History Museums
The Ingres Museum is located in a stunning riverside mansion in Montauban, between Toulouse and Bordeaux. It houses an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and drawings by renowned artists such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Emile-Antoine Bourdelle. The museum also served as a hiding place for the Mona Lisa during World War II. Visitors can explore opulent rooms and admire the extensive collection of artwork, including portraits, mythological figures, and architectural elements.
I enjoyed our visit today. There is a car park very close to the museum which had spaces for us on market day. The machine to get a parking ticket from is complicated and reacts to key presses very slowly but there is an option to choose English which helps. Counter-intuitively the choice of time for your stay is towards the end of the process. The museum has good toilets opposite the reception office. There are 4 floors and finding how to get into the upper floors was a challenge. The entrances are behind a blank metal door off the stairs. There are no intelligible signs saying "Turn this handle"! But once you get in there is a lot to see. We enjoyed our visit.

Very interesting museum. More of an art gallery. Some great Boudelle sculptures and a whole series of Venetian School art. Not my taste but interesting in their own right. The building has beautiful ceilings
Susan C — Google review
The recently renovated building is almost as lovely as the collections it holds! A truly impressive and educational collection of a local artist's work. Amazing collection of sketches and models of works that grace both the US and UK national galleries plus many more. The spaces and exhibits for the temporary shows equally impressive. A must visit in Montaubon!
Roger — Google review
It is a beautiful building showcasing some fantastic art. A good mixture of paintings and sculptures, with one room dedicated to the sketches of Ingres. Finished the trip with a visit to the cafe for tea and a pastry.
Ian H — Google review
I loved this museum for the permanent collection of both Ingres and Bourdelle and found the collection interesting and educational.
Michael F — Google review
This museum is very interesting and depicting the correlation between the two artists Ingres and Bourdelle which is very interesting to understand. As well, the museum shows the personal collection of arts and drawings from Ingres which provides a strong perspective on Ingres' creation process.
Fabien D — Google review
Excellent art museum close to the centre of Montauban. It is the first time I have revisited it since the renovations and they seem to have done a very good job. All the exhibits are well displayed too. I particularly enjoyed the basement area in what felt like an old chapel. Many nice displays, some quite amusing. Recommended.

Hi all, before to start to describe this place, think about how little we know about what surrounds us? Very beautiful area and if you order a guide who just an hour or a little more will tell you about the history of all the places and buildings and people who lived in this city you will understand how much surrounds us. I would highly recommend you to visit the city of Montauban.

Great, smaller town square with deep brick arch colonnades, ideal in hit weather. Bars and street food all around, and a fantastic squirting/misting water ' fountain' area for the kids to play in and get wet.

Bruniquel Castle

Temporarily Closed
Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Bruniquel Castle offers a nice visit with beautiful views of the town and valley. The museum part of the tour may be lacking in information, but the guided audio tour provides valuable insights. The small parking lot by the castle is convenient for visitors, especially those with strollers. For a moderate fee, visitors can explore two well-preserved castles and learn about paleo cave dwellings.
Better than I had expected. This is more than a “double castle site” as it’s a small village that was once upon a time a larger town. It has tumbledown properties in amidst those which have been renovated and it’s very much a lived in village. The ascent from the car park was very manageable for the average person again not as steep as perhaps reviews had led me to believe. There is a very good tourist information office as you enter the village. There is parking at the top of the hill with easy access to the village and castle. There are some restaurants so refreshment is easy.
Deryn H — Google review
What an awesome amazing castle. I took the audio accompaniment in English and if I was to visit again, I would take it again! It is a must if you want to get the most out of your visit. Lovely friendly English speaking ladies on reception who are knowledgeable about the castle. You can tell they really enjoy their job. The castle is in various states of repair. Restoration work has been carried out in most of the rooms that are open & available to the public to see. I appreciated seeing what unrestored parts of the castle looked like too.
Margaret C — Google review
Spectacular setting but you need to stop on the road to the village to get the best photograph as once you reach the castle you are too close and at the wrong angle to photograph it all. It costs €5 to enter and the lady at Reception was extremely helpful, giving us a map and explaining the recommended route. It doesn't take long to see everything, we did it in about 20 minutes. There is a recorded guide available which probably takes longer.
John L — Google review
What a lovely place this is with plenty to do and see. The village is very pretty and the castle is amazing. Well worth a visit
Marie P — Google review
An impressive historical monument since 1840, the building (12th, 13th and 17th centuries) is built at the very top of the cliff overlooking the confluence of the Vère and the Aveyron, on the site of an ancient Roman castrum. Property of the Counts of Toulouse in the 12th century, it was shared in the 15th between two branches of the House of Comminges, which explains the current division into the Château Jeune and the Château Vieux. Also known for having been the filming location for the movie "Le Vieux Fusil" with Romy Schneider and Philippe Noiret ...
Enjoy L — Google review
We had a much better experience than we had expected, based on a review by a local guide. As others have said, the reception staff are very helpful. We were given the choice of the audio guide or a written guidebook. We opted for the latter - which was in English and French - and found it very useful. A wonderful location and two very interesting castles. Rather puzzled about another reviewer’s comment about cobwebs; in a building dating from 12th century, how surprising!
Jeremy P — Google review
Wonderful medieval village and castle definitely worth to make the detour. Nice small cobblestone alleys that lead to the top of the village (relatively steep climb but not very long), where the old (medieval) and the new (16th- 17th) castles are located. In the museum you find the details of the Neanderthaler found here as well as the cave discovered around 1990.
Henri L — Google review
2 Castles side by side located on a cliff 90 metres above the adjacent river. This is a very interesting place to visit with a fascinating history. We spent several hours wandering through the castles and grounds listening to the self guided tour information. Well worth a visit.

