Zona Arqueológica El Tajín

Museum
Sights & Landmarks
Ancient Ruins
Museum at El Tajín ancient city site, dedicated to local archaeology finds & pre-Hispanic culture.
Amazing views and history! They are still discovering more as well. Our guide was very informative and kind. He learned all our names as well. Although a guide is not needed to go, they are great if you don't know anything about the Tajin Pyramids. If it's a cloudy day, you're lucky. Definitely bring a hat or umbrella to hide from the sun. A fan is nice, too. There are a few trees with benches underneath, too.
Destiny C — Google review
This is such a beautiful ancient city. The pyramids here are different from the reast in the area, they look a bit more Asian than meso American. It's pretty big with a lot of areas to explore. Bring some water and snacks. Take your trash with you and keep this place clean and neat. I highly recommend the trip to this area.
Joe B — Google review
Was a nice 2.5 hour excursion. Visited with kids, they had fun although it was humid. Bring water and hats if you come in the summer. Lots of places to sit and relax and take it all in. Would recommend coming early in the morning. We got lucky and it wasn’t too hot but it’s 11:50 now and it seems like it’s going to warm up quick.
Cruz P — Google review
This was a great archaelogocal sore top see. Our guide was very informative and excited to talk about the site. The ruins are in good condition and a new area was opened for viewing earlier this year. We were there in the evening on a Monday and had the place to ourselves.

Super cool place. Totaneca pyramids dedicated to the thunder god El Tajin. Worth a 1/2 day trip
Chappie C — Google review
Amazing site to see pyramids. The style that the "Totonacs used is completely different than anything else in Mexico. Absolutely beautiful. In the jungle, not too many people around. It is 20 pesos to park, but you do have to go through a muddy road to get to the parking, and then 90 pesos a person to enter. You also have the flying hanging dancers, but I will warn you, they charge 50 pesos to watch a 5 minute show. But it was pretty cool to watch and record on my phone.
Chad E — Google review
Lovely site. Easy to access from Papantla and worth a visit. Not much information available on site though, so best to do your research ahead of time if you don't be doing a guided visit. Staying for the Voladores is an absolute must. Currently 50 pesos per person. And a beautiful sight.
Anne C — Google review
Much larger than I anticipated. Take sunscreen and umbrella, you will be in direct sun. Of course you need to go through a wave of vendors before entering. Once inside, take time to learn the history and culture significance of this area.

Eco Park Xanath - Papantla

Park
Nature & Parks
Nestled just a short drive from Papantla, Eco Park Xanath is a hidden treasure that offers an immersive experience into the world of vanilla farming and local ecology. Run by the passionate Jose Luis Hernandes Decuir, visitors can expect an engaging 90-minute tour filled with insights about agricultural practices, cultural heritage, and the fascinating history of vanilla production in Mexico. While language may pose a slight barrier—Jose speaks limited English—his enthusiasm and gestures make communication effortless.
Outstanding place to get to know more about Mexico’s vanilla! The guide has vast knowledge about the history of the town and vanilla, therefore it is a must experience at Papantla!
Jose G — Google review
I was happy to visit this vanilla farm during our travel in mexico. The owner Luis was trying his best to explain passionately about the vanilla farming, Mexican history and more. Despite the language barrier we were able to have a nice morning in this organic run farm. Thank you

An amazing experience. The owner and guide is friendly, knows a lot about the plant, good explanation about the stages to produce vanila. There are vanila products, ice cream, plants and souvenirs you can buy. People take it by tours but you can take a cab and go by yourself.
Cheke P — Google review
Beautiful place. Lots of gorgeous song birds and plants. Jose Luis is passionate about the fauna, flora and history of the region. Don't miss a chance to speak with him.
Eleonore L — Google review
Really nice place! Luis is happy to share all His knowledge about the vanilla Plant and about all The history! We spend a wonderful afternoon, tried his homemade vanilla rum and got to see real vanilla Plants!
Michelle B — Google review
The little gem, off the beaten track, but only a few minutes away from Papantla is run by José Luis Hernándes Decuir. He gives a great introduction to local ecology, agricultural products, culture and history. He speaks very little English, but what words can not transport is easily made up by gestures and enthusiasm. The tour of the Parque takes about 90 minutes. I gave a rating of "Good" for the facilities because it is a Parque Ecológico, so do not go there in high heels and an evening gown!

Tons of crocodiles! Very amazing area for a boat ride. I'll never forget this experience.
James V — Google review
Great experience. We were there in the beginning of November.
Ingy — Google review
It's a 45 mins ride in a launch. It's costs around 50 pesos.. there are no much wild or bird life to see around this place... But it's super cool to take this ride in the middle of the day to escape the heat of Veracruz costal line... If you are lucky you will encounter one of the locals who sells michiladas and beers... Also offers to take a picture with their crocodile (holding it :p) if you purchase some drinks...

