Statue de la Liberté

Sculpture
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Statue of Liberty in Colmar, France is a 12-metre resin replica and serves as a memorial to Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor who was born in Colmar. This tourist attraction is unique to the area and can be found at the northern suburbs roundabout. While it may not be as well-known as its larger counterpart in New York, it remains a beautiful imitation that showcases Bartholdi's talent.
Did you know? This resin statue is a 12-meter-high replica of the Statue of Liberty. It was sculpted as part of the commemoration of the centenary of the death of the artist Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904), a native of Colmar and creator of "Liberty Enlightening the World." A series of initiatives and events, as well as numerous demonstrations, have been planned in Colmar to mark the anniversary of his death. Among these, the Municipality of Colmar has chosen to install this replica of the Statue of Liberty at the northern entrance to the city. It is intended to honor the most prestigious of Colmar residents and to pay tribute to the work of art that undoubtedly remains the most famous in the world. This statue is also an additional link with the United States, already symbolized since 1986 by the signing of a twinning pact between Colmar and the university town of Princeton, located not far from New York.
Rap R — Google review
It is so beautiful sculpture, so huge and precisely made. I am so glad I have visited this place despite it was pretty hardly approachable by walking. Way from Colmar is lead through industrial zone and in the end you must run over roundabout to reach this impressing statue of liberty.
Klara D — Google review
Visited this gem on the 4th of July and honestly? Best decision ever. Forget New York’s version — overcrowded, overrated, and overpriced. Colmar’s Statue de la Liberté was absolutely free, and I didn’t have to dodge a single obnoxiously loud tourist. She may be smaller, but she’s mighty — and way more photogenic without the background chaos. Bonus: you get a full 360° view without even leaving the comfort of your air-conditioned SUV.
Andreas M — Google review
The place where the journey through the fairytale city of Colmar begins. Nearby there is a convenient supermarket parking lot where you can leave your car. Thanks to the sculptor Bartholdi for his work
Valeriy V — Google review
Very beautiful place, worth the trip. I didn't expect to see the Statue of Liberty in this place, I was pleasantly surprised. A wonderful and lively city with many places to visit.
Ginju F — Google review
We have stopped by just for fun. It’s a replica created in 2004 which is not the same size as the original figure. I have seen several replicas and this is bigger the other. If you have some free time before your flight you can stop by.
Oleg Y — Google review
It's a nice experience but if they ad this as a tourist attraction. It should be placed in a park not in middle of the road. I reckon, it should be placed in a park.
N S — Google review
We spotted the mini Statue of Liberty in Colmar while driving by, such a fun and unexpected sight! It’s a perfect stop to learn more about its history and connection to New York. A cool little landmark with interesting background and symbolism. Such a cool surprise when leaving Colmar.

The Musée du Jouet in Colmar is a captivating attraction showcasing over a thousand toys dating from the 19th century to the present day. Housed in a former cinema, this museum offers an extensive collection of dolls, teddy bears, miniature trains and cars, rocking horses, tricycles, as well as modern toys like robots and LEGO creations. Visitors can immerse themselves in nostalgia while discovering how children used to play before the digital era.
Very nice toy museum. Three floors of exhibits. Play space in the middle for kids.
Angela Z — Google review
Nice little toy museum in the center of Colmar with several nice exhibits, including model trains and an impressive Playmobil display. You can also play several games, including boardgames and classic arcade games. Not the biggest museum, but nice to spend an hour or so, especially if you have young children. Highly recommended!
Roel F — Google review
A fascinating museum about the history of toys. You can find many toys from different era like Barbie, teddy bears, dolls, cars, ... It's a pretty small museum but you can spend an hour or more inside. There's also some board games that you can use during your visit which is nice. It's a museum for everybody but I would say mostly older kids and adults. It's more on the educational side which wasn't an issue for me. I learned a lot of things and enjoyed my time. Also the staff is lovely!
Melanie M — Google review
Nice museum with lots for kids to do. The puppet show was unfortunately not working
Olga K — Google review
Its a small, very cute museum. At each floor, you will find board games or other activities to play with your kids, along with an exhibition of tous from different times. Last floor is dedicated to trains and several of them run!
Marjorie Z — Google review
I went with my son with low expectations having not read any reviews and literally making a spontaneous choice to go. My son and I engaged in everything that was on offer. It was funny for him to see toys his dad had once played with. We built stuff we pressed buttons and loved the time we had there. Only complaint is that some of the buttons didn't work and we could only get one train to work. But all in all friendly staff nice well laid out Museum.
Scott R — Google review
Nice little museum full of old-school toys including puppets, model trains and cars, Barbies.
Kristjan V — Google review
Small museum with nice exhibition. Wish the play area had more toys available to play with. Worth a visit.

