The reserve is home to the Big 5, providing opportunities for close encounters with elephants, rhinos, leopards, lions, and buffaloes.
We visited Ndaka Lodge which I believe is the only lodge that allows kids of all ages and what a Great family resort it is. Food was outstanding. The service from all staff from the time we got there till we left was amazing. We also managed to get a massage at the spa which has beautiful views overlooking a dam. Special thanks to Fana and Angus for making our first safari experience with our 1 year old a memorable one. Will definitely be back !

Beautiful Big 5 game reserve. Excellent sightings. Stayed at The Springbok Lodge and had a fantastic weekend. We went on 4 game drives and saw either cheetah or lions on every drive. Highly recommend this game reserve.

We stayed in a Private Lodge within the Reserve. It is not a self drive Reserve.

Im happy that this is a game preserve. The animals are in their own habitat and can behave as such. The preserve carries out meaningful projects to keep the animals healthy and protect them. I won't include rhino pics as another way to protect them.

Ladysmith Town Hall is a must-visit when in the area, offering a rich historical experience. The building is steeped in history and offers insights into Ladysmith town and the surrounding battlefields. The museum within the hall showcases a wealth of fascinating artifacts and information about the area's past. It's an affordable attraction suitable for both adults and children, making it a worthwhile visit for anyone interested in delving into local history.
Wide open n enjoyable to shop..
Thulare L — Google review
A small museum that packs a punch about the Ladysmith Siege and some context around the Anglo-Boer conflict. Some of the information jumps a bit from the previous display making it a bit confusing to follow. Signage in Afrikaans and English. Spent about 90 minutes reading and viewing all the displays.
Karin S — Google review
This museum houses so much history about Ladysmith town and the battle fields around the area. If you are in and around town, you can visit the museum for as little as R14 for adults and R5.50 for children and pensioners.
Brian M — Google review
I spent the morning in Ladysmith. With nothing to do but wait for the missus's car to be ready, I decided to visit the Siege Museum. How very interesting, and it was just R9 for pensioners. There are so many stories being told in the displays, but my favourite was about the three Long Tom field guns the Boers used. Apparently, one of them was damaged and they had to cut the end off the barrel, so shortening it. It still worked, so they sent it to the siege of Mafikeng, where it was named 'Die Jood'.
Paul B — Google review
Decent museum with a lot of interesting pieces. Good for adults and kids alike. Worth the visit
Stewart R — Google review
Decided to visit Ladysmith as we love historical places. Never again. Could not get close to the town hall / museum as there were big crowds of people (perhaps grants were being paid today?)....but no social distancing, very few masks being worn and no parking at all.
DJ J — Google review
Still kept in a good condition and a must visit. Great to read about the history of battles and pictures of all the battles available. Locals will warn you outside in the street to hide your valuables for pick-pocketers.
Lourens E — Google review
Lots of history, text and loads more actual items and relics from the Boer and Anglo wars. however, old run down museum. takes about 1 hour to walk through and skimming bits of text of history without reading everything.

Winterton Museum

Museum
Specialty Museums
Winterton Museum is a fascinating place to visit, showcasing a variety of historical artifacts and local history. The museum features an interesting collection, including a caravan with an exceptional story behind it. Despite being underfunded and run on donations, the museum offers a great opportunity to learn about the history of the Midlands without any entrance fee. Visitors can explore items found in and around farms in the area, making it a wonderful gem for those interested in quaint country museums.
Cute local museum, going back in history and time.
Michiel W — Google review
Very informative museum. It could use some maintenance and upkeep with the displays. Having hiked Spioenkop and then seeing the history in the museum the next day was amazing. It is free to enter so it is a great place for those who are at every budget.
Abi H — Google review
Easily accessible and well laid out. We showed ourselves around which was fine. If planning on visiting the Battlefields, it's a good idea to precede that with a museum visit.
Shingirai C — Google review
They removed the camper and the huts. Limited to see. Was still worth our while to stop and see the rest of the museum
F&R G — Google review
This place is quite interesting, I learnt that the group of Ben Viljoen's men had a baboon as a mascot🤣 it is well kept considering it's run on donations. Well worth adding onto your itinerary if you're looking for things to do around Winterton
Nicole J — Google review
Interesting museum with lots of worthwhile things to see. The caravan and the story around it is exceptionally interesting, and well worth the visit in itself. Sadly, the premise and collection seems to be woefully underfunded.
Aron C — Google review
Small museum with some interesting Boer war information. More specifically the beer war in the area of Winterton and Spionkop. The highlight for us was the first caravan that had been built by John Weston and his history.

