Gros Piton

Mentioned on
+43 other lists
Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Gros Piton is a 798-meter mountain that offers breathtaking panoramic views from its summit, accessible through hiking. The area around Gros Piton is home to a variety of marine life, including pantropical spotted dolphins, Frasers dolphins, dwarf and pygmy sperm whales. Visitors have a high chance of observing these creatures on an excursion with Mystic Man Tours. Additionally, the town of Soufriere near Gros Piton features thermal pools, botanical gardens with Diamond Falls, and stunning vistas.
Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, the island of Saint Lucia is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, and Gros Piton is undoubtedly one of its crown jewels. During my two years on this stunning island, Gros Piton became more than just a destination for me; it was an escape, a source of thrill, and a place where I felt a renewed sense of wonder with every visit. A World Heritage Wonder Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Gros Piton is an iconic landmark that dominates the landscape of Saint Lucia. Rising majestically above the sea, it offers unparalleled views and a sense of awe that words often fail to capture. Whether you see it from a boat, the roadside, or the summit itself, the sheer grandeur of this volcanic peak leaves an indelible mark on your soul. One of my favorite ways to admire Gros Piton was by taking a catamaran cruise around the island. The day-long adventure combined the thrill of being on the water with the serenity of soaking in the Pitons' beauty from every angle. These towering peaks are a photographer’s dream. The scenery is genuinely some of the most beautiful I’ve ever encountered. The Thrill of the Hike Of course, no visit to Gros Piton is complete without experiencing the hike to its summit. I would say that the trail is a moderate hike, but don’t let that fool you; it’s a challenging adventure that rewards your perseverance with views that are nothing short of spectacular. My journey to the top remains one of my fondest memories of Saint Lucia. The hike typically takes around two hours up and another two hours down, depending on your pace and fitness level. Good grippy shoes are a must; while I managed in running shoes, we colleagues did slip a few times along the way. The shaded trail provided relief from the tropical heat, and the railings on the steeper sections offered much-needed support, particularly on the descent. Reaching the summit was exhilarating, and the panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the neighboring Petit Piton were worth every drop of sweat. The descent, while less physically demanding, required careful navigation to avoid slips and falls, making the railings invaluable. A Must-Do Experience For those who prefer a less strenuous experience, Gros Piton can also be admired from various vantage points across the island. Boat rides to Soufriere or scenic drives to the nearby volcano offer excellent views of these majestic peaks. But if you’re up for an adventure, the hike is an absolute must-do when in Saint Lucia. Gros Piton is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a testament to the raw, untouched beauty of Saint Lucia. Each visit left me with a deeper appreciation for this majestic place, and climbing to its summit was one of the highlights of my time on the island. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone seeking a connection with nature, Gros Piton promises an experience you’ll cherish forever. Tips for Your Gros Piton Adventure •Footwear: Invest in sturdy, grippy shoes to tackle the rocky terrain. •Hydration: Bring plenty of water; the hike can be taxing. •Guides: Opt for a knowledgeable guide like Simone to enhance your experience. •Timing: Start early to avoid the midday heat and to enjoy cooler, quieter trails. •Pace: Go at a pace that’s comfortable for you; it’s not a race. Saint Lucia’s Gros Piton isn’t just a place, it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave. For me, it was a sanctuary that offered a new thrill with every visit, and I’m sure it will hold the same magic for you.

Saint Lucia's Gros Piton is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage site. This iconic volcanic peak offers breathtaking views, whether from a boat or its summit. The hike to the summit is moderate yet challenging, taking about two hours each way. Good footwear is essential, and railings assist on steeper parts. The panoramic views from the top are exhilarating, making the effort worthwhile. For a less strenuous experience, admire Gros Piton from various viewpoints or take a boat ride to Soufriere. However, the hike is a must for adventure seekers. Gros Piton is an unforgettable experience that lingers long after your visit.
Connie — Google review
However tough you think the hike is it’s tougher. Rest of the family only made it a quarter of the way up but I managed to make it to the top. The view was amazing and had a welcoming party of a cat and her kittens. Due to some rain going down was very slippery so I definitely recommend renting a hiking pole. I drank a gallon of water during my he hike and it took me around 4 and a half hours so plan accordingly. It cost $50 US for the guide which is required and they take cash and card. Definitely worth it.

Beautiful views. This is the iconic twin mountains that were caused by volcanic eruptions. They are located close to the coast, but you can see them while driving on the mountain roads and enjoy stunning views for miles and miles. Every where you look on this part of the island, you get different views and they are all beautiful. They are definitely worth searching out while you are enjoying your stay. If you visit sulphur Springs, they will give you the full history even though they are not visible from the volcano or the mud baths.
Bonnie S — Google review
Beautiful world heritage site. Just breathtaking! We took a catamaran to cruise around them and had a lovely day. Majestic place with the best opportunity for your Instagram shots. Snorkeling around them is amazing
Rebecca R — Google review
Gros Piton Hike was excellent. Definitely a more moderate level hike. They say it takes about 2hrs up and 2hrs down for most. My husband and I are in pretty good half marathon shape and it had some pretty vertical rock scrambles. I would say its mostly a rocky path so good grippy shoes are key. We managed to do this hike in running shoes but slipped a few times. It took us a little over 3hrs to complete. Our guide was Simone. She was great! She knew we wanted to go a little faster and kept a good pace. The path itself is shaded for the most part. The more challenging parts of the hike have railings. The hardest part was actually going back down and not slipping- that's where the railings definitely came in handy. There are 3 stopping points along the path. The recommended water per person is 1.5liters. You will need your water. There is a shop that sells water and snacks if needed. Overall a fun way to start the day and get in some exercise! View is amazing on a clear day!
Kimberly G — Google review
Beautiful and amazing hike to the top. Worth every moment of the hike. Takes around 2 hours or more to reach the top. Depends on your stamina. You will need to pay and get a local guide to bring you up and down the piton. Bring water for the hike.
Naqib M — Google review
We took a caribbean cruise and the pitons were definitely one of the best views during the trip. We took a catamaran cruise from the port and it was a great view. On the way back it was a bit rocky due to a storm but it was a once in a lifetime experience.

