A project once made fun of now stands as one of the most important places in WA history. When Nature's beauty and man's creativity gets merged, wonders get created .Such a wonder was built between 1898-1903 for the purpose of transporting water to the Easter Goldfields of Kalgoorile. The dam is now under the Water Corporation of WA and their website provides information about the dam details such as facilities,Opening hours , direction etc. https://www.watercorporation.com.au/About-us/Visiting-our-dams/Mundaring-Weir The No1 Pump Station is a great place to learn about the incredible early engineering technology that they had used to pump water nearly 600km from Mundaring Weir to the Goldfields. This place is really a must see and one of the beautiful places to know more about heritage, to take wonderful pictures of scenery and even spend time with family or friend groups. https://youtu.be/c3O16ZOH0Eg The place have picnic areas, public toilets and walking trails. This project once called as "Scheme Of Madness" was designed by Thomas Crowley Hodgson and was brought to life by an Engineer in Chief C.Y.O'Connor. At present day the weir supplies water to the Eastern Goldfields and Agricultural region. The walking trail experience throug the Weir , lawns and gardens are really a great experience to get to the historical importance of this place. The Mundaring Weir now forms a part of the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme or The Golden Pipeline.

The Mundaring dam is a top local attraction and just 15 minutes from the Mundaring town site. There are panoramic photo opportunities during a crossing of the dam wall. On one side is the picturesque reservoir and on the other the heritage pumping station with its tall chimney stack. A less explored area can be discovered at the far end of the dam wall (coming from Mundaring Weir Road). A steepish descent, down a series of steps (with handrail) to the base of the dam wall, leads visitors to the pumping station (100m). A tranquil place surrounds the museum with a few rest benches under some shady trees. There is also an interesting electronic meter that turns over / counts - every time 1000 litres of dam water is used in Kalgoorlie (located nearby the pumping station museum). The Mundaring Weir park area is extensive and perfect for BBQ's with a number of designated areas complete with stove tops. There is an abundance of majestic trees (many varieties). A natural habitat for birdlife and the perfect place for a relaxing stroll. A few friendly kangaroos are always out and about.
Leon W — Google review
Nice place to drive and cycle to. There are kangaroos, free fruit and a weir that supplies drinking water for Perth. Also there is the story and the bust of C.Y O'Connor. An engineer that supplied the goldfields with liquid gold (water). There is also a rose garden in the middle of nowhere, a great plethora of colours is observed during spring and a bit of summer. It is an awesome walk along the top of the weir.
Martin S — Google review
A wonderful place to visit on the Perth Hills, having the state’s one of the most important engineering structures, access to the weir overseeing the idyllic C Y O’ Connor lake, plenty of walk trails and benches through the greenery of wild flowers and trees. Large number of gas top barbecue facilities along with separate toilets for male, female, disabled on both sides (west and east) of the weir. Several water fountains nicely positioned, offering quick rehydration and a splash on the face on a hot day. We were lucky enough to have been greeted by a family of kangaroos in the bush to the east of the rose garden. The viewing area to the south of the C Y O’Connor Memorial offers a splendid view of the both sides of the weir. One caution; be aware of mosquitoes and flies in the afternoon.

This location was an incredible experience for both our family and friends. We enjoyed an entire day immersed in activities. This is an ideal spot for camping. The kids had a blast swimming, and the highlight was renting a kayak. 30-minute or 1-hour sessions priced at $16 and $26 respectively. Needless to say, we're looking forward to making this a frequent destination.

Everyone knows I love this place, food is soooo good, also considering is kinda remote, service is really good and place big and diverse. 100% recommend getting the matcha latte <3
Agus C — Google review
Surprising find in a relatively remote location. We had an iced coffee, mocha, prawn po boy (prawns were very tasty, I wish I'd ordered extra) The New York Reuben, some fries (especially good) and the pecan pie. Everything was very tasty. We will definitely stop in next time we're passing through.
Albert R — Google review
There was a long line, but the service was excellent. There is a kids playground attached to the restaurant. The burger was fresh and delicious. Kid’s nuggets were slightly overcooked and the Thai beef salad was a bit overdressed, so it was a little bitter, but the flavors is still good. Overall, it’s a great stopover between Albany and Perth.
Gin T — Google review
Been here many times over the years and I always look fwd to the fresh sandwiches on offer. The bread used to be lovely. Called on the way to Perth in August and the fresh sandwiches were off the menu as well as hot chips. Only toasties available. Then again today there was no sign of these items on the menu. The menu used to be quite extensive but it has reduced substantially. I paid $6 for a piece of banana bread and i was served a cold thin wedge. Subsequently i left it behind. I would be embarrassed to serve this up to anyone. It’s hard to find good consistent dining places and this ‘used’ to be one of them. Be giving it a wide berth in the future.
Marnie B — Google review
Stopped in on the way for a quick bite to eat went for the beef and peeper pie Pastry was nice and the filling was next level

It's a stop you need from Perth. The taste of the coffee was mild. Food was not bad. Our favourite is the breakfast wrap. Good service and helpful staff. (2024-09)

Shout out to the lovely German staff member on the counter today dishing out pies, toasties and coffees with a huge smile and friendly banter. We frequently stop here during our travels and will continue to do so. Love a little peruse of the unique shops here too!

Such an awesome wildlife experience. Shame it's so popular, but I'm glad it generates income for wildlife. Guides are super knowledgeable.

Really enjoyed our visit here. They are doing a fantastic job with saving these beautiful little creatures. Was a treat sitting in the dark with a red light and all these endangered animals hopping around us and the tour guide was really great you could hear the passion in his voice for them.

