Albany's Historic Whaling Station

Albany's Historic Whaling Station is a unique tourist attraction in Australia that provides an educational insight into the country's whaling history. It features interactive displays, preserved skeletons, and a whaling ship that accurately portrays life in the early 1900s. The facilities have been well-preserved and presented to provide visitors with an exceptional experience. In addition to its historical significance, this attraction showcases the importance of protecting marine life today.
I really wasn't sure I would enjoy a tour of this place given the somewhat dark subject matter but am I ever glad I went! It was utterly fascinating and compelling. You get the complete picture of life on an actual whale chaser vessel, the history and scale of the station itself, numerous displays of the machinery, artifacts and actual whale skeletons (the "Pygmy" Blue Whale skeleton has to be seen to get a true picture of the sheer size of these creatures!) Comfort yourself in the knowledge that whaling in nearly all parts of the world is no longer practiced, and go check this place out. From history buffs to the casual observer, it is well worth your time and the entry fee.

We stopped by here for coffee and a quick bite while waiting for the rain to clear — we came specifically to try and spot whales from the shore. Luckily, the rain started to ease, so we walked outside and enjoyed the stunning view. We were able to spot whales from a distance — they appeared from time to time, and even though they were far away, we could still see them clearly enough. A lovely and peaceful experience!

The Historic Whaling Station in Albany is a fascinating and unique attraction that offers a deep dive into an important part of Western Australia’s history. Once a fully operational whaling station, it has been carefully preserved and transformed into an educational museum and cultural site. The experience starts with a well-structured self-guided tour through the old processing factory, where you learn about the history of whaling, how it shaped Albany’s economy, and the impact it had on both people and the environment. The displays are detailed and engaging, with original machinery, artifacts, photographs, and short films that bring the story to life. One of the highlights is being able to step inside a fully restored whaling ship something you won’t find anywhere else in Australia. It gives you a real sense of what life at sea was like for the crews who worked here. Kids and adults alike will find it eye-opening. The site has evolved beyond just the history of whaling. There are beautifully maintained gardens, a wildlife park with Australian animals, and a wildflower display, making it a well-rounded experience for families. The views from the grounds overlooking King George Sound are spectacular, and there are picnic areas where you can relax and take it all in. Practical info: There is an entry fee, but it’s excellent value given how much there is to see and do you could easily spend a few hours here. There’s also a café and gift shop with plenty of options for refreshments and souvenirs. Parking is convenient and included in the ticket price. Overall, the Historic Whaling Station is an absolute must-visit in Albany. It’s both educational and moving shedding light on a tough industry that was once central to the region, while also celebrating how far we’ve come in marine conservation. A visit here leaves you with a deep appreciation for Albany’s history and its incredible coastline.

Barely sure where to begin but this place is a disgrace. I was interested in the history enough to go, but i assumed they would be anti-whaling (along with the rest of the civilised world) and the atrocities of the past would be acknowledged. Like when you go to any site of national shame or dark history. I thought it was obvious that this was a place of deep shame for Albany? And a site like this is a place that would teach people about the towns dark history with an emphasis on conservation in the future? Unlike other reviewers I don’t mind the price, as long as any proceeds go toward amending past injustices by donating to whale conservation efforts around the world. It is the absolute LEAST you can do for the destruction caused. I have read the dozens of other reviews also pointing out how they are glorifying whaling, and the organisations response is essentially that they are neutral and take no stand? Let people ‘make up their own minds’ to quote on WHALING? Did i read that right? Taking no sides in these sort of morally reprehensible atrocities IS actually taking a side. You can hide behind the pretence of ‘neutrality’ and ‘factuality’ all you like, it is INCREDIBLY clear where you stand. Your exhibitions explore how awful it was for the workers losing their jobs, paint green peace and politicians as the villains for standing against such a disturbing and cruel industry, and consistently glorified the ‘whalers’ themselves. Exhibitions highlight the ‘beautiful art’ created using whale carcass, and you can buy it at the gift shop! (For a place that takes ‘no stance’ on the issue, you certainly have no problem selling whale oil and teeth, byproducts of this abhorrent industry). This is the SHAME of Albany. I have never seen anything like this. A true disgrace to modern Australia. Don’t believe me? Check out some of the attached pictures and how they frame everything. Particularly interesting use of the word ‘fortunately’ you will see in the first picture.

A beautiful walk down the stairs and sloped pathway to the blowholes (just be mindful of the walk back up!). The blowholes can be viewed from the path, or a short scramble across the rocks, although caution is advised, particularly with strong winds or sea spray.

Fantastic experience. Bit a walk dowhhill so need to be careful and while walking the big rocks. Otherwise the view and the experience was great. Even got a chance to spot a few baby hump backs

Had a Great experience to walk all the way down. Beautiful scenic views.. About 15~20 minutes one way walk. No toilet..
Rakibuzzaman S — Google review
fantastic views, and superb photo opportunities. the walk down is easy, walk back, not so much. Wear good shoes and be prepared for sore legs upon your return to the car!
Dustin V — Google review
Be prepared to walk on a sloppy trail from about 900 m. The scenery is beautiful. There are lots of warning signs for the safety of the visitor. It's not a good site for a young family to visit. (2024-09)
Ernest L — Google review
A pretty spot for photos but is was a long way down, and a longer way up, to find the blow hole wasn't blowing.
Kate K — Google review
The walk from the car park to the blowholes is about 10 minutes and there are steps. Lots of flies on the day that we visited. Beautiful experience- was extremely windy so be careful with younger kids.
Fatima — Google review
Although it's a beautiful walk trail but not very rewarding when it comes to reaching the ultimate destination 'The blow holes'. Water comes out of these holes only if the tides are high. We only listened gushing noises.

Castle Rock

Mentioned on
1 list
Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Geologic Formations
Castle Rock is a mountain peak with stunning panoramic views of both the ocean and countryside. Accessible via a skywalk, the hike to the top spans 2.2 kilometers and requires moderate fitness levels. However, scaling boulders and climbing a vertical ladder require dexterity and should be avoided by those who fear heights. The hike takes roughly 3.5 hours in total but is well worth it for the breathtaking view at the peak.
It's well worth the half hour or more walk for the view from the skywalk at the top of Castle Rock, especially on a clear day. The last little section could be slightly challenging for some but I say, it's worth the challenge. Highly recommend doing this walk if in the area.