Tet Paul Nature Trail

Mentioned on
+61 other lists
Tet Paul Nature Trail, also known as the "Stairway to Heaven," is a hillside nature trail near Soufriere, St. Lucia that offers stunning views of the water and mountains. The 45-minute walk is suitable for beginners and provides panoramic vistas of the Pitons, Jalousie Bay, and neighboring islands like Saint Vincent and Martinique.
We did this trail with a guide who was very encouraging and had some interesting facts to share. He also was happy to take our photos and knew the best angles. The trail was actually more of a hike than expected, but really not too difficult. Views were amazing. Way nicer views than from the Gros Piton hike. I would bring some drinks and a snack to enjoy at the third view point (by the shed) to really enjoy the views.
Anita W — Google review
A must do to get some stunning views of the Pitons! The hike is fairly easy, but use the guide to gain insight into the locale and support the community. We had Felix take us on our hike and he was extremely knowledgeable, funny, and took great photos of our group!
Nick F — Google review
This nature trail is quite easy to do when compared to the gros piton trail. The views are equally beautiful, from here in fact you get a different perspective of the pitons, specially the Petit piton. At the top of the stairs for heaven it's where you gonna get the wow feeling! Absolutely astonishing. In here there is a small shop, so you can have a drink while contemplating the view. Highly recommended.
Sónia M — Google review
We drove and parked here on Wednesday, Oct 1 around 9:30am. We were the only ones on the hike until we were descending. The cost was $10/pp. we hiked it on our own. The hike is a loop that took less than an hour and easy to navigate. The first 15-20 min is uphill with stairs but mostly in the shade. There’s a vendor at the top selling refreshment and souvenirs but not pushy. The view was gorgeous and hike back down was easy.
Hong D — Google review
A must do hike for all abilities if you are nearby! Gentle walk that only needs trainers at trail is well maintained - and with views just as beautiful as from at the top of the pitons! Easy parking with cute dogs and friendly staff. Guides available, but I went alone - could probably have completed in half an hour, but sat for a few moments of peace at each viewpoint taking it all in!
Eleanor — Google review
This is a nice, straightforward hike with rewarding views of the Pitons at the peak (where there's also a small shop if you'd like something to enjoy the views with). The guide who went with me was knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and even helped me pick out a couple of mangoes from the trail. Would recommend even if you want to take it slow and pause for breaks as the view is well worth it.
Taha Z — Google review
What a magnificent view! The trail itself takes about 1 hour to complete and costs $10 to enter. There is the option to hire a guide, but you can easily follow the trail alone if you prefer. The trail itself winds it's way up the hill and there are a few different points where you can stop and take pictures, but it's at the top where you'll be dazzled by your incredible surroundings!
Ben S — Google review
This is a lovely, straightforward hike with fantastic views of the Pitons and Sugar Beach. It takes 45 minutes - 1 hour to complete, depending on fitness levels. The main trail at the top of the hill (if following Google Maps) is currently closed. There is a free car park there, but the trail itself is roped off. Instead you can follow the sign for the "Tet Paul Community Project" which will direct you left, downhill toward another carpark and hut. Here there are bathroom facilities, you will be charged $10 per person (you can pay cash or card) and a guide will be assigned to your group to lead you through the hike. I would say a guide is absolutely not required for this walk. The trail is clear & simple, it's very difficult to get lost and our guide didn't really share much information or knowledge with us. They did offer to take photographs of us which was nice. There are periods of flat, however at points there are a lot of steep steps. Would recommend for the views of the Pitons, you might even see some cute kittens at the top!

Soufrière Drive In Volcano

Volcanoes
Located in the caldera of the dormant Qualibou volcano, Soufrière Drive In Volcano offers a unique experience as the only drive-in volcano in the world. Visitors can take a guided tour to learn about the intricacies of this natural wonder and its surroundings. The excursion culminates with a soothing mud bath inside the sulfur springs pools, known for their medicinal qualities.
A volcano you can actually drive into? Yes, please! It was such a cool and unique experience. The bubbling sulfur springs, the steam rising all around — it feels like stepping onto another planet. Don’t skip the mud baths — messy, fun, and so good for your skin! A must-do while in Saint Lucia!
Yordanka V — Google review
We loved it so much here that we visited twice. Between a volcano you can drive into, the informative tours, and how amazing the natural mud baths are - this is the ultimate experience. When there’s not a tour there it’s super quiet and laid back, fairly inexpensive too! Our skin still feels amazing, a great connection to the Earth!
Ash — Google review
The guided tour to the dormant volcano was really interesting and our guide was really funny at the same time. The mud baths are definitely a must while in Saint Lucia, nice soft skin afterwards. We did the mud baths first in the morning and then the volcano, just because of the heat and it was less crowded. It was a well spent morning. There are toilets, shower available and a few shops with souvenirs. We ended our morning with a refreshing coconut water. Highly recommended.
Sónia M — Google review
So the Soufriere caldera is along a public road but it's 9USD to enter and have a guide and another 10USD if you want to cover yourself in mud. There were a few too many people there to make the latter an attractive proposition for me but others certainly seemed to be having fun. If you can stand the steep climb up the back there's an information centre with a short video introduction in a choice of 6 languages as well as a small and slightly tired group of exhibits. Definitely worth a visit but it isn't Hawaii....😊
Guy B — Google review
Super awesome. It isn’t a “drive up” the way Americans imagine it. You park, watch a 5 min I go video, then a guide walks you up and tells you about the sulphur springs. Worth it. Not like a drive by thing. Still awesome. Stinky of course. GET THE SOAPS at the souvenirs shop! Specifically the black one.
Lola G — Google review
I love taking people to see this live volcano. When you go, do the volcanic mud bath. Learn about the history, the minerals and what helps this island 🏝 be one of the best places to visit in the Caribbean. I am St.Lucian and love to travel. So I brag about my Island. You must go visit.
VIGuyMike — Google review
They attendants were all very pleasant - the experience was unique - was wild to feel the elevated water temperature in the stream - the volcanic mud bath was incredible - we bought many souvenirs

Amazing place to visit. Its also attached to naturally heated hot springs, where you can have a mud bath in mineral rich mud, and then bathe in the hot spring water.

Had such a wonderful afternoon enjoying the sulphur spring pools. My skin felt amazing afterwards. Would definitely recommend but can get busy if lots of tourists are coming in.
Ang B — Google review
This is a must visit! We visited while on an excursion and loved it so much we went back two days later. The volcano is incredibly cool to see, guides were informative on the history & how the volcano works. The mud bath is so soft and our skin still feels great. A couple vendors outside too. Without a tour there it was quiet and peaceful, absolutely a great time!!
Ash — Google review
Such a unique and unforgettable stop! I didn’t do the official tour, but I was still able to walk through the volcanic area, stop at the interpretation center, waterfall along the way. Being that close to the hot, bubbling springs was surreal; and yes, the scent of sulfur fills the air and adds to the whole atmosphere. But the absolute highlight for me was bathing in the mineral-rich hot springs. I covered myself in the sulfur mud and soaked in the naturally heated pools, which sit at around 100°F. It was heavenly!!!My skin felt unbelievably soft and refreshed afterward. Days later, my skin was still sooo smooth. Like a natural spa treatment straight from the Earth. It was so good, I ended up coming back for a second visit. There are also souvenirs available at the entrance if you want a little keepsake. Truly a must-do experience if you’re visiting the island!
Sidra S — Google review
Such a stinky experience! And well worth it. The mud plastered all over us followed by a hot bath was refreshing and soothing. Wish I lived close enough to do this on a regular basis. Don't miss it!
Seth G — Google review
Guide was very knowledgeable and friendly! When we got to the baths and mud, it was a little overwhelming with the number of people, but we still didn’t have to wait at all. You don’t actually get into a mud bath. You get into the sulfur baths, then right when you get out of the water, you can spread the mud all over yourself. It takes about 10 minutes for it to dry completely. Then they have black mud that you can decorate with or you can leave a tip with one of their artists for them to create a design on you. I was really uncomfortable with someone I don’t know touching me like that, so he offered to just give me black splatters by flicking the mud on, which I thought was very considerate and still allowed me to be a part of the fun! After you take your pictures, you can get back into the hot Springs and rinse off the mud. Our skin was soooooo soft after!! we really had a great time here
Jens J — Google review
This was a really great experience that everyone who visit St. Lucia should consider. We got there around 10am and I strongly recommend getting there early to beat the crowds. My skin feels super soft after the mud bath.
Shelly H — Google review
Our butler at sandals got us a private tour to these springs and a waterfall! The spring is hot, the calcium and mud makes your skin soft! Highly recommend the experience
Trent F — Google review
It was a hot mess tourists trap. Sooooo packed with three little man made pool jam packed with every tourist they could find. I wouldn’t recommend it. We decided to skip it and drink a beer instead.

Located in Soufriere with the iconic Pitons as its backdrop, this site offers thermal pools, a botanical garden showcasing the beautiful Diamond Falls, and breathtaking panoramas. The Enbas Saut Falls provide an opportunity to immerse in the jungle amidst impressive mountains with guided hikes.
Peaceful gardens filled with lots of native plants, trees and birds. Cost $10 to enter for the gardens with an additional fee payable to use the private or public baths. At the end of the trail is a magnificent waterfall which is worth the entry fee alone!

A very beautiful walk through the gardens with a large variety of local plants and fauna. Lizards, hummingbirds and other animals can be seen as you walk through the grounds. The falls and river have volcanic ash/sulphur which give it the grey appearance.

