Nanxun Old Town

Mentioned on
1 list
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Walking Areas
Nanxun Old Town is a tranquil water town with a history of over 1400 years, boasting ancient buildings and bridges. Visitors can enjoy boating and walking tours while taking in the well-preserved architecture. The town offers various dining options, and a boat ride along the waterways is highly recommended. It's accessible by taxi from Suzhou, approximately 1.5 hours away.
Like many ancient towns in China, Nanxun is quite commercialized. Houses are beautiful, many are restaurants now but there are still people living in this town. The rivers, or should I say canals, extend through the whole town. You can walk everywhere but I strongly suggest a boat ride with the awning boats. I went to this town during the plum rains season, not ideal if you hate rains, but perfect if you really want to experience the “misty Jiangnan”, a well-known poetic depiction of the views in the old towns in the south side of the Yangtze river. Basically it is a Venice with mist and oriental features. Although you can walk everywhere but I strongly suggest to get on one of those famous awning boats to have to full experience. The local cuisine is also well-known in this area. River shrimps are small (as they are supposed to be) and the white fish has many fishbones (really a lot). I liked it a lot but it is probably not for everyone.

I’m giving Nanxun Old Town a full five stars because I’m still thinking about how peaceful and beautiful it is. I’m walking through the stone bridges and canals and I’m feeling like time is slowing down in the best way. The town is less commercial than many other water towns, so I’m enjoying real charm, quieter streets, and friendly locals who make the place feel warm and genuine. And it's FREE admission! The waterways, old houses, and photo spots are gorgeous and I’m finding something pretty at every corner. I also love that I can wander without feeling rushed or pushed by crowds. If anyone is looking for a calm and authentic Jiangnan water town experience, this is the place to go!
Sky D — Google review
It is a very beautiful place to visit, during November the weather is a little cold and lesser people. However, I love it... a very well-preserved architecture. Many small small F&B to try out and you should really try to boat ride, only RMB160 for whole entire boat, so even if you are 2 persons you still have to charter the whole boat for the same price but it is worth the money. Highly recommended for tourists like me who don't like to walk too much
Marcus T — Google review
Soooo beautiful, also huge place to explore.. love it so much 👍
Vingy D — Google review
Beautiful architecture, however, many speakers with lots of advertising or announcements, so very noisy. Also many very loud talking people and scooters horning and riding on sidewalks. Making the city very quiet would make it much more pleasant.
Rem — Google review
南浔古镇 Nanxun old town, You can take a taxi from Suzhou town to Nanxun old town with about 1 and half hour and RMB 150 - RMB 200 without the toll fee. The entrance of Nanxun old town is free but you can hire a tour guide (RMB 100-200) to bring you around with explaining But all the history houses need to pay the entrance fee (age more than 60 half price will show your passport). Nice place to go
Leong C — Google review
See the main areas but if you get there and it's too crowed just get around and explore you will see almost no one because the tours don't go that far. It took me 3 hours and a half to see the whole are and I would have preferred to go by myself that to book a tour but it was cheaper. As soon as we arrived I left the group to explore by myself. It was the best I could have done. The areas close to the last bridge are quite isolated and one can see houses of real people along the channel, they dry their clothes and underwear as well as fish in the river and cooked what they've caught, it's charming. The most important or touristic parts are the old houses, the temple and the rice wine factory.

What a beautiful lake to walk and relax. You can also take the boat hopping to different pit stops and enjoy the scenary around. Good numbers of restaurants and cafes for you to hang out. Mainly Chinese tourists touring here and all are in orderly fashion. Overall it is a must visit place whenever you are in HangZhou.

West Lake in Hangzhou is absolutely stunning and peaceful. The mix of mountains, temples, gardens, and calm water creates a picture-perfect view. A wonderful place to walk, take a boat ride, and enjoy the beauty of traditional Chinese scenery.

West Lake is beautiful, with amazing views and a peaceful atmosphere. However, it’s really overcrowded, especially on weekends, which makes it hard to fully enjoy the scenery.
Angela — Google review
Nice place to walk around the edge of the lake. The boat ride is also ok. West lake is one of the few tourist attractions in hangzhou. And near the west lake, there are many shops, most of them international brands. Walk along the lake bank, walk across the stores/shops and the boat ride is interesting.

