Fonts de l'Algar is a charming nature reserve located just 3km from the center of Callosa den Sarria. It boasts a picturesque river route with waterfalls and springs emerging from the mountains. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk, swim in natural pools, and relax in the picnic area. The entry fee is reasonable and well worth it for the stunning views and clear blue waterfalls.
Absolutely beautiful! Swimming shoes/crocs are a must. Plenty of parking on the roads surrounding the waterfalls. We got sucked into the very first one we saw charging more so we carried on up the hill and there’s a great one at the top for €3 with a bar and picnic area. My youngest loved the jump off platform and diving into the different pools situated down the beautiful mountain. We spent roughly 3 hours there and that was plenty of time to enjoy it all. Very busy at time changeover but soon calmed down.

We bought the tickets online in advance. We went early in the morning at 9. At that time, there were still very few people, so we had the waterfall all to ourselves. As we were leaving, more people were just arriving. It was a truly wonderful experience, the water was a pleasant 18 degrees. By the waterfalls, there is also a restaurant for refreshments and water. We definitely recommend visiting this beautiful place. 🌊🩵

Even visiting here October 1st. The weather was amazing, this place is beautiful, absolutely breathtaking. I highly recommend this place to familys, couples.. you will not be disappointed. The water is lovely and fresh and there are deep pools where you can dive down, even Opening Your eyes under the water is not a problem here. You will not be disappointed! There are multiple car parks approaching the vicinity. There are also restaurants on site with their own car park which will allow you to leave your car there whilst visiting the waterfalls if you are a customer. Other surrounding car parks approaching the waterfall are around $5, but you'll be walking for about 3 to 5 minutes. Worth it !
Aaron W — Google review
Excellent place to visit. Free parking at the tourist building. €8 entry. Take your swimwear & waterproof shoes. You'll not regret it. It did start to get busy around lunchtime. There is a restaurant at the entrance.
Kev D — Google review
A wonderful and peaceful spot to enjoy nature! Visiting Fonts d’Alger in November was a highlight, quiet, tranquil, and with hardly anyone else around, it was perfect for wandering along the scenic waterfalls and getting into the water. Being able to stand under the falls in such a natural setting was amazing. Nearby parking was just €5 for the day, €6 per adult entrance fee, with toilets and plenty of picnic spots, so we could relax and enjoy our own lunch in the fresh air. All the paths and facilities were clean and well-maintained. Highly recommended for a relaxing day out!
Vince D — Google review
Beautiful place. if you go upstream it's very similar to the game "call of the jungle" with incredible adventures. I highly recommend it. / Parking around there 5-6 EUR, entrance 8 EUR for adult.
Vitaly S — Google review
This is a lovely cheap day out. Lots of lovely natural pools to swim in and stunning waterfalls. You have to park about a 10 minute walk away and it's a bit of an incline so not great for disabled or older folk who aren't fit. There are lots of steps when you are there too so do bear that in mind.
Dawn A — Google review
Parking situation is horrible but there’s a lot down the street for 5 euro and then a short uphill walk to the park. If you are getting something at the restaurant, free parking included. The falls are a must see! Wear a bathing suit and bring a towel and change of clothes… jump in the water, it’s lovely!

Valor Chocolate Museum

Museum
The Valor Chocolate Museum in Villajoyosa is a must-visit for chocolate lovers. This unique museum offers multimedia displays that cover the history of cocoa cultivation and the chocolate-making process, from bean to bar. Visitors can explore the tasting room and sample a wide range of chocolates, as well as visit the on-site chocolate shop. The museum, which is part of the Valor factory, provides an opportunity to learn about the entire chocolate production process.
Really nice factory and museum visit/experience that is free and available in English or Spanish. The tour guide was knowledgeable and very kind. Lots of interesting original machines and historical artifacts related to the history of the company.
Lisa A — Google review
What an amazing way to keep such a family story going for many many years, a free guided tour demonstrates the passion about chocolate and the commitment to the business, the tour was very well organized, the guide is very knowledgable and nothings better than ending the tour by a chocolate tasting session.
Rony G — Google review
An amazing experience! Free entry, it’s a guided tour every hour (you can get a ticket on arrival and maximum for 50 people/hour). You can also book online and you get priority access. The museum is really well done: the history of this family and 5 generations business! Impressive… the chocolate is very good, you can test different ones at the end of the tour and highly recommended to stock yourself with a few bars 🤪😁🤭
David K — Google review
It's a nice tour with a small museum. You don't get to see much of the factory floor, but the guide was pleasant. The gift shop has some samples, though not every flavor they offer. Prices were a little high, but not insane.
Chris B — Google review
It was an interesting place to visit and great that it was free. The guide spoke very quickly and seemed fairly disinterested in the job. We were just another tour group... which we were! You get to see the factory from a viewing platform, which was cool, however they were cleaning up when we were there so not too much to see. I was on the English speaking tour (there are two a day, 10am and 4pm) and weirdly there were quite a number of Spanish on it too. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Villajoyosa but book online so you ensure you get a space. Capacity is 50 and my tour was full. Ooh, and you do get a little tasting at the end (don't be at the back of the line though, it goes quickly)!
Sally T — Google review
It's good fun. The smell there is incredibly good. You can get online ticket (6h before or up to 30 people) and printed tickets in person (30 min before the event and up to 20 people). Getting golden tickets could be a bit chaotic and difficult. It's a short visit where a very friendly guide explains the origin of Willy Valor and the Chocolate factory. It ends with a quick view from a window of the packaging area of the factory, and some sampling at the shop. Don't expect to see the magic of Willy Valor nor Ompa Loompas.
Javier M — Google review
What a lovely trip around the chocolate museum and factory. Coming from Bournville, the home of Cadbury chocolate, it was so nice to see the similarities of how they developed. Very big on family Valor is now 6th generation and still family owned. Sadly Cadbury didn't maintain that. The guide was very good and was happy to answer additional questions. What a charming hour spent here.
Steven C — Google review
Great free tour with a little tasting in the end.The cocholates are very tasty especially dark one with almonds.Tour lasts about 45min,you have to book in advance,if you don't canacel on time you are charged 5 eur per person.Tours in English are at 10am and 4pm. Usually these types of tours are being charged so this is great opportunity to finde out about the history of the chocolate making and tradition of Valor family.

