Essen

Essen is a city in western Germany. Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex has been transformed to house several museums. Art Museums
Museum Folkwang, located in Essen, is a renowned cultural institution that boasts an extensive collection of European art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Originally founded in Hagen in 1902, the museum moved to Essen in 1921 and has since expanded its collection to include masterpieces by prominent artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, Kandinsky, and Klee.
A well maintained and beautiful public museum. Apart from the permanent exhibition, there was also "Frau in blau" temporary exhibition. The highlight is Van Gogh's paintings kept in the permanent exhibition.
Prathmesh W — Google review
Enjoyable experience of modern art (the 1860s to the 1970s) with informative notes. Includes Dali, Magritte, Van Gogh among many others. I particularly liked various installations. A leisurely stroll through the exhibits took me about two hours, but I can imagine spending more time in this museum, especially because the photo collection was closed at the time of my visit. The main collection is open for free. There is a café-restaurant on the terrace next to the museum. The museum shop has gifts and a lot, a whole library worth of art books. There is also an actual library (reading room) to sit and study art books.
Natalia P — Google review
Te permanent exhibition is free. You can find art from Andy Warhol, Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Mondrian, etc. And many contemporary artwork. If you want to visit the temporary expositions. You can buy your ticket in the entrance :) Also, the museum shop has interesting stuff to see or buy 🤩
Gicela C — Google review
I love this place. The William Kentridge exhibition was exceptional, but the collections hold some gems too (Matisse, Gauguin, Nam Yune Paik, Rodin, Mondriaan) and well curated. We came with our 6 year old who’s not very interrested in art and still spent 3 hours! The museum shop has a great book selection.
Minke H — Google review
Architecturally the building is amazing. The permanente collection is overall pretty good, has quite a few contemporary masters and some interesting minors particularly from the Neue Sachlichkeit and I did not pay. But really need a curatorial overhaul, thematic rooms are maybe good for kids, not for a thinking adult. In particular if the themes are so abstract and the paintings do not speak with each other. Also you can’t put Braque and Picasso right beside a festival poster. I found very interesting & cool the scoring system for paintings’ provenance during WWII, to rank how clear or murky their history was. I wish the same would be done for the “exotic” pieces they have but I guess we would see a lot of red dots. The staff were incredibly friendly and the temporary exhibition was interesting and well curated.

Very nice museum. Free to visit except for the temporary exhibitions.

Their permanent collection is pretty amazing. You can see some artwork from Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali and many more. It’s free entry except the temporary exhibitions.

A great museum with a great collection of modern and contemporary art. Architecture of the building is also amazing. You would need 2-3h for a proper visit.

Villa
Sights & Landmarks
Villa Hügel is a significant part of Essen's architectural heritage and represents the prosperous industrialization of the Ruhr region. Constructed in the late 19th century by Alfred Krupp, this opulent 269-room mansion sits on a vast 20-hectare estate overlooking the Ruhr. The Neoclassical design reflects elegance and modernity, boasting innovative features ahead of its time. Visitors can explore its ornate interiors and stroll through the expansive parkland.
⭐To avoid being shut out after driving over, or like us, after a long transit and much walking, check the kalendar on Villa Hügel’s own website. 🍉Click into the individual dates. The opening hours are quite irregular. ⭐Wear comfortable shoes. Much walking and much standing around to read the history on the wall made my legs leaden. In a rewarding way, sure. But very much exhausted:-) ⭐No sit-down indoor cafe on the premise. Just an outdoor food trailer. This made our visit even more physically challenging. I would’ve been okay with the trailer food and sitting outside on a bench to eat. But neither trailor food nor sitting in the chill wind was my mother-in-law’s idea of relaxation. So we stayed as long as we physically could and left for bio fuel. ⭐The place is stunning. The opulence starts only when you step in. The exterior is quite pared down. Geometry, woodwork and visual illusions make the spaces interesting. The usual symbolism of western civilizations is everywhere. ⭐Appreciation of the historic value of architectural and textual archive is not endorsement of everything the Krupp family did. Just so we are clear.

