Viktors K — Google review
I entered the tourist information and after a while the lady on the desk spoke me in Latvian. I am Greek and i learned English to communicate with foreigners, so i asked her if she speaks English. She said no. Then another lady that was inside standing nearby told me in English that the office is closed while it seemed open. Although the schedule outside says it should be open. Time of visit Friday 8 Sep 2023 10:50am. Disappointed especially when i am a cycling traveler doing 5000km around Baltic Sea to spread a message about peace. Nearby there is a bicycle museum, the Eurovelo 13 cross from here, and they have a bicycle installation outside of the tourist office.

Good looking place. But then I visited it wasn't working

I stopped by Saulkrasti almost immediately upon arriving in Latvia, and by stopping in it tourism office, I received a warm welcome, a little help with my Latvian, and postcards. What a great start to my holiday. Paldies!

The place is really beautiful. The parking costs 2 € per hour there but it’s free at the other places in the city, so it’s better to walk a bit. Lot of touristic equipments.
LV — Google review
Access gravel road is not the best and you have to pay parking, but the area is kept nice with good views.
Svens — Google review
Very nice place with many wooden paths. We experienced a beautiful sunset at this place. If you come with a car there is a paid parking lot: 2€ per one hour.
Silvia B — Google review
Not crowded and nearly perfectly clean. There's not much space for any big beach activities, but it's fantastic if you're looking for a nice, peaceful time.
Rob S — Google review
beautiful scenery of the river Inčupe flowing into the sea, the path is well maintained and offers panoramic views of the area.

This beach is an absolute slice of heaven, a true paradise! The unbelievably vast expanse of the softest, whitest sand imaginable invites you to completely relax and soak up the warm, radiant sun. The water is crystal clear, sparkling with a stunning turquoise color, perfect for all sorts of water activities, from swimming and surfing to snorkeling and simply floating and enjoying the view. The beach is exceptionally well-maintained and offers a wide range of first-class facilities, including spotless, modern restrooms, refreshing outdoor showers, and an extensive selection of restaurants and shops that cater to every need and desire. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with something for everyone, whether you're a family seeking fun, a solo traveler looking for peace, or a group of friends wanting to create lasting memories. The natural beauty of the beach, combined with its outstanding amenities and the welcoming vibe, makes it an unforgettable destination, an experience you'll treasure long after you've left! It's a truly exceptional place!

Public beach, not crowded, but there are no toilets. Overall, the beach is clean and well-maintained, but there are only a few small spots that offer shade. Therefore, if you want shade during the day, bring a sun umbrella with you.

INCREDIBLE!! We opted for Latvian Pirts Ritual With Herbal Hot-Tub and it was so beautiful. We were met by our lovely sauna master Richard who talked us through the ritual, and by the end of the 3.5hrs we felt like different people. It was incredible and a ritual for life I think. Thank you so much 🙏
Sarah L — Google review
It was definitely the highlight of our trip. The experience itself was amazing plus the sauna master welcomed us warmly and explained how things works. This is a highly recommended activity who will go in Latvia.
Leizel L — Google review
We tried 240 euro/2ppl perits ritual, and really enjoyed it. The spa master is very good and led us thru the entire journey. Its quite pricy and location a bit out of Riga, so a total 5-6hr time to be budgeted and pretty much a day trip in winter time
Luyi — Google review
Absolutely amazing experience me and my fiancé had doing the traditional ritual! It was an experience that’ll stay with us forever, really! So unique and what a mental and physical refreshment it was! Out in nature, dipping in a frozen pond was exhilarating!! Worth every penny’ Thank you Mārcis!! You were right, it was magical 🍃🌿👏
Mwana H — Google review
Mārcis was an incredible guide through our experience. Even before we arrived he made both my friend and I feel quite comfortable and excited about the process. The sauna was completely transformative between hot steam, herbs, honey and salt scrubs and contrast procedures in the snow and outdoor pond. There are certain feelings and sensations that seem to only be accessible through this practice, and it is difficult to understate how revitalized we felt during and after the sauna. Mārcis is an expert in what he does, I left feeling quite grateful to be alive. Can’t recommend highly enough.
Justin R — Google review

The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia

Ethnographic museum
Museums
The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia, located just a short distance from Riga's city center, is a vast outdoor museum set in a forest by Lake Jugla. It boasts an impressive collection of 118 well-preserved historical buildings dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries, representing all four provinces of Latvia. Visitors can explore traditional farmsteads, homes of farmers and craftsmen, and even witness folk artisans demonstrating their crafts during the summer months.
Spent a wonderful day here on the mid summer in Latvia and loved every moment. Set amidst tall pines and a serene lake, the traditional Latvian farmsteads, churches, and windmills transported me back in time. The craftsmanship in each building is simply stunning—so much to admire! I especially enjoyed wandering the quiet forest trails and imagining village life centuries ago. The entire setting felt like a living storybook. The staff were friendly and eager to share insights, which added richness to the experience. A perfect spot to slow down, reconnect with nature, and appreciate Latvia’s cultural roots. Highly recommended!
Sujith B — Google review
Great place! Didn't find the cafe, but found the picnic tables and signs pointing to where one probably was - might have been closed after 3pm. Very pretty, scenic, rustic. I can imagine many a mediaeval or period movie might have been filmed here
Jonathan L — Google review
The museum was bigger than we expected. We spent there more than an hour just walking amongst all the houses and the trees. The ticket costs just 6€ and it's absolutely worth it. You can enter few houses and I loved how the staff had a local clothes on them 😊
Silvia B — Google review
Wanted to go here ever since we booked a trip to Riga and it didn’t disappoint! Just wow. Stunning scenery, spectacular buildings and an incredible, special, peaceful place. We went on a midweek day when it was fairly quiet, and felt very lucky to experience it in such peace and quiet. Hands down the best thing we did on the trip, and would recommend to anyone. Would love a revisit on the craft weekend!
Rachael G — Google review
Peaceful and interesting. Beautiful nature and exhibits. You will need a couple of hours and I would recommend getting there in the morning before it gets too hot. There is a lot of walking but it is mostly flat and accessible. They also had a very welcoming cat near the gift shop.
Aviva Y — Google review
Interesting and educational. The area was quite large with lots to see, so it took a few hours to walk through it all (and my feet were complaining towards the end). Many buildings were closed, but I didn't mind it too much since the weather was good and enough were open to get a sense of the indoors. The forest was beautiful too, and I even found some bilberries! The bus ride from near the city centre took about 40 minutes, but it was worth it.
Iiris S — Google review
A very nice museum of an historic Latvian village. The place looks like it was taken from a fairytale. On the entrance you get a map which takes you to visit every part of the village, in each part there is an explanation also in English. There are clean restrooms in few places and a little restaurant in the middle of the village.
Yaron B — Google review
One of the best experiences we had in Riga. It’s a bit outside the city, but there are busses that you can take. It’s well worth your time. Be prepared for a lot of walking. When we visited, the restaurant was not open so I recommend packing a lunch.

