Caserta

Caserta is a city in southern Italy. It's known for the baroque Royal Palace of Caserta, with its fountain-filled gardens. North, the Monumental Complex Belvedere San Leucio was built as a model town, with a silk factory and workers’ houses. East, the imposing Carolino Aqueduct is an 18th-century structure. West, in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, are the ruins of the Anfiteatro Campano, which once hosted gladiator fights.

Nestled in the heart of Italy, the Royal Palace of Caserta stands as a magnificent testament to Baroque architecture and opulence. This sprawling palace, surrounded by lush gardens adorned with stunning fountains, was commissioned by Charles III of Bourbon as a rival to Versailles. Since its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, visitors have been captivated by its nearly 1,200 rooms filled with exquisite furnishings and breathtaking frescoes.
Amazing and impressive place; staggering the scale of it and how long it took to build, but not at all surprising when you see it. An absolute must to visit, it is the only way it can be truly appreciated. Over 1,200 rooms and about 40 metres tall! The gardens are absolutely huge and equally impressive, I recommend the minibus if you don't have so much time because you can easily spend a whole day walking around the entire property, but you do then miss out on the length of the run to the garden, especially you like taking pictures. Given the number of rooms, there's clearly a lot to see inside. Both areas contain a huge amount of creative items to see, like statues (mostly in the gardens) and paintings and other fixtures.

I think it’s one of Italy’s hidden gems. Such a lovely place with marvelous architecture and a beautiful garden. However, I believe it deserves more care and attention—the garden could be even more stunning than it currently is. The entrance ticket to the palace was €12 as of September 2025, with the last entry at 6 PM. After 5 PM, the fee is reduced to €5. The garden has a separate entrance fee of €3 and remains open until 7:30 PM. I highly recommend visiting this palace. It’s truly worth it!
Shahnoosh R — Google review
I can't recommend it enough, it's astonishing. If I was to go back I'd visit the palace one day and the gardens another. I spent a whole day from 8:30 am to 4pm and I could have easily spent a few more hours just walking around soaking the beauty of the place, but I was tired and I had to get the bus back.

The Royal Palace of Caserta is a stunning 18th-century masterpiece, rivaling Versailles in scale and elegance. Designed by Luigi Vanvitelli for the Bourbon kings of Naples, it features lavish interiors, grand staircases, and expansive gardens with fountains and sculptures. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers a majestic glimpse into royal opulence and Italian artistry.
Marian G — Google review
A magnificent place that truly impresses with its scale and beauty! 🏛️ The palace resembles Versailles but with its own Italian charm — vast halls, marble staircases, frescoed ceilings, and beautifully preserved 18th-century furnishings. The park is especially breathtaking — an endless alley with fountains, cascades, and statues stretching for several kilometers. It’s best to allow at least 3–4 hours for a walk, and if you plan to reach the Grand Waterfall on foot, reserve the whole day. You can rent an electric cart or a bike, and if you’re visiting with a group, it’s convenient to take a small shuttle bus — just €5 per person. 🎟️ It’s best to buy tickets online to avoid queues. ☕ At the very end of the park, near the waterfall, there’s a cozy café where you can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine and relax after the walk. 📷 It’s also one of the most picturesque places in Campania for photography. Overall — an absolute must-visit if you’re in Naples or nearby. Historical grandeur, natural beauty, and a true sense of the past — all in one place. ⭐ Rating: 5/5

Grandiose structure (mostly empty) but the royal chambers (Piano nobile) are quite extensive and richly decorated and elegantly furnished. I enjoyed a 90 minute very informative guided tour in Italian (unfortunately with an excessive amount of Bourbon-era nostalgia... and no critical comment on the social costs of such bombastic projects and the sociopolitical effects of spatial distancing of royalty from the common folk in a guilded playground). I found this Reggia more elegant and pretty than the Quirinal and some other palaces in Italy (laden with austere or disproportionate displays of Baroque or mismatched styles or unfinished or unrestored works). Many similar palaces in Germany and Austria are however more elegant and aesthetically pleasing (they have also been restored to a supreme level of splendor and decadence by exceedingly generous government allocations in recent years). What recent administrations have done to restore the Reggia after decades of neglect is surely remarkable. The mixture of contemporary art with the original museum exhibits (after COVID) is not always very convincing: some combinations work fine but in other cases there is no real dialogue between works of art (the contemporary pieces - of differing quality and from a single collection linked to a recent natural disaster - seem put there very jarringly simply to respect the conditions of the donation, i.e. that they reach the widest public possible, and little concern for the dignity and harmony of the rooms' decor). Some works would work better in the empty exhibition spaces of the palace (even with baroque and neoclassical works included for comparison). But then you if you expand the exhibition spaces, you need to keep visitors there the whole day to visit the royal chambers and the rest of the museum. So you would need to attract families with children (with some technology exhibits, children's areas, etc.) and full day visitors (with a food court, performances in the gardens, picknic areas, horse riding...). I hope the site continues to develop into a mature and diversified tourist venue.