It was a great little trip, boat ride over there. I expected an island with little on there, however, got there to find one half had a few houses Inc little boutique shop and some cafes and restaurants. The other half was the military side, which had interesting facts and ruins from way back, lovely cliff walking and beautiful stoney beaches. We spent approx 3 hours there, took a picnic, bin are there to dispose of rubbish, and a loo opposite the beach, you could definatly spend longer by going swimming etc, overall a wonderful day out.
Shelley M — Google review
Super nice island to spend the day, it definitely gets very packed in the main bay. It’s nice to have a stroll around and they have a few stores. I would not recommend using the bathrooms there though not clean at all.
Aki — Google review
Beautiful island, nice few hours spent on there. Few little shops and food places. Walked around the island. Only need a few hours there, but well worth it. Stunning views
Kimberley R — Google review
Nice place to visit. On my perspective, not to stay overnight unless you have special activities to engage - the tourist tour can be covered in one day. No sandy beaches, round stone mainly. However, the water is clean, warm, and transparent. Bar / Restaurant offer is OK. Prices seemed a bit high. A small but nice art gallery may grab the visitor's attention.
Pedro S — Google review
A great day out, very clear and warm waters with a variety of swimming spots, great for snorkeling. Stayed on the main beach and felt safe leaving our bags (with non-valuable items), after seeing others do the same, while we explored the different swimming spots on the island
Diogo O — Google review
Visiting Tabarca Island felt like finding a secret Mediterranean world. Only a few dozen residents live here, yet the seafood restaurants are incredible — fresh fish grilled by the sea, chilled white wine, and calm ocean breeze. It’s peaceful, photogenic, and perfect for anyone who wants real island life without the crowds. I’d come back just for the food and silence. 🌊✨
Silver G — Google review
Such a beautiful island near our house. We rode a big boat from Santa Pola that costs us 10€ back and forth. There's a line of ticket booths in the port. They will give you a brochure to show the boat return times. It was a nice 25-minute ride. It can be super hot so don't forget to bring sun creams, hats and umbrella. We went around the island to see spots with few people because the main beach is packed. We ate at a nice restaurant with menu starting €18. Though we end up paying more than €100 for 4 persons. Costly like other islands. We didn't have a reservation but I suggest to have one as it can be full especially on weekends. There are small bars and restaurants and few stores for clothes and souvenirs. There's also an atm near the La Pecera. Also bring aqua shoes. Some beaches have stones and slippery. We will definitely go back.

Ascensor del Castillo de Santa Bárbara

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
The Ascensor del Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante is a fantastic way to reach the historic fortress without the strenuous climb. This smooth and quick elevator ride transports visitors directly to the summit of Mount Benacantil, where they are greeted with stunning panoramic views of Alicante's cityscape, coastline, and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. The experience is not only scenic but also budget-friendly, as accessing both the castle and elevator is free.
A great trip to the top of the castle, with the most amazing views. Cafe and toilets. You may have to queue for the lift up to castle, but it’s well worth the wait. Price for entry was €2.70 ish, but we got in free as ‘seniors’!! There seemed to be less queues to go down in the lift at the Castle level, as I think most people took a toilet break (level 2) so queues were longer there.
Sheila W — Google review
Absolutely brilliant place to spend a couple of hours. It's free to access but if you want to use the lift it cost €2.70 (can only pay by card). A few refreshment areas within the castle selling drinks and ice cream. Well worth a visit!
James H — Google review
You have the option to go up the castle via the side walk (not very hard but neither easy) or take the lift (you need a ticket). If you go up via the park you can go down without the need to buying a ticket - pretty convenient. The lift is the best option for a hot or rainy day, or with limited mobility.
David K — Google review
When visiting Alicante, it is essential to set aside half a day to explore this castle, and all its history, which is rich and varied. You will have the opportunity for an incredibly beautiful view of the city and the sea. We recommend from the bottom of our hearts.
Bogdan L — Google review
When I visited Alicante, I’m so glad I took the time to explore this castle, it was honestly one of the highlights of my trip. The history is so rich and interesting, and walking through the different areas really makes you feel connected to the past. The views from the top are absolutely stunning; seeing the whole city and the sea from up there felt amazing. I truly recommend setting aside at least half a day for it. From my heart, this is a place you don’t want to miss.
Melek M — Google review
The elevator up to Castille de Santa Barbara is access from the beach side. Cross the road towards the castle and you will see the entrance. The cost of the elevator is only a few euros per person well worth the spend. Take the elevator up, then do yourself a favor, and walk down through the tiny Pueblo (village) Barrio de Santa Cruz.
Sean R — Google review
Fantastic views across the city of Alicante. Get there just before sunset to watch it setting in the West. We visited for a Wine tasting session in the evening, very popular so need to book well in advance.
Cliff B — Google review
The view is nice. There’s an elevator from the beach side — the ride costs €2.70.