Noon at 30'C is not the time to try to push an unfit overweight body carrying a 10kg rucksack up a 1.7km climb. Nearly gave up. Thought i was gonna throw up at several points. Heat stress and exhaustion. While plenty of folk skipped past in flip flops! Not a hard walk at all, just steps kill a person with short legs. View was ok. But not 'worth it' given it was a load of ex forest now made into dull farmland. Was prob fab for Aboriginal owners 200yrs back but not so much now. Nevermind 'move fast and break stuff' i advocate 'move slow and see stuff'. A benefit of being exceedingly slow was I saw alot more. Snake, 4 lizards, various birds etc. As they arent scared by the stomping feet :-) And DO NOT LEAVE LOO ROLL ANYWHERE! If you feel like giving up halfway, feel free. I wouldnt say it was 'worth it'.
Rica B — Google review
2 hrs up the yellow marked track and 1 hr down the hill. Avoid going up after 3 pm. Cause it will be very difficult and highly not safe to see the track on the way back in the dark. Please bring enough water. Avoid rainy or drizzling day. For wildlife and birds discovery, follow the blue marked track. Enjoy your visit. (2024-09)
Ernest L — Google review
Reasonably easy hike, when you get to the top there are two view options… one that is just a few metres walk and another where you climb rocks and a ladder to a lookout. If you can, take the second option and view from the top of the ladder… view is incredible!! Definitely a fun hike and worth it for the views.
Hannah — Google review
Great place worth visiting. 2 km hike up is just awesome and light. Great view from the top.
Kezang W — Google review
A wonderful walk! Last 130m I couldn’t do but many others have. All ages and abilities. Hardest bit is the uphill climb. Then you just need guts to climb the last bit…
Jenny B — Google review
It’s a wonderful 4.4 km hike with tree shades along the way. Going up the hill isn’t so easy but slow and steady you’ll get there . The view is worth the hike for sure .
Collins O — Google review
A short walk. Took me 1 1/2 hours with a stop at the top to admire the view. The walk is fairly steep with a few stairs and there is a ladder to climb to reach the lookout. Very windy so make sure you take a jacket. The views were incredible and well worth the hike.

Museums
The National Anzac Centre, opened in late 2014 to mark Albany's Anzac centenary commemorations, is a modern museum dedicated to honoring the Australian and New Zealand soldiers of World War I. The center features interactive exhibits and multimedia installations that provide a realistic and immersive experience. Situated overlooking the expansive body of water from which the troop ships departed, the museum offers compelling presentations that include individual stories alongside descriptions of larger war scenarios.
This is the second time I have visited the National Anzac Centre and it was just as good as I remembered. The centre is very interesting and informative and the grounds have a lot of history. If you get the chance to hear one of the volunteers outside talk about the history of the grounds, definitely listen in. Take the time to not only explore the centre, but also the buildings and grounds outside.

A mind-blowing extraordinary emotional experience. So many audio story's, interactive boards. Beautiful restored heritage buildings. Boardwalks and displays to meander thru. A must visit for everyone. Wear good shoes, and make sure camera has a full battery. Not a quick visit stop. A good half day min.
Kelly P — Google review
Sensational set up with various sections to visit, technology and interactive displays and stories were amazing. Wonderful grounds fantastic sihnage and history. An absolute MUST when in ALBANY
Carole T — Google review
A beautiful museum with amazing interactive exhibits dedicated to the WWI Anzacs. It's pearched high above Albany overlooking the harbour in King George Sound and in a magnificent park setting. It's a 30 minute mostly uphill walk from the town centre but there is plenty of on site car parking available. Definitely worth a visit
Adam G — Google review
Both outside in the grounds walking around and inside in the monument fills you with a sense of emotional in that it is impossible to think what the young individuals thought they were about to face in World War One. The journey inside that you take as one of those individuals is very well thought through with the various installations and displays added to by the views out into the bay where the convoy ships gathered before setting off. Definitely an Albany highlight that must be seen.
Shaun L — Google review
Well laid out and informative displays. Beautiful views over the harbour the Anzacs left from. Last entry 4pm but it shuts at 5pm.
Rob S — Google review
Superbly executed and a great tribute to the ANZACs. Don’t miss a side trip up the hill to the war memorial on Mount Clarence. They free to have provided by Wendy was also incredibly informative and engaging.

Really nice set up and some really moving stories to listen to. They have done an amazing job with putting it together. Spent longer then anticipated but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. You get a card with a soldiers story that you learn along your path and an audio guide to hear different stories of those who were out there. Great experience

Granite Skywalk, Castle Rock

Hiking Trails
The Granite Skywalk is a popular attraction located on top of Castle Rock, accessible via a challenging 2km hike and rock scramble. The walkway offers breathtaking panoramic views and is situated at an altitude of 670m. The path can be difficult at times, with narrow granite steps that can become slippery after rain. However, the stunning vistas from the top make it all worth it.
This place is incredibly beautiful! I didn’t do enough research before visiting the Granite Skywalk — I thought it was just another easy lookout you could reach by walking a few metres. Turns out, it’s a serious hike! The trail was much steeper than I expected, and I literally had to climb over big rocks to reach the summit. It was a tough but rewarding climb. When I finally made it to the top, the view was absolutely breathtaking. The platform is built around a massive rock, and from there, you get nearly a 180-degree panoramic view of the Porongurup National Park. It’s truly an unforgettable spot. I’m glad I did it, but next time I visit, I’ll definitely come more prepared for the hike!

