Wonderful pottery and a delightful host who gave us a real insight into how he creates his pottery. Absolutely recommend stopping by here.

I feel terrible for forgetting his name. But we arrived and were greeted. He showed us how he makes his pottery and all the steps to make it all. It was such a lovely experience and absolutely loved it. Would highly recommend. We spent about 40 minutes here. The pottery here is perfect.

Fantastic experience at Logan Wine's cellar door! Emma was absolutely wonderful, and the wine was exceptional. We particularly enjoyed the 2024 Logan Chardonnay and Logan Shiraz. It is definitely worth trying and stocking up on some of those bottles. The setting was stunning, with a beautiful overhanging room featuring glass walls that show views of the vineyards. Thank you so much Emma for your passion, knowledge and recommendations for places to visit in the area!

Just loved our tasting experience at Logan’s, Tegan our host was exceptional, so welcoming and so knowledgeable about the wines …. I am sure we stayed much longer than usual but we had so much fun. Highly recommend the amazing cheese platter. Look forward to visiting again
Debbie A — Google review
No food but they have a cheese platter and salami board. The cheese platter was fantastic and generous! The view is simply gorgeous as well. We had the wine tasting and the staff gave a good explanation
Tang L — Google review
Fabulous wine tasting. Some different grape varieties i hadn't had in a long time and really enjoyed them. Staff friendly and knowledgeable and they tailored my wine tasting to me and wines I was interested in trying. Bought several wines. The cheese board was delicious. Was noisy with a large group in there but once they left it was very pleasant. Stunning views highly recommend. If you love your wines and Interested in the opportunity to taste some different varieties this is for you. They still have the good old staples and they are done beautifully. So glad we popped in.
Tracey K — Google review
A good spot to start your wine tasting weekend as you arrive in Mudgee. Logan has beautiful views, friendly and fun staff, and yummy wine. Their Riesling is amazing.
MOMO — Google review
A beautiful cellar door with stunning views across the vineyard. The wine selection is excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed our tasting experience with a very knowledgeable host. Be sure to order the cheese plate—it pairs perfectly with the tasting and is ideal to enjoy with a glass of wine afterwards.
Preeti K — Google review
First time visiting wineries, the lady was so lovely and accommodating, explained a lot for us newbies. Beautiful view. Enjoyed the experience 😊
Karen W — Google review
A pleasant place to come with your guests. The view on the vineyard is breathtaking and the interior looks crisp and modern. Overall it is a clean nice winery. The wines are quite decent, the cheese platter is generous, the staff is cheerful and caring - good ingredients for a nice time.

Robert Stein Winery, Vineyard & Farm. Mudgee Winery

Mentioned on

Winery
Food & Drink
Robert Stein Winery & Vineyard is a picturesque winery in Mudgee that boasts of a tasting shop, picnic area and vintage motorbike museum. The winery has won several awards for its exquisite wines such as Reisling. Despite some wineries being closed during Christmas holidays, Robert Stein Winery & Vineyard remained open for wine tasting. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their wines which makes the experience all the more enjoyable. Visitors can purchase good quality wines after the tasting session.
I discovered the most amazing Merlot when I was in Mudgee then sought out this winery where it was from so I could stock up! Did a wine taste while we were there. While I'm not a huge wine drinker and was nervous it would be a pretentious experience, the young man serving us was so down to earth and helpful that it was just the best experience. I ended up buying more than just the Merlot!!! Also, my husband rides motorbikes so the motorcycle museum was a bonus! Finally, beautiful views.
Jess S — Google review
Gets very busy on weekends. Recommend to get there early for wine tastings as tasting takes approx 1-1.5 hours . Very nice charcuterie board.
C A — Google review
My wife and I had a truly wonderful experience at Robert Stein Winery, Vineyard & Farm. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality. The wine tasting was outstanding — each wine was beautifully presented, and the quality was exceptional. We stayed for lunch and were equally impressed with the food and service. A special highlight for us was being joined by Dave, the friendly vineyard dog, who made the experience even more memorable. We left with a few of our favourite bottles and a smile on our faces. A must-visit if you’re in Mudgee!
Daniel S — Google review
A wonderful tasting, friendly winery hosts on our short visit to Mudgee and Orange from Sydney. We were astonished how fabulous the 'half dry' Robert Stein Riesling was. We wouldn't dream of buying Riesling at home in UK because we find it too floral, sweet and 'old school' Blue Nun but this wine was a revelation and we bought a number of bottles to enjoy and share with friends and family. Very classy.
Ian F — Google review
Second time visiting. And it’s always an absolute pleasure. Tasty wines and cheese board is awesome. Dog friendly. Can get busy, because this winery is superb.
Vi L — Google review
A Memorable Experience at Robert Stein Winery My visit to Robert Stein Winery was absolutely wonderful. The property is beautiful and peaceful, surrounded by scenic vineyards and rolling hills — a perfect spot to relax and take in the Mudgee charm. The staff were welcoming, knowledgeable, and passionate about their wines, making the tasting experience enjoyable and informative. The wines themselves were exceptional — well-balanced and full of character, especially the reds. We also enjoyed the history and heritage behind the winery, which added to the overall experience. Whether you’re a wine lover or just looking for a relaxing afternoon in a picturesque setting, I highly recommend stopping by Robert Stein Winery. It’s one of those places that leaves a lasting impression.
Sinharib S — Google review
Very nice winery, beautiful view and amazing history with the bikes. Staff were not very attentive as they were busy with the wine tasting guests.
Mena D — Google review
Great tasting experience at the cellar door! Geoff ran us through a great selection of wines and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning. Very relaxed environment and would highly recommend the pipeclay pumphouse for dinner - the prawns were sensational!