Pont Valentré is a narrow medieval pedestrian bridge located in Cahors, Occitanie, France. It spans the Lot River and is known for its pointed arches and three stone towers. Built in the 14th century as part of the town's defenses, it features parapets designed for defenders to drop missiles on attackers below. The bridge was proposed as a defense against invasions from the south and is one of the city's iconic medieval structures.
Beautiful and not that crowded. It has a small Panama Canal to see boats moving from lower level to higher level of the river. Goid view of the city.
Tin N — Google review
I was truly speechless when I saw this nearly 700-year-old bridge. Its history and architectural beauty are simply breathtaking. We took our time walking around it to admire it from every angle, appreciating the stunning bridge.
April W — Google review
This bridge is absolutely beautiful and amazing to see how high this is too. Also encountered a very friendly cat. It’s all free to visit and there are free parking spaces about 5 minute walk away.
Kindness A — Google review
Take your time to look at more than the bridge, the museum is well worth a visit and it's well worth looking around. It would be good walking country, but not in the heat.
Keith R — Google review
I loved my walk and visit to this lovely medieval stone Bridge with its nice views down the river and the surrounding hillsides. Its very close to the town and has plenty of walking path from either side of the river Lot. The bridge is in great condition and well maintained. Highly recommend.

Just incredible and so well preserved! I recommend you visit this place after sunset to appreciate it when all lit up and reflecting on the water below!

Cathédrale Saint-Etienne is a stunning Romanesque/Gothic cathedral located in the picturesque old town of Cahors, South West France. The cathedral features two Byzantine-style domes and exquisite stained glass windows, creating a serene ambiance inside. Visitors can explore the peaceful cloister with its charming gardens and archways adorned with seashells, reminiscent of Pelerinage de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
So beautiful. Worth to be seen. This cathedral has Jesus's head cover cloth when he has been killed
Sanaz N — Google review
A beautiful and inspiring experience. Plan to spend an hour or more slowly exploring this immense building. There are lots of ‘individual chapel’ areas around the inside walls each with a different purpose, story or history. Lots to read and contemplate and maybe reflect upon.
Rich M — Google review
A masterpiece of architecture in Cahors, well worth a brief visit. I walked into a Sunday afternoon service and there would have been live classical concert in the evening hosted at the cathedral for free. The building is situated in the beautiful old town of picturesque Cahors. The ceiling paintings are breathtaking and the many colourful glass windows are wrapping the church's interior into a nice ambiance.

