Nestled in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula's rainforest, Zona Arqueológica de Calakmul is a well-preserved ancient Maya city that offers a real-life adventure for history enthusiasts. The site, also known as Ancient Maya City and Protected Tropical Forests of Calakmul, is surrounded by the vast Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. This lost city features impressive ruins including two large pyramids known as Structures I and II.
Not the easiest place to reach but the visit is definitely worth it! We left at 3am from Campeche and after a 6 hrs drive we reached this archeological site in the middle of the jungle where you can climb on the pyramids and enjoy a beautiful view of the area. I also suggest you to get a guide and go for a walk in the jungle where you might find monkeys and crocodiles

We were surprised by the fee right at the beginning of the road after leaving the main road. As foreigners, we had to pay 305 pesos per person plus 90 pesos. This is addition to the 100 pesos per person entrance fee, which is paid at the park entrance. Only cash! The road is relatively well-maintained, but the walk is long. Restrooms are only available at the entrance. The first pyramid is 800 meters away. There were brief directions, but only one map of the entire complex. Unfortunately, the information was very limited in English. Unfortunately, we didn't see any of the animals, except for a peacock turkey. At the entrance, it says that you're not allowed to climb pyramids, but it wasn't a problem with the two largest ones. It took us three hours to see everything.

First of all it is worth every KM you drive and step you take. Just an incredible archaeological site. You can climb up the structures and get an amazing view over the jungle. You even get to see some apes. There weren't a lot of people, but in the next few years this will probably change due to the Mayan Train. The road is asphalted, there is no more road work. But still it takes about 1 1/2 hours for the 60km.

Its amazing to be able to climb to the top of three pyramids. The new Maya tren Calakmul hotel looks good, I walked through just as it was opening. Its the closest accommodation to the ruins, but still 11km away.

Due to el tren Maya, the road to Calakmul is a breeze to drive on now. Unfortunately that also means more tourists. That being said, visiting the ruins of Calakmul is definitely still an adventure, as the nearest town of Xpujil is 2+ hours away. Once there, the sites facilities have been completely renovated, with a new parking lot, toilets, ticket office and a very nice small museum including some great sites. The walkways are easily accessible and the structures are the most impressive I've ever seen. Add wild monkeys, toucans and even a wild tapir to complete the experience! The only downside is the walkways and maps are pretty difficult to wrap your head around, so getting lost is pretty easy, though highly recommended if you have the time :-)

The site is absolutely amazing. Well worth the 2 h drive. The road has been refurbished so it’s a very smooth drive there with free parking right out the front. We arrived at 6 am and the park was already open. Signage inside the park could be a little better and there are no toilets in the park at this point (currently being built). It’s a lot of construction around the entrance area but the main site is untouched by this and a fantastic wander with monkeys and all kinds of animals around. Definitely recommend climbing the main pyramids, the sight is breath taking. Take lots to drink as amazingly the site is free of tourist shops and vendors at this point! also they only take cash. Safe travels!

Here's what you need to know before visiting Calakmul (2025): -Total entry cost: 305 MXN (biosphere, obligatory) + 100 MXN (site ticket) = 405 pesos per person -Free shaded parking -No food or drinks sold inside – bring your own -Toilets only at the entrance How to get there: From Highway 186, follow the well-marked turn for Calakmul. After the checkpoint (where you pay 305 MXN), the road continues through the jungle. It’s paved/cemented but has curves and some potholes. Easy to drive. The checkpoint is also your last stop for gas, snacks, and water – stock up! We stayed in Xpujil, 2 hours from the site – perfect base. Coming from Campeche takes 5–7 hours, so staying nearby is a good idea. The site is deep in the jungle, peaceful and magical. Easy walking trails in the forest, but steep climbs on the pyramids – 100% worth it for the view! Tours are available (transport + guide + tickets for ~2400 MXN), but we went independently with a rental car and it was super manageable. Highly recommended if you’re looking for something authentic and less touristy. Totally worth the effort if you have time!

There is a lot to see here including three big, climbable temples. Also, chances are high to spot wildlife. However, the big drawback is the location, because it just takes forever to get here (over 1 hour of driving after entering the park) through winding jungle roads (which are in good condition, however). It is also quite expensive (you pay twice, once at the park entry 315 pesos, and again 100 pesos when you actually enter the ruins after long driving). At least parking is free here. Also, it was not as empty as I expected, given the remote location, since there were quite a few guided groups running around, and groups tend to make a lot of noise. At the top of the pyramids, you'll likely not be alone.

