If you’re heading to Cabo Espichel, make sure to catch the sunset. The rugged cliffs and vast ocean create a stunning backdrop as the sun sinks below the horizon. Amazing views from all spots - Church, Lighthouse, the Dino cliffs. Because the last few minutes of the road getting there is kinda empty, there's a true 'edge of the x' feel to the place.
Ehud R — Google review
Awesome views of the ocean. Nearby there is a sanctuary, light house and some dinosaurs footprints. Due to its location it might get a little windy. There is free parking lot and some places where you can get a drink and some snacks
Marcio M — Google review
An interesting place, with an abandoned monastery, several chapels and a beautiful lighthouse. Above all, the steep high cliffs of interesting colors fascinate...
Jože H — Google review
Well worth a visit. The view over the ocean , from the steep cliffs is spectacular. It is also home to the abbey of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel

Amazing place that gives you a good walk, fresh air, loads to look at and learn. The little wild flowers including wild thyme was the icing on the cake 💕
Susan H — Google review
Beautiful views here...besides visiting the sanctuary or the Lagosteiros beach (very difficult access) don't miss the dinosaur footprints and tail tracks, not far away from there...try to visit on a clear not too windy day... Trekking around the Cape 😜 is definitely worth the effort of climbing up and down 😉. You will discover new amazing views with lots of history behind if you are in to it. Dinosaurs 🦕🦖🦖 set their tracks n footprints in this area over 150 million years ago... Still visible!!!

Unique Atlantic ocean beach with river-fed lagoons behind it, offering parking & nearby eateries.
Beautiful mix of lake and ocean beaches. Not too much in the area though, so if you don’t have a reservation/booking at one of the restaurants you should bring food. Parking in the area is a bit limited on nice days, you may have to circle around for awhile.
Sierra H — Google review
Beautiful lake in Sesimbra, not very crowded and with a delicious water. It's a bit far from Lisbon so if you have the chance to use a car do it. Otherwise, you will spend over an hour to get there by public transport. Or you can order an Uber or Bolt like I did (if you're going with other people you can share the trip so it's cheaper). They have toilets as well, which is awesome. Bring your own food and drinks.
D B — Google review
The lake looks beautiful and the water is warm, which is exactly why we came, but unfortunately, the high concentration of algae really ruined it for us. You can’t get into the water without walking through a thick, smelly layer, which was disappointing. It’s a shame, because the setting is lovely, but the algae buildup makes swimming unpleasant.
Lavale — Google review
Beautiful place, with sandy beach as well as activities on the water, such as kayaking. We hired a kayak from the small place opposite. Nice cafe nearby as well. Great day out.
Muhammed P — Google review
Amazing place to go for beach. Here you can choose between sea or the lagon. Perfect for weekends since there is always place and parking for the car.
Paulo M — Google review
One of the highlights of this beach is that you can choose whether you want the beach with access to the ocean or to the nearby lagoon - this makes it a perfect spot for families. The beach is clean and not very busy which makes it a great place to enjoy and relax. Would highly recommend.

Arco da Rua Augusta

Mentioned on
+58 other lists
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Arco da Rua Augusta is an elaborate 18th-century triumphal arch adorned with sculpted figures and offers stunning views of the city center. It is located in Lisbon's main square, Praca do Comercio, which boasts impressive 18th-century architecture and mosaic-like cobblestones. The arch provides panoramic views of the square, the riverfront, and Sao Jorge Castle. Nearby attractions include the bustling shopping street of Rua Augusta and the historic Elevador de Santa Justa.
Highly recommend visiting early on the morning. At around 8-9am, the square and the surroundings are rather void of people and the sun hits the Arc perfectly enough for some good photos. The LISBOA sign is photographable without anyone and is a great opportunity this early in the morning. I’ve seen later in the day that it can be near impossible to have a good unobstructed view of the area. It’s breathtaking and very well kept and clean. On an evening, the side of the square is lined with open air al fresco restaurants, many seafood and catering to all tastes. (And without any of the pushy restaurant salesmen!) A must see!
Danny W — Google review
This magnificent triumphal arch leads you from the city center to the banks of the Tagus River, via the famous Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square). At its summit are sculptures by Célestin Anatole Calmels, a French sculptor who spent much of his life in Portugal, representing Glory and crowning Genius and Valor. Those below, by Vítor Bastos, depict some of the country's most important historical figures: Nuno Álvares Pereira, Viriate, Vasco da Gama, and the Marquis of Pombal. To the left is the Tagus River, and to the right, the Douro River. These two rivers marked the boundary of the region inhabited by the Lusitanians, and the inscription at the top of the arch refers to the Portuguese colonial empire and the discovery of new peoples and cultures : “VIRTVTIBVS MAIORVM VT SIT OMNIBVS DOCVMENTO.PPD”, meaning : “The virtues of our elders, to serve as a lesson for all. (Dedication at public spending)”.