We saw all of the nighttime critters in the enclosure, which were as cute and fun to watch as expected. Shannon was a great guide, adding lots of interesting information and stories. Highly recommended!

Lovely experience! The lady was super nice and really knowledgeable. Unfortunately we saw no possums. We came for possums, we love possums. But we saw all the other animals! Even a Bilby! 10/10
Bridget Q — Google review
Fantastic evening, being shown multiple marsupials being kept safe here. Very informative talk given first, definitely alerted me to the hazards cats pose to wildlife. Everyone should have a chance to learn about these fantastic creatures and what we humans need to do to protect them.
Sally G — Google review
The best thing to do/experience in the narrogin/dryandra region! So many rare marsupials to see in a lovely sanctuary! It's a once in a lifetime experience because you won't be able to see these animals in the wild due to their reduced populations/endangered conservation status
Onyx S — Google review
Sensational experience. A splendid chance to see the native australian noctural marsupials feeding which is otherwise almost impossible to see. They have two large enclosed areas that are filled with a variety of marsupials which are fed during the nocturnal tour. It is a very nice sight to watch them feed and hop around. You will be very close to the animals and they will be observed under torch light. Not good for infants as staying quiet during the tour is essential. A good weekend tour from Perth

New Norcia Visitor Centre

The visitor centre is a great starting point for exploring Australia's only monastic town. The staff are friendly and informative, and the guided tours offer fascinating insights into the town's rich history. The gift shop is worth a visit, too—it features locally made wine, olive oil, and nut cake. A unique and peaceful place to visit.
Jigme T — Google review
Absolutely well worth the drive to experience this fascinating part of Western Australian history. The town tour was also definitely worth my time, giving us access to buildings unavailable to self guided, and getting stories from our knowledgeable guide about the history of this fascinating place founded all the way back in 1847! They had some impressive art both in the art gallery but also on the ceilings and walls of the chapels. The roadhouse had some decent enough food to keep me going but I did take home some Abbey Ale beer which I found quite delicious. My day actually exceeded my expectations, would suit anyone interested in architecture, art, WA/ Australian history, religious history or just enjoy quirky road trip curios. For anyone considering visiting, The tours are conducted at 11 and 1.30 and are 2 hours long. The museum/art gallery took me about an hour but someone who loves art could spend longer. The tour was completely secular focused on New Norcia's history and purpose with no pressure to participate in spiritual matters. For those whom are religious and wished to experience some of the spirituality of this place with the monks, mass was available to attend at 9 on Sunday (7.30 other days) and took 1 hour, and prayers in the oratory are conducted throughout the day. Everything was close walking distance. From the information centre the roadhouse for food was just a few minutes stroll, the church also a few minutes in the other direction. Bring sunscreen, a hat and water.
Mike H — Google review
We went out here for a day trip and really enjoyed it. The combined ticket was nice, need sun protection and water for the walking tour. Would have liked to of seen more on the tour but its main benefit was being able to go into the locked buildings. The rest of the township is self guided and I think we'll have to go back again for a good leisurely walk around and read all the plaques - it would have been nice to of seen everything worth seeing on the tour, open to the public or not. The museum and art gallery is a short walk around, good portions of the history and community missions. Wine, fresh bread, ale and other baked goods all available on site. Evening vespers were available to the public. Afternoon tours sometimes get the organist play in the church. Impressive art and wood craftsmanship throughout the town, all done by monks on site. By and large its unique - didnt know there was an active monastic township out here.
Abyss N — Google review
Really enjoyed our tour through the grounds and buildings of New Norcia with Melissa (?) Her knowledge was brilliant and very informative. Finished our stay with wine and fruit bread from the multitude of offerings in the gift store. Highly recommend

Oodles of things to see,do&the helpful staff are brilliant too! Such an interesting gift shop, with local jams&wines, jewelry, nicnacks, informative books&even clothing! I needed more eyes!
Jo K — Google review
I am deeply impressed from the history tour. Sue Lefroy fascinates with her professional knowledge and vivid storytelling to give insights from the good and the sad days of New Norcia. It is very respectful to the place and people lived and live here. I hope the spirit goes on in town as well as to each visitor.
Uǝƃlıƃ S — Google review
Well worth a stopover and doing the guided town tour which runs at 11am and 1.30pm daily. Very historical area and amazing buildings. The museum and art gallery are also well worth doing, It’s over 3 levels so allow plenty of time. Visit the gift shop as it’s full of things, can recommend the walnut fruit bread.
David W — Google review
This monastery does not face its past. The weak attempts to inform visitors of the abuses inflicted upon aboriginal families and children is barely acknowledged. Most of the “information” is in locked rooms you can only access via a paid two hour tour. There is a poor apology and the gift shop somehow adds insult to injury. This is white-washed, Jesus-washed history and it is high time the first Australians on this land were given the opportunity to reclaim their story. The fact that the aboriginal graves have no names on them is heartbreaking. This is a dark place.

You should visit here. It was an amazing experience, especially with Tracy. We did a 1:30pm tour for 2 hours. My parents were super tired after the tour but I was fascinated about history of New Norcia. Even I didn’t missed it any single minute ❤️🙏🫶
Seonhye C — Google review
My family and I have returned to New Norcia time and time again. There is so much to love here. From the comfortable and homely accommodation and meals, the rich history, the peaceful prayer with Benedictine monks, the museum full of riches and genuine art, the musical genius of Fr. Robert Nixon and the authentic kindness from Fr. John the Abbot. Stay for the numerous retreats and events, like the spectacular Abbot's Table, or simply for the sake of peace and prayer. While you're here, buy a translation of a rare Latin text that had never been translated to English before Fr. Nixon...! I cannot praise New Norcia enough. God willing, may this community endure for ever.