Drive there is easy now - a new road had been built, but it is still long. 60km through the jungle there and back 30km/h, at times 40-60 km/h. On 27th km there is a 1200m loop through the jungle, I recommend you take it, but walk slowly, quietly and be receptive. You may see a lot of animals that way. We got the full experience with a snake rattling at us - maybe not entirely preferable for many. The site itself is epic and the main climb is totally worth it. You'll get well above the jungle. Monkeys in the trees are a plenty. If you're hot, tired, you may skip the Muralia part, nothing there really. Bring some water, it's about 2hrs on the site.

Probably the best ruins you can visit. Climbing on top of the big pyramids is just spectacular and a once in a lifetime experience. It’s a long way to get there, but the road is new and so worth it. A big plus is also that there are nearly no tourists compared to other more popular sites.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Hochob, located near Dzibilchen, is a prominent site among the Chenes archaeological sites. Situated approximately 15 kilometers away from the main highway, it can be accessed via a paved road. It's worth noting that there is a large Pemex station at the turn-off before heading to Xpujil, making it convenient for travelers to refuel before continuing their journey.

Cenote Miguel Colorado

Bodies of Water
Amazing spot! Two cenotes - one is for swimming and kayaking, the other only to look over and take photos of. They are both very photogenic. There is a little a hiking route around them (the sign says 5.7 km, but it seemed way less to me) and a zip line, which is included in the price of the entry fee (100 pesos). All in all, there’s quite a lot to do, you can easily spend 2-3 hours there. Unless a big bus comes, there’s not many tourists. I’ve been there until the closing time (16:30) and hardly anybody was there at that hour.
Barbora Š — Google review
The cenote itself is beautifully located. The facilities are a bit run down. We spent about an hour in the place, and were all alone the entire time. Life jackets provided and opportunities to kayak and swim. The water is quite warm so the swim wasn't as refreshing as we'd hoped. All in all a nice place but probably not worth the 1.5h detour over very poorly maintained roads.
Tom H — Google review
The place is decent, but Agua Azul is a lie. It’s murky green water. Naturally it’s beautiful, but nothing like the beautiful crystal clear waters of northern Yucatan peninsula. Nice the kayaks were included. 200 pesos seemed like a lot for a remote site like this, but overall a good experience. Probably wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re already in the area looking to buy some time. Monkeys are always a plus!
Kolby N — Google review
I really enjoyed this place. The men that ran the zip line really made sure I felt safe and were very patient. The only reason I didn't give 5 star is because they do not have water or snacks to purchase and if your there all day you will need to pack a lunch. BUT the team was helpful and went to town for us to purchase water. Overall worth the drive!
Kathrine C — Google review
Beautiful place, very exciting the zip line, and swimming in the cenote to rejuvenate amazing 😀
Flor S — Google review
This is a really lovely open air Cenote. First you take a walk, we also did a zip line high above the lake, that was awesome. You see the monkeys in the trees, and after aclgreat walk around, we had a “refreshing’. Swim in over 30’ C water. The middle of the lake is a bit colder. You should just visit this Cenote. You can also cano there.
Han E — Google review
Zip-lines were not working and we were charged 150 pesos per person. This is much higher than it used to be according to some reviews. But the worst of it all was that the gate was not fully opened which resulted in some scratches and a bump in our rental car... That being said, the place is great for kayaking and watching local nature. There are plenty of howling monkeys in the area! Observing them in the natural habitat was the highlight of the day.
Kamil S — Google review
Definitely closed for a long time now. No guards though, and the cenote is easily accessible around the utility shed. Absolutely worth it, beautiful scenery and amazing water. A couple local kids were enjoying when we stopped by and didn't care about our presence. Bring what you need and check it out, it's worth making the detour and stop.

Edzna Archaeological Zone is a hidden gem that offers a special experience due to its lesser-known status, allowing visitors to explore the site with minimal crowds. This ancient regional center flourished during the Classic Period and features the impressive Five-Story Pyramid, providing stunning panoramic views. Unlike more popular sites like Chichen Itza, Edzna offers ample space for exploration without feeling crowded. Visitors can climb most of the buildings and admire well-preserved decorations such as masks from the temple underneath.
A truly rewarding experience. The site has several structures to admire with many able to be climbed. Going by collectivo now costs MX60 per person one way but entrance remains, for now, just MX100. Two hours was the perfect amount of time to take it all in. Very few fellow travellers!

One of the oldest Mayan cities with amazingly preserved artifacts. The 5 floor pyramid is beautiful, the whole site is 10/10.