I came upon this place taking a wrong turn while exploring St. Lucia. I love wrong turns in the right places. If you love exploring and looking for a serene inexpensive place learn about the vegetation, fruits, minerals, check this place. Also, bring your swim gear and soak in the mineral bath. I left out bath pics intentionally. You must visit.
VIGuyMike — Google review
Peaceful botanical gardens filled with lots of gorgeous plants, birds and trees. The waterfall was lovely to watch and listen to. There are some information plaques around the gardens, but not many. Entrance fee is reasonable, $35. Cash only. There is a shop selling souvenirs and refreshments, some pools to bathe in (although these didn't look very inviting), changing & bathroom facilities are available. Walking at a very slow pace, it took us 1-1.5 hours to see the whole garden.
Saskia E — Google review
Beautiful botanical gardens, it can be explored on your own or with a guide. There is a good variety of all sorts of plants. It is possible to see the waterfall which has different colours due to the different minerals from the volcanic water. There are mineral baths as well, but not very inviting, as the pools don't have much privacy. Recommended
Sónia M — Google review
If your into nature, this is a place to visit. Not large but has a wide variety of plants, flowers and trees. Has a small waterfall towards the back. Not a fan of the touristy hot bath, that you have to pay extra for, but to each their on. Entrance fee is $7.00 US. You can get a guide, not sure if that is an extra cost or not. I just walked at my on pace and enjoyed myself.

Absolutely wonderful place! Nestled in the rainforest, wonderful garden and beautiful waterfall. We're returning to Soufriere in June and will definitely be visiting the garden and falls again 😁

Treetop Adventure Park is a family-friendly attraction that offers an exhilarating experience with its network of zip-lines, allowing visitors to tour the treetops at a rapid pace. The park provides an opportunity for adventure and fun, with guides ensuring both safety and enjoyment while capturing memorable moments on visitors' cameras. Additionally, the park offers various activities such as sunbathing, swimming, reading, and exploring the rainforest through aerial tram rides and zip-line adventures.
This was a really fun activity!! It's a bit of a work out to get to the different lines (but its wortht it); ensure you take the water that is being given at the different intervals. - When we were done with our tour the guides got a small snake at the entrance. (this is a usual thing for the area) - The tour felt very safe & the guides gave a briefing on how to ride the lines. - The tour guides usually take a phone per group throughout the journey for photos.
Shakira J — Google review
We drove ourselves to the Treetop Adventure park on typical narrow Lucian roads, but we were able to get started right at opening! Great fun with a variety of types of lines within the 12. Our two guides, Ali and Curim, were very helpful, knowledgeable, and a ton of fun! They also took awesome action photos for us throughout the park.
Carrie S — Google review
This was soooo much fun. 🏞️First, we had a small tour guided by Dennis. Despite many of the plants being out of season, he expertly identified them. He was a chill dude 😎 Then, we joined a relatively large group to go ziplining. Apart from the fact that I wish there were more clean glove options, it was great. They're very polite and friendly as they harness you/strap you up. 🌟I had Keenan, he was sweet. 🗣️They're very clear with instructions, goofy enough to make you laugh, professional enough to make you feel safe. 🍃Along the lines, of which there are 1️⃣2️⃣, I met Marvin and a bunch of other really nice guides. The lines all offered something different. Some were close to the water and rocks 🪨 and others the treetops🌴. Some were faster and some were closer to the foliage than everrrr. From the greeting to our exit, which was when I met Zack, another great guide, the experience was ✨AMAZING✨.🦋

Our family of four had a fantastic time on the ATV and zip lines! The zip line guide used on of our phones to take great pictures and videos. After zip lining, we went to a beautiful waterfall to cool off. Then Atv back. Fun day!!!

Castries Market

Fresh food market
Shopping
Castries Central Market is a vibrant hub for local vendors selling handmade crafts and fresh produce, including native fruits such as guavas, mangoes, coconuts and bananas. The market's bustling atmosphere is at its peak on Saturday mornings when farmers bring their spices and harvests to sell. It's an excellent opportunity to engage with the locals while shopping for authentic souvenirs like trinkets and jewelry.
Lively place. Restroom costs a dollar! Possibly bring your own T.P. nice vendors, not overly aggressive, but of course they invite you to look at their stock. . Lots of souvenir options. Local fruit selection is fantastic.
Jeff S — Google review
Market sits on waterfront, nice view of the ship, good selection of local fruit for fair price. They sell in dollars and in cash so it's easier for us when we only have small change. Nice friendly merchants, market not too busy, food stalls opens every other door with small menus, mainly for locals, not for tourists, bathrooms is clean, no cost, we bought some fruits to taste and a few souvenir items for very little price. You just gotta know how to bargain.
Chanbo K — Google review
Lovely local market, with several stalls where the locals sell their products. My favourite is the fruit stalls with diverse types. Ideal place to find local and traditional products. Highly recommended.
Sónia M — Google review
Nice enough place. Lots of stuff to buy for tourists, not much fun for kids.
Nipam P — Google review
Enjoyed stopping here. Lots of locals selling and had a great atmosphere. Went when there were quite a few cruise ships in but didn’t feel too crowded. Went at 11:00 and was still going strong. Lots of repeated produce and touristy things, but loved the food stuff. Look around as different prices on every stall. Great stimulus for a toddler!
Hannah B — Google review
Strolled around here for breakfast and shopping. Got some bake and fish and it was delicious. Just for 5 Caribbean dollars for 3 of us. Had a good time. For shopping prices were way inflated. Got some nice bracelets, hot sauce and local spices.
Mahima S — Google review
Great place to interact with the locals. Guavas, mangoes, Coconuts, bananas etc. fresh and just off the farm. Enjoyed the most delicious fruit breakfast and only £2! I am visiting Creole Kitchen again to taste their delicious food! A bottle of pure fresh natural Guava juice for Rs: 100
Suraj A — Google review
Enjoyed checking out the market, clean place organized and everyone was friendly and not pushy to buy their goods. The locally grown food looked amazing must be the fertile soil. I tried some Black Pudding (blood sausage) from a sweet gentleman named Julius which was so good, best I’ve had in a long time I ended up buying more struck up a convo and just chatted with him for a while. Got some beautiful things for myself and a few friends and look forward to coming back the next time I’m in St Lucia. It definitely worth a trip when you’re in Castries.

Reduit Beach is a vibrant and bustling spot with a narrow stretch of sand, offering various water sports and chair rentals. It's conveniently located near Rodney Bay, lined with hotels like Bay Gardens Beach Resort & Spa and Mystique St. Lucia by Royalton. The beach provides calm waters for swimming and is perfect for families with small children. Visitors can also enjoy the option of renting gear for water activities or simply relaxing while sipping on refreshing cocktails from the numerous nearby bars.
The water is warm and it’s beautiful here. It’s about 10USD to rent chairs, but the guys renting them called us names when we chose not to. People do come up often trying to sell stuff. A great variety of restaurants nearby, especially spinamakers. The splash pad down the beach is also incredibly fun! Definitely a good visit.