The Archaeological Museum of Alicante, housed in the old San Juan de Dios Hospital, is a cultural gem showcasing over 80,000 artifacts that vividly depict the diverse civilizations that have influenced the region. The museum offers a blend of permanent and temporary exhibitions focusing on field, urban, and underwater archaeology. What sets this museum apart is its modern approach to presenting archaeological findings using cutting-edge technology. It's not just about traditional showcases; there are interactive activities and videos explaining archaeological methods.
Absolutely amazing medium sized museum, with lot of interactive screens and a lot of prehistoric and Iberic and Roman period of the region. The only fault is that half of the museum explanations isn't translated in English.
Jelena P — Google review
Although we have been here many times we try to visit whenever they have a special exhibition on. These vary through the year and are exceptional. The permanent exhibits are great too so if its a girstbtime or a second visit I would highly recommend it.
Mark H — Google review
Very well organized museum, the permanent area is showing the old Hispanic and Mediterranean history, plus a multitude of objects found around Alicante. Interesting and a good stop to enjoy.
David K — Google review
It is well organised and informative place. Staff very friendly and helpful. Tickets are not expensive. Few minus was English was lacking in some areas especialy where you could press on screens. Several areas were made accessible to the blind people, but again this was only in a few places not throughout the museum which it would great idea to keep for those people. There is nice coffee shop with seats. So if you don't like visit museum you can enjoy cup of coffee or fresh orange juice in a shade under big autralians huge trees. Solution for everyone

We had a wonderful visit to MARQ in Alicante yesterday. The building is beautiful, and the park in front is lovely. We attended a candlelight concert and truly enjoyed every moment – such a magical experience!
Michaela V — Google review
The full size dioramas of archeological digs on land and sea were impressive. The normal side of the museum was well laid out and had interesting exhibits. The interactive displays had text in different languages, including English. The ticket office wasn't in the most obvious place and the signs were misleading. It is the building on the right and the automatic door entrance is round the corner, not visible from the main gate.
Alan H — Google review
Yet another visit to this incredible museum which has won awards for its forward thinking and versatile exhibitions. This time we went in March 2025 and the exhibition including information about Hannibal crossing the Alps. Fascinating to see the coins of 218 BC one showing an elephant! This museum never disappoints. What an incredible experience today as the Terracotta Warriors exhibition draws to an end. The staff were helpful and couldn’t have been more friendly. A striking and memorable day.
M J — Google review
The expositions are interesting and the entry fee is very affordable. What I was missing is a description in English at the exhibit - it is Spanish and French. In theory one can try to use the web page but this is neither practical nor fast or convenient. If you can accept that you mostly see the exhibits for the deer of like 4-5 Euro per adult then it is worth seeing if you have time free in Alicante.

It's a great little beach, shallow so great for kids. Bars and Restaurants. Not a private beach usually busy in summer. Super for locals who live close bye.

Beach inside the harbour. A little bit of rubbish floating in the sea. Nice bars with good access to the beach. Plenty of space. Very calm for kids to swim.

Very nice beach but quite shallow. Water feels a bit warmer so maybe better at start and end of season.

Lovely sandy beach and clear shallow waters. A good choice of restaurants from traditional Spanish to Italian and Greek along the shore. In the summer months, there are a couple of ice cream huts where you can also rent sunbeds and parasols for the day. There is a paddle boarding and kayak hire place on the beach. It is a great place for families to enjoy.

This is a lovely beach ⛱️🏖️ with plenty of choice of restaurants and bars. Swimming is not encouraged as there are no emergency services. The sea is very shallow and no tides as it's partly enclosed. Very busy in the summer.

So beautiful! It was á really hot day and we could get in shaddow if we wanted to. A lot of plants, treas, statues and fountains to look at. We also enjoyed seeing the peacocks.

The hotel was chosen for its close proximity to the Teatro and the rooms set amidst a beautiful garden. We booked a Junior Suite which was a lovely stroll amongst the greenery. Extremely clean big bedroom with big bed, big tv and a big spa bath in the big bathroom. All staff were happy and helpful and cheerful. Breakfast was very good. Plenty for 4 courses if you're that way inclined! We didn't use the restaurant as we ate out but the bar and bar staff were good too. Excellent (yes) 'big' pool area adorned with lovely twinkling lights for the evening.
June M — Google review
What a beautiful botanic garden set in the middle of Elche. All the specimen plants and trees were very well labelled. Admission is about 5 euros with a slight discount for pensioners. The only negative is the availability of parking resulting in circling the narrow streets of Elche several times. There is a large underground parking about 300 mtrs away but there is a hotel with the same name much closer that would b much closer

Tranquil, picturesque place with lots of palms from around the world, quite a variety of cacti, peacocks walking around, water features. All creates an atmosphere of joy, peace and tranquility. We love feeding peacocks as there is a special food available to buy next to the exit.

Perched on a hill, Castell de Xàtiva boasts a rich history dating back to Roman, Islamic, and Christian eras. The castle offers breathtaking panoramic views and is well worth the visit. Accessible by foot or bus, the site features archaeological remains and well-marked attractions. The town's tranquility adds to its charm, while ticket prices are reasonable. Hiking up the old route provides an enriching experience with various historical landmarks along the way.
Nestled atop a strategic hill overlooking the charming city of Xàtiva, the Castell de Xàtiva stands as a majestic testament to centuries of history, a fact repeatedly lauded by visitors in their reviews. The sheer historical significance of this site, having witnessed the passage of Roman, Islamic, and Christian civilizations, deeply resonates with those who explore its ancient walls. Many reviewers enthusiastically point out the breathtaking panoramic vistas that unfold from the castle ramparts, offering sweeping views of the sprawling urban landscape below and the picturesque surrounding countryside. This visual reward is frequently cited as more than compensating for the journey to the summit, whether undertaken by car, the convenient tourist train, or even a more challenging but rewarding walk through the historic pathways. The general consensus is that the modest entrance fee represents excellent value for the rich historical and visual experience on offer. Visitors consistently praise the well-maintained state of the castle and the informative signage provided in multiple languages, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the site's multifaceted past. The distinct character of the castle's two main sections, the older Castell Menor and the later Castell Major, provides a diverse exploration experience, each offering unique perspectives and architectural nuances. Several reviewers specifically mention the enchanting sight of the castle illuminated against the night sky, adding another layer of allure to this historical gem. The ascent from the town itself is often described as an interesting prelude to the main attraction, with opportunities to observe the remnants of old churches and other historical structures along the way. The castle's intriguing history as a former prison, coupled with its connections to prominent historical figures such as the infamous Borgia family, further enriches the visitor experience. Adding to the convenience and enjoyment, the presence of a cafeteria at the castle allows visitors to relax and savor refreshments while soaking in the stunning scenery. While some reviews mention the limited parking at the summit and the uphill walk as potential considerations, the overwhelming sentiment remains that the Castell de Xàtiva is an unmissable destination, offering a captivating blend of history, breathtaking views, and a tangible connection to the past.