(Translated by Google) A very beautiful place, but if you're traveling by car, don't follow anyone before entering, because they want to accommodate you wherever they want and charge 100 pesos for admission to the Golondrinas waterfalls. It's recommended to park in front of the entrance to the breezes, since access costs 5 pesos per pass, and you can leave your car there. I'm leaving photos for further reference. If you want an easy start, I recommend starting with the “Las Brisas” waterfall. If you want it more, start walking at the “Las Golondrinas” waterfall. In each waterfall there is an extra charge. We paid for access to the waterfall and the guide, and then told the guide that we hadn't paid. Be very careful in that place because if the owner is the one stealing, imagine the employees. Besides, they want to charge a lot for parking. Be careful. You can do the tour without a guide; everything is very well marked and easy to access. The place is undoubtedly beautiful, but the people are the ones who leave much to be desired... Be careful because everywhere they offer you "how to get there" and all they want is to make you pay more. In the stores, check your bills carefully... In the center of Cuetzalan, there are people offering this waterfall tour for between 600 and 800 pesos per person, which is excessive since if you bring a car, you can get there super easily and without paying much. The entrance fee is $5 per person. For Las Brisas Waterfall, you pay $35 per person. It's worth mentioning that the path is very easy, with pre-marked steps. You don't need a guide. They just take advantage of the fact that you don't know how to get there. There are three waterfalls right there, which are the ones they offer on the tours. If you don't have a car, you can also get there with the vans in the center; they charge between 20 and 25 pesos per person. You can buy food and bring it in without any problem, including your own horn. Inside, there are people selling antonyms, marches, snacks, and restrooms. If you go to Cuetzalan, you can take advantage of the opportunity to visit them, but don't be fooled by these "guides." If you go, you can also eat at a place I meet with Mr. Hernandez. You can find him in the Hernandez parking lot, just before La Brisas. You eat very well for only 120 for a set meal that includes soup, stew, beans, water, and dessert. He was the one who advised us not to pay for the tours, and it was the best option. (Translated by Google) The place is beautiful but as soon as we paid the entrance ticket they left us to our fate. After going down for about 10 minutes, the booth where the bathrooms are located and where they serve was no one. There are two paths to take there, with two doors. One was closed, the other open, so anyone believes they should follow the open one. After 30 minutes lost among the mountain trails looking for the waterfall we decided to return to the cabin frustrated. It turns out that there was no one there yet and in a last attempt to find the waterfall my husband decided to open the door to the other path. The waterfall was indeed there. ZERO INFORMATION, not a sign, and poor staff. There's a campground and cabins, both in excellent locations near the waterfalls. My friends and I camped near a waterfall, and it was a ✨phenomenal✨ experience, as you sleep and wake up to the sound of the water in the background. As for the amenities, they're all excellent. The showers and bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. They also offer other services like zip-lining, breakfast, and horseback riding—all in one place. The atmosphere and amenities are in very good condition, and I loved how organic they are. 🤩 Plus, paying for your night's stay includes firewood for a campfire. There's security, and the place is protected, so it's safe. Overall, the staff is always very attentive. Something I loved about this place is that it opens the doors for exploration. Therefore, the service can be autonomous or guided (we were 100% independent and hiked on our own). In short, it's an incredible place, ideal for recharging. Would I recommend it? 100% yes, and even more so if you're a nature lover like me 🍃😍. You're sure to find some great people here.

For the solo backpacker on a budget. From Tlapacoyan you can take a local bus going to Martinez del Torre from the main terminal with VIA and tell them to let you off at El Encanto, about 10 pesos in 15 mins from centro. At the highway drop you walk 30 minutes to the end of the road while making a left turn after about 10 mins which you can see on Google map. You pay a 10 peso entrance 5 mins before the road end. Can also hire motos at highway. At road end is the river where you can hire a raft for 100 pesos a person to reach the waterfall which is a 5 mins paddle. You could swim but water is frigid all year in a shadow. With a small group you can add a rafting trip down river afterwards which is done more cheaply there than at adventure camps. Back at highway flag local bus from Martinez. You can't see waterfall from road end but its just around a corner. You don't need a full rafting trip, just a short crossing around that corner.

I think most places in this area are under reconstruction after a prolonged period of neglect. This is the general feel of the place. Nice enough to take children, though there isn't much to see. For adults alone, it's definitely not the place to visit, but ok for a family visit. Entrance for adults is 50 peso and less for kids.
Jonathon D — Google review
We planned to go here for my son's birthday but when we arrived they said it wasn't open, but everything online said it was. We were certainly disappointed. We may try again another time but we'll see.