A pretty lake espousing classical Chinese garden aesthetics. The walking trail around the Lake is about 11km - mostly flat with well-maintained pathways. There are lots of resting spot with shade, facilities kiosk, toilets, restaurants dotted around the Lake. The popular Leifeng Pagoda is quite far to walk to from the West Lake Metro. The tourist "electric train" is a convenient option, although the trip doesn't always has a view of the Lake. There is a 15 minutes Lazer Show at night at around 7.30pm at the Scenic Area Music Fountain.

Lingyin Temple

Lingyin Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Hangzhou dating back to 328 CE, has been rebuilt multiple times due to damage from fires and warfare. The temple is a fascinating blend of ancient tradition and modernity, with millennial-pink cafes and modern monuments juxtaposed against its historic stone carvings. Visitors can embark on a tour of Hangzhou that includes a cruise on the lake, followed by a visit to Lingyin Temple for an immersive experience in Chinese Buddhism.
Breathtaking ancient temple! Founded in 326AD with 1,700 years of history, one of China's ten most famous Buddhist temples. Nestled in lush Wulin Mountains, truly lives up to "Temple of the Soul's Retreat". Impressive entrance hall and heavenly king statues. Deeply serene experience!
Phoenix Y — Google review
The place is nice but very busy. I enjoyed the climb — about 350 meters up to reach the temple at the top. The view and atmosphere are beautiful, but it’s quite touristic. There’s also a cable car if you prefer not to walk. It’s a bit expensive, yet still a very spiritual experience, though there were too many people for my taste.
Angela — Google review
Before coming to Hangzhou, I did a very good research about the place and everyone said that I need to see this place. I loved the architecture of the temple. The guide explained to us lots of details we needed to know. This temple has the biggest gold coated (33 kgs of gold) buddah. It was nice to see how people worship at this temple. The place can be very crowded.
Antoun B — Google review
Historic place, ancient temple with many idols, Buddha, and many other saints and monks. It's a very divine place, crowded with a lot of people, and features clean, organized maintenance. Worth visiting to get blessings from the divine powers.
Bala G — Google review
The entire area is huge and you can take whole day to visit all the temples and peaks. Took a cab to the place, but you need to alight at the carpark outside and walk about 10min to the entrance. The road to the place was jammed too. The short taxi ride from Yue temple took more than 30min. There are also many interesting shop on the way to the Lingyin temple. There are also many restaurants at the main entrance. The shade and breezy wind help to make the visit more enjoyable in summer. Spent about 1-2hours only manage to visit Lingyin temple only. This temple alone is big.
Young G — Google review
We took the metro Line 1 from Wulin Square and the bus or you can book taxi go to here. A spacious pagoda with many stone Budda on the moutain
Helena N — Google review
Vast, expansive temple, crowded over the weekend, particularly in the main hall where a ceremony was taking place.

Xixi National Wetland Park, often referred to as the "kidney of Hangzhou" due to its cleansing properties, is a picturesque destination located just a 20-minute drive from West Lake. This expansive park boasts an array of ponds, lakes, swamps, and villages dating back to the Han dynasty. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vivid cultural heritage and witness ancient crafts such as silk farming and book engraving.
Pleasant park with lots of walking paths. Plenty of small restaurants within the park boundary. We stayed overnight at a charming hotel called the Xixi Fan Yuan Hotel (凡云酒店) which was walking distance to a museum, a “walking street” with eateries and arts and craft shops.

