Hridaya Yoga

Meditation center
Spas & Wellness
Hridaya Yoga, located in San Agustinillo and Mazunte, offers drop-in classes and a 10-day silent retreat at its Meditation Centre. The retreat is led by Sahajananda, who provides guidance with wisdom and compassion. Visitors have described feeling safe and secure during their time at the center. Many have reported profound experiences of personal transformation, including finding self-love, improving relationships, generating income, setting boundaries, and dealing with inner struggles.
I spent some time in this school and had the opportunity to participate in a couple of retreats and workshops and they deeply touched me and left echoes that i am still integrating after months. To me, this is a place where the teachings reflect true essence of yoga. Deep, deep gratitude.

This is an absolutely magical yoga community that attracts the most loving, inspiring people to its excellent retreats, classes and workshops, all offered on a safe, enchanting campus with a glorious view of the surrounding beach paradise. I have participated in many morning group meditations, drop-in classes, an unforgettable ten day silent meditation retreat, the first and second yoga modules, and almost six months of the intensive Karma Yoga Program. Let me just say that every day at Hridaya has inspired and challenged me to become a more peaceful, compassionate, loving human being. In my experience, anyone can find encouragement and divine grace in the ancient, syncretic spiritual teachings gathered and transmitted by the school's founder. If you have the least bit of interest in yogic practices and/or aspiration to find more spiritual connection and peace with life, definitely come here and get to know the Hridaya philosophy, which is focused on self inquiry to dive into our deepest, most essential Self. The incredibly dedicated, generous staff, delicious plant based meals, and charming local community just augment the power of this life-changing place! Thank you Hridaya sangha for sharing so much love, wonder and beauty with the world!

I had the privilege of attending the 10 day Silent Meditation retreat at Hridaya this autumn. I'd heard amazing things from many different friends and acquaintances about Hridaya over the years, but never carved out time to dedicate to the practice, but now that I've finally done it...I wonder what took me so long? I won't comment too much on my personal experience, because everyone's experience will be profound and unique to them, but I will say that it was challenging and beautiful and exactly what I have been craving and needing. The center is in a beautiful location, a very short walk to the beach, the instructors (Claud and Iris in this instance) were absolutely amazing - so experienced, grounded, engaging, and present. The lectures and practices were excellent, the food phenomenal, and it felt like a very safe space with a clear, healthy and grounded and non-dogmatic methodology focused on positive virtues and the heart. The 10 days were humbling... and I will definitely be back. I cannot believe how rested at a deep level, and well I feel after being there. I recommend anyone who feels a little whisper in their heart who wants to attend a retreat, to go for it.

LEAVING THE 10 DAY SILENT RETREAT EARLY (BEST DECISION) It feels important to say I left this retreat early and it’s one of the best decisions of my life. I was very curious about a 10-day silent retreat, and while there were some good moments, the majority of the experience left me rather shaken. During the teachings, I felt like I was being told some questionable "facts," and since we weren’t allowed to talk (only write questions once a day), I had no way to question or process them with others. We kept being told that this was a “purification process,” but I didn’t understand, purification for what? That phrasing made me feel like they were trying to convince us there’s something wrong with each person that needs purifying. Honestly, it felt a little culty at times. In the end, I left because I didn’t agree with the teachings. I was being told a lot of things that felt like make-believe. Sometimes the teachers would describe what I *could* experience during meditation, and I know my mind is clever enough to then just create those things. I would have preferred to simply experience whatever came up, without suggestion. I also felt the teachers gave input on things they weren’t qualified to speak on. In a Q\&A session where participants wrote questions, someone asked if they could listen to a downloaded meditation to help with insomnia. The teacher told them not to , because of the “purification” process. Insomnia is a legitimate mental health disorder, and advice like that could genuinely harm someone. That moment really made me question why I should trust these “leaders” on any topic. I also got quite sick during the retreat — and of course, this was explained as my body “purifying itself.” I slept a lot the first two days and then couldn’t sleep at all, which is very unusual for me. I just didn’t feel well there. While I’m sure part of that was due to the intensity of the experience, I think the bigger issue was that I didn’t trust the teachings or the teachers. Everyone was perfectly nice, but something felt off. I truly hope this course works for others, but for me, leaving was absolutely the right decision. Compared to other silent retreats, this one is expensive. I heard that in most other retreats, if you leave early you’re not expected to donate. Here, I had to choose to forfeit the money I paid. They say it’s a cheaper option, which I guess it is depnding on which others you compare it too, but there are other donation-based retreats that seem better to me. This felt a bit like a money grab. Also, throughout the retreat, they kept mentioning (promoting) other courses like, “If you want to learn more, we discuss this in our 17-day retreat…” I found that very annoying. Again, the staff were perfectly nice. The facilities are well located. The food is good.

Believe it that I'm UNDERstating things when I say various courses and retreats I've completed at Hridaya throughout the last 4 years have been: *life changing, healing, connecting, eye mind and heart-opening* ...on a scale and level that I did not realise is even possible. I've completed silent retreats, dark retreats, mens' work, conscious intimate relationship work with them. Including online. All absolute gold. These are NOT only peak experiences like some sacred plant medicine work can be (I've sat with dozens of those too in ceremonial and therapeutic contexts). The changes are much more likely to be long-lasting. In my case, life-lasting :-) Can't wait to be back for more!!!
Szabi B — Google review
Oftentimes when I visited yoga centers I had the impression of receiving a self initiated, commercial-spiritual package to make me paying lots of money. The Hridaya showed me, how a real yoga studio/ holistic center should be like. I had the feeling of getting an insight of how real yogis act and what is an honest attitude towards people that visit the center. And with yogis I don't mean just people that put their bodies in special postures or meditate all day (what they also do ;) ) but just the fact that I instantly felt accepted by the whole community and that money wasn't playing such a big part for making lots of Profite. The price I paid for the module 1 intensive course was super fair and I've never learned so much in such a short time. I felt like I received more than I paid and this is also one aspect of really trusting the practice of hridaya Yoga. The teachers were so autentical and full of love and compassion. They really felt and lived what they preached. The whole module changed the way I am looking at things and I will definitely come back again !