Spioenkop Battlefield

Sights & Landmarks
Battlefields
Spioenkop Battlefield is a historic site that witnessed a significant and tragic battle between the British and the Boers in the 1900s. The location offers stunning views from the top, with monuments that vividly depict the ferocity and futility of the encounter. Visitors are advised to come prepared with cash, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, camp chairs, and water for a two-hour hike around the area.
The drive there is kinda hectic, you start wondering if Google is taking you to the right place. (note there is a R40 entrance fee pp) But wow, quite intense when you get there. Worth the drive to learn a bit more of our history and sadly the lives lost.. Definitely had an impact on us.
Magi R — Google review
Big warning... The road there and up the mountain is rough, so be prepared and have a high car. Other than that, all I can begin this review is with the word 'wow'. Learning about the true side of South African history is an eye opener. The hike was good and maintained, given the evident low budget. The bathrooms are very clean. The view was just stunning. I wish this site was given more awareness, as this is definitely a gem with visiting. You will spend a few hours there and it is advised to bring water, snacks and a good pair of shoes. Despite the very rough a dodge path up by car, it was definitely worthwhile. Cost(cash only): R40 adult R20 pensioner
Abi H — Google review
Very educational battlesight of the battle of spieoenkop translated in a few languages to accomodate all. Various graves marking fallen soldiers and semi preserved trenches. Makes for interesting reading and worth a visit! Not far from bergville and very close to the N3, its worth a detour and if you jave time to spare or just want to take a break and take in some history.
Cj J — Google review
Very well kept area, clean and beautiful. To go back to you roots is very important so please visit places such as these as much as you can to honor and also learn.
Henriët J — Google review
The young lady at the gate was very friendly , welcoming and very helpful . She explained a bit about the trail her directions were clear. We had a good hike from point A till the end. Beautiful view . If you want to visit please ensure you have cash and you're wearing comfortable shoes, sunscreen is a must , camp chairs and water a necessity after the 2 hours walk around .
Primrose C — Google review
Bad maintained for such a historic site
Ronnie — Google review
Great experience, just the road thorwards the site isn't suited for lower vehicles. Remember to take cash for entrance at spioenkop
Lourens K — Google review
R35 to enter cash only, dirt road more for SUV, 4x4, bakkies or cars with higher ground clearance. Not to say a normal car will not get you there, just slower. Forth the trip up and worth the walk around the battlefield.

Spioenkop Nature Reserve

Mentioned on

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Spioenkop Nature Reserve is a hidden gem that offers an incredible escape into nature. Nestled beneath the majestic Spioenkop mountain, this reserve features stunning views of the surrounding thorn savannah and tranquil waters, with the Drakensberg Mountains providing a breathtaking backdrop, especially when dusted with snow in winter.
What an amazing place to go camping. The ablution facilities were absolutely spotless, the views magnificent, the water in the dam, super clean and the animals were a sight to behold. I'd recommend anyone to go camping here. If it's peace and tranquility you're looking for, then this is the perfect place to escape to. It's inexpensive to set up camp and stay a few nights. It's worth every cent, getting out of the city and far from the madding crowds.
Riaz M — Google review
The reserve is beautiful, and there is plenty of wildlife around. Main attraction is the camping and boating on the dam. The ablutions could be better maintained but are serviceable and clean with toilet paper replaced daily, and there is hot water for showers. The campsites are mostly clean, but the grass is a little long in areas. It's worth taking something to clear your site, just in case. Garbage was collected daily, and the honorary officers drive through the camps fairly often, which was nice to see. The electrical points could be in better condition. Some are missing their weather covers but do work. The water is listed as drinkable, but I would take your own. On a whole, Spieonkop dam is a pleasurable experience.
Lachlan M — Google review
Best people and nature reserve for camping. Will go again
Leon B — Google review
Great...quiet, relaxing.
Natasha G — Google review
One of the best camping experience we had in a long time. Stuff is great and very friendly. Toilets and shower areas is very clean will definitely recommend this camp site to everyone... see y'all soon.
Jean S — Google review
Beware the road isn't labeled. It's a long off road up a mountain. Breathing taking, it's an adventure. When you start fearing you can't see anything keep driving. At the top of the gate entrance is R35pp and you given a map. The most breath taking views. Adventure Awaits!!!
Fatima G — Google review
I had a lovely experience at Spioenkop Nature Reserve. The dam is lovely for fishing. There are also wild game such as giraffe, kudu and wildebeest. Ablution facilities were also clean. The roads are not tarred and some parts can be quite tricky without a 4x4 vehicle but if you just going to the dam there is no need for a 4x4 vehicle.
Yusuf P — Google review
Fantastic place for a wild getaway. Campsites are surrounded by wildebeest, zebra, impala, and all manor of wildlife. Ablutions are functional and clean, plenty hot water. Park roads are better suited to suv/bakkies

This was great, very worth while doing, mother and daughter ran the outing, we did two scoots down the hill, was super fun trying to keep up. The scooters are really good, very forgiving and very easy to ride and have fun with.
John H — Google review
We had a quick 3-day getaway to the Drakensberg hoping to catch some snow—sadly, no luck there—but the kids had an absolute blast, and the views were just breathtaking! Just when we thought we couldn't fall more in love with the place, we tried out the Scootour… and it totally blew us away! It instantly became the highlight of our trip—the thing everyone keeps talking about. Even the ride up the mountain was a treat, sitting on those well-kept comfortable leather seats in the back of the pickup, soaking in the stunning scenery. That alone felt like half the fun. The whole experience was seamless—from the easy booking process to the amazing team. The ladies running the tour were next-level fun and seriously professional. Honestly, it was five-star service all the way. We’ve done quite a few outdoor activities before, but this one stood out—first time we’ve ever been given gloves, comfy headscarves for hygiene and sweat, helmets, and even got to do a second run at full speed! And then, just when we thought it couldn’t get better… they handed out warm towels at the end to freshen up right there on the mountain. Now that’s what you call thoughtful! What made it even more special was seeing the young teenage ladies guiding the tours during this school holiday—it inspired our kids so much that they now want to pitch in and help during their holidays too. Total tripple win: fun for the whole family, unforgettable views and ride, and a bit of life inspiration thrown in. We will definitely be coming back, my brother and family is visiting from the USA in Oct, we will be coming!! Best regards Ivan
I P — Google review
Had an absolute blast this morning. Perfect weather for our zoom down the “mountain”. You get to do the course twice so on the second time round, you are so much more confident and can really pick up speed. My seven year old was tall enough to scoot by himself and is already asking when we can go again.
Geraldine R — Google review
Such an amazing and exhilarating experience! The scooters are easy to use and you can make it as risky or safe as your comfortable with, which makes it great for all ages! Some of the trails are on the edge of the foothills, while others are through the forest, so the views are stunning! Positive: gets your adrenaline rush for the day! Our guide, Kruger, was fun and made it exciting. Negative: if you want to go fast, make sure your at the head of the group. Interesting: they have a photographer who takes hi quality photos while your riding and you receive a link to the files which they email to you afterwards.
Kelli T — Google review
Easy booking, clear instructions, super friendly and helpful staff First time doing a mountain scooter and it’s an amazing experience, especially with the beautiful sunset

