Food & Drink
Sunshine Brewery in Gisborne has gone above and beyond to support the community by creating a special charity beer called Cyclone Gabri Ale, with proceeds benefiting a good cause. Situated amidst picturesque green hills between Gisborne city and Wainui Beach, this bustling brewery is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. The brewery offers an impressive variety of craft beers, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
I was recommended this beer brewery by a friend and I’m so glad I made it there during my Gisborne visit. Their pizzas were amazing, and who can resist a $20 beer and gourmet pizza deal? Absolute bargain. Would surely revisit when I’m out that way again!
Bettina W — Google review
Enjoyed their friendly service and local drop. The pizza was excellent.
Watchman N — Google review
A very cool spot to have a beer with friends, friendly staff and helpful. I was recommended the Gisborne Gold and/or Green. Both light and refreshing beers, very nice. It's a great place to visit and cool off a hot summer day with a drink before dinner.
Tehaunui — Google review
Great place to visit if in Gisborne, plenty of beers on tap my pick the Pilsners although you can’t really go in and not have a Gisborne Gold! They do some good snack bar food and pizzas butter chicken one was tasty. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere worth a visit.
Simon M — Google review
Great beer, a better selection than expected, good food too.
Automated Z — Google review
Great selection of different beers. They also offer tasting paddles, which I love having at different breweries. The only issue with these tasting paddles is you can't choose any 5 beers, you can only choose a pre-selected selection of 5 beers. It would be much better if you could choose any beers you wanted. They have a good selection of pizzas which are delicious
Jordan S — Google review
Excellent beer, and huge variety, going beyond the usuals (as IPA, APA, lagers and stouts). My favorite is mango and passion fruit sour. Also, the pizza is pretty good. We would only like if they are open a bit later than 8pm, as we like to go out a bit later :)
Staša B — Google review
Amazing beer! We had No access and Superdelic saison and both were fabulous. On Mon-Fri they have lunch pizza combo (small pizza and any drink) from 12-4PM and we had it with peperoni pizza and pizza with chicken and sour cream with sesami seeds and both were above expectations! Really thin crispy crust and with a lot of topping, great deal. We came here at 3 pm after Railbikes tour and we were properly hungry and thisrty and this was just perfect. Recommending both, this cosy Brewery and Railbikes as well. Simply perfect day.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Matawhero, Bushmere Estate is a delightful destination for wine enthusiasts and food lovers alike. This charming estate features an inviting cellar door where visitors can savor a selection of exquisite wines, including Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Montepulciano, and Sangiovese. The Vines restaurant on-site complements these fine wines with a delectable menu that showcases local flavors.
Fabulous, tasty meal and amazing wine tasting. Cellar Master was knowledgeable and engaging. We loved learning more about the wines and stories about the wine making process. It was a lovely relaxing tasting made better with the food. Food was absolutely delicious. The seafood was fresh and tasty. Relaxing meal in a beautiful setting. Entrees about $20, mains $40, wine tasting was $10 (very reasonably priced for the quantity and quality), but we bought six bottles so not charged.
Toni I — Google review
My partner and I went for lunch and a wine tasting. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable about their wine. The service was great and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend the duck, pork belly, and the sticky date pudding!
Jessica D — Google review
Nice lovely place. Welcoming staffs. I don’t drink wine, but those in my team enjoyed wine tasting and ended up buying a Chardonnay. Not in menu, but they made a coffee for my mum 😊. But if you are a vegan, the only item in menu is Canneloni. We were 50% vegan in our team, and had to order two Canneloni coz no option.
Dev M — Google review
Didn’t wine taste, we only sat down for lunch after a rail bike tour. Service was excellent, location - stunning and crucially, the food was delicious. The manager was apologetic that there was a bit of a wait but the wait times were pretty reasonable & the food came out relatively quick. We had the hummus dip with fresh crunchy bread, a cannelloni with creamy ricotta spinach filling and sticky lamb ribs which was finger licking good. Highly recommend.
Sandeep M — Google review
Excellent option. Having lunch by the vineyard is pretty special. We were a group of 10 celebrating the end of the year. They had several groups in different areas, a very busy day. However, the crew managed very well to serve us. We all enjoyed food, beers, wine, an awesome selection of ciders and the atmosphere. Definitely worth it.
Nadia M — Google review
I can't speak highly enough of this place. We did the wine tasting, and had a meal. The Vinyard owner was just so passionate about presenting his wines to us - he had us captivated. We tasted six wines for $7.50 nz per person, which we thought was very reasonable and the food was exceptional.
Neil W — Google review
Absolutely amazing. A fabulous boutique winery. $5 for 5 wines and great hosting with them. Also dined and the food was superb. Desserts devine. A must if in Gisborne.
Michelle A — Google review
Lovely experience. Food was delicious (we had the tandoori chicken and chicken pate). Wonderful wine tasting with the cellar master (and owner) Shona. Wonderful range of wines, we took away a mixed case. Highly recommend, and recommend making a reservation in advance.

Another wine region to consider exploring is the area around Matawhero, which includes Matawhero Wines and Bridge Estate Vineyard. Matawhero Wines offers a charming outdoor dining setting where visitors can sample their wines and enjoy platters. Similarly, Bridge Estate Vineyard, open from Wednesday to Sunday, provides another opportunity to experience the local wines. Additionally, Bushmere Estate in Makaraka offers a more upscale wining and dining experience at their Vines restaurant.
Wrights has a special connection to me as they're Chardonnay was the tipple of choice for our engagement lunch. It's delicious. Love the values and journey of the family and can't wait to go visit the Winery one day!
Katie A — Google review
Beautiful outdoor eating area, although it is right beside the noisy highway. Decent white wines, and great food here, especially the pizzas. Service was friendly and informative regarding the wines.
Scott W — Google review
Wine was good. New staff who did not know the wine, which was odd. Good bread with the wine. Live music was a bonus. The children of the family who owned the winery were ok for me but others were not happy about how boisterous bordering on feral they were.
Michelle A — Google review
Pizza was lovely. Service was friendly, and attentive. Pleasant environment with sunny, shady, and even bean bag seating options... We got a discount from grabone.
Gareth B — Google review
Loved this place once we figured how the "picnic" menu worked. 1. There's a big self-service fridge where you grab Ciabatta, crackers, cheeses, olives, pesto etc. yourself. 2. Prices for the different items are on a black-board by the cabinet (sorry I should have included a photo). 3. Cutlery is also by the cabinet, grab what you want and take it to the cash register. 4. Order a glass of wine, or a taster ($12 - cheap!!) of 4. There was only one red available for tasting when we were there. 5, Take your wine and "picnic" outside to one of the tables, or eat inside, and enjoy! Food was great, wine was yummy, price was good, atmosphere was great. The French staff member was friendly and helpful. The only downside was the noise from the road, and the building and grounds could do with a cobweb/leaf cleanup.
Steve M — Google review
Lovely family run business. Very casual service as kids learn the ropes (part of its uniqueness). Pizzas are amazing, worth the drive! Love the wines and if you're lucky, there's really good live music!
Tracey B — Google review
Fantastic experience. Family friendly. The kids were able to easily play. Gourmet picnics available to build your own. Excellent explanations of wine.