Attending the 10-day silent retreat at Hridaya’s Meditation Centre in Mazunte was a transformative experience for me. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in such a serene and nurturing environment. Under the guidance of Sahajananda, I felt so fortunate to have a leader who exuded wisdom, compassion and the best Humor throughout the retreat. One of the aspects that truly stood out to me was the sense of safety and security I felt throughout my time at the center. The supportive team ensured that every question I had felt welcome, that allows me to fully surrender to the practice without any worries. The food provided during the retreat was not only nourishing but also absolutely delicious. Each meal was thoughtfully prepared and served with love. I recommend skipping the salad, since water is an issue in Mazunte and that can provide from belly pain. Being part of a community of 150 individuals all engaged in meditation created a powerful energy together. As I continue to integrate the profound impact of my time at Hridaya’s, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and peace. I highly recommend this retreat center to anyone seeking a deeper connection to themselves and the practice of meditation, yoga and the teachings of Ramana Maharshi. I will come back to continue, learn more and go deeper. Much love to all of you

*** update: I did receive a refund promptly from Hridaya after sharing my experience. This made me improve my rating. I had an unfortunate experience here. Some background from me: I am of North Indian descent, grew up with my spiritual and ancestral teachings of yoga and meditation. Some history that is relevant: During the British occupation of India, yoga and temple dancing was banned for Indian people- it was seen as barbaric and deviant. The British also stole 45 trillion dollars of resources and commited many atrocities against Indian people including ignorantly drawing a line through the most heterogenous part of the country in 1947. That line caused "Partition" and a genocide of the Indian people. I have been connected to and learning yoga through my family since I was a child. I have been teaching, sharing, and participating in yoga internationally since 2012. I have encountered many yoga teachers who are not Indian that teach in a grounded, culturally sensitive, mature, integrated, trauma informed way. I have enjoyed many yoga workshops from a variety of centers and places. Sadly, Hridaya is not a center I would ever return to. I signed up for a workshop called Flowering of Love. It sounded nice. The first question we were asked after sharing our name was how we heard about the workshop. Then the teacher proceeded to ask which poster was more effective in marketing the workshop. We werent asked why we wanted to learn or our intention. At one point during the day, the teacher made a generalization of men in South India and Myanmar - saying that their second chakras were all out of balance and he witnessed bizarre things in the "East" such as desperate men declaring their love for married women by knocking on their door. I know a lot of Indian men who don't do that. This was an example of subconscious racism. The day was long with 1-2 hour breaks after each session which involved sitting, talking, listening, dyadic work, and group work. None of it was trauma-informed, at no point did the teacher share his educational background, his life experience or his qualifications relating to the content of the workshop, or cite any sources besides Ramana Maharshi's practice of feeling into the right side of your heart- none of it was justice oriented and none of it was very grounded. I felt ill by the end of the day. I had travelled a long way, I was pre-menstrual and I could sense my female ancestors were yelling at me to leave. Why was I paying $350 to listen to yet another European man dressed in white talk about relationships and diluted spiritual teachings to a group of mostly women? It felt so wrong. I had a huge migraine. The cherry on top to this ridiculous day was after dinner (we started at 8:15 and I left sometime around 6:30pm) I told the teacher and his assistant I had to leave because I had a bad headache. The teacher's response was "Ooohh that is too bad, I had a great ritual planned for tonight, we were going to talk about love, can't you join on zoom?" And then his assistant tried to tell me that maybe my headache was a symptom of something. The appropriate answer for any teacher or any person when someone is not feeling well or healthy is: "oh I hope you feel better soon. Is there anything you need? Have a good rest." Instead, this teacher was all about himself and his spiritual pedestal. Look back and you will see other reviews where Hridaya has been insensitive to people's physical health. Spiritual bypassing, passive aggression and cultural insensitivity was my experience here. If you are a South Asian woman, I strongly recommend avoiding this place - they have not done the research and work to know that they are continuing the colonial mentality towards our cultural and ancestral teachings. A lack of ethics and sensitivity is clear. I recommend all the teachers read Susana Barkataki's work or better yet hire someone to audit their diversity and inclusion practices regarding yoga. I feel like I wasted my money. There is a no refund policy, but to pay for this felt so wrong.

The Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga, also known as the Mexican National Turtle Center, is a significant educational and conservation facility located in Mazunte. It serves as a museum and research center dedicated to the study, rehabilitation, and preservation of various species of sea turtles including olive ridley, brown, hawksbill, and leatherback turtles. The center aims to shift the focus from consumption to the protection of local sea turtles.
Had more fun here than I intended to absolutely beautiful landscapes and the Turtles genuinely seemed happy and there was even an alligator. I believe it was under three US dollars to get in as well. Cash only

I've been living here for a long long time and I've always thought this was not a place that I would like, but boy was I wrong. Amazing place, good educational part. Price is good, lots of information and a wide variety of turtles. I would come back to show this to my friends/family.

