Babak Fort

Mentioned on
1 list
Fortress
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Babak Fort, also known as Babak Castle, is a medieval citadel situated atop a mountain surrounded by lush forests and deep valleys. The ascent to the fort is challenging but rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the castle and the surrounding mountains. This ancient fortress holds historical significance as it was once the stronghold of 9th-century Azeri hero Babak Khorramdin, known for his resistance against Arab invaders.
The most important thing you should know about it is there are different ways to get to the top if you like hiking and have time to can start from the hiking start point and it will take about 3 hours to get to the castle but if you don't have time you can pay the cars and they will take you higher then you should hike about 45min to 1 hours to the castle. If you have time I recommend you to get there by yourself because the cars are not very good and normally they charge you too much for a short distance.
Banafsheh Y — Google review
The more than a millinuim-old castle is a magnificent place to visit, a reminiscent of one of the most well-known resistence movements in the history of Iran; besides the scenery of Arasbaran forest, the hills, and the 400-600 meter deep valleys is breathtaking. You can enjoy all this only if you choose the right time to climb. Spring is probably good toming and to avoid heat I suggest very early in the morning right after an exciting night stay in nomad tents (called Oba) and a local breakfast. Another option is late afternoon but remember that you will need to spare at least four hours before dark. The easiest way to climb is to hire an off-road car, which is easy to find and not very expensive, and start your ascend from the first station to save energy. The hike is going to take you like 50-70 minutes depending on your pace. You can find a cafe, drinkable water, and toilets on your way up but prefebaly carry your own bottle of water and some biscuits. Don't even think of the climb without a camera; I'm sure you'll like the view.
M.Mahdi H — Google review
Great looking castle built with stones. Lots of landscapes to capture. It's about 2 to 3 hours hiking from the main road side but there were some offroad taxis which gave you a ride and made your hiking much less. Also there were guys who sell water and drinks on the way in the mountains!
Kayvan — Google review
Babak castle was constructed on top of a mountain with 2600 meter height, near Kaleybar. The castle has been used in Sasanian era and before that in Parthian age. This castle has adopted its name from Babak Khoramdin, a patriot and militant leader against Arab invaders. Here, there has been a two-story castle. Before reaching to the gate of castle, you should pass a route which is faced in front of you as a narrow 200 meter corridor. This corridor was in a place which were under control of guardians in the past in order to check all traffic there. After passing this corridor, there is another entrance with irregular stairs by which you can arrive the castle. Then, you have the main hall around which there are seven rooms. These rooms all reach to central salon. In east of palace, you will see other facilities which include some rooms and reservoirs and roofs of reservoirs are chevron and rocking. In northwest of palace, there are stairs which is counted as accessibility road to other stories of palace, but not much has remained today. Two half-columns you see in this part has been a location for sentinel in order to have control over everywhere. This castle reminds the bravery of famous Iranian warlord Babak Khoramdin, the leader of red-clad group. The unattainable castle of Babak was about 22 years unavailable to Arabs and resisted against Arabs. Babak castle was recorded in list of nationsl, cultural and historical opuses in 1345 (1966) and its repair was ordered by cultural heritage organization of east Azerbaijan in order to make it now one of the most tourist attracting places in province.
Ehsan A — Google review
Very exciting place. Strongly recommend to visit it. End of summer or about the April, best weather condition for visiting. Last 3 -4 kilometers of the road from Kalibar city to the parking of the site, you need off-road car or drive very slowly. From the parking (a rancher village عشایر - Nomads) to the Castle you should climb and walk at least 2 hours, so you need 2 additional hours to come back to your car before the sunset. Get water and some snacks with yourself. There is an off-road Taxis station in a restaurant, near the beginning of the non-asphalt road.
Arashmid N — Google review
Babak Castle is probably the most famous attraction in this region and the reason why people choose to travel there. Overall I think it's worth it. The view from the top is simply amazing, also picturing to oneself how they once constructed the castle and lived up there; unbelievable. A few things of note: The castle can be reached from Kaleybar itself, though that's quite the hike (I estimate around 3h one way), or from further up the road towards the castle (still more than 1h) or lastly with the help of a local that takes you up the last bit with a 4 wheel drive (price around 60'000 Tomans). From there it's a bit more than 30min to the castle. Since it's quite high up in the mountains, prepare accordingly. It can get cold and windy, slippery of course in rainy conditions. Though not an archeologist myself, I'm still quite sure that most of the remaining structure was "rebuilt" at some point or at least reinforced and thus can't really be called original anymore.
Nicolas H — Google review
Babak Castle and the walk up are a great experience. Hikers can walk up in about 60-90 minutes. The early part of the path is stone stairs, then you continue over a rocky path. If it’s foggy, don’t despair: you might get lucky and break through the clouds as you reach the castle and be rewarded with views from on top of the clouds! :-)
Bertram K — Google review
An ancient castle with a height of more than 2,300 meters is a symbol of Iranians' endurance and standing against the aggressors. To reach the castle, you have to go through a relatively long path in the form of stairs, which will undoubtedly be worth it. It will be a very beautiful perspective in your publication.

