West Coast Tree Top - Zipline South Island

Nature & Parks
Located in the South Island, West Coast Tree Top - Zipline offers a thrilling experience amidst nature. Visitors can explore a 20-meter-high canopy walkway over mature rimu trees and enjoy panoramic views of the coast, lake, and forest. The site features a spiral viewing tower, cafe, and souvenir shop for visitors to relax and take in the surroundings. Additionally, there is a 425-meter double zipline that provides an exhilarating adventure through the treetops.
Great walk around the tree line, I have vertigo so was a challenge for me and the walk way does have a bounce to it. But the views are a must see. The walk should only take around 45 minutes but could be up there for more time. Especially going up to the top of the tower, which anyone who loves adrenaline and thrilling activities can zip line from the tower down to the entrance for a extra cost, This was not for me and couldn't even attempt the tower climb due to my vertigo. But a must do if your in Hokitika, West coast.
Annie — Google review
This is a place where you can walk while looking at the great view from high trees. It is a place where you can walk along the course made at the top of the tree (about 25 meters high). If you go up a little past the ticket booth, you will see the tree top walking starting point, and it takes about 20 minutes to look around the entire course. The course is not long, but you can see the great view from high up and see various birds in nature. (It is not easy to find or see.) There is an observation deck at the midpoint of the course, and if you go up to this observation deck, you can see the sea across the forest. Overall, the great view and the unique experience of walking on a tree top are great, but since these courses are 25 meters high, the installed bridge shakes a little every time you walk, so if you have a fear of heights, I recommend you think again, and you do not necessarily need a reservation for this experience. There is no problem even if you just go without a reservation.

We got a deal online, so ticket price was halved, so we did zipline & walkway combo. All the staff were SUPER helpful and friendly. Zipline was fun and felt very safe with all the checks .
Carol J — Google review
We had a great time here. Very quiet as out of weekend/holiday so cannot comment on how it would be the other side of that coin! Clearly signposted from the highway, Friendly and helpful staff. The walk was great, lots of education along the way if you can handle the heights for long enough! Climbing the tower was great too with exceptional views, we even timed it to watch some people do the Zipline (which looks awesome by the way, next time!!). Would very much come back and my girlfriend who has vertigo, enjoyed it too.... The walkway was as solid as you could hope and she appreciated conquering her fears enough to experience being within the tree canopy. Well worth the trip and money
Brendan F — Google review
It'd be better on a clear day but a foggy forest isn't too bad. Quite pricey for a walk but the staff were friendly and overall felt very safe.
Shaun R — Google review
Amazing views from the platforms. I climbed into the tower and it was breathtaking. Son did the Zipline and said it was fantastic.
Hope — Google review
Absolutely fantastic Views and great experience Bit expensive for a walk but definitely enjoyed the experience
Finn R — Google review
Absolutely brilliant experience. My 75 year old mother and I took part in our first zip line experience. Matthew was lovely, and brilliant at explaining the process, and gave us very clear instructuons..... the whole experience was an absolute joy, and my mother loved it. Tea and cake at the cafe topped off a wonderful morning. A huge thanks to all staff!

Beaches
Hokitika Beach Sign is a must-visit landmark in the charming town of Hokitika, located on New Zealand's South Island. The town offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, with stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and breathtaking sunsets. While many visitors come for the magnificent gorge, there's much more to explore in Hokitika.
If you are staying in Hokitika, it is definitely worth it to have a stroll at this beautiful long beach. Especially around sunset is a great time to come here as this beach is orientated to the west. The beach is very clean. The sign of Hokitika in wooden sticks is super iconic.
Stephen — Google review
Absolutely awesome beach! Clean sand, clear water, and a super relaxing vibe. The sunset was stunning and the whole atmosphere felt peaceful and refreshing. A perfect spot to unwind — loved every moment ☺️
Arjun B — Google review
Hokitika’s beach is rugged and beautiful, lined with rocks, crashing waves, and plenty of driftwood shaped by the sea. The highlight is the famous “HOKITIKA” driftwood sign, a creative landmark and a must-stop photo spot. Walking along the sand, you’ll find driftwood scattered everywhere and may even try spotting pounamu (greenstone), treasured by the Māori as a protective stone. It feels like a small treasure hunt, adding charm to the stroll. We also noticed locals arranging wood and stones into messages like “HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025,” giving the beach a creative, personal touch. The best moment comes at Sunset Point, where people gather to watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea. The driftwood letters glow golden, the sky turns deep orange, and the atmosphere feels calm yet unforgettable. A must-visit stop on New Zealand’s West Coast.
Vincent L — Google review
Sign needs fixing but still nice stop. War pillbox was even better to see.

The Wilderness Gallery, located in the heart of Hokitika, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. It showcases the award-winning photography of Juergen Schacke, known for capturing stunning landscapes. In addition to his work, the gallery features a diverse range of local art and crafts, including woodwork, pottery, pounamu carvings, and limestone fossil pendants.
Very nice souvenir shop with unique craft souvenirs made by local artists. I stopped there the two times I went to Hokitika as I loved their bird brooches hand painted and with paua shell finition. I took one for each of my family member and myself ! I would definitely recommend to have a look if you are on a hunt for special NZ souvenirs.
Anicka W — Google review
An awesome shop to support the local artists. As an ads Accredited tour guide, I’ve driven pass this city many times but never had the chance to go in. Now I do. Lots of interesting things to sell, price tags are high. I suppose the rent in Hokitika isn’t much as such big shop wouldn’t exist in Auckland. Hope that this shop can survive in this Covid global pandemic.

A fantastic gallery run by Juergen Schacke and his wife Monika featuring Juergen's stunning photos and local crafts. They have recently taken over the Craft Gallery next door and both offer riches of local art and crafts, an absolute treat!

While on holiday at the moment, I brought my husband's birthday gifts here a few days ago and the selection of quality items for sale were stunning, and beautifully displayed. I was most impressed with the lovely lady serving who did not rush me to make a decision, was very helpful and she gift wrapped my purchases really nicely. I left incredibly happy, thank you for a delightful shopping experience.

Thanks for the no pressure and supportive approach to our purchase Juergen and Monika. What a cool place you have - our best wishes to you for your future.

The shop is always full of colour & art that reflects, the rugged west coasts terrain and the sunsets, colours that are unlike anywhere. Warm welcome smile as you walk in the door from the host. Our days off we come to Hokitika from Moana.