Eastwoodhill National Arboretum of NZ

Arboretum
Nature & Parks
Nestled in New Zealand, Eastwoodhill National Arboretum spans 135 hectares and was established in 1910 by Douglas Cook. The arboretum is dedicated to showcasing a wide variety of plant species that contribute to global ecology and conservation efforts. It also focuses on preserving endangered tree species and conducting educational research. Visitors can explore the diverse collection of exotic and native trees and shrubs, join guided tours, or visit the visitor center.
We walked on almost all the paths all morning. It was beautiful from the moment we arrived and it turned out to be some of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in New Zealand. And this was also the most beautiful arboretum I have ever seen. It was an absolutely fantastic morning, there was no wind and autumn had begun, so some of the trees had such beautiful yellow, golden and red colours at the same time that the grass was completely green and other of the trees were still completely green. Here and there some brightly coloured leaves had fallen down on the path, there were red ripe apples hanging on the trees and there were real chestnuts, horse chestnuts and unusually large acorns on the forest floor. I also saw a very beautiful tree with the largest magnolia fruits I have ever seen. And everywhere there was such a lovely smell of autumn, and I thought about how cozy autumn is.
Katrine C — Google review
Stayed for one night on our bike ride. All the facilities a cyclist needs. Very homely accommodation and amazing food. We couldn't have asked for more. Will definitely be back again. Thank you
Eleanor W — Google review
Terrific combination of beautiful surroundings, extraordinary staff who are committed to helping you, good selection of tracks to hike. Te Ah at reception (I hope I spelled his name correctly) was like a friend trying to ensure I had the best possible visit. I enjoyed plunger coffee and a cheese toasty (with onions) - $5/ea. I can understand where most scenic reserves/conservation areas are free; the idea of paying a fee may be problematic. This is worth your time and money.
David V — Google review
Went to the dog day it was great had a photographer on site took some photos of the dogs looked at them on Facebook had a good afternoon tea it was a good day out.

Great place to spend a day walking and soaking up the huge number of trees and the bird song. Hilly, but good tracks.

Rere Falls

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Waterfalls
Rere Falls, located on the Wharekopae River, is a charming 5-meter high and 20-meter wide waterfall surrounded by picturesque farmland. Visitors can enjoy a large picnic spot and a beautiful swimming hole nearby. Recent rainfall has made the falls spectacular, creating great photo opportunities. However, caution is advised due to submerged tree branches in the water. The area features park benches for relaxation and picnics.
Nothing quite like a wall of water with a light mist to give you perspective on the majesty and magic of nature. Great place to stop for a picnic or just take time to reflect. The sound of the waterfall can be soothing and hypnotic. Great place to stop. Only a few steps from the carpark. Enjoy
David V — Google review
Around 30km from Gisborne. I was lucky to visit this with much water. Small toilet and benches are there.
Malitha B — Google review
Lots of car park available, note that it has one car lane. The waterfall is seen straight away when still driving towards the car park. Easy walk down to the waterfall, it can be muddy. The view is amazing, the waterfall is massive. To get as close as possible to the waterfall will require going through mud and rocks. A table with benches is available if you wish to have a picnic.
Natalia U — Google review
That was amazing experience over there that was the perfect sport to picnic, swim and sliding downs the rock must visit everybody 😀
Sourabh — Google review
As it has been raining a lot lately, the falls were spectacular and we got some great photos. The water was warm, though you need to watch for submerged tree branches when walking out in the water and swimming. At lot of tree debris have been washed down stream during the recent storm's and could do with clearing. There's park benches by the waterfall so a nice place to relax, have a picnic and watch the waterfall.
Chris B — Google review
Well worth a visit. Only 12km further on from Eastwoodhill NZMCA Park which is another great park up.
C D — Google review
It was closed due to the bank side being damaged, so I parked at the entrance on the side of the road. Has a very big car park, toilets, rubbish bin, and table and seating. Waterfall is right at car park, so very little effort to see this spectacular waterfall
Leon K — Google review
Definitely the best stop when in Gisbourne! So much fun to be had. Make sure to bring a body board to slide down the natural slip n slide. Then spend some time at the waterfall, can even walk behind & slide or jump off. Amazing fun for all ages

Rere Rockslides

Geologic Formations
What an awesome natural water slide. Caution is important - it's slippery! I saw people losing their footing as they walked across the stream to get set up for the slide down. Be prepared for your air mattress or boogie board to take an unexpected turn. It's rock that you'll be banging against. And it looked like the people sliding had fun!
David V — Google review
Always been an incredible place with some dark New Zealand history though, but a fun place to go to, just be aware it's a rock slide so be careful cause you can get hurt.
Urban K — Google review
The rock slide is a lovely natural wonder which looks like it would be fun on the right day. The reason for the low rating is re all the untidy Kiwis, there was rubbish all over the place, even in the water, blow up mattresses, tyres, bottles etc. The rubbish bins were overflowing with rubbish on the ground. If you have driven all this way with the food, drink, body boards, mattresses etc, take it all home with you. This was the worst I have ever come across in NZ. Not a good picture.
Darryl S — Google review
There are two car parks, one at top and one at the bottom where the toilet is. There are tables and seating next to the rock slide. It's such an awesome way to cool off on a hot day. I highly recommend doing.
Leon K — Google review
Looks like a great place to have fun sliding down the rock slides. There are warning signs up giving advice and injury is a possibility. We were on our own, so decided it wasn't safe to try, also no mobile phone connection available for emergency. I would definitely recommend a body board or mattress for sliding down. There's a fairly deep pool at the bottom, worth checking out for obstructions hidden under water before sliding (submerged free branches etc).
Chris B — Google review
Such a great day out for everyone. For the adventurous the rockslide is terrific endless fun. You can go again and again. Make sure you bring a body board but if you forget there are some broken ones in the skips. You can also bring smaller children as there is an area suitable for them to play.
Jamie C — Google review
Good fun, best to take an inflatable mattress/ air bed for best use. Body boards are ok. Generally safe, however you can expect a few bruises and bumps if you come off your equipment. Can get busy during peak periods, most people only stay for an hour or two. Toilets available to go to or to get changed in which was a bonus
Matthew H — Google review
A lot of fun if you are adventurous - imagine it would be even better if there had been a good rainfall before. A boogie board with handles would be better and safer than the assortment of yoga mats, etc that we saw