Very nice beach the waters are warm and the sand is clean. lots of sunbeds and the views are very good. watch out for the lucky lucky men lots of them selling items and it is a little of putting when you are trying to relax. really enjoyed our time here and we did use the local bars for drinks.
Mark P — Google review
What a beautiful beach! Long stretch of sand that you can walk down or spend time sitting in the Caribbean sun (around 7-10 USD). There are opportunities for water sport activities and there is a bar / restaurant right on the beach if you need to cool off or fuel up!
Ben S — Google review
Reduit Beach in Saint Lucia is one of the island’s most popular and beautiful beaches, located in Rodney Bay on the northern coast. It’s known for its long stretch of soft golden sand, calm turquoise waters, and lively atmosphere with plenty of activities and amenities
Jayme J — Google review
Spinnakers sits to the right of this entrance. It's about 7-10usd to rent chairs/daybeds. The water is beautiful and clear. Safe beach. Water is calm and cool. Plenty parking. Bring a cooler and enjoy. One of the best sunsets Ive ever seen!
Bree E — Google review
Great watersports offers (ring (USD 15pp), jetski (ECD 200), a waterpark (USD15pp ph), chairs are USD10 BUT! the vendors are incredibly agressive and a simple "no thank you" is not enough, so it's very uncomfortable. The swimming area is also very small.
Adel K — Google review
Reduit Beach is a great beach. The water was clean and calm, and we were able to rent chairs and umbrellas. They had people who would come right up to the beach to take food and drink orders, so we didn’t even have to leave the sand.
Juan T — Google review
Visited this beach in August multiple times. It’s very clean, the water is always a great temperature, and it has a undefeated view of the sunset and island. There are plenty of paid activities to book. It’s in a great location, and easily accessible from the Rodney Bay strip. There’s plenty of parking, yet it’s never overcrowded. The salesmen on the beach frequent often to rent chairs/umbrellas, sell bracelets, food, and drinks. They’re respectful and will move on if you tell them you’re not interested. It’s easy to spend an entire day here and not get bored. Perfect for any kind of crowd: couples, families, etc. The best part is the sunset. Even when the sun goes down you’ll find it’s still quite lively with local fishers and dining tourists.

Rodney Bay

Bay
Nature & Parks
Rodney Bay is a picturesque destination located in the north-west of St. Lucia, featuring a large bay with a beautiful white-sand beach and a bustling marina with yacht docks. Visitors can enjoy leisurely sails and explore nearby islands while using Rodney Bay as their base. The area offers upscale restaurants, glossy duty-free shops, and a water park for entertainment.
If you have watched Below Deck you have already been here without realizing it. Those sparkling shots of the marina are Rodney Bay with Captain Glenn sliding the boat in like he is docking a spaceship, gold shipwreck coin necklace catching the sun like a Caribbean pirate who traded his cutlass for Ray-Bans. Walk the docks and you will spot yachts that look like they cost more than small countries. Some of them have actually been on the show. The real trick is you can do Rodney Bay without the TV budget. Here is how Morning: Coffee and pastries at Café Olé in the marina while crews do their morning rinse downs like a choreographed dance. Afternoon: Hop on a catamaran tour. Pick the one with the happiest bartender. They will take you up the coast to Pigeon Island and maybe drop anchor for a swim in water so clear it looks fake. Evening: Seafood at Spinnakers on the beach. Try the tuna and ignore the tourist prices because the view is worth it. Late night: Gros Islet Friday street party with local rum, grilled fish, and music that rattles your bones. This is where Below Deck would fade to black because what happens here does not make it past the editing room. Rodney Bay is the kind of place where you can sip champagne with the yacht crowd or drink Piton beer on the sand and feel just as rich. If you see Captain Glenn tell him the necklace still works and it is part of the scenery now.

We enjoyed our time up at Rodney Bay. We were lucky to have our house right on the water and these were some of our views. Nice marina, didn't seem to have a lot of crazy traffic. Did the Friday night street party which was a lot of fun and great that there are water taxis available to get you to and from. Better than tipsy driving. We enjoyed the Rodney Bay area the most while visiting the island.

Great beach. Lovely sea but can become overcrowded especially when cruise ships are in. Beach traders are a little too persistent for my liking. Bed and parasol can be expensive.

Saint Lucia National Trust is an organization focused on preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the island. It offers visitors the opportunity to learn about local conservation efforts and contribute through volunteer work or donations. The trust oversees Pigeon Island National Park, a northern gem featuring 18th-century Fort Rodney, military remnants, and stunning views of Martinique from Signal Hill.
Nice hike $10 each. Great beach also so bring/ wear your suit. Right next to sandals you can park right at the gate entrance if you come early like 10 am is perfect we walked around and saw the old structures and peaks for about an hour and a half and we’re ready to sit and relax on the beach. Plenty of bathrooms as well which was nice for a beach
Kate S — Google review
Worth a visit if you are in the northern part of the island! Costs $10 to enter which will allow you to learn about the history of Fort Rodney and enjoy walking around the national park. There are great views to be had by following one of the well marked trails available.
Ben S — Google review
If you are visiting northern tip of St. Lucia then do visit this amazing place to hike to ; 1) fort Rodney - lit of history 2) Signal peak - to see the 360 degree view of the surroundings: Carribbean sea, Atlantic ocean separated by pigeon island causeway And 3) Enjoy a swim in the pristine water of the beach inside the national park
Su C — Google review
Wow. Only $10 to get in. Nice piece of history with shaded walking trails. Lots of restrooms. Definitely walk the hike up to Fort Rodney. One of the best views on the island. This place is way more enjoyable than the hot, crowded beach outside the park.
Capt. N — Google review
Beautifully preserved park with very interesting history. We enjoyed spending the day here and had a blast exploring and chilling on the beach. Staff were super nice, entrance is very affordable, chair rentals are dirt cheap. Got to meet the “hustler” (unfortunately refused to sell his “everyday I am hustling shirt”) selling booze from his boat, he might want to update his music album but overall not bad, nice guy all things considered…. Got semi loaded on his questionable mixing skills and found (I think, could’ve been a dream) a golden ring snorkelling. Can’t ask for much more from this life.
Alexander D — Google review
I love this totally unspoilt, non-commercial part of the island. The views are outstanding. We paid our $10 to enter the national park and stayed there most of the day. We walked up to both peaks, read all the historical notes, sat in the park and spent time on the 'private' beach. It is a bit of a climb but doable for most able-bodied people, I'd say. Beautiful, uncrowded and peaceful.
Deb L — Google review
I drove my rental car, which was about a 10 min drive from our hotel near Reduit Beach. It was $10 US per adult. We walk the grounds, went to the top of the fort, which is a nice hike. Then we spent the day at the beach inside the park. The water is calm and so clear! It was a nice visit! I am glad I didn’t book a tour. Not sure there’s enough to do for a tour.
Kim S — Google review
Incredible views of Rodney Bay with informative displays along trails. I was getting married the following day and hiking everything quickly during fiancé’s hair appointment. There are steep stair and rocky sections near the fort and at the signal peak. It would be challenging for anyone unfamiliar with that type of trail. I was particularly amazed by the wide variety of plant life and spectacular blooms on that June afternoon. I highly recommend.

Étang des Salines is a charming spot near La Saline beach, offering abundant birdlife and crabs. Visitors can observe them from a small hut in this tranquil location. The area is well-suited for bird watching and serves as a nursery for marine species, with an abundance of crabs present.

It can get busy on weekends, but visiting during the week or early in the morning allows for a more tranquil experience.

🚨 BEWARE 🚨 - Drive your own/rented car here just as we did. In the case of transport by taxi, local drivers are nasty and can charge as much as 25 Euro. Loooong and famous, sandy Martinique beach with palm trees and no rocks or algae. Just remember one thing to do when the sea tide is low. Otherwise, there won't be any beach left, since the seawater goes all the way up to the trees. Also, generally, restaurants are open just till 3 PM / 15:00.
Mirosław D — Google review
One of the most spectacular beaches on the island. Many spots where you can get a coconut from which you can drink natural coconut water straight from the fruit. One downside, after 5 PM, small flies appear, their bite are not frendly. 🥹However, you can enjoy a stunning sunset from the sunbed.
Loredana L — Google review
This is one of the best beaches in the entire Caribbean. Being on a french island, it doesn't appear in any ranking because most Americans don't end up here. It's a very long, sandy beach with shallow water. Being so big and remote, it never feels busy. You have a big selection of restaurants where you can eat. There's plenty of shade under the trees. If you arrive early, like before 10AM, you can snap some amazing photos.
Dan S — Google review
We visited couple of beaches in Martinique but absolutely recommend this one. It’s Caraibean picture perfect, long enough not to feel crowded and it has showers! Plus some restaurants to eat. All you need is to find a good spot at palm trees shadow and sunscreen.
Andreea M — Google review
A very pretty, Long Beach. It is more crowded than some of the northern and/or less easily accessible beaches. Come early to get a good spot in the shade. The sand gets very hot to the touch at this beach. There are plenty of little snack restaurants/bars, but they close around 16:00. I walked to the end of the beach and continued into the woods. There are some small, more deserted patches of beach along the path, however I should note they have more nudity than the main beach does! Still highly recommend the walk.