Great place to take kids, my kid love seeing turtles. Please note this place is more like a rehabilitation center for turtles. Depending on what is brought to the center is what you would see on hour visit. Turtles are released once they are healed from their wounds. Staff is very friendly and it is a great way to help this good cause.
Agustina A — Google review
I recently visited El Centro Mexicano de La Tortuga and was thoroughly impressed by the experience. The center offers a fascinating journey through various exhibits featuring a diverse range of turtles. It’s incredibly engaging, and the experience only gets better as you progress through the exhibits. The walk-through takes about 30 minutes and provides a comprehensive look at different turtle species and their habitats. For just 45 pesos per person, it’s an incredible value. The center is both educational and enjoyable, making it a great stop for anyone interested in marine life or looking for a unique and affordable outing. Highly recommended!

Fantastic. They do wonderful work helping to strengthen the indigenous turtle population after decades of commercialization deteriorated the health of the species. I'm thankful they do this. I'm thankful they share the wonderful turtles & aquatic wildlife with us, the public. Great job!! Thank you

Nice little outdoor museum with many different turtle species. Very reasonable entrance price (about $2.30 USD). Friendly staff. I would recommend.

Punta Cometa, located in the southernmost point of Oaxaca, is a must-see attraction for visitors to Mazunte. This picturesque lookout offers mesmerizing panoramic views of the sea and is a popular spot for watching breathtaking sunsets. The trail leading to Punta Cometa takes about thirty minutes and passes by unmarked ruins, adding an air of mystery to the journey. Visitors can also witness ancestral ceremonies performed by locals against the backdrop of spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Ok ok, i had to wait two weeks to write this review. To stay objective. Beautiful trail that starts from Mazunte beach. IMPORTANT: either wear long pants and long sleeves or have something to be waking the horseflies away. (They’re too many, too much to handle) honestly I didn’t know what to do. They bite in contact and they’re so painful and itchy. Pray 10 pesos to get in the trail. The guns it’s short to get the highest point where the wind is blowing and horse flyers can’t attack you. There you can enjoy of the breeze, the sunsets, and just the contrast that offers the observation of the coast shore from this point. Brace yourselves to get thru the houseflies on the way back.

Worth the hike. Beautiful views. Costs a small fee to enter. Very popular place to watch the sunset.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a gorgeous place to watch the sunset. The views are absolutely breathtaking and unbeatable. But the amount of people that show up is pretty crazy. Like you can’t even take a decent photo because it’s really crowded and there’s people everywhere. Other than that, it’s alright
Gustavo J — Google review
It’s a beautiful place for a sunset, you have to do a 20 min hiking but the view is priceless even though it was little cloudy. I recommend be there at 5 in the afternoon and you can find a good place to sit and wait for the sunset, if you can carry a portable chair, I’ll be better. In the middle of the trail you’ll find a point for inspection of belongings and payment area, the payment is a voluntary amount. Alcoholic beverage are not allowed

Mazunte Beach is a remote beach in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, with four different beaches each offering a unique experience. Playa Mazunte is recommended for a relaxing day of sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying Mexican food. The left-hand side of the beach is quieter and offers parasols for rent. It's important to note that the waves at Mazunte Beach are strong and not suitable for children, making it a popular spot for surfers.
The beach is spectacular with little waves, ideal for swimming. The turquoise blue water allows you to swim and interact with fish, whales, and dolphins. You can bring your pet unlike other beaches in the area.
Sol A — Google review
Beautiful beach with rocky outcrops you can sit on. My 6 year old loved to play in the shallows but my two year old was scared of the waves.
Marika H — Google review
I went there two weeks after the storm hit And you could tell the ocean was still cleaning itself. I didn’t feel comfortable getting in the water, the currents and Webers were very unpredictable. Also a wonder if one of the restaurants mentioned that some ppl had drowned lately. However I had planned to stay for a week, and I did but to be honest, I don’t know why I stayed all this time. I can’t say I enjoyed it so much. I often meditated on a big rock at the beach and that was nice. Not sure I’ll be back
Claudia T — Google review
Amazing!! Good food and a beautiful beach! The town of Mazunte occupies a small bay to the east of the Punta Cometa peninsula. The majority of restaurants, shops and yoga studios lie alongside the main road (route 175) or Mazunte’s busiest street, Rinconcito, which runs perpendicular to the beach. I love this place!
Coucai — Google review
Super chill beach. I loved it. It's quiet not to many people. The waves don't pick up until 12 and settle down around 1600. 100% recommend
Kai C — Google review
One of my favorite beaches on the Puerto Escondido coast. This beach is great because you can really swim here and it is filtered with lots of sun and rock formations that are easy on the eye. There are lots of places to shop and get food and while the restaurant lounge options are limited they are there if you come early to get a seat. The waves are nice and the sand is lovely. It’s dust Next to Zolita and adjacent beaches so there’s lots to see and do in this area.
Heather A — Google review
One of the best beaches in the area. Great for walking and running, with good waves to do surfing, and a really nice cove for swimming and snorkeling. The only reason for not 5 stars is that you are competing with the locals that are fishing in the same cove. There can easily be up to 10 people fishing in the small cove (not sure how long they are going to still have fish there). I would not recommend swimming/snorkeling at the same time all the fishing is happening. Also, be careful of the currents where the surfing waves are, 2 people had to be rescued in the 4 days we were there.