Xixi national werland Park is really a treasure, it’s a very big park so I walked a lot. The place is tranquil and beautiful and it seems to go back in time. I had fun searching for shrines, little houses and bridges 🌳🦋

Nice big wetland with canals for boat rides but unfortunately the guides on the boats don’t speak any English. Also where are all the birds? A wetland park like this should be teeming with water birds, but all I have seen so far is one duck and one Herron. Plenty of places to buy food and drinks at the boat piers. Finally if you have difficulty walking the paving of the footpaths is quite uneven.
Chris P — Google review
It is a local park and attraction. CNY 80 entrance fee, which I thought is a bit high. There isn’t much to see. The staff at the information counter isn’t too helpful and patient. Maybe it is nicer during spring time when flower blossom.
Henry K — Google review
A city park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. It is full of lakes, ponds, streams and greenery. A lovely place to walk and there is a lot of wildlife there, despite what some reviews say. I saw invertebrates, amphibians, birds, fish, and one mammal (a bat) in the space of about 3 hours. There are also plenty of food vendors, shops, and some museums and art exhibitions. Entry to the park is free, but the boat trips, hot air balloon, and Gao's mansion all cost, I think. Well worth a visit if you are in or near Hangzhou.
James C — Google review
Top ❤️. One of the top places in all China ❤️. Worth the travel, must visit during a trip in East China, for a well-preserved wetland scenery, animals and plants, temples and traditional buildings 😊✨👍

What a beautiful wetland park, and the ticket is free. The scenic area is very large. We stayed at the Sheraton Hotel next to it and spent 6 days visiting the park. We took a walk in the park every morning. It was full of green trees, birds and flowers. It was a pity that there was too little tourist content available on Google Maps. Basically, there was no information on this map. I hope foreign tourists will download local maps. Hangzhou has a lot of food and attractions.

The train war from Shanghai itself is long, and the bus that supposing take us into Hengdian dropped us in the middle of no where! Other than that, everything is awesome! Toilet is clean, maybe becuse its the winter and there isnt any crowd! But everything else was better than expected..their 3 stars hotel is surprisingly good!

It was not until I visited The Hengdian World Studios in 2011 that I found out it was the largest stidio in the world!. Hi I'm Darryl Hetherington from Australia. I was living in Yiwu which is in Zhejiang province around 3 hours down the express way from Shanghai. A friend of mine decided we should go to visit Hengdian, and told me absolutely nothing of her plan. We were swamped by tri-cab riders at the bus station upon arrival - I was a bit shocked as I have never frequented tourist spots in China. The price was negotiated and we were taken to the studio, Some time during WW2 the town hosted Chairman Mao and his men en route to save China. The detail in which the buildings are reconstructed in the studios is amazing. I spent many many hours just admiring the heritage and detail of the ancient buildings relocated to this place. Something NOT to be missed is a model city which is HUGE and built with amazing detail. Photos are not allowed so take a small camera and don't blatantly break the rules. I will go back one day to finish my tour of Hengdian World Studios as more has been added and much upgrading has been done since. Highly Recommended

Not worth visiting if you’re short on time. Islands were crowded and quite boring, need to pay to even go on the second deck of the sightseeing boat. However view of the lake was decent. Tourist service was also substandard and lacks honesty. Food was good, though and worth a try. Was not worth the time and money for such a short trip and does not fully deserve the hype.

The 1,300-plus-year-old ruins of an ancient city lost in time was not an outcome of global warming but rather a man-made phenomenon for the betterment of modern civilization. In 1959, the local government decided to construct a new hydroelectric power station was needed to fulfill the demand of the growing population. A dam was constructed and the rushing waters soon submerged Shicheng in more than 100 feet of water.

Underwater City in Shicheng, China This incredible underwater city, trapped in time, is 1341 years old. Shicheng, or Lion City, is located in the Zhejiang province in eastern China. It was submerged in 1959 during the construction of the Xin’an River Hydropower Station. The water protects the city from wind and rain erosion, so it has remained sealed underwater in relatively good condition.

The views are unquestionably outstanding! We went in November which is out of season but the place was still so busy. Large tour groups go around the park with guides who shout constantly through loudspeakers which takes away from the serenity of the park. Also, we needed to get down via cable car but had run out of cash from paying for so many bus transfers, tickets and entrance fees. We were told by a hotel that they will take MasterCard but they didn’t! We were stuck and the cable car was soon closing. The ticket officer was just laughing at us which made it even worse. We luckily found a very sweet group of ladies who paid our fare and we made it down. Terrible service from the park though!