Halidzor Fortress

Church
Sights & Landmarks
Halidzor Fortress offers a scenic 4x4 track that leads to a narrow path into the valley. Along the way, you'll encounter a small waterfall and pass through thin woodland before reaching cultivated fields at the valley's bottom. The path then transforms into a 4x4 track, taking you past forests and into grassland with the village of Bekh situated up the hillside.
This is a beautiful, atmospheric site — an ancient fortress perched in the middle of the forests and mountains with great views of Kapan. You can see fortress walls and an old church among the ruins. I posted a few photos that show the route. A few tips: If you have a high-clearance 4×4 or a sturdy truck you can drive from the main road to within the fortress entrance (about 3,000 meters of rough road). If you don’t have an off-road vehicle, expect a roughly 3 km hike one way. Wear good hiking shoes, take water, and allow extra time for the climb and the views.

Lake Göygöl

Mentioned on
1 list
Lake
Nature & Parks
Nestled within Göygöl National Park, Lake Göygöl is a natural mountain lake renowned for its crystalline water and the presence of endemic trout. It is an ideal destination to relax and unwind throughout the year. The journey to reach the site from Ganja or Goygol is incredibly easy, and visitors can explore short walking trails to immerse themselves in nature's beauty. During fall, the area transforms into a magical landscape with colorful leaves painting a breathtaking picture.
If you're looking for a serene and beautiful getaway, this spot is perfect. The breathtaking views are worth every moment, providing a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle. The sounds of birds chirping and the gentle flow of water create a tranquil environment, perfect for relaxation and reflection. Less crowded, super green and incredibly picturesque, this location offers a perfect blend of nature and serenity. Highly recommended for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape. Don't miss out on this hidden gem!
Sadaf M — Google review
It's a national park where people cannot walk anywhere, every path is blocked. Coming a long way for a 20- minute experience is a joke, doesn't worth your time. Added one star because the lake is beautiful.
Anar A — Google review
Beautiful but not a lot to do just seeing part of lake , on the roadside there are a lot restaurants some serve good food for travelers price are okay for locals it is expensive. We paid around 70 manat for 3 people.(6 barbecues skewers, 2 kete, some drinks and tea)
Yashar H — Google review
Very nice and beautiful lake. Unfortunately very hot on summer time. Water color is wonderful. There is a cafe right near the lake. There is a kids playground, but again right in sun and due to heat it’s not possible to play there. Entrance is paid, 2 manat per person. Kids are free. 2 manat for car parking.
Azar S — Google review
Wow factor... This place is worth visiting. Landscape cant be described in words. Its a national forest and they are taking good care of it. There is an entry ticket which is mkre or less 10 to 15 manat depending on nunber of people visiting. At one point cars will be parked and then you would have to walk down the track to the lake. I also saw old Russain car providing taxi services to the lake. However, I would recommend to walk down the lake since the track itself is amazing, cool and breathtaking. Highly recommended for nature lovers. The only problem you might face is language barrier. Hardly anyone speaks english over there.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
It’s a nice historical place. Nizami ganjavi was a writer and poet who quoted “laila majnu”, the arab afsanih’. The place is free to go. No ticket is needed. The museum is in front of the tomb. You can visit without ticket and appointment. The plus point is that you are allowed to take photos 📸. There is also a park outside and a small water fountain.