Amazing venue!! Tony and Susie are great hosts, the wine was so lovely and the food to match was so unique!!! Best winery in Mudgee! Thank you so much for a great afternoon! Ps we love Diego the dog
Aimee J — Google review
Such an amazing winery with an incredibly talented wine-maker. Well worth a visit. Tony is crafting amazing, bespoke wines using cutting edge wine making techniques resulting in beautifully complex wines that are delicious and special. Very small batch and really just in general an experience not to be missed, especially if you are interested and knowledgable about wine. Thank you Tony for waiting for us at closing time, and showing us your beautiful creations! We can't wait for our box to arrive.
Rachel H — Google review
Phenomenal wines at Short Sheep Micro Winery. Tony’s passion and knowledge shines through with the quality of wines. One of the best tasting experiences in Mudgee. If you can only get to a few cellar doors while in Mudgee, make sure you visit Short Sheep. Don’t be put off by the ‘Micro’ in name - it means care and quality in the wine making.
Narelle H — Google review
Wow I have no words to describe this place. Tony owns and runs this place and he is just so lovely. We did a tasting with complimentary food pairing and it was beyond our imagination. I've tried wines from all over Australia (literally) and this place was spectacular. Thank you Tony for introducing an avid red wine drinker to Chardonnay. I can't wait for my next wine delivery!!
M S — Google review
Ah, this may be a micro winery but it is macro on everything else - from Tony's wonderfully engaging ability as a storyteller to his passion for his craft and discipline to let nature do its thing and of course, the wines - complex and delicious! We learnt so much about the various processes during our tasting but weren't overwhelmed with detail - the wines themselves shone. The reds in particular and those that had undergone wild fermentation were a delight for the palette. This place is absolutely worth a stop - do it!
Chanelle W — Google review
A great little boutique winery, run by welcoming hosts offering a nice casual setting for wine tasting. They don't charge for the tastings, but you'll be sure to walk away with a few bottles. Really enjoyed their vermentino and rosés. It's small, quaint and cosy. Worth a stop to support an honest hard working small batch winery.
Carlito — Google review
What an amazing experience! Tony has perfectly paired his wines to create a unique tasting experience. His guided tasting truly takes you on a journey. A must do if you visit Mudgee.

Had the best port and fortified tasting here! Holly was very knowledgeable about the ports on hand! Their white port is amazing! Also they have a rare burnt flavoured port from 2020. Don't mock it until you try it. Very unique taste and you'll be surprised at how good it is! This is a must stop if your in the Mudgee area!
Cuz A — Google review
This is such an excellent winery. The bottles on offer for their tasting are all delicious, it makes it hard to decide which ones to buy. The most memorable was the pipeclay white, which was unique in taste and their signature bottle. They also had a great Chardonnay on offer. The staff are very welcoming, pleasant and fun to have a joke with. The place is set in a restored warehouse with old giant barrels lining the place. You feel like you walked into a museum. The pictures don't do it justice. This place is unlike any other winery in Mudgee. You just have to swing by.
Carlito — Google review
I’ve loved Pieter van Gent’s port for years, so I had to stop by while coming down from Dubbo, and it was absolutely worth it! The winery has a charming, rustic atmosphere and the staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. Their range of wines is excellent, but the port remains my favourite, rich, smooth, and full of character. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates quality wine and a relaxed cellar door experience.
Sed O — Google review
The most amazing vineyard we’ve ever been to. Had the best tasting anywhere we’ve ever been- Italy, France, South Africa, etc. Sarah went above and beyond, made us feel completely at home and was so knowledgeable. Best experience, we’ll be back for our next Mudgee trip!
Bonnie J — Google review
Loved the tasting experience here. The cellar door particularly is so unique and charming.
Jay A — Google review
Great tasting and service from Sarah & Paul! Friendly, fun and the wine was amazing! Thank you so much!
Mitchell W — Google review
The staff are lovely and very engaging. The man that was helping with our tasting was so interesting that our son put his iPad down. He deserves five stars! Sadly, the winery we used to love has changed. The wine just isn’t the same anymore. It’s a beautiful place to visit. Hopefully, this will change because it would be a shame.
Stacy H — Google review
The best place for wine tasting in Mudgee! The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere itself was unique that felt like you’re on another planet! The wine was impeccable! They also have really nice accommodation houses and studios that really lets you “wine” down over starry nights and wood fire pits

The Cellar by Gilbert (Gilbert Family Wines)

Located in Mudgee, New South Wales, The Cellar by Gilbert (Gilbert Family Wines) offers a delightful blend of scenic countryside, exquisite wine and dining escapades, luxurious accommodations, and a rich colonial heritage. Established in 2004 by the Gilbert family with Simon and Will Gilbert at the forefront, this winery prides itself on crafting top-notch cool climate wines sourced from Mudgee, Orange, and Eden Valley.
We hosted our Thursday afternoon welcome drinks at Gilbert Cellar, and it was the perfect way to kick off our wedding weekend. The outdoor space was beautiful, laid-back, sunny, and such a comfortable spot for our families to relax and connect. From the start, Maddy was absolutely amazing to work with. She was so helpful, organized, and just genuinely lovely. The wine was incredible, our guests couldn’t stop talking about it, and the cheese boards were delicious and beautifully put together. It was exactly the kind of relaxed, joyful gathering we were hoping for. Huge thank you to Maddy and the Gilbert Cellar crew for making it all feel so special. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the celebrations!
Julia H — Google review
(3.5 stars) You can combine your love of exploring both food and wine at The Cellar By Gilbert. Not only is it the cellar door of a sixth generation wine family, the site is also home to a local cheesemaker. The cellar door offers three structured wine flights. We went for the most expensive one—the Gilbert feature flight ($20/person)—but asked for a couple of substitutions to knock out Shiraz and put in one of the entry level wines because we wanted to taste the 2022 Gilbert Pinot Gris ($30). Made on grapes from the Hilltops region rather than locally grown, it was actually the wine I liked the most, scrubbing up as a pretty, bright daytime drinker. The only other wine I wanted to buy was the 2017 Gilbert + Gilbert Single Vineyard Riesling ($60). This museum release was again made using grapes from another region (South Australia’s Eden Valley) but despite loving the wine’s elegance and complexity, at sixty bucks a bottle, I couldn’t justify the price. The cellar door does offer a competitively priced, succinct menu of grazing boards and small plates, like marinated lamb cutlets ($23), to extend your wine tasting into a whole of lunch affair.
Jackie M — Google review
Should put this place in your wine tasting lists. Me and my bf had a great time. We met " Gift ", she's acknowledging us through the wine tasting flight. It's nice to have an experience with someone's who really enjoys and passionate about what they doing (working) for. And near by, after a wine tasting you can walk down for a cheese tasting as well. Its a lovely feta cheese here !!!Such a lovely place 💕
Jariyaporn N — Google review
Im not a Rosè drinker or white wine in fact, but this Rosè was insanely good. We found that this place was one of the only wineries open the latest on a Sunday. A top choice regardless of the day, the vibe was magical chill. Recommend. Purchased a few bottles on the way out aswel. Worth it.
Emily M — Google review
Where was the customer service i would like to know. The lady that served us when we arrived and said we just wanted a quick tasting session had clearly not been trained in customer service or didn't think we were going to buy anything and were just wanting a taste. We ended up buying $370 of wine so should have been treated better from the start. The lady that took over at the end was way nicer and helped improve the experience but first impressions have a big impact on what people think. Would suggest many other wineries in the area not because of the wines but because of the service. Treat every customer like they are going to buy wine after tasting and they mean something to you.
Lucia R — Google review
Spent a beautiful afternoon in the gardens at Gilberts, sharing a cheese plate with special friends and enjoying a bottle of rosé, highly recommended. Gift, our waitress, was fantastic, extremely attentive highly recommended
Sancha K — Google review
Nice ambience We were a group of 8 and requested wine tasting where we were asked to pay $20 for 6 serves of wine. We were prepared to buy wine. Couldn’t believe the frugal amount of wine in a small wine glass. When we asked if that was the norm , the staff replied we give 25 ml a tasting. Honestly, we are all mature wine drinkers and we know the 6 tastings did not equal a glass of wine. Very disappointing. We would have gone back for a meal but were put off by the frugal amount Never been to a winery where we’ve been served this portion. Potential sales were lost as we are big , mature wine drinkers and we know our wine Toni
Antonella P — Google review
One of the must-visit places for food and drinks in Mudgee. The 2017 Shiraz and Spiced Cauliflower come highly recommended. Their customer service is exceptional, and Maddy is the sweetest and best!

