The geographical features is breathtaking, I had an amazing time, also went to see the caves which were built in the 16th century, by the famous war lord Geragne Ahmed. I would definitely visit the place again, because the hiking was so much fun.
Meklit B — Google review
It's not worth travelling as it's too far and nothing interesting and difficult to walk to it, just a little bridge. Only the view is beautiful among mountains. If you have options, go on a real trip like Safari or Cultural to see authentic Ethiopia.
Habib — Google review
The views from this are spectacular..i highly recommend going here on a tour from addis ababa. Don't go with tour operators like viator, its a big ripoff, instead boom directly with local operators. I paid just 60USD for both debre lebanos and Portuguese bridge directly while its 80USD on viator
Chandra R — Google review
A very good place for site visitation and see some nature. Has a good waterfall and so many mountains and caves. It's one of good places to see if u can, the locals are good people and very nice.
Kalid S — Google review
It is one of the day trip place in Ethiopia. Two and half hour drive to the north part of Addis and you will reach the beautiful view. Portuguese Bridge is built in the 18th century. The water fall is beautiful rainy season time.
Birhanu M — Google review
Beautiful landscape overlooking a valley at the blue nile gorge You can go for a swim and shower at the waterfall in the dry season, hike the hills and interact with baboons! The nearby Ethio-German lodge has a great camping spot It's close to Addis so it can be a great day trip!
Liben A — Google review
Amazing in the rainy season. Park at the hotel. They do coffee etc. We were charged 200br each at the entrance. No receipt so could be a scam, correct me if I'm wrong. Well worth the trip from Addis.
Simon D — Google review
Quite a drive from Addis (2 and half hours), and a bit bumpy in places, but it is definitely worth it, and must be among the top options for day trips from Addis. There is a bridge, but in the right season, a raging river running under it, then over a huge waterfall off a massive cliff. Looking out over the cliff from various viewpoints is a spectacular view of the whole valley below for miles and miles. On top of all of that, there were dozens of baboons, which you get pretty close to!

Blue Nile Falls

Waterfall
Nature & Parks
The Blue Nile Falls, also known as Tis Abay in Amharic meaning "great smoke", is a majestic waterfall located on the upper course of the Blue Nile river in Ethiopia. Positioned about 30 kilometers downstream from Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, it is considered one of Ethiopia's most popular tourist destinations. The falls offer a breathtaking sight as the water plunges over the cliffs creating an impressive misty spray that shrouds the surroundings with a surreal beauty.
The Blue Nile Falls is a waterfall on the Blue Nile River in Ethiopia. It is called Tis Abay, which means ‘smoke abay’ in Amharic. It is located on the upper reaches of the river, about 30 km downstream from the city of Bahir Dar and Lake Tana. Some of the locals, especially the children, seem too used to tourists begging for money.
T. G — Google review
The falls are a real highlight during the raining season. The whole trip to get there is an adventure. You see how the locals live and walk through the primary forest. It’s very muddy, so bring proper shoes.
Melissa S — Google review
Great day trip from Bahir Dar. It takes about 2h drive and most of the road is pretty good. Amazing views of the waterfalls and you can get very very close to the water as well as right on the top edge of the falls. You will want to get a guide from the office at the beginning of the park, it costs 200bir. Our guide was very helpful and was definitely worth having him.
Lora K — Google review
The water flow has been severely reduced due to the dam, but the waterfalls and surroundings are still impressive and worth a visit. Take the long way for a nice moderate hike with some excellent views. The hassle of the merchant children following you the entire way is annoying though, especially since this is a paid tourist attraction.
Lars — Google review
The Blue Nile is locally known as 'Tis Abay' which means 'Great Smoke'. You will need to engage / pay a guide to bring you to the waterfall from the drop off point. It took about 20-30 minutes thereabout to walk on basically flat ground to reach the waterfall. Not strenuous. The waterfall was striking and beautiful well worth the walk
CK C — Google review
This is a place you must visit if you are close to bahir dar city. You will travel there by bus and then get a ticket. I recommend you to take a walk not a boat at the first way. So many kids will try to sell trinkets and if you want photo then you will have to pay for it. So I azdvice you to bring some cookies or candies, but the best would be to give them pen, pencil or notebook or book, anything for their school. Don't limit your time, enjoy it. Blue Nile falls will greet you with its power & beauty.
Eser S — Google review
Originally, the Blue Nile meandered away from Lake Tana before plunging violently over the side of a 400m (1,312ft) wide gorge into a chasm below. Unfortunately, due to hydroelectric projects upstream, the waterfall today is only a shadow of its former self.
Henok T — Google review
The beauty of Abay river water fall is breathtaking. If you are around Bahir Dar you should visit it. But you should consider the season, the rainy season Starts in June and ends in October.

Asheton St. Maryam Monastery | አሽተን ቅድስት ማርያም ገዳም

Mentioned on

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
Asheton St. Maryam Monastery, located at an elevation of 3150m atop Abune Yosef mountain, offers a unique experience for visitors. The monastery is accessed via a challenging five-hour climb from Lalibela or a shorter hike from the car park. The journey to the monastery provides stunning views of the dramatic mountain scenery and rock-hewn caves along the way. Visitors can also explore sacred artifacts such as a rare bible and holy crosses within the monastery.
Best place if you can I recommend hike to mountain it has best view
እዝራ — Google review
The journey to the monastery is much more enjoyable than the monastery itself. It’s another example of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s greed, asking for an entrance fee of 30 dollars. This is absolutely absurd, and I say this as someone who loves monasteries. But this fee is simply too much – it’s money wasted here. However, the surrounding area and the journey through the villages with stunning views of Lalibela and the surroundings are definitely worth it. If you take a tuk-tuk, you can have it stop at the best spots for photos.
Petr K — Google review
It’s 20$ usd cash per person to enter, which is extortionate. Not included with your 100$ church ticket. Wait for the lady at the blue sign to pay. Do not give money to anyone else except at the monastery entrance sign. The monastery itself is mildly interesting. The views of canyons and farms along the way are beautiful. The hike + visit will take you about 5 hours round trip including breaks, starting from the town center. Expect the usual tip hassling along the way, though much less than Lalibela proper. A guide is not needed, you can follow the route on google maps though there is a minor shortcut along a sketchy cliff trail you might not find on your own
A K — Google review
Though not intricately built as the churches in Lalibela, going to this place is worth it just for the experience of getting there and seeing the surrounding area. I would recommend going there in the early morning or late afternoon as the climb takes it toll. The road to the church is not yet built so beware. Take a three wheeled taxies to there from city center as it would be cheaper for there to wait for you when you get down or hike. enjoy.
Tesfa M — Google review
Amazing location for a little monastery, it’s worth the Climb here. The rocky mountaintop of this sacred mountain is beautiful and the 360° view of the surroundings spectacular.
Carlos O — Google review
I always being blessed visited Asheten maryiam monastery . Its the oldest monastery and the first construction of king lalibela him self in 9 and 10 century
Ethiopian T — Google review
Price update June 2019, it costs 350 birr. Not 200. The short 10min walk up to the monastery from the end of the road is nice as well as the views. They are building a roof and a museum, that is what I hope the money is going for, the Monastery it self is not going to wow anyone after all the churches of lalibela. Check the photo of the view, that is the best part. Also we paid 250 birr for the tuk tuk to take us there and back down to the centre of town, that is an adventure.
David M — Google review
Did the hike all the way up from town but when we got to the checkpoint we were told foreigners must pay $20 US each to continue the last bit to the ruins. The checkpoint guy would not relent. OK then, got in a good workout with some fine views, but, ah, no, we think we'll just hike back down and skip the silly foreigner's entry price.