Granite Skywalk – Castle Rock, Porongurup National Park We recently visited the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock and it was absolutely worth it! The hike itself was enjoyable, with beautiful bushland and plenty of spots to take a breather along the way. The final climb to the skywalk was a bit challenging, but once you reach the top the views are just incredible – honestly one of the best I’ve ever seen in WA. The lookout gives you a full panoramic view over the Porongurup Range, Stirling Ranges, and beyond. If you’re in the Albany or Denmark region, this is definitely a must-do. A bit of effort to get up there, but the reward at the top is next level. Highly recommended!
Noel P — Google review
The structure is good, there are toilets, barbecue areas, picnic tables, and plenty of carpark spaces. The trail is well built and marked, and offers an enjoyable hiking experience. At the end of the trail, there is a more accessible lookout. But for those looking for an extra challenge, there is another option as well. We saw kids and elderly people doing both. Just carry enough water, use trail shoes, a hat, and sunscreen… The final view is amazing and totally worth your effort. My husband and I are not the most fitness couple and we came back to our car in a little less than 2 hours. We paid $17 to access the park, but if you have plans to visit the natural bridge and the gap it will add an extra $17. So, our recommendation is to choose the weekly permit, because it costs $30.
Katy P — Google review
We visited the Granite Skywalk, and the climb was quite easy for me as I’m younger — it’s about a 2.2 km ascent. Definitely not for the faint-hearted, and you must bring a water bottle with you! Along the way, you’ll see the famous Balancing Rock, and shortly after, the trail enters a boulder field. From there, you climb into an outcrop and onto the viewing walkway, which includes a fun ladder climb. The views from the top are breathtaking, with sweeping panoramic scenery. The trail itself is beautiful, passing by massive fallen trees — one of which has a section cut out so you can walk right through it. A really neat, all-round experience and absolutely worth doing if you’re planning on a bit of hiking in Porongurup National Park.
Rushabh L — Google review
Pretty easy climb. Lots of kangaroos at the start. Do have to scramble up some rocks to get to the top but they have holds so it's pretty easy. Definitely recommend. Beautiful views
N — Google review
A good walk up the hill before getting there was well worth the effort. The view is extraordinary from the platforms. If you don't like heights, don't look down. Requires a bit of rock scrambling to get to the top platform, but achieveable by anyone who could climb a ladder.
J H — Google review
$17 for car day pass, pay at the electronic kiosk. Make a day of it as there are a few picnic tables as well as toilets. Didn't count them, but would be 1500+ steps. Don't let that put you off. A trek and a half up the level 4, 2k hike to the top. If you're a bit adventurous and a little nimble, the clamber over rocks and up the final ladder at the summit, rewards with views second to none. Just on an hour to the top at a leisurely pace and 35 mins back down, with around and hour at the summit. There is still a lower viewing platform should you not attempt the last 150m section. Make sure you secure your hats before going up top. Better perhaps if a couple of you could assist each other as needed. I rate the views with those from Ubirr in the NT's Kakadu. Take your time and even in winter take water, but please bring your bottles back. I would not advise for wheelchairs. There was plenty of parking, including areas for long vehicles and caravans. Had to head back as we were running out of light.

The Gap

Granite cleft with a lookout platform offering views of waves crashing against the cliffs.
When we visited The Gap and Natural Bridge, there was light rain and strong wind, but we were still very impressed. The scenery was absolutely stunning — a powerful reminder of nature’s raw beauty. Despite the weather, it was well worth the stop.

Absolutely mental viewing platform over some amazing ocean and rocky cliffs. The warnings to stay on the path and how lethal this coast is, is no joke. There is a historical mention is a reduce that occurred odd this coast which is nothing short of a miracle. The coastline here in incredible and deadly. Absolutely stunning to view from the safety of the paths and hold onto your phones!!

The Gap in Albany is an absolutely iconic and unreal natural attraction a place that makes you stop, breathe, and simply admire the power and beauty of Western Australia’s coastline. Standing on the viewing platform, you get a truly breathtaking view of the rugged cliffs, the turquoise ocean crashing below, and in the distance, the outline of mountains. It’s one of those sights that really reminds you how special WA is. The viewing platform is built right out over the rocks, giving you a safe yet thrilling perspective of the waves smashing against the cliffs. The engineering is impressive and makes it accessible for everyone while still allowing you to feel close to nature’s raw energy. What struck me most is how this spot shows off the unmatched beauty of WA beaches. The combination of white sand, crystal-clear water, and dramatic rocky coastline really does feel like paradise on earth. It’s one of those places you’ll carry in your memory long after your visit. Like many other sites in the area, there is paid parking currently $17 per car. It’s worth mentioning that there’s plenty of parking available, which makes the visit convenient and hassle free, especially if you’re travelling with family. The site is also well maintained, with clear paths and facilities nearby. If you’re exploring Albany or the Great Southern region, The Gap is an absolute must-see. It’s not just a quick stop; it’s a reminder of the incredible natural wonders that Western Australia has to offer.

During our visit to The Gap and Natural Bridge in Albany, WA, we encountered light rain and strong winds, but the experience was still nothing short of spectacular. The scenery was breathtaking, showcasing the raw beauty of nature in a way that left us in awe. The Gap, in particular, is a must-see attraction. Standing on the viewing platform directly above the ocean, we felt the immense power of the waves crashing against the dramatic cliffs below. The platform itself is well-constructed and safe, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the stunning views without any concerns. Despite the weather, our stop at The Gap and Natural Bridge was absolutely worth it, highlighting the incredible coastline of Western Australia. This is a destination that truly captures the essence of nature's beauty and is highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!

Absolutely amazing place. We visited early September and spend a valuable time over there. The natural bridge is wonderful. The Authorities have created this place wonderfully all credits to them. Such a wonderful and breathtaking place. ❤️❤️

Impressive view and modern architecture of the highest standard. Something for both nature and architecture lovers. Note, parking here is not free (17 AUS$), however the ticket is valid for the whole park (e.g. Stony Hill, Blowhole, ...). A little insider tip: the sunset is magnificent from here.

There are toilets, a carpark and an amazing structure that connects The Gap and the Natural Bridge. And I don't need to say that the view is astonishing and breathtaking, do I? In my opinion, totally worth your time and money. It costs $17, but if you have plans to visit other national park attractions, such as the Castle Rock, I recommend you to buy the weekly permit ($30).

An absolutely breathtaking experience at The Gap and Natural Bridge in Albany! The power of the ocean crashing against the cliffs is truly awe-inspiring — nature at its rawest and most beautiful. The viewing platforms are safe, modern, and perfectly designed to let you feel the force of the wind and waves up close without any danger. It was a bit cold and windy (as it should be in a place like this!), but that only made the atmosphere more dramatic and unforgettable. Our kids loved it — they said it felt like standing on the edge of the world. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Great Southern region — this spot perfectly shows how wild and majestic Western Australia can be!