Morere Hot Springs

Mentioned on
3 lists
Thermal baths
Nature & Parks
Morere Hot Springs is a 363-hectare reserve located in a natural bush setting, offering hot and cold pools hidden within native rainforest. Visitors can enjoy a large hot indoor swimming pool, cold outdoor pool, and two hot pools with a cold plunge pool accessible via a 10-minute walk through the bush. The area features stunning Nikau forest and picturesque river crossings, although some paths may be challenging for certain individuals.
I visited Morere Hot Springs at around 11 a.m. on a weekday, traveling approximately 40 minutes from Gisborne. Despite it being a weekday, the place was quite crowded. After paying the entrance fee, we found both a pool area and spa facilities near the entrance. A short 10-minute walk through the forest led us to a secluded spa by the valley. The walk itself was refreshing, with the scent of trees adding to the experience. Although the two small spas there were busy, we joined in and enjoyed relaxing together with others. It was a fantastic experience. We brought a simple packed lunch, which we shared with the kids. Afterward, we played together in the pool area near the entrance, and it was so much fun! There are also barbecue facilities available for a fee of $10. I noticed some visitors had set up tents and were having a barbecue. It seems that day camping is allowed and quite flexible there. Overall, we had a wonderful time at Morere Hot Springs, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable day out with family or friends.
James J — Google review
Absolutely loved the experience here. We went on a week day and practically had the whole place to ourselves. The walk up to the top pools was just fabulous 👌felt like you were in another country (a very tropical feel) well done DoC. The top pools temps were good and the plunge pool was good too! Nice that these pools were tucked away for privacy from tge main pool down bottom. Fantastic and friendly service by Debbie at the office who gives you a thorough run down of the place. Only $20 per adult:-) for as long as you want. Thoroughly recommend stopping if you're popping through this way.
Shona W — Google review
We had a lovely visit to the hot springs. Enjoyed both the inside and outside pools and the lovely reserve.
Sharon J — Google review
Avoid this place if looking for a peaceful and relaxing soak. There's a guy that is frequently there that plays his music loudly through his boom box and also does drumming, all right next to the pools. I spoke to the lady at reception who knows him by name and simply shrugged her shoulders with indifference. Even after I spelt out that paying $20 for a relaxing soak in native bush shouldn't have to put up with that stuff she couldn't have cared less. I won't be back give their couldn't care less attitude.
Glenn M — Google review
What a fantastic experience! Worth it for the walk in the Nikau alone. Lovely natural-feeling hot pool experience for the whole family. Interesting history too. We were so lucky to hit this on the first day open in two years, highly recommended, don't drive past! Check info on Facebook page as Google maps info needs updating. Currently closed Tuesday and Wednesday, open other days 11am-6pm.
Giles L — Google review
Lovely place staff were friendly enjoyed our soak just some points to maybe look at the private pools could do with a clean as there was floating things in the water maybe a scoop or something to add and another thing the women's toilets there's only 2 showers maybe a time limit shower maybe future plans a sign saying please be mindful as I get it there's a door on the showers but nothing in the cubical
Tia R — Google review
Absolutely delightful experience. Made extra special by the lovely Deb and Harmony. Two of the friendliest and sweetest woman you could ever meet.
Peter M — Google review
The most amazing Nikau forest I have seen anywhere in New Zealand. The moss on all the rocks in the river crossings were also absolutely idyllic more so that I have seen elsewhere. The river crossings were an absolute highlight however these were a bit tricky with paths across high cliffs with big drop offs to walk, so certainly not for everyone. As an experienced tramper I had not expected much out of this reserve, but don't let the concrete path for the first five minutes fool you, a very worthwhile experience with a hot dip at the end.

Mangaone Caves Track

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
Hiking Trails
We did it with our 1 and 2 year old. It was steep to begin with, but the 2 year old managed to walk the whole way with just his hand held and tips on where to place his feet. The caves were very muddy once the steps ended.
Emily L — Google review
Lovely walk on the track with good views and the caves was good to have a look.
Chris M — Google review
Awesome! Went on a pretty wet day and didn't have appropriate footwear or a hardhat so we had to abort mission once partly in the cave. Gonna have to go back on a nice day with the right gears and explore.
Logan — Google review
Wonderful walk in, across farmland, first bit is steep, but the remainder of the walk in is easy. The bottom of the main cave can have patches of mud after rain, but I would recommend climbing the ladders and venturing further into the caves (note they stop 100M or so in) Bring a TORCH, and enjoy the caves! The family loved it!
Gregory C — Google review
A steep climb to the top of the hill, then down slightly to get to the cave entrance. I spent 58 minutes here including exploring the caves. There's a staircase to the bottom of the cave, then deep mud halfway to your knees throughout the cave. Please be careful. Cave exploration is dangerous. Don't go too deep.
Brad S — Google review
Nice 30 min walk through astonishing landscape. Be prepared to get muddy in the cave
J J — Google review
Very steep climb up the hill, saw some sheep and tried to not disturb them (lambing season). It was extremely windy, so hats must sit tightly on your head. The main cave is nice but muddy, we wore big hiking boots but still too muddy. Gumboots would have been better. We skipped the first ladder as the entrance to the higher cave did seem slippery and there was a crevasse you could fall into. All in all very nice tour, just be careful of the log trucks coming down the long gravel road (7km). I wouldn't recommend this road to very large campervans, as some parts of the road are quite narrow and you would have to drive backwards quite a bit in the case of a log truck coming.
Jen H — Google review
It's great that the farmer allows us access through his property too experience these caves. They are not huge by any means and saw 3 glow worms. Still I would say it's worth it. Good foot wear and a torch a must

Gaiety Theatre

Movie theater
Fun & Games
Me and my husband have always loved going to the movies. After we had a baby going out seemed just that little bit harder. New years eve we finally built up the courage to go see a film with our 8 month old. Very child friendly. There was an area behind the seating where I could settle my baby to sleep (my daughter is not one to fuss much in public and is rather easy to put to sleep)and continue watching the film. Would definitely go again

One of those places you may not even know exists, popped in and was totally amazed how big inside it was , informative pieces and well kept and maintained. Recommend a visit, and it's donation entry awesome...
David H — Google review
Do NOT miss this museum. It's donation-based and one of the best authentic collections we've seen in our 7 weeks in NZ. Local families donated artwork, artifacts & historical knowledge. The extreme detail to cataloging the items from the early 1900s and late 1800s was impressive, sorted by interest. Iwi Chief from this town signed the original treaty with England & the museum did justice to the sad aftermath of British takeover. A mix of exhibits from Maori portraits & artifacts donared from local families, as well as early English settlers. While we visited, there was also a Bob Marley photogtaph exhibit. Nicely done! Donate as much as you can and go here!!!! (Then stop at Osler's Bakery) A wee local gift boutique is also housed in the museum.

Great visit, our Ancestors Sir James Carroll is along with many others beautifully represented amongst the awesome displays

Tatou Tatou - this little gem is on the main street of Wairoa. Local custodians work with volunteers preserving local history. Stop by and immerse yourself in something money can not buy, but your donations will make a big difference for the preservation of history, Maori tanga, and those generations who contributed to a wonderful town - past and present.

Lots of information about Wairoa history. The interactive section was a favourite of ours. There are about 4 steps to access the museum. Access is by donation. There is plenty of free street parking. Staff were super friendly.

Great and informative service from staff on hand. Best experience for a bit of local history fix.

Excellent opportunity to do some research on History of Tribe and Township Development. Our Museum has a Computer Touch Table linked to nearly every aspect of History, plus all Items contained in the Museum and their background etc! A truly unique educational, easy and fun way of learning! The more you explore the more information it will present to you! Well worth visiting! Staff service is the best you will ever get anywhere!

From the moment I arrived about a week ago, trying to organise my trip back to Auckland a week later, I was very stressed out The staff were absolutely wonderful and handle my situation in a very friendly and professional way. It felt like I was talking to a family member! 10 out of 10 for great service.

We had decided to stop in Wairoa at the last minute and jumped off the bus. This place was very welcoming, helped us get transportation to our motel. Then when we had a 4 hour wait for our bus after checking out, stored our bags and suggested places to go in town. Very friendly and helpful.

Information that was given to us was, get a pie and sit by the river. We queried the waterfalls and the person we spoke to had no knowledge of whether the waterfalls around the areas were swimmable and which were the best spots.

