Outdoor Activities
Titirangi Reserve, situated in Gisborne, New Zealand, is a nature lover's paradise with a variety of attractions for visitors of all ages. The reserve offers stunning panoramic views of the region's land, coast, and sea from its high vantage point. Visitors can reach the reserve via Queens Dr or take the steep track from Puhi Kai for an adventurous journey.
Great view of the Bay and the highest vantage point near town. Challenge yourself to walk the loop, but you can drive up here, which is somewhat special these days as more as more summits have been closed to vehicle traffic over the decades. One way traffic only, and a dedicated path for walkers and cyclists. There are a number of waking tracks that come off the main road as well. On a good day, a brilliant place for a picnic, and good days are easy to come by around here.

Super view from top mountain. The whole city view looks stunning from Titirangi Reserve
Bhumi P — Google review
Absolutely stunning views on a bootiful Autumn day
Karen M — Google review
Great walk, not too long but not too short either. Stairs were a killer but a great challenge if you're not as unfit as me probably! There are alternative routes that gradually slope up if you prefer an easier path. Great views at the top!
C F — Google review
Great place to watch the sunset or just go during the day to watch over town. The walk up is relatively easy but requires walking up multiple stairs. The view is really beautiful and it's also a good spot for a picnic. There is a children playground and some exercices accessories.
Charlotte L — Google review
Great exercise area. Excellent views. Fantastic blend of trees, paths and shared Roadway. Need to respect shared roadway as traffic accelerates up the hill. Few Japanese climber weeds agmonst trees, posing as a threat.
R C — Google review
Great view of gisborne at its entirety. Easy access to drive up. As long as drunken teens dont ruin it.

A lovely scenic drive with beautiful picnic spots and walks along the way. Once at the top you are gifted with stunning panoramic views of the regions land, coast & sea

Visitors can enjoy tailored and guided wine tastings by appointment or simply relax with a glass of their favorite varietal alongside lunch or dinner. Great spot for lunch. Nice selection of dishes of generous size. Staff were attentive. Location is good for parking and atmosphere. Worth stepping away from the city for a wander to the port side for this little treat. Great selection of wines and drinks round this off.
Chris E — Google review
A real lovely place to taste new Zealand wine, with view on the harbour, have little things to eat with it, with a staff very attentive ! I recommend !
A C — Google review
The name sounds a bit like a shop than a wine bar or restaurant. Nice hidden joint close to the water. Good selection of wines and small bites. Tried the bruschetta, as we weren't as hungry. Big portion and really nice flavours.
Linda A — Google review
This place was referred to us from a local in Rotorua. Very dissapointed as what is offered for tasting is very limited and the consumer has no choice other than not to taste at all. This is a restaurant that is trying to offer wine tasting for the region but fails to offer the region's wines to taste. The cheese platter we had was tasty though. If you're looking to taste wines from the Gisborne region this is not the place to visit.
Stephen P — Google review
Great spot for an after work drink while enjoying the sunset 🍷 great selection of wines from around New Zealand. Indoor/Outdoor seating that looks over the water.

My two Children and Myself went here for lunch, we all enjoyed the food, which was very delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we will be back. I highly recommend The Gisborne Wine Centre which also has a nive setting overlooking the harbour
OhAdamm R — Google review
This is a fabulous place to enjoy tasting wine overlooking the harbor. You can order a tasting flight of either red or white wines, which will be brought to your table. We highly recommend ordering one of their appetizer platters to accompany our wine. Visiting here was one of our favorite Gisborne experiences!
Rich W — Google review
Lovely time tonight - had the chance to watch the stingrays in the harbour before a fantastic wine and pud at the wine centre. Girls went out of their way to make sure we had the right wine for our personal tastes and the atmosphere was lovely. Thankyou!

Fabulous museum and art gallery. Free for residents and $5 for visitors. Changing exhibitions and greatocal historical items. Loved the inclusion of local artists mad ideas. A must see if visiting Gisborne.

$5 for non-locals, good value. Exhibits good quality and interesting. Learned a bit more to complement our trip up highway 35 the day before. The cafe was closed the day we visited, otherwise might have spent a bit more time and money there.
Michael L — Google review
Love this museum, so if you're visiting Gisborne definitely go see everything. There's something for everyone, including artifacts, art, Maori history, local exhibitions, surfboard history and a cafe/gift shop. Also worth exploring is the Captain's cabin from the sunken The Star of Canada ship from 1912 plus an old colonial house next door. The museum is just across the river from the central city, so easily within walking distance and well worth the effort. Free entry too 😊

Always nice to be back in town to see this place. Nice pieces of local history to soak in and some of the memories from when I was a child.
Alex A — Google review
Very interesting museum, art gallery, especially liked the old boat that is incorporated into the building. We really enjoyed our visit and would thoroughly recommend it.
Lori T — Google review
Tiny museum. Shares some history of the place and its people. Has parts of a historic ship which you can walk into. Something you can visit once and that's it.
KSH — Google review
Excellent C company display (Maori batallion) adjoins the museum, which is free. Museum itself is a great place to visit, excellent and timely displays on the history of Aotearoa / NZ. Only major drag was an internal sliding door toward the back which screeched on opening, it just lowered the mood of the place, just remove the bloody thing! Otherwise, Ka pai.