I was in Mazunte for a week. I tried coming here three times and everytime the class was canceled! Twice for yoga and once for a rhythm workshop. All three times the class or workshop was canceled without any notice after I already arrived. The workshop being canceled was particularly disappointing because the teacher was there but I was the only one that showed up and he didn’t want to teach to just one person… I find that a bit rude. They made me wait 20 minutes before cancelling the workshop. I think if one person shows up, you ought to teach the workshop or teach them something. The yoga classes were classes that were on the schedule. They should find a substitute or find a way to reach out to students… they did not. We got there and there was simple no one there and the class was erased from the schedule.

We joined a morning hatha vinyasa class and had a good time. The shala is not so well located. You can listen to the street noise. Also the mats would need to be exchanged for new ones. The teacher was good, and it is still worth coming.

CASA OM is the place to BE, the place to BREATHE 🧘‍♀️ and the place to RELEY. With excellent yoga teachers from all over the world 🌎 ( India, Mexico, Germany, Israel, Argentina).. all kind of different techniques… one can not only practice and improve but also make friends easily, attend also cacao ceremonies, women circle ⭕️ meetings 🫶 and have a cheap and healthy breakfast. They also rent room and always in a very quiet and peaceful ambiance. I felt blessed for having discovered this place and I am counting my days to be back there. Thank you for the love 🫶💖💜🙏

nice environment and instructors - both my partner and I agreed best yoga with Fer this morning. $100p for a 2hr session, cheaper if you do a package. Best way to start a morning - go check out their blackboard when you get here to see what’s on!

(Hostel review) This place felt like home! All because of Monique, she was the best host so motherly, kind and so funny to hang around. Already miss her! The place itself was really cool too, gave me jungle vibes, some would say rustic but I’d say earthy😆😛 - well actually the toilets didn’t work half the time.. the place could do with a refurbish. The female dorm is really comfortable though, and yoga studio is beautiful.
Kerry M — Google review
Was not a fan. Beautiful environment but bring your own mat. The ones they have are falling apart and smell like other peoples sweat. I attended one class and the male instructor was very aggressive in his touch when adjusting. When I stated it hurt he was not empathetic instead responded with a ridiculous comeback…I am used to gentle teachers who don’t push you beyond your limits. He didn’t have great energy. More arrogance than anything else. Would not recommend based on the one experience.

I came to casa om and immediately felt at home. The environment is peaceful and relaxing, the events are heart opening and the teachers are great. There are different kinds of yoga classes and everyone can find the practice for him/ her. I also teach Hatha yoga class and feel big love for the Shala.

The nature is exeptional beautiful, a paradisic spot, the guides are warm, funny, and well- experienced- so that we spent a special time on the Copalito- River, with its moody streams and rapids and the change of adventerous, busy “work“ and relaxing moments of just enjoying, little breaks with lovely food....A must-do if you are around Huatulco!!!!!! Our guide was Sergio. I couldn't have asked for a better guide for a tour like this. His guidance, knowledge and professionalism set a new standard for guidance. Sergio was the difference between an average trip and an unforgettable one. The vivid landscapes, the way the people live, amazing!! An experience I will never forget, powerful and professional!

Excellent tour with Sergio! The lagoon was beautiful and tranquil with many crocs and other animals around. Sergio was very passionate and explained everything clearly and in English and Spanish. Top tip, rent an sun umbrella from the stall opposite their office 👍

We had a fantastic experience at La Ventanilla Ecotourism near Mazunte. Our guide, Sergio, was excellent—he spoke perfect English (having lived in New Zealand) and shared lots of insight about the local ecosystem. What really stood out was the group’s genuine commitment to conservation. They avoid using engines to minimize disturbance to wildlife, which makes for a peaceful and respectful encounter with nature. We saw several huge crocodiles up close, along with a variety of birds and iguanas. It was both educational and beautiful. Highly recommend this tour!

A highly recommended place to experience nature; you will get to see various bird species, turtles, crocodiles and other animals. When you go, make sure to get the tour from the “White Shirts” group; they are the first group you will encounter.

We had a wonderful experience, and immensely loved our evening helping those little babies get to the ocean. It was a great time! Our guide only spoke Spanish, so if you didn't know you had to rely on those around you. We will absolutely be back!

We did the crocodile viewing via a boat ride on the lagoon. It was wonderful. Our tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable and provided us with some rather close encounters with the animals.
Aaron G — Google review
Probably my favourite experience in Mexico so far. The guides are very knowledgeable, the animals are wild and clearly not being exploited. None of the boats have motors on them and are hand paddled so as to protect the area. You get really close to some beautiful crocodiles. Would recommend to any and all nature lovers.

Centro Ecoturístico Escobilla en el Santuario Playa Escobilla

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
The Centro Ecoturístico La Escobilla National Park offers a truly remarkable and unique experience. Visitors can witness the dedicated efforts of the local community, including thirteen families, in preserving and protecting turtle populations. The park provides an opportunity to release baby turtles into the sea, which is both awe-inspiring and heartwarming. It is highly recommended to visit this incredible project that aims to conserve wildlife while also supporting it financially.
I came to this location with a group of college students for a conservation/service trip. Our group stayed on site in the cabins for a week stay and I would highly recommend it! The cabins are rustic but provide great comforts like comfortable beds, ceiling fans and mosquito netting. The service was incredible as our package included on site meals at the restaurant, daily room cleanings and connections with other eco-touristic co-ops in the area. The guides are very knowledgeable and have so much experience with the turtles and local fauna. The turtle releasing's and night patrol were the highlight of our trip. Seeing and guiding the baby turtles in their journey to the ocean was such a rewarding experience. We also got to join in on a night patrol which allowed us to view the momma turtles nesting on the beach and help the guides collect the eggs to be taken to the hatchery. Truly an amazing and once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget! The community here is dedicated to this work and it really shows.