Patient & helpful girl here. She made a phone call for us for accommodation & gave good info. She let us stay inside using wifi right up until she left herself. Lots of brochures & merchandise here plus free wifi.

Lake Waikaremoana, located in the remote wilderness of New Zealand's North Island, offers a backcountry experience amidst lush forests, waterfalls, and stunning lake views. This area is rich in Maori history and is home to a variety of walking tracks, including the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. The trek features some uphill sections but is generally manageable for most hikers. It's recommended to visit during summer when there are more people around and the weather is milder.
Wow, so beautiful. Did the Great Walk for four days. So peaceful and lovely spots to stop and camp or stay in huts.

Love this place. A world away from civilisation. Relaxing or adventure, camping or hiking, swimming, or boating the choices here for a holiday are endless. I've been coming here for over 20 years. My kids have enjoyed many holidays here playing and fishing on the lake. Great for families or even go solo. The hike trails are really well maintained with tramping huts. One of NZs great walks. The views are stunning. Love it

Went for a ride up the Napier Taupo road and just before waipunga falls took a left through the whirinaki forest to minginui then turned right to head to lake waikeremoana absolutely amazing country, native bush as far as you can see . I was expecting old camping grounds but was pleasantly surprised and the nice modern looking facilities . Next time I will stay and have a look around but I had to get back home this day . Great ride

A hidden gem, beautiful Lake tucked deep into the back country. If you don't mind a few corners and dirt roads, check it out. Definitely off the beating track, but has that untouched feel to it.

I'd recommend going during the summer because there will be more people around and because it gets quite cold up there on the winter. The trek is not that hard, it does have some uphill parts that will make you a little tired depending on how heavy your stuff is. Don't forget to bring enough food if you're doing the whole walk, make sure you bring fire sources and a good camping knife. Water and wood are provided at the huts. You'll have beautifull views of the lake, it is worth a visit.

Beautiful Lake and heaps to do in the region. If coming from north the gravel road is intense and takes a good car and experienced driver. Definatley worth it when you get there it is beautiful and serene, the forest and surrounding lakes are also mind blowing. Ultimate place to relaxation and exploring nature at its finest and untouched. The photos form the lake high up are from Loos lookout its a 30 min walk up, and 15 mins down

Waikaremoana is a beautiful place with amazing views of the lake. Natural bush as far as the eyes can see. It has many walkways that are a mixture of easy and med hiking. I would recommend that you visit during summer time as winter can be challenging. With snow and road closures due to road/hill slips. Also if you visit please ensure to keep Te Urewera clean by taking all your rubbish with you when you leave. No electricity, No cell reception, No Gas and No Treated water. You can rent a beaken from the boat transportation service areas. We did trekking during winters and I will recommend you to try it out in Summers orelse trekking would be challenging. We were unable to use the tracks either.

Shine Falls is a stunning waterfall that stands tall at 58m and can be found within a native forest. The area boasts an abundance of birdlife and various looped trails for visitors to explore. Located about 20km inland off SH2, it offers a remote and back-country type environment that is perfect for holiday makers seeking adventure. The car park is spacious enough to accommodate at least 20 cars, making it easy for visitors to access the falls.
Really nice walk despite the hike being closed Almost 2 years since the Storm Gabrielle hit and the path is still.jn pretty bad shape. My sister and I did the walk in the rain which added to the atmosphere. The first 30 min of the walk is fine. Pretty clear, just be careful of your step. You then hit, narrow pathway, and spots where you need to use your hand, ground can be slippery. We made it to the river bank but didn't go all the way to the pool. If you dont mind boulder climbing I'm sure it's doable. Narrow pathways, and vines can make it tough to walk. Ducking and some for of light crawling required. The storm really did a number on the infrastructure and the man made pathway have in part completely collapsed. Overall if you're fit and used to challenging hikes I would recommend. Otherwise enjoy the first 20min with the sheep and the jungle and head back.
Camille B — Google review
The water is absolutely stunning and super safe for walking around. It’s nice and shallow, making it perfect for a refreshing summer swim! 🤩 Getting there is a breeze, so no worries about tough hikes or anything. If you’re looking for a fun spot to chill this summer, I definitely recommend checking it out!
Fai M — Google review
Fairly easy and quick hike with a few washouts on the way, but possible to walk around them, there are clear paths made by other walkers. However, once you reach the stream, then bouldering on slippery rocks or crossing through the stream barefoot is needed to reach the waterfall. I would say definitely worth it if you are willing to do the bouldering/stream crossing to get to the waterfall, but if not, then this hike is not worth it, the view from afar is not very impressive.
Emilija K — Google review
Came here after finishing the waikaremoana great walk - best waterfall I've seen in NZ! The path is a bit dangerous (lots of slips and thorns), you will need to climb over fallen trees. Took 1 hour walk from car. No one there so got to skinny dip :D
Connor B — Google review
A very special place, but I can also see why the track is closed. There are very fresh washouts since the last big rainfalls of winter, gets dangerous and very steep at times so don’t go during or after rainfall and consider taking a PLB with you. Would not recommend to a new hiker.
Reishi O — Google review
Spectacular waterfall that flows over towering sandstone cliffs into a small pool. The track to Shine Falls starts in open grassy farmland that meanders under towering sandstone and limestone cliffs then passes through a patch of native bush in the Boundary Stream Scenic Reserve before arriving at the falls where there is a swimming hole and picnic tables. Stunning spot to go for a walk or even a swim if you are brave.
Anthony C — Google review
An amazing magical place, a relatively easy walk in, allow 30-45 minutes. A little steep in places, so ensure you have good walking footwear. The waterfall is impressive at 58 metres high, the pool is refreshing and safe, however deep around the edges and near and behind the fall. There's sheltered picnic tables at the car park and a long drop toilet (bring toilet paper and hand sanitizer). Also recommend you take your own drinking water and food/snacks and take all your rubbish out with you. The road there once off the highway is mostly gravel and narrow in places. Drive safely and enjoy. No overnight camping allowed.
Mel R — Google review
Wonderful walk in the countryside where you can see limestone and Sandstone cliffs, grazing sheep, bush and waterfalls. While you travel over unsealed road for about 6kms to get there, it is totally worth it. Be wary there may be prickles on the path in places and if its a hot day, take a sunhat and your water bottle

Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park, situated 30 minutes north of Napier in Hawkes Bay, offers a tranquil environment that sets it apart from other family-oriented holiday parks in the region. The campsites and cabins are well-spaced out, and there's a noise curfew enforced by staff after 10 pm. The beach can be rough at times but is patrolled by lifeguards during peak hours, while young children can play safely in the shallow stream nearby.
Beautiful location. Our little family enjoyed spending time here. The weather turned a bit towards end of our trip so we decided to stay in a cabin for one night. The cabin was clean & cosy. The owners very accommodating & lovely. Thank you for your warm hospitality!

Second visit there. Took my grandson for a few days recently. A campsite with simple but sufficient facilities. An absolutely idyllic environment. The team gives you the freedom to feel like you're in your own backyard but are there to assist and respond to any enquiries. Will return again and again. 😊

Fantastic stay here for Christmas. Thank you so much! Shane and Fay are lovely hosts and so hard working, even on Christmas Day! One of the fridges packed up an was replaced within an hour or so on Christmas Day - a testament to how attentive and hardworking they are. We will definitely be back in a hurry. The beach was beautiful and the facilities were awesome and cleaned every day, there was even a bait freezer available for use! Showers were great, $1 for hot as clearly advertised on booking, but we mainly had cold which was good for us in the heat. Thanks again, what a gem of a spot!!