The Church of St. George is a remarkable rock-hewn church located in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It is part of a group of churches connected by underground passageways and surrounded by a deep trench. Lalibela itself is considered one of the holiest cities in Ethiopia and was designed to be a New Jerusalem after the capture of Jerusalem in 1187. The Church of St.
Saint George Church is truly the highlight of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, and seeing it in person was just awe-inspiring. The way it’s carved perfectly into the rock in the shape of a cross is almost hard to believe. I was lucky to visit when it wasn’t too crowded, which made the experience even more special—calm, peaceful, and almost surreal ⛪️ it’s so much worth a visit!
Maria A — Google review
Stunning. The most iconic of the Lalībela churches. I was fortunate enough to be here for a Sunday morning service which was amazing to experience. As a bonus there were fewer people asking for food or money compared to the day before.
Ian W — Google review
The Extraordinary St. George Church in Lalibela Visiting the remarkable St. George Church in Lalibela was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Carved entirely out of a single rock in the shape of a cross, the church stands as a breathtaking testament to ancient craftsmanship, faith, and Ethiopian heritage. Its serene atmosphere and spiritual significance left us in awe.
Jessica H — Google review
🚨BE WARY of those Ethiopians on the hill top with a hut, next to St George. They tried to ask my friends pay for camera fee, which was already paid when we bought the entrance ticket. Bloody greedy people. Make sure your ticket indicates camera fee has been paid if you are bringing a camera (mobile phone camera not required to be paid) Otherwise this church is the most popular of all churches as it is really pretty! It's a small climb to enter and exit the church.
J — Google review
The most unusual of the eleven Rock-Hewn churches in Lalibela. A stunning church including the surrounding space that was carved downwards from volcanic rock. Need to see to appreciate this amazing architecture. The Church of St. George was constructed under the reign of King Lalibela in the 12th century. Must see
CK C — Google review
One of the most stunning places, I was blessed to visit. The rich History, the people, the inside sacred worshipping areas were something that one can only feel. The Priests are kind, the people are kind. This should be one of the wanders pf the world.
Maryam N — Google review
Truly one of my favorite church among eleven . Still my mind can’t believe that it was a solid rock and just a few centuries ago , people of Ethiopia cut off the rock a full size church . Unbelievable!! Don’t be lazy and visit a town of Lalibela and its mind blowing churches . But the way a ticket cost is two thousand five hundred birr and it valid for five days . Basically you have a five full days to enjoy and dive into unique Ethiopian culture . Here is a two big celebrations in Lalibela during a year , first is Fasika (Easter) and another one Christmas 🎄
Vasyalifestyle — Google review
The most visually impressive of the Lalibela churches from the outside, due to its Greek cross form. Inside there is not much to see in this small structure. The approach, through a narrow trench, is unique. The symbolism of the church built to illustrate Noah's Ark is seen from the outside. As an added bonus, wildlife can be spotted here, such as monkeys, vultures, lizards, and eagles.

Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela

Sights & Landmarks
Lalibela is home to a remarkable collection of 11 rock-hewn churches, dating back to the 13th century. These churches are adorned with intricate frescoes and are believed to have been built with the help of angels. The complex labyrinth of tunnels and narrow passages connecting the churches adds to their mystique. Visitors can witness unique religious structures almost hidden in deep trenches or standing in open quarried caves.
Amazing and interesting facts we learn from our guide . Now I know everything in Ethiopia has a meaning related to religion . Even we go at sunrise to the church with locals which are celebrating St.George day. Lalibela is magic . Worth it every penny to go and visit that special place especially for Ethiopians .
R2D2 D — Google review
Beautiful place. The ticket price is $100 per person. I think it's too much. Before entering there, everyone recommended us a guide of 20 dollars per person but eventually we went alone and found the guide inside for 700 bir per person. We saw all the churches in one day. I recommend :)
Ewelina K — Google review
The entrance price went up to $100 in August 2024 and if you’re not on an organized tour expect to pay another $30 per day for a guide and then be prepared to have scores of people offer to ‘help’ or watch your flip flops when you have to leave them or just plain ask for money. It ruins the experience somewhat but Lalibela is special. Can’t help but wonder at the precision and craftsmanship of each of the rock hewn churches. I could have spent a few days exploring here but best seen during a Sunday service or a pilgrimage.
Ian W — Google review
Rock hewin churches of Lalibela is found the Eastern part of Amhara region. Lalibela was the political center of for along time and built by the Zagwe dynasty called kink Lalibela. Lalibela consists 11th rock hewin churches which are built from a single rock individually. The annual celebration of Lalibela is on December 21.
Abebaw E — Google review
World heritage site so worth a visit to be sure. Internal conflicts in Northern Ethiopia have decimated the tourism industry here which means there are no visitors and the economy is suffering. That also means that there are no crowds!! (When I went 12/2023 - there had been no violence for 4 months. Please check before you go to make sure it is still safe.) The churches are beautiful and the people lovely. Tickets are 100$ and my guide was 30$/day.
Richard B — Google review
Despite the awe-inspiring nature of the Rock-Hewn Churches in Lalibela, which is considered one of the six wonders of the world, I must express my deep disappointment with my personal experience there. As an Ethiopian myself, it was disheartening to encounter such unprofessional and concerning behavior from the local guides. I strongly believe that both the local and federal government should collaborate to establish a transparent and standardized pricing system, clearly displayed in front of each hotel in the vicinity of this area. It is disheartening to witness individuals who should be ambassadors of their heritage instead exhibiting cunning, calculated, and overall disappointing conduct.
Siye K — Google review
A wonderful experience!! It was my second time in Ethiopia and first time at Lalibelas rock hewn churches . A ticket cost is two thousand five hundred birr , and valid for 5 days . And I was lucky enough to attend a priest and monks service on Easter eve !!! It’s happening only once an a year so guys don’t miss this celebration of Easter or it’s can be also epic celebration during Ethiopian Christmas time . The vibe is awesome , and it unique in the same time only in Ethiopia.
Vasyalifestyle — Google review
🚨BE WARY OF THE PEOPLE THERE! There will be corrupted guides or greedy locals who ask you to pay for your camera (mobile camera not included). Ensure you pay the camera fee (300 Birr) at the entrance and have it WRITTEN 📝 on your entrance ticket, which is valid for 5 days This place is nice and wonderful. A great sight. However, 99% of the people there are not good. They appear friendly but it all comes at a cost. They'll ask for money in the end. Be on your guard when you visit. Entry ticket costs 50 USD. If you paying Birr, they'll calculate by 50 USD multiplied by the current USD to Birr exchange rate.

Yotor General Event Organizer is a vibrant hub that offers an easy-going market experience, perfect for those looking to explore a diverse range of items. Despite facing challenges in the past, including being rebuilt after a fire, it has emerged as a comfortable shopping destination where visitors can browse without fear of pickpockets. While foreigner rates may apply unless you’re fluent in the local language for bartering, the market boasts an impressive selection of farm-fresh produce and traditional fish dishes.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Yemrehana Krestos Church, a stunning example of late-Aksumite architecture, is a hidden gem in Ethiopia that deserves more visitors. Unlike the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, this remarkable structure was built rather than excavated, showcasing an impressive facade made from alternating layers of wood and stone. Dating back nearly 1,000 years and possibly predating Lalibela's churches by up to 80 years, it serves as a fascinating blueprint for architectural excellence.
This cave church built before 1000 years ago by King Yemrehane with marvilous architecture concept.you want to see place get ready for almost 2km stair to walk until the cave entrance. After you visit the church you should try the local food callef"dikus" made of hot pepper.

Yimrehana krestos church Is one of among lalibela rock hewn churches! It's built thousand years ago by the king yimrehana kirstos! It's far away 40 or 50 kilometers from lalibela town!

It's about 1.5hrs drive from lalibella via bad roads. Transport for a private minibus should be not more than 1200 birr. Landrover not more than 1500 birr. Entrance fee for the church is 300 birr per person. A guide is around 500 Birr per group. The church is different to the churches in lalibella and the oldest in the region so it is worth the trip.

