Specialty Museums
Located on the northern side of Mowbray Park, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is a diverse venue that houses exhibits on industrial and social history, geology, glass and pottery, art, and archaeology. The museum incorporates the striking Crystal Palace interpretation of the Winter Gardens filled with exotic plants. Following wartime damage, extensive rebuilding took place with lottery funds enabling many improvements in 2001.
We had such a wonderful day at the Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens! I was genuinely impressed by how much there was to see and do – and the best part is, it’s all free to enter! It’s a fantastic place for families. There are so many interactive activities for children, from hands-on exhibits to creative corners where they can draw, build, and explore. My kids were absolutely fascinated by the live aquarium – watching the fish up close was such a magical moment for them. The Winter Gardens were beautiful, like stepping into a tropical paradise. The variety of plants, the warmth, and the peaceful atmosphere made it a perfect break from the busy museum areas. It felt like a hidden gem right in the middle of the city. The museum itself was full of interesting displays about Sunderland’s history, art, and natural science – something for every age and interest. The staff were friendly and helpful, and everything was clean and well-maintained. Overall, it was a five-star experience for the whole family. We left with happy kids, great memories, and we’ll definitely be visiting again. Highly recommended!

Lovely museum. It was free to enter, which was great. There were quite a few missing exhibits while walking round, and really annoyingly, the penny machine was out of order. I've been collecting these from different places for years, so it's always disappointing if the machines are not working or just not plugged in. In the museum there's quite a few floors, and the winter gardens. The scenic lift wasn't working, which, although didn't affect me, probably disappointed others. The winter gardens were stunning and had dinosaurs hidden throughout. Great view over the park too. There's also a few art galleries which frequently change. The museum had lots of different parts to it and was interesting to visit. There's plenty of toilets throughout, a lift to the different floors, gift shop, library and cafe.
Donna W — Google review
The garden area is lovely but quite small. There is a very nice goldfish area and beautiful plant life. The museum was lacking in proper boards to explain the exhibits. A lot of it looked like it had been there a long time, but the museum was in good condition and well maintained. I felt a bit bored tbh. The ship collection was probably the best part, the quartz and other crystals were also very nice. As it is free i probably can't complain, but if they charged £5 for entry they could probably refresh some things and make it more interesting. There is no parking there.

Absolute gorgeous little gem we came across in Sunderland city centre. Decided to nip inside for the gift shop to get a few souvenirs, they have magnets, postcards, soft toys and more!! Was then told the museum was free and the gardens which are wonderful. We spent about an hour in here which took plenty of our free time up and it was a lovely experience from gardens to boats and trains to sunderlands history. 100% recommend to stop by had an amazing time!!

Spent a lovely couple of hours here with my husband and grown up sons. Loads of things to see. I now feel I understand Sunderlands and the local area a little better. Free entry was a bonus. Enjoyed the winter gardens, koi carp are lovely. Cafe staff really friendly and attentive. Would definitely recommend a visit if you find yourself with a spare hour or two in Sunderland.

Great museum with loads to look at. Very friendly and helpful staff, children absolutely loved it went during 6 weeks holidays and had free treasure hunt and activities on. Disabled parking outside and pushchair friendly inside. Dinosaur area is brilliant and the local area history is fab, was nice to see the children interested in history definitely recommend. (Children aged 1, 4 and 10)

Great museum to visit, its all free to see. The garden is gorgeous especially the koi's, the smell of the garden just make you feel at peace. There is seating area in the garden to relax in. The museum is random stuff about Sunderland. There is a coffee shop inside to take a break and you have the park to walk around in.

First visit here and wanted to see the gardens. They didn't disappoint. I could have listened to the water all day! Visited the cafe and the coal mining exhibit too. Will definitely be back.

