Besancon

Besançon is a city in eastern France, near the border with Switzerland. The old city center lies in a horseshoe bend on the Doubs River. The sprawling Citadel of Besançon perches on a hill and is home to 3 museums, a zoo and 600m-long ramparts. At the foot of the hill, Besançon Cathedral has a unique 70-dial astronomical clock that indicates sunrise and sunset, eclipses, and tides in French ports.

Besançon Citadel is a 17th-century fortress designed by Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban, located on Mount Saint-Etienne in eastern France. The well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Doubs River and nearby villages. It features imposing ramparts and towers, as well as a French resistance museum.
Very nice to visit. Prepare your feet if you go by walking. There is also a bus and a little train. Panorama is simply marvelous, and the exhibitions are nice. There monkeys at the entrance having sometime good fight between them.

If you have a car, do drive up as there is parking. The ramparts are quite spectacular as is the citadel. The views are amazing. There are several museums within though I wasn’t impressed. No matter, it’s still worth it.
Sophie C — Google review
Great place, one ticket for heaps of different things. Definitely worth a visit for the whole family.
Everyonecantravel2024 Y — Google review
Not particularly beautiful but impressive still. The citadel is rich in history, fun for all ages with its animals, fort walls and numerous museums. Do not go on the walls if it is thundering, it will be dangerous. I recommend it if you are in the area.
Sollxbx — Google review
The fortress of Besançon is a must. Some areas can be visited for free but the visit is worth the entrance fees (views, museums, zoo, restaurant)
Barefoot C — Google review
A fantastic place to spend an afternoon! Google indicated that it would be closed on the Thursday before Easter but the website said it would be open so always check there. Every ticket person or office warned me about it closing in an hour (we arrived at 4pm) but this was enough time for me and my 4 year old to go around the ramparts and see an extensive amount. Love the fact that there's a zoo inside... What a brilliant use of such a big walled space! The wooden snake art installation was also great.
Natalya M — Google review
An unprepared visit turned out as a nice activity with the children. We were a bit late so we could not visit everything but we focused on the animals. It was a nice surprise to discover the Citadel has been re-invented as a zoo. We saw some unknown species that I had not seen before, especially some wonderfully colored frogs.
Henk V — Google review
Built, as it should be, on the top of a mountain, this citadel is an excellent example of military construction. Parking and bus stop is nearby. There are a couple of museums in the fortress, which, of course, I recommend visiting. There are also a couple of cafes to relax. Well, what especially surprised us and turned out to be very pleasant was the presence of a small zoo on the territory of the fortress. Here you can see tigers and lions and some other animals. And here there is a great opportunity to look from the fortress wall at the nearby surroundings. If you are in the city, be sure to visit this fortress.

The Museum of Times, located in a former palace with picturesque city views, displays the rich history of local watchmaking. This museum is a haven for history enthusiasts who can immerse themselves in the diverse collection of watches from different eras, almost like time travel. However, it might disappoint English-speaking visitors as explanations are only available in French. While the entry fee is reasonable at 5 units, admission may be free during certain times of the year.
Everything about watches and only about watches from the Middle Ages to quite perfect and modern models. If you have time and you will be in this city then you can visit this museum. Downstairs there is a cafe where you can drink wonderful coffee with cakes, that also look like clockwork.
Io L — Google review
When you’ve had enough of fine arts museums, this one is great. In a beautiful palace it displays tapestries, paintings and best of all time pieces and clocks.
Sophie C — Google review
Go to place for history lovers. As the name suggests, it’s a museum of times aka watches. You can see variety of watches from the past. It’s almost like a fun time travel experience. But there are no explanations in English only in french. And the entry fee of 5€ seems ok but I think depending on the season it’s free sometimes. I was a bit disappointed as the collection seems scattered. Nevertheless there are so many interesting watches to see. If you have time you can visit all the 3 floors. We were in a hurry so did not explore in detail.
Raj G — Google review
What a wonderful museum and a lovely giftshop.
Öykü A — Google review
Well worth a visit. Not a museum only about clocks or watches, but also some nice pieces of art.
Eduardo M — Google review
A beautiful museum about the watch making industry in Besancon. It has a lot of interesting watches from various centuries, some being truly incredible for their time. First two floors is only watches, while on the third floor you can find a huge layout of Besancon, and also the entrance in a tower from which you can see the whole city, with explanations for all the buildings.
Alex D — Google review
It's almost a time travel walking around the museum. Really good collection. For international travelers there should be English captions. Don't miss the souvenir store in the ground floor.