Azwa St. Maryam Church | አዝዋ ቅድስት ማርያም ቤተክርስቲያን

Orthodox church
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Azwa St. Maryam Church, an orthodox church located near a boat stop, can be easily reached within a five-minute walk. Along the way, there is a local market where one can purchase various icons and replicas that depict the paintings found in the main church. These purchases not only provide support to the local community but also serve as symbols of religious significance. The entrance to the church compound consists of three doors reminiscent of those found in holy places.
Didn't expect to see such a stunning and beautiful church on one of the islands on Lake Tana. Took about an hour boat ride to reach the island and a few minutes' walk from landing point to reach the church. The rustic fascade of the church belies the fascinating interior with its colourful and attractive mural paintings. Was glad that the paintings were so well maintained
CK C — Google review
I have visited a two monasteries in the peninsula . It took me about one hour swim by boat . I really amazed by the murals paintings of the monastery . As per my guide the painting were drawn in the sixteenth century and it has actually a very good quality condition. There were two monastery but honestly to visit one is enough . Both of them are similar and don’t really has differences
Vasyalifestyle — Google review
Just a truely beautiful and spiritual site. Absolutely worth the visit
Des P — Google review
Azwa Mariam Monastery is a great and easily accessible ancient religious site at Zeghe peninsula, Lake Tana. You can take a 40 minutes boat ride to reach there. I recommend that visiting Azwa Mariam would be more interesting and more beneficial for local community, if local souvenirs sellers don't keep asking visitors to buy their items. It is also better for the sellers to have differentiated items for sale. Enjoy your visits to Azwa Mariam!
Muluken G — Google review
Nice murals paintings, like the other monasteries on the peninsula. Strange that we were asked to pay 300 birrs for “guiding” at the beginning and then did not have a guide at all to explain anything inside on this site, unlike the others... Peaceful place that would be even better without the 50 salers that harass you to buy stuff on your way to the monastery.
Yasmin L — Google review
Beautiful church and island forest full of birds
Nir O — Google review
The monastery can be easily accessible after five minutes walk from the boat stop. Shopping different icons from locals until to the main gate of the monastery is usual which has replicas and symbols of the paintings from the main church. Don't forget that you are supporting the local community while you are buying those replicas and icons . The main gate of the church compound has three doors like the doors we found in holy of holies . The church has builted from mud mixed with straw and rocks between ....it has grass touched roof as well... don't forget to notice and ring the old or ancient time rock bell before you go inside the church .....

Castles
Fasil Ghebbi, also known as the Royal Enclosure, is a historic site in Gondar, Ethiopia. It served as the residence for several emperors and empresses of Ethiopia from the 12th century to the late 20th century. The compound contains around 20 palaces, castles, churches, and monasteries built in a distinctive Baroque style influenced by Jesuit missionaries.
Gondar Castle is an absolute gem! The historical and cultural significance of this place is truly remarkable. The architecture blends European and African influences, offering a unique look at Ethiopia’s royal past. The well-preserved buildings, murals, and the beautiful grounds provide a glimpse into the lives of the kings who once ruled here. The guides were knowledgeable and really brought the history to life, making the visit even more enriching. It’s an incredible place for anyone interested in history, culture, or architecture. Highly recommend visiting!

It's a huge place with several building and great history. However, it's under renovation now so most of the buildings are covered with scaffolding and hundreds of workers are all over the place. The project needs another year to finish.

Amazing and affordable experience. Gonder is very safe and protected by the government in 2024 (we went in March) and saw other tourists as well. So just fly to here from Addis even though it’s annoying, because the bus routes are blocked. The castles were incredible and has very big historical and cultural value. We didn’t want a tour guide but they insisted that we gave an additional 400 birr and asked if he could just give us quick information and leave us so we could observe it by ourselves (because we prefer to do research beforehand on the sights and then explore by ourselves). But really it was perfect. The guide was very informative and gave us a quick 15 min lecture about the place and the names of the castles in the compound. It was just right:) The ticket also included Fassilidas bath a 15-20 min walk from the sight. Please don’t be like 99% of tourists who gets driven in a big car with air conditioning from sight to sight. WALK AND EXPLORE THE CITY AND DRINK LOCAL COFEE ON THE WAY. Gonder is definitely a place worth visiting! Don’t believe what they say in Addis about safety🙉💗😍

Fasil Castle, more accurately known as Fasil Ghebbi (Amharic for "Fasil's Enclosure" or "Compound"), is a magnificent historical fortress-city located in Gondar, Ethiopia. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site and a true marvel of Ethiopian history and architecture. 1. Historical Significance: * Royal Residence and Capital: Fasil Ghebbi served as the royal residence and political center of the Ethiopian Empire from the 17th century until the mid-19th century. Emperor Fasilides established it as the capital in 1636, ending the previous tradition of migratory royal camps. * A Symbol of Power: It represents a period of significant prosperity and stability for the Ethiopian Empire, known as the Gondarine period. Many emperors ruled from within its walls, conducting royal ceremonies, diplomatic meetings, and military planning. * "Camelot of Africa": It's often referred to as the "Camelot of Africa" due to its fairytale-like castles and historical importance. 2. Architectural Features: * Unique Blend of Influences: Fasil Ghebbi showcases a fascinating fusion of architectural styles. You can clearly see Hindu, Arab, and even Portuguese influences, later transformed by the Baroque style introduced by Jesuit missionaries. This mix reflects Ethiopia's historical connections with various cultures. * Fortified Complex: The entire complex is surrounded by a formidable 900-meter-long stone wall, pierced by 12 gates. * Diverse Buildings: Within the enclosure, there are numerous structures, including: * Emperor Fasilides' Castle: The most prominent structure, often described as a three-story, round-towered castle. * Palaces of Successive Emperors: Subsequent rulers, like Iyasu I, Dawit III, and Bakaffa, added their own palaces and buildings, each with distinct features. * Churches and Monasteries: Several highly decorated churches and monasteries are situated within the compound, reflecting the strong influence of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. * Libraries and Chancelleries: Buildings like the Royal Library and Chancellery demonstrate the intellectual and administrative importance of the site. * Fasilides' Baths: A notable two-story pavilion overlooking a large rectangular pool, famous as the site of the annual Timkat (Epiphany) celebrations where the pool is filled for baptismal ceremonies. * Other Structures: Stables, lion cages (as lions were a symbol of emperors), and public/private buildings. 3. Cultural Importance: * Living Heritage Site: Fasil Ghebbi is not just a collection of ruins; it continues to be a site of cultural vibrancy. Traditional ceremonies and festivals are still held within its historic walls, connecting visitors to Ethiopia's rich past and present. * Testament to Ethiopian Civilization: It's recognized by UNESCO as faithfully representing modern Ethiopian civilization in the highlands during the early 17th century and its lasting influence on Ethiopian architecture. * Interface of Cultures: The site demonstrates a remarkable interaction between internal and external cultures, with elements related to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Ethiopian Jews, and Muslims. In essence, Fasil Ghebbi is a breathtaking historical complex that offers a deep dive into Ethiopia's royal past, showcasing remarkable architecture and profound cultural significance. It's a must-see for anyone interested in history, culture, and unique architectural styles.