Not just a must see, an amazing experience! One of the most beautiful gardens i ve ever been in my life! You should definetely go there. You can skip the palace, its just another palace, but you should get to the garden! We ve made the one way on foot, and we came back with the bus. Its a reaaaaly long distance, so i would suggest you to rent a bicycle. it would be much more pleasant. If you get there at its opening time, you will have the garden for yourself!!!

The Royal Palace of Caserta is truly breathtaking. Built in the 18th century for the Bourbon kings and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli, it was meant to rival Versailles and you can really feel it. The rooms are grand and elegant, the monumental staircase is stunning, and the huge gardens with fountains and long water basins are spectacular. The history behind it, from its royal origins to its UNESCO recognition, makes the visit even more meaningful. Absolutely worth seeing if you’re in Campania!!!

The Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, constructed in 1762 by Luigi Vanvitelli, is a remarkable 38-km structure designed to supply water to the Palace of Caserta and its fountains. This majestic aqueduct features three orders of arches reaching a height of 60 meters and stretching over 500 meters in length. It includes notable canal bridges such as the Charles III Bridge in Moiano and the Valley Bridge in Durazzano.
Impressive aqueduct that blends into the landscape. Nice place to visit/spot when driving by. Parking can be tricky but there is a lay-by after the aqueduct if coming from Caserta direction.

Definitely worth visiting it's just so much bigger than I imagined. It is in very nice condition. You cant walk on the top due to a gate. But you can follow a nice trail up to the top and see it.

While exploring the greater Naples area (Italy), had to make a quick stop to see this magnificent part of history! We drove by it a few times to soak it all in and ended up parking where I found the blue P sign for free parking (tiny side street where couldn't go too far in bc only open to residents). Massive, breath taking and unbelievable that our ancestors could engineer and build something so impressive. Only stated 10 minutes but worth the stop.

When you visit the Royal Palace of Caserta don’t miss this wonderful aqueduct just 10 km away from the palace. Mostly underground, the aqueduct is well known for its well-preserved and absolutely amazing, three-tier, 529-metre-long tufa-arched section bridging the Valle di Maddaloni between Monte Longano and Monte Garzano. This section was modelled after Roman arched aqueducts, is 55.8 metres high at its highest point, crosses what is now highway SP335 — and was designated a World Heritage Site in 1997. The Aqueduct of Vanvitelli or Caroline Aqueduct is a 38 km aqueduct that supplied water to the Reggia di Caserta and the San Leucio complex from the foot of the Taburno massif and springs of the Fizzo Contrada, in the territory of Bucciano. Commissioned by Charles of Bourbon, the aqueduct was designed by and named after Luigi Vanvitelli. Construction began in March 1753 and it opened on 7 May 1762. It is located in SS265, 81020 Valle di Maddaloni CE, Italy.
Stefano P — Google review
Massive construction. The aquaduct is only a small part of the entire waterway that it is a part of. Located near to it is an old soldier memorial. Well worth a visit.
Andre S — Google review
This engineering beauty of simplicity is now an artistic welcome gesture that mesmerizes with the majestic presence to that of the Roman Colosseum. (construction started March 1753/completed May 1762, Province of Caserta, Italy). With its three tiers of arches, 19, 29 and 43 across respectively, I strongly consider this masterpiece one of todays modern work of triptych art, hence, intended to be appreciated together. In mythology, arches represents the door between time and space through which one passes to enter another world. The arch signifies the opening to new perspectives, the fact of seeing on the other side. The aqueduct was commissioned by Charles of Bourbon, and designed/named after Luigi Vanvitelli (12 May 1700 – 1 March 1773) who trained in Rome by architect  Nicola Salvi, whom worked on the construction of the Trevi Fountain. Highly endorse!

