If you're looking to hit the slopes in Borovets, the Yanakiev Ski and Snowboard School is a fantastic choice for both beginners and seasoned riders. With a team of friendly and knowledgeable instructors, they ensure that every lesson is tailored to your skill level, making learning fun and engaging. Many visitors rave about their experiences here, highlighting how supportive the instructors are while also pushing you just enough to maximize your potential on the snow.
Fantastic, well trained instructors. We booked 2 hours of individual lessons for our children. By the end of the lesson, the children knew the basics and could ski down the easy ski slope. Polly, their ski instructor, was very patient and taught them willingly and skillfully. Never once did she get nervous, despite the dozens of times she had to lift the children off the ground. The equipment that Yanakiev Ski and Snowboard School provided was of high quality and checked twice according to the age, height and needs of the children. Be sure to call ahead to make a reservation as they are very popular and busy. All the employees working there were friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. Thank you.

I can highly recommend Polly - excellent communication, perfect English, clear instruction, helpful techniques, a passion for the skiing and the mountains. Her calm approach inspires confidence and is generally a very nice person to spend time with on the slopes!

We have never snowboarded before and had the most fantastic experience! We hired the kit, which was in great condition and well looked after. The team were super nice and helpful. Booking was really easy and the prices were excellent. We had 2 hour lessons over 5 days, and our instructor OJ was incredible, he was such a great teacher, he was fun, motivational and supportive. He progressed the challenges accordingly and we really felt we got most out of it, and we will definitely be back and booking again!

Just back from fab week in Borovets. 5th year of ski there. Wouldn’t get our equipment from anywhere else. Matt and his team have the best equipment, nicest team and very efficient system. I had private lessons with Matt who is empowering and relaxed and made me feel I could do anything. Thank you all! Cannot recommend enough.

This place is great. Efficient and friendly service in the hire shop, and very good instructors who explain things well. They know how to adapt their instruction for kids as well as adults, and they know when to push you so you get the most out of your lesson. I booked with them based on a recommendation from someone else who had used them and I was very pleased with my experience.

Museum of Socialist Art and Monuments

Museums
The Socialist Art Museum in Sofia, also known as the Museum of Socialist Art, is a national museum that showcases Bulgarian art and sculptures from the socialist era. Opened in 2011, it offers a fascinating collection of socialist sculptures, paintings, and other artwork. The indoor gallery displays stirring works of art from the period, while outside, over seventy statues adorn the grounds.
A definite cultural and historic must. Easy trip out on the Metro Subway or take the tram and a pleasant walk through the park of about 2.5Km. The statue garden is a fascinating piece of communist history. These are fine artists even if their artwork was co-opted for propaganda. Highly recommended.
Phae D — Google review
For me, this museum was worth it simply for the Soviet statues in the garden, which is free for all to access. We took the metro there and it’s a 10-minute walk from there. Each statue comes with an interesting Soviet design. There are many depicting Lenin. Since I grew up in Muslim Russia, it reminded me of home. My two friends thought it interesting, but not as much.
Austin G — Google review
It’s a decent museum of the communist era art. I’d say it’s rather small especially the exhibition inside of the museum. I had higher hopes to see posters and some more communist era arts inside. In a positive note, the clerks are the sweetest ladies, we visited the museum with a company of folks from the eastern block and had so much fun.
Andr B — Google review
Not easy to reach on foot (better to take a bus or taxi). The video is the highlight, especially if you already joined the Communist Tour. The exhibition itself is small, and the outdoor statue garden is okay. The viewing room was very hot with no fan or AC. Overall, nice but not essential.
Pamela — Google review
Well worth a little trip out on the Metro. Lots of old soviet era statues just planted in a small park behind a shopping centre. And a massive red star. That’s free, but pay a few Leva (around 5 depending on the day) and look at the socialist art in the gallery. Also a video of Bulgarian soviet history from late 1940’s ish
Paula P — Google review
I wasn’t expecting much but the garden looked pretty nice and there was no one there as we went there when the museum was already closed. I don’t know how it looks inside but the garden is great and is definitely worth a visit if you are nearby.
Jori K — Google review
Interesting museum that gives you a glimpse into Bulgaria’s socialist past. The outdoor sculpture park with old statues and monuments is the highlight for me, and the indoor exhibits show propaganda posters, paintings, and other artifacts from that era. Not a huge museum, but worth visiting if you’re interested in history
Walter W — Google review
5 STARS FOR GREAT LADIES WORKING THERE. One moment with them heal your soul, they are so nice. The ticket is really cheap, specially if you are student. The museum itself it’s small, there is not nothing really spectacular and it is a bit far from the center But it is nice to spend the morning

The National Palace of Culture (NDK) is an iconic building located in the heart of Sofia, Bulgaria. Established in 1981 as part of the state's 1300th birthday celebrations, this sprawling hexagonal structure hosts a variety of events including concerts, plays, and exhibitions. Designed by renowned Bulgarian architect Alexander Georgiev Barov, the building showcases socialist architecture with its sleek and minimalistic aesthetic, geometric lines, and imposing size. The surrounding gardens add to its historical significance.
We had a fantastic experience on the guided tour of the National Palace of Culture! The guide was knowledgeable and passionate, sharing fascinating facts about the building’s architecture, history, and impressive stage technology. Walking through the grand halls and learning about the cultural significance of the venue made me appreciate it even more. The tour was well-organized, engaging, and offered a unique behind-the-scenes look at one of Sofia’s most iconic landmarks. Highly recommended for anyone interested in architecture, culture, or simply looking to discover something new in the city!