Amazing structure, but confusing to reach by public transport the bus i took, took the turn before the Nizami mesuleum and i have to walk almost 700 metres. The staff at the museum was very cooperative, even it was time to close the museum a guy open all the lights and show me the museum offer cold water. They also guide where to take the bus for going back to the city Again the property is very well maintained, neat and clean. A must visit when you are in Ganja city

Its nothing that special but at the same time it is. Unfortunately much going on at the sight but it's free to enter and wander around. Plenty of parking and easy to enter from highway out of town.

I came to Ganja only to visit the tomb of the great poet and express my gratitude to him, Nizami Ganjavi. Rested in a calm place, his poems and the marks he made in persian literature are eternal. Birds chirping and colorful reflection on the walls and down on his tomb, give you moments to keep still and appreciate the presence of the beautiful sleeping soul. If you are in Ganja, I believe it is a must to give Nizami Ganjavi Mousoleum a visit.
Maryam A — Google review
The place is beautiful but was almost empty when we visited. The architecture is great, place is spacious, and very neat. However no one to guide you there. We visited both tomb, and museum. There is no one at the tomb, free to visit no charges. In museum, it costs 2 manat per person, 2 floors containing details about Nizam Gencevi 12th century poet of Ganja however the employees there don't speak or understand English so you are almost at your own. So its worth while to visit if you are in Ganja, because Nizami Gencevi is most famous person in their history.
Faheem A — Google review

The Shah Abbas Square Named After the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (1557- 1628) seized Ganja in 1606. After his ascent to the throne in 1587, he did a lot of work to expand, strengthen and develop the country. Shah Abbas Square is a square located in the historical center of Ganja city. Consisted of a mosque, a bathhouse, the Tomb of Javad Khan, fountains and other buildings. The mosque of Shah Abbas was built in 1606, There was a market square surrounded by benches and centuries-old plane trees.

Horrible toilets. There is a rude lady in front who charges money. Of course the double price for tourists. Avoid if you can these toilets.
Arne R — Google review
Historical mosque located in center of the city. Free to enter, also for non-Muslims. Scarf required for women. Its not anything special inside the the outside is nice, building made from bricks.
Paul H — Google review
Beautiful historical mosque.
Ameer A — Google review
The Shah Abbas (Juma) Mosque in the heart of Ganja is a captivating blend of history, architecture, and spirituality. Built in 1606 on the orders of Shah Abbas I and designed by the distinguished architect Sheikh Bahauddin, this red-brick mosque exemplifies the Arran architectural style with striking portal-domed composition. Its imposing twin minarets (added in 1776) rise to 22 m and serve as silent guardians over the serene courtyard . Inside, the heavy walls—some up to 3 m thick—house a prayer hall divided by a wooden screen and a rare shebeke-style oak mimbar, carved without a single nail, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship. A fascinating natural feature is how the mosque’s shadow disappears from its west wall at noon—a traditional sign marking the time for Zuhar prayer. Surrounded by historic madrasah and a small bathhouse (now museum), the mosque complex feels like walking into living heritage.

We had a nice look at this Mosque on our walking tour. It is also known Juma Mosque or Friday Mosque in Ganja. It was constructed in 1606 on the orders of Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty & designed by the renowned architect Sheikh Bahaddin Muhammad Amili. It was built in the Arran architectural school style, using red brick, with portal-dome traditions and intricate decorative element. Two minarets were added in 1776. It’s a nice peaceful place.

The campground features charming tree houses and sculptures, with friendly hosts who engage in interesting conversations. For a fee, guests can stay overnight in huts or set up tents with complimentary coffee and tea.
Perfect campground ! It's open all year long. We paid 2000 dram per person to plant our tent l. It also included free coffee and tea, as well as the excursion to the cave !