Gonder Fasil Castles are a true wonder—grand stone fortresses that echo Ethiopia’s royal legacy. Walking through them feels like time travel, with history and beauty blending into an unforgettable experience.
Henok K — Google review
The impressive fortress city was the centre of the Ethiopian government in the 19th century. There are about twenty palaces, royal buildings, well renovated churches, monasteries and unique official and private buildings. Really enjoyed a good walk round the compound appreciating the historical, imperial and religious architecture
CK C — Google review
It’s definitely worth going there it is one of the historical places to visit in Ethiopia and my advice is that you should have a tour guide and also if you want to take some beautiful pictures then either you should go early morning or late in the afternoon to have the right angle of sunlight There is the entry fee but well worth spending it and also you can use the ticket to visit Fasilides bath if you visit it on the same day. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, it served as the Palace for Ethiopian emperors. The first Castle was built by Emperor Fasilides in the late 1630s. The compound is more than 70000 sq. It includes the Castles of Emperor Fasilides, Empress Mentewab Castle, Emperor Bakaffa's Castle, Dawit III’s Hall, Emperor Iyasu Palace, the Royal Library,  banquet hall, and Royal archive and Lion Cages.
Tigew — Google review
In the sexteenth and seventeenth centuries, the fortress city of Gontar-Use Royal Enclosure served as the residence of the Ethiopsian emperor, Fasilides, who moved his capital bere in 1636 AD. By the late 1640s he had built a great castle here, the recently restored Fasilädes Palace. With its huge towers and looming battlement walls, it seems as if a piece of medieval Europe has been transported to Ethiopia Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, the palace, surrounded by an impressive 900-m (2,963-ft) wall, stands in a compound filled with juniper and wild olive trees, amid Enqulal Gemb, or Egg Castle, named after its domed roof, the royal archive. mary impressive churches and monastaries and a stable. These exemplify arcfitecture that is marked by both Hindu and Arab influences, subsequeritly transformed by the Baroque style that the Jesuit missionaries brought to Gondar, and have earned the city the nickname The Ethiopian Camelot. Beyond the city to the north-west, by the Qaha River, are the Fasilades Bathe. A nawo-storeyed, rustic battlement sits on the steps leading to a rectangular pool, while the bathing pavilion stands on pier atches and contains several rooms that may be reached via a stone linidge, part of which could be raised for defence in times of battle.

Debre Birhan Selassie Church is a stunning Ethiopian Christian place of worship renowned for its vibrant religious art. Built in the 17th century, it features colorful frescoes depicting various biblical tales and is considered one of the most important churches for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The church's exterior boasts stone walls, arched doors, and a two-tiered thatch roof, while the interior sanctuary shines with glorious frescos.
A must visit in Gonder. The paintings inside the church are amazing and better have a guide explaining them. The building is charming. Entrance fees is around $3 for foreigners.

Looks boring on the outside but extraordinary on the inside. Ask a priest to open the gate for you and you can sit from different angles and enjoy the beautiful graphics on the walls and ceiling of the church. Gonder is definitely safe to visit in 2024 (we visited in march) if you just fly to here and back because roads for busses are blocked due to the armed conflict.
Zeliha G — Google review
Extraordinary church dating back to 17th century but was re-developed in 19th century when original was destroyed. The exterior is beautiful and rustic and the interior is filled with stunning colourful murals. Marvelous church with lots of local history, culture and flavour. Definitely worth a visit to see something that is unique
CK C — Google review
This is a stunning traditional church in Gondar. Externally the church has beautiful stone walls and wooden arched doors. But it is the internal areas that are particularly interesting, with extensive sacred Ethiopian art. This is where you will find the original paintings of angels on the ceiling. You are also likely to see an Ethiopian Orthodox Church priest clothed in white with a hand cross.
Mal333 — Google review
An ancient and beautiful church with full of wall and roof painting known for its second Gondarian style. The biblical scenes are vividly remarkable and the interior paintings cover the walls and ceilings in richly applied red, blue and golden hues. Subjects include the Holy Trinity – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, seated above Christ on the Cross. There are a lot of stories attached with these paintings. It is an Stone building
Master M — Google review
Lovely church. Be respectful of their customs: shoes off, separate entrances for men and women, no chewing, no flash photography. We went during a service but were allowed to look around the church. Detailed paintings cover all of the walls and ceilings.
V C — Google review
Was interesting, unforgettable movement, amazing place and fell to good, peace. Debire Birhan Selassie Church, meaning 'Trinity and Mountain of Light' is the most famous place of worship in Gondar. On approach, twelve rounded stone towers - representing the 12 apostles - stand stoically guarding the church, as they have done for centuries. The 13th tower, the tallest of the bunch, represents the Lion of Judah. Eagle-eyed visitors can see an imprint of the Lion on the top half of the tower. Originally built in the 17th century by Emperor Eyasu II, the present structure was redeveloped during the 1880s following a raid by marauding Sudanese Dervishes and lightning strike that reduced the original building to rubble.

Fasilides' Bath, also known as Fasilidas Bath, is a significant cultural and historical site in Gondar, Ethiopia. It is a popular stop for tourists due to its beautiful surroundings featuring trees with unique roots and stone walls. The bath plays a central role in the Timkat celebrations, which take place on January 19th each year and symbolize Christ's baptism in the River Jordan.
Great experience with no tourists at all! So you have it all to yourself. You get a ticket both to this place and Fassil Ghebil. Gonder is a must see in Ethiopia with amazing people with great hospitality! It is also safe to be in if you just fly to Gonder from other cities
Zeliha G — Google review
A must visit place in Gonder. Well preserved. Better be visited during the baptism festival in January.
Nadine A — Google review
Fasilides' Bath's is an important cultural and historic monument during the Ethiopian festival of Timket when pilgrims from across the country arrive to take part and witness the festivities. Timkat is celebrated on the 19th January every year when the bath is filled to replicate Christ’s baptism in the River Jordan. Should be an interesting experience to participate this festival
CK C — Google review
The Fasiladas Bath, where Timkat celebrations occur in Gondar, represents the Jordan River. At the Ketera marking the eve of the Timkat celebration, fifteen or more of the 44 Tabots of the Orthodox Tewahedo Church within the city flock towards the Bath from all directions. At the center of each parish church is the Tabot, the wooden slab believed to be a replica of the Ark of the Covenant. The celebration is on 19th of January. It is one of the beautiful and colourful holidays in Ethiopia. Don't Miss it.

Nice trees and historic feel especially with not many people there. Pity about recent timkat festival deaths when this temporary seating collapsed a few weeks after we visited. So sad

Fasiledes' Bathis located about 2.5 kilometers from Fasil Ghebbi in Gondar, Ethiopia. It was built during the time of emperor Fasiledes in the 17th century. The palace is thought to have been the summer retreat for the royal family. In modern day it's home to the Timket Festival, epiphany, which celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan.

Interesting tree formations in the wall, but no signs or explanations and not much more to see apart from the pool, which is empty. Also a bit tricky to find if you’re using google maps.

Beautiful place, definitely a highlight of our Ethiopia trip - make sure to hike to Geech camp and spend the night so you can see the monkeys congregate at sunset at the cliff, once in a lifetime experience!

It’s a beautiful national park. But DO NOT go there during the rainy season as the chances that you will see anything except for fog are slim. Our tour operator obviously knew that but didn’t tell us that we most probably won’t see anything of the landscape. Be advised, everything is very basic there (unlike other African national parks). Our community camp was a hut with some beds and one table (no toilet, no light, no nothing). It was raining almost all the time. During the summer camping is supposed to be very nice (much cleaner than the community camp). The monkeys are a real highlight! We paid 210€ for three days, which is heavily overpriced considering the basic transportation, accommodations etc. All the tour operators will try to rip you off as much of possible.
Melissa S — Google review
Very beautiful and untouched nature. You can easily see monkey families and possibly bezoar goat (we were lucky to see them in the canyon and even have one visiting our camp!). Be prepared to camp with virtually no facilities .
Marianna — Google review
Incredible landscape and wildlife! The gelada baboons are so peaceful and wonderful. Lots of great hikes across mountains. Only minus is that it's almost impossible to go for hike without seeing rubbish due to lack of education of guides and scouts. The two camps I stayed at is also flooded with rubbish unfortunately. I really hope it's a problem they will do something about. There's plenty of signs saying don't litter in the park to protect the wildlife but during my three days trek in Simien out scout littered twice. Sad!
Johan M — Google review
One of the jewels of Africa. No one realises it but these mountains are more spectacular then any canyon anywhere else in the world. Hiking possible to Ras Dashen - multi day beautiful hikes.
Thomas C — Google review
Absolutely unbelievable place - trying physically due to bad sleep because actual trekking is somewhat easy if you are reasonably fit. 230 dollars for 4 days / 3 nights although I’m sure you can get a better price if you negotiate directly at the park office in Debark vs booking to a dodgy hustler somewhere in another town. Board with real daily prices in pics. Views and wildlife are great - can’t miss experience in Ethiopia.

