Burgos

Burgos, a provincial capital in Spain’s autonomous community of Castile and León, is marked by its intact medieval architecture. Its most recognizable landmark is the French Gothic Cathedral of St. Mary, whose 3 main doorways are flanked by ornamented bell towers. Inside is the Chapel of Condestable, decorated with figures of saints, and the tomb of El Cid (Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar), the 11th-century military commander.

The Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos is a fascinating paleontological museum showcasing remarkable human fossils discovered at the Atapuerca archaeological site. The museum features exhibitions on early human intelligence, Charles Darwin's work, and educational displays on the process of human evolution. Visitors can also take a shuttle bus from the museum to explore the Sierra de Atapuerca archaeological site, known for its caves, fossils, and stone tools.
I like the building, it's modern, bright, open, it feels good to take a scientific walk in a light and bright atmosphere, in a city such as old style like Burgos. It gives us a bit of hope. And Mei likes " the treasure map", it really helps the kids get through the visit without getting too bored. Thanks!

Simply spectacular. Most of the exhibits (apart from the very top floor) are bilingual (Spanish & English) whilst some of them are interactive. The original fossils are simply stunning. We highly recommend that you take the trip to the archeological site too & see some if the demonstrations. It was a first class day...

A very interesting and educational museum for all ages. One can learn a lot about the history of human civilization. Some exhibits are digital and interactive, which makes the experience even more engaging. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a must visit if you are in Burgos!

Incredible, elegant and creative display that synthesizes a ton of wild material. English translations of about 90% of the exhibits. Highlight is definitely the French-made models of hominids. Many of the items on display are replicas, but the replica quality is high.
Chris A — Google review
I think at least a full morning or afternoon is needed as there is so much incredible information and displays to take in.
Robert S — Google review
To find this incredible museum in a fairly small city was a revelation. The displays were informative and inspirational, you must visit Burgos to see this museum and all the other wonderful places within its vicinity!

Fascinating and highly informative museum, suitable for most ages from schoolchildren to adults. All exhibits are described in Spanish and English.

Well well well worth a visit if you’re passing through Burgos. Excellently laid out and incredible amounts of exhibitions displaying evolution of mankind with plenty of discoveries from nearby Atapuerca. €4 with credencial. Kudos to the museum!

Arco de Santa María is a medieval gate that was restored in the 16th century and features intricate carved figures. It has been repurposed for art exhibitions and cultural events. The gate is one of the twelve entrances to the city from the Middle Ages, showcasing its historical significance.
Very scenic place including river, walking area , park and cathedral. All together with Gate of Santa Maria makes thus place kind a magical. You need to see it yourself to appreciate the views and beauty of area. Don’t forget about Italian cream on the right side !

We traveled from USA. From Madrid airport we rented a car and drove to here. It’s spectacular and very impressive architecture, the Arch of Santa María is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Burgos. This is in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It is one of the twelve ancient access gates that the Burgos wall had in the Middle Ages. It connects the Santa María Bridge, over the Arlanzón River, with the Plaza del Rey San Fernando, where the cathedral is located.
Carolina J — Google review
What an entrance this Arch makes. I have seen many arches and this is one of the best. The historical detailing and completeness of this arch is impressive. Its location is just across a short walking bridge, where a lovely walking path runs parallel to the city wall. It leads right into the Cathedral square and makes for a fantastic lead up to the Cathedral. Also makes.for a great meeting place as it is hard to miss.
E L — Google review
Super nice, including the bridge behind it. Worth a visit.

Be ready to enter medieval Burgos through this amazing gate, very well preserved. You can even get in for free and admire the fantastic wooden ceilings, the views from the tower, or some temporary exposition inside the rooms.

Beautiful medieval gate linking the paseo del Espolón to the Catedral de Santa Maria de Burgos. Spend some time admiring the intricate carved stonework.