Very good place for outdoor activity and relaxing in the nature. Has all the neccessay you need in such a place (zip line, horses, hiking and much more). You will need off road vehicle if you want to move there by yourself or use the services of travel companies.
Arthur T — Google review
Amazing. Beautiful. Natural. The people who run the place are super helpful and took us offroading back to Ijevan for a reasonable price and set up a taxi for us to get back to Yerevan. 100 percent worth the hike.
Bruno — Google review
I adore this place!!! If you want to stay in the camp, you have to pay 1000 AMD. There are some pretty sculptures in there. The small tree houses are great! The two men who actually live there, are very kind and you can discuss any topic with them for hours! But if you don't wish to spend money on anything, you can stay near the waterfall for free. The river here is very cold. It is very good to swim there after 1 or 1,5 hour of hiking to get to the campground. There is also a small cave full of carved ornaments, pictures depicting some faces. It used to be a hermitage for the Christian monks. It has got some Pre-Christian carvings in it.
Hayk G — Google review
Horrible service. We wanted to have a look around to see if we could stay there, but the guard was very rude and demanded that we pay just to enter the campground and simply have a look around, which we obviously refused to do.
Vache D — Google review
The hike is somewhat challenging and takes about an hour to get to. There is also a fee of 1000AMD(~$2) per person to cover the maintenance and upkeep of the camp and the surroundings. You can stay overnight in one of the huts for 5000AMD. Overall very nice place to visit with a group or a date.

Yell Extreme Park offers an amazing adventure package including 5 zip lines, via ferrata, and rope park. The via ferrata may be challenging for children without climbing experience but with the guidance of a skilled instructor, it can be conquered. Weekday visits are recommended to avoid long waits due to large weekend crowds. Visitors praise the thrilling activities such as paintball and zip lining, even for those with fear of heights. The friendly and attentive guides enhance the overall experience.
If you love adrenaline rush then This PARK IS A MUST!!! My journey there was just amazing! I loved the experience! Thank you to my instructor Nathalia ❤️

wow! The ziplines were amazing. The guides were very nice and helpful. It was my first time at 64. so the first one was scary a bit...and the walks between the last two were tiring( we did 5!!) but the guide was patient with our group and the views were spectacular. loved it
Judy E — Google review
Great place to enjoy the great nature of Ijevan (Tavush region). Extreme activities are well organized and they give enough adrenaline to the participants. The package of Zip-line activities (includes 5 zip-line, rope park and via ferrata) costs 20000 AMD, which is fair and good price also for locals. I enjoyed the park and will suggest everyone to be there at least once.
Suren S — Google review
I only visited the zip line and can't comment on the rest of the park. Zip lines are nice, there is 5 of them and you need approximately one hour to get on all of them. This all seems nice but I only put one star? Check the picture, this is carabiner for the secondary rope. I only noticed it after the first line and notified the staff which dismissed my concerns saying that this is still good. Because of this I can't really recommend the park.
Matevž M — Google review
Our teenage kids did the whole package: roller zip line, 5 zip lines, rock climbing, and the off-road truck ride. They also did the1.5 hour horse ride (this was managed through the Apaga Resort). A very fun day. A heads up: The off-roading certainly isn't for young kids. There was less to do for our 10 year old: roller zip line and 3 other zip lines. The rope park has been dismantled and is no longer offered. We were a little disappointed with that, since their website is not updated. Note that there is a weight limit for the zip line and climbing activities. Call ahead for details.

We have had a wonderfull experience thanks to the amazing guides that accompanied us. They were really cheerfull and carefull. We took the route of the Adventure Pass and it was amazing! I was doubting whether the adrenaline rush would be enough and if it would be challenging, but it sure was! Really a great experience and I will surely recommend anyone to try it out! Thank you a lot for the great day!
Melissa Z — Google review
Amazing experience! We are a family of 3 with a teenager aged 13, took the adventure package: 5 zip lines, via ferrata and rope park. The via ferrata was very difficult for a child (no climbing experience), but under the wise guidance of the guide Artem she managed and was very happy! For adults with no climbing experience it’s fine unless fear of heights. I recommend visiting on weekdays, because on the weekend there are large groups and the wait is long on each spot.

