African Relish Culinary Venue is a cooking school and tourism destination located in Prince Albert, Great Karoo, South Africa. Established twelve years ago, it offers recreational cooking classes for culinary travelers and food enthusiasts. The venue aims to provide an original foodie experience for both local and international markets amidst South Africa's rich food culture and traditional cuisine. In addition to the cooking school, African Relish now features a well-stocked delicatessen and restaurant.
This was recommended by our accommodation. Smack bang in the middle of town it’s a bright airy spacious kitchen. We did the afternoon class so we could eat an early supper. We made many different delicious dishes opting for the Karoo lamb which is a must try whilst in the area. My husband usually just the the veg prep guy made focaccia bread which turned out amazingly! I was impressed! It’s a really relaxed fun atmosphere and we had a lovely afternoon. You can buy wine by the glass/bottle to enjoy as you cook. We had the delicious rose.

We arrived on a busy night. Upon recommendation from the manager at our guest house, we decided to give the dog-friendly AND wheelchair-accessible Chefs Cafe a try. They were incredibly busy, but luckily we had already booked a table. However there was no one on hand to show us to our table The highlight for the evening was meeting Chef Kenton, who was in charge of making the gourmet pizzas - which were flying out of the clay oven! He took the time to explain to me exactly how he made the pizzas, and it's done so amazingly. However, I did not have the pizza. I had the steak. What made the steak special was their spekboom & pickled radish salsa. Spekboom is otherwise called “pork bush” and is indigenous to South Africa. The salsa was incredible - really absolutely delicious! So, if for no other reason, visit Chefs Cafe to try the spekboom and salsa alone! *Note: Apparently their gardens are also spectacular. We went at night, but we saw a few

We had a short getaway in Prince Albert and decided to book a dinner at the Chef's Cafe for our 2nd night, with a great expectation from the good reviews on the net. It was loadshedding time when we arrived. We ordered small pizza as a starter, which was great. Then we quite dissapointed on the main course, lamb sosatie. It was burnt and tough..I could not finished it as I was tired of chewing the tough lamb. Or maybe it was a mutton instead of lamb? Even the apricot also got burnt, my first thought maybe abit too much of reduction sauce that caused the burnt? The electricity was back on when we'd like to order the dessert, Tiramisu..and I was not quite sure the combination of cardamon onto it. To me, the cardamon took over the taste of how the tiramisu supposed to be. The waiter who served us (sorry I forgot her name) also need a bit of briefing as she was going to take my plate when I was still busy chewing my lamb without asking me. You can actually see from my fork and knife position that I have not finish eating.. she did apologize though. And she also asked if she could take our water glasses away while the water bottle still half full. Apart from the meal, the place is beautiful, we love it, its just this first time experience wasn't our luck.

Nice staff, great food. Highly recommend the Boere Dim Sum and Pizza! Service might be a bit understaffed, but they were all over it.

The best pizza in the country ! The Ottolenghi is literally heavenly! And one of the most superior restaurant experiences ever … from the decor, to the service (Chandre), to chatting with the owners, to the setting, to the food and the wine! Cannot recommend this delicious place highly enough!

Had a great meal here. Boerewors dim sum starters where a treat and pasta was top notch. The Lei Water Ale is worth a try. Lovely setting and friendly and attentive staff.

Superb! We cannot rate African Relish highly enough. A jewel in the rustic Karoo town of Prins Albert, you'll be transported to newly conquered taste-terrority and culinary bliss. We spent three wonderful days cooking, tasting and exploring the bounty the area has to offer. We cannot wait to return. Our heartfelt thanks and congratulations at everyone at African Relish who've made our stay and experience so memorable.

Gay’s Guernsey Dairy, located at the end of the main road in Prince Albert, is a popular spot for locals to get their daily fix of fresh milk and yogurt. The dairy is home to a special herd of Guernsey cows that produce creamy goodness which can be enjoyed by visitors who stop by the little shop.
We enjoyed the cheese tasting demo very much. The yoghurt here is absolutely amazing! There's quite a few products for sale which is definitely worthwhile buying. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We definitely recommend popping in here.

Best local dairy I’ve been to in SA! the cheese 🧀 is just beyond amazing, the fresh milks and salami’s is just amazing! really if your in Prince Albert or driving threw you need to stop here for their local produce!! Also love the idea of locals making these knitted animals and being sold at the dairy for their own profits just a lovely way to give back to your community!
Hey A — Google review
It is a nice experience. The lady that did the cheese tasting knows her stuff. And you can buy all the products, what they produce on the farm at the deli.
Petrinette O — Google review
A family dairy business in Prince Albert. We were offered a cheese tasting. Such lovely service. Thank you Clive. The cheese was delicious. Especially the milder ones like the mozzarella and the Royal Mild. Lovely artisanal bits on offer like dish clothes, soaps and stuffed toys. Just beware that the milk and dairy products are unpasteurized.
Azania M — Google review
I can never visit Orince Albert without stopping at Gay's. They make the best black cherry drinking yoghurt money can buy, and their cheeses are superb! The little shop sells locally produced fare, including freshly baked sourdough bread. The staff are always friendly and very helpful. Don't visit Prince Albert without stopping off here!

Swartberg Pass

Mentioned on

Mountain pass

Scenic Drives
Swartberg Pass, a 19th-century mountain road, offers a relatively short and easy ride through the spectacular Van Rhyns Pass into Nieuwoudtville. The area is known for its seasonal bulb displays and offers accommodation at Papkuilsfontein farm. A detour to Protea Motors, Oorlogskloof valley's waterfall, and a Quiver Tree forest is a must-do.
From Prins Albert Town to Oudtshoorn. Very treacherous and steep climb. Narrow one car road. Can be done in a car but preferably in a stronger vehicle. Sights are spectacular and worth the nearly 2 hour drive. God really enjoyed creating this mountain pass.
Carrol-Anne C — Google review
Winter 2019, some snow. This was naturally an experience getting to the Pass as this is a bit 'off track' compared to regular touristic points of interest. A 4x4 is recommended if you don't want to scratch the undersides of your car. The Swartberg Pass is a mandatory visit. There are many walking tracks up there. Although keep in mind, it gets cold and windy in winter, and the road might be closed.
Stanislas T — Google review
We did it! We were blessed with a clear blue sky on a 10-Sep-25 morning, driving Northbound from Oudtshoorn. The ride was a Toyota Starlet Cross Manual with three people and all our luggage onboard. It didn't even struggle. Traffic was light, only met with four passing vehicles. The gravel road was wide enough for two cars to pass at ease. We made five stops which provided some parking spaces. I have marked the GPS below: -1st Viewpoint: -33.362456, 22.077104 -2nd Viewpoint: Skelmdraai -33.363694, 22.065356 -3rd Viewpoint: -33.358598, 22.054221 -4th Viewpoint: Die Top -33.35215, 22.04618 -5th Viewpoint: Teeberg -33.328908, 22.043043 Just be on the lookout at every turn. You will enjoy it. Stay safe! GC Singapore

Fantastic view from top. Breath taking bottom canyon. Really worth it though ot is NOT always an easy drive. I saw a cobra on the side of the road. Beware.