La Savane des Esclaves is a historical museum located in Les Trois-Ilets, Martinique. The site features a re-created 'free' village of former enslaved people from around 1800. Gilbert Larose, the creator, has a deep fascination with his ancestors who were 'Neg'Marrons,' enslaved individuals who escaped plantations to live freely off the land.
We loved our visit though it was intense. The site is so beautiful and it does truth telling of the ugly colonial past. The message of the founder is one of reconciliation. As a visitor to Martinique it really helped me connect with the deeper layers of its history.
Samantha S — Google review
We left the exhibition a bit underwhelmed. While we can appreciate the work that was put in, the visit was a bit disappointing, and lacked sufficient details. The gardens were lovely though, but very steep and didn't offer much shade. We also noticed that they were no benches to sit on. Overall, we feel like the price may be too high for what you actually get. (12 euros/ person)
William F — Google review
Though staying much further north, we visited this museum on the recommendation of our hotelier. It was a moving and very informative visit, and I was surprised the tranquility in the gardens. The introductory video is a must. Presented by the founder of the museum, it provides a clear explanation of the history of the people and immigrants who came to Martinique, the history of slavery and life after slavery. In fact, it is a foundation for everything that follows. Everything is presented in French and English, including very clear subtitles on the video. Give yourself at least 90 minutes to visit here. Walk around the site brings the video to life, and the gardens themselves are beautiful. Very welcoming staff. Don't miss this experience!! Thank you.
Caroline W — Google review

A must have for those who want to know the history of Martinique. We spent here 2,5 hours. I recommend you start with a video which is shown every 15-20 min. It will give you a good overview as well as the context. It was much easier to later explore the expositions, knowing what part of history it was related to. Definitely read all those billboards. They have fascinating facts, really interesting. Be aware, that there's no internet connection. Their WiFi is not working, as well as there's no cellular data. Both of my SIM cards (local and a foreign one) had no connection. So if you come with someone else, agree on the meeting point. PS: All info is available in both French and English languages. Video is in French, but has English subtitles.
Inna G — Google review
We totally recommend this place. La Savane des Esclaves is very beautiful and well maintained place. It combines slavery museum with tropical garden and village of Carib Indians and houses used after abolition of slavery. You will gain a lot of information and you will be amazed by beautiful nature. Don't forget to get a drink from fresh fruits. Check the opening hours and enjoy the beautiful road here as well.

Anse Dufour is a picturesque beach located near Fort de France on the southwest coast of Martinique. The simple white-sand beach offers opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and boating. The nearby fishing village adds an authentic touch to the area, allowing visitors to observe traditional fishing techniques. This idyllic spot features swaying palm trees and azure blue waters, making it perfect for relaxation.
Wow. Great snorkeling over a small reef with many fish. Then we found the turtles. Fantastic. Two points, it gets busy and you have to park on the hill side road approaching the beach. It's a long walk back. But it is worth it. A must do

Enjoyed a lovely day at the beach with fine sand and crystal clear water! There are plenty of shops, restaurants and public toilets around. A public parking lot is available for the maximum of 12 €/day.

One of my top spots in Martinique. If you are visiting in high season, then you should go as early as possible as this is a small beach. Get lost snorkeling in coral area on the right side, with plenty of sealife, sponges, chimneys... also a lot of turtles. Please do not disturb the turtles (and sea life), we are in the invaders in this natural spot, just observe and enjoy. Unluckily tourism has made an impact and there are not as many turtles as it should be.

Nice beach, not toooo busy if you get there before midday. Visibility for snorkelling is pretty good, much better than anse noire. Saw a turtle!!! Very shallow.. Lots of fishes! Beware of stingers, theres a few and can be a bit of a surprise if you're not expecting it. Free parking if you can find a space!

We saw a sea turtle here in early afternoon on two different days. It’s a beautiful little cove with less of a climb down than Anse Noir. There were jellyfish in the water the second time we were there. Parking can be rough.

Five stars for the opportunity to see green turtles, don't come to the beach without a snorkel gear! Sad however that many tourists does'nt follow the rules and respect the turtles privacy. Beside the snorkel, there is not much too it, the beach is small and I have seen better ones on the island. Resturants available, parking can sometimes be a nightmare.

Anse Noire is a captivating black-sand beach nestled in a snug inlet, attracting scuba divers and snorkelers with its calm waters and vibrant marine life. Visitors can rent canoes for picturesque coastal voyages or descend 156 steps to reach the volcanic shore. Surrounded by lush palm trees and rocky slopes, this secluded beach offers a wild ambiance, making it an essential stop for those seeking an authentic tropical experience.
A fantastic little bay in which to anchor. Can get busy but on a quiet day is so tranquil. A black sand beach and fantastic snorkeling with turtles.

A pretty spot with a long stairway down to the water. There is a kayak rental place. The day we were there, the water was unfortunately murky and dirty, and full of jelly fish.
Carrie — Google review
Beautiful beach! Few fishes around but we didn't see any turtles. There were absolutely loads of little stingers in the ocean.. Particularly bad each side of the bay by the rocks with all the fish. Not sure if its seasonal but weren't aware at all of it. Anse dufour, the beach on the other side had a couple but nowhere near as many! Just beware!!!
Sarah S — Google review
I strongly do NOT recommend this beach. It looks intimate and there’s not as much people as in Anse Dafour but that’s probably because it’s dirty - feces included. The water is not as clear as in other bays nearby and the beach is stony. There’s no proper car park near so the road is crowded - you have to leave the car far away and go down in full sun. After being disgusted by the beach and going back to car - be prepare for a very long hot walk uphill without any shade. The worst beach in Martinique I have been to so far.
Zuzia N — Google review
Beautiful! The black sand glitters in the sun, what a spectacle. There are steps to go down to the beach, between 5-10 mins.
Paola M — Google review
Amazing beach. It's the little sibling of Anse Doufur, but with black sand. You will find shade but not in the afternoon because the sun sets directly in front of the beach. Sometimes you can see turtles here as well, and there is a livelier underwater scene than in Anse Dufour. Make sure to check out the pelicans and the way they fish!

