Tours
Bike It Now! in Clyde offers excellent service for those interested in the Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail. They can assist with arranging shuttle times and pickups for the reverse ride from Clyde to Cromwell, taking advantage of the wind and less aggressive egress. The trail offers beautiful views and cantilevered sections hugging the mountain. Riders can expect a time of around 3 hours and 20 minutes.
We're both 70+ Aussie & hadn't ridden a bike in over 25 years so were a tad apprehensive about our ability to complete the challenges posed by a 4 day e-bike trip alongside our daughter, son-in-law and 8 years old grandson! Anyway we did a half day practice on our home turf a couple of weeks before departure and felt positive. Claire Seaton at BIN made all the bookings for us and did an excellent job, and didn't mind fielding all my questions. The BIN staff that briefed us at Clyde were equally good and factored in my crook back! So off we went and yes the D.S.I. (Derriere Soreness Index) on Day 1 was at a 'barely noticeable' score of 2 which on Day 2 rose upto a 5 - "ooh, that's tender" despite wearing the very stylish padded cycle pants! But on the longest day covering close on 50kms from Wedderburn to Hyde we pulled out of our cyclist's armoury some Pommie made stuff called "Velochampion Chamois Cream" also referred to by the Kiwis as "Butt Butter" and you spread this stuff on your derriere before you put on your stylish padded cycle pants. Well folks don't knock it til you try it - as much to our surprise our D.S.I. factor dropped a smidge to about 4! Was it Value For Money? - yep it sure was as the equipment that BIN supply was top notch and the package included 3 nights Bed & breakfast and they had thought pretty much everything for our trip, so I give them a 10/10

Absolutely have to do the Lake Dunstan trail when visiting the Otago Region! All the staff were fantastic at Bike It Now from organising our ride, setting up our bikes and were so friendly and knowledgeable! Add it to your to do list when visiting the beautiful towns of Clyde/Cromwell

Im usually not big on tours but fletch and her team have convinced me. It was so much more fun doing it with them, they are all delightful and the locals they work with for accommodation and food are also amazing. We loved it. Will book with them again.

My fiancé and I had an amazing experience with Bike It Now. Their attention to detail was great and we felt reassured the whole time! We did the Otago Rail Trail over 4 days, 3 nights (on e-bikes) and it was such a pleasant experience, we had lots of time to stop along the way. We can't wait to book in for the remaining trails. Thanks bike it now team!

Did the Otago Rail Trail with Bike It Now – absolutely brilliant experience! Everything was so well organised, from luxury accommodation to dinner bookings and luggage transfers. The team were incredibly informative and made the whole journey seamless — all we had to think about was pedalling, enjoying the food, and sampling some great Otago wines. Created amazing memories along the way. 100% recommended! 🚴‍♀️🍷

I had a great experience doing the Lake Dunstan cycle trail with Bike it Now. The mountain bike I hired was perfect for the trail, and fitted with everything I needed. The pre- departure talk was very informative and made me feel more confident about tackling the ride. I caught their shuttle to Cromwell and gained a lot of local knowledge along the way from John the driver. The trail is great.

Absolutely awesome!! Learnt so much!! And got to see so much I didn't even know was there. Lawrence was bloody awesome 👌 Highly recommend 👌

I was initially hesitant at booking this Roxburgh Gorge cycle transfer, but was encouraged by a fellow traveller who really rated it, and also I figure my life is worth the cost as the alternative way to cycle through is to ride on the main road! The skipper Simone was lovely and friendly and took great care with loading and unloading my bike. She also was very patient with the less mobile passengers who took a bit of time to get unloaded. Lawrence was super responsive on the comms, even when I submitted my booking at short notice and late at night. Overall this tour company is highly recommend as the Roxburgh Gorge trail is beautiful and the jet boat transfer makes the day a lot of fun especially on a hot day!
Yvonne H — Google review
We had the most wonderful time with the perfect balance of history, awesome views and squeals of delight with the jet boat option. We cannot recommend this strongly enough. If you are in the Alexandra area, you must treat yourself to this tour. Side note, it was winter for us and the winter trees lining the river were just stunning. Thank you for such a wonderful time, shaping the tour to meet the needs of all of us. First Class
Simon M — Google review
Lawrence our guide was a wealth of interesting information and quite a character. His portrayal of the gold rush years was fascinating. The boat was good, service excellent and the fresh muffins and tea were a welcome treat after scrambling about the old mining settlements. Highly recommended.
John E — Google review
An outstanding service and great way to see some amazing gold mining history. Simone our boat driver was professional, informative and humorous. I totally recommend using this service. You need this service to be able to do both sections of the Roxburgh Gorge bike trail and it is absolutely worth the cost.
Simon I — Google review
A fantastic way and service to see the Beautiful and Outstanding Roxborough Gorge. Lawrence was our skipper and guide full of interesting facts, fun and safe for ourselves and our bikes to be transferred to the next leg of our cycle ride. This was a big highlight of our trip in the South. Loved it so much, thoroughly recommend 👌
Cat M — Google review
Absolutely brilliant! Lovely, friendly and informative service between Doctors Point and Shingles Creek

Excellent bike shuttle service on the Roxburgh Gorge Trail plus fantastic commentary on the gold mining history as a bonus. Thanks Laurence, it was one of our highlights.