Very nice views, you can do it with a small car Corolla similar but it is more enjoyable if you have a SUV
Sara F — Google review
Loved the self drive...stunning fynbos and views. Close to nature and the road in good condition...loved it!!
Cornelia T — Google review
This road is a wonderful example of South Africa’s spectacular mountain passes, an inspiring engineering feat offering incredible sweeping views, hair-raising blind curves and stop drop offs. It is passable in a sedan if you drive slowly; we had no trouble at all on this gravel road in our little Suzuki Swift.
Marsha R — Google review
We actually loved and hated this pass. Apparently there's a sticker one can get that reads "I survived the Swartberg Pass!". We came into the pass from the Oudtshoorn side which leads one directly up the treacherous narrow single lane dirt (graded) road "Die Top" at over 1500m. Relief! It makes one reflect and wonder about ones life and eternity! We didn't know about this part as we'd only seen photos and videos of the other side... The really picturesque jaw-dropping side. Nobody mentioned anything about "the other side" !! Well I think it's cured us of the novelty of needing to explore passes. We will do our homework better in future for 2 wheel drives. After finally reaching Die Top, the steep decent was welcome although somewhat nerve wrecking still, until we got nearer the bottom of the pass on the Prince Albert side. It is phenomenally beautiful with majestic mountains and ragged gnarled and layered rock outcrops in many different hues of reds, oranges and browns, all around one, as one slowly winds through. One cannot hurry this wonder... Take it slow and enjoy every awesome view, at every turn and bend...📸

Lovely place to stop along the route 62! the quiche and the homemade ice tea were delicious, and the Dutch apple cake as well :) the shop offers a nice selection of pieces supporting the local economy, therefore a further reason to buy here a souvenir.

Lovely place for morning coffee and cake (I’m sure the rest of the menu is great but didn’t have a chance to try more). Penny’s welcome is warm and reflects Karoo hospitality! The small gallery of mostly local artists is lovely too - walked away with a beautiful oil landscape!!

The friendly and knowledgeable staff sets this place apart, providing detailed information on pairings and answering any questions. Visitors rave about the delicious cheese platter with gourmet meat cuts at a reasonable price, accompanied by hot roosterkoeke.
Wow, what a wonderful experience at an unassuming Boplaas wine tasting venue! We ordered a sumptuous platter and a "brandy & fudge" pairing on top of a regular tasting. Exceptional brandy flavours and yummy food to make it a really memorable visit. The host, Annerie, entertained all her guests with her wit and expertise. Highly recommended - a "must do" option when visiting Calitzdorp.

We ordered wine from Boplaas 2 days ago and they just dropped it now. Wow wow wow. They helped me with an add on to my order and it was so easy. The staff who helped me was friendly and the service was great. Thank you so much.
Dirk H — Google review
We were travelling on Route 62 and on the spur of the moment decided to pop into Boplaas to buy some of their port. Then it became a wine tasting and we really enjoyed it. On a sweltering summer day, it was lovely to relax in the cool tasting room for an hour. Friendly service and we would definitely recommend a visit here.

Nice place to visit for a tasting, their port style wine are more worth it than their still wine in my opinion. My favourite from the one we tried was the Colheita 2007

A tranquil and beautiful setting for lunch. Made a turn here on a lovely winter's day. Sipped on the delightful Rose, followed by a very yummy bobotie, veg and rice. My fellow travellers tucked into the soup and a German-style sausage. Highly recommended!

Atmosphere and position great. Best of them there. Wines are personal tastes, but for everyone something. Restaurant nicely situated under vines. They have to prepare a better dough for roosterkoek - tough and not eatible. Even the knife could not cut it
Peter Z — Google review
Good wine tasting venue. The restaurant is separate and has a very good menu.

Very beautiful and calm place between the grape yards and under them. Service was excellent from the waiter. Food did took a bit long to be served, but the wait was worth it.

We went for wine tasting, and we were had such an amazing experience. The wine pairings were well presented and amazing to taste. The food after was out of this world. Compliments to the Chef 👨‍🍳 . We really had a nice time and the atmosphere is relaxed and the view is beautiful. Thank you, Jakkalsvlei. We really had a great time.

We had a lovely experience at Jakkalsvlei absolutely worth the scenic drive out to this farm. We reserved a 1pm seating and arrived early which meant we could enjoy a tasting at the shed. I understand the shed was opened in December which is a lovely treat, you get your tasting glass as a gift for any tasting. We did not opt for a tasting but rather a bottle of their piontage rose which was served on the lake with beautiful views. At the restaurant we did various pairings which was lovely. A stand out was their MCC we ordered a bottle for the table. The hostess was friendly and set up the table for us as our friends were celebrating their anniversary this was a special touch thank you! We enjoyed the food; recommend calamari starter and lamb shank for mains. We also ordered the pork belly and fillet chicken too which was lovely. We had a lovely afternoon! Tip: The bar downstairs only offers drinks per bottle not per glass. We love the tent downstairs, great atmosphere.

We popped into Jakkalsvlei on a rainy 1 November without a booking and were welcomed so warmly by the friendly staff and a cozy kaggelvuur! The restaurant was packed, but we were happy to sit at the wine tasting bar where Riaan looked after us. He was absolutely fantastic — funny, knowledgeable, and full of great stories about the wines, the Jakkalsvlei farm, and the Mossel Bay area. He really made our wine tasting memorable and gave us such a great Jakkalsvlei experience! The tasting options are excellent, the wines are superb, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality. The drive to the farm is also beautiful. We’ll definitely be back soon! 🍷

The Old Jail Coffee House is a fascinating spot rich in history! Loved exploring old jail. Had the mini breakfast - absolutely superb. Friendly top - notch service made the visit even better!

Our kids loved walking around the old jail and asked numerous questions. The old China cups and sauces took me on a nostalgic trip to the past! The keys to the jail put me right back in 1860! Take some time out of your trip up the Garden Route and enjoy a morning/afternoon strolling around the jail.
Marlene F — Google review
Such a warm and inviting atmosphere and the breakfast is excellent! Full of history too!
Charmaine L — Google review
A great unusual first time experience having a meal at an old prison building. I'm glad we got to sit outside in a pretty garden because walking around the prison buildings was amazing but made my skin crawl just imagining and learning about the history. Lots to see other than just sitting at a table eating a meal which is great. Inside each jail cell are items for sale. There is even a jail cell with Lego, others have antiques and a variety of other items in others. The food smelled amazing coming in there. Although I didn't try the carrot cake, my family all agreed that it lived up to its reputation for being an excellent carrot cake. Personally, my toasted sandwich, wasn't very good but that was the only thing, everyone else at the table were happy with their food which was more like the breakfast options with bacon and eggs.
Elle B — Google review
This building — one of the oldest in Riversdale — was originally constructed in 1838 and later converted into the local prison in 1860. Saturday, 1 November 2025, the Ou Tronk was a vibrant hub blending history, art, and community - with Afrikaap Online Radio doing a live broadcast from the courtyard. Set under the shade of lush avo trees, it features a charming café, crafts, antiques, and locally made gifts. And of course, we couldn’t leave without tasting the restaurant’s famous carrot cake — said to be nationally (and maybe even internationally!) renowned. Let’s just say… I can personally confirm it lives up to the hype!
Renée D — Google review
Hidden gem of history found on the edge of Riversdale about 50kk from the coastal fishing village of Stilbaai The cells have been converted into small shops selling antiques including paintings. While historically the original gallows are still a grim reminder of its original use as a prison with its own death-row, dotted around the areas where prisoners could walk around, are plants in pots flowering in the sun-shine bring relief to its grim use The tea garden under the trees in a courtyard surrounded by white washed walls and it's accompanying dining area inside the old buildings, is well worth a visit. The menu is simple and fairly priced. Food was fresh, served fairly quickly by a friendly hostess. Definitely worth a second visit.