Desert Mounted Corps Memorial

Perched atop Mount Clarence, the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial pays homage to the soldiers who departed from Albany to fight in World War I. The monument stands as a tribute to those who fought at Gallipoli and offers a significant historical backdrop. Visitors can access the site by vehicle or stairs and explore the small forest of Lone Pine seedlings nearby. While parking is limited at the top, it's worth visiting for its historical significance and participation in Albany's annual Anzac Dawn Service.
Such an impactful way to remember the sacrifice so many men and women made to ensure we enjoy the liberties we have today! The quotes on the signboards as you ascend the stairs to the monument provide context for the experience at the time. The effort required to reach the monument (our small sacrifice) helps focus one's thoughts on the larger recognition intended.

Desert Mounted Corps Memorial – Albany, WA A very moving and beautifully maintained memorial overlooking Albany. The statue and plaques give a deep sense of history, and the views from the top are absolutely stunning, with a full panorama of the town and coastline. It’s a peaceful spot to reflect and appreciate the sacrifices made, while also enjoying one of the best lookouts in Albany. Well worth the visit – both for the history and the scenery.

Spectacular views and amazing monument. Credit to all who manage this area. So well looked after and constantly evolving. Great mountain bike and hiking tracks around too. You won't be disappointed

Whoever designed this site did a really good job. The long walk up to the monument is impressive and the views are quite spectacular. Quite captivating which is tremendous respect for what it represents. We actually came during night time, some ambient light but also twilight hours add a lot of character.

A lovely memorial to visit while in Albany within the Heritage Centre. Very well designed, beautifully kept, great views from the viewing platform behind the monument of the stunning scenery. A must visit while there to honour the brave soldiers and their mounts who fought in the wars
Lesley-Jane W — Google review
This is a large scale monument located at the end of Apex Drive at Mt. Clarence in the Albany Heritage Park. There is a car park at the bottom of a long set of steps that take visitors up to the Memorial. What you find is a bronze replica originally erected at Port Said, Egypt. The replica was created and erected here in 1964 as part of an overall testimony to ANZAC found throughout the Albany Heritage Park. What you see are two bronze soldiers and horses in action, likely representing Australia and New Zealand brothers in arms during WWI action (1916-18). The bronze are atop a rectangular shaped pillar. There is open space around with views of the King George Sound, marina and other areas around Albany as well.

Great lookout close to town center. Anzac memorial included. Worth the trip ! Pleny of parking, plenty of benches to chill out & eat something for tourists.

Came across this little gem today. Sam was informative and extremely helpful, had a great tasting session of their wines and lunch was delicious and the views outstanding! Would recommend definitely as a place to stop and have lunch and just unwind for a while.

This is a winery and cellar door along Porongurup Road in the national park area that is open for wine tastings from 11am to 5pm (Thursdays to Sundays). We made a stop here after hiking in the national park and before making way back to Albany and enjoyed trying a couple of their rieslings and late harvest wine along with very good almond & orange and sticky date slices, perfect for an afternoon wine and dessert stop. Purchased a bottle of their Riesling to take back and enjoy at our apartment rental in Albany. Slightly crispy and fruity with a bit of sweetness to balance out the wine, this was a very enjoyable Riesling, one we would gladly return to purchase additional bottles next time we are able to visit the area.

We arrived after our hike and were warmly welcomed despite not having a booking. We had a delightful experience here. We sampled several wines and were particularly fond of the savion blanch. It was my favorite savion blanch that we tried in Australia. We also enjoyed a tasting plate, which was exquisite. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth stopping by.

Very lovely place to visit for a drink or just to enjoy the scenery. The photo doesn't do it justice, the view is amazing! The riesling and rosé we had was exceptional and the host was very friendly and knowledgeable. Thanks for the lovely experience!

Passed this place on the way to the Granite Skywalk and took the opportunity to pop in to sample the wines on offer. Had a warm welcome from the host Eugene who guided us through his selection of wines. I enjoyed the Shiraz and the tawny port. Tastings are free, but if you don't buy a bottle, please put a donation in the charity tin.

Porongurup National Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Parks
Ancient granite domes laced with paths & nature trails, plus picnic areas & a viewing platform.
The Porongurup National Park is situated around 50 km north of Albany and makes for a fun day of hiking through mature Karri tree forests and up mountain sides dotted with huge ancient granite boulders. Entry is AUD$17 per standard vehicle or with a Park Pass. We visited two sections on the NP on the same day, starting early at the Castle Rock section in the east. From the Castle Rock carpark, there is a popular and fairly easy trail leading up to the Granite SkyWalk platform. Some impressive Karri trees on this trail, a unique Balancing Rock and then the skywalk platform which is free to access for panoramic views of the forests below and landscapes in the distance. We then made way to the western side of the NP later in the morning and completed the Devil's Slide trail from The Tree In The Rock carpark. This was a challenging yet very rewarding hike with stunning views easily rivalling those at Granite SkyWalk. Liked the look of the Nancy's Peak trail as well and would aim to tackle this one next time around. These trails require more time, fitness, proper walking shoes and are more exposed to the elements. After completing our morning hikes, we stopped by a couple of the wineries that had open Cellar Doors back on Castle Rock Road to pick up a couple bottles of wine to enjoy at our apartment rental back in Albany. This completed a very rewarding day out hiking in Porongurup NP, a great day trip option for those staying in Albany or within convenient driving range of the Park.

Visited the park on a weekday morning. It was peaceful. Took about 30 to 40mins drive from Albany to the park. Ticket price is at $17 for a car for a day. There is another trail (Walitj Meil Trail). Saw a few locals doing that trail when I was coming down from it. It's mostly flat ground for this trail.

Cosy Corner is a delightful beach with numerous access points and shaded parking under the peppy trees. There is a handicapped ♿️ bay close to the toilet and BBQ area. The sand is white and clean and the water a delightful colour! It is a 4km return journey from carpark to the end (walking to the left to the end and back) Enjoy exploring the rock pools! 🪨 Toilet facilities are long drop but fine and clean. 🚻 There is also a shower and tap for a rinse off. 🚿 There are a few BBQ areas with benches too and plenty of bins, which is nice. There is a section where 4wd can drive on too. (To the right)

This is a lovely beach, so picturesque. Great views out distant islands and reefs. There’s a camp area for tents and a separate one for vans etc. Good toilets, long drops, bins and an Elsan point. It’s a dirt road off the tarmac which is in good condition but a bit muddy when it rains

Stunning quiet beach, unsealed drive up to the parking area with a short walk over the dune and through the bush to the sandy beach. White pristine sand and clear refreshing water. Great place for a dip or to spend a whole day.