Highly recommend attending Sunday Mass if you can. Beautiful uplifting music sung by a small choir accompanied by a talented organist. Haunting sounds of pipe organ. Take the time to walk around the sacred grounds
Charmaine W — Google review
Visited this Monastery during my recent visit to Australia. It was interesting to find the timelines and wondered how the entire area was built by the priests and other well wishers. Most of the structure is intact even today and maintained carefully. The bakery which was started long back is still functioning and they are selling the bread at the information centre. Walked around the place and enjoyed each and every part of the Monastery.

The guided tour is not to be missed! A peaceful and picturesque place - easy to spend half a day here, between the guided tour and museum. Pleased to see the museum has a surprisingly healthy art collection! I hope they can recruit more monks and keep this place going. Michelle was an excellent and knowledgeable tour guide.

The York Motor Museum is a must-visit for car enthusiasts, featuring an extensive collection of classic cars, motorcycles, and racing bikes. Established in 1979 by Peter Briggs and James Harwood, the museum showcases vintage vehicles including the famous Never Never Tours Valiant ute from Crocodile Dundee. Located just a 90-minute drive from Perth in the historic town of York, it offers a great day trip or weekend getaway.
Great place to visit if you like car history. Only $10 concession and $12 normal

We saw this place from opposite where we were having our lunch and decided to make a visit. We were able to pay for entrance tickets on the spot and thereafter entered the museum where we spent around 30mins or so enjoying the views of the various models of cars and vehicles that were displayed in there. It was an amazing experience to see the well maintained vehicles with some dating back to many many years ago! Our 2 kids thoroughly enjoyed the visit and we took many pics with the models. Worth a visit if you are in the area!
A C — Google review
What a fantastic spot! The York Motor Museum is packed with treasures from the legendary Ford Model T and some seriously cool old motorbikes to a jaw-dropping 1958 Porsche Cabriolet. Every corner has something that makes you stop and go “wow.” The collection is beautifully kept, and the stories behind the cars make it even better. The staff are super friendly and clearly love what they do, which adds to the whole experience. Whether you’re a car nut or just curious, this place is a must-see when in York.
Tides T — Google review
I got dragged in here by my elderly father, and I admittedly was not keen. We were greeted by Jenny who was a ray of sunshine! While I'm not a great car enthusiast the array of history on display was fascinating. But I absolutely loved the stories of the original owners showing the history of particular vehicles on display. Learning about the owner, what role they played in the community, and about their families, complete with photos. This so was a real treat and I credit to this historic town.

Very beautiful place to visit. Everywhere you look, you find something unique, old, and special from cars to small things like vintage fuel cans. Very well maintained, clean, and organized. We really enjoyed it. The lady at the entrance was very friendly. You can tell that the owner has really been collecting for years and years.

This is a great museum and you don’t have to be a car fanatic to enjoy it. There are cars and bikes that you can admire just for their sheer beauty. They really knew how to design cars back in the day. Loved the little retro caravan too. I also enjoyed reading about past owners and their families and learning how the cars arrived at the museum. Friendly staff, cheap entry and you can take as long as you like. Well worth a visit.

Avon Suspension Bridge in York is a must-visit attraction. It's conveniently located near Lowe Street and has recently been updated, featuring a large park with playground equipment and new public facilities. While there are no nearby eateries, it's perfect for a picnic. The bridge itself is a novelty but requires caution with young children. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views of the Avon River and surrounding landscape while taking leisurely walks or having a family barbecue at the adjacent park area.
Lovely piece of history that just keeps standing. Views are insta-worthy. Tranquil and soothing. Lovely spot to pause and take in some nature. Great spot to take a breath and feel alive away from the rush of daily life. Heaps of ducks and other birds to watch.

The suspension bridge certainly does swing. Some wooden planks require maintenance and are lifting. Great views of the river and a small Church on reaching the other side (unfortunately the Church is locked during the week - open on Sundays).

Neat little suspension bridge just off the side of the nearby playground. We had a nice stroll across the bridge where we saw several campervans parked just across the river. Novel experience of walking on the suaying bridge! Lovely scenery all around...

This area has been updated recently. There is a large park with playground equipment for kids. There is also a relatively new public bathroom. Nice area for a picnic. I wish there were some eateries nearby for a coffee or snack. For these, you'd have to walk to the main street. The suspension bridge is a novelty. Be careful with your little kids when on the bridge.

Nice location for a visitor centre and has friendly staff. Good to spend a couple of hours watching the Avon river and the birds. Worth visiting the indigenous gallery.

Lookouts
Mount Brown Lookout is a must-visit spot in York, Western Australia, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the town and its surrounding countryside. The lookout sits at an elevation of 1,122 ft and can be reached via a 7.5km hike from York, passing through the historic swinging bridge and Memorial Grove. The trail also showcases local flora and fauna along the way. Alternatively, visitors can opt for a quick drive to reach the lookout.
So it was the first 1st August 2025 when I had my visit. So peaceful and tranquil it was a perfect moment. Views for miles literally and could still see some canola fields that had not been harvested yet. Plenty of parking and bbq picnic area is just half way up on the right hand side.

It is a wonderful place to look the york city from top. You can easily park your car over there and enjoy the scenic beauty pf nature.

Lovely lookout, as far as you can see you will see beautiful yellow canola fields.

Windward Ballooning was a fantastic experience. We had a very peaceful journey on a great day!! All of the ground staff & pilots were amazing and very lovely. The breakfast is the perfect way to finish the experience.