First time staying here and the owners made us feel very welcome. Facilities were cleaned daily and the owners were very onto fixing issues - broken fridge was replaced within an hour, and on Xmas day! Camp store had some good essential items plus the usual treats. Thanks again team, we had an awesome Christmas stay!

Classic kiwi camping ground. Not oversized or overstated. Loads of extra parking as we had 2 vehicals and could use the free space on site to park instead of cramming vehicals onto our tent site. Priced very fair we thought. Good amenities. Great hosts. Kids could simply roam the camp and play without concern which is great for parents. Short 300-400m walk to a great beach and lagoon(lagoon is excellent for smaller children or simply as change from the ocean). Hope to go back next year.
D L — Google review
Great location. Owners are really friendly, even during the very busy times. Facilities are good and clean. Pitches are various sizes, so if you have a big tent or van, check ahead. Christmas and New Year are very popular with regulars, so I suggest you book early and aim for mid Jan. There are some nice short (3-4km) walks with great views close by. The beach is great, but you need to use your brain and stay between the flags so the surf life savers can keep an eye on you.
Neil B — Google review
The place is so BEAUTIFUL! It's private and safe for kids to run freely. The communal facilities and grounds were well kept... Clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and approachable and the locals make you feel very welcomed too! We stayed during wet weather but still managed to have a great time! Would definitely stay again. Thanks guys!!!

Bluff Hill Lookout, once a historic artillery battery site, offers sweeping views of the ocean and Napier City. To reach the lookout, visitors can start from Coote Road near the waterfront and follow signs leading to Priestley Terrace and Lighthouse Road. The steep climb takes you to the World War II Battery site with a commemorative plaque and seating areas for enjoying panoramic views of Napier City and the Port of Napier.
Very nice look out over the bay and the port. The road up is narrow but ok, and it is not a long drive up. There is a carpark at the spot and there is no need walking.

Walked up to bluff hill lookout - mainly road until the last part. About 100m total climb which wasn’t too bad - not many steps. Views are really good nice peaceful at the top sitting on a bench enjoying the sun
Charles P — Google review
I love this place because of the view to the sea. Bluff hill is right on the edge of a cliff, below is the a road and opposite is Napier Port. For me it's beautiful throughout the day, but its more beautiful in early morning or just before sunset. There are benches there and toilets for the public. Some people walk their dogs with leash. Also it has a clear view of ships coming in and out of the port. If you ever come across Napier or just passing through, take a break and visit this place.
Livai ( — Google review
It offers spectacular views over Hawke Bay and Napier Port. The viewing area was constructed over the top of a World War II coastal defence gun emplacement. You can walk up to the top or take the car. Lots of bends and slow driving. It takes about 20 minutes to get there by car. No entry fee. Toilets available. Mostly open area. Parking is not that easy. Beautiful place. Lots to see. Great place for photography. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Popular place, go early to avoid the heat as well.
S V — Google review
Be aware that the Seapoint Road is pretty steep and narrow, so definitely not to recommend for bigger vehicles - take the Thompson Road! But you have a really nice view of the ocean and the area is beautiful designed with flowers and benches to sit 🥰 I personally just didn't like the port in the view...
Daniela C — Google review
Steep drive up but really nice view. Well kept but lots of views seem cut off and fenced off. The drive up is a very narrow street and I dreaded any oncoming traffic on the way up or down

The Bluff Hill Lookout is a great place to go to enjoy the views out across the port and harbour, especially on a sunny day. There is plenty of parking at the top. Also has some nice gardens and a public toilet.

Waipunga Falls is a stunning 40-meter waterfall located in the midst of a verdant rainforest. Surprisingly, it's easily accessible by car, making it a convenient pit stop for travelers driving from Napier to Taupo. The falls offer a picturesque view from a distance, although there's no option to get closer. Despite this limitation, the falls are particularly impressive after periods of heavy rainfall.
Really recommend visiting this falls! It’s very beautiful! It’s a great, free and short activity on the way!
Maurits B — Google review
Very nice site, good road and parking area, the view was majestic! But... There were piles of trash everywhere and broken glass on the footpath, very sad.
Esther F — Google review
Waipunga Falls is a segmented and cascading waterfall, with an approximate height of 40m. The only place to view the waterfalls is from the scenic lookout car park just off the Taupo-Napier main highway, as there is no official track down to the base due to steep cliffs and thick forest cover. The falls are reportedly most impressive in the winter or after heavy rainfall, and can be viewed along with the neighbouring Waiarua Falls, which is partly visible to the left of Waipunga falls. Please note that there are no signboards with the names of the waterfalls, so you need to follow the "Scenic Lookout" sign on the highway. Then in about 200m, you will reach the cul-de-sac car park. Access is easiest when travelling from Taupo to Napier, allowing for a safer pull-off to the left. There used to be a wooden viewing platform next to the car park in 2006, but it had been dismantled when I visited it again in 2025.
Thilal P — Google review
Certainly a very pleasant place to stop on your journey and stretch your legs and enjoy the views and fresh air a great place to stop for a coffee break or just to enjoy.🥰😲❤️❤️❤️

Gorgeous falls. But the growth is getting high and makes them both hard to see. Would be awesome if there was a walkway down even halfway so you’re not just looking down and trying to see through overgrown growth. Just needs a little love.

MTG Hawke's Bay, short for Museum, Theater, and Gallery, is a cultural complex that offers a rich blend of fine and applied arts as well as historical artifacts. Boasting an extensive inventory of 90,000 items, the museum showcases a diverse range of objects with captivating stories. went to the museum last Saturday 25th Oct 2025, the staff was very friendly, i bought some Napier postcards from there. The museum has 3 floors and one of them is dedicated to the Napier earthquake back in 1931. It was surreal and very touching to see and read those history. Should pop at this museum when you have time in Napier!

MTG Hawke's Bay is a great place to learn about the art and culture of the Hawke's Bay region and beyond. The museum houses a diverse collection of art, including Māori treasures, contemporary works, and historical artifacts from Napier's Earthquake. The Māori collection is particularly impressive, featuring intricate carvings, textiles, and weapons. The museum also has a dedicated Māori gallery, which provides visitors with a deeper understanding of Māori culture and history. Overall, MTG Hawke's Bay is a well-curated and informative museum, however the ladies working there were surprisingly very unkind, which sadly downgraded the experience.

Situated near the beach in town, it offers information on various activities and has a souvenir shop. The friendly staff can provide directions, book tours last minute, and offer free maps and advice on cycling, wineries, or exploring the art deco historic center.
I'm happy to report that Peter at this isite center was simply amazing with the depth and breadth of info he shared. I now know, through his words and photographs, the devastation and geographical changes from the February 3, 1931 earthquake. Art Deco in the rebuilding is a lasting legacy. Peter also helped to map out what I think is a full day's itinerary! The isite staff are the best! Thank you!