Xihai Hotel HuangShan is a relaxed hillside establishment with stylish rooms and suites, some featuring balconies. The hotel boasts two restaurants and a bar. Despite its location at the top of a mountain, the hotel maintains high standards of cleanliness and organization. There are two sections in the hotel- one primarily for Chinese travelers and another for foreigners designed to resemble Las Vegas that exudes luxury. However, there is a personal preference towards the first section due to its laid-back vibe.
Xihai Hotel Huangshan offers spectacular views of the mountains. we stayed there for 4 consecutive nights as we wanted to cover as many trails as possible. our room is in A wing and has a walk out balcony. it is comfortable and clean. towels and bedding are white and soft. we had all our meals at the Hotel restaurant. the food is tasty. ingredient fresh with many choices. Staff is friendly and professional. highly recommend.
Anne C — Google review
The Xihai hotel is a very convenient starting point to explore the Xihai valley which was the most impressive scenic area in Huangshan 'yellow mountains' for us! (there are many more scenic areas arround) We liked the overall setting of the hotel with interesting architecture and good infrastructure (e.g. we had a dryer for clothers in our rooms which was useful after one rainy afternoon). We had some troubles with the food but there is enough choice to find something decent in the buffet. Nice staff!
Philipp S — Google review
Can't beat the location, and it also looks right over the ridge. The rooms are small sized, but comfortable. The hotel itself can feel crowded. Their lunch is a buffet, 120,and dinner is also a buffet, 180 rmb, both don't have much vegetarian. Service at the hotel and restaurant is fine.
Mini R — Google review
Put a night or 2 at the hotel in the Mt Huangshan scenic area if you want to capture sunset and sunrise. Room rates are very much higher than outside. In general, they provide good service, clean amenities and good breakfast included. There are several spots for photographers, each hotel will recommend suitable locations nearby their hotel. The hotel staff will lead the group to and from the spot.
Vincent T — Google review
Stayed 1 night to attend sunrise / sunset. Prices are similar among the hotels on the top. (I paid ~1100¥ for a 2 single beds room) Breakfast is buffet and was included but for dinner, I ate a the hotel, was a buffet as well. Not the best food but considering the altitude is still pretty nice. (Paid 180¥) The hotel organised a trip to go watch the sun rise ( leaving hotel a 4:40am) and every room has winter jacket with the hotel logos at disposal (it is still quite chilly windy in the morning) The receptionist 小马 was really helpful : provided me all the info I needed, a spot to go watch sunset, an itinerary for my way back down the mountain the following day
Jiang J — Google review
This hotel is clean, tidy and not what you'd expect at the top of a mountain. After a couple of hours of mountain stair climbing, this hotel is downright luxurious. The hotel has two parts: a section where mostly Chinese travelers stay (and where I stayed), and another section where mainly foreigners stay. The second section is luxurious and is designed to look like Vegas. I prefer the first section, personally.
Yang W — Google review
Stayed here with friends one night. Hotel is located top of the mountain. Okay for staying a night. Since the place is located top of the mountain, you don't have much choices for your meal. You have to eat from hotel and very crowded. Rooms are cleaned but pretty small for the price. For one night? It is not bad~~~ Most people stays here for sunrise...
Andres K — Google review
Very clean and comfortable hotel. Breakfast is standard. Nothing to shout but I think it is better than the other hotels up in the mountain. Lunch and dinner is great depends on what you order. The rooms are not too big but the heater is appalling. We went there during winter and was from - 6 to 0 degrees Celsius. We set to 22 degrees but the maximum it went was 14. The air was too dry. I don't know why they don't provide humidifiers. We requested for an extra heater which the housekeeping gladly provides. Also mineral bottled water isn't provided so you need to purchase it at the convenience store at the lobby from RMB15 per bottle to support the people transporting it up to the hotel. Hotel located quite strategic to a sunset point which is about 10-15 min walk. Massage is expensive but the messuer is good.