Christine is very friendly and accommodating. I camped here in my tent and really appreciated how well cared for and clean the shared facilities were, and how safe, peaceful and quiet it was. Really nice showers. The gardens are beautiful and I enjoyed being able to walk along the river into town. Was only planning to stay two nights but ended up staying three as it is such a nice spot. Would definitely recommend it!
Kim W — Google review
We have stayed at multiple top 10 parks during our 3 week travels and this is by far our favourite. Christine was super friendly and very helpful with any questions we had. The park is extremely well kept and very very clean. Shower/toilet ensuite blocks are very neat and tidy, shower pressure is so good too. The camp kitchen was also very clean, and it didn’t have that yucky camp kitchen smell that many do have. It was an all around great stay for us, we highly recommend staying here.
J — Google review
We had a wonderful stay at the Roxburgh Top 10 holiday park. I had booked the wrong date for our stay (out by a week!) and Christine was super helpful, changing our booking and finding us somewhere indoors to stay, as the forecast was for thunderstorms (and it turned out to be intense!). The cottage was super cute and comfortable and the setting was lovely. Highly recommend!
Marion R — Google review
Great park and facilities upgraded and modern. If coming off the cycle trail from the river using the back entrance be aware there is as VERY steep slope up to the camp with a loose gravel surface, the road is better. A very peaceful location.
RMW — Google review
Beautiful gardens. Very quiet site. Emplacement was jolly big. Wished we had booked more than one night in order to explore the area. Didn't use the showers which are a two dollar charge.
Stephen P — Google review
Really enjoyed our stay in one of the cottages. Perfectly set up with everything you need. Immaculate and cosy. Great operators, very thoughtful, and easy to communicate with.
Brandon W — Google review
Well what a find, not a big brash Top10 park & probably now my favourite. I stayed in my sleeper van and didn’t require power hook up. Very reasonably priced, grounds immaculate, facilities practical & very clean, Christine the owner was great. Close to the cycle trail, track down to the river, short walk or ride into town.
Judy D — Google review
This is an absolutely delightful spot. The grounds were beautifully maintained and there is so much for the kids to do - huge playground, games, bikes, places to explore. We stayed in a cabin and it was very spacious, comfortable and welcoming - honestly more homely and enjoyable than many hotels I've stayed in! Highly recommend, look forward to coming back for a longer stay in future.

Once was enough - a fabulous experience once!!! Cycling the Dunstan Trail was more challenging than I thought it would be .. hairpin turns were wicked. Probably it was scary for me for these reasons: 1) I’d never ever ridden trails as close to ‘the edge’ as these - on the left side nearest the drop off. 2) It was my first time on an E-bike 3) The narrow trail/path with loose gravel was new to me - I am used to bike trails or country side roads in Canada. It took me until the last third of the trail I began to feel comfortable shifting the gears on the right handle bar as well as the E-speed on the left. Thankfully I opted for an E-bike… it would have been impossible for me to ride on a regular bike! Not so for the younger stronger set! All that said, I am thrilled to have done the Dunstan - a miracle with tremendous long lasting memories!!’ Stunning vistas with stops along the way up and down with equal challenge ability! Thank you for making the trip possible. Shebikeshebikes is a terrific company with caring and competent friendly folks. Mji
Maureen F — Google review
Great service from Shebikeshebikes meant we had a great day on the trail. We were a really mixed group in terms of experience and ability, but electric bikes and the crew's recommendation for what trail to ride meant we all had a fabulous time. Thanks for the care you took making sure we had what we needed. Ngā mihi!
Sarah J — Google review
This was my first taste of Otago trails. Staying at Ranfurly, I chose to ride what was recommended to be the best section of the Otago Rail Trail, ie Omakau to Ranfurly. Shebikeshebikes were able to shuttle me and my ebike to Omakau from where I was able to cycle the trail back to the motor camp at Ranfurly. Shebikeshebikes provided the perfect service; a very enjoyable drive with a lovely driver and at a remarkably reasonable cost. P.S. Two days later I used Shebikeshebikes to shuttle me and my bike from Clyde to Cromwell so I could ride the amazing Lake Dunstan Trail back to Alexandra Holiday Park. Again the shuttle service was superb.
Gary D — Google review
Amazing experience with shebikeshebikes on the Otago Rail Trail. Service was great before the trip, prompt and clear communication, and on the trip. Bikes worked well, shuttle bus and luggage transport was great. Suggested accommodation on the trail was also wonderful. Thanks for a great experience!
Marryam L — Google review
Very satisfied repeat customers having biked both Clutha Gold and Otago Central Rail Trail with Shebikeshebikes. Great service, very comfortable bikes, and some wonderful accomodation options we never would have found by ourselves..
Lisa M — Google review
Hired an E bike for my lovely wife to do a portion of the rail trail. Really easy to deal with, plenty of information. They even have an after hours return option. Nice bike that was well maintained. No chance of keeping up with her on my 'normal' bike. Perfect way to see the rail trail.