The National Aquarium of New Zealand, located in Napier, is a fascinating destination showcasing a diverse range of marine and land animals. The Oceanarium, with 1.5 million liters of water, offers an immersive experience where visitors can observe shark species, stingrays, reef fish, tropical fish, turtles, and octopi. Additionally, the aquarium features penguin enclosures housing little blue penguins and dedicated spaces for iconic New Zealand creatures like kiwis and tuataras.
Love this place! Some awesome specimens of fish. Got to watch the penguin feeding and later the big fish feeding. Great way to enjoy a few hours. They also have kiwis
Tony J — Google review
A very well kept and satisfying place to visit. Always love seeing fish in their natural habitat, plenty of fresh water and salt water aquariums. A wide variety of areas to go, easily walkable, cafe and gift shop there as well. Was surprised there were no sharks in the tunnel area though. Still plenty of different species of fish, turtles, stingrays, crayfish, penguins, frogs, lizards, etc. The turtle was very big, did keep bumping his nose on the glass though. Otherwise the turtle seemed okay.
Brodie B — Google review
Loved the experience! We were able to see the penguin being fed and fishes being fed by divers. It was a small aquarium and not complete. We were expecting octopus, squid or baby sharks but maybe the ecosystem of the water is not suitable for those. I'm prolly just dreaming. Lol. But I was happy with the stingrays! Too bad we were not able to see kiwis 😭
Katherine H — Google review
Exceptional visit here as we booked very early in advance to do the penguin feeding which is limited to a group of 4 a day only. Staff at penguin feeding were very informative and friendly and great hosts to help us feed the penguins. Penguins were our favourite exhibition. The big turtle was great. Kiwi Exhibition was great to see them walking around active. 2pm feeding time in the big tank was also a great watch especially the stingrays.
Travis M — Google review
A nice little experience. We even watched the penguin feeding. It is all more personal in this smaller aquarium. Everything is really clean and you get to see a lot of sea animals, reptils and even Kiwis! One of our favourite experiences was the aquarium tunnel you can walk trough! Loved it!
Gerald S — Google review
A very well maintained aquarium near to Napier CBD, there are some shows for the audience which is great to watch and the one for penguin feeding was very informative. Kids love it and will be revising in the future...
Indrajit N — Google review
Aquarium is tidy, love the turtles! The large turtle would be cool in the big enclosure so you could follow him around but I'm sure he's not for a reason.. probably would eat all the fish! Lady on the front with the stunning red hair was great today, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Customer service like that is hard to come by these days! So cheers! Sorry I didn't get your name!
Victoria — Google review
Very kid friendly and has wheelchair access. However, the value for money is quite $$ for a short encounter with the sea animals. Although, we had the chance to watch the staff feed them. It was still a good experience 😊

Cape Kidnappers, perched on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, is a stunning headland steeped in history and natural beauty. Named after an incident involving Captain Cook and local Maori, this breathtaking destination boasts dramatic cliffs that are home to the largest mainland gannet colony globally. Visitors can explore scenic hiking trails that wind along these impressive cliffs or enjoy eco-tours for an up-close experience with the gannets in their natural habitat.
A remarkable place to visit around the beach. A number of holiday parks available. Beach is clean for a swim however tides can be heavy.
Hash K — Google review
It's such a shame that the New Zealand government allows the privatization of land around some natural beauty. The free trail is along the beach, but you have to calculate the tide times because it takes a total of 5 hours to go and come back and the tide has to be low to be able to complete the entire trail. There is no longer the option of going over the top, because it is now private land and you have to pay 100 dollars for a tour to see the birds. It's better to see the gannets for free at Muriwai Beach in Auckland, don't sponsor tours like that.
Julia L — Google review
Very disappointed, Google maps takes you to a private property. But drive further to a Cafe/small parking area before the campsite. And if you are fit and The tides out you have 2.5 hours to get to the cliffs and see the birds. And then get back... 5 hours apparently so dilly-dallying to check out the place. Such a shame $100 each doe a tour is way out our and many kiwi's budget.
Kat S — Google review
Very disappointed, it's private property and you can't just enter unfortunately You have to book. Not recommended!
Marty H — Google review
Even if you don’t go all the way to the bird colony at the end, it’s a stunning walk along the beach. Towering cliffs overhead. Beautiful geography. An easy to navigate beach walk, though pay attention to tides. There are some inlets to explore that look like they fill with water when it rains. But don’t expect to be able to climb up to the top of the cliff face anywhere easily. There is parking at the end of the road, then walking through a trailer park at the beginning of the beach. Great views. Highly recommend this hike.
Kevin M — Google review
The view is absolutely stunning! Remember to check the tide before you go. You can call to the office and they will tell you the exact time to start / end the walk. Whole walk is about 16km (6hrs - 7hrs). There is a only toilet before you started to hike up the bluff to the Gannet Colony.
Rui R — Google review
Nice scenic area and the Gannett colony you get very close to the birds its a 9 km hike along beach each way or pay 60 to ride on a tractor trailer with seats to get there
Laurie H — Google review
Did the tractor trip out along the beach and walked up to see gannets. Excellent day out. Fantastic views. Take warm jacket, good walking shoes and packed lunch!

Mission Estate Winery

Winery
Mission Estate Winery, established in 1851, is the oldest winery in New Zealand and offers a rich history of winemaking. Located in the Taradale hills, it provides tastings, beautiful gardens, a restaurant with a modern and luxurious ambiance, and hosts outdoor concerts. The estate also features The Farmhouse at Mission Estate, an elegant three-bedroom holiday home set within its private vineyards and manicured grounds.
The most beautiful winery we’ve visited in Hawke’s Bay. We had 2 wine tastings, the white and the aromatic flights. $15/per person which was a steal because we spent nearly 2 hours there (and they over pour). I highly recommend the “2023 Mission Estate Hawke’s Bay Riesling” which is part of the aromatic flights. It’s a nice place to take your time to write down what you think of each wine and talk over some tipsy day drinking. The tastings themselves were all hitters. I personally would have bought a bottle myself because they were delicious and reasonably priced at around $18/ bottle. But I’m no wine snob, I just thought the views were pretty nice. The drive in features old well maintained trees and a beautiful landscape to drink in front of. Go on a nice sunny day and get yourself pretty because you will want to take lots of pictures. Well done
Small B — Google review
We visited for a wine tasting on Thursday and were presented with four different types to choose from. I selected one to start with, and after tasting it, I wanted to try another. Unfortunately, I was told that only one type is allowed per tasting session, and if I wanted to try more, I’d have to go into the restaurant and order a glass. Since my companion was tied up with a long online meeting, I had to give up on the idea. The setting was beautiful and the pricing very reasonable, but the inflexible policy was a bit disappointing.
Nicole C — Google review
We got to see The Mission cellar door while we were visiting friends who had just moved to Napier, as part of a wine tour with Frankly Tours (see other review). We did the tour on a Sunday, hoping that the cellar doors would be open, and we were not disappointed. The Mission was our first stop, and what a starter! Fantastic venue and atmosphere, just stunning on the hill. 5 wines tasted from their extensive range, starting with their bubbles. We were given plenty of time to browse the historic photos and artifacts after the wine tasting session. Tour guide was the most knowledgeable of the 3 by far that we met on the day tour, and I think we chatted so much with Q&A that we kind of ran out of time. Absolutely no pressure to buy any of the wines, and indeed we were back on our tour bus before we realised we had not had the chance to purchase LOL. Beyond the wine production the venue and location itself is obviously a major part of their business set up, simple stunning. Recommend you ask for this "cellar door" specifically on any wine tour in Napier.
Stuart G — Google review
Beautiful spot, great wines and wonderful history made for a stunning start to our wine discovery. Self guided tasting so you do not feel rushed but stuff there to help out if and when needed. When back for seconds. Also we'll priced celler door wines for sale.