Ronnie's Sex Shop on Route 62 is a quirky and unique roadside stop that has become an iconic part of South Africa’s Route 62 experience. It's a great spot for a laugh, a photo op, and a quick break during a scenic drive along Route 62.

I have been to Ronnie’s Sex Shop 10 years ago. There is no comparison. It is very run down, no stock in the shop and NO wine. The response was that they had a busy season and have had no time to stock up. This was on 17 January. Big disappointment.
Marinda B — Google review
The recent video by French YouTuber Kino Yves documents an experience at Ronnie's Sex Shop.. Not a good one in the eyes of many South Africans. The individual behind the counter displayed a shocking lack of hospitality, treating a foreign visitor with an unprofessional and rude demeanor. While the price of R30 for a small, 200ml drink is concerning, the poor customer service is what truly stands out. Given the global reach of this video (already 28K views in 8 hours at the time of writing this), this incident could be incredibly damaging to your business's reputation and deter future tourism. I urge the management to address this behavior to ensure all visitors are treated with the kindness and respect South Africa is known for.

This stop is mandatory if travelling on Route 62. The adult milkshakes are a must.

To be honest the last time I was here was in the year 2000 when I was 13. We stayed at warmwaterberg for y2k. I remember it like it was yesterday. Dinner at Ronnies then back to the caravans, dad got Tig and Tag the sheep who my sister and I got to name the year before so pissed they were still laying asleep outside the caravan the next morning. I signed the champagne cork and hid it in a tree. Im 38 and live in New Zealand now. I really want to come back to visit S.A so I can visit. Such good memories here. If I make the trip back can I get a free beer hahaha

A visit to Ronnies Sex Shop on Route 62 is an absolute must. It's just an 18-minute drive from Barrydale, so resist the temptation to stop there first! Ronnie and his wife are incredibly entertaining and brimming with character, eager to share their fascinating stories. The food, while simple, is delicious, and the prices are the best you'll find in the area and its surroundings. The views are nothing short of breathtaking. Be sure to try their 18+ milkshakes; we indulged in the coffee and rum, as well as the Turkish delight and vodka flavors, and they were incredibly tasty. I'm definitely planning to return the next time we're in the area!

After watching and following Keno Eves, the cyclist from France on you Tube, I was disgusted on hom the "barman" treated Keno. He doesn't make eye contact, he doesn't stand up for a customer, hardly acknowledges his presence there, and worst of all...R30 for a can of cold drink!! Daylight robbery. Please review the video and decide for yourself....

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is a protected forest area in the Langeberg region, managed by Cape Nature. It offers various self-catering accommodations, but camping is the most affordable option with scenic views of mountains and an abundance of birdlife. The reserve boasts hiking and biking trails through indigenous forests where rare ghost frogs can be spotted along with over 200 species of birds.
Amazing campsite with a deck per campsite. Beautiful pool. Ablutions neat. Forest is amazing. Fantastic place to hike, run, cycle.
Catherine K — Google review
We were a group of 5 staying for the weekend. Some camped, and the others stayed in a chalet. The accommodation was neat and well equipped. The hiking trails weren't always clearly marked, but never the less, we loved the seclusion and quiet of the forest walk. I strongly recommend Grootvadersbosch for a weekend away in nature.
Salome W — Google review
We were only day visitors, but it was a mistake! We should have made a weekend of it! We were very imlressed with the staff and the facilities as well as the hiking trail we completed. We will definitely go again to walk the other trails as well and enjoy the glamping facilities. The ablution facilities were exceptionally clean and well designed. You can see the showers were designed by somebody that has camping experience!
Annette W — Google review
We only camped one night here. We wanted to ride the mountain bike trails, which we did. The trails weren't maintained, but the lady at the office said that they were planning to. The pool area is beautiful and the ablutions were very clean. I think monkeys can be a problem here. We'll definitely be back to enjoy a longer stay. When we left the staff were mowing the lawns and cleaning up the campsite.

Place is well kept. The glamping tents are spacious and clean. The pool and play area for the kids was great. Loved being here with the family.

Cape Nature at its best. One of our favourite spots in Western Cape and everything was on point in the facilities, out of the way friendly staff and then off course one of the best and most beautiful places on earth.
Pierre S — Google review
Fantastic nature breakaway - the hikes through the indigenous forest are wonderful and the birdlife great. Stayed in the glamping tents.
Hennielene B — Google review
Magical weekend spent here. There are not many campsites so it is not at all crowded and the sites are a decent size. We took a decked site which is awesome. Such a great idea, nice wind barrier which was helpful when it started raining which can be common here. The trees are great for extra shade in the heat. The cycle trail and hikes are amazing. Such a gorgeous forest, incredible trees and birdlife. There are some lovely bird hides to watch and listen to the birds. We really loved enjoying it. The ablutions are super clean and the communal pool area is really stunning. We enjoyed the pool too. The kids play area is well constructed and the kids had a ball with all the climbing gyms. Really top notch and way beyond our expectations.

Don't miss this Shop when you are interested into Afrikan masks, statues and tribal art. Harry has collected amazing objects from all over Afrika. I saw stuff from 400 to 12 000 R, but you also find souvenirs to moderate prices.
Anja S — Google review
A must see! Hardy is very knowledgeable about their collection of masks, thrones and other african artifacts. Some museums or collectors would be jealous of his collection. The prices are very fair, even the typical tourist-souvenirs are cheaper than anywhere else (even compared to streetmerchants!). Since covid they build new rooms so its not as packed/stuffed anymore. We try to visit Hardy and his amazing businesspartner Egi everytime we're in town :)

