Wurzburg

Würzburg is a city in Germany's Bavaria region. It's known for lavish baroque and rococo architecture, particularly the 18th-century Residenz palace, with ornate rooms, a huge fresco by Venetian artist Tiepolo and an elaborate staircase. Home to numerous wine bars, cellars and wineries, Würzburg is the center of the Franconian wine country, with its distinctive bocksbeutel (bottles with flattened round shapes).

Fortress
Museums
Perched on a hillside overlooking the Main River, Marienberg Fortress is a reconstructed 13th-century stronghold that houses art and history museums. The fortress has a rich history dating back to a Celtic fortification in the 1st century BC and offers insights into the region's past through extensive collections of artifacts at the Main Franconian Museum. Visitors can also explore formal terrace gardens while enjoying stunning views of Wurzburg from this strategic vantage point.
Nice castle on the hill. Amazing panoramic views to Wurcburg city. Nice calm walking trays. There is a bus no.9 going down the hill.

One of the best strolls in the area : crossing the bridge and leisurely walking up to the fortress in the midst of vineyards. Strongly recommended the castle tour and enjoying the view from the top gardens.
Tony B — Google review
I’ve hiked to the fortress crossing Alte Mianbrucke bridge and going gradually on Zeller Strabe and via chain of town gardens culminating in ascent to back entrance of Marienberg Fortress (with benefit of sightseeing much more than the forest). Given limited amount of time, I have not chosen interior tour, but full loop around the fortress afforded beautiful town and nature views. Returning back to the town via main entrance to the forest was quick and easy descent.
Mike Z — Google review
Worth a visit, even while renovations are underway. At the moment the main part of the fortress isn't accessible, but the museum is still well worth the ttrip. If using public transportation, take the #9 line to get as close to the main entrance as possible.
Nathan V — Google review
The Marienberg Fortress offers a fantastic view over Würzburg and looks beautiful from the outside. Unfortunately, there is currently a lot of construction work going on, so a large part of the area couldn’t be visited. We only stayed outside and didn’t go inside, so I can’t comment on the interior. The parking fees were quite high, so I would recommend walking up from the old town instead — it’s a nice way to enjoy the scenery!
Cara J — Google review
We have just enjoyed a very pleasant and interesting visit to the fortress. The steady climb up from the river provided nice views. Although the fortress is undergoing major renovations until 2032, the museum in the former arsenal was worth a visit, especially for the exhibition on the peasants war for which this year is the 500th anniversary. Being a Sunday admission was only 1 euro each! During the renovations, tours of the main part of the fortress are by guide only, tickets from the visitor centre in the new courtyard. At this time of year (November until Spring) tours are in German only. However, as we were the only two people signed up for the 14:00 tour, the guide was able to do it in English. This was very informative and personal. Our thanks to the lovely guide for this. During the refurbishment, the cafe etc is closed, but there is a kiosk selling cols drinks and hot snacks, plus machines for hot drinks. Overall, well worth a visit!

A fortress wrapped in history — and home to some of the most unforgettable views in Würzburg. Even though Festung Marienberg was partially under renovation during our visit, the experience was absolutely worth the climb. In fact, the construction almost faded into the background the moment we started walking up the hillside paths surrounded by vineyards and those classic Würzburg panoramas. When we reached the top, everything was covered in thick fog — the kind that makes the whole place feel mysterious and ancient. The fortress walls, towers, and archways appeared like shadows in the mist, and honestly, it added such a cinematic touch. We thought we’d lost the view for the day… but then, a few minutes later, the fog slowly opened up. And that’s when the magic happened. The entire city revealed itself beneath us — the river, the old town rooftops, the bridges, and the rolling hills. It felt like watching a curtain lift on the most beautiful stage scene you can imagine. The contrast between the fog and the suddenly crystal-clear panorama was surreal. You could feel the whole crowd around us go silent for a moment, just taking it in. Even with renovations, the fortress remains a must-visit. The atmosphere, the history, the climb, and especially the views — everything comes together perfectly. If you’re in Würzburg, you simply can’t skip this place. And if you’re lucky enough to catch the fog lifting like we did, you’ll remember that moment for a long, long time.
Ronnie P — Google review
The path to fortress is incredible and the view from top along with Main river view reminded me of Prague and the bridge resembling some what to Charles bridge. The red roofs and architecturally decorated view was splendid. I would definitely go again.