We went at the end of the season so there were only a few hatchlings but it was still such a special experience at sunset. What amazing work this group is doing to protect turtles with little support other than from tourists. We can’t wait to come back in season.
Robyn H — Google review
You may book a tour from Puerto Escondido or go by yourself. Reservation is required. The area is monitored and guarded because of it's importance in protecting the turtles. Going there also helps the organization continue their efforts. Entrance fee as of July 2025 is 200 pesos. Tipping helps the people who work there to continue to keep the place running.
Ana K — Google review
Great experience and an awesome way to help out nature and the locals who have taken on this endeavor. Our guide was informative and explained the release procedures well. Children will enjoy the experience very much (our grandsons had a great time). Time on the beach is around 30 -45 mins. If you do go, opt for the evening release as it limits the birds preying on the baby turtles (too dark or past the gulls bedtime). Also, if you're coming from the La Cruceita area, expect the trip to take up to 2 hours each way depending on traffic. The road is very windy, and there seems to be a speed bump every few meters at times, even on the 4 lane divided portions. Yup you're gonna have a sore backside. We left la cruceita around 4:30 getting back a little after 9:00pm. Definitely worth it.

I don't have enough good things to say about this. We did it as part of an eco tour with Maxi Travel and had Carlos as our tour guide. He was great and so much fun, we loved his stories and views of his Mexico. Sadly we were with a few crusty older people who weren't happy woth anything. This experience was life changing. We all got to put baby turtles on the beach by the ocean and helped make the population a bit stronger. Those seagulls were just waiting to try and eat them but Carlos and one of the ladies who works the Sanuario were waving and showing them away. The Pacific waves came in hard and crashed loud on the beach pulling them out to sea to start thier dangerous adventure. The beach was full of hatched eggs and even a few adult turtles that didn't make it. If you have a chance to go do this, I highly suggest you do... well worth the money which was actually cheap.
Mike F — Google review
Great experience! Highly to Book with the centro directly to get an unique Experience. Guide was in spanish. Reservation in advance required. Easy to reach by local busses. We were very lucky to experience the tour as a private tour and found two large nests where the baby turtels crawled out. Just get in touch with them directly to support this program.

This was such an amazing heart felt experience, the release of newly hatched sea turtles back into their natural habitat I recommend this tour for everyone, check first to enquire about the releases, the beach is some beautiful with a sunset to rival none so bring your camera , fantastic

Cascada La Reforma

Lake
Nature & Parks
We had a thrilling and exciting journey to Cascada La Reforma, opting for a scooter instead of other transportation methods. The roads were filled with adventure, featuring numerous donkeys, cows, and horses along the way. The waterfall itself was absolutely stunning and we were fortunate enough to have it all to ourselves. We highly recommend visiting this beautiful spot.
The rating is not only for the waterfall, which is fairly small but still amazing to experience, specially if you get there when no-one else is there. The rating is also for the vistas you see when travelling to the waterfall, which are incredible in the mountains. Do note, to get there, you can go by taxi, and I would assume some kind of collectivo, or by motorcycle - which I did. It takes 2h from Puerto Escondido, and much of the mountain roads are uneven dirt roads. If you are not a confident biker, I would not recommend driving by yourself, but it can of course be done, it just takes some more time. If you have the time and want to explore outside of the beaches of Puerto, love nature and the stillness of it, then I recommend this day tour.
Daniel H — Google review
Look the place itself is beautiful on a non rainy day. Because it had rained the water was so ugly . I couldn’t let my kids get in. You have to cross rushing water to get to steps on other side. I came many year ago and it was great. The roads to get there now are really really bad. It takes a while because of how bad the roads are. There is barely ever a smooth spot. It is bumpy , areas where the road near the edge has broken off, deep deep holes etc. I drove a SUV with all wheel drive, I would never want to put her through that drive again. We had to get some work done afterwards to get her feeling right again. I wouldn’t go on a bike, my husband said he could see why people might try , ha ha I wouldn’t . . If you got a tough ride ( suv / truck ) you could probably make the trip. They have cabins but do close up at night. Basically you would be alone out there. The gentleman taking 20 pesos I believe it was, was very nice .

Did this with a scooter and we were absolutely fine! Fun, adventurous roads with many donkeys, cows & horses on the way. The waterfall was beautiful and we had it all to ourselves! Would recommend :) We left Puerto at 12.30 and felt a little rushed as we didn't want to return in the dark, so if you want more time at the waterfall, leave a little earlier!
Mascha H — Google review
Amazing experience. One of the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve ever seen. The water is nice and cool. However, be warned, add an extra hour to whatever google maps says and give yourself time to get out before dark. 1.5hrs of riding were on washed out cliff side paths. It also rained on our way back which makes the path very slippery and muddy. We did it on a dirt bike. My partner is a very skilled rider and found this extremely advanced. Not for beginners or even intermediate riders.

Playa Zicatela is a legendary 3km-long beach in Mexico, renowned for its tempestuous surfing waves at the Mexican Pipeline. It's a popular destination for surfers from around the world due to its strong waves, making it not safe for swimming or beginner surfers. The beach is wide, golden, and perfect for walking with stunning sunset views.
Beautiful, long, uninterrupted beach. Perfect for walking and the best for sunset. If you want to swim more then head slightly north to the corner of the beach (past the rocks) where it meets Playa Principal. Here you can swim with the smaller waves

Puerto Angelito is a small, sheltered beach with calm waters that make it perfect for activities like snorkeling and paddle boarding. It is located in a crescent-shaped bay near the town center and offers a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The beach, along with its neighboring Playa Manzanillo, stretches for about 120 meters and features beautiful white sand, clear aquamarine waters, and rocks at either end.