Beautiful well manicured Park with cultural centre and fountains. Very busy when we visited on a Saturday but there was adequate seating and it felt very safe. Close to Metro stop. We stopped there for a picnic and although it was very busy it had a decent vibe.

Love this place. Day and night it's full with people(locals and tourists). The fountains are super nice and light up at dark. You can find people doing tricks, spinning fire, playing music, etc. great place.
Bilyana E — Google review
Better to visit in the evening as the lighting makes the experience far better (but no entrance inside). Also there’s another sight underneath the place.
Matthias R — Google review
A stunning and imposing building, it is one of the largest multifunctional conference and cultural centers in the world! One of the must see landmarks of Sofia that you shouldn’t miss out on!
Son L — Google review
If you like that Soviet Era architecture that is brutalist then this is your spot. On spring evening, May 2025, this buildings is among the ones lit up for the LUNAR light festival. Makes for an interesting juxtaposition of old and new. The park surrounding it is flat and filled with young skateboarders during the day and the young adult party goers at night, as the edges of the park are mostly bars and clubs. Overall, worth a visit for to quench your brutalist thirst.

Saint Nedelya Orthodox Cathedral

Mentioned on
+7 other lists
Eastern Orthodox Church
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of Saint Nedelya, also known as Sveta Nedelya, is an ornate Orthodox church located in the heart of Sofia. Originally a small wooden church dating back to the 10th century, it was later rebuilt into a grand cathedral in 1856. The cathedral features a majestic medieval design with a huge central dome and bell tower. Despite being severely damaged in a terrorist attack in 1925, the cathedral was reconstructed and still retains its historical charm.
Located just steps from Serdica Metro Station, Saint Nedelya Cathedral impresses at first glance with its striking neo‑Byzantine architecture and central dome that defines Sofia's skyline . As you pass through the entrance—free and welcoming—you're drawn into a serene interior enriched with vivid frescoes, ornate icons, and a beautifully carved gilded iconostasis dating from 1865 . Despite its tranquil ambiance today, the cathedral carries a profound and somber history. In 1925, it was the site of Bulgaria’s deadliest terrorist attack: a bomb exploded during a funeral service, killing over 200 people and injuring hundreds more . After rising from that tragedy, the church was meticulously rebuilt and restored by 1933 to stand once again as a place of worship and beauty.
Leandro H — Google review
While it's not the most famous nor emblematic church in Sofia, the locals seem to prefer or like it better than the patriarchal church that is known by many. You are allowed to take pictures inside but only with a 5 Lev or 2-3 euro donation. You can donate immediately on the counter to your left upon entering. Please donate if you are taking photos! The money is used for the church upkeep!
Nabil R — Google review

Ash — Google review
An impressive and beautiful cathedral located right in the city center. From the outside, its architecture with the large dome immediately draws attention and stands out in the skyline. Inside, it’s even more striking. The interior is richly decorated with colorful murals and frescoes covering the walls and ceiling, creating a contemplative atmosphere. It’s a place that manages to feel both grand and welcoming, offering a moment of reflection amid the city’s hustle and bustle. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates religious architecture and sacred art.

Discover the captivating National Archeological Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, housed in what was once the Ottoman Empire's largest mosque. The museum showcases a wide array of historical artifacts from Bulgaria's excavations, spanning from prehistoric times to the 18th century. Visitors can explore chronologically arranged exhibits, including prehistoric relics, medieval paintings, weaponry from the Late Bronze Age, and more. Don't miss the unique Vault hall featuring precious possessions that reflect Bulgaria's rich heritage.
Great place to see relics and archaeological things. In fact there are many history things not only prehistoric things but also many icons and roman periods. The museum is not very big but well curated and staffs are kind. The only thong you mind is there is a huge alarm when you approach to icons to look carefully. The sound is so huge😭
Mothusi — Google review
Wonderful museum in a former mosque. Incredible range of tools and beautiful objects from the Stone Age to a few hundred years ago. Manageable in 1-2 hours. A modest entry fee applies.
David S — Google review
Very nice museum, some amazing exhibits here from prehistory to modern times, especially interesting are the Thracian treasures. Historical information is quite lacking, however. All exhibits have English descriptions, but not much historical context. That could be improved.
Lior B — Google review
The archaeology museum is a good stop for a look back into Thracian, Greek & Roman periods. We visited for about two hours. I also recommend a good look at the Roman ruins around the Serdica Metro Station. This is not an expensive stop
Sam M — Google review
Just speechless. Do NOT miss the gravestones and their translations! And don't miss all the stuff upstairs. Trust me; if you love ancient history, you won't regret it. For a small museum, it had a wealth of treasures.
Marjorie G — Google review
The museum was overall quite impressive; however, it is housed in a former Ottoman mosque, and unfortunately, the original ceiling motifs have been completely painted over in white. In some areas where the paint has peeled off, the underlying patterns are still visible. It is rather disappointing to see such valuable historical and artistic details covered up, especially in a museum dedicated to archaeology.
Ecem Ç — Google review
Nice little gem in Sofia, the staff was nice. It was a little bit hot inside. Would recommend to translate everything on the ruins, makes the visits all the more interesting! Be sure to check the upper floors too 😄
Toot B — Google review
This was an intresting museum. It spans 2 floors. Bottom floor has stone statues and stone pillars primarily. The 2nd floor had different rooms depicting different times of Bulgarians history. From weapons to jewelry. One annoying thing was the group tours that I encountered in the museum. The shouting of the guide was just annoying when in a museum setting. And I mean shouting.