A wonderful sunrise experience with the sun at one end and the moon at the other. Awesome! The staff were very helpful, polite, and went out of their way to assist. The total experience was awesome. A perfect landing. A wonderful champagne breakfast

We had an amazing experience with Windward Ballooning! My partner organised it for my birthday, and it was the perfect way to celebrate. From the start, they ensured we were well-informed, and I felt very safe during the flight. If you're apprehensive about heights, this is an excellent first step to overcoming that fear. I highly recommend this wonderful experience. The champagne breakfast was a nice touch to conclude the adventure, although the food could have been better. Overall, the team at Windward did an excellent job!
Natalie Y — Google review
My second flight with Windward in 3 years and honestly, there is nothing one can fault about a hot air balloon flight with these guys. The team at Windward (Brian, Shane and Brenton) are professional, friendy and go out of their way to ensure everyone has an epic experience. And Safety is paramount as well.... To top off an awesome flight we had a fully cooked breakfast at a local bistro in Northam. Could not have gone any better. If you haven't been up in a hot air balloon, you don't know what you're missing out on.

Absolutely awesome flight. Thankyou to John and Shane and crew for the amazing time. I absolutely loved it. Will definitely be letting people know to come and book with you guys. I just wanted to get back in and go up again. You guys are awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍

We had the most amazing morning! We were greeted by such a friendly lady for tea and coffee before Brendan, victor and Shane took us out to the most beautiful site where we seen the sunrise from a spectacular balloon. All the staff members worked so hard to give us an enjoyable, safe and memorable experience. Every question was answered with such thought and patience. The saftey briefings were spot on. The breakfast after was perfect and plentiful, even included great gluten free options! Could not recommend this enough and can’t thank the guys enough for all their help and for being so accomadting! Will definitely be back!

Fantastic memorable family experience. We were keen to do during Canola season, and it did not disappoint, the morning was perfect. We had about an hour in the balloon. A little icy on our feet, recommend wearing warm socks. Sven, our pilot was excellent, knowledgeable and we felt very safe. Windward was well organised, from booking to the great ground team all round from start to finish. Lovely breakfast to follow. Highly recommend.

We decided to pop up on the train for the day. What a wonderful Aussie pub with great food, great drinks and excellent service. Penny and her team are just first rate and I could not recommend this place highly enough.
Chuck C — Google review
We had a drive from Perth, to the Ettamogah Pub in Cunderdin, because it's a traditional country pub designed like the 'Etamogah' cartoons which were by the infamous Ken Maynard. The interior was nice with lots of cartoon drawing pages and images around the pub. And the food was of good standard and was enjoyable too.
Niru M — Google review
Great stop for a lunch break. Good value food options , eg roast meat and gravy roll for $10, as well as usual pub grub. Unique style, but large indoor and outdoor areas.
Rich L — Google review
Looks cool, iconic. Inside not so much. Walked in at 11:45 on Sunday, chairs on the tables, a stench coming from the toilet corridor. One server down the end near the kitchen talking to two other customers about a function? Either way we waited for 15 minutes and ended up walking out and continued our way back to Perth. Recommendation: Take a photo outside and don’t bother going in. Male and Female toilets filthy, stinky and graffitied up, it felt extremely grubby in the main bar, every surface needs a good scrub, fridges practically empty.
Amber W — Google review
Had chops, mash, apple sauce and NO vegetables. The chops needed to go back due to under cooked. Chops mostly fat. Staff brilliant. Everything on the menu didn't have vegetables..... poor

Sadly I wasn't convinced by what was written on the menu and what was received. Ordered fillet steak and mushroom sauce. Cut of beef was rump and sauce was gravy with a couple of mushrooms on it. It was nice and cooked well but, I had to argue for a sauce refund.

Took my 13 year old son and we hired motorbikes and safety gear. Great open tracks so beginners don't have to worry about hitting trees, and a longer "enduring" track that weaves around the farm and through the bush also. Variety of tracks and various jumps from small to medium table tops. I hadn't ridden for 20 years and my son had never ridden, but by the end of the day we had progressed up to doing some great jumps and landing them well. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED family activity.
Fayley A — Google review
Took my boy there for his first ride today, was impressed straight away by the courtesy of the guys running it! They fitted Hugo up and gave him some key pointers and he was off! Definitely heading back to camp for the weekend ASAP!
Trent P — Google review
Wont be back! I've seen the track just deteriorate over the last few years. I used to go a few times a year, i went there today no track maintenance done since the first time i went there!! Very very disappointing! Surprise pot holes on the other side of the jumps. Worn out jump lips. Well well over grown grass. Maintenance work at the facilities still not finished. Unkept camping areas. Fire pits need replacing. A place so far away from the perth cbd needs to put in the extra effort to draw the numbers. The lack of effort has left me with a bad taste. I will be taking my business else where. (Edit 3 years on my opinion still remains, i have not returned! Those who have, Have noted that it is the same unkempt place)

This is a great place to take the family for the day or the week. The staff there are really friendy and know what they are doing. I took my 6, 10 and 13 year old kids ther for the day and they rode around for 7 hours non stop. There are motor bikes to hire or you can bring your own. There is also camping facilities right next to the office. Well worth the drive out to Wyalkatchem, only two and half hours from Perth.

We stopped to charge up our new BYD Seal and Merredin has a fast charger. A pleasant walk through the main street brought us to the Merredin hot bread shop. What a gem! They offer the most amazing array of delicious bakery products and great coffee. It would be a lovely day trip only 3 hours out from Perth. You could even take the train and spend a couple of days in the town. Great how charging the EV gives the added bonus of exploring little towns along the way Much nicer than the generic roadhouses all across Australia. There’s a bonus for the towns too as we have time for a cuppa and nearly always buy something.