The National Kiwi Centre, located in the heart of Hokitika, is a wildlife center and freshwater aquarium showcasing native New Zealand animals. Visitors can witness the country's famous national bird, the kiwi, along with other unique creatures like the tuatara and giant eels. The center offers a special nocturnal house where guests can observe these fascinating animals up close. Additionally, there are opportunities to see West Coast creatures such as whitebait and crayfish.
Great place to stay entertained and busy! Loved all the tropical fish, NZ eels, NZ fish, kiwi, etc. You can even catch your own crayfish and release them back to their enclosure. Such a fun experience loved every second.
Brodie B — Google review
This was our only time that we were able to see the famous kiwi bird in New Zealand, and it was amazing! The rest of the centre is nice, but mostly oriented to children I would say. When we were there, there were some school groups there, and definitely fun for them. It was nice, but not sure if it was worth the price.
Stephen — Google review
Went here with my partner & 3 year old. Great wee activity & place to visit especially while raining outside. Lots of interesting things to learn inside & our highlight was feeding the eels. The staff are lovely & kind. All look so happy to be there with positive energy towards each interaction! I would recommend this place to others
Kayla S — Google review
There is no more than the kiwis and all the introductions are so interested. We saw both of the kiwis and they are more cute than I imagined! Plus, feeding eels that needs courage was an amazing experience! The staff are so nice and patient. It was a wonderful day.
Healer — Google review
The National Kiwi Centre has several fishes and eels and two Kiwi's. You can feed the eels 3x a day, I went to the feeding at 10 which was very nice! You get a little more info about the eels and you can pet them if you want. Afterwards the Kiwi's also got their food, which made them easier to spot. You cannot take photos of the Kiwi's, but you get a photo afterwards as compensation. You can also catch crawfish, which was very fun to do! The staff is very friendly, and I had a lovely time.
Nadia T — Google review
As two adults visiting from the U.K we had a fantastic time! There is a key focus on conservation and education, all of which was really informative. Our favourite part was how hands on the activities are! We got to feed eels (and touch them!), try our hands at catch-and-release fishing, and watching Kiwis being fed all of which is at no extra cost and included in the ticket price! We also took part is a treasure hunt and were rewarded with chocolate at the end, and were gifted a photograph of one of their Kiwis as a keepsake to take home. This is a really enjoyable experience and not one to be missed when visiting Hokitika!
Anya B — Google review
Absolutely loved our visit to the National Kiwi Centre! The centre itself is lovely, with various native species and information about them. We were a bit early on in the season so it was fairly quiet, which meant plenty of time to walk around, find Nemo for a chocolate fish (for all ages! 😁), and enjoy seeing both Kiwis. The talk given about the eels at feeding time was both fun and informative, and it is good to see them taken good care of (including releasing them back into the wild when the signs show they are ready to migrate). Their oldest eel (estimated at 110 years old!) was pointed out and when she popped up for a feed special attention was given that she did get her share 😊. Darren, who helped us at the counter both on entry and when we were leaving, was so enthusiastic and helpful, and even gave us a tip on a lovely little bushwalk close to town, which we did immediately after and which was amazing, everything he promised! Definitely recommend taking a stop at this lovely place, it's great fun for all ages 😊
Petra G — Google review
Cute, family friendly facility. Lovely and informative staff. If you’re feeling brave you should definitely feed the eels

Shantytown Heritage Park is a recreated 19th-century mining town in New Zealand, offering visitors the chance to experience the gold rush era. The park features steam train rides, gold panning activities, and historic reenactments that bring the pioneering stories of real New Zealanders to life. Visitors can wander through authentic 1860s shops and homes, as well as try their hand at gold panning using traditional techniques.
The visit surpassed my expectations. I’ve visited many historic artefacts displays but this was one of the best. Real quality stuff to see. Priceless steam trains, printing presses, medical equipment all sorts. Great to wander through the timber mill with lots of video displays. A working classic steam train. Probably a visit loved more by the guys than guyesses.
Mike L — Google review
Awesome activities with kids, mine were ages 12, 14 & 16 and all were entertained and enjoyed themselves, the gold panning was the highlight as well as playing around with the prison and reading the orewa hospital medicines. 100% highly recommended. A bit pricy for the whole experience $145 but worth it for all 5 of us.
Ruth L — Google review
We came on a busy day as they had a tourism convention going on, so parking was hard to find (this is not normal). We had a great time stepping back in time and walking around the town. There is a cafeteria for lunch or a snack /coffee etc and if you have a letter to post, if you take it with you, you can have it postmarked from Shantytown. There is a train ride you can take and the guide is very knowledgeable about the history. He operated an old sluice to demonstrate how they used to fire water at the rock they wanted to mine for. After that, the optional $10 per person will give you an opportunity to pan for Gold and you are given excellent instructions on how to do this. A great place to take the whole family! If you're going to do panning, allocate 2-3 hours minimum for this visit.
Raewyn V — Google review
You can’t miss this place when visiting the West Coast! You can ride the steam train, revisit the past at the museum, have some coffee and food, try to get lucky and pan for gold, or hang out at the playground. Locals can get a great deal with an annual ticket ☺️👌🏽 Awesome place to come with kids.
Jennifer W — Google review
Having lived in greymouth for the first 30 years of my life. I have visited many times. It has changed a lot. Definitely worth visiting at least once. Train rides three times a day. Open 7 days. There is a café also. Gold panning is available for $10 per person. Panning is part of the train ride. Getting gold from panning is garunteed. At the time of typing this review, gold is $7000 for a teaspoon( one ounce) of gold. So, the $10 fee for panning is well worth it.
Reuben M — Google review
Absolutely loved it, make sure to come early to give yourself time to walk around, lots o d history, steam train was an exciting experience and I loved the uniqueness of the town. Don’t know what all the negative reviews are for, I came when there was no costume actors around and I think they have done a wonderful job at showing the history. The lady in the front is also very kind and sweet. Highly recommend coming here if you love history
Carah L — Google review
Not what i expected, I have been to some great well maintained heritage villages and this is not one if them. Gives you a very basic insight into the past from a museum built 54 years ago and not maintained. Dirty dusty and dark, could do with a spring clean better lighting and more props.