Small pretty bay, but over crowded and with loads of boats mooring. The water wasn't clean because of the boats. No shade unless you want to pay for the sunbeds
Elena * — Google review
Beautiful local beach. Not much room on the sand, due to boats. Crystal clear water and many vendors. Can get busy, but worth checking out. Can book boat tours here very easily.
Errol L — Google review
Spent a few hours here. Although it is a small beach the water is beautiful! I can see how it can get crowded fast since it’s a hot spot for the locals. There’s not much room for sun bathing but if you dine at the restaurant you’re able to leave your stuff there to swim about in the water.
Carol-Marie — Google review
It’s a lovely bay but very very busy at the weekends. At one point there was 5 rows of people in the shallows making almost impossible to enter the water. You can see some fish in the rocks if you are early in the morning and there are many many bars and restaurants to grab food or drink, most are more expensive than the other local beaches. It is nice but go early and on a weekday.
Henry H — Google review
Great for snorkeling, I have only been snorkeling twice before and I didn't need a life vest because the water is very buoyant there. There were a lot of locals there but everyone was friendly. No one minded that I put up my beach tent and flew my drone.

Puerto Angelito is an excellent beach for families with kids and older adults. No big waves, lots of floaties for rent and boat rides. Occasionally you will come across ice cream sellers. 20 pesos is what I paid for and it was well worth it. Very good!! Make sure you throw out your garbage. Puerto Manzanillo is connected to Puerto Angelito via walkway in between and is less crowded. Waves are a little bigger here. Crystal blue waters. There are rocks separating both beaches if you want to explore and collect rocks and shells.

Playa Carrizalillo in Puerto Escondido is a top choice for travelers seeking sun, surf, and sandy beaches. This beautiful bay is surrounded by palm trees and boasts stunning turquoise waters. It's conveniently located near the town center with its restaurants and shops, making it an ideal base for exploring nearby spots like Playa Angelito and Playa Manzanillo. While it may require a steep trek down steps to reach the beach, the effort is well worth it for this secluded paradise.
The most beautiful beach in all of Puerto Escondido. We enjoyed relaxed swimming in the water and surfing the turquoise waves. This is the perfect spot for beginner surfers. Also a great location for snorkeling— we saw lots of fish and turtles in the water. Highly recommend for any visitors!

Good place to chill, strong waves, but heard that other places you can't even get in the water. Be ready to spend some money for everything, even to throw your trash away. Overall, great place to visit for sure, even getting surf lessons.
Edgar C — Google review
Beautiful place to relax. Good wave action but tame enough for a lot of people to swim in. I think I counted about 160 steps or so from the parking area above, so it's a workout. A little pricey to sit under a palapa. A lot of surfers come here.
Duncan M — Google review
Spending the entire day here felt like a dream. The water was warm, the waves were gentle, and everyone around the beach was respectful. There were plenty of beach chairs to rent and open spots to lay out your blanket. Plus, lots of spots to grab food and drinks if you didn’t bring any. This place is an absolute must-visit in Puerto Escondido. Just watch out for the stairs — going down is “fine”, but the climb back up is definitely a workout!

Very easy walk in this park. You will be pressured to get guild, not necessary. buy Tickets ONLINE. If monkeys or sloth spotted there will enough looking up to know where they are. Fake listing. Don’t pay these inflated prices. The laguna/lake is found 20 minutes west of Puerto Escondido, you can see it on the map. Just drive there between sunset and 9:30pm and you’ll only pay 150 pesos to have a tour.

MAGICAL!!! Tips that I think would be helpful to know: We booked a lagoon tour via WhatsApp with Restaurant La Rosa de Monterrubia, a lovely chap named Antonio. We spent a little extra on a private tour so we could go later when it was fully dark (very important - light and full moons are no bueno). Antonio gave us a price much lower than the larger group tours we were trying to book from the bigger places. We got a taxi from PE which took about 20 min each way. Arrived 8:15pm, well after sunset. It was a little spooky pulling up to the restaurant when it was dark, after all the other tourists have left. But Antonio greeted us straight away and walked us down a wooden walkway to the dock. A 20 min boat ride along the lagoon takes you to the swimming area where the luminescence is indescribable. That would’ve been more than enough value for our money. But we then cruised another 15 min or so to where the river meets the lagoon, and that is where I won’t spoil the magical display that awaits you. You CANNOT swim in this area, which has crocodiles, but if you’re lucky you’ll see their red eyes in the light and get a thrill. The stars were incredible to gaze during the serene drive back on the calmest waters you’ve ever seen (sit up front). Highly recommend!

Playa Coral, located near Playa Bachocho in Puerto Escondido, offers a serene escape from the bustling main beaches. The Pacific waves are relatively calm here, making it perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Visitors can explore an abandoned hotel that was left overgrown after a hurricane hit the seafront several years ago. While there are no vendors on the beach, it is known for its cleanliness and peaceful atmosphere during the week.
My favorite beach in the area. Not busy, not crowded, there is natural shade. Waves as in all of the beaches but you can enter the sea carefully. Nice scenery. I walked there through playa Bacocho and didn't have to pay to the hotel. There are umbrellas you can rent (unsure about the price) and vendors pass by with water / beverages/ seafood. Recommended.