The National Glass Centre, built in 1998 at a cost of approximately 17 million, is a stylish and modern facility that celebrates the history of glass making. It features five galleries with ever-changing exhibitions showcasing stunning glass sculptures. Visitors can witness live demonstrations of glass making and blowing in the dedicated studio and purchase the results at the onsite souvenir shop. Sunderland's rich glass-making heritage is highlighted through its global companies like Pyrex and Hartley Woods, making it an ideal location for this center.
Our first visit here and was pleasantly surprised at the glassware and other exhibitions to look at.Its free to visit and it had a good glass blowing demonstration worth seeing. The cafe was not busy so we ordered two cheese toasties and pots of tea. The tea arrived within minutes, but we waited 40 minutes for the food which we had to rush eating it to get to the glass demonstration. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
Carolyn B — Google review
We took an unplanned trip to the National glass Centre, which didn't go down well initially with my son... but actually we all came away enjoying it more than some of us thought we would! On arrival, we parked just outside in the main car park, parking cost was not overly expensive (£3 all day or you could pay hourly as well). Entrance to the Centre is also free, my daughter wanted to look at the animal exhibition so we headed straight there first. We had a good wonder round and watched the glass blowing and glass flame work session. The centre also has some little activities for kids to do, and you can borrow an activity backpack to keep them busy which is a great idea.
Andrew C — Google review
This was a fascinating venue to explore, delving into Sunderland's history as a glass-making hub! The procedures of how the glass was made is detailed along with exhibits of the old material, photographs give a glimpse of these pieces being worked on too. Staff even provided a demonstration of how to make the glass now using the tools and burning furnaces, different objects such as glass plates and bowls are displayed too!
K. P — Google review
Recommend to check it out if your around the area. The gallery is a bit small to me and the contemporary art place was shut for change of galleries during my visit. Clean toilets
Kin O — Google review
We stopped by for an unplanned trip on a rainy day. Lots has been added since I last visited in the early 2000s. The demonstrations were very good and the glass artists very informative
Anne-Marie P — Google review
Exceptionally friendly and welcoming staff. Both demonstration were fascinating both of which were kind enough to answer questions from my children. Cafe was good value with lovely views of the docks, highly recommend.

Fantastic venue, great exhibitions, friendly staff and all for free !

Some fabulous exhibitions with somone on hand to explain processes if you're interested. Lovely little shop with some fab stuff ( yes I did). Cafe great homemade food. Cakes, scones, leaf tea. Definitely worth a visit. Then you can walk along the riverside. Don't miss this before they VERY SADLY re-locate it in 2026.

The Sunderland Empire Theatre is a grand Edwardian theater that hosts a variety of shows including musicals, comedy, pantomime, music, and dance performances. It stands as an iconic cultural beacon in Sunderland with over a century of history and has seen famous names like Charlie Chaplin and The Beatles grace its stage. With a capacity of 2,200, it is considered one of the best theaters in the UK and has hosted major productions including musicals and operas.
Saw Hamilton here. The theatre was beautiful and all the staff really friendly and helpful. Ability to order drinks and snacks from your seat using QR code was a nice feature. The show was amazing as was the venue!

Really nice theatre, smaller than the ones I am used to going to. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Prices for drinks and snacks were high but this is as expected when visiting a theatre, you can order for drinks to come to your seat but we didn't bother on this occasion.
Vikki F — Google review
First visit. Beautiful exterior. All the staff from behind the bar to management were lovely, helpful and polite. Seats were comfortable (especially in comparison to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle). There's a good range drinks and snacks, with seat service available. Production was great. Inside also appears to be well maintained. A great evening.
BROON B — Google review
Very ornate old building. Toilets were fine. A queue as usual for the ladies as you'd expect anywhere there's a show. We had a whole row to ourselves so could spread our legs out but if we'd been limited to our seats, the legroom would have been a little uncomfortable for us. We were in the upper circle in the lower numbers. We had an ok view though many parts were on the right side of the stage, which we couldn't see because of the boxes, so thankfully, they videoed it and it was up on two large screens above the actors. Some people did move further back as their seats were on the front row of the upper circle which had a safety bar in front of them which obstructed their view.
R P — Google review
Just been to watch the friends musical and I adored it. The musical itself was amazing and I had no issues with the theatre at all. One thing that isn’t the greatest is the prices of food and drink but that’s a usual with things now so it didn’t bother us. The seats were amazing in the upper circle and it wasn’t even expensive to sit where we did. £15 each for our seats for that show. The staff were amazing as I lost my phone and they managed to phone my parents through my medical id on my phone and kept it until I found it. My program booklet got ruined from someone’s drink and the woman happily gave me a fresh one after I showed her and I was over the moon. The program was £4 but I wasn’t bothered. Highly recommend here as I haven’t been in years and wasn’t let down at all.
Lily W — Google review
What can I say. What a breath of Magic from Start to Finish. we were swept away into Berts Chalk pictures on a wild and breezy adventure. What a performance. First time we have been to the Empire theatre. We will most certainly be back.
Christopher M — Google review
It's a classic 'theatre' comfy seats, small and intimate. The interval 'sustenance' app is a great idea, and worked well for some folk around us. My techno-incompetence meant I couldn't load and master it, and because everyone else was using it, there was no queue for the (very expensive) ices. Also some folks interval snacks arrived 10 minutes into the second half. We to see Hamilton with our daughter and granddaughter's who know the show well. It was a great performance lots of energy and engagement. All in all a great night out. Another possible negative the bag check was perfunctory. The theatre emptied at the end of the show in under 10 minutes, and we were in the front of the stalls. Lengthy queue for the merchandise, but that's not why we went!
Conrad C — Google review
What a beautiful theatre with a very spooky history. An excellent place to see Inside No. 9 Live which was fantastic. Parking is very convenient at the local shopping centre although the lack of pay stations caused a massive hold-up before getting away. (Not the theatre's fault!).