Nestled in the charming settlement of Tuapeka Mouth, just a short 25-minute drive from Lawrence, lies the fascinating Tuapeka Mouth Ferry. This unique ferry service has been delighting visitors since 1896, offering a nostalgic way to cross the Clutha Mata-au River on a floating platform that accommodates vehicles. The ferry operates without engines, relying solely on water flow for its movement—an experience that truly takes you back in time.
Wow, just wow. All run on water flow only

A piece of living history & a joy to cross the Clutha on the punt. Postcards, info boards & the skippers knowledge round out the experience

Self-Guided Tours & Rentals
The Central Cycle Trails in the South Island of New Zealand offer a variety of mountain biking experiences suitable for different fitness levels. The trails provide options for tailored packages, including accommodation and bike rentals, making it convenient for visitors to simply show up and start riding. With stunning landscapes and well-planned routes, such as the Otago Central Rail Trail, cyclists can enjoy a memorable journey through the high country terrain.
We loved our 5 day cycle tour of the Otago rail trail booked through Cycle Surgery. The ebikes were top notch, comfortable and easy to use. The accommodation was fantastic, including historic buildings, and we even had dinner bookings and transfers to restaurants each night. It was a pleasure to leave our bags each morning, zoom off on our bikes, and find our bags waiting for us at the next stop. The staff were all fun, chatty and interesting. We found the app really useful for our itinerary (including lunch recommendations) and for up to date information about the trail and conditions. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others, and in fact already have.
Andrea J — Google review
Superb hospitality from Donna, saved my day. Sadly I was just passing by Middlemarch, but they seem to have a wealth of history and strong community. Might as well spend a couple of nights there next time around.
Vinicius T — Google review
I can’t say enough about this team. From our initial booking and having a tailor made package for the four of us which suited our needs and budget. We opted for a more expensive package which included the Taieri Railway trip to Middlemarch to start the track and great accomodation for 3 nights from the options offered us. You choose what you want and pay accordingly which suited us fine. Loved the ability of just turning up on day 1 and being able to ride with bikes already sorted and accomodation already prebooked. As we had just come off 3 days on the Routeburn Track we also had the problem of getting all or packs and gear from accommodation to accomodation each night but that was no problem to Cycle Surgery and it arrived at each destination before us each day. From our first contact with them all our queries were answered and promptly- nothing was too hard and if we do the trail again we would use them again. On the completion of the trail and getting transported back to Queenstown we got an excellent commentary from Lonnie about places of interest along the way and showed the value of staff who are engaged with their work as opposed to just turning up each day. I researched service providers on Google before booking and also spoke with friends who had done the Rail Trail and used Cycle Surgery before and went with them. So glad we did and after our experience with them and the comprehensive package and services they offer we highly recommend them.

A perfect trip well planned by Cycle Surgery.I had the idea for a surprise getaway culminating in a romantic proposal but didn't know where to start. One email to Pip at Cycle Surgery and she had it all sorted.3 beautiful and very different nights accommodation.Fantastic meal bookings.Car transfer. The most comfortable bikes we have ever ridden. And the special touch of organizing Champagne and Flowers to be set up in our Accommodation. Thanks to Pip and the team.It was such a pleasure to have people that are so passionate about what they do help us with our special weekend.
Matthew H — Google review
Every aspect of the service from Cycle Surgery was excellent from start (in 2019 for a March 2020 trip that got called off) to finish (rebooked for Feb 2021 and in the opposite direction - and a marvellous experience). We would unreservedly recommend them - whether you are an experienced cyclist or a newbie. The Rail Trail is wonderful, we will do it again hopefully and if we do we will be on the email to Pip at Cycle Surgery
Alison P — Google review
4 day ride was perfect, a group of 13 people was so much fun and great weather with spectacular views. Cycle Surgery provided awesome bikes and fantastic backup, we had one tyre blow out and they fixed it with in 1/2hr. Amazing
Ty H — Google review
Unfortunately for us, we didn't book our hire bikes and rail trail tour through Cycle Surgery, otherwise things may have been a bit smoother! We did, however, book a transfer from Dunedin to Middlemarch (with John - what a great guy) to start the rail trail and a jet boat ride out of Alexandra with Lawrence! Lucky we did, as our trip was cut short due to flooding and it was Cycle Surgery to the rescue with a scenic trip with Dave from Middlemarch back to Dunedin. Cycle Surgery have great facilities and a huge variety of hire bikes for all levels - they cater for day trips on ebikes, adventures on MTBs, or longer trips for those bike packing! They know all there is to know about getting the most out of the time you have and value your holiday time as much as you do! Their business model is all about your happiness and that is very evident in all our dealings with the staff. When we come back to finish the Roxburgh and Clutha Gold trails, we will definitely be booking through Cycle Surgery!
Claire B — Google review
Would highly recommend booking your rail trail adventure with Cycle Surgery. My husband and I booked this last year and did the trail April 2019. Right from the first email, they responded quickly and with a wonderful itinerary, which included transfers to and from Dunedin. The bikes were fantastic, with no issues on the trail. Accommodation was very good, comfy beds and nice and clean and tidy with lovely continental breakfast provided. It was also great to be booked into places for night meals so you didn't have to worry about where to go. If this adventure is on your bucket list, tick it off, it's a must. Contact Cycle Surgery now! You won't be disappointed