Specialty Museums
The Museum of Agricultural Machinery and Automobile Salviac is a nostalgic trip for those who remember the old Renault's, Citroens, and Peugeot's. The layout and old-fashioned vibe make it a great place to spend an hour or two, with a good collection of old tractors and automobiles. The passionate owner enjoys sharing his collection, even taking kids for rides in the vintage cars.
WOW, if you like old cars, tractors & machinery then this is the place for you. Far more to see than you expect and well worth going out of your way for. One of the best collections we’ve ever seen.
Keith W — Google review
As automobile and technique enthusiast this place hurts your testicles, was expensive and a waste of money. A giant collection of oil leaking ( directly in the soil) rusty, half rotten tractors, cars and motorcycles is what you are looking at. Some are decent, a handful are restored, but most are in deplorable state. This is not a museum, but despite his enthusiasm and passion, this is a collector taking it to the next level of collecting. These vehicles should be preserved. If you have nothing to do, perhaps fun to go, but otherwise please go have a good wine and moules frites. There are better things to do and see in the area! Cash and cheque only, no cards!
Daniel V — Google review
This is an excellent museum. There is something for everyone. It has agricultural machinery, PTT artefacts, lots of cars, lorries, full period roomsets, very many tractors, and a cafe. It is run by a fantastically enthusiastic group of people (led by Benoit) who make you feel very welcome and explain how to view the exhibits really well. The objects are kept in the original condition that they were found (objects are only in original condition once and are better to see like this). Some show their age and patina, but all the engines are maintained in running condition and can be demonstrated. The museum provides an excellent view back in history for people of all ages to enjoy. There are many, many things to see, but also an expansion of the site is being prepared. There is even a guided tour at certain times of the day. Well worth visiting. We will be back there again soon.
Matthew E — Google review
Collecting on steroids! Every kind of farm equipment, 200 tractors, 100 cars, motorcycles, bikes, antique toys, plus he makes a wood fired pizza you can order for after your tour. Amazing collection.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the picturesque Perigord region of southern France, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle is a 13th-century medieval fortress that offers a captivating journey into the art of war during the Middle Ages. Overlooking the Dordogne valley, this historical monument boasts a commanding view and houses an impressive collection of weapons, armor, and reconstructed war machines.
Loved this place! Brought our kids (8 & 10), so cool. Lots of steps up. So much history. Great for medieval buffs. We parked in free lot at bottom of the hill & walked up through the small village surrounding the castle.
Sallie H — Google review
An ABSOLUTELY impressive multi faceted immersive experience!! Not to be missed! The whole castle from room to room offered museum quality examples of weapons armour. A few areas had repeating audiovisual stories about construction of siege equipment, and how to make armour. One area was a theatre. There was a live blacksmith , a person who explained and fired a trebuchet. Another explained weapons use and gave kids some basic sword training using props. Probably the best EVER historic site I’ve been to !! Well worth the money and drive to see!!
Jay F — Google review
Very beautiful castle, especially recommended for a visit with children! In the various exhibition rooms, in addition to the elements on display, there were also small Playmobil exhibitions, so that the children could also enjoy the visit! The castle itself is beautiful, really well preserved and offers phenomenal views of the valley and river in the area. At the end of the visit (small signs help you to navigate everything, even without a guide) you will find a small tower room for children with books about castles, knights and the like, as well as Playmobil toys, where the children can play and read! Really amazing, the kids loved it! The children also loved the costumes that were available in an exhibition room. You could choose something from a range of medieval clothing and then sit on a throne provided and take your photo (free of charge, but you take the photos yourself, of course). A wonderful idea! I would definitely recommend a visit for families, but without a stroller, as you can leave one in a designated area in front of the castle. The only thing I didn't like so much, and that's not the castle's fault, was that in winter only one restaurant was open, the one right next to the castle, and unfortunately they weren't good and a bit expensive for what you get. Otherwise, highly recommended!
India M — Google review
A rewarding view and experience for a slightly hard uphill hike. Can drive up, but part of the experience is the walk up! The restaurants around the top are really terrible so I'd suggest either bringing a picnic or going back down to eat.
Krithika P — Google review
Very nicely renovated castle, put into a very good state. The self walking tour is fun. Amazing views of the river valley as well.
Freek E — Google review
To me, this is a castle and not a chateau. Therefore don't expect fancy furniture and artwork. However, if you like your medieval weapons, then this is a good place to visit.

The Marqueyssac gardens, situated on a hilltop south of La Roque-Gageac, offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Dordogne Valley. The 19th-century gardens feature around 150,000 meticulously hand-pruned boxwoods that form intricate patterns and mazes. Visitors can stroll along the 6-kilometer trails, passing by waterfalls, an aviary, and even peacocks.
A fabulous day out. The topiary is beautiful. We visited on a Sunday, attended the morning yoga session, had a short guided tour, then walked round the extensive gardens before doing the via ferrata. We also had a delicious ice cream at the cafe. Great value for money. All the staff are super friendly and very helpful (Thank you!) Highly recommended!

A magnificent location with wonderful views, an incredible sculpted garden and plenty to explore. We took an afternoon to get our and enjoy some nature after a few days of taking in the well known historical sites in the area. It was a fine weather day, and we very much enjoyed a leisurely afternoon in these grounds. The views are far reaching, the paths calming and very well maintained, and called off with a nice restaurant just above the entrance or, along the patna ways, a creperie. The chateau in the grounds was an unexpected highlight, with some interesting history and several displays about the link between the owner and the illustrator of the Michelin Man. A must see for all
R C — Google review
A wonderful part of the Dordogne. There is plenty of parking and the approach to the manor house gives you an idea of the creativity of the gardeners who shape the box hedges into fantastic arrangements. The walk along the ridge has quite a few pathways and also some fun things for kids. It is a long walk and so many vistas to explore. The restaurant is good but pricey. €6.50 for a finger of lemon juice in a glass and a jug of water. It’s was refreshing though.
G M — Google review
Brilliant gardens. Nice house and wonderful views over the Dordogne River and valley especially from the Belvedere viewpoint. Wonderful sights of wild cyclamen (it was autumn) throughout.
Maureen S — Google review
This was so much fun! Kids loved the adventure of the paths lined with hedges too. Felt like something out of a story book. This was pram accessible the whole way too. Some parts easier than others. We had ice cream and coffee at the tea house and it was delicious.
Ashley P — Google review
Fabulous gardens. Great views of the countryside. Plenty of exercise, bring water bottles. My ten year old daughter loved it, treated it like an adventure to discover hidden areas, and wants to go back next year. Once you've admired the topiary go into the chateau to watch a video about the gardners' work.
Jason K — Google review
Very beautiful, calm place. A bit pricy though - 12,9 per person. But one can spend there couple of hours or more.
Ieva — Google review
We went anticipating a 1-2 hour visit. My partner and children (4 and 8) ended up spending most of the day there while I went to deal with an issue with our car that took much longer than expected. No one complained because there was so much to see and do! The only tips: the rock climbing wall for children is only in the AM, the via ferrata requires fully closed shoes (eg. Not Keens), and children requiring two accompanying adults.

