Mountain pass
Outdoor Activities
Sani Pass is a famous mountain pass that winds its way through the Drakensberg Mountains, connecting Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal to Mokhotlong in Lesotho. This challenging 4x4 route, constructed around 1950, features steep slopes and sheer edges, making it a thrilling adventure for experienced off-road drivers. The pass is also home to the Highest Pub in Africa, perched at an elevation of 2874m and offering breathtaking views.
A really amazing road and getting to the pass is an adventure in itself. Great views allow for done amazing pictures. I didn't think visiting a road would be so impressive
Yasmin W — Google review
Definitely something you should do! The view and the majestic mountains are awesome. A 4x4 is a must, so if you don't have one, rather don't attempt it.
M H — Google review
The climb felt like a slow reveal, mountains shouldering closer, air turning crisp, and that hush you only get when the world drops away behind you. We kept stopping just to take it in; clouds slid over the ridges like they had their own plans, and every turn opened a wider piece of sky. Somewhere along the way our small talk fell away too—just the sound of gravel, a few delighted laughs, and a lot of “wow, look at that.” At the top we didn’t rush. There’s a particular quiet up there that settles in your chest—wind on your face, scenery stacked in layers, and a sense that you’ve stepped onto the edge of something bigger. The way back down felt like a rewind of all the best moments, only slower, like your eyes were trying to memorize the route. It wasn’t just a road for us; it was one of those days that leaves you both full and calm at the same time.
Dylan L — Google review
Some friends and I hiked up Sani pass not so long ago, the views were breathtaking. Hiking up it wasn’t so bad, it took us 2 hours but I must say the last part was a killer. Another thing to note is that when you arrive on the top at the Lesotho border you will need to pay a fee of R100 per person. Either way it was definitely worth it! Also bring a warm jacket, it gets extremely cold at the top!
Janet C — Google review
My bucket list journey from Underberg up to Africa's highest pub in Lesotho! I cannot begin to describe the experience.
Mark H — Google review
We did the Sani Pass hike, an organised hike from the border to the Lesotho border and to the pub. This was called the sunflower hike to raise funds for cancer.i wish all hikers would join this hike .it's done once a year.I enjoyed this hike .I saw snow for the first time on the mountain. It was a winter wonderland for me.
Nilosh P — Google review
Great views. The sani pass is definitely worth visiting. Beautiful landscape.
Nicole W — Google review
The Sani Pass is considered one of the most dangerous mountain roads in South Africa, and we wanted to take on this challenge as self-drivers. We conquered this indescribably beautiful mountain pass in our Toyota 4x4. The drive is quite adventurous in places and weather-dependent, but it's tremendous fun, and the magnificent panoramic views are indescribably beautiful. The ascent and descent can certainly be done as a day trip, although it should be noted that upon entering Lesotho, fees must be paid to the not-so-friendly border guards at the border checkpoint. The South African checkpoint was completely problem-free, and the guards there were very friendly. A visit to Africa's highest bar is, of course, a must. The tour can also be arranged with local tour operators, as it can be a bit difficult for inexperienced off-road drivers. All in all, a wonderful adventure trip to the remote but beautiful mountain kingdom of Lesotho.

What an amazing stop for breakfast on our way back from the drakensburg. Love this place. Will definitely be back!
Roxane G — Google review
Quite a nice little place to enjoy some breakfast with reasonable prices.

Honesty shop. Pick what you want and leave the money for it. Not really much to do here anymore. Got some animals running around so a little ok if you want to stop for the kids sake.
Kuben P — Google review
Having visited a few years ago, I was disappointed at the empty shelves & fridges. Lovely farm stall though.
Dudley S — Google review
We just came over for a quick breakfast on our way to the coast and ended up staying for an hour. The breakfast was just delicious - especially the bread and jam. We couldn't resist to buy a warm bread - just out the oven - for the way and and a few other delicacies from the farm shop. Also the hospitality of the owner and her lovely daughters is simply overwhelming. Very much recommended!!
Lewin K — Google review
Quaint and clean hidden jem. Lovely little honesty shop where you can buy jams, biscuits, baked goods, bread etc. Farm animals well looked after and friendly. Food was good. Service is quite slow though but only a handful of hardworking ladies working there. So understandable.
Shannah S — Google review
The food and ginger beer were delicious! The staff was pleasant to talk. Atmosphere is lovely, felt like home. The small shop was full of delights. Must go to!
Blaž V — Google review
4 Stars for the farm stall, good selection and high quality, just a bit expensive. I have been coming here for over 10 years and would normally rate 4 stars however my last experience was a disaster. (On a side note, I believe there are new owners and this could be "teething" issues) There is a new café and I recently went there (I was with a party of 5). We ordered some tea, coffee and sandwiches - Service was terrible and slow (They also got the orders wrong) toast was rock hard and dry, the cheese was akin to processed rubbish and the 'ham' was disgusting and tasted like gelatine. I could not stomach eating it after tasting a small bit of the ham. I politely mentioned this to owner who gave me a rather hostile reply. I hope the (new) owners manage to fix this and improve quality and service, it's a lovely area with many fond memories.

History Museums
For a small country museum the Himeville Museum is outstanding. Congratulations to the curator and those committed and interested folk who support the museum. It is well set out with displays representing all facets of life through the past. Of particular interest was the "Muthi Garden" - a clever and informative exhibit. Well worth a visit! (Bring cash for a donation)

Very nice museum. There where so much to see with such a rich history of what happened there. The detail they put into displays is so good and each display tells its own story. Will defnilty take my kids there one-day when they are old enough to appreciate the history of this lovely museum.
Marelize P — Google review
Very informative. Some lovely preserved artifacts. Well worth a visit! Nice piece of history! No entrance fee but donation welcome.
Time T — Google review
A must for History enthusiasts. Enjoyed the visit. Only spoil, the use of plastic dolls on exhibit.
K. M — Google review
Our visit to this museum was not planned in advance, it was just a spur-of-the-moment decision and we are very happy we made the trip! Unassuming from the outside, we did not expect to see such a well-curated and well-stocked collection of artefacts as we walked in. The museum was clean, tidy and organised; you are sort-of guided along by yourself with signs and descriptions giving you important titbits as you move along. The most moving exhibition had to have been the war memorabilia room. Poems on the walls, war soundtracks playing in the background and a good balance between informative and emotive. Another little fact we found interesting was that the museum is built in an old laager; the last laager (or fort) to be built in South Africa.