Colmar Old Town

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Vieille Ville, also known as the Old Town of Colmar, is a picturesque and charming area that feels like something out of a fairy tale. The streets are lined with colorful half-timbered houses, creating a storybook-like atmosphere. Visitors can wander through narrow cobblestone streets and explore local cafes, bakeries, and shops offering crafts. St. Martin's Church stands as an impressive architectural marvel in this historic district.
It is an extremely beautiful town. It is better to be called a living museum. The only drawback is the large number of tourists visiting there. Maybe it is better to target a period where tourism is at its lowest level so you can enjoy it more. On weekends you can buy a cheaper family ticket from Strasbourg for Colmar and the whole region
Ragui F — Google review
This place is so beautiful it’s almost hard to believe people used to (and still do) live there. Every nook and cranny hides beautiful facades and picturesque displays of little shops and cafes. I’d recommend this gem over more popular European (and even French) destinations.
Ania R — Google review
Fabulous place, plenty to see around every corner. The market hall was amazing and also there was an artisan fair on the day I visited. However it was difficult to find public toilets as the signage wasn’t clear enough.
Kim D — Google review
This little town is something out of a fairytale! Definitely a Disney snow white feel. The buildings are beautifully decorated, the presentation of the town and the shopping was amazing! A must visit destination for a day trip!
Shauna T — Google review

Cute little Barvarian-style village, lots of neat places to shop and eat. The dish of the Alsace area is Tarte flambée (a flat, crispy crusted pizza) and it's available at almost every restaurant here.

Home Little Venice is a charming district located in the southeast of Colmar, France. The area features colorful half-timbered houses dating back to the 14th to the 18th centuries, originally inhabited by wine-producers, market gardeners, and boatmen. The tradition of painting houses according to the occupants' business adds to its charm.
Best apartment we stayed in whilst on our 2 week tour of Europe!!! So cosy, comfortable beds and sofa! A TV we could actually listen to as had the option to change some channels to English. Such a lovely view also! Right out on to the little canal! Highly recommend!!!
Sammiiee A — Google review
This place is in a great location, but is very dirty and has broken doors, broken lights, a broken shower. It is a beautiful home on the outside, and is in a great location but it has been very poorly managed and neglected and it is obvious when you stay there. Great if all you care about is the location, but avoid it if you want to have a decent place to stay.
Chad H — Google review
A "Real Eyeopener"! This compact "old town" area of Southeast Colmar is a place "not to be missed" by visitors! It gets its name due to the "historic houses" built on both sides of the small, meandering, Lauch River.... and the "fairy tale vibe". The area is wonderful to walk around-- and has cobbled streets, colourful "half-timbered" houses, and a "covered market". It can also be seen by boat. It has been awarded by TripAdvisor the esteemed "Certificate of Excellence". It is indeed well worth a visit. It is no wonder that it has been rated as one of the "top of places" to visit/things to do, while in Colmar. It will definitely add to one's memories of the visit. I hope that this Review has been helpful.
Mark D — Google review
Lovely time walking around Home Little Venice there's so much more than the picturesque bridge's to see with a few lovely restaurants along the canal, and little boat trip back and forth . It's only a short walk from here to the indoor market . My recommendations would be early evening when all the lights come on for beautiful pictures .

The Unterlinden Museum, located in a former 13th-century Dominican convent, is a captivating blend of religious and local history alongside an impressive art collection. One of its most renowned pieces is the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grunewald, known for its powerful depiction of Jesus' story and its historical significance as a source of solace for medieval hospital patients.
It was very positive... I was more keen this time on contemporary art works which are breathtaking and it invited me to humility... Yes, they speak much beyond what I understand now..
Arun S — Google review
Try to came by here if you happen go to Colmar or the area around. The museum with remarkable architectuur and art collections. Is not as big as Louvre but it is worth a visit. Price ticket for adults €13 per person.
SISU T — Google review
Mid-sized museum with local artefacts, a famous painting (the Isenheim Altarpiece), and some modern art.
Sarah M — Google review
A stunning mix of medieval depth and modern elegance. The Isenheim Altarpiece alone is worth the visit – intense, haunting, unforgettable. The museum’s layout blends old and new beautifully, and the collection ranges from ancient artifacts to Picasso. Informative displays in multiple languages and a calm atmosphere make it ideal for a 2–3 hour visit. Highly recommended for anyone interested in art, architecture, or history.
Martin S — Google review
Great museum lots to see and so many different floors and rooms...we spent 2hrs 40 minutes ...viewing the many historic artifacts...
Margaret H — Google review
I don’t often rate museums but this one deserves it. The Isenheim Altarpiece is the star of the show, and they do it perfectly. Plenty of space is given to each set of panels. Plenty of educational materials are readily available. And bless them for this-benches so one can sit and contemplate. Generous space is also allowed sit the masterpiece can be thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. The rest of the museum is a delight. A wide range of art and artifacts from the history of Colmar and Alsace is presented. Again-with thought and thoroughness.
Rob R — Google review
Intimate museum with some extraordinary pieces of art. Very quiet and relaxed visit. I was in awe of the Insenheim Altarpiece. It is extraordinary!
Leslie B — Google review
Spectacular museum with lots of impressive paintings on display. The Isenheim Altarpiece is spectacular and worth looking at. The building is lovely to walk around. Reasonable entry fee at €14 for an adult. Would definitely recommend a visit.