My son started grade 4 in January 2025 coming from an elite private school in Johannesburg. I can say without hesitation that DBCS is the most well rounded and wholesome school that I have ever encountered. Their approach to education is how I have always envisioned it but could never find. Education at DBCS stretches far beyond the classroom to experiencing nature and the great outdoors on a regular basis, and boys are required to exercise discipline and have a personal work ethic of the highest order. Our son is truly blessed to have the kind of foundation that is being fostered at DBCS.

Awesome experience at the Canyons Drakensberg. Our guides were well trained and kept us safe and informed throughout the forests. The views you experience while ziplining is so beautiful. This was our 3rd time Ziplining at the Canyons and we only now found out about the loyalty program where if you do it 3 times the 4th is free. Sadly we missed out on the first 2 but now we are ready for the next. We have done the one in Swaziland and in Tsitsikamma and this ons is definitely our favourite

Love Lions Alive Sanctuary (Non-Profit Company)

Wildlife refuge
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Rescued big cats from around the world in a perfect, spacious and serene environment, cared by a passionate and a knowledgeable host who gave us a private tour and shared her experience with them. I loved the fact that their enclosures are designed so that they can look out as far as their eyes can see. They are all in a such a good condition and looked genuinely happy to be there. This is not a tourist destination, so please visit their website, learn how things work and contact the owner prior to the visit.
Eric J — Google review
An absolutely heart warming experience. 3 of us stayed here overnight for the experience and wished that we could have stayed longer. Andi is an amazing woman. Listening to her personal stories of rescue and the stories of each of the cats at her sanctuary before they arrived had us in awe of her focus and determination to give the cats the best life possible under the circumstances. I’m quite particular before visiting a sanctuary / shelter to check on how ethical it is. Only then will I schedule a visit. Love Lions Alive ticked all my preliminary checklist conditions. And when we finally got there and spent time with Andi and the cats, I realised that this was a place that set standards that others should aspire to. In any rescue and rehabilitation center, there are individuals who need to be more hands on, to help with past trauma, provide medical care etc. It’s instinct that a human or an animal receiving that level of care will begin to trust again and be more attached to that person and accept them as part of their tribe / family. So, Andi being the person they trust, they obviously let her get closer to them, but at no point will a visitor to Love Lions Alive ever get in touching distance of a cat. That is one of the most important characteristics of an ethical sanctuary for me. The only ethical sanctuaries I know that will allow a few visitors to get in physical contact with a “wild” rescued animal, is when that animal needs long term regular medical care and hence physical contact with humans and it’s easier to treat them at that frequency if they don’t need to be sedated every single time. We stayed overnight and the braai over the campfire with the lions roars echoing off the cliffs is at the top of our list of most amazing wildlife experiences that we have had in our 5 years of living in South Africa. This is not a luxury holiday, this is a working sanctuary. But if you want a unique South African wildlife experience and to spend time quietly observing these big cats, then I can’t recommend this place enough.
Karishma P — Google review
This is a magical place, and its hosts are warm, welcoming and interesting. I recommend this place to anyone who wants to enjoy spectacular views, huge lawns where kids can run and play to their heart’s content, have braai dinner in great company on top of a hill surrounded by lions and other rescued big cats, and of course, watch lions and their friends all day long if you want. Many many thanks to Line and Andi for their warm welcome. This was our first stop on our first family trip to South Africa and it remains our favorite place.

We had the opportunity of spending an evening at Love Lions Alive Sanctuary and there are no words to describe our experience. We were made aware of Line and Andi's life works by our colleague Maddie and by watching the passion in Line as she talks about each lion has made me fall absolutely in love with this place and the energy it holds.
Lucy T — Google review
Thank you all for an inspiring 3 days. From the beautifully ethnic farm house, to the lions roaring their gutteral sounds at all hours, to Line telling us about the cat's past and showing her interaction and dedication to each one. What an experience and would recommend it to anyone.
Laura E — Google review
Great initiative to assist Lions in need of rescue. We were welcomed by Andi and given a very informative talk & tour of her facility. Andi shared some interesting stories about her lions and the history of her initiative. Her lions look in amazing condition and are obviously very well looked after. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Jonathan K — Google review
If you love lions or big cats, and you want to help these beautiful cats, then Love Lions Alive is the right sanctuary deserving your attention. It is a very humbling experience to spend time with the big cats, while participating to the daily life at the sanctuary and listen to Andi, and the stories behind each individual big cat. How can you help? By donating/adopt a lion/volunteer.