Good for riding start point. Not busy parking spaces. Easy and nice track for family i think. 14km to next parking lot I forgot where was there sorry. And 28 km to hyde. Track is easy and good but not very nice view. Just farms side path.

Sharing with friends was great. The track was in good condition. The tunnels were fun... but I think there should be some kind of reflection on the walls even perhaps a bit of paint .? As to were the actual sides were. .. Otherwise it's all good .. Thank you.

Didn't actually did this track. I went with the trans alphine train from Dunedin and ended here, had a short walk around before heading back. Absolutely a lovely little town, worth it to walk or cycle around. A nice bar/cafe for a snack or beer. On the train ride there are a lot of stunning views, also worth doing.

Sutton Salt Lake is a unique natural wonder located just a short drive from Middlemarch in New Zealand. Visitors can admire water birds, native and exotic plants, and picturesque rock tors while enjoying an easy undulating round trip to the lake. The 3.
Was a hidden gem. Scenic loop walk , pleased we took hats as turned hot 20 mins into the walk. Took us about 1 hour return.

Really worth the effort if you are in the area. 1 hrs walk to lake and really cool rocks, landscape. Kids will love it
Tim T — Google review
A beautiful loop walk around Sutton Salt Lake, 3.5 km on the flat, takes about an hour. stunning landscape of distinctive schist tors and rock pillars. Sutton Salt Lake is New Zealand’s only inland salt lake. It has no outlet, so the lake has concentrated the salts from surrounding soils. Formed over the last 3 million years, the ‘Rock and Pillars’ are a series of folds (steep ranges rolling onwards like an ocean swell), the result of deep local faulting. Some blocks of schist rock remain long after the surrounding rock has eroded away. These ‘tors’ are a feature of the bleak and windswept ridges. Freeze and thaw cycles make it difficult for plants to grow and have left wave-like ridge patterns in the soil. A lens-shaped cloud formation, known locally as the ‘Taieri Pet’, is seen regularly during north-west winds. A highly unusual cloud formation that is found in very few places around the world. The Rock and Pillars have a very flat top with steep slopes on either side, and they lie perpendicular to the prevailing westerly winds. When these “fohn” winds are forced up and over the range it can create a dramatic cloud formation that the locals call “The Taieri Pet.” Meteorologists call it a “lenticular billow cloud.” It can be a single lens-shaped cloud or it can be shaped like a huge stack of pancakes with clear air between the cloud layers. It may seem stationary, but the wind is circulating rapidly through the cloud.

Purakaunui Falls Walk

Scenic spot

The Purakaunui Falls Walk is a short, 15-minute return track that leads to the iconic Purakaunui Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand. The walk is easily accessible from a spacious car park with public toilets and offers a leisurely stroll towards the falls, including a descent down some stairs to reach the viewing platform. The area is known for its lack of mobile signal coverage, making it an ideal spot to disconnect and enjoy nature.
Fairly easy 10 minute walk to the falls but I'd say it may be a bit slippy in the rain. We went on a lovely sunny day and the waterfalls were lovely. I'd imagine even more spectacular after some rain. Highly recommend going here
Daren L — Google review
I have a bad leg and the walk was still doable. Steep stairs in one part, be careful when wet. Vault athrooms at parking. No cost. Road to Owaka is paved, gravel in the other direction at this time. 10 to 15 minute walk to the end.
Todd S — Google review
Purakaunui Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever visited. The walk through the forest to reach it was calm and refreshing, surrounded by tall trees and the sound of birds. The waterfall itself was stunning, with water flowing gracefully over three tiers of rocks. It looked picture-perfect from every angle. The viewing platform made it easy to enjoy the full view and take great photos. The area was clean and well maintained. A peaceful and unforgettable place to visit. A solid 5-star experience.

parking across the road full of space, really easy walk around 10 minutes in the forest, some steps and you will reach the impressive and beautiful waterfalls, relaxing and quiet place

Great walk for families. 15 minutes round trip on a flat gravel path along the river. A few stairs to descend before reaching the waterfall. Can be busy in summer, visit in morning or off season to get the views to yourself. Toilets, picnic area and non potable water in car park

A must stop on any drive through the Catlins. Plenty of parking and toilets, well marked trail through beautiful forest to the falls. Some steps on the way. The falls look like they've been designed - so beautiful, and a prefect viewing platform to see them from. If you love the calming sound of waterfalls, you might like our YouTube channel - Peaceful Viewpoints where you can find the video we filmed here and others from NZ and round the world.