The English Garden, located in the top right corner of the park, is a 65-acre picturesque landscape that dates back to the 1780s. It was created at the behest of Maria Carolina, sister of Marie Antoinette, and is considered one of Europe's earliest examples of its style. The garden entrance lies just beside the fountain of Diana and Actaeon and covers an area of 25 hectares.
This garden is located within the Caserta Royal Palace. The garden is a lovely place for a stroll. It's very peaceful, calm and quite big. But to get to the garden it is quite a walk from the main castle. I would recommend taking the bus or golf cart if the weather, in particular if the weather is warm. Make sure to visit the Criptoportico. So beautiful and a must-see for nature-lovers!
Jelly T — Google review
Beautiful garden! It’s worth the walk to get there.
Héléna B — Google review
Lovely walk. A proper explorative walk of the gardens will take around 2 hrs. I thought there was some similarity between the Park Güell arches and those of the English garden of the Royal Palace of Caserta. There are also interesting links between nature and a "lost" world, with arcane atmospheres recurrent in modern TV series, e.g., Lost, etc., somewhat surprising, given that these gardens were done in 1786...
Stefano C — Google review
Nestled at the very end of the your trip through the palace park. Definitely worth the hard work of traversing the entirety of the park. Stunning grotto awaits and rewards your hard work of navigating through the English garden.

Beautiful garden. Be prepared for a long walk (1-2hours)
Bartosz K — Google review
Amazing. We took the golf cart tour. Well worth it. The guide was kinda cool telling us the history of the garden as well as the meaning of various statues I could have spent the entire day there

The fountain and the garden are very beautiful. The walk to the fountain seemed like a longer walk with kids so we took the bus the line wasn't very long for the bus. I very much enjoyed the gardens and how beautiful the scenery was.

The English garden is a must-see garden! Take the time out of your life to visit this wonderful 18th English garden with its parkland form packed full of amazing surprises. From the 18th beehive courtyard to the water lily pond and the "ancient" ruins, I was captivated by every step through this garden. I'm so pleased I took the time to visit it. For €9 per person, I think it's an absolute steal! Visiting tips 1. If you have the time and the energy, walk from the palace to the English garden. It is approximately 2km, slightly uphill, but you'll see some amazing waterfalls and sculpture along the way. 2. If you just want to see the English garden and don't have time to walk from the palace, the shuttle bus takes you there from the palace for just €2.50 each way. 3. Make sure you find the bath of Venus in the garden. It's truly stunning. 4. If you need a bite to eat or a drink in the hot sun, there is a bar restaurant outside the English garden near to the Diana fountain which is reasonably priced.

Pizza restaurant
Masanielli di Francesco Martucci is a renowned pizzeria in Caserta, Italy, recognized as the best in the world by 50 Top Pizza 2021. The restaurant offers a relaxed atmosphere and specializes in serving delicious pizzas. It has secured the top position on the list, with nine other Italian pizzerias making it to the top 50.
When you go to the world champion, what do you expect? Well, obviously the pizzas were cocked to perfection and the dough was outstanding…. However some toppings were questionable to my taste! Particularly the 3 temperature pizza (steamed, fried and baked) was a pity that I could not order it as a simple (but still the best) Margherita. I recommend Francesco to give such option in the menu to satisfy pizza’s connoisseurs 😉 Let me add one compliment: very accessible prices, congratulations. Many restaurants go nuts after winning international awards and recognitions: they kept their feet on the ground 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Visited 9 Aug 2025, lunch. Arrived 15 minutes early for my 1 pm reservation, and the place was full, but they got us seated within a few minutes. Ordered 3 types of their special pizza (the ones that are steamed, baked and fried)- the fourth type is anchovies, which we tried previously, before we realised we don't like anchovies. It's rare for a restaurant to be able to impress one just as much on the second visit, but the 7 onion pizza did the trick, amazing us again with its balance of flavours as well as how light and crispy it was, even in the base, despite having a visibly thick crust (pics shown of the cross section). We also ordered one normal pizza, and you can see in the photos how stretchy the crust is, although the base is harder to differentiate from its competitors (so if you prefer normal pizzas, you might be satisfied elsewhere). Servers are courteous and experienced. It's no surprise that this is still the number 1 pizzeria in the world- a place where you can be assured that you will consistently get what you came for. With the 7 onion special pizza, one almost has the feeling that, "I have to live until I return to eat it again."
Eve V — Google review
Pizza was amazing! The special 3 temperature one was just Wow! This is what is called pizza. Either you take the standard dough or the special 3 temperature one you will not be dissapointed. Deserts looked also amazing, but had no space for that 😃 will be back. Only improvement is for the timing when you book, you still need to wait cca 30min to get the table. Service was slow, but once you order you get your pizza fast. With little patiance you will get an amazing pizza, which is not hard to have in this area of Italy.
Tamara — Google review
I cannot tell if this is one of the best pizzerias all over the world. For sure the concept and some of the dishes of the menu, are unique! But overall, I think that I have tasted elsewhere pizzas with far better taste, than the ones we ordered here today. In any case, overall service and staff are very professional.
Panos A — Google review
Before coming here, I wondered, how good and different can a pizza really be, and is this place worth the visit? Well, it absolutely is! This was hands down the most fabulous pizza I’ve ever tasted. Each pizza we ordered had its own unique and fantastic flavor, all the way from the crust up to the ingredients. The desserts were also delicious and impressively good. We even had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Martucci himself, he was so kind and generous with his time. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance!
Arya K — Google review
Visited in April 2022 - Francesco Martucci named his pizzeria after Masaniello, Naples’ 17th-century rebel, and his approach is revolutionary too. At I Masanielli, dough is the engine: a 36-hour ferment yields crusts that are blistered, airy, and digestible, supporting toppings staged with precision. My choice, Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie, was Wonderland on a plate: fiordilatte, Tuscan black kale, salted anchovies, post-bake saffron mayo, crisp kale chips, and blueberries. Bitter, sweet, saline, and umami, it was playful yet exact - fantasy tethered to craft. In 2022 this was crowned the world’s best pizzeria, and the accolade tastes justified. 10/10.
Loo Y — Google review
Great experience, we love the Pizza a tre temperature. The reason for only 4 stars are the desserts which fell short (missing balance)
Yanick R — Google review
One of the most delicious pizza I've ever had in Italy,no wonder they won the title as Top 1 Pizzeria in the world. The pizza con cipolla cotta a 3 temperatura is one of the best! It can be really super busy and crowded in the evening, whichever day you want to visit this place. You’ll need also to reserve a seat or else you'll have to wait hours for you to get in without reservation.