Magic place with incredibly tasty wine, we loved our stop at Mission Estate. Our server was very nice. We went for the aromatic self guided tasting and what a blast ! We ended up by buying four bottles. You should really include Mission Estate in your winery tour !

Well worth the detour. We did some tasting followed by a cheese platter. Yvonne was warm and super knowledgeable - not only about the wine and heritage but also the region. Highly recommended!
Liz L — Google review
Lovely food and staff. Would have been 5 star but a bit odd in their rules on one paddle per person seeing the amount of wine choice’s and how much time and money we spent in the restaurant. The “can’t be in the grass” with the tasting paddle also very odd and comes across as uninviting. They were reasonable at accommodating to food intolerances.

I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for the exceptional dining experience at Mission Winery Restaurant. From the moment I stepped in, I was captivated by the ambiance and warmth of the place. However, what truly stole the show was the extraordinary culinary journey orchestrated by the talented chef. The steaks, in particular, were a revelation. Cooked to a perfect medium rare, each bite was a symphony of flavors and textures, a testament to the chef's mastery in the kitchen. It's not an exaggeration to say that it was one of the best steak experiences I've ever had.The attention to detail and dedication to quality were evident in every dish served. Beyond the remarkable food, the service was impeccable, adding to the overall charm of the evening.I am genuinely grateful for the memorable dining experience at Mission Winery Restaurant and eagerly look forward to returning to savor more of the culinary delights crafted with such care and passion.

I had an unforgettable experience at the winery, thanks to two amazing people who truly made my visit special. First, Michael — what an incredible tour guide! He gave me a fantastic tour of the winery followed by a wine tasting that I’ll never forget. He’s extremely knowledgeable, passionate about what he does, and made the whole experience engaging and fun. You can tell he really knows his stuff. Then at the restaurant, I was lucky to be served by Samantha. She was absolutely lovely — warm, attentive, and professional. Her service was impeccable from start to finish, and she added such a personal touch that made the meal even more enjoyable. All in all, an amazing visit thanks to the wonderful team. Highly recommended!

We’ve visited quite a few vineyards, but the giants estate wine tasting experience at Craggy Range with Damian was easily the best wine experience we’ve ever had. His passion and storytelling brought the wines to life.. the way he shared the stories made the whole tasting unforgettable. It wasn’t just about the wine, it was about feeling connected to the vineyard and its craft. Dinner at the restaurant was equally impressive. The plating was beautiful, and the dishes were cooked to absolute perfection. The venison tartare and the duck breast were standouts.. truly truly sublime. Craggy Range has completely raised the bar for us. An unforgettable wine and dining experience that we’d recommend to anyone.

we had the winter Italian menu. It was incredible and good value! The service was the hilight of the night. The girl served us is friendly and funny. She gave me a box of chocolate truffles as to make up for put in my oyster order late. The Earl Grey was very nice. I asked what tea they use but then I forgot. :(

Absolutely beautiful. Staff excellent, restaurant world-class, vineyards and grounds meticulously presented. We stayed in a 2-bed cabin & even the design of the cabin, complementary bottle of Craggy Range wine, and daily generous stocking of breakfast supplies were a great experience. Loved Craggy Range!

Grand feast in Paradise! It’s like scenic beauty which has been painted with a brush by God himself and within this scenic wonder lay a nice restaurant almost as beautiful! And the food and wine... Splendid! I ordered the shared menu starting with the Venison tartare followed by the raw local fish, marinated octopus, roasted hohepa halloumi and roasted crispy duck. All of this was very well presented like you expect in a top tier restaurant and tasted superb. I ordered the Graham's 40 year old Tawny Port which cost $50 for just 60 ml glass. But once again the best port wine I have ever had! The main course had lamb shoulder which was beautifully cooked and the meat just fell of the bone! Perfect! And this was followed by the best dish and one of the best desserts which I have ever had! The Spring Pavlova was start to finish full of flavor! You could actually taste at least 4 different flavors in every morsel which and they complimented each other to perfection! From the presentation, taste to the service, everything was absolute highest quality you could ever find anywhere in this world! It was a bit costly but worth every penny! Can't thank my brother and his wife for treating me to this divine feast right in the middle of paradise! Next time... my turn!

We absolutely have to stop by Craggy Range whenever we're in Napier — it's a must. The accommodations are always amazing, the food is delicious, and the wine pairings are absolutely outstanding. This time, we visited specifically to check out the new restaurant. While it wasn’t open yet, we were still impressed by the stunning decor, inviting ambiance, and unbeatable location. We'll definitely be back soon to experience it properly — can't wait!

We had a great meal at the restaurant. Food was brilliant, atmosphere brilliant, service brilliant.and professional But the thing that made it even better was the friendly nature of the staff who served us. They took the day to another level.

Craggy Range is simply breathtaking – the setting alone makes it worth a visit, with stunning views that create such a special atmosphere. The food was excellent and beautifully presented, and the staff were absolutely wonderful – attentive, warm, and welcoming from start to finish. The wine list is exceptional, with a beautiful selection that showcases the best of the region, and the cocktails were just as impressive. Craggy Range is a must-visit in Hawke’s Bay – an unforgettable combination of scenery, food, wine, and hospitality.

Maraetotara Falls in Hawkes Bay is a majestic 2-step waterfall with a strong water flow, making it a beautiful sight even in mid-summer. The water is clean and clear, creating a safe and wide waterhole for swimming. Visitors can enjoy jumping from rocks into the pool below or using the rope swing. The area also features convenient facilities such as car parks and toilets.
Maraetotara Falls is an absolute gem – stunning scenery, crystal-clear water, and such a peaceful spot to reconnect with nature. It’s not super well signposted, so take your time – the best access point is the third clearing, where a short track leads you straight to the falls. Definitely worth the extra few minutes to find it! The water is beautiful and refreshing – perfect for a swim. There are a couple of great jumping spots if you’re up for it, though it’s definitely at your own risk, so take extra care if you’ve got young kids with you. The track down is short and manageable but can get slippery when wet, so good footwear is a must. Sadly, I did notice some rubbish left behind – I picked up what I could and binned it properly. Places like this deserve to be cherished and respected. I imagine in summer it turns into a hot hive of activity – but even in the off-season, it’s well worth the visit. A real Hawke’s Bay treasure.

we decided to start from the lower/first car park beside the toilet and it was awesome 😍 the nature is beautiful on a nice day - everything so green and the path goes beside the river with extremely clear water ✨️ and after a few minutes you arrive at the falls that look like a photo setup 😊

35 minutes drive from Napier and 20 minutes from Hastings. 5 minutes walk from car park to the waterfall. Water was little bit cold, but there were plenty of people who swam. Recommend this place to those who are nearby. We didn't see anybody who tried that famous rope.

What a lovely experience we had today at Trinity Hill Winery. We had family staying with us for the weekend, and Trinity Hill was the first winery we visited. We were attentively looked after by Chris and Brooklyn, we ordered some flights and a cheese board platter which included local cheeses, our experience was enhanced so much more by our hosts, who’s knowledge of their wines was shared and much appreciated. We would highly recommend a visit to any one visiting Hawke’s Bay.