Ancient orthodox rotunda church "Saint George"

Mentioned on

Orthodox church
Sights & Landmarks
Saint George Rotunda Church, located in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a significant historical site as it is the oldest surviving church in the city and one of the oldest in Europe. Dating back to the 4th century, during the Roman period when Christianity was recognized as an equal religion in the Empire, this cylindrical red brick church with a frescoed dome holds great architectural and cultural importance. It is situated near remnants that suggest there may have been another building at its location initially.
A beautiful church in the center of Sofia. This is the oldest building in the city, dating back to the 4th century. It is built with red bricks from the outside. Although it is very old, the church is well preserved. It's nicely decorated inside, but it's a bit cramped and can't hold more people at once. There is no entrance fee. Inside you can buy cheap souvenirs.
Spase M — Google review
Really interesting the way it is situated in the court yard of the government buildings. Very rich and elegant inside in spite of what it looks like outside. I would say, go if you have time, if not, you can place it lower on the priority list. So many amazing museums and art galleries to visit so plan your time well!
Phae D — Google review
The Church of St. George is a truly remarkable place, the oldest preserved monument in Sofia. It is a small red-brick, circular church dating back to Roman times, set among modern buildings, which makes it even more fascinating. Inside, you can admire beautiful Byzantine frescoes from different periods, ranging from the 4th to the 14th century, well preserved and rich in detail. The atmosphere is intimate and spiritual, giving you the feeling of stepping back in time. It is easy to visit, with free entrance, and is located right in the city center, just a short walk from St. Nedelya Cathedral. An unmissable stop for anyone visiting Sofia, both for its historical significance and its unique beauty.
Francesco F — Google review
The oldest building in Sofia, and a miracle that it survived wartime bombing and communist indifference. Layers of history, beautiful ancient frescos and an unusual and interesting location. Free to enter, like most churches in Bulgaria. You're not supposed to take photos inside ;)

Lasting for over 1700 years, this church surrounded by ruins, is such a remarkable place to stop by. It's considered the oldest building in Sofia ! Definitely worth the visit and receiving blessings of St.George 🙏🏼

The Rotunda of St. George is one of the oldest buildings in the city, dating back to the 4th century. Its red-brick construction, circular plan on a square base and roughly 13-metre dome create a compact volume rich in history. I really enjoyed how this small building stands out within the urban context, lending the visit a sense of depth.

While visitors can’t enter the building itself, the area around it is lively, with several historic and government buildings nearby.

יש החלפת משמרות כל שעה, פרט לימים שבת וראשון. The official office of the Bulgarian President is housed in this building and therefore the building's honor guard and the guard exchange ceremony, which takes place every hour and can be viewed free of charge (except Saturdays and Sundays). At the entrance to the building are two armed soldiers, dressed in ceremonial uniforms from the 19th century, including a hat with a feather and rifles from this period. The ceremony lasts for five minutes! There are four soldiers who are replacing two who are standing outside, with whom they can also be photographed, if they arrive before the shift begins, and there are two more who are inside the president's house. It is recommended to arrive a few minutes before a round hour.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

Russian Orthodox church
Sights & Landmarks
Located in the heart of Sofia, the Church of St. Nicholas the Miraclemaker is a striking 1914 Russian Orthodox church with a vibrant tiled exterior and gilded onion domes. Designed by Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhenski in the Russian Revival Style, it served as the official church of the nearby Russian Embassy and community in Sofia. The architecture is reminiscent of Muscovite Russian churches from the 17th century.
a spectacular church - I particularly love the gold trim. it makes it seem super ornate and beautiful. it’s very nice inside but you can’t take pictures so you’ll just have to take me at my word for it. you can also go downstairs into the crypt which is cool. also they have paintings of biblically accurate angels on the walls which is nice to see
Antonia P — Google review
If you are interested in a better angle for photos, head over to the back of the church by the park. It is less busy and more chances of you getting a solo shot. This is the more humble and smaller church in the old city of Sofia. The architecture itself is reflective of most Orthodox Christian churches with the orb cupolas which are glistening and gleaming of gold. Still a cool stop to make during your walks!

This little Russian Revival style church is so cute and worth the visit. The golden domes are so unique of Russian churches and very attractive from afar. No wait or tickets and very little crowd during the week. Definitely worth a visit to receive blessings of St.Nicholas the Wonder-Maker 🙏🏼
Ash — Google review
I was truly impressed seeing this church, even if only from the outside. It looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale! The Muscovite-style architecture is very rich, full of details and vibrant colors. What stands out the most, without a doubt, are its golden, onion-shaped domes, which shine brightly and stand out in the city center. It is a unique building, different from everything around it, and perfect for taking some memorable photos.

Free entry. I was so impressed by this Russian Orthodox church, well maintained and looks just amazing inside. Plenty of people who only come to visit and plenty of people came to pray. Please respect both set of humans.

