The well-furnished tasting room provides 8 different tasting options, including non-alcoholic choices for families with children. We are visiting the Breede River Valley in Dec. It's extremely hot here. We made a booking here, though we had visited many times before. This is indeed our favorite wine farm in this area, and we will keep coming back! There are these amazing gardens, beautiful green lawns, a variety of trees. Christina restaurant is on the premises. The wine tasting area was full to the brim, a lekker bunch of patrons, a family offered us a space next to them on the couch. We however did eventually find a shady spot. We did the wine paring this time. You would need the menu to see the variety of options, there is also a kiddies tasting option. Our little yorkie was welcome. The also sell the non alcoholic variety of sparkling which I like to buy for my non drinking friends. It was Sunday and they close at 3pm. The staff although very busy and extremely hot remained engaging and full of smiles. Thank you!

Beautiful place. Just had a quick stop and walk about so I can't comment on the food or wine but definitely a lovely atmosphere. Will stop there again, this time spend a little longer and experience more
Kay A — Google review
What an amazing experience I’ve had here, after doing a couple of wine tastings around Cape-town ,the wine tasting experience here was really different .It was not just about the wine but knowing the story behind the wines made me feel like I’m part of the family. The whole place is a beautiful story .From the drive going there ,I learnt that all the vines fenced with red flowers belong to the winery ,you get excited on the road before you even reach the winery.
BUNNY S — Google review
This is great for families. Great setting with lush greenery and proud family heritage used in the tasting room and restaurant. Fantastic wine selection. A must visit.
Hilda S — Google review
I’m not one to write a negative review, but after being blown away by Nuy Estate yesterday, the lack lustre approach to a wine tasting experience at Van Loveren left more than the taste of tannin in the mouth. Positive: We were 3 attending on a quiet Monday and each opted for a wine/food paring option. The pairings were good, the wines were mostly enjoyable and as not much of a Chardonnay fan I can highly recommend the Christina’s Chardonnay - a pleasant woodie Chardonnay. Now - the negatives: it costs nothing to be nice and make people feel welcome. A very basic greeting was followed by no clear guidelines or suggestions. We knew we wanted to do a food and wine pairing tasting - so after picking a place to sit, we were presented with a menu. No discussion, suggestions or interaction. Shortly after our wine was brought all On one black tray, placed in front of us with no clear indication what we were having till we asked in what order. No information or anything forthcoming. After another 5 minutes our small tray of food pairing arrived - no napkins. No discussion or any interaction again. When we asked for a napkin, we were presented with plastic wrapped “scented dry wipes”. Firstly - sustainability? Secondly - the smell from a scented wipe during wine tasting? Upon paying - nada, nothing until I actually sarcastically said “thank you for asking , our time here was fine”. The sarcasm was lost. P.s. no soap in ladies… This probably would have warranted a three star review, but when on extended travel through SA, and having been so surprised by a lesser known in my experience like Nuy, you’d expect much better and higher standards of customer care from an “old and established” high end “perceived” estate like Van Loveren. I hope this will assist you in inspiring your staff to be brave, free and welcoming in the future - especially during quiet winter months Even “fake enthusiasm” is better than a luke warm breeze.

Lots of wine tasting options and a very nice venue.

Such wonderful service from the wine tasting service. Friendly, kind. African Java is a great value for money, delicious red wine The duck at Christinas bistro is so good we went back and had it again.

The Marbrin Olive Growers Farm offers a delightful and familial atmosphere, providing an enriching experience for visitors. Their children engage with guests, creating an ideal opportunity to learn about Olives, Olive oil, and various processes employed in their production. Notably, their truffle-infused olive oil complements mashed potatoes splendidly. Additionally, their Limoncello is a delightful way to kickstart your day; it was so enjoyable that I purchased three bottles.
What an incredible experience! Tasty olive oils paired with some delicious recipe suggestions and the tapenade's! Goodness so yum. Such laughs were had as well. Truly loved our time there, thank you to you both!

A heartfelt recommendation for anyone visiting the area! We had such a wonderful experience here – everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We started with an amazing Muscadel cocktail, and during the olive oil tasting, we got to try a variety of flavour infused oils in delicious combinations. It was such a lovely experience to see how something simple can become truly special.
Lea S — Google review
Excellent tasting experience with the owners. Multiple infused olive oils, a balsamic reduction, two tampanades, chili dip and even limincello were offered along a freshly baked loaf of the most delicious bread. This destination is well worth a trip up the dirt road!

Stopped for lunch. Beautiful place on the river. Enjoyed fish and chips and hamburgers. Best chips we have EVER tasted. We will be back!

So much to do, wine tasting which was very good on the deck under the trees or buy a picnic and lounge on the grass next to the river, or possibly stock up with your favorites and float down the river on the barge. Lovely way to spend a lazy day.

Sip and Savour festival at Viljoensdrift was very well-organized - from shuttle to entry to the food and wine tasting! Enjoyed a lovely river cruise. Thoroughly enjoyed our day!!
Natasha T — Google review
Great wine, lovely atmosphere. Great prices on both the wine tasting and their food. Don't know if it's always like this since we went there shortly after heavy rain- but the river was dirty and didn't smell too pleasant . But the restaurant was amazing with live music.
Mieke G — Google review
The river cruise was magical! I loved the picnic boxes you can use from the deli!

We had one of the best lunch stopovers here during our 2 weeks road trip in SA. The food was delicious. The place was well decorated and there were many interesting things to shop. It's definitely worth a meal here if you happen to pass by.

Veldskoen Farm Stall near De Doorns (at the end of the rainbow on our visit) is a popular stop offering hearty meals like lamb shank and burgers, a charming farm shop with local produce, and a relaxed, pet-friendly atmosphere. It’s praised for good service and clean facilities, making it a great spot for travelers.

The Veldskoen Padstal in De Doorns is a true hidden gem. Upon entering you're greeted by the friendliest and most helpful staff you can find. The Padstal is filled with all types of lovely fresh food smells from their kitchen , and not to mention the nice , warm and inviting fireplace , making you feel right at home. If you ever are in the area , I would definitely suggest making a turn for a quick bite or even just to stock up snacks for your road trip . As there is everything and more to be found at the Veldskoen Padstal in De Doorns.