Restaurant
Monteith's Brewery is a popular attraction in Greymouth, New Zealand, known for its wide range of beers and ciders. While not all the beer and cider are brewed on-site, the brewery offers popular tours. The brand is a well-known commercial name in New Zealand and has gained popularity as an attraction due to its association with one of the country's best-known beer brands. Visitors can enjoy brewery tours hosted by Suzie and Rocky, making it a cheerful experience for beer enthusiasts.
The vibe, food and service here was top tier! After a 4hr tranz alpine train ride from Christchurch to Greymouth, I was in need of a good feed and I definitely found it here! I ordered the ribs with beer battered chips, my partner had the fish and chips and we shared the Sunday lamb shoulder roast with gravy on roast potatoes and veges. My partner said the fish and chips were one of the best she has ever had which I promise, says A LOT! Me being allergic to seafood, couldn't partake in the fish lol! The ribs were very tasty thanks to their in-house sauce that the tender ribs were smothered in but those beer battered chips were freaking good! Chips on their own cost $17 which is pretty hefty, but i would pay that again for those chips! The biggest surprise was the lamb shoulder roast. Holy heck were they tender and full of flavour! I'm not a fan of Brussels sprouts but even they tasted amazing! I whole heartedly recommend stopping here for a feed, even if you must take a small detour to Greymouth on your adventure in the South Island.
Kelvin D — Google review
Food was amazing as well as the 6 paddle off beers. Well worth trying. Very cozy atmosphere and the food came out quickly.

Exceeded expectations. Service was quick, yet friendly. Food was fabulous. Fries were exceptionally memorable. Thick, crispy outside and fluffy inside.

Monteith’s Brewery is a fantastic spot to visit, even if you’re not there for the drinks. The food was excellent - fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. There’s a great variety on the menu, and everything we tried was cooked perfectly. The location is lovely, with a warm and relaxed atmosphere that makes it perfect for both families and groups of friends. It’s a great place to unwind, enjoy a good meal, and take in the surroundings. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area - it’s a memorable experience for the food and setting alone!

The best place to eat in Greymouth without doubt. It's colourful and lively and every dish we've tried was excellent. The service is prompt, this visit was a highlight of our West Coast visit.

My wife and I did the Monteith's Brewery Tour and stayed on afterwards for a meal. The tour was very good. It was interesting to learn about the history of the brewery, and it was great to get to pour and taste some of the beers. Our guide was really entertaining and knowledgeable too, which made the experience even better. The meal afterwards was first-class. The service was spot-on, and the food was excellent. Thank you Monteith's for such a great experience...on such a wet and windy day in Greymouth :)

Embark on the breathtaking West Coast Wilderness Trail, a stunning four-day cycling adventure covering 139km. This trail takes you through ancient bush tracks, tramlines, and railways while showcasing the region's diverse landscapes including rainforests, wetlands, and river valleys. The journey begins in Greymouth and leads inland to the Southern Alps before reaching Hokitika and Ross on the coast. With smooth terrain and four manageable sections, cyclists have the flexibility to choose their preferred route.
We did this from Greymouth for 20kms, by bike. You can go to the Honey Cafe, which is about 30kms at Kumara Junction. 👌

Stunning scenery and the bike only sections are really great, well worth the suggested $10 per day per person we paid. Unfortunately there are long stretches of joint use road from Kapitea Reservoir up to the first dam on the canal, the surface is being ruined by heavy 4x4 vehicles and quad bikes, we saw several on our trip. I bet they pay nothing to use these roads and it would be great if like other cycle trails in NZ motorised traffic is managed by locked gates.

My partner and I had the best day with steve and robin learning and making knives. Tucked away in a beautiful part of the west coast and freedom camping in town by the beach. The day was full of laughs and easy teachings, everyone there walked away with an awesome hand made knife from scratch and great memories. Nice locally made sheaths available for purchase to house the blade. Fantastic people and well worth a stop in. Cheers robin and steve will definitely be back when were next in your part of the world.

A must stop viewing point when passing through Arthur’s pass, the viaduct stands majestically, the skin and tall structure weaving through the magnificent gorge. As you sit and observe the many cars, trucks and bikers pass, you get to enjoy this engineering feast from above. Also, meet two Kea here for the first time, they are quite adorable 🥰

As a civil engineer, this lookout is awesome. You can see the whole valley and the viaduct in all its glory. Definitely worth a quick stop to take in the views and engineering of New Zealand.

An amazing day out to Otira Viaduct (deaths corner). A beautiful location to park up and enjoy the views, even if it was in deep fog and mist. The Keas were out and about and were gorgeous. It was saddening to see all the rubbish people leave behind there, I picked up and disposed of what I could, but its an outrageous amount. And the Keas will end up eating it. I will go back again and try and gather some more at some point. Super smart birds there, and an amazing place, which costs nothing to visit.

Absolutely stunning view point, such an impressive road. We were lucky in October to have a very clear day to see the view clearly. Would definitely recommend stopping here.

Fantastic view and experience. Saw some keas while over at the lookout. They really like to bite on the car rubber gaskets.

The Arthur's Pass National Park Visitor Centre is located in the historic village of Arthur's Pass, which has retained its old-world charm with a post office, Department of Conservation (DOC) office, petrol station, tea rooms, restaurant and accommodations. Situated 740 meters above sea level amidst beech forest and just 5 kilometers from the mountain pass it is named after, this center serves as a hub for travelers looking to explore the park.
Very nice visitors center with lots of helpful information. There are bathrooms nearby as well. The staff inside were so nice and helped us pick a hike.

This is a great day trip option from Christchurch! The drive is scenic as you get closer to the park and there are several places to stop along the way! There are several hiking options at and near the park! The staff at the DOC are quite helpful as well!

One of the best DOC hut in the country, very informative. Cute Kea kiosk :)

Great source of information about hikes of all levels of difficulty. Turns out half the staff are volunteer firefighters too having watched them turn out yesterday. There are also some souvenirs and clothing for sale. Don't forget to buy your hut passes too!

The team had absolutely excellent knowledge for us and others who were planning a long walk. Absolutely recommend talking to the team before heading out. They spoke about the places to walk/stay and places to not walk/stay. And also what places were good at the time of the year and for rainy conditions we had.

A nice place for a short break. The staff are friendly, and they provide tons of information about activities to do around Arthur's Pass National Park. There is plenty of parking in the area, and toilets are also available for free. See pictures and videos for details.

The Arthur's Pass National Park Visitor Centre is on State Highway 73 near the east end of the village. Opening hours are 8am to 5pm and there is a large carpark and public toilets available. A stop at the Visitor Centre is a good opportunity to pick up information on trail and road conditions, local weather conditions and any other information needed to support your visit to the Arthur's Pass area. You will also find an expected range of souvenirs and gifts here. There is an historic Cobb & Co stage coach and other interesting displays that make for a good way to spend 15-20 minutes. Lastly, there is a film you can watch regarding the history of Arthur's Pass. I believe the fee was NZ$2 per person for them to run the film.