Red Sea Secrets Diving center

Diving center

Scuba & Snorkeling
My wife and I took this course at the end of August which is one of the hottest months in Sudan to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Even though we went out of season to get certified, Mustafa was very accommodating to our needs. We paid $600 for the three day course. My wife was in contact with Mustafa from the time she inquired about Red Sea Secrets Diving prices till the day we actually met at the Red Sea Secrets Diving Center in Khartoum to sign paper and waivers, then in Port Sudan. Mustafa was very helpful and informative about everything we needed for the course. Mustafa took care of everything including our stay in Port Sudan which was an added touch of his hospitality. With that being said Mustafa's attitude towards getting us certified was very professional which was very much appreciated, that just meant that he wanted to make sure we succeed in our open water certification. He was very thorough with our practice sessions and made sure we were comfortable with the equipment and all the safety procedures before moving on to the next step. All his hard work and our training paid off when we went for our last dive to the Italian shipwreck roughly an hour or so out of the shore. The scenery was absolutely breath taking. Due to our thorough practice on equalizing and buoyancy we spent more time looking around at the under water natural environment than worrying about how to keep ourself afloat. The moment just cannot be explained in words, definitely I will remember it for the rest of my life and all of this was possible because of Mustafa and the Red Sea Secrets Diving Center. So my sincere thanks to Mustafa. Hopefully you can be my buddy instead of an instructor next time I am in sudan.

A diving Center, which makes you feel like you go diving with Friends, at some of the Most spectacular divesites in the world, from an adventourous Port City while still being incredibly professional - what could a divers heart request more!? Despite showing Up Just in the morning and asking for some good dives, owner and dive instructor Mustafa went out of bis way to accomodate my wishes and circumvent all bureaucratic hurdles. He ist excellently connected in the City and can support you with all desires and Open questions. Their equipment is top notch and very well serviced. And he just bought a brand new strong diving boat, which brings you to the divesites in no time. The divesites themselves are more than spectacular - actually im out of words to even describe the seen, with the Umbria being my absolute favourite - and while this dive spot would be certainly overcrowded anywhere else in the world, you share it only with some barracudas and parrotfish - an incredible feeling, while diving among old bombs, bottles and all kinds of other cargo. Mustafa was an excellent and respectful dive guide, who knows the divesites very well and contributes to exciting conversations during the breaks - and in terms of food and drinks you are very well supplied. I certainly havent expected auch a perfect small divimg Operation before i came to Sudan and can strongly recommend to use the opportunity of Port Sudan and the Red Sea Secrets Diving Center as a Base to get the best of both worlds - under and above water - out of your Trip. It certainly has the - justified - potential to be the next top-hyped diving location in the world.

Qulaan Mangrove Beach

National reserve
Outdoor Activities
Beaches
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Qulaan Mangrove Beach is more than just a beautiful spot—it’s a place full of vibrant energy, local charm, and ecological importance. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with kind, friendly locals often offering gabna—a traditional roasted green coffee blended with cardamom, cloves, and ginger—and Bedouin tea in a variety of unique flavors. The beach itself is stunning. A shallow, lagoon-like area stretches out before the sea, allowing you to walk far into the water while still standing above it. It’s perfect for peaceful swimming and connecting with nature. One of the main highlights is the mangrove forest—an essential part of the ecosystem here. These trees act as natural water filters, protect the coastline, and provide a habitat for various bird and marine species. Among them stands a “superstar” mangrove tree near the open sea, beautifully framed by crystal blue water. Qulaan is part of the Wadi El-Gemal National Park, an area rich in biodiversity and history. It’s a protected zone that reflects the deep connection between nature and traditional Bedouin life. Beyond the scenery, you’ll find handmade local souvenirs, great spots for photography, and an authentic cultural experience that’s hard to find elsewhere. If you’re looking for good vibes, nature, and a glimpse into Egypt’s coastal heritage, Qulaan Mangrove Beach is a must-visit.

Mangrove Beach in Marsa Alam is simply breathtaking — it honestly feels like a piece of paradise. The mix of turquoise water, white sand, and the unique mangrove trees creates a view that you’ll never forget. The place is calm, peaceful, and perfect for relaxing or taking amazing photos. It’s one of those spots that make you appreciate the natural beauty of Egypt’s Red Sea coast — truly a hidden paradise worth visiting.

The place is picturesque, you'll have to walk so much in the sun to reach the mangroove tree. So make sure to have your sunglasses and sunscree. Also the sand is really muddy so it's not a good place to swim. There's a cute souvenir shop at the entrance.

Why 4 stars instead of 5? I think this place deserves more than 5 stars, but unfortunately it is very dirty and full of rubbish. Where? If you just walk around the area and not stay only between the big mangrove and the tent, you'll see it. It's a real pity, because I love this place, but I will not go there anymore if the local people don't start to take care of the paradise they live in. They don't understand it is not healthy for anyone, even for themselves to live between plastic, tar, cans and so on. I hope they will open the eyes and start to do something, so that we all can enjoy this place again.

This is a Mangrove reserve with shallow sandy beach. Best for a quick photo shoot with the mangrove and one amazing Arabic coffee prepared by Abu Karim. There is a big tent on the beach and there are bathrooms as well. There is an entry fee for Egyptians EGP 20 and US$ 25 per person for foreigners but this covers all sites in Wadi Al Gemaal

If you aren't into nature please don't come here 😁 The place is amazing . It's very nice place for relaxing and enjoying the nature of the sea ,the Mangrove and the wonderful view of the mountains at the end of your sight in every direction. You won't find alot here, no services and the place is very far in the south but again if you like nature and relaxing you can't miss visiting this beach.

Shaab Samadai, also known as Dolphin House, in Egypt is renowned for its exceptional scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities. This tourist attraction offers a remarkable experience of swimming alongside playful dolphins that accompany divers closely. The night dive at Shaab Samadai adds to the excitement and enjoyment. It is highly recommended to bring speakers along during this amazing adventure. Moreover, visiting Shaab Samadai during Christmas allows tourists to witness an abundance of dolphins.
AMAZING!! Such amazing creatures and well protected!! Coast Guard was there to make sure nobody goes beyond the red buoys The reef beneath is really beautiful and full of life ♥️
Marielle W — Google review
I rated this experience 3 stars because I was fortunate enough to see dolphins, which is often a matter of luck. However, I found that the snorkeling guide did not take us to a good spot; there were fewer fish than I expected. Additionally, I noticed that the yacht we used seemed to be burning polluted fuel in the Red Sea, which is concerning for the environment. They need to be more mindful of the area. As they mentioned, there is a dolphin house, so they should anchor the yacht in specific locations to allow snorkelers to swim in those areas.

Amazing place for having a chance to see dolphins in their natural habitat. We went with Vivasub diving center and we were so well taken care of. Only 5 people for 1 guide who was very considerate both of our safety and of the nature. He explained the rules and what lines not to cross. When other group from other diving center broke the rules, he did’t hesitate to made the rules clear to them as well. Amazing experience. Worth every money.