Hylton Castle is a 14th-century medieval fortress located in Sunderland, surrounded by lush greenery and offering a glimpse into the city's rich history. The castle features a distinctive gatehouse-tower built by Sir William Hylton, displaying royal and family heraldry including Richard II's white hart badge.
Amazing. Did Saturday morning tour of castle with Colin - he shared a wealth of information. He was so enthusiastic it was a pleasure. The Castle restored to an incredible degree. If this us your 'thing' then you dont want to miss a visit. View from rooftop was amazing. Shame spiral steps were just too much for our 93yr old Mam. Hopefully English Heritage will agree to a lift right to the top. Cafe - coffee was delicious as were the homemade scones. EVERYONE was helpful and friendly. Made it a great visit. DON'T MISS IT. Didn't get to St Catherine's Chapel - so good reason for another visit. Cafe open even just to call in for a cuppa.

Free to enter, but need to pay to go on a tour. Lovely cafe and the best toilets. Picnic benches and kids games on the lawn in the summer. Free car park.

As a local, I’m delighted that the castle now has a purpose. The tours are really good, telling the history of the castle and the families. The grounds are great and there’s regular events on. The coffee shop is a welcome addition

Just been on a tour of the castle held by Colin and Dawn, absolutely fascinating! They were so knowledgeable and friendly and happy to help. The castle has been restored beautifully and was so interesting to learn about it! Will be back to try the famous afternoon Tea! Thank you for a great experience!

TL;DR: Hylton Castle in Sunderland is a beautifully restored historic site offering informative tours, a cozy tea room, and nearby cathedral ruins. Also available as an events venue! Hylton Castle is a fantastic historic site to visit in Sunderland. Dating back to the late 14th century, the castle was originally built as a fortified manor house and has since undergone restoration to serve as a cultural and community space. I pre-booked a tour on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and was thoroughly impressed by our guides, Colin and Dawn, who shared so much history and insight. The interior of the castle has been restored and repurposed for modern use, blending its medieval past with present-day functionality. On the first floor, there’s a charming tea room where you can relax after exploring. I also took a short walk up the hill to visit the ruins of a nearby cathedral, which added even more to the experience. The castle also serves as an events venue, so it’s worth keeping in mind for special occasions. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area!

Restaurant
Nestled conveniently next to the Sunderland Empire Theatre, Aperitif restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that beautifully marries traditional Italian cuisine with a modern twist. This vibrant eatery offers an array of classic dishes like pizza and pasta alongside smaller tapas-style plates, making it an ideal spot for theatre-goers looking to indulge before or after a show.
We went before the theatre and the service was quick. We were in and out within 1 hour. Service felt a bit rushed to begin with as we were asked multiple times if we were ready to order even though we had only been at the table a couple of mins. This is in the ideal place to grab some food before a show. Food was tasty. Portions were average (could have been better). We weren’t shown the specials board which other tables were given to view. The restaurant itself is quite small with tables packed inside (not much room to move around the tables). There is no room for waiting as it has a very small (1 person) entrance way. Staff were helpful and friendly.

We were visiting Sunderland for a work event, and opted to try Aperitif. Absolutely fantastic service with such a lovely atmosphere. The food was exquisite, from their Frutti de Mare pizza, and their sublime Pasta options. The entire wait staff and even the owner himself were so friendly and helped nurture a wonderful setting for such a nice evening out. Recommend this to anyone that is looking for a place to eat in Sunderland. Can’t wait to visit again on my return back to the north east. Thank you Aperitif for your high level of excellence. Keep raising the bar!