Mt Hutt Ski Area

Temporarily Closed
Ski resort
Nature & Parks
Nestled north of Christchurch, Mt Hutt Ski Area is a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts. It forms part of the Three Peak Pass, offering access to multiple mountains with multi-day or season passes. Boasting stunning views over the Canterbury plains and the east coast, it's a favorite among families in the region. While praised for its beautiful runs and efficient lifts, some visitors have noted areas for improvement in customer service and food availability at the cafeteria.
Very crowded during school holidays if you can only make it after 11. Before 11, the lines are still decent and gets cleared very quickly. Love the runs on this mountain. The view at the top is spectacular. Staff are fast, efficient and helpful.
Rebecca L — Google review
I cannot in all honesty review the ski slopes since I do not snow ski. However the facilities at the ski centre are comfortable the trip up to the top of the slopes is an easy one on the ski-lifts. Once there you have fabulous views of the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plain laid out before you.
Bernard S — Google review
As an NZ resident and having skied South Island fields but no overseas fields, I can only judge what is available here. I think the negative comments from over seas visitors while accurate, are unrealistic. This is not Europe with millions of people, massive mountains and visitors with lots of money. Yes, the road up the mountain is pretty rough in places and some sealed parts or a plan to improve it over time would help safety, comfort and reduce likelihood of damage. Coronet Peak has a sealed road and has had it for years but it doesn’t have the snow levels like Hutt generally so pros/cons for both. Facilities here are quite adequate in my view as are the cafe facilities. The Hutt website is very good, including daily updates and webcam shots. Customer service? Initiating service in the rental area for a boot fitting enquiry was pretty slow, but when the older gentleman with glasses and beard in the storage area was advised, he was very helpful indeed so well done to him. Only one person on checkout duties in the cafe at lunch time, that wasn’t good and created an unnecessary queue. Lift facilities and speed are good as is the variable levels of skiing available. Overall pretty good, but to help public opinion maybe show what improvements are intended for the future so that the money paid by customers, can be seen being used wisely.
Felix N — Google review
I’ve been coming here for the past 2 years whenever I’m visiting South Island. This place has a few great trails & it’s more budget friendly compared with Queenstown. The only downside is that the weather here is more unpredictable & volatile compared with Queenstown so be prepared in case the hill gets closed early due to bad weather.
Charlie H — Google review
Love the Hutt. There's something for every skier here, from the faster speedskier making only a few turns, to the classy-careful skier and the beginner just starting to make turns. What makes Hutt a great experience is fewer people and quick lifts. No queues. Mt Hutt is effectively a bowl ski area where everything can be seen from the seating/cafes below (great for parents and non-skiers). It could do with a coffee shop/bar up the top though to savour the view and take in the rays. Exactly 1.5hours from Christchurch airport, and be the careful driver when coming up the hill... it's not for heroes or over-takers. Be patient, the drive is worth the chance to park meters from the shop, the tickets and the lifts. I'll be back.
Gavin S — Google review
Loved it. Magic carpet belt for beginners. A few chair lifts. There's a good range for every level of skiing or snowboarding. Lessons available. Great food, hot chips, chicken, awesome pizza. Buy passes online to skip the que.

Favourite place to ski! Great facilities, awesome food and beautiful views! Pizza & hot chocolate are 10/10 - I got both multiple times through the week. Though it’s a long drive up it’s certainly worth it. If you’re coming for the day I recommend driving up earlier to get parking. They offer free shuttles at the bottom car park if you miss out which is great.

Cave Stream Scenic Reserve

Mentioned on

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Cave Stream Scenic Reserve offers a unique adventure for those seeking something different. It's not your typical walk; it's more like caving. Visitors can venture upstream through the cave for about an hour before emerging on the other side. However, it's important to check conditions at the visitor center and go with company, equipped with spare flashlights. Heavy rain or snowmelt can make it dangerous, so caution is advised.
We came here after Castle Hill at about 1pm. There was plenty of parking. We went straight down to the cave entrance with head torches and made our way through. Straight away, it was waist deep and then got shallower. Throughout the cave, the water pressure and water depth varies. First time we have ever done something like this, way beyond my comfort zone for sure. We had no special caving equipment, just torches ,shorts & runners. Water was nice and refreshing, not freezing. We did see a young boy doing the cave with adults. Highly recommend . When we got back to the car, the carpark was very busy. It was a slightly windy overcast day.
Soo W — Google review
There was close to no one here even though it was super busy at Castle Hill Rocks and Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall. Easy descent to the entrance of the cave. Very cool to see but I couldn't venture in as the water was terribly cold and I didn't have the necessary equipment. Overall will recommend to people who are moderately fit as you have to hike back up and might have to hop around the rocks at the side of the lake.
David P — Google review
The cave is 5 minutes away from the castle Hill and village so would visit all 3 in one day 😀 to see the lower cave you need gumboots if not you can see it from above ..I would not recommend it to go with kids in winter the stream was rapid so is hard to cross with them but in summer I think is a great cooling idea . The water sound is magic and the scenery breathtaking ✨️..the great part in summer you can dive and get inside the stream but make sure you are with a skilled person so they know how and when to take you up the stream 😀 that will be a fun experience
Victoria B — Google review
Short walk between Christchurch and Arthurs Pass, it takes about 20 minutes unless you want to visit the lower cave entrance by the Broken River in which case there's a steep decent which can be wet and muddy. Should you wish to traverse the cave a headlamp is needed as you'll need both hands at times. Unless the water is very low enter the cave at the lower entrance, where the water exits, as the deepest water is near the entrance and if you're unhappy you can safely leave. The cave has no difficulties as a ladder makes climbing out easier.
Steve W — Google review
Great walk around to see the cave entrances, went into the exit one briefly as you can't go far in. The entry one was a bit full of water at the time so couldn't get very close. Weren't prepared to get feet wet on this occasion. Will be back next summer to walk through it. Still worth having a wander around and breathe in the mountain air.
Lizanne D — Google review
Nature’s hidden sculpture – Cave Stream Scenic Reserve Even without walking the full cave passage, this place is absolutely worth the stop. Watching how the Broken River has carved its way through the limestone over thousands of years is truly fascinating – a raw, powerful reminder of nature’s artistry. The contrast between the dark, echoing tunnel and the bright, green hills outside is striking. You don’t have to go underground to feel the magic of the place – just standing near the cave entrance and listening to the rushing water is an experience in itself. If you’re passing through Castle Hill, take the detour. Even a short visit will leave an impression.

What an incredible morning with our expert pilot Michael!! I have to admit, I was nervous going into it as I'm a bit iffy with heights but Michael made us feel at complete ease and it was one of the best things I've done in a long time, so if you're unsure, lean in and absolutely do it. One thing I wanted to highlight, the guys get you involved in setup, unpacking the balloon, helping inflate the balloon, etc and it was AMAZING! You get a real sense of how it all works and I really loved it. Deano on support was such a legend too. Thanks again Michael and Dean!!!