Sunshine Brewery in Gisborne has gone above and beyond to support the community by creating a special charity beer called Cyclone Gabri Ale, with proceeds benefiting a good cause. Situated amidst picturesque green hills between Gisborne city and Wainui Beach, this bustling brewery is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. The brewery offers an impressive variety of craft beers, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
I was recommended this beer brewery by a friend and I’m so glad I made it there during my Gisborne visit. Their pizzas were amazing, and who can resist a $20 beer and gourmet pizza deal? Absolute bargain. Would surely revisit when I’m out that way again!
Bettina W — Google review
Enjoyed their friendly service and local drop. The pizza was excellent.

A very cool spot to have a beer with friends, friendly staff and helpful. I was recommended the Gisborne Gold and/or Green. Both light and refreshing beers, very nice. It's a great place to visit and cool off a hot summer day with a drink before dinner.
Tehaunui — Google review
Great place to visit if in Gisborne, plenty of beers on tap my pick the Pilsners although you can’t really go in and not have a Gisborne Gold! They do some good snack bar food and pizzas butter chicken one was tasty. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere worth a visit.
Simon M — Google review
Great beer, a better selection than expected, good food too.
Automated Z — Google review
Great selection of different beers. They also offer tasting paddles, which I love having at different breweries. The only issue with these tasting paddles is you can't choose any 5 beers, you can only choose a pre-selected selection of 5 beers. It would be much better if you could choose any beers you wanted. They have a good selection of pizzas which are delicious
Jordan S — Google review
Excellent beer, and huge variety, going beyond the usuals (as IPA, APA, lagers and stouts). My favorite is mango and passion fruit sour. Also, the pizza is pretty good. We would only like if they are open a bit later than 8pm, as we like to go out a bit later :)
Staša B — Google review
Amazing beer! We had No access and Superdelic saison and both were fabulous. On Mon-Fri they have lunch pizza combo (small pizza and any drink) from 12-4PM and we had it with peperoni pizza and pizza with chicken and sour cream with sesami seeds and both were above expectations! Really thin crispy crust and with a lot of topping, great deal. We came here at 3 pm after Railbikes tour and we were properly hungry and thisrty and this was just perfect. Recommending both, this cosy Brewery and Railbikes as well. Simply perfect day.

East Coast Museum of Technology

Museum
Specialty Museums
The East Coast Museum of Technology is a delightful destination for families and tech enthusiasts alike, showcasing an impressive collection of vintage technology across various buildings. Visitors can explore fascinating displays, including automobiles and farming equipment, with a smaller yet intriguing military section. It's the perfect spot to reminisce about the past while sharing stories with loved ones—especially parents who may recall their own childhood experiences. The museum's curator adds depth to the visit by providing local insights that bring each exhibit to life.
As you would imagine from the name of the business, there is plenty of vintage technology on display, grouped into different buildings so you can locate what you fancy. I particularly enjoyed the military section, though that makes up a relatively small section of the displays as opposed to the automobile and farming displays. Great for an hour or two with the family to enjoy our rich heritage. Do note that there are lots greasy items and sharp and/or rusty metal, so do be vigilant with your children. Ultimately a great experience and very much enjoyed.
Aiden R — Google review
We visited the museum on Easter Sunday, and it was a truly pleasant experience. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful—perfect for a relaxing outing with family and friends. I noticed many parents bringing their children along, sharing stories and experiences with them, which added a lovely, heartwarming touch to the visit. It's definitely a place worth exploring with your loved ones.
Maheesha D — Google review
Grab your parents and enjoy a trip down memory lane with them. I learned so mu h sharing this place with my dad as he recounted his memories or those of his parents and grandparents. Such a young history yet so vibrant!! Rob the curator was fantastic adding local knowledge to bring the buildings to life as he filled us in on their lifespan. Only 10 each and over two hours spent here. Enjoy!!