On a recent trip to Merredin I visited the visitor information centre Peter was very helpful and informative of the local attractions and facilities. He gave an excellent tour of the Cummins theatre .which has a fascinating history about the original owners, how it was constructed ,the many celebrities that have passed through and saw the beautiful heritage building. This time of year the country scenery is stunning

Wave Rock Caravan Park

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Wave Rock Caravan Park is located at the base of the striking, wave-shaped natural rock formation that is approximately 15 meters tall and billions of years old. The caravan park offers basic amenities and clean facilities, including hot showers. While there is no camp kitchen, there are serviceable BBQs available. The management has been praised for their outstanding service and helpfulness to guests.
This is a great place to visit and the Wave Rock Caravan Park is the place to stay when visiting the area. Wave Rock is literally right behind the caravan park so walking to the Rock for morning and evening photos is no problem at all. Your caravan park admission also gets you access to the nearby salt rock pool at the Wave Rock Resort across the road which is a must see and only a 2 minute drive from the campground. Facilities are clean and there’s plenty of space between sites.
Chris E — Google review
Great location for accessing wave rock. The lady who served us was rushing us and seemed annoyed that we hadn't booked even though there was space. We were parked next the road but it was very quiet didnt hear cars at all. We had a powered site. The bathrooms were clean, laundry and kitchen were good too.
Emily B — Google review
It is 3.5 out of 5. The Park is in a fantastic location. A short walk to Wave Rock & Hippo's Yawn. In the centre of the park is a large undercover area which is excellent. The small camp kitchen needs a new gas/electric stove as the old one is not that good. Amenities are old however very serviceable. Great water pressure. I do question if they get cleaned regularly. The male toilet seats desperately needs to be replaced. One of the door's to the male shower's was covered in graffiti and had 2 holes. The caravan sites had plenty of room. For a regional park is serviceable. They need to spend some money to bring the rating above a 4.
Silvano C — Google review
Great location, $45 for a powered site but no water. Service wasn’t amazing, we were very rushed, treated less then for not having a booking and very limited information provided. Amenities were very clean and plentiful. Plenty of bathrooms and showers and great communal space
Tegan I — Google review
We can't comment on the rooms as we were there in our caravan. The location is excellent for going to Wave Rock, Hippos Yawn and the nearby walks. We believe the original owners we're dedicated to promoting this amazing location but suspect the current owners are exploiting the location. We feel Wave Rock and areas are as good as Uluru and it's a shame effort sn't being put into the park. Amenities are somewhat clean but regular deeper cleans are necessary, such as removing built up dirt in the corners of bathrooms. Camp BBQs are unfortunately left unclean by campers (no signage to clean and no cleaning equipment provided) also only serviced once a day by staff, which during our stay meant all 4 BBQs we're left unclean all day.
Lyvern S — Google review
We unexpectedly needed accommodation overnight in Hyden. It was late in the day so we popped into the caravan park. The staff were really unfriendly with no smile throughout the whole time there, however, we were very grateful that there was a cabin available in the resort. The cabin we stayed in was in dire need of a renovation. We had items ready to cook but at least one burner wasn’t working. The floor felt dusty to walk on, so ended up keeping socks on. Went to have a shower & the hot water literally just trickled out so ended up with a cold shower. When we went to go to bed, we pulled back the covers to find hair on the sheets. One side had long dark hair, the other looked like men’s leg hair so I don’t think the sheets had been changed from the prior guests. Ended up having to sleep in the kids single beds. There is a sign up in the kitchen asking guests to wash their items but there was no cloths to wash them with. We ended up leaving the dirty dishes there as didn’t think it was fair to the next guests to have items washed with our hands. Then we were worried about the cleanliness of the items we had already used. The place wasn’t cheap but it is definitely not up to standard. Would recommend you stay elsewhere or keep driving.
Julie J — Google review
Didn’t stay in rooms but had a powered site. Tried to book on line but it wouldn’t allow us. Got there and had the rudest lady there that just rushed us through with payment and a brief explanation of things. Other ladies the next day were very pleasant and helpful. There for 2 days, amenities were dirty and hadn’t been cleaned while we were there. No soap in the dispensers either. Location was excellent for access to wave rock. However the hand rails going up the rock need addressing as does the path walking to hippos yawn from wave rock, very over grown. But wave rock was truly amazing and that’s what we went there for.
Jane S — Google review
Old Receptionist VERY VERY rude! Attempted online booking, dates blacked out. Rang and attempted a phone booking, left a message as requested, no return call. Arrived at caravan park only to be talked to like a dog. Old receptionist said they've got no time for online bookings or to return calls. Threw pamflets at us and told us to read. Very Rude, NO people skills, a disgrace!!! We stayed at Wave Rock short stay instead and had a beautiful, peaceful and comfortable night! 100% credit to the caretakers of Wave Rock Short Stay!!

Hippo's Yawn is a striking rock formation located about 5 km from Hyden town in Western Australia. It stands at about 12.6 meters high and resembles a yawning hippopotamus, minus the teeth, which gives it its name. The site is easily accessible via a short walking trail from Wave Rock and offers great photo opportunities due to its unique appearance.
Just fantastic. You can drive but the easy walk from Wave Rock is wonderful. Make sure you have insect repellent or face shield or carry a leafy branch to seat away the flies.