Makaravank Monastery Complex

Makaravank Monastery Complex is a stunning religious site nestled on a forested hillside in Armenia. The complex, built from the 7th to 12th centuries, features intricate animal and floral sculptures adorning its architecture. Visitors can take a scenic road that winds through the natural surroundings to reach the monastery's gate. The serene location offers a peaceful atmosphere for meditation and reflection.
We spent the night in the tent, just to be able to see the church early in the morning when there are no visitors. The forest around it is magical, the natural settings have certainly inspired some of the ornamentation used in the architecture. If you camp in the forest make sure you be careful with the tall grass (especially in spring time) as there are some very small parasites which we only noticed when we returned.

Haghpat Monastery Complex

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Armenia, Haghpat Monastery Complex is a remarkable medieval site that dates back to the tenth century. This architectural gem showcases multiple structures, including an impressive church and a bell tower, all offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area. While it shares similarities with its nearby counterpart, Sanahin Monastery—just a short 30-minute drive away—Haghpat stands out as a must-visit landmark in its own right.
Visiting Haghpat Monastery was a truly fascinating experience. The architecture is stunning, rich in detail, and history. One of the most memorable moments was discovering an image of Jesus on the wall, which added a deeply spiritual touch to our visit. It's a place where history, faith, and art come together beautifully.

The Haghpat monastery is a UNESCO site which is beautiful, quiet and spiritual. We visited in October when the valley around was in different shades of yellow. Take a moment and enjoy the beauty around you. The altar is calm and peaceful. Entrance is free

Haghpat Monastery is an old and beautiful church complex in northern Armenia, built way back in the 900s. It's a UNESCO site because of its amazing old buildings, like the main church. Worth a visit, amazing.
Yossi E — Google review
We were there at 10 am on Sunday and it was already open. No tickets are needed. Enter is free. The trick is to be there before 11 and avoid the crowding caused by tour buses from Tbilisi and Yerevan. It’s hard to describe in words how beautiful this place is. Surrounded by lovely hill, it’s very peaceful.

The complex was smaller than expected and needed some basic maintenance. Several buildings but all very close to each other. Maybe I was expecting more after the visit to the more impressive Sanahin monastery.

A day trip to this part of Armenia would consist mostly of monasteries. We took a day tour from Tbilisi to collect stamps on our passports without knowing much what to expect. The nature is so green around here. The monasteries look ancient and full of history. However, after a whole day of visiting different monastries, it got a little bit repetitive. That said, our overall experience was good.

David Gareji monastery

Mentioned on

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
Located at the border with Azerbaijan, David Gareji monastery is a 6th-century complex carved into a cliff against a desert backdrop. The secluded monastery, still inhabited by monks, features excavated cells and utility rooms in dense limestone layers. Accessible via paved roads, it offers limited visibility due to monk residency but boasts beautiful grounds and a church. Visitors recommend taking a walking path for better views and suggest hiring an English-speaking driver for historical insights.
We went around 5pm with almost no other people around. Monastery is quite limited in terms of what you can see. There is a nice hike up to the back but the really nice views are restricted by border patrol. The view over the rainbow mountains from just down the road are nice! Free entry and they have a shop that sells drinks and snacks. All staff speaks very little English, which was surprising to us.
Willem L — Google review
The view is nice but not as spectacular as you might expect. The church itself is new. The rest of the monastery is quite nice.
Chrysa T — Google review
Very beautiful remote monetary that part of it is carved in the stone. There is a scenic hike up to it and than you go to see it inside. Near by there are beautiful and colorful dunes. There is a trail that you can take between them, the nature here is like magic. Also the whole region’s natural landscape is so different than other regions in Georgia , it makes the place special.
Slava M — Google review
Remote location, access is limited to part of the monastery. Very pretty and impressive. Also, right opposite of the monastery there are mineral-rich mountains that have spectacular color differences. Very pretty!
Chen Y — Google review
It was a worth experience visiting here, the hike was a bit exhausting for me but in the end I enjoyed it. There are rainbow mountains next to the monastery which looks beautiful.
Mufazzal A — Google review
Great views from and around the monastery. There isn’t any tickets so its free to enter. Paths outside of the monastery are slippery so don’t go in sandles (a lot of people were there with crocs/sandles and had issues) and I also recommend taking long pants because there is a lot of weeds which are sharp and paths are narrow. But the view from up top are great! If you need water there is small monk shop near the monastery.
Nejc L — Google review
One of the most wonderful place I have visited so far! Extremely peaceful, especially if you visit the place at the non-peak tourist time. The drive from Tbilisi to David Gareji was as beautiful and scenic. We took the alternate route which was 20mins slower than the best route option showed in Google Maps, which turned out to be absolutely wonderful. No tickets required. Core memory! :)
Shruti S — Google review
Stunning views of spectacular hills. The drive to the monastery is all very accessible roads. No tickets needed to enter the monastery, but be aware that there is not much in the area, so it's recommended to bring drinks and snacks, (and 0,50 for the bathroom). For those who are a little agile, there is a small cave up the hill with an altar, but it's a little climb. The view of the monastery is great from that hill. (!) You might walk into some military since you're really close to the border, but everyone I walked into was really friendly. (!) Be aware there are lots of venomous snakes in the area, so watch your step if you go off trail.

