Island
Nature & Parks
Waiheke Island, located near Auckland, offers a range of activities and experiences for visitors. The island boasts stunning views of the Auckland City skyline from its wooden dining rooms, making sunset dining a particularly beautiful experience. From white sand beaches to archery classes, Waiheke Island has something for everyone. Visitors can enjoy fine-dining experiences as well as more affordable meals across the island.
You have to come to Waiheke. It's like a tropical holiday, but within a 45 min ferry ride from Auckland Central. I would recommend staying at Onetangi as there is a magnificent beach and three restaurants to have dinner at. Also, local cafe and bakery make excellent pastries. Travelling on the island is very easy with the local bus running from ferry terminal to Onetangi... a 20-minute trip ish. Along that route are many vineyard's which all offer tastings. They are excellent and they really know their stuff. All in all, it's a fantastic place to have a couple of days break.

Beautiful island with a determinedly rural vibe despite proximity to New Zealand's largest city. There are wineries and secenic lookouts and the island is easily reachable on the regular ferries from central Auckland
Bernard S — Google review
Such a beautiful island escape! Loved driving around, taking in the stunning beaches and charming wineries. The vibe is super relaxing and peaceful — honestly felt like the trip should never end. Perfect spot to unwind and soak up nature.
Gopal D — Google review
Waiheke Island is an absolute must-do day trip in Auckland. The ferry is short (45 minutes) and smooth. We enjoyed beaches, wineries and restaurants. From gelato and fish n' chips to wine tastings and charcuterie boards, everything was delicious. I would definitely recommend Island Gelato Co. Waiheke (the passionfruit coconut flavor was to die for) and Postage Stamp Wines (amazing drinks, meats, cheeses and views).
Leilani O — Google review
The ferry ride to any of the islands is a must when you are in Auckland. Stunning & peaceful beaches & shores. Beautiful vineyards. The island has enough activities to choose from. There are scenic lookouts where you can enjoy the present doing nothing. There are no vehicles, other than the hop in hop off buses. These buses take you everywhere on the island.

Waiheke Island is a beautiful place and definitely worth seeing at least once. Most places were closed during my visit, but the scenery was still lovely. Glad I visited, though I don’t think I’d return.

A fantastic low-key adventure for all ages! We had such a fun time with EcoZip Adventures—it’s been on my list for years, and it didn’t disappoint. The guides were friendly, informative, and made everyone feel at ease with a simple, well-delivered safety briefing. I really appreciated the extra care they took for those with back issues or injuries—it made a big difference. The views soaring above the treetops were absolutely stunning. A perfect way to kick off our inaugural Dad & Daughter adventure day!

It was an amazing experience! Not only the ziplining part was so much fun, but the landscapes you see are really worth it! Our instructors and guides, Lucy and Rob, were so nice (and funny haha), but they also know a lot about the area so you learn interesting facts and that’s a cool bonus ☺️ highly recommend it! Thanks!

Lovely day zip lining with EcoZip Adventures on Waiheke Island today! They picked us up from the Waiheke Island Ferry Terminal, and drove us to the site. The staff were friendly and professional, and we had a great time zip lining the 3 courses. Beautiful views as well. Finished off with a bush walk back up, and dropped back off at Oneroa Village and the Ferry Terminal
Pat T — Google review
This was a highlight for our Auckland holiday! It was so easy to organise and it we were collected from the ferry terminal, and taken on a scenic drive up to the HQ. Our guides were super informative and so much fun! My daughter was quite nervous and they worked with her to work through her nerves to make it such a memorial experience. They dropped us off at a great spot for lunch. The scenery was spectacular, the Fraser’s animal impressions on the zipping gave us a good giggle.
Naomi P — Google review
Fabulous friendly and informative staff who helped us from the booking, organise the ferry, pickup and showed us an amazing ziplining experience and some incredible bush walking on the majestic Waiheke Island. I would stay longer on the island for sure next time to further explore and enjoy all the restaurants that the island has to offer...just beautiful!! The ziplining was also epic, finishing with a real ripper!!!! The kids and I loved every minute of our adventure!!!

A must see and visit in the island. Both Lucy and Marcus bring the highest quality of service to our family. Not only the exciting zip but also the lesson for the forest and nature protection. If you have a family of 2 kids, please make sure you booking from the website and choose the family plan. For all customers from other than western country, no need to afraid the barrier from language, the warm and kind welcoming will help you overcome all the difficulties. A big thumb up for them.

Fantastic experience beginning with spectacular views over Waiheke with Rangitoto and Auckland in the distance. Professional operation with 3 zip lines followed by an ecological informative walk through the old bush. Highly recommended

The guides were super friendly embedding confidence in a very relaxed atmosphere. My young Grandson was really enthusiastic and I had to try and restrain him from going first jump at every station 🤸🏽‍♀️🤣🤣 .As we walked through the lovely shaded native bush back to the start , the young one looked up at me and said “Thanks G.Dad that was such fun” 😊😊👍 Thankyou EcoZip adventures for a great afternoon 👍👍🇳🇿

Stonyridge Vineyard

Vineyard
Restaurant
Nestled in a picturesque valley adorned with olive trees and vibrant vines, Stonyridge Vineyard offers a romantic and exotic setting for cafe dining, private events, and weddings. The vineyard is renowned for its French-inspired Cabernet blends and is considered one of the top ten must-visit wineries globally. Visitors can indulge in wine tastings, savor gourmet platters that complement the wines perfectly, and explore the beautiful surroundings.
An Unforgettable Experience at Stonyridge Vineyard – Waiheke Island I recently had the pleasure of visiting Stonyridge Vineyard on beautiful Waiheke Island, and wow — what an unforgettable experience from start to finish. To be honest, I’ve never really been much of a wine drinker - but that may have changed forever after this visit. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning surroundings and relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The vineyard itself is absolutely picturesque, like something out of a postcard. Shout-out to Ella for the warm welcoming as we went in! Your a star! Our wine-tasting was taken with Gary, and it was truly exceptional. His knowledge of both the wine and the vineyard’s rich history brought a whole new appreciation to the experience. He was passionate, engaging, and made learning about wine feel effortless and fun. After tasting a variety of wines and learning how to truly appreciate the flavors, I think I’ve officially converted! Pinot Gris may just be my new drink of choice! Gary, if you’re reading this - thank you for making it such a standout experience! 10/10 recommend Gary for your tastings! Now, let’s talk about the food… incredible!!. Every dish was bursting with flavor, beautifully plated, and perfectly paired with the wines. From rich, savory mains to delicate fresh starters, each bite felt thoughtfully crafted and elevated by the wine it was served with. But the real showstopper? The cheesecake! Hands down, 100/10. If I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I absolutely would. Creamy, dreamy, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious—it was the perfect sweet ending to a flawless meal! Thank you Chef Sam and Chef Arnaud! The staff were warm, friendly, and attentive throughout our visit, and I have to give a special mention to the Manager - Jaden - who was absolutely wonderful—approachable, professional, and clearly loved what they do. You could feel the positive energy flowing from the entire team. To the incredible team at Stonyridge - Chefs Sam and Arnaud, the staff (S/O to Vale, Kiki and Mathis), the wonderful manager Jaden, and of course Gary....THANK YOU for such a memorable day. I came in as someone unsure about wine, and left as a total convert with a new favorite drink and a full, happy heart. I’ll definitely be back!
Sky W — Google review
We did visit a couple of vineyards during our day trip to Waiheke, and we loved Stonyridge. It was a bit less crowded than other major vineyards, but it has so much character. It is very peaceful, and the scenery is so beautiful. Highly recommended!
Stephen — Google review
This was the second winery I visited during my trip to Waiheke Island, and overall, it was decent. If you're catching the island tour bus, be prepared for a decent walk from the bus stop to the winery. The walk does come with some beautiful scenic views, though. When I visited, the winery appeared to be undergoing renovations, which limited access to certain areas and likely affected the overall experience. I did the $25 red wine tasting, which included three red wines that were quite enjoyable. I liked one enough to buy a bottle to take home for $65.
Seulki C — Google review
We dropped by Stonyridge Vineyard and were warmly greeted by their accommodating staff. The surroundings were absolutely beautiful—lush greenery, peaceful views, and a tranquil atmosphere that made us want to stay longer. We picked up a bottle of their popular red and took a moment to soak in the natural beauty around us. A lovely and relaxing stop that truly captures the charm of Waiheke Island.
Darell N — Google review
Delicious food, gorgeous view, great wine and awesome olive oil. I bought two bottles of olive oil from here as it is rich in flavour. If I have to go to Auckland again I will go back to this place!
RB — Google review
Keeping in mind that they are doing building work there, they have kept most of the view unspoilt whilst you enjoy your wines and food. Fantastic customer service who knew their wines and who were very welcoming. Wines were good and were reasonably priced. I would return again definitely.
Alex B — Google review
A very good experience & there are different options for wine tasting along with yummy food. The place offers stunning views with a great ambience.

SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium

Aquarium
Concerts & Shows
SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium is a renowned Auckland attraction that offers an immersive experience into aquatic life. Opened in 1985 by New Zealand underwater adventurer Kelly Tarlton, the aquarium features unique curved tunnels and conveyor belts for visitors to explore marine habitats. From King and Gentoo penguins to sharks, turtles, stingrays, seahorses, and various fish species, the aquarium houses thousands of marine animals in custom-made habitats.
It is a popular public aquarium opened in 1985 in Auckland, New Zealand at 23 Tamaki Drive. Using disused sewage storage tanks, the aquarium used a new form of acrylic shaping, which allowed curved tunnels rather than viewing areas with flat panels only. They also used moving walkways for people to travel slowly through the viewing areas. Aquarium's main features are the Antarctic Encounter and the Underwater World, but it also includes several other exhibits and education rooms. Very popular place, lots of tourists and locals. Toilets available. Restaurant available on site. Easy terrain, lot of easy walking. Friendly staff and great service. We visited on a weekday. Advise buying tickets ahead online. Beautiful place. Lots to see. Lots of parking available but gets crowded at peak times. Better go there early. Great place for photography. Gift/souvenir shop available on site.

We had my daughters birthday party here and hired the room which worked out to be more affordable and we were able to invite more guests. We were allowed to do our own catering which made it even better and the tour guide was amazing. Even though we were late staff were great and polite and friendly. We felt right at home. the kids loved it! The parents loved it too! So worth it.
The Z — Google review
SEA LIFE is a wonderful place to explore and learn about marine life. The aquarium is beautifully designed, clean, and very well maintained. From colourful fish to giant stingrays, penguins, and sharks swimming right above you — every moment feels magical! It’s a great place for both kids and adults, with lots of interesting displays and educational information. The penguin encounter and underwater tunnel are definitely the highlights. Staff are friendly and helpful, making the visit even more enjoyable. A must-visit attraction in Auckland for anyone who loves sea creatures and ocean adventures! 🌊🐧🐠
Arjun B — Google review
The aquarium overall was a pretty good experience. Great place if you love seeing penguins, turtles, sharks, jelly fish and other sea life creatures. Compared to other Sea Life we’ve been, it is smaller but it’s still a fun activity.
Danny L — Google review
Best aquarium to be in! Clean out space lots of species found in aquatic animals. Best is to watch jelly fishes, nemo, dory fish, turtles, sharks underwater tunnel. Would highly recommend to visit this aquarium. Clean, hygienic, safe, food availability, washrooms facility available, lovely watching had good time been here. Totally worth it loved it ! Only if they could keep good clean space for penguins that would be great!
Siddhi J — Google review
We enjoyed our time at the aquarium. It does get busy but we went early so it was not that busy. The "moving bridge" was awesome and the Penguins stole the show. The Jellyfish was beautiful and the underwater experience was amazing. My daughter enjoyed the VR experience as well.
Anthea A — Google review
Interesting place with a good variety of sea life. Enjoyed the Scott's Antarctic displays as well. It was a wet day so good to be out of the rain. Did the VR experience which was fun. Spent 8 minutes "swimming" with sharks. Another person in our group did the humpback whale experience. Manta rays was also available but no one chose it so can't comment. We all enjoyed the ones we saw. The only issue on the day was the car park is very small which was full when we got there and so had to drive out again and find limited street parking available. Ended up about 300m or so away. Not too bad but was pouring down when we got out. ☔️😠
Greg — Google review
My teenage daughter, and I, really enjoyed our visit to Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium. We especially loved seeing the penguins, and the jellyfish move so gracefully! We also enjoyed the shipwreck virtual reality experience. The stingray which swam overhead in the water tunnel were huge! I very much enjoyed reading the info about Kelly Tarlton

Manukau Heads Lighthouse

Scenic spot
Sights & Landmarks
Manukau Heads Lighthouse is a secluded beacon located on the Awhitu Peninsula, offering breathtaking sea views and picturesque picnic grounds. The journey to this 140-year-old lighthouse is as stunning as the destination itself, with rolling green fields reminiscent of the English countryside. Visitors can stop off in Waiuku for a picnic before embarking on the adventurous drive to reach the lighthouse.
“Manukau Heads Lighthouse Where the Ocean Makes Its Grand Entrance” 🌊✨ Ever wondered where all that water you see chilling at Onehunga actually comes from?.. This is the spot the grand entrance where the ocean rolls in like a boss.. And let me tell you,the view from the lighthouse is straight up mesmerizing.. 🌊⚓ Good news after being closed forever, the lighthouse is open again!.. You can climb up,walk around the 360° balcony, and let the crazy wind style your hair for free. 💨 The drive itself is a vibe winding roads, scenic stops that’ll tempt you to pull over for photos, and finally a gravel car park where the adventure begins.. Just a short 5 minute climb and boom, you’re at the top!.. Easy win.. Now… about the toilet.. 🚽 Let’s just say it’s “special..” No sewer system, just a giant barrel holding everything… Yes, you can see it. 😳💀 My advice, Either hold it like a champ or drive 40 minutes to the nearest town.. Overall,if you love nature, epic ocean views, and a little bit of wind in your face drama Manukau Heads Lighthouse is the spot. 🌅 “Logan was here chasing waves and wind at Manukau Heads 🌊💨”

Almost 2 hour drive from Auckland but last 1 hour drive is scenic drive, view is pretty good and at the end you’ll find this lighthouse. Honestly drive for about 2hr to see this lighthouse isn't actually worth it but its okay if you cover some other nearby places too like Hamilton gap
Md M — Google review
Long weekend, busy carpark, strong wind, yet we enjoy the trip and the view. Beautiful view of the ocean and Auckland from a distance. Toilet may need some attention, no running water. Overall still a good day trip.