Walked a bunch of the Bibbulmun track first to Dingo Beach next day towards Albany to Mutton Bird beach and Shelter Island. Water temperature at Dingo was pleasant. Mutton Bird was freezing!🥶 Only downside was we got totally invaded by ants one night. And lots of bandicoots (quendas)
Richard B — Google review
Beautiful beach, quite long, good surfing spot, dog friendly, limited parking, some camping available.
Flibber M — Google review
This is a lovely place to rest and free camp for a few days. The toilets are clean and well maintained however the dump point is a disgrace and a potential health problem. Some of our friendly caravaners have left it a bloody mess. Shame on the the caraveners responsible for this as it puts the problem of cleaning this asset on other caravaners like us. If we don't look after these facilities that ratepayers provide for us then there is always the chance of it being taken away. On a positive note the beaches are beautiful and the roads are well maintained. Thank you to the regional council and their workers. The Cosy Corner cafe is a short walk away but only opened from Wednesday to Sunday.
John W — Google review
This is where you can't overnight, cosy corner west is day use only. East cosy corner is where you can stay a few days, no power or water but if you are able to get a spot, (caravan or tent) you probably want to stay forever, sorry no pictures

A great place to call in for lunch en route back to Perth town. A grand building in a lovely setting in the middle of Mt Barker. There is a small lunchtime menu and we shared a medium and a large. The menu did say that the large came with garlic bread. Ours never materialised. Maybe next time.

This is a winery situated along the Albany Highway in Mt. Barker. This was the first winery and cellar door in the region back in 1975. Today you'll find a cellar door and cafe open from 10am to 4pm daily if interested in a bit of wine and food tasting while in the area. We recently passed by near closing time to grab a bottle of the Three Lion Riesling to enjoy back at our apartment rental in Albany. On the whole, it was pretty good, light, a bit crispy with floral and citrusy notes, a good wine to enjoy with seafood. Overall, nice environs, would make for a enjoyable place to try a bit of tasting next time around.

Lovely cellar door! High quality interior with a rich history from the surrounding area - it's lovely to know where all the materials are from. Great complimentary wine tasting (which these days are becoming rare), including wines from their premium range. I loved the fact that this place was open earlier than others (opens 10am) as we stopped in on the drive from Albany back to Perth.

A fantastic place to go and see. What you see from the road Is definitely not what you got. There is Soo much to see. Our tour guide Ken was fantastic and very knowledgeable. Reasonable price at $10 per adult. I highly recommend anyone to please go and see this place. They are open on weekends and again very well worth a visit.. whether you're local or not!!

There’s actually a lot more to see inside than you’d expect. There’s a guide who explains everything and she is really kind! It usually takes about an hour and a half. If you ask them to go faster, you can finish in an hour, or if you just want a quick look, they’ll just open the door and let you peek inside. You can learn a lot about the Mount Barker's history, and there are so many old things on display. I really recommend it.

West Cape Howe is absolutely stunning—raw coastline, steep cliffs, and a remote feel, yet it’s only about 40 minutes from Albany. Shelley Beach is a quiet, beautiful spot for a swim or picnic, with amazing views and even hang-gliders overhead. The nearby wind farm adds to the scenery, and Albany makes a great base to explore the area with its charm, history, and great coastal access.
R S — Google review
We came back after two years for the same season, between xmas and new years. It's great because you don't need booking and it's a wonderfull hidden corner. This time though, the camp host was nowhere to be seen, so campers went unleashed and placed tents (8pax) on dunes and big families rocking up blocking cars at the parking bay. It wasn't a very pleasant experience, but I guess you have to come down on a more quiet period. Still I think that the place lacks of proper camping policies/etiquette, even when there is no one to supervise especially in such a small camping ground. Please remember to be respectful with nature and rest of campers, carry your rubbish back with you and NEVER BLOCK CARS IN A CAR PARK, especially in areas of difficult access.

Absolutely stunning! The beach has white sand and crystal clear waters. Great facilities with plenty of car parks and toilets! As hikers, we loved the signage and path for the trail however don't go off the beaten track as its all sand and hard work to climb.

Majestic coastline and geological features. You can see, hear and feel the power of the sea at the Gap, the Natural Bridge and the Blow holes.

A stunning national park but be warned don't attempt any beach access that needs a 4wd without the confidence to extract yourself if you get stuck. Beach access tracks are very steep and rutted with soft sand. Well worth the effort though and you'll have your own private beach
Tim S — Google review
Shelley beach was my favourite, altho waves were a bit violent and lots of sand blasting while laying on the beach. Don't need a 4wd for Shelley beach but for many other bays you do. 4wd tracks are great here, but be prepared, slightly soft and boggy in places but no issue if you're prepared.
Jo C — Google review
Definitely only 4x4 vehicles only. Roads are a bit tricky here and there but absolutely worth it.

Wow, just such a stunning part of western Australia. The offroad tracks were relatively challenging for a stock Pajero with 80% road tyres fitted. Make sure you tie down any equipment before venturing off road..... it's bumpy!

Great winery in Denmark WA. Visited several wineries in the Margaret river and south Australia region in Oct 2025 and this one turned out to be our favorite. Beautiful tasting room, excellent service, our sommelier was extremely knowledgeable and their wine is amazing. You have to try their reserve Chardonnay. Rates No. 1 in Australia and it is quite good. At A$ 63/bottle, the quality rivals the A$150+ bottles.

Elephant Rocks, a natural formation located around 20 minutes from Denmark town, is a popular swimming spot and protected cove. It boasts impressive rock formations that resemble a herd of elephants and offers a stunning beach. The area is perfect for wandering and exploring the little nooks and crannies of the crevasse. The water is clear, making it an ideal location for snorkeling. Visitors are reminded to respect the ocean and keep the area clean by taking their rubbish with them upon leaving.
Absolutely stunning spot! The water is crystal clear with amazing shades of green and blue, and there’s a small hidden beach that’s great for a swim or just relaxing. Easy walk from the car park and not too crowded when we went. A must-visit if you’re in the Denmark or Albany area. Great for photos, picnics, and just soaking in the natural beauty.