On our last visit to Lisbon, we spent several days touring around the city center including the area around this grand arch and the plaza. Very busy area for the tourists as photo ops in every direction. Grand beautiful arch and gorgeous buildings all around. Several restaurants open on the plaza. Maybe the most picturesque spot in Lisbon.
THE E — Google review
Stunning architecture, well worth taking the time to come and see it. When coming to Lisbon is well worth making sure you include a vist here on your list. It does get very busy, but the street is wide with lots of room so you dont end up bumping into people. I also found it easy to stop and take pictures with out getting in anyone's way, or anyone getting in my way. If you're coming here on a sunny day, make sure you have you're sunglasses. I forgot mine and found it to be extremely bright!
Ellie G — Google review
According da Rua Augusta is definitely worth a visit -you can pay a small entrance fee and go up to the top. Once your up there you have a panoramic view of the city of Lisbon. Its a great spot for photos/videos and gives you a birds eye perspective of the city - the praca comercio, tagus river and rooftops of downtown Lisbon.
Katherine J — Google review
The Rua Augusta Arch is a stone, memorial arch-like, historical building and visitor attraction in Lisbon, Portugal, on the Praça do Comércio. It was built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. You can take the elevator above the arch for splendid city views
* B — Google review
One of the most important and iconic landmarks of Lisbon. A beautiful square right in front of the Tagus River, perfect at any time for a lovely stroll!
Dimmm167 — Google review
The Arco da Rua Augusta is one of Lisbon’s most iconic monuments. Standing between Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio, it’s beautiful to admire from below, with detailed sculptures and rich history. Even better, you can go up to the top for a small fee. The views are spectacular: Rua Augusta on one side, the vast Praça do Comércio and Tagus River on the other. A must-visit spot that perfectly captures the spirit of Lisbon.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, Castelo de São Jorge is an 11th-century Moorish castle and former royal residence. Visitors can explore palace ruins and an archaeological museum within its walls. The castle offers panoramic views of Lisbon and is a popular tourist attraction in the historic Alfama district. Kids will enjoy racing around the ramparts, sitting on giant cannons, and using periscopes to observe daily life in the city below.
Very beautiful castle and lots of places to walk around and take photos. They also have peacocks wandering around which is very pretty. Ample places to sit and I saw two washroom locations. Incredible views of the city. Also has a small museum to look at (~3 rooms) Audio tours are available to listen to. In my opinion, well worth the visit!
HTS L — Google review
After visiting the Lisbon cathedral, we walked up to the arch entrance of the castle - it’s walkable but be wary of a steep trek from the cathedral. We were able to use our Lisboa Card for free entry, which was a great bonus. The castle grounds offer incredible views across the city and plenty of historic areas to explore. There are loads of great photo opportunities, and the grounds are home to around two dozen peacocks and peahens. I’ve never seen so many in one place before, and they really add to the atmosphere. The small museum inside is interesting and gives some insight into the history of the castle, including who built it, what it was used for, and a look at some of the pottery and tiles found on site. It’s also well air-conditioned, which makes it a nice break from the heat outside. Be warned that the toilets are pretty unpleasant and located down some narrow, slightly sketchy stairs. The main castle area itself is mostly empty, with only the walls open to walk along. The views are fantastic from up there, but it’s definitely not ideal if you’re afraid of heights. The walkways are narrow and can get crowded, and there’s only a railing to hold on to. We left just before sunset, and as we did, the queue to get in had grown a lot. Leaving early worked out well, as we were able to catch the bus back to the Rua with no hassle
Danny W — Google review
What an awesome experience this was! Was there on a Tuesday afternoon and the crowds were light. Very easy to walk around and explore. (Although be warmed the steps are pretty steep and some have no handrails....careful! Sights were amazing and there is a QR Code.at.the entrance that gives you a self guided audio your with anlot of history. Awesome place and highly recommended!
Scott S — Google review
Worth a visit! Castelo de São Jorge is a stunning historical place with breathtaking views over Lisbon and the River. Walking through the castle walls and towers and seeing the colors of the houses is really amazing. The gardens are beautifully maintained, and there are plenty of spots to take in panoramic views and photos. The audio guide added great context to the visit. Expect some walking and a few stairs, but it’s all part of the experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Lisbon!
A A — Google review
Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon is worth a visit for the views alone. Sitting on a hill in the Alfama district, it gives you a clear line of sight across the city and the Tagus River. There is something about seeing the red rooftops stretch out below that makes it easy to understand why Lisbon feels so special. The castle itself is interesting, even if it is not the most polished attraction. Walking along the ramparts and towers, you can sense the layers of history that have shaped this place. Roman, Moorish, and medieval influences are all visible in the walls and fortifications. The layout is straightforward, but exploring the nooks and stairs gives a sense of how people lived and defended the city centuries ago. One of the unexpected highlights is the peacocks. They wander freely across the grounds and gardens, adding a bit of life and color to the stone and brick. It is a small detail, but it makes the visit feel a little more playful. If you are in Lisbon, give yourself an hour or two to explore. Wear comfortable shoes because the paths are cobbled, and take your time to enjoy the history, the views, and the peacocks. Castelo de São Jorge is real, atmospheric, and memorable.
John J — Google review
This castle is situated on one of the highest hills and offers stunning panoramic view of lisbon. You can walk over the castle and towers which was fun. The place is overall well maintained and worth a visit. The route to get to the castle is walkable but be aware of the steep path. We visited this place during sunset and it was absolutely lovely and highly recommend visiting around sunset time. No advance booking required and we got the ticket upon arrival.
Reza N — Google review
Wow fantastic views and castle. Definitely recommend!! You can climb the walls via a staircase but if you can't walk in staircases you can admire the view over Lisbon from around the castle and they are just as good. Wheelchair and stroller friendly. Peacocks and their babies are also there to admire. We took the metro to end stop at blue line, Santa Apolonia, and walked up to the castle in Alfama. Beautiful walk passing narrow streets, small tourist shops with great prices and arriving at the castle. Recommend going early as the lines later build up! They have adult, child and senior tickets available.
Hanne H — Google review
Beautiful castle in the centre of the city. Very nice a relaxing away from the hustle of the city below. Despite the queues to get in didn't feel too crowded, lovely views in all directions. We got there early in the morning, there was a small queue but went fast. There is online booking available for a small fee, we did look whilst in the queue and might have saved us a couple of minutes to skip the queue but not really worth it. Perhaps later in the day or on busier days.

Alfama, one of Lisbon's oldest areas, is a charming district with steep streets lined with traditional craft shops and cafes. The historic no. 28 tram winds through the neighborhood up to São Jorge Castle, offering stunning views from Miradouro da Graça terrace. Despite the mid-18th century earthquake, Alfama has preserved its medieval appearance with chaotic alleyways and small houses creating a village-like atmosphere.

The National Tile Museum, located in the old convent of Madre de Deus, offers a fascinating journey through the history of decorative azulejo tiles. Housed in a 16th-century monastery with a stunning chapel, the museum showcases the evolution of glazed tile techniques and their significance in Portuguese art and architecture. From adorning facades to depicting biblical passages, these tiles have become an integral part of Portugal's cultural heritage.
This place was amazing. I am confused why it is not talked about more. I went for the tiles which were mind blowing but there is also a church on site that will make your jaw drop. Just stunning architecture. A beautiful building and grounds with a restaurant and gift shop. I was told about this place on a tour with Vini at Get Around Portugal. I am glad he mentioned it as I didn’t know about it but mind was blown. So much amazing stuff to see and well worth the entrance fee. I say you will spend a minimum of an hour. This will be one of the highlights of your trip.

The Museu dos Azulejos in Lisbon is a hidden gem. It beautifully showcases Portugal’s history and culture through an incredible collection of hand-crafted tiles. The museum also features stunning sacred art, and the building itself is unbelievably gorgeous — truly a work of art on its own. Don’t miss the large tile panel that depicts Lisbon before the Great Earthquake — it’s absolutely fascinating. I highly recommend visiting this museum; it’s one of the most unique and enriching experiences in the city.
Murillo P — Google review
I really enjoyed exploring the incredible collection of tiles, showcasing Portugal’s artistry through the centuries. The exhibits are well-organized with clear English explanations, and the building itself is stunning—especially the views from the upper floors. It’s peaceful, not crowded, and easy to walk through at your own pace. No wait to enter, and tickets can be bought right on site. Highly recommend spending a couple of hours here if you love history, art, or design!
Ivan S — Google review
A must to visit. The price of thd ticket is matching the spectacle you'll enjoy (I surely cannot say the same for other places in Lisbon). A church amazingly rich in decorations is an integral part of the museum. At the end of the visit you can enjoy the gigantic view of Lisbon reproduced on azulejo. Beautiful.
Luca L — Google review
Spectacular museum where you can see Portugal's history through the tiles. Unique experience. The cloister and chapel or monastery were amazing too. 100% recommended visit. Free with the Lisbon card.

We were able to walk thru this at our own pace. Unfortunately, the audio tour didn't work. But the tiles were lovely and the building itself was truly beautiful! The chapels and sanctuaries were pretty astounding.

A fascinating museum that tells the story of Portugal’s famous azulejos — decorative tiles found all over the country. The collection is huge, with tiles from different centuries and styles, all beautifully displayed in a former convent. Don’t miss the panoramic Lisbon tile mural on the top floor.

FANTASTIC ! I was truly impressed by this unique and fantastic museum, which includes an integrated monastery and the beautiful Madre Deus Church. It’s an incredibly diverse and one-of-a-kind place, where you can discover ancient and extraordinary tile-making techniques that take you on a fascinating journey through history. The staff are very friendly and enjoy sharing the museum’s stories and anecdotes. The café offers delicious cakes, small bites, and excellent cappuccino, which you can enjoy in a wonderful patio filled with palm trees.

