Big warning... The road there and up the mountain is rough, so be prepared and have a high car. Other than that, all I can begin this review is with the word 'wow'. Learning about the true side of South African history is an eye opener. The hike was good and maintained, given the evident low budget. The bathrooms are very clean. The view was just stunning. I wish this site was given more awareness, as this is definitely a gem with visiting. You will spend a few hours there and it is advised to bring water, snacks and a good pair of shoes. Despite the very rough a dodge path up by car, it was definitely worthwhile. Cost(cash only): R40 adult R20 pensioner

Very educational battlesight of the battle of spieoenkop translated in a few languages to accomodate all. Various graves marking fallen soldiers and semi preserved trenches. Makes for interesting reading and worth a visit! Not far from bergville and very close to the N3, its worth a detour and if you jave time to spare or just want to take a break and take in some history.

Very well kept area, clean and beautiful. To go back to you roots is very important so please visit places such as these as much as you can to honor and also learn.

The young lady at the gate was very friendly , welcoming and very helpful . She explained a bit about the trail her directions were clear. We had a good hike from point A till the end. Beautiful view . If you want to visit please ensure you have cash and you're wearing comfortable shoes, sunscreen is a must , camp chairs and water a necessity after the 2 hours walk around .

Bad maintained for such a historic site

Great experience, just the road thorwards the site isn't suited for lower vehicles. Remember to take cash for entrance at spioenkop

R35 to enter cash only, dirt road more for SUV, 4x4, bakkies or cars with higher ground clearance. Not to say a normal car will not get you there, just slower. Forth the trip up and worth the walk around the battlefield.

Beautiful Big 5 game reserve. Excellent sightings. Stayed at The Springbok Lodge and had a fantastic weekend. We went on 4 game drives and saw either cheetah or lions on every drive. Highly recommend this game reserve.

Stayed at lions valley lodge for 4 nights. Had great food, great service. Had amazing sightings. Would recommend to anyone wanting a great experience and is will to pay for what you get.

We stayed in a Private Lodge within the Reserve. It is not a self drive Reserve.

Im happy that this is a game preserve. The animals are in their own habitat and can behave as such. The preserve carries out meaningful projects to keep the animals healthy and protect them. I won't include rhino pics as another way to protect them.

A small museum that packs a punch about the Ladysmith Siege and some context around the Anglo-Boer conflict. Some of the information jumps a bit from the previous display making it a bit confusing to follow. Signage in Afrikaans and English. Spent about 90 minutes reading and viewing all the displays.

This museum houses so much history about Ladysmith town and the battle fields around the area. If you are in and around town, you can visit the museum for as little as R14 for adults and R5.50 for children and pensioners.

I spent the morning in Ladysmith. With nothing to do but wait for the missus's car to be ready, I decided to visit the Siege Museum. How very interesting, and it was just R9 for pensioners. There are so many stories being told in the displays, but my favourite was about the three Long Tom field guns the Boers used. Apparently, one of them was damaged and they had to cut the end off the barrel, so shortening it. It still worked, so they sent it to the siege of Mafikeng, where it was named 'Die Jood'.

Decided to visit Ladysmith as we love historical places. Never again. Could not get close to the town hall / museum as there were big crowds of people (perhaps grants were being paid today?)....but no social distancing, very few masks being worn and no parking at all.

Still kept in a good condition and a must visit. Great to read about the history of battles and pictures of all the battles available. Locals will warn you outside in the street to hide your valuables for pick-pocketers.

Lots of history, text and loads more actual items and relics from the Boer and Anglo wars. however, old run down museum. takes about 1 hour to walk through and skimming bits of text of history without reading everything.

The reserve is beautiful, and there is plenty of wildlife around. Main attraction is the camping and boating on the dam. The ablutions could be better maintained but are serviceable and clean with toilet paper replaced daily, and there is hot water for showers. The campsites are mostly clean, but the grass is a little long in areas. It's worth taking something to clear your site, just in case. Garbage was collected daily, and the honorary officers drive through the camps fairly often, which was nice to see. The electrical points could be in better condition. Some are missing their weather covers but do work. The water is listed as drinkable, but I would take your own. On a whole, Spieonkop dam is a pleasurable experience.

Beware the road isn't labeled. It's a long off road up a mountain. Breathing taking, it's an adventure. When you start fearing you can't see anything keep driving. At the top of the gate entrance is R35pp and you given a map. The most breath taking views. Adventure Awaits!!!

I had a lovely experience at Spioenkop Nature Reserve. The dam is lovely for fishing. There are also wild game such as giraffe, kudu and wildebeest. Ablution facilities were also clean. The roads are not tarred and some parts can be quite tricky without a 4x4 vehicle but if you just going to the dam there is no need for a 4x4 vehicle.

Fantastic place for a wild getaway. Campsites are surrounded by wildebeest, zebra, impala, and all manor of wildlife. Ablutions are functional and clean, plenty hot water. Park roads are better suited to suv/bakkies

Did this trip last year. This experience exposes you to epic views and sceneries of this magnificent mountain range. A perspective you cannot experience any other way. Snow tops and waterfalls. When a great day meets a great opportunity life is perfectly in balance.