The most breathtaking sight I have seen so far! It is much bigger than you can imagine. We took a guide because there was 1 available and there were no visitors so it felt like a real private tour. The guide explained us much more than you are able to find yourself which made the experience even better!

Amazing and calm, do not miss this archeological site!!! After being shocked by the experience in Chichén Itzá with the many thousands of shouting vendors constantly breathing in our neck to buy at their stands, here we went through the opposite. Instead of the crowded and loud place we arrived to a calm and peaceful Mayan site with grandiose well-preserved ruins. We were probably a total of 10 people at the site at noon on this Tuesday. So special, we loved it! ❤️
Tamás L — Google review
Made an afternoon trip from Campeche as part of a Yucatán roadtrip. Absolutely worth the drive and feels unique compared with other sites in the region. Mid-sized site with a handful of enormous structures, most importantly the massive acropolis with the main palace. Almost everything can be climbed, the notable exception being the palace. Excellent small museum with everything translated into English. Iguanas are sparser compared to other regional sites so spotting them is a real treat.
Matthew T — Google review
A breathtaking site in incredible condition. Entrance is only 100 pesos and it is well worth getting a guide (although there is a great museum and helpful signage too). We spent 2.5 hours there but would have liked to stay longer

Nice archeological complex. We were almost alone in there. Not many tourist. Good value for the cheap entry fee. Lots of mosquitoes - bring some protection.

A must do in Campeche !!! Ancient beauty that the Mayas build & is still standing in great condition. The site is well kept, but no stores to buy water or food, so go prepare & it's really humid and hot. Mosquitoes 🦟 will bite you since you walk in, but you are in the middle of a tropical jungle, so take gallons of Mosquito repellent!!! Besides that, it's an incredible place to explore the greatest of the Mundo Maya in Mexico 🇲🇽

Unfortunately, at the time we visited, the access to the viewpoint was closed, so we could only see it from afar. It would be great if they put up a sign with hours 👌🏼 But without a doubt the view from that entire area is super beautiful! On the other side of the road is the municipal pantheon, which has beautiful paintings on the outside.

Campeche, a charming Mexican port city located on the Gulf of Mexico, is renowned for its well-preserved baroque colonial buildings and military architecture within its walled historic district. The city's fortifications from the 17th century, built in response to pirate attacks, now house two hilltop fortresses that serve as museums.

Sights & Landmarks
Puerta de Tierra, also known as the Land Gate, was constructed in 1732 and used to be the main entrance to the city. Although it's no longer the primary gate to Campeche, it remains a must-see landmark. This unique attraction is an original fortified bastion with a former city gate within surviving and restored city walls. It resembles structures found in Spain or Portugal, adding to its appeal.
53$ to get access to the Camino de Ronda, 600m of walkway at the top of the walls from which you can peek at what s behind the facades and on the rooftops. Well worth it. Get in before 5 and you can stay until 6, all alone up there, and ring the bell to exit.

This is a pretty unique attraction to visit in Mexico. An original fortified bastion with a former city gate within the framework of surviving and restored city walls. It appears like something you'd see in Spain or Portugal, which is what makes it so neat. It's not exactly pretty or spectacular, but it is unique. There are a few shops and a restaurant or two on the "old" side of the walls. If you look north, off in the distance you can see the Sea Gate at the other end of the old city. Nice!
Bobby C — Google review
A walk along the old Campeche city walls comes with some nice views. Keep in mind there is zero shade.

One of the best historical sights in town! For only 15 pesos you are allowed to climb the walls of the former fortifications with a beautiful view over the colorful city center. Highly recommended, well worth the price. Can be quite hot up there in the sun, though, better bring some water and a hat. You might expect to spent about 20 minutes there, if you walk all around.

Centro Cultural Casa No. 6 is a museum located in a well-preserved 19th-century mansion that offers visitors a glimpse into the history of Campeche. The mansion was once occupied by a wealthy family, and it provides insight into the city's high society during that era. The museum features various rooms such as a bedroom, living room, and kitchen furnished with old-style furniture.
Very beautiful historic courtyard. Quick entry and viewing the entire property can be done in under 30mins.

This is a house of a wealthy family turned into a museum. It’s shows the lifestyle and living standards of wealthy merchant family when compared to common people. It’s situated on the main central square. Nothing special and was small, however our tour guide made is interesting and the rating is in context of Campeche. We took a two hours walking tour which covered this. The tour was very reasonable.