Dobuļi, Mini zoo

Zoo
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
Nice little zoo. Also there are tables for a picnic
Vjaceslavs L — Google review
I have visited this “mini zoo” with my friend. We were very exited and anticipated to receive a similar experience to “Rakši zoo”. However, we were disappointed, appalled and heartbroken when we left. Let me dive a little deeper. This is marketed as a contact zoo, where you can feed and touch animals, but for some reason they have these metal rod fences where the owners cut holes for animals to poke their heads out, they are sharp, animals hurt themselves and seem unnecessary. Then we came across animals with eye infections, that have puss coming out of their eye and we thought “okay, well it’s sad, but they are probably being treated”, then the animals hay is being kept in the wrong conditions, then we saw a pony who has asthma and when we fed her, she started experiencing tummy issues, she shouldn’t be fed and should be treated…, but then again we said “well maybe they are being treated and we shouldn’t be making a big deal about it, because we don’t know”, however, the last straw was when I saw a llama or alpaca who grew OUT of his halter and that SMALL halter was digging into the poor animal’s face, it was bleeding, there was puss, so many flies around the wounded area, it was horrific. At that moment, I came to the realisation that if they CARED, really, TRULY CARED they would have 100% noticed that the animal is in pain, because it has an infected, bleeding face BECAUSE its halter is too small for him and has clearly not been taken off since god knows when!!! They are negligent towards these animals and there is probably so much more that I have not seen or have not noticed, but I am so sorry for those animals… and they have monkeys and other exotic animals, who need specific care. I honestly don’t even want to think about it. This place needs to be held accountable!
Jarik O — Google review
Great place for kids, entertaining - kids can feed the animals. Nice area for picnic! Close to Riga. Was worth to visit
E B — Google review
Great small zoo, quite big variety of animals. Clean, pleasant to walk around. Great for children. If too hot, animals sleep 😴
Artūrs Š — Google review
Great place to visit. Not far from city. Can feed animals. Open space place. Visit time about an hour. Interesting for kids.
Andrej P — Google review
Better than any "big" Zoo. Kids can touch and play with the animals! They even have a Camel and yes... you can feed it :) A Must for a family outing with the little ones. Thank you!
Marcel K — Google review
A mini zoo where kids can feed the animals themselves. Animal food must be bought on site.

Worth visiting if you're nearby, otherwise the best choice is "Rakši". No family ticket.

What a place! A sweet little rabbit farm next to the main road. Very well maintained. We felt like we were in a fairytale! The kids enjoyed it and so did we! A must stop if you travel between Vilnius and Riga.
Radi G — Google review
Family of 2+2 plus two boxes of carrots was 8 euros. A lot of rabbits, goats, sheep, geese, chickens, turkeys.
Gailė Š — Google review
Ok the idea is interesting. Basically lots of rabbits in cages. (Being a shooter - My thoughts was shot one, seen them all) BUT I actually enjoyed it. The kids 9 & 13 loved it and now want a pet rabbit. ( This may cock up my next shooting trip?) But it will be cheaper than a dog, goldfish pond? Then there were ducks, chickens and a calf. The most special thing was the bever.. Wow! Amazing... Closest I have been to one. If passing, and looking to kill time and have a good time with the kids. " Stop here"...
Christopher H — Google review
It’s Just Amazing place to visit. It’s worth it . 3 euros for adult . You would find inner peace having fun with pet animals feeding them. If possible try to take some bread packets with you feed the animals . The animal’s present here are like rabbit, hen’s, dog, birds , duck , goat 🐐, fishes . Take your more time around 2 to 3 hours and look at the complete place . Check out my YouTube channel as well I have posted some amazing videos on this You would enjoy 😊 ..
Abdul S — Google review
Perfect pit stop while driving lots of cute animal to see and interact with, You can also buy for 1€ a basket of carrots and feed the rabbit the small houses are a delight to walk around and it only cost 2.5€ euro to enter per person, highly recommend
Hassan R — Google review
Amazing place for meeting a lot of different species of bunnies. You can buy carrots from the lady for 1e bag. The place is very clean and beautifully maintained.
Monta D — Google review
Maybe for same it’s weird that animals in cages but it’s typical village life. Plus in some Google photos you can see that rabbits are let out to run in free. Owners keeping them safe from foxes and other predators. Baby rabbits are very cute ☺️ It’s big place better wear comfortable. Couple dogs here also but they are very friendly and like cuddles. You can see chicken with “pants” they walk funny 😄 Also goats, cows and cats.
Lilija J — Google review
We were just driving home when noticed a sign of a place. Decided to pop in aaaand were so happy that discovered such a wonderful and beautiful little village. Rabbits are so cute and their houses are like from the nursery stories. My little one was extremely happy! I don't remember the exact price, something around €3 I think.