Words cannot express how awesome this road trip is out to wave rock. Pack snacks plenty of water you cannot go wrong. It’s easy to both walk or drive from wave rock make sure you get a selfie.
Clinton H — Google review
We followed the trail around from Wave Rock to see the yawn and yes it does look like a hippo yawning. The trail from the rock makes you feel like you are definitely in the outback. Look out for the local lizards too.
Shaun L — Google review
Located about a 2 minute drive from Wave Rock (or a 1.2km walk along the trail from Wave Rock), is a formation called Hippo’s Yawn. It’s in an open clearing a very short walk from the car park and once you arrive, it really does look like a hippo yawning! The cave itself is quite large but it’s the “top lip” of the hippo that gives the impression of a yawn. You can’t really walk too far into the cave but you definitely get an idea of it’s size once up close. You really don’t need long to visit Hippo’s Yawn. 10-15 minutes is plenty to have a look at the cave, read the information sign and take some pics.

Hippo Yawn at Hyden Visited on 21/5/2022 Hypo's Yawn is about 5 km from Hyden town, and 1 km following a trail from the base of the Wave Rock. It is a giant granite boulder with a shallow cave, about 12,6 m high from the ground to the top. The rock's resemblance to a yawning hippo, minus the teeth, has given it its name. It is a great spot for selfish. One looks rather small standing just at the bottom if it's mouth.
Sin C — Google review
Worth for 10 mts walk or 1.5 km drive from wave rock
ASR Q — Google review
Hippo's Yawn was the next stop after Wave Rock, another stunning rock formation, connected to Wave Rock by a one km stretch of walking track, apparently, Hippo's Yawn is the second most visited site in the region. This series of granite boulders seem to spring out of the land below and is the opening to a shallow cave. You can do the walk or drive down the road a little and park right in front of the formation, no waking required.

Mulka's Cave and Gnamma Walk Trail is a must-visit natural attraction in the southwest of Western Australia. The cave features some of the best Aboriginal art in the region, with its name stemming from an Aboriginal legend. Along with other remarkable granite outcrops like Wave Rock and The Humps, it draws over 100,000 tourists annually. The hiking trails offer fascinating stories and information, including Aboriginal rock art and legends about Mulka.
Significant place. Lovely walks. Great place to explore. Dog friendly. Minimal resources at main parking area, so be self sufficient on your walks. We Walked to the top of the Hump- views were 360 and spectacular.
Paula P — Google review
Worthwhile checking out as it's not far from wave rock and shows some rock art. Strongly recommend doing the walking trail as the views from the top of the hill are spectacular.
Chris C — Google review
🪶 Experience: A fascinating and spiritual site filled with ancient Aboriginal rock art and deep cultural history. The cave is small but powerful — you can still see handprints and markings that are thousands of years old. It’s peaceful, quiet, and surrounded by natural bushland, giving it a special atmosphere of respect and mystery. 🚗 Access & Facilities: Easy to reach by car from Wave Rock (about 15 minutes). There’s a car park, clear signage, and a short walking trail leading to the cave. No facilities on-site, but toilets and food are available back at Wave Rock. 🛡️ Safety: Safe and easy to visit. The paths are short and well-maintained, though the rocks can be slippery after rain — good shoes recommended. 🚶‍♂️ Walkability: Very accessible with gentle walking tracks suitable for most ages. The loop trail around the area offers nice views and a calm connection with nature. 🎯 Nearby Activities: Combine your visit with Wave Rock, Lake Magic, or Hippo’s Yawn — all within a short drive. The surrounding area is perfect for photography and quiet reflection. 📝 Summary: A must-see for anyone visiting Wave Rock. Mulka’s Cave offers a moving glimpse into Australia’s Indigenous heritage, set in a serene and natural environment. Respectful, educational, and unforgettable. 🖐️🌿🇦🇺
Krimo C — Google review
Because I suffer from COPD, I can only walk a short distance. We only had to walk 100 meters or so. Mulka's Cave is located within the vicinity of Wave Rock in Hyden Western Australia. The name Mulka comes from an Aboriginal legend associated with the cave. Mulka was the illegal son of a woman who fell in love with a man with whom marriage was forbidden according to their law. It is believed that a result of breaking these rules, she bore a son with crossed eyes. Even though he grew to be an outstandingly strong man of colossal height, his crossed eyes prevented him from aiming a spear accurately and becoming a successful hunter. Out of frustration, it is said Mulka turned to catching and eating human children, and he became the terror of the district. He lived in Mulka's Cave, where the imprints of his hands can still be seen, much larger and higher than that of an ordinary man. Mulka's Cave is located 18 kilometres north of Wave Rock off Lovering Road.
Donna D — Google review
Amazing to see Aboriginal art in a cave. I highly recommend coming to see it and learning about some of the local stories! The walk to the cave from the car park is about 200m and there are about 4 big steps and a ramp to get up to the cave. You need to bend/ squat a little bit to get into the entrance to the cave.
L H — Google review
It was very interesting, the story of Mulka was very disturbing. Definitely worth the visit
Emily B — Google review
The stories and information along the hiking trails are so interesting and worth the walk. Took our little dog along. She loved it. So good to have some dog friendly places which are far to scarce in WA. The Aboriginal rock art and legend around Mulka is facinsting.

Great spot, plenty of camping spots, one flushing toilet for the camping area. Phone service isn't great, you will need to clind the hill for reception. Very clean free campin.

Great place to visit. As good as the famous Wave Rock but without the crowds. Only saw two other people whilst we were there. The campsite looked good as well although we didn't stay there. Has a toilet and firepits and plenty of space.

If you need somewhere to stay for a night of peace and tranquillity whilst resetting the soul in front of a camp-fire, in season of course, you can't miss staying here. There's plenty of room for all and any type of form of off grid camping. You'll love it.

Very well set up and layed out. A lot of displays and information. There are things that brought back both fond and not so fond memories. Set on 2 levels, not sure of wheelchair access for L2, so would enquire prior. So much to see. $5 for me but $2 for seniors, well worth the entry.

