Definitely worth a stop to read about the history of the bridge and local area. Nice little picnic area, although it was raining for our visit. The toilets were great though!
Terry L — Google review
We stopped off for a picnic after a walk at hauroko lake. Clifden bridge is pretty and the river seems healthier and higher then when we were here a decade ago. Great place for selfies and family pics. Has clean toilets so a good place to stop on your way north. Also since I mentioned the lake here's a look at it...
Simon P — Google review
Historical bridge.nice view of the river below. Plenty of parking. Most important, it has a toilet 😬
MT — Google review
A really great example of 19th century engineering still in remarkable condition - built in 10 months. Imagine the timeframe nowadays. Plenty of parking (but lots of free campers). A nice walk over the bridge
Colin S — Google review
This is a wonderful example of good old engineering, and it is still standing (with a bit recent maitenance). Fantastic that this still here. Make sure you drive a bit further up the road to visit Halls Totara, it is huge and a lovely walk through the forest.
Penny S — Google review
Another great tribute to WWI, this is a classic old wooden suspension bridge, progress for the time and available for us to appreciate now.
Keith K — Google review
Must stop if you like history. Old wooden bridge of NZ. Tried a cheese roll at the food truck near the bridge. Taste nice.
Phutawan W — Google review
It's an amazing feat of engineering you can totally see the cables and wonder about the physics of the bridge. There is a beautiful view of the river and a place to eat with a vista. There's also camping allowed in this area, so feel free to have a sleep over!

Do bring 2 sets of lamps!! Do prepared to tell someone you are going here if you are traveling alone! Do be prepared to get wet and dirty! It was a great experience - crawling through caves and walking through freezing puddles. We did not get to do the last part of the caves due to the water pool being way too deep and way too dark! We ended up walking/crawling the whole way back. It's definately worth the visit but read the reviews below before you go.
Sanne B — Google review
So cool that you can explore them by yourself. There are about 25 Numbers in the Caves which is not marked on the sign by the entrance which would have been helpful. Other than that great experience! Your clothes will get dirty and there are some places where you have to crawl and climb through smaller parts. With the right gear it is easy to make it through!
Hannah — Google review
I haven’t done that, but my partner has. He really enjoyed. At some point water was around 70 cm deep. He also said that most of the time he was almost on knees. He did in 45 min. Anyway he likes to explore that kind of things, but he is not an expert. The entrance is free but not for everyone. Expect to be wet, so dress appropriately.
Moma — Google review
If you are even considering whether or not to do this, just go for it! ROUTE - The path was well marked throughout so no need to get worried about get lost just follow the high visibility tape/arrows. It took about 40 minutes just as the sign said. The caves narrow quite a bit to sections approx 1.5 ft wide and will require a small amount of climbing. FREE - I would've paid money for this but so happy it was a free adventure. Made it feel like we found a hidden gem since the area was quiet with no queues. GEAR - We wore active wear, shoes we didn't mind getting wet and head lamps. It definitely pays to have two free hands. GLOWWORMS - we saw several glowworms at around the halfway point. Not a ton but they weren't even the main attraction at that point. They could be easy to miss if you are constantly looking and turning lights off SWIMMING POOL - the pool is unavoidable if you plan to go all the way through the cave. The middle of the pool was about 4ft deep, but you can go around the edges keeping to knee deep. We went a day after some light rain so it might have been more than usual.
Drew S — Google review
Took us 30 minutes from entrance to exit. We recommend a good torch and watershoes. Water was knee deep.
Ramona E — Google review
A super fun and accessible adventure! We turned back at the pool as we didn't fancy getting wet, it took us about 45 minutes there and back. The first section is the most cramped with lots of crouching and a bit of bum shuffling required, it then opens up and is mostly walking. Nothing too difficult, we managed it all without any crawling. Don't miss the wall of glowworms about halfway through! Thanks so much to the person in the reviews who labelled the map with the numbers, it helped a lot!
Natasha G — Google review
Really cool, free caves that you can walk through. It took me about 30 mins, but wanted to get through quickly in case my head torch died. There are a few sections which you have to squeeze and scramble through, and a pool at the end which you can shuffle around the edge of. Would recommend wearing shorts and wellies/wetsuit shoes as your feet will get wet. Definitely worth it though, would recommend!

