to leave bags on the bank within line of sight. Don't worry about swim shoes - the rocks are smooth and the water is deep. There were a few lifeguards too.

Genuinely the most beautiful place I’ve ever visited. Sensational pools, beautiful views and magical mountain scenery. The cost for entrance is 50GTQ (£5), which can be paid on arrival without booking. When you arrive, you can pick up reasonably priced drinks and food from street vendors before entering the park. The walk to the viewing point is c. 30-40 minutes up stairs / rocks. It’s relatively slippery, so go carefully. We drove the whole way to Lanquin from Flores. It’s possible in an average rental (4x4 not needed), but is a challenging drive. Always stick to the main roads no matter what your navigation says, as the side roads are very sketchy (steep, slippery, big rocks, etc). Avoid driving at night, as lots of people / animals / cars use the roads, which are not lit. The entrance to the park is accessed via a 10 minute shuttle from Lanquin, which costs around 50-100 GTQ for a return trip. You could drive it in a 4x4 (or possibly in a normal car, with a high risk tolerance), but I’d recommend going via a shuttle, which can be easily found in Lanquin or via your hostel. We didn’t do the cave tours and were perfectly happy at the main section - you can access everywhere aside from the caves in the normal fee.

Fantastic shuttle service! The drivers were responsible, and both trips I took with Coban travels left and arrived right on time. The shuttles were also super comfortable with spacious seats, plenty of legroom, and good AC. Highly recommend!

We took from the transport Lanquin to Panajachel. From start to finish, this transport service was impressively punctual and professional. The driver arrived exactly on time, eliminating any stress about delays. The entire experience was seamless—no waiting, no last-minute scrambling, just smooth, efficient service.

I used Coban Travels from Guatemala City to Lanquin and back again. The shuttle left 1.5hr late from Guatemala City which was super annoying. Traffic was bad but that, of course, wasn’t the fault of the company. Both shuttles I went on were uncomfortable and small. Arm rests would make a big difference. Seatbelts too would make it feel a lot safer. And there’s certainly no leg room! The drive itself was unpleasant as it wasn’t very smooth with sudden jerking stops. The driver was nice and helpful and it was a reasonable price compared to what others were paying. Overall, an uncomfortable ride but I doubt there’s be many better options!
Sophie H — Google review
Took 2 shuttles with them. The Shuttle from Flores to Lanquin was pretty full of people but the van was very nice and it was a comfortable journey. It takes like 9hrs to get there (with every company) but you stop at a McDonalds / Mall a bit after the middle of the journey. The shuttle from Lanquin to Pana was a suffering. The Van was comfortable but we had no Ac (with Ac the van wouldn't have the power to make the hills) so burning hot is a great description. The fact that on this journey you only stop in a gas station with poor quality food did not help. But overall it we did get to our destination and I don't really think Coban Travels are to blame directly since there were a lot of tourists from other company's in the same bus (all the company's share the same buses as I understand). It would be nice if Coban makes some pressure on them to at least change the place they stop though.

Took the shuttle from Guatemala City to Lanquin. Driver was friendly. The shuttle itself however is very small for the amount of seats and you have almost no space for your legs. For the price we paid and the reviews we’ve read, we would’ve expected some more comfort.

No comfort at all for our trip from Guatemala City to lanquin. Super old van, with to many people onboard. There wasn’t an aisle left, because of the extra chairs in the middle. A bit claustrophobic and not safe at all….

Sooo good! Well worth your time. We had a bazillion questions and our guide Alvaro never got stumped once! And we got to taste a variety of coffees and espressos, all included in the tour price. If you enjoy learning how things are made, Do it! You won’t regret it.

That was an interesting visit however the guide tour can of just tell her story a bit like a robot, answer our question but didn’t let us translate to the kids each time or didn’t try to make it fun for them. The coffee dégustation is something really interesting

Went here on a drizzly day. Took a 15 min bus ride from Cobán (1.50 gtq) Driver's assistant said last bus back was 3pm. Make sure to tell them your going to the coffee tour The employees were attentive. Umbrellas are available if you need one. The tour (75 gtq) lasted just over an hour. Our guide was super informative, patient and regularly checked to see if we had any questions. Best part was the coffee tasting at the end and the coffee was delicious.

Great stop on the way up to Semuc Champey! We loved our tour of the coffee farm and enjoyed tasting the coffee after too. The history of the farm which started with Germans who then left during the war was an interesting story as well. Highly recommend coming to visit to support the coffee farmer co-op community directly and to learn about one of the world’s favourite drinks!

Interesting to check out if you’re in the region. I’ve been to better coffee tours but it was fun to do the tasting nonetheless and it was clear that they put a lot of love and effort into what they do.

Really enjoyable tour, it was pretty quiet due to fewer tourists coming through. Had a walk around the plantation then a tasting session afterwards explaining all the different forms of preparation

It was our second visit after 2012. This place is awesome and it was a great visit for the kids as well. Staff knows very well what they are talking about, seeing all the orchids species is so great definitely worst the visit and the entry ticket

Beautiful orchid museum in a completely natural setting. Good place to learn about why and how orchids grow. Also the symbiotic nature of the bees to the orchids. The guide we were assigned was very knowledgeable, friendly and seemed personally involved with his job. Very family oriented business.

If you enjoy flowers and are yearning for some time in nature, a visit to Orquigonia is for you! We visited in October, and even though July and November are probably the best months to visit, we had a blast and got to see a lot of beautiful and interesting orchids, including the Monja Blanca. There is an opportunity to buy local artisanal products at the end of the tour, as well, and we really enjoyed our coffee that we bought.

A beautiful spot to get out of the concrete jungle and into the real jungle. They preserve orchids from all over Guatemala and have an incredible collection that you explore while walking around their beautifully crafted grounds. They are literally doing gods work and protecting the beautiful floral diversity of Guatemala. Totally worth a stop for a tour of the park (Q75/person) and a tea in the jungle after. The girls working the store were super helpful about other things to do in Coban. Get here by taking a bus from near the mall for Q3 and then stop at Casa Cacao on the way back to Coban to eat chocolate infused dishes.

It was the off-season when we visited so there was less to see but there's always something and this is a good place to support. About: The Orquigonia in Cobán Guatemala holds a special place as a botanical sanctuary dedicated to preserving the region's rich orchid diversity. It began with a vision to conserve these delicate flowers and educate visitors about their importance in local ecosystems. Orquigonia stands out for its extensive collection of orchid species, carefully curated to showcase the beauty and variety of these plants. The project originated from a passion for orchids and a desire to protect them from habitat destruction. Through education, conservation efforts, and stunning displays, Orquigonia has become a haven for orchid enthusiasts and a beacon of biodiversity preservation in Guatemala.

It's a good place to spend the time close to the nature and learning about flowers and especially "orquídeas". The staff it's really kind, young and passionate about thier work. Also, one of the girls working there have beautiful painting for sale. If you want to spend one night there they have camping area. Also, at the reception you can see really close to you..some hummingbirds.

Love it !!! It’s a beautiful place, I went on raining season but I enjoy it!! We met the owner and enjoy his stories. And the tea a the end of the tour. Orquídeas are seasonal so you only will see the ones that are on the time of your visit.