We love to chat with tourist info staff and here we were warmly greeted by Ange, who gave us the rundown on Balclutha as well as our coastal journey. Ange you're an asset to the site team. Loved our visit. The new building is pretty impressive too!

This visitors center was actually amazing. There’s a work space upstairs and has a lot of large windows that can be used to get a view of the river and the houses that are next to it. I got a very Japanese vibe from the whole view. The lady who was working at the information center was incredibly kind and gave me a bunch of information about the Caitlins and some of the surrounding areas. There’s also a cinema in the building as well that plays some movies here and there.

Off chance stopover saw the township sculpture, a modern retro Waka in stainless steel. A park with wooden moa standing on guard, draw you towards the museum entrance. When entering you are greeted by the front desk staff, who are very enthusiastic and cheerful. A quick summary of the displays on offer from pre-european to modern times. Early development of native milling and farming hardship. Tribute to local archeologist who devoted his lifetime in the pursuit of moa discovery. So yes it is worthwhile spending time here.

Ailey V — Google review
I’m giving you zero stars for the management of the wetlands. I use to come to the wetlands frequently when I was younger, and I also knew the founder. I am still shocked at how poorly this resource has been managed. My star rating reflects the poor management which has resulted into this wetlands looking more and more like a farm and less and less like water bird habitat. I don’t know how to express my disappointment enough. It looks like due to poor management no one cares so you are burning an iconic landmark in NZ. Someone needs to pull their finger out and do something before it’s gone for ever! I have the correct wetland obviously, I also mentioned I spent much of my time on it and knew the former owner before this happened.... Ducks Unlimited sold the Sinclair Wetlands about 20 years ago to the Government and it became part of the Treaty Settlement with Nga Tahu .

This wetland is amazing. It is huge! Over 3000000 Sq metres. The original owner was ahead of his time. Could hear the fern birds calling but they are good at hiding amongst the vegetation. There is camping sites available. Very quiet beautiful location.

An environmental gem hidden near Dunedin. Gravel road. The wetlands are being restored and offer a great chance to explore and examine flora and fauna. My two preschoolers and I walked the loop - easy walk and both girls (aged 3 and 4) made it round the 2 hr walk. Keep an eye out for the Department of Conservation Kiwi Guardian post too. Lots of wildlife and information panels. Good toilets. Can't wait to explore this in different weather and seasons.

My last trip to Nugget Point was absolutely amazing. The view from the lighthouse was breathtaking, with the ocean stretching endlessly and waves crashing against the rocks below. The walk to the lighthouse was easy and scenic, surrounded by native plants and bird sounds. I spotted seals resting on the rocks, which made the visit even more special. Olveston Historic Home, located on Royal Terrace in Dunedin, is a well-preserved former merchant home dating back to the early 1900s. The house offers guided tours and serves as a walk-in time capsule, providing visitors with a glimpse into New Zealand's European-influenced history during that era. Built by local philanthropist David Theomin, the house features a striking facade designed by English architect Sir George Ernest.
We are so glad that we booked the guided tour in Olveston Historic Home - despite our limited time in Dunedin. the house is easy to find and there is ample car parking right in front of the house (free parking for 90 minutes). Alex at the reception was very friendly and welcomed us. Sarah was our guide and what a fantastic tour she did with our small group. It felt as if she was part of the family and the house, the tour was really personal and gave us so many insights in the history of the family, and how it was to live a hundred years ago in a house such as this one. The owners designed every room with so much thought and personal touch, everything is beautiful and carefully selected and composed. It was truly delightful and if you wonder what to do in Dunedin even with a short one day stay as we had, do book the guided tour in Olveston Historic House you will not regret it. Highly recommended.
Julia B — Google review
I give this place a 5 star. Only in Dunedin for 3 days but have had this on the bucket list for some time. I booked a guided tour and our guide was a lovely lady named Chris. The history around this house and the Olveston family was very interesting and engaging. The historical information was quite interesting yet a little sad considering the lifespan of the family members. If you have some spare time make sure you book a guide here as I am positive you won’t be disappointed. The gardens are also a pleasure to walk through.

A must see for those with an interest in history and a rare chance to a see a home that’s kept as it was when it was given to the city. You’ll feel like you are walking into a time capsule as almost all the items in the home, including the vast art collection and even down to the fly swatter hanging in the kitchen, have been left as the original owners had it. In addition to this we had an extremely knowledgeable tour guide who told us all about the history of the family and also about the items in the home. We could tell she was passionate about the home and its history which really made the tour that much more memorable and fun! The intention with which the home was designed by the owners it’s also incredibly interesting and makes you think how you would design your own home. It’s truly a beautiful and unique location and well worth adding to your list of to do’s in Dunedin!