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Matawhero, Bushmere Estate is a delightful destination for wine enthusiasts and food lovers alike. This charming estate features an inviting cellar door where visitors can savor a selection of exquisite wines, including Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Viognier, Pinot Gris, Montepulciano, and Sangiovese. The Vines restaurant on-site complements these fine wines with a delectable menu that showcases local flavors.
Fabulous, tasty meal and amazing wine tasting. Cellar Master was knowledgeable and engaging. We loved learning more about the wines and stories about the wine making process. It was a lovely relaxing tasting made better with the food. Food was absolutely delicious. The seafood was fresh and tasty. Relaxing meal in a beautiful setting. Entrees about $20, mains $40, wine tasting was $10 (very reasonably priced for the quantity and quality), but we bought six bottles so not charged.
Toni I — Google review
My partner and I went for lunch and a wine tasting. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable about their wine. The service was great and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend the duck, pork belly, and the sticky date pudding!
Jessica D — Google review
Nice lovely place. Welcoming staffs. I don’t drink wine, but those in my team enjoyed wine tasting and ended up buying a Chardonnay. Not in menu, but they made a coffee for my mum 😊. But if you are a vegan, the only item in menu is Canneloni. We were 50% vegan in our team, and had to order two Canneloni coz no option.
Dev M — Google review
Didn’t wine taste, we only sat down for lunch after a rail bike tour. Service was excellent, location - stunning and crucially, the food was delicious. The manager was apologetic that there was a bit of a wait but the wait times were pretty reasonable & the food came out relatively quick. We had the hummus dip with fresh crunchy bread, a cannelloni with creamy ricotta spinach filling and sticky lamb ribs which was finger licking good. Highly recommend.
Sandeep M — Google review
Excellent option. Having lunch by the vineyard is pretty special. We were a group of 10 celebrating the end of the year. They had several groups in different areas, a very busy day. However, the crew managed very well to serve us. We all enjoyed food, beers, wine, an awesome selection of ciders and the atmosphere. Definitely worth it.
Nadia M — Google review
I can't speak highly enough of this place. We did the wine tasting, and had a meal. The Vinyard owner was just so passionate about presenting his wines to us - he had us captivated. We tasted six wines for $7.50 nz per person, which we thought was very reasonable and the food was exceptional.
Neil W — Google review
Absolutely amazing. A fabulous boutique winery. $5 for 5 wines and great hosting with them. Also dined and the food was superb. Desserts devine. A must if in Gisborne.
Michelle A — Google review
Lovely experience. Food was delicious (we had the tandoori chicken and chicken pate). Wonderful wine tasting with the cellar master (and owner) Shona. Wonderful range of wines, we took away a mixed case. Highly recommend, and recommend making a reservation in advance.

Another wine region to consider exploring is the area around Matawhero, which includes Matawhero Wines and Bridge Estate Vineyard. Matawhero Wines offers a charming outdoor dining setting where visitors can sample their wines and enjoy platters. Similarly, Bridge Estate Vineyard, open from Wednesday to Sunday, provides another opportunity to experience the local wines. Additionally, Bushmere Estate in Makaraka offers a more upscale wining and dining experience at their Vines restaurant.
Wrights has a special connection to me as they're Chardonnay was the tipple of choice for our engagement lunch. It's delicious. Love the values and journey of the family and can't wait to go visit the Winery one day!
Katie A — Google review
Beautiful outdoor eating area, although it is right beside the noisy highway. Decent white wines, and great food here, especially the pizzas. Service was friendly and informative regarding the wines.
Scott W — Google review
Wine was good. New staff who did not know the wine, which was odd. Good bread with the wine. Live music was a bonus. The children of the family who owned the winery were ok for me but others were not happy about how boisterous bordering on feral they were.
Michelle A — Google review
Pizza was lovely. Service was friendly, and attentive. Pleasant environment with sunny, shady, and even bean bag seating options... We got a discount from grabone.
Gareth B — Google review
Loved this place once we figured how the "picnic" menu worked. 1. There's a big self-service fridge where you grab Ciabatta, crackers, cheeses, olives, pesto etc. yourself. 2. Prices for the different items are on a black-board by the cabinet (sorry I should have included a photo). 3. Cutlery is also by the cabinet, grab what you want and take it to the cash register. 4. Order a glass of wine, or a taster ($12 - cheap!!) of 4. There was only one red available for tasting when we were there. 5, Take your wine and "picnic" outside to one of the tables, or eat inside, and enjoy! Food was great, wine was yummy, price was good, atmosphere was great. The French staff member was friendly and helpful. The only downside was the noise from the road, and the building and grounds could do with a cobweb/leaf cleanup.
Steve M — Google review
Lovely family run business. Very casual service as kids learn the ropes (part of its uniqueness). Pizzas are amazing, worth the drive! Love the wines and if you're lucky, there's really good live music!

Millton Vineyards & Winery, located in Gisborne, New Zealand, holds the distinction of being the country's first organic and biodynamic wine estate. Since 1989, they have been producing a variety of acclaimed wines that are now exported worldwide. The winery comprises four individual vineyards and three distinct brands. Visitors can enjoy tastings at the intimate cellar door set in a beautiful garden environment.
We had an excellent time tasting many wines. The staff here are personable and knowledgeable, and we received superb service, and had all our questions answered. I highly recommend you stop by this vineyard.