Château de Beynac is a massive medieval fortress situated on a cliff by the riverside in Dordogne. The region offers a blend of rural France's charm, featuring delightful cuisine, fine wine, and a romantic medieval heritage. Visitors can explore scenic rivers, serene valleys, and enchanting forests for a tranquil retreat from modern life.
Great medieval castle with stunning views and no crowds. Fascinating history and well-preserved architecture make it worth visiting. Important tip: Skip the lower parking and go straight to the upper lot (same price). The walk up from below is very steep and challenging - those with mobility issues should definitely use the top parking. The upper lot saves you a difficult climb and gets you right to the entrance. Highly recommend for history lovers looking for an authentic castle experience without the tourist masses.
Angel O — Google review
The video explaining the architecture of Château de Beynac was excellent. The accompanying app provided an audio guide and the narrative about Queen Eleanor and her son, King Henry, enriching the experience. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, offering a unique perspective reminiscent of the monarchy, where you feel as if you’re overlooking the entire land, inspiring a sense of responsibility to protect it. From this vantage point, you can also see the nearby Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle. The entrance fee is quite reasonable, making this visit even more worthwhile. Highly recommend!

Château de Beynac is stunning—basically the Beyoncé of castles. The views will wreck you (in a good way), and the stairs will leave you breathless along with the view. Worth it. Also, the castle was basically for a woman who had two husbands bc she could. Iconic

Grand castle. Need 1 hour to go through it. Asked to download the application as tour guide. Could have provided a pamphlet instead of it. View was stunning and worth a one time visit

The most amazing Château we have been to yet! Well worth the trip, just make sure you park up top and not on river like we did. It's a very steep, but beautiful walk up the path if you want some exercise tho.

One of the most impressive castles in the Périgord. Majestic, its location remains breathtaking and its panorama exceptional. Indeed, this incredible medieval fortress, perched on its golden cliff, overlooks the Dordogne River from over 150 meters above sea level. A true movie set ! A tour of the castle will take you from the 12th-century keep to the majestic Salle des Etats, ending at the top of the Éperon Tower, where you'll overlook the valley just as the Beynac family, to whom the building belonged for nearly 1,000 years, did. From there, the view over the Valley of the Five Castles is superb ! When leaving the castle, we've visit the church, whose stately lodge is open to the public.

What an incredible castle. This ancient castle sits above the Dordogne Valley with an ancient 12th century village on the surrounding hillside. No guides, just enjoy at your own pace. A must see if you are in the area.

Najac Castle is a medieval fortress situated on a hilltop, offering guided tours and breathtaking views from its towers. Perched 150m above the River Aveyron, the castle's slender towers and crenellated ramparts create a fairy tale-like appearance. The village of Najac, with less than 1,000 inhabitants, provides a picturesque backdrop to the imposing structure.
Wonderful place to visit for a weekend 😍 the castle, streets and the forest are really nice. Looks small but you have too many things to do here. I recommend you to visit. I went by bike and it was really nice.

Beautiful town with a castle perched high on an escarpment. Alovely walk from the shop-lined square up to the castle. Climb the circular narrow stairs to the top of the keep for amazing views.

When I was growing up there was a popular saying ‘Bacon and eggs, no thank you I’d rather wash my car’ As I walked around the castle at Najac I recalled this saying and processed to shout ‘I’d rather wash my car’ Surprisingly a man came up to me and said that it was about time

Interesting historical place. Great for a day out with the village next to it.
Thomas L — Google review
This fortress/castle is one of the most impressive ones you will ever see. It's the location that makes it. Sitting on a - at times steep - hill, you can see it from far away. And when you are walking down on the Rue Du Chateau (coming from the village), then it's just a sight to behold. It's picture-perfect. It goes a good way down from the village....until it goes back up again to reach the castle. It's a fairly short walk - a lot shorter than it might seem. If you have a stroller or a wheelchair it's quite an obstacle though. And the steep stairs and the cobble stones can get pretty slippery, even when it's not raining. So be aware of that and be careful. We didn't go inside the castle - we had our Bulldog with. But the best sight of it isn't up-close anyways...it's on Rue Du Chateau when you walk towards it. A wonderful, pretty and magical fortress. A must-see.

Absolutely stunning, great value too. Well worth a visit if you are nearby. Definitely take the time to climb to the top of the tower!

What a great trip! The hike up was not the easiest stroll, however many places to take a breather and see the views. From inside your can climb to the top- the spiral staircase are narrow, but worth the climb. You can see the town of Najac from each level and the secret passway is really fun. A great time!

Pech Merle is a renowned limestone cave complex located in the Cele river valley near Cabrerets village. Discovered by two teenagers in 1922, it features original prehistoric artworks dating back around 29,000 years. Unlike its famous counterpart Lascaux, Pech Merle allows visitors to view authentic paintings and engravings rather than replicas. The cave spans over two kilometers with seven underground galleries to explore.
What an amazing site! I enjoyed this much more than Lascaux 4. Our guide was well informed, patient and helpful. We had more time to enjoy the tour - so very stunning and moving!!! The museum, theater, and cafe were very good too.

Wow superb unique !!! Let's go back in history at least 25,000 years and see first hand primitive art not seen by modern man before 1996. Well preserved, group controlled in limited numbers and a MUST SEE CAVE! afterwards, enjoy the museum and watch more history in the 25 minute film. What a delightful outing...and the route is an eye full too!!