So happy we found this beach as the others were really busy with people and boats. Turquoise sea, lush palm trees behind you and white sand. It’s quite cool to see the abandoned waterslides too. We rented a parasol from the guy which we were very grateful for and meant we could stay all day. There’s even a little bar to get cold drinks from if you need. If you have good sandals you can climb over the rocks to the next beach and release baby sea turtles! The Only Downside is the hotel makes you pay to enter but it’s only $50 per person.
Sophie B — Google review
50 peso entry, 80 pesos with a drink. Amazing beach with a 5 minute walk down to the beach, some shady spots to lay in the sand. You have access to the hotel pool as well. Absolutely worth it. Beach has a lot of shells and different colored rocks
Leo L — Google review
Nice beach with tons of rocks , there is access around the cliffs and above from the road
Iguana — Google review
This beach is pretty quiet during the week and has many spots in the shade. There are cute dogs running around, playing with the waves. The waves can be strong, don't swim with glasses. To reach the beach directly from the road, you can either pay a $50 fee to go through the hotel or go through a pretty adventurous path on the side. It's fine if you're fit and don't have vertigo
Jadwiga — Google review
Beautiful beach with rough waves, entrance was through Villa Mexicana. $50/person to enter and $100/per person if you want a hamburger included. The ramp leading down to the beach is pretty steep, so anyone with mobility issues might have a problem going down/getting back up from the beach.
Saba B — Google review
Super nice beach, fairly calm, palms to get some shade, bar with drinks is available. $50 are due for the entry via the Hotel on the hill. The rundown parts (old slides, buildings etc) give this beach a nice and special touch too.
Joccolin — Google review
You have to pay to get in here through the hotel (we paid $100 for two at 7am one morning), but it was worth it for sure. The old creepy abandoned water park is amazing and the beach was perfect for swimming. There’s some rocks and bits to walk around on the right too, which was nice.

Playa Bacocho is a hidden gem in Puerto Escondido, known for its long stretch of golden sand and as an important turtle-nesting site. Unlike the more popular Instagrammable bays, this beach offers a quiet and uncrowded atmosphere, making it perfect for those seeking relaxation and romance. With only a turtle sanctuary and two exclusive beach clubs, Playa Bacocho is ideal for a day trip.
Releasing the turtles was so fun! We went the day after Christmas so the lines were really longs we waited around 45 mins in lines. The staff were great and gave us a ton of information about the turtles and their organization. The price is now 200 MXN instead of the 100, which is still pretty fair.
Jacob D — Google review
Really beautiful beach, such a great scenery. Gets busy by sunset time, almost empty during midday. No shadow so bring umbrella. Difficult to enter the sea if you are not experienced because of big waves. At 5pm there is the turtle release by the organisation (didn't participate, felt really touristic and not that environmental friendly). Beautiful sunset.
Arriana M — Google review
Nice beach. The waves are quite tall. Not that suitable for swimming. On the plus side there's almost no one. It's a bit further out though.
Niklas B — Google review
Playa Bacocho is a beautiful beach located in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Visitors can enjoy the soft sand, clear waters, and breathtaking sunsets. Additionally, the experience of releasing baby turtles into the sea is emotional and unforgettable, making it a must-do activity for anyone visiting the area.
Sebastian F — Google review
Wow, is all I can say. Such a nice beach. Release the baby turtles, then stay for the sunset! Only downside is that there are no food vendors there and the waves are a bit rough. Must do for all Puerto visitors imo. Bring umbrella as there is no shade. Price for turtle release has increased to 150mx
Errol L — Google review
Great beach to see the baby turtle release, if you want to release them you need to pay 150 pesos. The sun down on this beach has the best views!!!! You need to be very careful to swim. Go at 18:00 +- to enjoy the above.
Jose P — Google review
The beach itself is lovely and sandy but the highlight by far and away is going at 5pm and releasing baby turtles into the sea. You pay 100 pesos per turtle but this goes toward the conservation and is incredibly worth it. Once you release the turtles be on the look out for crabs and gulls as there is nothing more upsetting than seeing your turtle getting pulled into a crab hole or whisked away by a hungry gull!
Max H — Google review
The most special beach in Puerto Escondido! Highly recommend releasing a baby sea turtle. 5pm everyday - 100 pesos per person. The money goes toward the volunteer group that helps rescue the turtles.

Transportation from Puerto Escondido: any Collectivo Shared Van service direction Rio Grande- tell the driver you are going to Chacahua National Park and need to exit at El Zapotalito. The stop or "parada" is on the main highway at a dirt road intersection. Cross the highway and wait at the small wooden Collectivo stand. A Collectivo Taxi will cost $25 Mxn for 10 min drive to the lancha /boat docks. Here is the tricky part! Make sure you use the far LEFT docks for the "local" lanchas. Google Maps "Lancha Collectivo" in El Zapotalito. This is where the lanchas are reasonable in price. The local captains are kind and fair. Direct non stop from El Zapotalito to Chacahua $200mxn per person. Or in Collective lancha to the Collective Camionetta to Chacahua is $50Mxn per person. Find Felipe he owns his own small lancha and is very kind for a Direct ride without Camionetta. WhatsApp +529541479971. **CAUTION: DO NOT use the Lanchas at the far right side from where the Collectivo Taxi stops- they have a large colour sign with prices showing ..Tour of Mangroves $3,500 total trip and $2,500 direct nonstop to Chacahua total trip. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND A COMPLETE SCAM!! Walk to the far left and use the "local" lancha Captains. We had no idea and were 3 people to share the cost..$830 per person from these "sharks"! The beach and cabanas: Beautiful- Spectacular!! Stay on the Ocean side as the Lagoon side is less expensive but is run down and swimming is among the lancha boats going back and forth. The Centre square has tiendas and restaurants- Chacahua Wings is very good, the Guacamole served at the place to the right of Wings is amazing, the Barbacoa Burritos are so good across the square from Wings! The centre square is where the Collectivo Camionetta drops off and picks up passengers for El Zapotalito. Go visit Miguel at the restaurant beside Cabanas El Paraiso fir amazing, delicious Enchiladas Verde! We loved our private room with toilet and shower and mosquito nets at Cabanas El Paraiso...right on the ocean beach..with hammocks and bar.