Great location and well established. Knowledgeable host for our tasting. Good wines. I would have liked to have tasted there more unusual wines and would have been happy to pay a little more to do so.
Michelle A — Google review
Beautiful venue and really good wine. Loved their Chardonnay, and generally I dont like Chardonnay. Worth a visit
M L — Google review
A fantastic find.. A long established winery that prides itself for doing things differently. What a shame it was raining while we were there. On a sunny day I can not think of a nicer place to sample their wines and share a platter while watching some cooks scratch around. The wines are beautifully crafted.. We filled the boot of the car and look forward to continue enjoying the wine in the weeks to come.
John W — Google review
Was really disappointed with our experience. We went here for a wine tasting ($5 for 6 different wines - good start) but we weren’t given clean glasses between each wine, (tasted a red from the same glass we’d tasted white and rose from). We were barely told anything about each of the wines except the names and ‘this is popular at the moment’, and worst of all they were all warm! None of the wines were refrigerated, and even when we bought a glass afterwards we were poured wine from yet another unrefrigerated bottle. Only one member of staff doing tastings for 3 separate groups of people was a bit of a stretch and at the end of the quick 10 minute tasting we learnt nothing about the winery itself! Did we catch you on an off day, the reviews were so promising?
Holly W — Google review
Beautiful setting and a great wine tasting with Alicia (sorry if I spelt your name wrong!), who was incredibly knowledgeable. The wine was delicious too, wish we'd left more time for a platter in the beautiful gardens. Would definitely recommend!
Catherine K — Google review
Bought a beautiful bottle of Voigner. Totally quaint vineyard and knowledgeable service. Shame we didn’t get the 10 dollar tasting price of the bottles you purchase. Would’ve bought few more but felt it a bit mean. I’d never of dreamed of buying this wine until I tasted it, delicious.

Organic wine producer in the Gisborne region. We enjoyed the lunch platter of salami, cheeses, crostini and olives. Having tasted a number of wines we purchased a bottle of Cheni Blanc and a bottle of Viognier. A pleasant lunch served by the knowledgeable front-of-house lady Worth a visit.

Eastwoodhill National Arboretum of NZ

Arboretum
Nature & Parks
Nestled in New Zealand, Eastwoodhill National Arboretum spans 135 hectares and was established in 1910 by Douglas Cook. The arboretum is dedicated to showcasing a wide variety of plant species that contribute to global ecology and conservation efforts. It also focuses on preserving endangered tree species and conducting educational research. Visitors can explore the diverse collection of exotic and native trees and shrubs, join guided tours, or visit the visitor center.
We walked on almost all the paths all morning. It was beautiful from the moment we arrived and it turned out to be some of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in New Zealand. And this was also the most beautiful arboretum I have ever seen. It was an absolutely fantastic morning, there was no wind and autumn had begun, so some of the trees had such beautiful yellow, golden and red colours at the same time that the grass was completely green and other of the trees were still completely green. Here and there some brightly coloured leaves had fallen down on the path, there were red ripe apples hanging on the trees and there were real chestnuts, horse chestnuts and unusually large acorns on the forest floor. I also saw a very beautiful tree with the largest magnolia fruits I have ever seen. And everywhere there was such a lovely smell of autumn, and I thought about how cozy autumn is.

Stayed for one night on our bike ride. All the facilities a cyclist needs. Very homely accommodation and amazing food. We couldn't have asked for more. Will definitely be back again. Thank you
Eleanor W — Google review
Terrific combination of beautiful surroundings, extraordinary staff who are committed to helping you, good selection of tracks to hike. Te Ah at reception (I hope I spelled his name correctly) was like a friend trying to ensure I had the best possible visit. I enjoyed plunger coffee and a cheese toasty (with onions) - $5/ea. I can understand where most scenic reserves/conservation areas are free; the idea of paying a fee may be problematic. This is worth your time and money.

Rere Falls

Nature & Parks
Waterfalls
Rere Falls, located on the Wharekopae River, is a charming 5-meter high and 20-meter wide waterfall surrounded by picturesque farmland. Visitors can enjoy a large picnic spot and a beautiful swimming hole nearby. Recent rainfall has made the falls spectacular, creating great photo opportunities. However, caution is advised due to submerged tree branches in the water. The area features park benches for relaxation and picnics.
Nothing quite like a wall of water with a light mist to give you perspective on the majesty and magic of nature. Great place to stop for a picnic or just take time to reflect. The sound of the waterfall can be soothing and hypnotic. Great place to stop. Only a few steps from the carpark. Enjoy
David V — Google review
Around 30km from Gisborne. I was lucky to visit this with much water. Small toilet and benches are there.
Malitha B — Google review
Lots of car park available, note that it has one car lane. The waterfall is seen straight away when still driving towards the car park. Easy walk down to the waterfall, it can be muddy. The view is amazing, the waterfall is massive. To get as close as possible to the waterfall will require going through mud and rocks. A table with benches is available if you wish to have a picnic.
Natalia U — Google review
That was amazing experience over there that was the perfect sport to picnic, swim and sliding downs the rock must visit everybody 😀
Sourabh — Google review
As it has been raining a lot lately, the falls were spectacular and we got some great photos. The water was warm, though you need to watch for submerged tree branches when walking out in the water and swimming. At lot of tree debris have been washed down stream during the recent storm's and could do with clearing. There's park benches by the waterfall so a nice place to relax, have a picnic and watch the waterfall.