Beautiful African pieces available here, sourced from across Africa. They ship around the world, so no need to make space in your luggage. There is also a gift shop with small, more affordable goodies that make for wonderful gifts and souvenirs.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, located in Montagu and about a 3-hour drive from Cape Town, is an expansive 58,000-hectare rugged reserve nestled amidst the Anysberg and Warmwaterberg Mountains. It offers various accommodation options, with the Gondwana Family Lodge being ideal for a luxury family bush holiday. The reserve boasts unique indigenous flora and fauna, ancient rock art, and rare wildlife species.
Sanbona was stunning and offered a five star safari experience. Located in the Little Karoo about three hours from Cape Town, the expedition was first-class. The transportation provided was a must for reducing stress and arriving on-time so we could experience the evening game drive and a sunset cocktail overlooking the hippos. The food and service were outstanding, and our game driver, Marco, was superb! We saw giraffes, elephants, rhinos, lions, cheetahs, hippos, zebras, and more. The early morning game drives were made comfortable with hot water bottles, coffee, and endless snacks. The picnic lunch overlooking the mountains and star-gazing Braai were also highlights of the trip. Sanbona was the perfect Safari option if you want to skip the trip to Kruger. Note: it is recommended to bring cash in Rand for tips. 350 Rand per couple per day for your safari guide and a daily staff tip at your discretion.
Christy R — Google review
We had the most incredible time at Sanbona. It was the trip of a lifetime. Everything from the moment we arrived at the welcome lodge was absolutely perfect. Tilney Manor was so peaceful, comfortable and luxurious. The staff were incredibly warm and attentive and the service was impeccable. The food (and there was LOTS) was always delicious and varied. But nothing stands up to the incredible reserve. Our guide, Jordan, was such an expert and made our game drives truly unforgettable experiences. Every drive brought a new and wonderful experience - we saw giraffes, elephants, rhinos, lions, cheetah, baboons, zebra, and much more! The conservation work and research they're doing is amazing! Can't recommend it more highly and we desperately want to go back!

Thank you so much for this wonderful stay. I have never experienced a vacation like this before – right in the middle of nowhere, yet so perfect. From the warm welcome at the Main Gate to the refreshing towels upon arrival at the lodge, everything was flawless. The friendliness of the managers, our guide Marco who gave us unforgettable moments, and the attentiveness of all the staff such as Ricardo, Nelly, and many others made our stay truly special. Every wish was taken care of with such thoughtfulness. This is a holiday that will remain in our hearts forever.

Sanbona was the highlight of our trip! The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly, the food was incredible, and the views were outstanding whether you were out on safari, sitting by the pool, or simply sitting in your room. We were here for ~4 days and each safari ride was better than the last thanks to our fantastic guide!

A fabulous time! We stayed in Tilney manor for 3 nights. Everything was exceptional. Such a beautiful experience seeing all the wildlife, Jan was our safari guide, he has experience is knowledgeable and ever so humorous to be around! Thank you to Tilney staff for management of our rooms, the delicious meals and an all round a memory my husband and I will reflect on for a lifetime! Definitely recommend to anyone looking for an ethical safari experience and still be close to Cape Town!

Sanbona was the perfect ending to our honeymoon—peaceful, unforgettable, and absolutely magical. The team was so welcoming and friendly, we truly felt at home. They even provided halal food for us and made sure we were taken care of at every moment. Our guide Janri was amazing—professional, kind, and knowledgeable. Thanks to him, we encountered lots of wildlife, including the Big Five, and learned so much along the way. The lodge managers were just as warm and made every detail feel special. We’re leaving today, but a piece of our hearts is still at Sanbona. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a luxury, authentic safari experience.
Mohamed R — Google review
Did not realise it was another 1.5 hrs to the lodge from the entrance , my bad. However, that 1.5 hrs met with several springboks and an elephant along the way, which was so memorable. The accommodation was perfect , the best part of it was our ranger Yandry, he is so experience and took us to see the big 5s and provided so much knowledge for us to appreciate the animals. The rest of the staff were amazing as well. Irshaad who took care of us when we were dining, Monica was a great ambassador for Sanbona and a gentleman I forgot his name who met us at departure . The immaculate service eg the welcome hot towels when we came back from drives, the delicious and high quality food and beverage. It’s great value for what you pay for. Highly recommend.

The Drostdy Museum, located in Swellendam, South Africa, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. The museum consists of several historical buildings showcasing the town's past and Dutch architecture. It houses period furnishings and craftsmen’s workshops from the 18th and 19th centuries. Additionally, visitors can explore a working wheat mill on its beautiful grounds. For dining options, there are restaurants nearby such as Field and Fork and The Republic offering local craft beer and gin.
Great visit, really informative. The staff are also very helpful. Good walk between the three sites, we made a whole day out of the visit, stopping at the cafés for lunch and ice cream then continuing on to the next sites

I found this place on google maps and we decided to visit it out of curiosity. We had a very special experience there, the museum curator did for us individual excursion and it was very interesting to know about everyday life of people who lived in this town during colonial time! It was very educational and beautiful!

What a pleasant experience to visit the different exhibitions of the Drostdy Museum in Swellendam! When we arrived, we were welcomed by a very friendly lady who sold us entrance tickets and who gave us some background on the different exhibitions. We visited the old jail, the Drostdy House and the exhibition of wagons and carriages. It was clear that a lot of effort had been made to get the exhibits as complete as possible and to give a true-to-life version of Swellendam's history. Here an there it is clear that maintenance was outstanding, but overall the facilities and exhibitions left a good impression. Visitingthe museum when you visit Swellendam is a must.

Here is consisted in 3 areas apart from each other(3minutes by walk). The entrance fee is 80 rands per person. There are many interesting things(100-200 years old)in each building by its own theme. Like in smith house, you can see smith tools in 19th. It’ll take 1-2hrs depends on your style. Buildings are just fantastic when it combine with blue sky and mountain! Recommended!

We stopped at the Drostdy Museum to explore what it had to offer and found it absolutely fascinating. The old jail cells provided a sobering and thought-provoking experience, while the walk through the Ambagswerf or Trade Yard, was truly impressive and beautifully preserved. I loved every moment of it. Strolling through the Magistrate’s House and the courtroom felt like stepping back in time. If you have a passion for history, I highly recommend visiting this remarkable place.

Lovely, quaint museum located in the heart of Swellendam. It would be the perfect picnic spot and a great little walkabout. There was lots to learn about the history of Swellendam. The museum is divided into various sections and is free to the public. We went on a Sunday and enjoyed having the place to ourselves as we took our time exploring the complex.

What an amazing experience! The trail wasn’t too tough for me, but fitness levels will vary. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, and the huts are well-equipped—except for the last one, which is more basic. Be sure to stock up on supplies before entering the reserve. When you think you’ve seen it all… WHAT A PLACE. Absolutely stunning and impressive. Comparable to Cape of Good Hope but way more nature und less tourists. Totally love it. Had relatively bad weather but still insanely great. Did the 5km hike which is doable with a „basic stamina“. Paid R180 for 3 people. 100% worth it.

Lovely Nature Reserve Great to camp as generally not busy & sites private. Sites vary in size, protection from elements, shade, closeness to bathrooms etc so check carefully what would suit your camping equipment & the experience sought. Bathrooms are well serviced despite being a little old. Staff very friendly & hand soaps etc top class. Then there's the wash up area that provides dish soap, scourers, dish towels & replaced once used. Water pressure not the best if busy but water always hot. The reserve as a whole is a treasure chest for the adventure - plenty miles to bike, hike, snorkel, explore dunes,, spot animals & birds. There's tours offered, river cruises etc. There's a restaurant, pool & more and guests seem mainly international. Definitely worth a visit & staff are most welcoming & friendly.