Must visit place. One of the most stunning castles. The parking on the top is about 20-30 spots and half empty at Friday 1pm. Plan at least 1 hour.

The castle of Xàtiva is a beautiful castle, situated on a steep ridge above the town. Take the car or a bus, it is quite a steep climb! The castle has a few small exhibits, set up beautifully and with care. The smaller part of the castle to the left has some beautiful views and the walls are mostly intact. The larger part is a bit of a walk, but has a moorish fountain, some moorish Brick work and the remnants of a large castle. It also has a commanding view of the surroundings. Definitely worth a visit!

Caught the train from Valencia, about an hour and then we took the direct route as per Apple Maps rather than the Longer easier route on google maps. Not too bad a climb although some of the steps are quite high. There are drinks machines just inside the castle gate and you can refill with water at nearby drinking fountain. The castle itself is very cool, would have been a bit easier to navigate the displays inside the castle if there had been more English but we managed. Fantastic views across the valley from the top and we took some great photos of the castle itself. Took the slow windy way down and had lunch in town before getting the train back to Valencia. Very pleasant day out.

The best place to hang out with family and return to medieval times and history. Expect a minimum of 2 hours. Don't forget to take a map at the ticket desk and water. The temperature inside the castle is much higher than outside because of the walls. The outstanding view of the town - looks like a mosaic.

Travelled from Valencia by train to Xativa, once your at station you can walk 40 mins to castle or take taxi for 10 euros. The castle it self very beautiful and it is a must visit. Stunning views and so much history

Always memorable with new discoveries. This was my 5th visit. This place never loses it’s Wow factor for me. I always take family and friends to explore the castle and local environs. None of my visitors have been disappointed and my two young nieces 8 and 5 were absolutely enthralled. It is all uphill but worth the energy to get to the top. Best to get a taxi in Xativa to the drop off point, explore then walk down. Not for the feint hearted… Spectacular vistas, many viewing points. It has never felt crowded… In Summary Xàtiva Castle is a visually dominant testament to Mediterranean history—a blend of ancient origins, medieval sieges, royal politics, and military ambition—wrapped in scenic beauty. Visiting it offers an immersive journey through millennia of Iberian identity and power. Architecture & Features • Castell Menor: • Built atop Iberian/Roman foundations; includes Hannibal’s Gate, Moorish-era cisterns, Gothic arches, and ruins like Queen Himilce’s viewpoint . • Castell Major: • Dominant medieval fort with massive walls, multiple gates such as Porta Ferrissa and Porta dels Socors, a Gothic chapel (Santa María) from 1431, and historic prison cells for such figures as Jaume d’Urgell and Borgia nobles. Why It Matters • Strategic & cultural crossroads: From antiquity through the medieval and early modern eras, it witnessed struggles across multiple civilisations. • Links to major events: From Hannibal’s legendary campaigns to the Moorish-to-Christian transition and the tumult of the Spanish Succession. • Architectural tapestry: A layered site featuring Iberian, Roman, Moorish, Gothic, and 20th‑century neo‑Gothic elements .

Covetes dels Moros

Historical landmark
Nature & Parks
Cliff face carved with ancient rectangular windows & chambers thought to be Berber warehouses.
Brilliant and unusual fun. Around 50 windows cut straight into the rock face which were used for centuries as stores or tombs, but more recently have joined together as a kind of 3D labyrinth. You have to haul yourself through holes in the walls, floor and ceiling to explore and find your way out. The steps are narrow metal grates leading to the first window so you need a head for heights, and the journey through the caves is quite narrow and physical so you need a reasonable level of strength and fitness. You have to leave bags and coats at the start; you'll need both hands and practical clothes and shoes. You will get a bit dusty. We saw a couple of small (7-8 years) children - they needed a leg up through the ceiling holes but were fine otherwise.

No signs,no roads. We spent more than half an hour inside and around the village and couldn't find a trace. Google location is wrong. Takes you to a dead-end road, and the Tripomatic location takes you in an area of summer houses. We gave up. One of the most visitor's unfriendly places.

A very different and exhilarating historical tourist attraction! The interior of the caves is a bit of an assault course.

Shrine of Saint Mary Magdalene

Mentioned on

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
Santuari de Santa Maria Magdalena is a remarkable sanctuary located in the town of Novelda, just a short ride from Alicante. The church is a popular stop on the Camino de Santiago route and is known for its stunning architecture, reminiscent of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. The intricate stone work and beautiful spires make it a must-see for architecture enthusiasts.
Very interesting architecture, almost a mini Sagrada Familia. After visiting the church, it's possible to take a hiking tour in the area. Be aware of the elevation gain, though.
Yuhuan X — Google review
The church stands on a hill overlooking the town of Novelda and with Castillo de la Mola next to it. The church is very unusual and influenced by Gaudi's style and a real architectural gem. Built between 1920 and 1946 the interior is nothing out of the ordinary but the decorated outside, the slender bell towers and the rustic style make it well worth a visit. There is plenty of parking about two thirds of the way up the hill and a lovely cafe in between the church and the castle.
Marcus H — Google review
A fascinating small church just outside Novelda, close to Alicante. It’s worth a visit of around 90 minutes which includes the Mola Castle alongside the church. No entry fee but you are welcome to make a donation. My review will soon be on my Two Passports Packed travel blog which can be found through a Google search.