Aquarium
Nature & Parks
Oceanário de Lisboa is a modern aquarium located in the Parque das Nações, east of Lisbon's main attractions. It is Europe's largest indoor aquarium and features a vast saltwater tank with a variety of marine life, including sharks. Visitors can explore habitats representing the North Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans where they can observe puffins, penguins, sea otters, and tropical birds. The aquarium is divided into four huge tanks representing each of the four oceans.
I recently visited the Oceanário de Lisboa, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment I stepped inside, I was captivated by the stunning architecture and the serene atmosphere that enveloped the entire complex. The design, which resembles a floating ship, is not only visually striking but also thoughtfully created to mimic the ocean’s ecosystems. The highlight of my visit was the massive central tank, home to an array of marine life, including graceful sharks, majestic rays, and vibrant schools of fish. Watching these creatures glide through the water was mesmerizing, and the panoramic viewing windows allowed for incredible close-up encounters. It felt like peering into a different world! The exhibits were well-organized and informative, covering various marine habitats, from the Antarctic to the tropics. I particularly appreciated the educational aspect, with engaging displays that provided insights into marine conservation and the importance of protecting our oceans. The interactive elements kept both kids and adults entertained, making it an ideal family outing. Additionally, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, always willing to share more about the exhibits and answer questions. Their passion for marine life and conservation was evident, adding to the overall positive experience. The Oceanário de Lisboa is not just an aquarium; it’s a commitment to educating visitors about the importance of our oceans and the creatures that inhabit them. I left feeling inspired and more aware of the environmental challenges we face. If you’re in Lisbon, this is an absolute must-visit destination! Whether you’re a marine enthusiast or just looking for a wonderful day out, the Oceanário de Lisboa promises to be a highlight of your trip.
Cristian S — Google review
The oceanarium was definitely a highlight of our Lisbon trip; it wasn’t as straightforward to get to as other attractions, but I would recommend the journey nonetheless. From central, the best way is to get there via the Red Line on Underground Metro, it’s pretty quick and is only a short walk to the oceanarium - and you can take in the ocean view of the cable cars and exhibition stadium. We had booked a 10:30 slot, though we could go through earlier with our QR codes. We visited on a Thursday, but there was a significant presence of school outings at the time of our visit. Though it didn’t detract from our experience, I can imagine it could irk some people with less patience! The place is well thought out but rather dark as you traverse between the areas; the main tank in the middle is clearly the main attraction and there’s several viewing points both below and above for you to see. The biggest highlight for us was the Sun Fish or Mola Mola - such a majestic looking bony fish and not one we’ve seen before in any aquarium. Outside of this, there were the sea otters which were very cute! The other animals were rather standard fare if you’re used to aquariums, but the main tank is quite a sight for anybody! The gift shop was a bit of a letdown, without much choice of gifts and at quite a high price. Understandably, the whole shop’s wares are sustainable and environmentally friendly - however, if you’re looking for a sun fish plush to take home with you to remind you of your experience; your out of luck I’m afraid!
Danny W — Google review
I really recommend every tourist to visit this Oceanarium! Don’t miss this experience — it’s super interesting and really big. The ticket isn’t expensive, and we spent about two hours inside — it was truly unforgettable! Such an amazing place full of beauty, peace, and wonder. You can feel so close to marine life and learn a lot while enjoying the incredible atmosphere. I honestly loved every minute of it and truly recommend it to everyone visiting Lisbon! 🌊🐠💙
Kateryna Z — Google review
The Lisbon Oceanarium is definitely one of the city’s highlights and worth a visit if you’re in town. It features a beautiful central tank and some very cute otters. That said, while it’s nice, I found it a bit overrated. It doesn’t quite compare to the top aquariums around the world. For example, Singapore’s was on la completely different level. A thing that kind of ruined my experience is how crowded it can get. I visited at the end of October on a Friday and even though they limit the number of visitors, the cap still feels too high. It was hard to relax or enjoy the exhibits because of the crowds. By contrast, I enjoyed the aquariums in Gran Canaria and Tenerife much more, I could relax a lot more and it felt more immersive. If you plan to go, I’d recommend visiting in the middle of the week, early in the morning or close to closing time for a better experience. There’s a lovely gift shop with lots of cute plushies, I got 3 otters :) Overall, I do recommend it but just make sure to choose your visit time wisely.
Ionut B — Google review
The Oceanário de Lisboa is absolutely amazing! It’s one of the most beautiful and well-designed aquariums I’ve ever visited. The central tank is breathtaking — filled with graceful rays, sharks, and countless colorful fish swimming in harmony. The themed areas around it transport you to different ocean habitats, each beautifully presented and educational. Everything is spotless and well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and informative. It’s a fantastic experience for both kids and adults — peaceful, fascinating, and inspiring. Definitely a must-visit in Lisbon!

I’ve been to many aquariums around the world, and this one truly stands out. The space is divided into four main sections, each representing a different ocean ecosystem, and it’s beautifully designed to let you explore marine life from every angle. The two levels of viewing from above and below make it even more impressive, giving you a full perspective of the sea life. From colorful fish and playful penguins to mesmerizing jellyfish and giant ocean tanks, every corner feels magical and educational at the same time. Overall, this aquarium is well-organized, clean, and thoughtfully curated a perfect mix of fun and learning. Highly recommend for families, couples, or anyone who appreciates the beauty of the ocean.

We got the private guide for 2, it was a great experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. Great value for money, definitely would recommend. We have booked our tickets on the same day in the morning, but would probably recommend booking more in advance as the guide for 2 has a more limited availability.
Ewelina — Google review
100% recommend. It was a bit expensive but if you are students, it’s worth it as there is a discount. The dark lit rooms were matching the aquarium vibes perfectly mixed with the rooms of the ecosystem of animals like penguins and otters.

AMAZING spot!!! A must for planning any trips to Portugal. Views are great, food is AMAZING, lots of shops to see and venture into, lots of places to stay and the locals are really welcoming and friendly. Please respect them and tip them!

55 mins drive from lisbon. One of the best beach with sooo clear water and also the day i went were less waves, felt like swimming pool. It gets very busy though sk recommend going early And parking is on streets if you got lucky or nearby in a hotel parking uptown floor 7, which is costly I paid 10€ for around 4 hrs

Good beach. Hotel could do some cleaning of the litter that gets washed up on shore but otherwise it's easy to get to and relatively quiet.
Shannon — Google review
Calm waters, really beautiful but usually very full... It has all the amenities you need, it's fairly easy to park either in the hotel park or the outside park behind it. You can always get a space in one of the concessions but if you don't want that just keep walking until you reach the end of the beach, you'll usually find a spot there.

One of my favorite beaches in Lisbon area, beautiful views, good infrastructure in the season (out of season unfortunately public toilet is closed, the same with beach bars, but there is plenty of bars and restaurants nearby).

It is an amazing place, really touristic, different shops and market for to buy any kind of food with good prices, I bought a cold cane of tea for only 85cent. The sea it is so clean and clear that even the water it is cold, looks like amazing for to swim in.

Just a lovely beach! We went early so it was not very crowded. There are many parking spots near the beach and if you want you can rent an umbrella. The water was just perfect and the beach was very clean. There are no showers so you should come prepared for that.

Good place for walking with geat views over the coast and inland. Most of the paths we have taken so far are reasonable but some of the mapped routes online need some updating. there are wild boar around but we didn't " bump" into any. uber is cheap here so you can either do circular routes or get an user back if you start finish on a road as we did.

Stunning views on the south side of Setúbal. This highway is one you want to swap drivers just so both people have a chance to look out into the ocean 😋. If you go in the evening it may be less busy.

Fantastic beach. Bit of a steep walk to get to the ocean but was manageable with a 2yr old. Shame the restaurants at the front had no simple food options and both are 100% not suitable for children. Really let the place down. Had to leave and go elsewhere for lunch and dinner.