Ujarma fortress, one of the oldest fortresses in Georgia and the world, dates back to the 3rd century. It is situated near the Gombori Pass and was once home to King Vakhtang Gorgasali. The site features medieval ruins, tower remnants, and an ancient church atop a hill. Despite its historical significance, access to the fortress can be challenging due to a poorly maintained path from the parking area.
Fortress with first layers dating back to III-IV centuries. One of the best preserved of its time and size, with breathtaking views. A must-see!

Beautiful fortress, easy to reach. Going up isn't hard but when you come down be careful, the path is a little slippery at times. The views are beautiful, the aura at the location is very pleasant. The tickets cost 10gel for adults and there is free WC not in the best condition. There is some path going further down to the river but have not checked it, maybe you will find something interesting there. I expected much less but the location is indeed beautiful.

I visited Ujarma Fortress during my trip through the Kakheti region, and it was a fascinating experience. This ancient fortress, built by King Aspagur of Iberia in the 3rd-4th centuries AD, holds a rich history. It was expanded and fortified by King Vakhtang I Gorgasali in the 5th century, serving as a royal residence and key defensive structure. The fortress is strategically perched on a hilltop, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The complex includes remnants of the royal palace, defensive walls, towers, and the Church of St. Nino. The preservation efforts have made the site accessible and informative, with information boards and guided tours available. Ujarma Fortress is easily accessible by road from Tbilisi and Telavi, making it a perfect day trip destination. If you're a history enthusiast or simply love exploring ancient sites with breathtaking views, Ujarma Fortress is a must-visit!

If you are on your way to Gambori pass, this place is a must to stop by. There is a small ticket booth and tickets sell for 10 Gel for adults. Kids under 5 are free. There is an old church at this fortress as well as a few bridges and panaromic viewing areas. The whole feel of this place is medieval and that's what I like about this fortress.
Tayyab Q — Google review
Medieval ruins, remnants of towers and a whole church on top of the hill. Entrance costs 10 GEL per adult and 1 GEL per child. A path from the parking up to the Ujarma fortress is nearly nonexistent, turning dangerous after rain. Yet we enjoyed climbing up and down new sturdy stairs built towards the lower towers. Those are unfinished yet, I guess next spring there will be longer flights of stairs after getting financing. Free toilets are available at the parking level.

Where the Mountains Get Playful Oh, Gombori Pass (უღ. გომბორი)! Buckle up, buttercups, because this isn't just a road; it's Georgia's answer to a roller coaster, but with more sheep and significantly better views. As you ascend, winding your way through the mountains, you might feel like you've accidentally driven into a postcard... a slightly dizzying, incredibly green postcard. The road twists and turns with all the enthusiasm of a puppy chasing its tail. One moment you're admiring a breathtaking panorama of the Alazani Valley, the next you're squinting to see around a curve, wondering if that patch of fog is mystical or just bad driving conditions. It’s a constant battle between "Wow, look at that!" and "Please don't let me drive off the edge!" But honestly, the views are worth every stomach lurch. The air is crisp, the mountains are majestic, and you'll emerge on the other side feeling like a seasoned explorer, possibly with a slight need for a strong coffee. Or, you know, more Georgian wine. It's a journey, darling, not just a drive!