Love Coolgardie, great spot for a picnic with good toilet facilities. Remember our family trips to Kalgoorlie as a child.

Awesome experience The locals were very accommodating and happy to share stories and pointing out even more interesting facts about their region. Highly recommend a visit.

What a fantastic opportunity there is something for everyone from a beautiful bottle collection to minerals history old tools and a lot of interesting information. The lady at the counter was friendly and very helpful. A must stop if it's on your way. And only $5 ...or less....

Coolgardie Visitors centre is a must stop place as it has an amazing museum of Western Australian history. Beautifully displayed and so much information.

Lovely lady helped at visitors centre with some direction to get my van fixed 😀 🙌 😊 and even lent us a vacum cleaner to do something in our van Always love Coolgardie ❤️
Kerry W — Google review
This museum was alot better then I had originally expected. Coolgardie is a very small goldfields town but has had such a rich history and I learned quite a bit from the experience. The exhibit boasts a few rooms setting as dioramas from the gold rush era. The building itself used to be the old Coolgardie Court House and has its own history. The curator was very friendly and knowledgeable and helpful. If you are touring the goldfields region then I strongly suggest you pay a visit. Adults only $4, seniors and children only $2

Ama  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ You made my day. Thank you. You'll find Ama at the information centre. I was able to ask her so many questions. And she happily answered them all. Q- $2 Token for Hot showers - Showers are one block over from the IGA - Laundromat is right next door to the public showers - Public swimming pool is next door to the showers. - $2 Token can also get you 60lts of drinkable water (This water is available near the FREE RV Campgrounds) Q- Free Camping: Yes it's totally free. it's a large fenced ground half dust and dirt and half lovely mowed green grass. Q - Public Toilets: Yes about 100m from the campground, the toilets are locked automatically at 5.30pm Q - RV dump point: Yes it's also next to the RV Free campground. Q- Free WiFi: Yes it's available in the centre of town ONLY... Q- Food shopping: IGA, it's very Expensive 💲💰💲. But if you really need something, they most probably will have it. Q- Alcohol: Yes, there's a Bottle shop across the road from the IGA. They will ask to scan your iD before selling you alcohol. Q- THERE IS A SMALL charity shop that you can find some very nice and really cheap leather bags and brand name Clothing. It's right beside the information centre. *They will also happily take any donations you no longer need to  carrying in your caravan...!!

Very welcoming, loved the murals around. Loads of local stuff to buy and pamphlets. Great info about traditional owners and history of area inside and out, if you visit when closed. Well presented and absolutely worth a visit 👌

Located in the Woodland Centre. Wi-fi, lots of tourist and Great Western Woodlands information, gifts and art. Walking distance from the RV camp area and close to the camel roundabout.

Can't go wrong at the Norseman visitor centre, as with any of the visitor centres. We rarely miss an opportunity to call into the visitor centres if they're open. They are up to date with all the local knowledge and conditions and point you in the right direction. There are also numerous fantastic attractions within eyesight of the building. Camels, murals, and other crafty bits with a bit of story to them.

This is an incredible visitor's centre. The centre was closing as I arrived. I went to leave when I was welcomed in. As the lovely lady served me with upmost professionalism. I had driven all day. A map was provided and pamphlets with detailed information. Plastic sleeves. My best friend's son was missing. He was laid to rest recently. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. 💜

Information centers
Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Centre is a must-visit in this historic town, offering a wealth of information and assistance for travelers. Housed in the iconic Town Hall, it's the largest tourist information center in the Goldfields region. Here, visitors can book transport, accommodation, and tours while gaining firsthand tips and insights into exploring the area. The staff are known for their helpfulness and love for their town, making it a great place to seek local recommendations.
Blast from the past! The initial separate council of Boulder has a huge amount on display of their past as well as a big war collection which is in the main building. Suggest taking a 2 hour tram/bus ride from the information centre in town of Kalgoorlie. Pre book & buy tickets there...it's 2 hours of basically seeing all you need to learn about these wonderful towns in the area with a knowledgeable driver in Greg!
Ecka H — Google review
Absolute powerhouse of information regarding what to do, what to see and where to go. They will also book tours etc for you and give good advice. Can't go wrong. Had a lot of stuff for purchase as well if you want. Look for Hannans statue and you're basically there. It's also where you go to either start or finish the Nullarbor Links, and get your stamps and certificates. Woohoo. If only I'd played better.😜
Crian M — Google review
A must visit as soon as you hit Kalgoorlie to find out exactly what to see and when to see what's on offer here. A min 5 days to see majority, longer if you want to explore outside of town. Staff are superb and helpful.

specialist knowledge from Marg kept us in town longer. The Nullarbor Links was excellent.

The 60-75 min guided tour of the magnificent Kalgoorlie Town Hall today was excellent and well worth the investment of time. At only $10 pp ($8 for seniors / veterans) the knowledgeable guide provided beginning-to-end history, anecdotes, comprehensive answers to questions in a highly accessible and easily comprehensible format and tone. Well done!
Leanne P — Google review
Asking what’s on in the area. Gave a basic run down. The biggest blast to be done at the super pit happened whilst we were in town and they didn’t say anything about it. Found out after the fact. Over 3000 ppl watch. Very disappointing
Vanessa B — Google review
Attended looking for information on the road between kalgoorlie and Rawlinna. 2 staff both ignored me for 5mins to chat to each other. When I asked they had no idea and couldn't offer any help. Didn't even offer to look anything up for me. Very disappointed in the lack of knowledge of local roads and the ignorance.