Google Maps can get you lost sometimes because of loss of internet connection, but the turn off to the Wildsky Lodge is just south of the Bulwer town itself. Look out for their signs. The accommodation is very nicely rural. The flight was absolutely awesome with the take-off and landing area, like a manicured park - no rocks, trees or steep slopes down. And yet one could climb spectacularly and come back to land exactly where you take off, after being able to spend as long as you like gliding around. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Clive E — Google review
WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!! Highly recommend!!! On our honeymoon and went to Hans and Ria for paragliding, what a team they were, from stopping there we felt welcomed and could chat for hours. Ria spent so much time teaching us about the wildlife and nature around Bulwer and Hans was incredible with his flight, taking you through step by step, explaining everything and teaching you everything in the sky, felt incredibly safe with him in the air, this is a must do for anyone in the area!! My new wife and I really enjoyed every moment of this experience, thanks Hans and Ria, youll forever be a special part of our honeymoon!!
Jacques B — Google review
Hans and Ria are amazing people, when ever I go there, I feel like I have always been there. The area for flying is spectacular. Well worth taking the time and enjoying the time there, even if you are not a pilot, the place is amazing for a disconnect from work and all your other stresses.
Strictly S — Google review
Hans is a world class instructor, the progression he takes you through while you complete your license is tailored. I have always felt safe and confident on every flight because of the wealth of experience that the Wild Sky instructors have. Bulwer is a beautiful place to learn and get into paragliding and will always welcome you with a friendly face a the club.
Stuart J — Google review
A really interesting flying site with charismatic accommodation. Bring your own food as there is a spacious kitchen to prepare food. If you want to have someone else do that the Nip Inn is about 1km down the road and they have a good menu of SA food. Hans was a great guide and very knowledgeable about the mountain, local weather, flora and fauna. A really nice place to hang out for paragliding.
Mark T — Google review
Hansie is the best in business! Smoothest ever flight and landing!! No matter how restless you are Ria and Hansie will make you feel comfortable!! 5 stars will surely come back for another one :)
Ankush G — Google review
It was many-a moon ago... but I learnt under Hans, I only returned to paragliding after 20 years. I wish I had spent more time learning from Hans - I still wish I could visit South Africa and make the most of what Bulwer has to offer.
Neil R — Google review
What a way to find your mojo in life again. Hans and Ria are highly qualified and experienced pilots who are patient and talented instructors. Thank you for involving me in the marvelous sport of paragliding.

Monique W — Google review
JAN 2022 - An interesting mess Beautiful, lush, ethereal BUT abandoned and dilapidated The short road up to the entrance is marshy and overgrown so you'll probably have to park near the main road. The abandoned toilets, offices and seating areas are falling apart. Paths are obviously now not maintained and are very slippery after rain. And horseflies aplenty. So keep moving or start swiping.
Jed D — Google review
The infrastructure seems to have been abandoned in the last year, but there is still enough boardwalk for excellent birding. We saw bush blackcap at the entrance, and the normal forest specials in the deeper trees. Some of the wood is missing, and there are lots of goats, and it may not be completely safe, however it was fine when we were there.
Krista O — Google review
The forest is awesome , Ideal for birding but that is it. No infrastructure, many moons ago there must have been something now only the empty abandoned building left. I won't recommend going on your own but definitely worth a visit if you are into birding.
Rudolf W — Google review
This should not be promoted as a place to visit, you should have a guide we were told after the fact. It is deserted and feels unsafe. Sad coz we were looking forward to seeing the yellow wood trees.

The reserve features expansive grasslands, rocky hills, and diverse walking trails with panoramic views. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hikes to waterfalls, trout fishing, and exploring a rock art museum. The area is suitable for visitors of all ages and offers picnic spots and a variety of wildlife to observe.
Wow. A little drive to get here but we so enjoyed a day out hiking in this reserve. There are three options for hikes. We chose the waterfall. It was a very easy hike and took us 30 minutes to get there. Little elevation and easily attainable for kids. Loved swimming in the river and the views are utterly breathtaking. It costs R45 per person to hike. Take water and a costume.
Tes L — Google review
Stunning Bushman Paintings at Kamberg. Loved my stay at Molweni.
Vimal M — Google review
Very pleasant reserve with well maintained trails. The staff member at the reception was friendly and explained all the day hikes available. Although we didn’t stay there, the chalets look like they are in decent condition. Note there are two daily guided hikes up to the San rock art at Game Pass Shelter: 9am and 11am. Beware of kids throwing stones at vehicles in Thendele Village just before the park entrance.
Joshua W — Google review
Came for a family weekend getaway with children and found the accommodation cosy, neat and clean. Having the opportunity to fly fish and hike in such a beautiful area is a wonderful experience.

Roman Baths - Kamberg Nataure Reserve If you in this area i highly recommend you do the hike to the Roman Baths, approximately 14k hike (there and back) easy to moderate. Look out for the arrows as they can be easily missed. I suggest you try org a map from the office. Leave early so you can spend the day at the baths. Well worth it. You can jump into plunge pools and soak up the amazing backdrop of mountain's. Loved it.
Lee R — Google review
Beautiful day in the Kamberg Nature Reserve. Our park officer, was so amazing and friendly. Went out of her way to make sure got there without getting our vehicle stuck.... in mud situation. Easy hike for the young and old, lovely waterfalls and rock pools and not to mention the clean crisp water, so so refreshing 😀
Kaajal P — Google review
Beautiful area, track a bit overgrown, markings weren't good so download walk beforehand but still worth the visit. We walked to the Roman Baths.
Wendy M — Google review
Did a day trip from Durbs and got there within 2.5hrs. We did the waterfall hike - 4kms round trip, with my 60+ mum and 7 yo nephew. So it’s quite manageable for folk of all ages. The drive into kamberg is testing … the road outside Nottingham is littered with potholes. Then there’s the 18km gravel road in which can take up to 30mins. We did it in a front wheel drive sedan but would recommend a vehicle with higher clearance and all wheel drive; see pic with the water-logged areas which can trap a vehicle. The hike itself was stunning especially the waterfall and pools. The path was recently cleared which makes for easy walking. We spotted a rinkhals on the way. The manager of the lodge was such a lovely lady. We’ll be back.

Caroline is the Owner and host at Stormy Hills. She is so welcoming and friendly. The environment is extremely comfortable and there is accommodation available for overnight stays. This place is like a day retreat due to the serene surroundings. Her horses are well trained and she caters for riders of different abilities. When you're up in the hills, the views are amazing and a breath of fresh air to the soul. A MUST VISIT..

Caroline is a fantastic host with many interesting anecdotes. The cottage is rustic but spacious including everything you need. The many animals, including pigs, horses, dogs, chickens and a duck provide an endless source of entertainment. The walk to the top of the hill provides panoramic views of the countryside. And it's pet-friendly.
Sean C — Google review
I had an absolute lovely time riding Stormy, he’s such a good (big) boy. Having snacks along the way was quite a challenge but like I said he’s a big boy. Caroline was such a sweetheart and the absolute friendliest person and guide I have ever met, I will definitely recommend Stormy Hill as a nice day adventure with a loved one and I will most definitely visit them again!
Chantone N — Google review
Caroline gave a fantastic guided horse ride to my kid sister and her best friend. They both thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I felt comfortable leaving them in her care. You can see that Caroline really cares for her horses and the pack of rescue dogs that accompanied the girls on the ride are super cute. Great experience if you find yourself in the Midlands.
Carl K — Google review
If ever you wish to ride a horse but have any doubts whatsoever, even if you've never seen the horse upclose just give Caroline a ring. Her welcoming and friendly approach will put you at ease... even over the phone. When you meet her for the first time you'll feel like you're seeing your old lost friend. She is friendly yet professional and ensures that safety comes first. She has various well trained horses ranging from small to big for big boys/girls, making it possible to accommodate bigger sizes. On your first ride, her guidance and assistance will make you feel like you've been riding for ages. The scenic trail is... you'll understand my lost of words when you there. Worth traveling to this place for peace, tranquility, friendly company and super fun. Be prepared to be amazed... Had such a lovely day and already looking forward to go back.