GG Conservation is one of the best places to visit in South Africa. They take excellent care of the lions, and it's clear that the animals are in great condition. Hearing the lions roar at night was an incredible experience unlike anything I've encountered before. Although I've seen many lions on my African journey, this visit was truly special. On top of that, the hospitality was exceptional, making the whole experience even more unforgettable 🦁🫰🏼
Meghyem — Google review
We enjoyed our over night stay here. The cottage has everything you will need. It is like a fully functional house. The lions were right up against the fence. The views were amazing. I'm sure if you get them feeding, it will be great. But the lions put on quote a show for us that night. The sounds you could hear coming from far and then the lions right at the bedroom window also started to make their sounds. Wow!!. That was so worth spending the night.

Fantastic place. If you want to relax this is the place to book. Lions roaring through the night. If you love 🦁 this is the ultimate. We will return.

Absolute stunning farm. What an experience to wake up to lions roaring. Patrick is an excellent host to guests, with an absolute passion for wildlife, & in particular his lions.🦁 The animals are kept in excellent condition. I have never seen lions in the wild, or captivity in such good condition.

We just spent 2 nights at the Lion house, and can say it was an amazing experience. Lions were around us all the time. Pat was very welcoming and showed us around, can't say enough about this facility

One of the most special places we have ever been. The lions roaring at night is indescribable amazing. The Lion House has everything you need. You can walk around and see the lions up close. Our neighbour and his 2 ladies were running around and chasing each other. The lions look like they have a good life and get all the need. This is definitely a good stop over for 2 or 3 days.

Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve

Nestled between the Eastern Cape and Free State borders, Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve is a stunning destination that captivates visitors with its breathtaking beauty. Known for its pristine blue waters, this expansive dam offers an array of activities such as kayaking and swimming in crystal-clear water. The serene environment is perfect for nature lovers, featuring scenic hiking trails that reward adventurers with exceptional views. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot various animals like buck and zebras roaming freely in the area.
The dam's smooth curves and towering presence create a breathtaking spectacle. Its design seems to defy earthly limitations, evoking a sense of wonder and awe. The interplay of light and shadow on its surface adds to its ethereal beauty. One could almost believe it was crafted by forces beyond human comprehension. It stands as a testament to both engineering prowess and artistic vision.
काश्वीर — Google review
Read carefully... the DAM is absolutely outstanding. It has nature, beauty, fishing, boating, birding, etc and is really a "must visit" place. The municipal resort, however, is a neglected skeleton of what it once was. The chalets have become so run down, that they were closed for renovation. The camping sites are still okay, but dustbins have no bottoms due to rust, drains at the taps of the camp sites are blocked and smelly. The ablutions have been retiled and in so doing, all hot taps have been removed. Dustbins were collected regularly, but braai's were not cleaned, we threw the previous people's ash out. So, for a bunch of guys on a boating or fishing weekend in summer it's not an issue, but it's really not okay for family or in any other season than summer. Staff at the gate were friendly, although it seemed that there was literally about 4 times more people than needed. I must stress that local staff were good and the state of the place is not their doing. Costs were not cheap enough to offset the state of the camp site. Maybe if a private group was running it, it could be returned to splendor but I don't think the Harrismith Municipality and management has the skills, vision or ability or desire
Dave M — Google review
This dam is huge! Very clean water and a pleasure to go swimming in. There are only a few rocks as you get into the water. You can also take a walk around the dam. Very pleasurable. It is a quiet area with some buck, wildebeest, blesbok and zebra.
Chami B — Google review
Like other south African government run facilities. The environment doesn't seem run down , yet it's closed for renovations apparently. You are able to pay to be on the site we really enjoyed it but what a shame that it's not running. Campsites are pretty good. Chalets are completely empty no beds or equipment. Who knows when you can camp or book a room.
Davin S — Google review
Blue, Blue, Blue waters!!! So well preserved! Going back again for Easter! You can drink the water from the dam… that says enough already! Kayaking and swimming here is a MUST! Ablutions by the electrical camp sites are phenomenal and clean.
Stacy V — Google review
The most beautiful Serene views. We had a great time and the Dam is so clean. Loved the kayaking and look forward to a visit in summer to do more water sports. Thr mountain reserve hikes are worth the effort. Views are exceptional. History is so interesting for younger ones to appreciate.
Shantal M — Google review
The area is stunning, the perfect outdoor environment thats not too far from joburg BUT the chalets are not good, they need major remodeling because you literally need to bring your own everything from bedsheets to plates, as if you were camping but got given an empty house to sleep in, even your own pillows because the ones that they have is rather gross. Is basically just need major interior refurbishment. Perhaps camp there untill they sort their chalets out.

Hiking Trails
Tugela Gorge is a popular hiking destination in South Africa, offering various trails of different lengths and scenery. The entrance fee to Royal Natal National Park, where the hike begins, is R50. The 15km out and back trail leads hikers through the mountainside, providing stunning views of the Drakensberg amphitheatre. Along the way, hikers can admire icy pools and clear mountain streams while trekking through a mountainside forest.
The Tugela Gorge is a definite must if you hike frequently. The trail is breath-taking with canopies of trees, ferns and moss, lots of places to fill up with refreshing water. The scenery is absolutely stunning. Near the end of the trail there are pools to cool down and the further you move in, the more it evolves in its beauty. The difficulty is about a 5/10. A total of about 15km.
Santana P — Google review
Beautiful, well marked, moderate hike to the gorge. Start early in the morning to have ample time to complete it. Aprox 7km going and 7 km coming back on same path.
Zaakirah M — Google review
The weather was such a letdown, BUT it didn't dampen our hiking experience. We covered about 15km for a return trip. The pool, just after the long track of rocks and boulders, beautiful views, which makes dipping into the cold waters worth your while. Magnificent scenic views throughout the trail even as you go into the forest. Love it.
Ms N — Google review
Great hike .. not easy but well worth it .. u can easily cover 19/20 km with return .. the first few kilometers are a gradual incline then you're in the gorge and you're boulder hopping. There is a path on the side of the boulders though which would be a better option for time and the ankles😅. It's easy to miss it though. Be sure to take a swim in the lovely pools in the gorge