Located in Riga's zaparks, the Riga Zoo features a variety of animals from around the world. It is a great place to visit for adults and children alike, with feeding shows being a highlight.
Very nice zoo, even in a rainy day. We really enjoyed the giraffe house and the hippos. Plenty of different animals to see and lots of cafe places and ice cream places to have a bite. Easy access to toilets too. Seniors got free ticket on Wednesday, kids €8 and adults €15.
Indy R — Google review
Visiting this zoo was quite enjoyable. In the beginning of the zoo, there were a couple of very small animal enclosures, which made us feel a little sad for the animals. After getting more into the zoo it became better and better. The tigers and rhinos were very cool to see, and the aquarium was enjoyable as well. There were also a couple of cool snakes and turtles. We had seen everything of the zoo in around 2,5-3 hours, which is a good amount of time. We liked that it wasn't too big, but it also wasn't very small. The entrance fee is low, which is great. The only downside is that that were quite a lot of the same type of animals, and there wasn't that much variety. Nevertheless the price/quality balance is really good, as we found it worth our money
Jonatan R — Google review
We decided to take a walk through the zoo on a cold, rainy autumn day and were pleasantly surprised. There were very few people, but we still got to see many animals. They all looked healthy and well cared for, which was great to see. The only thing as others have already mentioned is that the hippo really needs a better home.
English D — Google review
If you love zoo, you must visit it. As an animal lover, visit it frequently. There is wide variety of animals, starting from exotic ones (tigers, lions, puma etc) and ending with casual ones (owls, donkeys, utters etc). Animals live in spacious places. And since there are so many animals, you can always find there new animal babies. 🎉
BlueHope27 — Google review
Quiet and just fine zoo, there was low amount of visitors, so it is peaceful. There are different animals, there were a few I did not expect to see, some of the animals look exhausted. For tourists coming take in mind there is only a few information boards about animal facts and description on english, mostly Latvian only. Worth a visit if you haven't been to a zoo in a long time and/or want to hang out in a park. Tickets' prices are not friendly, they cost more than in Prague for example, which had much better zoo.
Aleksandrs F — Google review
We visited at October. No waiting and animals were active. Easy to get there with public transport. Big area so prepare to spend whole day there!
Terhi — Google review
The Riga Zoo is such a nice surprise! It’s set right in the forest, so walking around feels more like a nature walk with animals along the way. There’s a good mix of animals, the place is well kept, and it’s really relaxing to spend a few hours here. Great for families or just a quiet escape from the city.
Vlad A — Google review
It was OK..nothing really amazing. Seen a horse had very little space come parried to a few goats. Two Hippopotamus had earned no space to move. Could have been more water points for drinking water. Also some building could do with cleaning gutters. Not very well maintained. Bench could do with a clean...

The Corner House

Mentioned on
+17 other lists
Museum
Specialty Museums
The Corner House in Riga is a seemingly ordinary building in the city center with a dark past. Once the headquarters of the KGB secret police, it now houses the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. This museum offers visitors a chilling look into the brutal actions of the Soviet enforcers and where political prisoners were held during the city's Soviet control in the 1940s.
Visited the KGB Museum (Corner House) in Riga and liked how well it’s organized and that is free. That way more people would get to know about it. Walking through the old cells and interrogation rooms, you really feel the weight of history—chilling but important. The guides shared real stories from people who were held there, which made it all very real. Not a light visit, but if you’re interested in Latvia’s past, this place is a must.
George B — Google review
We had an amazing tour today of the museum, this happened because Jannis was our tour guide and he gave excellent performance and explained all the details regarding the museum. He was very engaging and answered all the questions we had, even gave us time to process everything that was said. I rarely get goosebumps but the way everything was said by our tour guide made it really emotional. I definitely suggest you going, it was an extraordinary experience.
S.A — Google review
This is a tricky review to write. It was an utterly harrowing experience, really showcasing the horrors of the 20th century and what people are capable of doing to each other. You can go into the main hall for free, however you can't go into the cells etc without a guided tour, but for the 15 euros it's really good value for money. I'm glad I did the tour and it's an important reminder that Freedom is never guaranteed. The tour guide was excellent, highly knowledgeable and struck the right balance of tone when presenting information. It's not an experience I would want to be doing everyday, but it's important to learn about this stuff.
Tyler L — Google review
Visiting the Corner House in Riga was a powerful and eye-opening experience. The museum does an excellent job of preserving the history of Latvia under Soviet rule, and walking through the cells and offices really brings the past to life in a very raw and emotional way. The guides are knowledgeable and provide important context that makes the visit even more meaningful. It’s not an easy place to visit, but it’s absolutely worth it if you want to understand Latvia’s recent history and the resilience of its people. A sobering yet unforgettable experience.
Henry S — Google review
JANES led an incredible tour with several surprises. He gave us layers of history from first Russian occupation to the Nazis to second Russian occupation. We saw videos of survivors telling their stories, photos and real paper work. We experienced the real cells of prisoners and their struggles. Can be very impactful
Toni T — Google review
The unassuming facade hides the haunting stories of the past. So many people had been allegedly falsely accused of all sorts of political crime. Under the pressures of the KGB interrogation, some had been broken. It is humbling to experience the rooms that had once tormented so many. The difference between this one and the one in Tallinn is this focused on the imprisonments. Whereas the other was more about the spying. Both have their interesting elements. Check it out.
Dennis T — Google review
Great tour guide! He treated us like prisoners which was hilarious 😂. On the other hand, it was a horrible place to find yourself even upto the early 90's
Chris G — Google review
Nice place to know the history of Latvia. I appreciate the Latvian preserve this historical place so well, so they can educate the next generation and the foreigners about the pain of Latvian people. It’s also a pleasure to have a nice guide, he talked in a vivid and informative way that made us immersed in the history. One small thing that made the tour less enjoyable: there was too many people for each session, made it hard to explore each place.