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Burgos Cathedral is a magnificent Gothic structure in Burgos, Spain, known for its rich history and stunning architecture. It played a significant role in introducing the Gothic style to the country during the Middle Ages. The cathedral features 38 altarpieces, numerous chapels, and intricate religious artwork. It also serves as the final resting place of El Cid, adding to its historical importance.
I echo everyone else 's comments - this is simply a beautiful cathedral that you must visit! Download the audio BEFORE you arrive at the Cathedral! We were able to have Mass in a side chapel. In addition, there are 21 side chapels, each more beautiful than the other. The architecture and the stonework and the various carvings are simply exquisite. It is hard to believe what stonemasons and woodcarvers built hundreds of years ago with simple tools. We did not take the tour- due to time constraints- enjoy the grandeur of this magnificent cathedral. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1221 and was completed in 1567. It is a comprehensive example. The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos is a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary located in the historical center of the Spanish city of Burgos. Its official name is the Holy Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica Church of St Mary of Burgos. It all began in the year 1080, when Alfonso VI, who was king of the ancient kingdom of Castile, ordered the construction of a Romanesque cathedral in the city of Burgos: the Church of Santa María de Burgos. In 1219, this church hosted a ceremony of great importance for the kingdom of Castile, the wedding of the then King Ferdinand III of Castile and the Germanic princess Beatrice of Swabia (daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Swabia Hohenstaufen).
Ann B — Google review
The Burgos Cathedral is located in the historical centre of the Spanish city of the same name. Construction on the Cathedral began in 1221 and was completed in 1567. It is a comprehensive example of the evolution of Gothic style, with the entire history of Gothic art exhibited in its superb architecture and unique collection of art, including paintings, choir stalls, reredos, tombs, and stained-glass windows. Burgos Cathedral has the distinction of being the only Cathedral in Spain to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site independently from the historic center of the city it is located in. The visit of the Cathedral lasts 1 hour approx. It is very large, with many small chapels. It is worth visiting slowly. Entry fee at time of writing / visiting : from 10 Euros Free Entry: Entry to the cathedral is free on Tuesday afternoons between 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm in the summer (and 4:30 pm to 6 pm in the winter). My way on Camino de Santiago Visited April 2025

One of the richest cathedrals I’ve ever seen! The intricate art and sculptures inside are simply amazing. There is a free audio guide that you can access via your phone. It is hard to listen though while also taking in the beauty of each chapel and artwork at the same time. 😅 This is a must-visit in Burgos!
Liza B — Google review
Espectacular cathedral with a fast and efficient check out service tickets. No matter your believes it’s a must visit. The details of all of the walls and structure is impressive. You would like to spend like at least an hour and a half to enjoy all the places inside.
Carolina J — Google review
This may be one of the most beautiful churches I have visited. St Peters in Rome may be grander but the Burgos Cathedral has so many beautiful chapels inside it, each distinct. Some of the chapels are humongous, bigger than small churches. Burgos Cathedral is awesome, a must see!
Gregory D — Google review
Huge building. We were to late to visit,as we arrived only in the evening. Impressive building and probably worth to visit also inside. Tickets can be purchased during the day at the entrance. The large squares around the Cathedral are pleasant for a drink or to stroll around with an ice cream.
Christy D — Google review
Burgos Cathedral is one of Spain’s most impressive Gothic landmarks and a true architectural marvel. From the moment you approach its elaborate façade and soaring spires, the grandeur is unmistakable. Inside, the cathedral is equally breathtaking, with richly decorated chapels, vaulted ceilings, and intricately carved choir stalls that reflect centuries of craftsmanship and devotion. A particular highlight is the tomb of El Cid and his wife, placed prominently beneath the central dome—an evocative tribute to one of Spain’s legendary historical figures. The Golden Staircase, the elaborate main altarpiece, and the stunning dome above the crossing all add to the cathedral’s majesty. The visit includes access to the Cathedral Museum, which is thoughtfully integrated into several side chapels and rooms. The collection spans medieval to Renaissance periods and includes religious paintings, fine metalwork, textiles, and illuminated manuscripts. Each exhibit is well presented and offers deeper insight into the religious and artistic history of the region. The cloister provides a peaceful contrast to the main cathedral space, and its sculpted tombs add to the sense of history. Overall, Burgos Cathedral is not only a place of worship but a living museum of Gothic art and Spanish heritage. A must-see for any visitor to the city.

The Cartuja de Miraflores in Burgos is a stunning Gothic palace-turned-monastery that dates back to the 1400s. Once a royal residence, it now stands as one of the most captivating monuments from the late European Gothic era. The monastery houses remarkable tombs of Isabel la Catolica's parents, crafted by Gil de Siloe, and features an ornate gold altarpiece brought from Christopher Columbus' second trip to the Americas.
The Cartuja de by Miraflores is a monastery in Burgos, Spain. The main altar was made between 1496 and 1499, and the detail is amazing! The architecture is breathtaking, and I highly recommend a visit to this very beautiful place.