Ok you have to go their, but please, take a trash bag and take all as much as you can all the stuff on floor or in the water. Tourists/local are pigs and unrespectful. The worse is the boats guys. They come in bay with motor, stopping as close as possible, afraiding the fish. Come before 9am (time of boats coming) or you will see almost nothing. The local government definitely has to strict rules for those stupid guys

(Translated by Google) Dear Travelers, I stayed at Domaine des Fonds Blanc in February 2023 and was the victim of a scam by the owners Pierre-Jean Gouyer and Coralie de La Houssaye. Summary of the facts: Having already stayed there with a group of friends in 2019 and being originally from Martinique myself, I decided to return there to visit my family as I do regularly. Also, it is important to point out that the estate includes 2 villas: Villa Coralie, the smallest, and Villa Isabelle, larger with 9 bedrooms. In view of the information displayed on their website, the 2 villas offer relatively similar services (each villa has its own swimming pool, its private pontoon, can accommodate a chef, etc.). Needing only 3 bedrooms, I booked Villa Coralie. My only request being that I would like a chef at home for the duration of my stay. However, a few days before my arrival, the owners tried to convince me to rent Villa Isabelle by mentioning an alleged lack of space for the services of the chef I had reserved. This goes against the information provided on their website, which guarantees this service regardless of the villa chosen. I don't follow up on their proposal, seeing no point in paying more for additional space that I don't need. Finally, the day before my arrival, the concierge of the Domaine des Fonds Blanc sent a message to confirm that I would finally be "upgraded", understand here that I will have the large villa at the price of the small one, which obviously poses no problem for me. problem (quite the contrary!). When I arrive at the estate, I discover that the Coralie villa that I had initially rented is already occupied by a charming couple of North American vacationers. No need to draw a picture of the malicious plan that the owners were trying to pass off here, I find it rather dishonest but don't say anything because in any case I won't pay extra. On my return to Dubai, my amazement was immense when I discovered that my security deposit had been reduced by 3,250 euros. The owners claim that this sum corresponds to the difference in price between the two villas; but i) not only have I never given my agreement to pay more for another villa (I have a contract for Villa Coralie only) and ii) their own contract prohibits them from deducting any price difference on a return of security deposit. Faced with this unfair situation, I ask for more explanation. From then on, Coralie de la Houssaye showed a lot of courage and disappeared from traffic, responding neither to calls nor to messages. I now speak with Pierre-Jean Gouyer who informs me that after reviewing a mysterious invisible file he unfortunately cannot give me my money back. According to his file, I would have said upon my arrival that I was happy with the large villa, which obviously gives him a legitimate right to keep my money! he then offers me a credit towards my next stay in their exceptional villa. And yes... This gentleman does not lack humor! I therefore want to warn you against these unscrupulous owners who believe themselves to be above the law, in addition to having a very keen sense of business (stealing a few thousand euros from a recurring customer who brings back around ten on each visit, well done champions!). These people are not interested in giving you a memorable tourist experience but just there to bleed you to the last drop in order to maintain a space that they clearly have difficulty taking care of. Habitation Clément, located near Saint Francois, is a historic rhum distillery that originated as a sugar plantation. Founded in 1887 by Homere Clement, it is renowned for inventing Rhum Agricole, a distinctive style of rum made from sugarcane juice. While the production now occurs off-site, the original distillery buildings have been preserved as a museum showcasing the rum-making process. The estate also features beautiful gardens with modern sculpture collections and contemporary art exhibitions.
We greatly enjoyed our visit. Self guided tour around the beautiful property with an audio app that you download. Download the app prior to leaving the building. Parking is free and plentiful. We spent about 1.5 hours doing the self guided tour and tastings. Our daughter enjoyed the grounds and different sculptures. To note, This property is not a functioning distillery, rather the old distillery is on display. We only visited this distillery on the island. There are plenty to choose from though.
Sheldon B — Google review
We had a wonderful experience at Habitation Clément! We took the guided tour for €22, which not only gave us fascinating insights into the history and culture of the plantation, but also included a delightful tasting of various rhums at the end. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, providing us with a thorough explanation of the estate’s history, its production of rum, and the role it plays in the local community. We also got to see the old distillery, though it’s important to note that rum production is now done in the north of the island, while Habitation Clément focuses on barrel aging and growing the fruit used for making the rhum. I highly recommend visiting earlier in the day, as the grounds are vast and offer plenty to explore. We took the 4 p.m. tour, but we felt like there was so much more to see. The property itself is beautiful, with lush gardens.

It is a Rum Plantation, need I say more. This all was started by a physician named Homere Clement in 1887. After Charles Clement perfected and bottled the rhum agricole, it was exported to France in the 1940’s. They have plaques all around the place explaining what you are seeing. You even have the ability to see where the politicians met here like President GW Bush and Mitterand. With our tour group, we ran through the plantation in about 30 minutes. There is plenty to see, so if you are on your own, then expect a little longer time to take it all in. I loved the Rum Barrels as you could smell the yummy goodness. It really is interesting seeing the olde parts of the facility that is used to make the Rum. They even have sugar cane farms nearby. Though most of the Sugar Cane is gathered by machine, a small percentage is done by hand for those special rums. Near the end of the tour of the place, you enter a building where you can smell the aroma of the rum notes. There was a door open next to each station. Inside you would find what rum you were smelling and a recipe card for using it for a mixer. We were provided with a tasting and I wish I could have gotten more to take home. The store had a large selection of what they sell. Some of them even had real fruit in the bottles. I wanted the Elixir (high end), but I was only allowed the Creamy Vanilla [think Baileys with Rum]. It does make it a pain that you are limited on how much alcohol you can bring back from overseas 🥺

Did self guided tour on a Friday morning and although place seem very busy, walking tour was very enjoyable. Great history of Martinique rhum and Clement family. Really enjoyed rhum tasting at end of tour. They let you try every rhum they make, including expensive ones. Ended up buying a couple of their pricey bottles, which was a great move, because they were more expensive at airport duty free stores.

This was my absolute favorite. This distillery in a beautiful complex breathes its history on you. Extensive grounds with beautiful gardens, a painting exhibition and a gorgeous house decorated in the traditional Caribbean style of a bygone era. I was fascinated and had to go through the whole thing twice. Their rum tastes wonderful. This distillery is definitely not to be missed!
Honza N — Google review
It worth seeing due to magnificent garden with sculptures, lovely old authentic villa, nicely furnished, which will take you back into atmosphere of old times. There is a center of Modern Art here with different exhibitions and also the factory for producing rum where there are represented all stages of rum manufacturing. For 10 euros ticket you will get an audio guide telling the story of this property making high quality rum and also free tasting of drinks at the shop.
Natalia D — Google review
This is a very fun Rum distillery to visit. I am unsure of the cost of the tours or the actual rum, because when I visited it was a holiday for the island and they offered free self-guided tours, and a large amount of samples. Right outside the building there is an amazing outdoor viewing or museum of sculptures and art. The entire building and its surrounding is very well maintained and a great spot to relax. After your tour of the distillery, there is a gallery of art around the corner. I was not expecting to view all of a distillery, art, and a museum of sculptures at this single location. It is a self-guided tour, and they have bulletins that provide information in different languages, including English. My favorite part of the tour was being able to explore the barrel aging buildings. The Barrel rooms gave off an amazing scent that I just want as aftershave! During the venture of the tour, you will learn how they used to make rum with old school style tools, and the way they make rum today. They have a large selection of merchandise, and rum you can purchase. The tasting room is pretty packed, but the bartenders know a variety of languages!

Jardin de Balata is a botanical garden in Fort-de-France, Martinique, featuring exotic plants from around the world. Established in 1982 by horticulturalist Jean-Philippe Thoze, it boasts 300 different palm assortments and a stunning backdrop of the Carbet Mountains. The garden showcases a vibrant array of tropical flora including hibiscus, begonias, lilies, ginger blossoms, and heliconias.
The Jardin de Balata is a truly stunning botanical garden, beautifully designed and wonderfully located in the lush hills of Martinique. The variety of tropical plants and flowers is impressive, and every path offers a new scenic view to enjoy. For hummingbird enthusiasts, this garden is a true paradise — there are excellent opportunities to observe and photograph these magnificent birds up close. A visit to this tranquil and well-maintained garden is highly recommended for nature lovers and photographers alike.

It is an amazing garden. Entering the garden, it seems like you are in paradise. The flowers delight your eyes with their colors. The fish charm you with their undulating movement. For thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, there are suspension bridges where you can see far into the distance, the Caribbean Sea framed by towering palm trees. Huge bamboo trees line the paths in the garden. You will hear a lot of bird calls (if the chatty tourists keep quiet, which is unlikely). When leaving the garden, you could see the hummingbird. They drink the syrup specially prepared by the caretakers. It is recommended to visit it. The price is 16 euros but you can leave 1-2 euros extra for the garden.