It's a pretty nice place because you can touch all in, it is so interactive, just be sure of visiting it when it is not use for private parties or special events.

Museo El Lencero

Mentioned on

Museum
History Museums
Museo El Lencero is a captivating 16th-century museum housed in a historical plantation with Spanish Colonial architecture and 19th-century decor. Located just a short drive from Xalapa, it offers visitors the chance to step back in time and immerse themselves in the bygone eras depicted through its antique furniture and colonial design. The entrance fee includes a tour of the house, providing insights into the origins of the furniture and stories about previous owners.
Lovely place! Could easily spend 2-3 hours here. A quick bus ride from Plaza Crystal only costs 12 pesos. Entrance fee was 50 pesos, but the tour of the house is included. The tour wasn't super informative, but it was nice to hear an explanation of all the countries that the furniture was from and hear information about the previous owners. I went during the weekday and there was only one other family on the property with me. There is a small restaurant that sells light snacks & drinks, but you should bring your own snacks. Worth the money & worth the visit!
Janaye G — Google review
Great views, the place is very nice. The 3 stars are because the explanation is pretty lame and they only talk about the forniture. I believe the place doesn't have too much history to presume.
Enrique D — Google review

This is a must visit place, make sure you have your camera and time to take the guided tour. They have a coffee shop with beautiful views. No inside pictures!
Hector M — Google review
It's an old "hacienda" and it could be considered historic but there isn't much to see like a museum. This place is more for like a stroll and maybe a picnic, thought I doubt they allow you to enter with beverages. There's just lots of space to walk and take pictures really. The downside is that there is a 40 peso fee to enter and you can't park inside so you have to walk a bit.
Eliezer C — Google review
Good place to walk and see some pieces of furniture and architecture. Parking must be improved

Botanical garden
Recreational area around a towering cascade, with pools & paths in a rocky forest setting.
Most beautiful place I've ever seen. This place is stunning! Breathtaking sights. Crystal clear water pure enough to drink. I would definitely come back here. So calm and relaxing!
Rhea L — Google review
It is a place to relax and enjoy. 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Sunday. Ticket: $80 with discount for children and senior citizens. You can swim in specific areas and It has a small butterfly garden. The exhibit animals are no longer there (by COVID) and also the road to get to the place is narrow and bumpy. They could offer more services and better restrooms.
Wendy B — Google review
That is really nice experience beautiful nature
Gabina D — Google review
This place is beautiful. Caution the water is quite cold. Looks can be deceiving. Please do not jump into the water. Make sure to aclimate your body first before jumping in. You can go into shock!
Mark J — Google review
Beautiful Natural place where you can actually watch where water comes from. The park has a few places where the kids can play safe and also has places for adults to swim. You can also bring your own food and cookout on in the camping side of the park. They offer River rides for very reasonable price. The restaurant is a bit pricey and not very good. The only thing needed here is a few more restaurant options other than that very good place to visit.
Antonio D — Google review
Incredible place! Amazing views of the natural reserve, fresh cold crystal clean water from the waterfalls. There is a restaurant as well for lunch and drinks. You can swim in the river although the water might be very cold for some. The environment is literaly a jungle and make you feel part of nature. Must go-100%. Price for entry is less than 90 pesos.
Champis M — Google review
Love nature; this is a beautiful nature scene with awesome cascades, rafting and swimming areas for the whole family 🌊🌊the water is cold but nobody even minds it really. My kiddos stayed in the water the whole time we were their. Only thing I didn't like was the food in the restaurant; it has no flavor and the service is pretty bad.
M V — Google review
You have to walk down some very steep stairs, make sure you wear some water shoes or sneakers. Only carry what you need, maybe a backpack since the walk is a little hard. The water is very clear, the whole place is very beautiful, there is a couple bathrooms, and even a place to see butterflies.

Ancient Ruins
Quiahuiztlan is a pre-Hispanic Totonac town and necropolis situated on a plateau below a horn-shaped mountain. It had approximately 15,000 inhabitants during Cortes' arrival in 1519, with an uncertain history before that. The site comprises two pyramids, carved monuments, and more than seventy tombs. Its strategic location provides stunning views of the Gulf coast, lagoons, and nuclear power plant cooling river.
Incredible place. Lots of history here. Wendolyne our tourguide was very helpfull and professional.

The view from the Tree line of the basaltic volcano core of Quiahuiztlan toward the ocean. A view from the archeology site toward the basaltic core; where else on the entire Gulf Coast is there a volcano core, a mountain this high, within 1 mile of the Gulf of Mexico and why are there no ziplines, yet, back down to the Villa Rico fish restaurant!