Yes, this is a lovely cellar door to visit with kids in particular, grounds are lovely, plenty of places to sit and have a picnic and glass of wine. The little cafe sells a range of grazing boxes including small versions for kids, though we just had a slice of cheesecake which was delicious. Husband and I did the tasting session and wines pretty lovely, good selection to try. Oh and they are dog friendly too!
K C — Google review
We had such a lovely time at Lowe Family Wines! The picnic hamper was really good and paired perfectly with the wines. Fretta was so nice and welcoming, which made the experience even better. The winery itself is absolutely beautiful with breathtaking views, and of course the wine was fantastic. Such a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the day—highly recommend!
Piumi A — Google review
We booked a last-minute wine tasting and Deluxe Hamper online, which was super easy. Amelia hosted our tasting and we also spoke with Brian, both were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, we learned so much. The wine and food were fantastic, and the view over the vineyard was just stunning. Such a wonderful experience, we highly recommend Lowe Family Winery to anyone visiting Mudgee!
Kathleen H — Google review
We always visit Lowe Family Wines on our getaways to Mudgee and it is fabulous every single time. Our latest visit included a ‘let the chef and winemaker choose’ lunch. So much fun. Such great food and with the winemaker, David Lowe pouring for the long table of around 40, great wine was flowing. Such a great experience in a really beautiful, family owned winery. You can’t help but feel absolute joy! These guys put their heart and soul into what they do and their hospitality is next level. You feel like one of the the family. Love it. A Mudgee must!
Hellie — Google review
A truly amazing place with beauty and character and decades of experience behind the process. David Lowe has incredible vision and is using a sustainable energy approach to his whole production cycle. Visiting was a revelation and a truly immersive experience.
Jeremy S — Google review
Had a wonderful tasting at Lowe Family Wine Co today. The setting is beautiful, and our fabulous host, Elle, made the visit memorable with her warm, fun, engaging approach and great knowledge of the wines. It was relaxed, informative, and a lovely start to our day in Mudgee. Definitely worth stopping in if you’re exploring the region.
Michael L — Google review
Our favourite winery in Mudgee by far. Lovely views, amazing wines but what brought the experience to another level was the expertise that Brian brought to our wine tasting. Walked out learning so much. Brian did an amazing job describing the wines in scientific but fun way. Came during the week. Would recommend booking ahead as this is not one to miss!

A great place to just relax and enjoy a lovely antipasto platter and a nice glass of wine. I went out and did the Lowe Flow wine tasting with a lovely group of people from Dubbo and had a blast. The sommelier was amazing and very informative on what we were trying.. will definitely be back!

Mudgee Honey Haven is a must-visit spot in Mudgee, easily accessible from Sydney via the Blue Mountains. The farm gate trail offers an array of local and fresh produce, including cherries, figs, hazelnuts, olives, beef, pomegranates, garlic, desert limes, stone fruits, lamb and honey. At Mudgee Honey Haven itself you can taste different varieties of honey and try skin care products made with honey.
Great shop that sells everything with honey. We tried choc, strawberry, vanilla ice cream, and the best is their honey ice cream! They mead wine is good as well.
Vanna B — Google review
Charming little place to get anything to do with honey. Learned about Mead and was surprised to really enjoy the honey beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The staff are very knowledgable and helpful. They are very good at upselling! We spent over $200! Definitely worth a visit.

Great range of products. Very good customer service. Yummy ice cream.
C A — Google review
Great place to try and learn more about honey. The woman that helped us was so friendly, happy to chat with my son about his questions on bees. The self serve tasting was so good, we had no idea there were so many favoured honey options. The whole shop was full of all sorts of great products. Very neat and clean. We left with lots of honey and even tried their ice cream which was excellent. This is worth the visit.
M C — Google review
They used to have a demonstration of bee hive and honey extraction process which is closed for a while. Besides that’s is just a retail shop now and with higher price tag. You can their honey and have a coffee if you are driving by
Nasir K — Google review
Not far from town. What a lovely place. There’s a variety of honey to taste before buying. Lots of varieties to choose from and there’s choc honey comb chocolate for sale as well. Small cafe in the front which sells honey flavoured ice creams. Car park available on site. Highly recommended.
Raj A — Google review
Great shop with so many products related to honey and bees wax. There’s a central honey tasting area, a sample of lotions and scrubs, and a cafe that sells honey flavoured ice creams which were delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful, always asking if you need any help. They’re quite funny too even when having problems with the credit card machines. Made for a nice little shopping trip.

A lovely place with super friendly and knowledgeable staff… you will find alcohols and spirits produced with honey… so unique and memorable experience… you can taste different varieties of honey and test different skin care products made with honey too along with honey mead tastings. we loved the spiced honey mead and bee care exfoliator… you will also get non- alcoholic honey based sparkling drinks… kids loved it… and something different to regular wine tasting experience…

We had wanted to come to Mudgee Observatory but was quite sadden that all the tours had been booked out weeks ahead. (Make sure you book in early if you're planning a trip here). Thankfully, John was super nice and showed us around during the day. We even got to see some solar flares with the telescopes! Definitely a highlight of our trip. Do make sure you book ahead so you won't miss out!

John's observatory was an awesome experience. He's very Knowledgeable picking out great views to look at through his telescopes. I really enjoyed the educational evening getting to appreciate the night sky outside of the city by spending a bit of time in a group of like minded people. Thanks John!!

Thanks John, wonderful educator and a local gem of a spot. Once you get the hang of where certain constellations are, you can spot them easier ! Good 1.5hrs of educating yourself about the basics of the universe.