Villa Hügel is an impressive testament to German engineering. The architecture and historical significance as the Krupp family residence are fascinating. A must-visit for anyone interested in technology and history!
André V — Google review
A stunning and peaceful place filled with history. Once home to the Krupp family, Villa Hügel impresses with its elegant architecture, grand halls, and beautiful parkland. The exhibitions are well curated and give a deep insight into Germany’s industrial past. A must-visit if you're in the Ruhr area! Amazing place
Armel G — Google review
I would give it a lower rating because there are no explanations in English in the museum, just a small leaflet at the entrance. You also have an app with AR, but only in German, but luckily, I got information beforehand on the internet and I use technology so I can get by, but as a museum, at least add explanations in English for tourists? This is a problem with many German museums. Anyway, the residence and the museum itself are magnificent. The staff is friendly, the park is beautiful. I also watched the TV series about the Krupps, so it was nice to see this in live. A truly magical place. I love history and historical sites and enjoy exploring them around Germany, but many institutions don't seem to care about tourists.
Sandra P — Google review
It was nice to visit the residence of this old timey Jeffrey Bezos, the villa and the garden are beautiful. English translations were missing in the exhibitions and most staff were rude - a number of times they shouted at me or my son in German. You can’t get anything to eat except for fries (nice but not fresh) and bratwurst that was very low quality.
Minke H — Google review
This is one of the amazing places in Essen to visit. A beautiful historical building featuring rich pieces of history. The architecture and design are quite unique and breathtaking, making it very worthwhile to spend as much time going to the many various rooms and seeing artwork, classic furniture and many more. The park around the villa is also quite amazing to walk around and take a nice relaxing stroll. There is an entrance fee to the villa but it is very affordable and I would recommend a visit to this historical house. The place is on the other side of the S-Bahn station of Essen-Hügel, and there are signs to get to the villa, so you can’t really miss this fantastic sight.
Phil T — Google review
An amazing home to visit and look around. The grounds around the home are stunning!!
Jim B — Google review
Großeshaus was closed. I only visited the Kleineshaus which is the museum. Museum has only German subtitles which was dissappointing. Museum has 2 floors and the inside is all about the Krupp Family and how they grew their business, their effects on war, their products etc. There is a big garden where you can walk around and enjoy the clean air. The Villa is close to the Baldeneysee and the Hügel Station.