Entrance fee to Royal Natal National Park is R50. This hike is one of the most amazing day hikes in South Africa. This hike begins at Thendele camp in this park. The total distance is a 15km out and back trail. Some people choose to go further into the gorge to get views of the tallest waterfall in the world. The icy pools look amazing and daring people take a dip in some of them. Spectacular views of the amphitheatre can be seen along the hike. The trail meanders up and goes through some forests. Water stops are mostly few and far between (in winter) but there are stops at the beginning and toward the end of the trail. Overall and amazing day hike.
Yusuf P — Google review
This hike ambles along the mountainside slowly gaining in altitude. Before long you find yourself staring at the maginificence of the Drakensberg amphitheatre that wraps around you. The path then dives under the canopy of trees and into a real mountainside forest before emerging again on the other side. All along the route are small streams where you can refill your water bottle from the clear water that flows from the mountain. There is enough parking spots at the start of the route and also access to a river for a dip after the walk. There are normally a car gaurd or two at the start who are not paid and make a living from watching the vehicles.
Wybrand G — Google review
One of the most spectacular day hikes in the Berg. Quite long for the average person walking, but also a superb trail run if started early in the morning (7-8) before everyone arrives

Amphitheatre is a massive mountain with cliffs that resemble an amphitheater, offering scenic hiking trails and the opportunity to embark on a challenging five-day hike leading to the top of Tugela Falls, the world's second highest waterfall. The trail provides breathtaking panoramic views of Lesotho from the Roof of the World. Along the way, hikers can camp in designated areas or opt for a more rustic experience by sleeping in caves.
It’s not really fair to review a mountain range 😂 But This is truly worth a visit and if you go to one of the local parks for a walk, picnic or hike it will be well worth the experience!! Waterfalls
Tugela Falls is a stunning natural attraction in South Africa, featuring a series of five cascades that collectively measure an impressive 948 meters in height. It is renowned as one of the best day hikes and overnight hiking spots in the country, offering breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. The hike to Tugela Falls provides an opportunity to conquer the challenging chain ladders and access the Drakensberg escarpment.
Guys I just completed a Guinness record, I hiked the the tallest waterfall in the world It has been argued that Angel waterfall in Venezuela is the highest In 2016, however, a Czech scientific expedition took new measurements, making the falls 983 m (3,225 ft) tall. It has such an exceptional view from the top, not an easy hike but totally worth it as every path is well mapped out, stumbled across a few hikers, campers and even locals from Lesotho 🇱🇸 who gave us great company. Do the hike you’ll love it
Harrison G — Google review
Magnificent hike but not easy. We completed in 4hrs with ~45 min stop at the top and taking the ladders up (impressive and honestly frightening, be careful) + the gully down (physically intense but totally doable. Around 30 min down, should be 15 min up)
Lauren D — Google review
The hike was worth the 4 hours with kids the falls not somuch in December with no rain for a while in kzn but gor family time and reconnecting i highly recommend it The drive to sentinel you nedd a 4x4 or hire a shuttle at the lodge
Henry K — Google review
This place is a hiker's dream. The first 2kms are an incline, but if you're reasonably fit you should be fine. The rest of the way up is reasonably easy although the chain ladder may be challenging. This is a worthwhile hike, and I'd absolutely recommend it.
Phindile M — Google review
One of the most epic hikes in South Africa! 🏔️ Starting from Witsieshoek, the Tugela Falls trail via the Chain Ladder route is pure adventure—featuring jaw-dropping views from the first step to the edge of the world’s highest waterfall. 🏞️ You’ll cross high-altitude plains, scramble over boulders, and climb two secure metal ladders—the tallest soaring ~30m up the cliff face. It’s thrilling, exposed, and absolutely unforgettable. The top offers surreal views over the Drakensberg escarpment and the mighty Tugela plunging into the clouds below. 🧭 Hiker Tips (Day Hike): • Start early (7:30 AM) to beat weather & crowds • Bring 2L water, windbreaker, snacks & a camera • Permits: R240 (first day), R140 (additional), available at Witsieshoek Lodge • Distance: ~12km round trip | Duration: 5–7hrs • Difficulty: Moderate–Challenging (altitude & ladders) • Best Season: April–Sept (dry, clear views) ✅ Trail is well-marked, ladders are secure, and scenery is next-level. If you crave adventure, this hike delivers. 💥

Tugela Falls is a must for every hiker , beautiful and takes you away from the city to a relaxed and beautiful experience Tips below 1. Please do train , its a 6 km walk to the top and 6 km back down. To enjoy the hike I suggest you be fit and walk the distance. Remember to train with your backpack on ... 2. If you have friends joining you and scared of heights , get them to practice using a tall ladder , go up and down... its not bad but they must be prepared. Maybe a good idea to rent a safety harness so the experienced hikers can go to the top and keep the safety rope always tight 3. Make sure you have excellent pair of hiking boots and you are comfortable with them 4. Pack some snacks to have on the top and take along rain cover in case it rains 5. Take along swimming shorts as you can dip into the rock pools on top 6. Dont rush , enjoy your time and the environment 7. Plan your day , so start early and take the 4X4 shuttle to the start from the hotel as the road is extremely bad 8. Going down too early you will have to wait for your shuttle 9. Practice to use the outdoors as your open door toilet 10. Be comfortable to walk around 12 km , 6 km only hill climbing and 6 km decent 11. Extremely beautiful and you want to enjoy it so please be FIT Enjoy