We recently visited Elephant Rocks, a breathtaking destination that captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression. As you approach, the sight of enormous granite boulders, resembling a majestic herd of elephants reaching for the turquoise sea, is nothing short of mesmerizing. The contrast of the vibrant blue water against the rugged boulders creates a stunning backdrop that beckons you to explore further. The atmosphere here is serene, inviting you to simply sit and soak in the beauty around you. We found ourselves wishing for warmer weather, imagining how refreshing a swim would be in those crystal-clear waters. The gentle sound of waves lapping against the rocks adds to the tranquility, making it an ideal spot for reflection or a leisurely picnic. Whether you're hiking along the scenic trails, climbing the boulders for a better view, or just enjoying a moment of peace, Elephant Rocks offers an experience that feels both special and alive. This place is amazing! The rocks literally look like Elephants herded together in the water! It's only a short walk across the rocks to the green pools which was breathtaking! The only negative was the bloody Flies!!! Oh and the wind haha but amazing place, bucket list checked off!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely stunning place! 🐘 The massive granite rocks really do look like a group of elephants gathered by the water, such a unique sight. The turquoise water and smooth boulders make it perfect for photos, relaxing, or just soaking up the beauty of nature. The short walk from the car park is easy, and there’s a lookout point that gives you an amazing view from above. It can get a bit busy during peak times, but it’s worth every minute. A must-visit spot in Denmark, WA!

My favourite place to visit when in Denmark. So peaceful and I could look at the views all day!! It has it all....you can swing in the calm, sparkling, clear waters, snorkel, walk or hike along the rocks. I see something new each time I visit!!

Beautiful rock formation. Beautiful Green pool. Can walk to the beach. Free entrance, free and ample parking. Room for caravans and campervans. Short walks to lookout points. Only problem was the abundance of house flies, swarming all over your face..

Absolutely stunning spot! Can’t wait to come back during summer or on a sunny day. The scenery is breathtaking and perfect for photos or just relaxing by the water. A must-see in Denmark!

So do they look like elephants…..well yes they do. Easy walk down to the rocks and the beach area. Look out for lizards on your way so have your camera ready. If the tide is right you can get down to the sand and look around. Plenty of parking and toilets too.

Getting too many "Tourist Coaches", large Caravans and large "Camper Vans" visiting, the car park isn't suitable for these sort of vehicles? Also the amenities aren't suitable for a large amount of visitors, very small toilet block, with no shower facilities and a tank fed water supply.

We recently stayed at Ducketts Mill winery and it was absolutely beautiful! We all remarked everyday how much we loved it there. It feels really peaceful whilst being able to get a lovely coffee in the morning or the best part a phenomenal cheeseboard delivered to your caravan! We had multiple cheeseboards they were honestly that good. Pair it with a bottle of their wine and you are in heaven. Highly recommend their Chardonnay it was so yum. The owners and staff are so lovely and made us feel very welcome. They have lovely dogs who were so friendly and great with our golden retriever Frank as were the staff. Thank you so much for having us we will definitely be back 🫶🏼

Beautiful winery with amazing service from all staff! Celebrated my friends birthday here & camped overnight on the vineyard. They were so accommodating and helped made the birthday special. Not the mention the wine & platter boards were unreal!

My wife and I had a lovely time with our wine a cheese share platter. Perfectly paired. I’ve never been a wine drinker, but the 2023 SSB has become a new favourite. My children loved the sausage rolls and my daughter loved the home made tomato sauce. We were given a small container to take back home. Thank you x We will absolutely be back.

This was our second visit here and both times has been great. All the animals are gorgeous and well cared for and the grounds are clean and tidy. The young lady at the front desk was very welcoming and chatty which was lovely. I loved being able to hold the joey and pet the kangaroos, alpacas, goats, sheep and mini cows. My kids especially loved the Guinea pigs and rabbits despite them being a bit timid. We will definitely be back again next time!

Denmark Animal Farm & Pentland Alpaca Stud is hands down one of the best farm experiences I’ve ever had! From the moment we arrived, it was pure joy !! baby Highland cows (yes, you can actually go into the pen for cuddles!), wallabies, camels, fluffy chickens, and even guinea pigs you can sit with. Every corner of the farm has something exciting and interactive, and the animals are so well cared for and friendly. The highlight for me was being able to get up close with the baby cows and feed so many of the animals, it felt so special and memorable. The farm shop is also worth a visit, full of beautiful alpaca products that make the perfect keepsake or gift. If you’re in Denmark or passing through, this place is an absolute must-stop. Fun, interactive, and heartwarming !! I’d give it a 10/10 without hesitation!

My autistic daughter is very particular about her animal farm experiences as she hates to see them unhappy/badly handled/stressed by crowds. She LOVED this place so that’s saying something! We had a great time, especially loved the highland coos :)

Great place to visit. We had a ball Anna went just for the highland cows but ended up interacting with all the animals. Staff was so friendly too
Stuart F — Google review
Great spot, only a relatively small place, but the animals here are some of the most gentle animals I have ever hand fed and are all happy and healthy. Highly recommend trying to get here at around 3pm to assist with the bottle feeding of the baby animals. My wife absolutely enjoyed it.

You can actually go into pens and Pat or feed the animals. A beautiful up close experience like no where else.

Awesome little farm, the animals interacted with the kids taking the food from them, the animals put on a good show for us with the baby goats playing with the highland cows.