A world class destination with well maintained amenities. The Bites beach cafe has a good selection of well priced meals with an out of this world whale sighting experience. There is a bit of a walk from the parking down to the cafe, but this is on a well paved dual track. This is accessible on an assisted wheelchair. The game viewing is authentic and unique, with loads of diversity in fauna and flora. Bring binoculars or a camera.

The Bontebok National Park is conveniently located just off the busy N2 national road, making it easily accessible by any type of vehicle. It’s a perfect stop for day visitors looking to stretch their legs during a road trip. The park offers several short hiking trails and a cycling route, along with designated fishing spots along the river. It is one of the few National Parks that allows fishing, hiking, and cycling without restrictions, so you can enjoy the activities without worry. The park also provides facilities for overnight camping as well as accommodation in chalets. For more information, visit the SANParks website.
Pierre W — Google review
Disappointed by the state of the campsite after a long time of not visiting the reserve. The sites were small and provided little or no privacy from the next site. The biggest drawback of the whole camp was the dubbeltjie and tree thorns on the ground. The ground was also exceptionally hard and a mallet is advisable. The signage for the different trails was also very misleading and no indication of what to expect - rocky/thorny/steep inclines/declines. The one shorter trail required all 4's and holding onto plants/grass to avoid slipping in one place. The ablution block on the other hand was fantastic. Modern, clean and very accessible. There's a scullery with hot water and a food prep area with 4 plate electric plates, a microwave and a kwikot water heater with permanently available boiling water on tap. There are chalets available in the campsite, including 2 mobility challenged and 4 family. There are antelope & zebra to be seen and there is a 'game viewing' route, but this is not a big game reserve. The bird life is varied and depends on seasons. If the aloes are flowering/how high the river level is/how much rain has fallen. It can be wet. It can be cold and it can be extremely hot. The water at the camp is safe to drink, but be prepared for even changes in temperature between day and night.
Liz T — Google review
Amazing cooking facilities and ablution blocks but the lack of any information on the park or trails is unfortunate. No one at reception volunteered any. There is a notice at reception of the names and distance of the walks but nothing else. There are no maps of the area or indication of the terrain or difficulty of the trail. Trails are poorly signposted. The reception is very new but all exhibits are old and tired. Faded photographs with very little information. Bontebok park has a wealth of birds but not one photograph. The camp sites (only 3 with no power) were very thorny and felt in need of maintenace The views of the river are lovely but acess to the river from camp is challenging. A lot of money appears to have been spent on decoration and little on conservation. V sad

Van Loveren Family Vineyards is a charming estate located in the Robertson Valley, offering a relaxed and family-friendly wine tasting experience. The well-furnished tasting room provides 8 different tasting options, including non-alcoholic choices for families with children. Visitors can also enjoy the lovely deli and shop for various gourmet products. The estate's Christina's Bistro adds value to the experience, while its location near other wine estates makes it convenient for wine enthusiasts.
We are visiting the Breede River Valley in Dec. It's extremely hot here. We made a booking here, though we had visited many times before. This is indeed our favorite wine farm in this area, and we will keep coming back! There are these amazing gardens, beautiful green lawns, a variety of trees. Christina restaurant is on the premises. The wine tasting area was full to the brim, a lekker bunch of patrons, a family offered us a space next to them on the couch. We however did eventually find a shady spot. We did the wine paring this time. You would need the menu to see the variety of options, there is also a kiddies tasting option. Our little yorkie was welcome. The also sell the non alcoholic variety of sparkling which I like to buy for my non drinking friends. It was Sunday and they close at 3pm. The staff although very busy and extremely hot remained engaging and full of smiles. Thank you!

What an amazing experience I’ve had here, after doing a couple of wine tastings around Cape-town ,the wine tasting experience here was really different .It was not just about the wine but knowing the story behind the wines made me feel like I’m part of the family. The whole place is a beautiful story .From the drive going there ,I learnt that all the vines fenced with red flowers belong to the winery ,you get excited on the road before you even reach the winery.

I’m not one to write a negative review, but after being blown away by Nuy Estate yesterday, the lack lustre approach to a wine tasting experience at Van Loveren left more than the taste of tannin in the mouth. Positive: We were 3 attending on a quiet Monday and each opted for a wine/food paring option. The pairings were good, the wines were mostly enjoyable and as not much of a Chardonnay fan I can highly recommend the Christina’s Chardonnay - a pleasant woodie Chardonnay. Now - the negatives: it costs nothing to be nice and make people feel welcome. A very basic greeting was followed by no clear guidelines or suggestions. We knew we wanted to do a food and wine pairing tasting - so after picking a place to sit, we were presented with a menu. No discussion, suggestions or interaction. Shortly after our wine was brought all On one black tray, placed in front of us with no clear indication what we were having till we asked in what order. No information or anything forthcoming. After another 5 minutes our small tray of food pairing arrived - no napkins. No discussion or any interaction again. When we asked for a napkin, we were presented with plastic wrapped “scented dry wipes”. Firstly - sustainability? Secondly - the smell from a scented wipe during wine tasting? Upon paying - nada, nothing until I actually sarcastically said “thank you for asking , our time here was fine”. The sarcasm was lost. P.s. no soap in ladies… This probably would have warranted a three star review, but when on extended travel through SA, and having been so surprised by a lesser known in my experience like Nuy, you’d expect much better and higher standards of customer care from an “old and established” high end “perceived” estate like Van Loveren. I hope this will assist you in inspiring your staff to be brave, free and welcoming in the future - especially during quiet winter months Even “fake enthusiasm” is better than a luke warm breeze.

So much to do, wine tasting which was very good on the deck under the trees or buy a picnic and lounge on the grass next to the river, or possibly stock up with your favorites and float down the river on the barge. Lovely way to spend a lazy day.

Great wine, lovely atmosphere. Great prices on both the wine tasting and their food. Don't know if it's always like this since we went there shortly after heavy rain- but the river was dirty and didn't smell too pleasant . But the restaurant was amazing with live music.

Springfield Wine Estate What a great dat put for wine tasting. Fantastic little dainty place out in between the vinyards. Plenty greenery and trees with fantastic views as well as the little dam right there. A great scenery for sitting peaceful and relaxing the taste buds with some refreshing wine tasting, a taste bud tantalizing experience. A good variety of wines to tast and select from. Out in the Robertson wine valley. It was also one of the few places open till late on the public holiday. Unfortunately they do not serve food which is the only negative thing we had to say but all in all a very good experience.