A cosy, intimate and relaxed set up. John was brilliant at explaining all the stars and how things worked. He was happy to answer any questions we had. The backyard set up was so different to any experience I've had, we absolutely loved it. Well worth a trip, would do it again

My partner and I were recently in Mudgee for an engagement party. I plotted our little side quest and we decided to go to Burnbrae Wines as it was just down the road from Honey Haven. Our experience at Burnbrae wines was the best! The service was amazing, the wines that we tasted were outstanding and the pizza was so tasty! We had only planned to stay for an hour, but got chatting to the new owners and stayed for 2 1/2 hours whilst enjoying the amazing Savy B. Visually the winery is stunning & rustic with a true county feel. I just loved the Savy B & the Rose. We highly recommended you make some time when in Mudgee to visit this beautiful winery. 10/10

Super welcoming and knowledgeable hosts, excellent wines to try, and a delicious antipasto plate loaded with local goodies. All enjoyed on a quiet verandah shaded by a giant grape vine. If you're travelling through Mudgee a lot of cellar doors are closed during the week. Burnbrae is open and it was not crowded on our mid week lunch time visit. We purchased their sparkling white and a Shiraz. If you want to experience a Mudgee wine tasting then I definitely recommend you try this place. It's not far from the Honey place just down the road.

Wife and I visited this place over the long weekend. Attended to by the owner. Lovely lady who was an absolute crack up. Great attentiveness and service. Also the pizza was to die for. A bit of a pizza snob here and this was in my top 3. Cracker crust and a wood fire pizza that’s not sloppy and watery

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay + visit to the cellar door @ Burnbrae Vineyard. We would highly recommend a visit, the staff are so welcoming + friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed + the pizzas are delicious + the wine variety was good 👍

Our wine tasting host Tayla was so delightful, warm and welcoming and very knowledgable. We had a wonderful time and I don’t even drink wine. It’s a very cool place and my husband vouched for the quality of the wine. The proof is in his purchases. Highly recommend a trip to this slice of paradise.

Being a wedding photographer and working at Burnbrae often, I knew I needed to get married here! We chose Burnbrae, Not just because of their incredible wine and beer but because of the versatility. We really envisioned a wedding that was fully outside under the fairy lights and they didn’t disappoint! The fact that it also has an amazing wet weather option really made our decision final. Dotty and the Burnbrae team were amazing to work with and made our wedding so much fun. Nothing was ever an issue for Dotty and she was so helpful in every aspect of our day. She literally made our wedding dreams come to life. All of our guests are still talking about how good the day was. We are so glad to have booked Burnbrae and it will always have a special place in our hearts. Thank you so much to Dotty and the Burnbrae team. – Steph & Tom

Great winery on Mudgees wine trail, a few kms out of town. The wine tasting is amazing, and their pizzas were terrific. We had 2 pizzas. You won't leave without a sneaky bottle or 2 of Moscato. Yummo

A must to Visit when in Gulgong. The whole area and place is super clean and tidy, plenty of shaded areas lots of seating available, toilets and even a free BBQ to use. There’s also a very nice tea and coffee shop there with a variety of different things to eat. Lots of great history about Gulgong on display and a mine tour you can do. There’s also Gold panning to do with the kids which is fantastic and will definitely find something in the pan. There’s plenty of parking areas and easy parking with a caravan. Very short walk then if you want to head into the town ship of Gulgong to check it out.

We did a day trip to mudgee and went to Gulgong as my husband grew up there as a child. We loved the experience but want to go back and do the tour which wasn't open when we were there. Great place for the kids to learn about Australian History.

Lovely Experience. Friendly staff. Kids can spend some time with Gold panning, rest nothing much to do. Opening hours are 1-3pm only.

We drive all the way from Sydney and have an email confirmation to visit on a Sunday and on turning up are told it’s closed. Pathetic!!! Just so unprofessional and for our 8 year old son a really frustrating experience. What a joke.

We braved the non-stop rain to head out to Gulgong to visit the Gold Mine in the Central West of NSW/Mudgee Region. And I must admit it was worth the drive and effort. First off I'd like to thank Dave who welcomed us there and told us all about the history of the Gulgong town and the gold mine. The Gulgong Gold Experience is quite a popular tourist attraction especially if you have kids and they want to get a feel of what's it like to look for gold. You can buy a bag for $5 including a pan to experience searching for gold. It's a fun learning activity for kids and adults too (if you're up for it). There is a video that you can watch at the museum and learn about how gold was first discovered here and how the town got established around 1870. Even Henry Lawson and his family lived in Gulgong during the #goldrush. The place is run by volunteers who are very knowledgeable and polite. There is an entry fee of $5 per adult, $3 for children and $15 for families. They open from 1300hrs until 1500hrs Wednesdays through to Sundays. Headout to their website to find out more.

The guide there was brilliant and explained the heritage and history in detail, he knows his stuff and even volunteered to take photos for us! An interesting piece of relic in Gulgong. A must visit if you are traveling to Gulgong.

What an amazing collection of history!! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND A VISIT TO THIS HUGE MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIANA! For a $15 adult entry price, we wandered the acres of museum for hours viewing so many well kept items from years ago. The volunteers there are happy to chat and are proud as punch of the fabulous array of history that they are Custodians of. There is lots to view from the local area and beyond. Wow. We were shocked at the size of the collection and the fabulous condition of everything. Do yourself a favour and drop into Gulgong to see this place and the beautiful town it sits in Spend some money and have some lunch, the town folk here are delightful!

How many of us know that AUD 10 note featured a portrait of Henry Lawson, an Australian poet and writer, along with images of buildings and bush scenes from Gulgong ! The museum takes you back to a bygone era … the doll collection, vintage candy shop , amazingly preserved cottage. It’s seems a piece of time has been frozen and well preserved. Items and well preserved and documented. Please visit the town and take a tour of the museum.
Kanish M — Google review
What a great spot to stop and see some of the local and Australian history. So much to see. Old vehicles, clothing, cameras, projectors, coins guns and heaps more. So glad we stopped. 15 dollar adult entry. Worth every dollar. Easy wheelchair access. Maybe a bit tight I side and some steps inside but would see most of it.
Jeff U — Google review
The most impressive Australian historical museum I have ever been to in NSW. It covered absolutely everything you could imagine. You need at least 3 hours to see everything properly. There is a lot of love and pride in this museum and the $15 entry fee is way too low. Highly recommended!

i love this place. i’m from penrith but a very big history nerd. i’ve visited three times and im still in awe every single time. such an amazing museum for so cheap. my favorite is definitely the doll room :)
Callie K — Google review
This is a wonderful place to visit, you can easily lose yourself in times gone by and revel in the nostalgia. There are thousands of items in a kind of labyrinth-like display that meanders along creaky old floors to showcase beautifully set up rooms that graphically illustrate the way of life of early Australia. Highly recommend a visit but set aside at least two hours to thoroughly immerse yourself in the history that this place offers. Good value entry fee and staffed by friendly and knowledgeable volunteers. This was our second visit and still we are in awe of the place.
Al P — Google review
Have never seen so many different things to see in one place! The collection is huge! It’s so well set up and laid out. There are tractors and all types of farm equipment, horse drawn vehicles, old house hold items like record players and radios, fossils, sporting artefacts, toys, even buildings from the 1800s set up as they would have liked. I would never have thought so many items could fit into one museum! And it’s affordable to visit. You can get a ticket and leave and have lunch and return. How good is that! Well done to all the wonderful volunteers who look after this wonderful museum.