The Monument of Saint Sofia, a locally designed structure made from copper and brass, stands at over 15 meters high on a dark granite pylon. Erected in 2000, the controversial sculpture depicts Sveta Sofia holding symbols of fame, wisdom, and power. Located in the heart of Sofia across from Battenberg Square, it overlooks the city center and serves as a new civic symbol for the capital.
You know the city is something else when you find an imposing statue of Saint Sofia, who turns out to be the Patron of The City! Loved seeing it while on a walk both at night and day!

The statue of Sofia is a monumental sculpture and a symbolic landmark of the city.

Beautiful monument of the city's patron saint.
Paul T — Google review
The Statue of Saint Sofia, unveiled in 2000, stands in the heart of the city where a monument to Lenin once stood. Created by sculptor Georgi Chapkanov, it rises about 24 meters high and symbolizes wisdom, fame, and power represented by the owl, laurel wreath, and crown she holds. More than a saint, she embodies Sofia itself, the “wisdom” that gives the city its name. A must-see landmark right by Serdika metro station.
Patrizia P — Google review
It’s been a while since I last saw the monument. From memory, last time was in 2014. If I recall correctly, the monument symbolises justice for all. I may be wrong. Anyway, worth a visit, then wander through the centre to people watch! Worth a visit.

Serdika, located at the heart of Sofia, Bulgaria, has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Originally a Thracian settlement, it flourished as a Roman city known as Serdica. Throughout the centuries, it witnessed the rise and fall of empires, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. Today, Serdika remains a testament to its ancient past, with archaeological ruins, preserved landmarks, and a vibrant blend of modern life within its historic streets. Amidst Sofia's heart, I stroll with grace, In tulip blossom's vibrant embrace. A tapestry of colors, petals unfurled, Nature's masterpiece, a wonderous world. As I wander through each bustling street, The air is fragrant, pure and sweet. Tulips dance with the gentle breeze, Whispering secrets through the trees. Their vibrant hues, a joyful sight, A symphony of red, pink, and white. Each petal tells a story untold, Of beauty, resilience, and love untold. I walk amidst this floral sea, Where tulips bloom, setting hearts free. Their delicate presence, a feast for the eyes, A moment of bliss, beneath sunny skies. The city pulses with life and glee, As tulips sway, enchanting me. They nod their heads in silent cheer, Inviting dreams to draw near. I pause in awe, beneath their grace, Feeling serenity in this sacred space. Among the tulips, I find my peace, As their beauty grants my soul release. With each step I take, my spirit soars, In Sofia's heart, among tulips galore. Their splendor weaves a tale divine, As I walk through this blossoming shrine. Oh, tulips of Sofia, in full bloom, You bring life to the city's gloom. In your presence, I find delight, As we dance together, day and night. I cherish this season, pure and bright, When tulips paint Sofia with sheer delight. In this enchanting realm, I find my flow, Walking amidst tulips, my heart aglow.
Divertimento — Google review
The Monument of Saint Sofia in Sofia, Bulgaria, stands as a timeless symbol of the city's heritage and resilience. Towering over the bustling streets, this majestic statue pays homage to the city's namesake and patron saint, embodying the spirit of wisdom, strength, and endurance. The monument's graceful form and serene expression evoke a sense of reverence and admiration, drawing visitors to pause and reflect on Sofia's rich history and cultural identity. Surrounding the statue, lush greenery and vibrant blooms create a tranquil oasis amidst the urban landscape, inviting visitors to linger and soak in the ambiance. While the monument itself is a captivating sight, it's worth noting that the immediate surroundings may lack close environments for waiting, particularly during quieter times. However, the nearby landmarks and attractions of Sofia's city center offer plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery while awaiting a visit to this iconic symbol. Overall, the Monument of Saint Sofia is a testament to the city's enduring spirit and a must-see destination for anyone seeking to experience the heart and soul of Sofia, Bulgaria.
Ajay K — Google review
This monument or statue of Sofia was actually not as big in real life as in some of the photos. We were told that it's not where the city's name came from because it was installed much more recently. It is, however, a landmark that you can't miss, as it's right in the city center.

The Roman Amphitheatre of Serdica

The Roman Amphitheatre of Serdika is a historical site located in Sofia, Bulgaria. It was built around the 3rd - 4th century on top of a 2nd - 3rd century theatre that had been destroyed by the Goths. The amphitheater was among the largest in the eastern part of the Roman Empire and has a rich history dating back over 2000 years when it was initially inhabited by Thracians and later conquered by Roman troops.
The remains of the amphitheatre are located in the basement of the hotel and is used as an art gallery. Not so much to see, a small room with some ruins in good condition and a few wall pannoes that are really interesting.
Maria M — Google review
This place has been closed. Please view my attached photos and videos. You can see though through glass but it’s upto you whether you want to visit or not. Really nothing much to be seen here.
Ajay K — Google review
Not a huge amount to see, but worth popping in for completion if you're exploring Roman Serdica. They'll let you as far as just inside the hotel door to look (I think the hotel was closed at time of visit).
Rick — Google review
The Amphitheater which was built in 3rd and 4th century was discovered during the construction of a city hotel in 2005. It was laid on top a 2nd century Roman theatre. The current ruins are housed under the Hotel but are accessible to public free of charge (Tuesday to Sunday). It’s not of a must see but if you are staying in around Sofia and have of extra hours to kill, probably you can get here
Madhusudhan K — Google review
The amphitheater is located in the hotel. You can see through the glass. The hotel is closed so don't bother.
Joanna P — Google review
Well, yes, it's impressive to see when you imagine how it was. But these are ruins rising out of ground of a hotel. You get in, take pics for one minute and it's done. It looks more like an interesting element within the hotel' design. If you are nearby or stay there, take a look. Otherwise, don't spend your time on searching for this.
Tatyana K — Google review
I like the idea that this structure is preserved within the hotel and after preservation, the hotel included these ruins within the design of their building. It's free to enter but the ruins themselves are not that spectacular. It does look like a fun place to have drinks.
Lorne N — Google review
Outside the hotel you will see a few remnants from the amphitheater. Inside, walk down the circular staircase, and you will see the ruins. There's not a lot to see but, you'll have to use your imagination. It would be nice if there were some informative signs about the site. We were not permitted into the actual amphitheater area but the hotel obviously uses the space for gatherings. It would be fun to attend a function there.