Fantastic, relaxed tasting on the dam at Springfield with Santie guiding us expertly through the wines. She really put all of the wines into context, shared the history and the story...we met the estate dogs and carted off a few boxes of their most delicious wines. Highly recommended 👌

I have been for a wine tasting previously and it was amazing. This is my most favourite wine in the World ❤️❤️❤️. I have recently joined their Members Club and what an incredible surprise. In addition to 6 bottles of wine, I received their Olive Oil ( in a wine bottle ❤️) with Olives and Peach Atcha sauce. I can’t wait for the next surprise box 😉👏🏼 Thank you Jenna and the Springfield Team. 💯

Scenic views and incredible wines paired with complementary olives. The wine presentation was spectacular. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Don't leave the Estate without purchasing a bottle of Thunderchild, 100% of the grapes for this blend are grown on the orphanage’s grounds and 100% of the profit is donated to the children. A compelling initiative.

The estate accommodated us for a wine cellar tour, and it was the best part of the whole day. They have wonderful wine and we bought a few bottles to take home. Wine tasting can be enjoyed on the grass with deck chairs. Tastings are generous. Their Life from stone is the most famous wine. The same family run the estate for generations.

Not to long ago, wine tasting in this valley was free. It changed and I understand this. I have been to Springfield several times in the past and I have never been disappointed. I will always recommend them as a great option. Until today. I state again, I don’t mind paying for a wine tasting but today: the wines were served, glasses plonked before us. Not a single word about the wine was said, no introduction to the farm or anything! After we have tasted the 5 wines and were almost leaving, a lady doing the tastings come to our table and asked how far we were with our tasting. Since we were done, she did not say anything . No apology for not showing up, she did not even try to make up by telling us about the farm… no effort. Although I have been there before, for 4 of our party, it were their first time visit and they will surely not bring their friends here. On a Saturday in summer, surely you need more than one person to do the tastings ? It’s a pity. Such a beautiful place and great wines. But I doubt that I will be back for a visit. Rather order online and visit some of the other farms where we had lovely tastings, like Rietvallei and Zandvliet
Marlena T — Google review
Interestingly they not part of platters, but theres wines do not disappoint! The whites are notoriously special. I would also check out their reds. The thunder rock wine is also special as they allocate proceeds to the children’s home. PS: Complimentary 🫒 olives are amazing!

Nestled along the scenic Langverwagten Road to McGregor, Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is a delightful haven for donkeys and visitors alike. This tranquil sanctuary boasts spacious, well-kept enclosures where these gentle creatures thrive under the care of passionate staff dedicated to their welfare. As you explore, you'll encounter adorable ducklings at the pond and can browse through an inviting bookstore filled with intriguing titles, including Afrikaans poetry.
The milkshake was amazingly thick and delicious. Would definitely recommend. Visiting the donkeys was fun as well, very glad that they were rescued. Please visit their website and do a virtual adoption of a donkey, it goes for a very good cause.

What a beautiful sanctuary, and so peaceful! Would definitely recommend visiting if you are in the area! They have a very quaint small cafe you can also order from. They sell sandwiches, quiche, and cake.

This is our second visit to Eseltjiesrus. The staff is dedicated and there is a tranquil and peacefull atmosphere in which the donkeys is cared for. Please visit this sanctuary if you are in the vicinity!
Riaan C — Google review
We have 3 different donkeys that we adopted. Ziggi, Dowwe Dolla and Alice. Have managed to get in 3 visits when we that way. Lots of books for sale as well as donkey memorabilia. They also sell lovely lunches.
Kaz B — Google review
Nice place to spend some time with the kids. Nice meals under the shade or inside. Many gifts used to support the sanctuary and naturally getting time to spend with the donkeys themselves where you can pet them with a guide nearby giving you an overview of everything. Very well looked after place and worth a stop.
Heinrich B — Google review
Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is easy for find on the Langverwagten Road to McGregor from Robertson and there's a slow gravel road to the parking area. The farm is expansive and it would be tricky to move from the parking to the restaurant if you are a wheelchair user. The food was good though it took a while to arrive and while she delivered good and friendly service, Brittany appeared overworked as she operated both as a waiter, cashier, and in the kitchen. They feed the rescue donkeys at 12pm and Jermaine is excellent in handling both the donkeys and entertaining guests. You can also sponsor a recue donkey and they have lots of merchandise on sale which goes toward the support of the farm. If you're feeling energetic, there's a walk as well or you could sit and enjoy the view on the farm. There's shading for those very hot summer days.

Beautiful sanctuary. This is really a haven for donkeys with a peaceful atmosphere, large, clean, well-maintained enclosures and people who are genuinely passionate about helping these intelligent, gentle animals. We also got to see the cutest flock of ducklings at their duck pond. They have a cute bookstore where we stocked up on very interesting titles, including a bunch of Afrikaans poetry books for me. The little donkey store has lovely art, toys, wine and more. The restaurant had a vegan option. I would highly recommend visiting this wonderful place and supporting their cause. They really do much needed and valuable work for these animals in the sanctuary and the community.

De Mond Nature Reserve is a stunning coastal reserve located at the mouth of the Heuningnes River in the south-western Cape coast, between Arniston and Struisbaai. It's recognized as a World Heritage Site and offers various activities such as short hikes including the 7km Stern Trail, fishing in the river, swimming at a designated area with picnic facilities, and a boardwalk leading to a lookout point with breathtaking views.
Such a beautiful spot. Good to go early to get the most out of the day. Also if you want a picnic table near the entrance. If you fine with walking, there are lots of place along the river (lowtide) and on the beach to sit with blanket. Well maintained,no music or rowdy drinkers. One can enjoy nature and swimming in the river. as well as cooling off near the front of the sea. I don't venture in too deep. Well done Cape Nature.

Tranquil, unspoilt and nature at its best. Pity the bridge still isn't fixed but walking along the estuary is wonderful and great for birders.

Beautiful nature reserve and lady at reception was very friendly and helpful. Great boardwalk around the lagoon, but sadly the bridge across the lagoon broke in the floods over a year ago and still not repaired ... so you can't actually complete the walk 🤔
Darryll T — Google review
A lovely nature reserve. We tackled the 7km walk/hike. It was easy, no high level of fitness required. The walk through the bush was great, then a descend towards the most beautiful beach. Be careful to turn towards the river when heading back as the route is not clearly marked on the beach side. Beautiful, clean, well kept and easy hike. We ended with going up to the view point. 2 hours well spent Overall a great experience for me and my family. We would do this again in a heartbeat.

Awesome nature reserve with a beautiful quiet river mouth that opens into the sea. At low tide, the water is crystal clear and a must to swim in.