Had a beautiful meal with my friend that they let us go half and half pizza and the salmon pasta. The service was amazing and so friendly! The restaurant was so friendly and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious. So much we have booked again for the following week given we were a week early for Mary popins 😆

You couldn't fault this place. Absolutely amazing food with friendly staff all round. The best lobster I have had for a long time. Steak was cooked perfectly and lamb was beautiful too 😁. One of those places where you're dancing in your seat because the food it's so good 👍

The restaurant offers a variety of classic Turkish dishes such as moussaka and falafel, complemented by Turkish beer. Visitors praise the sharing platters and mixed grills. Great restaurant. Went after a matinee at the theatre so had the three courses for £20 deal. Great choice of dishes available, and everything we chose was excellent. We'll be there again next time we're in Sunderland - pretty we don't live closer!

Fantastic food and atmosphere staff are very friendly and if you’ve never been before or are unfamiliar with the type of cuisine they offer they’re happy to advise you on what you would like they are very flexible with the happy hour too as we turned up late for our reservation and still honoured our happy hour order which they absolutely did not have to do! We tried a multitude of different foods and shared they even offered us side plates to allow us to do that and every table gets a free order of fresh bread which I think is a very nice little touch. Food comes out and your eating experience doesn’t seem rushed at all staff are patient and friendly and food speaks for its self.

Excellent first time visiting this restaurant. The service and food was excellent. The menu is full of authentic food choices and the quality is obvious in the flavour. We found the efes draft in chilled tankards is an excellent touch. This restaurant has a few extra touches they add to improve the dining experience. We will be back!

Bistro
Borneo Bistro is a popular family-run restaurant in Sunderland, known for its diverse menu featuring English and Filipino breakfast options as well as a wide selection of international main dishes. The bistro has gained a reputation for its friendly staff and reasonable prices, attracting visitors from across the northeast and beyond. With offerings from Chinese, Thai, African, Malaysian cuisines and more, the restaurant provides an authentic taste of Asia with generous portion sizes. Customers can also expect daily specials and student-friendly pricing.
Brilliant cafe style buffet restaurant with extremely generous portions and wide variety of dishes. Lovely ladies running front of house. Not your typical Chinese buffet so don't expect seaweed and spring rolls This buffet focuses completely on the main - 4 options for sides (chips, chow Mein, egg fried rice, roast potatoes) and several curries/meat dishes. The dishes are from the Caribbean all the way to the Philippines. More like home cooking than fine dining but so enjoyable. Our fav dishes were the goat curry, lemon chicken, and chicken wings Recommended Small plate (1/2mains with side) £8.35 and all you can eat around £12

I have bought food from this oriental take away loads now. And wow. The food is beautiful. I would recommend pork in Hoison sauce and the lemon chicken. My favourite takeaway ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best place for the foodies . Variety of meat with different flavours.
Jonoforck M — Google review
You can't beat this place! The food is top quality, the beef is cooked to perfection, the chicken the same. The noodles and rice are quality. The sauces are tasty. But the absolute best thing is the size of portion. The box is absolutely stuffed full, bosting at the edge, you get more meat than you tackle, it's absolutely amazing. This keeps my work place coming back over and over again. And just to top it off the staff are lovely! 10 out of 10

Closed forever now, sadly missed. Malaysian beef was just divine, as was everything else I ate. And now its open again after a fire over a year ago. I've missed it so much. Especially the kalderata, the malaysian beef, the fried chicken and my fav the african beef. Welcome back Kevin and all the staff at the Borneo Bistro.

First time customer and ordered the jerk chicken rice and roasted potatoes..this was amazing the chicken was so tender and the jerk sauce had just the right amount of spices in it and was well worth the price. The staff were friendly and helpful and made you feel really welcome. The premises was homely and clean I'd definitely recommend this place

This is an incredibly tasty restaurant / takeaway. Kevin the owner is really friendly and chatty, he knows his regular customers well. Always happy to give advice on the tastes of the plentiful varied dishes they serve too. You can ring and order in advance if you want to. Some unique food that is some of the best you can get.

Seemed fairly slow even when not that busy I had at most 4 people in front of me and before midday. Options were great on paper but choice was sadly not there on the day. Fortunately I was given plenty of alternatives which were indeed quite similar. Sadly our choices of crispy chicken, Thai yellow curry and beef weren't quite rave worthy. Certainly not bad food by any stretch and it won't stop me trying other items in the near future. For the price the quality of food is about right for the buffet style. Staff were indeed friendly and regulars are clearly well taken care of. I feel eating in, when tables are available, would be the best way to try the food on offer. The only thing I really was not a fan of was the rice, most likely just personal preference.