Sights & Landmarks
The Patriarchal Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky is a renowned Bulgarian Orthodox church featuring stunning Neo-Byzantine architecture and an underground museum. Constructed between 1882 and 1912, it stands as one of the most significant landmarks in Sofia, honoring Russian soldiers who fought for Bulgaria's liberation from Turkish rule. This grand cathedral, named after a 13th-century Russian prince, is not only a place of worship but also a top photographic site in the city.
This place is stunning. The cathedral looks amazing, the entrance is free, but donations can be made, there are special boxes inside. Also, there is a small shop at the entrance, there you can buy souvenirs and candles. The place is not very crowded, we arrived in a Sunday evening and there were no issues. Definitely worth visiting when in Sofia.

Sofia’s most iconic and grand cathedral, and its size combined with its stunning architecture gives it a truly commanding presence. Construction: Built between 1882 and 1912 to honor Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), which liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Architectural Style: Neo-Byzantine, with striking gold-plated domes and intricate frescoes inside. Capacity: Can accommodate up to 5,000 people, making it one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world. Features: Lavish interior with marble columns, mosaics, icons, and a massive iconostasis. Significance: Serves as the patriarchal cathedral of Bulgaria, a national symbol of faith, history, and Bulgarian liberation.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is absolutely stunning and definitely a must see in Sofia. The architecture is breathtaking, from the golden domes to the beautifully detailed interior. What really impressed me is the feeling this place gives you. It truly evokes emotion, reflection and a quiet sense of presence. Inside, the frescoes are exceptional, full of depth and beauty, and they make the whole experience even more meaningful. Even if you have seen many cathedrals before, this one really stands out. Iconic, impressive and full of history, it adds something special to your time in Sofia.

The Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of those places that truly catches your eye the moment you see it. Its massive size, golden domes, and unique architecture make it stand out instantly in the city. You can’t help but stop and admire it from the outside. Once you step inside, the atmosphere completely changes. It’s quiet, spacious, and full of beautiful details. The murals, icons, and soft lighting create a calm and almost mystical feeling that makes you want to walk slowly and take everything in. One of the best things is that entrance is completely free, so visiting is very easy. The area around the cathedral is also lovely for a walk, taking photos, or just enjoying a bit of local life.
Victoria C — Google review
Such a wonderful cathedral and the largest in the Balkans. It's Neo-Byzantine style is glamorous and admirable. The artwork and chandeliers were such an eyesight. The cathedral is a symbol of Sofia and must visit. There was no wait time during the week and no tickets. A small donation to light up a candle is a nice idea. The crowd was very low.
Ash — Google review
I was lucky enough to walk in during service and it was magical. There was a beautiful choir singing and the sound was spectacular. I was in tears. The building and the energy almost commands you to be present. The visitors were very respectful. A must visit. I would assume Saturday afternoon is when they have a service.
Lefteris M — Google review
Free entry. You can either pray or visit or both. One of the most iconic landmarks in Sofia with pure golden roof finish donated by Russia long time ago. Inside, all those riches and hand painted pictures of all Bulgarian saints. Regardless of your faith, it must been seen while visited Sofia.
Krzysztof Z — Google review
A breathtaking masterpiece Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is one of those places that compels you to stop, look up, and remain silent. Its grandeur can be perceived from afar, but it is only when you get closer that you can truly appreciate every detail: golden domes shining in the sun, a majestic facade, and an almost magical feeling that accompanies every step. Upon entering, the atmosphere changes completely: soft lighting, the scent of incense, and wonderful icons that tell centuries of faith and history. Even those who are not religious cannot remain indifferent in the face of such beauty. Everything seems to speak of spirituality, art, and Bulgarian identity. I recommend visiting both during the day, to admire its architectural magnificence, and in the evening, when the lighting makes it even more evocative. A must-see for anyone passing through Sofia: it is not just a cathedral, it is an experience that remains in your heart.