Shipwreck Museum Bredasdorp

History Museums
The Shipwreck Museum Bredasdorp offers a haunting yet captivating journey through the history of over 150 ships that met their fate along the treacherous coast of Cape Agulhas. From tales of gallantry during shipwrecks to artifacts salvaged from these maritime tragedies, the museum provides a glimpse into an era when seafaring was fraught with peril and adventure.
Excellently done and well maintained museum. We enjoyed it and found the place very interesting and informative.
John T — Google review
The museum is still well kept. Friendly staff. Clean toilets. We paid R35.00 per person. Lost of cool history. Over 200 ships sank along that coastal line.
Aldo T — Google review
Incredible collection of shipwreck artefacts and beautiful displays. Portrays the magnificance of these ships, the hardship of the impact, losses, survivors, the efforts to salvage and the rich history of each ship. Helpful staff can fill you in on items and answer questions. Thank you! Well worth the visit.
Hugo P — Google review
Interesting small museum. They display small items from shipwrecks around the area. Some other interesting stuff in display as well including an old house to showcase the way of life. There are a few coaches and a fire engine at the back as well. Entry Adults R30/ Kids R15. Staff were pretty helpful. Must stop if you are passing through the area.
Rick R — Google review
Excellent experience. I learned a lot about the shipwrecks and the local history. Really was a lovey little museum and I would visit again
David P — Google review
With all the lost ships around the coastal area there is very little information in the museum with stories or background around the wrecks. Expected more info. Why make the effort of keeping a museum with some good artifacts but so little around the history.
MikeV — Google review
It is a wonderful walk (or should that be sail?) through history when shipping was more than transporting goods and a leisure trip. Back then, it was how people travelled great distances and came with its unique set of challenges. The evidence of wrecks on display illustrate the pain of several lives lost so tragically – and the long time it must have taken for their families to be told. Nevertheless, the museum would do well to have guides or voice clips at the various displays to give some context for those who may not be familiar with the maritime history of Bredasdorp. Outside, you will find a great place to relax with benches placed in the shade and sunshine to cater to your taste. There are neat and clean (though small) bathrooms on site and the lawns are well manicured. It was disappointing that the museum only accepts cash as payment. It’s worth your R30, but there’s greater potential here.
Duncan A — Google review
Excellent museum. The staff made the exhibitions come alive for my group of 13 primary kids. We really enjoyed our visit. Even the one boy who don't like visiting museums found the visit interesting and not "boring" at all.

The most beautiful scenic mountain nature reserve with well marked level walks, kloofs, waterfalls & an abundance of testing mountain hikes.
Ann P — Google review
Early morning walks at the Greyton nature reserve are magnificent! There are several trails here. We did the Hardepeerkloof trail and it took about 2 hours with stops in between to take photos and breathe in the fresh air. The views are so beautiful. I love the picturesque rolling hills and the way the sun hits the mountains. It is so peaceful, quiet, and calming. If you're doing the Hardepeerkloof trail, make sure to go clockwise from the start as some parts are very steep, and is better to climb up than risk slipping down.
Amy H — Google review
Absolutely one of the best Hikes we have ventured on (Boesmanskloof), beautiful mountain back drops, well maintained paths and spectacular scenery - the hiking trail from Greyton side is a strenuous one, but definitely worth it, lots of up hill for the first 4.5km along the jeep track with a picnic spot (breakfast rock) at around 3.8km then single track through the valley with plenty view points along the way, up to Oakes falls, which is a spectacular waterfall into a pool where you can picnic, swim and rest, the last leg of the hike up to Die Glag accommodation is steep but the views are amazing, we went end of March

Phillipskop Mountain Resort is the most beautiful place on earth within the most fynbos biodiversity area in South Africa. Who better to own a part of this area than Dr Chris Whitehouse,a botanist with his wife Anna who too is a Conservationist. They provide well appointed, very comfortable, very clean accommodation. A place to go to where you feel like not wanting to go home.

Fantastic trails to suit all levels of fitness, stunning views, interesting rock formations and a cave with rock art, what a great hike! We were lucky enough to see a couple of Klipspringers and enjoyed watching the baboons. We visited the week before they closed to day visitors (unless you book a guided tour) but would definitely return and stay.

It is beautiful there. I took spectacular photos of landscapes and plants. However I wish there were more dish cloths and toilet paper. It is required that one does not leave dirty dishes, but then enough dish cloths must be provided. One dirty-coloured dish cloth is simply not enough.
Helena O — Google review
We came only for the hiking, but the trails are in great shape and the views are great. We loved being able to see the rock art, especially! We appreciate that it is possible for people to come take the trails even if they aren’t staying in the accommodations there. The fee was quite reasonable.

Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary, located outside Stanford in the Overberg region, is a popular tourist attraction that has seen nearly 20,000 visitors. The sanctuary is known for its educational work and the well-being of its big cats. Visitors are guided through the area by knowledgeable volunteers who provide information about the sanctuary and its residents. The big cats have spacious enclosures and appear to be comfortable and well-cared for.
Visited Panthera Africa this morning with my teenage daughter and we were both blown away by this truly ethical sanctuary. Coming from experiences with wildlife facilities in Thailand where animals seemed drugged and listless, this was a complete revelation. This is what a real sanctuary looks like - no breeding, no trading, no tourist interactions with the animals. Every decision here is made with the cats' welfare as the priority. You can see and feel the difference immediately. Our guide was incredibly passionate and knowledgeable, sharing detailed information about each species and the heartbreaking but hopeful rescue stories of individual animals. The staff clearly genuinely care about these cats and it shows in everything they do. The difference in the animals was striking - these big cats were alert, active, and displaying natural behaviors. No signs of the sedation or stress we've unfortunately seen elsewhere. They live in spacious, natural enclosures where they can be themselves. My daughter learned so much about the real issues in captive big cat breeding and the importance of ethical sanctuaries. This visit opened our eyes to conservation in a meaningful way. Panthera Africa is doing vital work and deserves all the support they can get. This is how wildlife conservation should be done. If you're in the Western Cape, make the drive to Stanford - it's absolutely worth it to support an organization that truly puts the animals fiirst.
Peter J — Google review
Visiting Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary in Stanford was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Hearing the stories of lions, tigers, and leopards rescued from the lion bone trade, tiger bone medicine trade, and other cruelty brought the reality of these issues to life in a way I’ll never forget. What makes Panthera exceptional is their 100% ethical approach. The animals live in spacious, natural habitats tailored to their needs, with an enrichment enclosure to keep them stimulated — no petting, no exploitation, just genuine care. Our guide, Kate, was outstanding — knowledgeable, passionate, and happy to answer every question. The visit was educational, emotional, and truly impressive to see how the sanctuary is determined to respect the animals and give them the dignity they deserve. I highly recommend this to all ages. If you can, please visit, donate, and help them continue their incredible work.
Bianca W — Google review
What an awesome experience!! Did one of their tours a few days ago and really enjoyed it. I was a bit sceptical about the ethical aspects but it seems like a honest sanctuary and I couldn’t find any negative things about it. They’re acting in the best interest of the animals. If the animals don’t want to be seen you won’t see them. Personally I rather not see them but know that they are comfortable instead of them being in a small cage just for the sake of humans entertainment! They inform you about all the animals and their history which also helps you to understand the animal rights in (south) Africa more. So all in all a pleasant experience and a good sanctuary to support.
Everrr H — Google review
I absolutely loved this experience: it was very educational, it raised our awareness of what is actually happening out there with wild cats. I love what they stand for, they ethics and love and care for animals. Claire handled our group so well despite of so many small kids. I know I will visit again because we all thoroughly enjoyed it!
Lucie N — Google review
Panthera Big Cat Sanctuary is an absolute gem and one of the very few true ethical sanctuaries in South Africa. Their passion and dedication to the welfare of the big cats is evident in every detail. This isn’t about petting or playing with the animals and that’s exactly how it should be. Unlike many other big cat parks, Panthera is all about respecting the animals, giving them the space, care, and dignity they deserve. We had Kate as our guide, and she was fantastic her knowledge, engaging storytelling, and willingness to answer every question made the experience truly memorable. Thank you for such an incredible time, Kate. Hearing the cats’ stories and learning about the work being done here left me inspired to support their cause. For anyone visiting or travelling near the Hermanus area, this is an absolute must-visit. You’re not just enjoying a unique experience you’re contributing to an incredible mission. Please consider visiting and donating to help them continue this vital work.
Weabo B — Google review
Excellent sanctuary. Definitely worth a visit. Our guide Kate gave us extensive knowledge about the breeding trade as well as the bone trade in South Africa. She also gave us the back stories of the saved animals in the sanctuary which gave them character. Instead of just a tiger/lion etc they had names and a survival story. Definitely recommending for friends and family.
Olivia N — Google review
Absolutely amazing tour, very knowledgeable staff and insightful tour that managed to get very close to the cats.
Mark R — Google review
You need to book a tour in advance, as individual visits aren’t allowed — rightly so, in the interest of the animals’ well-being. Our guide Kate was very knowledgeable and shared a lot of information, which is exactly what you’d hope for from an educational visit. We were able to see all the resident felines and learned in depth about the wildcats, the sanctuary’s background and, on the contrary, the broader industry that exploits big cats. It was clear that everything here is truly done with the animals’ welfare in mind. A must for anyone who wants to understand the realities behind South Africa’s wildlife industry.