Visited on a spring weekend to show my family the beauty of this place. The scenery never disappoints despite that I’d been here before. We live in Auckland and still took us close to 2 hours to drive and reach this place. Insanely historic and beautiful!

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Army museum
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is a grand Neoclassical building located on the highest point of Auckland Domain. It was built in 1929 as a tribute to New Zealand soldiers who fought in World War I. The museum boasts an extensive collection that spans from the first Polynesian settlers to modern times, showcasing New Zealand's history and natural heritage.
It is also known as Auckland Museum, and is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. Its neoclassical building constructed in the 1920s and 1950s, stands on Observatory Hill, the site being the remains of a dormant volcano. Museum collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, and military history. Its collections are organised into three principal areas: documentary heritage (manuscripts, correspondence and other historical documents in archives, along with pictorial art); the major branches of the natural sciences; and human history (broadly, material culture). Among the areas of significant focus are Māori and Pacific cultures, the human and natural history of the Greater Auckland region, New Zealanders' involvement in global conflicts, and exploration and discovery. Very popular place, lots of tourists and locals. Keep an eye on your valuables. You can get here by public transport or car. We took the car and found it not a problem parking at a paid public car park. Fair bit of walking around this large building under shade. Wear comfy shoes, take water. Toilets available inside the building. Gift/souvenir shop available on site. Fee charged for entry. Book in advance. You can spend several hours here, depending on your interest. Great place for photography.

Iconic Museum in Auckland and an absolute must see ! My highlight was the Vulcano simulator 🌋 You can easily spend 3-4 hours here and all floors host tranquil exhibitions. The team is excellent and will help you with all your questions. The cafeteria is nice and there is also a very popular cafeteria ☕️ I can highly recommend to go there !
The S — Google review
I would say this museum offers some of the best exhibitions in New Zealand. It features a wonderful collection showcasing Māori art, culture, and New Zealand history- from artefacts, paintings, and carvings to impressive life-sized pieces like the Māori waka (traditional canoe). The museum has also hosted incredible showcases such as the Guo Pei exhibition and, more recently, the DIVA exhibition in collaboration with the V&A in the UK. I travelled all the way from Wellington just to see DIVA! Tickets are reasonably priced (around $25) and include headsets, which is a great touch. The building itself is beautifully designed with sweeping ceilings and a bright, welcoming foyer that houses a café, restaurant, ticket counter, and access to toilets, a drinking fountain, and exhibition spaces. The layout is accessible and easy to navigate, and the facilities (including the toilets) are clean and well maintained. There’s also two floors of undercover parking located downstairs, accessible via lift. Parking payment is made at kiosks by card.
Daezjn — Google review
I highly recommend the Māori experience! It’s not a show but a sharing of culture. So don’t expect a long form of entertainment. I really enjoyed being part of it and being able to ask questions afterwards. The museum itself had a lot of items from many different wars and countries! It was interesting to see whole fighter planes up close! I’m only a bit disappointed that the main Māori exhibit is closed at the moment but it was definitely an informative time!
K W — Google review
They discounted my ticket because so many exhibits were closed but I was still disappointed. I really went out of my way to get here from the cbd and there were only a couple of interesting exhibits. Further, I went here on a weekend and experienced a lot of small children screaming and running around. I believe because admission is free for locals and parents were looking for a way to occupy their children. I enjoyed the war memorial exhibition, but was disappointed parents didn’t explain to their children that the exhibit deserved a little respect. I would recommend avoiding this museum when children are not in school.
Jennifer F — Google review
A well planned out museum for both young and old. The history of New Zealand's people both first nation and the rest are presented to us both visually and physically in items of historic value. Parking is limited especially during school holidays, weekends and public holidays. Excellent 👍 👌
Edward R — Google review
What an outstanding museum! The style of the building is gorgeous. Inside you are presented with a variety of areas related to New Zealand culture and history. At the time of my visit in late August 2025 , plenty of areas were closed off hopefully by my next visit, they will be open. The highlight for me was the World War level and everything related to our past. Would recommend to anyone who can appreciate NZ history! Also note the statue of Zealandia 🤍 If visiting, you should consider a donation. Entry is free for residents of NZ with proof of identity.
Rose — Google review
I had a good experience at the war memorial museum, though it was somewhat dampened by the museum being approximately half-shuttered due to long-term repairs being made to the building and galleries. The ticket cost was reduced by 50% to compensate, which seems about right. Highlights included the Auckland exhibit, which was very colourful, progressive, and optimistic while also reflecting on more difficult parts of the past. I also really enjoyed the gallery about New Zealand’s flora and fauna. It was especially cool seeing reconstructions of giant flightless birds. WWII scholars will love the reconstructed Zero. When I went on a weekday, it was quite busy with many children, so just be aware!

The Sky Tower is a 60-storey landmark in Auckland, New Zealand, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city. It stands at 328 meters high, making it the tallest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Visitors can reach the observation deck via a glass elevator and capture stunning city panoramas that extend up to 80 kilometers on clear days.
This is an absolute must-see attraction and should definitely be on your list when visiting Auckland, New Zealand. The entry ticket (NZD $47) is well worth it, as it gives you access to a spectacular panoramic view of the Auckland CBD, the harbour, and even the distant suburbs. I recommend visiting on weekdays if possible to avoid the crowds, and be sure to check the weather before going so you can make the most of the views. Don’t miss the Sky View Observation Deck and Café — it’s a great spot to sit back, enjoy a coffee or a couple of drinks, and take in the stunning city skyline from above. A fantastic experience overall, and one of the best ways to see Auckland from a whole new perspective.

You can see up to ~ 80 km in good weather, including volcanoes, harbour, city skyline etc. • Orbit 360° Dining Restaurant: A revolving restaurant located near the top — dining with panoramic views as the restaurant rotates. • SkyBar: A bar high up in the tower with expansive views. • SkyWalk & SkyJump: • SkyWalk — walk around the exterior of the tower at height, harnessed. • SkyJump — a controlled “jump”/plunge off the tower from a height (for the thrill-seekers). • Gift shop, cafes, and casual dining, including Sky Cafe. ⸻ Structure & Design • Built with high-performance reinforced concrete shaft (about 12m diameter) with support from piles, and with a steel mast at top. • It’s designed for safety: wind resistance (can sway in strong winds), seismic design to withstand significant earthquakes, fire safety features, etc. ⸻ Hours & Tickets • Opening hours: The Sky Tower is open daily, from morning (around 9:30 am) until evening/night (hours depend on the day & season). • Last entry times vary with season. • Admission fees: There is an entry fee for the observation decks. The cost depends on which deck, whether you want to add things like SkyWalk or SkyJump. • Booking: Better to buy tickets in advance online to secure times and sometimes get discounts. ⸻ Why It’s Worth Visiting • It’s an iconic Auckland landmark — visible from many parts of the city, a symbol of Auckland. • Unmatched 360-degree views of the city, harbour, islands, volcano cones etc. • Combination of experiences: you can just enjoy the view, or add excitement with SkyJump / SkyWalk, or dining high up. Gives options depending on how adventurous or relaxed you’re feeling. • Great at sunset or at night for city lights.