Me and my other half decided to take a short helicopter trip up to the mountains. The views were phenomenal and the couple running the agency were very friendly. Would highly recommend!

Service has change due to new management. Excellent chopper flights and scenery

Do not recommend at all. They kept delaying and delaying the trip at the last minute. Very poor communication. We hung around for it for 4 hours after we had checked out despite having a 5 hour trip home. They didn't pitch up at the scheduled time. When we called they asked to delay it again by an hour. By then we were fed up.

Horrible experience. Would not rely on them to take you on this trip even if you book a month in advance! They kept delaying the trip untill we actually had to cancel it because it was too late. Planned our entire day around this trip and they didn't seem to care about the inconvenience it caused.

Very informative museum. It could use some maintenance and upkeep with the displays. Having hiked Spioenkop and then seeing the history in the museum the next day was amazing. It is free to enter so it is a great place for those who are at every budget.

Easily accessible and well laid out. We showed ourselves around which was fine. If planning on visiting the Battlefields, it's a good idea to precede that with a museum visit.

This place is quite interesting, I learnt that the group of Ben Viljoen's men had a baboon as a mascot🤣 it is well kept considering it's run on donations. Well worth adding onto your itinerary if you're looking for things to do around Winterton

Interesting museum with lots of worthwhile things to see. The caravan and the story around it is exceptionally interesting, and well worth the visit in itself. Sadly, the premise and collection seems to be woefully underfunded.

Small museum with some interesting Boer war information. More specifically the beer war in the area of Winterton and Spionkop. The highlight for us was the first caravan that had been built by John Weston and his history.

What a lekker place. Staff is what make it amazing. 12 zips crazy hike back to the clouds at the end but all very much worth it.

Awesome experience at the Canyons Drakensberg. Our guides were well trained and kept us safe and informed throughout the forests. The views you experience while ziplining is so beautiful. This was our 3rd time Ziplining at the Canyons and we only now found out about the loyalty program where if you do it 3 times the 4th is free. Sadly we missed out on the first 2 but now we are ready for the next. We have done the one in Swaziland and in Tsitsikamma and this ons is definitely our favourite

Indulge in one their tasting boards for the full experience and find out which one is your favourite. The Giant’s Castle Stout is a winner and a case made its way back to Durban.

We love this place. The environment is great for kids and the views are breathtaking especially at sunset. The beer tasting is a fun way to try something new. Service is efficient and consistent.

Great beer. Special love the blond ale, though their pilsner and pale ale are world class. Wonderful place to hang out with friends. My son started grade 4 in January 2025 coming from an elite private school in Johannesburg. I can say without hesitation that DBCS is the most well rounded and wholesome school that I have ever encountered. Their approach to education is how I have always envisioned it but could never find. Education at DBCS stretches far beyond the classroom to experiencing nature and the great outdoors on a regular basis, and boys are required to exercise discipline and have a personal work ethic of the highest order. Our son is truly blessed to have the kind of foundation that is being fostered at DBCS.

Attended their Wednesday afternoon concert last week, and it was just tremendous. The choir is definitely one of the jewels of South Africa.

This was great, very worth while doing, mother and daughter ran the outing, we did two scoots down the hill, was super fun trying to keep up. The scooters are really good, very forgiving and very easy to ride and have fun with.

We had a quick 3-day getaway to the Drakensberg hoping to catch some snow—sadly, no luck there—but the kids had an absolute blast, and the views were just breathtaking! Just when we thought we couldn't fall more in love with the place, we tried out the Scootour… and it totally blew us away! It instantly became the highlight of our trip—the thing everyone keeps talking about. Even the ride up the mountain was a treat, sitting on those well-kept comfortable leather seats in the back of the pickup, soaking in the stunning scenery. That alone felt like half the fun. The whole experience was seamless—from the easy booking process to the amazing team. The ladies running the tour were next-level fun and seriously professional. Honestly, it was five-star service all the way. We’ve done quite a few outdoor activities before, but this one stood out—first time we’ve ever been given gloves, comfy headscarves for hygiene and sweat, helmets, and even got to do a second run at full speed! And then, just when we thought it couldn’t get better… they handed out warm towels at the end to freshen up right there on the mountain. Now that’s what you call thoughtful! What made it even more special was seeing the young teenage ladies guiding the tours during this school holiday—it inspired our kids so much that they now want to pitch in and help during their holidays too. Total tripple win: fun for the whole family, unforgettable views and ride, and a bit of life inspiration thrown in. We will definitely be coming back, my brother and family is visiting from the USA in Oct, we will be coming!! Best regards Ivan

Had an absolute blast this morning. Perfect weather for our zoom down the “mountain”. You get to do the course twice so on the second time round, you are so much more confident and can really pick up speed. My seven year old was tall enough to scoot by himself and is already asking when we can go again.

Such an amazing and exhilarating experience! The scooters are easy to use and you can make it as risky or safe as your comfortable with, which makes it great for all ages! Some of the trails are on the edge of the foothills, while others are through the forest, so the views are stunning! Positive: gets your adrenaline rush for the day! Our guide, Kruger, was fun and made it exciting. Negative: if you want to go fast, make sure your at the head of the group. Interesting: they have a photographer who takes hi quality photos while your riding and you receive a link to the files which they email to you afterwards.