Beautiful Padstal next to the N1, close to De Doorns. A beautiful venue to stop, stretch your legs and browse the wide variety of home made goodies, snacks and food.
Jaco — Google review
Quite a lovely stop and we usually just it by and this time decided to buy grapes from a safe place. It was really a cool place to pick up gifts and snacks . Amazing service from the lady that served us. Definitely should have eaten there as we had putrid service from Lainsburg wimpy as usual.
Venessa N — Google review
Eclectic padstal with cosy fireplaces creating a homely atmosphere on a grey and beautiful rainy day in the mountains en route to the ocean. Gorgeous affordable leather bags. Scrumptious chicken pie and toasted sandwiches to take home. Creamy cappuccino’s served in compostable cups…a real gem!
Mignon V — Google review
Grabbing some breakfast at the Veldskoen Padstal is always a great experience. Every time I'm in the area, I make sure to stop by, and it's always one of the highlights on my trip. During me recent visit it was a particularly cold winter morning, with some beautiful snow on the mountains, so we opted to sit inside. They had a couple of fireplaces going, which made for a cozy atmosphere. They do however also have a nice outside garden area, complete with a trampoline and swings for the kids. As always our breakfast was tasty, and the service was friendly and attentive. Afterwards we did some shopping in their farmstall section as well. It's always so well-stocked with a nice variety of items. This wasn't my first visit, and definitely won't be my last.
Dewald R — Google review
Amazing little place with a warm greeting when you enter. We stopped for breakfast and everything is freshly made. Home baked breads. And very generous portions. Real value for money. Will definitely become a regular stop on our travels down the N1

Lovely trail to see the disas. Just breathtaking! Meet some friendly staff on our way down doing maintenance. Takes about 1 hour to get up to the disas. Views from the top spectacular
Rita L — Google review
The most beautiful scenic mountain nature reserve with well marked level walks, kloofs, waterfalls & an abundance of testing mountain hikes.
Ann P — Google review
Early morning walks at the Greyton nature reserve are magnificent! There are several trails here. We did the Hardepeerkloof trail and it took about 2 hours with stops in between to take photos and breathe in the fresh air. The views are so beautiful. I love the picturesque rolling hills and the way the sun hits the mountains. It is so peaceful, quiet, and calming. If you're doing the Hardepeerkloof trail, make sure to go clockwise from the start as some parts are very steep, and is better to climb up than risk slipping down.
Amy H — Google review
Absolutely one of the best Hikes we have ventured on (Boesmanskloof), beautiful mountain back drops, well maintained paths and spectacular scenery - the hiking trail from Greyton side is a strenuous one, but definitely worth it, lots of up hill for the first 4.5km along the jeep track with a picnic spot (breakfast rock) at around 3.8km then single track through the valley with plenty view points along the way, up to Oakes falls, which is a spectacular waterfall into a pool where you can picnic, swim and rest, the last leg of the hike up to Die Glag accommodation is steep but the views are amazing, we went end of March
Kyle L — Google review
Stunning views, great weather and well maintained trails. Perfect hiking.
Dharshan M — Google review
Greyton Nature Reserve is simply beautiful and well worth a walk. Like any mountain environment, make sure you have water, some warm clothing, a map or app, and don’t walk alone #IamWildernessSafe

This is truly a great experience! You can enjoy nature at its best. The trail routes are clearly marked. We did not have any difficulties navigating along the well kept trails. The nature reserve staf are friendly and helpful. Take your swimming gear with when you do the waterfall route.

Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden

Mentioned on

Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
Located on the outskirts of Worcester, near Cape Town, the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden is nestled at the base of the Hex River Mountains. It boasts a diverse collection of native succulents and plants, making it an ideal spot to explore and learn about the region's ecology. The garden offers hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, as well as picnic areas for visitors to relax and enjoy nature.
What can I say, the photo's speak for themselves, it's just beautiful nature. There are a few different trails from 20 minutes to two hours. None of them are difficult. First part is a bit steep. You reach the top in about ten minutes (about 350m high) and the rest is over the tops on almost the same level.
Wilfred R — Google review
Lovely place, interesting plants in abundance and many birds. Hiking trail with gorgeous views from the top. But please be aware that at some points the longer trail really gets quite steep, at one point you need to climb a few meters with a thick nylon rope which is provided, but it's a bit slippery to grip. So good shoes are a very good idea, and be careful or ask the people on site if it had been raining shortly before what the trail is like - it might be tricky. Have fun! :)
M. K — Google review
So many types of floral areas in one place, a definite stop of for any tourist or local. I recommend going in spring when you can see all of the beautiful flowers. And bring your sunscreen and walking shoes. There is plenty of parking and the prices are very good. They have many picnic spots as well as a restaurant. It’s is also somewhat wheelchair accessible.
Warwick M — Google review
Extremely good range of plants to please the inner botanist, plus birdlife, reptiles and Dassies. The longer walks do require some fitness and robust footwear but the view from the highs give a vista over all of Worcester. Good areas for picnics and kids adventures.
Jeremy P — Google review
The Karoo Desert National Botanical Gardens is quite easy to find off the N1 and is situated in an upmarket residential area. The botanical gardens are lovely and well kept, the grounds are neat and offer some really good shady picnic spots. The staff are also friendly at the nursery. The variety of vygie colours really catch the eye and attract all types of birds and insects.
Sandra C — Google review
Wow, beautifully maintained botanical garden with short hiking routes, ideal for nature lovers with kids. Great restaurant and kids play area on site with big open lawn for them to run around
Janika H — Google review
We were in time for the different vygies which looked very beautiful with different colours against the green of the mountain. Lots of tortoise around!
SVV M — Google review
Entrance is R55 for an adult. Well maintained gardens with a lovely restaurant. There are also 3 hiking trails into the mountain. The elevation climb is about 210meters and distances vary from 3km to 6km. I will really recommend a trip to this place.

The trails are well-marked with provided maps, leading hikers through beautiful vistas, rock formations, colorful fynbos, and birdwatching opportunities. A cave with ancient rock art and a picnic spot under the trees provide additional points of interest along the way. The reserve caters to different fitness levels and offers stunning mountain views.
Phillipskop is a dream for the tired city traveller. The chalets are large, clean and fitted with all you need to self cater. The host families are delightful and the eco pool is warm and comforting. A bonus is the sparkling night sky. Definitely worth a visit.

An excellent place for a self catering weekend away in the mountains with friends or family. 2 hours from Cape Town. You can even have families in adjacent houses. The four guest houses have magnificent views, are spacious and well equipped. There are a variety of walks of differing lengths through the fynbos and up the valley to the top of the mountain or just relax at the natural pool.
David G — Google review
Such a spectacular mountain reserve. The accommodation is spacious, well equipped and have amazing views. The natural pool is beautiful. The hiking trails are well signposted and the paths are clear. I went on a trail run and the trails are great for running on too.
Rob J — Google review
Phillipskop Mountain Resort is the most beautiful place on earth within the most fynbos biodiversity area in South Africa. Who better to own a part of this area than Dr Chris Whitehouse,a botanist with his wife Anna who too is a Conservationist. They provide well appointed, very comfortable, very clean accommodation. A place to go to where you feel like not wanting to go home.
Denise S — Google review
Fantastic trails to suit all levels of fitness, stunning views, interesting rock formations and a cave with rock art, what a great hike! We were lucky enough to see a couple of Klipspringers and enjoyed watching the baboons. We visited the week before they closed to day visitors (unless you book a guided tour) but would definitely return and stay.
Harriet S — Google review
It is beautiful there. I took spectacular photos of landscapes and plants. However I wish there were more dish cloths and toilet paper. It is required that one does not leave dirty dishes, but then enough dish cloths must be provided. One dirty-coloured dish cloth is simply not enough.
Helena O — Google review
We came only for the hiking, but the trails are in great shape and the views are great. We loved being able to see the rock art, especially! We appreciate that it is possible for people to come take the trails even if they aren’t staying in the accommodations there. The fee was quite reasonable.