It was closed due to the bank side being damaged, so I parked at the entrance on the side of the road. Has a very big car park, toilets, rubbish bin, and table and seating. Waterfall is right at car park, so very little effort to see this spectacular waterfall

Definitely the best stop when in Gisbourne! So much fun to be had. Make sure to bring a body board to slide down the natural slip n slide. Then spend some time at the waterfall, can even walk behind & slide or jump off. Amazing fun for all ages

Rere Rockslides

Nature & Parks
Geologic Formations
What an awesome natural water slide. Caution is important - it's slippery! I saw people losing their footing as they walked across the stream to get set up for the slide down. Be prepared for your air mattress or boogie board to take an unexpected turn. It's rock that you'll be banging against. And it looked like the people sliding had fun!
David V — Google review
Always been an incredible place with some dark New Zealand history though, but a fun place to go to, just be aware it's a rock slide so be careful cause you can get hurt.
Urban K — Google review
The rock slide is a lovely natural wonder which looks like it would be fun on the right day. The reason for the low rating is re all the untidy Kiwis, there was rubbish all over the place, even in the water, blow up mattresses, tyres, bottles etc. The rubbish bins were overflowing with rubbish on the ground. If you have driven all this way with the food, drink, body boards, mattresses etc, take it all home with you. This was the worst I have ever come across in NZ. Not a good picture.
Darryl S — Google review
There are two car parks, one at top and one at the bottom where the toilet is. There are tables and seating next to the rock slide. It's such an awesome way to cool off on a hot day. I highly recommend doing.
Leon K — Google review
Looks like a great place to have fun sliding down the rock slides. There are warning signs up giving advice and injury is a possibility. We were on our own, so decided it wasn't safe to try, also no mobile phone connection available for emergency. I would definitely recommend a body board or mattress for sliding down. There's a fairly deep pool at the bottom, worth checking out for obstructions hidden under water before sliding (submerged free branches etc).
Chris B — Google review
Such a great day out for everyone. For the adventurous the rockslide is terrific endless fun. You can go again and again. Make sure you bring a body board but if you forget there are some broken ones in the skips. You can also bring smaller children as there is an area suitable for them to play.
Jamie C — Google review
Good fun, best to take an inflatable mattress/ air bed for best use. Body boards are ok. Generally safe, however you can expect a few bruises and bumps if you come off your equipment. Can get busy during peak periods, most people only stay for an hour or two. Toilets available to go to or to get changed in which was a bonus
Matthew H — Google review
A lot of fun if you are adventurous - imagine it would be even better if there had been a good rainfall before. A boogie board with handles would be better and safer than the assortment of yoga mats, etc that we saw

Lake Waikaremoana, located in the remote wilderness of New Zealand's North Island, offers a backcountry experience amidst lush forests, waterfalls, and stunning lake views. This area is rich in Maori history and is home to a variety of walking tracks, including the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. The trek features some uphill sections but is generally manageable for most hikers. It's recommended to visit during summer when there are more people around and the weather is milder.
Wow, so beautiful. Did the Great Walk for four days. So peaceful and lovely spots to stop and camp or stay in huts.
Deb S — Google review
Love this place. A world away from civilisation. Relaxing or adventure, camping or hiking, swimming, or boating the choices here for a holiday are endless. I've been coming here for over 20 years. My kids have enjoyed many holidays here playing and fishing on the lake. Great for families or even go solo. The hike trails are really well maintained with tramping huts. One of NZs great walks. The views are stunning. Love it

Went for a ride up the Napier Taupo road and just before waipunga falls took a left through the whirinaki forest to minginui then turned right to head to lake waikeremoana absolutely amazing country, native bush as far as you can see . I was expecting old camping grounds but was pleasantly surprised and the nice modern looking facilities . Next time I will stay and have a look around but I had to get back home this day . Great ride
Garry E — Google review
A hidden gem, beautiful Lake tucked deep into the back country. If you don't mind a few corners and dirt roads, check it out. Definitely off the beating track, but has that untouched feel to it.
Simi T — Google review
I'd recommend going during the summer because there will be more people around and because it gets quite cold up there on the winter. The trek is not that hard, it does have some uphill parts that will make you a little tired depending on how heavy your stuff is. Don't forget to bring enough food if you're doing the whole walk, make sure you bring fire sources and a good camping knife. Water and wood are provided at the huts. You'll have beautifull views of the lake, it is worth a visit.
Douglas O — Google review
Beautiful Lake and heaps to do in the region. If coming from north the gravel road is intense and takes a good car and experienced driver. Definatley worth it when you get there it is beautiful and serene, the forest and surrounding lakes are also mind blowing. Ultimate place to relaxation and exploring nature at its finest and untouched. The photos form the lake high up are from Loos lookout its a 30 min walk up, and 15 mins down
Sarah H — Google review
Beautiful walk! If you are fit and don't stop all the time to take photos of the many point of view, you'll probably be much faster than what the sign are saying so take your time and enjoy!
Cyrille G — Google review
Waikaremoana is a beautiful place with amazing views of the lake. Natural bush as far as the eyes can see. It has many walkways that are a mixture of easy and med hiking. I would recommend that you visit during summer time as winter can be challenging. With snow and road closures due to road/hill slips. Also if you visit please ensure to keep Te Urewera clean by taking all your rubbish with you when you leave. No electricity, No cell reception, No Gas and No Treated water. You can rent a beaken from the boat transportation service areas. We did trekking during winters and I will recommend you to try it out in Summers orelse trekking would be challenging. We were unable to use the tracks either.