With my family (2 adults and 2 boys), we had a wonderful time snorkeling at the Dolphin House with CORAYA DIVERS. Ahmed, our instructor and snorkeling guide, led us safely and smoothly through the experience. It was incredible to be immersed in the wild dolphin family (5 adults and 4 adorable calves). Watching them swim freely in the Red Sea, without disturbing them, was truly magical. Thanks to Ahmed’s guidance, it became a meaningful and unforgettable memory for all of us.

Great family day trip aboard Night Dream with Coraya Divers and our guide Ahmed. Two snorkeling 🤿 mini-tours in the House of Dolphins 🐬 both filled with nearly continuous swimming with the friendly and joyful mammals: 5 adults and 4 babies. Coraya Divers took us to the reef early, before the arrival of other boats, so we had the pleasure of starting in calm environment, thank you guys. Ahmed is like a dolphin himself, reading the swimming pattern of the mammals with precision and bringing his small team close to the dolphins for unusual eye-to-eye interaction.

Shaab Samadai (Dolphin House) is an absolutely magical spot! Swimming alongside wild dolphins in their natural habitat is an experience you never forget. The moment you enter the water, everything feels calm, clear, and full of life — then suddenly the dolphins appear, moving gracefully and peacefully around you. The atmosphere is unbelievable… open blue water, perfect visibility, and the excitement of seeing these beautiful creatures up close. It’s a mix of adrenaline and serenity at the same time. The whole reef area is well-organized and protected, which makes the experience feel safe, natural, and respectful to the dolphins. A once-in-a-lifetime adventure for anyone who loves the sea and wants a real, authentic encounter with wildlife. Highly, highly recommended!

Went there for a daytrip. Sadly there were no dolphins that day. But the 2 dives were absolutely amazing, great corals, wonderful underwater cave network at approximately 5m depth, lots of fish and wonderful underwater scenery. To be recommended for diving.
Stephan R — Google review
It was one of the best dives I did in Egypt. The place is awesome, and a playful dolphin accompanied us during the whole dive, very close to the divers. The night dive is also really fun, absolutely recommended.

Elphinstone Reef

Mentioned on
1 list
Nature & Parks
Reefs
Elphinstone Reef, located in the Red Sea, is a popular destination for advanced scuba divers. It requires considerable experience and is situated deep in the ocean about 25-35 minutes by zodiac (Dingy). The reef wall drops to around 60m below water but can be viewed from as shallow as 30-40m deep.
Let's start with the important bit...Safety....Let me emphasise this is a not a dive for inexperienced divers. The reef is 6 miles out to sea, it descends to over 100m and is swept by strong currents. Egyptian law states that you must be at least PADI Advanced OWD qualified and have at least 50 dives, you descend to about 40 + metres so there is a good reason for that. You really need to have to have good experience of drift diving, deep diving and also rougher sea conditions before going here to ensure you are relaxed and get the most enjoyment from diving this reef. It gets very tiring, immersion 'on the fly' with the current but with great satisfaction. It is easy to drop to very deep depths without realizing as it has a bottom at 170mtrs+, as it is an open site the current can be fairly strong with no protection at all on the North Plateau. Excellent visibility often 50 meters or more but safety is key on this reef Besides Dolphin House reef this is the other must dive site if you are visiting Marsa Alam or the Port Ghalib area especially between June to November. Elphinstone Reef is the mythic dive site of the south. The walls plunge deep into the blue, richly decorated with soft, bright pink, red, white and brown corals, sponges, gorgonias and fans. Pelargics often swim by the spot to feed on the abundant reef fish population, but many other species, including dophins, fusiliers, jacks, snappers groupers and wrasse may also be seen. It is a very popular dive site, so there is likely to be many other dive boats there when you are and it can get very crowded in high season, unless you overnight on a liveaboard. Due to its isolated position Elphinstone is well known for encounters with oceanic whitetip and hammerhead sharks along with barracuda, numerous big jacks and even tuna. The reef and the fish and sea life are all in excellent condition. There are not that many sponges present so the reef is not as colourful as reefs in other parts of the world. Both the hard and soft corals are in excellent health. Elphinstone is an oval, flat top sea mount, with about 0' - 3' water and waves across the top. The north plateau is around 80m long and between 10-25m wide. There are two pinnacles on the north end the first at 42 m along with a convenient platform at 40 metres where the sharks appear but only at dawn. There are many cleaning stations on the way to keep you amused and huge amounts of fish stocks - moray eels, butterflyfish, angelfish, large schools of black snappers, goatfish and more. You can then then do a superb drift right to the southern end. The southern ridge descends steeply and is pierced by a cave at 55-58 metres. The west side is less steep and slightly sandier than the East. There are lots of overhangs and small caves. In the sheltered area near the reef are many superb photo opportunities. The west wall is adorned with abundant soft and hard corals. This is an amazing place to dive but really and is only for the most experienced and well trained divers, out of reach of the average PADI Advanced Diver and its vital you research and choose your dive centre and guides carefully Emperor divers for example will not take divers out unless they have been on a number of dives with them before an Elphinstone trip as they like to review your capabilities first.

One of the most famous reefs in the Red Sea. A nice spot filled with life. If you are lucky this is also a really good spot to see sharks.

Very nice diving on the reef, my suggestion is to start with reef to end up in the blue searching for sharks

Dove here first 29 years ago. The only dive boat here then. 8 divers. Marsa Alam was a just one goat shed, 4 hour mini van ride from Urghada. Great memories. Sharks galore. Dolphins. Huge schools of jack fish. Morays and barracuda’s. North tip arch. Sigh, times have changed.

One of the best dive sites in the red sea, very famous by Oceanic whitetip shark, amazing coral reef, turtles, hammerhead and dolphins sometimes.

I had a very interesting encouter with a shark on this reef. It lett stronger impression than beautifull corals and colorfull fishes around the reef...
Dragan T — Google review
It's an advance dive and requires alot of experience as a start It's in the middle of the red sea around 25-35 mins by zodiac (Dingy) into the deep blue. It's a hug reef wall in the deep around 60m below water , yet you can have a full view from 30m to 40m deep. Usually there is a lot of marine life there specially in the morning times or month of October where the heat is less. Wondera you can see at this spot are hammer heads, manta rays, reef sharks grey tips, white tips. Also, some times rarely macho shark ( Tiger sharks)

Absolutely fabulous dive center. All of the staff from the dive guides to the boat captains are really remarkable. They make every effort to make it feel like a family and welcome you with open arms. The equipment rentals are in great condition and the dive sites offered are spectacular. Ramy Eisharaway performed our refresher course and nitrox training and was wonderful with my two daughters. The staff members are all professionals and Aiman and Hamassa gave great attention to all the logistics and equipment. I highly recommend this place!

The staff were professional, kind, and made us feel welcome from the start. They have a water motor like machine if you are certified-to make your rice more fun, and fast) The reception team members were knowledgeable and they make safety a priority. Equipment was in excellent condition. Whether you're new to diving or experienced, this is a center you can trust. I highly recommend them and would gladly return for more dives!

I had the pleasure of diving with this incredible diving center and couldn’t be happier with the experience. From the moment I checked in to the moment I left, the team was nothing short of exceptional. Extremely professional, friendly, and always ready to assist – they truly make you feel welcome and at ease whether you’re a beginner or an experienced diver. I completed 6 dives with them, and every single one was a blast. The dive sites were stunning, with Marsa Shouna and Abu Saile being particular highlights – vibrant marine life, clear waters, and breathtaking underwater landscapes. The instructors and guides were knowledgeable, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do. Their focus on safety and fun made every dive smooth and enjoyable. The equipment was well-maintained, the briefings were clear and informative, and the organization was top-notch. If you’re planning to dive in the area, I wholeheartedly recommend this center. Whether you’re doing a few fun dives or a full diving course, you’re in excellent hands. I’ll definitely be coming back!