Amazing tour guide, who is super knowledgeable. He was so reassuring and patient with various guest encouraging them to interact with the various snakes and spiders so we could all face fears and enjoy meeting them. All of the reptiles, spiders and other little animals are well looked after, and learnt a lot during the tour! Lots of fun!

Extremely disappointed with the Gel overlay which I had done last night 27th. The overlay was sticky to the touch. When I went back the therapist advised I must come back to have re done. I duly went back at 7.30. On the 2nd attempt same result therapist tried to convince me that it must dry. I requested her to remove the the whole lot as I was extremely disappointed and angry but didn't show it. I requested my money back. I was told she would be in contact with the manager who's phone was on voice-mail. I returned on our departing morning 28th. And asked for my refund the manager advised me she had to contact her regional manager and get back to me. I had to contact Izelle to try and resolve thevissue! Only to be advised the manager is at the doctor. Please could someone resolve this scenario. REGARDS ANTOINETTE BELL It's the 29th I gad to call again this morning and still no manager response!

This was a surprise gift which did not disappoint. The Staff were welcoming, well presented and gave us one of the best Aromatherapy massages we have had. Neither of us wanted the Pedicure part of our package and were offered a foot exfoliation instead which was also good. Our one constructive suggestion, and the reason for our 4 Star rating, is that the gowns could do with replacing/upgrading although this does not deter us from recommending this Spa.

Beautifull landscapes and veiws from your challet. As with a lot of places, a lot of things is in meed of maintenance. The staff is eccellent and go above qnd beyond. The La Vita spa is one of the best I've been to. It was a great holiday.

Stunning Bushman Paintings at Kamberg. Loved my stay at Molweni.

Very pleasant reserve with well maintained trails. The staff member at the reception was friendly and explained all the day hikes available. Although we didn’t stay there, the chalets look like they are in decent condition. Note there are two daily guided hikes up to the San rock art at Game Pass Shelter: 9am and 11am. Beware of kids throwing stones at vehicles in Thendele Village just before the park entrance.

Came for a family weekend getaway with children and found the accommodation cosy, neat and clean. Having the opportunity to fly fish and hike in such a beautiful area is a wonderful experience.

Roman Baths - Kamberg Nataure Reserve If you in this area i highly recommend you do the hike to the Roman Baths, approximately 14k hike (there and back) easy to moderate. Look out for the arrows as they can be easily missed. I suggest you try org a map from the office. Leave early so you can spend the day at the baths. Well worth it. You can jump into plunge pools and soak up the amazing backdrop of mountain's. Loved it.

Beautiful day in the Kamberg Nature Reserve. Our park officer, was so amazing and friendly. Went out of her way to make sure got there without getting our vehicle stuck.... in mud situation. Easy hike for the young and old, lovely waterfalls and rock pools and not to mention the clean crisp water, so so refreshing 😀

Beautiful area, track a bit overgrown, markings weren't good so download walk beforehand but still worth the visit. We walked to the Roman Baths.

Did a day trip from Durbs and got there within 2.5hrs. We did the waterfall hike - 4kms round trip, with my 60+ mum and 7 yo nephew. So it’s quite manageable for folk of all ages. The drive into kamberg is testing … the road outside Nottingham is littered with potholes. Then there’s the 18km gravel road in which can take up to 30mins. We did it in a front wheel drive sedan but would recommend a vehicle with higher clearance and all wheel drive; see pic with the water-logged areas which can trap a vehicle. The hike itself was stunning especially the waterfall and pools. The path was recently cleared which makes for easy walking. We spotted a rinkhals on the way. The manager of the lodge was such a lovely lady. We’ll be back.

We visited the wine cellar at a rainy day in the beginning of May. We were heartly welcome and bought a nice collection of our favorite cape wines. We absolutely want to come back. Thank you very much !

Yesterday we visited The Wine Cellar in Rosetta - what a wonderful experience it turned out to be! The Cellar itself is incredibly well stocked with an amazing selection of wines at very good prices whilst the owners give very good advice on choice. After making out take home selection we selected a bottle for lunch with was a meat & cheese platter served under the trees. Highly recommended!

Always a great stop. They have a wide range for all budgets and tastes. Are you looking for a great value for money wine? This is the place. Want something unique? This is the place. Make sure you visit when you are nearby.

Unmatched selection of fine wines, unique wines, and personally selected everyday wines, presented by very knowledgeable first-hand experience, in a very friendly and accommodating setting. We just drove an hour out of our way, for the third time, and we left with more than we wanted to, very excited at the prospect of many evenings' anticipated wine experiences. What's not to love?

The coffee was alright and it came in a plunger which was great. They have some amazing stuff on same and a good selection of books. It would not be my first choice for lunch. There are better places to go in the area.

Great experience. Their cheeses are excellent with full flavour. If you like cheese this is the place to go. Don't be put off by the drive and garage style shop. The owner is very knowledgeable and treated my whole family to a tasting. Thoroughly recommend.