Chengkan Village is a quaint old village where some residents still live, preserving the simple and traditional Hui-style architecture. The narrow streets create a maze-like atmosphere, showcasing historic houses and offering souvenirs, local food, and handicrafts. Despite its historical and cultural significance, the commercial atmosphere is not overpowering. It's recommended to visit this village to experience its authentic charm and interact with the kind residents who contribute to its preservation.
This little city is amazing. It is a must stop if you're the type to want to visit the less obvious tourist places. If you happen to be in Shanghai of course see the tower, the Bund and the zoo, but if you have a day go to Chenkan. It is an old place, tight quirky and full to the brim with hand crafted masterpieces. The old houses are impressive, the old temple with the old paintings, yes it could or should be restored but even so, must see. Also, if you're into wooden trinkets, the master craftsmen do them on the spot and you'll only whish to have a bigger suitcase to buy all you can find there for a crazy low price. Helpfully there are stores selling luggage, gotta love the trader spirit. Must go, no question

Hongcun is a UNESCO-designated, ancient village nestled in Huangshan that boasts of exquisite architectural and artistic heritage. It serves as an idyllic backdrop to Ang Lee's movie and features small shops selling artfolk. To gain entrance, tourists should pay 104rmb but may have to contend with the crowds from Chinese tourist groups. Nevertheless, it is worth visiting along with the Huang Shan mountain trip.
The Hongcun village was probably one of the more scenic ancient towns. It felt a bit more commercial but that wasn’t a bad thing for tourists. Food was available nearby and amenities were mostly available. Didn’t enjoy this as much as Xidi, maybe because here a little later but it’s a great place that with a guide - it helps to bring the storied past to life.

Beautiful village, night lights are amazing. Many art students can buy art very cheap off them. Good local foods.
Sam D — Google review
This place is overrated in my opinion. An ancient village is now just full of tourists. Most of the food is basically just tourist trap food. The reflections in the water actually are quite nice though the pictures look better than what it looks like in reality. For some reason foreigners with a passport have 50 percent off their tickets. It’s also not a big place you can probably finish the entire area in about an hour to an hour and a half. Unbelievable that this is 5A tourist destination, definitely not a top tier tourist destination.
Allen L — Google review
Historical village with beautiful architecture. Recommend going in the morning as it became literally too busy to tour by 2:00 pm and that was on a weekday. Definitely worth a trip but don’t expect to spend more than 2-3 hours there unless you’re on a guided tour.
Kevin L — Google review
One of the nicest historical City in China. The world Heritage City is open for public. You can enter most of the areas. The old City is closed and you need an access ticket. On weekends is it very crowded. I recommend to purchase the ticket ahead. You can also book English tour guides. The City goes back to Song dynasty (11 AC). Current city had been built 1403-23 in the Ming Dynasty under emperor Yongle. The city footprint looks like an Ox. Recommend to visit with an overnight stay in closeby modern Hongcun. You can reach the city by car or Bus.

Sanqing Mountain named after 3 peaks, Yujing, Yuxu & Yuhua which are steep & towering is like 3 pure mountains sitting on at top . Our Guide told us Yujing Peak is the highest with an altitude of 1,816.9 meters.. Directory signages and information boards are well displayed for visitors. From the concrete walkway, we can see the mountains in the distance, with strange peaks and rugged rocks, as well as wonders of nature. Every flora & fauna has a information board displayed.!! After an hour walk , we arrived at the edge of Nanqing Garden. We need to climb 600 steps up, for a scenic view of several granite peaks formed more than one billion years ago by geological evolution. However for those who prefers not to climb up to the top, bamboo carrier chair by workers at a fee is available. These strange peaks and rocks are unique feature of Sanqing Mountain in Nanqing Garden. The giant python looks like breaking out of the mountain and wanting to fly into the sky. The Oriental Goddess, beautiful and simple, is like a goddess sitting on the mountain, silently watching all living beings, with a peaceful expression. The hard stone peak presents a plump and soft shape. There were some tents who camp overnight at the peak terrace to view sunrise, sunset and sea of clouds. Our Guide said those views of Strange peaks & rocks, ancient trees & flowers, flowing springs & waterfalls, and sea of clouds & fog waves are well known as the four natural wonders of Sanqing Mountain. Do wear comfortable shoes for this sightseeing, be fully aware whats ahead of you walking within the walkway, like they always said in Chinese…“抬头看树,低头看路”(look up for trees, look down for road). Nevertheless, despite the “breathtaking” walks, Sanqing Mountain is indeed a spectacular and unique China’s 5A level tourist destination !!!!