Very nice garden. Short to visit however. Count 1h if you take your time. 13 Euros per person. Value for the price is debatable, but depends on each individual taste I suppose. Cool activity to fill a gap of 2-3h (when counting the time to get there if you are in the southern part of the island and coming back). It's roughly a 20-30 min drive from downtown Fort de France, and +-1h from Trois Ilets. Would not judge this as a must do in Martinique. It's a nice, time killer if you need one.

Check it out - the site is well worth a visit! Entrance fee is 8 Euros (reduced 5 euros). It takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to cover the entire site. There is a free audio guide - we recommend it.

The place is gorgeous but it is just ruins of the old chateau. They give you a device that explains a lot of things about the site, but everything was very technical. I wished that they could explain more about the people that lived there (slaves, settlers, etc.) and why the chateau existed there. We hiked the Caravelle trail, which is just next to the chateau. I would recommend doing this instead of visiting the chateau since you will get the feeling for the place without having to pay the entrance fees. *You should plan to arrive early because there is not much shade and bring at least 1 1/2 liter of water per person.

Surprisingly good zoo for a small Caribbean island. The price is high (€17.50/pp), but it is larger than it looks from the road. Don't expect any large mammals, but they do have two large cats (a black jaguar--I've never seen one before ever--and a puma/cougar) and a variety of monkeys. The grounds are interesting as well, since it is the ruins of a former sugar mill and rum distillery. Some beautiful flowers on the grounds as well. Takes about an hour and a half to two hours to walk through. You can walk here from St. Pierre, but there are some spots where there is little room to walk along the highway. Take the second road in from the beach (not the first one as suggested by Google Maps) for a better/wider sidewalk. Click Helpful below if this review has been of help to you.

Very beautiful zoo. Lots of animals - jaguars, flamingos, crocodiles, parrots etc. However, the cages are way too small for this amount of animals. Not much freedom for them. Otherwise I enjoyed my visit . However, you can buy a ticket for Jardin de Balata and the Zoo just for 2eur difference. This was not mentioned!
Deimanciukas D — Google review
Amazing! It is quite large. Almost 1 hr to complete. The map is very handy. follow it! Staff is friendly. Ask for the ticket that allows you to visit both jardin de balata and the zoo.

Wonderful spot to enjoy the exotic atmosphere of the island and to spend time with the kids.
Natalia L — Google review
Great little zoo in the ruins of an old rum distillery. Entrance fee is 17,5 euros. They have signs in French and English. Cool little exhibit on pirates at the end as well.

A great place to take the kids when visiting Martinique ! The zoo is well maintained…
Sania A — Google review
The zoo is an excellent attraction for families in the area. The grounds, wow, the park is located in a tight Valley and they worked there enclosures within the ruins of Saint Pierre. There is a wide variety of animals, but become they a more free to roam in larger enclosures they can be difficult to see sometimes. But honestly the most impressive thing is the landscaping. Incredible. Worth to the visit!
Jonathan J — Google review
What a great zoo, was surprised by the amount of different animals actually on show , it's set in beautiful landscape , it reminds me of Jurassic park and you half expected a t rex to come bursting through the rainforest , it was a organised trip while on a cruise , just wish I could have stayed longer

Distillerie Saint-James et Musée du Rhum

Tours
The Distillerie Saint-James et Musée du Rhum has a rich history dating back to the 18th century when its rum was exported to New England. The brand, named after a prestigious family in the UK, used square-shaped bottles for efficient transportation. In 1974, the distillery moved to Sainte-Marie for proximity to sugar cane fields.
Great tour to go on. Just remember the tourist train doesn’t run on Mondays. Free tastings. Lovely old distillery copper machinery to view
Francois B — Google review
Actually fairly disappointing. Tours are only offered in the mornings and the staff were actually a little rude informing us of this. You can still visit the museum but not the working distillation plant. We had a much nicer visit at other distilleries that were still open in the afternoon. The gift shop was open but only full sized bottles are offered.

We took the train ride which was nice but nothing spectacular and geared toward adults. Full transparency it probably would’ve been better if I understood more French. Nevertheless, I gathered that it was mostly about the flora and fauna of Martinique versus about the Saint James Distillery. That might have been nice, but we were spoiled by the private tour we had at Rhum JM. The overall Museum of Distillation was cool, offering a view of their bank vault with old vintage stock pile of rum from the 1800s. I enjoyed learning more about the Saint James marketing. At the maison, the upstairs Saint James museum was interesting but only took a few minutes to peruse. Finally, the tasting room was the least experiential of the distilleries we toured: the staff was absolutely friendly but didn’t get into the detail of the notes of the rum and how it’s processed (all things to which I’m interested). Nevertheless, the prices of the rum sold were some of the best compared to the grocery store.

It's a beautiful place, reminds me of footage from Django Unchained. Excellent rhums at reasonable prices. Very interesting historical pieces of distillation equipment.
Jan D — Google review
Visited Martinique many years ago (1991 it's about time I returned) and visited several rhum producers including St James. St James is still my favourite rhum. 100% from sugar cane. You can just smell the cane. Rich and clean. Even better drink it straight or superb in coctails, a Martinique Planters Punch, Ti Punch/Caipiranha etc., Rhum Agricole is the very best.

Mt Pelée

Volcano
Nature & Parks
Mount Pelée, an active volcano located on the northern side of the island, offers challenging hiking trails that attract adventure travelers and experienced hikers. The 4.7-mile L'Aileron Trail leads to the crater rim, providing stunning views but requiring caution due to rock scrambles and slippery terrain. Hiking early in the day is recommended to avoid heat, with ample sunscreen and water essential for hydration.
Amazing Experience at Mount Pelée! as a solo female hiker. PS I am not a professional hiker. I absolutely loved my hike up Mount Pelée. The trail is listed on Google as a 1.5-hour route, but in reality, it took me around 5 hours to complete. I tackled Refuge 2, and 3, including the Boucle de la Calderia. Initially, I planned to go only as far as Refuge 2 and turn back, but after reaching it, I still had plenty of energy (though I hadn't considered that I'd need to descend as well bahaha). The route from Refuge 2 through the Calderia to Refuge 3 took about an hour. The path, highlighted in cream or yellow in the photo, is a mix of flat terrain and rock climbing. There are some steep climbs, and the terrain is very rugged, with ups and downs before you reach a point near Refuge 3. From there the is a part that heads to refuge 2 which is a climb as well. But once this is done. it's all downhill back to Refuge 1 (where the parking lot is). I started around 11 AM and completed the hike by 4 PM. By the time I reached Refuge 2, I noticed that most other hikers were already heading down. I felt a bit nervous walking alone, especially as I hiked through the Calderia, surrounded by clouds with no one else in sight. The most challenging part was the rock climbing. Some of the rocks were larger than me, and while the ascent was challenging, the descent was tricky and slippery, especially since the path was wet and muddy (fortunately, it didn’t rain that day). I didn’t take many breaks, as I was worried about getting stuck at the top after dark! I decided not to attempt the final stretch to Le Chinois because I was hiking alone and wanted to make sure I descended before it got dark. For this hike, I recommend wearing a good pair of shoes (preferably hiking boots), long pants (I wore shorts, which wasn't ideal), bringing some snacks, and plenty of water. It’s a beautiful but demanding hike—be prepared for a full day of adventure! Would not advice to go during rainy day. Good luck

pro tips: - some parts of the trail can be wet and the climbing stair surfaces waterlogged, so wear waterproof hiking shoes. This is not a short hike to be done on sneakers - this is cloud height so it can get wet, bring protection from water. An umbrella works - There are very good grocery stores in the village close to the trailhead, get snacks and water. 2 L per person The views from the top are well worth it. And the lush flora on either side is beautiful.
Rajkiran N — Google review
Take plenty of water and do all the trails. You won't regret it. We were hiking for 9 hours.