(Translated by Google) Bravo for your typical village, absolutely magnificent, with its houses which immerse us in the heart of Alsace. Bravo for the cleanliness of the streets and alleys. We received a very warm welcome from the traders and restaurateurs. The very pleasant little train ride with of course a visit to the city but also to the vineyards. A big, no, huge thank you for all the Easter decorations even on your Town Hall, it feels good, respecting our traditions. (Translated by Google) Like many of the comments I've read, I'm complaining about the exorbitant parking prices in this town, and especially the very poorly signposted parking ticket machines. I paid for 24 hours of campervan parking instead of a private car and just went to the restaurant. I won't be setting foot in this town again and will favor the surrounding areas, which are just as picturesque, warmer, and more welcoming. Skip Eguisheim from your visits. Not a single geranium, emblem of our beautiful Alsace, on the various village fountains, and what can we say about the flower boxes...grasses dried out for ages....as a tourism player, I deplore the fact that one of the most beautiful villages in France no longer showcases its heritage and allows a deleterious atmosphere to take hold....I remain hopeful that you will remedy this.... Paid parking and exorbitant rates for a village (a fixed rate is imposed). The police are on the lookout for tickets. We were also disappointed by the atmosphere, which was deadly for a school holiday weekend. It's a real shame because the village is very beautiful and unique. Fortunately, the storks were there to brighten up our visit. (Original) Nous visitions les villages de la route des vins mais nous avons été déçus de l'accueil à Eguisheim. Le Parc du Petit Prince

Mentioned on

Amusement park
Water & Amusement Parks
Le Parc du Petit Prince is a family-friendly amusement park in Alsace, offering a variety of rides and attractions suitable for kids, including trampolines, a maze, and a tethered hot air balloon. While it may not offer the same level of thrills as some larger parks, it provides an ideal introduction to roller coasters for young visitors.
A nice amusement park especially for toddlers and younger elementary-school kids. We visited on a rainy day, the rides were easy to take on without waits. Staff were generally friendly, and there are not only rides but also small zoo, and trampoline ground in this park. However, older elementary kids might find it a bit boring and it could use more Petit Prince–themed characters and decorations to their theme, I think. But I can definitely say that my family really enjoyed this lovely 'Le Parc du Petit Prince'
KH B — Google review
It’s a nice little park, suitable for smaller kids. Half of the attractions though are open only at certain time of the day which happens to be the same for all (13:00 or 14:00h) and even if you’re there on time you still may not get a spot. I’d also advise you to bring your own food and water as the service in the restaurants is dreadfully slow. I’ve never seen angry like this in my life and I’ve visited a lot of theme parks. Also- the coffee is really bad.
Elica K — Google review
Absolutely brilliant for smaller kids 18-6/7. My 2.5 year old (96 cm talk) lived it. Usually the offer is for older kids but here we can really enjoy with smaller kids too. Well regulated and controlled for the size and security for kids overall. Walkable and oversee able. Also great that they allow to bring in your own water and snacks for the kid, as usually the snacks for kids at parks are terrible ( pint for improvement … how about a healthy bar for kids). The only thing I would wish for is for more supervision at the jumping castle for the ‘small ones’. That was quite the trauma experience for my daughter. You should have supervision HERE as you have in other spaces. Bigger kids entered, too many kids at ones…. If you fix that I would give you many more stars.
Nicola G — Google review
Great amusement park for kids under 10! It's big enough to keep them entertained for a day, small enough not to overwhelm them either. I'd say the same for the attractions. My kids are 4 and 6, and they got to do all the attractions (and adult has to sit by each children under 130cm) without being scared! The only downside is the food.. expensive for the quantity and quality (pack your own!)
Marjorie Z — Google review

Visited this nice and small but amazing park just a few days ago on 24th July 2024. Really liked ALL the rides that were there, and even the old plane (which was an Antonov 2 from Russia I believe) that was on display next to the log water ride. The park was a little bit busy and cleaniness was a little lacking. You know what, I may come back here one day! 5/5 rating.

The Écomusée d'Alsace, located near Mulhouse in Alsace, is a museum village featuring reconstructed traditional Alsatian buildings from the period of 1850-1950. This open-air conservation museum showcases a variety of historical structures such as school houses, taverns, farmhouses, and more. Visitors can immerse themselves in the natural and green setting of an Alsatian village from the early 20th century.
Wonderful village! We liked it. We were lucky because the museum wasn’t busy and we had sunny day. There is a little patisserie, we ate something, it was delicious. They have done really good things in this village. We bought tickets from the desk, no queue. I liked this museum more than christmas markt.

Great museum. Arrive promptly at opening as it requires a full day to see everything on offer. A few exhibits could use better lighting. Staff very helpful. Not only ordered a taxi but came out with me to make sure I got it. A designated taxi pickup area would be helpful. Lunch at the hotel restaurant very good with friendly staff. White storks everywhere!

Great museum to travel back in time and learn a lot of things. There is a small town of houses, stables, towers, shops, bridges, gates, etc, that are open and nicely enriched with multiple related items, each presenting different but interesting info from an era long gone. There are multiple activities to follow like domestic animals feeding, grape juice production and tasting, stable visit, wine tasting, hand crafts etc. There are restaurants and hotel options as well inside this old town. The parking just outside is free of charge, abundant and shaded. You need to visit the earliest possible because the place is quite big to explore and includes a lot of activities to follow and it is very interesting place for both kids and adults. So, you need plenty of time to see even half of what is offered within one day unless you start very early.

Very nice experience within the museum. It was Walpurgia's Day and were different interesting events there. And also..inside the museum you can learn how to make the alsacian bow that women used to wear in the ~1900

This is a great place to visit if you find yourself in the area. Not expensive and you can walk around at your own pace to see how they used to live in simpler times. It's a 'living museum' so there are people dressed in appropriate costume going about their trades. You can see a working forge, carpenters, and old school with teachers etc. The buildings ar from different time periods and have been dismantled and painstakingly reassembled on site. Really authentic and fascinating to see how housing progressed. I would highly recommend a visit. All outdoors so take a coat!