Be aware of the equipment you need for the adventure, frontal, something to cover your head, and have some clothes to change. Go Go Go

Catches your eye with the art sculptures outside the building. Proprietor was very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed looking at the art and taking photos. One painting there that we definitely would purchase if we were rich.

I've driven past this gallery so many times over the years but on Monday we went in. What a treat! A marvelous gallery with a great space and stunning works. Check out the loo while you are there. I will be making this a regular stop from now on.
Alison B — Google review
Gallery has good quality fine art. Broad selection of nz artists and variety of genre. Knowledgeable curator and very welcoming. Pop in if your going past. They courier internationally.
Christine R — Google review
Simply turned off the road as I was driving through, but the ladies could not have been nicer. Great art collection too, various artists and good pieces.
Roberta R — Google review
The range of work here from local artists is quite extraordinary and varied. A real treat to visit. As an artist myself, it is a joy to spend time among work of this calibre and level. A huge range of approaches and styles, all of it very collectable. And they will arrange shipping. My pick: Luke Anthony's hand-carved native birds. Unmissable!

Stopped in here on the way back to Queenstown. A fantastic little store with a variety of artistic gift and items. The owner was incredibly welcoming and was able to give information on the origin of all the items in the store. She even makes a large number of the items herself. Not your standard, low quality 'Made In China' fridge magnets! Highly recommended!

Beautiful wee store in the South. Definitely need to stop there for a visit and a mooch for a gift or a treat for yourself!!! Anything from paintings to handmade scarves to gorgeous handcrafted jewellery by the talented owner!

Welcome Rock - Meet the High Country

Mentioned on
1 list
Tours
Cycling park
Welcome Rock offers an opportunity to explore the highlands and delve into the area's rich gold mining history along the Around the Mountains trail. The region is known for its rural charm and provides a great setting for cycling, allowing visitors to connect with friendly locals. The self-contained setup is ideal for two active individuals, offering opportunities for hiking and biking. The location provides stunning views, although it can get warm inside on clear summer days. However, the lack of light pollution makes for magical night skies.
Hiked in from the Ski Hut with a friend and my two preteen kids and stayed overnight at the Mud Hut. Trail was beautiful and well-maintained and the views were gorgeous. The Mud Hut is exactly as advertised: a rustic shelter that feels like stepping into a different time. We forgot to bring headlamps or torches, which made our experience extra "authentic," but we ate dinner and played cards by candlelight and firelight. The fireplace kept the hut warm and cozy overnight. Kids loved it.
Sean M — Google review
We had an easy drive followed by a really nice walk leading up to the hut. Beautiful weather for the most part besides the howling wind. Cozy outside bath with a great view. (ensure that the host has stashed enough firewood) Would recommend staying for 2 nights if you want to explore the tops and the area around the hut.
Divyesh P — Google review
My family stayed in the Slate Hut. We were unlucky with the weather so didn’t get to explore the trails much. When the weather cleared in the morning the views were stunning! However, we found the hut pretty run down and dirty (stained mattresses and blankets, mouse droppings everywhere, gas stove barely working, etc). Compared to the DOC huts we stayed in it was really run down and in need of a clean and fix up. Also, critically there is NO HEATING in the Slate Hut. Maybe this is clear to other guests, and there is a recommendation to bring warm gear (which we did, luckily as the temp got to 0C overnight). I would suggest this is explicitly spelt out in the description of the huts as it is a critical bit of info. The bath was great, the kids loved it. It took us 5+ hours to heat it (a sign in the hut suggests that it takes 3 hrs), maybe because of the cold weather.
Shannon R — Google review
Unbelieveable experience in completely exposed side of the mountain to the wind and cold. The hut feeling so remote like you're the only person in the district. And the outdoor hot tub was unique in set up and brilliant to experience. Loved it.
Zac A — Google review
Had an amazing stay at Kits Cabin. The Outdoor Baths are really a highlight. Beautiful scenery, well thoughtfully provided cabin. Put our phones away for the whole stay and what a beautiful way to recharge and reconnect :) Can't wait to come back would highly recommend.
Elaine T — Google review
Slates Hut did not live up to our wanderlust dreams - pretty dirty/run down/missing supplies. We had a nice stay at Kit’s Cabin the night before although wish the entrance from the road were better marked. Simple and small. Next night we hiked into Slates Hut. Here were our issues: - Trail when wet is narrow and slippery - Hike in to Slates is 3.5 km on the trail, not 2.5 km as stated on maps and guides from Welcome Rock - Cabin has an old gas burner that puts soot all over things. Dish-ware is either dusty from never being used or smeared with soot. - Cabin was low on key supplies. We almost thought we’d miss a meal because there were only 2 lighters that did not work at first, and 1 match. Also only 4 sheets of toilet paper. Yikes! - visitors book is full, last entry was over a year old when we stayed - bed/bedding just stays at the cabin for use, it’s not cleaned. Dusty old sheet, old pillows, and a bunch of sleeping bags that you hope are okay to sleep under. Overall I wish Kit’s Cabin had its own Google Maps location and reviews, and that the owners cared about updates to the Slate Cabin trail, supplies, and information. I emailed them our issues with no reply. I would not stay again on the trail cabins, and very glad we did not try to bike as the trail would be a slogfest when damp and too narrow for me even if dry. Beautiful views up here though!
Evelyn F — Google review
Stayed at the Red Shed. Nice set up, comfortable and clean. The baths are lovely. A good spot for a chill getaway.
Sarah O — Google review
Awesome location and great track. Only a couple things to be careful of. The road up to Ski hut requires a vehicle with good clearance and if wet might need a 4wd. For some reason this isn't mentioned in any of the booking information. Also the cookers are a bit average. Don't really burn very well and puts soot all over pots and pans which is hard to clean off.