What an fantastic morning over the Canterbury plains with our expert pilot Michael. One thing to note is the guys get you involved in setup, unpacking the balloon, helping inflate the balloon, and the same after the flight. Gives you a real sense of what they encounter most days. Michael made the journey great. Being a farmer of 40yrs he had fantastic knowledge and explaining the different fields below and everything in between as well. He gives you an insight into who he is and why he started the business too which is awesome. The weather and sunrise was pretty fantastic as well! Both Michael and Dean are top notch. At the end of the flight they give you champagne/juice, fruits and muffins too. Such a great experience and highly worth the adventure.

A bucket list item for me! I can't recommend Ballooning Canterbury enough. An experienced, friendly Pilot and staff plus breathtaking views - an experience that I will never forget. The nerves don't stick around for very long that's for sure!

What an absolutely amazing ballooning experience we had this morning with Michael (the owner) and Dean! Michael’s knowledge of the area is incredible – not only is he a highly experienced balloon pilot, but also a local farmer who truly knows the land. We were treated to the most magnificent sunrise, and the way the team looked after everyone made the whole experience unforgettable. We chose to travel to Ballooning Canterbury after finding the staff at another company in Methven quite rude and unhelpful. From the first call, Michael was warm and reassuring, explaining that they always phone the night before to confirm (unlike some companies that leave you driving all the way out only to cancel on arrival). True to his word, we received a call with clear directions, and even a flashing orange light guided us into the driveway in the early morning darkness – such a thoughtful touch! Throughout the morning, we were captivated not only by the breathtaking views but also by the fascinating stories Michael shared, including the tale of the two French inventors of ballooning. This was a truly special and memorable experience, and we cannot thank Ballooning Canterbury enough. We highly recommend flying with them – you will not be disappointed.

What an absolutely amazing experience! The entire crew was so friendly, professional, and made us feel comfortable from start to finish. The flight itself was breathtaking — peaceful, beautiful, and perfectly organized. We had our marriage proposal from the skies, and it couldn’t have been more magical! Everything went beyond our expectations, and we’ll remember this moment for the rest of our lives. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure!

Incredible. If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Michael and his team went above and beyond for this tour. Michael himself is an air balloon champion (which he mentions very casually) so you know you're in good hands. The views are spectacular, the ride itself is smooth and Michael explains what you are seeing. The team also give you plenty of photo opportunities! I can't recommend them enough. They also have a surprise at the end for you! A bucket list experience for definite!

We had such an incredible experience with Ballooning Canterbury. The flight was a gift for my Mum's 60th birthday. We were awestruck watching the sun rise over the Canterbury plains and the moon set behind the mountains. Michael made it a special experience for everyone. We helped set up and pack down the balloon and were rewarded with mimosa's. I highly recommend Ballooning Canterbury and would like to thank Micheal and his team for making it "the best birthday ever".

We thoroughly enjoyed this experience, the views were incredible and the horses were so well behaved. We had a range of abilities and experience in our group, and yet everyone rode at a pace that suited individual needs...there were opportunities to have a trot or canter for the more experienced, which was awesome!! Can't wait to come back!!
Donna C — Google review
It's alright if you there to burrow a horse for the day to ride, but would not recommend taking your own horse. Girls were nasty to each other, and the lessons for trekking for example were not based of skill.. Got stuck in a group who couldn't do canter despite being a competitive rider, they then refused to switch group. Was a christmas present voucher for a course, ended up bawling to my mother on the way home about how horrid it was. GIrls also bantering with each other about their spiritual connections with their horse.
Kat K — Google review
Wouldnt ride anywhere else, absolute quality instruction with fantastic well cared for horses. They even offer riders the opportunity to compete on their horses which is awesome. You not only learn how to ride, you learn everything from horse mastership, grooming , how to lunge correctly etc.

Beautiful trek itself. Me and my dad went on the weekend special trek, however he got put on a 20 year old horse called Tuscany who clearly shouldn’t be ridden anymore. He had apparently already done a ride in the morning so he was “tired”. He was so slow that we had to stop every 5 minutes I would say to let him catch up and then we would go again, just for him to fall behind about 30 meters within about 20 seconds. Poor horse obviously not his fault would struggle up hill and was puffing while doing so, didn’t pick his feet up when walking either. Felt bad for the old boy. Me and my dad wanted to do this together but he was so far behind I couldn’t even chat with him the whole trek. I’m no pro but the stirrups length felt way too short and wasn’t checked on if it felt comfortable for my legs etc. , didn’t really get any instructions or information, just walked over to the step and was told how to walk stop and go left n right and off we went. Didn’t get to help groom and tack up the horse either like it says on the website description. Horses were already ready when we got there. I was looking forward to that part. Nice instructor though- neve her name is. Could tell she felt bad we had to use Tuscany and said she dosent like taking him on treks because he is so slow. $90 would of been worth it if we got to have a decent experience. Was just a bit disappointed as this was something I was really looking forward to with my dad and he just got left behind the whole way.

As someone who began their equestrian journey at Kowhai at the age of 8 and rode competitively for Viewhill pony club for 10 years , I can confidently say that Kowhai holds a special place in my heart. Kowhai isn't just a residential horse riding school; it's a transformative experience that shapes young riders into capable, resilient individuals. From the very start, I was immersed in a culture of responsibility and teamwork, where chores like clearing up after meals and grooming my own pony were integral parts of the learning process. Under the expert guidance of Mrs. Thomas and Bec Thomas, the level of instruction at Kowhai is unparalleled. They took me from being a complete beginner to competing in area trials and even earning a spot as a reserve for the Canterbury team for New Zealand pony club champs. Their dedication and expertise instilled in me not only the skills to excel in the arena but also the values of initiative and resilience that have served me well beyond the stables. But perhaps the most enduring aspect of my time at Kowhai is the friendships forged amidst hay bales and riding lessons. Even now, at 32 years old, my closest friends are those I met during those formative years at Kowhai. The bonds we formed through shared triumphs and challenges in the saddle have stood the test of time, a testament to the enduring community fostered by this exceptional establishment. In essence, Kowhai is more than just a place to learn to ride horses; it's a place where young riders are challenged, and supported as they grow into confident, capable individuals. My journey at Kowhai has shaped me in ways I couldn't have imagined, and for that, I am forever grateful.

The zoo map could be better to explore easily. The staff was very good. Kids enjoyed the visit, especially the dedicated animal feed times. Ample parking at the front. The shuttle service was very nice 👌. Kids love Tasmanian Devil. Overall nice to have a day out with the kids especially on a sunny day.