This place is a beautiful and peaceful. Fern Gully is close to my heart. All the different species of plants is unbelievable. Kangaroos, Emus and Echidnas The Garden is for everyone. Leave it as you found it. I highly recommend a visit to the Burrendong Arboretum You won't be disappointed and you certainly won't find a place like this anywhere else.

A little hidden gem. Surprised that it wasn't well mapped out on Google maps. The entrance to the gardens is before the point set out on Google maps. Once you go in, it's mostly a self guided tour. Great place to go in and enjoy the serenity. Any SUV would be ideal to drive around the gardens. We drove around in our Camry, and it was a little tricky. The fern gardens were great! Would recommend
Lillian J — Google review
Great garden. We were the only ones there and while we only went to the Fern Gully route (due to time constraints), it's a great relaxing place and we would definitely come another time when we visit the area again and can spend more time here. Also saw a group of kangaroos speed past us while we were in the Fern Gully section.

This garden has an amazing collection of native species. Many are rare and many are very beautiful. The garden seems to be making a strong recovery after the drought two years ago. This season has seen lots of new growth. If you love plants this is worth a trip.

We drove all the way out to this public dam but there’s no where to get to the water unless you pay the caravan park $15! There’s a government sports facility that’s only open to the government. What a huge disappointment, waste of petrol and time.

The place is a must visit stop off, next time we will stay overnight. Carol is an absolute gem, we were made to feel so welcome, had an absolute blast playing pool and on the jukebox. A huge Sunday roast meal we were told about on Saturday . Didn’t disappoint . Three meats and roast veges- came with local pastries for dessert. Very nice , very friendly . It’s a long way to come for a great meal but unplanned things are often the best.

Planned to stay 1 night but just had to stay 2 nights. Would have stayed longer. Carol was so welcoming and friendly, the locals were just as awesome. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. The beer was icy cold and the food was tops and cheap. We parked up.behind the pub which was enclosed by gates, beautifully maintained gardens, hot shower and toilet block separate from the pub. Just pull in go inside and speak to Carol and she'll come open the gates for you. We will definitely be back. Thank you Carol and all the Mumbil locals for your hospitality and warm welcome xx

We absolutely loved Wellington Caves! We have kids aged 8, 10 and 14, and it was one of their highlights of the whole road trip. The tour and caves were amazing, and the campground was peaceful and such a lovely place to stay the night. Couldn’t recommend it more!

A great experience. Staff are fantastic and so enthusiastic and evidently passionate about what they do. Heating up food seemed to keep the staff overly busy and they could consider a way to get this done quicker or have pre heated food and maybe pre made sandwiches? (Just trying to help...) Would come again to see the other cave, we saw cathedral and it didn't disappoint.
Doug L — Google review
Loved this place. We spent the whole day here and did two cave tours and the discovery show. Loved the caves however they are both quite small. They are both very different, yet equally spectacular. We are lunch here and looked at the fossil in the mini museum, great day.

We had a great time and spent 1 hour there despite missing our tour due to road closures. The interactive room is so good. The Japanese gardens are also worth a look and are across the road

Park was lovely green grass. Our site was on a steep hill so either way we put the caravan either the drawbar was on the ground or the jockey wheel was chocked up very very high. Playground is out of action and the pool was closed for the whole time we were there. Being the long weekend it was not ideal when you have little kids with you. Cave tour was ok.
Julie M — Google review
We loved the Wellington Caves experience with Westie. He is a fun and lively local, and a great tour guide. We've traveled past the turnoff heaps of times and never before gone in. It's really worth it and something that should be in everyone's bucket list. Thanks also to the lovely young staffer who got us in to the tour as ring-ins. Paul and Michelle.

I’m just appalled at staff who think it’s ok to talk to guests like a school child. Don’t turn up 7 minutes early for checking or you’ll be scalded. Don’t ask if the pool ca be opened a couple of days before October (even though it’s school holidays) or you’ll be asked questions like ”would McDonald’s let you in at 4am?” Well mane not mate, but at least they have customer service. Park is lovely itself. Bathrooms are clean but could do with some plumbing work. Cave tour, not cheap and honestly, meh.

A new and interesting playground under majestic mature trees. My 3 year old and 7 year old had a fun time playing on the equipment. It varies from having the soft and clean flooring to bark. The trees around this playground are phenomenal. I looked one up and apparently its a Himalayan Cedar right behind the wedge tailed eagle statue. The gardens around the park were well maintained featuring gorgeous roses. If the town now had a full paint job to match this incredible park it would be truly spectacular.

The children's play are was quite modern and relatively well kept. There were a few pieces of equipment that were broken, so caution is advised with young kids. Lots to explore for all ages, and there's picnic benches and shaded areas nearby, alongside toilet facilities. There's a small grassland area nearby too.

A great example of a good country pub. I had the T-Bone Special for $30 and it was the best T-Bone I've had at a pub. My daughter's schnitzel was pretty good too. Service was exemplary by the staff. If we ever come back to Wellington we'll definitely visit again. Also as a Rugby head, it was great to see that the hotel sponsors the local Rugby Club as the game needs all the support it can get at all levels.

90 dollars for a single room right alongside a main road thru town.besides the roar of trucks using compression brakes you are treated to a constant stream of diesel exhaust fumes coming through an open grate vent on the wall wafting down onto your head where the bed is.if that's not enough for you try the showers where the water doesn't drain away, forcing you to try to dress without getting your trouser legs wet.f this I'm off to get a good night's sleep in my car.

The best thing about this museum is Alf and Sharon the volunteers. They are friendly and entertaining. They are very knowledgeable. Sharon makes the scones fresh every morning and they are awesome. They have real expresso coffee. Lots of the locals just come in for the cafe. This museum fits a lot into a small space. I am not a museum person, so didn't look at too much. They offered us head sets for an audio recording. If you wanted to look at everything you would be here for hours.

Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden is a picturesque and family-friendly destination with free admission. It consists of four distinct garden areas: Shoyoen Japanese Garden, Sensory Gardens, Oasis Valley, and Biodiversity Garden. The serene Shoyoen Japanese Garden is particularly popular for its traditional landscape and features like a small lake with Koi fish, a waterfall, and birdlife. Adjacent to the garden is the Dubbo Regional Adventure Playground, making it an ideal spot for families.
This is a lovely area. It is not too big that you can easily walk around with young kids. There is a pond with huge carps and a resident pelican. Lovely flowers and gorgeous plants all around.

This is a Must-visit attraction in Dubbo. This Japanese garden is beautiful with a little lake that has some of the most amazing colourful, huge sized Koi fish, few different types of ducks and other birds, many exotic varieties of trees plants and flowers etc. There's also bbq and seating areas located within. The relaxing atmosphere here provides for a refreshing experience. Highly recommended.

Beautifully landscaped and well maintained gardens and playground. The playground is fenced with several picnic shelters, and a toilet block right in the middle, with a flying fox, large concrete slide, climbing frames, hammock, and wheelchair accessible swing which appeared to be in good working order when we visited. Note that although fenced, the gate is left open. The Japanese gardens are enclosed separately to the playground. It features meandering pathways, a magnificent weeping willow and a large pond with waterfall, ducks and koi. Small children need close supervision in this space due to easy access to the water. There are also toilet facilities at the back of the Japanese gardens. Definitely worth a visit for all ages. We loved it so much we came twice during our stay in Dubbo.

The botanic garden development began in 1999 and currently comprises one adventure playground, and five distinctive garden spaces; Shoyoen Japanese Garden, the Sensory Garden, the Biodiversity Garden, the Oasis Valley and the Wiradjuri Garden. It is open 7 days with shorter time on weekends. You can book for guided tours by calling the council. Alternatively there is an audio app that you can download on your mobile phone. It is over a large area and can take some hours to visit. The Japanese house on site has limited numbers at any one time and hence needs to be prebooked. Popular place, need to go early to avoid the heat as well. You can get there by car or public transport. Toilets available. Uneven terrain, lot of walking. You can spend several hours here depending on your interests. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Free entry. Beautiful place. Lots to see especially in spring when blooms are out. Lovely place for picnic. Great place for photography.

Dundullimal Homestead, built in 1842 by retired army officer John Maughan, is Australia's oldest standing timber slab homestead. Maintained by the National Trust, it offers a glimpse into early colonial life with its well-preserved property including a church, shed, and stables. Visitors can explore the house and grounds while learning about pioneer history through informative displays. The homestead provides insight into isolated rural life during European settlement and serves as an event venue with accessible amenities.
Lots of history here, they have tried to keep it very original. Worth the look if you are into old stuff or history. Cost $15 per adult (July 2025)

My dog and I had a very pleasant morning sitting in the winter sun having a Devonshire tea before we exploring the grounds. The staff were friendly and the site was quite interesting.

It is a heritage-listed former pastoral station and now cultural facility, house museum and events centre. The Australian colonial slab hut-type homestead is located approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) south of Dubbo It is believed to be the oldest surviving slab hut house in Australia. It was built around 1840 as the head station of this 6,500-hectare (16,000-acre) squatting run. The homestead is also Dubbo's oldest building open to the public. Its interior is relatively sophisticated for its type, with an imposing sitting room and is noted for its tent-shaped plaster ceiling, and wallpaper reproduced from an 1850s pattern. The house is furnished with original period furniture. Popular place, lots of tourists and locals. Fair bit of walking around under shade. Toilets available. Cafes available. You have to book and pay for a tour to be able to see it. This can be done online. At the end of the tour you are given scones and tea. Gift/souvenir shop available on site. Friendly staff and great service. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Beautiful place. Lots to see. Parking is easy. Great place for photography.

Devonshire Teas, why are they so great! And they certainly were here, the lovely volunteers recommended them and why not. But, we came to see the house and learn a little of the area’s history. I’m glad it was saved from ruin and is now an amazing example of early settlement and local wealth. Mind you, those days must of been very tough. The grounds are well maintained and the displays informative. Thank you all for putting on the day for us to enjoy.

Really interesting and a lovely wander around the property in quiet and sun. Sat in the shade with an ice - cream at the end of the wander, so peaceful.

Fantastic! What a beautiful location and an educational tour regarding the homestead, stables, church, gardens, etc. Lyn was a wealth of knowledge and able to answer all of our questions. We also thoroughly enjoyed a delicious Devonshire tea. The website advised that the Homestead was open from 11-3 which is correct, but it’s worth noting that the cafe closes at 2. The volunteers were lovely to chat with. My Mum, sister & I really loved and appreciated our experience at this Homestead - definitely worth a visit!

It houses the Dubbo museum, a regional art gallery, and a contemporary cafe featuring locally sourced produce. Visitors can explore permanent and traveling exhibitions in the expansive gallery, delve into the region's history at the museum with unique artifacts like a carved tree of cultural significance to local Aboriginal people, a 1950s classroom, and Australia's largest preserved wool wagon.
Well worth a visit if in the town. I loved seeing the waste 2 art exhibition. This year was themed “Toys” was great to see what can be created by school groups and community groups. Free entry.

Good exhibits about the area but a shame there was no interactive things which would be great for kids and adults alike. The view at the back where there is a Cricket pitch is stunning. Love the 1950's style classroom.

Absolutely fantastic facility. The museum was in the same building as the art gallery with a fantastic restaurant between them. The museum was very informative and the displays were innovative. I found the art exhibition somewhat confronting and feel that it needed a warning for parents. Highly recommended when in Dubbo

Interesting museum full of local history, even a school room. Cafe was good. Good coffee and scones, friends recommend the chicken salad. Exhibits free. Outdoor and indoor seating. Very pleasant.

Beautiful location for work meetings as we have organised sessions via the auditorium on many occasions. There is the ability to stroll back in time through the historical artefacts and rooms on display for those who wish to learn more n the Western Plains culture. For those who love local fish river roasters coffee and a delicious feed too, the creo cafe on site has a divine range of pastries and baked goods , as well as all day breakfast options . Parking on site and on both corner streets too is a bonus.

Didn't mind that the 2 other spaces were closed due to preparing for another event. The Indigenous artists exhibition just blew me away. Am emotional tour de force (sic) The museum exhibits were also very good and well displayed. Only quibble... Very littlr about the history of indigenous peoples of the area.