The cheese farm was easy to find, and the road leading up to it wasn't as bad as some people have made it out to be. Very peaceful environment. We really enjoyed the cheese tasting, which helped us determine what to buy at the end. The owner, who is the cheese maker, was really knowledgeable. His wife makes marmalade and jams, which were for sale as well. It's definitely worth checking out.

We loved it here! The owner was very friendly and helpful. We tasted all their cheeses and loved most of them! Lovely selection and they had some jams and preserves aswell.

It feels a bit of the beaten path when driving up, the shop is in a garage setup and makes you think otherwise but this is a husband and wife business and the knowledge and the chat, he keeps you informed about the different cheeses and how the different palettes are affected. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our time and conversation. He also converted us to absolutely loving Blue cheese. Definitely a place I will visit again.

Best cheeses I've ever had! You can taste the quality in the products. The host is very welcoming and friendly. He explained the cheese making process to us and also explained the kind of flavors infused in the cheeses. You can see that he is very passionate about what he does and it is shown in the taste and quality of the cheeses that he makes. A visit to Marrakesh Cheese farm is highly recommended. It was really the highlight of my weekend at the Midlands. 😊

Fordoun Hotel should definitely be rated lower than 5 stars. The rooms are very dark inside and definitely needs better lighting. There is no bottle water provided. Breakfast is average. service is very slow for breakfast and dinner. We stayed twice in the last year and it was most disappointing. stayed in many other venues in the Midlands; for the price we paid, there is a lot better out there.

Our high expectations were handsomely exceeded. Decor sophisticated yet relaxing, vibrant colours without being garish. Essence of good taste. Wide range of recreational facilities (including an extensive spa set-up), excellent food (new young chef with some great ideas), outstanding service. I brought my mother to Fordoun to celebrate her 75th birthday. I chose the " Besties Package " and I have been exceptionally happy with each and every aspect offered... Your menu was out of the top draw... both dinner and breakfast were sumptuous, beautifully presented and delicious! Your entire staff are warm, friendly and professional making the experience relaxing and comfortable at all times. The spa treatments were more than I expected and exactly what I wanted my mother to feel like by the end of it all... calm, relaxed, rejuvenated, spoilt and recharged for another year! Very impressed. Waitress was very kind and I really enjoyed tonight's dinner. I recommend this restaurant and t definitely worth it.

The Belgian Waffle was good, the ice cream let it down a little. That said, the chocolate covered strawberries, although expensive are exceptional. We went back the next day for more. I do think that plain the Belgian chocolate is best. The other stuff is decent too.

Such a cozy little spot in the Midlands! Did the chocolate dipping with my boyfriend and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they use QUALITY chocolate. You get to choose between white and milk chocolate for your dipping then they bring out a bunch of items you can choose to dip! Prices are calculated by weight so you can really go wild. If you have any left over chocolate you can also have it moulded. They have a bunch of other hand crafted chocolates that you can buy (also have some cute things for gifts) I didnt try the chocolate shot thing but will definitely come again to do it! Highly recommend for all ages.

The moment I stepped through the door, I was greeted by the rich, indulgent scent of chocolate. I loved it. The people inside were just as lovely as the aroma: welcoming, kind, and clearly proud of what they do. Chocolate Heaven lives up to its name. The chocolate is crafted right next door, in the building beside the shop. I settled in with a coffee and took in the peaceful view over the small dam at The Junction, the centre where it’s all located. It’s the kind of place you remember. I’ll definitely be back — whether it’s to treat my beautiful woman to something special, or to grab a voucher for a friend who needs a birthday present.

I would have put a zero star if I could! I bought a discounted item at their furniture shop and the sales team didn’t tell me the tray was damaged. They didn’t remove the price tag from the tray when I bought on purpose so I couldn’t see it was damaged by the light exposure. I contacted them by email right after I noticed as I was already back home and I live quite far away. I asked for a refund or a discount but they haven’t answered yet after 5 days. I can’t use this as it looks bad with the mark of the price tag due to light exposure or something. See pictures attached. Very disappointed by this experience ! I won’t go back there.

Love the little shops , there is a health, coffee and chocolate shop. A little park for the kids to play and a place to just sit and take in the beautiful scenic view.

A quaint curio store that houses an assortment of trinkets, toys and interesting goods. Worth a stop if you are in the area. You might just find something that you were always looking for or never knew you were looking for.

An item I wanted to buy rang up on the till at R100 more than the marked price. The lady phoned another lady to come and sort it out. She arrived from another shop in the centre and was extremely rude and abrupt. She also very shortly and rudely told the lady to take the prices off all the other items on the floor until she printed correct prices. I understand price increases but she should check the store prices if she is in charge. Very very rude!!!!!!!!!!

This is an absolutely beautiful place. Super relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. There were 2 lakes with ducks. The sun was out and the birds were singing, they have beer on tap and gin which I found quite wonderful. Drinks are beautifully presented and garnished and taste out of this world. They have a variety of locally brewed beers which is fantastic as well as gin, there are also bottles of this you can buy. Food is also available. The outdoor seating creates such a vibrant and relaxing atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend this place for beer and gin lovers.