I love the tour and enjoyed the guide tuor. I was interested in the house where a merchant lived. I found that we could see something beautiful and pictures which he bought from Asian countries including Japan and other European countries. I’m so impressed because I’m a Japanese person. 👍 Like my review! The tour and tasting was worth it ... especially with Carlos as your tour guide. The cost of the tour was $45 which I initially thought was pricey until at the end. The tour is 45 minutes which was too short for a nerd like me but too long for those who just wanted the tastings. Once you get to the tastings, make sure you know what you want because they may have to close up at the end. I tasted all 10 they had to offer and was even provided a paper and pen for my notes. Yes, I'm one of those people who really appreciates a good damn beer. My experience was only elevated thanks to Carlos including his kindness, knowledge, and sense of humor. Overall, I would recommend it to friends and family! Make sure to not drive home right away since you'll enjoy your time.

We had an amazing tour with Carlos. From start to finish he was patient, never rushed us through and was thoroughly explanatory. If your into history and beer then this is a fantastic tour for you. From how it all started to now was a great insight to the legendary crafted beer we still drink today. Then at the end of the tour you get to taste some or all of the 9 beers + 1 apple cider which we tasted all 😄. Great value for money and highly recommended.

A really engaging and informative tour from start to finish. Our guide, Marty, made the whole experience memorable with his witty explanations, friendly personality and impressive knowledge of the entire process. He took the time to answer every question in detail, no matter how small. The pace of the tour was just right, and we felt we learned a lot without ever feeling rushed. The tasting at the end was a perfect way to wrap things up, giving us a chance to appreciate everything we’d just learned. Overall, a fantastic experience that we’d happily recommend to anyone.

Tūhura Otago Museum in Dunedin, New Zealand offers a diverse range of cultural and natural history exhibits. Visitors can explore hands-on science areas, a planetarium, and a butterfly house. The museum is home to rare collections of natural specimens and human artifacts from various Pacific cultures. Permanent exhibitions include Tangata Whenua showcasing Southern Maori artifacts, as well as a maritime gallery featuring a massive Fin Whale skeleton and ship models.
Fantastic museum. The free to look around areas are fabulous and took around 1.5 hours for a good look through, but you could easily spend 2-3 hours looking at more detail and interacting with the displays. We went to specifically look at the Relics display which is a temporary display that is there until the 27 April 2025. It was stunning, tickets required to this area. Well worth a visit. There is also a science and tropical area with 100’s of butterflies 🦋. It’s a brilliant experience. Well worth it. Wheelchair friendly for 90% of the areas. Sitting areas around the museum, so if you get tired easily this is great. Clean toilets. Cafe and shop there too. We didn’t use these services this time.

Our kids enjoyed the science centre, spent a fair bit of time here, the planetarium was ok would've more liked to hear about facts of the solar system and see more planets than just the astrology constellations. Butterfly house was nice with some birds also. Most I've paid for a museum before.

Was a lovely museum and spent a good 3 hours here, you definitely need to pay if you have kids to get into the science area and butterflies as they were the. Ist interesting areas. We paid $81 for our family to get into that and also the planetarium as well. I wouldn’t say it was worth it for that amount and wouldn’t go again because of the price but worth it if you want to tick it off the list or need something to do indoors. Also has a cafe which was great.

I recently visited the Tuhura Otago Museum and was thoroughly impressed by the wide range of exhibits on display. One of the standout attractions is the 2,500-year-old Egyptian mummy, which is astonishing to see in person. The museum's ship model display is also quite remarkable. Among the impressive collection, I was delighted to find a model of the ship my ancestors arrived on in 1930. The museum also features a LEGO display, which looks like a lot of fun, but it requires a separate ticket that I didn't purchase. Another highlight of the museum is the Wildlife Attic, where they have a variety of taxidermy animals from all over the world. It was fascinating to see such a diverse collection. Overall, I had a wonderful time exploring the exhibits, and the friendly staff made the experience even better. I highly recommend a visit to the Otago Museum for anyone interested in history, wildlife, and unique displays.

One of my favourite museums in New Zealand! I haven't visited since I was a kid in over a decade so it looked completely different from what I remembered. I learned so much about Dunedin's rich history, and the artifacts were cool too! Who would've thought a Lime scooter would end up in a museum?

👍 Like my review! We stumbled upon the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin, New Zealand upon our arrival in the area. We didn't realize it was free relying on donations but our surprise was how massive it was. We really enjoyed the history from the beginning with the Maori but also highlighting how Dunedin is such an important hub in New Zealand. I would say that we were there for over 1.5 hours and there was a lot to read, consume, and enjoy. My favorite portion of the museum was seeing several vehicles and cable cars preserved! We would definitely recommend to our family and friends.
John V — Google review
I did not plan to visit this museum. I had finished my sightseeing and was headed to my hotel. As I was passing by, I realized the museum was open, so I stopped in. The building is very modern and the exhibits are well ordered. The museum details the history of the first settlers to arrive in Dunedin through to the present day. It was fun to hear the music, see the types of clothes, furniture, and cars change throughout the years. Dunedin is a melting pot of many kinds of people. I especially enjoyed listening to accounts from sections called "our voices" and the room filled with photos of the first settlers. I spent about an hour in the museum and I wish I had more time. I highly recommend it. This museum has free entry. On this day, the museum had extended hours in the gift shop. They were playing Christmas music, which was nice.