We visited at night for the bioluminescence lagoon, and oh my gosh. It was pure magic. The ride to the lagoon itself was so much fun, zipping around the mangrove canals in the dark, avoiding fishing nets with all kinds of birds and bats flapping over head. And the bioluminescence? Bright, magical, and a one of a kind experience. Definitely a must see and well worth the hour drive from Puerto Escondido.

It's a bit if an adventure getting here but well worth it. To get here from Huatulco you need to take at least 2 buses, a taxi, boat and then a truck it's a fun trip but you're looking at about 5-6 hours of travel (at least). Once you are there you have a boatload of restaurants to choose from, plenty of cabanas to rent and access to beach camp grounds. The natives are incredibly sweet and welcoming. The views are breathtaking and the waves are a surfers delight.

The nature and the birds are beautiful. Go there if that's what you want to experience. There is one very cool bar run by Pedro who's happy to talk to you and serve you his specialty, frozen mescal recipe with milk. I haven't really liked that there seems to be 2 restaurant per outsider/tourists (beginning of March). It gave the place an empty feel.
Kevin B — Google review
Very beautiful place, worth the visit. It's quiet and peaceful. If you want a break from the city this place is perfect. No internet or service. So if you can adapt to this life it's amazing. The locals are one of friendliest people I met in Oaxaca!

Our group of 3 people who were staying in Acapulco hired a driver to visit the ruins of tehuacalco. It was very interesting. I highly recommend you visit. Our driver served as a translator as the ruins guides do not speak English. Had a tasty lunch afterwards in tierra Colorado of rice, beans, tortillas, guacamole, and servesas for 4. 220 pesos!

Campamento Tortuguero “Playa Hermosa”

Mentioned on

Animal protection organization
Nature & Parks
Campamento Tortuguero "Playa Hermosa" is an animal conservation organization in Acapulco that works tirelessly to protect three different species of turtles. They embark on nightly beach patrols, searching for mother turtles laying their eggs and carefully relocating the nests to their protection camp. Once the eggs hatch, they assist the baby turtles in reaching the ocean safely.
If you consider yourself an eco-tourist, this is a great way to learn about sea turtles and get to see them up close and personal as the newly hatched babies make their way to the sea. The work they are doing is amazing and the staff is passionately knowledgeable. I visited as a surprise for my 50th birthday and it was life changing.
CPT S — Google review
Three turttles especies that come to the coast of Acapulco to laid their eggs. You will learn about the tireless work of walking long hours along the beach at night searching for mother turtles laying their eggs, bring the whole nest to the protection camp and planted the nest at the patio of the house, wait for the eggs to hatch and live the experience of helping a baby turttle reach the ocean. Then, We are going to go to Barra Vieja Lagoon to do a wonderful lagoon tour. We are going to sail through beautiful mangroves, see many different kind of birds go to a lily flower sanctuary and get the clay mask that cleans the impurities of your skin.

We didn’t know anything about turtles and left this place feeling the need to be better with nature! This place really informs you on all about turtles! This I would definitely recommend you bring children to! It’s a beautiful thing that they could really learn from! This place is family owned and the people that volunteer give out really good presentations! Rudy Fregoso and Poncho took us there so definitely recommended you book through them to get the best experience!
Flor L — Google review
A great experience for those conservation minded folks. Started with a little video subtitled in English about the turtles laying their eggs, them being rescued and incubated and hatched and finally released into the ocean. Was good to participate in something that hopefully helps save them from extinction.

We stayed for a month at the diamond Beach club, every evening we would come to swim and see sunset, absolutely beautiful. The problem being 2 of my sons and my wife refused to go into the water because there would be brown like rust covering the water at times. My other son and me, didn't care we jumped in the waves had fun all the time. However the contractors rebuilding the hotels told us there are many boats that sank in the sea from the hurricane, and there giving off a lot of bad substances from degrading. When we arrive back to the states my son who was in the sea was sick they tested his blood and he had huge levels of lead in his system, guess what so did I. My wife and The other 2 boys didn't have any at all, their levels normal. So my advice enjoy the pools, enjoy the sunset at the beach but don't go in the water at the moment, it's to risky, they need to do something about the boats that are sank and leaking battery acid and metal.

The last time we went, the palapas were already 500 pesos for the whole day, they are worth it and you already have your things, however, we had a swell and if the beach has already been swallowed up by the swell, there is almost no room left. If the waves are coming towards the palapa, so be prepared to grab your things. Nice beach, calm ocean, nice swimming. Umbrellas and chairs available for a price or as perk if you order food and drink.... depending on the location. Beautiful views of Acapulco. Some of the vendors walking around were a bit aggressive, but didn't diminish our wonderful experience.

I always went there because it was simply beautiful along with sunsets. The water is gorgeous. The high rise hotels give it that international appeal with the mountain backdrop. Many of the world's best resorts can be found there. Unfortunately and sadly in the last 15 or so years crime, drugs, etc. has taken its toll on city and it's lost some of its glamour. Acapulco is a stunning place and deserves a second chance