What an amazing thing to accomplish! Rain or shine. It’s a tough hike, and if you fear heights, be brave..lol 🇨🇦 The best views ⛰️
Niel B — Google review
Nice hike, a bit difficult. Sore muscles afterwards - we didn’t see much at the very top due to clouds, but the journey was nice. I liked the Boucle part the most.
Maryam L — Google review
Go early. Free to hike you do not need a guide the path is well marked.bfree to park parking fills us fast then people park along road. Check weather before hike if you want a clear view once at top. DNT touch any insects you may find bc they are poisonous. Bring water and food.

No Experience; but 1902 Eruption was a Vesuvius-style Pyroclastic Cloud "Avalanche"; Damaged and Destroyed Ships in The Harbor, and destroyed The Town of St. Pierre. Death Toll was estimated at 30,000. Pyroclastic Cloud killed everyone on the land; with two exceptions: A man, locked up, deep, in the City Jail, and a woman, who miraculously survived; everything combustible was set on fire, and people aboard ships in the Harbor said, outside of sounds of burning fires, and Rum Casks, exploding: there was no sounds, on shore. On the Freighter "Roraima", one sailor saw the cloud "leaping down the Mountain", and covering the Town, and ran for the Engine Room. Moments later, The Cloud hit the Freighter, and almost "turned it, over"; all smokestacks on the Freighter, were cut off; as "cleanly, as if they had been"cut with a knife'".

The 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée was a volcanic eruption on the island of Martinique in the Lesser Antilles Volcanic Arc of the eastern Caribbean, which was one of the deadliest eruptions in recorded history. Eruptive activity began on 23 April as a series of phreatic eruptions from the summit of Mount Pelée. Within days, the vigor of these eruptions exceeded anything witnessed since the island was settled by Europeans. The intensity then subsided for a few days until early May, when the phreatic eruptions increased again. Lightning laced the eruption clouds and trade winds dumped ash on villages to the west. Heavy ash fell, sometimes causing total darkness. Some of the afflicted residents panicked and headed for the perceived safety of larger settlements, especially Saint-Pierre, about 10 km (6.2 mi) south of Pelée's summit. Saint-Pierre received its first ash fall on 3 May.[3] 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée

Gorges de la Falaise, located near the village of Ajoupa-Bouillon at the base of Mount Pelee, is a stunning natural attraction. The narrow rainforest gorge is flanked by high cliffs and features a river trail that leads to rock pools and waterfalls. Hiking through this area involves a steep descent and stream crossings, with guides available to assist in navigating deep-water sections.
Super cool experience! We had a lot of fun exploring this small canyon within about an hour. Highly recommended if you are on Martinique!

Had a great experience there, our guide was amazing and friendly. Make sure to have quality water shoes and be prepared for an exceptionnal experience. We were a group with age ranging from 7 to 65 and all had a great time. Must do!

It was worth the drive (our accommodation was in the south), 1.5 hour drive. We made a stop to Saint Pierre to conclude the day. The site is quite rugged, and not for anyone with mobility issues or fear of unsteady stairs. The gorge itself was stunning. A very steep decent into the gorge over make shift stairs to where you meet your guide at the river. From there you walk through the river. At times it is up to your chest, with some climbing involved with ropes and ladders. It relatively short distance up the river. It is now 10€ per person, which is maybe a little pricey. I would recommend and do again.

Checked Google multiple times to make sure it was open. Driver 1.5hrs, pulled up and it said it was closed for bad weather. The sun has been shining all day long. Super irritating and waste of time! We were so excited for the hike. They really need to have a website or update Google often

Amazing experience. The guides were very helpful and worth the cost per person. Wear watershoes as you need to walk and hike through rocks in the water and recommenda dry bag as you get very wet. The scenery is breathtaking. This is a must do in Martinique. We did with 4 kids age 9,10,12,15. Younger than that can be challenging.

Place was closed, only open in high season (?) + guide is mendatory, entrance only via the main entry.

Start the trial from George de la falaise parking point restaurant. The hike leads you directly to the departure point of Mount pelee (refuge restaurant- the only restaurant in highest peak point) in the mid way u will cross many different types of plantations. The view and ambience is mind blowing when u reach the top. If you are lucky enough u can see the view of Mount pelee (if the weather is good without any clouds). Try to start the hike early In the morning. So u can reach back to the parking lot by afternoon. There are different randonne (hike) with different distance. Select one according to your comfortability.

Anse Couleuvre is a secluded beach in Martinique, known for its black sand and lush vegetation-covered cliffs. Accessible through a jungle and river, it attracts adventurous visitors seeking a wild paradise. The area offers hiking opportunities to nearby waterfalls and cliffs, making it popular among nature enthusiasts. With its less-touristy ambiance, Anse Couleuvre is ideal for snorkeling between two cliff points while enjoying the shade of verdant trees.
One of the best beaches in the Caribbean, with its grey volcanic sand and great views. Parking can be very difficult, get there early if you can, it’s worth it

A beautiful black sand beach with a 5-10 minute walk through the trees to get there. There’s also a waterfall hike and another wooded hike. The snorkeling was only okay when we were there, but the water was clear. I saw a few interesting schools of fish. It is secluded, but after 12:00 or 13:00 more people arrived.

Distillerie J.M.

Distillery
Food & Drink
Situated at the northern tip of Martinique, Distillerie J.M welcomes visitors to its lush surroundings. This paradise exudes tropical aromas and is renowned for producing the world-famous Rhum J.M. With a century-old reputation, this distillery stands out for its subtly flavored rum rich in exotic tastes. Visitors can explore the aging process of rum, which imparts distinct flavor notes through various types of wooden barrels, some previously used for aging other spirits.
By far the best distillery to visit on the island if you want to find out more about the making of rum! Loved the thoughts, the explanations, and the attention to detail of the free non-guided tour. Get carried away by the smells of vanilla, tropical flowers, and sugar cane right before you enter the tasting room. Very highly recommended!
Kat K — Google review
Distillerie J.M. One of the most stunning views of a distillery I have ever been to. I could not get enough of the pictures and the location of this distillery. It almost looks like it is at the bottom most part of the volcanic mountain, with a couple of creeks that run through the building. The building is filled with mango trees, beautiful humming birds, and a handful of flowers (which I wish I knew the breeds). They have a very large barrel room where they cast their rum, and the smell for the barrel room is to die for. The tour is a self-walking tour and they have some interactive smell and taste portions of the tour. I do recommend getting a couple of bottles for the trip back home because their rum is good. I highly recommend the XO bottle but they were all good! There is a lot of parking and enough seating for a large group. The entrance to this location can be easily passed if one is not careful. The employees are very nice and welcoming. They do offer some samples so the customer knows what they would like to purchase before making it. Great location, must stop. Cheers Martinique!

Absolutely gorgeous We went with a group during our Buggy Quad tour and it was amazinggggg. The staff was so welcoming and attentive. I took videos of everything, sadly I can't share those here.
Kyshawna F — Google review
There’s a lot to like about this place but a general caveat that JM is pretty focused on the rum and less about the extras (art museum, sculpture garden etc)like Clement. That said, the location is beautiful; it’s mountainous with a stream flowing through it. The information inside the facility is well done, especially the “smelling” room where one can smell the different notes that color the various types of rum. We took a personal car tour with David which was absolutely worth the extra money. He was able to share details about the banana and sugar cane crops, as well as information about the manufacturing. My one criticism is that the rum products were really edited down. One can buy more JM varieties in the grocery store versus what one can buy at the distillery. Also, I would have loved if the tasting servers were a little more friendly, but we’ll chalk that up to my limited French and their limited English. A word of advice: if you’re coming from Fort de France, take the “highway” on the west coast of the island. It’s a beautiful drive and further, it’s not as windy, start/stop, up/down as the middle highway.