Lan Yuan, Dunedin Chinese Garden is a classic representation of a traditional Chinese landscape painting. It was created to honor the city's Chinese heritage and its sister city relationship with Shanghai. The garden features a picturesque lake, a grand archway, and ever-changing seasonal vistas that offer unexpected corners to explore. Visitors can enjoy an audio tour, relax in the tea house, bring a picnic, or engage in puzzles and games while soaking up the tranquility of this authentic Southern Hemisphere gem.
An amazing place to visit. It’s very tranquil with lots of plants to see. You can see a lot of work has gone in to the construction of the gardens. There are plenty of quiet places to sit and admire with a very informative history wall as you head to the exit. Well worth the visit

Very beautiful and calm place to spend some time relaxing surrounded by plants. It's not very big but it's a nice way to spend marine 40 minutes to an hour. There are plants native to China, a waterfall and a big pond with ducks and water lillys. There's a restroom and a gift shop too. There are some sitting areas as well.

Lovely morning spent at the gardens, such a beautiful place, tranquil and oh so pretty. We had tea at the end and played checkers nice start to a big day in Dunedin. Recommended.

Serene, relaxing, great place to not feel that you're in downtown Dunedin. Beautiful gardens, paths and quiet places to sit.

Absolutely beautiful gardens!! They are maintained very well, have a great selection of sceneries, and have plaques spread across the site to learn more about the garden. I really loved the blend of using rocks and water along with greenery for the garden, it created a really tranquil atmosphere despite being so close to the city centre. Parking is nearby and a good almost-central location. Admission fee was reasonable, staff were super lovely and answered all my questions, and the gift shop was quaint but cute. I will definitely come back in the future, thank you again!!

A peaceful and beautifully designed spot right in the heart of Dunedin. Lan Yuan offers an authentic glimpse into classical Chinese architecture and culture, with its tranquil ponds, intricate stonework, and lush gardens. You can easily spend an hour or two here just soaking in the calm atmosphere. It’s clear a lot of thought and care went into its creation – a great place for photos, quiet reflection, or learning a bit about Chinese heritage in New Zealand. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the city!

A peaceful and beautiful garden in Dunedin. Feels like a little piece of China — perfect for a quiet walk and lovely photos.

A stunning traditional Chinese garden and it every turn a perfect photo opportunity. I ended up taking hundreds of photos of this beautiful garden and it was well worth the small entry fee. It is amazing how quiet and peaceful it is within the garden even though you ride in the city next to the train station. We felt transported to a different world and really enjoyed learning about the Chinese heritage of Otago. The most fascinating fact we learned was of the custom-designed roof tiles I think they were about 38,000 of them that were made in China with a unique pattern to these gardens and if each individual tile was laid side-by-side they would stretch from Dunedin to Christchurch. Worth noting that dogs are not allowed, we couldn’t find this information anywhere online before going so thought best to add into our review here as it may help someone else.

Dunedin Botanic Garden, established in 1863 as the first of its kind in New Zealand, spans 28 hectares and is home to over 6,800 plant species. The lower gardens boast an Edwardian Winter Garden glasshouse with tropical plants and a serene Japanese Garden with a bamboo grove. Even during winter, the garden offers beautiful sights such as the flowering Himalayan daphne and a dedicated section for winter and spring flowers.
Big range of variety of gardens and plants. Nice walk to the aviary to see heaps of kākā and parrots. Duck feeding is available near the information center. Lots of other birds to watch around the gardens. Lots of street parking.

Such a wonderful place to visit. So many things to offer for young and old. You have to visit all the areas, the herb circle, playground feeding the ducks was hilarious with our kids. We came back again to explore more and see the aviary which was awesome, the birds are hilarious and beautiful.

Biggest botanic garden I've ever seen! It's quite the climb, but go up to the aviary. They have all sorts of wonderful birds that come close to look at you (especially when you wear a bright coat). They have all sorts of gardens, but the roses are my favourite!! Don't skip this part of Dunedin

Beautiful place to visit. Well thought out and impeccably curated and kept. The upper gardens had a wide array of flowers and plants that were very unique to NZ. Delightful! Unfortunately we only got to view the amazing green house from the outside but it looked full to the brim of beautiful greenery!

A beautiful place, with fabulous walks, glasshouse and aviary. In particular was stoked to find some fascinating plant species on sale in their info centre (from their local plants?), the opportunity to feed ducks with bird food for a donation also has a special charm. The 50yo Kea and other talking parrots were also a delight!

The most beautiful public gardens in New Zealand. Definitely worth a visit in any weather.