We absolutely love this historic site. It is our second visit, we went in 2022 and again now. Be sure the hire the services of a guide, otherwise all you see is nicely stacked rocks and stones. Beautiful views out over the ocean and the totonaca graveyard.

10/10 experience from start to finish. We booked rafting the day before hoping there would be space last minute, and we were lucky! Really great communication via WhatsApp. Easy to find location with wonderful views. Every single staff member completely lovely and welcoming! Rafting was SO much fun, first experience of it and now keen to do more! Would 100% recommend this fantastic company.

Amazing experience! Great service and professional guides. The tour takes about two hours on the river, plus an hour getting to the place. Totally recommended

Great place to do Rafting, it is in the best river in Mexico to Raft in this time of year. The place is very simple but ok for the weekend. The service is good. Food is plenty and local. The drinks are not expensive but the quantities quite small. Things to look out for is that they do not respect the schedule they share for the activities, so be prepared to wait. Also if you want the pictures they take while rafting, you will have to pay for them even if you have not seen them as they refuse to show them to you so you can decide if they are worth having or not.
Badi R — Google review
I recently stayed at Rio Aventura Expediciones and had a mixed experience. The white water rafting itself was absolutely awesome—an adrenaline-packed adventure that truly showcases the beauty of the river. The food served was also fantastic, with great flavors and quality. However, there were several significant drawbacks to my stay. First, the guides seemed to be in a pretty sour mood. They looked like they were just there to fulfill a duty rather than ensuring we had an enjoyable experience. It was disappointing to see such lack of enthusiasm from people who play a crucial role in the adventure. Another major issue was the lack of adherence to schedules. From activities to meals, nothing seemed to happen on time. The schedule was constantly changing, or sometimes just ignored entirely. It was frustrating not knowing when things were supposed to happen, and it really disrupted the flow of the trip. Lastly, if you’re planning on getting any rest during your stay, think again. On weekends, the nearby town has late-night music events that go on until the early hours of the morning. The music was extremely loud and often accompanied by drunken singing and “banda” music until 5 AM. It was impossible to get any sleep, which really took away from the overall experience. In conclusion, while the rafting and food were excellent, the poor guide attitude, lack of schedule adherence, and noisy environment made the stay less enjoyable. If you’re considering this place, be prepared for an inconsistent experience.

Really good experience in rafting the Pescados with Rio Aventura ! Special thanks to our guide Pepe. The rappel of 90m was really impressive! We also really enjoyed the experience of the Temazcal with Paulino, massages and relaxation and a little herbal tea to finish the evening. The stay in the cabana was cosy even if the mattress could have been of better quality. The food was really really good, the diner and breakfast we had were amazing. The only negative point was the barking dogs at night...

Wonderful!! The guides are world-class (in some cases, literally, former champions), the scenery was incredible, and the rapids were a blast! We could stop and swim, cliff jump if desired, and laughed the whole way! Marcela in the front office is incredible (with perfect english and spanish, too). Also a LOCAL BUSINESS, five generations on the river, not owned by a foreign businessman. Loved every minute of it!!! Muchas gracias a toda!!!

Wonderful team and experience. I was lucky to go with Huitzilapan for rafting and canyoning, under the week and off season. Both adventures were great, the guides lovely, the group small and like a family, the prices very good and the support from Yerisel in the office fabulous. She was very responsive and helpful, since I first had to figure out how to get from Xalapas to Jalcomulco. Muchas muchas gracias!

I highly recommend Jalco Expediciónes. They are very welcoming and accommodating. The guides are professional but are all about everyone having fun. Great place. A guide will take a group of people around the exhibit where you can see hundreds of crocodiles. Big and small, you can also buy the crocodile hide and meat and other items.
Iguana — Google review
Quite the scam actually. The free entrance for one with toll booth ticket does not apply to the long tour. The long tour also DOES NOT always feed the crocodiles, so ask beforehand. If they don't feed the crocodiles it is NOT worth the money. The guides are quite knowledgeable, but the office staff are cranky. Also there is 4% charge for using a credit card so bring cash. They say it is a 50 minute tour but it took 2 hrs, most of it waiting on people to take pictures. It's a tourist trap.
La F — Google review

The tour is not bad.. but the office staff are lacking in basic social skills... Very rude... Type of people who seem bothered to do their job and take your money... Would it kill her to smile? We went on the longer tour... Had to pay per car... But were charged extra for a 5 year old... Advertised we would see them feed the crocodiles... But no... Overall, a big disappointment. Several Crocs with neurological problems and other deformities...