A wonderful place to visit. I would go off season as this is not a place you want to visit with crowds of people. The houses are small and do not accommodate many people at a time. We spent about 2.5 hours on our visit. Free parking. Lots of walking. Note, we visited in October and the restaurants were closed.

Interesting place to visit seeing old buildings of the area. My ancestry on my Dad's side is from Alsace so I had to see this musee, glad I stopped. Don't miss going to the Tavern on site. Good food and good service!

Súper cute place with animals and a vegetable garden! It’s a great place to go with children, and you can bring your dog too! Everyone working there was really nice, the place is very clean and very well taken care of, parking is no problem and you have a picnic area to have your lunch in nature. Highly recommend it!

The Musée National de l'Automobile, also known as the Cité de l'Automobile or the Mulhouse Car Museum, is a vast complex that houses over 500 classic, prestige, and racing cars. It is considered the largest car museum in the world. The museum showcases the history of automobiles from their inception in the late 19th century to present day.
What a place! Totally didn't expect it to be quite this big or have as many cars and exhibits!! It is well worth the entrance fee and the exhibits are laid out really well. It has around 500 cars and 120 Bugatti's on display! The restaurant is great too and decent value. If you are in the area, visit and spend the afternoon seeing some great cars!
Alasdair M — Google review
If you’re a fan of classic cars, this museum is a mustsee. The collection is vast and seems endless, with many beautifully preserved vintage models. During my visit, there was also a special Tintin exhibition, which made it even more enjoyable.

This was a quick day trip for us while staying in Basel. Amazing collection of automotive history and well worth spending a few hours to explore. The collection of cars from the Tintin books was very cool, particularly if you're a Tintin fan like me!

DEFINITELY A MUST if you're in Mulhouse area, east France. The fact that Musée National de l'Automobile has an collection of more than 400+ cars ranging from more than 100 years ago, is amazing itself. Not to mention they have probably the world most complete collection of Bugatti, like almost a hundred of them. And one of them in the Masterpiece area, the 1936 50T Cabriolet, is now the world most expensive vehicle, worth 100M Euro !!! The details of it, and the idea of building a luxury car back to almost 100 years ago, is really highly admired.
Bill L — Google review
One of the best car museums i’ve ever been. It’s really worth every penny you’re paying for it. Tons of great, rare and unique pieces you will find there. Nice location, brilliant realisation. All cars are in good condition, and like in any other real museum, you can smell oil, gasoline and old leather from them. If you have kids or you just unbelievably love cars, you’ll be happy there
Igor G — Google review
Millions of dollars worth of cars, and they couldn’t get a decent translator for the placards? Honestly it became kind of amusing just how bad the English translations were after a while. The cars are stunning, there is no denying that. Arguably the most complete collection of vintage Bugattis in the world (but surprisingly no modern ones - no Chiron, EB110, not even a Veyron? Maybe they’re locked away somewhere else) 1/4 of the cars in the main hall were covered in white drapes due to construction. To the contractors/ museum officials, I say to you: “ plastic sheeting comes in transparent forms”. Overall a vanity project of a (now dead) rich white guy but there’s some stellar automotive and racing history laid out in these rooms. You’re in Mulhouse, you’re likely gonna go.
Greg M — Google review
Quite possibly one of the greatest car collections in the world. The outside is Beautifully presented... Upon entering the building you have no idea of how overwhelming this place can be. As you begin walking around and seeing a few cars you get lulled into it being a normal museum.... But then you walk into the room with a few Bugattis... You keep walking and seeing more Bugattis... Then you realise, one whole side is just Bugattis 🤯 Then you see the Bugatti Royale.. and realise hold on the have two Bugatti Royales 🤯 .. This place is crazy the sheer number of Bugattis and special cars is crazy... Then the story of the Schlumpf brothers ... Simply put, if you are a car lover you must come here... It's epic.. The shock value never diminishes even after multiple trips
RR C — Google review
One of the best car collections I have seen. From old to new and some extremely rare peices. We spent about 3 hours in here. There were lots of other things inside to keep children entertained too. There was a section all about Tintin which showed the different books and the cars linked to it which was nice. There was a driving simulator, small ride on cars and a vr F1 experience.

Mulhouse Zoological and Botanical Park is a park that combines both botanical garden and zoo in its beautifully landscaped grounds. The park plays host to a variety of wild animals such as tigers, lemur, polar bear among others. One interesting feature of the zoo is the Australian outback habitat which houses kangaroos.
Beautifully kept and maintained gardens and zoo. Animals were looked after really well, and we had a great time. There are facilities on site such as toilets, food and drink outlets and a gift shop. They are currently building a new Africa section which looks like it will be incredible! Great value for money and amazing to see endangered species being conserved.
Georgia D — Google review
Nice Zoo with happy and clean animals. Unfortunately, this time half of the park was on reconstruction and some other animals were hiding. Another thing I didn't get is why there is some garbage in the polar bear's pool?
Valeri E — Google review
It took me 4 hours to see everything. However, I was there mid september, so a lot of the flowers died off. So, it would have taken me longer, had I arrived in spring or summer. Well worth the entrance fee.
Dino P — Google review
Due to the weather being gloomy and cold, we couldn't see a lot of the animals. Because of construction and cleaning, only the toilet at the entrance was available, which was such a hassle as we didn't know about it. My favourite part of the visit was the Petits Amazon and seeing the cutest little beings.
Anne M — Google review
The Zoo is in the process of reconstructing the African section, so some areas are not accessible, but it's still a MUST see in Mulhouse. It houses several animals in extreme danger of extinction, and performs solid scientific studies and helps in their preservation. Among the rarest the Panthera Nebulosa and the Amur Leopard are magnificent examples. The Sea Lions, the Red Panda, the meerkats, the Polar bears.... Indeed a small and very interesting Zoo.