Great place to break away in the mountains above Stanford. Very well appointed cottages with plenty of open space inside for families. Variety of hikes for all abilities and my toddler loved swimming in the Lily Pond. Hope to be back some day soon.

Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary

Mentioned on
5 lists
Wildlife refuge
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary, located outside Stanford in the Overberg region, is a popular tourist attraction that has seen nearly 20,000 visitors. The sanctuary is known for its educational work and the well-being of its big cats. Visitors are guided through the area by knowledgeable volunteers who provide information about the sanctuary and its residents. The big cats have spacious enclosures and appear to be comfortable and well-cared for.
Visited Panthera Africa this morning with my teenage daughter and we were both blown away by this truly ethical sanctuary. Coming from experiences with wildlife facilities in Thailand where animals seemed drugged and listless, this was a complete revelation. This is what a real sanctuary looks like - no breeding, no trading, no tourist interactions with the animals. Every decision here is made with the cats' welfare as the priority. You can see and feel the difference immediately. Our guide was incredibly passionate and knowledgeable, sharing detailed information about each species and the heartbreaking but hopeful rescue stories of individual animals. The staff clearly genuinely care about these cats and it shows in everything they do. The difference in the animals was striking - these big cats were alert, active, and displaying natural behaviors. No signs of the sedation or stress we've unfortunately seen elsewhere. They live in spacious, natural enclosures where they can be themselves. My daughter learned so much about the real issues in captive big cat breeding and the importance of ethical sanctuaries. This visit opened our eyes to conservation in a meaningful way. Panthera Africa is doing vital work and deserves all the support they can get. This is how wildlife conservation should be done. If you're in the Western Cape, make the drive to Stanford - it's absolutely worth it to support an organization that truly puts the animals fiirst.
Peter J — Google review
Visiting Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary in Stanford was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Hearing the stories of lions, tigers, and leopards rescued from the lion bone trade, tiger bone medicine trade, and other cruelty brought the reality of these issues to life in a way I’ll never forget. What makes Panthera exceptional is their 100% ethical approach. The animals live in spacious, natural habitats tailored to their needs, with an enrichment enclosure to keep them stimulated — no petting, no exploitation, just genuine care. Our guide, Kate, was outstanding — knowledgeable, passionate, and happy to answer every question. The visit was educational, emotional, and truly impressive to see how the sanctuary is determined to respect the animals and give them the dignity they deserve. I highly recommend this to all ages. If you can, please visit, donate, and help them continue their incredible work.
Bianca W — Google review
What an awesome experience!! Did one of their tours a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I was a bit sceptical about the ethical aspects but it seems like a honest sanctuary and I couldn’t find any negative things about it. They’re acting in the best interest of the animals. If the animals don’t want to be seen you won’t see them. Personally I rather not see them but know that they are comfortable instead of them being in a small cage just for the sake of humans entertainment! They inform you about all the animals and their history which also helps you to understand the animal rights in (south) Africa more. So all in all a pleasant experience and a good sanctuary to support.

I absolutely loved this experience: it was very educational, it raised our awareness of what is actually happening out there with wild cats. I love what they stand for, they ethics and love and care for animals. Claire handled our group so well despite of so many small kids. I know I will visit again because we all thoroughly enjoyed it!

Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary is an absolute gem and one of the very few true ethical sanctuaries in South Africa. Their passion and dedication to the welfare of the big cats is evident in every detail. This isn’t about petting or playing with the animals and that’s exactly how it should be. Unlike many other big cat parks, Panthera is all about respecting the animals, giving them the space, care, and dignity they deserve. We had Kate as our guide, and she was fantastic her knowledge, engaging storytelling, and willingness to answer every question made the experience truly memorable. Thank you for such an incredible time, Kate. Hearing the cats’ stories and learning about the work being done here left me inspired to support their cause. For anyone visiting or travelling near the Hermanus area, this is an absolute must-visit. You’re not just enjoying a unique experience you’re contributing to an incredible mission. Please consider visiting and donating to help them continue this vital work.

Excellent sanctuary. Definitely worth a visit. Our guide Kate gave us extensive knowledge about the breeding trade as well as the bone trade in South Africa. She also gave us the back stories of the saved animals in the sanctuary which gave them character. Instead of just a tiger/lion etc they had names and a survival story. Definitely recommending for friends and family.
Olivia N — Google review
Absolutely amazing tour, very knowledgeable staff and insightful tour that managed to get very close to the cats.
Mark R — Google review
You need to book a tour in advance, as individual visits aren’t allowed — rightly so, in the interest of the animals’ well-being. Our guide Kate was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of information, which is exactly what you’d hope for from an educational visit. We were able to see all the resident felines and learned in depth about the wildcats, the sanctuary’s background and, on the contrary, the broader industry that exploits big cats. It was clear that everything here is truly done with the animals’ welfare in mind. A must for anyone who wants to understand the realities behind South Africa’s wildlife industry.

Great bunch of guys working there. Friendly and helpful. Booking and communication is good. It is a bit tricky getting there. No real signs to tell you where to go. Best to ask for directions by the casino staff. The park itself is a bit run down. No real maintenance has been in a while. Overall we still had a good time.

Booked the quad biking with my wife and had the most fantastic time. JP was an amazing guide who showed us around some beautiful locations and was very informative about the places we stopped of at. Always looking in his mirrors to check our safety and making sure we were close by at all times. Definitely a must do if staying in Capetown.

Our family of two adults and two teens spent four memorable days on the river with Jason and his very professional and friendly support team. Our boat was guided by Nkosi, whose river experience put all of us at ease even in the hairier moments through the rapids. We felt safe at all times, the food was outstanding and the camp locations along the banks of the Orange were among the best we’ve experienced. Highly recommend this trip - enjoyed it so much we’re considering when to do it again.

Thank you to Jason, Charlie and the crew on the Orange River trip. You guys went all out to still let us have a great river experience even though we couldn't do the original advertised trip due to the river flooding and safety concerns. The team was friendly, helpful and so accommodating. We had a great time and will be back!

Did the 25km quad trail in Caledon with a few friends and it was really a great experience. Would certainly try out their Hermanus trails as well in the future. The quads are easy to drive (automatic) and the route itself is not difficult.

We went quad biking and had a blast! It was quiet so we had our own private tour. The guide ensured we were happy regularly along the way and even offered to take some videos of us on the bikes. Such fun!

Situated in the picturesque Witzenberg Valley, the trails take riders through vineyards, forests, and farmland against the stunning backdrop of the Witzenberg Mountains. The hosts, Jo and John, provide a fantastic experience with well-behaved horses and unrivaled scenery.
It was a lovely experience. Stunning scenery and very healthy happy horses. The horses were also well paired to riders suited from absolute beginners to advanced skill level. The owners and facilitators were very friendly and gave good briefing for beginners and a nice introduction of each rider to their horse. As an extreme novice I felt comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed the outride. Will definitely be back and do recommend Horse About Trails.