What a gem of an aviation museum with a fabulous cafe and arts and craft hub. You can arrive by car or plane (as we did) with a very well manicured grass strip. Will have to go for a spin in the Tiger Moth next visit.
Geoff C — Google review
Wow, there is a range of older aircraft that I haven't seen before. You can fly in a Sopwith Camel biplane. Didn't cost much to get in $10. it was well worth it.
Dh716574 — Google review
Lovely little place to stop whilst on the road. $12 each to go in and see the aircraft which is pennies to support local. If you've got a bit of cash, treat yourself to a flight around NZ! Very clean, well managed and maintained. Support local ❤️🙏🏽

This place was awesome I went for a ride in an old Tiger Moth plane , you can go for helicopter rides they have a great cafe that you can get a cuppa or full on lunches nice food really friendly and helpful staff the pilot was friendly and helpful great day out alround nice want to do something different then visit this place 😀 awesome
Angela R — Google review
This is a wonderful place to educate children about aviation, especially aviation history in New Zealand. Accompanied children can enter the hangar for free to see the collection of airplanes, some of which still fly. Adults need to pay a small fee, but it is worth it.
Masrizal M — Google review
Such a wonderful museum with knowledgeable and lovely staff! An awesome family visit, learning about various aircrafts and a train with a steam engine. We were treated to one of the aircrafts taking off and landing whilst we were visiting. There is a charming cafe/restaurant, as well as a retail boutique by the museum.

I’ve always just driven through Mandeville and never really stopped. Glad I did! Was looking for something to do with the family and everyone really enjoyed the heritage centre. Great restoration work and museum of old planes. The lady working there was great and very helpful.

Just a fantastic place to walk around . We spent 2hrs walking around unbelievable amount of trees, shrubs , ferns and flowers. 75 acres of land in total. 11hrs to mow the lawns, tractor with twin mowers . Closer to the buildings you have guinea fowles, golden pheasant , doves , 1 ostrich and black and white turkeys.

Absolutely gorgeous! Just like getting into a fairyland when wandering around the Bluebell Forest. So many beautiful flowers, together with the ponds and lawn paths, give you a lot of photographs imaginations.

this private garden reminds me of Bush Garden in Victoria Island. The owner is a couple of 91 and 78 years old. It is free. We get recommendation frim Gore visit center, and it is on our way to Curio Bay. We spent over an hour there and also talked to the owners.

I was absolutely stunned by the scale of this garden and the many man-made lakes it has. I nearly got lost in it as I couldn't find my way back to the car-park by 5:00pm. I recommend you have a map with you when visiting :-)

You have to visit this beautiful place. This place is simply paradise. Don't forget to donate a little and take a few hours to enjoy every single area of the garden.