This Brewery has to be on your bucket list when visiting the Midlands. Such a gorgeous setting and the pub is so unique. Do a beer and gin tasting and then decide what you want to get because they do have so many options. I had the gin and ginger and the blueberry gin and they were both delightful. Service was friendly and professional. Atmosphere is relaxed. There is a merch shop selling craft beer and clothing / keepsakes. Would highly recommend.

Nice atmosphere with a deck and umbrellas and seating outside. Beer and gin tasting available. My husband loves their craft beer range. He says they even have season craft beers. I didn't drink when we were there but I still enjoyed the place and the service.

This is a must see and visit location for the old world charm of a brewery/pub with a cosy fire roaring in the background as you indulge in a craft beer or gin. Alan our bartender was amazing. Take a drive down to the lake on the property, you will thank me later.

Nestled in the shady grounds of the elegant Rawdons Hotel in the heart of the Midlands Meander, you’ll find a thriving independent brewery which has long been delighting locals and visitors with a range of naturally brewed ales and lagers. Unfortunately it was a quick stop for a Pie-Eyed Possum Pilsner (crisp, dry pilsner highlighted by the noble saag hops) but this great venue never disappoints. A quint and comfortable setting on hotel grounds are absolutely serene. The pub has an authentic English pub feel & the taproom deck in the afternoon sunshine is very relaxing. Will definitely be back to tuck into the various beers.

We had a good experience doing beer tasting. The beer menu explaining all of the different type of beers was really funny and intelligent and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately when we visited the bar they didn't have coffee or the beer that we wanted because they were waiting for delivery, which is understandable. Overall this is a really beautiful area.

A great adventure. The staff is amazing, I was alone so it was basically a private adventure, I had tons of fun. Their views while you zip line were stunning, the beautiful canopy so full and green. Perfect for first timers or regulars.

What a fun, spontaneous and adrenalin filled adventure! A definite for anyone! We phoned on the Friday morning and were kitted up by 11am! Such wonderful, fun, friendly, reassuring and encouraging staff! A very memorable experience we will never forget!

Incredible experience! I definitely think everyone should try this. The staff were all so friendly and knowledgeable. The guides were great. They kept everyone calm and gave very clear instructions. The views are amazing!

Took my Grandson(7) for some adrenaline activation. I just arrived around 12:00, no booking. The next trip was 14:00. We decided to wait but you will appreciate that a 7 year old doesn't really have patience. He played on the jungle gym and then we had some toasted sandwiches from the restaurant. Really inexpensive I must say but very tasty. 3 other people who had booked for 14:00 were there waiting. They offered to take us on an unscheduled trip at about 12:30. What a wonderful experience. The guides were really great. I think there were 12 different zip lines from the top to the bottom. It took around 2 hours to get through all 12. Some long some short but definitely an unforgettable experience. Oh yes my grandson was first in line and agrees.

Great day out if you love indigenous forest and the birds that go with it. Canopy tour doesn't offer many birding opportunities but the forest is spectacular. Trails from the cafe garden at R80/person (self-guided) are brilliant for birding.... lots of specials. Could spend all day there. Tour guides are very good at what they do on the ziplines, and reception staff are endlessly patient and helpful. Will keep going back

What an amazing adventure for a team building. We had 37 employees attend the canopy tour of which only 3 had done it before,all 37 did the tour and absolutely loved it.Hats off to all the staff as they were brilliant all the way from the first zip to the last one.Even with a large crowd they were very professional and it was a no mess no fuss experience. What a stunning park! We camped in tents, but plenty of people arrived with caravans. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, with dams to fish in, hiking trails to enjoy, and plenty of space to ride bicycles and enjoy a peaceful holiday with your family.

An absolute hidden gem 🏕️ My family and I spent the father’s day long weekend here camping and LOVED it. Beautifully kept grass sites with lovely views. The ablutions were always clean and the showers were hot. There are some lovely trail runs / walks surrounding the caravan park. We will definitely be back.

Lovely views with grassy stands and garden were full of flowers that you could pick for a fee. The tents were not on top of each other. I would camp there again.

Peaceful, beautiful and filled with birdlife. This is such a stunning campsite, endless manicured lawns to camp on under big indigenious trees. All nicely spaced so that if you feel like seclusion, its easy to find a small corner. I camped here for 5nights, 3nights of these I had the place to myself. As a single female not once did I feel unsafe. The hiking trails are amazing, 3 large dams are perfect for birding - saw a bush blackcap amoungst loads of other species and I also cycled everyday as there are numerous gravel routes from there. The owners were the kindest, nicest people - leaving you to just enjoy your holiday but always friendly and willing to answer questions. I will definately return!

A very beautiful farming area and the bird hides are so well maintained. It’s a pleasure to be able to sit quietly watching the water birds at the dam.

Beautiful birding spot. 2 hides at the 2 ponds. If you get lucky, you will see cranes (crowned, blue). Lots of waterfowl including coots, dabchicks, yellowbilled ducks, spurwing geese, Egyptian geese,.... Picnic spot too.

Karkloof Conservation Centre is a beautiful place. The mountains form a background, with an abundance of birdlife at the little dams. There are also hides for viewing. Overall the place is well maintained and clean. Unfortunately there wasn't anyone at reception nor were any of our calls answered. Aside from that it's still a great place to visit.