Antica Hostaria Massa is a popular restaurant located in the heart of Caserta, offering a centuries-old space for Campanian cuisine. The elegant establishment, dating back to 1848, features a terrace and subterranean wine cellar. It is highly recommended by various travel guides and known for its revisited Campanian recipes and pizza menu. The interior is adorned with musical instruments on the walls, creating a charming atmosphere.
Antica Hostaria Massa delivered one of the best pasta dishes we've ever had. The service was exceptional—despite being short on time, the staff were incredibly kind and served us swiftly without compromising on quality. The restaurant’s interior is stunning, with a beautiful and welcoming atmosphere that left us thoroughly impressed. From the ambiance to the food, everything about this place exceeded our expectations. It’s a true gem for anyone seeking an authentic Italian dining experience. Thank you so much!!!

We went there without a reservation on a Sunday and got a table straight away - however we had to stay in the salon and not in the terrace (which is much nicer). Everyone was really nice, the food was good but not incredible
Raquel B — Google review
Well, this was a very pleasant surprise in Caserta. Amazing food and service. Pizza is excellent in this place. They also do an amazing eggplant parmesan called "Regina Parmigiana," while their fritto all'italiana (called "Fritturina Massa") is absolutely fresh. As to the desserts, we had the "Tartelletta alla banana con girella di lampone e fragole e mousse di arachidi", a sort of fresh tarte with a banana pannacotta layered on top of raspberry and strawberry coulis served with a little of peanut mousse, all of which was outstanding. They also serve good cocktails here. Service is also excellent.
Stefano C — Google review
This is a real gem! Strongly recommend to visit. Fish and traditional soup were the best. Risotto was delicious.

This place was recommended to us by our hotel. We could not have been happier. The food, service and atmosphere was something special that we will remember. We are fortunate to be able to eat at very nice places most of the time. This place stands out. High on our list! We had many courses and enjoyed every thing! Absolutely beautiful wine and the price was much less than we are used to paying where we are from. We will be back!
Chad C — Google review
Service was more than excellent, price is ok; however, the pizzas arrived cold.

Pizza Takeout
Sasà Martucci - Pizzeria I Masanielli is a pizzeria located between the Reggia di Caserta and the train station, offering classic and creative pizzas made with locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant has received several awards for its wine pairings and innovative approach to sustainability. It is known for its whitewashed interior and remains open for both lunch and dinner, allowing pizza enthusiasts to savor their new summer menu as well as timeless classic pizzas, including gluten-free options.
The pizza is excellent which goes without saying. The place has a local feel. Not many tourists will find it. The prices are inexpensive. Recommend the ORTOLANA and making a reservation. It would not be hard to see the royal palace and then walk here over the bridge that crosses the train tracks and Caserta train station.