A majestic and spiritual piece of bush that cannot be missed. Makes you pine for a world where farms had not replaced such lush and energy laden places but thankfully this small section was spared. Great collection of unusual plants for those looking to learn more as well

Lovely little walk yo do with with family with several loops to choose from depending on how much time you have. Beautiful bush with super interesting history to learn about. I often take my little baby for a walk through which she loves and the entire path to the tree is accessible with a push trike or pram. I always take our visitors through and there is even a geo catch located here and locals whom hide painted rocks which is super fun for the kids.

Excellent service. Arrived at Bushaven at 0755 and were on the road at 0800. I learned a lot about the area from John and others on the shuttle over the two hours it took to get to the trail head. It was as good as any tour. Pakihi track was amazing. This is a must do trip.

Gwen and John from Bushaven's Motu trails hire and shuttle were great, fabulous communication, friendly and efficient driving ( as well as great advice), and the perfect place to start/finish our AMAZING bike ride of the Pakihi trail. Much appreciated! Thank you!

Hi John, I wanted to pass on my thanks for all your phone advice. I had a lot of questions and you patiently answered them all, even though you knew we would not be booking with you (as we only wanted bike hire for an afternoon), To anyone reading this, John was super helpful and gave up his time to assist us even though we were not going to be spending money with him. Highly professional and recommended.

In short: We tried to rent 2 mountainbikes to do the Pakihi Trail but it was not possible for the Motu Trails Team to assemble 2 mountainbikes that are safe to ride so they cancelled our trip without any excuse after 1h of fixing 4 bikes. Just don´t try to rent a bike there, they do not bother about maintenance at all, easy to tell. All the bikes had issues, like not working gear shifting, holes in the tires (and they charge you for using their tubes if you have a flat on the trail, haha), brakes not working, not even to mention the non functioning suspension fork. If we wouldn´t have asked for fixing the problems when we arrived they would have sent us with really unsafe equipment on the trail, unbelievable. They had plenty of time because we booked via phone days in advance. In the end they wheren´t even sorry about the day and the money we´ve lost due to their incompetence, the even blamed us for "loosing fate in their equipment", ridiculous.

Never knew Opotiki had a museum or how good it was! First floor is all manner of everyday implements and stuff from the surrounding area collected and displayed in little groups e.g. Collection of stuff from the old Opotiki hospital, farming implements & stationary engines, etc. Second floor is less exciting with old photos from the past & geological stuff. The third floor is a real treasure with a big selection of Maori artifacts & mock-ups of various homes during Opotiki's history.

While motor vehicles are not permitted on the beach, farm bikes can access it easily. Ample parking facilities are available nearby. This idyllic location allows visitors to catch glimpses of White Island and permits fires on its sandy shores. Although camping regulations remain uncertain, pets are welcome year-round.
Amazing destination to stop at, enjoy a swim, walk the never-ending beach, and enjoy an ice cream from Koasty Kones in the parking lot. There is a section of the beach with lifeguards present. Appears the beach is quad friendly. You may have most of the beach to yourself.

Beautiful beach with plenty to do, swim, quad 4x4, fishing or just chilling. Not accessible to vehicles except farm bikes but plenty of parking near the beach. This is one of my favorite places ever. Sort of grew up at its edges, and watched time pass from the bridge to the river mouth. If you do follow it to the sea, there is a jetty to fish from or launch a boat. A very cool kids playground. And a beautiful view at sunset to spend moments, maybe with some fish and chips.

Further on are clean public toilets and playground and near the heads is the bronze statue of lady in the rock.Hungry after your stroll?stop at Gibbos fish shop for fresh mussels and take in the sunset.

Bodies of Water
One of my favorite places around Whakatane, this place is a hidden gem. You can only get here by foot: either down the hill from Otarawairere road or around the first part of the Kohi point track. I think the latter is easier, especially for kids, and way more scenic. The bay itself has beaches made of fine pieces of shell rather than sand. The beach going into the water is a bit steep but you can swim here. There are rockpools at various places round the bay for fossicking through. No facilities so take only photos & leave only footprints.

So thankful that we came across this during our visit. We spent almost two hours sharing cultures while witnessing and engaging in traditional spoken and sung lore. The multimedia presentation in the historic lodge was worth the price of admission alone.