Very nice museum. Helpful staff and wonderful exhibits of Mayan artifacts. The explanations are also in English. The jade mask is probably the highlight of the museum. You can also access the walkway atop the old city wall from the museum.
William L — Google review
The centerpiece of the collection is an exquisite jade mask that alone is worth the visit. Of all the museums we visited in Campeche, this little Mayan museum was a favourite. Admission includes access to the old city ramparts, for a stroll on the walls.
Hein V — Google review
We had been trying to get up on the walls of the old town for a while and found this place which though small has some nice pieces in it - the star of the show is a jade mask. Just incredibly beautiful. The view from the top of the wall is nice too and you can look out across the Gulf of Mexico and see if there any pirates!

Nice museum but quite small. Worth the $5 US price.

Calakmul mask is awesome, it's displayed with glass 360°. Museum is pretty small and the mask is the best of it. You can walk over the wall and have some views. 70 mxn/person

Outstanding display of Maya architectural elements from different styles around Campeche i.e. steals and decorative carving. Beautifully displayed and explained in English as well as Spanish. Part of it is air conditioned. Also display and explanation of a fine jade death mask and associated regalia and burial goods. Be aware that it closes at 3 p.m.

Good value & quality exhibits. There are some very special Mayan artifacts here. Many displays are in both Spanish and English and they also include Mayan language. We visited the museum after our trip to Calakmul, which made the artifacts and information even more relatable. The museum is the perfect spot for a cool, quiet retreat on a hot day; we stayed for about an hour and a half (including the time spent walking the wall above the museum).

Museo de la Ciudad (Baluarte de San Carlos)

Museo de la Ciudad, located within the 17th-century stone fortress Baluarte de San Carlos, offers a free and insightful journey through the history of Campeche. The museum showcases key figures in the city's story, including the Spanish conquerors and notorious pirates who menaced the town. Despite limited English translations, visitors can grasp an understanding of Campeche's past.
We visited the Museo de la Ciudad on a Wednesday in the evening. Even when they close at 6 pm we were allowed to go inside at around 5:50 pm. The museo is very small but the staff members there are really nice and welcoming. You can see some information about the city, city wall and the pirates. On top you are able to walk on the wall.

Great little museum in the wall of Campeche. Free but give a donation. Great place to spend up to 45 minutes on a hot day.
Gerry C — Google review
Very interesting to visit with a lot of history. There is no fee to go. Some of the information is also in English.
Monica M — Google review
Start your visit here it's free and tells you about the history of pirates in Campeche.

From someone who comes from Quebec and has lived in Quebec City within the walls of the old city, it is great to see a similar set up in Campeche. Most of the walls have been kept and this section of San Carlos offers a nice view on Campeche from the walls. Not super well maintained but it was free, so hard to complain! It is worth a stop and while the museum is small we learned a lot about Campeche's history.
Patrick T — Google review
A free museum which exhibits a history of the city of Campeche! It shows some of the main characters in the story of the town and the guide was very helpful. Not everything is in English but you can get an idea of what the place was like. The Spanish came in the 16th century with Francisco de Montejo, and later his son of the same name. There is a little bit of information about the pirates who plagued the town and the reason for the defensive walls. You can also get up on top of the bastion and enjoy views across the town and the sea.
Joe S — Google review
There is a great little museum here with some signs in English for tourists about the history of the city and fortifications. It wasn’t quite the pirate war everyone imagines!

One of the notable churches in Campeche is the Iglesia San Román, also known as Santuario del Santo Cristo. This centuries-old church, located within walking distance from the historical downtown, holds a significant place in the town's history. It is said to date back to the early years of settlement in the 1600s. The church, often referred to as a beautiful cathedral, is renowned for its black Jesus statue.
Lots and interest history of this place. I love it. Is walking distance from the historical downtown. The black Christ is beautiful and amazing. Believer or not don't miss it.

Beautiful cathedral...this centuries old boatmakers church displays a black Jesus...the church dates back to the early years of the settlement...1600s from what a guide said to us A quiet place within a busy waterfront town...if it could only speak...

The Campeche Archaeological Museum, Fort San Miguel, is a must-visit attraction located on the western outskirts of Campeche. This 19th-century fort offers stunning coastal views and houses a remarkable museum showcasing Mayan relics found at the Calakmul archaeological zone. The museum features an extensive collection of stone carvings, jewelry, and ceremonial objects that provide insights into the ancient Mayan civilization.
Very good exhibition of many Mayan artifacts, from jade masks to stele to painted pottery. Beautifully presented, with most of the explanatory signed translated into English. Perhaps the best collection of Mayan works that I have encountered.