Amazing experience through...the time! Fantastic views and great diversity in the exposition, not only "time stuff".

Nestled in the heart of Besançon, the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Established in 1694, this unique museum boasts an impressive collection that spans from the Middle Ages to modern times, featuring masterpieces by renowned artists such as Goya, Picasso, and Courbet.
Very good regional museum with a variety of pieces from ancient Egypt to modern Impressionism. The building is in the old city center but completely modernized inside with a graphic open architecture. Unfortunately external visitors pay an extra tax compared to locals.
GentilDanseur G — Google review
Great archeological hall, beautifully displayed and presented, in French, English and German. I did not visit the rest of the museum as I came for the Roman mosaics. And the staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful I thoroughly recommend the placr

Great exhibits, well planned out and very varied displays like Ancient civilisations to contemporary Art.
Ailbe ( — Google review
The museum is much larger than expected and spent 3 hours walking around without noticing. The archeological portion was really fascinating and all exhibits were from the area. Huge collection of masterpieces and very informative descriptions with each. A must see.

Sebastian M — Google review
Nice museum for an hour or two of wandering through. Navigating through the museum was a bit confusing at times but mostly good. Wonderful history.
Calum K — Google review
Great architecture, the renovations they did were totally worth it. Loved the paintings they have in there. Specially Gigoux and Courbet, who were both renowned painters from Besançon. Will definitely go back for more.
Filsan A — Google review
Plenty to see and enjoy, free entry for the month of August. It's a great collection, I'd recommend planning for at least 2 hours if interested in both the art and archaeology. Downside: details about the contents of the display are only written in French (but general information about the eras also given in English and German)

French restaurant
Located at 10 Rue Pasteur, 25000 Besancon, France, Les Gamins is a charming and welcoming restaurant known for its warm atmosphere. Owned by Arnaud and Clotilde, the establishment offers a playful ambiance with a cuisine that delights the taste buds. The menu features delicious burgers and black angus picanha, as well as their popular desserts like caramel salted butter rice pudding.
I who has been countless restaurants all over France and Europe I must say this one was one of the best I ever been. Truly a gem.
Joel L — Google review
The food was nice, Champagne and red wine too warm, the plats were much too large, specially the iberian cochon. Had to leave the whole cotelette, ate already the big filet. Asked for a doggy bag and the answer was NO. Food waste at its best... ☹
Stephan S — Google review
We waited 15 minutes to receive the menu card, then 15 minutes to take the order and 40 minutes to receive the food. Not a Gaut Millot place at all. The restaurant was not even full .
Guglielmina M — Google review
A very well-kept and nicely decorated restaurant. The service is the real highlight. Some of our friends were late, but the reservation was honored and the kitchen extended the service especially for us. The dishes we ordered were truly excellent, but unfortunately the vegetarian options were not quite up to par. The wine list is extensive and very reasonably priced. We were treated very well, drank exceptional wines, the bill was more than fair, and we left the restaurant truly happy with our experience. Highly recommended!

Nestled in the charming city of Besançon, "Les 4 Saisons" is a culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. This delightful restaurant prides itself on serving fresh, locally-sourced dishes that are entirely homemade. Guests rave about the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by the passionate owners, who ensure every meal is served with a smile.
If you a searching for classical French cuisine that is homey and tastes nice look no further. The menu was only in French but the waitress spoke some English. The service was quick and efficient and they waited for us to finish our meal before closing the restaurant.