In cities that have a big tower like this it's almost always worthwhile to go up and check out the view. This tower has two levels of observation and one level for dining and bungee jumping. There may be other levels but there were some renovations happening at the time of writing. I'm sure this could be made into a much bigger activity by dining here during the sunset or jumping off (a desire I'll never understand) but just as a casual place to spend some time between outings in Auckland it's pretty great.

So worth the money to visit the lookout! A bit scary at first but well worth the beautiful view. We really love that there’s also a sit down option where you can enjoy the view and some good kai. There’s also ice cream and coffee at one of the lookouts.
Ms B — Google review
A good view of the city and probably one of the only things to do in Auckland that is actually in Auckland and doesn’t require a day trip. Price felt a bit expensive for what it was as there wasn’t actually that much to do at the top bar the views. But if you’ve got a spare hour or two in Auckland and aren’t strapped for cash then I’d do it.
Ciara L — Google review
If you come to Auckland, DO NOT MISS THE SKY TOWER!!! Yep, both my wife and I enjoyed our time looking at the majestic views and taking photos. Seeing Auckland from this vantage point was a great way to see the city. Plan your visit for a clear day to maximize your viewing pleasure.
Keith K — Google review
Had a great time up here. Price was a little steep for what it is but we had a good time nonetheless the less. Some fantastic views across the city and had the weather been nicer I can imagine some of the views would have been majestic. Elevator takes you up to the 51st floor and then another elevator takes you up a further 9 floors. All in all, worth a visit for an hour.
Jamie F — Google review
Sky Tower is definitely one of those must-do experiences in Auckland! I’d give it a strong 9/10. The views are absolutely stunning—you get a full panoramic look over the harbour, city, and even out to the islands. The photos you take up there will be some of the best from your trip. The glass floors add a thrill, and if you’re feeling adventurous, the SkyJump or SkyWalk turn it into more than just sightseeing. The only minor downside is that tickets can feel a bit pricey, but honestly, for a once-in-a-lifetime view, it’s worth it. It’s the kind of spot that really makes you feel like you’ve “arrived” in Auckland.

Auckland Zoo, New Zealand's largest zoo, is home to over 130 species and nearly 900 animals across a variety of exhibits. Situated conveniently in the heart of the city, it offers visitors the opportunity to embark on a global tour through diverse habitats in just a few hours. Celebrating its centenary, the zoo has recently undergone an impressive transformation and welcomed new residents such as Sumatran tigers and Sunda gharial crocodiles.
Excellent zoo - Book the tour! The zoo is very well maintained and the animals look healthy and happy and have an option to remove themselves from display if desired. However, I saw almost every animal the morning I visited. (the lions were off display due to enclosure maintenance). The keeper talks were a highlight, and I got to see the porcupines fed up close. As they are generally nocturnal, this is your best option to get a glimpse of them as they sleep the rest of the day. The zoo is sectioned into five separate loops making navigation very easy. There’s also a lot of places to eat and drink and bathrooms along the way. I booked the tour and was delighted with the quality of the guide. They were extremely knowledgeable and personable. Not only did I learn a lot but I was able to see a lot more of New Zealand native animals, flora and culture because the guide pointed it all out. There is a lovely gift shop at the entrance/exit. I found some nice quality items for gifts and some great native guidebooks for myself. I believe you can hire strollers and umbrellas and things like that there too. Also, getting an Uber just outside was extremely easy. Allow around three hours minimum to see everything comfortably.

Such a fun place to go as a family. The dinosaur area is so cool! Ice cream and coffee isn't stupidly overpriced. Would definitely recommend! We went on a Friday which was a lot nicer as there weren't big crowds.
Aleisha — Google review
I really enjoy this zoo. It sets an entirely new standard and I feel like I could spend forever there. The new do up is gorgeous, especially for the Tigers, Gharial and NZ Bird Aviaries. I love that the enclosures are all so spacious and that the animals are able to have space away from visitors if they want it. Sea krait is awesome too, hopefully in time it will also get a nice enclosure upgrade.

Mum of under 3, we go almost every week ! We love Auckland zoo 🫶🏻. We have the annual pass and go through the zoo slowly though my toddler has other ideas (aka running !) it's such a great open space for them to run around to burn the energy. Recommend going in the weekday, although there can be lots of school kids during these times. Weekdays do get pretty busy and I would have to park in the outer parking lot. Weekdays are easier to get tickets but it's a lot easier if you buy tickets online so you can just go into the zoo. Don't forget to take a picture with the elephant !
Sisyl — Google review
Incredibly impressed by how happy and content almost every animal was. I am used to seeing stressed animals pacing back and forth, but most of the animals were happily resting or interacting with their environment. There is a lot of renovations currently happening to improve the zoo so we did not get to see everything, but it was a wonderful place to go. I only wish I could know more about the individual animals, lots of staff around but it is a large sprawling area so hard to always find someone who knows about the animals
Rebekah S — Google review
I hadn't been to the zoo for about 10 years, but I was very impressed with the changes that have happened over that time. It has wonderful enclosures for the animals, showing off animals from around the world and here in Aotearoa, and if utilizes it's space very well. A great place to take the family. The only hassle was car parking which, unless you get there early, will see you parking on the streets surrounding it.
Anthony P — Google review
Such a cool place for both adults and kids. Lots of animals to see and they seem well looked after. The playground areas are also fun for the kids! It seems lots of schools visit on a Friday but didn't cause any delays and it was fast to by a extra ticket. The annual pass gives a decent discount on all purchases.

Piha Beach

Piha Beach is a popular coastal destination known for its dark sand and powerful waves, perfect for surfing enthusiasts. Its sweeping vistas offer breathtaking panoramic views that can be enjoyed during long walks or hikes up Lion Rock, which provides an excellent vantage point. However, the beach's currents are strong and not ideal for swimming, requiring lifeguards to be on duty regularly. While climbing Lion Rock can be challenging, the stunning scenery at its peak makes it a worthwhile experience.
Best time to be there is 4:30pm for sunset view and do kitekite falls track at 3pm Beautiful creation of God. Worth the experience. Just drive safely. Don't swim here. Good for picnic.
Maryanne T — Google review
The views are just unbeatable. Lion Rock is an amazing natural feature, though sadly the hiking path was closed during our visit in early September 2025. Still, hiking around its foundations and investigating the tidal pools and beach was a lot of fun. The drive to get here from Auckland was very winding and treacherous for a person unfamiliar with the geography, so those with weak stomachs or nervous dispositions may be in for a difficult trip to get here!
Eric B — Google review
Absolute must when in Auckland. Stunning huge beach with sparkling black sand and even penguins! Lots of surfers and families, is practically empty if you come in the morning. The parking is free and has so much to explore.
Kyle C — Google review
Lovely black sand, fun to watch the surfers…. Or book a surf lesson if you feel up to it. It does get busier throughout the day so maybe try and go early although we found plenty of parking
Ciara L — Google review
Love this beach at this time of year - very few people on beach but plenty of surfers as the waves were good. You can do a decent walk along the beach and you will fall in love with the Wild West Coast of NZ. Only 45 min from Auckland Central.
Alison T — Google review
The drive to Piha Beach is an experience in itself — a long, winding road that’s both fun and a little challenging, so a bit of carefulness is needed. Depending on the day, the view from above the beach can be breathtaking, or it can completely disappear under a blanket of sea fog, which makes each visit unique. At the main carpark, there’s a restaurant that serves really yummy food — a nice spot to recharge before or after exploring. The beach itself is stunning but deserves respect. The waves can be unpredictable; during my visit, we got unexpectedly soaked, though thankfully not pulled out to sea. It’s a reminder not to underestimate the power of the surf here. That said, Piha is also a safe and relaxing place to simply take your shoes off and enjoy a “beach foot spa” in the sand and shallows. It’s wild, beautiful, and memorable — just go prepared for changing conditions, both on the road and at the beach.