Shopping
Riga Central Market is a sprawling market located by the river, featuring both indoor and outdoor stalls offering a wide variety of goods. The market is housed in five historic buildings that were originally Zeppelin hangars, with each building specializing in different products such as fruits and vegetables, fish, meats, and more. The unique architecture of the market adds to its charm, with its metalwork dating back to the 1920s.
Riga Central Market is a vibrant and fascinating place to explore, and one of the largest and most unique markets in Europe. Housed in impressive former zeppelin hangars, it offers a mix of history, culture, and local flavors all under one roof. The variety is incredible—you can find everything from fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats to local cheeses, smoked fish, baked goods, and traditional Latvian delicacies. Outside, there are also stalls with clothes, crafts, and souvenirs. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, giving you a real taste of everyday life in Riga. It’s the perfect spot to try local snacks, meet friendly vendors, and take in the aromas and colors of Latvian cuisine. ⭐ Tip: Visit in the morning for the freshest products and fewer crowds.
Maria C — Google review
If you like great food at a reasonable price, the central market is waiting for you. SO MUCH FOOD! Everything was fresh and was as alluring to the nose as it was to the palate. So much variety, you will hardly know where to start. It's even fun if you're not hungry... just walk around and take it all in. Definitely recommend!

The best open market I’ve ever visited. Traditional meeting the modern in a wonderful mix. Vegetables, fruits, nuts fish, poultry, beef, clothes and lot of other things. I will be back.
Joel M — Google review
I visited Riga Central Market, and it was such a vibrant experience. The market is huge and full of life you can find just about everything here, from fresh flowers and local foods to meats, cheeses, spices, and handmade goods. It’s a great place to discover authentic Latvian flavors and everyday life. The market is set inside historic old Zeppelin hangars, which gives it a unique and impressive atmosphere. Each pavilion specializes in different products, making it easy to explore and sample a wide variety of items. I especially enjoyed seeing the fresh produce stands and traditional Latvian treats. It’s not just a place to shop—it’s also a cultural experience, perfect for walking around, tasting, and soaking in the local vibe. Prices are fair, and you’ll find both locals and tourists enjoying the market. If you’re visiting Riga, this is definitely a must-see. 📍 Location: Nēģu iela 7, Riga, Latvia

Nice and quick lunch spot in the gastronomy market they have different restaurants where you can have local food and buy local cheeses and souvenirs. A nice quick stop in the city. Haven’t take any picture of the dumplings but they were very good.

Great place to sample the local food. There are plenty of fruit and veg stalls, flower stalls and clothing stalls as well as a food market inside. They sell all the traditional dishes for extremely reasonable prices so a great way to eat like the locals. It’s a vibrant, buzzing area that’s definitely worth a visit.

Really big market with so much variety. There are different halls dedicated to different types of goods (the meat hall, the fish hall, etc). There's a hall that has eateries, and there are other retain shops throughout. Outside there are fresh fruits and vegetables as well as flowers. Definitely a must visit location for anyone visiting Riga.

A very unique market where each of the four large hangars offers something different, with wonderful caviar, meat, and fish products for sale, and outside, a marketplace and florists. I really liked it.

The Freedom Monument, a 42-meter statue located in the city center of Riga's Old Town on Freedom Boulevard, is a striking landmark that pays tribute to Latvians who fought for independence between 1918 and 1920. Unveiled in 1935, this beautiful monument features a granite base with sculptures and bas-relief, a 19-meter travertine column, and a copper figure of Liberty holding aloft three gilded stars.
The Freedom Monument of Riga is located at the centre of old town of Riga. It was built between 1931 to 1935 to commemorate the soldiers killed during the Latvian war of independence. The monument is 42.7 meters in height, made up of granite and copper. The three stars at the top represent the historical unity of the Latvian nation. The location of the monument is walking distance from most part of Riga. The monument is beautiful and the area surrounding of the monument is equally beatiful with flowers and greeneries. Nice place for taking a walk or relaxation.

The Freedom Monument in Riga stands proudly at the heart of the city, symbolizing Latvia’s independence and the spirit of its people. Just steps away, you’ll find the charming Bastejkalns Park, the elegant Opera House, and the bustling Old Town, each offering its own unique charm. A visit to Riga would not be complete without pausing at this monument and exploring the vibrant landmarks that surround it.

Freedom Monument – Riga We visited the Freedom Monument last Sunday on a cold, drizzling day, which somehow made the atmosphere even more powerful. Standing tall in the heart of Riga, the monument is a striking symbol of Latvia’s independence and resilience. Built in 1935, it honours those who gave their lives during the Latvian War of Independence, and remarkably, it survived both Soviet and Nazi occupations as a quiet but steadfast reminder of national pride. Even in the grey weather, the monument and the surrounding area felt peaceful and dignified. The eternal flame and the changing of the guards add a special sense of respect and history. Definitely worth stopping by—whether for the history, the symbolism, or just to take in one of Riga’s most meaningful landmarks.

A Powerful Symbol of Latvia’s Spirit The Freedom Monument is one of the most important and iconic landmarks in Riga. Standing tall and proud in the heart of the city, it’s a powerful tribute to Latvia’s independence and resilience. The sculpture is striking, and the surrounding area — especially with the canal and Bastejkalna Park nearby — makes it a beautiful spot to visit, reflect, and take photos. I’ve passed by many times but haven’t yet had the chance to attend one of the ceremonial guard changes or national events here — hoping to catch one in the future. Even without stepping closer, the atmosphere around the monument feels respectful and meaningful. It’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Latvia’s history and national pride.