There are pros and cons Pros: The most amazing views you will ever see. One of the most diverse hikes I have done Over all best for avid hikers Fun 4x4 trail to get to the parking Cons: Parking impossible to get to without 4x4, lucky we had one Unless you're a fit hiker, you'll have a hard time getting there, 13km med grade hike There is no short cut, 3 hours walk there, 3 hours back, which is great but no one warned us, we didn't know and started at 11am, which upon paying wish we were warned we would not make it Security lacking!! Once on the route, locals in ponchos and ski masks confronted us begging for money, then 5km people walking back warned us there were more locals at the ladders harassing people for money and cigarettes, they said the hikers said they had been there before and previously there was security, this te however not one security guard, at the parking 1 person, rest of the trail nothing. The hikers warned us time wish we were going to have a problem with these locals, and we should rather turn back, everything was amazing the lack in security really put a damper on the hike, and unfortunately listening to the warning, we turned around before reaching the falls. However the hike is amazing and the views breath taking.

A beautiful hike with the most insane scenery. A bit of a tough one but it was all worth it when you get to experience the magnitude of Tugela Falls. There are a number of other water falls at the top of the mountain but be sure to cross the vast open plateau to get to the main attraction. Will definitely be doing that again!

It's a reproduction of some kind of traditional local houses, in different historical time . The guide gave us explanations about family, traditions, clothes, religion, superstitions, food and many more. We even tasted some ingredients of traditional local food. It was a wonderful experience during one-day visit in Golden Gate park. There is an entrance fee.

Besides the great landscape this place is very interesting and educational. We attended the annual Basotho new year festival and the entertainment was top tier. The employees are very warm and welcoming and willing to engage us and take pictures. We are highly grateful for the experience

We were excited to see the village as it is sich a great initiative, but there was no guide to take us through and we walked through it ourselves. There were no signs or information up about what we were seeing or where to go. It was not well maintained and some houses had been damaged and not repaired. Would have been far more educational if we had a guide or if they had any sort of information pamphlet or signs up.

We heard about this via previous visitors. Why not more attention is given to marketing, amazes me because it is a great experience. Loved having been made part of the tour. Very informative. Very pleasantly surprized tastings.

Golden Gate National Park emerges as a breathtaking haven, offering a close encounter with nature in its most pristine form. Situated amidst the awe-inspiring vistas leading to Clarens, this tourist attraction boasts spectacular views that rival the beauty of any landscape painting. What sets Golden Gate National Park apart is its proximity to the Amphitheater of the Drakensberg mountain, also known as the Maloti mountain in Sesotho. This infusion of African allure lends an unparalleled charm to the park, making it a truly unique destination for nature enthusiasts. A highlight of the park is the Basotho Cultural Village, perched atop a hill overlooking a vast expanse of land. Here, one can witness the pure essence of nature, with early morning moments offering glimpses of various animals grazing in their natural habitat. From springbuck to deer, wilderbeast, and zebra, each sighting is a testament to the park's commitment to preserving its biodiversity. In essence, Golden Gate National Park offers an immersive experience that allows visitors to forge a deep connection with the natural world. It's a place where African heritage and scenic beauty converge, offering a glimpse into the soul of the continent. For anyone seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature, Golden Gate National Park is an absolute must-visit destination.

Snow at Afriski. WOW. Mixed feeling. WHAT WAS GOOD. - The snow - The food & music at night - The vibe - Bum boarding with the kids - Backpakkers area is heated so its very nice and cozy. - Everone that comes through are there for the same reason. To experiance the snow and to have a great time with Family. WHAT WAS BAD - Trying to get hold of Afriski is pathetic. The contact numbers dont work and they dont get back to you on email.Only after phoning via Facebook mesenger. - Backpackers area - Often no Hot water. The Hot Water Tanks are not enough. - The Rooms are not sound proof. Persons playing loud music or laughing at 02:00 can be heard in every room. - The on-line booking system and what happens at booking counter dont match. And it frustrates new guest which could be avoided. - The overall service from staff is not what you expect for a resort of this caliber. Cars that were stuck, when asking staff for help they dont care to help in a speedy manner that is required. The owners of this place need to do a full audit of staff and management. AfriSki is easily rated as a 5, but staff and maintenance / resort team is very bad. If you know there are many tourist coming, then be more prepared and work faster. Not everyone has a 4x4. AfriSki could double their revenue if the roads were made more accesible for normal front wheel drive cars. If the staff could clear the road before the masses arrive or leave. Dont wait until somene is stuck before you go fetch the Tractor. Mixed feelings but we will be back. Hopefully they get the staff and unpreparedness solved.

A beautiful winter wonderland tucked away in the mountains of Lesotho. The drive there is long but the view is so worth it. I have a few suggestions though 1. They need to maybe pave the entrance or do something as it gets really muddy due to the melting snow. 2. The restaurant needs to be expanded as its so small for the amount of people that visit and during peak periods its a nightmare to navigate. 3. Their bathrooms also need a major upgrade. I would suggest they build a separate change room and bathroom as its chaotic. Other than that, its a lovely place and I would definitely visit again.