Museum of the Goldfields

The Museum of the Goldfields is a must-visit destination, with its prominent Ivanhoe headframe and rich gold-mining heritage. It boasts the largest display of Western Australia's gold bars and nuggets in an underground vault, offering a glimpse into the region's mining tradition. Visitors can step back in time to the Gold Rush era through preserved settings like miners' quarters, offices of entrepreneurs, and a heritage-listed pub.
What a great museum to visit in Kalgoorlie, and it was free, a donation is appreciated though. I think most people head straight to the lift to get a great view of the town from the head frame. Bit cold and windy though, May. Then the Gold Room was my next spot and that was so interesting with a good exhibition of gold (of course) both coins, nuggets and daily use items. Then outside there are exhibits to enjoy including a very narrow pub Lovely visit

It's a very inspiring museum, I was impressed with what they teach, the readings, the photos, it has dazzled me. It's very impressive 👏🏼❤️‍🩹 I added some photos but they don't reflect everything the museum has to do with it, its corridors and its stories.
Millaray A — Google review
A very interesting place to come and check out and have a look. As in the things to see and look at. Especially the view of the town from up top of the platform area. I enjoyed my visit

Great display around the first nations people. I was moved by the Edie Ulrich story, what an amazing artist and story teller. So many aspects on display in this well curated museum. The team managing the display were wonderful to talk and a wealth of knowledge. A must see when going to Kalgoorlie.

Extremely well set up, lots of interesting items and artefacts. Historical details were great. It was so value adding to have a guided tour so check out the times if available, ours was at 10.30am. Our guide was fantastic as was all the the staff there.

Hannans North Tourist Mine

Hannans North Tourist Mine offers an interactive experience for visitors, allowing them to mine their own gold, explore a haul truck, and visit an underground refuge chamber. The site also features period buildings and a recreated 1890s prospectors campsite. Originally a working mine until 1968, the Hainault mine was opened to visitors in 1972 by retired Kalgoorlie miners who conducted underground tours and rock drilling demonstrations.
Yes, an easy 5 stars for Hannans Tourist Mine. Very well done! The ladies were so helpful with enabling my dog to stay in their own kennel area. Shade, bed and water. This gave me good piece of mind. Thank you. The huge displays are great, from the massive trucks, that you can sit in, to the huts that people used to live in. I really enjoyed these. There are toilets around the place which are needed as you’ll spend over an hour here. Then there’s the gold panning and gem streams. I found some nice little pieces of gold but had to get down to the bottom of the ponds to find it. And it’s mucky water! 😂 The shop is great with souvenirs and ice creams available. Well priced too! Well worth the $18 entry and lovely staff, even the young ladies were super helpful and actually cared about their customers, great to see!
Paul S — Google review
This was a great place to learn about the Gold mining history. We loved it, we got to see the trucks they use currently which are huge and also pan for gold which was lots of fun. Great fun places and so much to see.
Tanya L — Google review
A lovely visit to historic open air historic mine museum. Well laid out so we could wander around and look at all the old homes, offices, machinery and facilities of life on the Goldfields. A map was provided so we could take our time to explore. Some of the attractions also had short videos to watch. The best experience was getting up close to the massive trucks that are used at the mines and being able to climb up into them which is something I've always wanted to do. The Chinese Garden of Remembrance , built in recognition of the Chinese miners and other immigrant prospectors who had come to this place was a surprisingly tranquil place in the midst of the mine site. We were not aware of this attraction before coming to Kalgoorlie and only noticed the reference to it at the 'Super Pit' Limit. So definitely a must do if you're out this way.

Loved it. A step back in time to when the region was first opened up by gold mining! This area has an incredible gold mining history. We learned so much about our pioneers of this area including how much-needed water was brought by pipeline from Perth. Definitely worth a visit to learn more.

Absolutely worth the visit!! The collection of machinery and mining huts, gear, drilling, and anything else mining-related that is interesting to learn about can all be found here. We got to watch the gold pour, which was phenomenal! Big shout-out to the volunteers Bill and Ray, who gave an excellent spiel with many facts and figures - thank you so much Bill and Ray 👏👏👏 The Gold panning was also a bit of fun, and the volunteer here was super helpful.

Well worth the visit, well laid out and informative. We spent 4 hours looking around. Also, it has an area to try your luck, gold, or gem panning. Beautiful Chinese garden area to sit and take a break. Staff were just so friendly and helpful.

Well worth a visit! Hannans North Tourist Mine is a great place to spend a few hours if you are interested in the history of the goldfields and gold mining. The centre is very well set up with original buildings and mining equipment from the day used in the displays. The young lady who was on duty today was so informative, knowledgeable and full of passion for her job was just the icing on the cake to a great morning in Kalgoorlie!

Nice stop after finishing The Great Central Road and have a real, good coffee. Shop is very good stocked and ladies are very friendly.

Really nice little museum and gift shop, with an excellent fancy coffee counter. I had a chai tea latte and browsed the fine selection of Len Beadell books while our Troopy, which had broken down on the Gunbarrel Highway, was being repaired by a local mechanic. This visitors' center was a great place to kill some time while we waited!

What a fabulous place to visit. Great coffee and a delicious range of cakes. There are also wonderful gifts and souvenirs available. Prices are very good as well. The staff were very polite, friendly and always smiling each time we visited. I would highly recommend a visit.

2022 update: still the best coffee in Laverton, now with an improved retail area, more seating and a museum/ historic display that is well worth checking out. Best coffee in Laverton. If you have time to stop for a coffee in Laverton, stop here. The Desert Deli doesn’t really do coffee and the BP doesn’t have a proper coffee machine, so the visitor centre is the only business in Laverton that does coffee well.

Great little visitor centre in remote laverton. Great shop full of lovely trinkets, books, maps and sandalwood products. Plus the coffee was good too. Definitely worth a visit