We’re doing the GR65 and stopping in Cabrerets so decided in advance to pop in. The website is a bit of nightmare from outside of France, but worked perfectly once we were in-country. You MUST buy tickets in advance as it sells out. There is an English spoken tour, but if you miss this there is a free audio tour (via app and headphones). The tour itself is very good and the caves are spectacular. Amazing that it was discovered by three teenagers. Well worth the visit and while obviously touristy, it wasn’t horribly so. Staff were pleasant and helpful.

Gilles’ tour of the Pech Merle cave was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. His enthusiasm was contagious, his passion for the place genuine, and the way he guided us made you stop, think, and marvel. Top class, Gilles. Do yourself a favor and visit the cave—step back into the past and dream of cave bears and mammoths. Even better if you go together with Gilles 😉.

Great experience. Underground natural cave dating back to 29,000 years ago. Beautiful and very interesting. Well kept, very clean and safe! The tour guide only spoke French, but English audio guides and guide books are available. There is also a museum which explains all that you'll find inside the cave. Highly recommended visit. Book tickets in advance for no waiting time.

Wow. This place is amazing. It was really the guided tour that made it. There is so much history preserved in this place and so many interesting stories. Don’t trust this hotel. Read all the fine print, and do not expect them to honor anything else, no matter how obvious, not even to respond constructively. If they respond to this note it will be to claim that our purchase was non-refundable, but they will know that they are not telling anything close to the whole truth. There are many other fine places to stay in the area.

Absolutely amazing place. Information provided in French and English. It's really interesting learning about how these people lived 100's of years ago. It's the biggest of its kind in Europe.. The way it was constructed and the defenses were amazing. 100% recommend if you are in the area.

An interesting place to visit. It’s stimulating to imagine people living and working so high up. People lived here from pre-historic times all the way until 1588 when it was destroyed in the religious wars. Great examples of medieval methods of lifting, pulley systems etc. Beautiful views of the river and countryside. There are also ancient dwellings and sometimes re-enactments at ground level. So it’s possible to imagine the whole village with chapel, bakery, forge and stables. The information in English is not good, some parts have no information. There is plenty of parking in the shade. Best to arrive before 11:30 when it gets very busy.

Great place to visit both with kids and without. If you can get, get a guided tour. We didn't and I am sure we would have learned and enjoyed even more if we had someone told us the stories. City in the rock. Medieval city high above the river. Walk along one of the levels and see some winches, tools etc which aren't in the original place but we're recreated up there. There were more levels and stairs connecting them but they aren't open. There is one tiny part about prehistory as medieval humans, living in the same place, wiped out most of the stone/bronze/iron age traces, apart from some bones found buried. There are signs in French and English and the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable.

Lascaux II is a remarkable replica of the famous prehistoric cave paintings found in 1940. Located in the Dordogne region, this site features over 600 wall paintings depicting large animals, human figures, and abstract signs dating back to around 17,000-20,000 years ago. The cave complex includes galleries such as the Hall of the Bulls and the Chamber of Felines.
Well worth a visit, the reconstruction of the cave system is as close as most people will ever get to the real thing. Lots more than just this and some effort as gone into explaining the environment and science behind it all. Children will either love it or get bored after 10 minutes, lots in the shop for them. It's a thinkers place. And the car park is free.
Keith R — Google review
You must visit this place! Truly awesome inspiring to witness this replica of the original cave. Excellent tour in English too. The guides really do inject a sense of wonder into the tour! Highly recommend this place. Photos cannot do it justice.
Drummond S — Google review
Well worth the visit with English spoken tour guide (24 August 1.30pm). The tour was extremely informative and inspiring. We were awestruck by the creativity of early man. We totally understand why there was a re-creation, and this did not detract from the tour.
Paul R — Google review
After consulting the online site, I bought 4 tickets to view Lascaux II Cave exhibit. The online information mentioned the tour was available in 5 different languages, but we were disappointed to find out the tour was only available in French. This diminished our experience considerably. Our tour guide, although was very animated and was very expressive in his presentation making sure to engage the many school aged children in attendance. I would make the effort to see this exhibit again, if we travel to France from Vancouver, Canada. But we would ask to have a way to listen to the presentation in English.
Manfred H — Google review
Very interesting and informative. Our guide explained the history and theory behind the cave drawings, answered all questions with precise answers with some added humor. He also catered his explanations to the children to make sure the understood. Highly recommend.
E&D P — Google review
The Smaller cave made for a more personal Lascaux experience. Our guide was charming and knowledgeable. Perhaps a few less people in the group would mean less “chatter” ! Under 20 persons, might be preferable for all. People with walkers, imbalance and hearing loss are less likely to enjoy the group experience and should be warned!
Gisele M — Google review
Excellent experience! Our English guide was really engaging and very informative.
Janice F — Google review
We were initially unsure about the Lascaux II tour due to some underwhelming reviews mentioning restrictions like no photos and cramped conditions at the entrance and exit of the replica cave. However, we were pleasantly surprised by our experience—it was truly worth it. We joined the English-speaking group led by the excellent guide, Ludivine, who went above and beyond to make the tour memorable. Unlike typical guides who simply recite dates and state ‘dry’ facts, Ludivine engaged us with her improvisation and interactive style. She is a very good storyteller. Even our kids found the tour captivating; it was far from boring and truly entertaining. Leaving the caves, we couldn't stop discussing about our impressions from the tour/ And the facts we learned - first humans in Europe, ochre -manganese paintings, tarpans, lions, aurochs, symbols, fragility of limestone caves, etc. Definitely recommend