Pousada Castelo Palmela

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Pousada Castelo Palmela is an elegant hotel located in a former castle and convent, offering classic accommodations, refined dining options, and stunning mountain views. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 10th century when it was initially built by the Moors. Over time, it underwent various architectural modifications reflecting Romanesque, Mannerist, and Gothic influences.
As a wedding photographer based locally, I’ve had the joy of documenting love stories here that feel like something out of a dream — full of emotion, intimacy and unexpected moments of joy. A truly magical venue with breathtaking views and timeless architecture. The light in the late afternoon, combined with the charm of the castle walls, creates the most cinematic setting for a wedding day.

Amazing hotel, wow, wow, wow! You really feel the castle stay: from the portraits on the walls, to the decoration, to the furniture - everything is transporting you back in time and providing for a unique experience. The staff is great and very helpful. The breakfast was probably the best of the whole trip - quality cheeses and hams, pastries and special shout out to the pumpkin cake, still dreaming about it. Unforgettable stay, definitely will try to come back.

Had a wonderful stay here in this beautiful historic castle. Staff was extremely friendly. Rooms were in great shape and with adequate AC. Dining options were great. Daily breakfast was exquisite, tasty with great variety and beautifully presented. You can freely explore the castle grounds while it is open as well which is a great way to enjoy an early AM or evening stroll. Great views too. I will definitely be back when passing through this area again. On another note - I left a personal item in the hotel and they even mailed it back to me, all the way in the United States at no charge. Superb service.

Wonderful place to stay, not far from Lisbon. The restaurant is fantastic and breakfast in the courtyard was so fun. Comfortable rooms. The wine in this region was our favorite of the trip as well.
Casey M — Google review
Great atmospheric place! If you are looking for solitariness, quitness, and historical vibe, go for it. This is the right place for you. But be ready to stay at a medieval castle with some disturbing things that come with it. Like strong ever-present musty smell, unstable Wi-Fi, poor bathroom utilities... Overall, an interesting place to stay at,but not for more than a couple of days.
Irina A — Google review
Fantastic hotel within the old castle. Large, comfortable, quiet and cool rooms. Excellent buffet breakfast. Helpful and friendly staff. Nice ambience and clean and well maintained. Highly recommended.

I was there with my husband and children to celebrate 10 months of my son's and our wedding anniversary, but I was there only for breakfast service. The place is amazing. Beautiful and historic place, but the breakfast service wasn't on the same level level from the group of this place is a piece, We had waited a while before we checked with the person who needed to be informed we were there like walking in nothing like a guest in the Place. The hot food sector wasn't so incredible and the coffee wasn't so incredible an experience for those who love coffee I advise you to go get a Nespresso made by yourself. For the group Pestana, famous in Portugal for getting a 5-star in service and hospitality I received a 2-3 star service, and it was needed to make a reservation during the summer. Maybe if you're a guest the attendance and treatment can be better than what I got, but one place like that wasn't worth the money, but the view and the castle are fabulous that worth your time.
Ana A — Google review
Interesting historical place to stay with a view all the way to Setubal. Prices a bit high as it is a Pousada. Not worth the money. Better stay downtown cheaper and just visit the Pousada to see it. Parking high up just outside the hotel entrance. Several tourists just parked there to see the church and museum.

Praia Tróia Mar is a stunning beach located on the Troia Peninsula, just a ferry ride away from Setubal. This paradisiacal destination offers calm and transparent waters, soft white sands, and an 18km long coastline to explore. The microclimate of the area allows for enjoyable visits throughout the year, with plenty of activities to indulge in. Praia Tróia Mar is described as picturesque and family-friendly, offering miles of beautiful beaches to explore.
Gorgeous beach, super soft and fine sand and during low tide a shallow sand bar appears that you can walk/swim to! The ferry over runs very often as well.
Maggie L — Google review
The water is freezing and the sand scorching. It could have better infrastructure with more hammocks and sunshades. It was 41 degrees today which is unbearable for most people. On the good side, it has a beautiful deck leading to the beach and the marine is beautiful.
Guilherme F — Google review
Have died and gone to heaven. Was introduced to Troia by a tour guide when we visited the National Park Arrabida and I knew straight away Troia was where I was going to stay for my last 3 days in Portugal. The Troia Peninsula is very similar to the Whitsundays in Australia. The sand is soft and white, and being a sand snob I would rate it 9/10 and especially so when low tide you can walk across the vast sand banks out to the Atlantic. No seaweed and the water is calm, although freezing/refreshing. Troia sand, views and waters beat Albufeira, Carvoeiro - the Algarve in general by a long shot! It is even better than Cascais but equivalent to natural beauty Adraga. Adraga has waves for those wave catchers. Renting a shared lounge is expensive, €25 for the entire day. Well worth travelling out here, off the beaten track! Lifeguards are at every beach around Troia and they even help kids in wheelchairs to get from the boardwalk to the beach! Great service Troia Rescue. How to get here / heaven: 1) Bolt/Uber from Lisbon to Setubal wharf (Atlantic ferry) = €25-35 and can take 45-60mins. Train is about €10. 2) Passenger Return ferry or speed boat is €9-10 leaving every hour during weekdays and almost every 30mins on weekends. They allow dogs on the ferry! 3) There is also the option of driving your vehicle over via Atlantic Ferry as well. 4) Troia itself is quite small so you can walk everywhere with well designated footpaths and boardwalks. The supermarket is pretty good, has almost everything including roast chicken. Portuguese people are friendly and it felt safe
JJ C — Google review
Crystal clear water, easy to reach by Ferry from Setubal Atlantic ferries station that has a trip every hour. And then walk for 10 mins. There’s a small bar that has Beer, water, Cola, …etc close to the beach. There are Chaseloungs and Umbrellas. No shower rooms, only WC
Aziz T — Google review
If you’re looking for an unspoiled, peaceful beach far from the typical tourist crowds, Tróia Beach is a true gem. Located on the Tróia Peninsula, directly across the bay from Setúbal, this spot offers stunning views and a rare sense of calm – even in the heart of summer. The crystal-clear waters shimmer with shades of turquoise, and the long, sandy shoreline is perfect for barefoot walks, sunbathing, or simply listening to the waves. It’s a free beach, meaning no umbrellas, no beach bars – just pure, untouched nature. Even during peak season, you’ll often find yourself alone or with just a few others around. It truly feels like a deserted paradise. 🚗 How to get there: The most scenic and convenient way to reach Tróia is by ferry from Setúbal: The car and passenger ferry departs regularly from the Setúbal ferry terminal (Terminal Fluvial) and takes about 25 minutes to reach Tróia. Alternatively, you can take the passenger-only catamaran, which is slightly faster and perfect if you’re not bringing a car. Once you arrive, the beach is easy to access on foot or by bike. Some areas are completely wild, so it's a good idea to bring water, food, and everything you need for a relaxing day by the sea.

Incredible beach— can’t say enough good things about it! My family and I absolutely adore it. We’ve been staying in Setúbal for the past week, and we’ve been visiting this beach almost every day. The beach takes a bit of work to get to, but it’s absolutely worth it. The ferry from Setúbal to Tróia is €26.40 for 3 people. It’s a 12-15 minute ride, and it’s a lovely experience. The views are gorgeous, and I’d recommend taking the 7:30 pm ferry back to Setúbal to catch the sunset. Once you arrive on the peninsula, you walk about 20-25 minutes along a wooden boardwalk to reach the beach. It’s a picturesque walk, and you get to pass a outdoor cat colony. The cats are so sweet, and they appear to be cared for by the locals. The beach is magnificent. There was a warm breeze every day we were there, which kept the flies away. The sand is so soft and sparkly and not too hot. For context, we are visiting in late September. The water is cold, but you can definitely acclimate. It’s so blue, clear, and clean. At low tide, there are amazing sand bars, and you can walk pretty far out. I was also able to collect some gorgeous shells. Finally, there are ample trash cans and a clean bathroom. This beach as everything I want in a beach. I truly adore it.