Hi, We visited on Sunday, so it wasn't crowded. But it was raining, so most of the animals were hiding. Apart from that it was Nice. 1) Buy your before coming to avoid queuing. 2)Most sure the weather is great to be able to see all the animals. 3)To avoid people go on Sunday. Bonus point: the parking is free.

A wonderful experience! The park is beautifully maintained, with a great mix of fascinating animals and lush botanical gardens. It’s perfect for families, nature lovers, or anyone looking for a relaxing and educational day out. The enclosures are spacious and thoughtfully designed, and you can really see the care for conservation. Ticket prices were reduced due to some renovation works, which was a nice bonus. Highly recommend a visit!

I visited with my 95 year old grandmother. She doesn't walk well. At the hotel reception I asked how I could get into the lower cave. We were taken there in several elevators with a small walk between. They asked how long it would take to pick it up, and came back to bring back. Thank you very much for the service. A beautiful and holy place with wonderful people.

Beautiful Abbey, store and village. The organist was rehearsing the day we went and was stunning experience to hear it and pray and admire the architecture. Definitely will come back.
Mabel H — Google review
Amazing place and worth a visit. The history Sanctuary of Our Lady at Mariastein goes back to the first half of the 14th Century. The story goes that a small boy had fallen from the precipice down into the valley and saved by the virgin. The boy’s mother was tending cattle and sheep. To escape from the heat of the day she and her son took refuge in a cave on the side of the cliff. When she was asleep the boy disappeared. When she awoke she searched around had a premonition that her son had fallen into the valley below. She headed into the valley and there she found him picking flowers for the beautiful woman who had carried him to safety. After falling more than 50m he was unhurt and told his mother that the Lady wished to be venerated in the cave above. According to tradition the cave grotto has been the site of many miraculous events. There are hundreds of placards form the faithful confirming their faith in the Virgin. This is a beautiful peaceful place. Apart from the sacred grotto and its chapels the basilica is absolutely worth a visit it is spectacular. The facade was built between 1830 and 1834 by the Austrian, Jakob Begle. The church itself dates back to 17th Century having been consecrated in 1655. The church was restored between 1930 and 1944 as well as being repainted in the years 1999/2000. Amazing place and worth a visit.

Cité du Train is a modern museum dedicated to the history of trains and railways, featuring an extensive collection of rolling stock and audiovisual exhibitions. It is renowned as the largest railway museum globally, with three main exhibits showcasing the evolution of rail travel through different eras. The museum's comprehensive scope has expanded over the years, including notable additions such as the famous TGV-Atlantique #325, which set a speed record in the early 1990s.
Definitely one of the great Train Museums of the World. Apart from the normal for Europe rolling stock, they even have three American made Locomotives. A MUST see if you're interested in History and Technology. Kid friendly, they have two kid rides.
Hector G — Google review
If you are a train fan, reserve 3-4 hours of your time to see everything. For everyone else: at least 2 hours to just walk the whole thing. Fantastic collection, large and diverse. Great for all ages; there are educational sections, too, to learn how trains work. Entrance was 16 EUR, which, in my opinion, is absolutely reasonable for the content you are getting. There is a local restaurant on site where you can eat for 15-20 EUR per adult, drinks included. Very easy access by public transport: 20-minute tram ride + 450-meter walk.

Nice railway museum with lots of examples of former trains (including various record-breaking locomotives and TGV trains!). There’s a gift shop and restaurant. Staff were really friendly and helpful.
Rob ( — Google review
Visiting this museum truly felt like an authentic journey back in time. The sheer variety of the trains on display was incredibly impressive; I honestly never imagined that locomotives and passenger cars could be so stunningly beautiful. I was especially fascinated to learn about the most luxurious 'apartment trains,' which were essentially rolling homes complete with sleeping rooms, dining cars, showers, and even private cabinets. It was a genuine surprise to see how many domestic comforts were available on the rails, historically and perhaps even today. What truly sets this museum apart is its immersive organization. It’s not just a static collection of old trains, but a thoughtful presentation of a specific historical era. The museum does an excellent job of creating the atmosphere of the past by installing various figures to simulate scenes of travel and daily life. While I would agree that the figures themselves weren't always aesthetically perfect, the recreated scenes and detailed environments successfully brought the history to life, offering a powerful sense of context and time.

Really nice mini-trip or stop along a road trip. If you want a tour of the factory, you can just walk in without an appointment and get a free tour (which, honestly, I couldn't believe in this day and age)! The staff were hesitant to do the tour in English because they felt their English wasn't good enough, but it was honestly very good (better than some non-native speakers who claim to speak English very well). The tour is long enough to not feel like a lure to get you into the gift shop, and not so long that you get over-saturated with info. Absolute recommendation!