Nice place to visit; probably one of the best wine tasting experience in Hawkes Bay. A large vineyard and a large seating space outdoors. We went for wine tasting and the whole paddle was served at once. Amazing garlic bread as well. For non-wine drinkers, they have a few options of pale ale and non alcoholic ones.

We got to visit Trinity Hills Cellar Door while we were visiting friends who had just moved to Napier, as part of a wine tour with Frankly Tours (see other review). We did the tour on a Sunday, hoping that the cellar doors would be open, and we were not disappointed. Trinity Hills was our 2nd stop and a very different feel and flavour from The Mission where we went first. A modern take on wine production was highlighted here with the gravel grown wines being their USP. The building itself is an architectural wonder of a beast, and the fell of the place a lot more industrial and 'in production'. The young wine tour guide was (by his own admission) quite new to the game, but his knowledge was very capable for our levels and tases and very entertaining. 7 wines tasted from 3 3 ranges of wines range, starting with lighter whites and finishing with reds. These were chosen based on our preferences during our chat and not a 'set menu' as we have seen with other places. Purchasing here was very low-key, but simple as retails is set up where you can just pick up bottles from the shelves in the room, all clearly marked and priced. The venue itself is setup as a cafe bistro with quite an extensive menu which we didn't try on this tour), so i could see this being a good weekend afternoon lunch/wine spot with friends on our next visit.

If you're in the Hawkes Bay or just travelling through the Trinity Hill winery is a must visit. We loved the hospitable and informative staff, the superb wine tasting options, delicious platters (we had the Terrine board, perfect for two, be fine for three). The couches are super lush and comfortable if you're lucky enough to get them! If you buy a bottle of wine the tasting becomes free - can't get a better deal than this! Would definitely recommend as a winery worth checking out. Wheelchair and dog friendly.

On arrival at Trinity Hill wines we were immediately set at ease as Chris and his team made light of our unfamiliarity with there tasting system. From then on he looked after us as if we were the only people there, we weren't and he regularly checked up on all the other punters very professional. He quickly assessed my wine experience and tailored the wine tasting to reflect that. Chris is very knowledgeable about his wines, experienced in the wine industry generally and easy to get along with. I had great time and thoroughly recommend going for a tasting at Trinity Hills winery Cheers Andrew Gradisen

Off the beaten track and our favourite winery of the day! Tony is so knowledgeable about his wines and passionate about how he’s made them. The wines themselves were fantastic - both different from a lot of what you get in the area, and some great European varietals that were a real treat. Perfect ambience.

What a great experience. We stumbled upon this winery and it is totally worth it, better than other wineries we visited in the area for the ambiance alone. It was a rainy day and the place felt like home. It was cared for and intentional. The welcome committee is featured in a Wine dogs of New Zealand book. ❤️

Our last visit to this winery was about 8 years ago so we were keen to see their progress over that interval and travelled up there on the Sunday of Labour Weekend 2025. We were well pleased with that decision. Enjoyed a very interesting tasting of some quite different wines and came away with a box of 6. Tony is an excellent host and very passionate about his craft. You learn lots of new stuff. He is also a very creative artist in sculptures. The gardens contain some stunning works, notably the Haast Eagle, the Trout Fly and a representation of R2-D2 from Star Wars ( I think ). We also shared a small pizza for our lunch. If you are thinking about going somewhere innovative, different and very interesting you will not be disappointed in a decision to visit here. Cheers,

Being recommended by other members of the wine industry to visit De La Terre, despite the beautiful location and pleasant wines, the owner was rude and disrespectful. Prompting our group to hurry with our choices of what to taste as he felt there were more important groups coming. For a $15 tasting the pours were miniscule where you could barely get 3 small sips from the glass. We were really looking forward to a tasting from a cellar door run by the wine maker but to be treated so poorly, I wouldnt recommend this vineyard to others.

Occasionally an experience simply makes you smile; de la terre winery did this for us! The grounds are beautiful with every element obviously meticulous crafted and currated, the menu was simple in a yummy way, the wine was clearly a labour of love and the tasting experience informative in an easy unpretentious way. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and now torn between telling everyone how great it was and trying to keep the secret.
Hayley B — Google review
This is an outstanding winery to visit. We spent a very enjoyable hour or so speaking with the winemaker who very generously and patiently described how he makes some outstanding wine. The passion and knowledge was clear to see and appreciated. The wines were amazing anyway but tasted that bit better with that little bit of knowledge. We didn't try the food but delicious aromas made us regret that as we left. You need to try the reserve Tannat, just one out of several interesting varietals that are sensational.

Beautiful tasty little pizzas with a lovely side salad. A terrific wine tasting lineup where you get to pick your 5. Such an impressive winery, an array of unusual varieties and very high quality. A beautiful outdoor setting with plenty of seats and umbrellas. Perfect for the family and dogs. Kids are kept busy with the playground, trampoline, rugby balls, cricket and general area to run about! Adults can enjoy the beers, cider and non alcoholic drinks. Beautifully made pizza and platters to be enjoyed! A great place to chill out in the sun!

We were 3 campers and 5 people to stay for the afternoon and Sunday nite. Great wines beers and pizzas . Music/ ambience lovely. We had no kids but enjoyed watching the kids and big kids play the games and have lots of fun Highly recommend.

GodsOwn Brewery is a little out of the way, but well worth the effort. From outstanding beer made by owner Godfrey (see what he did with the brewery name there?) to delicious and quirky pizzas (the one with roasted beetroot is my favourite) this is truly a unique beer destination. The whole vibe of the place is summed up in that it is based around several caravans, a glamping style tent. It has the large frames and wires for growing hops. It is as if someone just built everything that seemed like a good idea. Does it look like a cohesive whole? Not really. But that is part of it’s glorious charm. The rural setting, the outdoor and covered (if it rains) seating, the play area for little children mean there’s something for everyone. Be sure you bring a container for take-home brew. Highly recommended.

Absolutely amazing place. Came here for a family lunch at 12 pm on a Sunday. The scenery and vibes are absolutely beautiful. Food is top notch and the service and owner is unreal. Will definitely be coming back here when I travel over from Australia again!

Great brewery! I highly recommend spending an entire afternoon here. The beer was amazing. Good place for kids. A little pricey for food and for tasting tray was kind of average-expensive as well. It’s a beautiful property. Only reason I gave a four not a five was because our pizza took over an hour and we had to keep checking on it because we had to go (luckily they did give us a discount on it because it took so long).

Decided to go for a drive and discovered this place. Super friendly hosts, brilliant beers (had more than intended)and great food. Home made crackers (made from used barley and grain from brewing process)and dip.Pizza to die for. Good location. Kid friendly. Will definately be back. Thought prices very reasonable for both drinks and food.

GodsOwn Brewery offers an array of beers and wood-fired pizzas. When we visited, it took a while for our food orders to be served, regardless, we devoured our pizzas in a snap. We highly recommend the adobo beef pizza. The brewery is a perfect place to lounge especially during summer time because of the outdoor set-up.

Discovered this place through word of mouth and it was not a let down. This is a beautiful spot just outside Hastings that’s perfect for a drink on a nice day. Went here with the intention of sampling a few beers but made the mistake of starting on the stout. Once I tried that I couldn’t change to another this just forces me to go for another visit. Pizzas are pretty tasty as well. Well worth a visit.