The Freedom Monument (Brīvības piemineklis) is a must-see in Riga, symbolizing Latvia’s independence and national pride. It's beautifully located in the city center and perfect for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset. Changing of the guard happens hourly—don’t miss it! Tip: Combine your visit with a walk through Bastejkalna Park or stop by the nearby Old Town. Benches nearby offer a great rest spot. Ideal for history lovers and first-time visitors!

Sights & Landmarks
St. Peter's Church is a medieval church with a remarkable 123-meter-high steeple, dating back to the 15th century. The main attraction here is the Clock Tower, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Riga's cityscape and the charming red roofs of the Old Town. Despite its troubled history and multiple renovations, it stands tall as an iconic landmark in Riga. Visitors can enjoy various tours, including a popular walking tour that showcases the city's rich history and culture.
I would recommend this place for a good viewing point of the city. The church inside is nothing special, but the views from the point are worth the ticket price. As others have mentioned, there may be a queue for the lifts, both to go up and come down since there is only one lift in operation and takes only around 10 people each time. The views are nice when the weather is good, but the platform at the top is not too big, and as it's all outdoors, it can be a bit windy.

Beautiful church right in the heart of Riga’s Old Town. St. Peter’s Church is an impressively restored building, with restoration work still ongoing. A highlight is the elevator ride up the tower – the elevator may feel a little shaky, but it takes you safely to the top. From there you get a fantastic view over Riga and the Old Town. Definitely a worthwhile stop on a city walk.

Really beautiful church, well worth stopping by even if not religious. The building is stunning & the architecture is immense. You can pay extra to go up in the tower, which is an incredible experience. You get panoramic views of the whole city, including the river. It's a bit scary at first as the lift opens directly out onto the tower, but definitely power through!

St. Peter’s Church in Tallinn is one of those places where history, architecture, and atmosphere all come together beautifully ⛪✨. The church itself has a calm, almost timeless feel to it—like it’s been quietly watching the city change for centuries. The high ceilings and intricate details make you feel both small and amazed, the kind of place where you whisper automatically even if no one tells you to. What I loved most was how it blends solemnity with charm. It’s not just about bricks and stained glass; it’s about stories, traditions, and that sense of being part of something much larger than yourself. And of course, like every good historic church in Europe, it also gives you that gentle reminder that your photography skills will never do it justice. 📸😂 Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just need a quiet escape from the bustle of Tallinn, St. Peter’s Church is worth stepping inside. It’s a place that makes you pause, reflect, and maybe even wish your own ceiling at home was a little more “cathedral-like.”

The interiors are peaceful and filled with history, and for a small fee you can take the elevator up to the observation deck 🌆⬆️ which surprised me with stunning panoramic views of the whole city — rooftops, river, bridges, everything! 😍 The atmosphere around the church is vibrant, full of cafés and street life, making it the perfect stop during a walk through Old Town 🚶‍♂️💛. Alberta Street is one of Riga’s most beautiful and elegant streets, a true open-air museum of Art Nouveau architecture. Built mostly between 1901 and 1908, the buildings here were designed by some of Latvia’s most talented architects, including Mikhail Eisenstein, father of the famous film director Sergei Eisenstein. What makes these façades so captivating is the incredible attention to detail—flowing lines, ornate balconies, sculpted faces, floral patterns, and mythological figures all blending into a harmonious whole. This style, popular at the turn of the 20th century, reflected both the prosperity of Riga’s merchant class and the artistic freedom of the time. Walking down Alberta Street feels like stepping into a different era, when beauty and craftsmanship were just as important as function. The colors, textures, and whimsical details invite you to stop, look up, and admire every corner. ⭐ Tip: Visit in the morning for the best light for photography, and don’t forget to explore the nearby Art Nouveau Museum for more insight into this fascinating style.

The House of the Black Heads, a Gothic-style property constructed in 1334, showcases medieval cellars and a remarkable presidential silver collection. Despite being bombed during World War II, the building's architectural splendor was restored in the 1990s. Its Dutch Renaissance-inspired appearance features vibrant colors and exquisite ornamentation. The adjacent municipal square was built concurrently with the palace. Visitors can admire its stunning facade and explore museum exhibits and a re-created grand conference hall inside.
An absolute must-see in Riga! The House of the Blackheads is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Old Town — its stunning facade and detailed sculptures are breathtaking. The interior is equally impressive, with elegant halls, historical artifacts, and a fascinating medieval cellar that’s the only original part of the building. It’s hard to believe this place was destroyed in WWII and rebuilt in the 1990s — the reconstruction is so detailed, it feels like stepping back in time. Staff were friendly, and the exhibits are well organized and available in several languages. Perfect for history lovers, architecture fans, or anyone exploring Riga. Highly recommended — give yourself at least an hour to fully enjoy it!

Nice to see. Impressive reconstructed fassade. Nice exhibition inside but not necessary to pay entrance and to see the view rooms. For longer stay or if you are really interested. Otherwise just enjoy it from outside

The House of the Black Heads is one of the most iconic landmarks in Riga’s Old Town. Originally built in the 14th century as a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreigners, it has always been a center of culture and celebration. The building you see today is a faithful reconstruction, as the original was destroyed during World War II. With its striking Gothic façade decorated with Renaissance details, it is a masterpiece that reflects Riga’s rich history and vibrant spirit. Inside, you’ll find beautifully restored halls, exhibitions about the city’s past, and a glimpse into the life of the Brotherhood of Black Heads. I warmly recommend adding the House of the Black Heads to your itinerary when exploring Riga. It’s not only a chance to admire one of the city’s most stunning architectural gems but also to step into a place where history, art, and culture truly come alive.

Wonderful museum and reconstructed building. The original building was completed destroyed in the Second World War, and the present building was opened in 1999 but it's a beautiful replica as close to the original as possible and an iconic building of Latvia. The outside is spectacular and the indoor tour starts with a tour of the original foundations in the basement and historical information. The upper floors are grand hallways and stately rooms which are impressive. One of our favourite buildings in Riga.