Retired my horse here 3 years ago and she is happier and healthier then she's ever been. I can't recommend Jo enough. My girls is alway in great condition when I visit and any issues I get notified immediately. No also keeps me updated with cute videos and messages about my girl and how she's don't. It's also such a beautiful farm. Wish I was living there.

Jo and John are superb hosts of this fantastic horse outride experience. John (on Tequila) was patient, informative and very attentive of our capabilities. My daughters (aged 9) and I went on the Witzenberg trail which had a fun section through water, a roudy Troup of baboons and a Blue Crane mating pair. The girls have some riding experience so we could trot for awhile too. Very excited to come back in Deceber for another ride, perhaps ready for the Canter! Thanks for the awesome time on Tata, Kommando and Dom Pedro..

With convenient parking and access pathways, it's a popular choice for both locals and visitors seeking a stress-free day by the sea.
Beautiful white sandy beach, the place to be for sunsets. Clean ablutions.

I have visited this beach in winter and with it not many people were around. Very suprised at the cleaniness of all the facilities. Keep it up💯👍 Here you can braai or just sit and enjoy the splendours of nature. At this point the lagoon is flowing into the ocean. Ample of parking available but in school holidays this scenario will and can change. Ablution facilities are in a very good condition.🌟😁

Excellent beach!! Sufficient parking, clean beach and crystal clear water (cold though). Safe, secure, and helpful staff. They kindly informed me of a beach chair/buggy for partially abled people. It's able to take them into the water so everyone can enjoy the beach.

Unfortunately it was a rainy day, but we had a satisfying culinary experience and the friendly manager and staff, who made sure to make us feel welcome, were heartwarming. Stunning view while you sit and dine.

What an amazing beach that is safe and well managed by the lifeguards. There was also continued presence of law enforcement officials in the parking area to ensure traffic rules obided by all. Sun umbrellas and beach chairs to rent on the beach
Andries P — Google review
Grotto beach is a great place to relax and soak up the sun. During the peak season in summer it can get quite busy, but there is more than enough space so it doesn't get overly crowded. I am not sure if there is always a Life Guard on duty, but when we visited there was. There were also other activities for the kids such as a rock climbing wall, and with a couple of restaurants close by you can easily spend the entire day there. Although we only went for a walk along the beach, I have previously swum there and the water was cool but bearable. Grotto Beach is recognized as a Blue Flag beach.
Dewald R — Google review
A Lovely long flat stretch of beach. The sunsets are beautiful there. There are ablutions, a coffee van, ice cream and kiosks. Small play area for the kids. Life guards are on duty in season. There is plenty of parking BUT during the summer holidays it can be difficult to find parking and you might have to walk a long distance to where the swimming beach area is.
Maryke J — Google review
Definitely a blue flag beach. Ample parking, large beach area, 2 restaurants and snack venues, public toilets and a braai / picnic area. Not to mention caves and a trail you can walk. There is plenty of parking, but it can be difficult during summer and holidays.

Visitors can also enjoy landscaped gardens and stunning views of Walker Bay. The reserve provides various activities such as picnicking, bird watching, and exploring the herbarium.
A must see reserve in Hermanus. The staff members in the visitor’s centre were very kind and knowledgeable. The reserve is kept spotless and none of the trails, including the remote ones, were overgrown. There is a large variety of flowers, especially ericas. Some of the many native trees in the valley are labelled which is a nice touch. Furthermore, there are multiple benches all over for one to rest and admire the view and all the dangerous parts have a railing or support of some sort.

What a wonderful little trail .free to enter. We attempted the 3 Damme trail on a cool Sunday morning the rangers at the start were very helpful in pointing us in the right direction and the signage is also very clear as to where to go . The path to the 1st dam was well marked and took 30 minutes to reach at a leisurely pace , stopping a lot to take photos of the gorgeous views . We only did the 1st dam and headed back and encountered some baboons on our return but then just went in another direction when they saw us and all was well. Overall loved the location.

Fernkloof is a truly stunning nature reserve with a variety of hiking trails for all levels. We chose the Red Trail to the waterfall, which we completed in about 90 minutes. The route was not only enjoyable but rewarded us with absolutely beautiful views of the mountains and surrounding landscape. A special thank you goes to the Visitor Centre staff and the ranger on duty: their warm welcome, guidance on the routes, and presence to ensure safety made the experience even better. If you’re in Hermanus, this is an absolute must-visit for nature lovers.

Hiked up the beautiful Fernkloof Nature Reserve to the waterfall and met Mr Tortoise at the start. Then the bench of "quiet contemplation". Lots of steps. Saw a beautiful U-shaped rock formation and we saw some beautiful flowers. Climbed up to the waterfall, stunningly beautiful. Worth the climb. Saw a beautiful gem of a fern. Stunning walk back. We met a Bearded Dragon I think, I named him Steven Tyler. Beautiful walk to sooth the Soul. Highly recommend this.

A lovely relatively gentle 4km walk up Fernkloof loop to get great views of the surrounding hills and down over Hermanus. We saw baboons up close, as well as the wild tortoises.

One of the best nature reserves open to the public. There are many trails to choose from, ranging from beginner to expert. There is ample parking available, with security guards on duty. The also have rangers who are there to hike with you if you want. The trails are quite open to the elements, there is not much tree or shade cover. So remember your sunscreen, and windbreaker.

We visited here as a road to Franschheok from Wilderness. We didn’t know that there is a pass here. This pass is awesome! You can enjoy beautiful mountains and canyons. There are not many cars in the road. And there are some points to park the car and see the view. Is it worth to visit? Absolutely! Here is just 5-10minutes from Franschhoek. And round trip from Franschhoek would be take an hour. Highly recommended!

I had an amazing Easter celebration with close friends at Dieu Donné Vineyards today! The botanical range with chocolates was a personal favorite; the wines were delightful. The brownie pairing with bubbly was also incredible. The views from the vineyard are simply astonishing. Highly recommend! ❤️

Great views and great sparking wines! We came here as part of the wine tram experience (pink line) and decided to do the sparkling wine with brownie pairing. It all matched great with the views and overall experience. The staff were very friendly and the pairing was very good. Only comment would be to serve each sparkling wine separately rather than all at once. If you’re there on a hot day, by the time you get to the last sparkling wine, it’s already a bit warm so not as enjoyable as it could have been. Other than that. Definitely recommended!

Well worth a visit. Most beautiful views from above the valley with a pleasant breeze on a hot summer day. The sharing platter was generous and the wines delicious. Xavier was a perfect host. Attentive yet relaxed and just enough detail on the wines.