Located in Eastern Southland, the Eastern Southland Gallery is a true cultural treasure for art enthusiasts. The gallery features new exhibitions and an extensive Money collection with items from Mali, works of Rita Angus from New Zealand, and various unusual pieces. Visitors can also explore Mark Brown's collection ranging from Cook to self-portraits. The gallery's heritage building is a beautiful sight to behold, especially when surrounded by the scented garden in full bloom during spring.
Beautiful heritage building - don't forget to enjoy it from the outside, the scented garden is in full bloom this spring! Jo Ogier's long awaited exhibition and installation is definitely worth a visit. She has created a unique space in which you can be embraced by the Mataura River in its natural diversity. The eclectic art collection inside has some very important 20th century NZ artists' work (like Ralph Hotere and Theo Schoon) alongside some impressive African indigenous art consisting of larger than life ancestral statues, among others. The John Money collection may be problematic for those who support our trans gender whanau, but his medical work and advocacy does not erase the fact that he was a longtime friend and patron to many of our artists from early on in their careers.

Fantastic place to celebrate an amazing exhibition launch. We'll done

Best little gallery in NZ. A surprise in a surprising town. Beautifully curated with an incredible wee collection of works by Ralph Hotere and Rita Angus. This secret needs to get out.

Great Gallery. Ralph Hotere, Robin White, some fery interesting African pieces. Beautifully presented. Well worth a visit
Caron S — Google review
Incredible facility in a lovely heritage building. It's 100% worth visiting Gore just to see this. They have regular temporary exhibitions in the front two rooms and then behind that you'll find the Ralph Hotere collection and the truly amazing John Money collection including Rita Angus, Theo Schoon and the most impressive collection of African art you will see anywhere in NZ. Highly recommended.
Mary B — Google review
Free entry. Has some nice sculptures and artwork, mostly donated by a local philanthropist.

Some interesting art pieces. Free to visit, but best to leave a donation :)

A true treasure. New exhibitions plus more room for the Money collection. This is a cultural treasure and interesting for any one who likes art. The Money collection has items from Mali and works Of Rita Angus from New Zealabd as well as lots of unusual pieces. Mark Brown's collection ranges from Cook to self portraits. A joy to view and cheered up a grey day. The Ralph Hotere exhibition was very interesting. Len Lye had a moving rod work that is called Leaves of Grass. Lots of parking by visitor centre. Easy to find and toilets on site. No cafe and friendly staff. No cost but donations happily excepted. In the centre of Gore.

The Hokonui Moonshine Museum, currently closed for renovations, offers a glimpse into the illicit whisky distilling and bootlegging history of Gore. The museum showcases the McRae clan's leadership in illegal whisky production during the 1870s and now offers legal purchase of Old Hokonui whisky made to the original recipe. Visitors can also explore a free local museum located at the Gore Visitor Centre.
Very cute & small city on the way to Te Anau for Milford sound, it was great to see there

First time visit to this museum - found the exhibitions to be informative and well set out. Great to see the distillery and be able to sample the moonshine - excellent small gift shop selling hats, t shirts and beautiful presented gift boxes with moonshine and locally made chocolates -worth the visit whilst visiting Gore
Margaret C — Google review
Very informative museum and well laid out. Interesting history on prohibition and brewing of whiskey. Also the history of Scottish Immigration.
Kiwisflythecoop N — Google review
Great display on the moonshine history, prohibition and the Scottish links. Highly recommend a stop and a drop at the tasting at the end. Particularly on a chilly morning as a warming nip. Drop over to the gallery across the road as well.

We were given a great tour through this museum by Jim, so informative and interesting and funny. A real slice of history of Southland, prohibition, Scottish settlers and a wee taste at the end. Well worth stopping in.

This one of the best community museums that I have visited. It is comprehensive and the history is told well. The Young lady behind the counter is pleasant and informative.

This was one of the best museums we've ever been to. The presentation was excellent as we followed the lives of the McCraes and their whisky making. It was fascinating, and a tasting at the end? Magic

Amazing collection of local history strictly for viewing only, no photography permitted. A shame for those doing genealogy research for others, and the collection is not, and will not, be digitised. Pleasant volunteers but a very frustrating and disappointing visit.