Looks amazing from the outside but it was light, bright and fairly modern on the inside. Spectacular views in the surrounding grounds with a cafe to get light refreshments or a restaurant for a meal. It really was the alround experience.
Mo F — Google review
A short one way climb with the asphalt road to the free parking lot next to the church. Very nice place on the hill with a great view of the surrounding area. In the area there is a free and clean rest room with toilet paper and soap at least in gents part😉
Adam K — Google review
The santuari is very beautiful on the outside and looks like it has been inspired by the Sagrada Familia but on a much smaller scale. The inside is a little plain but still worth a visit. The castle, I didn't enjoy. There isn't much left of the ruins and while there is a step you can climb to the top, it's completely in the dark and without railing so it didn't feel safe. What was also a downside to our visit was the horde of school children yelling and screaming and running around, uncaring that someone was trying to take a picture, and the teachers who had brought a huge speaker and put the music ridiculously loud. If they rented the place for a private event, then close the santuari, if not, someone should be there to keep things in order. You can't really enjoy your cup of coffee in the middle of a club.
Emma S — Google review
Amazing cathedral. Staggering beauty. I really love the architecture of this place. While the stone materials are unique, the soft , flowing architectural shapes are strikingly similar to the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Santa Maria Magdalena is a detail-seeker's dream, with the various patterns of stone work. The spires are absolutely beautiful. We were, however, disappointed that opening hours listed on Google were incorrect. Hence, we showed up about 5 minutes too late for an inside tour.

Atalaya Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Well-preserved medieval fortress with views over Villena & surrounding hills, offering guided tours.
"Rising up from the mountain of Saint Christopher at an altitude of 550 metres, the castle is strategically located on the corridor of the River Vinalopó, giving it control of passage towards the lands and valleys of Castilla La Mancha, the valley of Montesa and the lands of Valencia and Murcia. The fortress now allows us to distinguish the two key periods in its history: Islamic and Feudal. Its construction began with the Almohads in the late 12th century, employing the rammed earth building technique to raise the ramparts and the first two floors of the keep. This involved compressing a damp mixture of sand, gravel and lime into an externally supported frame or mould, creating a solid wall. Various changes took place after the Christian conquest in the 14th and 15th centuries, which included the stone reinforcement of the existing ramparts, the enlargement of the keep using masonry, which reflects how the tower looks today, and the construction of an outer wall or barrier surrounding the entire fortress, in line with Castilian traditions. As a result, it was transformed into a magnificent late medieval construction whose structure and appearance allow us to place it amongst the large castles that marked the extensive Marquisate of Villena."

We had an amazing experience, the staff was very friendly and helpful, we took the tour without a guide, there was a lot of QR codes with plenty of information. I was able to take photos and video and we learned about the castle. We loved it! Tickets need to be bought in the tourism office.

At last a castle that was open! Buy tickets from the Tourist Information a couple of hundred metres away. Well worth the explore.
Mike S — Google review
The castle offers a beautiful backdrop for photos and is great for a quick visit, with a nice mix of peace and charm. No crowded place. Convenient parking is available near the ticket office.
Natalia Z — Google review
If you follow the signs to this place rather than your sat nav it takes you to a small car park next to the Tourist Information where you can buy tickets for the castle. The castle is a few minutes walk and the custodian on the gate is very helpful and knowledgeable with very good English. The castle is superb - a 10th century Arab core that was expanded and updated after the Christian conquest. It has been well restored and there is a very good route that you can follow which covers the curtain walls, inner bailey and keep. There are lots of information boards as you walk through and some great little features like the drawings done by Italian prisoners in the 13th (?) century and marks from the cannonball damage in the eighteenth century siege. The views from the tower roof are both awe inspiring and nauseating if you look over the edge! The medieval core of the city looks interesting too although it is swamped by less than attractive modern development. A great castle to visit and very good value (€3 for an adult) for the couple of hours we spent there.

The Castle of Almansa, a stunning 14th-century fortress located in Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and families alike. This well-preserved castle offers guided tours that showcase its beautiful architecture and delightful restoration efforts. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding area while exploring the castle's fascinating museum, which even features a virtual reality tour. Although some areas may not be fully wheelchair accessible, there are still spots that everyone can appreciate.
Little but intense is this castle in the old town of Almansa, achieving a overview of the city and many kilometers around. Inside you can learn about the history and the way it was constructed. You have to pay (no much) to the visit.

Had a wonderful visit to this castle. €8 for my auntie and I. Excellent staff members who spoke good English. All the information boards were in Spanish and English. Good little museum/ information centre in the castle. Be aware lots of steps. Lots of uneven ground. Great views from all the different levels. The keep of the castle has one of the tallest spiral staircases with no centre column “Caracole de Mallorca “.

I loved the castle. It's still well conserved, it's easy to go up but I advise you to put sport shoes on you. The museum is interesting and take care of the last scale, cargol stairs. Bonito con bonitas vistas de la ciudad, recomendable para un fin de semana cualquiera.

A pleasant surprise and a recommendation for children and families. A must-see with very well-equipped facilities where the little ones can enjoy a trip back in time to the Middle Ages in our region and learn about the history and significance of this medieval town and its various benefactors. The tour includes free audio guides that can be listened to on your mobile phone throughout the tour, in Spanish and English. The tour allows you to reach the top of the castle's keep, with stunning views of the entire area. With the castle ticket, you can then visit the museum of the Battle of Almansa of 1707, which was key to the War of the Spanish Succession between the Bourbons and the Habsburgs, for one euro more. The town is also very pretty and has a very good selection of bars, tapas, and restaurants, affordable for the whole family. In short, a recommended visit to enjoy a walk through medieval history through a castle integrated into the rock, at the highest point in the region.

Spain has a ton of castles turned museums and tourist spots. However, this is the best one we have been to so far. Clean, well organized, beautiful architecture, delightful restoration touches, beautiful views, and friendly staff. Although not fully wheelchair accessible there are some spots that even people who are wheelchair bound can enjoy. We really loved it and will definitely visit again soon. It is very family friendly and there is plenty of parking nearby.
Ronda Z — Google review
It's worth the stop as it's beautiful inside and they have a nice museum inside. Make sure you walk all the way to the top to see the gorgeous staircases and rooms.

Only ok at the moment because you can only walk round it. It has been closed for restorations for some time but I think it'll be opening soon. Almansa is a lovely little picturesque town and the castle will be a 5 star attraction when it opens to the public.