Mount Sanqing 三清山; pinyin Sānqīng Shān is a renowned Taoist sacred mountain located 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Yushan County in Jiangxi Province, China with outstanding scenery. Sanqing means the "Three Pure Ones" in Chinese as Mount Sanqing is made up of three main summits: Yujing, Yushui, and Yuhua, representing the Taoist trinity. A Chinese phrase “三峰峻拔、如三清列坐其巅” (“Three steep peaks, like the Three Pure Ones sit the summits”) explains why it was named San Qing. Amongst the three hills, the Yujing hill (1817 meters above sea level) is the highest. Mount Sanqing has been classified as a national park of China. It is a famous honeypot as well as a shelter for animals and plants. It contains more than 2300 species of plants and 400 species of vertebrates. The total area of Mount Sanqing is 229 km². Beautiful scenery, even on a rainy day. We stayed in the Hilton at the parks southern entrance. Started with baby in a carrier at 10:30 hiking 5min to the cable car. Ticket per person is 240 RMB (entrance and cable car up and down). We’re back down 15:00 same cable car valley station. We were hiking a loop: climbing up and down the mountain from south cablecar station to the east station. From there back we took the plank way, which takes roughly 1/3 of the time, back to the south cable car.

Bayi Square, the second-largest square in China, covers an impressive 78,000 square meters and is a significant landmark in Nanchang. Constructed between 1977 and 1979, it features stunning fountains, sculptures, and a pedestrian shopping street that make it a popular destination for shopping and entertainment. The square holds historical significance as it commemorates the founding of the People's Liberation Army on August 1st.
most iconic tourist site of Nanchang, a square named "bayi", which means "August 1st", the day when PLA was founded Nanchang was a important city in modern china history and ccp history, from here the Bayi Revolution led by Zhou Enlai and He Long, signals the official start (according to historians and ccp researchers) of militarised confrontation between ccp and kmt there is a momument on the squere, with relief on its four sides of the basement, including several important revolutions in china history, showing the rolling of history never ends transport is fairly convenient there is metro station right at one corner of the squere, but do take note it is hard to find a pedestrian crossing here, so usually it is recommended to come here by metro

The square wasn't super filled with much when I passed through, and honestly the pillar is kind of ugly. It's a little too jagged and brutalist to make a good welcoming city square. There is however a lot to do in the surrounding area near the square.

Bayi Square (八一廣場) is one of Nanchang’s most iconic landmarks and a major tourist attraction… At its center stands the Bayi Memorial Tower, which is topped with a symbolic rifle and the flag of the August 1st Army, serving as a powerful tribute to China's revolutionary history! Locals proudly claim it as the second-largest public square in China, surpassed only by Tiananmen Square in Beijing… Its deep historical significance makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the city 😁 Bayi Square is impressively well-maintained and very clean… while some older (5-years ago) reviews mentioned the presence of beggars, that is no longer the case - as the Government has done a lot to lift its people out of poverty..

The Pavilion of Prince Teng, a 9-story structure originally built in 653 AD by Li Yuanying, is a renowned cultural site in Nanchang City. Rebuilt over two dozen times, it has historical significance dating back to the Tang Dynasty. The famous poem 'Tengwang Ge Xuji' by Wang Bo further adds to its prestige.
The Tengwang Pavilion stands as a majestic testament to ancient Chinese architecture and artistry. Its intricate design, with layers of gracefully curved eaves and vibrant colors, immediately captivates the eye. The pavilion's history is as rich as its appearance, steeped in tales of emperors, poets, and scholars. Ascending to the top floor is an experience in itself. The panoramic view is breathtaking, offering a stunning vista of the Gan River and the surrounding cityscape. The atmosphere is refreshingly invigorating, with a gentle breeze that carries the scent of the river and the whispers of history. Visiting the Tengwang Pavilion is like stepping back in time, a chance to appreciate the beauty of a bygone era while enjoying the tranquility of the present. It's a must-see for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and heritage. ✨Credits to a wonderful Chinese friend of mine✨