This is my first time in this area. I visited the diving center for the first time. The approach from the first day was professional, although at the beginning it was a bit chaotic when choosing diving equipment. But everything was fixed by Mohamad Ahmed, who spoke fluent English and for my wife also Czech. He won us over right away. He was fully helpful and took very good care of us during the dives. I can only recommend him

Great bay, with sandy beach and with a coral reef on left side and lots of turtles. In the middle on seagrass you can spot Dugong. He is usually feeding there between 7-8am, or 3-4pm and is around 12m-4m deep. Sometimes he shows up close to the beach, but I had to swim quite far to find him. He needs to breath every few minutes, so if you will look from the beach and water will be calm you might know the direction to swim. Good luck. It was amazing experience.
Tereza P — Google review
It's a shame. 20 persons around the dugong, he had not the space to emerge and breath. Everyone with the GO-PRO stick to the dugong face to have a pic to post to the social Networks. Why not just Googling "dugong" to have a picture of this animal? People, please try to learn a bit how to respect the nature! ....in few years these animals will be gone, at least they will leave the bay. Ah...special thanks to the 7-8 boats that lead hundred of people all together to disturb the animals, making noise and poisoning the water with their motors. I really hope that the authority will limit the access to the bay.
Giuliano C — Google review
Someone should stop this madness and stop bringing hundreds of crazy tourists with noisy and stinky ships into this bay who don't know how to behave, making noise and kick and try to touch the animals and block their way to breathing. Please leave this bay only for the few hotel guests, just because of the animals. After all, they suffer and soon there will be not even the last one dugong or any turtles.

(Translated by Google) We were at Subex in June and had a lot of great dives! The team is absolutely great and accommodating. The house reef is a dream for everyone who loves steep reefs as much as we do. But the trips with the minibus also show you a really great and varied underwater world. From the check-dive to the last dive, everything was great! We were also helped straight away with minor stomach problems.

(Translated by Google) Great people, good dive sites, but it can happen that you dive twice in the same place in a week. The whole thing depends very much on the weather. If the waves on the house reef are too strong, half-day trips to alternative diving sites (bus ride <40 minutes) are offered, but are also charged separately (around a €15 surcharge). If you really want to dive a lot, this is the wrong place. As a rule, 2 dives are done per day (plus possibly 1 night dive). Diving takes place in groups of a maximum of 4 (plus 1 guide), rarely with a larger group. The rental equipment is fine, minor defects such as: B. a torn strap on the dive computer can be replaced quickly and easily. In terms of price, SUBEX is at the higher end, with equipment rental, guides and trips adding up to a lot quickly.

One of the most amazing dive resorts in Egypt. Super chill vibes and staff that quite literally could not have done enough for us. My airline lost my bag on my way into Egypt but the amazing team at Pharaoh dive club sorted me out with everything I needed including running into town to get me some clothes to wear. Mo and Mustafa were absolutly amazing guides that new all the best local dive locations. The food on the camp was amazing every night, especially the beef curry and bbq on the beach. The hospitality staff were amazing. Always smiling and friendly, an absolute pleasure to be around. Farid made the week. Always chatty and genuinely invested in making sure the week was as good as it could be. I will 100% recommend visiting this amazing site. The house reef is stunning with tons of life. And the staffs attention to looking after you is top tier. The accommodation is beautiful with stunning views both across the reef and the desert behind. Room was always super clean with fresh towels every day. Have had the best week of diving and will deffinatly be back again very soon. Might have found my new favourite dive resort. Beats a livaboard by a long shot. 10/10

I am a german advanced diver started with 25 logged dives. I was at the camp with my girlfriend. We were very pleased. I did mainly fundives and she did her raid advanced course. The instructures were well educated in defining specied and showed us their beloved house reef. We were very pleased as biology PhD students to be introduced in red sea marine life. Instructers respect the marine life and are very gentle and patient to animals and us as divers. My girlfriend was better educated for her advanced certificate than I was for her advanced course and afterwards the table has turned so she tought to improve my diving skills on out boat diving safari afterwards with Big Blue. We would recommed to choose Pharao and Big Blue for your course and diving safari. Thanks to the team for showing us turtles, wrecks and the lovely octopus for a decent price :)

The safety aspect throughout our 7 dives, up to date and clean equipment were all at a very high standard. Freedom Divers have their own fabulous boat which had all the facilties and was very efficiently run by the whole team. Help was always on hand if and when you needed it. Great customer service with excellent knowledge of the dive sites. We dove in August during the off-season but only had 3-5 other divers on the boat for our dives, which was LOVELY! The other companies seemed to be much more crowded but this is perfect because who wants to fight crowds when diving. Everything was excellent on the boat. The lunch was delicious and the dives were great! Good quality gear as well!

It seems they put a lot of importance in the safety, and equipment chrck. The regulator and the wetsuits were brand new. And on top of that, the instrictors were very friendly, but not too much: they left me decide what to do during the dive, I felt like I was diving with my buddy, without being pushed to do what instructor says. But at the same time, the instructor I was with did double checks on the equipment and showed me some amazing fish species that I wouldn't have moticed myself. Very easy-going. On the first day I had a problem with my own BCD, they helped me to fix this. The boat is super comfy, food was just great, a lot of choice of food. On top of this, they are flexible with the price and made me a good discount because I dived 3 days. Everything we agreed on was done, and even more (thank you for amazing underwater videos, Mo'emen!). Overall, it was one of my best diving experiences.

Really positive experience with these guys for my first dive. We were on a boat with divers of mixed experience and they were really relaxed but attentive. A local diver recommended them over others in the area and true to his word they were really good value and a really nice bunch. 5stars all the way

We spent the last week in Safaga to get our OWD Brevet and a few more days of diving. What an experience. From the very first contact Diko and his team are very helpful regarding everything about the trip: They helped us find the perfect little hotel directly next to the dive base and close to the boat. They organised airport transfer, optional Activities ( like a very fun Quad tour in the desert with a visit to some beduins). Prices are transparent and very fair. While you may find cheaper Dive bases you will get the most bang for your buck with freedom divers: - Rental Equipment in excellent condition - Comfy and safe boat - Excellent food on the board ( optional but seriously better than most i have eaten on dry land in Safaga) - Very helpful and friendly staff ( egyptian and german) - A lot of returning clients that are very open and friendly to new faces - Diko is a very competent, unique and fun instructor. If you dont take yourself too serious you will have a lot of fun on the boat and in the water. - Very close bonding with crew and clients: We spent a lot of time each evening with people from the boat and the dive base hanging around at the "divers house bar" or at the Nemo Hotel pool. Almost every client was a returning client. That alone speaks for the service and atmosphere at freedom divers. My friend and I will most definitely return too. TLDR: An excellent dive base that will suck you in and never let you go again. Shoutout to Diko and everyone at the base and on the boat that made the last week a very fond and lasting memory.

not a bad experience but the HR wasn't the most FCable. on the other hand, the HD made my acc go down by quite a bit. i was expecting something easier to do as cookiezi seems to not have had much of a problem with it but unfortunately i overstreamed 222bpm. i hope that the next time i can go, i can FC freedom dive with HDHR and SS it, sniping cookiezi's score and giving me the #1.

If you're looking for an exceptional diving experience, look no further than ORCA Dive Club Soma Bay. This dive center is renowned for its organization and friendly atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for both beginners and seasoned divers alike. With a well-equipped tech area managed by Mimo, divers can hone their skills in a supportive environment.
Very good experience with Orca Dive. Club in Soma Bay. Nice, experienced and helpfull staff and guides who are all speaking German and English. All equipment is of good quality in good condition and maintained well. Clear communication. The boat crews they work with are also wonderful, especially the crew of Alia 1, great food too. The house reef is very nice. Five stars

My experience with Orca Diving was very disappointing. The staff, especially the German-speaking employees, were arrogant, unhelpful, and seemed uninterested in making guests feel welcome or comfortable. Their attitude was dismissive and distant, which made me feel uncomfortable from the start. I did not get the support, friendliness or passion I would expect from a professional dive center. Instead, I felt like just another number — not a valued guest. Overall, both Orca Diving failed to deliver the relaxing and enjoyable experience I was hoping for. I would not recommend to anyone looking for a real vacation.