I totally enjoyed our visit here. The caves are surprisingly extensive and lovely and cool. The tour ended with tasting their excellent wines and a dish of meats, cheese and mini breads. Capped off with a gift of the rather lovely glass's in which our wines were served, Which leaves each of us with a souvenir of a happy day (they will be getting frequent use:)

A disappointing visit today. We had booked 32 euro tickets for an English speaking tour and travelled from England via calpe staying in jumilla for 3 nights to visit the bodegas only to find that they could not trace our reservation although we had the details to hand. We were advised that we could take the spanish tour with a guide who spoke some English (very little if any). It is a lovely place but a lot of money for 3 of us when we came away having learned nothing about the wine industry in jumilla. We spoke very politely to the man at the till who had a good grasp of English to be told he could do nothing for us we needed to contact his boss. The wine tasting at the end was very good but there is no doubt we were let down and had we known we would not have gone. Be warned please make sure you are getting what you paid for. As a wine producer of large standing I would have thought you could have at least compensated us with a bottle of wine! But no we even had to ask for the wine glasses which were part of the 32€ package. We have had 3 lovely days in jumilla and much better service & value elsewhere in the town. What a shame!

One of the best vine tasting experiences I had. Guided tour in english cause we traveled with some British friends. If you can afford, buy the middle price tour for EUR 32.00 and you will probably be in a smaller group of people. Luzon produces excellent wines

Great booking service and warm welcome when we arrived. First time for us in a vineyard so we had no expectations. We had the luck to be alone and could ask questions during the tour. Christina was very comfortable in her guiding and could answer any questions we had without problems. Her English was very good and we had no problems understanding. Since this is after harvest we had no option to taste the grapes, but got a tasting of three wines after the tour. I do recommend Christina and her colleagues.
Jonas S — Google review
Reserved an English speaking tour over the phone, but when we arrived the tour was in Spanish. When I told the guide some of my group couldn’t understand, and we booked the English speaking tour, the guide said “you don’t have to stay you can leave”. Disappointing after a 1 and a half hour drive that some of my group could not understand anything and were told the solution is to leave or join the Spanish tour. Based on other reviews, this seems to be a common problem here. In terms of the tasting, I have been before and they have since really scaled back. Not as much of a selection of food as was in the past and less wine / they have started giving some of their cheapest wines for the tasting. This is strange, because I know Luzon has some great wines. It’s also in contrast to other wineries in Jumillia where you sample their best wines (and would make sense because it incentivises people to buy them? But I would not buy any of the wines given at the tasting in Luzon). Odd all round. I also remember in the past we could sample other wines at the bar after the tasting to see if we wished to purchase, but they have also stopped this. It’s a shame, it used to be a great tasting / tour which is why I came back with friends to share the experience, but it now feels like it’s all about making max profit at the expense of quality. Would be great if they went back to how they conducted and organised the tour in the past. That was definitely worth the visit.

This was a treat for someone who had travelled to here via Calpe. We were booked on an English speaking guide. When we arrived there was no English speaking guide, We were advised to jion a Spanish group. .The guide spoke very little English. Although we understood the basics of wine making it was a disappointment that we did not get what we had asked for the tastings would have been informative. . When we approached the desk to address our concerns there was no one who wanted to take responsibility for the oversite. All the gentleman on the desk wanted to do was pass the complaint on . He did not want to try and rectify the situation. . Also the free glass were not very forthcoming which was included in the price.

Cuevas del Diablo, located in Alcala del Jucar, is a fascinating destination known for its unique hillside pockmarked with caves and tunnels. Over the centuries, these rocky dwellings have been carved out of the material, some of which are remarkably well-preserved to this day. One of the most popular attractions is the Cueva del Diablo (Devil's Cave), easily accessible from the village with clear signage.
Omg!!! This place is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. It might be because I love caves and cave houses...From the village are plenty of signs to the Devil's cave. You can't miss it! At the reception is the owner, such a caracter, such a lovely man ( I think he is well known in Spain ) with his beautiful dog. We were allowed to visit with our two doggies. 💜 Impressed by the low price that includes the visit and a drink at the 5 floor balcony. There is a lot of history, old objects, pictures with the owner's past....so relaxing. I felt full of good energy and vibe after the visit. And the feeling of enjoying a good glass of red wine at the balcony...Absolutely gorgeous!!! Thanks for sharing with us this place!

A amazing place worth visiting. Got a chance to meet the legendary El Diablo in person. The place is preserved well. There is also lot of photos and antique stuff inside the cave. You also get a free beverage inside. A must visit if you are in Alcalá del Júcar.

Quirky place to go and check out. One drink is included in the entrance price, we all enjoyed a red vermout. We also met El Diablo himself, so you always have that as a possibility.

What a great place to explore! Not my first visit but was for my girlfriend. Great collection of typical Spanish antiques, covering everything from cabinets full of matches, medical equipment, typewriters, farm tools and machinery (to name a few artifacts), my favorite being a mini tractor type ploughing machine with what looks like grannies armchair sat on top for the operator 😂😂. Great value at €3 per person which includes a drink at the far side of the caves, really nice little bar overlooking the river at the mountains that surround Alcalá de Júcar. You can explore further the caves by walking up a 7 stories stairway, so take a deep breath before you do! The cave walkways are fascinating and you discover little nooks along the way. Another benefit is how cool temperature wise in there, especially when it was 40+ outside, so a welcome relief. The owner who is a spitting image of Salvador Dali complete with pointy mustache, there are plenty of photos of him with famous people along the caves, and we managed to grab one with him when we left. Great experience highly recommend!

The Castillo de Alcalá del Júcar, a medieval fortress located in the heart of Alcala del Jucar, offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the town from its top. The fortress is nestled within a rocky ridge and features an artificial moat. Visitors can explore the pentagonal tower, which symbolizes stately power and serves as a defense axis for the enclosure. Additionally, there are three floors and a rooftop to explore.
The location is incredible, you can see the whole town, the bridge, the gorge both ways from here. We arrived at 14 and they wouldn't let us in. At the entrance there is a store with food and souvenirs, toilet.