We always enjoy popping in to do some birdwatching here. The birdlife is abundant and one can see all three Cranes species here. The ablutions are always clean and the hides are well-maintained and comfortable. Thank you for sharing your farm with the public. Please make sure you pay your entry fee.

Lovely little shop on the Meander with all kinds of interesting goodies from Asia. However, the guy in the shop can be rather rude, makes one feel unwelcome with his attitude. We were trying on clothes and this seemed to be a problem for him, we felt so unwelcome we left and were there to spend. Second time it's happened.

Such a special shop...a must visit on the Midlands Meander. I love the sculpture artwork outside and all the great knick knack treasures to buy. My mom and I got matching brass pendant necklaces on our last visit.

Went for lunch at this establishment and my wife and i ordered Herb encrusted pork chop which tasted like a plain fried pork with no flavor,it was super dry, she asked for some of my feta to add to give some taste, the mash did not have any flavor as well and Needed salt just to give some flavor. I ordered the Snoked bacon and avo with feta tramezenni, this had flavor from the avo and feta, the Smoked bacon was just a small piece of bacon cut into tiny pieces of which had no Smoke or bacon because it was cut almost into what I thought was grated flavorless bacon. The waitress and staff were not friendly at all and looked like we were bothering them. I really thought the Piggly Wiggly I saw online would make a statement with their friendly staff and food that would blow us away but alas this is a sorely disappointing experience. I spent more than R450 just on this two meals and a Wimpy breakfast would have been more flavourful and worthwhile. I think if I went back I would just have coffee and leave but doubt I ever will.

I had the battered fish and vegetables. This was a blend dish.No flavor and the fish was not fresh. I asked the waitress for some chilli or peri peri and was given Tobasco. This was complementary. I was told to pay additional costs for chilli or peri peri. The restaurant spends some money for the American product at a premium price. I raised it with the manager and he just did not bother even about the fish quality. I will bypass them in the future.

What can a person say that hasn't already been said about this fantastic place and it's amazing food. A real gem of a restaurant on the Midlands Meander (30mins from Pietermaritzburg). It is in my opinion one of the nicest places to take your family and friends to during the holidays or on a weekend for a lovely meal. After you have had a delightful meal you can visit many wonderful shops and boutiques for the odd ornament, clothing or jewelry item, work of art, handmade furniture and many other accessories. The outdoor environment is clean, peaceful and not to mention very beautiful. I highly recommend the Piggly Wiggly Coffee Shop and the cluster of other shops to visit on your next trip to the Meander. Do not forget to pop in at the Chocolate Heaven for a sweet delight.

We went for coffee and unfortunately had a few disappointing parts to our dining experience. We got a red cappuccino, a gourmet milk shake, a milkshake, a smoothie and a normal cappuccino. My small milkshake was R45 then came in just a drinking glass! My partner got a small gourmet milkshake that ended up being R55 when we were told R45 when the 500ml one was R65 which then also came in just a drinking glass, such a disappointing size then they took an extra 10 minutes to bring out the red cappuccino because they forgot it off the order. Very disappointing trip.

Excellent place and pet friendly for our pooch with a bunch of items to choose from the doggy menu. Great ambience with a roaring fire on a cold wet day. The coffees were superb!! Would highly recommend a visit.

A warm smile and crackling log fire greeted us, including the dog, on a cold summer afternoon. The food was tasty and the portions were more than enough. I was delighted they had a gluten-free option for my toasted sandwich. The menu even has items for dogs so Miley, our SPCA rescue, was treated to some dog biscuits with peanut butter. The coffee was just what the doctor ordered after a long weekend of moving and travelling. Thank you for the great service!

A very small attraction. The museum shows the history of Nelson Mandelas journey, you can see similar experience at the Aparthied museum in Johannesburg, which is so much bigger, however the outside sculpture is quite moving if you can see the portrait, not everyone can. Unfortunately the staff are not firendly or welcoming which is sad. Great for people that love history and want to understand the SA political journey to freedom. If you happen to be in the area, visit it.

The Mandela Capture Site is a powerful tribute, visited with the family and were truly moved by the iconic sculpture of Nelson Mandela. The museum may be small, but the experience is rich with history and heart.

It was informative albeit a short trip. Loved hearing the original audios from key events in the struggle movement. You may pay for just visiting the sculpture or include a visit inside the museum. Loved the sculpture, very creative work from the artist. I do wish they would more attractions to the place. Maybe something to make it more appealing to little children.

The sculpture is so creative and beautiful. You can see Mandela’s face from a specific angle. We didn’t go inside the museum as we went to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, I hear this is a smaller version of that.

Great stop with staff who really add value. At the entrance we got a quick, thoughtful intro to the art piece and the best way to approach it so the portrait “appears” just right. Inside, the museum team answered questions simply and recommended a short loop that matched our time. They even flagged a coffee spot with a view of the sculpture so we could sit and take it in. Friendly, informed, and not pushy—perfect.