We went quad biking and had a blast! It was quiet so we had our own private tour. The guide ensured we were happy regularly along the way and even offered to take some videos of us on the bikes. Such fun!

Walker Bay Vineyards and Birkenhead Brewery is a unique estate in the Southern Hemisphere that produces both beer and wine. The venue offers stunning views, friendly staff, and delightful craft beers, ciders, and boutique wines made to exacting standards by passionate experts. Visitors can enjoy a variety of experiences including beer tastings, delicious meals from an excellent menu, and even cheese tasting from the Klein River cheese shop.
Walker Bay is a fantastic winery and eatery. Their wine tasting selection was superb, including the Syrah. I had Hake and Chips and it was fresh and perfect. We were a group of 5 and the atmosphere is modern and relaxing. Roaring fire, very friendly staff and such a superb place to spend 3 or 4 hrs. Highly rate this place. Will return.

A road trip is not about the destination but what you get to see and do along the way. And if you are in the area, this is someplace worth seeing and doing. Had a hearty meal and an ice cold drink and bonus, if you are travelling with dogs, they are pet friendly. But please keep them on their leash because there are often small children around.

Enjoyed our meal at Walker Bay today. Tried the 4 tapas items on their new menu. Delicious! Only took one photo as we were busy enjoying the flavours AND the beer. The Weiss and the Lazy leopard lager were great. Thanks to our server Zinathi for the local knowledge. Highly recommend.

We visited on a cold, dry and bright winter Saturday. It was our first visit and enjoyed having the Klein River cheese shop as well as the Walker Bay wines to taste and buy. The food was really good and the service was a bit stilted but no complaints. The highlight was sitting in the garden, in the sunshine and enjoying the view. A relaxing and convivial experience, we will definitely go back.

Wonderful experience at this brewery/winery on Heritage Day. Visiting from 🇨🇦 and we were treated to a beautiful location, great suggestions and explanation of the beer and wine choices. Met the manager as well. When my husband only had 5 beers instead of 6, I was offered an additional wine in its place - very nice touch. Thank you!

Excellent brewery. The beers are very good. Especially the Honey Lager and the Stout (personal opinion). The surroundings are beautiful. Very small kids play area but lots of open space. Do keep an eye on them though, a river runs through very close to the property. Dogs on leashes are allowed. Inside sitting is cosy and comfortable. Outside is lovely on a sunny day. The beer bottles are quite expensive though.

Decided to pop in for my birthday today on the 21st of October . Zanathi (hope I'm spelling it correctly) was our waiter for the day . He was super friendly , enthusiastic about his job and his presentation of the beer tasting was great ! . Food was really good and well presented and ofcourse the venue is spot on ! . Been here for the first time since 2018 and decided to come back and exactly the same ! Consistency at its finest ! Thanks Zanathi for making my experience and birthday special !

Lovely new menu. Staff were very accommodating and adjusted the meals according to dietary needs. Clear attention to detail and I will be happy to return. The cheesecake was a bit dense and could be improved. The fresh Kabeljou was delicious!

Nestled in the breathtaking Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Creation Wines is a sleek winery that offers stunning mountain vistas and an unforgettable tasting experience. The estate's rich history intertwines with the natural beauty of South Africa, showcasing its commitment to sustainability while promoting the region’s exceptional wines. Visitors can indulge in meticulously crafted cuisine paired with award-winning wines, including a standout six-course wine-and-food pairing that caters to all dietary preferences.
Not the cheapest restaurant by far, but the food, wines and service quality is of a very high standard and that sets the prices. We enjoyed the wine pairing meals. What an excellent tastebud experience. Well prepared portions of food both in taste and texture accompanied by good quality Creation wines. On top of that the superb staff showed good skills in explaining the food as well as the wines. Included are a few photographs of the food To us, it was well worth the effort and cost. A very highly rated experience

Visited this place on our first day in South Africa, landed in Cape Town and rented a car to Hermanus. But this place was the first stop, even before checkin-in. There are several wine estates on the way there but this one has probably the most extensive (and delicious) food menu. The steak didn’t disappoint, it was marvellous. The ramen has a local twist probably - don’t expect the Japanese style, but I liked it. Wines and views are magnificent. 4.5 Stars – Excellent: Delicious, memorable, and expertly crafted. High-quality ingredients and exceptional flavor. Service is friendly but had to follow up a few times on some orders

If you are in this area in South Africa, you will need to check out Creation. Food is good. They have gluten free options too. Host and servers were very friendly and the view is spectacular.

Wonderful place with beautiful artwork, clean restrooms, friendly waiters, and very good food. My daughter has difficulty with food outside our country, and they were very accommodating by preparing scrambled eggs for her upon our request. Thank you so much for your attention and kindness.

We were very excited to come here, but did not feel that the hype surrounding this wine estate was warranted. Doing a wine tasting in a restaurant where people are ordering food and eating, was not the atmosphere we expected. Siya was well informed but disappeared not to be seen again and someone else took over the tasting. Very strange.... wine was also not above average.

It was an amazing experience to try their wines. We decided to share a snack platter and later a main course (the ostrich) and together with the wine it was just perfect ! I would definitely recommend Creation Wines and would visit again.

Extraordinary experience! The food and the wine are superb and the staff is excellent! Jenean was wonderful at explaining all wines and the pairings she suggested were incredible.

Went here for lunch and wine pairing with my friend. Snazzy served us and was an absolute delight. Very informative, friendly and created a wonderful atmosphere. The food was yummy and we left with a bottle of delicious red port.