Very nice museum. I liked the way the underground exhibition was organized, with stories abot what was happening in Riga, Latvia, Europe and the world at a particular time in history. The audio guide provides good information. The other floors are also interesting and beautiful. The silver colection is amazing. Well worth the visit.

🏰✨ An absolute gem in the heart of Old Riga! The House of the Blackheads is one of the most stunning buildings I’ve ever seen — beautifully restored, full of history, and glowing with character. The exterior alone is jaw-dropping 😍 with its intricate details, bright colors, and medieval charm. And once you step inside, it gets even better — gorgeous halls, historic artifacts, and a museum that brings Riga’s merchant past to life 📜⚔️🕯️. The ambiance is magical both day and night — it’s also one of the most photogenic spots in the entire city 📸✨. If you’re in Riga, this place is an absolute must-visit. 💯 Highly recommended for history lovers, architecture fans, and anyone who wants to experience the soul of Riga ❤️🇱🇻

A stunning gem in Old Riga with a captivating façade that reflects centuries of history. Originally built in 1334 for merchant gatherings and later home to the Brotherhood of Blackheads, this landmark features ornate Renaissance-Mannerist ornamentation added in the 1600s and late‑19th‑century sculptures by August Volz. It was destroyed in WWII and lovingly reconstructed from 1996–1999 with public and city funding. Today it houses a museum and elegant ballrooms, offers multi‑language audio guides, and displays a medieval cellar dating back to the 14th century. Perfect for history lovers and architecture fans!

With over 60,000 exhibits and an extensive audiovisual archive featuring more than 2,300 video testimonials, the museum provides a comprehensive overview of Latvia's history during this tumultuous time. It aims to remember and commemorate those who suffered unjustly during the occupations, including deportees, refugees, and those who were convicted or murdered.
Utterly incredible storytelling. Really enjoyed the unfiltered material, honest and brutal in instances. Highly recommend. If you want a full experience to read everything, take 1.5 to 2 hrs, but obvs can be done in less.

Be sure to allow time in your visit to Riga to tour this museum. Ideally visit when you can take the guided tour with a staff member. we did and it added so much more context to the visit. Dramatic museum about Latvia's traumatic recent history under the Soviet and Nazi occupations during the second world war and up to 1991. Lots to read and there are some dramatic films and exhibits. Makes you want to celebrate Latvia's independence with them by the end and wave a Latvian flag! There are lockers for bags but no cafe (there are restaurants nearby).

A super interesting collection detailing the Soviet Occupation of Latvia and the struggle of the people to reestablish their sovereign state. We did an English tour that was pretty rushed. We went back through the entire museum. It is laid out in chronological order and there is a "path" to follow. There's a cute teddy bear character that might keep kids interested with a few interactive displays. There are adult interactives also. The museum tells the tale of brave resistance fighters and you leave with a sense of the great national pride that Latvians have today, as they should !

An incredibly powerful museum with a very important story to tell. A good mix of modern interactive displays and more traditional museology exhibits that will help you understand the struggle of Latvia against several neighbours and the horrible impact of recent history, yet, their ability to persevere. As the largest medieval church in the Baltic States, it serves not only as a place of worship but also as a vibrant concert venue featuring its remarkable 19th-century pipe organ.
Beautiful and historic cathedral in the heart of Riga’s Old Town. The mix of architectural styles is really impressive, and the atmosphere inside is peaceful and inspiring. I especially recommend hearing the famous pipe organ if you get the chance—it's unforgettable. A must-visit when you're in Riga!

The Riga Cathedral is one of the oldest religious buildings in Latvia and the Baltic region. It was founded in 1211. The Cathedral has been rebuilt and enlarged several times over the centuries, having the architectural elements of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque etc. The Cathedral has one of of the world's most valuable historic organs from 19th century. There is an entrance fee to visit the Cathedral, but it's worth every penny. It's truly majestic and very beautiful inside. Don't miss the cloister and courtyard area that contain a collection of artifacts and canons too. There is an option to attend organ concerts, explore the organ balcony, and take tower tours, though we didn't do any of these. Highly recommend a visit to this

Riga Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the Baltic region, located in the old town of Riga. Unfortunately, there is a fee to enter, but if you are not interested in church architecture, it may be more interesting to visit other places such as museums. Also, on some important days in Latvia, free concerts are held in the cathedral.

You can't miss it! Everything about Riga Cathedral is big, bigger or biggest. It is the largest church in the Baltic States, the church is located on the largest square in the city and the organ was once the largest instrument in the world. The first church was built in 1211 by Bishop Albert van Buxhoeveden, the Romanesque altar is a reminder of this. At the end of the 14th/beginning of the 15th century the church was enlarged and given a Gothic appearance. The new, partly wooden tower that was completed in 1595 was one of the highest in the world at 140 meters. Because the tower had fallen into disrepair over the centuries (wooden structures were rotten), the Riga city council decided in 1775 to replace it with a smaller, "only" 90 meters high, Baroque copy. Despite all the destruction caused by fires and the Reformation, the interior has plenty of interesting things to offer: medieval tombstones, the pulpit from 1641, and the 6718-pipe organ. Riga Cathedral: you can't miss it, you shouldn't miss it.
Koen — Google review
Went for the organ concert at 12:00. It's a bit tricky to chose where to sit. I recommend coming around 15-20 minutes early to be zhere before tourist groups. Sit on the front benches facing the side of the cathedral. that way you can see the screen projectors on the collums at the front (they have a camera showing the organ player) and thr organ pipes in the back.

Impressive Lutheran cathedral in the centre of the old town. Lovely cloisters to walk around.

Haven't been inside but from the outside it's beautiful. Definitely recommend visiting here if you're in Riga.