Great little Zoo. Spacious and uncrowded when we went as it was a weekday. The best experience was being able to feed the Giraffe's for free, I have never been to a zoo that offered this. The food and hot chocolates at the Cafe were super tasty and had plenty to choose from. Also the family ticket includes up to 3 children which is so great for families.

I purchased the year pass for me and my 3 yr old Grandson and loving it. Very different from Willowbank as so big and spread out but we always have a great time and takes us around 3 hours or more. Sometimes weve had great lion Roaring visit other times its the monkeys 🐒 or feeding the 🦒 🦒 🦒 Next visit aiming for the farmyard feeding and the playground is always fun. The cafe seems quiet and we end up always spending ages in the gift shop as brilliant array of things.

It was nice to go there around 1 o'clock on the weekend because it wasn't that crowded! If you go see the animals in time for feeding on the map, you can see many animals such as rhinos and giraffes right in front of your eyes, so families with children will be even better. I bought a ticket online in advance that day, and it was cheaper, so I was satisfied👍
Zinna — Google review
Went there few weeks ago and had very good experience. The staff was very helpful at the start by giving all the info with a map. There are primes available near reception if you have kid with you. We enjoyed our time seeing the animal. There was a bit disappointment for not seeing few of them as they are in large place surrounded with trees. But overall it was a very nice experience , our daughter loved it! Highly recommended!

Well worth a visit here, spacious and the animals have lots of room. Which can make them more difficult to see, of course. was hoping to see the African Painted Dogs but they only showed their heads above the grass briefly. The Gorillas and Keas made up for it.

The International Antarctic Centre, located near Christchurch International Airport, is a must-visit destination for travelers. It offers an immersive experience that brings the wonders of Antarctica to life. Visitors can explore simulated Antarctic environments, interact with penguins and huskies, and take rides in amphibious Hägglund vehicles. The center also houses administration offices, a clothing shop, a post office, and a travel agent.
We weren’t expecting much after reading some of the reviews, but honestly, we ended up having a great time! The staff really made the visit – everyone was super friendly and knew so much. Our Hägglund driver, P. Sherpa, was hilarious, and the 10-minute ride over the obstacle course was such a fun way to see what those beasts can do. The simulated storm was a cool experience, most of the rescued penguins were out and about when we went, and the 4D theatre was a blast. We also had a lovely chat with the person looking after the huskies, which just added to it. Maybe it was partly because we went in with low expectations, but we definitely came away having learnt a lot and really enjoyed ourselves. The staff’s warmth and knowledge made it well worth spending a couple of hours there.

Amazing exhibitions and 4D showcase. You can see cute little penguins and huskies there. The snow storm simulation is fascinating. If you’re going in group tour and have a staff guide that’d be much more awesome. I personally think they can add more stuff inside to make the entire experience more fruitful.

Took advantage of the 50% ticket price for locals because theres no way i would pay the full price of $74 per adult and $49 for children. Website did say to allow two or three hours but if you were by yourself you could easily get through in an hour. Huskys had set slot times through out the day but we forgot to go back. Couple of small penguins in the enclosure, shame the viewing windows were dirty. Storm dome was good. 4D theater was good. Lots of parking available and a cafe on site. No ques getting in on a week day.

While slightly on the pricier side ($199 NZD for a family of 2 adults and 2 children), the International Antarctic Centre is well worth a visit. From the moment you step into the first area (a giant display of video from Antarctica on three walls), you're transported to a different place and time. Learning about polar exploration from such a long time ago was fascinating, and the experiences were amazing. Seeing the penguins and Huskies was great, the 4D movie was a lot of fun, and the Hägglund experience was an absolute blast. Being able to experience a summer Antarctic storm was also well worth the time (despite being freezing!!). I would 100% recommend visiting the Antarctic Centre, it was interactive and educational, and extremely fun. We would definitely go back again.

Wonderful place to bring family and friends! We had an (arctic) blast last time we went, had a lot to do and see with all the activities and shows althroughout. Please note though that rides do have a height requirement which they are a bit strict with for safety reasons. The rest are pretty accessible to the young and young at heart. A bit pricey but you doget a lot of enjoyment and knowledge out of it.

What an excellent experience! Absolutely loved the Hagglund trek thru the different terrains. We got to talk with Heather about all the penguins and their antics. We were there for about 5 hours, went for lunch, great food in the cafe, then back in to see the beautiful huskies, and having Jo talk about his beloved huskies! Highly recommended, very interactive 😍
Tanya B — Google review
They have their own parking space. Online booking is cheaper. Better try the hagglund ride if you are eligible and our rider was superfriendly. Therafter you will get to see a 4D movie , video demonstrations , huskies ,an antarctic storm in a freezing chamber and little penguins. Renovations are on the way and hopefully waiting for an upgrade. There is a good cafe with delicious food and toilets at the facility.
Indunil R — Google review
Not somewhere I would of gone of my own accord, but reccomended by others and it did not disappoint. We spent 2hrs there. Great knowledgeable and chatty staff on the hagglund atv. Lots to learn and interactive stuff for all age levels.

TranzAlpine: Scenic Train Christchurch - Greymouth

Embark on the TranzAlpine train, renowned as one of the most spectacular rail journeys globally. This five-hour expedition spans 139 miles through awe-inspiring South Island landscapes, from the expansive Canterbury Plains to the rugged peaks of the Southern Alps. The route offers breathtaking views of deep gorges and tree-lined rivers. Travelers can opt for a stopover in Arthurs Pass or continue to Greymouth for an immersive experience.
Amazing service offered by everyone right from the ticket counter. It is always recommended to reserve your tickets online as there are limited seats. The topography changes quickly & beautifully in a way we feel some movie is on the screen. The coach was nice and comfortable with very clean & fresh interiors. The seats were spacious and comfortable with a table placed between every set of four seats. During our journey there was some work undergoing at the Arthur pass tunnel. So we had to get down & board a bus and travel on a bus for 15 minutes then get onto the train after the tunnel. It was arranged perfectly well without any kind of confusion. We missed the train journey through the tunnel.
Bindya B — Google review
Great rail journey! Super helpful staff, great seating and very comfortable. There had been heavy rain the day before which meant less snow on the ground, but even so, spectacular scenery. Highly recommend!

If I could, I'd give this scenic train line hundreds of stars. I had to stop off for a bourbon on my way back to the hotel because it just blew my mind. Train staff were so friendly and not one bend of the track disappointed. I took 2000 photos so that hopefully the experience is emblazoned on my mind.

Loved the journey through the snow capped mountains. In carriage monitors show info on regions being passed through. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Great views from the observation cars. Remember warm clothes if venturing into the observation cars as they are open air.