La Fábrica Restaurante, led by chef Ricardo Temino, offers a unique and different gastronomic experience in Burgos. The modern and welcoming space focuses on creative and avant-garde cuisine, emphasizing seasonal products and flavor fusions.
Amazing Experience! We tried the tasting menu and it didn’t disappoint. Food is great we love every dish except for the lamb because I prefer lamb chops. Service was top notch. They know what they are doing and you don’t have to ask they are very attentive. My husband and I are very happy with the experience.
Adela J — Google review
The food was very good although not distinctive. I’m not sure I will remember the dishes in a few weeks. The setting was perfect. But, the service model is flawed. My waiter was spread too thin, didn’t take my desert order, and never checked back to see if I was satisfied with my meal or his recommendations. That said, the experience overall was nice. I would go again.

Fine food, creative cuisine, excellent combinations. Some of the dishes are really excellent, such as shrimp carpaccio, beef carpaccio, delicious risotto and high-quality steak. The other dishes we ate were less liked. Highly recommended are the last dishes, mango soup and cheesecake.

Tapas bar
La Boca del Lobo, which translates to "Mouth of the Wolf," is a trendy bar and restaurant in Burgos. The rustic decor features light wooden benches, brick walls, and potted plants. The menu offers a creative twist on traditional Castilian tapas, with options like Galician-style octopus, cod, meatballs, and vegetable tempura.
Amazing place for cold beer and interesting tapas! They are also dog friendly (they literally placed ice cubes in the dog water bowl!!). Totally recommend them 🥰

This place is perfect with lovely kind staff - “Patricia” is so kind and so patient , she tries to help you with her warm attitudes although she is always busy! The food is great and you can pair your fav drinks. The price is so reasonable respect to the quality. We loved this place and we spent a few hours with good food and drinks. Highly recommend
Karan A — Google review
Delicious but super overpriced for Northern Spain, especially for the portion size (about 14 euros for 3 tapas and a coke). Ultimately the portions worked out for me as a solo traveler, but I still recognized the prices were kinda outrageous. Still, it’s a nice, very chicly designed place, and the food itself is good. So go for the ambience or if you don’t have much of an appetite. But don’t come here to get the best bang for your buck. I tried the tempura cod, octopus tacos, and black spaghetti with aioli. The octopus was prob my fav, albeit a tad too saucey; the cod wasn’t very memorable.

Updated 2022. Had much of the same and it's still excellent flavor wise. The presentation of food has slightly gone down though. But not a deal breaker for me. All about flavor and good service. 2021 Review. Enjoyed the food very much. It's rich and flavorful. They have small dish so for a single traveler, I get to taste different food. Service was quick and friendly although it gets busy. Highly recommended! Had ox meatball, black spaghetti with alioli, pork cheeks in chimichurri sause, vegetable tempura, cod tempura, and torrijas for dessert.
Mic C — Google review
Really great spot for tapas at a very good price. We had enough to feed 3 hungry bellies, plus a bit of wine, for 45€! Most tapas were very good, while a few were just ok. Still overall very pleased and would go again! Try the fried cod, tacos del pollo and pulpo as well as the black spaghetti with aioli.

Nestled on the outskirts of Burgos, Asador San Lorenzo is a family-run gem that has been delighting diners for over two decades with its authentic Castilian cuisine. The restaurant boasts a sleek and modern dining space adorned with red accents and historical black-and-white photographs, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Best sit down meal we've had in 2 trips to Spain! Highly recommend for a special meal, or any time. Excellent service, fun comfortable environment. Entire staff very welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful with our limited Spanish. Surrounded by tables of happy local families. Recommend booking ahead, as they only serve lunch from 1:30pm It was very easy by the mobile WhatsApp number provided. They were very patient and responsive for booking. We ordered the 'Menu San Lorenzo' with the Cordero lechal asado, 42 euro pp. Includes 5 full size appetizers, a whole roasted leg of local DOP baby lamb, salad, water, bottle of Ribera or Rioja wine, bread, coffee and liquors. Simply cannot get a better meal and for the value! Best leg of lamb I ever had. Succulent, moist, tasty, cripy skin bits were like lamb chicharrones. The Revueltos con setas y gambas appetizer was unbelievable with the fresh crusty included. The aroma of mushrooms when it arrived at the table was so intense. I love morcilla and so should anyone who enjoys meatloaf! Delicious with the sweet roasted peppers. Homemade desserts were exactly what we hoped for, classic Spanish gooey, creamy cheesecake and eggy, toasted caramelly flan. Perfect lightly chilled local red. To finish they drop 2 bottles of digestivios on the table with a couple of frosty shot glasses so you can help yourself!