If you're looking for a place that combines the power of the ocean, the calm of the bay, the majesty of the mountains, and the softness of the sand — this spot won’t disappoint. Only about an hour’s drive from Auckland, it’s perfect for a relaxing weekend getaway with family.

Tiritiri Matangi Island is highly recommended for those who seek an experience with rare bird species amidst blooming flowers and singing melodies in the air.
Tiritiri Matangi Island – what a gem! ✨🌿 Spent the day exploring this incredible open sanctuary, and I’m still in awe. 🚤🐦 From the boat ride over to the peaceful bush walks and hearing rare native birds sing, everything felt like stepping into a different world. We managed to do all three major tracks in just four hours – such a perfect mix of nature and a good walk! The volunteers were absolutely amazing, sharing stories and helping us spot birds we might have missed. 🙌💚 Loved spotting the cheeky takahē, hearing the tūī’s call, and soaking up those ocean views. 🏝️💙 The Lighthouse area is so nice and perfect for a picnic – definitely worth stopping there to recharge and enjoy the view. Visitors can encounter native birds and enjoy family barbecues in the spacious grounds. Walking tracks lead through farms where sheep and cows roam freely. The park also offers a beautiful beach with plenty of shade from surrounding trees.

There is plenty of parking inside but it is very confusing, don't park near the bus stand . You can take your car inside up to a certain distance which is very helpful specifically near the "Photo Frame" point. There are 3-4 trails but please do necessary research of the we

Such a lovely place, full of greenery. We could hear the sea and watch a fantail playing with us. We drew in the sand and had a pleasant chat with a cheerful elderly couple. I saw a little bird and thought it only had one leg. It turned out it was just tucking one leg up to rest.

Shakespear Regional Park is a wonderful place to spend a peaceful day outdoors. The scenery is truly beautiful, with a perfect mix of open grasslands, forest paths, and coastal views. Walking through the forest while listening to the sound of birds creates a very calming and refreshing atmosphere. The park is well maintained, and the walking tracks are easy to follow. It’s an ideal spot for both casual visitors and those who enjoy longer hikes. What I like most is how quiet and natural the area feels, even though it’s not far from the city. Overall, it’s a great destination for anyone who wants to relax, enjoy nature, and take in the stunning New Zealand landscape.

I guess its one of the best picnic spots for family and friends to have outdoor fun. Truly a great experience during summer. The place is settled by the beach which makes it even more exciting for those who wanna do water activities and swim. Perfectly safe water and also the water is so clean. I really had fun at this place and would definitely recommend you all to visit this place with your fellow friends and family.

Shakespear Regional Park was about an hour’s drive from West Auckland, and 100% worth it! 🌿 We didn’t realise there were multiple walking tracks to choose from, so I’d definitely recommend doing a bit of research beforehand to plan your route and pack accordingly. We started with the short track to the waterfall—an easy 10-minute walk surrounded by beautiful native bush. From there, we continued on to the Picture Frame lookout, where the track opened up to stunning views across the landscape. We then followed the Lookout Track which led us to a breathtaking 360 degree view of the Auckland skyline, Hauraki Gulf, and the surrounding islands. On the way back, we walked part of the Heritage Track, which brought us back to the carpark. The whole walk was peaceful and relaxing—a perfect chance to unwind from work and spend quality time with my partner ❤️ We’re keen to come back and try the other tracks, which I’m sure will be just as majestic. Visiting this park made me appreciate even more how beautifully New Zealand protects and preserves its native plants, wildlife, and history.

Nestled along the stunning west coast of New Zealand, Muriwai Gannet Colony is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and bird lovers alike. Just an hour's drive from Auckland, this remarkable site features a thriving colony of Australasian gannets, with over 1,200 nests perched atop rugged coastal cliffs. From August to March, visitors can witness these magnificent seabirds in their natural habitat as they care for their young and engage in playful antics.
Truly a must-visit. It's an experience that feels almost otherworldly, particularly when you catch one of those spectacular west coast sunsets. Beyond the stunning views, the location is surprisingly well-equipped. The presence of clean, well-maintained public restrooms is a definite plus.. The spacious car park offers flexibility; you can enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your vehicle, set up a picnic, or take a short stroll down to the beach for a closer look at the gannets and the powerful surf. Be aware! This popular spot can get crowded, especially during peak season and around sunset. Arriving early is strongly recommended to secure a parking space and avoid any disappointment. The walk to the lookout is short and accessible, making it suitable for most visitors.

Its a very beautiful and peaceful place to go for a nice day trip from Auckland. The walking trail is short so not much to walk. Plus the views are amazing... And you can park your car and watch the beach while sitting in the car thats the best part.
Pinanki G — Google review
It’s beautiful!! Nothing more wonderful than seeing animals in the wild 💗 *I’m shocked by the lack of culture from some people. There are clean, well-maintained public bathrooms in the parking areas, yet we still saw a pair of friends urinating right in the middle of the trail… unacceptable. Dogs are NOT allowed because they are potential predators of birds and because they leave their scent wherever they go, which can disrupt the ecosystem. If you can’t control your bladder, you should wear diapers and above all, if you can’t respect the rules of a national park, stay home.
Paloma V — Google review
The gannet colony is incredible to see up close. Thousands of gannet birds nest right on the cliffs, with stunning ocean views all around. Perfect place for a peaceful walk, photography, or just soaking in nature’s magic.

Muriwai's gannet colony is a one hour drive from the centre of Auckland. Next to the car park, a short walking track leads to a viewing platform. The gannet colony at the south end of Muriwai is well worth a visit between October and February. The Muriwai Gannet Colony is one of only 3 places in NZ where they nest on the mainland (normally they are nesting on islands)

Enjoyed our visit today in January. Beautiful weather, definitely needed a hat and sunscreen. Easy parking at lot, then a short concreted wide path, most of the way, a short dip through shaded bush to the timber viewing platforms. Ocean view was gorgeous. Interesting to see so many fluffy baby gannets being looked after by their mums. Few birds sitting on nests. Strong smell of guano, but not unbearable. Perfect beach for a dog get together🙌 check the dates, cause in high summer off lead dogs are only allowed at certain times. The water is nice and warm & it’s a pleasant spot to play. Kid and dog friendly, toilets easily accessible and a spot to buy coffee. Big enough to go for a walk in the beach too

I absolutely love early morning walks here. It’s almost 6km end to end return from the bridge to the Scout Hall return, or take a small detour to pick up a coffee on the main street). Check the tides before you go as at high tide some parts are cut off. (If you get there and it’s high tide just nip across the road to the estuary walk).