I love a good open-air market, and while visiting Setúbal I stopped by to walk around theirs. It’s a large, lively market filled with local vegetables, organic products, butchers, fisheries, and a few restaurants tucked along the sides. It’s vibrant, full of color, and one of the best places to immerse yourself in fresh local produce and meet warm, friendly people. Definitely worth a visit — and you can’t miss the big pink building. Hard to miss!

Had an absolutely wonderful time on this sunset tour (at high tide) on the Tagus River. Our guide, Pedro (? - not sure, sorry!), was very friendly and patient. There were a couple of children on the tour, and he was always answering their silly questions and making jokes about the "trunkodiles" (trunks+ crocodiles) in the river. Their eyes wide open as they listened to what he had to say. He pointed us to many different species of fauna and flora, frequently slowing or stopping the boat so we could observe a bird, the fish or the horses. He also explained how the tides influence what happens in the river (even this high up), how the water hyacinths are endangering the river and its species, among many other things. Although the tour is called "sunset", we didn't see the sun actually set from the boat, as the tour finished at around 8:00 and in August the sun sets almost at 9:00. But you can see it from the pier, which is also beautiful. I called the company up twice because I had several questions. (I had thought about taking someone that was using crutches, but ended up going just with a friend). The person I spoke to (Rui, if I'm not mistaken) was not only quite nice, but also very accommodating to any special needs we might have. I'm hoping to repeat the tour next Spring at low tide.

Loved the extended guided boat trip. Didn't book it so no idea how it works but there were 15 of us on a boat trip which lasted a good 2 to 3 hours into the wetlands of the river where we even saw some wild horses in one of the islands.

a bit less crowded than carvalhal beach - beautiful beach a bit windy (end of july) - sundbeds and loungers pricey (80 euros a day for a sunbed!) - bring your own umbrella and be on the beach - nice and clean toilet - beachbar for food and drinks - parking 5 euros

Only for the posh!! Don’t come here unless you are posh and have a “heavy wallet”. Also you can’t park a small van in the parking next to the beach. Hilarious. Sublime Comporta is a luxurious rural accommodation that offers an array of well-lit rooms, suites, and villas. This upscale nature retreat is situated in a picturesque 17-hectare estate enveloped by beautiful pine forests, cork trees, dunes, rice fields, and pristine white-sand beaches. The lodging options are spread throughout multiple buildings and include cabana-style villas ranging from two to five bedrooms.
I can not speak for the rooms but the grounds here are stunning and so tranquil. We came on a guest pass for the week for the gym and found the staff lovely. Gym was small but well equipped and nicely maintained with a beautiful view. Breakfast was delicious each morning and we enjoyed an evening in the round table restaurant with a tour of the gardens and wine pairing at dinner. Fantastic experience.

The hotel grounds are really beautiful and peaceful. The pool area and common spaces look great and the food is very good. The staff is also amazing. Everyone we met was kind, helpful, and friendly. But the rooms were a big disappointment. Ours was small and plain, with almost no decoration. It looked more like a small New York apartment or a basic Marriott room than what you’d expect from a hotel this expensive. The linens felt like the kind you might buy on Amazon, not soft or special. For how much the hotel costs, the rooms should be much nicer. Also, the beach is a 10-minute shuttle ride away, which we knew, but the shuttle only leaves once an hour. This is a beach town and most people go to the beach during the day, so it doesn’t make sense. If you miss the shuttle, you have to wait another hour, which is not what you’d expect at a hotel like this. The setting is beautiful and the staff is wonderful, but the rooms and beach access really took away from the overall experience.

A beautiful retreat to relax and enjoy quality service and food with a beautiful beach in nearby Comporta. The two beach clubs, JNCQuoi and Sublime, are also upscale and wonderful. It seems like the surf is not as rough in Comporta, however. FYI. (The two beach clubs are fantastic and definitely worth visiting though). I had two fantastic massages in the spa. Thank you, Joana and Katia- I feel so much better and really enjoyed meeting both of you; you’re top-notch!

From the warm welcome at the front desk to every thoughtful touch throughout the stay, you can feel the passion and commitment of a group that genuinely loves what they do. A special recognition goes to the amazing marketing, events, and coordination team, whose creativity and dedication shine through in every perfectly planned experience, every unforgettable moment, and every detail that exceeds expectations. Wow! What a fantastic combination of luxury and casual relaxation. Our room was lovely with a biopool just outside the patio door and a modern bathroom and welcoming layout. Everyone I came into contact with on this property was kind and genuine. We attended a cooking class which was a lot of fun. Having stayed for several nights I left feeling refreshed and relaxed. The spa treatments were top notch and the grounds were impeccably maintained. I hope to stay at this and other Sublime locations for years to come. Thanks for such an incredible experience.

Absolutely loved our visit here! Felt like I was staying at a resort that White Lotus would film at. Stayed in room 8 which I feel is a great location to the gym, spa and main restaurant. Breakfast is fabulous and nice that it is included. Had dinner one night and had the Sole for two - 10/10. Service at this hotel is outstanding. My only complaint which is minor, better lighting at night when walking back to your room. Highly recommend this beautiful resort.
Tammy D — Google review
The location and grounds are beautifully kept. Sadly the quality of the experience makes it hard for me to recommend this location to any of my American friends in search of a place to unwind in luxurious stillness. 🚨 Most alarming: I found the staff to be quite dishonest about the services we were interested in. We were even charged a fee for something that was phrased as complimentary when offered. When I explained my confusion given the wording, management was unmoved and offered no concession for the miscommunication. It was a bit disappointing to say the least. Amazing place for families! We loved our stay at Sublime Comporta. Such a beautiful and peaceful place, surrounded by nature. We played padel, had an amazing spa treatment, and spent time at the beach club — perfect for long lunches and sunsets. The staff were super friendly and made everything easy. A really special spot for a family getaway.

Horseback Riding Tours
Great views, great horses, great hosts. Rode with these guys for a riding holiday and very much enjoyed it. The trails are great and canters long and fun! The horses are so fit for endurance and can run for ages! Made a great bond with my horse and was a fantastic experience for an advanced rider.

Gorgeous ride to the beach. Rode the sweetest horse, Nata, stunning views and fantastic guide, Gabriel with Caju the cute dog to lead the way.

We absolutely loved our rid... it was my husbands second time on a horse and he was made to feel very comfortable and confident and as there was only two of us on the ride, our guide (and his dog Caju!) gave us riding lessons as well along with lots of information on the area and he took lots of photos of us....it felt very personal, the horses were fantastic, very well behaved and the scenery / sand dunes are incredible, we even had the chance for a trot and a quick gallop on the beach! Highly recommend and will be back next year, thank you 😊

Very nice ride through the forest on safe horses. While I’m an experienced rider it was the first time for my partner and he was made to feel comfortable and confident for our hack. We were also lucky in that we had the ride to ourselves! It was really interesting to learn more about the area, and the cork trees, from the back of a horse. Would recommend.