The Würzburg Residence is a must-see attraction in the city, known for its opulent 18th-century palace and formal gardens. This UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases magnificent Baroque architecture and lush surroundings. The palace, built between 1719 and 1744 under the patronage of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, boasts intricate stuccoes, lavish furnishings, and an impressive fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
Gorgeous rococo. Twice a day English tours but the tour is not really necessary. The small von Wagner museum is worth a quick stop (it's free) and the church is small but pretty. There is a tourist town bus that stops outside the Residence during summer months. There are no online tickets sales or time slots.

The decorations were wonderful, and the optical illusions on the ceiling were so impressive that I could have mistaken them for real sculptors. I took a guided tour in English, and they explained every detail, which was very educational. Towards the end of the tour, there were photos of the building that were devastated during World War II, and I was impressed by how well it had been restored.

An absolute masterpiece — easily one of the most breathtaking palaces in all of Germany. The Würzburg Residence is the kind of place that stops you in your tracks the moment you walk in. Even if you’ve visited other European palaces, this one has a unique elegance — a perfect blend of Bavarian grandeur, Italian influence, and French sophistication. The scale, the symmetry, the attention to detail… everything feels world-class. The highlight is undeniably the grand staircase with Tiepolo’s famous ceiling fresco. It’s massive, vibrant, and so full of movement that you could stare at it for ages. The fact that it survived WWII feels almost miraculous. Every room that follows — from the mirrored hall to the intricate salons — feels like stepping deeper into a story where every wall, every frame, every piece of décor has something to say. The flow of the visit is smooth, the staff are friendly, and the signage makes it easy to understand the historical context without feeling overwhelmed. Photography restrictions apply in some areas, but honestly, that makes you focus on the craft and artistry even more. The gardens are another highlight. Perfectly manicured and incredibly serene, they create a stunning contrast with the palace’s ornate interior. If the weather is good, take your time — the angles for photos are endless. In spring and summer, it’s absolutely magical. Overall, the Würzburg Residence is a must-visit. It’s grand, inspiring, beautifully preserved, and one of the crown jewels of Franconian history. A true UNESCO treasure and an unforgettable experience.

The Würzburg Residence is an absolute marvel—both architecturally and atmospherically. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stuns with its grandeur even before you step inside. The perfectly symmetrical façade, elegant domes, and sweeping gardens immediately signal that you’ve arrived somewhere truly special. Inside, the lavish interiors are almost overwhelming in their beauty. The Baroque and Rococo details, particularly in the chapel and ceremonial rooms, are full of intricate marble, gold leaf, and awe-inspiring ceiling frescoes. You could stand there for hours just admiring the craftsmanship. But what truly sets this place apart is the Residence Garden. It’s a quiet sanctuary right in the heart of the city. The sculpted hedges, fountains, and graceful statues are all arranged with such harmony that walking through the paths feels like stepping into a painting. Whether you’re sitting in the shade of an old tree or admiring the palace from behind a leafy arch, there’s a calming elegance to every corner. This is not just a site for history or art lovers—it’s a peaceful escape where you can slow down, breathe, and enjoy beauty at your own pace.

We spent some time in the gardens of the Residenz which you can do at no cost. The place is neatly maintained and you can get stunning views of the huge baroque palace. There's also parking on the other side of the building as well as a free public toilet nearby.
Áron S — Google review
Worth a visit The building is beautiful and monumental. The main room is magnificent: the ceiling is painted, and the staircase is impressive

This is a beautiful place to visit. The opulence is almost overwhelming. It was a little warm inside but not unbearable. The gardens are INCREDIBLE. Highly recommend, very walkable.
Samantha T — Google review
This is a unesco world heritage site. Very well maintained especially given that it was damaged during the second world war. The key highlights are the glass room, ceiling art and the gardens. The total visit time would be 2-3 hrs. Do spend time in the gardens. The rooms can feel repetitive after a while with the same greek themed tapestries