The whole town is amazing, the houses are literally built into the gorge walls! Theres a medieval castle and caves that are actually the residence of an old Spanish bull fighter "El Diablo".. really interesting place to visit and explore. The entrance fee of €3 includes a drink in the underground bar. A must see. The local area is great for kids exploring smd adventurous activities like whitewater rafting, paintball, high rope trapeze... brilliant place!

Well worth a visit. €2.50 each, prices in the gift shop are very reasonable. Not much to look at in rhe Castle, 3 floors and the roof top which offered great views. The best part for me was the cave below the castle, well set out and lots to see. It is quite a walk through the town but the streets are very quaint. There is parking at the Castle for a few cars.

The fort is located on the top and has amazing views. There is an entry ticket but it’s worth it. You can get a 360 degree view of the town. The medieval fortress closes a small space in the rocky ridge, through a series of buildings and an artificial moat. In the fortress as a whole, the keep stands out, as the axis of defense of the enclosure and a symbol of stately power. It is a pentagonal tower, with two turrets at its rear ends, the result of the reforms carried out by D. Juan Pacheco, II Marquis of Villena, in the 15th century. The place has rich history. A must visit if you are in Alcalá Del Jucar.

The Castle of Chinchilla is a well-preserved fortress with a rich history, rebuilt in the 15th century on medieval fortresses. Although its interior is currently undergoing restoration and not accessible to visitors, the exterior surroundings offer stunning views and are meticulously maintained. The castle sits atop a hill, commanding breathtaking vistas of the surrounding Manchegan plateau. While access improvements are underway in the area, it's recommended for a day trip despite occasional closures that may limit entry to the castle itself.

Amazing castle. Only open for group bookings. We walked around the castle. Big car park. Entrance to the car park is a bit difficult. No toilets but worth seeing the castle, views and good place to park to walk around the town.

Atmospheric of a long gone age plus stunning views of 'el campo' and Albacete city in the distance....

A must-to. Especially with kids. Feel and breadth our Albacete medieval's life walking by Chinchilla's narrowed streets and alleys. Don't forget to go uphill to the castell and back to the village center a very pleasant and instructive talk in the tourist center where yo can see cannon balls, two French sabers and a reproduction of the original castle and know a bit more about its history. Very nice experience. Don't miss it!

Even though it’s closed, it is still worth a visit to walk the perimeter and explore some of the abandoned cave houses. The tourist information office in town has a model of the castle and lots of information surrounding its history.

Pasaje de Lodares is a stunning glass-roofed shopping arcade in Albacete, showcasing Italian modernist architecture from 1925. It's a significant landmark in the city and part of its artistic heritage. The area around Pasaje de Lodares offers an elegant and luxurious stay within Albacete's historic district, making it convenient for exploring nearby attractions like the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist and the Circus Theatre.

When I've been there the first time they told me this is like Galleria Vittorio Emanuele of Milan but in Albacete. As one of the few real "Milanese" left in the world I can say in my heart that it's true. It's the Albacetean way of the Galleria, and maybe it's for this that I feel Albacete like a second home for me.

Beautiful building but wish it had more shops in all the empty spaces. The city should rent them out for very little money so they are filled -and being more people in.

Very interesting. Hadn’t had the slightest idea how significant the folding knife making business was. The knife collection itself is very big. Both in types, geographic sample and sizes. It would be good to have an English version of the commentary available.

History museum
Belmonte Castle, a restored turreted 15th-century fortress, has been open to the public since 2010 for tours, events, and battle re-enactments. Originally built in 1456 and later reconstructed in the 19th century by Eugenia de Montijo, this castle offers an immersive experience with people dressed in period costumes and audio guides available. Visitors can explore various rooms and walk along the castle walls for unique views of the surrounding countryside and small town.
Great experience for all ages. You can already feel the history of this place as you see it in the distance while driving. 15€ including a guided tour of the trebuchet park where they explain all the medieval weapons with a working trebuchet (catapult) that you get to fire. You can download the Spain heritage app and audio for the castle tour. My cell coverage was spotty and they were able to provide me with WiFi access to download the app and audio when I asked the clerk. Lots to explore, we took about 3 hours to see everything taking pictures along the way. Castillo de Belmonte, a must see Cheers!

Belmonte Castle, situated in the picturesque town of Belmonte, Cuenca, Spain, is a stunning example of medieval architecture, blending Gothic and Mudejar styles. It was built in the second half of the 15th century by Don Juan Pacheco, the first Marquis of Villena, it stands atop San Cristóbal hill, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The castle's unique star-shaped design, with six towers reaching 22 meters high, makes it a standout among European fortresses. The fortress was practically abandoned between the 17th and 18th centuries and was more or less ruinous by the early 19th century. The heiress of the house of Villena, Eugenia de Guzman, better known as the Empress Eugenia de Montijo and her architect Alejandro Sureda began a restoration project in 1857, keeping the exterior in the original style but updating the interior to modern tastes. Its rich history includes the abive periods of abandonment and restoration, notably by Empress Eugenia de Montijo in the 19th century. It later served as a prison for the Partido Judicial de Belmonte, and as an Onsimo Redondo academy for the Francoist 'Frente de Juventudes'. It was abandoned and began to deteriorate again, before being made a cultural monument in 1931. It is now owned by the descendants of the empress' sister Maria Francisca de Sales Portocarrero. It was restored again in summer 2010 and opened to the public. Today, it is a Bien de Interés Cultural, hosting guided tours and exhibitions that delve into its fascinating past. Visitors can explore its grand halls, admire the intricate Mudejar ceilings, and enjoy the panoramic views from its ramparts. The castle's strategic location in Castilla-La Mancha makes it an ideal day trip for history enthusiasts and those exploring the region's cultural heritage. After visiting the castle, a stroll through the charming town of Belmonte offers a chance to enjoy local cuisine and hospitality.

Worth a visit! This castle is quite lovely with various rooms to visit. You can walk all along the castle walls which is quite unique and you can get amazing photos of the city. Buying tickets in advance or at the window is recommended. If you’re also in the area, go visit the windmills as it’s around a 10 minute drive so you could do both trips in one day!