The Lascaux International Center of Parietal Art, located in Montignac, is a sleek and modern museum dedicated to the ancient parietal wall paintings found in the famous Lascaux Cave. Visitors are guided through a life-size replica of the cave, where they can marvel at the impressive 20,000-year-old masterpieces adorning the walls. The center also offers insights into anthropology and archaeology.
Absolutely breathtaking. Yes, this cave, Lascaux 4, is a replica of the original. This is due to all the damage the tourism industry caused to the original cave. This replica is incredibly immersive, however. You climb up to the cave, then walk down into it. It is chilly and dark. Guides treat it as if you are in the real caves, and ask visitors to not take photos or touch anything. This is a great way to teach people how to respect real caves in the future so we don't degrade them the way the original Lascaux was. The English guide was passionate and excited about prehistoric art and Lascaux. He brought the cave to life with his voice. When you exit, you enter Lascaux 3 where you are allowed to take pictures to your hearts content. There are also two cinemas. One of them is exclusively in French, however, and it also may give you vertigo. I had to leave just a minute into the showing. Lascaux 2 is up the hill from here, but I don't think it is necessary, as it is an even more incomplete replica than Lascaux 4 or 3. It would be best to plan to spend 4 hours here.
Ali P — Google review
Just an amazing experience. It really feels like you're in the cave, and yet at the same time I am so glad that they have sealed off the real cave to preserve it. Our guide was very informative, and the design of the museum surrounding the cave is stunning and takes incredible advantage of the natural setting.
Terence G — Google review
It's a shame we can't go to the original cave, as it needs to be preserved against humidity. However the Lascaux IV cave is an exact copy of the original. The whole setup of the complex is amazing with excellent descriptions and information about the cave and its drawings. The only downside is the carpark is a fair distance away from the complex.
Adie K — Google review
Impressive Museum In order to preserve the original cave, the French government approved 40 or 50 years ago to seal the real cave and do other caves that are re-enactment of the original. This strategy is a must in order to preserve this historical treasure. The site you visit is actually really good and literally a perfect copy. It is well worth it and is very informative, both explaining the discovery of the site and the creation of it. It is one of the best 3 palaeontological sites in Europe. Obviously super worth it!
Paul V — Google review
Fantastic experience - the reproduction of the cave is very good and accessible for all. Our English guided tour by Celia was excellent and well paced. The museum was very informative with good use of technology to bring the cave and its history to life.

It's a nice place to visit, many birds like vultures, eagles, owls and a nice collection of parrots. The show itself is wonderful. Having said this all. It's a pity the French don't give shows in English. The staff is pretty good in English but the show itself is in French. I see this as contempt for non-French speaking tourists which were when I was there at least 40 percent if us.

absolutely recommend going to the bird show. Not in english but still an incredible show. Only downside felt some of the birds didn’t look too happy. Still would recommend to any one to visit.

Brilliant way to spend an afternoon watching Birds of Prey fly off into the sky, enjoy themselves for 20-30minutes then come back to handlers who were performing with other birds. For the kids they had Condors walk over their legs, fed parrots and kestrel, had owl on head and handled a little owl. Some got to be part of the demonstration feeding flying birds. Took up 3 hours easily for €11 each, drinks over the same time span would have been far more expensive. Go!

This takes you back in time. We were very lucky as we visited late in the evening (7pm) so had the place to ourselves. It closes at 9pm. We were told that it is crazy busy in daytime so best to avoid if possible. Amazing buildings in an amazing spot.

This place has his own aura. It's impressive when you look up and see the castle on the top of the "hill". And when you take a look to the overall, it seems like a place took from a fairy tale. It has an elevator to move to the top or the bottom, but it cost around 4€. Even so, I recommend walking to discover all the smalls secrets hidden in this place

I'm Catholic priest so I put attention to the quietness and peacefulness of particular place of prayer. I can say that the calmness and quietness of this place estonished me. Of course I'm not talking about "upper" church but about chapel underneath the place of tourists. I highly recommend this place for everyone who is seeking for the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother Immaculate Mary. God bless everyone+

Monkey Forest is a popular destination in the Lot department, attracting numerous visitors. It's home to around 150 Barbary macaques living freely in a forest setting. The site offers an opportunity to observe these endangered monkeys up close and learn about their social behavior and evolution through informative panels, video documentaries, and knowledgeable volunteers. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along a 1.3 km path for approximately 1.5 hours to watch the monkeys roam freely in conditions resembling their natural habitat.
Not sure what everyone else was talking about regarding steepness and roughness of terrain, maybe they've adjusted the paths since then? All signage in French and English, talks in English upon request, all the staff spoke both French and English. We drove an hour and it was worth every moment! Took about an hour to walk through the park, never knew when you'd come across a monkey around the bend. Thoroughly enjoyable and informative. Highly recommend.