Mežotne Palace

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Mežotne Palace is a charming destination to explore, offering the opportunity to stay in a stunning hotel. Located near Rundale, it's a must-visit for travelers seeking an enriching experience.
Place where you can see historical landmark. At the beginning tourist can visit palace square with old oaks, maples, larch. Recommended to see all around the area. Palace it self is major majestic and pure gorgeous. Near at summers you can swim at lake Lielupe.
John K — Google review
The must-visit place in the world. The most impressive palace I have seen in my travels. It offers complete access to every wing and floor for an immersive experience. It has been refurbished to the highest standards and is still showing a couple of rooms in progress. Rundāle's Palace preserves an incredible part of Latvia's history. The White Room is available for hire for weddings.
Liga T — Google review
The palace itself was closed, the surroundings are beautiful, especially the bridge that crosses the river. Not worth a special trip, unless you are in the area.
David L — Google review
Situated in the countryside this former small summer Palace has been converted to a hotel. Rooms are nicely decorated in the style of the era. The standard rooms are small the special rooms very spacious. Bathrooms are fine. I would have appreciated a coffee/tea maker and a small fridge. Public spaces are a bit staid. At the time my visit there was very little staff who were a bit reserved. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant were a reminder of communist times, a dinner menu with one of the two main courses not available for instance. Free parking.
Remco J — Google review
Free parking. Opening hours from 10:00 to 18:00. Visiting the park is free. In the summer season, if the Lielupe is not flooded, a pedestrian bridge across the river is available. The restaurant in the castle is no longer available. What is unique is that the exhibits in the halls of the castle display original objects that were in this castle in ancient times. The colors are authentic to the colors of that time. I recommend it.

Really nice place to see. You can stay in beautifull hotel. This in nice place to visit, if you go to Rundale.
Martin K — Google review
Went to the castle expecting to be able to see it. The woman at the reception, dissuaded me, and told me there is no reason to see it, since the rooms are empty and in disrepair. It is a long drive from Riga on an unpaved road for part of the way. In my opinion you can easily skip it and not feel too bad about it. There are more interesting places to visit in this area.

Mežotnes Palace, a beautiful Neoclassical palace on the Lielupe River near Bauska, is a true Latvian treasure. Designed by Giacomo Quarenghi, this meticulously restored 18th-century manor, now managed by the Rundāle Palace Museum, offers a captivating glimpse into aristocratic history.

It’s a hidden gem in Latvia. The palace is in really good condition, mostly thanks to the hard work of the restorers. Many rooms are open to visitors, including the duke’s and duchess’s bedrooms and bathrooms — definitely worth seeing. It’s usually not very crowded on weekdays. You can use an audio guide and access detailed room descriptions on your phone.

Beautiful, rich collection, friendly staff, almost no tourists in November yet highly operational. Interesting to see powder rooms and toilet closets. Impressive collection of “ household” peaces. Wonderful cafe switch beautiful service. Food served in aristocratic dish-ware. The clock outside is restarted with beautiful music playing at each hour with the sound stretching through whole yard yard. Very happy with our visit.

The Baltic Versailles! Amidst the vast fields and meadows of Zemgale (Semgallen) stands the most beautiful baroque palace in the Baltic States: the Rundāles Pils (Rundāle Palace). The palace was commissioned by Ernst Johann Biron, the lover of Tsarina Anna Ivanova who bestowed him the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. The famous Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed and built a palace inspired by Versailles. Since the Duke was exiled to Siberia by his political enemies in 1740, the construction of the palace took place in two phases. During the first phase (1736-40) the palace itself was built, and during the second phase (1765-68) the furnishing of 138 rooms and halls was completed. During the Latvian War of Independence in 1919, the palace was badly damaged. In 1933, the palace was restored/rebuilt when a school was established. After the Rundāle Palace Museum was founded in 1972, a thorough and long-term restoration was immediately started, which was only completed in 2015. Thanks to this restoration, the palace once again radiates its 18th century grandeur, which visitors can admire in 40 rooms and halls. In addition to the magnificent interior, the French gardens are certainly worth a visit. So all in all, Rundāle Palace is a destination that should not be missed on your itinerary!

Really glad we decided to drive and visit Rundāle Palace. If you had a car - don't skip this easy day trip from Riga. The gardens are beautiful - and it's aways interesting to see intricate buildings preserved. Impressive! We spent about 2.5 hours here in total. We visited on a Wednesday and bought tickets when we got there.

The Rundale Palace in Latvia was built in the 18th century. Though originally built as a palace it was used for various purposes including a school. In 1972 the palace and the surrounding gardens was established as a museum. It has 40 rooms exhibiting furniture, decorative pieces, paintings including painted ceilings. Very impressive from outside and inside, one of the most well preserved palaces in the world. The French garden adds to the charm of the palace. Ticket can be purchased together for the palace and the garden. We visited it on a "Tour and Transfer" from Riga To Vilnius. Highly recommend it.

The Palace of amazing beauty 🤩🥰 with a large French park nearby. The beginning of the palace dates back to the 16th century, although Rundale Manor is mentioned from the 15th century. To walk the main paths in the garden, inside the palace - will be about 6.2 km, and if you explore all the passages of the garden it will be more of km. 🙃 and you should dedicate at least 3.5 hours (you can run around faster, but it is better to walk slower 🙃). The price for an adult to visit all the places is 23 €, but you can also visit the garden and palace for 17 €, but then you will not enter one of the palace "wing" with another exposition. If you have already arrived at the place and have an opportunity - it is definitely worth visiting all possible places.

Outdoor Activities
Jūrmalas pludmale, also known as Jurmala Beach, is a stunning 25km stretch of sandy coastline along the Gulf of Riga. Once home to fishing villages, it has evolved into a popular resort town merged with Riga Seaside in the early 20th century. The beach offers picturesque views of the Baltic Sea and features soft white sand and surrounding pine forests, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
The beach is easy to reach and has soft sand, volleyball courts, and an outdoor gym. The water was about 16°C, still good enough for a short swim. We enjoyed the visit and would like to come back.