Went on a cold, windy day, but it's still worth it. Was surrounded by ducks very quickly after picking up some free duck food from the information center. It's definitely worth taking the walk up to the aviary to see the parrots and other birds.

Dunedin Railways offers scenic train trips departing from a beautifully ornate old station. The journey takes passengers through the stunning Otago hinterland, showcasing New Zealand's dramatic scenery and the country's early rail engineering marvels. The trip includes crossing the Taieri Gorge on a high viaduct, passing numerous high bridges and 10 tunnels carved out of hillsides.

Commentary was fabulous, food on the trip was great. Sadly the Dunedin side of the Taireri gorge is pines, gorse, and broom. The river has clearly been disturbed by activity up stream..it was dirty. Nothing I have seen in a NZ mountain river. Probably logging. Rail engineering and construction is amazing and the high country stop was a highlight.

A visit to the train station was free and the building itself a stunner. We also visited the gallery on level one which had a artisan shop and also a gallery. The sports museum is also located there. Plenty to see and do 🤗🤗🤗

We had a great time on our Dunedin Railways tour! They had a nice lunch box for us that had a sandwich, a sweet treat, some cheese, and crackers and also had water. Bob was our tour announcer as we saw the great sights of Dunedin and he was a nice gentleman that had a great personality and contagious smile! Kenzie also made sure that everyone was doing well on board and having a great time!

Cool railway station with art galleries on the second story to look at. Nice to escape the weather and see stuff inside. No need to pay for entry or anything

I treated myself to a trip on The Stargazer from Dunedin to Hindon and back. The trip didn't disappoint, from arrival where staff from Tuhura Museum helped everyone get their stargazing apps up and running to getting off at the end. Precinct at the Tuhura Museum provided us with a great tasty 3 course meal. It was much appreciated by everyone from the comments I could hear from the seats around me. The lamb was magnificent and went well with my glass of wine. Once we arrived at Hindon, they divided us into 3 groups, and we attended the different workshops on offer. My favorite was looking through the telescopes provided by The Beverly Begg Observatory. It was pretty special getting a close-up look at our celestial neighbors. Much kudos to them as they had been waiting up there in the cold for us all to arrive in our warm and comfortable train. I keep thinking about the beautiful Jewellry Box constellation with all the different colours. I'm now looking at the night sky differently. Thank you to all who took part in teaching us about our skies. Finally, sated and tired, we hopped back on our warm train to travel home. But they weren't finished with us yet. On the way home,we got to listen to astrophysicist Michelle Thaller answer questions that we had put to her earlier. She covered everything from going to Mars, Aurora, and pineapple on pizza. She has a great way of putting information that sticks with you and is fun. It was a fantastic night, and if you have the opportunity to go on this trip, I couldn't recommend it to you highly enough. Just go and enjoy a great evening adventure.

We travelled from Pukerangi to Dunedin after the Central Otago rail trail. It was a great experience I would recommend for the history and landscape. There was in informative live commentary. The Dunedin Station is one of the finest buildings in NZ and worth seeing . The food onboard was great. I hope that one day the train will be able to go all the way to Middlemarch township like it used to.

My mum booked our family of four for the Seasider journey on wednesday 5th Nov. Unfortunately after we boarded the train and made our way to the seats we had been assigned we found staff member "Janet the Onboard Story Teller" sitting in our seats. She told us to sit somewhere else. She began the announcements by saying the best views are seen by sitting on the right side of the train (the side where she was sitting, the seats that we had booked) Everyone in the carriage was sitting on the right, we were the only ones on the left. This was quite disappointing as we are on holiday and this will probably be the only chance we get to experience this train journey. It looked like Janet enjoyed the views and even snapped a few photos. My mum did manage to slip in to the seat opposite her after halfway through the trip to try and get a few photos herself but it was a bit late by that point. It wasn't really worth the money given the circumstances. There was twin seats with tables that staff members could use where the mic was plugged in but I guess this staff member just wanted space for her drink and snacks. (Booking #316002311)

Absolutely superb. The Lawrence Mint staff are so friendly and helpful. The shop is super cute, and smells amazing. The truffles are incredible, while the kids loved the giant freckles. It pays to go early as they sell out often. From January to May they also cater picnics! They'll pack you a sweet or savoury picnic, you pick it, eat it, and take the basket back. Gluten free options too. Also, look in the cabinet for yesterday's specials. Goodies from the day before marked down but still super good. Always a good selection in them.

We shared a piece of lemon curd cheese cake thus morning. Oh my goodness, absolutely divine. The best cheesecake I've ever eaten. Very reasonably priced. Bought other goodies for later. Some gf and all high fibre low calories lol 😆

The variety of sweet treats that you can get here are second to none. We try and get some tarts when we pass through. Highly recommended calling in and sampling their wares. Lawrence has a great range of cool things to see.

Small scale chocolatier and cake shop. Everything is high quality, and the owner is really friendly. It's worth taking a detour to Lawrence just for this shop.