So yesterday we went to Stormyhill horses trails🐎🐴. Such a beautiful gem in Boston kzn👌. Most beautiful farm and Caroline the lady that owns the farm was so amazing. She's Covid friendly as she only takes on group of people at a time. You can also take a small snack and have a picnic. We never rid horses before Caroline was so patient with us she thought us whatever we needed to know before we went on the trail🙏. She individual explain to each of us. She's so kind and she has such a beautiful soul❤️. She's always laughing and smiling😊. She didn't just take us on a walk around the farm, She took us on the most amazing trail passing little streams, a tree forest and hills we even saw a jackel🐕. The horse stormy, hurricane, sandman, zabbie, bubbles so majestic🐎. I must say sandman is definitely the attention seeker of them all🐴😎. Thank you Caroline we learnt so much from you and we felt safe the whole trail🙏.. We had so much of fun. We will definitely be back to say in your stunning cottages ☺️😁.

I don't understand why more people aren't beating a path to this place!! Wind chimes, clothes, bags, furniture, musical instruments, home decor, incense, all this and more at some of the most affordable prices on the Midlands meander!! You need to get there soon!!
David H — Google review
I would have put a zero star if I could! I bought a discounted item at their furniture shop and the sales team didn’t tell me the tray was damaged. They didn’t remove the price tag from the tray when I bought on purpose so I couldn’t see it was damaged by the light exposure. I contacted them by email right after I noticed as I was already back home and I live quite far away. I asked for a refund or a discount but they haven’t answered yet after 5 days. I can’t use this as it looks bad with the mark of the price tag due to light exposure or something. See pictures attached. Very disappointed by this experience ! I won’t go back there.

A quaint curio store that houses an assortment of trinkets, toys and interesting goods. Worth a stop if you are in the area. You might just find something that you were always looking for or never knew you were looking for.

An item I wanted to buy rang up on the till at R100 more than the marked price. The lady phoned another lady to come and sort it out. She arrived from another shop in the centre and was extremely rude and abrupt. She also very shortly and rudely told the lady to take the prices off all the other items on the floor until she printed correct prices. I understand price increases but she should check the store prices if she is in charge. Very very rude!!!!!!!!!!

What an exciting experience. You can watch the artisans make the delectable chocolates. Some unusual and interesting flavors available.A huge variety of flavors in the fudge as well. The ice cream was delicious and my 9 year old loved the experience. The view from the deck is absolutely stunning.A definite stop to rest, relax and try some chocolate. The staff is so friendly and helpful.

The Belgian Waffle was good, the ice cream let it down a little. That said, the chocolate covered strawberries, although expensive are exceptional. We went back the next day for more. I do think that plain the Belgian chocolate is best. The other stuff is decent too.

Love this little gem!!! What a wonderful and cute experience to share with a friend or even with your partner. We also loved that you get to mould and take home everything that you don't finish. The staff were very friendly and the toppings and chocolate was dreamy!!!. Definitely worth a try
Manika N — Google review
Such a cozy little spot in the Midlands! Did the chocolate dipping with my boyfriend and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they use QUALITY chocolate. You get to choose between white and milk chocolate for your dipping then they bring out a bunch of items you can choose to dip! Prices are calculated by weight so you can really go wild. If you have any left over chocolate you can also have it moulded. They have a bunch of other hand crafted chocolates that you can buy (also have some cute things for gifts) I didnt try the chocolate shot thing but will definitely come again to do it! Highly recommend for all ages.

was such a fun and memorable experience! The staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. It was quite busy, but the atmosphere was lively and well-managed. The chocolate dipping was the highlight—delicious and so much fun. A must-visit!

We met the owner, Neil, wonderful relaxed atmosphere. He has just moved into new premises with a beautiful outside deck. We highly recommend a visit in you are in the area.

The moment I stepped through the door, I was greeted by the rich, indulgent scent of chocolate. I loved it. The people inside were just as lovely as the aroma: welcoming, kind, and clearly proud of what they do. Chocolate Heaven lives up to its name. The chocolate is crafted right next door, in the building beside the shop. I settled in with a coffee and took in the peaceful view over the small dam at The Junction, the centre where it’s all located. It’s the kind of place you remember. I’ll definitely be back — whether it’s to treat my beautiful woman to something special, or to grab a voucher for a friend who needs a birthday present.

This is an absolutely beautiful place. Super relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. There were 2 lakes with ducks. The sun was out and the birds were singing, they have beer on tap and gin which I found quite wonderful. Drinks are beautifully presented and garnished and taste out of this world. They have a variety of locally brewed beers which is fantastic as well as gin, there are also bottles of this you can buy. Food is also available. The outdoor seating creates such a vibrant and relaxing atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend this place for beer and gin lovers.

This Brewery has to be on your bucket list when visiting the Midlands. Such a gorgeous setting and the pub is so unique. Do a beer and gin tasting and then decide what you want to get because they do have so many options. I had the gin and ginger and the blueberry gin and they were both delightful. Service was friendly and professional. Atmosphere is relaxed. There is a merch shop selling craft beer and clothing / keepsakes. Would highly recommend.

Nice atmosphere with a deck and umbrellas and seating outside. Beer and gin tasting available. My husband loves their craft beer range. He says they even have season craft beers. I didn't drink when we were there but I still enjoyed the place and the service.

This is a must see and visit location for the old world charm of a brewery/pub with a cosy fire roaring in the background as you indulge in a craft beer or gin. Alan our bartender was amazing. Take a drive down to the lake on the property, you will thank me later.

Nestled in the shady grounds of the elegant Rawdons Hotel in the heart of the Midlands Meander, you’ll find a thriving independent brewery which has long been delighting locals and visitors with a range of naturally brewed ales and lagers. Unfortunately it was a quick stop for a Pie-Eyed Possum Pilsner (crisp, dry pilsner highlighted by the noble saag hops) but this great venue never disappoints. A quint and comfortable setting on hotel grounds are absolutely serene. The pub has an authentic English pub feel & the taproom deck in the afternoon sunshine is very relaxing. Will definitely be back to tuck into the various beers.

We had a good experience doing beer tasting. The beer menu explaining all of the different type of beers was really funny and intelligent and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately when we visited the bar they didn't have coffee or the beer that we wanted because they were waiting for delivery, which is understandable. Overall this is a really beautiful area.

The friendliest people in the most interesting wine cellar I have ever been. Just take the Hidcote turnoff off the N3 left and right and you find this gem. They have a massive selection of wine, interesting spirrits and craft beers. You can also have a food platter by the fireplace or outside under the trees. I never drive past, treat yourself!