The Basilica of Saint Sofia, a 6th-century Byzantine church, is a stunning architectural marvel in the heart of Sofia. Its largely brick interior and captivating paintings, along with an underground crypt, showcase a blend of Byzantine and Bulgarian Revival styles. This historical site holds great significance to the city's history and was built on the grounds of ancient churches and a necropolis.
The Church of St. Sofia is a place full of history and charm. Walking through the ancient brick walls and exploring the ruins beneath is like stepping back in time. The underground remains offer a fascinating glimpse into Sofia’s past, making this site a must for history lovers

One of the oldest Orthodox churches in Sofia. You can sense the age of the building which was built in the 4th century. It's worth the visit since it's dedicated to Saint Sophia. Unfortunately, the only negative experience was the rudeness and hostility of one of the staff. I didn't realize there was a fee to take photos, so the man approached me aggressively to demand the fee. There's no problem, I considered it a donation but, I hope someone could talk with this staff for a more friendlier approach.
Ash — Google review
This church is one of Sofia’s most important historical landmarks and among the oldest in the region. It was built in the 6th century during the Byzantine Empire, and its red-brick architecture and imposing dome reflect the solidity and simplicity of Byzantine style. The building’s architecture is quite different from more ornate cathedrals, showing a rustic charm inside, with thick walls and narrow windows. The church’s simplicity and austere appearance create an atmosphere of serenity, calm, and contemplation, leaving a strong impression while telling centuries of history. Visiting the main church is free. For those who want to delve deeper into the site’s history, there’s a fascinating archaeological museum in the crypt. This underground section displays the church’s ancient foundations and Roman tombs from the old city of Serdica, with mosaics dating from the 3rd to 5th centuries. Entrance to the archaeological museum is paid (around 3 euros or 6 BGN).

The Central Synagogue of Sofia, also known as the Sofia Synagogue, is a significant landmark in the Bulgarian capital. This early-1900s Sephardic synagogue boasts an impressive octagonal dome and a large chandelier. It also houses a museum showcasing the rich history of the Jewish community in Sofia. Situated in the Square of Religious Tolerance, it stands as one of four places of worship at each corner, reflecting the city's religious diversity.
We visited this great synagogue and were impressed by its cleanliness and peaceful atmosphere. The admission process was straightforward, requiring only a show of ID or passport. The entry fee of 10 local currency was reasonable. Overall, a wonderful experience exploring this beautiful synagogue

Impressive building. You have to ring the bell and go through security to get in, including showing your passport. They provide a QR code to access an audio guide from your phone, so phone and headphones are desirable. Our audio guides didn’t work very well but we still managed to get most of the information. You can do it comfortably in about 30 minutes. Entry fee of 10 lev per person.

The Central Synagogue of Sofia is one of those places that immediately commands quiet admiration. Its grand Moorish-style façade, with detailed arches and colorful tiles, stands as a beautiful reminder of Bulgaria’s rich cultural mix. Inside, the space glows softly under a massive brass chandelier, one of the largest in Europe, casting golden light on the intricate patterns and marble columns. Even if you’re not religious, it’s hard not to feel a sense of peace and awe here. The synagogue feels like a gentle heartbeat of history and resilience, still shining at the center of Sofia’s story.

It was interesting to learn about Jewish practises and the hostory of Jews in this part of the world. I think the experience is worth the 35 lv price of admission. (although there was no reduced price for a 3 year old). only three complaints: - the kids pool needs some sort of shadow over at least part of it. - there was absolutely NO soap in any of the dispensers in the bathrooms. - the deers in the zoo had a very small and dry enclosure, with zero shade in the 40 degree heat. they were agitated and clearly miserable. not a good animal to keep in such poor conditions. the place would make a better impression not having deet at all.

Built in the 13th century, with the fall of Bulgaria under Turkish slavery from 1396, which rule was extremely cruel, the temple was burned, devastated, destroyed, deserted and rebuilt many times. The last re-built took place in 1867. The churches are incredibly beautiful. The monastery has a rich collection of many relics. The monastery courtyard and surrounding meadows are magically energizing and calming - beautiful, clean, tranquill and quiet. You can spend the night(s) in the monastery, paying peanuts price and the rooms are spotless clean, simple but offer everything you need for a pleasant rest and sleep. Nearby there are restaurants with a big menu and good quality food. The monastery shop offers a wide variety of drinks and jams made by the nuns in the monastery using very old authentic recipes. A gorgeous, energizing place, whether visited for a few hours or a few days

Very well kept and well renovated monastery , all paths clean and very serene and quiet setting . No entrance fee , large gift shop with amazing honey, jams and herbs as well as religious icons . On site restaurant with decent Bulgarian cuisine reasonably priced, lots of free parking.

It is very beautiful monastery placed on magnificent location rounded with dark green forest. The buildings and the space is good maintained. But the prohibitory signs (don't make pictures, don't speak etc) are very boring. The restaurant before the monastery serves tasty food.

The Klisura monastery stands below the Todorini Kukli peak at the Balkans, and from a far you may feel it's just a small monastery, but in fact it's the 4th largest in Bulgaria. Historically, it's built in the 13th century, and on numerous times destroyed during the Ottoman yoke, but after the liberation of Bulgaria, its rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, and currently it's freshly renovated as well. (The church renovation just finished) The Klisura is indeed a special monastery, currently a women's monastery, and has a special air within it. Maybe it's because one can feel the blessing of the martyrs who were killed a bit to the north of the monastery (there's a miraculous water fountain at the place) or maybe it's monastic life that's very developed here, but the nature and the spirit just give away a sense of blessing. This is a place to come and feel at peace with yourself, to be welcomed very warmly, and to be able to even order a specially drawn icon for home.