Very yummy! We are on a mission to try out all the best (award winning) pizza places in and around Napoli & Sasà didn't disappoint! The best we had IMO was the Caprese pizza sandwich and the cacio e pepe Frittatina. Doesn't look like much from the pics but the Frittatina is bursting with flavor. We tried the special Frittatina but the cacio e pepe was superior by far in my opinion! Not the best Margherita I've had but pretty tasty, the cheese just seemed a little chewy for my liking. Overall really nice place with attentive staff and super quick service! We made a reservation and there was a line waiting when we left.
Melissa T — Google review
Pizza was truly exceptional. Innovative and balanced. Service was rushed. Wine pairings sounded good on the menu, but horribly executed at the table. Tree donation menu item truly had my partner excited and a great idea. Sadly, we had to ask for it and were unceremoniously handed an iPad as almost a bother. Truly great pizzas for each of the four in our party. Too bad the service let the pizza down.

Beautiful restaurant with a warm emerald green and creme toned natural cozy aura. The pizza was absolutely perfect. Great place to stop for some of the best classic Italian pizza. The marinara on the pizza was so fresh and the crust was soft and crispy. The whole experience was completely refreshing and fulfilling.

Atmosphere is nice and cosy. Lot of stuff for service (if you ask me almost to many). Staff is very professional, some very friendly some so-so. Pizzas are absolutey very good. They know what they are doing (with pizzas). Very good and tasty ingredients. Overall very good value for money.

This was the best pizza in my life. I had an explosive pepper and smoked provola combination for a topping. A bit away from tradition but perfect in taste. Traditional / classic pizzas also looked wonderful.

Waitstaff were incredibly accommodating considering my limited Italian. The Margherita Classico was exceptional - one of the best Neapolitan style pizzas I’ve ever had. They recommended an excellent white wine to pair with the pizza… if only I could recall its name. Next time I stay in Caserta, I’m making a stop here!
Colby L — Google review
got two pizzas with my boyfriend to share. half was completely tasteless, while the other, which was supposed to be a parmigiana, tasted of nothing but cheese. i wanted to try a kind of pizza that i wouldn’t normally find at a pizzeria, given how high the restaurant is rated. however, being vegetarian, the options were rather limited. i tried to order a pizza that’s normally served with ham without, and they literally refused to make any changes. can’t believe we drove 2 hours from rome and waited in line despite having a reservation for this kind of service and quality. avoid if you can. was not worth the trouble.

First, we were greeted at the door with an amuse bouche of salmon mousse with pistachio and a small glass of Prosecco. This was first class. Then we had several people attending to us all the time at the table. It felt like fine dining. The food was just okay. While the seared tuna salad and the smoked beef carpaccio were outstanding, the Caesar salad with bacon and chicken were not particularly good. The bruschetta and fried appetizer were okay, but nothing special. Considering the initial greeting, attentive staff, and the prices, I would have expected a lot more quality from the food.

“Chic setting, but the staff was unfriendly and unwelcoming. Overpriced – €15 for a 50 cl bottled beer, and not even a glass provided, I had to drink from the bottle. The pizza dough was rubbery, and we even had to pay €3 for parking. Overall, a very poor experience – truly disappointing.

Great lunch here. I am literally here when I wrote this. My wife and I tried the tasting menu, one is seafood and another is “land” - vegetable and beef! V delicious and not oily at all. Just a minor comment, the dish is a bit salty, and I know it’s authentic Italian saltiness! So drink more water or beer!

Pretty good. Nice Prosecco. Good glass of vino rosso. We ate there twice, once for lunch, and once for dinner. The pasta Pomodoro was OK and the fried anchovies were really good but the pizza well, pretty good was not nearly as good as at Antica Hostaria Massa a few blocks into town. In fact, everything there was much better, and we’ll worth an additional 10%. We had a 10% discount from Residenza La Reggia (which is a fabulous wonderful B&B). So I must recommend Antica Hostaria Massa as a better alternative.

We arrived right after the kitchen opened (BEWARE it says that the place is open till past midnight but the kitchen opens at 19.30) and we got a pretty quick service of both food and drinks. If you're looking for a delicious Italian meal in Caserta, look no further than Ristorante Trattoria Chichibio. This restaurant has amazing service, great food, and beautiful ambience. We had our thanksgiving dinner here. A fresh whole flounder and homemade pasta, plus other fixings. We ordered a couple side salads. They bring delicious bread and we were served complementary Prosecco, a small bruschetta, and limoncello at dessert. We ordered a wine pairing and espresso to follow. We wholeheartedly recommend this for a special meal or just a family drop in. Ask for the day’s fresh catch.

5 minutes walk from the Caserta Reggia and quiet. Beautiful spacialities of the sea and good meats and good desserts. An address like we like to find.

While visiting the city we found this trattoria: it is located at a small square, or crossroad. We sat outsite, had a good meal for a decent price.

Really good food and the price is also reasonable. The staff is nice too so overall very great experience. It’s in a good area so we would definitely come again.