The place was nice. For a former history student, it was somewhat something we had learnt, it’s just that you are now looking it through a glass and it’s summarised. I liked the videos on the walls and the car on the entrance. The statue was a bit far from the museum. It was a good exercise. I wish the museum glass was in an upright position and we don’t have to bend to see the words cause it gets tiring.

Great experience. Drive up there on a Saturday morning for a wonderful cooled morning with friends or family. You'll find fresh produce, veg, chicken etc. Normal market crafty stuff too. Marrakesh cheeses, pancakes and music. It's a very chilled and nice vibe. I recommend

Local really is lekker here! You feel the essence of community and unity amongst the stall holders and the customers. There is laughter, chats and smiles from all angles while you walk through the market. Music played by a local busker brings the morning to life as you arrive. The stalls range from books and clothes, to fresh vegetables and local dairy/meat/preserves, to tools and toys, to savoury and sweet snacks on the go like samosas, quiches, muffins and scones, to meals like bacon and egg rolls or pancakes. And of course a few places to grab your coffee! Then sit out on the patio or the grab under the trees and enjoy the morning. You're likely to bump into someone you know or make a new friend entirely even if that is a furry friend. It's mostly all homemade so you're supporting the community. It's an early market so don't miss out if you're in the area.

Lovely relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy a breakfast with a view. Lots to choose from. Samoosas are a must to try as well as their pancakes....and I am fussy when it comes to pancakes!! The nougat was also super amazing, I wouldn't leave before buying some!!

A lovely Farmer's Market, located in a barn setting, with tranquil views over the fields...perfect for Saturday morning breakfasts. A nice variety of stalls, with the farm shop itself stocking the best yogurts and cheeses! And the coffee tastes so much more decadent made with fresh milk from the farm...worth the early morning drive for a visit.

A barn, with Amazing stalls from local talent. The coffee was perfect coupled with stunning views. I was after the wild bread but I received more than I anticipated. I love the simplicity of it all allllloooooootttttt! There are horse rides and kids can run around like children and enjoy their time discovering the nature around them. A must do when in Pietermaritzburg and surrounds!

Absolutely love getting our vegetables from here every week. The stall holders are friendly, there’s great choice and everything is reasonably priced. Car guards are friendly, love the loud music. Grab a coffee and some pancakes and enjoy the view after doing your shopping.

THE GOOD : If you have a 4x4, then entrance fee is a good price, and the park is a nice setup. The Park itself is small about 6km in length and follows a section of the Umgeni Valley, you drive along the ridge of the hill with superb views of the Valley. Recently declared a nature reserve in 2019 and very conveniently located in central Howick with easy access off the main N3 highway. It also offers basic accommodation which is convenient to stay if you are visiting someone in the surrounding Retirement Villages. The park is more suited to the young and energetic with a focus on hiking paths (about six), waterfalls, swimming area's, rock climbing, superb views of the Umgheni Valley, and a view of Howick falls as you drive. This is an animal park so you will also find 5 newly donated giraffe (2024), zebra, wildebeest, blesbok and other smaller animals. There are no big five here. THE BAD : The entrance to the second main game park gate is ruined by approximately 10 meters of abandoned building rubble. WARNING a 4x4 vehicle is required. Driving into the park the road progressively deteriorates and becomes undrivable. The photo shows the earlier good part of the road but it gets much, much worse. Our last visit the road was okay but it has not been maintained. To be honest this ruined our visit. We believe the park reception should CHECK with visitors that you own a 4x4 car BEFORE you pay entrance fee. We were unable to turn around until reaching the Inkonka car park and "The Saddle" picnic spot which is 2km or 33% of the total road. There is almost nothing there, ONE parking space, we parked and walked 10 minutes down a hill and found nothing, no seating, no benches, no facilities. We "think" we reached the picnic spot which consists of a 5m circle of grass with 3 more paths leading away, one trail path, one bush camp, one path to the river. There was no signage indicating where the picnic spot was or how far it was. We did not investigate further and came back up. Not really suited for senior citizens. Additionally, the local community across the valley, on top of the adjacent hill was playing LOUD music and conducting building work (LOUD banging) on a Sunday. The only good thing about "The Saddle" picnic spot that we saw was that they had cut paths in the grass to make it easier to walk.

WESSA is a great place to get away from the city noises. There are many routes to go for walks, but make sure to have a good pair of hiking shoes for some of the hills could be a bit slippery if it was raining a few days before. Prices are also cheap and it's a nice place to go and spend the day at.

If you like your hikes this is the place for you! i do not recommend the hike down to the waterfall if your not sure on your feet, or if your fitness levels are not top notch, this will take you out physically. the variety of animals are great, blou wilderbeest, and zebra are beautiful, but don't get to close. the team at this venue are fantastic in terms of team building and community fostering.

Howick is a georgous place an WESSA a much more. Very kind personal, very qualified people working there and show you so much things about nature. It was a quiet and lovely place. The cottages really great and a good base for tours around. Thanks.

awsome waterfalls. we got to experience it after major rainfall so falls were flowing beautifully. Seem to be fixing up the area aswell and building proper shelters for the people selling there goods. I was expecting a long walk from the parking but you park about 100m from the viewing point of the falls definitely worth a visit

It's OK. Nicer falls by Shongweni. My heart was in my throat for the people doing laundry at the top of the falls. However, there is a splendid array of beaded, stone, metal and cloth souvenirs to view. Decent prices, just negotiate aggressively 😅.