Over the last 3 years I've taken over 60 people fishing on Offshore Adventures and everyone has raved about the experience. It's a great spot for families to explore, with excellent customer service and easy parking. Visiting early allows for a leisurely stroll through beautifully shaded pathways adorned with quirky signage and clever displays. The art collection is captivating, and the gardens are beautiful. There are plenty of cool sculptures and artworks both indoors and outdoors to discover.
Amazing place, beautiful gardens and sculptures. Definitely give yourself a an hour or two to take everything in. The indoor gallery was sensory overload, but in a good way 😅 just so much to take in all at once.

Worth a visit if you're in the vicinity and looking for something different. Do check online for potential ticket discounts beforehand. Overall, a pleasant experience, but not a destination I'd go significantly out of my way for.
Binky T — Google review
We had seen Sculptureum advertised and made it our mission as a birthday treat to visit from the south island. Having been to a handful of other sculpture parks and being very interested in sculpture, I would say we had certain expectations. The place is set out in two halves with a lovely shop and restaurant in the middle. We were recommended to visit the front outdoor area first. A beautifully laid out garden that twists and turns with different areas within it to reveal art. However it would be fair to say we were extremely disappointed by what was in there, very generic items and an awful lot of boards with art quotes on. More of a quotetorium!)keep reading!) Having come through there we came out a little flat, and not so hopeful about the indoor gallery, but we were wrong. This included a large and eclectic array of mostly but not exclusively 3d objects. Fascinating and interesting, and we would highly recommend it. If you are expecting to see the usual names, don’t go, but if you are open to something else, I’m sure there is something for everyone there. I would liken it to the victorians who would go on the grand tour and buy art they liked. That seems to be what has happened here and it is quite refreshing and a little bit different. Go see for yourself.

This place is awesome. The gardens and sculptures are incredible and there is such a diverse range. I especially loved the animals. It's easy to tell how loved and looked after they are (something very important to me) and they are just gorgeous. Was extra lucky to get to meet the Tortoises while I was there. Highly recommend 😊

It was an awesome & very calming experience. Great weather for meandering around the palm groves to admire all the brilliant sculptures. Finally inside to view the art shop & gallery then more fun gardens for both adults and children outside. A delicious Rośe to top it off! Highly recommend

This is an absolutely wonderful roughly two hour experience with a private garden and art museum. The eye for architecture and love put into curating this experience made for a wonderful visit and one we highly recommend. The wild flowers, palms, stones, and sculptures were favorites. Thank you to all who put so much work creating and sustaining the Sculptureum. Save time to eat at the highly acclaimed restaurant and make the most of your holiday!

Sculptureum Matakana is hands down one of the most captivating art destinations I’ve experienced in New Zealand! This enchanting blend of sculpture gardens, galleries, and lush landscapes offers a feast for the senses, leaving visitors in awe at every turn. The sprawling grounds feature over 300 artworks seamlessly integrated into vibrant tropical gardens. From bold contemporary pieces to whimsical classical sculptures, the diversity is astounding. The mirror and reflection based installations were a standout playing with light and perspective in the most mesmerizing way. One of my favorite spots was the vineyard-facing sculpture area, where gleaming metallic artworks cast dreamy reflections against the greenery. The indoor galleries are equally impressive, showcasing vivid avian sculptures, surreal paintings, and thought-provoking modern art. The staff were incredibly welcoming, offering insights into the stories behind key pieces (like the giant pink snail an unexpected highlight!). Practical tips: ✔ Allow 2–3 hours to fully explore—every corner holds a new surprise. ✔ The onsite café is perfect for a coffee break amid the art. ✔ Photography lovers will adore the interactive installations. The only "downside"? I didn’t want to leave! The ticket price is reasonable for the quality and scale of the exhibits, and the gift shop offers unique artistic souvenirs. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply seeking inspiration, Sculptureum delivers magic. Already planning my return!

Goat Island Marine Reserve, located just 3km from Leigh, is a 547-hectare nature preserve established in 1975 as New Zealand's first marine reserve. The area offers opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and trail hikes along the beach. Visitors can experience an abundance of marine life such as snapper, blue maomao, and stripy parore in the crystal-clear waters.
A beautiful spot on the north shore. Go early to get a parking place and a place to sit and relax on the beach before the crowds arrive. It's very popular for divers and for snorkeling. Clear pristine water and stunning scenery. There is snorkeling equipment for hire. Take your own food and drinks.

Such a beautiful place to visit. Please please please do not disturb the marine life. We saw an octopus and kina. People are trying to poke it. Just let them be and appreciate the experience. Lots of things to do (snorkelling and stuff) for water lovers.
Ei M — Google review
Goat Island Marine Reserve is absolutely beautiful even on a rainy day! The water is so clear, and you can see lots of fish even from the shore. It’s a perfect spot for snorkeling or just relaxing and enjoying the view. The atmosphere is peaceful, and it feels like a little paradise surrounded by nature. Highly recommend bringing some snacks and spending a few hours here—it’s such a special place!

Loved it. Amazing spot to snorkel, my daughter is still talking about it weeks later. It does get ridiculously busy, and those glass bottom canoes that you can rent are really annoying in the middle of the busiest entrance point, it was knocking kids over. But we did have an amazing time but you have to have a perfect day weather wise and get there really early.

I went on a school trip with the students and absolutely enjoyed the outdoor classroom learning experience. Thank you to all the marine biologists working at the marine reserve center. They shared wonderful and valuable knowledge with our young learners, creating lasting memories.

You've got to go to Goat Island! It's an amazing marine reserve, perfect for snorkeling. You'll be surrounded by so many friendly fish right off the shore. If you don't want to get wet, the glass-bottom boat tour is great too. A fantastic spot to see incredible marine life. Highly recommend!

Beautiful landscape and only just over an hour from Auckland. Lots of parking, clean toilets and outdoor shower. Go for a leisurely walk along the beach and climb around the trees and rocks to view the ocean. Many different bird life on the beach and nesting in the trees. Vast, waterside sculpture park with major installations by artists like Anish Kapoor & Eric Orr.
If you ever get the chance to visit Gibbs farm-Go for it. Pack a picnic lunch and walk around the sculptures at your leisure, the view towards the Kaipara harbour and farmland are pleasing and the sculptures at different angles and distances appear to morph into something else. The exotic animals dotted around also make it more exciting, we were admiring an emu from afar, then we started back on our walk and it started to follow. Another exciting encounter, an emu was running and we were in its path, looked like it was coming straight for us when it quickly changed direction.

It was a fantastic experience, sun shining enables us to walk around, seeing every spectacular giant sculptures in different angles and watching some animals running wildly around, and to enjoy a picnic sold on food trucks at place (ravioli is a must-try!). A great art museum and zoo for family and couple trip, highly recommend.