A shame, but the only good thing about this winery is the view. Best view on the tram line by farrr. But, we ordered the premium wine tasting and they were actually awful. Like really bad, and that’s with it being our final stop but even us being a little tipsy didn’t make them better. Go for the view but I wouldn’t wast your time after that. The service was fine. Thanks

The stall takes pride in sourcing the freshest produce from local farmers and also offers honey, nuts, biltong, and oversized sausage rolls.
"We had a lovely stopover at the buzzing Houw Hoek Padstal, known for its freshly baked pies, sausage rolls, and a wide variety of homemade treats. And off course a lovely cup of coffee. We were very excited to try their famous pies. My partners steak and kidney was great. He loved it. My steak curry left a lot to be desired. The pastry was great but that was in no way a curry steak. Neither Malay and most definitely not Indian curry. Zero spice factor just extremely sweet. Tasted like a chutney pie 😢. Apparently it’s their most popular flavour. I cannot understand why. Extremely disappointed.

We visited Cape Canopy Tour as a group of 20 people, and every single one of us had an amazing time! The entire experience lasted around 4 hours and included 11 incredible ziplines, some stretching up to 330 meters — absolutely thrilling! The guides were fantastic — super helpful, professional, and full of energy. They made sure everyone felt safe and comfortable, and they added so much fun to the whole adventure with their great sense of humor and encouragement. The scenery was beautiful, the lines were long and fast, and the whole experience was unforgettable. Highly recommended for groups, families, or anyone looking for an exciting outdoor activity!

I came for the thrills but ended up feeling contemplative and enjoying the awesome, nearly transcendent environment of the mountains. Felt safe and professional. The guides were very friendly and fun. The drive to the lines was probably sketchier and more dangerous than the zip lines! But fun. My only recommendation: pay your guides properly so there isn't the awkwardness of tipping.

Safety was always a top priority throughout the experience. Our guides, Brandon and Hilda, were an amazing, truly legendary, making the whole adventure so much fun. Been there 7 years ago and was there for a second time earlier today. Still a great experience with kind staff. You feel safe all along the day and will have a great time. I would also like to positively mention that after we couldn't make it on short notice to a previous reservation a few days prior, due to unexpected roadworks, they immediately gave us a refund without any hassle. Keep up the good spirits guys and see you again!!

Absolutely unforgettable experience! Even on a cloudy day, the views were breathtaking—mist rolling over the mountains made everything feel extra magical. The team was professional, fun, and made us feel completely safe the whole time. The drive through the reserve in the adventure jeep was calming, and the little nature facts about fynbos and the area added such a thoughtful touch. But the real highlight? The ziplines! Each one felt like flying, with just the right mix of serenity and adrenaline 😄 Would 100% recommend this to anyone visiting Cape Town—rain or shine, it’s pure therapy.

A must especially if you are a car guy. The museum is very well kept and has a huge variety of cars to view. A bonus is that the cars have an interesting read for those wanting to learn more about them. They also have a place to get food and beverages for those that would like as well as their famous wines. I would recommend taking a drive through the beautiful Franschhoek town and driving the pass towards Villiersdorp. The views are stunning!
Grounded N — Google review
The Franschhoek Motor Museum exhibits a commendable collection of cars displayed across four large buildings. It begins with a clear, chronological display, which is excellent to understand the evolution of automotive history. However, later on, it stops, and vehicles appear to be grouped without any clear relevance. Maybe some arrived later, and it was too inconvenient to place them next to their chronological partners? To enhance the visitor experience, a little more context connecting the cars to key historical moments or better highlighting their technical developments would make it even a more memorable experience. Getting to the exhibition is an experience itself, going through the beautiful landscape.

I had an excellent experience visiting the complex. I entered through the Anthony Rupert Gate, where a tram picked me up and took me on a very pleasant ride through the gardens (about 20 minutes) on the way to the museum. The whole visit was enjoyable, and the ticket price was unbelievably affordable at only R90. Highly recommended!

This is really something to believe, what an awesome and great experience we had at this place, if you are a car enthusiast then this is the place for you, at every car and bike there is a stand with very useful and interesting facts on the vehicle about it, not expensive at all and really worth it, do yourself a favor visit this place and you won't be disappointed.

Visited with my boys and we all had an amazing time. The collection is beautifully maintained and offers something for everyone. The setting in the Winelands made the whole experience even more special. My boys were fascinated by how the cars have evolved through the years. Highly recommend for families and anyone who appreciates automotive history!

We were in Stellenbosch to visit some wineries and decided on "the spur of the moment" to visit the Museum, not realizing that an appoint was necessary. The guard said this would not be a problem and just wanted some ID and directed us to reception. its really worth a visit. There is a great selection of cars, from very old to recent. I think great thought has gone into picking examples that really show iconic points in the history of society and its relationship to cars. Examples like, VW Beetle convertible, Cord, Audi Quattro, Karman Ghia. Although the Audi (2006 example) you can find on the street, in years to come, will you actually be able to restore something like this, so its planning for the future. After the 4 barns, a coffee on the veranda over looking the garden did the trick. If your there, it really worth the visit

Large exposure of many different types of antiques automobiles. Very interesting to see old Fords, BMWs, especially Bugatti, for me. My spouse was surprised by seeing so rare vintage automobiles as well. Highly recommend if you are interested in cars world.

Afrikaans Taalmonument

Nestled atop Paarl Mountain, the Afrikaans Language Monument stands as a striking tribute to the evolution of Afrikaans from its roots as a dialect of Dutch to an official language. Erected in 1975 to mark half a century since its recognition, this stunning structure features abstract stone formations that symbolize the diverse influences shaping Afrikaans. Designed by architect Jan van Wijk, it harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding landscape and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque winelands below.
Absolutely an awesome experience. Such a nice drive on a well maintained tar road up the mountain. Paid a small entrance fee, discounts for students and pensioners. Short walk up to the monument. Lovely gardens and benches, breathtaking views. Even a tree route featuring 40 indigenous plants. The monument is well cared for and impressive to say the least. The visitors center is informative Little coffee shop at the parking lot
Verushka J — Google review
Museum, cafe, picnic zones 👍 The Taalmonument is not just a sculptural structure; it’s a narrative in concrete. Van Wijk designed its forms to represent the cultural and linguistic influences that contributed to the formation of Afrikaans. Tall spires suggest the influence of European languages, while curved elements reflect contributions from Africa and the East. The bridge-like components symbolize the connection between the past and the future of the language. What makes the design particularly striking is its non-linear storytelling — visitors are invited to walk around and interpret the symbolism from different angles. The monument becomes an interactive space where language, memory, and national identity converge
Olga B — Google review
Interesting monument where you can learn a lot about Afrikaans. Info is easily digested and being out in nature makes the whole experience very pleasant. The views from the monument are a huge bonus and there is a coffee shop if you want to spend some more time taking it all in. Well worth a visit.

The Afrikaans Taalmonument is a uniquely special place to admire the surrounding scenery from a breathtaking view. The monument itself is spectacular 👌. The garden is especially nice with benches all around. Making it a perfect place to sit with a loved one and enjoy the picturesque garden and rich history.

A bit out of the way, this wonderful monument is not likely to be a top stop when you are in Cape Town wine country - but try to make it so. The memorial commemorates the Afrikaans language, a blend of influences from many languages. Built in the mi-1970s, the memorial is a soaring architectural design marvel and engineering/construction feat. And, as with many Cape sites, the landscaping was carefully curated and maintained and the views spectacular.