Yesterday we visited The Wine Cellar in Rosetta - what a wonderful experience it turned out to be! The Cellar itself is incredibly well stocked with an amazing selection of wines at very good prices whilst the owners give very good advice on choice. After making out take home selection we selected a bottle for lunch with was a meat & cheese platter served under the trees. Highly recommended!

Unmatched selection of fine wines, unique wines, and personally selected everyday wines, presented by very knowledgeable first-hand experience, in a very friendly and accommodating setting. We just drove an hour out of our way, for the third time, and we left with more than we wanted to, very excited at the prospect of many evenings' anticipated wine experiences. What's not to love?

Extremely disappointed with the Gel overlay which I had done last night 27th. The overlay was sticky to the touch. When I went back the therapist advised I must come back to have re done. I duly went back at 7.30. On the 2nd attempt same result therapist tried to convince me that it must dry. I requested her to remove the the whole lot as I was extremely disappointed and angry but didn't show it. I requested my money back. I was told she would be in contact with the manager who's phone was on voice-mail. I returned on our departing morning 28th. And asked for my refund the manager advised me she had to contact her regional manager and get back to me. I had to contact Izelle to try and resolve thevissue! Only to be advised the manager is at the doctor. Please could someone resolve this scenario. REGARDS ANTOINETTE BELL It's the 29th I gad to call again this morning and still no manager response!

This was a surprise gift which did not disappoint. The Staff were welcoming, well presented and gave us one of the best Aromatherapy massages we have had. Neither of us wanted the Pedicure part of our package and were offered a foot exfoliation instead which was also good. Our one constructive suggestion, and the reason for our 4 Star rating, is that the gowns could do with replacing/upgrading although this does not deter us from recommending this Spa.

Nestled in the enchanting KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Fordoun Hotel & Spa is a luxurious retreat that beautifully marries history with modern elegance. Once a dairy farm dating back to the 1800s, this stunning property has been thoughtfully transformed into an exquisite hotel featuring charming rooms, lush gardens, and inviting walkways. The spa is particularly special as it occupies what was once a large dairy barn, offering unique treatments in a serene setting.
We went there for a birthday lunch with the family. The service was wonderful. The menu selection was fantastic and the food was delicious. It was a special birthday and definitely worth going to. They have a light menu as well for people just wanting a casual lunch. Lively surroundings. Quiet and peaceful.

Fordoun Hotel should definitely be rated lower than 5 stars. The rooms are very dark inside and definitely needs better lighting. There is no bottle water provided. Breakfast is average. service is very slow for breakfast and dinner. We stayed twice in the last year and it was most disappointing. stayed in many other venues in the Midlands; for the price we paid, there is a lot better out there.

Our high expectations were handsomely exceeded. Decor sophisticated yet relaxing, vibrant colours without being garish. Essence of good taste. Wide range of recreational facilities (including an extensive spa set-up), excellent food (new young chef with some great ideas), outstanding service. Over many years of living and traveling overseas we've had countless interfaces with the hospitality industry, and Fordoun rates among the very best in terms of how we were treated. Efficiently run with the overriding factor its customer-focused staff and management. (Special mention goes to Jules Minton who treated us as if we were the only guests there.) A place steeped in history with a remarkable transition from eminent dairy farm to world class country hotel. Guaranteed to bring down your blood pressure and heart rate - the natural way!

It's such a wonderful relaxing environment, so it's not the first time I've misplaced items here 🫠🫣 and items always found / returned to me. Such a wonderful atmosphere, friendly and hard working staff and the food is amazing 👏🏼 Will keep returning! Thank you for always making our stay so memorable 🌹

Your menu was out of the top draw... both dinner and breakfast were sumptuous, beautifully presented and delicious! Your entire staff are warm, friendly and professional making the experience relaxing and comfortable at all times. The spa treatments were more than I expected and exactly what I wanted my mother to feel like by the end of it all... calm, relaxed, rejuvenated, spoilt and recharged for another year! Thank you Fordoun !!!!

Nestled in the Midlands, Piggly Wiggly Coffee Shop is a charming country village with around 30 outlets, including a candle-dipping factory and a chocolate shop. The coffee shop offers a warm farmhouse-style ambiance and friendly service. Visitors rave about the fresh and delicious food, as well as the refreshing drinks like the Power Punch. We enjoyed a lovely lunch here.Good and friendly service and excellent coffee also with an almond milk option.

Went for lunch at this establishment and my wife and i ordered Herb encrusted pork chop which tasted like a plain fried pork with no flavor,it was super dry, she asked for some of my feta to add to give some taste, the mash did not have any flavor as well and Needed salt just to give some flavor. I ordered the Snoked bacon and avo with feta tramezenni, this had flavor from the avo and feta, the Smoked bacon was just a small piece of bacon cut into tiny pieces of which had no Smoke or bacon because it was cut almost into what I thought was grated flavorless bacon. The waitress and staff were not friendly at all and looked like we were bothering them. I really thought the Piggly Wiggly I saw online would make a statement with their friendly staff and food that would blow us away but alas this is a sorely disappointing experience. I spent more than R450 just on this two meals and a Wimpy breakfast would have been more flavourful and worthwhile. I think if I went back I would just have coffee and leave but doubt I ever will.

I had the battered fish and vegetables. This was a blend dish.No flavor and the fish was not fresh. I asked the waitress for some chilli or peri peri and was given Tobasco. This was complementary. I was told to pay additional costs for chilli or peri peri. The restaurant spends some money for the American product at a premium price. I raised it with the manager and he just did not bother even about the fish quality. I will bypass them in the future.

What can a person say that hasn't already been said about this fantastic place and it's amazing food. A real gem of a restaurant on the Midlands Meander (30mins from Pietermaritzburg). It is in my opinion one of the nicest places to take your family and friends to during the holidays or on a weekend for a lovely meal. After you have had a delightful meal you can visit many wonderful shops and boutiques for the odd ornament, clothing or jewelry item, work of art, handmade furniture and many other accessories. The outdoor environment is clean, peaceful and not to mention very beautiful. I highly recommend the Piggly Wiggly Coffee Shop and the cluster of other shops to visit on your next trip to the Meander. Do not forget to pop in at the Chocolate Heaven for a sweet delight.

We went for coffee and unfortunately had a few disappointing parts to our dining experience. We got a red cappuccino, a gourmet milk shake, a milkshake, a smoothie and a normal cappuccino. My small milkshake was R45 then came in just a drinking glass! My partner got a small gourmet milkshake that ended up being R55 when we were told R45 when the 500ml one was R65 which then also came in just a drinking glass, such a disappointing size then they took an extra 10 minutes to bring out the red cappuccino because they forgot it off the order. Very disappointing trip.

A warm smile and crackling log fire greeted us, including the dog, on a cold summer afternoon. The food was tasty and the portions were more than enough. I was delighted they had a gluten-free option for my toasted sandwich. The menu even has items for dogs so Miley, our SPCA rescue, was treated to some dog biscuits with peanut butter. The coffee was just what the doctor ordered after a long weekend of moving and travelling. Thank you for the great service!