With a wide range of Indian classics served with a creative twist, Spice Empire promises dishes expertly cooked to perfection. We decided to go and grab something to it at the last minute. We were sat straight way and asked for drinks. Food we ordered was delicious. The mixed meat Balti was excellent . The spicy chips are crispy and very tasty but should come with a warning as these were hot and possibly too spicy for my taste. Definitely, worth trying if you can handle the heat 🥵 🔥 . Overall excellent.

I had one of the worst dining experiences at this restaurant. The food was poorly prepared—overly spiced and nothing close to what I ordered. To make matters worse, the staff were rude, unprofessional, and completely lacking in basic courtesy. From the start, the menu was literally thrown onto the table without a word. Orders were mixed up, service was careless, and there was no sense of hospitality at all. Yes, the prices were on the cheaper side, but the experience was so bad that it doesn’t justify a return. Never going back, even by accident.

We went to Spice empire on Friday and wow what can I say! I literally can’t fault this place it’s by far the best Indian restaurant in the north east! The service from the staff is second to none and they are so friendly and welcoming. The service is always really fast so you’re not waiting around forever like some other restaurants I’ve been to! And now for the best part, the food is AMAZING, always tastes so fresh and packed full of flavour, the meat is so juicy and succulent it just melts in your mouth 😍 onion bhajis are the best I’ve ever had too! If you’re looking for an Indians with the best service and the best food and also very reasonably priced, Spice Empire is the only place to go!!

Restaurant
Asiana Fusion Restaurant is a glass-fronted dining spot that offers a diverse culinary journey through the flavors of Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and China. Located in the modern Echo 24 building along the River Wear, it has become a sought-after dining destination in Sunderland. The chic and contemporary dining room provides panoramic views of the river while guests indulge in appetizers like barbecued spare ribs and aromatic crispy lamb with pancakes.
We went here for an anniversary because my partner recommended it, she's been here before. We got the Asiana banquet for two. I was a little bit hesitant because a) I'm not a big fan of Chinese food and b) I thought we might have been paying too much. Boy was I wrong. The food was plentiful, I'm a big guy and I was in a food coma by the end of it but satisfyingly so. Right from the start the food was rich, delicious and the variety was surprising. Duck, beef, chicken, prawns... All cooked to perfection. Highly recommend the deep fried crispy chicken with salt and pepper chips. MVP was the curry sauce, absolutely superb. Service was excellent. Fast and the server was actually hilarious. Didn't overstay his welcome or make it awkward and kept the food coming pretty efficiently. 5/5 for service. Really nice folk. My only gripe and this is a small one is that the atmosphere could do with some better lighting. Maybe some table candles or lights. That's just me though. Overall a fantastic experience and we'll be back for sure.

Phenomenal. Haven't been in since they have revamped the place, and it'sbeautiful. Food is still to die for. Service is the perfect level of checking in without hassling. Would recommend to everyone.

Great food, staff very attentive and polite. Don't like that theyve introduced a set service charge though-hence the 3 stars.

Fantastic experience tonight in Asiana. Staff polite and attentive, place nipping clean. Good drinks range. Food out of this world. We had the Asiana Banquet, can highly recommend the fillet steak batam style and the deep-fried chicken with garlic and spicy salt.

Our favourite Asian cuisine restaurant in Sunderland. Always a delicious meal and the team are very friendly and accommodating. During lockdown we've ordered quite a few takeaways from here on the app and always delivered on time and food piping hot. We spent new years eve here with a large group of friends (think there were 17 of us in December 2019) and Ian and his team couldn't have done any better for us and meeting dietary requirements by slightly tweaking the menu for me. Looking forward to our next order 😍

Another amazing meal at asiana fusion. The team were attentive, polite and all smiles. The food, wow. The steak flambé is to die for. Great cocktails too. Our favourite restaurant by far.

Went as part of restaurant week, and no regrets at all. I would have loved pretty much any dish on the menu the choice was so good on the special menu for this event. All dishes were both quality and excellent value too. The only thing I would improve would be the beer choice but that's a minor grumble really. Plentiful staff on and they were extremely friendly and helpful. Look forward to another visit.