Such a lovely place for us as dinosaur, reptile, and bird lovers! Beautifully unique, and the owner is clearly passionate about his work. You get to hold and pet some of gorgeous birds and a lovely little snake, and there are two rescue kangaroos that you can feed. A really sweet stop on our way to Denmark.
Amelia — Google review
Family of 5 - 2 adults, 3 kids aged 12, 4 and 2. So much more than just dinosaurs! We had the best day today, hanging out with the most beautiful birds, kangaroos, snakes and of course the dinosaurs 🦜🦘🐍🦖 When we arrived, we had the place to ourselves and the man who build and owned this amazing place, Bill, gave us so much information about dinosaurs, the amazing birds and the reptiles. Not only were the robotic dinosaurs and replica dinosaur skeletons absolutely amazing, but we were able to hold and interact with birds every colour of the rainbow, feed and pat two gorgeous kangaroos and we got to have a private meet and greet with 3 of the tamest, friendliest mini python snakes - which is what our 4 year old loved the most! What a great day 🙌🏻
Nicolle A — Google review
We had a great time at dinosaur world. The kids loved the dinosaurs, reptiles and wild life. For entry we got to see all the animals, hold some reptiles and birds and feed some kangaroos. Even on a rainy day we were leant some umbrellas so we didn't miss out.

Nice place. Have done a lot of effort to manage it. Bill was kind n smiley. Ample parking. Dinosaur caricatures, snakes n lizards, kangaroos, n plenty of parrots. One can hold n pet the reptiles. Must see for kids. Small souvenir shop. Moderate fee/charges.
Dani B — Google review
The owner was super nice and let me hold a baby snake! Many of the birds are out of their cages and free to roam which is amazing for visitors and the birds themselves. Snakes were also really cool and surprisingly active and you can even feed a couple kangaroos! Very much worth a visit especially if you're already here to see the tree top walk, can't recommend it enough!

Saw the sign while driving from Denmark and decided to go and have a look - best decision! Such a unique and interesting place. Dinosaur figures + skeletones and interesting alive snakes. Favourites were a lot of different birds that are freely roaming around and say some phrases and are super friendly. Some fly/climb on you and want cuddles. Also two kangaroos that we got to feed and pet. The owner of this place is such a cool person who tells you different stories and showed us a young python that we got to hold! Overall a very welcoming and great place for both kids and adults. So glad we saw the sign and decided to visit!

2 adults. 1.5 hours. We had a lovely time here. Arrived at 10:00 before anyone else. There are lots of different types of parrots. Some of the parrots are free to roam around and are friendly. The owner was great, very informative, friendly and inviting, thank you for making it such a nice visit. He kept the parrots safe and showed us that they use their mouths/beaks to find out about the world. We also fed the kangaroos, these were very gentle with soft fur. The lizards and snakes were informative, nothing to be afraid of. The dinosaur animatronics were fun.
Geoff K — Google review
We first visited in 2018 and they have expanded their dinosaur display which the grand children loved. There were more aviaries outside with beautiful birds most of whom can't be released. There were snakes and bobtails that children/adults could hold plus an information session. Others snakes were able to be viewed in a safe environment.

Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk

Mentioned on
1 list
Sights & Landmarks
National park
Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk is a family-friendly nature attraction featuring guided walks, educational programs, and a discovery center. The 600m-long ramp provides access high into the canopy of giant tingle trees, reaching up to 40m above the ground. The gentle incline makes it easily walkable and accessible by assisted wheelchair.
After a busy day at work, I decided to finish up a bit early to take a drive for a walk among nature. I’d seen signage for the Valley of the Giants and thought it would be a lovely way to finish the day. The drive is pretty easy, a couple of sharp turns along the winding road but once you arrive there is plenty of parking. The entrance, and the Tree Top Walk itself, is flat so is suitable for prams and wheelchairs. The Tree Top Walk is about 600m long and is on a really gentle gradient. So whether you’re as fit as a fiddle or a bit of a slow walker, it’s suitable for all. After each short walk, there is a junction point of a couple of metres diameter where you can rest or go past anyone who is a bit slower than you are. I was there at the end of the day, in winter, so pretty much had the whole Tree Top Walk to myself 😊 You don’t need to worry about heights as the highest point is only 40 metres above ground and be aware there is a little bit of movement in the platforms as you walk, but you are completely safe. Just make sure you hold on to your phone or camera, wouldn’t want to drop it! The view from the walk is beautiful. Listening to the sounds of nature and looking up at the trees which are at least another 10 metres above you is so relaxing. Make sure you take some time to also appreciate how they constructed the wealk. Very minimal damage to the bush and it kinda blends in….well at least it’s not an eyesore. 😉 Once you’ve done the loop of the Tree Top Walk, there is a ground level Ancient Empire walk where you are walking among, and sometimes through, the trees. Nearly all of this 650m walk is accessible for all abilities and it’s really pretty. There are signs along the way and some great photo ops too. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

An attraction that shouldn’t be missed! Felt mesmerized walking along the Tree Top Walk. You can really feel how natural and preserved the place has been kept. The beautiful trees make are picture-worthy. Definitely worth the experience.