Nelson Mandela Capture Site

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Nelson Mandela Capture Site is a significant cultural and historical exhibition located at the spot where Nelson Mandela was arrested in August 1962 for his anti-Apartheid activism. The site features a striking steel sculpture made up of 50 columns that form a portrait of Mandela when viewed from the right angle. A visitor center and temporary exhibits are currently available, with plans for a permanent museum underway. This landmark serves as a powerful reminder of Mandela's struggle against apartheid and his enduring legacy.
What a great experience. The approach is the best part: you walk a gentle path and those metal columns start as a scatter of lines, then suddenly line up into Madiba’s face. We stopped, backed up, walked forward again, just to watch it resolve a second time. The setting is quiet and open, so you get a minute to take it in without feeling rushed. Inside, the exhibition adds the detail you need—letters, photos, and timelines that make the moment on the road feel bigger than a plaque on a map. We grabbed a coffee afterward and sat looking back at the sculpture while people took turns for photos. Simple visit, strong impact, and one of those places you leave talking a little softer on the way to the car.
Bradley B — Google review
A very small attraction. The museum shows the history of Nelson Mandelas journey, you can see similar experience at the Aparthied museum in Johannesburg, which is so much bigger, however the outside sculpture is quite moving if you can see the portrait, not everyone can. Unfortunately the staff are not firendly or welcoming which is sad. Great for people that love history and want to understand the SA political journey to freedom. If you happen to be in the area, visit it.
Jetsetter W — Google review
The Mandela Capture Site is a powerful tribute, visited with the family and were truly moved by the iconic sculpture of Nelson Mandela. The museum may be small, but the experience is rich with history and heart.
Mike A — Google review
It was informative albeit a short trip. Loved hearing the original audios from key events in the struggle movement. You may pay for just visiting the sculpture or include a visit inside the museum. Loved the sculpture, very creative work from the artist. I do wish they would more attractions to the place. Maybe something to make it more appealing to little children.
Bonolo S — Google review
The sculpture is so creative and beautiful. You can see Mandela’s face from a specific angle. We didn’t go inside the museum as we went to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, I hear this is a smaller version of that.
Nyelex — Google review
Definitely worth the visit to hear and see history unfold how South Africa fought for all men to be equal. Nice coffee shop. Freedom walk Definitely walk to the end for a surprise 😮
Annette S — Google review
Great stop with staff who really add value. At the entrance we got a quick, thoughtful intro to the art piece and the best way to approach it so the portrait “appears” just right. Inside, the museum team answered questions simply and recommended a short loop that matched our time. They even flagged a coffee spot with a view of the sculpture so we could sit and take it in. Friendly, informed, and not pushy—perfect.
David N — Google review
The place was nice. For a former history student, it was somewhat something we had learnt, it’s just that you are now looking it through a glass and it’s summarised. I liked the videos on the walls and the car on the entrance. The statue was a bit far from the museum. It was a good exercise. I wish the museum glass was in an upright position and we don’t have to bend to see the words cause it gets tiring.

Terbodore Coffee Roasters is a coffee shop located in Curry's Post, Howick. It is decorated with beautiful animals, has great food and service, and sells coffee beans and other products. It is a great place to visit if you are looking for a unique experience.
It's absolutely lovely. The whole experience was just great. You HAVE TO go to the small shop inside and see the coffees they make in house (many bigger stores also have them in stock). Food was super fresh and actually came very quickly. The whole farm setting is so tranquil. Certainly a stop if you love coffee and/or some nice food.

We had an excellent breakfast and coffee and good service from the serving team. Menu is small, but great if you want a reasonable priced meal. It's important to note that this facility seems to have been run under new management for a while now and there is no roastery. The buildings and tables are also in need of some repair and a bit run down.

Waterfalls
Howick Falls, also known as KwaNogqaza, is a breathtaking natural waterfall in South Africa with a drop of over 90 meters. The falls cascade into a restless pool, creating a spectacular sight that attracts tourists from far and wide. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the falls and the gorge by taking the Gorge Walk, which offers unforgettable experiences as the Umgeni River plunges over dolerite cliffs.
On my way to Durban on Thursday, the 28th, I decided to make a quick stop at Howick Falls - and I’m so glad I did! The falls are absolutely breathtaking, with the powerful drop creating a stunning view that makes you pause and just take it all in. It’s a peaceful spot with a touch of raw natural beauty, and the viewing area makes it easy to get great photos. Even though my visit was short, it left a lasting impression. I’d definitely recommend anyone traveling to Durban to make a little detour and experience Howick Falls for themselves. It’s one of those places that reminds you just how beautiful South Africa really is. 🌿💦

awsome waterfalls. we got to experience it after major rainfall so falls were flowing beautifully. Seem to be fixing up the area aswell and building proper shelters for the people selling there goods. I was expecting a long walk from the parking but you park about 100m from the viewing point of the falls definitely worth a visit
Andrew K — Google review
It's OK. Nicer falls by Shongweni. My heart was in my throat for the people doing laundry at the top of the falls. However, there is a splendid array of beaded, stone, metal and cloth souvenirs to view. Decent prices, just negotiate aggressively 😅.
Zenzele S — Google review
Howick Falls is a truly beautiful natural wonder, and on a good day, the view of the waterfall and gorge is beautiful. The sheer power of the water and the height of the falls are impressive to witness, and it's clear that nature has created something special here. However, the experience around the falls is unfortunately hampered by the general state of the viewing area. There is a noticeable amount of litter, which really detracts from the natural beauty of the place. It's a shame to see such a magnificent site not being properly maintained. While the waterfall itself is a five-star attraction, the surrounding environment brings the overall rating down. This spot has so much potential, and it would be a truly incredible destination if the cleanliness and general upkeep were improved. It's worth a visit just for the falls, but be prepared to look past the less-than-ideal conditions. Entrance is free of charge. Toilets are R2 per for use.
Monique B — Google review
Well worth a visit. The falls are spectacular. Parking is easy and access to lookout is a short easy walk. The water tumbles into a deep gorge adding to the interest of the scene.
P G — Google review
We parked up, walked a minute or two, and the view just dropped open—big sheet of water straight into the gorge. It’s louder than I expected. I leaned on the railing, took a couple of photos, then put the phone away and just watched the spray drift across and disappear. You can feel a tiny mist on your face if the wind turns your way. We hung around longer than planned. Grabbed a cold drink from a nearby stall, found a bit of shade, and kept pointing out small things—swallows skimming the water, a rainbow in the spray for a few seconds, that sort of thing. Nothing fancy, no rush. Just a good stop that leaves you quiet for a bit on the walk back.
Nicolas R — Google review
The waterfall was great. Full too actually which was nice. Love the cute little lines where you can do the lock and key thingy. There's an uncle who sings there too, my friend loved that
Gugulethu M — Google review
Good quick stop, especially after rain when the falls are pumping. The main viewpoint is right off the road, so you don’t need hiking gear. Stalls nearby sell snacks/souvenirs; we found them friendly, not pushy. Downsides: parking can be a bit chaotic on busy weekends, and mist on the railings means keep phones secured. Ten to twenty minutes is perfect. Pair it with the Capture Site or Midlands Meander and you’ve got a tidy half-day.