Nestled in the charming settlement of Tuapeka Mouth, just a short 25-minute drive from Lawrence, lies the fascinating Tuapeka Mouth Ferry. This unique ferry service has been delighting visitors since 1896, offering a nostalgic way to cross the Clutha Mata-au River on a floating platform that accommodates vehicles. The ferry operates without engines, relying solely on water flow for its movement—an experience that truly takes you back in time.
Wow, just wow. All run on water flow only

A piece of living history & a joy to cross the Clutha on the punt. Postcards, info boards & the skippers knowledge round out the experience

Great wee punt that takes you back in time. Very interesting to learn how it works. Open between 8am-10am & 4pm-6pm in the summer, drive your car on & off the other side ☺

The Lost Gypsy Gallery in New Zealand is a fascinating and delightful place for curious minds. The gallery features cleverly engineered creations with a touch of humor, including an array of animated gadgets based on mechanical, water, or electrical principles. Visitors can spend hours exploring the multitude of interactive exhibits both inside the gallery bus and in the extensive outdoor collection. For a small fee, guests can enter the theater to experience even more captivating displays.
Wow! Just wow! Mad scientist/creative genius shares a gallery full of gizmos that make you laugh out loud and exclaim in amazement. Give yourself at least an hour if not two. I went through the house bus a second time and discovered things I'd missed the first time round. Nice coffee and yummy slices from the food cart as well.

The Purakaunui Falls Walk is a short, 15-minute return track that leads to the iconic Purakaunui Falls, one of the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand. The walk is easily accessible from a spacious car park with public toilets and offers a leisurely stroll towards the falls, including a descent down some stairs to reach the viewing platform. The area is known for its lack of mobile signal coverage, making it an ideal spot to disconnect and enjoy nature.
Fairly easy 10 minute walk to the falls but I'd say it may be a bit slippy in the rain. We went on a lovely sunny day and the waterfalls were lovely. I'd imagine even more spectacular after some rain. Highly recommend going here
Daren L — Google review
I have a bad leg and the walk was still doable. Steep stairs in one part, be careful when wet. Vault athrooms at parking. No cost. Road to Owaka is paved, gravel in the other direction at this time. 10 to 15 minute walk to the end.
Todd S — Google review
Purakaunui Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever visited. The walk through the forest to reach it was calm and refreshing, surrounded by tall trees and the sound of birds. The waterfall itself was stunning, with water flowing gracefully over three tiers of rocks. It looked picture-perfect from every angle. The viewing platform made it easy to enjoy the full view and take great photos. The area was clean and well maintained. A peaceful and unforgettable place to visit. A solid 5-star experience.

Great walk for families. 15 minutes round trip on a flat gravel path along the river. A few stairs to descend before reaching the waterfall. Can be busy in summer, visit in morning or off season to get the views to yourself. Toilets, picnic area and non potable water in car park

A must stop on any drive through the Catlins. Plenty of parking and toilets, well marked trail through beautiful forest to the falls. Some steps on the way. The falls look like they've been designed - so beautiful, and a prefect viewing platform to see them from. We love to chat with tourist info staff and here we were warmly greeted by Ange, who gave us the rundown on Balclutha as well as our coastal journey. Ange you're an asset to the site team. Loved our visit. The new building is pretty impressive too!
Colin S — Google review
This visitors center was actually amazing. There’s a work space upstairs and has a lot of large windows that can be used to get a view of the river and the houses that are next to it. I got a very Japanese vibe from the whole view. The lady who was working at the information center was incredibly kind and gave me a bunch of information about the Caitlins and some of the surrounding areas. There’s also a cinema in the building as well that plays some movies here and there.

Amazing experience. Jared was an excellent guide and showed us loads of cool wildlife including little blue penguins, albatross and fur seals. The boats are really good and it was a very relaxed trip with the best view of Nuggets Point, and it was just us there. Highly recommend!
Adam D — Google review
Absolutely amazing tour, definitely should be on your to-do list if you are visiting the area. It is the best way to get up close with the Nuggets and the abundance of sea life that occupies them. Jared is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable on the history and biology of the area. A brilliant way to start the morning!