Park
Amusement park
Grugapark Essen is not your average city park. It's a sprawling green oasis with a variety of attractions to enjoy. The park features a petting zoo, botanical gardens, barbecue areas, an aviary, and sports facilities. Its botanical garden is the main highlight, showcasing a pyramid-shaped tropical house, an alpine garden with a waterfall, Westphalian farmers' garden, rose garden, forest valley with bonsai trees, and rhododendron garden.
Relaxing and exciting at the same time. I’d love to highlight my favorite elements and aspects. 3 elements: 1) The waterfall. You can get really up close and still be safe. A win win. 2) The Geological Wall. Rock strata, coal mines, seams and seismic shifts. 15 meters wide and created around a century ago. Wow. Absolutely amazing and touching. 3) The Mendel flower bed of hereditary tree. Such clarity. Adorable. 3 aspects: 1) The park is dotted with humorous sculptures. 2) The park balances vast open spaces with intimate and shaded nooks. 3) The park is culturally diverse. It incorporates aesthetic ideals from around the world and different eras in time. Fans of bees, don’t miss the bee house where you can buy organic skincare products, from soaps to creams. Candles are available, too. And the cutest bee fluffies (stuffed animals)!
Handan B — Google review
A great place for picnics and sunbathing. The children can also have plenty of fun in the park. If you're a student, don't forget to ask for a discount at the counter.
Prathmesh W — Google review
Pretty views most definitely!! There is one con however that absolutely took this review from 5 to 3 starts, and thats the treatment of the birds. It is very obvious that they aren’t fed well because they’re all either sick or want no interaction with humans at all. It was such a horror scene seeing featherless birds on display. Besides that the views were wonderful and I had a nice time.
Minatullah H — Google review
This is my favorite park in the world!! It’s HUGE, beautiful, and ever changing. I look forward to going back every time I leave.
Blue S — Google review
Definitely one of the best parks in Essen. There is 5 euro entry fee but the park is so big that you can spend an entire day there. Its ideal for family picnics.
Alveena M — Google review
I love this park so much. it holds little wonder . The nature here soothes the soul and body. This park consist of surprises and a good day like today was the best time for me and my family to be there, we had bunch of fun, the kids had the space to run and scream as much and on top of their voices. Everything was fine and our day was almost ending well until we discovered this part of the park where the birds are, precisely the huge enclosed place for he flamingoes and the other birds. This place really attracted us all, so we rushed in and my niece who had a ball in her hand mistakenly dropped the ball and it rolled in the pond, which i quickly dashed to fetch it immediately. In about 1 min after this, an older man who was dressed in a duty uniform who i guessed worked there and actually confirmed he works there approached us in front of these kids warned us in a hash manner while visitors stood and watched in silence. I mean, i rushed for this ball and quickly dropped it in our wagon(wagen in deutsch) so the kids don’t throw it back in the pond. But this man had the gut to be disrespectful and inconsiderate. He even dared to tell us if it happens again he would have to walk us out of the place. So i told him if he really noticed, i reached to get the ball that quick so where was the problem and why the need for all that warnings and unfriendliness. My sister was very sad and angry because after this tensed moment beside us stood a family I will guess were pure natives(Germans) with their son also standing close to the water the little boy was even at some point dipping his feet in the water, this man went to them played jokingly with their little son and smiled laughed with this family. He left us feeling not accepted. I took my family immediately out, then i went back in there to confront this man again, and when i got there he was sitting with another older woman also in the same uniform. So i told this man what he did back there was a no go and he could have approached us the right way. Maybe he could have even also jokingly tell my niece why it won’t be good idea to let the ball in the water. I mean she is even a kid for god sake, I would not say he treated us because of our skin color but that’s how it looked like. Out of almost 40 people visiting, it was only one visitor who came to my defense. He said he witnessed everything and also told this older guy he was wrong. I felt a bit relieved and left the place. I am disappointed! We are all humans why can’t we be genuinely humans? I will post pictures of this unforgettable moment. I still rate Grugapark but train your workers to be diversity inclusive. I won’t pay money for anything to just mess with my day again never. (17.08.2025 at 16: 52 )

This is a fantastic, spacious park for families. There's so much to do for an entire day—not just walking, but plenty of activities for both kids and adults. Be sure to bring cash, as they don't accept debit cards, despite some entrance gates reportedly accepting card payments.

Such a big and beautiful park! I was impressed by the amount of activities you can do there, all of the courts, children playgrounds, barbecue spots, flowers areas! There’s so many things to see and explore:) There’s an animal park and it’s free but it’s available from 10-17 if I remember correctly, you can feed them:) and there’s a swimming pool area, but you have to pay additional fees. We bought year ticket and it’s about thirty euros, but normal entry costs five euro per adult and three per student. There also some little cafeterias and toilets for free:)