The Orca Dive Club is a great place to enjoy easy beginner diving. The Orca Dive Club is extremely well organised, but it can be a little overwhelming at first, especially when you don't know what to do or where to go. Otherwise, great instructors, well-prepared equipment, and great equipment storage organisation when you dive a few days in a row. I highly recommend this place, and the reef is beautiful!

The quick and informative response via emails was very nice and helpful. But when arriving there, it was another story. The dive shop can feel overwhelmingly crowded and chaotic. The atmosphere is frequently stressed and hectic as various groups preparing for their dives at different dive sites/trips at the same time. It lacks a personal touch, making the experience feel somewhat impersonal. Before arriving, I booked 2 full-day dive trip with them but after seeing what happened at the dive shop and the experiences we had with the dive guide at check dive, I canceled the trip and only decided to do 1x half-day just to have an idea how marine lives would be at the red sea. The dive guided ordered me like in an army to carry extra weight (2 kg) even though I insisted what I had was already enough after calculating all relevant elements e.g. body weight, wetsuit, water temp etc. So I ended up carrying too much weight underwater. It was not a big deal but very annoying for such a shallow check dive. The guide we had on our half-day dive was better in term of communication. Despite the number of staff members they have there, the service provided was poor. Rental equipment is only in an O.K. standard despite the price they charge. Plus, you have to do everything yourself from picking up equipment to assemble (which is okay but unusual compared to diving elsewhere e.g. Asia or even some parts in Europe), to cleaning, to return. It feels like in a boarding school and maybe they would treat you better if you do the course but not just fun dives. With my experiences of diving at many different places in the world, I find it very challenging to fully relax and enjoy the diving experience with Orca Soma Bay. I would have given only 1 star but the extra star was for Doris and the good visibility and the fish underwater.

I want to thank Tatjana and Ahmed from reception, Mostafa from the support staff, all dive guides and Lady Christina boat crew for an amazing 3 days of diving. It was my first time to dive in Soma Bay and I will come again for sure because of them. Friendly, helpful and professional 🙏🏽

What a great week CCR diving here. Orca Soma Bay are a very well organised, helpful and friendly dive center. Mimo runs a lovely tech area here and he is very supportive and helpful for all technical diving. This is a great place to come to practice and maintain skills off their jetty onto the nice house reef. You can also go out on the day boats and dive more remote sites and do extended dive times, we did 3h and 4 would have been possible. A friend of ours came out and did his open water course here. He got good tuition and enjoyed his time here. I will return.

What a wonderful place to learn SCUBA diving. The team was always super friendly, the equipment well maintained and in top shape. Every appointment made started on time. The house reefs are breath taking (please don't take that literally) 😂. We will come back for sure, no better place to learn SCUBA diving.

Great kite station with very friendly staff! Ashraf the manager was very helpful and welcoming, explained everything with a smile :) Gear was new and in top condition and the guys at the beach pumped and set up the kite! Had a good session and would definitely recommend it if you are in Soma bay.

I had my second kitesurfing session yesterday. In the last ten minutes, the coach introduced waterstart practice. Unfortunately, this was done in very shallow water — barely above my ankles. As a result, I fell hard onto the sand four times. Now I’m experiencing pain in my tailbone and ankle. At the time, I thought it was just part of learning, but after reading more, I realized that waterstarts are supposed to be taught in waist- to chest-deep water for safety reasons. That left me feeling both frustrated and disappointed. The session cost €170 — and I’m left asking myself: Am I paying that much to walk away with an injury? Last night, after my body cooled down, I was limping from the pain.

I was here for the second time and both holidays were great. Nice welkom by the lady at the front desk. Friendly people behind the bar and the food is very nice. Great storage facillities for my foilboard and kites. At night extra security on the beach so that is very safe. Every hoor there is a shuttlebus from and to the hotels. See you next year 😎😎

Definitely one of the best kite spots I’ve ever been in a distance of just 4,5 hours of flight from Europe. Great people. All of them speak really good English and German. Great wind conditions, almost no waves and this awesome color of the Red Sea with the mountains in the background. Perfect for absolute beginners and for pro’s. And if there is now wind you still have plenty of possibilities to enjoy your holidays there. I’ve been already 6 times in Soma Bay and Kitehouse is now my second home ;) Looking forward for my next return in October.

Amazing kite spot in november or spring time. In this time it isn't so hot to compare to summer. Enough wind for beginner and advanced kiter. Thx to Shaban the best instructor! Pricing is not cheap but the service/organization is top.

I was an outsider... But the view and the sports happening was great.. Today i spent 30 mins the full moon night. If u r a fan of dancing, drinking, ... This night is different. As it's not my favorite stuff, I just took some photos with the full moon view. It is soo good and amazing.

Sharm El-Naga

Sharm El-Naga is a casual all-inclusive resort that offers unfussy rooms and a diving center with direct beach access. It's a peaceful place, far from mass tourism, surrounded by nature and featuring a beautiful natural beach with a protected coral reef area for snorkeling. The restaurant serves authentic and simple family cooking while promoting sustainability. The resort provides good value for money, although some rooms may need refurbishing.
It's changed due to the 5 star report taking over the original beach and dive center. I was sad and skeptical but upon arrival today pleasantly surprised. Their new beach is right below our rooms, playground, beach bar and showers all so much closer and cozy. The pier entrance to the sea is constructed professional and comfortable with wide safe steps to access the left side of the original inside bay. It's safe and the pier has benches and boxes for snorkeling equipment or other belongings and parents to sit supervise their children. Everything else remained the same, the wonderful staff, amazing Manager Mina, receptionist and the great chefs and waiters like Hussein. So happy to be back with 20 family members who came from abroad. Food is delicious and it feels like home.

Don't put high expectations and keep in mind that it isn't expensive or 5 star hotel, the food is not fancy but the breakfast is awesome. Rooms are clean and very nice. The hotel is far away from any facilities , so going out is difficult and getting uber is impossible

It's a comfortable place to stay in. The rooms are simple, but well-equipped and most of them offer a beautiful sea view. The staff were always kind and helpful. The food is fresh and delicious. There are three small beaches with beautiful umbrellas made of straw which provide good shelter from the sun. They were never crowded and there's a bar on one of them. The sea is amazing. It was always calm and good for a swim. There is a jetty to get into the water because there are protected coral reefs all over, so it might not be the best option for kids and non-swimmers. On the other hand, it's a paradise for diving and snorkeling as you can see many exotic fish all around! I was there twice for a few days already and am sure to return whenever I visit Egypt.

Warm and polite staff. Great place for relaxing, away from other hotels/facilities. Simple and clean place with amazing coral reefs.

The 35 Euros for a few hours is a ripoff as the lunch and the two drinks are not worth more than 5 €. The snorkelling is great but if you’re a beginner they don’t tell you what to do but wear a life vest. They are pet friendly and that’s a good thing.
Fab L — Google review
With the new construction of the new hotel, this hotel is absolutely not suitable as a family and dog hotel. One star is still too many. The sea is only accessible via a wooden bridge. Playing alone on and in the sea in shallow water. Not a chance. Only the guests of the new hotel now have free access to the sea. Without a dog beach, of course. We are extremely frustrated and are considering leaving. This no longer has anything to do with the original Sharm El Naga. Addendum: After a 3-day stay, I have to revise my harsh assessment a little. The main reason for this is the atmosphere and the really good staff. These ensure that despite the new circumstances it was a very nice and relaxed holiday. But please, dear owners, show consideration for the reef. Protects the reef. For these reasons I now give it 4 stars and hope that the owners show more consideration for their sanctuary.