Walked from Centro, quite a hike but definitely worth it. Quick tip if you walk, once you reached just before where the road is signed to branch off up the hill to the left you will see another road on the left with steps going up. This is the quickest way up. Once there you will find a small but well curated museum of Mayan history and culture and then magnificent views across the sea from the fort roof.

Very nice museum with a lot to see and understand about the history. It's in the Fierro San Miguel first walk around and enjoy the views and go in every single little exhibition room. I was surprised by the collection they've. Parking is infront of the main door, washrooms available, disabled access is available.

Enjoyed this fort and museum better than fort San Jose...artifacts are displayed well...loved the piece they had of jade... Plus the canons are displayed nicely.

MX$75 admission gets you into a well-maintained old Spanish fort. Lots of old cannons and some views on the top level; a small but very good Mayan archaeology museum occupies the main floor rooms (with many English signs).

This was absolutely amazing! We stayed in Campeche over the weekend. There is so much to see that we couldn't see it in 2 days. The history of the Fort, the views from inside the fort walls are breath taking!

Very well preserved piece of history. Building is in great shape. Lots of cannons from above. The grounds are free to explore without paying a fee, which can be just as fun if you’re not looking to see the Mayan exhibits inside. Lots of great Mayan art and history in exhibitions. Not a lot of history on the actual building or the people who made it, which I was hoping there would be. Beautiful views of the Gulf from the top. You can do this in about an hour.

Playa Bonita is a charming beach located about 20 minutes from Downtown Campeche, offering a delightful escape to the sea. Despite not boasting the same level of scenic coastline as its Caribbean counterparts, this beach has plenty to offer. Visitors can expect shingly sand, free cabanas, and calm waters perfect for swimming. The area is also ideal for water sports enthusiasts with activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing available.
Really nice beach with perfectly reasonable price
Tung H — Google review
Narrow beach and the water was dirty. Did not swim. We had a drink at Kanan so we could get some shade. Cute place with friendly staff.
William H — Google review
Unfortunately the water was turbid when I visited. Also the beach was full of seaweed and clear water seen on some other photos wasn't something that could be enjoyed. The day was pleasant though and this beach can be an option if you want to be close to the town. Not too crowded on the weekday. Keep in mind that you have to leave the beach the latest at 5 pm and the entrance fee for foreigners is 100 pesos pp. A hit with shade is for free if you get something from a restaurant (small beer for 45 or caguamas for 85 pesos)
Monika — Google review
If you’re going to visit this beach start by lowering your expectations. And then lower them even more. If you have super low expectations, maybe you won’t be disappointed. The water is super shallow and full of seaweed. The beach is pretty. They do keep it clean. But it’s not really a beach you want to swim at. They illegally charge you to access the beach. $100 per person, but they also provide you with decent bathrooms and showers. Definitely one of the worst beach experiences we had in the Yucatán, but again we had low expectations so we weren’t too disappointed. An hour there was more than enough.
Emily P — Google review
Beautiful beach. It costs 40 pesos to enter then you can rent a chair or sun lounger for 10-20 pesos depending on what you have. I went on a Monday and it was busy. But i went a week later on a Tuesday and it was quiet. The staff from the restaurant are nice enough they asked if i needed anything. But was happy with my water. Had a couple of beers after my swim. 40 pasos a can. I would recommend the sunsets are stunning.
Martin O — Google review
Mixed feelings with this beach. The pro's: the wooden cabins look pretty sweet, provide fair bit of shade and the breeze alone brings plenty of cooling. The staff was friendly and prices in bars where fair. Showers everywhere to cool you off. Con'$ : entrance is a bit high for 100 pesos per person. You need to pay additional for a chair and stuff. For that amount, just include that. The beach itself is not so good. It was so shallow, it's impossible to swim. Therefore the water is so warm (plus 30 degrees) it gives little cooling. The surface is cover with tons of grass. Tough it's nature, it's not comfy to get in and out at all. If you go, I suggest to bring water shoes for sure.
Niels W — Google review
Pleasantly surprising much better than I was lead to believe. Beach is cared for seaweed removed, clean and tidy well with the 100peso plus to enter. This beach is far superior to the county club and your putting pesos in the locals pockets rather than some corp.
Al B — Google review
40 pesos entry and you get a hut with shade included. You can hire a sun bed for 20 pesos or a chair for 10 pesos. Hardly anyone there, so peaceful and beautiful. The sand is white and the water is so still and blue. Saw lots of fish in the water and pelicans feeding which was so cool. No one hassled us, no one tried to sell us anything other than letting us know the restaurant was open for food and drinks. Bus back into town is 7 pesos and picks you up by the roundabout. It’s not the best beach in the world but would deffo recommend!