The pavilion was built in 2002. You can tell it’s really a modern building rather than a historical one. Overall experience was just so so because the building was small. You can just take the elevator to the 6/F and walk down from the top floor. The view from the top floor was just okay, not really magnificent nor stunning. I think the entrance fee was overpriced for it. The most annoying thing is that there was a music band playing pop and modern music very loudly on the ground floor of the pavilion. You can here the music and busking even on the top floor! This was very unmatch with the environment.

One of 4 Great Towers of China. Especially beautiful around sunset apparently but unfortunately it was a little hazy/gloomy when I was there. Built by 滕王 but in the pavilion, there's a lot more about 王勃, the poet that wrote 滕王阁序 (one can get free entry if you can recite the full script). Entrance fee: ¥50, Audio Guide: ¥30 (for within the pavilion). 5 levels inside the pavilion. Lifts available for the elderly and physically challenged & everyone else climbs. But no big deal, it's an easy climb. Level 2 - 人杰图, a full painting of talents born here, such as 欧阳修; you may not know his name but you'll surely have heard before the phrase 醉翁之意不在酒, and that was his. Level 3 - 宴客厅, what used to be a hall for hosting. At this level, one can also access an outdoor viewing deck. Level 4 - 地灵图, a painting of 7 famous mountains in Jiangxi including 三清山 - 天下第一仙山 and 庐山. Level 5 - 寿图,百福屏 and again an outdoor viewing deck. There's also a mezzanine level from here with 2 wall murals made of 唐三彩 ceramic tiles. Then it's all the way back down to the exit at the basement.

As documented, Tengwang Pavilion or Pavilion of Prince Teng is one of the 3 great towers of southern China. From the vast complex area, the Pavilion looks like a 3-storey building with a corridor. However as you proceed towards the building , it is on a pedestal which resembles an ancient wall. It is a 9 storeys building, floor by floor are several display of paintings, ancient costumes, porcelains and murals & portraits of 80 outstanding figures & scholars in Jiangxi from the Qin to Ming & Tang Dynasty on the walls and a 28mx1.52m Bluestone Brick Carving picture of Flourishing Jiangxi in Ming Dynasty. As Prince Teng , was good at painting, he likes to paint butterflies , there is a a Picture of A 100 of butterflies & flowers (Polished Lacquer Painting) 5.4x2.0m Picture on wall displayed with some antiques tables and chairs. A special mention on wall was written for Architect Mr Liang Sicheng on his remarkable contributions to the re-design on its main structure of Rebuilding in 1942. Strolling along the corridors, the panoramic view of the city and bridges across Gan River is especially magnificient. Several poets who have all witnessed the view standing upon Tengwang Pavilion left behind beautiful verses for later generations. Especially the poems handwritten by Su Shi (Su DongPo) carved onto copper plates, are prominently displayed on wall with his statue standing infront inside the hall. Alot of stairs to climb , do requires more time to browse through all displays, but needless to say the stunning views and its unique architecture are worth the effort!!

Amazing place to visit at Nanchang. The view is just absolutely stunning! Try not to go during hot weather, else you will experience sauna inside 🤭

Even though reconstructed it is worth visiting. Sail by at night and it is beautifully lighted. Come in the day and tour the 7 storey pavilion. Each level tells a different part of the history and story of the pavilion, its occupants and buildings. If you like Chinese poetry and history this is the place for you. It got famous because of a poem written by a travelling poet whilst attending a banquet at this pavilion. Supposedly he composed it in one sitting of the banquet. Hire a personal guide from the place or use Google translate for the plaques on the wall. Note lifts don’t work well so expects lots of staircase climbing. English translation of famous poem attached

Huge, imposing tower overlooking the river in the center of Nanchang. Wonderful place to enjoy a nice afternoon, and enjoy the historicity of the area.