We booked to stay at Afriski We stayed at the the Levingo which was a two bedroom self catering place - it was neat and clean and we had hot running water at any given time! (At reception other guests were complaining that day had been gone days without hot water, not sure which accommodation they booked). The place was warm with fire places and gas heaters and electric blankets, it gets very cold so that was great! Our room also had free WiFi, which was slow, but manageable. However at check-in they told us that there is no free wifi and we ended up buying a SIM card with R500.00 airtime for data, and it doesn’t allow you to hotspot, but it turns out that our room specifically had free wifi so we kind of wasted the R500.00. You have to request for new towels from the ladies that come to clean the room as they do not change towels daily. It gets very muddy when the snow melts, so use boots and not normal shoes as your feet sinks into the mud, it would be great if they could perhaps tar the place. We ate at Sky Restaurant, it gets full, so book in advance. The food was average we had pizzas. We done the bum boarding and ski training - the bum boarding was super fun, the skiing was difficult eventually we gave up lol but it was not for us. Great experience we booked 4 days but only stayed for 3 days as we done everything and thought we should head back home.

Chalets need a bit of upkeep; while warm and cosy, a lot of the furniture needs replacing and selection of furniture could be better to accommodate cold, tired visitors. The chalets need a revamp to create a snowy mountain experience for visitors. The chalet felt too cramped with unfriendly furniture and needs to made more welcoming. Kitchen appliances worked very well. Yet it took ages to get the chalet serviced, which was frustrating.

It was difficult reaching the resort however it was worth it. My only suggestion is that the resort be more lenient with the skiing times. We were meant to arrive at 10am but because of the road blockades due to the snow, we ended up arriving at 12pm and the lessons were cut off.
Derrick M — Google review
Its a very beautiful place to visit, went with the family, a great snow experience but one needs to financially be ready for it. I stayed in Butha-Buthe (accomodation was full at the resort) which was about 70km from Afriski, the drive was beautiful, scenic, up and down, through the mountains. There’s a 100rand entrance fee for the adults and kids above 14yrs, Then activities are bum boarding(150rand), skiing(pricing is based on equipment rented), snow tubing(150rand), there’s a day pass for 1000rand for all, 1300 rands with a ski lesson. Will definitely visit again.
Febby S — Google review
We came on a Saturday as day visitors, booked for skiing online, i was even asked to fill in a form selecting boot sizes online and my booking included equipment. However on arrival I had to join long lines with no clear directions or whats what. Repeating the same thing i did online that was supposed to make my booking smooth on arrival. I had to pay extra for an helmet thats not included in the rental of equipment I had paid for and they ran out of this very same helmet so we didn’t get them and weren’t refunded for something you paid for but didn’t get. Had to pay a refundable deposit for a snow pass. I honestly don’t understand why all these things weren’t catered for in the online booking. Getting my equipment fitted too forever it was very busy and the staff were all over the place with no clear direction of what they’re doing. Our shoes are left out in the open not safe at all they might get stolen. Time came to do the skiing lessons the instructors were irritated and frustrated by everything. They seemed very overwhelmed by the crowd. I didn’t enjoy anything about the skiing experience. Bum border was great we got there early and it was as busy. I just felt like there should maybe be a limit on the number of people accepts in a day because it was a mess there. Then came ordering for a stood in a line for a good 1 hour 30 minutes just to get a boerie roll. Atleast at Gondola they would announce the delay in getting your food so you are aware. Unlike outside standing in the cold waiting to give the waiter your little paper to get a roll. Also the place is very muddy and you must clean the mud off your feet to get on the snow. The people assisting everywhere they speak in sotho like we all understand the language.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Golden Gate Highlands National Park is a hidden gem nestled in the foothills near Clarens, South Africa. Known for its stunning rock formations that shimmer with vibrant colors, this park offers visitors a chance to witness rare wildlife like bearded vultures and bald ibises. In winter, the landscape transforms into a magical scene as snow dusts the golden cliffs, creating breathtaking vistas. Exploring Golden Gate Highlands is an adventure worth every moment.
Absolutely breathtaking. Golden Gate Highlands is a place where time slows down and the mountains glow gold at sunset. The dramatic sandstone cliffs, wide-open grasslands, and peaceful trails make this one of South Africa’s most underrated parks. Don’t miss the Brandwag Sentinel hike and the quiet drive through the valley.

We stayed at the Noord Brabant House which is a stand alone house in Sanparks. It is a very old house and the amenities are extremely basic. The house need to be updated as there is not enough seating for a family of 6, but a total of six beds. It is a very tranquil place and the view is unbelievable! The baboons play in the tree at the back of the house so beware and close everything. We woke up one morning with the Zebra's grazing a few metres from the house.
Marleen — Google review
It's a beautiful place! A must-see. Buy a permit so you can take the loops. There are two of them, and the scenery and lookout points are worth way more than the R70 per person. The roads are in good condition. The park is well-maintained. The picnic site has toilets, but we didn't stop there, so I can't comment on their condition. We saw zebras, eland, wildebeest and baboons. The main road is fairly busy because it's a through-road. That makes it tricky to stop and enjoy the views. That's why I strongly recommend buying the permits to drive on the loops. And don't cheat and drive there without paying. Do the right thing. We found a waterfall with a gorgeous pool. Now I have to go back in summer so I can swim in it.

The Golden Gate Highlands Park and Dino World were an amazing experience — fun, educational, and full of beautiful scenery. Dino World offers fascinating insights into the past of the dinosaurs. I’ll definitely be going back to explore more and do some hiking!