Stephen G — Google review
The Wesserling Park and Castle, nestled in the heart of the Thur Valley in Alsace, is a unique blend of nature, heritage, and culture. While the park is well known for its stunning gardens, this year offers an exciting new experience: the Wesserling Castle has reopened its doors after a meticulous renovation, unveiling a new chapter in its fascinating history. After several years of restoration, the castle has been beautifully revitalized, while retaining its historical charm. Visitors can now explore its newly restored rooms, each filled with period details and a unique ambiance that transports you back in time. The perfect fusion of modern updates and historical elements showcases the respect given to this Alsatian treasure. As for the park, it remains a must-see. Designated a "Remarkable Garden," it features a variety of themed gardens, offering a delightful diversity of landscapes. From the formal French garden to the vibrant vegetable patches, each section bursts with colors and scents that change with the seasons. In the summer, the park hosts cultural exhibitions and events, adding a lively, artistic touch to your visit. Whether you are passionate about history, a lover of nature, or simply in search of a peaceful retreat, the Wesserling Park and Castle is sure to delight. The reopening of the castle in 2024 marks a new era for this iconic site, making it a must-visit destination this year.

Located in Gerardmer, this beautiful quiet glacial lake offers stunning views over Vosges mountains🏞🌄. It is located at 660 meters altitude and has a maximum depth of 38 meters and a mean depth of 17m. It's waters are cristal clear, and they are the home of many fish species like carp, roach fish, pike and trout🐟. You have the opportunity to walk/hike around the lake or to rent boats (there are 3 or 4 boat providers and 2 that offer lake tour with bigger boats), to eat icecream or have dinner or lunch on the shores of this lake. Although it is surrounded by mountains and it seems like a place where no water sports can be practiced, it has on it's shores a sports center where teens and children learn different water sports🚣🏄‍♀️. It also has on it's shores an aquatic center with a natural pool and a beach🏖. Visiting in May this wonderful city and region, I am pleasantly surprised and impressed by this beautiful lake. I can't wait to come back do do the lake tour by foot🚶‍♀️, and to hike on the peak of one of the mountains to see the lake view🏞 that i have heard about..

Small but nice lake, enough to spend couple of days of vacation here. Can rent the pedal boat to have a short look around (1 hour 16€). Or just walk on it's perimeter, won't take longer than few hours. Camp is there too, also you can find a casino and cozy tables with benches for a picnic. The lake itself is quite clean, allowed to fish and swim.

Cascade de Mérelle is a small yet picturesque waterfall located in a beautiful forest. The trail to the waterfall can be challenging, with some reviewers mentioning the need for proper hiking shoes and caution when navigating steep and slippery paths. However, despite the potential difficulties, visitors have found the journey through mossy trails and alongside a rocky stream to be absolutely stunning.
Modest but beautiful waterfall. The route up or down can be a challenge for young children or people with decreased mobility, but is absolutely gorgeous, meandering over mossy trails and following the rocky stream. We visited in the cold/wet season (january) which made it a challenge at points (at least wear water proof shoes) but I reckon it's nothing short of amazing in summer/spring!

Been here combine with the other 2 waterfalls, this one is a steep hike up over rocks, just follow the path. Waterfall isn't as beautifull as cascade tendon but the walk up is nice. It's also possible to combine it with the viewpoint Mérelle I believe..

Very beautiful place. It's not the easiest path, so good shoes are recommended!
Katja — Google review
It is a small walk from the parking place (10 mintes) or a moderate clime or decent from the lake (166 meters). The waterfall in August is a big joke. When you make a picture under a right angle it looks like a waterfall. But when you come closer you see it is a small stream only 3 meters height... So be prepared. The observation tower is on the other hand very nice, especially during sunny weather you have a spectacular view over the lake. So the cascade is nice to do as combination with the tower. But I would not recommend to go to the waterfall as only destination.

(Translated by Google) A great discovery, my son loved meeting the goats in their field and feeding them. A little cheese tasting on arrival made us want to stop at the stand on the way back! (The pepper/goat cheese is to die for) The only downside was that the film was a bit too long, especially for children...

A nice activity with children. Be there at 15h00 so you can go along to fetch the goats. Some of the goats are very big but they are all very friendly. There is a long explanation and a video about the goats and also about the dangers of re-introducing the wolf in the wild. Worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood with children. They love to feed and pet the goats and can cuddle with the young animals.

This place was surprisingly full for what it is, which is essentially a goat-stable with a small attached shop consisting of a single refrigerated display counter. Although it came as a surprise to see so many people had made the trip across the narrow (basically one-lane) winding roads to the top of the mountain, it agreeably does have more to offer than other places in the area, such as: petting and feeding the goat;, taking a look inside the goat-stables; an informational video; an outside terrace; and free-of-charge tasting of the cheeses sold in the shop. The place, at present, still lacks public facilities, such as a toilet - though I've been assured work is being invested to have these available by next year. The proprietors should also be commended about the clear COVID-19 instructions posted in all pertinent places. While all of this in itself might not sound too bad, the informational video is both long, boring and not particularly worthwhile (there's a program available that tells you the length of each segment, but not when it starts, and the style of presentation itself has more of a business presentation rather than a guided tour through the process of cheese manufacture); the goats are quite big, so scary for young children; the goats swallow the feed (available for purchase at €0.50 a cup), which therefore doesn't last long; you can't get any other food or drink at the terrace; and there's a long line in front of the shop - which made us forego buying some of the otherwise excellent cheese. Overall good for a brief visit, but rather a lot of effort to reach for the time you'll spend there...