Amazing experience! All the staff I spoke to spoke good English and were very friendly. The route was very informative, with signs displaying the monkey’s social structure, diet, and ecosystem. The monkeys, of North African origin have plenty of space, and you can really get up close to them as they roam freely across the paths. The information office also has useful leaflets for other attractions in the area. The fairly well priced entry allows you to stay for as long as you like, however a family group price would have been nice.

Lovely place, knowledgeable staff. Monkeys free roaming, mid way round are some breathtaking views of the Dordogne. Definitely worth a visit, I will definitely return when I'm back down that part of the world 🌎

The Monkey Forest is very cool and has beautiful views of Rocamadour, but we had a frustrating experience that I think could be helpful for others to know about when planning a trip there. On the weekend the park is open is the mornings from 10-12. We arrived with our 2.5 year old at 11 and after walking in we were told we needed to hurry to make it through the 1km path before 12. We were not worried, everyone was walking just fine. By 11:30 the park employees started following us down the path telling us to hurry up. Clearly more concerned about missing a minute of lunch than visitors having a nice experience. At that point we were only 10 minute walk from our car and we told them we were not worried about making it out by 12. But they insisted that we were being very slow and they kept pestering us and making our time less than fun and rushing along our toddler when he was just starting to really enjoy watching the monkeys. I wanted a refund after this experience but the office was closed by 11:45 when we make it back to the parking lot with 15 minutes to spare. I really wish they had told us that they expect you to run as fast as you can through the park and that you will be harassed if your not out by 11:30 (eventhough they close for lunch 12-1 officially). Instead of sympathy when we expressed exasperation for the 3 employee flanking and berating) we received sarcasm and criticism. Not a very nice was to treat your guests monkey forest, I hope you will try to do better in the future and that others are aware that they should arrive at 10 for the morning walk if you don’t want to get this kind of treatment.

The Gouffre de Padirac, discovered in 1889, is a spectacular cave network featuring some of France's most magnificent underground caverns. Visitors can explore the navigable river located 103 meters below ground level, accessed through a 75-meter-deep and 33-meter-wide chasm.
With a recommendation from family, we couldn't turn this one down..tickets booked in advance (a must) we arrived on our motorbike (parking available for bikes was great) Make sure you pay a visit (toilet) before embarking on an amazing journey. Audio headphones are supplied and are automatic with a voice you can listen to. Stairs and lift available (your choice) We had an amazing time and not once was it claustrophobic! Enjoy if you are in the area.
Jo C — Google review
Simply fantastic! Easy to park (no charge), very easy to purchase tickets at a machine, queue short and undercover, audio guide straightforward and lifts if you want them. And as for the cave network - just amazing. You see so much and then into the boats - very atmospheric and onto yet more stunning sights. You will not be disappointed! We visited mid-September and no need to book ahead but certainly would for July and August. Highly recommend!
Suzanne P — Google review
Great experience. Very well organised and very informative. Lots of steps but there is the option of a lift. Boat ride along the underground stream is great. Wear a raincoat as there is some dripping water although a lot of effort has been made to minimise this.
Trehane J — Google review
Had been waiting to go here for a while and so glad I did. It's a bit of a windy drive to get there, and parking is pretty chaotic, but it's definitely worth the effort. A whole underground world awaits you: A giant chasm; a lovely boat trip along a subterranean river; waterfalls, lakes, enormous stalactites; and a section that opens up to reveal a chamber with a 90m high ceiling. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the infrastructure is exceptional there. Tips: Book tickets in advance. We went on a cold, rainy day in October and were surprised to see how busy it was. Parking is free, but a bit of a hunt was necessary. It's a steady 13 degrees in there, so warm, waterproof clothing & shoes required. Also, use the toilets before you enter as there are none in there! Have fun!
M A — Google review
Simply magnificent. The caves are very beautiful with many fantastic photo opportunities. Buy your tickets in advance so that you won't be disappointed. Free parking is available but limited but the paid parking lot is inexpensive.

An absolute must-visit attraction if you are in the Dordogne region. It was an hour and a half of pure fun and adventure that was well worth the price. The way this attraction is structured is very well-organized and I appreciate how accessible it is for all kinds of people. The cave formations are stunning and grand and must be seen to believe. I was not expecting the sheer scale of this cave and was blown away. Furthermore, the staff were great and my boat guide in particular was very friendly and willing to answer any questions I had about the cave. Highly, highly recommend visiting this place.
Jessica — Google review
Incredible. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit particularly the boat ride even deeper into the cave. This place is vast and totally mind blowing!!! A lot of steps (but there is a lift if you need it).
Janice F — Google review
Fantastic place to visit and see ancient history/geography in a brilliant setting.. lifts and stairs to lower caves but don't get stuck behind people who are incapacitated and should be using the lift other wise add another ½hour or more onto your journey.. staff very friendly and have the organizing down to a T..