Phenomenal mountain range. Arguably better than the Drakensberg. Lush vegetation, animals and awesome hikes. The views and drive through is breathtaking. Definitely needs to be visited at least once. I’ve been going every year. Incredible every time

A beautiful area surrounded by mountains. A great camping place. We visited the dinosaur museum which is literally across the road. And had some great coffee at Phoka cafe. The whole place is filled with so much culture and history. Such a great place to vacation with the whole family

Cant believe i waited so many years to go see the golden gate highlands national park. What I really enjoyed were the 2 loops that can be driven up into the mountain on nicely tarred road. Gets you high enough to experience the upper area and majestic land scape without having to do a hard hike.

LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary

Animal protection organization
Nature & Parks
Big cat sanctuary offering guided tours, overnight options & animal welfare programs.
I have just returned from a 7-day stay at LIONSROCK and I am still glowing with the experience. From the moment I arrived I knew that I was in a very special place with people who love and care about animals and the environment as much as I do. All animals living at LIONSROCK receive the best care and there are not just the lions, tigers, leopards, the hyena and cheetah in their huge enclosures, but outside are rescued horses as well as wild animals such as antelope, gnus, zebras and they can roam freely the entire sanctuary. The daily tours with an electric off-road vehicle or on foot were so interesting, enjoyable as well as educational as the guides were so knowledgeable, accommodating and patiently answering any questions. At the lodge everybody was very friendly and happily catered to my needs as a vegan. The food was great and plenty of it as well, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables deliciously prepared. My room was charming with a lovely view and sometimes the horses or antelopes walked past my window. All the staff provided any assistance I needed and organised the transport from and back to JNB airport. I cannot find any fault on anything, even the weather was perfect albeit a bit cooler than I had expected.

Overall, this was such a pleasant experience. We slept overnight as a group of about 40 and took part in a number of activities. Ntate Max and his team made the booking process such a breeze with the logistics of booking for 40 adults. Communication was so seamless from the onset and that translated when we checked in, the staff was patient with us and made the experience lovely. We went team building and ntate Mofokeng his assistant kept to the briefing and went above our expectations. We then went on a game drive; the guides were so patient and knowledgeable. The whole experience was such a breath of fresh air. All the animals were obviously well taken care of. The premises was also well taken care of. The staff is clearly attentive to the needs of the animals. The food?! My goodness! Everyone was raving about the chef. She really outdid herself. Chef's kiss👌🏾 Some members of our group were in cabin 3 and there was only one shower which doesn't seem practical; but again ntate Max was willing to assist with that. The showers can also be updated. Also the 13km dirt road drive is such a drag. Not sure if it's the property's responsibility to fix it, but it would make the drive easier. But like I said this was overall such a beautiful experience. We also used their conference room and the team was always ready to assist us. The staff showed such professionalism and tended to all our needs and wants. I genuinely take my hat off to them.

We went for a day trip and went on the full tour of the whole feeding process etc and got to meet the vet and it was amazing. We had a very well informed guide who put up with all the questions we had (Kwazi, thank you very much you were an excellent guide.) It was amazing to see all the animals being fed and hearing about where they came from and how they came to the sanctuary. The service inside was just as excellent, we were helped by Evelyn and Sam who were so friendly it caught me off guard. Anyway, highly recommend to go. Amazing service, and views it's lovely there.

My son and i have just had the most fantastic few days at Lionsrock. It is a three star venue with 5 star service. We enjoyed visiting after years of making monthly donations to the work they do. It was so heartwarming to see how well the animals are cared for. What a treat to see lions, tigers and cheetahs close up but in their own protected space with no human interaction or petting. These animals have landed in a wonderful safe environment after being badly treated. Thank you yo all the staff who take care of all their needs.

I visited on a Saturday. I had a very great time. The tour guide was the best ever. The prices were very reasonable and it was actually a valentine’s special. Quite a lot of animals.
Killieden S — Google review
A planned quick visit turned into an enjoyable 4-hour stay and tour of the facilities. The sanctuary is rich with well looked after animals, and we had a great time at the restaurant. The park has lions, tigers, leopards, and many varieties of game.

Beautiful place. They offer accomodation and have a restaurant. I went to the restaurant. The steak was perfect, juicy on the inside and crisp on the outside. The drive to the restaurant is therapeutic and animals are roaming around so you get to feel a sense of the place beautifully. They do offer game drives as well should you sleep over. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can take your children with for an exciting experience

This place is truly special and not just the location but the food, service, rooms, and work they do with protecting and caring for big cats is phenomenal. If you want a beautiful trip and want to support a good cause, I highly recommend Lions Rock. Thank you, Sam, for the excellent service and Miriam for the delicious food.

Its a beautiful store. Its probably a place for tourists to pick up some goodies and Souvenirs. But as a local, I felt the shop items were overpriced even compared to the other stores along the street. The bubble tea was something the kids enjoyed.

This store is really fun to be inside. Tons of stuffs to choose from like toys for kids, jams, pickles, biscuits, dishes, etc. For those who prefer liquor, there's something for everyone. The store has a lot of old artefacts that will take you back in time. Stunning views from the back of this store. There is also a place to sit and have your tea and snacks.

Yummy beer and gin tasting. Could not decide what to drink after the tasters, everything was superb. Food well prepared and reasonably priced. Service a bit slow, even though it was not busy. Enjoyed the outside seating, lovely autumn day. We arrived quite early , before 10h00 and it was still very quiet.