The must-visit Puketapu Lookout in Whakatane offers a brief yet rewarding activity, particularly for photography enthusiasts. This site has served as a lookout for the local Maori community, specifically the Ngati Awa iwi, for over six centuries. Formerly a Maori fortification known as a Pa site, it now stands as an organized viewpoint showcasing panoramic vistas of the town and rivermouth.
Nice, easy walk up from the main drag (The Strand). Lovely views over the waterfront and to the hills to the West.

Another historic site around Whakatane. This lookout was once a Pa site or Maori fortification but these days it's a curated lookout over the whole town and rivermouth. There is a small amount of parking at the bottom of the short track up the hill to the lookout and the large grassy area at the top has been fenced off. The views from the top are well worth the short uphill walk to get there. There's also a slightly longer walkway across the road to another old Pa site - the Papaka redoubt.

We visited today and most was closed in preparation for MMC awards. While we appreciate this needs time to curate,we did not expect the static displays of early history to be so fragmented.Items were listed but missing, replaced by a bottle of whale oil for example, but not one was fully as described.A Swedish sign from early life at the mills, was pivoted so you saw the back of it,guns described as carried by WW1 soldiers were not in the locked cabinets, either there has been pilfering or staff have removed items for maintainence and not replaced them. Its irritating to read about an item and be unable to view it. Come on,if you have a museum, then curate it and check it regularly. If you take an item out of display then replace it with something else and amend your information. This is regular curation practise.

Excellent facility with very helpful staff. I also visited the museum and library closer to town. What displays were there were Excellent but the art section appeared to take up far touch space for what what was there and could be better used by condensing much of it and increasing the historical area.

Not a museum, apparently the taonga are in the library. Wouldn't know, the directions to the library were vague. They let us use the loo though. Thanks.
Kees H — Google review
Wish there was more to look at, a lot of Taonga was removed. But good atmosphere and good relevant history.

The Whakatane iSITE Visitor Information Centre is staffed by friendly and helpful employees who provide great recommendations and assistance with accommodation in Gisborne before traveling to the area. They also recommend Ocean Beach Lodge, which is a clean and welcoming place that is highly recommended for anyone visiting. The staff at the centre are welcoming and provide all necessary information, including showing a video about White Island. The lodge has a beautiful deck that offers views of the water, boats, and mountain behind it.
Struggled to find where the site had been moved to but attentive and helpful staff. I bought a lovely colourful NZ Tea towel for my daughter in Sydney.

I came across a visitor to Whakatane in a bit of a state she needed to get to the Isite to purchase a bus ticket to get to Taupo to attend an urgent family matter. I phoned the I site and asked what time they were closing and there was only a few minutes to go so I asked if they could please wait as this was urgent, and she was an elderly lady and although it was the end of their work day they kindly waited. The customer was so happy and thankful. This is the service we love to know visitors to our town can rely on. Thanks to the team I site 😊.

Probably one of the best where you are guaranteed to receive high quality customer service from the kindest people who absolutely knows their stuff when it comes to Whakatāne and the Eastern Bay of Plenty

Great I site. And a awesome area dedicated to white island, very interesting to learn the history.

We didn't go inside the center but we were impressed with the public spaces, parks & broad walks.

Outstanding service here. Everything you need to know about adventuring in the community can be found here - and there is service where they can organise a bike hire for you. What ever your interests are, you can talk to the amazing local staff, and they will help make your visit to the Eastern Bay a memorable one.

Julians Berry Farm and Café

Cafe
Julians Berry Farm and Café, located just outside Whakatane, is a popular spot for families and berry enthusiasts. The farm offers pick-your-own berries and a variety of frozen options. Visitors can enjoy real berry ice creams, explore the playground, or play mini golf. The café serves a diverse lunch menu all under NZ$20. Additionally, visitors can sample award-winning beers or seasonal brews like the Merry Berry Cider made with berries from the farm.
Very nice place and worth a visit, for both kids and adults. They are located near Whakatane town and have got a fair dinkum strawberry farm. The desserts and ice creams available at the cafe are probably the best we had in any strawberry farm till date. There are so many options to choose from, and they are very affordable. A Mixed berry frozen yogurt, a strawberry sundae, Whittaker's, strawberry ice cream with waffle cone, and Greek yogurt with strawberries.....all these together cost us $50 only !!! We did order a few more protein smoothies and four different burgers as well. The pork and chicken pieces in the burger were very fresh and NOT just generic patties. Also to mention - there are multiple options for kids to play, and huge grounds. Basketball, baby golf, puzzles, slides, swings to keep them engaged
Sandy S — Google review
Great place to take kids for delicious ice creams and smoothies and a chance to run around and explore the activities. My sons (aged 2 and 5) had a great time on the basketball court, mini golf, and playground. Plus lots of time running on the grass under the trees. Relaxing for the parents and kids!