(Translated by Google) A fun outing. Admission costs €3 without reservation, which includes a goat cheese tasting and the opportunity to feed the goats. It's advisable to keep small children close by during feeding, as the goats can be quite pushy. All explanations are in French, but I still found it worthwhile, provided you don't have to drive too far. (Original) Geinig uitje. (Translated by Google) I would have given it 5 stars, given the warm welcome we received from the staff. I'm not giving it 5 stars because the film shown in the goat barn contains too much cruelty to be shown to children. Aside from that, it is possible to milk the goats, pet them, and feed them. The owner provides very detailed and interesting explanations. Excellent cheese is sold on site! Must see if you like gardens. We never saw the same thing twice and were easily there a couple of hours, well wife likes gardens but i enjoyed it too! There's a vast variety of garden and pond areas to view and photograph. On arrival you will be encouraged to walk barefoot, so TAKE YOUR SANDELS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE THEM OFF. The grass areas were perfectly manicured and felt like carpet. It's really well looked after, but not cheap. We paid £10.00 per adult (Aug 2018).

Beautiful very well maintained garden! Must visit. The pathways are made of perfectly cut grass, on which you can walk bare-foot. Many different garden styles, including a maze! We spent hours here. The owner is happy to explain a thing or two about gardening, he speaks English. This place is not wheelchair or baby-stroller friendly. Use a baby-carrier instead.

Beautiful gardens. On entrance we were told we couldn't leave the bikes in the grounds and we couldn't have a picnic in the grounds (not that we'd intended to) We pay €90 a year for kew Gardens in London(300 acres) anytime secure space for bikes inside and we can have a picnic. The price here is too high for what you get. I've added photos of lack of bike parking and some lovely places that are perfect for a picnic even though you can't have one :)

Maison de la Tête de Moine

Museum
Cafe
Maison de la Tête de Moine is a must-visit for cheese enthusiasts and history buffs alike. This intriguing spot offers a warm welcome, good advice, and excellent Gin Fondue. The delicious Monks Heads are a highlight, and the recommended device with a brilliant lifetime guarantee is perfect for taking home in a small backpack. The building itself is an interesting example of local historical architecture, making it worth the visit for its cultural significance as well.
Went on a Sunday morning and it was not too crowded despite the bad weather. The museum is small but if you do it properly with the provided tablet, it’ll an hour with a 3 year old kid. Learned few things myself so it was quite interesting. You can taste and obviously purchase cheese and accessories, which we did!

Dina H — Google review
CHF 6.- entry fee. Small museum, no live demo how to make cheese. A free tasting of cheese included of their much talked about cheese flower would have made a big difference as talking about food is like talking about music. It overall was a bit disappointing.
Stephan B — Google review
This is the place where the original cheese Tête de Moine is produced. There is a rich choice of this and other cheeses in their shop selling an excellent assortment of regional products and where you can sip a glass or have a small bite in- or outside. Just nearby there is the possibility to educate yourself and your children in the life of dragonflies along an organized path. If you don't have the courage to look for these insects you can admire the giant hay statues set up each year in front of the main building.

Nice experience, very nice and helpfull employees. The museum and the actual mines are 3 km apart. The map at the site is a bit confusing so some extra signs would be good. At the site there is a bit of hiking to do, on some areas the terrain is abrupt and rocky or with stairs.

A Misty Day's Adventure at Le Thillot Copper Mine Despite visiting the Copper mine at Le Thillot on a dreary, wet day in April, the experience was unexpectedly mesmerizing. The misty weather lent a mystical aura to the moss-covered landscapes, transforming our surroundings into something out of a fairy tale. The highlight of our visit was certainly the guided tour with Fabien through the mine's longest tunnel. Lasting over an hour, the tour was not only extensive but also incredibly engaging, filled with rich details and fascinating stories that brought the history of the mine to life. Fabien’s charismatic, humorous manner, coupled with his deep knowledge of history, captivated us from the start. Adding to the mystical experience were the bats we spotted hibernating within the mine, a unique and memorable sight. The written guide was meticulous and available in German, a thoughtful touch that enhanced our understanding and appreciation of the site. Unfortunately, due to time constraints and our late arrival, we were unable to visit the mine’s museum on the same day. However, the staff were wonderfully understanding and assured us that our tickets would remain valid for entry to the museum the following day. By the end of our visit, we were truly humbled by the rich history and intricate processes of the Le Thillot Copper Mine. And let me just say, with copper all around us, it's easy to "take it for granite." :) Overall, the visit to Le Thillot Copper Mine was well worth the 15 euros, turning what could have been a gloomy day into an extraordinary adventure. I highly recommend this insightful and unique experience! Enjoy & GLÜCK AUF! The Gooners ;-)

Very nice trip back in history. These 400 year old copper mines are very nice to visit. There is a visitors center with a museum where you can learn about mining. A few kilometres further by car is the mining area where you can visit several mine shafts. I can highly recommend the guided tour in shaft 15. You need good shoes and you should be afraid for small and dark area's. They supply a helmet with a light on it to you. We had a very enthusiastic and nice guide explaining how the miners made the tunnels, cope with the water inside the tunnels and teached us about the copper mining. Als her English was very good, so compliments to the guide. After this we spend about 1 hour over the copper area to visit several small tunnels and hotspots. Was a nice walk in a green and beautiful area. I definitely recommend to do this €11,- trip (for 1 adult, including museum, guided tour and walk through the copper mine area)

Very nice place to visit in the Vosges. It is great that there is a mix of things to do: the museum has a lot of background information and cool archaeological findings, while the "discovery tour" allows for learning about the premises at own pace. Actually entering the mine can only be described as fantastic. Thanks to the lovely, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic guide we were made aware of the rich history hidden in the old mine shafts. Bring some warm clothes! For small children it might be a bit too cold and difficult to understand, but for older kids and grownups it is a great afternoon out.
Rosanne — Google review
Even though we made a reservation we had to wait almost an hour in the visitor center. Except for that it was pretty good. The tour trough the mine was interesting. Although the guide did not speak a lot of English. The mine itself is very cramped just like it was when it was in use and that was nice. It felt very real. The area around the mine has some interesting stuff and the leaflet gave some nice information. The museum was also surprisingly nice.