It's a wonderful trip out. We went out of high season, early October so had missed the really full bloom in the flower gardens but the roses were still magnificent. The 5 themed gardens were a joy. Lots of games for kids of all ages, dominoes, croquet, hool a hoop, skipping, giant twister etc etc. Lots of fun was had in the labyrinth, solving clues to escape. The cafe had a good selection of drinks etc. Excellent visit.

Worth seeing, the gardens, the giant maze, the coffee shop and souvenirs shop. Colette was an extraordinary woman, artist and French figure of her era. The 2019 movie traces her story and this Garden and Maze will be a great discovery if you are into literature or just willing to learn more about Colette and life in her time. The Maze was great fun, we did it during the summer and it was tricky to get out. A super fun moment also the giant games in the garden!!! Let's be kids again!

We had a lovely few hours here with our children (5 and 8). The maze is lots of fun. The gardens are beautiful and there are lots of shady and rest areas as you go round on a hot day like today. Guides in English and French. We'll definitely go back
Golding M — Google review
An excellent venue for all the family to enjoy. Flowers and shrubs are clearly labelled and reflect the various locations where she lived. The impact of the site obviously varies according to the season. Lots of play areas for the children and a good cafe with friendly staff.
Michael F — Google review
As a huge Collette fan who has never read any of her work, and if I'm honest had no idea who she was before I came here, coming to this garden was a great way to get to know my mysterious literary hero. She had a Dog, (I'm also a huge fan of the dog, and have also never read it's work, or smelled it's pee) she loved goats... She may have spent some time in Morocco? She um... Did Lazer style obstacle courses and I think was crazy into Jenga. Perhaps her books will reveal more. Perhaps if I learn french I will finally understand what it is to mix the masculine with a soft feminine touch of glamour. Perhaps I can be worthy of a dog's love. Time is an illusion in the garden. The crepes were nice and there was enough weird stuff in the gift shop to keep my seven year old happy. For a fleeting moment. ENJOY!

(Translated by Google) The team and the welcome are excellent. However, the via ferrata is poorly marked, it's not very well signposted, the signs are unclear or non-existent, some of the wooden steps leading up to it are coming loose (I think it's the town hall's fault that they're not taking good care of the site), and it would have been nice if we'd been advised to wear gloves when rappelling up a metal cable! Otherwise, the canoe trip was excellent.

(Translated by Google) Discover the Dordogne via ferrata for about 3 hours, with 5 different routes, rope bridges, Tibetan bridges... 3 levels of difficulty, for all abilities! (Be careful, the last route requires prior experience with via ferrata or climbing, according to our tastes). However, we found the safety to be minimal. You're briefed via a video without sound at reception, and they let you go without giving you any further details. There's no phone number in case of a problem... It's lucky we'd already done via ferrata before, because we weren't asked. So yes, it's just equipment rental, with complete autonomy, but safety shouldn't be overlooked. We still had a great time, and the value for money is unbeatable. We recommend it!

Tours de Merle is a captivating destination that showcases the remnants of a historic fortress perched on a rocky outcrop, beautifully framed by the meandering River Maronne. Once an essential stronghold during the reign of Henry II Plantagenet, it served as a crucial frontier between Aquitaine and neighboring earldoms. Today, this picturesque ruin invites visitors for an afternoon adventure filled with exploration. The site boasts well-preserved towers and impressive crumbling structures that tell tales of yesteryears.
Wear suitable footwear, and be prepared for lots of steps! The views are stunning and the history fantastic. If you bring a picnic - you can hang around for one of the 3 'theatre shows' that are on each day.
Susie H — Google review
Even though I had read reviews before we went, I was amazed at the level of access to the towers and grounds. It rained a bit while we did our tour, but if anything, it added to our experience. There were very little people touring, which gave the impression that we had the place to ourselves. An amazing and well kept site.

For the English 😂: Brilliant lake and forest with a great path to go round with family, friends, pets or on your own. The only thing is it can be a bit muddy and there aren't fences all around so be careful. Definitely recommend if you're nearby 👍

This lake and forest are full of green and peaceful. There’s also a wonderful path to walk around. Overall, it was a great experience.

Beautiful spot for walks and cycling. On side is easy and dry, the other path more muddy and wet with roots and stones making the walk uneasy. Put some good shoes on.

Must-visit lake in Auvergne! It’s a volcanic lake, and walking around it takes less than an hour with beautiful views all the way. We did the loop with our dog, absolutely lovely!

Beautiful, even on a grey day. Various hiking options to lengthen your route. Roadside parking. Check café opening hours.

About an hour’s walk around this beautiful lake, a former volcano (which actually is two lakes superimposed). Track mostly flat and easy to do in sneakers. Great views to lake along the way. Access and car parking close to start point. Public toilets available - clean at the time we were there.

If you are a nature lover and you like to spend your time amidst water, trees and rock, then there is no better place. All around the lake, there is a place for a stroll but is hardly visible to the naked eyes. This is a picturesque location for any photography lover. Boating is also available for a nominal cost. Only setback is the unavailability of a shelter in case of an unprecedented downpour or a kids play area, so, plan accordingly.

Great place to walk and admire the landscape! The walk is easy, and it takes about 1h walk to walk around it. For your information it was a volcano before and the lake is very deep ±100m! You can't swim in it