Bridge
The Old Main Bridge, also known as Alte Mainbrucke in German, is a historic stone bridge in Wurzburg that dates back to the 16th century. Adorned with statues of saints and historical figures, it serves as a cultural and social hub for both locals and tourists. The bridge offers stunning views of the Marienberg Fortress and the Main River, making it a popular spot for people to gather, especially in the evenings.
Old Main Bridge – Simple, Peaceful, Timeless I didn’t cross the bridge, just saw it from the riverbank — and honestly, that was enough. The red stone arches, the quiet flow of the Main, and the reflections in the water made for such a peaceful moment. It’s not flashy, but it has this calm, old-world charm. Perfect spot for a slow walk, a photo, or just to sit and breathe for a bit.
Keerthy N — Google review
Excellent place to stand and people watch. The were having a fair so the town was overflowing with beautiful people. The promenade along the canal is perfect for a lovely stroll and a glass.
Raymond J — Google review
Great place for a pedestrian bridge. Watch the locks and dams move boats up and down the river and people from shore to shore. The statues and hanging baskets are a nice touch. The benches are an invitation to enjoy the views in all directions. This is a very historic structure. The bars and rearraunts at both ends are good also.
Dan H — Google review
This bridge is very popular for sipping wine with the Main river and Bineyard view. Even though it is nout that much architecturally decorated comapred to other bridge in Germany, the view is surreal.
N K — Google review
Würzburg is such a charming city, and this bridge is truly the heart of that charm. Grabbing a glass (or two) of wine and watching the sunset here is an experience you shouldn’t miss. The atmosphere is amazing — people chatting, laughing, enjoying the moment together. It’s lively but relaxed, full of warmth and good energy. Absolutely beautiful and priceless experience! Pro tip: buy some olives from a nearby store and take that hedonism to the max...
Luka G — Google review
One of the most iconic attractions in Wurtzburg, the bridge’s architectural style with massive statues tucked in niches resembles closely with Charles Bridge in Prague. Both are really gorgeous pedestrian bridges with splendid views from the bridge and of the bridge from shores. Similarity continues in number of tourists and locals crossing them. I have had opportunity to cross the bridge in the morning before local winery stand opens and in afternoon. Much more palatable in the morning. After wine stand opens, the bridge becomes really congested and hard to cross.
Mike Z — Google review
This is the main attraction of Würzburg. In the evenings, many locals and tourists gather. Everyone tastes the famous local wine. Beautiful views of the city, the fortress and the river. You don't want to leave this bridge!
Valeriy V — Google review
One of the most breathtaking spots in Würzburg — absolutely surreal views! The bridge next to the Rathaus is hands down one of the city’s highlights. Standing here gives you this postcard-perfect view of the old town on one side and the Marienberg Fortress towering above the vineyards on the other. When the sun hits the castle in the late afternoon, the whole scene looks unreal — like something out of a fantasy movie. It’s also a great spot for photos. You get wide angles of the Main River, the historic skyline, and that classic Würzburg charm all in one frame. Whether you’re shooting on an iPhone or a pro camera, this bridge basically does the work for you. There’s usually a lively atmosphere with people enjoying a drink and soaking in the view, but it never feels overwhelming. If you’re exploring Würzburg, this is the place you must stop — the kind of view you remember long after the trip.

Wurzburg Cathedral is a Romanesque Catholic cathedral known for its baroque stucco interior. Despite sustaining heavy damage in World War II, it still boasts mesmerizing art and architecture by renowned artists such as Tilman Riemenschneider and Balthasar Neumann. The cathedral, which began construction in the 11th century, is noted for its extraordinary length and serves as the burial place of the Prince-Bishops.
A beautiful romanesque/baroque cathedral of St. Kilian. The pipe organ is magnificent. Listen to a concert if one is available.

Some beautiful architecture at this free to enter cathedral after the over the top decor of the residence this was almost cathartic in its difference. The building was heavily damaged in the war but rebuilt superbly afterwards. Def worth a look

Everything in Wurzburg was badly damaged and burned after the allied bombings of 16 March 1945. This church was no exception and you can see this in the sober rebuilt interior with details incorporated from the old church
Seimen B — Google review
Beautiful cathedral with free admission blends Romanesque architecture with later Gothic and Baroque elements. Current cathedral’s core dates to 11th century construction. During WW2 only outer walls survived Allied’s air raids, and postwar restoration was finished by 1967.
Mike Z — Google review
Würzburg Cathedral (Dom St. Kilian) is an important church situated at the end of Domstraße that we very much enjoyed visiting during a recent stay in the city. The church is conveniently located near other interesting attractions and is well worth making time to visit while sightseeing in Würzburg Historically, it seems there have been church buildings upon these grounds since at least the mid 8th-century. However, the building you see today has gone through numerous rebuilds starting with the 11th century Romanesque church, Gothic additions and Baroque makeovers in later centuries. Heavily damaged during WWII air raids, St. Kilian was redesigned and rebuilt between the 1960s to early 2000s, providing the present church building that you see today. The Romanesque Revival style facade and its two front towers dominate the skyline as you approach along Domstraße. As you enter you find a nearly 100 metre long centre nave and two side aisles with an interesting mix of traditional, historic and contemporary sculptures, altars, ceiling frescos and stained glass windows. There are important tombs and epitaphs, a nice cloister and interesting things to view with the church. Allow 15-20 minutes minimum to walk through and see everything.