Howick Falls is a truly beautiful natural wonder, and on a good day, the view of the waterfall and gorge is beautiful. The sheer power of the water and the height of the falls are impressive to witness, and it's clear that nature has created something special here. However, the experience around the falls is unfortunately hampered by the general state of the viewing area. There is a noticeable amount of litter, which really detracts from the natural beauty of the place. It's a shame to see such a magnificent site not being properly maintained. While the waterfall itself is a five-star attraction, the surrounding environment brings the overall rating down. This spot has so much potential, and it would be a truly incredible destination if the cleanliness and general upkeep were improved. It's worth a visit just for the falls, but be prepared to look past the less-than-ideal conditions. Entrance is free of charge. Toilets are R2 per for use.

Well worth a visit. The falls are spectacular. Parking is easy and access to lookout is a short easy walk. The water tumbles into a deep gorge adding to the interest of the scene.

We parked up, walked a minute or two, and the view just dropped open—big sheet of water straight into the gorge. It’s louder than I expected. I leaned on the railing, took a couple of photos, then put the phone away and just watched the spray drift across and disappear. You can feel a tiny mist on your face if the wind turns your way. We hung around longer than planned. Grabbed a cold drink from a nearby stall, found a bit of shade, and kept pointing out small things—swallows skimming the water, a rainbow in the spray for a few seconds, that sort of thing. Nothing fancy, no rush. Just a good stop that leaves you quiet for a bit on the walk back.

The waterfall was great. Full too actually which was nice. Love the cute little lines where you can do the lock and key thingy. There's an uncle who sings there too, my friend loved that

Good quick stop, especially after rain when the falls are pumping. The main viewpoint is right off the road, so you don’t need hiking gear. Stalls nearby sell snacks/souvenirs; we found them friendly, not pushy. Downsides: parking can be a bit chaotic on busy weekends, and mist on the railings means keep phones secured. Ten to twenty minutes is perfect. Pair it with the Capture Site or Midlands Meander and you’ve got a tidy half-day.

Caroline is a fantastic host with many interesting anecdotes. The cottage is rustic but spacious including everything you need. The many animals, including pigs, horses, dogs, chickens and a duck provide an endless source of entertainment. The walk to the top of the hill provides panoramic views of the countryside. And it's pet-friendly.

I had an absolute lovely time riding Stormy, he’s such a good (big) boy. Having snacks along the way was quite a challenge but like I said he’s a big boy. Caroline was such a sweetheart and the absolute friendliest person and guide I have ever met, I will definitely recommend Stormy Hill as a nice day adventure with a loved one and I will most definitely visit them again!

Caroline gave a fantastic guided horse ride to my kid sister and her best friend. They both thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I felt comfortable leaving them in her care. You can see that Caroline really cares for her horses and the pack of rescue dogs that accompanied the girls on the ride are super cute. Great experience if you find yourself in the Midlands.

If ever you wish to ride a horse but have any doubts whatsoever, even if you've never seen the horse upclose just give Caroline a ring. Her welcoming and friendly approach will put you at ease... even over the phone. When you meet her for the first time you'll feel like you're seeing your old lost friend. She is friendly yet professional and ensures that safety comes first. She has various well trained horses ranging from small to big for big boys/girls, making it possible to accommodate bigger sizes. On your first ride, her guidance and assistance will make you feel like you've been riding for ages. The scenic trail is... you'll understand my lost of words when you there. Worth traveling to this place for peace, tranquility, friendly company and super fun. Be prepared to be amazed... Had such a lovely day and already looking forward to go back.

So yesterday we went to Stormyhill horses trails🐎🐴. Such a beautiful gem in Boston kzn👌. Most beautiful farm and Caroline the lady that owns the farm was so amazing. She's Covid friendly as she only takes on group of people at a time. You can also take a small snack and have a picnic. We never rid horses before Caroline was so patient with us she thought us whatever we needed to know before we went on the trail🙏. She individual explain to each of us. She's so kind and she has such a beautiful soul❤️. She's always laughing and smiling😊. She didn't just take us on a walk around the farm, She took us on the most amazing trail passing little streams, a tree forest and hills we even saw a jackel🐕. The horse stormy, hurricane, sandman, zabbie, bubbles so majestic🐎. I must say sandman is definitely the attention seeker of them all🐴😎. Thank you Caroline we learnt so much from you and we felt safe the whole trail🙏.. We had so much of fun. We will definitely be back to say in your stunning cottages ☺️😁.

We stayed over in the "bed in the shed" and it was great! Caroline was very friendly and accommodating with our needs, which allowed us to enjoy our stay even more. The room has a wood burning stove which actually makes the cold winter nights something to look forward to!

Had an amazing experience , worth the journey and the trail was too good jammed packed with wonderful sceneries and wild life joy , and my horse cloudy was amazing , calm and had leadership qualities. Caroline was amazing and one of the best guides and thank you so much