Die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum & Monument – Paarl, Western Cape ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ As a traveler exploring the Western Cape, visiting the Die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum & Monument in Paarl was a refreshing and educational experience. The monument is perched on a hill with breathtaking panoramic views of the valley, mountains, and surrounding vineyards – perfect for photos, especially at sunset. The museum offers fascinating insights into the history and development of the Afrikaans language, with well-organized exhibits and warm, knowledgeable staff. For first-time visitors: Entry fee is only R40 per adult (affordable and worth it). Safe, free parking is available on-site. Wear comfortable shoes – there’s a bit of walking and stairs. Best times to visit are mornings or late afternoons for cooler weather and softer light. It’s a peaceful combination of culture, history, and nature, making it a must-visit in Paarl.

Fairview Wine and Cheese, situated in Paarl, is a charming vineyard and goat farm that provides an array of delightful experiences. Visitors can indulge in wine and cheese tasting sessions while taking in the picturesque surroundings. The estate features a Mediterranean-style restaurant called Goatshed, where guests can savor delectable dishes. Families will especially enjoy interacting with the friendly goats and exploring the beautiful gardens and lawns.
Tasting was amazing, along with the cheese pairing. Our hostess who is from Paarl was awesome and lovely to converse with. She made the experience even better. The deli is exciting and affordable. Highly recommend this place, and can’t reiterate enough how delicious the cheese is here.
Laura-Lee G — Google review
Amazing tasting at Fairview Winery. Grant it was a bit weird drinking wine at 9am in the morning but we had to start somewhere. The wine and cheese flights are so reasonably priced. In Australia it would easily be 5 times the price. Our server was engaging and gave us instructions on how to enjoy the wine along with the matching cheeses. You need to stand at the bar, stools would have been nice. Shame the biltong relish we had with the cheeses was out of stock in the shop as you would have had 5 sales! Was delish. I bought a nice pottery tray with a goat stamp motif and some fudge nougat. Huge selection of cheeses, dips and cured meats.

What another phenomenal wine and cheese experience we just had! This is ny far my favorite winery in the Paarl Region, as everything just comes perfectly together! We once again did the Master wine tasting with one of the best sommelier in the region, Deirdre. She paced the 8 wine and cheese pairing perfectly, by giving our group great insights on each bottle. The wines and cheeses were all delicious, especially the goat cheeses, which is what they're known for. I can't wait to be back again soon, and two thumbs way up to Deirdre!!

While our time here was not long we did have something to eat and a good look around unfortunately we didn't do the tastings. It is set in beautiful surroundings in beautiful buildings nature is everywhere from squirrels to birds to goats 🐐 We stopped at the goats shed and had a few cocktails which were very nice some of the best I had , I think it was called french 75 and a whiskey sour which had the name goat in it but they were very nice. For food we went with the chef's platter which came with 🧀, 🍖 🍞 bread was homemade and cheese was there own of course . Overall it was a lovely experience and I would definitely come back .

Had an excellent Masters Tasting at Fairview. We try to do this every year and it never disappoints. Not only is the wine incredible and unique but the cheese and other food sold in the shop is fantastic. We always stock up on some essentials when stopping here. Highly recommend the master’s tasting which in comparison to other tastings in the area is an amazing deal and experience.
Zoie T — Google review
We had a great time at Fairview. Our hostess was amazing. The great thing is that the premises allow kids to take part and they are offered sparkling juice along with their cheese. One area of improvement though: with many groups at the same time, the main hall becomes noisy and it is difficult to hear the hostess clearly
Yashvin A — Google review
Just a wonderful day out just to sit and take in the views. The cheese sampling was exquisite as was the wine tasting and for me, the prices in the shop we most competitive . Well worth a drive from Cape Town
Ross H — Google review
Tried the cheese and wine pairing here and it was fantastic! Just a heads-up—there’s usually a 1–2 hour wait since they don’t take bookings, and weekends can get really busy. You can wander around the wine farm while you wait for your tasting slot. Don’t miss the little shop. It's full of great products. I may have gone overboard and bought a ton of cheese... no pun intended!

After that, we visited the tea and spice shop, which was really charming and well-organized, with a great selection of spices and teas. Of course, we didn’t leave without buying some! It's a lovely place for everyone, whether you have pets or kids, as there's plenty of space for them to enjoy themselves. With a wide range of shops and activities, we relaxed outdoors, savored our pizza under the warm winter sun while allowing the child to play freely in the playground. We explored several stores and felt that our time spent here was too short, we will definitely come back!

Well worth the drive from Cape Town for a wonderful day out. So much to see and do but I'll try: Wonderful views, al fresco dining, restaurants tastefully decorated with antique furniture. There's a brewery with tastings, a food shop, bakery, pies and lovely smelling spices. A chocolate shop, an ice cream parlour. Children's play area. I'm sure I missed a few things but why not go yourself and explore.

🌶️ Unexpectedly Awesome Blend of Flavors and Views! I originally came here for a work function, but I left with an incredible, custom-made souvenir! The spice blending experience was the absolute highlight—a truly immersive, hands-on activity that connected me to the spirit of the old spice routes. I got to play 'master blender,' creating my very own exotic mix to take home and jazz up my cooking. Paired with those stunning Paarl valley views? It's a fantastic sensory journey. Come for the views, stay for the adventure of crafting your own perfect blend!

Haven't been here for years. It has become very diversified and an interesting place to visit. If you enjoy beer, there is a craft beer tasting... Wine or tea... Tasting rooms. Need an ornament or gift, got it. Beautiful views, fire place and plenty of place for kids to play. It's become a destination and not your gewone wine tasting plekkie. We went to Fairview down the road... So that's also handy.

Babylonstoren is a luxurious spa that offers guests treatments such as massage, facials, and beauty services. Although the spa lacks a certain something special or magical to make it 5 stars, it is still very close.
Fab visit to this incredible farm. They really have put do much thought, time & attention to detail. The gardens are not just beautifully attended but educational. The shops selling coffee & essential oils where you can make your own Bath salts..stunning. The only slightly let down was the wine tasting experience. Our waiter was distracted with us having to constantly remind him our choice of wine tasting packages. The express one really not worth it if you enjoy wine tasting...go for the more expensive options!! The food platter was delicous when it came..service was slow but then they were extremely busy. It's a must visit you can easily spend a few hours there.

This farm is one for the books! There was the most interactive museum of the history of wine and the farm was filled with all sorts of fruit you can pick and sights you can cherish . They had a massive range of bonsai trees, which was amazing, the oldest one was 87 years old.

Babylonstoren has so much to offer. It is more than a farm. They have a restaurant, store, fruit garden, cycad garden, arid garden, canals, childrens play area, flowers everywhere and so much more. You can easily wonder around for hours. We went in spring so the fruit were not ready for picking and the grapes were still young. I would suggest the best time to go is in summer. You will see all sorts of fruit on trees including bunches of grapes hanging from overhead trellises and flowers galore. It would be an excellent venue for weddings or parties. I loved it.