We absolutely loved our kayak tour! Spectacular from start to finish. We visited the amazing nuggets which were so beautiful! The tour was extremely well organised and Jared was a very knowledgeable and engaging guide. His passion for the area and the beautiful animals was infectious! He even offered to help us out as we were low on petrol incase we ran out on our drive back but luckily no problem. Have a wee before you go or pop by the Kaka point cafe which is nice too. The wildlife we saw was incredible and I will never forget. Perfect for those visiting the catlins or even I would suggest a brilliant day trip from Dunedin.

My last trip to Nugget Point was absolutely amazing. The view from the lighthouse was breathtaking, with the ocean stretching endlessly and waves crashing against the rocks below. The walk to the lighthouse was easy and scenic, surrounded by native plants and bird sounds. I spotted seals resting on the rocks, which made the visit even more special. Sutton Salt Lake is a unique natural wonder located just a short drive from Middlemarch in New Zealand. Visitors can admire water birds, native and exotic plants, and picturesque rock tors while enjoying an easy undulating round trip to the lake. The 3.

Really worth the effort if you are in the area. 1 hrs walk to lake and really cool rocks, landscape. Kids will love it
Tim T — Google review
A beautiful loop walk around Sutton Salt Lake, 3.5 km on the flat, takes about an hour. stunning landscape of distinctive schist tors and rock pillars. Sutton Salt Lake is New Zealand’s only inland salt lake. It has no outlet, so the lake has concentrated the salts from surrounding soils. Formed over the last 3 million years, the ‘Rock and Pillars’ are a series of folds (steep ranges rolling onwards like an ocean swell), the result of deep local faulting. Some blocks of schist rock remain long after the surrounding rock has eroded away. These ‘tors’ are a feature of the bleak and windswept ridges. Freeze and thaw cycles make it difficult for plants to grow and have left wave-like ridge patterns in the soil. A lens-shaped cloud formation, known locally as the ‘Taieri Pet’, is seen regularly during north-west winds. A highly unusual cloud formation that is found in very few places around the world. The Rock and Pillars have a very flat top with steep slopes on either side, and they lie perpendicular to the prevailing westerly winds. When these “fohn” winds are forced up and over the range it can create a dramatic cloud formation that the locals call “The Taieri Pet.” Meteorologists call it a “lenticular billow cloud.” It can be a single lens-shaped cloud or it can be shaped like a huge stack of pancakes with clear air between the cloud layers. It may seem stationary, but the wind is circulating rapidly through the cloud.

Self-Guided Tours & Rentals
The Central Cycle Trails in the South Island of New Zealand offer a variety of mountain biking experiences suitable for different fitness levels. The trails provide options for tailored packages, including accommodation and bike rentals, making it convenient for visitors to simply show up and start riding. With stunning landscapes and well-planned routes, such as the Otago Central Rail Trail, cyclists can enjoy a memorable journey through the high country terrain.
We loved our 5 day cycle tour of the Otago rail trail booked through Cycle Surgery. The ebikes were top notch, comfortable and easy to use. The accommodation was fantastic, including historic buildings, and we even had dinner bookings and transfers to restaurants each night. It was a pleasure to leave our bags each morning, zoom off on our bikes, and find our bags waiting for us at the next stop. The staff were all fun, chatty and interesting. We found the app really useful for our itinerary (including lunch recommendations) and for up to date information about the trail and conditions. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others, and in fact already have.
Andrea J — Google review
Superb hospitality from Donna, saved my day. Sadly I was just passing by Middlemarch, but they seem to have a wealth of history and strong community. Might as well spend a couple of nights there next time around.
Vinicius T — Google review
I can’t say enough about this team. From our initial booking and having a tailor made package for the four of us which suited our needs and budget. We opted for a more expensive package which included the Taieri Railway trip to Middlemarch to start the track and great accomodation for 3 nights from the options offered us. You choose what you want and pay accordingly which suited us fine. Loved the ability of just turning up on day 1 and being able to ride with bikes already sorted and accomodation already prebooked. As we had just come off 3 days on the Routeburn Track we also had the problem of getting all or packs and gear from accommodation to accomodation each night but that was no problem to Cycle Surgery and it arrived at each destination before us each day. From our first contact with them all our queries were answered and promptly- nothing was too hard and if we do the trail again we would use them again. On the completion of the trail and getting transported back to Queenstown we got an excellent commentary from Lonnie about places of interest along the way and showed the value of staff who are engaged with their work as opposed to just turning up each day. I researched service providers on Google before booking and also spoke with friends who had done the Rail Trail and used Cycle Surgery before and went with them. So glad we did and after our experience with them and the comprehensive package and services they offer we highly recommend them.