The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk is truly one of the iconic experiences in Western Australia and absolutely worth a visit if you’re in the Albany, Walpole, or Denmark region. We stopped here on our way back from Albany, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. The treetop walkway takes you high up into the canopy of the famous tingle trees, giving you a completely different perspective of the forest. The views are breathtaking, and it feels like walking among giants hence the name! The walkway is very safe and stable, so even if you’re a little nervous with heights, it’s still very manageable and well worth it. This is also a wonderful place for families. Our kids absolutely loved it, especially discovering the two fairy doors hidden along the way little touches that spark curiosity and imagination. On the ground level, the Ancient Empire walk is equally fascinating, taking you past enormous trunks and hollowed trees that have stood for centuries. If you time your visit well, I highly recommend staying for the sunset. Watching the forest glow with golden light from up in the treetops is a magical experience we’ll never forget. There’s also a visitor centre with a gift shop and friendly staff who are more than happy to share local knowledge about the trees and the region. Parking is easy, and the site is well-maintained, making the whole experience smooth and enjoyable. Overall, the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk is a must visit attraction in the South West whether you’re a couple, a family with kids, or a solo traveller. It’s both educational and awe inspiring, and it makes you appreciate just how special and unique Western Australia’s forests really are.
Piyum M — Google review
Saw this place on a TV show and thought us live to go there. Thankfully it lived up to the billing. Reasonable entrance fee tgat gives you access to two walks, one of which is through the tree canopy on a well contrcted framework of bridges and platforms. The other walk is through the forest with lots of information boards along the way. We were 4 adults and three children all under 10. All of us really enjoyed it. The gift shop at the entrance had plenty of reasonably priced merchandise too. Would visit again if I am lucky to be in the area
Phillip H — Google review
A dreamy place for a walk in the woods. We recommend the free guided tour. The path through the ancient empire is especially interesting for children, as there are dwarf doors to discover in some of the tree trunks. The treetop walkway is breathtaking. Those who are afraid of heights should be aware that the bridges sway a bit. In return, you'll enjoy fantastic views from 40 meters above the ground.
Peter T — Google review
We visited on a public holiday during school holidays and it did get busy by late morning there was no long waits for tickets. (You can pre purchase. Concession available.) I would recommend going at a quieter time to soak in the beautiful surrounds. Highly recommended. Especially so if you love birding. Great views of birds including many rosellas and Gilbert’s honeyeaters. Also enjoyed the free walk at the end: ‘Ancient Empire.’
Charlotte L — Google review
Lovely walk through an ancient forest. I preferred the walk at ground level vantage point, but the tree top walk was certainly beautiful too. We came first thing in the morning and it became busy very quickly! Go early to avoid crowds.
REBECCA D — Google review
We recently had the chance to experience the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk, and it was truly unforgettable. This place is a real standout for anyone who loves nature. As we climbed to a height of 40 meters, we felt completely surrounded by the ancient 400-year-old gum trees, their towering gnarled branches stretching majestically towards the sky and sometimes crossing our path so slightly. From the moment we stepped onto the walkway, the fresh scent of eucalyptus filled the air, reminding us of the vibrant ecosystem all around, and we could hear the soothing sounds of the forest—the rustling leaves and distant bird calls. The walkway gently sways beneath your feet, so if you’re not a fan of heights, it might give you vertigo, but it’s all part of the experience! Walking among the treetops, we were captivated by the stunning views. The lush canopy with its vibrant mix of native greens and the pops of color from the wildflowers peeking through on the forest floor. Each step offered a new perspective, and we couldn’t resist putting a short video together to capture the breathtaking scenes and serenity of this forest. After our adventure above the trees, we took a peaceful stroll through the Ancient Empire Walk below. This serene path winds through a grove of ancient tingle trees, creating an almost magical atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to pause, reflect, and appreciate the incredible history of these giants that have stood for centuries. The Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk is more than just an attraction; it’s a celebration of nature. The well-kept pathways and friendly staff made the experience even more enjoyable. Without a doubt, this was one of the highlights of our trip through the South West, and we can’t recommend it enough. If you get the chance, don’t miss the opportunity to walk among these giants—your spirit will thank you!

The Giant Tingle Tree is a must-see attraction located in the Walpole-Nornalup National Park, known for its unspoiled natural beauty. This 400-year-old red tingle tree is a magnificent sight to behold, with an 800m circular trail leading visitors from the car park to this ancient marvel. The park is celebrated for its rare tingle and karri trees, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts.
This tree is amazing. So huge. Could not imagine what it would have looked like before it was burnt and in earlier years. Great walk to see it too. The whole area is so beautiful. Highly recommend a visit to this amazing place. And please treat it with respect, don't throw your rubbish around.

A lovely walk through giant forest trees on an even pathway. Some parts sealed, some soft understorey and some gravel. Well worth the drive as this is spectacular too through beautiful Aussie bush.
Lois C — Google review
If you’ve never seen a tingle tree, this towering old Giant is the perfect introduction. Ancient and scarred from fires to the point of being hollowed out, it’s to be loved, respected, protected, and awed by like a great-grandmother, the matriarch and heartbeat of the forest. There is parking for several cars, and the smooth, easy path leads to the Giant in just a couple of minutes. It’s only 6.7 km east of Albany, accessible by the one-way west-to-east Hilltop Road. Don’t miss it!

Apart from visiting beaches all the time we were in south western Australia, we have also included some other equally exciting activities in out itinerary. We swapped our bathing gear with hiking gear and headed for the forest instead. This time, we were going to see the giant tingle tree. We arrived relatively earlier than other visitors and had the whole park to ourselves. The paths were clearly defined and the signs were informative and useful. We hiked around a few hours and although the sunny sky was blazingly hot, it did not bother us much as we were under the shade of the canopy. The tingle trees were magnificent. They are so big, huge and old. The trunks could tell a lot of stories if they could talk. We marvelled at the large hollowed out trunks and stepped into some of them to get some perspective from the inside. As expected, we were totally in awe of these gigantic trees.

Very lovely welcome and exceptional good old customer service. They do have some local crafts, food and art apart from some souvenirs to sell. Some old photos and stories of the part is displayed around the walls and heaps of info about what is happening around. We did miss out on one of the tours for yesterday and they called to let us know about an extra evening one, even though it was not happening. A great park and area for hiking. A short walk takes you to the lookout that offers amazing views. Another walk takes you to the top of the big rock! There are lots of stairs but appropriate for most fitness levels - can always take a break and soak in the great view! There is also another path that take you back to towards the entrance with another great lookout view and walk through the forest! There are picnic tables and long-drop toilet facilities, and accessible my gravel road.

It’s a great place and don’t be confused with the 300 meters one. The higher one is on the right from the car park or from the information board. It’s a short hike but great view. I could not stay for long as I had infant baby and it was very windy so I could not take the prover video and photo. Evening is not recommended as it gets wild windy. I would recommend morning and you all have the best 360 views. Plus google gave very wrong travel timing which made it worse having the infant kid. Definitely recommend it
Bhuwan T — Google review
There is a lot to do in this place, so make sure you do some planning and spend some time getting around. Road access is very good. Have some really good walking shoes and plenty of water for the numerous hiking trails and lookout walks. The climb up to the main lookout is worth it.
Rod T — Google review
Visited the place in late autumn. There is a lookout around 300m from the car park which provides a great view of the surrounding area and is easily accesible. If you are able, hike to the summit - it is a steep 600m hike and you would have to climb up stairs but the view is well worth the effort!! On the way back, go via the Cadyanup trail, a 1.5km trek around the base of Mt Franklin. A bit rough and rocky in certain places but it takes you through beautiful karri forest. Certainly one of our favorite hiking places in the south west.

This place is so nice. 4wd will be appropriate for the road. The trees are tall and you can see kangaroo along the road. The wilderness lookout as well as the summit and stairway to heaven are worth visiting. Great hike.