You can sit back and soak up the sun, watch the waves roll in, or even take a nap in a hammock strung between trees. You also might be able to meet some new friends while at the beach!

Lovely beach , been there many times since I live in Latvia . The only issue is that usually its really crowded but overall its really nice water is normally very warm and pleasant to swim in

The unexpected entry fee to Jurmàla put a dampener on our visit to the beach . You can’t purchase them online but you will find a vending machine before the entry ( which we missed) altogether a frustrating visit . The beach is long and nice for a walk . It’s probably lovely when it’s summer .

Architectural Buildings
Nestled in the charming town of Jurmala, the Dubulti Evangelical Lutheran Church stands as a stunning testament to Art Nouveau architecture, designed by the renowned Baltic-German architect Wilhelm Bockslaff. This impressive structure is not only one of the tallest buildings in Jurmala but also accommodates over 700 worshippers. Its intricate sculptural details and diverse facade decorations reflect a rich tradition of national romanticism, making it a visual delight for visitors.
A very nice and unique church. Its tower is complemented by the flower garden before the entrance. The interior is also nicely decorated, free entry. The lady greeting us was very friendly.

Absolutely stunning church. The blue domes are beautiful from the outside, but the real magic is inside... 😍 full of rich colours, gold details, and peaceful energy.
Bintang T — Google review
Stunning orthodox church with a sad story. The church traces its history to 1710, when Peter the Great, Tsar of Russia, arranged the marriage of his niece Anna to Frederick William, Duke of Courland. The duke promised to build an Orthodox church in Jelgava (then known as Mitau), his capital, but his premature death prevented this. Anna wanted to get married in this church that was yet to be built.

Perfect view on Jelgava FROM above on a sunny day, a bench under glass roof, but don't expect anything special
Oleg M — Google review
Little museum consentrated on different aspects of history- history of St.Trinity church, History of Jelgava and more. Museum exhibits are interactive and they have thought about children aswell accessability. Tower has elevator to move up and down. You still have to open the door to get into exhibition room and use glass staircase to get to city viewing area just under the glass roof. This may be an issue for some people. On top floor you can enjoy Jelgava city views through glass roof. Interesting place to visit. Not too time consuming unless you go through absolutely everything. Then it can take hours. Lady in the ticket office while I visited was really friendly and helpful.
Eiliki P — Google review
The crown jewel of the city. The tower has the best city views, the story of this important Latvian city, an excellent example of a romantic cafe (the best cafe ever for my very well travelled friend) with outstanding food and service, fun interactive galleries (try wedding clothes or period jewellery!), and paintings by Latvian artists.
Mira S — Google review
Not much to see there! The digital expositions are just ok. The view of the city at the top is not any great as the metal structure and the glasses disturb the view. Pictures are not worth up there, as you can see in one of my pics. Just the outside view of the tower is interesting.
Paulo V — Google review
The Jelgava St. Trinity Church Tower is a charming historical site with a lot of character. Climbing to the top rewards you with fantastic panoramic views of Jelgava and the surrounding area. The tower is well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and helpful, sharing interesting details about the church’s history. It can be a bit crowded during peak hours, but the experience is worth it for both the views and the insight into local history. A lovely spot for visitors exploring Jelgava!
Sarah S — Google review
I didn't expect this place to be so interesting! There are only 4 floors of thd tower open but each floor has a room with something interesting to find out. There is a floor dedicated to the city history, the church and Jelgava fashion. The 9th floor is a cosy place made of glass where you can seat and enjoy the view of the city. The 8th floor is the restaurant. The entrance fee for adults is 2.50€. There is WC and the elevator. Do spend some time in each room: it's worth it, especially the fashion room. They show a short video about fashion changing through the years. Recommended for visiting 💯%

Beautifully renovated tower. On the top you can oversee the whole city through the glass roof. On some levels exhibitions. While on the level with clocks you will find great restaurant. During lunch hours you can try simple, but very interesting lunch offers. In the evenings you can have nice dinner. Tasty choices for vegetarians. Interior fabulous.
Arvis V — Google review
Nice view on the observation deck of the tower on the 9th floor. Only $1 euro per person to take elevator up. We took the stairs down to visit the gallery and had lunch on the 8th floor. Beautiful decor and relaxing atmosphere. The frog legs, snails & mussels were all yummy.

An excellent Art and History museum, which in itself justifies making a day trip to Jelgava from Riga. It costs €4 to enter and that includes going up the tower. Although there are very few annotations in English, with some knowledge of history the exhibits speak for themselves. The part showing when Jelgava was the capital of the Duchy of Courland is fascinating, especially mention of its colony in Tobago.
David W — Google review
It is one of the main museums in Jelgava, where you can see not only art, but also exhibits that help you understand the history of the city. The museum is large, so make sure you have at least 2 hours to spend there, unfortunately we had to walk very quickly because we went near closing time, but the museum was very interesting.
Hüseyn Q — Google review
Gorgeous building with an even better interior. It has two floors, as the first one mainly focuses on the history of Jelgava, while the second has art exhibitions. I have to say, I was a bit disappointed because there little to no information in English on the first floor... I am really into history and I would've loved to learn more about the town. The art on the second floor truly blew me away, amazing paintings and beautiful exhibitions. Sadly, I couldn't visit the upper floors because they're closed in the winter (as are most things in Latvia...) but overall, I liked it, it was an enlightening experience.
Veronika К — Google review
Mainly info only in Latvian. You are always watched and you just step step out of a room, they switch off the lights immediately. So if you decide to return into the room - it is dark. It feels like they want you finish sooner.