Gibbs Farm offers beautiful views of hills, water, and XXL sculptures. The alpacas are a highlight, and the grounds are nice but have plenty of animal droppings—wear shoes that can handle dirt. There’s one coffee truck and four portaloo. It’s best to arrive early for closer parking before the loop sculpture trail. Bring a picnic mat and lunch. 🥪 🦙 🦙

Visitors have praised the professional and thorough instruction provided by Tony during private lessons. The school also organizes women's surf and yoga retreat weekends, offering glamping accommodation, delicious food, and excellent yoga sessions.
First of all, this is a very unique choice for a birthday party! And this surfing school might be the best in Auckland! At first, I encountered some problems when making the reservation, but the managers solved them all perfectly for me! And through the email communication, I could feel the school's values and the positive attitude towards guests! They make you feel that even if it's windy or rainy, it's no big deal! This made me feel very at ease! Today's birthday party was a great success. The coaches were very professional, and their physiques were excellent! Their humor and positivity also influenced our birthday guests! I highly recommend this school! Moreover, when we met the coaches at the beach, their setup was very impressive! They had their own brand flags and tents, as well as professional surfing suits, and many different sizes of surfboards. They brought a whole carload of surfboards!

Ocean Beach

Went here after I did the Te Whara track and it was just stunning. Beautiful weather and the beach is approachable and accessible. Many different areas to climb and access. There's a part where you can climb over the rocks that you should wear shoes for that because I did not and it hurt my feet! But you overlook the vast blue ocean and can see parts of the Te Whara track as well as the many islands that surround this beach. Absolutely amazing experience and would list as a must-do if you're ever in the area.

Great beach for a walk and a climb up the sand dune at the end. Beware if swimming, as there are rips and big waves.
Dave S — Google review
Scenic beach, with plenty of space for a dip, sand dune to the left for boarding down or surfing. Stunning.
Che K — Google review
The long drive to Ocean Beach is worth it. The car parking area provides good parking, info board, and toilets. After a short, level walk through the dunes you reach the beach, which is great. Make sure you climb to the top of the headland (to the right as you look out to sea) for great views. Definitely worth a visit. 😁
Ian C — Google review
Very nice beach, even got a sand hill on the left side and you can try to get over it and get to another beach next to it. There is one time that a lifeguard came down from the watch house when he saw me I went deep into the sea, I met him when I swam back and that's when I know he came down because he thought I would got drowned, and just one or two weeks before that a teenage boy drowned there. Other than this story this beach is great, as long as you don't go swim deep at night there is a good possibility people can see you if you are in real danger. The sands are white and fine. 5/5 would recommend

The Kauri Museum in Matakohe is a fascinating attraction that showcases the history of pioneers and their use of the kauri tree and its gum for various purposes like furniture and lighting. The museum also features a 19th-century church and schoolhouse with kauri frames, as well as beautiful heritage roses that attract visitors in spring.
Extremely well laid out. Displays that include sights, sounds, smell and movement - affordable range in gift shop too! Great cafe across the road. Allow at least 2 hours here.
Joanne L — Google review
Thought this would be typical average attraction and 100% wrong! Incredibly well done and spent hours looking at some amazing displays of New Zealand timber & general history and awesomely massive slabs of timber some older than 30,000 years old. Grandad would have been in seventh heaven had he had the opportunity to see it.
Noel — Google review
A fantastic museum documenting the relationship between the people of New Zealand and one of the oldest and grandest species of tree on the planet. Their work to preserve this species of tree is like nothing else I've ever seen and this museum gives context to everything they're doing in New Zealand to protect this mighty tree. It's absolutely worth a visit, and there's a fascinating exhibition on the gum (resin) produced by the tree and the importance of that too.
David J — Google review
This is an absolute must see if you have any appreciation of the hard work and sacrifices made by our forebearers. The displays are second to none, with the utmost care and detail. Allow at least 2 hours to see it all.
Sandy B — Google review
Wow! The Kauri Museum exceeded our expectations! It's best to allow at least an hour as there is quite a lot of information. There are a few sections, including the largest Kauri tree wood in the centre of the museum and histories surrounding Kauri tree e.g. furniture, logging, boats, and yatch, Kauri gum, and more. The ticket cost $25 per adult and is valid for two days (so if you couldn't complete your visit today, you can come back tomorrow).
JOYNME L — Google review
Hi too all. I would have spent at least a full day looking through the Kauri Museum and could have spent many hrs looking in greater detail and many of the exhibits on show. I think fir a first time visitor a full day needs to be spent too only look at every exhibit . I think also that if you where to return the next day as your ticket is valid for 2 days you could do half of the exhibits and stopped too read the extremely detailed description of most exhibits. I thoughly enjoyed seeing and learning of the lives and cultural of the Portland's and the people going back I to history for approximately 200 yrs and quite possibly many more Huddersfield of years back too the time of Gonda land and how the north lands looked over the millions of yrs until today. I also spent a long time in the Gift shop as you leave the Kauri Museum. I purchased many items and could have spent $1000.00 quite easily as many things available from coasters too valuable jewellery and more. I left with my purchased ite s too return to my accommodation approx 50/100 mtrs down the road that I must say meet beyond my expectations would wonderful friendly couple who serve exceedingly tasting breakfast & Dinner there is well appointed rooms and you emeditialy feel at home in a very well presented location and accommodation The property is called Matakohe House. I have nothing but to say you must spend a minimum of 2/3 Nights too full enjoy the aera and relax and unwind I think even a week would be perfect as then all exploying of the local area can be enjoyed at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed. I can not finish without saying that I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and stay the days spent had I more time I would have and enjoyed more relaxing time and totally relaxed and left feeling like a new Man.
Chris H — Google review
This has to be one of the best museums in New Zealand! You need to allow a full day to really appreciate all the different exhibits, or make the most of the two-day pass, if you can. There are so many different facets of the kauri industry that are covered, with working models which make the history really come alive. The house exhibits also showed life in those times. The lifelike mannequins of local entities made it all the more interesting. A visit to the Gumdiggers Cafe is also a must. There is also an art shop which displays work from local artists for sale. Lots of interesting work for sale.
Donna S — Google review
One of the few "must visit" museums that really is worth a visit. Beautiful displays of how Kauri were felled and processed, great examples of what was manufactured from it. But buy your Kauri souvenirs elsewhere. The prices in the gift shop are eye wateringly steep! Cafe is very good.

We had the most wonderful three days at Bream Coast Head Walks. The lodge was immaculate and so incredibly cosy and relaxing and the care from Claire was incredible. Claire set us up with up to date information about the walk options and even delivered us to the walks and picked us up afterwards! Extra touches like sweet, juicy watermelon after a hot day completed the care package! The food was exquisite and we ate every meal in the outdoor setting together. So many laughs, deep chats and a shared sense of adventure. The walks were challenging but do-able for a group of 40 something mums. I could not recommend this more - if in doubt, just book it in and bring a group of fun friends - it will make life time memories and some spectacular photos of the stunning views from on top the local mountains!

An amazing place even with bad weather! Great food, accommodation and help from Claire the host. During our stay of 2 nights we enjoyed wonderful meals including pre dinner nibbles, lunches and desserts. Claire makes it so easy for us to enjoy the meals with minimal preparation. Our group of 11 wanted to split into half and go on 2 different walks. Claire was more than helpful and dropped the 2 groups to different places at different times. You won't be disappointed walking in this region and staying at Claire's lodge....