Nestled in the charming Ursulinergasse, Backöfele is a beloved establishment that has been serving up authentic Franconian cuisine for over 35 years. This quaint restaurant exudes rustic charm with its wooden furnishings and traditional decor, creating an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of old-world taverns. Guests can indulge in hearty dishes like suckling pig and marinated pot roast, all while enjoying the cozy ambiance that feels just like home.
Such a cool place to dine. Wonderfully cosy and packed full of charm and history. The food portions were large and the food was faultless. Super popular local restaurant so be prepared to wait a while without a booking. Well worth the wait!

Friendly service. Great wine recommendations. The pork shoulder is delicious. Hard to take a bite without going "mmmmm"

A few minutes out of the busy center, this is a place to enjoy the best this region has to offer. I had the excellent Sauerbraten, which took me back to my childhood with its discreet sweetness and the surprising presence of cinnamon. The double portioned wine glasses were exceptionally good as well.

I was visiting the city and wanted something more local. I showed up spontaneously for dinner and the place was busy, super cozy, looking very traditional and then I got a table immediately. The food I ordered was delicious (pork) but everything I saw around me looked amazing. Fantastic dinner. Just a tiny bit more expensive, but very much worth it 😋

We’re reserved at 21:30 , arrived at 21:30 and our table was not ready … the time we had a seat they asked us to order because the kitchen was closing. We ordered our food and they asked us to order even the desert . So we ordered even the desert thinking it will come after the food , instead they brought everything together .. it was rude , and the staff was rude too … we didn’t really understand if it was racism or just a bad day . Would say the first one because we saw the others were not treated the same.

Excellent restaurant with Franconian specialties. Cozy atmosphere with dark wood paneling. Popular with locals, its out-of-the-way location limits the number of tourists who might stumble upon it.

The schnitzel's flavor was perfect. The brats and kraut nailed it. The spargle soup was just what May ordered. The atmosphere was most excellent!

Absolutely loved our dinner at Backöfele! The atmosphere is warm and rustic — candle-lit tables, traditional wooden interiors, and a cozy Franconian charm. We had the veal schnitzel with potato salad and cranberry sauce — perfectly crispy and full of flavor. The service was attentive and friendly, and the overall experience felt genuinely local and unpretentious. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an authentic Franconian dinner in Würzburg.

Restaurant
Gasthaus Alte Mainmühle is a charming, rustic restaurant located at the right end of the Alte Mainbrücke in the building of the former 'Untere Mainmühle'. The atmosphere is described as indescribably wonderful and dense, especially romantic on the balconies in the evenings. It offers a wide range of Franconian cuisine with very refined variations.
This restaurant is in an old building on the Alte Mainbrücke bridge - the old medieval bridge that crosses the Main river and leads to the center of the city. For atmosphere, you can't beat it, and the food was great! The bridge is now just for pedestrians so the area can get pretty busy.

Dinner with THE view of Fortress Marienberg and the iconic Main Bridge, but also with incredibly slow and rather inattentive service. After being warmly welcomed (only table inside on a slower Sunday evening) and seated by a gentleman, our early arriving party was not offered drinks/served until the missing two joined way later: our waitress wasn’t busy, but just didn’t seem to care. Food was freshly prepared, well presented and tasty, but missing the wow factor given the hefty price tag. Appetizer portions are on the small side. Biggest reason for just four star was however the barebones service and often empty glasses. If your waitress rather chats with her colleagues than…

This establishment offers a blend of authentic Franconian cuisine, regional specialties, and international dishes. The restaurant's vaulted room with frescoes and leafy courtyard provide an inviting ambiance for both locals and travelers seeking a diverse culinary experience.
Visited this restaurant twice in two days. Lovely food. Good value, too. Friendly service from the very hardworking smiley lady. Sitting alfresco in what feels like the beating heart of Wurzberg. I'm definitely coming here again the next time we visit this lovely city

Came here for a private party (we were not the ones with the reservation, just guests, so I don't know how much everything costs). It was admittedly a large group, but the amount of time between meal courses was a little long, and by the time we were waiting for dessert to show up, all of the younger kids were getting super restless and we were ready to just leave. The food was decent, but nothing to write home about. It was also difficult to get the waiters attention. Not sure why the service was so slow, because the rest of the restaurant was completely empty. The room we were in had some pretty stained glass, but the acoustics were not great for how many people we had.