This is our go-to “I need some peace” spot in Pietermaritzburg. Huge old trees, open lawns, and those little water sections where you can just sit and listen to birds for a bit. It’s clean, quiet, and you don’t feel rushed. We’ve taken a blanket, some takeaway coffee, and just chilled there for an hour on a Sunday and it honestly helps. It’s not a high-energy place, so if you’re expecting playgrounds and rides for kids, that’s not the vibe. This is more “walk slowly, take in nature, breathe properly.” Good for older parents/grandparents too because most of the paths are flat and not stressful.

This place has been my favorite since my primary school days since it offered untempered nature experience with the addition of convenience and safety. It is a perfect place for those seeking natural forest ambience with safety. I just love this place, It offers a load of fresh air and temperature regardless of weather, a very nice feeling you have to feel atleast twice a year.. the trail although short, is a perfect fit for solo, duo or family outing activity, couoled with the safety and peace it brings with it. The place is seldom full, and even when it is full, the ambience is just peaceful and everyone seems to get the memo and just be peaceful. I can say the sounds of birds, flowing waters and wind blowing over the trees does a role to further soothen the environment's ambience and harmony, though one has to take bote that along the fences or near them especially at South and east, you may fall victim of traffic noise but gojng north near the trail/hike area, it is significantly reduced to none and relaxation is assured, but I am not discouraging the places near the fence as they are sometimes a better spot for picnic especially for big events, inquire with park managers for a spot! *One can alternatively use Alexandra park for events or anything which supports loud music or activities, as that one is better suited for such and no conservatives are disturbed or shook!* My experience there has been for many years spanning from young ages to present time and have thus got the grasp of what usually works and does not, and for such places its better to come with the intent to enjoy amd not cause harm such as littering, damaging of inventory and loitering. Loads of events which support and appreciate plaves like that botanical conservatory such as Happy Earth which is given a day or more in celebration of earth and what it offers and how people can help conserve what it offers. I hope you enjoy this place as much as I do, or even more!

Located in the historical former Supreme Court building in Pietermaritzburg, the Tatham Art Gallery has evolved since its establishment in 1903. Initially focused on Victorian and early 20th-century British and French art, including pieces by renowned artists like Degas, Picasso, and Matisse, it now emphasizes a diverse collection of works by KwaZulu-Natal artists.
FREE ENTREE 😂 Its very well kept, neat and has that amazing vintage feeling to it. The art on display is lovely and fairly concise. They have two stories with a fairly decent range. The coffee shop is the selling point and it has an absolutely lovely balcony view. Perfect for meetings, lunch or even a date!

Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg is a cultural gem and one of South Africa’s major art museums. It has a welcoming atmosphere, diverse exhibitions, and historic charm. The gallery is praised for its eclectic collection, from European classics like Picasso and Degas to vibrant contemporary works by regional artists. The gallery offers a rich mix of styles and cultures. Its historic setting is one for the books. Housed in a former law court building, the architecture adds depth to the experience, with spacious rooms and unique exhibition layouts. Although closed for a while, Cafe Tatham promises to make a grand reopening sometime soon. It is known for the cozy spot that it offered where one coukd relax and reflect on the art, while being served well-priced meals and coffee. The gallery occasionally hosts concerts, including those by renowned pianist Christopher Duigan, adding a musical layer to the artistic ambiance; as well as sip n paint events. Local talent is celebrated by the gallery where it features exhibitions from local schools and artists, bridging the colonial past with South Africa’s evolving creative identity. Whether you're an art enthusiast or just seeking a peaceful escape, the Tatham offers a refreshing and thought-provoking experience.

The place is top notch, it was my first time visiting the place and always wanted to and the time I saw inside I was so thrilled and puzzled by the art on the walls and the structure of the building from inside. We were there for the event that was taking place there for models which made the place even more appealing👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥😋
Dboi-Era — Google review
Still one of the nicest surprises in PMB. The building’s beautiful, and the gallery itself is actually well curated — proper South African art, not just random prints on a wall. It feels looked after. The staff are friendly and will point out what’s worth seeing if you don’t want to walk room to room reading every plaque. It’s also a nice “grown-up” outing that doesn’t cost you the whole day. You can pop in for under an hour, then grab coffee or lunch nearby. It’s the kind of place you take visiting family so they stop saying “there’s nothing to do here.”

What a privilege to have such a glorious temple of art in such a small city! I was really impressed by both the collection and variety of art, and the clean and efficient way in which the gallery is managed. This gallery is really an asset for Umgungundlovu.

Quiet rooms, thoughtful curation, and a chance to slow your breathing. We didn’t know we needed it until we were in it. Pair with a coffee on the square and watch the city slip by.
Donald S — Google review
A good, but small, collection of local art, supplemented by some minor works by major artists of the 20th and late 19th centuries. Nice feel. Some art quite eclectic, some potentially disturbing for children, but generally interesting. Very nice restaurant / coffee bar. Small shop with interesting local art, supporting local artists. A nice place to spend a few hours. Parking a bit limited, but generally available.

The KwaZulu-Natal Museum, housed in a historic building dating back to 1905, is a top national museum in South Africa. It offers an array of natural and cultural history exhibits, including a T-Rex skeleton and a replica Victorian street. The museum showcases impressive displays of insects, mammals, amphibians, birds, and molluscs. It's an ideal destination for families seeking adventure and exploration.
I'll never get tired of this place! The staff are so warm and friendly. They've added a lot of new experiences such as a VR center and some great new exhibits. I've also found a lot of braille around the museum which I think is great.

The most beautiful museum I’ve seen in KZN. Spotless, Clean , Quiet & very well maintained. Entrance was R20 , Donations welcome 🙂 Worth the visit. On street parking in front of the museum !

Genuinely good for kids and adults. They’ve got natural history, cultural history, fossils, taxidermy, those “what lived here long before us” displays — and it’s presented in a way that’s easy to understand, not overly academic. My favourite part is that it’s actually clean and maintained, which you can’t say for every small museum. If you’ve got children who get bored easily, this is a win. You can do it in about 60–90 minutes, and afterwards they’ve seen something real, not just sat on a phone. Really good rainy-day plan.

Visited the museum when attending a Summit for Women in STEM, took a scroll around the museum and it was amazing to see historical figures, animals and some monuments! the staff was amazing, friendly and kind. Not to mention the rest-rooms, they were clean and tidy

We went for the Halloween Night at the Museum event. It was absolutely brilliant! Secure parking, safe walkways and so much fun. There was a fright area upstairs, with actors. It was so well done and the actors were fantastic! I definitely screamed a few times. We had a 6 year old with us and it wasn’t too scary for her. There was food and drinks available and the museum staff were all very helpful. The snake show was also great and very entertaining, with the chance to hold some snakes afterwards. The actual museum is awesome and very well maintained! I will be back just for another look around as there was so much on display!