A beautiful, peaceful monastery, which is almost entirely wheelchair accessible! The church is perched on a hill in the middle of the yard and there's an electric ramp for wheelchairs. The yard is beautiful and perfectly maintained, with lots of flowers and greenery, and a river. There are rooms which can also be rented for a night or two in traditional Bulgarian-renaissance style buildings around the church. There are also wheelchair accessible toilets, a children's playground, a souvenir shop, and a restaurant, which is located right next to the entrance of the monastery. Definitely a must visit place!

Very pretty, green, peaceful monastery complex. It has a church and a chapel. Also a museum. There are a couple of restaurants and souvenir stalls just outside. Free entry. Car park right outside.

This a small but well maintained monastery. I go there regularly to light a candle, remember the dead and say a prayer for those alive. What is impressive about this monastery is that they make their own dessert wine and honey. I highly recommend it for own consumption or as a gift. Needles to say nature is beautiful any time of the year. Overall, a nice place.

Small museum. The house is one floor building and you can see almost everything inside for 15 minutes. But the furniture and the amenities make this place unique

Ledenika Cave

Caverns & Caves
Sheathed with winter ice, this cave opens in summer & is lauded for its stalactites & stalagmites.
Amazing! It does not take longer than 30 minutes to visit. The cave is smaller compared to others but it is definitely worth it to see. They are giving audio guides that explain and lead you through the cave. The formations are cool and they definitely bring a lot to the cave’s name.
Nicky — Google review
Beutiful formations! This cave is one of the best I have visited so far. I didn't expect how huge it is! It was like a hike. So much climbing, a bit of crawling. It wasn't hard, but so much fun! Just expect there are a lot of stairs!
Lyudmila M — Google review
Perfect for a hot summer day. 7 degrees Celsius inside. The guide was very nice.

We had such a great time here, highly recommend! It’s fun for both adults and kids. Just make sure to wear shoes with good grip, as it can get slippery. One thing to note: there’s no English tour guide, so if you don’t speak the local language, it helps to read up beforehand. Still, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope you will too!
S J — Google review
Very interesting place for people who appreciate such things. Guide was very friendly but English is bit of a challenge. This is a must visit for people who love natural history and geology. It is also very interesting for people who enjoy dabbling in mythological history, as the caves offers a number of mythological tales and connections. The drive to the place is also very scenic. Not sure if public transport reaches the place. For some reason there are no immediately available toilets. The staff send you uphill towards the kiosks outside while kiosk operators send you to the building outside the Caves...

Nice place, some places could be not appropriate for big people
Alexei R — Google review
The cave itself was very interesting, however i do not think it is kept “untouched” and safe from visitors. Lots of people threw coins in places, which I do understand is part of the culture, but nonetheless- not the place to do it. Because of all of the lamps, now some plants and moss has started growing. Overall, my biggest issue was with the lack of consideration from the visitors with children - if your child shouts and runs in there and ruins the whole informational speech from the guide, maybe, it is not the best place for 2-7 year olds.
Natalia S — Google review
I recommend visiting in the winter as you can get very nice frozen structures, which can represent the much slower forming cave structures. Also, it's it's a much less busy season, and you can get a more personal tour with the extremely friendly staff. Even though it can't be proclaimed as an "untouched" cave, it has interesting history and lots to see. Be prepared for some tight passes and having to bend down occasionally.

Surprisingly large museum, good for some hours of regional and Bulgarian history. Highly recommended!

This is a gem that's little known but hosts the most famous treasures and historical artifacts from Northwestern Bulgaria including the biggest ever found silver treasure. A must visit destination if you are in Vratza.

A museum with potential. Interesting and big exhibition but definitely needs renovation. If you have dust allergy keep in mind that this place is veeeery dusty. Don’t expect a museum like those in Western Europe. Still a good place to visit for a reasonable price.

The Regional historical museum of Vratsa is a great place to visit, if you want to learn about the ancient history and heritage. Not only of Vratsa, but also of the whole country. One of the highlights of the museum is the “Rogozen Treasure” Room Exhibition. The Rogozen treasure (1985 - 1986) is a valuable source of information about Thracian culture and ancient art. In addition, you can also enjoy the museum's art gallery. There is a new exhibition every month - always thoughtfully selected and mindfully arranged works if art. Congratulations to the main gallery curator - Milen Ivantchev, who is also a local well-known and sincerely respected sculptor! Whenever you come to visit Vratsa, do spare some time to enjoy the Regional historical museum! You won't regret it!😉

Saeva Dupka Cave is a fascinating destination steeped in history, having been inhabited since Roman times. This stunning cave not only showcases remarkable geological formations but also serves as a unique venue for live music concerts, adding to its charm. Visitors can embark on small group tours that include the nearby Gods Eyes Cave and Glozehne Monastery, allowing for an immersive experience of Bulgaria's natural beauty and rural tourism.
Fun experience! Worth a visit! There is a parking lot. At 7pm on a Saturday there was space to park. Parking was free. There are public washrooms before the cave but they are poorly kept. The attendant at the ticket office was very kind. Once entering the caves it was cold, pants and jacket recommended. Inside the caves it was a cool experience to see all the different geology. It tool about 30 minutes to see all of the caves inside. The walkways can be strep and slippery so good pair of shoes recommended. The guide did not speak English but tried to explain as much as possible in gestures and few English words.