The horseback riding tour was okay, but quite long. Afterward was the so-called "wine tasting." It turned out to be just a cheap bottle of wine with a few slices of ham. As if that wasn't enough, the staff asked us to close up ourselves because they wanted to leave. The price we paid also didn't match the prices they advertised. We paid €115 per person, while the prices were €55-€65 per person for the riding and €15 per person for the wine tasting. Scam!

My boyfriend and I did a private sunset ride for our anniversary and it was sooo beautiful. Luis was a great guide, very friendly. The dunes and the beach and sunset are gorgeous. Loved it!

What a wonderful experience, even though we had never rode on a horse, by the time we started till the end we felt like pros, all thanks to our guide Tiago. Tiago was great, cautious and very attentive. We loved everything about it and I strongly recommend this wonderful experience. The scenery during the 1H45 was breathtaking. BTW Tiago spoke English excellently. Bravo 👏

STAY AWAY from this horseback riding place! The WORST part of our experience was when my friend FELL OFF the horse, and the guide, Philippa, showed absolutely no empathy, callously saying, "It's just sand." My friend walked back for the rest of the ride, and Philippa never checked on us afterward. From the moment we arrived, Philippa was rude. She yelled at us for not picking up her unknown calls, even though we were on time. We don't answer calls from numbers we don't recognize, but that's none of her business. To make matters worse, despite never confirming a reservation for my boyfriend who didn't come, Philippa and the owner, Luis, forced us to pay for him. When we tried to dispute the charge, Philippa threatened to start the ride without us even though my friend and I had already paid, and demanded we apologize to the other riders for supposedly making them "wait." As an customer getting treated this way, I was beyond shocked and disgusted. This place is unsafe, and the staff is incredibly unprofessional. Save yourself the trouble and find another horseback riding establishment!

Pousada Castelo de Alcácer do Sal

Mentioned on

Hotel
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled atop a hill in the ancient Alcacer Castle, Pousada Castelo de Alcacer do Sal is a refined hotel offering breathtaking views of the River Sado and its lush valley. The establishment boasts an outdoor pool perfect for taking a relaxing dip while enjoying scenic vistas. All rooms come equipped with cable TV, minibar, and private bathroom adorned with wooden furniture and warm hues. The restaurant serves both local Portuguese specialties and international cuisine to satisfy diverse palates.
Those who have seen my reviews, know that I can be somewhat critical at times. However, this Pousada would deserve 6 stars if we could give them. We went here as a couple and were pleasantly surprised by the vastness of the castelo, the design of the interior, the friendliness of the staff, the space of the room and last-but not least the quality of the breakfast. Mid December the hotel was virtually empty which left us all the time to enjoy the atmosphere it has on offer. And that is a lot. Sitting by the fireplace in the evening, after playing some snooker, enjoying the spirits of the honesty bar; what more to wish for? Well a good sleep; the generously sized beds with high quality mattress are made for this. What helped were the last minute off-season offers which added to the experience. Is there nothing to whine? Yes, the outdoor pool was ice cold and the indoor one with sauna, we did not discover. ;-)

I used already a few times the charging station of this beautiful hotel. But today I was refused and told that only hotel guests are allowed to use it. It is still very difficult in Portugal to find a fitting charging station for your electric car and it is a very unpolite and rude behaviour to disallow the usage. The hotel has two charging points and both were available.

Views are stunning. Hotel itself is very dated and rather tatty. Needs refurbishment. Staff were lovely but breakfast was a massive fail - food products were inferior, given the prices, and the grounds are in need of better care - cigarette butts litter the gravel and the plants are in need of love. On the plus side dogs are allowed although they charged us a 60 euros for our two boys ( one small and one medium). That said, they did give the boys a lovely furry friends treat box. So on the whole, lovely stay but over priced for the condition and quality of food.

A Perfect Stay at the Pousada em Alcácer do Sal Our stay at the Pousada was simply perfect from start to finish and we were a family group of 10. Everything exceeded our expectations: the rooms were spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable. The atmosphere throughout the property strikes a perfect balance between historical charm and modern comfort. The pool area was a true highlight: serene, well-maintained, and ideal for relaxing under the Alentejo sun. The food was also outstanding, with a great variety and high-quality ingredients that showcased the region’s flavors beautifully. Above all, the staff were warm, professional, and attentive, making us feel welcome and cared for at every moment. It’s rare to find a place where everything comes together so harmoniously, but this is it. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a peaceful, authentic, and luxurious experience in Alcácer do Sal. We can't wait to return!

Very good place, I liked it, mixing the historical with the rustic is beautiful, excellent views at various points where you can take great photos. Very attentive staff

The Castelo itself offers everything you would expect from a Pousada. The rooms have seen better days..., the silicone joints in the bathroom were moldy - the entrance corridor was not bright and welcoming due to the dark brown build in wardrobe and the wainscoting of the same nature. The bedroom was good, The small terrace was nice, offering a great view towards the valley. The service in this Pousada in contrast to other Pousadas was reasonably good. I would not recommend the restaurant.

Zoo
Monte Selvagem Reserva Animal is a 20-hectare space in Lavre, Montemor-o-Novo, Evora district, housing around 350 animals from 60 different species. It offers a unique blend of zoo and safari experiences with various games and activities for kids. The well-kept zoo features exotic animals and spacious enclosures for larger species to roam freely. With an emphasis on children, the park provides numerous playgrounds and a petting zoo.
Great place to visit, awesome for kids with lots of play areas. The animals have great conditions and the keepers will tell you all there is to know about them. Petting zoo inside is also great, you can go in and pet the goatsz the piglets, etc. Showers and sprinklers all around help in coping with the heat in summer.

I visited Monte Selvagem today with my 2-year-old, and it was an absolutely amazing experience! The animals are very well cared for, and their enclosures are spacious and impeccably clean. The staff were incredibly friendly, making the visit even more enjoyable. One of the highlights was the petting farm—such a wonderful hands-on experience, especially for little ones! The washrooms were clean, which is always a plus. However, if you're visiting with children, I highly recommend bringing your own snacks, as the bar had very limited to no food options. Also, keep in mind that the park is not stroller-friendly, so plan accordingly. Overall, Monte Selvagem is a must-visit for families and animal lovers alike. Highly recommended!

We loved it. It's a beautiful place to be in contact with nature. Plenty of picnic tables and playgrounds for the kids. The tree houses are amazing. We got to see different animals up close. A place to go back to. 💚

We love the Monte Selvagem Nature Park. Spent a golden autumn day Sunday on 2 November. The scenery around the park sometimes reminds me of the wild open spaces in Tasmania, or even in South Africa driving the roads to Hermanus or in wild reserves next to the Kruger. It has a lovely family feel, wildlife conservation. Kids learn a lot. So many picnic tables around and a little café for a tea, or even a meal if people need. Our daughter just turned 4 and loved it, we also came shen she was 2.5 yrs and loved it then too. Lovely countryside hangout. The playgrouds, bamboo labyrinth (like Arashiyama in Japan) are great fun too.

A wonderful place to spend half-day with kids. Well maintened with a nice selection of animals that, most import, look happy and well treated. There's plenty of wc, garbage bins, refreshing spots. In addition, there's playgrounds located in different parts of the park. Which helps a lot to entertain the kids. Finally, landscape is superb, resulting in plenty of beautiful and shadowed areas. Totally recommend it.

Great place to go with kids. Looks like COVID times made them pass through some difficulties - the tractor ride no longer exists. The animals are all very well treated and the place is amazing in terms of being within nature. An amazing day with kids

Very pleasant, excellent to spend a day with the family, many activities for different ages. Animals are very well treated, like the entire space. I loved the farm where we can walk among the animals and feed them by hand. We will certainly return.