Went here for a kai and my favourite part, to visit the animals . Although it was packed to the max, everything about it was excellent. The Food, service and atmosphere was amazing. Got the Angus burger and 1/2 pancakes. Loved them both

Went to have a brekky for my partner's birthday, we absolutely loved it ! A classic bacon&eggs croissant, delicious ! But for us the masterpiece was the strawberry cup with melted chocolate, that was sumptuous !! Beautiful place to relax, enjoy a sunny morning, pick up berries, we will definitely come again ! And also the staff is super nice so I 100% recommend this place !

A family business with other staff that come back each season. If you’re in Whakatāne it’s a place that you must visit. The mini golf is very well looked after and the food is delicious.

10:10 Great Atmosphere. Lots of things for Kids, mini Farm, Basketball Court and mini golf. Good coffee, and wait time was good given it was very busy. Lots of food and drink options. Lots of berry products. Very busy place but huge dining areas so easy to choose seats in 4 different dining areas. Whole place spotlessly clean. Lots of staff and different product counters so efficient prompt service. Easy spend an hour here. Highly Recommended.

Awesome. Must try the food, ice creams, fresh fruits, the animal yard. We’ve been eating here for the past 10/11 years. We’ve never had a bad experience. We absolutely looooove Juians! The food is awesome, the place is beautiful and clean, the staff are always ready to assist! We are very grateful that we can enjoy this place every summer, sunshine or rain! Great great experience!

We had to work to find the Strawberry’s, but totally worth it! Lovey activity to do and the frozen yoghurt was very tasty at the end! Lots more to do here to. Perfect family outing. As you can see, we had them on our Christmas pavlova. 😋

We used the swimming pool for paying visitors and guests who are staying in cabins It was quiet when we got there at 9.30am The pool temperature was wonderfully warm

Pools are great. Good temperature and clean Camp facilities tired but clean. The showers are nice and hot For the price we paid I would say excellent value for money. We would come back.

My family and I stayed for the weekend we stayed in motel B don't get me wrong we had a lovely stay the pools are always on point the temperature is just right. And also can't moan about price of motels they nice and cheap, would I go back yea I would love it. But my review are on the rooms, the lights outside on walkways, uneven surfaces on road way to pools, and also the kids playground. Room 1. Oil heater is really outdated still didn't heat room up. 2. No power points in room 3. Because it's winter you need more heating in rooms or fix windows. 4. Fix TV problem 😞 room B only channel was 3 on all channels. 5. Holes in floors by entrance of room 6. Sliding doors of small motels need to be fixed really hard to open my partner said you have to lift and slide. As his mother stayed in this one. Outside 1. Uneven surfaces of road - potholes 2. Walkway light turns on and off 3. Playground is really unsafe 4. Paving around the BBQ area are uneven and not safe.

So first of all, the room that sleeps “six people” I DONT THINK SO. “Double bed” I DONT THINK SO. If you’re advertising a room for six people why does the hot water run out after two showers?? Seems like ya taking on a bit more than ya can handle 😂 Also mildew all over the room, ewww. Massive red stain on the carpet in the bedroom too, so not a good look. Many suspicious brown stains on the walls, ewwwww Not to mention THE ANT INFESTATION, sort it out buddy. Sincerely, the valued guests from flat 5☺️

Not going back until it's brought out by the Top 10 or Tasman Holiday Parks and they update it. The cabins are like crack houses. Pot holes everywhere. Rude office staff. Owners that obviously don't care. We were supposed to stay two nights but we left after one due to the disgusting cabin and the mould everywhere.

i enjoyed the spa but the place needs a tidy up , the taps to top up and change the spa temp are under the spa so you have to crawl under to change the temp , it needs to have the taps put back on the top of the spa . they should charge more $$ like $30 for the first 30 min then $20 for an additional 30 minutes . its great for sore legs and i will go back
Mac U — Google review
Nice place, established but well maintained. Comfortable cabin with everything you need. Pool was a perfect temperature. Friendly staff.
Ali R — Google review
Do not stay here! Disgusting, old and run down. Massive holes in the floor, only thing stopping you from falling through was that carpet or Vinyl over the top of holes. Water kept appearing in puddles on the floor. Hot water cylinder so small it’s empty after one quick shower, can’t close bathroom or toilet doors, they are rotten and swollen. Motel units stink, they are dirty, no smoke alarms, less than half the lights work, TV doesn’t go, my husband had to bang windows closed from outside as pulling them shut from inside didn’t work. Oil heater has seen better days, melted bits of plastic on it with wheels missing, freezing!! Ceiling paint is falling off, other parts look like they will cave in with next lot of rain.,, I don’t know how they are still operating.

Pump track is a blast. Zephyr and Tommy are a must ride when visited. Note. Tommy has a drop at the end that is easy to crash on coz it has heaps of roots leading up to it

Great mt bike park for all abilities. Fairly small, you can do all the tracks in a morning, and no toilet facilities. Well groomed trails

Zephyr and Tommy are my favourite tracks in here. Great little mountain bike place. Please support Whakatane mountain bike club so they keep the tracks up to speck. Much appreciated 👍