Came here for lunch on Tuesday. They have an extensive menu, I ordered the sauerbraten which I was very happy with- the roast pork was tender, plenty of sauce, blaukraut was juicy, and the potato balls were very yummy. Portion sizes are large, and the food came quickly. The atmosphere was also pleasant.

The interior of the place is amazing. The artist who made the paintings is unreal. The service was really good and the food was good. All in all a place to visit and eat in Würzburg. I will be back the next time!

We always come here for the non-veg options which are really great. But since I turned veg, it's a bit difficult to find options. We tried the gnocchi which were ok, but the pasta in pesto wasn't that great. It would be great if something more could be done there ;) Staff and ambience are nice as ever so still 4 stars!

It is a very nice place to eat dinner, very elegant. No dress code. The beer is crisp and delicious. The food is supper tasty and well present. I had the liver soup and I hate liver, but wow it was good and I had the entire soup, "yeah why not try it before i say i dont like it". I also had the special in bratwurst in the English menu. Can't remember the name. It is a very nice and quiet place. Definitely coming back to try more items in the menu.

Lovely food, excellent, efficient and friendly service. Pleasant atmosphere. We ordered local dishes, pork medallions in a mushroom sauce, with butterspätzel noodles and salad, then shared apple fritters with a cherry sauce, fruit and cream. The quality of the food was excellent for the price. The restaurant had a contemporary feel inside that compliments the historic building. We would definitely eat there again.

Restaurant
Bürgerspital-Weinstuben is an elegant inn offering handmade, seasonal, locally sourced specialties and a spacious terrace. It is located in Wurzburg, near some of the finest vineyards in Germany. The estate offers tours of its famous wine cellar, showcasing whites dating back to 1540. The restaurant serves top-notch regional cuisine with a menu available in both English and German.
The menu was pre-determined, but most of us were ready to eat anything at this point. They served salad and a very tasty hot pumpkin soup. (I would like to find that soup again!) The main dish was Pork Knuckle with Dumplings. It looked interesting and it contained very tender dark port meat. I’m not sure what the dumplings were made of but I think it was mostly potatoes. Dessert was an apple strudel. The star of the meal was the wine. I normally prefer red wine, but this white wine called Burgerspital Weingut Spitalschoppen was very tasty. We luckily sat with some of our group who also loved the wine and additional bottles were purchased and consumed. It was a great celebration start to our Christmas Markets adventure.

Great atmosphere, delicious food, generous portions and nice presentation. Servers were nice and able to communicate in English. English menu available. Service was a bit slow in the end, but the AC inside made the waiting worth it. Great location too, close to tourist attractions. It had an accessibility ramp for prams or wheelchairs. It had outside seating, but I didn't use it so I can't quite comment on it.

Nestled within the historic Court Rebstock, KUNO 1408 in Würzburg stands out as a premier gourmet destination, celebrated for its exceptional culinary offerings. This Michelin-starred restaurant, helmed by the talented chef Benedict Faust, showcases a delightful blend of seasonal and local ingredients crafted with innovative techniques while honoring traditional Franconian flavors. Guests are treated to an extraordinary dining experience that emphasizes quality and creativity.
Very friendly service. Some sauces overpowered the taste of the main dishes. Very salty. Food has gotten better this fall 2023. Salad dressing is more subtle and supports the flavor of the salad ingredients. However, when offering a steak dish, they should asks the guests how they would like their steak to be done. Still delicious in Fall 2024.

Whoever rated this fantastic gourmet restaurant badly, should not have come here in the first place. If you want to be part of something bigger than just a plain dish, get excited for something you might never forget. I’m a good eater myself and I never went home in need for more food. Been here to many occasions, even at New Year’s, it has been delightful every time. The service is extraordinary, every dish is explained - even in English - and the wine offered is a matter for itself I can’t get into now or it’ll take too long to read. We had the 5 course menu and it's a very interesting tasting experience. I have to admit some courses with not so common ingredients and the specific ways of preparation did not fit my taste but I take it as experimental for me. For every course, a card specifically introduces the dish is prepared. The service was very good. There was even a surprise desert and a small gift to bring home. Well it's expensive but worth it.