Great trip on the coastal pacific, don't forget to bring snacks though, the cafe car is good but not great , it can get very busy too. The scenery is great, a must do for train enthusiasts or anyone wanting a relaxing way to see the island and coast.

This very definitely a "bucket list" trip. Outstanding scenery and if you're able to afford to do part or all of your trip in the dining car...then you're in for an absolute treat. Wonderful food, wine and beers to enjoy and exceptional service. Recommended.

I travelled to NZ to do both the TranzAlpine and the Coastal Explorer and I have to say that both of these didn't disapoint. Check in was on point and staff were friendly and helpful. Train itself is very modern with large glass windows, seats are very comfortable and clean. The buffet car is very well stocked and everything is reasonably priced 👍👍. I enjoyed the open air carage at the end of the train where you can feel the freshness as the train climbs through the mountains, this also provides alot of beautiful senic photo opertunitys. I believe that train travel is one of the best ways to see the country side and if you have the opportunity to add this to your travels please do it as you won't regret it.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens, established in 1863, are located in a 21-hectare space next to the Avon River. The gardens feature native and exotic plants outdoors and in several conservatories. Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy different blooms such as cherry blossoms in September, roses in November, colorful hydrangeas in March, and orchids in June.
Beautifully presented gardens with a lovely cafe next to the information centre which also has a gift shop. There is also a wonderful playground with a pool in the summer for the young ones. When we went in Sept 25, the Cuningham House (tropical conservatory) was currently closed for heritage restoration. Highly recommend visiting. Please note it is pay parking.
Lisa — Google review
A truly amazing space! More than just gardens, this is a living ecosystem where you can relax among ancient trees and observe wildlife up close. Depending on the season, you might see young animals near the cafe. The nearby stream is teeming with life like trout and eels, and the bird watching for native species is fantastic. A wonderfully peaceful and inspiring experience.

Really loved this place! Peaceful, tranquil and gorgeous in the spring sunshine. Wished I could have seen it a few weeks earlier as well as I love daffodils but then again the roses weren’t quite out but … the azalea and rhododendron were. So not at all disappointed. Just means I’ll have to visit again!!! Definitely worth a visit it two and walkable from the city centre.
Alison O — Google review
I hadn't visited the gardens in several years and with this visit was pleasantly surprised how wonderful they were. Although I didn't have time to walk around the whole area the parts we did visit looked beautiful, although my partner who is a keen gardener was surprised to see a fair number of weeds, especially in the border gardens. It was a fine day and it was obvious that the gardens are popular with locals and tourists alike. The Peace Train was in action and was filled each time we saw it. we had lunch at the cafe and, despite the crowds, service was quick and the food good. Overall a great experience and I'd recommend a visit to both gardeners and non gardeners alike.

We visited in spring time when the flowers were almost in full bloom. A variety of plants with a number that having travelled from the UK we had not seen before. It’s lovely place to spend an hour to two wandering around. There is an info centre, cafe and shop too. A must do if visiting the city.

One of Ōtautahi/Christchurch's taonga ... a must see for visitors and a beloved place for locals to walk, canoe and picnic. World Peace Bell area is beautiful; Ilex Cafe very nice - though often busy. Carparking off Armagh St Bridge and also off Riccarton Road. ((Photos are World Peace Bell on Parihaka Day 5-Nov-25)

Free to enter. Car parks are present but can be busy. Flat path and very easy to walk. Just a few blocks away from the CBD / Cathedral Square. This is the one the last devastating earthquake could not take away from gorgeous Christchurch. It is connected to surrounding green area and is located in the middle. Streams with clear water flows where people do kayaking. Also there is wide, flat green lawn areas where people could have picnic and there is a mini train for kids. It is a place where people of any age could go and stroll, get fresh air and let busy thoughts that drives us busy go away for a while. There are a few car parks around but not too big for the potential visitors of good Suny weekend. The CBD is now different after the earthquake. I am so happy there is something so beautiful remains!
2afarmer2 — Google review
I visited the Christchurch Botanic Gardens in the morning, and it was such a peaceful and refreshing experience. The sunlight made the flowers look even more beautiful — especially the roses, which were vibrant and full of color. I also enjoyed watching the birds wandering around the lawns, adding a calm and lively touch to the walk.

Nestled in the heart of Christchurch, the Canterbury Museum is a treasure trove that invites visitors to delve into the rich tapestry of New Zealand's cultural and natural history. With over 2.3 million artifacts, this venerable institution showcases an impressive array of exhibitions ranging from Maori heritage to Antarctic exploration.
Alright, check this out! There's this seriously cool, full-size wharenui that's popping up in Canterbury! Get this – it's not made of wood, but totally crocheted by hand using get this... FIVE THOUSAND balls of super bright, colorful yarn! It's already been blowing minds all over New Zealand, and now it's our turn, Cantabrians! You gotta see this awesome mix of classic Māori carving vibes but done up in neon wool. It's pretty epic!

This museum is a lovely place with excellent service. However, it is currently undergoing renovations and will not reopen until 2027 or 2029—I can’t recall the exact year. The exhibits feature incredibly detailed and unique pieces, especially for those who appreciate pottery. While it might not be worth a dedicated trip if you’re not a fan of this art form, its central location makes it convenient to visit if you’re nearby. Overall, it’s worth a look when it reopens.
Annie Y — Google review
Considering it is a pop up while the museum is under renovation this museum was a good visit. The staff were really helpful. We enjoyed it. My grandson loved the meteor!
Linda H — Google review
Usually we are not really into museums but when we visited in the beginning of February 25 we had a really good time walking through the exhibitions (especially the Wharenui Harikoa, because it included light into the art as well) 🥰 Beside the entrance we even had the opportunity to make pompoms at a little creative area, so I would definitely recommend a visit 😊
Daniela C — Google review
Some old favourites on display and then the other part dedicated to the the docudrama of New Zealand's 19th century past. Free entry. Combine with a visit to the Art museum on the other side of the block.
B. G — Google review
Small but well organized museum, free admission, definitely worth a short 20 minute visit. We arrived about 30 to 40 minutes before closing, the staff welcomed us anyway the moment we stepped in. 5⭐ for the great customer service.
Jo L — Google review
Seems it is currently being renovated, currently a small exhibition is available on the first floor. Nice descriptions, half of the space was pottery when I was there, the other half was mostly unrelated to NZ, such as small display of Roald Amundsens Antarctic expedition, a piece of meteorite from the US, African animals and so on, would have loved some more Māori or NZ related things. Granted I read fast, but having read almost everything, I finished seeing everything after half an hour. Free entrance but they would like a donation. They recommend 5 NZD, and you can choose eftpos donation of 5, 10, 15 or 20 NZD, I had a hard time since I just wanted to drop 2 dollars but it seemed so petty so I just didn’t. Didn’t feel it was 5 dollars worth, would have donated more if the exhibition was fully open and larger and not mainly pottery haha. The staff was super friendly tho!