I hike in 2015 and I'm still dreaming about it. The food was better than any 5 star restaurant. The views were amazing to have a beach all to yourself for miles were incredible. im not sure what was better the hike or coming back and soaking in the tub and having an amazing dinner. Finally the host went above and beyond. I forgot my sleep bag and she provided me blankets. One day after a hot hike she picked me up and had a popsicle waiting for me. She had no problem letting me stay longer when my surfing trip was canceled. The fact that one person on here gave them a score of a 1 makes me sick. I can only assume it was by mistake

Waipu Caves is a popular tourist attraction located in Northland, New Zealand. The caves feature stunning rock formations made of karst limestone, including stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors can also observe shimmering glow worms that light up the dark cave environment. To reach the main attraction, visitors must navigate a walking track through shallow water that requires some bending and knee-deep wading. It's recommended to bring sturdy shoes that can handle getting wet and a good torch for visibility.
Free cave to see the Glowworms. Easy access, maybe a five minute walk total to see them. You can see them during daylight! Water came ankle deep, not too cold. Recommend!
Aurélie C — Google review
Easy to access and a great spot to bring the family. Don’t forget to bring a torch, and wear footwear that can get wet like strapped sandals – the cave floor has streams running through. Fun little adventure and worth the visit
Eric S — Google review
This place is awesome! To see the glow worms for free! They are close to the parking lot! You just have to be careful, because it is very slippery, and also, make sure you take flashlights or enough charge on your cellphone. Because it is very dark in there. Also, make sure you walk in the water instead of the rock because it is less slippery in the water. Highly recommended that you take shoes or something, because the water gets as high as the knee or higher.
Obie P — Google review
Great place with very friendly staff. The tour let's you see formations and glowworms up close, and there are some very nice and scenic hiking trails.
Lance A — Google review
Spectacular demonstration of nature. Amazing place to drive to. The cave is amazing to walk through and explore, it feels like being in the Jungle Book. Plus, it's free. Amazing.
Gordon R — Google review
Have a flashlight and don't go right after a heavy rain. We were able to walk through the cave on the rocks and through the water (not too cold) around a bend so we couldn't see the light from the entrance and got to see glow worms for free!
Aman M — Google review
I *love* this place. Please pick up after yourself. Please pick up any trash you see and haul it out. Please don't feed the horses. Bring water shoes, shorts or swimming suit, and two sources of light in case one goes out! Glow worms, enormous spiders, eels, and amazing cave formations await you! Please don't take any unnecessary risks. Not worth it! Be sure to go in the caves at *night*. Might not think it would matter because it's a cave, but it does! Trust me on this. And turn your headlamps off *often* to see the glow worms, but please don't touch them or their silk strands. 🙏
Stephen C — Google review
Amazing! Stunning! Go deep in the cave to experience something magical. You definitely should wear flip flops or watershoes. The water will reach knee hight. It is a free cave with amazing glowworms. I stayed approximately 1.5h in the cave.

We spend 4-5 months at Town Basin Marina each year. We have done this for the past 6 years now, and it feels like home. You couldn't ask for a nicer place to have your boat. We can walk to groceries, boat shops, yoga and plates classes, restaurants, and a nearby pottery studio! The scenery is beautiful. There is a 3km walking loop around the marina that we use almost daily. This place is magical. The Marina workers have become great friends. Whagarei, we love it here!

A great place to spend spare time walking between the buildings and the boats. Colourful and vibrant with tourists looking at the sights and buying food. I expected the food at the restaurant I chose to buy lunch at to cost more. Clapham's Clock Museum is a must-see. Well maintained public toilets. Parking the car nearby can be a problem, some is pay parking, and some 2 hour.

A lovely children's playground plus walkway/path along river. Lots of shops and eateries to choose from. Art gallery and a separate hand blown glass shop/ showroom all free of charge. A clock gallery with lots of interesting clocks, there us a cover charge. Outdoor massive sun dial and a enclosed mechanical clock with moving parts and large balls that drop on the hour. Whangarei Falls, located in the Whangarei Scenic Reserve on the Hatea River in New Zealand, is a stunning 85-foot waterfall that attracts many visitors. The falls can be viewed from the top with a short walk to a lookout point, but for the best views, it's recommended to take a walk down through the lush bush to the bottom. During warmer weather, visitors may have the opportunity to swim in the large pool at the base of the falls.

we had the most amazing afternoon, we pushed our comfort levels. a great family activity for mum, dad, 11 and 9yr old girls.. nice picnic areas and you can take your own picnic lunch. the amount of people on the course is well controlled so there is very little wait time. staff were friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. well maintained facility that has been developed alot since our last visit a few years ago. highly recommended for a family outing.

No matter what age this is a fun experience for all. Great firm, calm, instructions and guidance from the owners. A good range of “runs” to try based on your height. The BEST and most wonderful thing to see is the confidence and pride seen in those who try and succeed from the youngest child to an older less confident person. Great place to go with mates or office/work team.

We took our 3 1/2 and 7 year old girls here with some family and had a great time. The French management with their obvious attention to families as well as adult clientele was heartening. The hardware was top quality, well maintained, as well as the supplied harnesses and helmets. The permanent harness tether was a great system which I had not used before. There are simple long drop style toilets, picnic benches and lots of cool shade perfect on the hot sunny day when we were there. The Black Stump Cafe on the main road nearby is a good spot for lunch with good coffee and fresh produce available. I will definitely recommend this place to others. It caters well to all ages. My two year old nephew right up to grandparents found a challenge to suit their abilities.

We went here for a school camp trip and wow! Such a great place. Well at up and courses that challenge at all levels. The staff were wonderful and super encouraging for those who were struggling. They're there to bail you out too if needed. Forrest is a treat in itself. The bird life and the towering trees were breathtaking. Tucked up in a secluded area you really did feel like you were in a world of you own. I can't wait to go back

Great staff, great design and a beautiful setting make this a fantastic destination. The staff were friendly and engaging, and the rope courses were very well designed, catering to everyone from 2 year olds and up. The car park is small, but bookings are essential to take part so parking isn’t really an issue. There are port-a-loo style toilet facilities, and you will need to bring your own drinks and snacks.

All participants had a brilliant time. The initial tuition was thorough and everyone felt safe. A great place to visit if living in or visiting Whangarei. I do recommend booking in advance as groups that hadn't were being turned away. The picnic tables need some maintenance but everything else was perfect.

We visited the Adventure Forest on our way back to Auckland from our short stay in Bay of Islands. This place is AWESOME!!! Our girls had an absolute blast and the time and money spend there was absolutely worth it. Park was designed well and super easy to follow. Our girls mentioned that it was one of their highlights from our entire trip. Definitely go there again when we visit the area!

Great day out with the kids - highly recommended. A mixture of nature, fear and exhilaration as each successive challenge is completed. The courses are set up for littlies to bigger kids by height and get harder as they progress, with most finishing with a zip line ride to the ground. We spent three hours here and thought the service and training was perfect. Will return again when the kids are taller for more high jinks.