Specialty Museums
The Red Dot Design Museum, located in a building redesigned by Norman Foster, showcases the finest contemporary product designs from around the world. Situated within the Zollverein Complex, it celebrates industrial design breakthroughs and houses over 1,000 products that have received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award. The museum is dedicated to excellence in design, functionality, and innovation. It has been recognized as one of the top design museums globally and features everyday items that have become iconic due to their exemplary designs.
The Red Dot Design Museum is a fantastic spot for design lovers! The exhibits showcase award-winning products and innovative concepts from all over the world, from clever everyday items to visionary designs. The museum’s industrial-chic setting complements the modern displays and adds to the experience. I’d recommend giving yourself about 2 hours to really take it all in—you’ll want to explore each piece. One thing that could be improved is the signage; it was a bit hard to find the entrance, so clearer directions would help. Also, while the museum shop is decent, it didn’t quite live up to the creativity of the exhibits—could be a bit more exciting. Overall, though, the Red Dot Design Museum is a unique and inspiring visit for anyone curious about the world of design
Charlotte B — Google review
The Red Dot Design Museum in Essen is a hidden gem, especially if you love design, creativity, or just seeing cool stuff. It’s located in a former coal mine, which gives it this incredible mix of industrial history and cutting-edge innovation—a great setting for showcasing award-winning designs. From Apple and Nintendo’s evolution to kitchen gadgets you never think twice about, the museum makes you realize how much thought goes into everyday objects. The best part? You can actually touch and test out many of the exhibits! I had way too much fun spinning in a designer chair and checking out futuristic furniture. What I was missing was a bit more explanation added to the displays or maybe one sentence fun facts on why this design is special - sometimes it was difficult to know without googling what I was looking up or why should I care. Oh, and if you’re on a budget—Fridays are “Pay As Much As You Want” days! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Anja F — Google review
I will start by saying that the Red Dot museum IS worth visiting. However….some feedback and notes for fellow visitors. Though there are some cool state of the art or certainly interesting items, I’m sorry but a “control system” or “car part” does not engage (key word of the day…) or inform me what in Earth it is for, good for them for earning a “design award”. A few videos are more helpful but besides being able to touch some things and sit on some chairs, for things to either be functional or actually explained! Also, for some of the items that can be “tried”, it’d actually be nice to be able to leave feedback on their design or functionality because I’d certainly never buy a modern Chinese fridge that’s impossible to open. Maybe some things are already out for sale in Beijing or Finland but a lot does not leave a wow impression from having plainly seen it at the museum. The cashier is friendly and knowledgeable, and I’m not saying the museum has to sell its soul to the corporations making these products, the wow factor should be the premises of finding out what innovation is
Eki, : — Google review
Design heaven inside a former powerhouse! The Red Dot Design Museum blends cutting-edge modern design with the raw industrial charm of the Zollverein Coal Mine Complex. Every corner showcases innovative products, from everyday gadgets to futuristic concepts, all winners of the prestigious Red Dot Award. The building itself is a work of art — a perfect backdrop for creativity. Whether you’re a design professional or just curious, it’s an inspiring, hands-on experience you won’t forget.

Awesome awesome awesome. Loved this place, and some super cool items on display. Definite must visit.
Neil R — Google review
That's fantastic place for everyone who is interested in art, design and industrial architecture. I've visited it multiple times and will definitely visit again. Surrounding area is quite vast so prepare yourself for long walk if you want to explore entire complex.
Robert K — Google review
It's fun.... But I also found myself asking, (as a designer), "why did [this] win a design award?". As many of the products did not take into account usability at all. Washing machines that hurt my hands to open (and would be near impossible for those with large hands), designs that were unintuitive to figure out. It seemed more like awards for aesthetic beauty-- rather than innovative, functional or overall good designs (which I expected).

Lake
Baldeneysee, located in the city of Essen, Germany, is a picturesque reservoir along the Ruhr river that offers a variety of activities. Visitors can enjoy sailing, swimming, and other water sports on the lake or take boat tours to explore its scenic surroundings. The area is also home to diverse wildlife such as kingfishers, cormorants, and turtles in the Ruhr wetlands.
Right near Villa Hügel, this next best place is a must see if you are visiting Essen on a day trip. Either before or after a visit to the Villa, it doesn’t matter which time of the day you go, it is an amazing sight. However, if you want to see the seaside beach next to the Baldeneysee, it is recommended to go in the late afternoon or evening, or check when the beach is open. Either way, this nice spot is great for pics, vids, panoramas, etc and going for a stroll, then going to one of the cafes along the lake. You can do sailing and other types of water sports here, which makes it a fun place for everyone to enjoy.

It's a beautiful lake in Essen where you get an extremly colorful views on a bright sunny day. It seems to be a famous spot for water sports. We did our hiking and covered almost 9 10 km path. In total, the track is around 27 km so it is quite a big lake. There are a lot of things which can be interesting for people with a varied level of interests such as biking, hiking, water sports, photography etc. A beach area is also present but it is a commercial one for which one has to pay.