Historic Sites
Old Dubbo Gaol, a heritage-listed site, offers guided tours and interactive exhibits that provide insight into the dark history of the Australian judicial system. Built in 1871 and used as a penitentiary from 1847 to 1966, this well-preserved prison now serves as a museum featuring animatronic models of inmate life, a gallows pole where eight men were executed, solitary confinement cells, and more.
Well maintained buildings and grounds. Difficult to imagine the living conditions the prisoners had to endure all those years ago. Many rooms had photos and stories of the prisoners and offences committed. A replica gallows in the yard. A gallery of uniforms and memorabilia. Also got to see and participate in a skit preforming an escape attempt. What a hoot. Pension discounts available.

Such an interesting and historic place. Very eerie walking through the jail cell building. Worth a visit. Street parking or parking near the information center available. Small little gift shop and toilets on site.

The old gaol has a fascinating history. You can do self-guided tours. Lots of info, pictures and holograms to bring to life the stories of the prisoners. Definitely recommend when in Dubbo.
Paul H — Google review
I truly enjoyed the night tour. Lots more information on prisoners stories, more quiet to be able to hear and the two fantastic tour guides Chad and Milla. Enthusiastic, full of life and great sense of humour, excellence is my word for these wonderful young people. Thank you so much for an memorable and fun night. I did attend the day before and ended up leaving. Two groups of schools entered, at different times. Sadly it was so noisy we couldn't hear ourselves think. I feel the public could be informed of school visits to work around the school schedule, so the public can make a decision to whether to attend at that time. I feel the teachers, parents and dubbo jail have an obligation to teach our children some good old manners. This allows children to listen and respect others around them and some thoughtfulness to others. Constantly ringing the big bell was not only annoying but deafening. Never an issue or a problem on the kids having some fun, but not Constantly over and over. It was so bad we all left. But overall a fantastic experience.

Fun experience for kids with a show where kids can help a convict escape! Also really interesting and educational for Australian history.

Plenty to see and do here despite it looking really dull from the outside. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. There are character performances and self-guided tours of the cells, hospital and grounds. Plenty of exhibits and photos of the executed prisoners, if you like that part of the macabre. Worth a visit if you're in town. We spent about 90 minutes there.

Geez it wouldn’t have been an enjoyable stay in the Old Dubbo Gaol back in the day! Very well preserved and presented, gave you a real sense of what it would have been like to be a prisoner here years ago, stinking hot in Summer and bloody freezing in Winter…damn!! Glad we stopped in to check it out!

The Dubbo Observatory is a local stargazing hub offering educational programs and guided night sky tours. Visitors can marvel at the celestial wonders through various telescopes, capturing stunning astrophotography with their own cameras. The observatory's expert guides provide insightful commentary on stars, planets, and galaxies, making it an ideal destination for astronomy enthusiasts of all ages. With ample parking and friendly staff, it's a recommended stop for those seeking an unforgettable astronomical experience in Dubbo.
I had an amazing experience at the Dubbo observatory. I thought I knew a lot about astronomy so it was excellent to learn some new facts! Peter was super knowledgeable and shared so much information and I loved how he had a variation of looking at stars, planets and moons. If I could I would have asked a billion questions but only managed to ask 1000 lol. Would recommend this wholesome experience where you turn your phone off and look at the stars. Being a star lover, if I could give 100 stars I would x

Enjoyable if there are no clouds. We were lucky to have a clear sky at night. The presentation was informative and useful for children. The star gazing was spectacular. Recommends to choose a night when it's a new moon and clear sky for the best experience.
G D — Google review
We had a beautiful clear night for visiting Dubbo Observatory. Friendly staff, very welcoming. A small selection of items and postcards available for purchase as a souvenir. A talk given while scopes were being set up was outside, rather than in their small theatrette. I personally would have held talk inside sitting down before going outside to point out astronomical highlights, as it was a long time to be standing about.. Witnessed with the naked eye at least two satellites and two shooting stars during our session, which we were thrilled to see. A great time was had by all. Would recommend if you are interested in our universe. Best time to go would be a clear night with no moon.
E C — Google review
It was a great experience, Peter is knowledgeable and passionate of his craft. You would learn a lot. We joined the 9 pm session, it was chilly, so rag up when you visit there. The telescopes were impressive and to actually experience it... Mind blowing. Worth a visit. 😊
Chen C — Google review
An absolute must for people interested in the stars and space! Highly recommend coming here, it might get cold, but it'll be worth it. You get to see a good range of what is out there. Peter is very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. The cost of entry was reasonable, and when checking against other observatories, is a bit cheaper than the others too. We left the observatory frantically googling how expensive it is to buy a telescope with similar digital calibration. One day... one day.
Michael L — Google review
Unmissable Dubbo experience! Peter and Jane are such a great team, making star gazing accessible and interactive. The session included a presentation which taught me so much, followed by the opportunity to view a wide variety of outer space landscapes. It was really special opportunity, set against the soundtrack of the distant sounds of the zoo. Suitable for kids old enough to understand not to touch the telescopes :) 10/10 would recommend!
Sophie V — Google review
Extremely cool and humbling experience. Interesting presentation and very knowledgeable guide who took the time to answer my silly questions. A little bonus that the astronomer’s surname is Starr — nominative determinism at its finest!

Great experience for anyone interested in astronomy! The Dubbo Observatory offers a fascinating look at the night sky, with knowledgeable guides who make complex topics easy to understand. The telescope viewing sessions are fantastic, seeing planets, stars, and galaxies up close is an unforgettable experience. A must-visit while in Dubbo, especially for families and anyone curious about space.