Wonderful restored castle. It is a beautiful place to roam around with the information on the scan code in English or Spanish. It's very informative. My only issue was the extra 3€ for views the weapons etc at the exterior of the castle. Still it was worth the entrance fee of 8€

Worth seeing and lots of views of the country and small town. Amazing to see such an old castle/fortress in such good condition, and be able to take photos and your time when exploring the inside and surrounding area. There are 5 towers to climb up and overlook in all directions, and u will also see three old windmills that were talked about in Don Quioti's novel. This place is in the middle of no-where, and a few minutes after u leave and look back, u won't see anything again - a very well hidden place with all the hills around.

These windmills are really well preserved and the area surrounding them very well done. If I compare the visit to the windmills in Consuegra, this visit was more pleasant. There are several bars, cafés and souvenir shops right next to the windmills. We had a coffee and a snack while sitting and admiring the views. The parking area wasn't huge, but they are working on it...this area is in construction and when it is finished, it will be even better. Very good experience overall. If you can only visit one set of windmills on the Don Quijote trail, let it be Campo de Criptana. No tickets needed.

Sights & Landmarks
Molinos de Viento de Consuegra is a collection of twelve charming whitewashed windmills dating back to the 19th century, originally used for grinding flour. Situated in La Mancha (Ruta de Don Quijote), this site offers incredible views and a picturesque setting that evokes the spirit of Don Quixote. Visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty and capture stunning photographs without the crowds, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful excursion.
These are 12 windmills built in the 16th century on Cerro Calderico. They evoke the windmills featured in Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote and are known as a symbol of the La Mancha region. Each windmill has a unique name, most of which are related to Don Quixote. The closest windmill to the town, named Bolero, has an information desk, and with an entrance fee, visitors can explore the interior of the windmill. With the same ticket, visitors can also visit Consuegra Castle and other historic sites in Consuegra. Please note that the windmill blades are just frameworks, so they do not turn even when the wind blows.

Must do trip from madrid!!! So worth it to drive there (about 1 hr), you only need an hour or two there to take photos and go up inside one of the mills. Amazing views, and you can walk/hike to see all of them or also go by car and stop at each of them. No regrets.

Visiting the Molinos de Viento de Consuegra felt like stepping into a storybook! 🌾 These iconic windmills, perched along the hilltop, are absolutely breathtaking — especially with the sprawling countryside stretching out in every direction 😍. Walking from one windmill to the next, we couldn’t help but imagine Don Quixote and his legendary adventures coming to life. The views from the top are spectacular, with the castle standing proudly nearby and the charming town of Consuegra below. It’s the perfect place for photography, a peaceful walk, and a moment to soak in the history and beauty of Spain. We went early in the morning, and it was quiet and serene, with just the sound of the breeze turning the sails. A must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Castilla-La Mancha — full of magic, history, and unforgettable scenery. 🌟📸

Such a fun place to stop and see this historic site in Spain. The windmills are much larger than they look in pictures and it's amazing to see them up close. You can pay a couple of Euros to go up and see the inside. I think it's worth it as it was very fascinating. There is a little movie they show you that explains how they worked.

The windmills of Consuegra are located on a high ridge overlooking the plains of La Mancha. It is a very nice place to visit, offering a wide panorama of the Castilian countryside—a classic view of the region, often associated with the novel Don Quixote. The views from the hilltop are excellent and stretch clearly for miles, providing ample opportunity for good photographs. The site also features the Medieval Castle of Consuegra, which is located right next to the mills. The castle is an interesting structure to explore, offering solid insight into the area's history and strategic past. While it requires a drive, this destination is totally worth the trip. It combines significant history and appealing architecture with great natural views. If you are traveling through central Spain, we recommend making this a worthwhile stop on your itinerary.

The view from here is stunning, offering a panoramic sight of the town of Consuegra and the surrounding plains, along with the windmills on Cerro Calderico. There is an information desk, and with an entrance fee, visitors can explore the interior of the castle. With the same ticket, visitors can also visit other historic sites in Consuegra.

The Castillo de Consuegra is an incredible place to visit! The views over the town and surrounding plains are absolutely breathtaking, especially with the famous windmills right next to it. The castle itself has been carefully restored and gives you a real sense of its long history, from its Moorish origins to later military uses. The tour is well-organized, with informative signs and guides that help you imagine what life was like here centuries ago. Walking the walls and exploring the towers was definitely a highlight. It’s also very family-friendly, and the combination of the windmills and the castle makes it feel like you’ve stepped back in time. If you’re traveling through La Mancha, this is a must-see stop—beautiful, historic, and unforgettable!

Amazing and the views are breaking! You can enter the Castillo and a molino for a small fee €7.00 ,well woth it , there is plenty of parking ,at the bottom or nearer the molinos , we enjoyed the walk up from the bottom carpark , where you can also enjoy the picnic area there. We also saw it all lit up at night Impressive.

The Castillo de Consuegra is a fascinating place to explore! 🏰 Perched high on the hill next to the famous windmills, it offers spectacular panoramic views of the countryside, the town, and the iconic Molinos de Consuegra 😍. Walking through its towers and walls felt like stepping back in time, with well-preserved areas that bring its medieval history to life. We had a wonderful time exploring by ourselves, but would love to come back for a guided tour!! The gentleman who assisted us when we entered was so friendly and helpful, and it was wonderful to learn about some of the history of this region!

This is a really fantastic place. We took a slight detour on our way to Cordoba and it was well worth it. The windmills and castle are fabulous and the walk up was fun. There's great motorhome parking at the foot of the hill and you can either take the road or climb directly up the hill on the well trodden informal path. Great views and plenty of windmills to see. The town that you travel through on your way up is also interesting and unspoilt by development. Highly recommended.

This place looks like plaza de España in Madrid but smaller. There are few restaurants and bars but nothing else around to see. Sp you can go here just to see the plaza and nothing more.

This is the town's main plaza. It has various restaurants and terrazas. It's usually busier in the evenings. Nice place to grab a bite or have a drink.