One of the best things to do in Franschhoek in winter! We were almost alone and had the huge (cold) swimming pool, the warm jacuzzi, the sauna, the steam bath and the salt room for ourselves! Wonderful surroundings with the mountains, very forecoming staff. We also booked a duo massage which was extraordinary and drank some complimentary fresh juices after! We paid 80 Euro per person for all this - a fair price in my opinion!

Vergelegen Wine Estate is a renowned establishment with sunset vineyard and cellar tours, themed gardens, and an upscale restaurant. The estate is known for its exceptional gardens as well as its wines. Visitors can explore the expansive grounds and guided tours to witness the winter-blooming camellia trees, which make up South Africa's first International Camellia Garden of Excellence.
Vergelegen Wine Estate is absolutely beautiful! The gardens are massive and so well kept – honestly worth every bit of the R20 entry fee just to walk around and enjoy the scenery. On top of that, the wines are incredible. You can buy bottles to take home, and I picked up two reds that taste amazing. Such a stunning place to spend a day, I’d definitely recommend it.
Georgia C — Google review
Vergelegen Wine Estate is honestly one of my favourite spots to escape to. The estate is absolutely beautiful – from the tree-lined drive to the stunning gardens, it feels like a peaceful retreat. I loved how rich in history it is, but still feels modern with its tasting room and restaurant. The wine? Top tier – especially their reds. It’s the kind of place you go for a wine tasting and end up staying way longer than planned. If you’re ever in Somerset West, it’s 100% worth the visit.
Christopher P — Google review
We had the wine tasting and the pic nic at Vergelegen. The pic nic is in a beautiful setting in the camphor tree forest. The food was good and I especially liked the malay chicken salad. The vichyssoise was also delicious. The diversity of food is almost too much that we thought they could reduce it a bit and focus more on the quality. All of the food was cold and not just freshly made, for example the spanakopita were out of the fridge along with everything else. It was very cold on that day and it took a while to get a blanket, they were small and not warm. The selection if wines by the glass was very disappointing for a wine farm, they aim to sell mostly bottles. The tables are also a bit close together so I think it’s good to specify if you want to be further apart. For the wine tasting, the vergelegen V was nice but for the price it’s possible to find better ones. The cap classique was nice
Sara F — Google review
Went there with the intention of having breakfast at the Rose Terrace but couldn’t find it - signage is a bit vague. Landed up having a beautiful breakfast at Stables instead. Landed up spending hours wandering around the gardens and visited the library and homestead. The ladies who oversee these two areas have a wealth of knowledge and imparted so much information. It was also explained to us that the entrance fee at the gate goes toward leopard conservation - perhaps this should have been made a bit clearer at the gate. We felt it was worth every penny. Reading the reviews of people who complain about the entrance fee I am gobsmacked by the tight fistedness of people especially those who are clearly from Europe where you pay more to use a public toilet. For those who complain about certain items not being on the menu, do your homework and actually go to a restaurant that serves the items you crave. I would happily go back and pay the entrance fee knowing it is going to a good cause.

Always a magical experience - went for a picnic with the family this year and truly felt like we were in our own little world in the forest. My glass was never empty, plate never lacking and heart never not full of joy. We make an effort to visit every year and could not recommend more!!

We recently visited Vergelegen Wine Estate and had an incredible experience at The Stables Restaurant. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the most beautiful scenery — tranquil gardens, mountain views, and that calm atmosphere that makes Vergelegen so special. The restaurant offers a relaxed yet elegant setting with friendly and attentive staff who made us feel welcome throughout our visit. The food was absolutely delicious — fresh, well-presented, and full of flavour. Each dish was clearly made with care and attention to detail. After our meal, we enjoyed a peaceful walk through the gardens and estate, which rounded off the day perfectly. Vergelegen is truly one of those timeless Cape Winelands gems — ideal for a relaxed lunch, special occasion, or weekend outing. Highly recommended! 🍷

Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens, also known as little Kirstenbosch, is a popular destination for hiking and wildlife viewing. The gardens showcase a diverse range of flora and cultivated ecosystems, including local fynbos with proteas, restios, and over 50 ericas. Additionally, visitors can explore Stony Point to see the remains of a whaling station and observe land-based whale watching opportunities.
A wonderful experience! The selfish me wants to keep quiet about this gem, but how can you keep such an experience from others?! The gardens are very well kept, the signs so informative and the scenery breathtaking. The short trails are user friendly and there are enough benches along the way to take a break and enjoy the environment. Bird live is abundant and binoculars are recommended.

Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens is one of the most well-maintained gardens you will see in the Western Cape. It's so easy to navigate and the paths are designed to be wheelchair friendly. Not only can you relax at linger in the gardens, there's an effort to educated with various environments created and the longer you stay, the more you will learn. The indigenous knowledge section stood out for us as the most educational, but all the areas are well-presented. There are benches to relax whether you prefer sun or shade. And then you excellent staff: Etienne was particularly helpful to obvious tourists by giving great advice on where to go and what to see in the garden. It costs R60 (about $3) per person to visit. The bathrooms are all clean, neat and safe.

The reserve features elevated boardwalks that meander through stunning landscapes dotted with boulders and coastal views, making it easy to get up close to the penguins without disturbing them.
great place 😍 entrance costs 40 rand. there are a lot of penguins here, just hundreds. we were on sunday, it was warm and despite this there were not many tourists. penguins at every step. lots of baby penguins. also several penguins built a house for themselves right next to the parking lot, there were mothers and their two penguins. mostly penguins are lazy and just lie around. amazing emotions. There is a parking lot, toilets and a cafe.

I recently visited Stony Point Nature Reserve, and honestly, I found the place a bit boring. At the end of the road leading to the reserve, there's a barrier where you have to pay an entrance fee of 40 Rand to get in. I went ahead and paid the fee, hoping for something interesting inside. However, once inside, the experience didn't really meet my expectations. There wasn't much to see or do, and overall, the place felt quite dull. I wouldn’t personally recommend it unless you’re really interested in penguins or have extra time to spare.

🌟 **Cheetah Outreach – A Wildly Amazing Experience!** 🌟 Visiting the Cheetah Outreach, in Somerset West was hands-down one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. I signed up for the animal encounter and the feeding tour, and every moment was packed with awe, education, and pure joy. The highlight was getting to interact with Zorro, the 9-month-old cheetah cub. Though he was almost the same size as a fully grown cheetah, Zorro has the most soulful eyes and gentle demeanor. Getting to stroke him was surreal—his sleek fur and calm presence made the moment feel magical. What made it even more special was leerning about his surrogate dog brother, who stood loyally by his side. Hearing about their bond was an eye opener to the dedication, compassion and care that goes into conservation work. The feeding tour added a whole new layer of insight. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, walking us through the animals diets, behaviors, and the challenges they face in the wild. It wasn’t just cheetahs there were servals, jackals and meerkats as well. A big thank you to the team of volunteers and conservation experts. I left the cheetah outreach with amazing photos and memories, but also with a deeper appreciation for earths majestic creatures and the people working tirelessly to ensure their survival. 🧡 Highly recommend for animal lovers, conservation enthusiasts, or anyone looking to connect with animals in a deep meaningful way.