Nice park with charming petting zoo. Large animals in captivity is an unfortunate thing these days. Although out of the way for those without private transport, it's worthwhile making an effort to get there for a lovely day out.

Castelo de Montemor-o-Novo is a stunning and expansive castle that dominates the city's skyline. The ancient city gate, guard station, and dramatic clock tower are just some of the features within its walls. Visitors can climb onto the outer fortifications for a 360-degree view of the town and surrounding plains. While not everything has been preserved, two intact towers and a church add to the historical charm.
Large castle with village inside all in ruins. It worth a visit.

Large remains of what once must have been a beautiful castle with surrounding town. Especially in the 15th century it was a powerhouse and it was here that the first plans were made for a first sea expedition to India. That voyage would later be made by Vasco da Gama

Château de Montemor-o-Novo is a fascinating destination for photographers who love history and texture. The castle’s ancient walls, perched on a hill overlooking the Alentejo countryside, offer sweeping panoramic views and countless photo opportunities. The ruins, arches, and towers create dramatic compositions, especially in the golden light of late afternoon. The contrast between the rugged stone and the soft landscape surrounding it captures the timeless charm of Portugal’s heritage. A must-visit spot for any photographer exploring the region.

Nature & Parks
Fluviário de Mora is a family-friendly destination with a dedicated area for children to engage in activities like drawing. Visitors can observe various river species, from small fish to piranhas and river monsters, as well as turtles, poisonous frogs, and an anaconda. The facility also features Asian otters that are fed at specific times of the day.
Fluviário is located a little bit far away from the village and near a river beach. It is a pleasant space to know the life present in a common river, since the source to the sea, with species from each phase of the river. If you are lucky and visit during the otters' feed time, you will see them swimming. Otherwise, they will probably be sleeping snd out of sight.

A nice aquarium built around the structure and different stages of a river. It is not very big (comparing to other aquariums) but is "complete" and well organized. It has the normal gift-shop and also a room with activities for smaller kids. Overall, a very nice place to visit in the middle of Alentejo. The family ticket for 2 adults and two children was about 22 euros.

Monte da Ravasqueira, located in the Arraiolos region of Alentejo, is a winery connected to the Jose de Mello family for generations. The vast estate enjoys optimal geological and climatic conditions for producing top-quality wines. Inspired by Napa Valley's cellars, Monte da Ravasqueira's facility boasts advanced technology for precise wine-making control. Visitors can explore the scenic vineyards, historic cellars, and enjoy tastings of their impressive wine selection.
A wonderfully relaxed tour with old carriages and a vineyard finishing with a wine tasting. The lovely multilingual lady running the tour (whose name I missed unfortunately) was suitably informed on all aspects that I expressed curiosity for. She also recommended the correct restaurants in Arraiolos. I visited in February, so it was quiet and the vineyard itself had no leaves, but it was still very worthwhile.

Monte da Ravasqueira is a beautiful winery in the heart of Alentejo, just over an hour from Lisbon. The place is surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, and stunning countryside, with a perfect mix of traditional Alentejo charm and modern style. The guided tour takes you through the vineyards, the winery, and the fascinating Carriage Museum, which has an amazing collection of historic carriages. The wine tasting is excellent, with knowledgeable staff who explain everything in a friendly way, and the wines themselves are truly worth the visit. It’s peaceful, scenic, and a great spot to relax, learn, and enjoy some of the best wines in the region.

This estate is a staggering 7,000 plus acres and has been owned by the same family since shorty after WW2. The family is one of the wealthiest in Portugal. This property was their summer estate where they groomed horses for a long time before the current generation decided to turn it into a winery. We arrived by car and found ample parking. We had a wonderful private tour of the estate. Our guide was knowledgeable and allowed us to not only explore the facility to be be educated into the process of turning grapes into wine. We walked from the tasting room to the fermenting facility which from a distance looked like old buildings but were in fact newer building made to look old. Inside we wondered along the gantries and looked down on the large stainless steel vats where the grapes are crushed and the wine starts its first fermenting in large stainless steel tanks. We then explored the storage room where a certain amount of wine destined for a vintage label are stored in oak barrels. We were allowed to have a peek into the bottling room where modern machinery fills and labels the bottles. The fields are labeled with Portuguese Ceramic tile signs that identify the type of grape grown there. Heading back to the tasting room we passed the private residence of the family which is still in use today. Along the way we popped into a building which forms the museum of antique carriages collected over the years by the original owner of the property. Carriages for the 1700 look as they did in the period. They have not been rebuild or reupholstered. The collection is very interesting even if your not into carriages. Just the array of the transportation of the pre-automobile era over the centuries is fascinating. We spent some time in front of a unique and rather large carriage that was once owned by the famous car designer Bugatti himself. From the museum we moved on to the wine tasting. The tasting comes with a fee depending on what you want to taste. In the end we discovered that the wine we liked is only $6 more at home in North America as the price the winery was charging. This was surprising and frankly, disappointing. One would expect the price to far less than the full retail half a world away. In the end we did not buy any wine. However, we decided to try a bottle of their champagne or Spumante as they call it because the can not use the Champagne name. We brought it home and look forward to opening it. The property also has a restaurant which requires a reservation in advance. If your in the area, its worth a tour.
D S — Google review
Well versed staff who explained the history of the winery, along with the tour of the carriages. Excellent wine tasting to follow, with the opportunity to purchase wines/port/olive oil/honey before you leave. Explanations of the wines/grapes were amazing and made the day worthwhile. It should be noted that if you arrive by taxi, then arrangements should be made beforehand for collection...as this can be tricky. Overall a 5-star (if not higher) experience.
Damon B — Google review
Beautiful property and winery. Out-of-the-ordinary because of the collection of antique carriages that visitors can see on the guided tour. Beautiful wine tasting room, interesting tour of wine-making, delicious lunch – and wine – in yet another beautiful room (with a fireplace), hosted by smiling, friendly Carlos. Teresa, our guide for the winery tour was informative, knowledgeable, nice and – when we told her we did not have a car – drove us in her car (weather was awful for walking). Worth a visit!

From other reviews we were expecting these Roman Baths to be difficult to find but once you have identified the building - the town hall - the receptionist pointed us in the direction of the baths and gave us an explanatory leaflet that was in English as well as Portuguese. The baths are interesting as much for their situation in the middle of the building, you can see offices through windows around them, as for the construction of the baths. The bath is a 9 m circular bath with steps like a jacuzzi and there are some remains from the furnace too. It isn't worth going out of your way for but if you are passing Monday to Friday in office hours then pop in and see.

Cool but not much information given on it. If in Evora check it out but I wouldn’t go out of my way to come see it.

I strongly recommend paying these a visit. They are located in the town hall and I suggest having a look around and picking up a free guide pamphlet. They are free to see and are quite interesting. Be aware that there is a limited amount on show and limited information to take in, so expect only a 10 minute visit.

Sights & Landmarks
The Chapel of Bones in Évora is a small 16th-century chapel adorned with the bones and skulls of monks, creating a haunting yet thought-provoking atmosphere. Located near Giraldo Square, it stands next to the famous Igreja de San Francisco cathedral. The chapel's walls are decorated with motifs created from the remains of 5,000 individuals collected from overcrowded cemeteries at the time.
Amazing place. The only way to describe it in my opinion is where death meets art. I was surprised the energy was so great in here and I loved the energy in this place. There is a museum attached and a view points as well which are part of your ticket. 3 floors in total to check out. In my mind priced very cheap for just the chapel of bones by itself. This is worth a trip to Évora from Lisbon alone.