Growing up in Pietermaritzburg, we had many school outings to the museum, and I was always fond of it as a child. I wanted to show my own children the museum now, but I did not have much expectation as a lot of PMB has degraded since my youth and I thought I was going to be disappointed but was pleasantly surprised. It has actually improved with more diverse sections representing South Africa's natural and cultural history. The exhibits are clean and nicely displayed within their environment, and information is easy to read. There is just so much to get through that I would advise you to schedule a lot of time here, or if you local make a few visits and take it in sections so you can really take in all the info. My kids loved the insects with their interactive displays, and my favorite section is still Victorian PMB, but there are so many new sections to explore and learn about, very informative. The entrance fee is also very affordable.

Last time I was here I was with my niece and my sister - and I did go again and I enjoyed it so much - the staff were cool and very friendly... I love that when you enter a room the sound effects starts to play at first it was scary but I love it. Also there were kids when I was there - it's great to see children come to the museum and learn. I will add Photos of my favorite highlights.

Nature & Wildlife Tours
The Karkloof Canopy Tour offers guided zip lining tours through the picturesque Karkloof Forest Reserve, providing breathtaking views of a waterfall and the valley. Tours are available from 08:00 to 15:00, departing every 30 minutes and lasting between two to four hours. Priced at R650 per person, this activity is perfect for nature enthusiasts seeking an aerial exploration of the forest.
I spent the day with the Karkloof Canopy tour team today and it was an amazing day. The team is wonderful, we were a group of 12 and we were all well taken care of. Around a middle point, we have been served cookies and juice on a plateform. At the end, they served us a good lunch remembering our adventure on their patio. I would recommand to have some zipline experience before, since this is in the canopy forest, this is somewhat demanding.

A great adventure. The staff is amazing, I was alone so it was basically a private adventure, I had tons of fun. Their views while you zip line were stunning, the beautiful canopy so full and green. Perfect for first timers or regulars.

Took my Grandson(7) for some adrenaline activation. I just arrived around 12:00, no booking. The next trip was 14:00. We decided to wait but you will appreciate that a 7 year old doesn't really have patience. He played on the jungle gym and then we had some toasted sandwiches from the restaurant. Really inexpensive I must say but very tasty. 3 other people who had booked for 14:00 were there waiting. They offered to take us on an unscheduled trip at about 12:30. What a wonderful experience. The guides were really great. I think there were 12 different zip lines from the top to the bottom. It took around 2 hours to get through all 12. Some long some short but definitely an unforgettable experience. Oh yes my grandson was first in line and agrees.

Great day out if you love indigenous forest and the birds that go with it. Canopy tour doesn't offer many birding opportunities but the forest is spectacular. Trails from the cafe garden at R80/person (self-guided) are brilliant for birding.... lots of specials. Could spend all day there. Tour guides are very good at what they do on the ziplines, and reception staff are endlessly patient and helpful. Will keep going back

What an amazing adventure for a team building. We had 37 employees attend the canopy tour of which only 3 had done it before, all 37 did the tour and absolutely loved it.Hats off to all the staff as they were brilliant all the way from the first zip to the last one.Even with a large crowd they were very professional and it was a no mess no fuss experience. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an experience for a team building or just on your own.Well done Khai and your team. From all of us here at Bidvest McCarthy Toyota Pietermaritzburg.

Amazing experience, did my 8th and target was sub 8hrs. Target achieved. Thanks comrades but I think it was 1km further. I kept my average pace and met all my targets, yet 1km extra popped up, had to run the last 5km at 4:40 to make up for it. Nonetheless was amazing. Thanks

Tala Private Game Reserve

Country-style lodge set on a game reserve offering a restaurant/bar, an outdoor pool & game drives.
I’ve been there three times this year. Met the new owners who were very helpful in getting a few of us out of a water patch on the 4x4 route. Always well maintained and a peaceful place for a weekend drive.
Fatima K — Google review
Went birding there for the day. Nobody to take my payment at the gate even though it was opening time. No map available either! The 4x4 roads are a little bit under maintained. Off camber and slippery in places. I would recommend 2 vehicles supporting eachother, or avoid 4x4 roads unless you have confirmation from the staff that the roads are dry and/or maintained That said, we got a good selection of birds so it was a worthwhile day out

We went as day visitors again and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Will keep going back. The game drive was amazing we saw Rhino, Zebra, huge lizards, bokke. I would just suggest that they put more road signs as we got lost 3 times,😂. Picnic area was the best. Had a braai, there is a lovely pool and play area. The toilets are neat and clean and staff are very helpful. Thank you so much once again. Highly recommend.

The rooms need attention but the bed was comfortable, clean and warm. The food was outstanding and the service was friendly. The bird life and game was good and kept us busy. The raptor centre is well worth a visit. All in all it was an extremely pleasant stay.

I had the pleasure of popping in for a short day visit and was so impressed! Saw more game in a single drive than I did the whole weekend at another reserve up the north coast. Had lunch at Leadwood Manor - Wow! What a little gem so close by in the most beautiful and tranquil setting. Food was delicious too! Will definitely be back to stay over and try out some of the activities they offer.

I've been coming to Tala for years now, stayed over at the Leadwood cottage for a night and wow what a gorgeous experience! I was blown away by the sheer size and luxury of the room, a big shout out to the lodge manager who went out of his way to get me some anti allergy tabs(as I was suffering from severe allergies that day)...the breakfast included was amazing, although I will state that those mini mutton sausages need to come with a warning as they have quite the hot bite in being spicy!! Overall, well done to the new owners as I am definitely going to be recommending Tala!!
Tish P — Google review
We had a day visit. It's a real Safari experience. Rhinos, Giraffe, boks and a variety of other animals to see. I do recommend a larger vehicle for your travel. Pool, swings, bird watching, clean toilets, etc Be brave to explore... You won't be disappointed .
Navin M — Google review
The overall experience of staying inside the game reserve was not bad at all. We would give it 3/5 stars. However, BEWARE OF THE REFUND PROCESS. WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FOR 3 MONTHS NOW! We had a very frustrating experience with Tala. We booked accommodation but cancelled after receiving no response to our emails about whether children were allowed. Later, we were told kids are allowed and were asked to rebook, with a promise that our initial payment would be refunded. We ended up paying twice. Since then, we’ve been sent in circles — Tala referred us to Marriott, then to Dream Resorts, both of whom said they’re no longer associated with Tala. We were later told the refund was sent back to Tala, yet we still haven’t received it. We left on 28 August and are still waiting for any clear response or refund. Very disappointing communication and accountability.

Had a great experience at the Raptor Center! They are hard at work building more enclosures for their birds and it’s looking like a great new spot for them! Was not able to see the flight show or feeding but would have loved that. We got a very informative tour and was very nice to see these birds up close! I believe the majority are rescued and they are working on breeding to help with population numbers as well! Awesome place!