The Cardboard Cathedral, also known as the Transitional Cathedral, was built as an interim replacement for a church damaged in a 2011 earthquake. Located near the severely-damaged Christ Church Cathedral, it has become a symbol of Christchurch's resilience and rebuilding efforts. Designed by architect Shigeru Ban, this innovative structure is made of cardboard tubes, polycarbon roofing, and shipping container walls.
What a beautiful church. I felt lucky to have the chance to visit. It’s free to enter, and the most impressive part is that the main structure is made of cardboard tubes — really amazing.

We visited in early October , nice and unique church. There was a singing choir and service going on so we attended it. Made some donations , hope it goes to help in the rebuilding of the church building funds. Nice and interesting building structure.

Popped in while exploring Christchurch and was honestly impressed — simple but stunning. Love how they turned something so unusual into a powerful symbol after the earthquake. It was worth a quick visit! It’s not huge, but the architecture is awesome, and there’s a lot of meaning behind it. Nice quiet place to just sit and take it in for a bit. Didn’t expect to be so moved by a cardboard building! It's modern, clever, and surprisingly warm inside. It's definitely a must-see if you're in the area. Closing time is 4pm
Jimmy J — Google review
The cardboard cathedral is a temporary home for the Anglican community of Christchurch since the original cathedral was badly damaged in the 2011 earthquake. It is made of recyclable materials. It is now dwarved by the new stadium.
Steve W — Google review
Interesting Cathedral - built as an interim replacement of the Christchurch cathedral damaged in Earthquake. Gets it name from the cardboard tubes used for the walls and roof. Interiors looks pretty simple (viewed from outside, couldn't enter the church as it was closed). Stain glass on the facade looks nice.

The Christchurch Gondola is a must-visit attraction offering breathtaking panoramic views of the cityscape, Port Hills, Lyttleton Harbour, and the Southern Alps. This iconic mountain cable car takes visitors on an 862-meter-long ride from Heathcote Valley to the Summit Station atop Mount Cavendish. At the summit, guests can enjoy refreshments at the Red Rock Cafe or explore historical exhibits in the Time Tunnel.
This spot offers stunning views not only of Christchurch, but also of Lyttelton Harbour. On a clear day, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. While the gondola ticket may feel a bit pricey, I truly believe it's worth the cost for the experience — especially if you're visiting as a traveler. Highly recommended.
Sewoon P — Google review
It is a popular tourist attraction in Christchurch. It's 1,000 metres (1,100 yd) in length, and from the summit it is possible to see across the city of Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps in the north and west, and down into Lyttelton Harbour and Banks Peninsula in the south and east. You can get here by car (about 20 mins drive) and park free at the base station. You can also use public transport to get here. It takes about 20 minutes to get up to the top station. There you will find a restaurant, walking tracks, views of the city, toilets. Very popular place, lots of tourists and locals. Level terrain around the stations though there are stairs at places. Wear comfy shoes, take water, wear hat, sunscreen. Great place for photography.
S V — Google review
A short Gondola ride up to the top of Mnt Cavendish, a great outlook over the city and a view of some sheep in the paddocks below, but it was the view at the top that looks towards Lyttleton Harbour and the city is spectacular! Very smooth ride and not really that high off ground,(I still wouldn't want to fall out, though), but within reach of some with height fears.
Paul N — Google review
Amazing experience, a must do!! The views of Christchurch & Lyttelton are breathtaking!!! Just do it! You can walk around the viewing platform & out to the edge of the hill (with the sheep) see the paragliders take off & soar the skies. Have a coffee beer or bite to eat at the cafe . The Gondola staff are great & it’s a fun experience. Catch the #8 bus for $4 from Christchurch or uber is approximately $24
Kate S — Google review
I could’ve spent the entire day at the summit. Buying a ticket and the price is quite reasonable given the end viewpoints the number of walking trails. Definitely suggest going on a weekday. I visited on a Monday and there was no queue. Keep an eye out for the lamb along the hillside if visiting during lambing season, an adorable bonus!
Lina B — Google review
Better than expected, view is dope, ride is great, super steep. If you have like 6 hours in Christchurch, this is a good 2 hrs. Accessible by bus if you don’t have a car.
Brian W — Google review
Nice place to see the views over the city. Poorly marked trails if you want to hike around at the top. Food was available at the café on top to grab a snack. Pleasant staff. It was interesting to see where the sheep were hanging out in the rocks in the shade.

Families enjoy exploring both the cave and climbing on top, while nearby amenities like beaches, food places, and ice cream shops make it a great destination for all ages.
We had a magical sunrise experience at Cave Rock this morning! The colors of the sky and ocean meeting were breathtaking, and the sound of the waves was so peaceful. The shellfish hanging on rocks was a stunning view. It was the perfect way to start Waitangi Day.

Cave Rock / Tuawera is beautiful any time of day, but at night it’s something else. The whole area takes on a calm, almost magical feel. The cross lit up above the beach is such a cool sight—it kind of glows over the water and makes the whole scene feel peaceful and special. My visit to the Giants House made for a happy day for me, and surprisingly my husband. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and found it inspiring. I’m a mosaic artist and horticulturist and my husband is now supportive of my creating mosaic pathways and seating areas around our property. We loved Josie Martin’s peaceful gardens and beautiful quirky creations. So much creative and happy energy in the exceptionally designed, healthy and colorful gardens. We enjoyed visiting the gallery as well. The mosaics and gardens are even more impressive than the pics show. Josie’s gardens and art are truly a treasure no one should miss.

Beautiful museum about the history of NZ (both Maori and Colonial). Vast collection of Maori exhibits as well as from the colonial period. We've spent over 3 hours there and didn't even read everything, it's that huge. The entrance fee is very low for what it has on offer. The staff is also very knowledgefull and kind. Beautiful drive there too, so definitly worth the trip from Christchurch! For me an absolut must see during a NZ trip.

This museum houses a truly impressive collection of Maori artifacts, from all parts of New Zealand. The Waka collection is among the best in New Zealand. Items are carefully displayed and labels give a clear explanation of significance and purpose. The colonial section is well set out, showing a wide range of items across the life of colonial New Zealanders. The cottages and other buildings are well maintained and have a sense that the owners and workers have just stepped out for a moment The museum is well worth a visit.

Amazing museum seemingly tucked away in the back of beyond. Highly recommended, in fact worth going out of your way to make the stop.