My husband and I had a delicious lunch@ Asador San Lorenzo today. We were greeted warmly by lovely staff. We went for one of their all inclusive meals, starters, wood roasted leg of lamb which was delicious and fell off the bone. The dinning room is modern, airy and has lots of atmosphere created by the many happy diners! We had a 5star experience from the moment we entered. We highly recommend this restaurant.

Very poor price-value ratio. Tasting menu is 36€, definitely not worth the price. Food is too salty, and small rations. Service is very slow. Had to ask for the check 4 times. I won’t eat there again.

My wife and I came upon this place on our way driving from La Rioja to Madrid as we were driving near Burgos. We arrived without reservations and were given a table nevertheless. The service was excellent and very professional and the food was amazing. I highly recommend the place.

Restaurants tend to be in hidden corners that you may pass by and not notice. ASL, is one of them! The decorations are quite basic, but the reception warm. You are also greeted at the door with large charcoal oven on the side, where meats are being cooked. Tables are already set with bread waiting. The food arrived not long after we sat down, local black pudding, with red peppers, followed with roasted lamb with a salad and last cheese cake from local cheeses. Coffee arrived to wash it all down, and as a surprise, two small carafes of herbal liquor to top off, and we were done. We were there for 2 hours nearly. We left satisfied as the service matched the food. Disfrutar.

Restaurante El Huerto de Roque is a vibrant and colorful establishment in Burgos, offering creative Spanish cuisine. Since 2012, this restaurant has been serving dishes based on seasonal produce and the chef's creativity. It features three distinct spaces: the restaurant, gastrobar, and private lounge, each providing a tailored gastronomic experience. Located near Castillo Park in a tranquil area of Burgos, the modern and welcoming decor adds to its appeal.
We enjoyed the lunch here. The first plate was small quantity but surprisingly good. The meats were both tasty. The pannacotta made from goat milk was a little bit strange for me, it was hard. Service was good and warm.

Booked for Saturday lunch while staying 2 nights in Burgos. Can’t say enough wonderful things about this farm to table style restaurant. The dishes were creative, the flavors amazing, and the service exceptional. While the host said he didn’t speak English he was very thoughtful in explaining the menu offerings. It’s three dish price fixe but with an amuse bouche and 2 starters it was more like 5 courses for 35 euro. Exceptional. Can’t recommend enough! Best meal of our entire trip! Gracias!

Absolutely amazing! The staff at this place went out of their way to explain all the food to us in English and help us make the right decision about our orders. We went on a very nice night during July 2021 and ordered 4 dishes. Food quality was simply amazing! We started with a cherries salmorejo, great sweet and salty combination to replace a traditional classic. We also ordered arancini. Crunchy, very well flavored (cheesy) but also fresh fue to the basil sauce. The entrecot was great, and the smoked flavor made it AMAZING! We highly recommend to order the chocolate dessert. Creamy and fresh.

Carmen Restaurante is a trendy, family-run establishment that has been passed down through generations. The menu features creative meat, seafood, and vegetable dishes along with delectable desserts and a selection of wines. The restaurant offers a three-course menu served daily, as well as more elaborate tasting menus for those seeking a gourmet experience. With its traditional Spanish cuisine presented with a modern twist, Carmen Restaurante is highly recommended for anyone visiting the area of Burgos.
The best restaurant in Burgos hands down! Carmen is a family owned restaurant: Oscar, the brother, is the amazing Chief, Monica, the sister, is the maitre d’ who coordinates the service with precision and efficiency while always smiling and last but not least, the lovely Alba, Oscar’s wife, organizes the restaurant and its PR. Carmen’s cuisine is traditional spanish with a modern twist. It’s beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. This is a must try if you are in the area! Try the cecina cocida, the grilled calamari or their amazing aged steak. Everything is delicious in the menu and they have information on allergies, which is helpful.

Very good experience even under covid19 circumstances. Everything was clean and very professional staff. Products are super fresh and high quality fish and meat. One of the best bravas in Burgos. High prices well deserved, worth for the amount. The menu is huge and full of options. Hope they will success in this city, they deserve it. Coffee is from Illy, very good temperature and texture.