A perfect trip well planned by Cycle Surgery.I had the idea for a surprise getaway culminating in a romantic proposal but didn't know where to start. One email to Pip at Cycle Surgery and she had it all sorted.3 beautiful and very different nights accommodation.Fantastic meal bookings.Car transfer. The most comfortable bikes we have ever ridden. And the special touch of organizing Champagne and Flowers to be set up in our Accommodation. Thanks to Pip and the team.It was such a pleasure to have people that are so passionate about what they do help us with our special weekend.

Every aspect of the service from Cycle Surgery was excellent from start (in 2019 for a March 2020 trip that got called off) to finish (rebooked for Feb 2021 and in the opposite direction - and a marvellous experience). We would unreservedly recommend them - whether you are an experienced cyclist or a newbie. The Rail Trail is wonderful, we will do it again hopefully and if we do we will be on the email to Pip at Cycle Surgery
Alison P — Google review
4 day ride was perfect, a group of 13 people was so much fun and great weather with spectacular views. Cycle Surgery provided awesome bikes and fantastic backup, we had one tyre blow out and they fixed it with in 1/2hr. Amazing
Ty H — Google review
Unfortunately for us, we didn't book our hire bikes and rail trail tour through Cycle Surgery, otherwise things may have been a bit smoother! We did, however, book a transfer from Dunedin to Middlemarch (with John - what a great guy) to start the rail trail and a jet boat ride out of Alexandra with Lawrence! Lucky we did, as our trip was cut short due to flooding and it was Cycle Surgery to the rescue with a scenic trip with Dave from Middlemarch back to Dunedin. Cycle Surgery have great facilities and a huge variety of hire bikes for all levels - they cater for day trips on ebikes, adventures on MTBs, or longer trips for those bike packing! They know all there is to know about getting the most out of the time you have and value your holiday time as much as you do! Their business model is all about your happiness and that is very evident in all our dealings with the staff. When we come back to finish the Roxburgh and Clutha Gold trails, we will definitely be booking through Cycle Surgery!
Claire B — Google review
Would highly recommend booking your rail trail adventure with Cycle Surgery. My husband and I booked this last year and did the trail April 2019. Right from the first email, they responded quickly and with a wonderful itinerary, which included transfers to and from Dunedin. The bikes were fantastic, with no issues on the trail. Accommodation was very good, comfy beds and nice and clean and tidy with lovely continental breakfast provided. It was also great to be booked into places for night meals so you didn't have to worry about where to go. If this adventure is on your bucket list, tick it off, it's a must. Contact Cycle Surgery now! You won't be disappointed

I’m giving you zero stars for the management of the wetlands. I use to come to the wetlands frequently when I was younger, and I also knew the founder. I am still shocked at how poorly this resource has been managed. My star rating reflects the poor management which has resulted into this wetlands looking more and more like a farm and less and less like water bird habitat. I don’t know how to express my disappointment enough. It looks like due to poor management no one cares so you are burning an iconic landmark in NZ. Someone needs to pull their finger out and do something before it’s gone for ever! I have the correct wetland obviously, I also mentioned I spent much of my time on it and knew the former owner before this happened.... Ducks Unlimited sold the Sinclair Wetlands about 20 years ago to the Government and it became part of the Treaty Settlement with Nga Tahu .

An environmental gem hidden near Dunedin. Gravel road. The wetlands are being restored and offer a great chance to explore and examine flora and fauna. My two preschoolers and I walked the loop - easy walk and both girls (aged 3 and 4) made it round the 2 hr walk. Keep an eye out for the Department of Conservation Kiwi Guardian post too. Lots of wildlife and information panels. Good toilets. Can't wait to explore this in different weather and seasons.

Absolutely superb. The Lawrence Mint staff are so friendly and helpful. The shop is super cute, and smells amazing. The truffles are incredible, while the kids loved the giant freckles. It pays to go early as they sell out often. From January to May they also cater picnics! They'll pack you a sweet or savoury picnic, you pick it, eat it, and take the basket back. Gluten free options too. Also, look in the cabinet for yesterday's specials. Goodies from the day before marked down but still super good. Always a good selection in them.