Beautiful! Camera/pictures can’t fully highlight the beauty! The surroundings of the cave gives the feeling of a garden park;fresh air! We arrived and parked the car in the free parking area. Then we walked for about two minutes—or even less—and reached the ticket office. The first person we saw didn’t speak English, but within 30 seconds, another man appeared who did speak English. He seemed like the manager or someone in charge and told us we could enter. We went in without paying and without a tour guide. After about 23 minutes, we came out and were then asked to pay . After paying in cash,we asked the English-speaking man if he could tell us a bit about the cave, and here is the information he shared: • The cave has 99% humidity. • The temperature inside was 8°C. • It is 250 meters long. • It features stalactites and stalagmites. • There is 1 cm of growth between them, which takes approximately 150 years to form. • The cave was opened to the public 56 years ago. • It is 3.5 million years old. • It was discovered by two brothers. FYI: 1)Close to the free parking area, there’s few covered areas to sit and eat. (2)Before entering the cave, there is toilet by the other side of the cave entrance once you pass the ticket office and come down the stairs. 3) Working hours Or 01.01. 10.30.09. 9,00am-1800(6pm) Last entry into the site 17,30(5:30pm) Or01.10.10 31.03, 9,00am- 17, 00 (5pm) Last entry into the site at 16,30(4:30pm) 3)You pay only in cash as of when we visited.

I visited a large cave recently with a guided tour at first, which was really informative and engaging. After the initial walk, we were allowed to explore freely on our own, which made the experience even more special. The cave’s size and rock formations were truly impressive. Outside the cave, there was a little box with baby chickens, which I absolutely loved — such a cute surprise! A unique and memorable adventure for nature lovers.

Stunning caves! Huge internal caverns. Visited on a Monday (am). Only a local coach school trip there and no queues. Free parking, toilets and a small shop. Well maintained paths (had been heavily raining for last couple of days but no issues). Imagine in summer it could be busy and experience longer delays. Some (optional) steep stairs inside, may not suit all.
Andrew M — Google review
A very well maintained, unique looking cave. The guide was extremely well versed and engaged with the group, sharing interesting facts.

This is one of the most beautiful caves we have ever visited. It is quite large. You can pay in euro or leva (July 2025). Definitely worth it! Keep in mind that the road to the cave is a disaster, be careful while driving! We visited it in the morning and there were a lot of free parking spots. The price is 12leva/adult and 6 leva/child.

Prohodna Cave

Prohodna Cave, an 860-foot-long karst cave with two large eroded 'eye' holes in its ceiling, offers a fantastic opportunity for a daily escape from Sofia. The natural beauty of the cave is truly breathtaking and it's free to enter and quite safe, making it ideal for visitors without experience or equipment.
A Natural Masterpiece – Truly the Eyes of God! Absolutely breathtaking! Prohodna Cave is one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders I've ever visited. The two symmetrical openings in the ceiling — famously called the “Eyes of God” — create an atmosphere that’s both spiritual and surreal. When sunlight shines through, it feels like you're being watched by the heavens. The cave itself is easy to access, with a short walk from the parking area, and there’s no entrance fee. You can walk through the whole cave in about 20–30 minutes, but take your time — it’s worth soaking in the view from all angles. Bonus: if you're into adrenaline, there's bungee jumping from the large entrance (only on certain days). Rock climbers also use the area, but even for a casual visitor, this is a must-see. Tip: Wear sturdy shoes — it can be a bit slippery, especially after rain. Definitely one of Bulgaria’s hidden gems. Don't miss it if you're in the region!

Amazing place! Visited Monday evening and there were just few people. There is another entrance from the other side and locals use that entrance since there is no hiking required at all (not sure about the road quality though). But we were the only ones who parked at Google spot. The climb is kind of steep at some places. Good shoes are the must!
Lyudmila M — Google review
Fantastic place!!! Breathtaking scenery and views! You do not have to pay or buy tickets and there is a free parking! If you have good sneakers, I suggest you visit the monastery (there are signs showing direction).
Zelionii K — Google review
A beautiful cave with high ceilings and open fresh air. Very good for people with claustrophobia, light and air are always abound. Small cave and easy to explore, a few parts of it are a bit slippery though so appropriate shoes would be advised. The highlight of the cave are the two eye-like holes in the ceiling that look like eyes, and hence the name “eyes of god” they have. Reaching the rear opening of the cave there are paths that lead downwards to the banks of a river and then theres another path that leads up the mountain,to a little monastery made of stone. Very dangerous path that one, proceed only with caution,if at all.
Ivan M — Google review
Beautiful cave, mesmerizing. Unfortunately, too many people don’t know yelling in caves is the worst idea, because the echoes amplify the vibrations and make the very unstable rocks fall
Anton G — Google review
A Must-Visit Natural Wonder Prohodna Cave, with its famous “Eyes of God,” is absolutely worth visiting — it’s one of the most impressive natural sights in Bulgaria. Walking through the massive cave is an unforgettable experience, and afterward, you can follow a path leading to a stone monastery and even climb higher for an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding gorge. It’s an easy trip with stunning scenery and a unique atmosphere — don’t miss it if you’re in the area!
Minas A — Google review
Great cave. The path continues and ends up at a guest house in the mountain with an amazing view and food at the restaurant.

What a natural miracle. Beautiful place. The view from the top is breathtaking.Make sure you have non slip shoes especially if you explore the paths in the back. It's so peaceful to walk and hear the birds and the river. A must see spot.