Cheetah Outreach is an unforgettable experience with a powerful mission behind it. Their goal is to protect cheetahs through education, awareness, and conservation partnerships and you can feel how much the staff truly cares about these animals. They work closely with farmers and communities to reduce conflict and help save cheetahs from extinction, which gave so much meaning to the visit. Being able to get up close to a cheetah was one of the coolest moments of my life. These animals are absolutely beautiful and surprisingly calm when you’re near them. The staff made safety the top priority and treated the cheetahs with so much love and respect it never felt like a “tourist attraction,” but more like being welcomed into a conservation project that matters. I learned so much, and getting to gently touch a cheetah while hearing it purr is something I’ll never forget. If you’re visiting Cape Town and want to support responsible wildlife conservation, I highly recommend stopping here. It’s educational, inspiring, and truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. # Safari

It's a surreal experience seeing them upfront and being able to touch one or more. The handlers/care takers are very well knowledgeable in the area and enriched me after the whole experience.

What a wonderful facility and the staff couldn’t be kinder. We were able to meet Zorro today. Their one year old cub on his birthday and are very thankful that we had this experience up so close with such a powerful animal. Many thanks to Donna for spending time with us and giving Insights on the life of a cheetah and how they are different than many other cats of South Africa. Highly recommend you book a few days in advance at least.

Quick Takeaways 🅿️ Free off-road parking 🐆 Small to medium-sized facility with various animals (not just cheetahs) 💬 Reception staff unfriendly and disengaged 🌐 Website unclear and slightly misleading 📸 A-typical fencing makes photography difficult Hot weather = animals hiding in the shade Cheetah encounters (R100–R200) must be pre-booked 🤷‍♂️ Okay for a quick visit, but plan ahead for a better experience Full Review The Cheetah Outreach Experience is a medium-sized setup that’s easy to find, with off-road parking and a very affordable entrance fee of just 10 rand — though, in my case, that price felt about right for what was on offer. I arrived with a group of six others without pre-booking, and while that was our mistake, the reception experience was poor. The man running the front desk (a medium-sized wooden structure called The Cat Shack) was clearly having a bad day — he came across as flustered, short-tempered, and generally disengaged. He told us they were short-staffed and unable to run any tours, which we acknowledged given we hadn’t planned ahead, but the lack of warmth or professionalism and confusion of the website didn’t help. We were left to wander the site ourselves. There are actually quite a few animals beyond the cheetahs — foxes, shepherd dogs, a tortoise, and meerkats — but photography is almost impossible thanks to the tight mesh fencing used for most enclosures. Not something I’ve seen before in other similar setups. If you visit on a hot sunny day, don’t expect to see much activity — most animals were hiding in the shade when I went. You can pay between 100–200 rand for a cheetah encounter, which allows you to gently stroke a ‘tame’ cheetah under supervision. The volunteers seemed attentive and safety-conscious, and the cheetahs behaved much like domestic cats — affectionate if they felt like it, aloof if not. The Cat Shack doubles as the gift shop, selling some decent merchandise. However, the website is misleading, implying you can simply turn up for tours throughout the day, with only enrichment sessions being timed — in reality, that’s not the case. It also only advises pre-booking for groups of 10+, which doesn’t reflect what actually happens. Because of the unclear information, unwelcoming reception staff, and limited experience, I can only give this place 3 stars. Plan ahead if you go — and set expectations accordingly.

My friend and I visited Cheetah Outreach with our young children, excited to experience the sanctuary. Unfortunately, we arrived just five minutes after a tour had started and were told there may not be any more tours that day. The front desk staff advised us to walk through the facility on our own. While we understand the need for quiet around wild animals, we were taken aback by how rudely the cheetah handlers interacted with us. Our children, naturally excited, were abruptly shouted at to be quiet—without any prior warning or gentle guidance. It was uncomfortable, but we complied. When I tried to inquire about paid activities with the cheetahs, I was ignored by multiple staff members. Eventually, as I spoke to one handler, another suddenly shouted at my friend’s 4-year-old daughter to stop running. She had been scared and was reacting to a cheetah that appeared to be stalking her from behind a fence. The situation escalated when a handler loudly told the little girl that the cheetah might think she was food and could eat her. This was a deeply inappropriate and frightening thing to say to a child, no matter the context. There was no effort to calmly explain safety protocols to us or to create a welcoming environment. We completely understand the importance of rules in a wildlife setting. But there is a respectful and professional way to communicate those rules—especially to families with children. Screaming at kids and using fear as a tactic is not acceptable. We were excited to support this facility, but we left feeling upset and unwelcome. Based on this experience, I would not recommend a visit—particularly to families with young children.

We came for the feeding experience at 3:30pm, and had a great time watching the animals eating. The staff were extremely knowledgeable about the animals and could answer all our questions with ease. It’s quite hot, so I would recommend bringing a hat and sunscreen even though the park is not extremely expansive. There is free parking on site, and in a secure parking lot.

An educational and insightful place to visit. We did not make it for the show but being able to see the owls, jackal buzzards, secretary bird and eagles made it worth it. Would advise to plan for the 11 or 2 pm shows.

One of my favourite places and I can't believe I hadn't left a review til now. Eagle Encounters does such important work in the rescue and rehabilitation of birds and other animals. Their shows are extremely educational, explaining how different kinds of birds make use of their unique traits. They also help create awareness of the various threats these birds face, and how we could make a difference. I've been a regular visitor for about 6 years, and I still learn something new each time I go there.

Such an amazingly, fantastic day out! You just want to stay all day to see and learn all about the different birds that they have and are helping. These guys do such great work. It's really affordable to go and visit. They have quite a few shows during the day ( 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00), they might have one or two of the same demonstrations in each but they also have different birds in each show as well. And all are informative, you're always learning a bit more with each show. The handler we had today, Clinton, was amazing. Great with the animals. And really helpful with any and all our questions. Would definitely love to visit again in future.

We stayed at Spier Hotel for just one night during our honeymoon — and we truly wish we had stayed longer. The estate is absolutely stunning and serene, perfect for winding down. Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and even had a cozy fireplace. We had a good dinner at the restaurant, a good opportunity to pair with the wine they produce and took full advantage of the amazing spa with a 60-minute massage — one of the best spa experiences I’ve ever had. There’s also wine tasting and other relaxing activities on site. A peaceful, elegant escape. Strongly recommend!

I had a wonderful experience at Spier Hotel. The hotel itself is amazing, has a beautiful location and incredible staff. I would like to highlight how attentive and extremely helpful the staff was when I lost my necklace after I went to the spa. Many staff members immediately started helping and retraced my steps to find my necklace and they quickly found it! I am so grateful for their help and dedication. Thank you for a wonderful stay at Spier, I would love to return some time.