What an incredible experience at the African Raptor Centre! Their new location is absolutely stunning, and it’s clear to see just how much dedication and passion the team has poured into creating such a special place. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed not just by the staff’s warmth but also by the impressive presence of some of Africa’s most iconic birds of prey. The bird show is an absolute must-see — it’s both thrilling and educational, giving you the chance to witness these magnificent raptors in flight while learning fascinating facts about their behaviour and conservation. Another highlight is the vulture feeding, an unforgettable experience that brings you face-to-face with these often misunderstood giants of the sky. Watching them feed while hearing about their vital role in the ecosystem really leaves you with a newfound appreciation.

So when it comes to sanctuary’s this place is just stunning! Their cages are so beautiful and you can see they go through effort to give the birds the best. The birds and the faculty are excellent. TAKE A HAT and a bottle of water if you’re going in summer and they don’t take cards so you can only pay with cash or eft.
Eloni O — Google review
Was awesome to see the amount of effort that has been put into them settling into their new premises! The birds are all happy and healthy- even some of the vultures sitting on eggs! Can't wait for the eagle enclosures to be complete. Keep up the hard work!

This place is so lovely, so educational, clean and very well looked after animals. We all make an impact on our surroundings, and it's so important to know where nature needs our help to recover or be saved from urban expansion. Always take something warm for the birds of prey show as it generally has a chilly wind, no matter the weather.

Oh what a place! My cousin and I arrived early in the morning to avoid crowds, and that helped a lot! There’s everything for the family.. Stalls and pony rides for kids. It does get packed after lunch, but it’s worth every penny. The staff is helpful if you’re unsure of some things. Oh also, there’s a rail museum just up the hill by the parking, don’t miss it. It’s quite interesting to learn about where it all started. Loved the registry where they made us leave a note. You have to see it!

This place does not have many options for Halaal meals. The location is a few minutes out of Durban. A very well worth it trip especially if you have kids. There are many stalls to keep you busy and fed before during and after the train ride. I suggest book before you get there. The train is more than 100 years old and the 45 minute trip each way is very enjoyable, including a small tunnel. The parking is decent with guards there. The cost per adult ticket is R200. Well worth it in my view.

Food Stalls, animal rescue shelter, goods, toys, clothes and many other household items are sold at the train station. Has historical information on the trains and the train station. Kids enjoyed it. You can order snacks on the train. Awesome views from the train ride. Good for a Saturday, day visit with the kids. Kids got to interact with a ball python and rescued owls that were handicapped. Good experience for the older folk who were previously not allowed in first class. This was our children's first time on a train. They did have fun.

My partner and I went on a train ride during December (It was Christmas themed) so Santa was on the train. Pros There are some stalls before you could board your train. Staff is helpful Ticket prices are reasonable Ample parking Cons The ride wasn't very exciting despite it being Christmas themed. The destination didn't have anything special to do or see. Toilets aren't grand.

Chillaxed day out! A trip back in time seeing the steam engines in operation. Loved the miniature train tracks that reflect years of hard work and dedication as reflected in the details. The museum is a treasure trove of everything railway... so much history packed into a 45-minute or so tour, made even more special by a passionate and knowledgeable tour guide. A day well-spent!

What an epic family adventure! The sights, the sounds and the smell make for an authentic steam train experience Booking seats on the website was a little confusing at first and the site was quite slow, but these are steam trains, so a pinch of salt will do well here. In the end it was all well worth the effort. The drivers of the steam engine were happy to let the kids climb onto the footplate for a quick photo and even shovel a bit of coal into the firebox. The journey let's you see the beautiful area around Hillcrest, way above the highway. Passing farms in the hillside, with gives you that rustic vibe that Steamers are all about. The kids were ecstatic afterwards and couldn't stop talking about it, it made the end of our week away spectacular 🤩

The train ride was fantastic! We had a lot of fun! The market was a let down, not a lot of food options, food we did end up getting really wasn't good. The coffee stall was amazing and friendly. For the most part the other people by the stalls were quite rude and dismissive. The museum was great! Great to see the history involved!
Jennifer I — Google review
Our trip made a nice family outing from Durban. Took a wrong ramp before Inchanga but made a U-turn, so suggest you check the routes. There is plenty of parking as soon as you enter on a hill and also closer down with car guards. However, found it a tight squeeze to angle car out for an exit after parking down there - cars were close behind. If you're looking for Halaal food, there's slim pickings. We only found one vendor in the morning. The first morning train is nice because it's relatively quiet and lots of opportunity for good photos but food vendors are still setting up so it is hard to find food ready. Toilets were accessible and decent enough. There is a toilet on the train (did not try that) and a serving bar with snacks and drinks which we purchased from in the first coach. Step ladder leads up to the train to get in as it is a bit high. However, when we stopped at Botha's Hill there were none, so some elderly were concerned how they would get back on and stayed in the train. The views were lovely but the three seater side seemed to have better views most of the time. There are two tunnels which were fun going through. It was an amazing experience for people going on the train for the first time. In the beginning, we were not sure where to board but figured it out. Two-seaters are a squeeze if you are on the bigger side though. Sitting next to the window, we were fortunate to have a little side table to put drinks and the windows are big. Sometimes, soot and condensation got us when close to the window but it was part of the experience and there are blinds/windows to close if need be. Overall, it was a peaceful and scenic experience that took us back in time with plenty of memorable photos and videos. Only wish we could have gone into the museum with the train models... it was closed and people were looking through the windows. Everyone was friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home. There were pony rides as well and more stalls after the train ride. The ride was long enough for us to be satisfied. Definitely recommend!!!

This is a great place the market is pretty small but I guess it can grow. The atmosphere and location is great although its a distance drive to the market but the root has great views. We arrived and had plenty of time to look around the shop, crocodiles, restaurant, crocodiles, held a VERY big python (didn't realise just hold cold it would feel!), MORE crocodiles, and then the big drive through the park. It was BUMPY!! Which is quite a lot of fun for the kids! You get VERY close to the animals (gnu, kudu, giraffe, impala, warthog, zebra). The driver stopped and answered ALL the questions from our daughter. She impressed me with the number! But more impressive was the driver's answers! And, as in all of my reviews, would I go again? Yes. This time with a camera that was capable of self levelling and MUCH better zoom! Though, actually, not much zoom was needed! EDIT: Forgot to mention, the restaurant had a FANTASTIC view of "The Thousand Hills" (I didn't count them) and the food was excellent! Everywhere was clean and tidy. All the people working there were helpful and pleasant.

Phezulu Safari Park was the perfect introduction to South Africa for my fiancée. I am from Durban, so I am used to this sort of thing, but seeing it through her eyes made it feel new again. The park was clean, well-kept, and the views were absolutely beautiful. What really made the experience special was our guide, Sazi. He knew his stuff inside and out, and his passion for the animals really came through. You could tell the animals were healthy and well looked after, which made the whole experience even better. It was a brilliant intro to safari life and it has definitely sparked a new obsession with these incredible animals. Thank you to the team at Phezulu for a great time.