The dining experience at Brasserie Granvelle was truly delightful, with exceptional cuisine and an outstanding waitstaff, particularly the remarkable waitress Eva. The ambiance of the restaurant was superb, creating a wonderful atmosphere for diners. The menu featured simple yet high-quality regional dishes that were bursting with flavor. The restaurant's location, with its spacious terrace overlooking a park, added to its charm. The staff members were professional and accommodating, making the overall service efficient and enjoyable.
Busy, buzzy place with lovely relaxed atomsphere despite being ful on a wet Sunday nightl. Food and drinks were superb. Seemed well priced considering and good varied menu.

Really nice bar for drinks on a Sunday afternoon. Pleasant efficient service. But beware I was given an “old style” 20€ note in my change. I was not happy about this and it was exchanged immediately. I wonder why?

Simple regional food with exceptional quality and taste. Lovely setting with a large terrace by a park. Professional personnel.

Strange place. They left us waiting to be seated while other visitors just sat down to some free tables. After 10 minutes watching the scene and waiting a queue built up behind us. 5 staff members walked in and out without doing anything. We walked away from this place. One of the staff members seemed happy about it. I had the feeling staff hates to work there.

Cheese shop
Deli
La Cave aux Fromages is a family-run shop that has been serving cheese enthusiasts since 1850. Located in a bustling market square, this quaint and charming establishment offers an extensive selection of young and old comte cheeses, as well as a variety of wines, liqueurs, and gourmet treats from the Jura region. The friendly staff are knowledgeable and eager to assist customers in finding the perfect cheese or making recommendations based on individual preferences.
Very welcoming and really helpful. The comte they sell is delicious and we enjoyed trying and finding some new cheeses we hadn't had before
Liam C — Google review
Fair selection of deli products, some of which are local. Well-assorted wine section. Overpriced spirits (more then 15 percent of markup on some items) and sometimes stalled Comté (to be fair, a common problem with all vendors in Besançon historical center).
Alexander D — Google review
Great variety of local products, namely cheese as implied in the name. The staff is very kind and will help you find what you want or recommend something based on what tastes you are looking for. They also have wines to make it easy to pair and have some essential ingredients for a true French apero.

(Translated by Google) Honestly, what a disappointment… I went to La Cave aux Fromages to buy some local products, and I've never seen such disrespectful staff. I politely asked for information about a cheese, and the saleswoman replied in a haughty, almost mocking tone, as if I were bothering her. When I said I preferred to taste before buying, she sighed loudly in front of everyone… so professional. To top it all off: another customer dropped a piece of cheese, and instead of replacing it, the salesperson put it back on the shelf as if nothing had happened 🤢. Honestly, between the frosty atmosphere and the lack of hygiene, it's the first and last time I'll ever set foot in there. Avoid at all costs.

La Petite Adresse is a charming little bistro that captures the essence of traditional French cuisine, particularly highlighting the specialties of Franche-Comté. The atmosphere is warm and rustic, making it an inviting spot for diners looking to indulge in hearty meals. While the menu may be limited, each dish is homemade and generously portioned, ensuring a satisfying experience.
If you want to get a true local cuisine, then this is a place to go. Don't trust all grumpy reviews. You got to see and try it out. French people are always amazing with humor and hospitality. Recommending!
Dmitry L — Google review
The meal would've been far more enjoyable if I hadn't had one of the most unpleasant tables on my trip so far. The owner seems to have crammed as many tables as humanly possible in a relatively small space and mine was particularly cramped as it was sandwiched between a wall and the bar. The place was packed and every single person going to the bathroom knocked into me, and the music from the bar was blaring in my ear the whole time. I had the pate for appetizer and the quenelles as a main course which I can't evaluate because I've never had it before. It was OK, but I wouldn't order it again. The pate was quite good. The table was so uncomfortable. I couldn't wait to get out which is a shame. The owner was acceptably attentive. If you go, try to ask for a better table ahead of time.