Casino Zollverein offers a wide range of dining options within the Welterbe Zollverein complex, catering to various tastes and occasions. The restaurant presents innovative culinary art in an industrial setting, providing a unique dining experience. Additionally, it serves as an ideal location for private or corporate events. On Sundays, Casino Zollverein hosts a lavish brunch buffet featuring carefully curated dishes of the highest quality.
If you are looking for a special restaurant in Essen, the Casino Zollverein is doubtless a great choice. The atmosphere is unique. The service was remarkably good. Attentive, quick and here and there with additional information about the food or the wine. The food was very tasty. The ingredients are high quality; you can taste that. However, I felt it could have needed a little more salt and seasoning. But that's no reason to deduct points. We had a great evening. Thank you very much!

Lovely atmosphere, great service & food! All the food taste was excellent. Restaurant was expensive though. Food was tasty and healthy. This place is a unique and for this reason it’s perfect for special occasions or celebrations. Recommended for dinner compared to lunch. Location is around 15-20 minutes by tram from the Essen Central Station ( Straßenbahn Essen: 107). Tram station is very nearby.

We have orderd candle night dinner because of my Hausband birthday and it was perfekt. Although we eat no pork, there was possible to have meat menu with other meat possibilities. All contents were chosen professionally and each plate was were well designed and tasted very delicious. All vegetables and other cooked contents were fresh. 3 different waiters served our dinner menu. One of them with glasses which I can not remember his name was really professional, emotional and friendly. Two others brought our drinks and food without explanation about name and contents. It seems that they were Barman and not food waiters. I recommend this place and their suprise menu for special occasion like anniversary, birthday and so on. I have 2 recommends for restaurants: 1. a good Music makes this place more attractive and 2. the dessert needs also a drink to serve. Like caffee or something like that. They bring drink beside starter and main menu, but for desert unfortunately nothing.

At The ASH Essen, dining transforms into a communal celebration where food and drink come together in an inviting atmosphere. Whether you're with a large group or enjoying an intimate meal, you can indulge in top-notch dishes ranging from succulent steaks and burgers to delightful vegetarian options. After your meal, unwind at the cocktail bar while grooving to some cool tunes. Located conveniently near the main train station, this urban eatery offers a cozy yet vibrant setting for all occasions.
I regularly visit but whoever made my T-bone on the 26.07.2025 around 9pm, you deserve a gold medal, the best I have ever had. Delicious dessert. Wide variety from starter to dessert to drinks. Friendly and good service. Love sitting inside, outside is slightly busy for me, it’s in the city but in a calmer place. Paid Parking on the street is available about 25-50 meters from the restaurant.
Kiitumetsi N — Google review
Lovely setting and a good steak (missed some oomph and charcoal taste, tbh). Decent (not awesome) options of cuts. The house red wine is very good. The desserts are also good. On the plus side, they're open until 10pm (kitchen included!), which is an ideal option for hungry travellers!

Steaks were insanely good, but still a very disappointing experience because of 1 waiter: The gentleman with glasses that was mostly serving outside, was very hasty. We both wanted to order the same thing, so my girlfriend let me say it. This man didn’t want to hear it, turned his back to me and only wanted to listen to my girlfriend. When she was ordering, he would litteraly get irritated if she didn’t answer within 2 seconds. After, when paying, he got angry when i didn’t tip because of his rude way of taking orders. Very very unprofessional. I’m sorry to the owners of the restaurant for this review, but I had to speak my mind.

Newly opened restaurant. Good quality meat. Ambiance is very nice. Lots of space inside. So tables aren't crammed next to each other. Dessert was lovely. Especially the hot applecrumble. There is seating inside, upstairs and outside at the terrace.

What a disaster. Our group of 80 people had agreed on a fixed menu months in advance, with an average price of €22 per dish. But what we got was far from that... I waited 1.5 hours for my meal—and I was lucky, because others had to wait even longer! On top of that, there was only one vegetarian option. Then came the bill. Not only were we charged for tap water we never ordered, but sides like potatoes and gravy suddenly turned out to be extra. We ended up paying at least €8 more per person, which adds up to over €600 in outright rip-off! And as if that wasn’t bad enough, there were items on our bill that we never ordered. To make matters worse, the cashier was completely incompetent. My order had to be re-entered three times, as if she didn’t know what she was doing. It all felt very suspicious, like I was being forced to pay without anything actually being deducted from the bill. And the cherry on top? The next day, multiple people in our group suffered from stomach problems. Apparently, food hygiene is not a priority here. This restaurant is a DISGRACE. Deceptive practices, terrible service, and possibly unsafe food. Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else!