Red Earth Estate is a charming winery with a relaxed atmosphere, offering wine and cheese tastings in a beautiful garden setting. It also provides overnight parking for mobile homes. The estate is located near attractions such as the Old Dubbo Gaol, Macquarie River, Shoyoen Japanese Garden, and other wineries in the region. Visitors have praised the neat and tidy grounds of the vineyard and raved about the delicious dumplings served at the on-site restaurant.
The food is great - we had BBQ pork buns, chicken sticky rice, a selection of dumplings (prawn, chicken and vege) and custard buns and they were all yummy and fresh. Don't be put off by the appearance of the place. We also bought a bottle of 2019 rose which was nice, although it seems they no longer make wine from the vineyard on-site.
Nicola T — Google review
When we visited, they weren't very busy, so we got very personalized service! A tasting of 5 wines was only $5 Australian dollars, a bargain. It would've been free if we'd purchased two bottles of their wine. We also ordered a dozen fried dumplings of various flavors. They were delightful. It was a bit warm in the tasting room, but still comfortable. We enjoyed visiting with our server. I guess covid did a real number in their business, but they're getting back on their feet again. Beautiful area, right next to the Dubbo Zoo.
Joy S — Google review
We popped into Red Earth for a bit of a wine tasting as I had heard over the years that the wine here was good. When we arrived, the vines looked like they hadn’t been pruned for some time, and the undergrowth was quite dense. I am no vigneron or winemaker but to me, the vines seemed not overly cared for which was disappointing to see the vineyard like that. But we were there to taste wine, not pretend to be viticulturists 😉 We sampled three whites and reds each and they were all older vintages, 2020/2021 with nothing younger. That would explain the vineyards and I’m guessing Covid had something to do with it as well. The wines were “ok” and we bought a bottle each but to be honest, I wouldn’t run back to buy any more. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to sit down and try the dumplings but the aroma coming out of the kitchen was nice. Maybe that is what is keeping the Estate afloat as it doesn’t look like they produce any more vintages, it would cost a lot to get it back into shape too. Anyway, it was a nice break from the city…. just don’t recommend the wines.
David K — Google review
Currently the only winery in Dubbo, but it's well worth a look at if you've done a day at the zoo and need a wine and a feed. Just around the corner from the zoo and right next to the observatory, you'll find this humble little vineyard. Wines by the glass are $7 and they go down well with the handmade dumplings. I tried their Riesling and Rosé, both went down a treat. Don't expect a fancy high class polished place. It's just good wine with delicious dumplings amongst the vineyard. The combination works. The service is also friendly and welcoming.

Zoos & Aquariums
Taronga Western Plains Zoo, established in 1977, is a 300-hectare open-range sanctuary featuring over 4,000 rare and endangered animals from around the world. Families can embark on a zoofari trip by hiring bicycles or Mini Mokes to explore the 6km circular track. The zoo's large enclosures mimic natural habitats for its over 700 animals. Visitors can't miss the Lion Pride Lands Exhibit and should consider driving through the zoo, especially during summer.
We drove our own car around the park which was very convenient, saved the legs of the kids y being able to just drive through at our own pace and have our car with us with snacks etc. The exhibits are very good, very easy to see animals, and we were very impressed with how much space the animals have to themselves. There are very well placed fences, making some areas seem like there is no fan e at all, but your completely safe at all times. I was particularly impressed with the Galapagos Tortosis, I'd never seen them before, same with the little honey eater birds. The hospital was impressive as was the expansion e platypus area. Only down side was the staff was not very friendly. Maybe they were all having a bad day, especially in the gift shop. It was a long weekend after all. But well worth the visit.

We came out to Dubbo in the July School holidays to visit the zoo with the kids. We’ve talked about it for a number of years and finally booked it in. We were considering staying at the zoo but you would need to remortgage the house to afford it so we choose much more affordable accommodation in town. We were considering booking the carts to get around as one of our kids has a disability and can’t ride a bike but they were all booked out for our visit. This actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise as you can easily navigate the park if you have your own car and save some cash on the carts. It was super easy to ride around the loop on the bikes with the other kids and only one spot where we had to drop the gears to push up the hill. Was good being able to ride the bikes up to each enclosure and plenty of bike racks throughout the park to leave the bikes. We did the safari adventure but was a bit disappointed this was an additional cost on top of the park entry, surely this should be included, just feels like something you shouldn’t have to pay extra for. Overall the enclosures are great with heaps of room for the animals to roam but like most zoos the animals do look a bit bored and need some action. All the herding animals are too relaxed as there is no predator threats and the predators just chilling as they don’t have to hunt anymore. I’m sure punters would pay good money to see the animals in a more real world environment. Imagine seeing the big cats in action stalking their pray, now that would bring in the crowds. Anyways, I’ll just saviour the time I got to see a white lion take down a water hen in its enclosure many years ago at a different zoo……priceless. Overall an enjoyable day out with the kids.

We have just enjoyed a completely magical day at Dubbo Zoo. We booked a night at Zoofari Lodge. The day we spend leisurely cruising round the zoo in our car (we would have hired a “golf cart” but it was quite hot and very windy so we settled for aircon comfort). We did two circuits of the 5km round trip and saw pretty much all that we could have hoped for. Up close and personal with lions giraffes and a whole host of other animals. We checked into our lodge at two pm and sat on our balcony watching zebras rhinos and giraffes wander past as they grazed the food which had been left for them in front of our rooms. We were then taken to hand feed giraffes, and then onto a private after hours tour of the zoo after it was closed to public. Our guide Hallie was really informative, giving us a great commentary as well as answering all of our questions, and there were many! What a great experience, one we hope to repeat. And we still have another day to roam the zoo tomorrow. Andy and Gabs.

This is a great zoo with a wonderful variety of animals. I'd love if there were more carts available for hire as we arrived at time of opening and they were all sold out. It's a big day and by the time you get past the waterhole it's exhausting to think about getting out of the car....once again! But overall a wonderful day.
Kristy S — Google review
Quite disappointed with my visit. Most of the animals looked tired and not very active — the only tiger seemed depressed, pacing back and forth in the same spot. The rhino was just laying down the whole time, looking quite lifeless and uninterested. Didn’t see any platypus at all, even though there’s a Platypus HQ. I stayed around the viewing deck and pond area for about 15 minutes, trying to spot one under the trunks, branches, or hiding spots — but not a single platypus in sight. There was only one siamang, and a few Tasmanian devils, but they were really far away because of the enclosure and fencing setup — it kept people at too much of a distance to see clearly. The lions were in a group, and one male lion seemed alert and aware of his surroundings, which was nice to see. The meerkats were plenty, but honestly, it felt quite repetitive since you pass by several meerkat viewing points along the way. There was only one small bird enclosure with a honeyeater and a few other birds. The place overall looked a bit run down, and most of the big animals were just too far to enjoy. The best part was the Galapagos giant tortoises — there were a few of them, we could view them up close, and they seemed well cared for. The koalas were also lovely; I managed to spot three of them resting. Overall, the $50 entry fee really didn’t feel worth it. Melbourne Zoo offered a much better experience for the price. Also, make sure to buy tickets beforehand if you want to feed the giraffes, as they sell out quickly and can’t be purchased on the spot.

We had a great time at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. You can drive your own car through the zoo for free, hire a bike (not sure how much), or rent a cart for around $80 a day. There are several stops where you can park, get out, and see the animals up close. The zoo is really well maintained and easy to explore. We had burgers at the cafe freshly made and good! They mentioned our tickets were valid for two days, though I’m not sure if that’s the same on weekdays.
Awon T — Google review
An awesome day out for the whole family. You can bicycle around, hire a buggy or even drive your own car, stopping at each enclosure with heaps of parking. Lots of animals to see in a more natural setting.

Great fun for families with young children and adults alike! The zoo is beautifully laid out, with spacious enclosures and plenty of opportunities to see the animals up close.