A fascinating and eerie place in the heart of Évora! The Chapel of Bones is covered with thousands of real human bones and skulls — built by monks in the 16th century to remind people that life is short. It’s both spooky and beautiful at the same time. Definitely a must-see when visiting

The chapel lined with bones is a truly unique experience that makes you reflect on the transience of everything. So many lives lived, so many stories that will never be told... The nativity museum is really interesting too, especially seeing how it was interpreted by different cultures. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Three stars is mainly due to the comparison with another bone chapel in Czech Republic! Sedlec Ossuary Kostnice Sedlec in Kutná Hora is way more unique, and much more interesting! So it’s a bit disappointed for me. Travel 2hrs from Lisbon to here just to see this places that I’ve always wanted to visited. The main church is amazing as other churches. The bone chapel sure has LOTS of bones, but it was simply piled on top of others. I was fortunate to visit Sedlec Ossuary Kostnice Sedlec and the bone chapel was way more beautiful decorated even though it was a much smaller church. This chapel is definitely not worth the trip if you had been to Sedlec Ossuary Kostnice Sedlec!

I think it's a bit expensive for what it is. It's small, but really a unique chapel. The chapel is super crowded. Wasn't really interested in the Nativity Scene museum; the Chapel is what's up. I had Black Sabbath playing in my ear buds which was perfect so if you're a fan of metal or goth, this is for you.

Very interesting ossuary. I paid in cash based on what is in other reviews to avoid frustration. 6 euro entry seemed a little much considering how small it is, but it's a tourist attraction so. The use of the bones is very interesting and used in nice patterns.

Spooky? It’s a place to visit, if you’re in town. The history behind and its fast visit not boring, and you can see also Nativity scenes from all around the world showcasing different art styles which were lovely to see.

This is a great place to see. It's not very big. Maybe take a few minutes there but you can stay as long as you want. Along with visiting the chapel, there is also 2 floor level to visit including a balcony that you can look out on the small square center. If you park in the square, parking fee is required with a max of 4 hrs. If you park outside the square, no fee for parking. After visiting the chapel, the church is connected right beside it. You can visit, no cost. Not much in Evora to do, however you can make it a day trip just by walking around and exploring. Lots of unique streets to explore. Restaurants are great and lots of places to buy souvenirs

The Roman Temple of Évora, located in the Conde Vila Flor square, is a remarkable ancient ruin built in the 1st century A.D. Initially dedicated to Emperor Augustus, it features impressive Corinthian pillars and stands as a symbol of Roman worship. Over the centuries, it served various purposes including as a mosque during the Moorish period and later as a market and slaughterhouse.
Free entry visit, it is actually located in the middle of a small square behind the famous Cathedral. No need to wait for taking a picture, no need to buy a ticket. There’s also viewpoint pretty closeby , so you can see Alentejo landscape.

A Remarkable Surprise in the Heart of Évora Our visit to the Roman Temple of Évora turned out to be one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. After exploring the site, we sat just south of the temple at a small nearby bar, enjoying a cold beer and a glass of wine in the sunshine a perfect setting to take in the view. The temple itself, with its beautiful surroundings and remarkably well-preserved columns, carries an incredible story. It’s hard to believe it’s still standing after centuries of history and change. The fact that it’s completely free to visit made it feel like even more of a hidden gem. Honestly, it felt like a bit of good luck that we stumbled upon such a special place in such a relaxed and charming way. Absolutely worth a visit if you find yourself in Évora you won’t be disappointed.

A stunning and beautiful piece of history, this is one of the iconic sites that can be found within the city and is one that you need to visit when here. It is really impressive and great to walk around and appreciate.

Beautiful and historic place in the heart of Évora! The Roman Temple — often called the Temple of Diana — is almost 2000 years old and one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Portugal. Great spot for photos, especially at sunset! You can really feel the history here. Highly recommend visiting

Probably my favourite place to visit in Evora. Iconic stop. Ancient Corinthian columns from the 1st century, right in the historic centre, free to see any time. You must visit it while in Evora

Had more fun driving in the tiny streets of Évora! Temple is great. Easily accessible and free to view/walk up to. No tickets needed - only if you want to go inside the church, and that’s up to you. Awesome to see something like this well preserved and still standing.

This seemed a little out of place walking through town to stumble across, but it was magnificent to see. We were fortunate enough to walk by at night with it all illuminated, very impressive! These are the interesting things you can find when travelling through old towns in Europe, makes it very unique.

Very nice, though not so much to see around. The garden area has a nice view.

Cathedral of Évora

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of Évora, completed in 1746, is a prominent Roman Catholic cathedral offering scenic city views from its tower. It is one of the most significant cathedrals in Portugal and sits on the highest point of the city, making it a prominent feature of the cityscape.
The cathedral, museum, and the tower were all absolutely stunning!! If you’re student, there’s also a discount, not so big a difference, yet still better than nothing. The staff to give the tickets was super friendly and warm, I really appreciated their welcoming hospitality. For 4 euros, the view is so worth it. If you’re planning to visit Evora, you shouldn’t miss this Cathedral for sure!

Everything about this cathedral exceeded my expectations. The striking architecture, remarkable history, and breathtaking views from the rooftop made the visit unforgettable. Climbing up is well worth it, the panorama over Évora is magnificent. A must-see when exploring the city.

A stunning piece of architecture and one of the highlights of my trip. This is a beautiful site that is well worth visiting and the opportunity to climb to the roof provides breathtaking views of the city. There is a small museum included in your entry ticket and this is a fantastic site that you can spend lots of time at and not get bored.

If you visit the town of Era, Portugal, I recommend you visit the cathedral there for several reasons. First of all, we have seen many, many cathedrals in our travels, but this one is special. To be honest, my favorite part was walking around the roof of the cathedral, a unique experience! And of course, the altar and nave were beautiful, as you can see in the photos. Also amazing is that construction was started in the year 1280, still standing and in good condition.

Évora is a stunning town, and at its heart stands the magnificent Cathedral of Évora, perched on a hilltop like a crown jewel. The town itself feels like stepping back in time narrow cobbled streets, ancient walls, and a peaceful, almost magical medieval atmosphere that wraps around you the moment you arrive. The cathedral is an awe-inspiring structure, both inside and out. Its Gothic architecture is beautifully preserved, and climbing to the roof rewards you with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. From every angle, it’s easy to see how this cathedral became the focal point of such a historic town. It’s hard not to like all of it. The quiet charm, the rich history, and the way everything centers so naturally around the cathedral make Évora an unforgettable place to visit. Highly recommended for lovers of history, architecture, or anyone looking for a peaceful escape into Portugal’s past.

The cathedral offers stunning vistas of Evora and the plains of the Alentejo. The best views are on the rooftop accesible via the towers. We recommend visiting in the late afternoon (4PM or later) This way you can catch the golden hues of sun entering the cathedral and shining upon the high choir. Please honor the reverence of this space with silence. Photography allowed in all area except the treasure room with sacred relics.

Stunning cathedral with amazing views from the rooftop! Évora Cathedral is one of the most impressive monuments in the city — a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Climb to the top for a beautiful panoramic view of Évora and the Alentejo region. Peaceful, historic, and absolutely worth a visit!

Absolutely spectacular. Every part of the experience is fun. Getting to walk up the towers to walk on the roof and look out over the city. Walking through the cloister to see the sacred treasure collection (a MUST). Taking in the stunning beauty of the main cathedral. All of it fantastic. A highlight of our whole trip.