Restaurant Tablo offers a diverse Turkish menu with beautifully presented meze platters, lamb and fish specialties, and a wide selection of wines including Turkish varieties. The elegant dining room provides a communicative dining experience at long communal tables or smaller round ones. Guests praise the perfect service and lovely ambiance, while enjoying delicious appetizer platters and fresh fish paired with excellent Turkish rose wine and local beer. However, some note that the noise level can be high depending on the number of guests.
Magical spot in Essen. Close to the main train station, this restaurant has exceptional quality and service. The fish is fresh, the lamb outstanding and the starters out of this world. The staff is kind and goes above and beyond to help an untrained german speaker as myself to have a great experience. Super recommended.

Excellent food without any doubt. Simply fresh and delicious. Staff are very friendly of course. However the kitchen seemed to have trouble keeping up to pace although the restaurant was only half full. Had to wait almost an hour for the main meal

One of the worst dining experiences. Fish is slightly below average. Chicken for my daughter was bone dry and hard like rock, she can’t even swallow it. Very small portion, portion for side dish is a joke. Fine dining price, but food is a huge disappointment. 100% overpriced! Dorade is the cheapest fish on the menu with 30 euro. Other fish like Steinbut or Loup de mar costs 40 to 50 euro. The average price of main course is over 40 euro. We have 5 people including one kid, none of us were satisfied. The management concept is a total rip off. The only highlight was the bread serving at the beginning and the decoration of the restaurant.

The cuisine surprises with sophistication - classic French flavors are combined with ingenious taste and tactile twists. Every bite is a small experience. What is particularly impressive is the attention to detail, which is evident in both the presentation and the composition of the dishes. The ambience is charming and inviting, a successful mix of French elegance and a cozy bistro atmosphere. A place where you can embark on culinary adventures and be surprised again and again. Highly recommended for anyone who loves French cuisine and is looking for that certain something. Sometimes you have to search for a long time, but sometimes you can find little gems through newspaper articles, just like La Petite Cave de Jeannette. In the city that promises a lot from its name (food), the restaurant "La Petite Cave de Jeannette" is somewhat hidden between residential buildings. The small but very fine menu, which changes weekly, does not offer many, but unusual dishes with a lot of French charm, even though you are many, hundreds of kilometers away from France. We were offered a great, individual menu and we didn't have to look long for the right wines. The service was very attentive and we were very well looked after. We would love to come back here! Uns wurde ein tolles, individuelles Menü geboten und auch die passenden Weine mussten wir nicht lange suchen. Der Service war sehr aufmerksam und wir wurden sehr gut umsorgt. One of the nicest experiences I have ever had. From the moment you walk in, you are treated like royalty. All the members of the staff are extremely polite and professional. They pay extreme attention to detail and they will make your experience one of a kind. You really feel appreciated as a guest. The food was AMAZING, however it is to be expected taking into consideration the prices. Feel free to spend a little bit more than your initial budget and it will be well worth it. the different tastes coming together very well. The food arrived quickly, and you won't have to wait in between the dishes. Quality and prices are justified. Expect to pay ~120-150€ per person (including the tip). Again, it's WORTH IT.

This was a fantastic experience! We were given lots of personal attention, and we really felt appreciated as guests. The food was literally amazing, the different tastes coming together very well. Our favorites were the king prawns starter, the St. Peter's fish main course (especially the amazingly delicious mushrooms in that dish!!), and the creme brulee dessert. The food arrived quickly, and we weren't kept waiting too long between dishes. There was a wedding happening at the same time in another part of the restaurant, but we didn't feel negatively affected by that--apparently, the staff could handle the wedding as well as the rest of the guests rather well. We sat outside and had a breath-taking view of the lake. We felt like the price of the meal was justified given the quality of the food and the service we received. It was truly a fantastic evening and a great culinary experience!