This architectural marvel dates back to the 13th century and is dedicated to Saint Christopher, the patron saint of travelers. The cathedral's design stands out among other Gothic churches in Europe, making it a must-visit for architecture enthusiasts. Its intricate filigree work and restoration at the highest level are truly impressive.
A wonderful church which is truly one of the symbols of this city. The church is in perfect harmony with the citadel that hangs over the city and guards it. Unfortunately this time we could not get inside, but what we saw from the outside made a stunning impression on us. P.S. Lovely building and you won't be disappointed with the view inside. I was especially struck by the filigree work of metal craftsmen. Amazing pictures! Restoration work carried out at the highest level. Definitely, this church is a must-see in the city.

(Translated by Google) Located in the heart of the old town, Saint-Christophe Cathedral is an imposing building, built in the 18th century in a sober classical style. Its massive façade of pink Vosges sandstone immediately catches the eye and gives a real identity to the historic center of Belfort. The interior is surprisingly bright and balanced. The nave is wide and light, with beautiful volumes. The stained-glass windows and organ are worth a closer look, as are some of the sculpted details that bear witness to the craftsmanship of the time. It is not an "exuberant" cathedral like those found elsewhere, but its simplicity gives it a certain elegance. It is also a vibrant place: concerts, services, and tours take place here, and it remains a central landmark in the city. Easily accessible while strolling through old Belfort, it perfectly complements a visit to the Lion and the fortifications.

Gorgeous hike. Not suitable for little kids though.

Brilliant walking with lots of interesting bits to keep kids walking! For those who may be dragging unwilling children up, the 'interesting stuff' (i.e. boardwalks, gorge, stone steps, waterfall, cave etc) starts about 1.8km from the car park at the bottom (we parked at the one at the south end of Môtiers). The walk from the car park to the top of the gorge and back took us 3.5 hours with primary aged children. It would be most impressive in early spring, I reckon, with the snowmelt coming down it. In August, there was no water in the lower river, and only a gently flowing stream through the gorge itself, but enough to still be worth the walk!

It is probably the most beautiful cayon in the region. A demanding Trek, but very rewarding. Very steep.

(Translated by Google) There are very strange canyons and streams, and some dangerous steps and paths. Be sure to tighten the iron chains on the stone cliffs and pay attention to safety. It's fun if you're a bit adventurous, but children and the elderly should be careful. In particular, wet stone roads can be slippery, so wear hiking shoes with anti-slip bottoms. Worth a visit. (Translated by Google) Very nice hike, not very busy on this Friday. The somewhat narrow passages are very beautiful and there is something to hold on to. We follow the water all the way. It's a bit of a climb but it's worth it! (Original) Très belle randonnée, peu fréquentée en ce vendredi. Les passages un peu étroits sont très beaux et il y a de quoi se tenir. On suit l’eau tout du long. Ça grimpe un peu mais ça vaut le coup !

(Translated by Google) Magnificent haven of peace for lovers of gardens, Japan, serenity and nature. You can relax there for the afternoon, after a hike, or take a relaxing break and you can stay there to completely get away from it all. Dogs are welcome. Bring change or a checkbook. Glacières de Sylans

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Glacières de Sylans is a historical site with a fascinating industrial heritage located in Ain, France. Dating back to the 19th century, it was once one of the most significant ice production facilities in the country, churning out up to 300,000 tons of ice annually. The remnants of this thriving industry can still be explored today through an open and free visit throughout the year.
Nice place to visit!

Nice place to stop by on a road trip There're public toilets but no place to buy food or drinks. We did not see signs for the parking lot, so we found it after a while but worth it.

It's our stop point from Geneva to Nantua. The scene is so magnificent! The place was old factory for ice storage during winter, but now it's abandoned now.
Winson L — Google review
Very beautiful place if you are passing through on the highway. Completely free to visit and you get stunning views and interesting history
Anna O — Google review
The ruined site of a one-time prosperous and important ice harvesting and storage facility that fell out of favour and into disrepair following the invention of the refrigerator is a must-see. There are information boards in both French and English that explain the process and the history - and which detail the hard life of the workers; as well as a series of atmospheric photographs taken inside the vast building (which for safety reasons is out of bounds to visitors). Steep wooden steps and a boardwalk take you down to the lake (chosen for the job because the purity of its water meant it froze at higher temperatures) and there's a gravel track on the other side of the building accessed more easily from the car park (where there's also a dry toilet). It's free to enter.
Jenny D — Google review
Remote and quiet (apart from the highway next door), not much to do there, but nice place nonetheless. There's a possibility to walk on the ice if the winter is good enough

Nice place for a little stop, picnic
Tiago R — Google review
Really interesting place to visit with great views around into the old ice storage facility. The building is decaying in a very fascinating way, with trees growing out of the roof. The setting by lake is lovely.
